Theresa never took much of an interest in politics or our president. Now she can give you an up to the minute report on President Trump’s actions of the day. I will not tell you what side of the political aisle she is on other than her source is CNN. I’m sure you can think of someone close to you that now follows what’s happening in Washington and beyond that never did before. To me, this is the most positive aspect of the Trump presidency. Whether you’re for him or against him, there’s never been more people watching and interested in American government. This is also where the importance of honest and ethical reporting become such a key factor for “We the People”. Hopefully, at the end of the day, President Trump’s energizing of American politics equates to the largest voting America ever — educated by the facts not fake news. It is up to us to sort through the wealth of information and decide what is most credible. The ugly of the whole situation is the division created in our great Nation. People love to hate President Donald Trump. In many ways, he has chosen to fuel this fire instead of diffusing it — back to that Twitter thing and personal attacks on folks. However, this also separated him from both parties and may be why he was elected in the first place. At the end of the day, President Trump will be judged on the job he does. Never has there been a more important time for action in American history. I honestly believe come election time in 2020 the cards

will fall as they should. That there will be a true judgment of President Trump’s first term. I trust the American people. As fellow Americans, we cannot allow politics to create animosity amongst each other — the media preys upon division. Thus also another reason President Trump’s reality TV viewership is at an alltime high. We need to respect and appreciate each individual’s point of view, even if we don’t agree. This is what makes our Nation so great, and why people are fighting to get in not out. In the love/hate world of the Trump presidency, the old adage of three things to avoid talking about at the dinner table has never rung so true. Believe me there used to be some spirited discussions when my Dad was alive at the Webb dinner table. There are always members in every family that are easily riled up. I apologize to my sister Morgan and brother Brian if I may have instigated them in any way. I got this honestly from my Father. Carol was always the voice of reason who would remind us of the old adage. Just a reminder of those three things: religion, politics, and money. God Bless America.

It’s Been a Week…

S

eriously y’all, it has been a week for sure. I have seen and read some things this week that would make your hair curl. Some was horrifying, and some was just downright weird. But that’s OK. We don’t let the hate and weirdness get us down. We gather ourselves, try to continue our lives with grace and dignity and then we binge eat. I don’t know about the rest of y’all, but I could really go for some food that is absolutely terrible for me, but I’m not going to care. And you know what? Since it’s been that kind of week, we are going to start with dessert. Peanut Butter Cookie Chocolate Dump Cake Ingredients: 1 pouch (1 lb 1.5 oz) Betty Crocker™ peanut butter cookie mix Vegetable oil, water and egg called for on cookie mix pouch 1 box (3.4 oz) Jell-O™ chocolate flavor instant pudding & pie filling mix 1 1/2 cups milk 1 box Betty Crocker™ Super Moist™ chocolate fudge cake mix Directions: Heat oven to 350°F. Spray bottom and sides of 13x9-inch pan with cooking spray. In medium bowl, stir cookie mix, oil, water and egg until soft dough forms. In large bowl, beat pudding mix and milk with

whisk 2 minutes. Stir in cake mix until combined. Spread cake batter evenly in pan. Top cake batter evenly with rounded tablespoons cookie dough. Steph Bake 40 to 45 minNordstrom utes or until toothpick inserted in center of cake comes out clean, covering cake with foil halfway through baking if cookies begin to turn dark brown on top. Serve warm or at room temperature. If you think for a second that I am not going to top this with Häagen-Dazs, chocolate peanut butter ice cream, you are sadly mistaken. At some point I am sure that I have mentioned that my appetite is very similar to that of a 12-year-old boy. So things like chilidogs are right up my alley. Make it into a dip-like snack and you had me at hello. Chili-Cheese Dog Crescent Ring Ingredients: 2 pouches (20 oz) Progresso™ chili 2 cans (8 oz) Pillsbury™ Refrigerated Crescent Dinner Rolls 5 hot dogs 1/2 cup cheddar cheese, grated Directions: Preheat oven to 375ºF. Pour 1 pouch of

chili into a colander and set inside sink to drain. While chili is draining, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Lay long end of crescent rolls out in a ring, overlapping them to form a base. Slice each hot dog into rings, without cutting all the way through to the bottom, to make them bendable. Lay hot dogs on base of crescent ring. Spoon drained chili over hot dogs. Sprinkle carefully with grated cheese. Fold ends of crescent dough up and over the filling. Tuck ends underneath ring. Bake for 15 minutes or until golden brown. While ring is baking, heat second package of chili according to package directions Pour chili into center of baked ring and sprinkle with more cheese, as desired. Serve immediately. If you need me, I’ll be stuffing myself and recovering from my week. Remember to be nice to each other out there!

