Pranks, Positivity and Prosperity

W

hat an absolutely unbelievable time to be alive in the United States of America. I thank God that somehow my family and I ended up in the beautiful and friendly confines of the West Branch Valley. There is no place in the world I would rather live. I still look forward to the Mummers’ Parade marching down the streets of South Williamsport like it did when I was a kid. Only back then, the parade was held after dark. The night of the Mummers’ Parade also was the unofficial beginning of some good oldfashioned tricks/pranks and save the treats for Halloween night. I wonder how many South Side folks snuck down to the fields of Sylvan Dell to gather up just the right amount of ear corn for peeling. Do you remember the sound that made raining down on those plastic corrugated porch roofs of the 70s? My Dad was always leading the charge for a good Halloween prank; he loved perpetrating them on fellow family members. It was like he enlisted my siblings and me into a covert operation like “Mission Impossible.” He would go over the plan, and under cover of darkness, we would execute it. The toughest part was keeping quiet and not laughing your mask off, alerting whoever was being pranked. It was always in good fun, never in a destructive

manner or too difficult to clean up. My favorite lesson was the art of toilet papering a house. My Father had us split up and cover both sides of a property, and he always made sure there was plenty of toilet paper. A few of my Dad’s others favorites were the “For Sale Sign” in the front yard and staging at least one call from a prospective buyer the next morning. The gathering up of “Vote for Me” signs and putting them in the opposition’s yard or those supporting them. Another classic was waiting till our neighbor, who kept his yard perfectly groomed, had every last leaf cleaned up and out on the street. My Father would then have every last leaf put right back from where it was raked up from. I’ll never forget Dennis Moore’s response to this when he lived next door to us. What just plain good old-fashioned fun! Yes, I know what you’re thinking, unless if you’re the guy that had to clean up the leaves or toilet paper. No worries, we usually returned to the scene of the crime. My Dad with a big smile, his unique laugh, baring Mr. Donuts and apple cider. Of course, there was also retaliation targeted at the Webb family house. This was to be expected, and my Dad would laugh just as hard about this. There are some more creative pranks my Father came up with I better just leave for Webb family conversation. As far as those I’ve listed, please don’t try them at home. In

the world of today, who knows the trouble that could follow. Oh by the way — my Father drove us down to Sylvan Dell to pick out just the right corn. What a great Dad. You know I tend to get a little off track, now back to my opening statement. Please do Jim not allow the liberal Webb, Jr. mainstream media, social media, or those just flat-out dwelling in negativity to drag you down. Our Nation is truly blessed, and there is more opportunity out there than ever before. I honestly believe here at home our unemployment rate could be zero. Everywhere I go businesses are looking for workers, in a wide variety of jobs. Our national unemployment rate — 3.7 percent — is the lowest it’s been since 1969. Hourly wage and yearly income are at an all-time high. Without running through all the key economic indicators, which is flat-out boring, the future looks bright. There have never been more educational and vocational opportunities for young folks as in the world of today. If you want to work with your hands, you will find employment immediately. The cyber and technology world of today offers more high-tech choices than could have ever been imagined. I have no worries about the millennials; they’ll figure it out. There’s always some generation-next that’s going to be the downfall of American society — I’ve heard it all before. These folks are going

to take our Nation into the future! I have no doubt. They will provide better leadership than those that have come before them. If you honestly look at almost all aspects of our Country, we’re better than ever before. Please stop listening to what the naysayers are trying to sell you. There will always be some inequality, injustice or form of discrimination the far left wants you to believe. I’ve got news for you; there will always be. There will never be a utopian society where all is perfect. But where we are in the world today is better than it’s ever been. We need to keep moving forward to solve our problems and make it even better. But this whole sky is falling thing from the liberal left is beyond getting old. Just take a look around at what every American has on a daily basis. Where else can you find this in the world? And nobody takes care of those that need a helping hand better than fellow Americans. We truly are a Nation of amazing people from all walks of life. I believe in the American people and that most are working for the good. There will always be bad people that infiltrate every aspect of life. They need to be found out and dealt with by the laws of our land. The encouragement of violence and chaos can never replace compromise and love for our fellow man. Midterm elections have never been more important than those approaching in November. We all need to vote America first and not allow those who want to divide and conquer us to win! God Bless America.

Counting Candy Corn!

A

ttention boys and girls! It is time once again for Webb Weekly’s annual Halloween contest! We are taking this year’s contest back to it’s roots. The very first year we did this we counted Candy Corn, so we are going OG this year. I’m sure you know how this works, but just in case you forgot, let me refresh your memory. Scattered throughout this issue you will find a variety of Candy Corn. All you need to do is count them — easy peasy. Then do the same thing next week — lemon squeezy. Take those two numbers, add them together and then send me your total. Remember, I am looking for the total number of Candy Corn in the October 17th and October 24th editions. I will then take everyone who answered correctly and pick 10 random winners. Winners will receive a bucket full of goodies big enough to give you

several cavities! Seriously, I should be apologizing to local dentists — or maybe asking for a cut! The easiest way to Steph enter the contest Nordstrom to is to email the answer to contest@ webbweekly.com, or you can drop a post card in the snail mail at Webb Weekly, 280 Kane St., Suite 2, South Williamsport, PA 17702. Or, if you are so inclined, you can drop your entry off at our office, we are open Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Entries must be submitted by Oct. 19th around noon or so and only one entry per person. Winners will be listed in the Oct. 31st edition. But I’ll call or email the winners prior to that. Remember the contest is only open to kiddos 12 and under. Previously, each year we alternated donating a dollar to either the SPCA or

LAPS for each entry we received. But this year we have decided to switch it up, and Beckoning Cat Project will be the recipient of the donation. Be sure to get your entries in and help support a great cause. Plus ya know…candy. So. Much. Candy. So look carefully and count them up! I get a little sneaky when I place them, so make sure you check every page closely! So you better swish jellyfish! Get counting and good luck!! A Halloween contest can only mean that fall is here and Halloween is right around the corner! Have you picked your costume yet? We’d love to hear about you and/or your kids’ Halloween costumes, so share it with us on Facebook, or better yet, post some pictures! If I receive enough pictures via Facebook (fb.com/webbweekly) and/ or email (webbnews@webbweekly. com) maybe you’ll see your little one on an upcoming cover! You can even attach the picture to your email entry (contest@webbweekly.com).

