Creating a Diversion of Division By Jim Webb Jr.

I

t’s great to have Pastor Tim Hartzell’s words back within the pages of the Webb Weekly (Pg. 18). Pastor Tim has had a full plate this year working for the good of Jesus Christ and taking care of things at Faith Wesleyan Church. If you haven’t read Pastor Tim in the past, please do. He has a great approach to bringing God’s word out of the Bible and applying it to everyday life. I hope it’s evident to everyone the war that is taking place. It transcends all boundaries. Everyone is fighting it. It is extremely difficult to tell who is on what side. It is the oldest battle ever waged, that of Good vs. Evil. Please approach everything you watch, read, and encounter with this in mind. Especially on social media. The world is full of lies and deceit that may be targeting more than you think. As you know, I believe President Trump is his own worst enemy. I have stated on numerous occasions he needs to put the cell phone down and operate from a position of power. For whatever reason, he just cannot do this; he has to open up that mouth or send that tweet. This is a real problem when you’re the President of the United States. This also provides anyone in opposition to the president an endless wealth of verbiage to use against him. With that being said, all those working against the President that put politics first, agendas first, network ratings first, the bottom line first, or anything but what’s good

for America first, have reached alarming levels. The New York Times article “I am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration” is a perfect example of both in action. Our President should have operated from a position of power and played down the article — instead, he made it his public and cyber platform and empowered the article. This would have never happened within the Obama Administration. Not that President Obama didn’t have folks that would leak out information, but he would deal with them on the QT. This is one of the reasons why he went through so many cabinet members. He was notorious within his own party for closing the ranks within the Oval Office of all those who he came in contact with. What happened within his administration stayed within his administration. He weeded out those who were not committed to his leadership. This is a common problem no matter what business, organization or agency you work within in today’s world. Loyalty is long gone. It’s how you handle the problem that defines the level of crisis it becomes. President Trump should use the same tactics. That being said, the New York Times running with the article in today’s political climate is ridiculous. The New York Times has many problems with its journalistic integrity in recent years. On several occasions, stories have appeared on page one of the op-ed page that were completely false, completely fake news! The New York Times dealt with

writers of this fiction, but it’s hard to put the toothpaste back in the tube. For them to run the recent story without its author putting his or her John Hancock is unacceptable. But that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to unjustified journalism in regards to President Trump. I watched CNN’s Don Lemon the night before Hurricane Florence hit the Carolina coast blame President Trump for the deaths in Puerto Rico during the last major hurricane and then go on to basically say whatever occurs during Hurricane Florence is President Trump’s doing. According to Mr. Lemon, you would have thought President Trump conjured up the hurricane. Up next was Brian Williams on MSNBC, another real anchor of factual news and journalistic integrity. I don’t believe one word he spoke was justified or not driven by a far-left political agenda, which included President Trump taking $10 million from FEMA and funneling it to ICE. Of course, the money was used to help build internment camps for the children of illegal immigrant parents. The story was completely false, although folks believed it. The funny thing was that after the story was proven false, it continued to run on MSNBC. Moving right along. I then came upon a video of the upper management folks of Google the night of the last presidential election that you have to see to believe. Talking about political bias, they basically held a funeral service because Hillary lost the election. Some even questioning if their country could survive without her as president. All of them appeared like they just suffered some horrific personal loss. It was

disgraceful. When President Barack Obama was elected, the one thing I thought that would happen was a more united America. The complete opposite happened. I often would write about Mr. Obama’s policies being bad for our Nation. But at no time did I ever want to see anything but what was best for our Country. I would never root against any President to fail or imply worse like the New York Times’ article did. Doing so would be rooting against the United States of America and our One Nation Under God to succeed. But one thing that becomes more and more obvious each and every day is that the far liberal left would be happy if our Nation burned as long as they gained control and power. Please understand this is not directed at the Democratic Party as a whole, only the tail that seems to be wagging the dog. What makes matters much worse is the fact that all those mainstream and cyber journalists do nothing but try to undermine the President of the United States and create chaos. You have a responsibility to use your freedom of speech and/or press to report the truth. It is your responsibility to educate the masses and allow our Democratic process to work. Not to undermine and create a divided society that encourages violence. On 9/11, I remembered how united our Country became following the attacks on American soil. How everybody in Washington was working together to preserve and protect our freedom. How soon we forget. I only hope it doesn’t take another horrific event to get us back to that patriotic togetherness. God Bless America.

