Footsteps and Flyballs for Great Causes By Jim Webb Jr.

T

he middle of July can mean one thing in our area, the Lycoming County Fair. The event began in 1870 as a way for farmers to show and compare their produce and livestock. The salt of the earth event is still going strong. There’s something to be found there for everyone from the demolition derby, tractor pulls, great entertainment, and all the competitions held by the 4-H. Not to mention that fabulous fair food, my favorite being the hot sausage sandwiches. I cannot forget the rides and games for the young and young at heart. If you haven’t been there in a few years, take some time to revisit the tradition of past and present at our County Fair. There is much more information in the pages ahead. For a couple of weeks, I’ve been meaning to get back to some great folks doing some fine work for a couple of local charities. I will begin with the efforts of the Williamsport Multiple Sclerosis Council and their MS Walk ‘Together We Are Stronger’ campaign. The original goal was to raise $19,000; currently, they exceeded that and are approaching the $28,000 mark. Tip of the Webb Weekly cap to all involved. Thank you to Ron Mingle for keeping me up to date on the community effort. Ron’s daughter Andi organized “Team Ming,” and as their leader has helped them to raise over $2,200. Which I believe currently ranks them 6th amongst the teams competing. The Together We Are Stronger campaign runs through July 28th, so there is still time to make a donation

to help Team Ming move up the rankings. For the information how you can help reach out to Ron Mingle at rmingle@webbweekly.com or 570-419-9826. Incidentally, congratulations to Andi and her husband Donny Sauers, the couple were married about a year ago and are expecting their first child. You couldn’t find any two better young folks to bring a child into this world. God bless and good luck. Andi would like me to give a shout out to Laura Templeton, Williamsport MS Council chairperson for the event. Laura who is employed at RETTEW has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Also a special thanks to RETTEW for allowing the organization to use their office space. Great job folks! Up next is Jake King and his annual Coaches/ Seniors versus Cancer baseball clash. This year he added a second contest — a Futures game. The best younger players from the area putting their talents on display for a great cause. Tip of the K’s for Cancer cap to Jake and all that helped for their efforts. What a great way to fight such a dreaded disease by using America’s pastime. Jake asked me if I would do a little post-game on the event, so here we go. The Senior players defeated the Coaches 11-8 in a game that was fun for all. The Justin Flannery Hilton Award presented to the MVP of the seniors went to Jensen Drick of Montgomery. Jensen had a great season for the Red Raiders and continued right on with his play during the game held at Logue Field in Williamsport. Coach Joel Worthington, who is the Millionaires’ JV coach, and an assistant to the varsity,

Pictured are: (left) Jensen Drick receiving the Justin Flannery Hilton Award with Rex and Jason Hilton, (center) Brandon Loner receiving the Rachael Shaner Kelleher Award with Madison and Connor Kelleher - Rachel’s kids, and (right) Joel Worthington receiving the Scott Grove Award with Nevin Grove. was honored with the Scott Grove Award for the Sun-Gazette, Baseballism, his mom Mel for the yearly t-shirt and blanket, the good being the MVP from the Coaches side. Last, but definitely not least, is my buddy Folks at Harder Sporting Goods, the umpires Brandon Loner from St. John Neumann. I — Frank Gardner, Jack Buttorf, Don Dunklehave gotten to know Brandon and his family berger, Dale Holcomb and Bill Wagner. Jim during our travels with West End Baseball as Winder and Sean McCann for the use of Hunter, and he played together. A great family Logue field, the Williamsport Baseball Boostthat does so much for the community espe- ers, K’s for Cancer, Pizza Hut, Pepsi-Cola, the Eastern Lycoming YMCA, the Williamsport cially the Special Olympics. Brandon won the Rachael Shaner Kelleher Crosscutters, and last but definitely not least, Award. This is an award presented to the play- the players, coaches and fans that helped make er that writes the best essay on how cancer has the day such a great success. One thing’s for affected their lives. Brandon wrote about his sure — it takes a village as the saying goes. The day raised nearly $4,000 in the effort to mother, Patty, and her battle against cancer. To date, she has won her battle against the disease strike out cancer. A tip of my Father’s beloved and is doing great. I always look forward to Salt Lake City Babe Ruth World Series cap to talking to her when our paths cross at a ball- you Jake. Hopefully this event, along with the Backgame — last time was at The Backyard Brawl. yard Brawl, District 4 championship games, Fantastic job Brandon, proud of you! In my conversation with Jake King as always and the first round State Tournament action he was very gracious and would like me to give will return to Historic Bowman field next year. God Bless America. a big thanks to the following: Chris Masse and