73rd South Mummers’ Parade Steps Off This Saturday, October 20 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

n enduring South Williamsport tradition, which has become an institution associated with the borough each fall, steps off at 2 p.m. for the 73rd time this Saturday, October 20, when the South Williamsport Mummers’ Parade takes place. “We are determined to make the day about putting smiles on a lot of little faces this year!” Dori Rankinen, who heads the South Williamsport Mummers’ Parade Organizing Committee, told “Webb Weekly.” Several professional groups: Woodland String Band, Nittany Highland Bagpipe Band, and the North Trinidad Steel Drum Band bring their musical talents to help bring an interesting mix of music to the parade. As usual, though, various area high school bands will also bring their talented array of musicians to help make the parade an enjoyable musical experience. The North Trinidad Steel Band

is new to this year’s parade and will help bring a unique Caribbean sound to the parade. Jeanette Miller of Southside Ink will be doing a live tattoo as the parade processes through the streets. She will finish it and display the finished tattoo at the viewing stand. According, to Rankinen, there are several new entries this year from area businesses. The parade is the easiest and most cost-effective way to advertise your business. Consider putting an ad in next year’s parade booklet. A parade favorite will be in attendance; Spook Haven is offering a brand new scary experience at their location in Lock Haven — who knows what they’ll bring to the parade with them! Missing from this year’s parade, unfortunately, are the Swingin’ Saggin’ Seniors, who are taking a hiatus from this year’s parade; hopefully, they will be back entertaining the crowds with their antics next year! Step off for the parade is at 2 p.m. The parade starts at Cen-

tainment. Additionally, there are costs for things as mundane as porta-potties along the parade route. It takes a lot of hard work and organizing to put on a fun event like the South Williamsport Mummers’ Parade. Rankinen said they are always looking for volunteers willing to serve as members of the organizing committee for the parade. The committee is inviting anyone interested in joining them for planning next year’s parade. They meet at the Riverwalk Building at 7 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month. The parade is recognized by the IRS as a 5013-C, meaning it is non-profit. They are working to build a list of corporate sponsors over the next two years to make the 75th Anniversary Parade an epic one! Be sure to like the South Williamsport Mummers’ Parade Facebook page to see the latest information on the parade. There has been a running thread on a post by the Lycoming Historical group discussing memories of the parade being at night. It has been interesting to see everyone’s favorite remembrance of the parade.

tral Avenue and Market Street, goes west on Central and proceeds down Clark to Southern Avenue and goes east on Southern and ends at Howard Street. The judges’ stand is located across from the CVS plaza where bleachers will be available for spectators. Officially, the parade disbands at Howard St. so there are many optimal viewing spots along the parade route in which to enjoy the afternoon. Rankinen said the Mummers’ Parade has always been a family-friendly event for South Williamsport and the surrounding communities. There is nothing more exciting than to hear neighbors planning cookouts and gatherings for friends and family along the parade route. Music from the local high school bands and cheers from the various cheerleader squads mingle with the occasional fire truck siren as the afternoon progresses. She said it takes money to put on a parade of this magnitude, so organizers are constantly fundraising throughout the year. Rankinen said they pay each high school band $500 to cover travel expenses and even more for the special out-of-the-area musical enter-

For Hail to the Chief By Scott N. Lowery

T

housands of eager on-lookers will line the streets of South Williamsport this Saturday to take in the sights, sounds and treats provided by the 73rd annual South Williamsport Mummers’ Parade. For young and old alike this community tradition is both anticipated and appreciated. For retiring South Williamsport Borough Police Chief Robert ‘Bob’ Hetner, the

parade has been a part of his DNA since his high school days. Hetner is a product of the South Williamsport school system and taught at the high school for nine years before serving 30 years as a teacher in the East Lycoming School District that included duties as a school police officer. A part-time member of the South Williamsport police force since 1981, he has served as the Borough’s police chief since 2012. He will officially be retiring from that post on October 31. Leading up to the Mummers’ Parade,

and his anticipated retirement Hetner took the time to share his thoughts about the longstanding parade with Webb Weekly. “I started involvement with the Mummers’ Parade back when I was in high school. Back then the high school classes at South Williamsport entered class floats in the parade. It was very competitive between the classes to see which class could win first prize. The whole month of October was spent with class members working on their parade float entry. I remember one year I was the witch doctor on our class float and

danced around in front of the judge’s stand. “At that time the Mummers’ Parade was held at nighttime, and it had a different atmosphere about it. People really enjoyed that, and many people have often said they’d like to go back and see the parade held at night again because it did have that special flavor to it. There are arguments to be had for considering that again, but there are also the safety issues that are involved. “For many years I’ve been involved with the Mummers’ folks as a police officer helping to coordinate activities. don’t like to see traditions die, so I also hope this parade will continue and am thankful there have been a nucleus of people that have been keeping that tradition alive. Many people have certainly enjoyed it and look forward to this parade every year. “Every community needs to have things that they can identify with and are unique to their own community. People in this area have grown up with this parade, and like other traditions that exist, you see people come back on a regular basis to spend time with their families and set up their viewing spot along the parade route. Just the opportunity to get together and to spend some family time, which is something that we know has been lost in many respects. That is why traditions are important. It gives us more time for people to be together. Hopefully, as kids see this parade, they can be motivated to keep these traditions alive as they become adults themselves. “When I was contemplating retirement, that was one of those things I considered. You would kind of like to

end of a high note. It’s always been fun handing out candy to the kids, and I’ll be honest with you, I eat my share of the candy. Halloween is a good followup to the Mummers’ Parade, and I did want to finish up my last year by seeing some of these things that have been important special events to South Williamsport. I did want to finish up with one more Little League World Series, 911 motorcycle event that comes through the Borough, the Mummers’ Parade and Halloween night festivities.” As for the future, Hetner is looking forward to a much slower pace. “I’m just going to take a little time and sit back and relax. There is a lot of stress in dealing with the issues involved in police work. It will be good just to relax, unwind, and take some time and see what it feels like to not have the phone ring at all hours of the night and have to deal with a particular issue that has developed. “I have always considered it an honor to wear the badge and have appreciated the trust that people have placed in me throughout my career. That trust has always meant a lot to me.”