How to Help

Founder James Webb Sr. 1944-2012

As of this writing the southern east coast is bracing to take the brunt of Hurricane Florence. After a natural disaster strikes, it is our natural inclination to want to help. But what are the best ways to actually help? Here are several ways to help in the wake of floods, hurricanes, earthquakes and other natural disasters. 1. Donate your Money You can donate your money to a variety of programs, the obvious organizations being the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and the United Way. You can also look up programs local to the disaster-affected area by searching the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (NVOAD) state and territory members list. Money will always be the best donation you can make. 2. Volunteer to Raise Money Whether you ask coworkers to pitch in, start a collection at church, or even ask your neighbors if they’d like to donate — just ask. You can also put a fundraiser collection jar or box at work, school, or church so people can donate when they can. While people may be inclined to donate items, they usually aren’t as beneficial as you think. The logistics of getting them to where they need to be, and distributed can be a disaster in itself. Items to avoid donating are:

• Bottled water (it’s too expensive to ship) • Canned food (shipping and climate control can compromise the food) • Toys Steph • Clothes Nordstrom • Medical supplies (they can’t verify the quality of the products) Again, this is a situation where money talks. In reality, the money you send to relief efforts actually goes towards the purchase of these items in a way that is easier in terms of logistics, and can actually help stimulate the disaster-ridden area’s economy. 3. Give Blood By now, you guys know that I am a huge proponent of donating blood. Floods and the like can destroy blood banks, and power outages can make supplies worthless also, so now is the time to go out and donate. Check out redcross.org for a list of local blood drives. Health care and medical attention are one of the most immediate concerns in the path of a major storm or natural disaster. While medical corporations and government agencies often donate medical supplies and send in medical professionals, they can’t simulate life-giving

Featuring #

blood. People all over the country can donate blood to help those affected in these areas. These are just a couple of ways that you can help those affected by natural disaster. But please be sure that you are donating to legitimate organization, whether you do that on a national level or seek out local organizations in the affected areas. Novad.org is a good place to start. NOVAD also reminds you that is you are interested in physically volunteering in an area to never self-deploy. “Seeing images of disaster may compel you to head to the impacted area. Don’t underestimate the complexity of working in a disaster area. Until a need has been identified and the local community impacted has requested support, volunteers should not enter.” They also advise to: – Be sure to affiliate with existing voluntary organizations before coming to the disaster area, and that organization has been asked to respond. – Wait until it is safe to travel to volunteer sites and opportunities have been identified. – Once assigned a position, make sure you have been given an assignment and are wearing proper safety gear for the task. Be patient. Recovery lasts a lot longer than the media attention. There will be volunteer needs for many months, often years, after the disaster – especially when the community enters the long-term recovery period.

Hunger Action Month is your opportunity to join a movement that has a real and lasting impact on our effort to feed more Americans than ever before. Whether it’s by advocating and raising awareness, making donations, or volunteering, individuals can find the way that’s right for them to make a difference during Hunger Action Month. By visiting the Food Bank online at https://www.centralpafoodbank.org/ HungerActionMonth, you can stay involved throughout the month by downloading the Hunger Action Month Calendar under ‘Participate.’ Here is a little about the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and what they have done and still do to battle the problem of hunger in this area. What started as a one-day demonstration project on World Food Day in 1981 to address the needs of families struggling with hunger has now turned into the largest non-profit food distribution organization in central Pennsylvania. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (under the umbrella of Feeding America and Feeding Pennsylvania) serves 27 counties from the border of Maryland to the border of New York. For more than 30 years there have been many positive changes to the organization, including expansions to both healthy food hub locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport to better serve the community. By working with more than 1,000 local

ost people think of hunger and nutritional problems as just occurring in poor, underdeveloped or war-torn countries, but it exists here in our own backyard of central Pennsylvania and one organization — the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank — is trying to do something about that. September is Hunger Action Month, and the people at the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank are marking this through their involvement in this activity, which helps to shine a light on the problem of hunger. “The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is mission-driven: fighting hunger, improving lives, and strengthening communities. Hunger Action Month is key to our mission as we connect with everyone in the community to raise awareness on the continued fight against hunger.” Carla Fisher, marketing & communications coordinator, told Webb Weekly. “The feeling of running on empty is a reality for more than five million Pennsylvanians. We need to make sure that no child, adult or senior in our communities ever runs on empty, so this September, we’re asking everyone to come together to help end hunger.” September is Hunger Action Month when the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank joins others across America to take action in fighting hunger across our communities.

in need. The expansion helped our local farms continue to reduce food waste, ensuring that millions more pounds of wholesome food reach family dinner tables instead of landfills. The need in our community (Northern Tier): – With a population of 785,000 in the Northern Tier counties, 109,510 individuals are food insecure – 14 percent of the population – Of those individuals, 22 percent, or 33,660 are children – 65 percent of those served live at or below federal poverty levels Rural hunger is the most costly due to dispersed population and limited community programs. They serve the 13 Northern counties of central Pennsylvania: Bradford, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Potter, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga and Union. The programs of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reach more than 140,000 neighbors each month and include ElderShare, MilitaryShare (aimed at veterans in the community), Fresh Express, BackPack Programs, Kids Café, Summer Pantries, and Summer Feeding. How the Food Bank works: The Food Bank solicits, inventories and distributes food and other donated products to more than 1,000 partner agencies (food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, etc.) that directly serve people struggling with hunger. In 2017, the Food Bank distributed over 55 million pounds of nutritional food. That is the equivalent of 46 million meals!