Camp Cadet Marches On By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

L

aw enforcement in this country has been taking it on the chin lately as the result of some high visibility, controversial incidents that have been taking place in various parts of the country. In Lycoming County, law enforcement owns a good reputation and the respect of the citizens, this may be the result in part, of programs such as Camp Cadet, which this year is entering its 43rd year. According to Camp Cadet’s website, “Camp Cadet is six days of being introduced to all aspects of Law Enforcement and Emergency Services with an opportunity to get to know police officers and the counselors on a personal basis. The Cadets are also exposed to competitive and learning activities outside the classroom that include Water Safety, Tactics, Crimes Scene Investigations, Firearms Safety, Bicycle Safety and Self Defense. They also get to tour the Little League Museum. The camp also provides the atmosphere of a police academy. Emphasis is placed on self-discipline, in an effort to encourage some form of regimentation in the personal lives of the Cadets.” This program requires those attending to accept military-style discipline and to participate in events that include: Close order drill, marching, personal and barracks inspections.

Camp Cadet was originally held at Camp Susque, in northern Lycoming County, from 1976-1994. In 1995, Camp Cadet moved to the Little League Complex in South Williamsport. This move allowed them to run the girls’ and boys’ camps simultaneously and save on the ever-growing expenses of running two weeks of camp and staffing the camp. The Mission Statement for Camp Cadet states: “The Program is designed to bring a better understanding between the youth of Lycoming County and its Law Enforcement officials. The goal of Camp Cadet is to provide an enjoyable experience that will be remembered by all cadets who attend and to create that lasting impression that police officers are their friends. Now retired Pennsylvania State Police Trooper, Richard A. Reitz, brought Camp Cadet to Lycoming County in 1976. According to Reitz, the concept for Camp Cadet was brought to Pennsylvania in 1970 by Captain James Barger, commanding officer of Troop A at Butler, who then had Trooper Al Vish start the program in the Butler area. When Barger became State Police Commissioner in 1975, he encouraged Troop Commanders across the state to begin Camp Cadet programs in their respective areas. Trooper Reitz was tasked in August 1975 by his commanding officer, Captain David Martin, to get the program started here.

said. “Trooper Madey and I went to various community and service organizations, such as the Plankhorn Foundation, the Lycoming County Commissioners, Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #49 and Eck’s Trucking as well as other organizations to seek funds. That first year the cost to run the program was $7,000, now the cost is about $20,000. We graduated 100 boys and girls in that first year of the program here.” He said a major fiscal breakthrough for the program came when the Lycoming County Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, (now known as Lycoming County Brotherhood Alliance), stepped up in 1977 and took a major role in helping to finance the program. The program was restructured in 1979 and is currently operated through the combined efforts of all Law Enforcement agencies in Lycoming County. In 1986, Camp Cadet became a corporation, with the Board of Directors assuming the overall responsibility of the program’s operation. Reitz was asked what impact Camp Cadet has had on the youth that attend it. He believes that the program has helped give the average camper a better understanding of what a policeman or other members of law enforcement and public safety community goes through on a day to day basis. “They learn how to accept military discipline, for they know how to stand at at-

Reitz visited Trooper Vish at Butler to find out more about the program, and by August of 1976, the first Camp Cadet in Lycoming County was held at Camp Susque, near Trout Run. Reitz was asked how tough it was to get the program started locally and to garner the financial support needed for the program. He told Webb Weekly, “It was tough because Captain Martin did not allow me to stay overnight at Trooper Vish’s Camp to observe how counselors handled the various activities. The only thing I saw was about two hours of activities and how Trooper Vish and the counselors handled the discipline. But I did get a schedule of activities and set up our program the same as Trooper Vish’s.” He then described the process of getting counselors for the fledgling Camp program. He said he didn’t get much support or help from the higher administration at Troop F. They did, however, make Trooper John Madey, Community Relations Officer for the Troop and Trooper Edward Martin, a member of the patrol unit available to him. He also asked the late Larry Strausser, a professor of criminal justice at Lycoming College, and asked one of his neighbors, James Smith, to handle First Aid and administer the meds and asked Mrs. Ludwig, a nurse from the Trout Run area, to check on the campers at lunchtime, to see if there were any health problems. “Probably the hardest part was where were the finances for the new Camp Cadet program going to come from,” Reitz

tention when asked to,” Reitz said. “They learn how to make a bed with hospital corners. They learn how to march and keep their elbows off the table. Young people are looking for discipline if handed out properly, something that is missing in many homes today.” He remembers well one at-risk youth who attended Camp Cadet and how the youth’s life changed for the better because of Camp Cadet. “I can remember one boy who was having a hard time in life because his mother abused drugs and alcohol. His grandmother took him to her home. He attended Camp Cadet, played sports in high school and got good marks and then went to and graduated from West Point. He served his country in the Army, in the helicopter division. There have been many others who have told me, ‘Thank you for changing my life.’ Many of these have become local police, state troopers, FBI agents, fire and rescue personnel or teachers.” According to Reitz, the impact of being involved with Camp Cadet is that it provides him “humbleness and a sense of satisfaction.” He said there are now 26 Camp Cadet programs in the state and four are located in the Troop F area. “We are in our 43rd year, and I go each year to see how much the children enjoy being there,” Reitz said. We now get the children of parents who attended, as well