can’t believe that it is mid-July! Where has the summer gone? Before you know it, it will be time for back to school sales and the Little League World Series. This is actually one of my favorite times of year. There is something about the long nights and hot days that makes me happy. This is the perfect time of year to sit on the porch and read while watching the lightning bugs dance around. There is a lot going on in the area this time of year, no the least of which is the Lycoming County Fair. Lou has all the details for you on page 6, but this is always a great event to attend every year. Some people knit and some collect stamps, but I stand by that eating ‘carnival’ food is one of my favorite hobbies. From funnel cake and cotton candy, to French fries with vinegar and hot sausage, I can gorge myself pretty well at fairs and carnivals. I’m telling you, food just tastes better at the fair. While I think that food tastes better at the fair, what if you can’t get out this year? Have no fear, I’ve got your back! I’ve got recipes for two of my fair-favorites just in case you don’t make it to a fair or carnival this summer! Corn Dogs: Ingredients: • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1/2 cup yellow cornmeal • 1 tablespoon sugar

NURSING HOME AND ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY LANGUAGE They speak in code. Let’s be careful to try to understand everything they say and if you don’t understand, make them explain it. For example, ‘plateaued’, ‘discharged from therapy’, and ‘not benefitting’, when applied to services in a skilled nursing facility these words may all mean Medicare is no longer paying for the stay and the patient has become a self-pay patient at $10,000/month. Similarly, when signing a contract for care be sure you have not obligated yourself as ‘responsible party’ to pay for the cost of care. In addition, be careful you have not contracted to pay for an entire month in the facility if the patient leaves early. Assisted living facilities are very reluctant to refund a portion of a month even if a physician orders the patient’s transfer from the assisted living facility to a hospital or nursing home. This is complicated business that few people have the training and experience to understand, which can make the first encounter with an Assisted Living Facility or Nursing Home intimidating. At Greevy & Shoemaker we work with all of the local nursing homes on a daily basis and can explain to you what is the normal course, and intercede for you or on your behalf in dealing with the nursing home rules and language.

• 3 teaspoons baking powder • 1 teaspoon salt • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard • 1/4 teaspoon paprika • Dash pepper • 1 large egg, lightly Steph beaten Nordstrom • 1 cup evaporated milk • Oil for deep-fat frying • 12 to 16 wooden skewers • 12 to 16 hot dogs Directions In a bowl, whisk the first eight ingredients. Whisk in egg and milk just until blended. Transfer batter to a tall drinking glass. In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat oil to 375°. Insert skewers into hot dogs. Dip hot dogs into batter; allow excess batter to drip off. Fry corn dogs, a few at a time, 2-3 minutes or until golden brown, turning occasionally. Drain on paper towels. Serve immediately. In my world, it’s not a fair without funnel cake. So here’s a recipe for that too! Funnel Cake: Ingredients: • 2 eggs • 1 cup 2% milk • 1 cup water • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract • 3 cups all-purpose flour

• 1/4 cup sugar • 3 teaspoons baking powder • 1/4 teaspoon salt • Oil for deep-fat frying • Confectioners’ sugar Directions: In a large bowl, beat eggs. Add milk, water and vanilla until well blended. In another bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt; beat into egg mixture until smooth. In an electric skillet or deep-fat fryer, heat oil to 375°. Cover the bottom of a funnel spout with your finger; ladle 1/2 cup batter into the funnel. Holding the funnel several inches above the oil, release your finger and move the funnel in a spiral motion until all the batter is released, scraping with a rubber spatula if needed. Fry 2 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners’ sugar; serve warm. Note: The batter can be poured from a liquid measuring cup instead of a funnel. I hope you all are enjoying your summer! Get out and have some fun. Fall will be here before we know it, so don’t waste time! Go find something to do with friends and family!

lowered admission price, and a special section of the fair set aside especially for children called the “Amelia Earhart Funway,” are among the new things that fair officials are proud to point out about this year’s 148th edition of the Lycoming County Fair.” “We’ve lowered the price of admission this year from $6 to $4. Also, kids under 12 are free because we believe every kid deserves to enjoy the fair,” Lycoming County Fair President James “Rocky” Reed, told Webb Weekly. “We have a lot of new and exciting things going on this year. The Lycoming County Fair is introducing the Amelia Earhart Funway, a section of the fair set up specifically for kids. In this section there are many new attractions going on including Dino Roar, cow

pie bingo, pig races, peddle tractor pulls, as well as older attractions such as the petting zoo. We have a new carnival section this year from Sunshine Shows Amusements/Carnival. We will also be having new stars on both the free stages and grandstand including Run Away June and Jordan Davis.” And as usual, there will be various agriculture-related exhibits and judging events such as the Lycoming 4-H Youth Horse and Pony Fun Show, as many other farm livestock and displays. And of course there will be all kinds of great food on hand available to the hungry fair goer. Here is a listing of some of the things that will be featured at this year’s fair. The free entertainment includes: Kendall Phillips, Madeline Smith, Isaac Cole, Dan and Galla, the Highway Sisters, Kenzie McCar-

Rush, president of the bus company setting forth several reasons why the bus dispatchers, and bus operators, recommend the use of the space in Market Square for parking and transfer purposes, Councilman C. Grant Flexer moved that the change back to the square be authorized by council. The motion was approved by council without dissent. Yesterday’s action will mean the abandonment of the arrangements for parking the buses on both sides of West Third Street, between Pine and Court streets, which were made temporarily several weeks ago to afford the bus company and traveling public an opportunity to determine a proper terminal and transfer point.

