Gerry’s World

E

ven in death, Gerry Ayers marched to the beat of his own drum. Or maybe a better way to say it is that he drove to the sound of his own music. He was truly one of the good guys that just had a little different approach to life than most, or maybe I should say all. Gerry was as genuine as the classic automobiles he kept inside his house. As I read his column “Time to Say Goodbye” that appeared in last week’s Webb Weekly I honestly didn’t think he’d pass so soon, Gerry always seemed to have those nine lives, and even when he was on the brink, he would bounce back. Little did I know he would leave us before his last column would reach your eyes. This, however, seems exactly how Gerry would have wanted it. He figured out a way to reach us even after he had left God’s green earth. It also tells us a lot about who Gerry was as a person. Even as he was approaching the end, he made sure we got his last column and left us in his own unique way. He was very passionate about cars, tennis, young folks, and penning his column. I remember when he held a writing camp for kids at the James V. Brown Library a few years back. I’ll never forget the energy and pride in his voice when he told me about the event. I only wish he could have done a lot more things like this. He just

loved teaching kids, especially the sport he loved, tennis. As he stared death in the eyes, he even used that as an opportunity to teach us all. ‘Gerry’s Journey,’ which appeared on WNEP gave him the opportunity to share with us his fight against cancer, and the perspective of losing his life to the disease. Thank you to WNEP for allowing him to do this. Gerry’s ‘Jaded Eye’ column appeared in the Webb Weekly for over a decade. It was vintage Gerry, you just never knew what he would write about, and he always did it with his own unique style. Most importantly, Gerry had the ability to make you laugh, cry and — most of all think— in these trying times. And they are his words from his last column from beyond. To me, that is exactly who Gerry was, someone who wanted to make a difference by connecting his pen to his thoughts about life and sharing them with us. He ended his final column with a thank you all for everything! Love, Gerry. I wish I had gotten the chance to tell Gerry thank you, for being you, and providing us the view from your jaded eye. It was me and my Father’s privilege to have you as part of the Webb Weekly family, and share your writings with the world. Love you, my friend. Godspeed. The other lesson Gerry shared with us

is that when someone has cancer never assume they have another day. This is something I’ve experienced way too often in recent years. Only the Good Lord knows when it’s time for them to leave their pain and this world behind. Jim Please never wait to see Webb, Jr. a family member, friend, or loved one that is fighting their final round against that dreaded disease. Don’t assume they’ll be there tomorrow based upon a doctor’s estimate of time. They also often leave us before their death. For your own peace try to have that last visit a little early rather than too late. Thank you to everyone who loved Gerry right back. For your cards, calls, prayers, and words of caring. Even though you may have never met him, he became like family to you through his words. This meant more to Gerry than any words could ever express. My prayers and condolences to Gerry’s family and friends. He would want you to be at peace and share the stories of his life with anybody who will listen. He would also want you to take great care of his cars. Knowing Gerry, he’s probably trying to figure out a way to come back and check on them. Gridiron Gold Tip of my Webb Weekly cap to Coach

Sean Tetreault’s A – Muncy Indians, Coach JC Keefer’s 3A – Montoursville Warriors, and Coach Tom Gravish’s 4A – Jersey Shore Bulldogs. All three won District IV Football Championships at their respective levels. For all the injuries and adversity local teams faced this season, they still brought home three gold medals for the West Branch Valley. There’s a lot of good to be said about the programs in our area, the young athletes that play the game, and the coaches that lead them. By the PIAA going to six classifications, it has also helped spread our local teams out. So they are not eliminating each other. At press time, the Montoursville Warriors were the lone local team left standing in the State Tournament. Coach Keefer’s crew was getting ready to take on Scranton Prep in the State 3A Quarter Finals. Prep knocked Loyalsock out of the running for a State Crown last season. Hopefully, as you’re reading this, the boys from the other side of the creek have won and moved on. Thank you to all the folks that make Friday Night Lights so special in our area. One last football note. Another thank you to all the sports fans that brought to my attention that I fumbled when I referred to Barry Sanders as “Sweetness” last week. It was Chicago Bears’ Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton who earned the “Sweetness” nickname, not Sanders. Maybe I need to enter the NFL’s concussion protocol because I have no idea how I did that. God Bless America.