as grandchildren. We have a wonderful staff of about 30 that helps give the Cadets an enjoyable experience.” Because of Reitz’s tireless and dedicated efforts for Camp Cadet, a special award, bearing his name is given at each camp week, called the “Trooper Richard Reitz Award”. One of the individuals who has helped make the success of Camp Cadet possible has been retired Lycoming County Deputy Sheriff, Tim Nelson. He has served as Camp Director for more than 25 years. Nelson told of how he became involved with Camp Cadet. “In 1990 I was in the 2nd or 3rd year of teaching The DARE program in the Jersey Shore Elementary schools as a Deputy Sheriff, and I asked my Chief Deputy if I could also get involved with Camp Cadet Program, and I’ve been there ever since,” Nelson said. “In 2000, The Board of Directors asked me, and I took the place of the director Trooper Mike Knight.” Nelson described the changes in the program in the years since he became involved. “The obvious change was when we moved in 1995 from Camp Susque in Trout Run to the Little League Baseball complex in South Williamsport. This allowed us to run both the Boys’ and Girls’ camp in the same week instead of the two separate weeks at Camp Susque,” Nelson said. “The dorms in the Grove and Little

A MATTER OF SAFETY In societies less advanced than ours, it’s not uncommon to read stories in worldwide media involving individuals being buried alive after the local authorities have incorrectly deemed them to be dead. The possibility of a premature burial occurring today in this country is nearly impossible, because a medical determination of death and a death certificate are requirements for burial. However, centuries ago, when comatose and unconscious individuals were not so easily distinguishable from the dead, it was possible for U.S. citizens to be buried alive. Consequently, so-called “safety coffins” were developed, which had devices (a string attached from the hand of the buried person to an aboveground bell) that would enable prematurely buried individuals to convey their status to passersby. A funeral is a meaningful event that can help ease the pain of separation that naturally accompanies death. Honoring the life of your loved one means you value the relationship you shared. We look forward to helping you decide how to celebrate that bond and honor the unique person you’ve lost. To learn more about our services, please call Michael R. Lingg, Supervisor or any of our staff at KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME at 570-323-7717. We invite you to tour our home at 1914 Memorial Avenue, where we have been faithfully serving our community since 1879.

Award Outstanding Campers) come back to help as Junior Counselors. And there are those that end up coming back as Senior Counselors that have either gotten into the Law Enforcement, Emergency Services field or something related to working with children. My experience in whether or not we’ve had an impact on the Cadets is down the road a bit. Our staff and I have had Cadets come up to us and tell us how much fun they had at Camp and what they learned from it. We also have had parents tell us what a difference the Camp made in their child and that they say they like what our program is about and does”. Camp Cadet is being held this week at the Little League International complex.

o our fathers, the “breadwinners, celebrated their big day on June 17. Another precursor that summer officially arrives on the 21st. Yippee! Spent this one a tad different, with a new acquaintance this time. I’ll tell you about that in a little bit. First things first. Let me thank my father Gerry Sr., for the tolerance and support over so many years. He, like many others, sacrificed time and energy to put a roof over our heads and food (prepared by mom) on the table. For many years he commuted to work in Scranton, Pa., and we saw him only three days per week. The lonely trek home on route 118 during winter was sometimes a “white knuckle express, if not a “deer dodging event. Thanks, Dad, for all the great stuff since 1962. Keep hanging around long enough to take care of that cat and see me pursue a few more things in life! There are some others I wanted to mention. There were also fathers, at one time or another, who made my life better or stronger by taking time away from themselves and giving to me! I went to school with John Doyle Jr., and his dad, like mine, was the “senior. Mr. Doyle was a manager at the local Goodyear store and had a wonderful wife and daughter Patti. This leader of the household also had a passion for old cars, particularly Packards. He was impressed with my knowledge of these fine cars, and he had one (1948 vin-

tage, I think) that was in the process of restoration. He is responsible for taking me to my first automotive swap meet, the granddaddy of them all, the AACA Hershey fall meet. That set the proverbial wheels in motion as I’ve attended over (gasp) 350 swap events since then! Thank you, Mr. Doyle, for inviting your son and me that October day! And the Gerry great breakfast on the way down at Ayers the Buffalo Diner — now a Liberty gas station and Burger King on Route 15. Thomas Saar was a coworker with me at the Fairfield Auto Group. He’s a valued member of St. Ann’s church, and to me, a “cheerleader. You see, Mr. Saar is also a cancer survivor and throws support and spirit my way like an overinflated beach ball! Tom can speak first hand about how cancer can affect a family; he lost his dear wife to the disease. He’s a strong man (if not a tall one), a Navy war veteran, and a person who believes God has a plan for us all. Thank you, Tom, for always thinking and praying for me! Two neighbors, Mr. Watson and Mr. Nick put up with me like ‘Dennis the Menace’. My assorted sports balls would roll into their yard or occasionally crush a new shrub. I’d scorch them while they were trying to change the oil and filter on their cars. I pestered their wives for brownies. The list can go on and on. So, thanks guys for tolerating