Council did not indicate this morning whether or not parking privileges for private motorists will be restored on the south side of West Third Street after the removal of the bus zone. The Williamsport Transportation Company requested yesterday and received parking spaces in Market Square, and on Market Street at the entrance to the square. The reasons enumerated by the transportation company include: the abundance of space for parking and for the movement of through traffic in the square as compared to the narrower point in front of the court house, improved traffic and pedestrian control by the operation of traffic lights, availability of shelter, ease with which the dispatchers can control the movement of buses on connecting routes, and the evidence of public preference for the Market Square terminal. Mr. Bush recommended the removal of existing traffic standards and trolley safety zones and the substitution of one suspended traffic light.

The Jaded Eye…

I Got What I Wanted. Now What?

I

t must have been over seven years ago that I whined and moaned (using a Webb column as my venting post) that cool, functional, consumer-friendly items weren’t appearing before our very eyes as promised. You know, the flying cars, the interspace shuttles, the automatic kitchens, the rotating windmills in our yards. I mean, even the “revolutionary” midengine Corvette was making rounds in — 1973! 45 years later and they bet the house it’s here in 2020. I will believe it when I see it in person! Blame the withered old pages of Popular Science and Mechanics Illustrated magazines for making a young boy’s mouth water and making everything else seem obsolescent. We were to get atomic powered vehicles (couldn’t even pull off a turbine version), robots that served us dinner (someone deemed our mothers weren’t good enough), and weekly trips to Mars (we can’t even maintain local bridges, let alone intergalactic travel machines). But, it was fun to dream about the future and the products it would offer us. But I am here to report I’ve finally tasted some of these new features

on the menu, and I’m not entirely happy. In fact, mostly downright displeased! Let’s begin with transportation. Since the auto manufacturers have given up on offering anything in tasteful design (all current vehicles seem to look like angry, oversized insects ready to devour pedestrians) Gerry they’ve turned to fidgets and Ayers gadgets to gain your attention and money. Most of this stuff is “half-baked” and rushed to the market before full results can be reviewed. Because of that, paying consumers are forced to become “guinea pigs.” Do we really need modules instead of keys to activate our vehicles? The batteries go dead in them and then what? Then — you can’t open your doors! A key can still twist and gain admittance. Onto those “desirable” big, black screens of doom that now dominate your car’s dashboard. The Ford MyTouch and Cadillac Cue systems are just the tip of the iceberg of ones that infuriate me. Even “revised” editions do little in the way of improving your driving pleasure. They don’t save time, they actually waste time by you having to touch and

STAY SAFE IN THE SUN Summertime means more fun in the sun. Stay safe and cool with these tips: ✓ Use SPF 30 or higher sunscreen and reapply often. ✓ Wear UV protective clothing and sunglasses. ✓ Limit sun exposure during mid-day when the sun’s rays are most intense. ✓ Take breaks in the shade for relief from the heat and sun. ✓ Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

None of my cars have screens. All have knobs or simple to use buttons. I was in a new car recently when the entire screen system “blacked out.” Thus, there was NO access to climate, entertainment, navigation, or whatever else could or should be brought up. Funky future indeed. A typical example of how “first on the block” technology backfires. Stuff we never asked for in the first place. And if we did, we wanted it to work as intended! I’ve wasted enough breath on vehicles and their silly, non-ergonomic features. Let’s move on. It’s difficult if not impossible for me to operate the new wave of televisions and the cable or dish systems that go with it. These days, the remote control isn’t a “helper” but a handheld horror. For when you need a masters degree to master finding your local weather or a favorite channel, we have a problem. Anyone out there hurl their remote out the window to the squirrels? Go ahead, let them bury it! I’ve watched people at various electronic stores trying to figure out how all the digital is supposed to work in their favor. Teens pick it up quick, adults are less adept. This doesn’t mean older brains aren’t up to it; it means the future can be cruel. I swear older televisions didn’t break as much as the new ones. At least the ones my dad uses. Elon Musk is promising us mere