Christmas Fun! OK, let’s get some holiday spirit shall we? We are in week two of our Blaise Alexander Family Dealership Christmas Fun Coloring Contest! The elves have arrived and are gearing up for sorting and judging the entries. This year we have three new elves joining us from the North Pole. While working for Santa, Tiramisu Cuddlelights makes slightly scary toy clowns and monkeys for all the good little children. She wears a fluffy jacket with rabbit ears, and she is a quick-witted elf who helps all of the other elves with their problems! We think she’s going to make an excellent lead-elf while in town. Tiramisu brought along her two assistants: Marzipan Greenpie and Chestnut Ivylights. Marzipan makes kaleidoscopes and telescopes for all the good little children. She wears a bright green hat with a bell on the end, and she loves to cook in the kitchen and make mince pies to feed to Santa’s reindeer! Chestnut makes awesome pirate ships. He wears a tunic embroidered with green ivy leaves, and he is a clever elf, and he is looked up to by all of the other elves for being so wise! I do not doubt that we are ready for all the Coloring Contest entries! So find all your crayons, colored pencils, paint, and glitter and send in your best work! You can find the coloring page, along with everything you need to know to enter on pages 18 and 19!

ore than ten years. Over 300 columns. Gerry Ayers was one of Webb Weekly’s most dedicated columnists. His columns were smart, funny and well written. He will be missed. Missed by the Webb staff. Missed by the folks at the Country Club. Missed by those at Fairfield. Missed by everyone he played tennis with or taught. And missed by the readers of Webb Weekly. I knew last week’s column would be his last, but I didn’t expect him to leave us so soon. But in true Gerry fashion he did it his way. Never one to shy away from tough subjects he allowed our community and beyond deep into his life when most of us would not. I thought WNEP did a great job of allowing Gerry to talk about death in a ‘positive’ way while respecting him and his dignity. It’s a tough subject to broach, but leave it Gerry to be the one to take it on. We all know that Gerry loved cars and tennis more than most things, but he also loved his family. I never met Mrs. Ayers, but reading Gerry’s stories about his mother, I almost feel like I knew her. His dad, brother, sister-in-law, nephew, and niece were beside him until the end. We will never have another Gerry in Webb Weekly, but we’ll always remember the fun, laughs and bit of oddball-ness that he brought to our pages. Gerry was a little quirky, but you couldn’t help but like him.

Our thoughts and condolences go out to the Ayers family. Gerry’s family asks that donations in Gerry’s memory be made to the United States TenSteph nis Association FounNordstrom dation, or Ellie’s Heart Foundation (at any local Woodlands Bank branch). A public memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at Trinity Episcopal Church located at 844 West Fourth Street in Williamsport. A reception immediately after the service will be held at the Williamsport Country Club. Before I move on to lighter subjects, because as I’ve said before, Gerry wouldn’t put up with much more sap from me, I want to use this opportunity to remind everyone to talk to their doctors about if or when colonoscopies are appropriate. Gerry had stage-4 colon cancer and while he lived a healthy and active life, he admittedly never had a colonoscopy. Prevention and early detection are so important regardless of the cancer type. It’s recommended that the average-risk patient get their first colonoscopy at age 50. People with a first-degree relative (like your mom, dad, or sister) who had colon cancer at age 60 or younger should start colon cancer screening either at age 40 or 10 years before the age that their family

t hit me like a deer in the headlights,” was the excited reaction of Montoursville’s Rachael Ulmer as she and her family re-entered their Bella Vista home following their ten-day stay at the Genetti Hotel awaiting the results of KISS-FM’s Extreme Kitchen Makeover contest. Dozens of onlookers consisting of sponsoring contractors, news media and friends had gathered outside the Ulmer home to await their arrival on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Chauffeured in a black Cadillac, driven by Fairfield Ford’s Rick Quigley and accompanied by KISS-FM’s Gary Chrisman, the ten-day exile from their home had filled the Ulmer’s with excited anticipation and uncertainty as to what awaited them inside. Making their way thru the crowd, Rachael, husband Todd, daughters Alexa and Bri, and son Shea couldn’t in their wildest dreams have foreseen what awaited them inside the small ranch home they had occupied since 2005. Gone were the 1970’s-style green counter tops and blue kitchen cabinets.