me and giving me all your car magazines! And the toys at Christmas! Now, onto the “new” father I met. While at health treatments, George Snyder was there to take his wife, Rose. Ironic, that we both live on streets of our own last name as I found out! One Tuesday morning he saw me perusing some old car publications and introduced himself. The conversation quickly turned to our first new cars we bought. George flattened me, “I bought a new 1954 Chevy Corvette in March 1955,” he told me. “Blue and beautiful.” He pulled out a wallet photo of himself in the classic sports icon. My jaw dropped. “I want that car back,” he explained. “After I started a family, I needed more room, so I traded it in on a Chevy Nomad.” He wanted advice on how to locate his old car! It’s not a mission impossible, I told him. With the Internet and private sleuths, many people can plug in the car’s vital information such as VIN, selling dealership, names of past buyers and towns the car was last seen in or around. Many people have found “lost loves.” Sometimes in better shape, and many times — in worse. George told me he is a retired school teacher and principal of over 30 years. He is soft-spoken and humble and supports his wife at treatment to no end. “When I taught school, we didn’t worry about children toting guns or dealing drugs,” he told me. “It was a simpler, better time in America.” When George caught wind of my car collection, he asked if one day he could see it.

So Father’s Day 2018 was going to be the day! His wife had a concert at New Buffalo Park, outside Newport, Pa. till 4:00 pm. After that, it was to my place and then for an ice cream run! George and his wife don’t receive the Webb Weekly where they live (yet), but they read it each week online. George and Rose have two sons. I feel good each week I get to meet him, as he likes my willpower, stamina and work ethic. He’s easy to talk to even though we are generations apart. The picture of George and his prized Corvette now occupy a spot in my General Motors room, and he was very honored. It was nice to spend time with another dad who gave up his day at home to come to my home. One last thing. Mr. Snyder is 83 in the numbers category but looks and acts less than 70. Maybe it was being around all those kids for so many years. Or perhaps his wife’s excellent food preparation. But I’ve got a hunch that sporty blue Corvette with the blue flame six motor and bucket seats was a true fountain of youth for him, and that’s why he wants it back in his driveway. I gave George some sobering, but factual, news, “I am betting you paid no more than $4000 for that car in 1955,” I said. “Now, it’s going to take a chunk of your pension. Like in the neighborhood of $70,000 or more.” George didn’t blink an eye as he knows what they are worth these days. Wish us luck in the search for his first new car! And a belated Happy Fathers Day to all in our area!

“Where Beautiful Rooms Begin!”

T

his article will conclude our threepart series on addressing the current crisis in school shootings and how Lycoming County is doing everything possible to prevent it from happening here. The first two installments featured the Juvenile Probation Department with Brian Pick and an example of school support with the East Lycoming Area High School and their principal Ronald Lorson. In this last feature, we want to highlight the work of the West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission. West Branch (for short) supplies an abundance of services to the area community, with two specifically designed for the schools. The first is the Student Assistance Program or SAP. They assist school personnel in identifying issues including alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs, as well as mental health issues, which pose a barrier to students’ success. The services offered by West Branch are assessment, consultation, referral, and/or small group education for SAP youth. The person who serves West Branch in this critical field is Cheryl Plankenhorn. Cheryl meets with the SAP team in each school, which is made up of the nurse, guidance counselor, teachers, administrators, and selected others. They review cases of students who exhibit some change in behavior. It may be more aggression, a lack

of interest in areas where the student was previously active, or a drop in grades. The team will review the case, see if it meets their criteria for study, and if so, data would then be collected from those who know the student to see what could be a reason for the present struggles in school. Once the source is generally identified, and the team agrees that an intervention is required, then parental permission must be sought and given before any action can be taken with the student. Unfortunately, there are cases where the parents do not want the issue pursued. But when permission is given, and drugs or alcohol is suspected, Cheryl Plankenhorn would take the case. Cheryl attends two SAP meetings a month for each school in the area and will meet anywhere from five to fifteen students a month to do an assessment. As a mother

herself, and decades of professional experience, Cheryl is the vehicle not just to identify a problem before it becomes a major problem, but also help these kids get on the right path for a productive future. As Cheryl works one-on-one, West Branch also offers the Too Good for Drugs Program (TGFD) to county schools. TGFD is a national program developed by the Mendez Foundation that is currently used by over 3,500 school districts throughout the United States. It provides developmentally appropriate curricula for each grade level through 8th grade, with a separate high school curriculum for students in grades 9 through 12. TGFD focuses on developing

personal and interpersonal skills to resist peer pressures, goal setting, decision making, bonding with others, having respect for self and others, managing emotions, effective communication, and social interactions. The program also provides information about the negative consequences of drug use and the benefits of a nonviolent, drug-free lifestyle. Programs such as these go to the heart of the troubles that arise in today’s schools. While metal detectors and resource officers are useful and necessary, identifying a potential danger and then seeking to help the struggling student will have a greater impact for change in the long term.

T

hat city police are cooperating in efforts to eliminate double parking in the business district street is shown in the reports that at least eight motorists have been fined recently for parking in the regular parking lanes.