scroll and select to the point of total distraction. In fact, I think texting might be safer than actually trying to set the interior temperature, find the front defrost, or select a radio station. Then do it all over again in several minutes. Please. Give me simple knobs and dials to use. It takes milliseconds, not minutes. Look, when it takes several minutes to figure out how to start it, then another five minutes to get warm or cold, then another 10 to disarm the voice on the navigation system, we have problems that are working against us, not with us! Note to interface design teams: we wear gloves in the winter. Did anybody figure that out when trying to operate your screen devices? They don’t operate with gloves on! In fact, many times they don’t operate with gloves off! The glare off the screen is terrible and, the smudge marks that accumulate after a day of use would make Mr. Clean blush. Shame on all of you! And when they break? Since when should it take a small personal loan to fix your damn screen once the warranty runs out? It thrills me to tell you former auto executives, Bob Lutz included, have said this “force fed” technology upon us is ridiculous. He said its just one company trying to “out screen” another company. Problem is, when this crap fails, the company quality control and JD Power ratings plummet. So be it.

wound spring on a wooden board worked just as well, if not better, then the infrared tracking and false aroma “Mouse be gone” kit. Hungry cats prove quite a deterrent also. It’s not beneficial to me coming off as an old fart. I’m willing to embrace the future if it aids me (such as medicine) or prevents risk to life or limb. But when you have to read directions over and over and over again for something that used to be a snap isn’t future think, it’s futile think. If it doesn’t work better, yet costs much more, that also bears mentioning. Companies trying to pass off costs onto us knowing full well the older model was actually more user friendly and reliable. They tell me research and development doesn’t come cheap. Guess what? Neither does my sanity trying out some of this new future frivolity. I don’t need a self-driving car. That in itself is Jetson like. That’s because I am still proficient at using a steering wheel and pedals. But man, where is that self propelled, automatic sensing lawnmower I saw in 1950s news reel footage? That thing actually does make sense for older people, invalids, or a heat wave! (Editor’s Note: Gerry, this is actually a thing now!) So why are they holding out on us? My lawn is just begging to know.

mortals (the general public) space travel soon, and has already tested a few rocket ships. Two red flags: first, it costs six figures for the privilege of entering another atmosphere. Second, with his electric cars setting themselves on fire and running into barricades during auto mode, I am not sure his rockets are ready for prime time. As a kid it looked swell going to the moon and battling aliens. However, now it may be best to keep both feet planted on the front porch and fight weeds. Other “future think” things that have made my life harder, not simpler. Online banking. Sure, if the laptop wants to function properly and the banks computer infrastructure hasn’t crashed and burned all may go as planned. Till then, I stroll the bank lobby. My neighbors are the Jones, not the Jetsons. And if you think I can’t keep up with the Jones, the Jetsons have opened up an entirely new saga in my life. It’s not jealousy, it’s frustration. For when those cool futuristic items lose their luster, we’re stuck looking for something else that will suffice. Thus, the companies rush out with more unproven, but hyped up product. People are inclined to buy old style mouse traps before engaging in unproven, but newfangled devices. Last time I checked, cheese and a tightly

County Hall Corner A Lesson in Leadership By Larry Stout

very basic rule in business is that managers manage and leaders lead. Both are important. Every company, large or small, lives or dies on how well those in management are able to get the most out of whatever resource they manage. However, this is all based on maintaining a status quo. What happens, though, when the circumstances change? When technology, or government requirements, or preferences of a particular market change — how is this going to be ‘managed?’ This is when leadership is required. By definition, a leader must move the people they represent in a new and different direction. This is never easy because management navigates the known, whereas leadership must travel in the unknown. Like the comment about a dog walking on its hind legs, we should not evaluate how well it is done, we should marvel that is done at all. Kurt Hausammann Jr., Director of the Lycoming County Planning and Community Development Department, and Deputy Director Kim Wheeler, are leaders of the first order. They were given a task two and a half years ago to develop an update to the comprehensive plan for the county. That might not sound so difficult, but in truth, it was probably one of

the more challenging tasks ever undertaken by a county department. The previous plan that needed updating was one that relied heavily on outside consultants. Besides being very costly (some $900,000), it was also somewhat boilerplate in nature. It dealt with issues from a somewhat top-down view, which made implementation more difficult. The county commissioners felt that it would be better that the update be done in-house. After all, the Comprehensive Plan is the blueprint for the government’s actions. When applying for state and federal grants and aid, the first thing that is looked at is whether the request is in the Comprehensive Plan. It identifies major issues and then what particular programs and projects that can address these issues, thus showing how to move forward on these areas in the future. Does it not

HIV AND HEPATITIS C TESTING Thursday, July 19th (9:00 am to 3:00 pm)

Northwest Alliance will be at River Valley Health & Dental Center to provide HIV and Hepatitis C testing.