agencies, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank provided over 46 million meal since 2017. They serve more than 140,000 neighbors in need each month in the 27 counties. Food is a basic need for people to be healthy, engaged citizens. The demand for food continues to rise. In Pennsylvania, one in nine residents, including one in six children, face food insecurity, according to Feeding America. Based on these statistics, the Food Bank announced a ten-year Bold Goal of providing access to enough nutritious food for everyone struggling with hunger in each of the 27 central Pennsylvania counties they serve, and they will convene and nurture partnerships to make progress toward ending hunger by 2025. Expansion of the Williamsport facility was critical to achieving the Bold Goal. In 2016, the Williamsport Healthy Food Hub went through capital improvements and increased their distribution of more than 1.2 million pounds of fresh food in its first year. – Healthy Food Hub transformed from 17,000 square feet to 30,000 square feet – Dry storage space: expanded from 7,200 square feet to 11,264 square feet – 1,000 rack spaces for at least 1 million pounds of food – Trucks docks increased from 1 to 4 The capital improvements at the Williamsport facility will enable the Food Bank to obtain, handle and distribute fresher local farm food products, such as fruits, vegetables, milk, and other dairy items at a lower cost to serve our neighbors

Preparing for the Polls Part 1 – Washington Awaits By Larry Stout

I

n just seven weeks, area residents will be joining the rest of the nation by going to the polls to vote. This week Webb Weekly is beginning a series of articles that will begin with our candidates for Washington, followed in the weeks ahead with those in Harrisburg, and concluding with the very important vote on the local issue of the proposed reorganization of Williamsport city government. In Lycoming County, we will be voting for a U.S. Senator and a U.S. Representative to Congress. For the Senate, the two major parties are represented by the incumbent, Democrat Senator Bob Casey Jr. who is running for his third term, and the Republican nominee, former U.S. Representative, Lou Barletta. Lou Barletta is from Hazelton but has local ties as he attended Bloomsburg University in the 1970s. From college, he went into the family construction business, then started his own business at age 28, and then jumped into politics as a Hazelton city council

member, followed by three terms as mayor of Hazelton. Hazelton is a predominantly Democratic city, and what makes Barletta a unique Republican is that he has won all of his elections in predominately Democratic districts. In 2002, Barletta ran for the U.S. Congress as the Republican candidate in the 11th District. His opponent was nine-term Democratic incumbent Paul Kanjorski. The 11th had long been considered the most Democratic district in Pennsylvania outside of Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Barletta narrowly lost and tried again in 2008, and again lost by a thin margin. In 2010, Barletta vs. Kanjorski matched up for the third time, and this time Barletta came away with a 10 percent victory margin. Lou Barletta is considered a blue-collar sort of guy, whereas the incumbent Senator Bob Casey Jr. comes from political nobility. His father is former Pennsylvania Governor Bob Casey Sr., who served two terms from 1987 to 1995. An extremely popular governor, Casey Sr. won many Republican hearts

by championing gun rights and especially for his stands against abortion. In fact, Planned Parenthood v. Casey was a major Supreme Court case that upheld almost all the prohibitions on abortion that Casey signed into law. Bob Casey Jr. has his father’s name, but not his positions. Though he claims to be a pro-life Democrat, his voting record shows something very different. After a decade in the Senate, Casey has become an increasingly reliable vote in support of abortion rights — scoring as high as 100 percent on NARAL Pro-Choice America’s vote tally in 2016 and 2017. In reality, this Senate race, like other competitive ones throughout the country, will be about Donald Trump. Barletta is unashamedly a Trump supporter, being one of the first to endorse him for the presidency. He was co-chair of Trump’s 2016 Pennsylvania campaign. Like President Trump, Barletta has taken a very strong stand against illegal immigration. This race is Casey’s to lose as he has the tailwind with name recognition and strong financing — whereas the underdog Barletta has a bipartisan appeal with

a competitive spirit and MAGA convictions. U.S. Representative Tom Marino has also been a Trump supporter from the beginning. Running for his fifth term in the newly formed 10th Congressional District in Pennsylvania, Marino is Williamsport born and raised. Passionate about controlling government spending and the opioid crisis, he is solidly conservative. Running against him is Democrat Marc Friedenberg from State College, a teacher, and a self-described cybersecurity law expert. He is a political novice who very narrowly defeated Judy Herschel, a drug and alcohol counselor and also a political novice, in the spring primary. Obviously, the vote for Congress will be a referendum on Tom Marino and also President Trump. The vote for our representatives in Washington is extremely important, as the choice will be to continue the path that President Trump has set the country on or to hit the brakes and go an entirely different one. Both the Senate and Congressional races in our area offer the voters clear choices on which way they want to go.