OCTOBER IS NATIONAL PHYSICAL THERAPY MONTH!

While sitting in class my last year of physical therapy school, I heard a little voice telling me we were being groomed for private practice. As I gained experience in various settings (orthopedics, work related injuries, sports injuries, wound care, home health, etc.) I felt the need to expand and branch out. I managed a satellite center for The Williamsport Hospital which gave me a taste of private practice - what a thrill!! I then became Chief Physical Therapist at a local hospital for a yearthe frustrations grew. Finally, my wife Patti and I answered that little voice and investigated the possibilities of opening a private practice. After months of prayer and discussion with family, friends, and business people, we took a huge leap of faith - literally! We opened Lycoming Physical Therapy in June of 1993.

LYCOMING PHYSICAL THERAPY The right choice for personal care and exceptional results.

Since that time, we have been tremendously blessed with a dynamic, friendly staff that takes a genuine interest in our most valued asset - our patients. We work hard to provide the best physical therapy care possible. Our staff often researches new techniques and skills to complement the annual continuing education courses we attend. Communication also plays a critical role in your care - communication with physicians, employers, coaches, etc. occurs regularly. This keeps all parties informed and allows proper efficient treatment to occur. We also strive to keep abreast of insurance regulations and trends - another often overlooked portion of your care.

What do we stand for? Quality physical therapy care based on the latest research given in a friendly atmosphere centering our care on you, the patient. I consider our staff the finest in the county and a part of our extended family. If you need anything, please do not hesitate to contact myself or our office at 570-368-8389. I thank you for your interest in our practice. You and your needs are important to us. God Bless Rob Burger PT, DPT President/Owner

a word of advice: if the best trapper in the county suggests a deal like that, don’t take it. You can’t imagine how many nights I spent in his fur shed, skinning and fleshing coon and possum until well past midnight. So you can understand my shock at seeing JD, hair neatly cut and combed, clean shaven, wearing a suit and tie and sitting in church with his family on September 11, 1988. And all because Edgar Whisenant had declared that Jesus was coming back. JD wanted to be ready. Guess what? Jesus didn’t come back on September 11, 1988. And JD didn’t come back either. That was the one, and only time I saw JD in Church. Millions of people were fooled. Why? Because they didn’t know the truth about the return of Jesus Christ. Whisenant pulled the wool over their eyes and made a lot of money in the process. Sadly, he also discouraged the meager faith of a lot of people. Many of them never came back. Just a few years ago, a self-proclaimed prophet along with a widely known televangelist predicted that the return of Christ was imminent because of a series of lunar eclipse events called blood moons. Those guys sold a lot of books too — and left a lot of disillusioned people in their wake. It doesn’t have to be this way. Jesus warned us about false prophets and false messiahs in Matthew 24. He also gave us some rather clear teaching to protect us from scammers. Do yourself a favor and read Matthew 24. Until you

do, here’s a quick summary of what you need to know about the imminent return of Jesus Christ: • Jesus is coming again. • No one knows the day or the hour. • It will be a long time. • Until He returns, we are to remain faithful and obedient. • Doing so will require great discipline. Frankly, that’s all we need to know. There are a lot of prophets and teachers out there declaring all kinds of things about the return of Christ and His millennial reign. It’s all very interesting and filled with Scriptural interpretation, astronomy, and mathematics. But be careful. It can be easy to get so caught up in it that you forget to remain faithful and obedient to His mission. On the day that Jesus ascended into heaven, his followers were intently looking into the sky when two angels appeared and asked them, “Why do you stand here looking into the sky?” Those early believers had a job to do, and the angels wanted them to know they had no time to waste gazing into the sky while waiting for Jesus to return. The same is true for us. Jesus gave us the mission of reconciliation. In doing so, He placed the hope of humanity in our hands. Instead of staring into the sky and postulating about His return, we should be spending our days accomplishing His mission. He is counting on us to git’er done. If we’re doing so when He returns, we’ll be just fine. And yes, it could be today.

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

How to Be a Better Morning Person

S

leeping is great! I love to sleep, but my 3-year-old is not a fan — getting up bright and early every day at 6 a.m., sometimes earlier. Occasionally, she will “sleep in” until about 6:45, and there was one Saturday morning she slept until 7:15. My husband and I still talk about it. We also have a 5-month old who wakes up around 4 a.m. each morning for a quick snack before going back to sleep. So, whether I want to be or not, I am a morning person. However, I’m not great at it, and I want to be better. Who doesn’t want to wake up feeling energized and excited for the day? If you want to be

a better morning person, it starts with good sleep. The first and hardest step to being a good morning person is NOT hitting the snooze button. I know, it’s so rough, but when the alarm rings, it’s best to do the impossible and get up right away. Once you get over that initial hurdle of getting out of bed, you’ve committed to being awake, as opposed to having those backand-forth negotiations of eking out a few more minutes of sleep. Next, don’t look at the clock when you wake up in the middle of the night. Instead, get comfortable and close your eyes.

Checking the time can be just enough of a stimulus to wake up your brain, making it harder to fall back asleep. Try Bernadette not to think Ulsamer about the time, or how little is left to get in some shut-eye. Whenever I see how late or early it is at night, I immediately start thinking of all the things I need to accomplish in the coming day, and my mind starts churning.

A working mind is not conducive to sleep. So, stop thoughts in their tracks by ignoring the clock, especially if you wake up multiple times throughout the night. Leave the curtains open. Waking up with sunlight can be quite invigorating. If you can get that natural light into your room, it’ll help you innately wakeup and feel less groggy. Before bed crack the blinds, or leave the curtains partially open — you don’t want to compromise your privacy — to let the natural light of dawn organically help you wake up. If your bedroom is on the west side of your house, consider a Wake-Up Light Alarm Clock that simulates sunlight to help roust you out of bed.