One section that remains a sore spot in the campaign is West Third Street between Government and West Streets, where large trucks double park on both sides of the street. Truckers too are being warned that they must cut short their stops and that they do not have the privilege of stopping in traffic to do errands. A large truck parked in the west bound lane on West Fourth Street, just east of Hepburn Street, caused considerable delay around 3:45 p.m. and a motorist was discourteous on William Street, just south of Fourth Street, about the same time, leaving his car in the traffic lane, forcing other drivers to wait until approaching traffic was cleared.

men to adequately cover all the streets in the business district has made it impossible to put a tight clamp on the practice. Under a new plan being set in motion, the patrolmen instead of remaining at a special corner, will walk through the district in effort to halt violations on some of the side streets or in some of the sections just out of the immediate business area. Complete elimination of double-parking, however, will require the complete cooperation of motorists, police point out. The driver must be willing to walk a half a block instead of taking the lazy method of double parking, thus causing unnecessary delay in traffic.

Troop 12 to Hold 100th Anniversary Picnic

T

roop 12, BSA, of St. Luke Lutheran Evangelical Church in Williamsport, will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of its founding at a special reunion and picnic on July 14th at the Eagles Mere Auto and Air Museum located at Merritt Airport between Eagles Mere and Laporte on PA 42. Everyone ever associated with the troop is invited to attend, visit the world-class museums, recognize the troop’s leaders, and share reminiscences and stories with old friends of the wonderful, fun and formative experiences of the scouts over those many years. The event will be hosted by Mark Stitzer, a former Troop 12 Eagle Scout. Information and reservation form is available on the St. Luke Spectrum newsletter, which can be downloaded at http://stlukeweb.com/ spectrumcurrent.pdf, on the Troop 12 Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/BsaTroop12StLuke/, or by calling the current Scoutmaster, Bill Piotrowski at (570) 321-6600. The St. Luke Lutheran congregation has continually sponsored Troop 12 since its first charter in July 1918, which

predated the organization of the local Scout councils. Pastor Harry W. Miller, J. P. Harley, George W. Stabler, and F. P. Fawcett were among the founding troop committee members, with Harry W. Compton as the first Scoutmaster. The first registered scouts included Carl H. Simon who later became President of the West Branch Council and a noted industrialist and civic leader in Williamsport. Over the years, the troop has produced 69 Eagle Scouts and served as a formative leadership and outdoor experience for well over a thousand young men. Of the many Eagle Scout and community service projects completed by the troop’s scouts, some notable ones have been the construction of many of the local sections of the Mid State and Tiadaghton Trails in the Tiadaghton State Forest, a suspension footbridge over Kettle Creek on the Loyalsock Trail, the Rider Park pavilion, a pergola structure in Ways Garden, stream stabilization gabions below Heller Dam on Hagermans Run, interpretive nature trail markers for the Wa-

High adventure trips have been the troop’s specialty, especially in the 1970s through 1990s, which included winter overnight backpacking trips in the local state forests and Adirondacks in New York State, canoeing trips on Pine Creek, rock climbing and rappelling on the Loyalsock Trail, climbing in the White Mountains of New Hampshire

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

How to Break in New Shoes

I

love getting new shoes, don’t you? There’s just something about putting my best foot forward in a brand-new pair of shoes that gives me a bit of a rush. Of course, I love shoes whether it’s new strappy stilettoes for an event, or shiny new slip-ons for spring. What I don’t love is the discomfort, blisters, and an unwarranted stiffness that goes along with new heels, flats, and sandals. There’s lots of advice out there on the best way to break in new

shoes, especially high heels, but what is the most effective method? After some research and trial runs, I’ve found a few basic hacks and at-home remedies to break in your newly acquired pumps, sneakers, and boots! First, stretch them out. Sure, there are fancy contraptions out there to stretch your shoes, but the best way to have your shoes fit your foot, is by wearing them over three days. I’m not suggesting wearing them from dawn-to-dusk, that’s definitely the

wrong way to break in shoes. Instead, have them on for 30 minutes around the house on the first day. Second day, increase your time to 60 minutes, and try to wear them both in and outside of the house. On Bernadette the third day, wear Ulsamer them for two hours. By then, your shoes should be fully broken in and properly aligned to your foot. Of course, feet do swell as the day progresses. So, if you can, sched-

ule your three-day break-in wears toward the end of the day. Wearing your new shoes in the afternoon or evening will allow them to stretch to your most realized foot size. If your new leather shoes are still a bit tight along the toes after those three days, use a blow dryer, as the heat will make the material more malleable. Give them a good blow-drying along the toe cap for approximately 30 seconds before putting them on. This will literally “warm them up” for your foot. You may need to repeat this hack a few more times for really stiff pumps and loafers. Regardless of your shoe material, be