The Jaded Eye…

A Follow Up Worth Following

T

his story should make your engines rev. My tachometer surely hit the redline, and should give anyone hope in finding an idol from youth that they never got the chance to meet. Several issues ago, I penned a story about Nikki Phillips, my favorite Hurst show car gal when growing up. At age 10 I had a crush on her — she was a ripe 25 at the time and traveling to drag strips and auto shows promoting Hurst speed products and automobiles. I wondered out loud whatever happened to her. Now, I can share with all of you

what she has been up to. Nikki didn’t let me down; she’s a very interesting and hard working person. Read on! Avid reader and friend, Tracy Clary, texted me just a few days after the story. “I found your Hurst girl,” she said. I was quite pessimistic, since no one at the shows I attend knew her whereabouts. Tracy forwarded my story to Nikki via Facebook. Nikki said “it made her day,” and was happy she was being remembered. Not only that, she was going to call me! The next day, I spoke to Nikki O’Neill for about an hour. The conversation spanned from the present back to the heyday

Hurst days. It was both a surprise and honor that a nationally known “living legend” would take time to contact me! Hey, I just had a school boy “crush” on her. We didn’t partake in lucrative business dealings or have her kiss my cheek in a winners circle. Gerry My first question posed Ayers to her was why she left the car show and drag racing scene at her zenith. “I was getting my doctorate degree and became pregnant around that time. It was impossible to continue the racing venues,” she said. Nikki is a sprite 71 years young now, and has several children and grand children. She has been married once, and happily for 45 years to one lucky guy. How did a Miss USA contestant meet her husband to be? “I was on a date with one of his fraternity brothers,” she jokingly said. “And he asks him what his intentions were with me that night. When the guy replied ‘not very honorable,’ well, he took me under his wing and I have been with him since!” Nikki asked where I lived, and when I told her Williamsport, Pa., she said she was very familiar with this area. “Oh sure, I took my sons to wrestling tournaments to that big high school on the hill.” Amazing. She passes through here dozens of times over the years. Some of you probably sat next to her or were in line at

the concession stand chit chatting. And.... where was I? Nikki has resided in Maryland for many years and owns and operates a glass blowing shop. Her hand made items are both ornate and beautiful. The time she spends grinding and polishing and putting them on display defies her age. But, she told me she loves staying busy and active. “Do I get a discount on a custom designed urn from you, I mean you WERE my first crush,” I asked her. Laughing, knowing a dark sense of humor was hiding in me, replied, “You are putting the cart before the horse. Hang in there, good things will prevail.” I took time to view her glass creations on line. Unique and colorful, a true extension of herself. She invited me to come and see them personally, and I extended an invite to see my car collection. My inquiries and enthusiasm still sounded like an adolescent boy talking to a standout college girl. A “10” in both looks and brain power. Wow, was I really talking to the gal in all those magazines I kept? I asked her if she kept her memorabilia from the fabled Hurst days. “All of it,” she told me. “It’s in the basement. I even kept every outfit. Linda Vaughn’s mother was a seamstress and she made all our outfits by hand.” It was Linda Vaughn (the most famous Hurst girl) who talked Nikki into becoming a Hurst mate when they met once at a show. The former Miss Phillips told me she

loved all the racecar drivers, and was especially fond of Grumpy Jenkins. I didn’t ask why, but if memory serves, this drag racer was a real clown. During our conversation, it was evident that Nikki not only loved her children and her profession, but spoke constantly about “working hard to get what you want in life.” “Never give up in your dreams.” It was at this point I had to ask Nikki why she bypassed all the Hurst reunions or current car shows. She was quite flabbergasted to hear that people still want to know how she is doing and what she is doing. I told her I spoke to Linda Vaughn at Chrysler Carlisle. “Gerry, I don’t look like that anymore,” she joked. Seriously, who DOES look like they are in their 20s at age 70? I explained to her that it is the people and personalities at these shows that are special. She was showcased at a royal time in American racing and fast cars. And is still around to tell us about it! She might consider all that “ancient history,” but I consider it a part of a golden era I grew up in. And trust me, I am not alone. With that in mind, I nudged Nikki into considering meeting up with Linda Vaughn next July at the Chrysler Carlisle show. It’s only a few hours from her home, and the guys who followed racing would love seeing her AND Linda waving side by side as they used to back in the day! I think it’s going to happen. I really

hope it does. Not just for Linda and Nikki to “reunite” at a big event, but for legions of fans who thought Nikki faded into oblivion. Believe me, she’s not your average grandmother. She still has racing fuel in her veins! An inspiration for people in retirement age! I asked if she has a copy of the Hurst parts poster with her picture on it. the cool one with red outfit and white go-go boots, a quarter mile wide smile, if I remember correctly. “Yes, hanging up downstairs,” she proudly said. And not going on eBay any time soon. When I told her they were rare as hens teeth, she also was surprised. She promised to look for an extra one for yours truly! By the end of our conversation, I felt I had known Nikki for a long time. She was honest and funny and high spirited. We keep in touch via email lately. She asks of my health, I ask of her glass works and grand kids. Just a few weeks ago I posed a question that all of us had to know. Did she ever own a Hurst Oldsmobile. The type she used to promote and sit in and on during the auto events. “No,” she told me. “But they gave me a bright blue Camaro with a 350 motor in it for a years use after I beat 49 other girls to win the District of Columbia beauty pageant. I got two speeding tickets in one week with it, but the judge threw both of them out.” Who says looks don’t get you anywhere?