LEADERSHIP make sense to get input from those closest to these issues and areas of concern? The idea was sound, but it would require a herculean task on behalf of the Lycoming County Planning and Community Development Department. Beginning in September 2015, the work was laid out that would result in a grind that would take nearly three years. Every member of the department was involved, and not a single new person was hired to assist in this work. In fact, due to a cost-cutting initiative by the county commissioners, the department actually cut three and a half positions over this time period. The four members of the planning section worked on the public meetings for input as well as the writing of the report, the six GIS members did the analysis, the mapping, and public outreach, the four transportation section members worked on data analysis and statistics related to transportation areas, the five development services staff members worked on land use analysis and changes necessary for new mappings, and two individuals of the administrative support staff were tasked with all the word processing work. All this work, on top of their regular workload, meant the sacrifice of many an evening, weekends, and missed lunches. Months of meetings, discussions, and public hearings were held throughout the county, not a stone was left unturned to listen and learn. Going the second mile, they not only were working on updating

the county’s comprehensive plan, but also the did the same with the six multi-municipal comprehensive planning areas. It was not just the data collection, analysis, and research that was done, but it all had to be integrated together into a coherent whole. What they produced is an extraordinary document. During the final presentation at the County Commissioners Meeting at their June 28th meeting, Commissioner Mirabito noted that it read like it was written by one author, but Deputy Director Wheeler insured them that nearly everyone in the department had a hand in the writing. Director Hausammann emphasized that best of all, this is a practical, implementable plan for moving ahead for Lycoming County. In that sense, it is truly a leadership plan. Director Hausammann and Deputy Director Wheeler forged the twenty-one members of their department into a high engine machine that accomplished the impossible. And so it is appropriate that the final project was named, Lycoming 2030: Plan the Possible. The Lycoming County Planning and Community Development Department proved that the impossible is possible. The 2018 Lycoming County Comprehensive Plan Update can be accessed by going to the county’s website, lyco.org, under ‘departments’ go to “Planning and Economic Development.’

two options: Breakfast for Dinner, or Tomato Soup & Grilled Cheese. Granted, these aren’t the healthiest choices, but they’re great in a pinch and can be very satisfying after a long day at work. Now, with breakfast I’m not talking cereal, but instead eggs with bacon and/or busting out some Bisquick for pancakes. French toast also works. For tomato soup and grilled cheese you can add bacon, or lunch meat to the sandwich for some protein and it’s easy to tack on a salad to this meal for some veggies. Of course, all of these tricks can go right out the window on Fridays, when anything goes. And now that we’re in the midst of Lent we’re all about fish sandwiches, so there’s no cooking on that night for the time being. Bon Appetit!

If you’re an early riser, a crockpot meal is a great go-to for weekday dinner. The best part is it’ll be ready to serve by the time you get home in the evening, and it’s definitely a savory source for leftovers. I like to do a whole chicken in the pot with red potatoes (if they are on the smaller side no need to peel and slice, just clean them) garlic and onions (that if I’m super organized have already been cut up as mentioned above) and a bottle of dry white wine as opposed to water. When we get home I open up a bagged salad and voila dinner, and lunches for the next day! When all else fails I resort to one, of

Cool Summertime Kitchen Hacks

S

ummer is a time for relaxing, enjoying the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. Yet for some, the warmer months can be hectic and busy, and often go by too quickly. When the little ones have soccer practice and the adults need some alone time by the pool, there isn’t always time to prepare a home-cooked meal or toil away in the kitchen. Ideal summertime meals, snacks and drinks should be refreshing, light, delicious and of course, easy on time and your budget. Try these fresh summertime kitchen hacks and enjoy more time outdoors with friends and family, and less time sweating in the kitchen.

Ice Pop Paradise: For an easy dessert, try making homemade ice pops. Puree your favorite fruit with honey then add it to an ice pop mold. Add Greek yogurt and freeze. For more flavor, add mint or basil. Coffee Delight: Coffee is often enjoyed hot, but during the summer, cooling things down can be a refreshing alternative. Make coffee and, after it cools at room temperature, blend it with ice and milk. This chilled version can keep you caffeinated and cool during those extra hot days. Wishing for Watermelon: Watermelon might be the unofficial fruit of summer; it’s sweet, refreshing and a backyard barbecue staple. However, it can be messy, difficult to

cut and challenging to devour. For less mess and more enjoyment, cut the watermelon in half crosswise then cut each half vertically into a grid to create easy-to-eat, snackperfect sticks of watermelon. No-Mess Sides: After a long day at work, going home to cook is one of the last things many people want to do. Try something quick, easy and multi-purpose like mixand-serve slaw. Combine one bag of slaw mix with one jar of Litehouse Coleslaw Dressing, which is made extra thick and creamy with freshly made mayonnaise for a perfect blend of sweet and tangy. The dressing is sold cold, so there is no need for chill time - just mix and serve. This cool, crunchy slaw can be served as a side dish or used as a topping on burgers or tacos for a summertime meal that’s fresh and