Shut down social media and apps. Taking your phone or Fitbit to bed handicaps you both in getting to sleep and how you feel about the sleep, you’re not getting. Checking email and social media before bed do not help your brain to relax. On the flip side, rushing to check your sleep data first thing in the morning, depending on the results, can be frustrating and set you up for failure the next night. Keep to a bedtime even on the weekends. Staying up late on Friday or Saturday disrupts your sleep pattern, making Monday mornings harder than they need to be. Sure, it’s fun to blow off some steam after a hard work week by spending time with friends or binge-watching your favorite show, but just because you can push your bedtime past midnight, doesn’t mean you should. To get a good night’s sleep, you need a consistent sleep schedule. Another weekend barrier to good sleep is too much alcohol. A glass or two of wine won’t mess up your sleep, but overindulging does not a good morning person make. Not only can alcohol give you a hangover, but it can also cause you to wake up throughout the night, neither of which are recipes for a refreshed morning. Another thing you can do to be a better morning person is exercise. A workout might be the last thing on your mind when you’re feeling exhausted, but, if you can, you should get some exercise.

Waking up and putting on your running shoes, is a good trick for getting yourself up and going in the mornings. But any activity during the day will help you have more energy overall. However, late night runs can be counterproductive to good sleep. Your body needs time in the later evenings to relax and unwind. Speaking of unwinding, you don’t want to be working or doing projects past a certain point in the evening. Pick a time when you stop doing and starting relaxing as part of your bedtime routine. Everyone is different, some may need just 15 minutes, while others a full hour. Whatever works best for your internal clock, create a bedtime ritual that allows you to shut down not only your mind but also your body, for a fuller and deeper sleep. Lastly, if you’ve tried all these tips and tricks and you’re still not getting good sleep, you may need to see a specialist. Conditions like sleep apnea affect nearly 22 million Americans. While you may not have a sleep disorder, it’s never a bad idea to get a checkup for your overall health if it’s been awhile. Whether or not you are naturally a morning person, you can train yourself to get better sleep, which should make you less of a grouch in the a.m. If you’re in the same boat as me with young children, try to get to bed as early as you can. But always prep and set the time for the coffee before bed, no matter how late. You’ll be grateful for it once six o’clock rolls around.

new service provided by the James V. Brown County Library enables area residents to have access to virtually every major library in the state, Robert Machinski, director of the library announced last week. This unique service is made possible through the use of a recently installed teletype machine which will speed up the process of locating library materials. The service is part of a new state program designed to assist library patrons in locating books not readily available in their particular area. To implement the program, the state library at Harrisburg, in accordance with the Pennsylvania Library Code, has established various district centers, one of which is the Brown library. As a district center, the Brown Library serves Lycoming, Clinton, and Tioga Counties. The service area will expanded January 1 to include Potter, Bradford,

Memorial Service Monday,

Columbia, Montour, Union, Northumberland and Snyder. When a resident in a service area experiences difficulty in locating a book, the Brown Library—using a teletype machine—will request assistance form the Union Catalog in Philadelphia, which has a huge card catalog listing books in all the major libraries in the state. Union Catalog personnel then determine the location of the library that has the book, and they forward this information to the Brown Library. Then the local library again using the teletype machine—requests that the book be sent here. Mr. Machinski points out that the new service may be used to not only locate books but also phonograph records, films and other library materials. In addition to the teletype service the James V. Brown Library in its capacity as a district center, will provide advisory and field services to smaller libraries. Mr. Machinski said two field workers are expected to be hired to assist the smaller libraries in the service area.

few more responsibilities like presiding over council meetings and “actively promoting economic development.” In essence, the ‘mayor’ in both forms does not have any real authority beyond the other council members. “So, what is the biggest difference between the two proposals?” For one thing, their submitted reports were quite different. The reason is that the Home Rule plan is quite comprehensive, essentially a new constitution for city government. The Council-Manager proposal appears to be attempting to keeping the status quo as much as possible, with the exception of eliminating the current office of mayor and putting all those areas of responsibility under the su-

By Larry Stout uickly reviewing the issue on the November ballot for Williamsport voters, two questions will be posed relating to the future of the city’s government. One is termed the “Optional Third-Class City Charter Question,” which for this series has been termed the “Council-Manager” option, and the other is termed the “Home Rule Question.” In the last edition of this series, it was noted that the Council-Manager option has some similarity to the Home Rule option. That being said, the differences are miles apart. “You stated that there is no mayor in these two options, but the Home Rule Charter proposes a mayor. Is that not true?” In my previous article, I was referring to the office of mayor in its present state. The ‘mayor’ in both forms is elected among the council members, although in the Home Rule Charter, the ‘mayor’ has a

pervision of city council. “What are the advantages of the Home Rule Charter form of government over the present system?” The final report cites eleven advantages, however, these do appear somewhat subjective. For example, the report states that this form is more flexible for the changing needs of the city as well as flexibility in changes to the existing tax structure. The study commission felt Home Rule was the best option for William-

sport as it would allow for more transparency and accountability, and would reduce the appearance of conflicts of interest. “What are some disadvantages of the Home Rule Charter form of government over the present system?” Obviously, the report did not cite any disadvantages, but as noted above, it is possible to question whether some of the advantages cited are truly advantages. For example, the commission noted that there would be operational cost

savings, but this is rather suspect given that there is an additional position proposed, that of city manager, which for a third-class city will be a major (and undoubtedly expensive) position to fill. The other proposed bonuses such as the claim for greater transparency is somewhat cloudy given that there are less checks and balances in this system than in the present system. “This is all so confusing - please help me! What does all this come down to?” There is a preliminary question that must be asked by the voters of Williamsport. Do I want to eliminate the

office of mayor? By so doing, do I want to consolidate all government responsibilities of the city into one council? If the answer to those two question is “no,” then a voter should vote “no” on both ballot questions. If it seems that the office of mayor should be eliminated, then either of the two options will accomplish that. Next week, this column will summarize the issues facing the voters in Williamsport on the ballot issue of government restructuring and its possible consequences.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “A Healing Justice” by Kristin Von Kreisler c.2018, Kensington Books $15.95 / $17.95 Canada 256 pages

our pup is a pretty respectable watch dog. If anyone merely considers walking by your house, it doesn’t go unnoticed. And if someone

actually dares knock on your door, well, the ensuing noise pains your ears. Yes, your doggo is protector of hearth and home and, in the new book “A Healing Justice” by Kristin Von Kreisler, he may be protector of the heart. It happened so fast that Andrea Brady barely had time to think. There she was, just home after an overtime shift with the San Julian, Washington, Police Department and ready for some sofa-time with her