Four Tips to Help Reduce Litter and Protect the Oceans

T

he tide of environmental studies showing the harmful effects of litter and mismanaged waste on oceans are seemingly everywhere. According to the Ocean Conservancy, plastic product consumption is predicted to double over the next 10 years. With the health of the oceans closely tied to the health of the environment, marine life and humans, making choices that help reduce ocean pollution is one way to make an impact. In fact, research from the Plastic Free July Foundation shows that more than six in 10 people refuse plastic shopping bags, avoid prepacked fruit and vegetables, pick up litter and avoid buying water in plastic bottles.

“Mismanaged packaging waste is a threat to our oceans and the overall health of our planet,” said Lynn Bragg, president of the Glass Packaging Institute. “We can all make a difference by changing the type of food and beverage packaging we buy, opting for reusable and refillable containers, following local recycling guidelines and helping keep beaches and waterways clean.” These tips from the Glass Packaging Institute are just a few ways to contribute: 1. Think about the packaging you choose. When making a purchase, consider alternatives to plastic like glass or other natural and sustainable packaging. Glass, for example, is

made mostly from sand and recycled glass, is reusable, recyclable and does not harm oceans or marine life. 2. Choose reusable containers. Taking advantage of reusable containers for food and beverages is one way to live a more ecofriendly life. Since only 9 percent of plastic bottles are recycled, according to “National Geographic,” reusable containers can serve as an ideal replacement for bottled water whether at home or on-the-go. Rather than plastic, choose glass or stainless steel, which can hold hot or cold food and beverages, and help protect the contents from any chemicals. 3. Reduce your single-use footprint. Whenever possible, bring reusable bags and containers to the store. Some foods like cereal, pasta and rice can be purchased from bulk bins and placed in a glass or stainless-steel storage container.

To further cut down on plastic waste, consider switching to reusable straws, which are available in glass, stainless steel or bamboo. 4. Recycle better. Learn what you can and can’t recycle in your community. Certain items like disposable cups, greasy pizza boxes, non-recyclable plastic containers (like those for yogurt) and take-out containers can contaminate entire batches of recycling. About 91 percent of plastic is not recycled and can linger in the environment for hundreds of years, contributing to ocean pollution. Glass containers are 100 percent recyclable; steel and aluminum cans and cardboard are also easily recyclable. Find out more about the benefits of choosing and reusing glass packaging to help reduce ocean pollution at upgradetoglass.com. (Family Features & Glass Packaging Institute)

reason, diligent visibility is the cardinal rule of our children’s protection policy. As someone who leads a volunteer organization that works with a lot of children, I can assure you that providing diligent visibility creates a significant amount of extra effort. We take this very seriously — and we know that we have to get it right every time. Providing visibility usually means that we must recruit and train additional volunteers who are able to serve or supervise. We also must anticipate and account for every possible scenario that may be encountered during all kinds of activities, like van trips, youth campouts, all-night events, and even conferences and mission trips that may be hundreds of miles away. We have sometimes removed an event from the planning calendar simply because we knew we couldn’t provide full visibility. Yes, my friends, it’s that important. Church, we’ve got to get this right every time. Far too many people are carrying the emotional, mental, physical and spiritual scars of abuse. Let me assure you, abuse alters the course of a person’s life — and the scars last a lifetime. We can and must do everything within our ability to protect the children God has placed in our care. When I share about diligent visibility, people often ask me, “Isn’t there anyone we can trust?” There’s an important answer to that question — and I will share it with you in my next article.

Ministry Policy Manual. It contains all of the legal directives of PA Act 153 requiring background checks and mandated reporting training. Background checks are good, and they keep convicted offenders from having organizational access to children. But even the most effective background check system will never guard our children from an offender who has never been caught or the firsttime offender. The only completely effective method for protecting children in organizational settings is diligent visibility. And yes, that same visibility also protects the adult worker from suspicion or accusation. As a part of our training, I share with our volunteers and staff what I call “The Top Ten” of how we keep children safe. Here is the first one: Children’s workers diligently seek visibility. No children’s worker should ever be alone with children in a situation where the interaction cannot be fully supervised. Keep doors open, lights on, windows unobstructed. Visibility not only protects children, but it also protects workers from suspicion or false accusation. Stay in the open! Background checks are beneficial, but they cannot protect our children from the first-time offender or the yet-tobe-caught offender. Mandatory training is also beneficial, but nothing provides greater protection to our children and our workers than diligent visibility. For that

he Masten Lumber Mill of the Central Pennsylvania Company, which has been employing about 100 men, did its last bit of sawing last evening at 6 o’clock. The mill will be dismantled as soon as possible. According to the tradition of the lumbermen, the steam whistle at the mill was tied down last evening to mark the closing of the property, and the shrill, wailing cry of escaping steam, telling the tale of desolation and abandonment could be heard re-echoing throughout the countryside, finally growing fainter and fainter and fading out as the steam from the cooling boilers gave out. The mill, which has been operated by the Central Pennsylvania Lumber Company for about 14 years, has operated daily during that stretch of time, at least a single “trick” a day and sometimes double time. It has supplied Wedding Ad lumber for Genetti points inNew Pennsylvania,