bay and prevent any possible fungus from starting. Again, you can use this method on shoes you’ve already broken-in but wear without socks, especially during the warmer months. It goes without saying the best way to prevent wrecking your feet with new shoes is by getting the right size and width. Feet can change over time and different brands have different fits. So, try on a few full and half-sizes, and consider sizing “up” if that provides you with more comfort. The right fitting shoe makes the breaking-in process easier and more effective. By learning more about succulents, people may become devotees of these unique plants. The word “succulent” brings to mind juicy, savory foods. But succulents aren’t meant to be consumed. In fact, they get their mouth-watering name from their uncanny ability to store water in fleshy stems or leaves. That means they do not require frequent watering like other plants might. Succulents also may prove

more durable in the face of drought and are a handy plant for forgetful gardeners or those who travel often and want something more hands-off in their gardens. According to the succulents resource Succulents and Sunshine, most succulents prefer warm temperatures and are not very cold-tolerant. However, there are some varieties that can survive freezing temperatures. Still, for most succulents, it’s best if they are kept in warm, moderately sunny conditions. The DIY Network says succulents grow best in bright light, but not always in full, hot sun. Succulents also may attract garden-

ers thanks to their diverse looks. Better Homes & Gardens says that color variations of succulents are quite varied and include green, yellow, burgundy, white, blue-green, pink, red, and variegated combinations. Their shapes can be just as diverse, with many having pointy, rounded, spiky, or ruffled leaves. People may be particularly familiar with one type of succulent: cacti. These traditional desert-dwellers are prized for their water-retention abilities, but some seem downright scary with their prickly exteriors. The Roving Sportsman… Summer Habitat Projects By Jon Pries

T

hursday, June 21, 2018, is the official first day of summer. For the next several months of warmer days and periodic thunderstorms and rain showers, we have the perfect time to step up our efforts to better the habitat to help all forms of wildlife. From field to forest, the work we do can provide more food, and cover for both game and nongame birds and mammals. So, from least expensive and minimally time-consuming to more expensive and more entailed, let’s look at some ideas. If you are fortunate enough to have a few old apple trees on your property, all you need is a chainsaw, or a sharp pruning saw to make things better. It is not difficult to improve the production of some of these old trees. By merely cutting out any damaged or dead growth, and pruning any suckers (those straight up in the air branches that produce nothing, yet sap strength from the productive limbs), you will end up with a healthier and more productive tree. Any additional trees or shrubs that grow within the circle of the edge of the tree’s branches can be removed with the chainsaw, and will no longer take away some of the soil’s nutrients that can be used by the apple tree. Deer, bear, turkeys, and grouse will all benefit from a more productive apple tree. To encourage

THE

growth in a young tree, you can add a cupful or two of 10-10-10 fertilizer under the drip edge of its branches. For quite a few years, Pennsylvania state agencies promoted several plants as beneficial for cover or food for wildlife. These included autumn olive, barberry, and multiflora rose. All three of these are now considered invasive non-native plants and are recommended for removal wherever possible. A mixture of glyphosate (Roundup) and water that is sprayed on their leaves will kill any of these three. If you encounter larger plants of these species, you can also eliminate them by cutting them off at ground level and applying a drop or two of Garlon 4 (this is an expensive herbicide, but can be more cost-effective by mixing it 1:1 with diesel fuel, which acts as a sticking agent) to the stump. All three of these invasive plants are usually found in fallow fields or along field edges. Once they are removed, native and more beneficial plants, such as hard and soft mast bearing trees and shrubs, can be planted to aid wildlife. Remove the invasive plants during the summer months when they are more identifiable and then plant the more desired ones in the fall or next spring. Both bittersweet and wild grapes are vines that can be added to field edges by planting near the base of a host tree. Initially, they will need to be fenced to prevent over-browsing by deer, but once they LOCALLY OWNED & OPERATED

growth — which is beneficial to wildlife. Whatever profit is realized can be used to offset the cost of creating the forest openings and developing and maintaining food plots. No matter what time of year you devote to developing food plots, there are always some grasses, legumes or grains that can be planted to create feed for the game and aid in bettering the soil for future planting. Whether your prime interest is hunting, photography, or enjoying passing the time observing wildlife, the addition of native food-producing plants and the creation, and upgrading of food plots will significantly increase the opportunities to encounter all forms of wildlife on your property.

are established will produce fruit that is used by turkeys, grouse, and numerous songbirds. The creation of forest openings or food plots will take more time, and can be costly, yet will provide additional varied habitat for game. To offset the cost, you might consider a TSI (timber stand improvement), which in itself will be beneficial not just to the wildlife, but the forest also. It is like having a garden, which we weed to better the production of the desirable plants, but in a TSI you remove the less desirable tree species and disfigured trees, along with a few marketable ones. It will open up the forest canopy, thus stimulating more rapid growth of the trees remaining and encourage new understory

almost certainly be feeding on it; my hunch was correct. When I arrived at the stream just before noon, I could see some Cahills coming off and at least a half-dozen trout feeding. Even though the hatch was in progress, albeit not heavy, I started with a tandem rig and a beadhead Pheasant-tail nymph as my point fly. I quickly picked up three trout on the nymph, but the Cahills intensified, and so did the feeding trout. I switched to a 14 Light Cahill dryfly and continued to have hookups. Needless to say, it was a productive couple of hours. A couple of days later I found myself on another area stream at about the same time of day; I wondered, would the Cahills be coming off like they were at the