K9 partner and best bud, Justice, when Justice ran into the woods behind their house. One minute, he was snarling, then he’d been stabbed and was shrieking in pain and a man with a knife was racing toward Andie, who had seconds to react. Pulling her weapon, she shot the man dead, but the “man” was a mere boy – Christopher, a teenager who lived just down the lane. Tom Wolski probably should’ve excused himself. He knew that, the minute he was asked to run the investigation into the

Brady case. He also knew that doing so would be a great way for him to set himself apart within the Nisqually County Sheriff ’s Department. Determining what happened would show Top Brass that Tom was ready for bigger things and better money. The problem was that, ever since a disastrous blind date that never actually happened, Tom didn’t think much of Officer Andrea Brady. He didn’t think much of the dead boy’s parents, either. According to them, Christopher was a good kid

BOOKWORM who never gave them a minutes’ trouble. Maybe, they insinuated, Andrea seduced their son and shot him in a lovers’ quarrel. Tom strongly doubted all that, but clues to why Andrea shot Christopher weren’t adding up. In the meantime, Andrea struggled: nightmares colored her sleep and flashbacks lit her days. Her dog was on the mend, but she was not. How could she even think of doing her job anymore? How could she rid herself of the cloud of guilt she felt? Ripped from the headlines and twisted into a bit of romantic mystery with a dog, “A Healing Justice” is a delightful novel, the kind that you can share with pretty much anyone who loves a tale on the lighter side. Indeed, the action in this book is tame enough for anyone who hates needless violence, and it doesn’t linger in blood and guts. The character cast is short and sweet. The language isn’t even offensive; though there are a tiny handful of rough words, they fit, and aren’t gratuitously placed. Reading this book, if you will, is like

wearing your favorite sweatshirt at the end of the summer: comfortable, warm, pleasantly familiar, and not at all complicated. Best of all: a dog. For lovers of novels with a heartpound or two, romance fans, and those who read about pooches, “A Healing Justice” should be on your bookshelf. It’s a book you’ll love. Just watch.

The Hillside Senior Living Community is the premier senior living community in the area…let us show you why… Call 570-322-4436 for a complimentary meal and a tour!

There are many thanks to be passed on to many people this week. Some of you either sent cards or dropped them off at the Webb headquarters on Kane Street in South Williamsport after the last story on cancer. Several people offered garage space for my vehicles (children) over the winter. And Terri DeSanto called and wanted me to have some of her minestrone! Yum! Yes, I would love it, Terri. But the last digit of your phone number got cut off during your message on my answering machine! Thus, I didn’t dismiss your wish. I merely couldn’t decipher your number! So, call me back, and give me that number slowly! And later on, maybe the recipe!

By the time you read this, many of my fellow car enthusiasts will have conquered and returned from the Hershey AACA fall meet. I say “conquer” because it requires almost 20 miles of walking if you want to see and do it all. It devours your time and your money, but as they say, “a bad day at Hershey is better than a good day at work.” For me, it’s swap meet nirvana! For most, the swap meet season ends there, but I still have Kempton and Riegelsville and the York toy show. Thus, I keep going till November. Those first two shows feature beautiful scenery (not just the cars) and fall foliage. Perfect way to cap off the picking year! You hunt deer; I

hunt automotive memorabilia. After weeks of having a small feral cat meet me in the morning for breakfast and at night for a snack, he’s gone for now. Kind of like Art was at the car shows I attended. Dagger, as I called him, became trustworthy enough to eat out of my hand, and I looked forward to seeing him when I came home. He ate well and never talked back! Always gracious. I did see a larger cat trying to impose himself on Dagger, and his food bowl, several times and chased him away. Dagger also slept on some of my porch chairs overnight. In the morning, I often saw his tiny ears and tail shiver as he tried to get warm. “Beefing him up,” was always

story I wrote about him, and he is eager to have a copy! We shook hands and hugged as if he just came home from a long trip. He took out his cell phone and showed me pictures of model cars he has built and put away for display in cases. And of a woman, he’d “marry in a heartbeat,” but was taken. “All the good ones are long gone,” he told me. Finally, though, I have a last name, an address and phone number to stay in touch with him. Several thousand people there on opening day, and I was lucky enough to spot him! My brother took a picture of us together at the vendor’s booth. Our blue shirts almost matched! Another memory made and now tucked away!

part of my agenda and he is sorely missed. Hope the little guy returns sometime! Kudos to the two young girls I often see in Montoursville delivering (heaving onto porches) the local daily paper after school each day. We tend to think of today’s youth as lazy and fueled by cell phones, but these two must be real gogetters. Hope you tip them well when the weather gets cold! And girls, aim well. No one likes digging a paper out of the shrubs! I know because I used to deliver that paper too! The Cleveland Browns and Montgomery Red Raiders football

teams win in the same week! This hasn’t happened since Plymouths, Pontiacs, and Oldsmobiles were being sold at your local dealership! Congrats to both of them! Underdogs have to come through sometimes. In the summer, you see many kids setting up lemonade stands on hot, humid days. So why don’t I see those same kids (entrepreneurs) offering warm cider or hot chocolate on cold days? It may be a big hit. Then again, school DOES get in the way, doesn’t it? The shed organizing and cleaning are moving entirely too slowly. Mainly

Speaking of funds, a local bank decided one afternoon they didn’t know me (after dozens of transactions at their branch office). They wanted ID from me, which I didn’t have, to prove I was who I was. But my friends, I wasn’t trying to take money out, but rather to put cold, hard cash INTO my account. So, we all know of cases involving identity theft and security breach. This is one of the most frequent questions we are asked. Your most-valuable resource may be your home. And it typically carries an emotional attachment greater than its dollar value. When contemplating how to pay for nursing home costs, the resource we most want to protect is our home. Under current PA Department of Human Services guidelines, a home is protected while the patient and spouse are alive. After their deaths, the Commonwealth will likely file a claim that could force a sale of the home. You could gift your home to your children. This could be a good plan. Or a disaster. The factors to consider include timing and the age of the parties making and receiving the gift; the life-styles and circumstances of the parties and their spouses; the lookback period for uncompensated transfers; and the likelihood of an Estate Recovery Claim. Every possibility should be thoroughly examined, but the stakes are especially high when gifting a home. If, after consulting an experienced elder law attorney, the parent decides to transfer the home there are several ways to make the transfer. The options include a complete transfer, a life estate deed, a joint-tenants with right of survivorship deed, and a deed into an irrevocable trust. Be especially cautious about transferring a home into a revocable trust because that transfer makes the home no longer protected for Medicaid planning purposes. Each option must be thoroughly considered. Some are better than others and none are made to fit every circumstance. Timing is important and it’s possible that transferring the home is not appropriate but it should be considered as part of a comprehensive long-term nursing home care plan. Greevy and Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your home and resources for future generations - for a reasonable fee.