New York and the New England states. The closing of the mill, officials stated, was necessitated by the gradual exhaustion of available timber. The plant operated about 15 miles of tramway extending from the mill into Masten, where it connected with the Susquehanna and New York Railroad. The approximately 100 men who were thrown out of employment, at least temporarily by the shut down will be partly taken care of by transfers to Sheffield. Others will be without work it is feared, although the company is attempting to use all the labor possible to the best possible advantage. It is planned, officials said, to dispose of the land by selling it to the state if such disposition can be affected. The mill was operated part time during the fall and early spring months, before it was purchased by the lumber company about 14 years ago. Since that time it has been operating every day. Jack Hoffman, of Masten, was acting general superintendent of WG 1 of1/18/18 10:33 the 2018.pdf plant at the time its shut down.

he paw prints of the Nittany Lions are one of the most distinctive elements of the Penn State logo. It is used by its athletic teams — gaining particular prominence with its football program. But the question has arisen are there four or five toes as part of that distinctive and well-known paw print? Local goldsmith, Rick Mahonski hopefully has that answer. When Mahonski asks fans how many toes are on the Penn State paw print logo, he typically gets two different answers. Some answer with four. They are right! But they are also correct if they answer with five toes. Of course, there’s a good tale behind the question. According to Mahonski, when Penn State and Clemson Universities met on the football field in 1988, the battle was not simply for the title of the Citrus Bowl. A little known, yet entirely true story involves the clash

over the use of the anatomically correct four-toed paw print logo. Both teams were using similar paw logos, and Clemson contacted Penn State, stating they had the legal rights to the use of the four-toed paw. In response, Penn State simply added a fifth toe, moved forward with the new graphic, and the new design that fans are familiar with was adopted. When Mahonski began creating his official Penn State Paw Prints jewelry in 1998, the University directed him to use the five-toe design. The first piece Rick designed was personally given to the heralded PSU football coach, Joe Paterno, and the second to his wife, Sue. Photographs and comments from that day helped kick-off Mahonski’s advertising campaign for the Paw Prints collection. Since that time, thousands of pieces of Penn State Paw Prints jewelry have been sold to players, their parents, and fans throughout the nation and across the world. Mahonski has the exclusive rights

Four toes or five?

Based on the information Mahonski gathered, as well as input from his customer base, he has decided to continue to offer his CLASSIC fivetoe collection, as shown in his Penn State Paw Prints Collection catalog. In addition, every piece offered is now also available with the NEW four-toed design. He believes it is the right combination of Penn State’s glorious history, combined with their new forward-thinking choice. Penn State has the largest alumni members of any university in the country, and there is always a new generation of students, parents, and fans looking for classic and classy ways to show their Penn State pride.

from Penn State to create fine, handcrafted 14-carat jewelry with the University logo. His 100-piece collection, crafted over 20 years, all reflected that five-toed choice. However, this year, the University’s new Director of Licensing and Programs contacted him and shared that little-known story of the logo. She explained that Penn State had decided to return to the four-toed paw in their advertising. Rick personally researched the story and found that not everyone in the Nittany Lion community was excited by the change. There was even a group formed called “Keep Five Alive,” that was focused on keeping the paw in its post-1988 form.

omelessness in the United States is a big issue right now, but the term itself is a little misleading. Homelessness could refer to someone who lives on the streets, of course, but it also could be those who experience financial setbacks that make their housing costs unmanageable. Those who find themselves in that situation generally do not have any choice but to find any port in the storm (usually from friends or family members), which makes more people suffer from a housing problem due to the doubling up.

Owning a home is costly, to be sure, but renters also have it tough these days. Almost half of the renters in the United States pay more than

ferent agencies related to housing support, the Coalition was designed to find a way to coordinate their efforts. In 2008, Rosanne Pelleschi became chairman of the Coalition after retiring from the United Way. Since her work with United Way involved funding various housing initiatives, she was well positioned to lead the Coalition. Her focus for the first few years was continuing the Coalition’s goals of educating the public and public officials on housing needs. It was obvious, however, that something more was needed. A breakthrough happened in 2014 when a Housing Symposium was held at the Genetti Hotel, which was made up of the various social service agencies, as well as landlords and real estate companies to discuss the “needs gap” in housing. It was obvious that there was a great deal of interest on these matters, as over 100

participants took part. This was right around the time that the gas industry was still having a significant impact, and everyone agreed that something had to be done for the working poor who had jobs but just could not meet the costs of housing. Ironically, the gas industry that exacerbated the housing problems also provided much-needed assistance. The Act 13 impact fees, which were signed into law by Governor Corbett in 2012 created funds that could be used specifically for housing, specifically the Pennsylvania Housing Affordable and Rehabilitation and Enhancement Fund (PHARE), which had been established in 2010. The PHARE Act did not allocate any funding, so Act 13 came along just in time. This funding came along through the Lycoming County Planning Department and their deputy director, Kim Wheeler. Kim was

part of that 2014 Housing Symposium and began discussions with the county commissioners on how the county could help. Through PHARE funds and also the Commonwealth’s Department of Community and Economic Development grants, Lycoming County began to make some inroads on needed housing projects such as Memorial Homes, Grove Street Commons, Brodart Neighborhood Improvement Program, and the Muncy Green Senior Housing Development. But it takes more than bricks and mortar to solve the housing challenge, and the Housing Coalition developed some amazingly innovative solutions. These will be discussed in the next issue, so stay tuned to this station — you or someone you know may need some housing help, and the good news is that there is help to be had.