delightful. Slow-Cooked Perfection: Keep your house and your kitchen cooler by using a slow cooker instead of heating up the oven. Slow cookers are typically easy to use, retain more heat and won’t overheat your living space. They can make cooking indoors simple and cool, even if it’s blazing hot outside. Keep Drinks Chilled: Ice cubes are the usual way to keep your summer beverages chilled, but ice cubes can melt quickly, especially if you’re outdoors. Instead of overflowing your glass with ice, try a sweet and juicy fruit flavor. Place grapes, raspberries, kiwi or any other kind of fruit on a skewer and freeze. You can easily dip, stir and keep your drink cool with this tasty trick - and then enjoy the fruit when your drink is empty. (Family Features & Litehouse)

Negative Social Media Experiences May Have More Impact than Positive Experiences on Depression

N

egative experiences on social media carry more weight than positive interactions when it comes to the likelihood of young adults reporting depressive symptoms, according to a new University of Pittsburgh analysis. “We found that positive experiences on social media were not related or only very slightly linked to lower depressive symptoms. However, negative experiences were strongly and consistently associated with higher depressive symptoms,” said

lead author Brian Primack, M.D., Ph.D., dean of the Honors College and director of theCenter for Research on Media, Technology and Health at Pitt. “Our findings may encourage people to pay closer attention to their online exchanges. Moving forward, these results could assist scientists in developing ways to intervene and counter the negative effects while strengthening the positive ones.” In August 2016, Primack and his team surveyed 1,179 full-time students ages 18 to 30 at the University of West Virginia about

their social media use and experiences. The participants also completed a questionnaire to assess their depressive symptoms. Each 10 percent increase in positive experiences on social media was associated with a 4 percent decrease in odds of depressive symptoms, but those results were not statistically significant, meaning that the finding could be due to random chance. However, each 10 percent increase in negative experiences was associated with a 20 percent increase in the odds of depressive symptoms, a statistically significant finding. “It is valuable to know that positive and negative experiences are very differently related to depression,” said Primack. “But we don’t know from our study whether the negative social media interactions actually caused the depressive symptoms or whether

depressed individuals are more likely to seek out negative online interactions. As with many things in social science, the answer is probably some combination of the two, but more research will be needed to disentangle cause and effect.” Other characteristics also were linked to the participants having depressive symptoms. For example, compared with men, women had 50 percent higher odds of having depressive symptoms. Identifying as non-white and having only completed “some college,” rather than completing a degree, also were associated with higher odds of depressive symptoms. All of these characteristics have previously been shown to increase a person’s likelihood of depression. While the findings still need to be

significant, Primack said that increasing the opportunities for positive experiences on social media is still likely to be worthwhile. “In other studies, engaging in certain forms of social media use has been shown to enhance communication and social connection,” he said. “Certainly, there are many situations in which connecting with others in this way might actually lower depressive symptoms. That just wasn’t the primary finding in this particular study.” Additional authors on this research are Meghan A. Bisbey, B.A., Ariel Shensa, M.A., Sabrina A. Karim, B.A., and Jaime E. Sidani, Ph.D., all of Pitt; and Nicholas D. Bowman, Ph.D., and Jennifer M. Knight, M.A., both of West Virginia University. This research was funded by the Fine Foundation.

replicated, Primack said public health practitioners could start using them to educate the public of the risks of negative social media interactions. He also points out that cyberbullying occurs not only among adolescents, but also among adults. Universities, workplaces and community spaces could use the findings to increase awareness around positive and negative social media experiences. Primack noted that health care professionals working with depressed patients could suggest strategies to improve the quality of online experiences, such as restricting time spent on social media to reduce the number of negative interactions and “unfriending” people or groups that tend to enable negative experiences. Although the finding was not statistically

Main dish options for outdoor entertaining

erving up an outdoor meal is a summertime staple for gatherings of all kinds — barbecues, celebrations, picnics and more. However, with so many options available and different styles for preparing the dishes, it can be a challenge for home chefs to decide what guests will go for. Instead of racking your brain or spending hours searching for the right main course, consider these versatile options — one dish focused on chicken, one

for beef and one for pork — that can send partygoers back for seconds. Serve Up Skewers Ideal for simple family meals or fullblown summertime parties, these Honey-Lime Chicken Skewers are an ideal handheld food for outdoor meals. With just a handful of ingredients and an easy grilling method involved, they’re tasty and tantalizing without taking your focus off all the fun and festivities. More honey-infused recipes