because I am still playing catch up with the lawn that still resembles a swamp. My other problem arises from this — I set aside boxes to discard things I swear I won’t ever use or read again, but by the time it’s full, I start rethinking. I might use it again. So it goes right back to where it was. This is destructive behavior. It would be like you packing everyone in the family car, getting halfway to a planned destination, then turning around and coming home because you don’t want to put more miles on the car or put in more gas. What you set out to do is now an afterthought. Might seek therapy after I put everything back the

account when you’re not looking? All I have to say is, if that’s the case, you can have full access to my savings account at any time. Just keep stuffing it in, and I will be solely responsible for taking any out! Needless to say, bank officials got an ear load of G before I left. Twelve miles away, at another branch, they all “knew” me and required no ID. Maybe shirt and shoes, but no driver license or birth certificate to get my paws on my hard earned funds! So let’s do a recap. My buddy Art is still alive and kicking. Lycoming County proves as generous as ever to me. Terri

Shed cleaning is stalled out, and a bank doesn’t tell me “substantial penalty for early withdrawal,” but rather, “who are you?” If variety is the spice of life, you’ve just overdosed on lots more than cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.

Elsewhere, such as in Europe, dual convex mirrors are included on vehicles. Many automotive companies support having two convex mirrors on the sides of cars to eliminate blind spots, as well as reduce the driver’s need to twist his head to the left when turning or changing lanes. However, flat mirrors have been required to avoid distortion and give drivers the most accurate assessment of traffic to their left for changing lanes, called “unit magnification.” This may soon change, though. According to a 2013 statement from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “The agency intends to reevaluate existing side-mirror requirements (FMVSS No. 111) to determine whether convex mirrors should be harmonized with European requirements.” Currently, drivers can modify their driver’s-side mirrors to include a convex mirror addon, as long as the mirrors also have the required flat portion.

he disclaimer “Objects in mirror are closer than they appear” is featured on passenger-side mirrors of vehicles manufactured in the United States, Canada, India, Korea, and Australia. These mirrors are convex, which means they distort the size of objects viewed in the mirror, and as such, distorts the perception of how close or far away objects are from the driver’s car. However, this distortion allows for the reflection of a wider field of view on the side of the vehicle to help eliminate blind spots. In the United States and Canada, driver’s side mirrors are flat or “planar.” Dual convex mirrors are not currently the norm on vehicles manufactured in North America based on requirements implemented by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111 and the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 111.

F

or many traveling enthusiasts, few things are more enticing than the open road. Road trips have long been popular, and that popularity appears to be on the rise. According to a report from MMGY Global, a travel and hospitality marketing firm, road

trips represented 39 percent of vacations taken by United States travelers in 2016. Road trips also remain popular in Canada, where vast, rugged terrain makes for idyllic trips. Before embarking on road trips, motorists would be wise to inspect their vehicles to ensure their getaways are not

derailed by car troubles. • Brake fluid: Squeaky brakes are not the only potential indicator of brake problems. Brake fluid, which should always be topped off before beginning a road trip, also might shed light on potentially serious problems. According to the National Motorists Association, brake fluid looks honey-like and translucent when fresh. A puddle beneath a vehicle that is clear to brown and slick indicates a brake fluid leak, which can

ultimately lead to a complete failure of the brakes. The NMA recommends brake fluid be changed at least once every three to four years. • Transmission fluid: When fresh, transmission fluid is red, darkening over time. However, transmission fluid should never appear brown or black, which indicates potential internal damage to the transmission. To determine if there are any issues with the

• Windshield washer fluid: The unknown of the open road is part of what makes it so appealing. While many road trippers plan their trips during the summer and fall when the weather tends to be both pleasant and predictable, there’s no guarantee inclement weather won’t rear its ugly head. Filling the windshield washer fluid reservoir before embarking on a trip ensures drivers’ visibility won’t be adversely affected by unforeseen issues that can soil windshields. Checking fluids before embarking on a road trip can help drivers avoid breakdowns and ensure a safe, fun trip.

transmission fluid, the NMA recommends drivers wipe a cool dipstick between their thumb and index finger. If even the slightest bit of grit is felt when wiping the dipstick, the transmission is likely in need of work. • Oil: Drivers should change their vehicles’ oil before embarking on road trips, especially if such trips will be lengthy. The NMA notes that fresh oil is light to dark amber and translucent, and that is how oil typically looks immediately after an oil change. Oil darkens over time, and that is natural (black oil indicates it’s time for an oil change). However, oil that appears cloudy or milky indicates that coolant is getting into the oil, perhaps due to gasket problems. Drivers who are not getting their vehicles’ oil changed before a road trip should at least check their oil before leaving to inspect the color of the oil and ensure the vehicle has enough oil.

Faulty, worn brake lines, antilock brake system malfunctions and worn brake pads and discs are some potential brake problems. It is important that motorists learn to recognize the first symptoms of brake trouble so they can address issues before they put drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident or injury. • Unusual noises: Screeching, grinding, rubbing, and high-pitched sounds are common indicators that brake pads, rotors

Each of these issues require immediate attention. • Vibrations: Certain vibrations may indicate brake issues. Rotors can become warped from metal-on-metal rubbing, potentially leading to a failure of the vehicle to brake properly. Vibrations also may indicate tires are misaligned. and other parts of the braking system need attention. Worn pads can cause damage to other vehicle parts, resulting in more expensive repairs if they’re not addressed promptly. • Pulling: If the car pulls to one side when applying the brakes, this may indicate brake pad linings are wearing down unevenly. A brake adjustment may be necessary. Pulling also may be indicative of an object or debris caught in the brake fluid. • Less responsive: If when pressing on the brake pedal the brakes just do not seem to be as effective as they once were, or it is necessary to press the pedal harder for the brakes to engage, there may be a brake fluid leak or an air leak. A shining example of excellent training was offered on Wednesday, October 10th at the Genetti Hotel in Williamsport by the Pennsylvania One-Call System, Inc (PA One-Call, for short). Their motto is “know what’s below, dial 8-1-1 before you dig.” This is part of the national 8-1-1 system that is designed to prevent any possible damage to the “underground industry.” This “underground industry” is incredibly vast given that below the ground are pipes and wires for water, sewage, gas, oil, steam,