30 percent of their income on rent, and of that number, a quarter pays more than 50 percent of their income on rent. Given that a third of all housing units in Williamsport are rentals, this problem begins to come into focus. Studies have shown for some time that housing has been one of the pressing concerns in Lycoming County, but the right approach on how to address it has been somewhat elusive. Various agencies address homelessness, such as American Rescue Workers, Family Promise, the YWCA/Liberty House, etc. But this problem also touches banks, realtors, veterans, those on probation, and a host of other stakeholders. How do all these moving parts fit together? To provide information and education on these housing challenges, the Lycoming County Housing Coalition was established a number of years ago. The Harvest Festival is a full day of great food, live music, demonstrations, local craft and business vendors, and a Kid’s Zone full of numerous free activities for children. This year a children’s stage has been added to include scheduled activities for children throughout the day. Music, folk dancing, crafts, science toys and Pop Up creative play are scheduled. The Roving Sportsman… Rain, Rain Go Away! By Jon Pries

O

ver the four-day period of September 13-16, 2018, the Southeast Regional Championship — a sporting clays tournament — was projected to host over 700 shooters from across the country. The event, held at the Forest City Gun Club on the outskirts of Savannah, Georgia, actually drew just under 600 of those who had preregistered for the shoot. Thus, more than 100 individuals canceled their trip because hurricane Florence was busy making landfall at Wilmington, North Carolina — less than 270 miles to the north — and was projected to turn in a southerly direction, bringing higher than normal winds and rain, heavy at times, to the area. Most of those brave souls who did attend traveled from all across the country and as far away as California and Washington states. So what does all of this have to do with you — the “average Joe” hunter in Northcentral Pennsylvania? The point is that those who want to win when shooting at a sporting clays tournament will attend and participate regardless of the weather forecasts. Similarly, if you are serious about your hunting and are really focused on putting your tag on a trophy buck, a respectable long-bearded turkey or a Pennsylvania black bear, then rainy weather and blustery conditions should not hold you back. In fact, lousy weather conditions may actually up your odds of success.

First of all, today’s hunters are not as rugged and dedicated as they once were. Years ago, there was a greater need to put venison or other game on the table by those who headed into the woods to secure food for the family. Today, there is an increasing number of hunters who will hold out for “nicer” weather and avoid the soaking rains and gusty winds. With fewer hunters in the woods when the weather gets nasty, the game you pursue may very well be less spooky because they are not being pressured by a greater number of hunters. Secondly, deer, bear, turkeys and all other game cannot just check into a nearby motel to get out of the weather! No matter what the conditions are, wildlife is always out there in the woods, somewhere. You may have to employ different hunting tactics, but there is a good chance that if you brave nasty weather you just may be rewarded with success. Over the years, I have observed that on clear days, deer will generally feed throughout the night, sometimes showing themselves during the early dawning hours of sunrise before they head to their bedding area or when entering the fields during the dwindling moments of daylight, just around sunset. On rainy days, however, deer tend to move into the fields throughout daylight hours and feed longer. They may show up at any time. While turkeys may stay on their roost longer and squirrels and rabbits may tend to hold up during foul weather, deer and bear

their roosts. Throughout the day, pay more attention to feeding areas — food plots, corn or soybean fields. Pay particular attention to areas of red or white oaks, where wildlife will be scouring the ground for acorns. If you are hunting with a buddy, try leapfrogging, where one of you circles around to a spot with good visibility out ahead of the other, and then the second hunter walks slowly, taking lots of time to scan and observe the area ahead as he moves toward the waiting hunter. It is a similar pattern that multiple hunters use in a deer drive but can be very effective with just two people in foul weather conditions. Don’t let the rain or blustery weather hold you back. You may just find that inclement weather presents the perfect conditions to take that “trophy of a lifetime.”

tend to be up and on the move — feeding in the open fields on grasses and clovers or traveling through the woods in search of acorns. Bears are eating continually in an attempt to put on layers of fat for the upcoming winter months. Deer are doing the same, but the bucks are also layering fat so that during the rut they can expend more energy breeding receptive does. Rainy days are not very receptive to sitting in a treestand or a ground blind. Instead, moving slowly through the woods is your best approach. Cover as much ground as possible, but do it slowly. Spend more time scanning the horizon and patches of ground cover and less time moving quickly from one area to another. In the early hours after daybreak, you will be looking for deer in their bedding area or turkeys still on