Gone was the wall that had separated the kitchen area from the living room. New granite countertops and sparkling white cabinets gave the kitchen a brand new look. The stairs leading to the basement were relocated and widened. Accessories, window treatments, and a new stoned wall gave the living room a welcoming feel. Down the hall, a new bathroom was an added touch that came as another complete surprise. It was all the culmination of KISSFM’s 11th Kitchen Makeover promotion, the brainchild of Chrisman as part of his Chrisman in the Morning weekday show. “It was started in the early 2000s,” Chrisman explained. “We’ve always tried to do the biggest and best promotions on KISS-FM. I’ve always felt you don’t have to act like you are in a small town to do big things on the radio. Originally, the idea was pitched to JP Stone at a time when home makeover was a big thing on TV. JP Stone got excited. We got excited, and we went with it. It was a huge promotion that received an unbelievable response. “The station took a couple of years off, and the promotion was brought back four years ago. This is our 32nd year of

was surprised by a visit from the Chrisman Morning Show and sponsor representatives to begin the makeover process. During the ten days that followed, the Ulmers were housed at the Genetti Hotel & Suites while the work was underway at their home. During the days that followed, up until the November 19th reveal, lead sponsors TurnKey Construction, TurnKey Electric, Lezzer Lumber, Lezzer Design Center, Susquehanna Marble and Granite, and Timeless Furniture and Interiors worked feverishly. Assisted by Plumbing Masters, Bill’s Appliance, Penn Hills Flooring, Compu-Gen Technologies, Elery Nau Hardware, the Decorating Center, and Williamsport Moving & Storage the remodel was a total team effort. Throughout the project, Olive Garden, New Trail Brewing, the Stonehouse Restaurant, and the James Restaurant at the Holiday Inn provided catering and amenities. Although it is the first year TurnKey Construction has been involved in the promotion Bower noted that Chrisman had called him about sponsorship and “it was something that interested me, so we were glad to jump on board.”

KISS-FM and doing big things locally is what wins in radio in this market, and that is what we’re known for. This year, Maurice Bower and his team at TurnKey Construction became our lead sponsor for the promotion and they have gone 120% in making this a WOW factor for the Ulmer family.” Contest rules stipulated that contestants had to be homeowners. Individuals had several ways to enter including on-line entries through the KISS-FM website. There were also daily opportunities during the Chrisman Morning Show, in addition to opportunities during the afternoon hours. This year there were more than 25,000 entries. People would listen for keywords to win and were randomly picked for qualification into the contest. Through this process, 200 people were selected out of the thousands of entries that had a chance to be drawn for the final prize. That number was eventually reduced to five finalists that included two from Montoursville, one from Lewisburg, Cogan Station, and South Williamsport. TurnKey representatives then visited each home to take pictures of the kitchen and draw up plans for each of the five homes. A random drawing determined the final winner. On November 9th, the Ulmer family

“We’ve done a lot of construction projects over the years, but this was the first that had such a tight deadline for getting things completed. There definitely were challenges to this project. We have structural changes like removing a wall and redoing the bathroom. We did all this in eight days, which is pretty amazing. We had ten workers divided into a couple of work shifts working 14-hour days, plus all the other sub-contractors involved made it a challenging project. But I can guarantee it is quality work.

That is what we’re known for. “This is a life-changing experience for the homeowner. When you have the opportunity to do something like this for someone in such a quick turn-around it truly changes their lives. It was wonderful to see the family’s reaction when they walked in that front door. This year Thanksgiving and Christmas will be totally different for the Ulmer’s,” Bower added. The fact that the Ulmers’ survived the long odds of winning the contest was

even more amazing when it was learned that it was fifth-grader Shea Ulmer who was the impetus behind the family’s entering the contest. “When I heard about the contest I realized that we really needed it and I told Mom we should enter. Then I just decided I would submit our entry, and I am really happy we won,” a smiling Shea revealed. “I entered the contest two or three times a day, and it worked! I really like what they’ve done, and it looks a lot better. I don’t even think this is our house. When I walked in the door and saw it, I didn’t know what to say at first. I’m never going to get used to it.”