are available at Honey.com. Honey-Lime Chicken Skewers Recipe courtesy of The National Honey Board Servings: 8 • 2 tablespoons honey • 3 tablespoons soy sauce • 1 tablespoon olive oil • 1 lime, juiced • 1 pound chicken breast strips, skinless and boneless • bamboo skewers In small bowl, whisk honey, soy sauce, olive oil and lime juice until completely blended. aving grown up in Lycoming County, and spent most of the years of my life roaming its hills and streams, it has been a natural progression to be an avid lover of nature and to enjoy the outdoor sporting opportunities that this wonderful area provides. Through the years, my respect and admiration of all the wonders of nature has continued to grow — except for the rattlesnake and the red squirrel! Yes, I am well aware of the interaction of all species, and that each and every creature has a purpose in the balance of our natural world, but these two do not fulfill a purpose that cannot be fulfilled by other much more pleasant species. At least, this is my opinion, which you may or may not share. Take the rattlesnake, for example. While they do prefer to be left alone and, if they sense your presence, would rather move out of your way and be left undisturbed, they can, on occasion, be somewhat aggressive. It is said that during the period when they are shedding their skins and their eyes become glazed over in the process that they can be more aggressive. With their reduced visibility, they may tend to lash out, or strike at things that their limited vision does not allow them to identify properly. And there are the times when, if you come upon them suddenly

and they are surprised by your presence, they may strike out of a sense of self defense. This is natural on their part, but it can have very unpleasant results for you or your pet. So what can you do? The first step is to educate yourself about our timber rattlers. It was just last year that the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced that they were taking the timber rattlesnake off the endangered list because their numbers had finally increased to a level where they no longer needed to be listed as endangered in Pennsylvania. For you, that means that there is an increased chance that you may encounter one when hiking, hunting, or fishing. But, if you leave them alone, they tend to leave you alone. Legally, there is a rather complex procedure in place if you wish to take a rattlesnake and wish to comply with the laws. First, you will need a current fishing license and must obtain a valid annual permit to hunt, take, catch, kill or possess a timber rattlesnake (or copperhead, for that matter). With the proper license and permit, you can take one per year during the season of June 9 to July 31, 2018. It must be at least 42 inches in length and must possess 21 or more subcaudal scales (identifying it as a male). But there is more to the regulation, and if you are serious about the proper procedures, you need to refer to the 2018 edition of the

Around your house or surrounding buildings, they have been known to chew on phone and electrical wiring, sometimes causing appreciable damage. Red squirrels are (perhaps unfortunately) lumped in with the gray and fox squirrels and thus are legally taken only during the regular seasons for squirrel hunting. (Who the heck would eat a red squirrel?). If, however, you are having a problem with a red squirrel entering a building and doing damage to equipment or wiring, you may be able to get permission from the Northcentral Regional office of the Pennsylvania Game Commission in Jersey Shore to eradicate it. If you are having any problems with either of these species, there are legal ways to deal with them. And now you know!

Pennsylvania Fishing Summary handbook. Reptile seasons, limits, and regulations are covered on page 17 of the manual. In support of leaving rattlesnakes alone, I was told by an unnamed Fish and Boat Commission Law Enforcement Officer that, “You should leave rattlesnakes alone since they are what keep the ‘Flatlanders” at home in the city!” As for the red squirrel, well, he can be an annoying and nasty little fellow. He is the one that sits on a nearby pine tree limb and chatters continually his warning to all other game — alerting them to your presence when you are trying to sit quietly in wait for an unsuspecting turkey or deer to come by. And he has a nasty appetite for flesh! Yes, they have been known to eat bird eggs and even young baby birds!

statewide on April 27, 2019, with a one-day youth hunt held on April 20. There are of course a number of other rule changes that are set for specific areas of the state such as additional hen pheasant hunting in some new areas and increased fisher trapping opportunities in WMUs 4B and 4C. Again check your regulation summary for more details. In the meantime while waiting for some of that cooler weather to start kicking in, you may want to wet a line; even in this hot weather if you play it right, you can still hook up with some trout, bass, and assorted panfish.

ing in yourself and chasing your dreams. Arriving at Penn State in the midst of the Sandusky scandal aftermath and the NCAA sanctions, he was among two-dozen walk-ons trying to gain the coaches’ attention and gain playing time. Like others, he spent time grumbling about the coaches, and what he perceived to be their lack of attention to his abilities. Understanding that this approach was not succeeding, he took it upon himself to work as hard as he could and be the best teammate possible. Ultimately, injuries to other linebackers gave him an opportunity, and he rose to the occasion. Smith appeared in all 13 PSU games as a senior including four

He was named Penn State’s recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award and was named semi-finalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy, awarded by the National Football Foundation to recognize an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete. He also was pursuing his own professional dream having just returned from a pre-season Buffalo Bills training camp. Whether he ever plays in the NFL is a long shot, but like Datres and Johnson, he has embraced the opportunities coming his way.