Another variation that can make a lure more effective is to change depth. Although not designed for surface fishing a floating minnow lure can bring some serious surface action especially on smallmouths and largemouths. Casting the lure and then letting it settle for a bit and then imparting a slight twitch can mimic a dying minnow at the surface making it a great target for bass, pike or muskies. There are significant differences between assisted living facilities (ALF) and nursing homes (NH). Both have varying levels of care, freedom of mobility and skilled personnel. Care in an assisted living facility is paid entirely by the patient. Medicaid does not provide long-term care assistance for ALF charges. Care in a nursing home may be paid by the patient, the patient’s long-term care insurance, or if qualified, by the PA Department of Human Services through Medicaid. There are stringent criteria for Medicaid but after those criteria have been met the cost of care is typically covered for the duration of the patient’s life. Assisted living facilities have contracts for the payment of room and board. In any facility a bed-hold or transfer to a higher level of care may result in charges for a room no longer occupied. It isn’t uncommon for an ALF to bill over a month in advance and charge an entire month’s room and board even if the patient involuntarily left the building by physician’s order prior to the end of the preceding month. When admitting a loved one into any facility read the contract carefully and if you don’t understand it ask us to review it with you prior to signing it. Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ can work with you to protect your loved one’s resources. Call for our free initial consultation.

you’re struggling to get your building skills nailed, Fortnite is frustrating. You’ll see an opponent throw up a bunch of ramps, get above you, and obliterate you in seconds. But you’ll go back to the lobby, and you’ll try again. And again. And again. That’s because it’s a lot of fun, and it’s very entertaining. You can play in groups of ten and take on the entire world. Check out the highlight reels from some of the big-time players on YouTube. That’s what Jensen does when he’s not playing. He used to like Lebron James, but now it’s some middle-aged Fortnite player is his new favorite professional athlete. Say what? The variety of weapons, skins, locations, the building mechanics, and the way the map in Fortnite evolves, all combine to make a platform that’s never the same on different days. Season four just started by dropping a meteor into the middle of the map and Epic Games is doing an incredible job at keeping the community engaged with fresh content. It is highly addictive too. Cheers.

try explaining that to a nine-yearold kid. If you want to look like the Easter Bunny or a leprechaun, there’s going to be money involved. You need to some Vbucks, and that is where these guys are cashing in. Epic is still making an obscene amount of money from Fortnite because for whatever reason everyone wants those dumb skins. Whether it’s buying the Battle Pass for the season or individual items, Epic is printing money. But, you can play for free, and still have a great time. Your character just won’t look as cool. Another reason why it’s so popular with the younger crowd is that Fortnite combines two legendary games. You create extensive battlefields as in Minecraft and have an opportunity to snipe someone like in Call of Duty. The best players can build a ridiculous structure in seconds, then still circle behind an enemy and deliver a well-timed blue pump shot to the head. JENSEN. NOW. YOUR TIMER JUST WENT. very day we are given opportunities to learn from mistakes, accomplishments, and the highs and lows associated with life. As a young athlete attempting to make it on the varsity stage, there will be plenty of those chances to become a better player or person. Sometimes it’s clear for everybody to see —a player fumbling a ball, or committing an error and bounc-

ing right back to overcome the mistakes in the game. Other times, the learning process isn’t as clear or quick to resolve itself. For Williamsport’s Lila Vogelsong one of those moments came early in the season as she let up a goal with less than 15 seconds remaining in the game against Loyalsock. It was just one of those moments that

tempts and recording her second shutout of the season. She could have easily given up or chalked the experience against Loyalsock up as a fluke, but she didn’t. She continued to work and made the adjustments needed against a league opponent familiar with her team. “Shikellamy is always notorious for shooting from anywhere on the field,” McNeill said. “They have some girls that can smack the snot out of the ball and they turn around and take a shot from anywhere.” Six of the eight shot attempts by the Braves came over the most crucial parts of the game and Vogelsong was there to make the stop. The win elevated Williamsport to a single game above .500, but it showed that Vogelsong will continue to grow in her role as the team’s last line of defense. She has put the time in throughout the offseason and should be able to anchor Williamsport’s defense throughout the next two seasons. “I learned to keep my positioning and stay back when I need to,” Vogelsong said. “I made sure I wasn’t out of position when they took those shots and made sure I was ready when they took those shots. I take pride in my team. I know it’s not just me. We work together really well.”

will live on between teams and players as Loyalsock’s Anna Burdett popped a shot attempt up from near midfield to cash in for a 1-0 win. The goal came with less than 15 seconds remaining on the clock and was Brett devastating to the young Crossley keeper and her team. It could have been a season-defining moment for Vogelsong, but she wasn’t going to let a mistake make the early portions of her season a forgettable one. She turned to her coach for help, and he quickly did just that to give her the confidence needed to adjust. “What I told her was that Ben Comfort basically put a scouting report out on her for the entire league, so she had to stay closer to her line,” Williamsport coach J. Scott McNeill said. “People are going to try and shoot from distance on her now, and try to put the ball over the top of her.” That’s exactly what happened when Williamsport welcomed in Shikellamy for a rain-soaked tilt in the middle of the week. The Braves posted eight shots on goal with a good percentage of them coming from outside the 18-yard box. Vogelsong learned from the mistakes early in the season, stopping all eight at-