When asked about Santa Claus coming, and even if he doesn’t, the family now has some pretty neat presents. To which Shea replied, “This is good enough!” Timeless Furniture & Interiors lead designer Seidel Shiffer took on the challenge of blending the work of the various contractors that transformed the interior flow of the Ulmer home. “This was a real team effort from everyone involved as there were various overlapping design and structural obstacles that had to be quickly addressed if we were going to make the project plan

work out,” Shiffler noted. “Having such a short time frame to work with can be a bit stressful, but when it all comes together so well, everyone deserves credit for a job well done.” Although overwhelmed, Rachael Ulmer confessed, “I wanted to check and see if we were at the right home. This is not in any way how we left it. This is much more than a kitchen makeover; it is a home makeover for us. It is just unbelievable. It will take us a while to adjust to these beautiful new surroundings. When I wake up tomorrow morning, I won’t know where I am.” With dozens of people milling through the house in amazement Todd Ulmer quietly took in the scene unfolding before his eyes. “I was blown away when I first walked into the house,” he confessed. “There used to be a wall separating the kitchen and living room, and now that wall is gone. We have a small house with a larger family, and the work that has been done just opens up the whole house. After we were notified that we won the contest I wasn’t sure what to expect, but what has been done is way above, and beyond any expectations, I could ever imagine. When those trucks

pulled up in front of the house ten days ago to begin the work, it felt like you’ve just won the lottery. “We’ve lived in this house since 2005, and they call this a dream kitchen makeover, but this is extreme. Since that time we could have never done all this work, and everything really looks great. Our next adventure will be to unpack all the boxes and decide what to keep and what goes where and it will be fun. We are so appreciative, but how could you not be?” As the excitement began to wear down, a satisfied Chrisman explained, “I’ve done local radio for 40+ years, this being our 32nd at KISS-FM, and this is the feel-good things that local radio is all about. Radio from the beginning is supposed to be fun, and I’ve been involved in many promotions over the years. That WOW factor of promotions that get people interested in your station and hopefully makes them listeners to your station. When you are able to do something of this caliber that is a local team-effort, it is the home run that keeps me pumped-up and why I still show up at 5:00 in the morning.” Simply put, the Ulmers are glad that he does!

About 60 boisterous Williamsport taverns, and 20 disgruntled club owners hailed and heralded the legalization of longer hours for an additional two hours until 2 a.m. Sundays. The new law permitting the two-hour extension, passed by the state legislature and signed into law by Gov. David Lawrence, is expected to hurt private clubs throughout the state, which because of their preferred position, had experienced high volume business Saturday nights. Previously, many patrons would leave bars early and head to the clubs for two additional hours where drinking was available.

It is expected that the one difference now will not be enough inducement to draw the bar patrons away before midnight. The law was supported by tavern owners bordering states, which had more liberal liquor laws such as New York and New Jersey. The practice of spending Saturday nights in another state was especially prevalent in the Philadelphia area. The recent legislation also liberalized the sales of liquor on Sundays in hotels in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh with another source of revenue particularly from conventions, often experienced in both cities. The senate passed the 2 a.m. closing bill, 32-16 and the house passed it 118-87.

An Appreciation of The Jaded Eyed: Gerry Ayers By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

L

ast week the Webb Weekly family experienced the terrible loss of Gerry Ayers, known to his readers as “The Jaded Eye.” I was lucky enough to have known Gerry many years before he became associated with Webb Weekly. Gerry and I worked together as parttime clerks at “Jocks” sporting goods store on the Golden Strip in 1993 and