MOTORS

41 • Webb Weekly July 11, 2018

His most important thing he has to work towards is getting on the floor and getting some minutes. We are trying different things with him throughout the summer practices and training camp. It’s going to be fun for him. He’s got a high motor, and I love it. He has the ability to guard multiple players, and he’s got to learn different NBA concepts and absorb as much as he can.” In a recent interview with the Indianapolis Star, Johnson expressed eagerness with his new challenge. “I have to do things different being the underdog. I know I’ve got to show something I can do consistently. Rebounding is about effort. I’m all about hard work

great smile and is an inspiration to many. Delaney is an amazing young lady and has defied all odds. Perhaps that’s another story for a different time. She is an exceptionally sweet kid and is an expert at cornholing for a cause. “My family and I always try to give back whenever we can.” Heath continued. “Hosting tournaments is something we do to help raise funds. Obviously, we have a special place for many worthy causes including the Ronald McDonald House.” Join Heath and me for a very special Cornhole Tournament at Pier 87 on Saturday, July 21st. Bags fly at noon, and all proceeds go directly to the Ronald McDonald House of Danville. Registration is $50 per team, and there will be two separate brackets — Competitive and Social. Only 32 teams per each division, so get on the horn. Register by reaching out to Ginnetta Reed at 570-271-7937/glreed@ rmhdanville.com or call the Pier at 570435-0290. Each player will receive a custom t-shirt and lunch. Tons of raffles, door prizes, 50/50 drawings and much more. Booze is available for purchase. Several sponsorship opportunities are still available. Please reach out Ginnetta for more information. Should be a most excellent time. Cheers.

doubles or singles. In doubles play, four players split into two teams. One member pitches from one platform and the other throws from the other. The first side of players alternate pitching until both players have thrown all four of their bags, then the players pitching from the opposing board alternate in the same manner. Cornhole matches are broken down into innings, and each player throws four bags per. A cancellation scoring method is typically used to determine a winner. In the most common version, the total score for each team is totaled after every inning, and the difference of the two is awarded to the team with the higher score. For example, if one team lands two bags in the hole and one on the board for seven points, and the other team lands one bag in the hole and two on the board for five points, five points from the round would cancel out, and the first team would score two points. A cornhole match is played until the first player or team reaches 21 points. The winning team does not need to win by two or more points in most games. Make sense? Heath and BACKWOODS BOARDS have hosted many fundraising events through throwing bags. His lovely daughter, Delaney, has been battling cancer since she was a kid. She has a

son paid off means a lot. It was an amazing experience. Growing up going to the LLWS and seeing those kids on cloud nine, that’s the same feeling I had the whole time in Omaha. I was just happy I had a good series and did everything I could to help our team.” Datres was an All-ACC selection at third base and led his team in being hit by pitches. The last stat is important because a belt designed by Datres and his teammates goes to the player hit by the most pitches. Datres is a tough player and used that ability to gain an edge to reach base as many times as possible. Not only did it work, but it created a highlight for fans of the team. Nearly every time the North Carolina’s dugout was shown on television the belt was visible. “My whole family made the trip out to Omaha, even most of my extended family was there at some point,” Datres said. “I had over 20 people come to see me at the World Series. I was able to see them every day I was out there. They all just dropped everything to come support me, that just shows how lucky I am to have them.” Datres was drafted and played in the College World Series over a two-week period. It was a dream any young player would be more than happy to live, but for Datres the journey has only just started. “My favorite part, that’s a tough question. I would have to say playing in the CWS with all of my best friends,” Datres said. “I had a pretty good idea that I would get drafted this year, but I didn’t know I would have the chance to play in Omaha. I had the time of my life out there.”

The next part of the journey might have been his favorite as he informed his family of the news. “I was so excited to tell my family that I had finally been picked,” Datres said. “My family means everything to me, and I know I could not have ever made it to this point of my baseball career without all of them, so to tell them that I had been drafted was surreal. They were so proud and happy for me. I am very lucky to have the supportive family that I do.” Datres grew up in Loyalsock and through hard work and the constant support of his family he accomplished something most people can only dream of reaching. “It just shows that anything can happen if you really put your mind to it, and work for what you want,” Datres said. “It doesn’t matter who you are or where you come from.” Datres grew up in Williamsport, which has the perfect highlight to the end of the season for area ballplayers. The Little League World Series is something each, and every fan of the sport should take in. Since Datres grew up in the area, he quickly learned just how involved the process of reaching levels that high would be. He saw the players and families and what each game meant to them. He also got to see how amazing it was for the players to compete at that level. He never reached the Little League World Series, but he did get to participate in the College version earlier this year. “The CWS is something I will never forget,” Datres said. “To know all of the hard work that my team and I put into the sea-