other location? They were. I immediately started with a 14 Light Cahill and enjoyed some great dryfly action over the next hour or two. The Light Cahill is definitely a fly to have in late May and into June, but I wouldn’t want to be without some size 16 Bluewinged Olives, Pale Evening Duns, and a selection of Caddis imitations. Take along a selection of nymphs as well, since trout will also be feeding on emerging nymphs. A Gold-ribbed Hares Ear and a beadhead Pheasant-tail are hard to beat. As we move into the summer months, it’s also wise to have a good selection of terrestrials on hand. Land-based insects are constantly falling into the water and trout will definitely feed on them. Grass-

hoppers, crickets, beetles, ants, and even bees are all potential trout takers. A Green Weenie is also a possibility. Fishing a tandem rig with a number 12 Cahill or an attractor fly like the Royal Coachman with a Green Weenie as the point fly covers the surface and below. I’m sure some other fly patterns would also produce, but the point is trout season is not over — it’s actually still productive — particularly if you are utilizing flies. There are a lot of books on the market that discuss fly patterns and when to use them. One of my favorites is Charlie Meck’s book, Meeting, and Fishing the Hatches. There are numerous other sources including the Internet; find out what’s hatching and enjoy some more trout fishing.

especially true if you are a fly-fisherman. That’s not to say that other techniques won’t work — some still produce, but trout are spooky by this time, and a more delicate approach seems to produce better. In addition, there are still some good hatches coming off, and trout are actively feeding on mayflies, caddis flies, and nymphs. Knowing what hatches are coming off, and having the right flies to duplicate, them goes a long way towards your success. I recently ran into a decent hatch of Light Cahills on a nearby stream. I say, “I ran into it” as though it were purely by accident, but it was no accident. I knew there was a good possibility that the hatch might be occurring and the trout would

in the early years the game was played at the end of the regular season which proved difficult because of the weather and athletes playing winter sports. In the mid-1990s the game was moved to June. Dell leads a committee of six, but all South Williamsport Lions Club members are involved in various capacities. Since its inception the games have raised nearly $300,000 for local charities. “This year, we have a major corporate sponsorship from UPMC Susquehanna, which has been a tremendous help,” Dell stressed. Additional sponsorships have come from the Democratic Club and the VFW in Duboistown. “My greatest satisfaction is seeing these kids get together, who were playing against each other during their high school seasons, become buddies during the days of practice for this game. That, coupled with knowing the money that is raised goes to local charities through our Lions Club projects, and other organizations is just a wonderful thing,” Dell added. “Max Dell deserves appreciative recognition for his dedication, and he’s been the driving force behind this game’s success over the years,” Gravish emphasized. Throughout the year he comes to our District Four Coaches Association monthly meetings and is very helpful to the coaches in working out all the details for this game.” Tickets for the June 29 game can be purchased at the gates, which will open at 6:00 p.m. Tickets are priced at $6.00 for adults and $4.00 for students. The game will also be broadcast over radio station WBZD Oldies 93.

ity.” Regarding practice time, Gravish tends to keep thing simple. “We have limited practice time to get ready for the game, so we try and keep things as simple as possible keeping in mind the special rules for the game. Defensively you have to play a 4-3, with all man-to-man coverage and no blitzing is allowed. Offensively, you can use any formation you’d like, but you have to keep it simple because you have so few days to prepare. You have to pass the ball 40% of the time and entering the fourth quarter if you aren’t at that 40% mark you get a penalty on every play. It’s a good rule for the fans. It opens the game up and highlights the skill players. “You are allowed five practice sessions. This Sunday we will meet with the guys at Wellsboro for about three plus hours. We won’t be practicing that long, but want to have the guys meet each other and go over expectations. We’ll then practice at Wellsboro on Monday and at Montoursville on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday there will be a light practice at South Williamsport, followed by a great banquet the Lions Club puts on for the teams, and then the game is Friday. “We are there to have fun, but we are going to be serious about what we are doing. We want to win the game and the kids that keep their composure throughout four quarters of football are the teams that win. The kids are all All-Stars, and everyone will play, but we will challenge them as to what they can each do to help us win the game in a positive way,’ stressed the coach. Now game chairman, Dell recalled that

SHOULD YOU TRUST A TRUST? Large Inventory of Zero Turn Mowers, Tractors and Construction Equipment