The largest of the municipal training organizations is PSATS, the Pennsylvania State Association of Township Supervisors, which like the name states, is the primary focus for training programs for township supervisors. Since excavation does not just include corporations, but also local municipalities, and for that matter, even a homeowner digging out a ditch, this should concern us all. To that end, the Pennsylvania One-Call System has a very helpful website, PA1Call. org, and also utilizes nine liaison personnel who conduct training seminars throughout the state. The one who conducted the training in Williamsport was Mark Lipka, who represents the north-central part of

He gave each participant a personalized interactive device that through periodic quizzes cleverly measured whether the trainees were comprehending the material. His manner was so smooth; it made the two hours of training fly by. The highest compliment that could be paid to a professional is that they made it look easy. Mark Lipka is definitely a professional trainer. There was not a question that he did not answer simply and directly. He kept on the schedule, and yet never appeared rushed. He took eight words, “know what’s below, dial 8-1-1 before you dig,” and made them come alive.

The Roving Sportsman… Do It Yourself Butchering and Processing

MULCH

N

ow that a successful hunt has come to an end and there is venison hanging on the meat pole let’s take a look at doing your own butchering and processing. Hopefully, you were able to keep the meat clean and cool after making that well-placed shot, and the meat has been able to hang and age a bit as long as the temperature was cool enough. Those are the first steps in ensuring really tasty venison for the table. How you decide to butcher the deer and prepare the various cuts will also help determine just how tender and well received the meat will be to all those who will partake of your venison meals. Let’s start with the butchering. Butchering your own deer is not a difficult process, and it is rather rewarding to know that you have done it yourself. Once the deer has been skinned, simply separate the carcass by first removing the two front shoulders, then the two hind quarters from the remaining spine from tail to neck. The most tender meat on the animal is that which lies along the spine — the backstraps and the inner tenderloins. The backstraps lie on either side of the spine and start just above the hips and continue up past the shoulders and into the neck. Most folks trim the backstrap off at the shoulder, but looking closely you can see that the same

muscle group runs up into the neck and this meat is just as tender as that which stops at the shoulder. A backstrap can be cut into 1 to 1 ¼ inch thick pieces (cross grain) and used as individual servings, or cut into lengths six to ten inches (depending on the number of people to serve). To maximize the flavor of this tender cut, it should be cooked over a grill or, preferably, over an open wood fire. Avoid overcooking any venison, as it will tend to make the meat dry and tough. Ideally, cook venison to medium or medium rare. Inside the ribcage and just forward of the hind legs are the two inner tenderloins — sometimes called the “fish” by area hunters — don’t ask me why that is just what some folks call them! On a mature deer, they are about a foot long and about 1 to 2 inches in diameter. Don’t overlook this pair of muscles, as they are extremely tender. Lobes of meat or muscle groups in the hindquarters or “hams” can easily be separated and saved as roasts, sliced into steaks or sliced thinly for sandwich meat. “Dried venison,” a version of “dried beef ” can be made from meat found in the hindquarters. Shoulder and front leg meat generally can best be used either in making venison burger or cubed for canning. The neck meat is great for roasts, or can also be used for burger or for canning. Once the major muscle groups have been

over rice or noodles, in soups or stews, or merely as a snack right out of a cold jar of the meat kept in the refrigerator! It is even so tender that it can be spread onto bread, making a delicious and healthy sandwich. To can venison, merely cut the meat into cubes about one-inch square. Trim away any fat or connective tissues. Fill a quart or pint-canning jar to about ¾ of an inch from the top and do not add water — the meat will make its own juice during the canning process. The preferred utensil for the canning is a pressure cooker. There is much reward and a good feeling of accomplishment when you go through the process of doing your own butchering and processing. I hope you will try it and I am sure you will enjoy the results.

removed for steaks or roasts, take time to go back over the entire carcass and recover any remaining scraps of meat for use in making burger meat or for use in canning. Using venison meat to make venison burger is one of the best ways to stretch the meat for future use as it can be used in so many ways. Burgers on the grill or over an open wood fire, casseroles, chili, venison meatballs with spaghetti, or in a meatloaf are several popular ways to use venison burger. Several times I have mentioned canning venison and suggest that it is not a difficult way to preserve the meat for future use and ends up being ideal for many uses. Once canned, the meat is extremely tender and can be used as in a “beef stroganoff ” served

The Barstool Specialists

The changes will not be instituted until next year so that they are in effect for the beginning of the new season. The archery crowd will most notice the changes; some may opt not to wear any orange. Others may feel safer walking through the woods with an orange hat while moving with full camouflage to their treestand while fall turkey hunting or one of the special gun deer seasons is also underway. The most important thing is that hunters must be very safety conscious; don’t shoot at a target until you have positively identified what it is and that’s going to be especially important with the upcoming changes.

where you are in the state or what season or what time of the year it is. Hunters are required to wear 250 square inches of orange on the head, back and chest combined during the rifle deer, bear and elk seasons, and during all small game seasons. Also, woodchuck hunters are required to wear a fluorescent orange hat while hunting. Under the new regulations, there would be no additional orange requirements other than those just mentioned. For example, archery hunters would no longer be required to wear an orange hat while moving if a gun season is in during the archery season.

happy in life when they hop out of bed every morning. I’ve hopped out of bed for 32 years of teaching and now in my 44th year of coaching looking forward to the task at hand and the people I work with.” Whether in the classroom or on the football field, Wiser has taken those early lessons learned from his parents, Girardi, Byham, and others to assist those facing life’s difficulties and to challenge young people to escape their comfort zone along their road to adulthood. “My parents instilled in me the importance of giving back to others. I can remember as a kid; we lived about a block away from the railroad. Every morning my mom would feed individuals, then referred to as ‘hobos,’ with hot coffee and donuts. At first, I didn’t understand why she did it, but I still remember the smiles that came across their faces. Community service and helping people is something I enjoy doing whenever I can.” During his life’s journey, Wiser reflected there have been four things that have been an honor to be called. “One is Mister, one is Coach, one is Dad, and now I’m fortunate enough to be a grandparent, and I love that. Those things have really felt good.” He now can also feel good about his selection as a Lycoming County Brotherhood Alliance Ray Keyes Sports Award recipient, a well-deserved honor.