There are many types of trusts, each with a different purpose. Some are very beneficial for long-term care planning. Because trusts seem to be everywhere these days the Department of Human Services has established strict guidelines concerning which trusts receive favored treatment and which are problematic. In order to comply with DHS regulations the trust must be irrevocable. Because the trust cannot be undone careful consideration must be given prior to its execution and funding. In addition, funding an irrevocable trust within the 5-year period immediately preceding application for Medicaid benefits is considered a divestment under DHS regulations. The person creating the trust, the grantor, must not have access to the principal of the trust for any reason. If there are any circumstances under which a payment could be made from the trust to or for the benefit of the patient or patient’s spouse there is a strong likelihood the Department of Human Services will consider all of the resources held in the trust to be available and used to pay for long-term care. If these and other criteria are met a properly drafted irrevocable trust can be a successful vehicle to protect resources from the costs of long-term care. There are many variables in drafting a trust to meet your family’s particular circumstances and needs. Make careful choices when determining which assets work best to fund the trust. Know your elder law attorney and seek his advice for matters concerning your resources and the best opportunities to protect those resources for your family. The attorneys at Greevy and Shoemaker welcome the opportunity to help your family discuss trusts and whether one would fit your needs. As always, the first consultation is free.

sport of baseball to mold them into very respectable people. Their focus, dedication, and persistence took them places many programs do not get a chance to experience. Not to mention, we had a whole lot of fun along the way. It was a great year.” Things were a tad different across the bridge. This was Coach Jeremy Eck’s first season at his high-school alma mater. He is no stranger to postseason successes as Eck led Loyalsock to two state championships. Jeremy was back in the dugout after a oneyear hiatus. Expectations weren’t as high when Montoursville took the field this spring. Many thought that the Warriors were looking to rebuild. Well except for them. The Warriors finished at 19-3 and captured their first district championship

since 2010. The blue and gold made some noise by reaching the state semifinals. Eck’s club won fourteen straight and knocked off their nemesis, the Loyalsock Lancers, in a ten-inning instant district four classic. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a ride. MLB said they couldn’t use Bowman Field, and had to play this game 62 miles away. True story. Montoursville nipped Mount Carmel and Sock to win another banner. They later smoked Lakeland and Oley Valley before falling to Lancaster Catholic. The Warriors had a great mix of young talent and savvy vets. Sophomore sensation, Logan Ott, went 8-1 on the mound and had already decided on the University of Maryland. Senior Owen Kiess was also a tough out, and he provided the leadership. Several other

youngsters played valuable innings. Coach Eck even started two REAL freshmen. “Many thought that we were a year away,” Eck relayed. “No one had us winning a district title or competing for a state championship. We had a great group of kids who got better with each game. This team provided the foundation and helped get us back to where we want to be.” My friends Kyle Schneider and Jeremy Eck both led their respective clubs to spectacular seasons. One is a rook, and the other has returned. They can flat out coach and know the insides and outs. The local youngsters are extremely fortunate to have such mentors leading their programs. Well done mates. When can we start playing high school baseball games at Bowman? Cheers.

round and eventually fell to the Bensalem Fighting Owls in the state quarterfinals. Cody Shimp and Quentin Brown provided the pop. They led the Millionaires with seven home runs each. Shimp is off to Saint Bonaventure in the fall, and I believe Quentin is heading to LaSalle. Tanner Esposito was a stud on the mound. The crafty UMBC bound senior had a record of 8-2. He dominated them, and I used to play some golf with his dad. The Millionaires will miss these elders, but they have lots of talent coming back. I’d mention a few more names, but I sadly didn’t make it to any games because Historic Bowman Field was closed for the MLB Classic. “I am extremely proud of the men they have developed into,” Schneider explained while making a cast. “They allowed the

Fortin helped coach multiple district champs and state place winners. All in all, Fortin coached 17 district champions, 18 state qualifiers, ten wrestlers who placed at states, and four state champions. Fortin also helped raise close to $280,000 for Lycoming College through the Bud Whitehall Memorial Fund. The intended goal was $280,000 and with a year still left to go, Fortin has nearly raised that amount. The money will go directly to the Lycoming Wrestling program. Whitehall was the person who gave Fortin a chance to attend college and wrestle at the next level. Fortin didn’t think he would go to college out of high school, but when Whitehall called and asked him to attend Lycoming, Fortin’s parents quickly made him take up the offer. “He called me at home my senior year, and he wanted me to come to school,” Fortin said. “He took a big chance on me, and if it weren’t for him, none of this would have happened. That’s how much I think of him and still do.” The rest is history that will continue to be celebrated as the former and present wrestlers from Montoursville will look to keep the tradition going.

There was also plenty of humor. For tough-edged competitors who competed and coached at the highest levels of their sport, they sure knew how to tell jokes and keep a room captivated. After an outstanding meal provided by Johnson’s Cafe, Fortin took to the center of the room to begin the program. Again, Fortin’s impact was on full display as every person in the room quickly focused on their former coach. The head table featured 28 guests with most getting a chance to speak. “Everybody that was there was happy and they were glad to be involved,” Fortin said. “Even back in the old days, we had a tight-knit group. They all had fun and enjoyed themselves. They are already talking about doing it again in the future. It feels really good that they would want to get together and do it all again.” Emotions ran high for a couple of people as tears began to form through the stories of the past. Charles Dawson, one of the first wrestlers Fortin helped coach, spoke first. He talked about what it was like in the past to wrestle and how much the experiences meant to him. Fortin knew all the matches and results and didn’t let anyone slip.