53 • Webb Weekly October 17, 2018

Along with his coaching duties, Wiser works to organize the football program’s annual golf outing and ad sales for the game day program, along with serving the community in a number of service and charity events. His energy and positive attitude have created an environment that motivates others to get involved. For the past 15 years, he has led a yearly spring clean-up crew of over 200 studentathletes in Lycoming County that have assisted over 30 families each year that live with a challenging hardship. He has led countless fundraisers for students, families and non-profit causes. His work with students is inspiring, and his true compassion and unique approach bring out the best in everyone. He has been described as insightful, resourceful and dependable. He has a passion for the community and is a tireless servant for the causes he has served. “I love the community and helping other people, and I’ve grown to love that involvement. It is really neat to see other people smile,” Wiser stressed with a smile affixed across his own face as he talked. “To get young people to buy into doing those things that help others. I love to see that happen. “I’ve always told the students I’ve taught, and the players that I have coached to find a profession that will make them

T

Walk is scheduled for Saturday, October 20 at Hughesville High School. Proceeds from the fundraiser benefit Paternostro Family Foundation (PFF) in supporting local patients with cancer. “We created the Foundation in memory of our beloved sister, Kass, who passed away in 2012 at the age of 40 from cancer. Kass’s daughter Josie was only 4 years old when her mom died. Our father, Tom, then passed away suddenly in 2014 from cancer and we became even more determined to help local residents diagnosed with cancer to honor their memories,” explained Krista Paternostro Bower, founder and chairperson of PFF. Among other programs, PFF provides supplementary financial assistance to families with financial needs resulting from expenses associated with their cancer treatment. This program covers specific, non-medical costs related to a cancer diagnosis, for example, a utility bill.

“When a family is dealing with cancer and medical treatments - and I say ‘family’ not patient because cancer truly affects the whole family - the last thing they should have to worry about it is money or paying bills,” said Bower. “We know medical bills can add up very

family. We are a small Foundation, but we want to be able to ease at least a small part of the financial burden.” In addition, PFF distributes harnessing hope goodie bags to patients in treatment at UPMC Susquehanna Cancer Center. “As our mom recalled sitting next to Kass through numerous chemotherapy treatments, she remembered the items Kass liked to have close by to help with the environment, including snacks, hand cream, mouthwash, wet wipes, etc. each intended to provide a little comfort through the uncomfortable parts of the cancer journey,” added Bower. “We also recalled writing down moments of laughter, conversations worth noting, information about medications, and ideas for the future, so my mom always had a little notebook handy. We gathered up all of these items and started this program with our first delivery to the cancer center in 2014.” The Harnessing Hope 5k Run/Walk has been held three times, making this year’s race the fourth. “Our dad reminded us to live each day with passion, purpose, and in the pursuit of excellence. He was an integral part of our Foundation’s development before he passed away,” said Bower. “Kass was an avid athlete, so a 5K is a fitting tribute to one of her life passions. We are currently

I just got new hearing aids from Artisan Hearing and I can tell you THEY ARE WONDERFUL. Jennifer was great in getting me fitted with a custom hearing aid that I wanted. These new hearing aids have settings which I can control myself with the touch of my finger. I had another set of expensive hearing aids and they were no comparison to these hearing aids. It’s like a whole new world for me out there for me to be able to hear everything around me. My whole family is happy for me as I was missing out on a lot of things and I didn’t know it. Now when my neighbor yells to me I don’t have to go over to see what she said. Jennifer Burget is very professional and wants her customers satisfied.

Jersey Shore Rocks Pink for an Entire Season to Raise Awareness and Money for the Fight Against Breast Cancer

J

ersey Shore is a tough, no-nonsense kind of city located in between Williamsport and Lock Haven. Its high school sports teams have a reputation for being tough and physical. The fans also have a reputation as being hard-nosed with high expectations for their teams. With all this toughness walking around representing a mascot like the Bulldog, it might be a little confusing to see the

girls’ soccer team rocking pink jerseys in exchange for their usual black and orange. At the beginning of the season, the girls prepared to do the normal pink out game but quickly came up with the idea of wearing the jerseys all season and raising money for breast cancer all year instead of just for one game. “The booster club wanted to do it all month and give the proceeds from the

concession stand, but we thought you know what? With the outlook of things and the girls seeming to play harder let’s just wear them all season,” Jersey Shore coach Darrin Bischoff said. “They just came and said they were going Brett to wear pink and they Crossley said we could so the girls just continued to wear

it.” The moment was one Bischoff will remember for a while as the girls got to see their pink jerseys for the first time. The only disappointment may have been the discovery that they didn’t get one for him. “They were probably more excited than I was,” Bischoff said. “They didn’t get me one, so I’m upset about that. It was a team thing. It was a team decision. They wanted to do it and anything like that I’m all for it because you’re giving back to a good cause.” It’s a selfless act from a team that has used the situation to help raise money for the fight. They haven’t been that bad on the field either. Jersey Shore has wins over Danville, Wellsboro, and Shamokin. In fact, since starting the month of October, Jersey Shore has gone 3-1-1. “Every home game this

year is a pink out,” Taylor Fleming said. “It’s different. You never hear of a pink team. When teams come to Jersey Shore they might think why are they pink? They should be black. Maybe they laugh at us maybe they don’t, but we win because we’ve come together for breast cancer and that’s the goal.” Jersey Shore has taken to the pink jerseys, and with the success of the season and a possible postseason berth on the horizon, the pink jerseys might be here to stay. Whether it’s luck or simply making a fashion statement, the real reasons for rocking the jerseys have never left the team. Even in the beginning stages when the booster club and the team were seeing if it was even possible the girls knew it was for a good cause.