1994. You really get to know someone when you work with them, and that was certainly the case with Gerry and I. Gerry kind of took me under his wing. It was the first time I had ever worked at a retail establishment, and he impressed upon the importance of keeping the customer satisfied. Gerry was four years younger than me, but he had this wisdom about doing the job that we were doing, and he was a great help to me. It was never dull working with him. I

thought of him as kind of a quirky fellow. He loved heavy metal rock and was particularly fond of bands such as Nine Inch Nails. He reminded me very much of a short-haired version of Garth from the film “Wayne’s World,” only much smarter. You couldn’t be around Gerry very long before he would start talking about one of the main passions of his life — classic cars. He spoke with pride of the ones that he owned. I remember very well when he brought his Viper to work one time and was showing it off with great pride. He loved those cars and was an avid attendee of the Classic Car Shows held in Carlisle twice a year, in the spring and fall. Even

as he was starting to enter his final days, he summoned up the strength in early October to walk the more than 15 miles that covered the Car Show. He loved his cars right to the end. It must have been an excruciatingly, tiring experience for him to do this. My younger sister, Kathy and my brother-in-law, who are also avid Carlisle goers, found it very tiring and they are perfectly healthy. I can’t imagine the reservoirs of strength and courage that Gerry must have summoned forth in order to go to his beloved car show for one last time. One of the other great passions in his

When I told him that I was working on writing a history of baseball in Williamsport, he seemed very interested in the project, even though he was not a big baseball fan. I showed him some of the early drafts of my work, and he was genuinely pleased to be able to review it and offer some comments and suggestions. He was always very generous and encouraging with his comments. I could see at that

He could be seen on area tennis courts playing or giving lessons to youngsters and promoting the sport he loved so much to a new generation of players. I believe that it was his competitiveness and athletic prowess that served him well in his final illness, against a foe he was determined to beat. In Gerry’s columns, you could sense his humanity. He wrote about his hopes, his fears, his dreams, his fun, and all the things in between that moved him. He did it with humor, profundity, and a sense of fun. You can see all of this in his final column, which ran last week. You can’t help but be moved by it. s a little girl, one of the magical things I loved about Christmas was Santa Claus. I loved the songs about him, and the movies, like “Miracle on 34th Street.” Every year, I willed myself to stay up until he came so I could catch a glimpse of him. Of course, I never did see Santa, but I cherished the note he left telling us how much he liked our cookies and that the reindeers appreciated the carrots we left out. Now I have my own little girls to share the magic of the holiday season including, first and foremost, the miracle of Jesus, the

ending of this year and the beginning of a new one, and all the twinkling lights keeping the darkness at bay. However, I don’t want them to get wrapped up (pun intended) in the materialism that has now become inherent for this time of year. So, where does that leave Santa? According to my 3-year-old, Santa Claus is her friend. I don’t know how they met, but, like Mickey Mouse, you just can’t avoid these childhood cultural archetypes. I have considered talking about Santa as St. Nicholas, but as the patron saint of sailors, brewers, archers, repentant thieves, children,

merchants, and let’s not forget pawnbrokers, I feel that’s too much information for a toddler. I considered avoiding Santa for one more year, but here recently as I was losing patience with my daughter who refused to put on her hat and coat I Bernadette blurted out, “Well Santa Ulsamer won’t be bringing you any presents this year!” It just came out of nowhere, said without thinking. Which made me realize perhaps this Santa fellow could also be my friend in terms of a behavioral tool.

Hello, Elf on the Shelf! I did not grow up with an Elf on the Shelf, but I have seen it used on various Mom blogs I follow. The basic concept is that there’s this “Scout Elf ” sent from Santa’s workshop to report back on kids to help Santa with his nice or naughty list. From what I can gather, the Elf can get into a bit of mischief itself, like making various messes, etc. I’m thinking our Elf will just hang out because I don’t need to be doing more cleaning or set an example that bad behavior is part of festive fun. My hope is that I can use the Elf to remind my daughter that her friend Santa does not like it when she does not listen and do as she’s asked. Her friend

of dinosaurs, unicorns, gnomes, and fairies. True, the Elf on the Shelf has valid criticisms, like it’s a made-up tradition that promotes consumerism, the aforementioned eerie surveillance vibe, in addition to promoting the “Santa Lie” taking away from the true meaning of the holiday. I admit I agree with all of those points. But, as the parent of a young child who loves all things magical and is starting to understand the concept of holidays, I think, if used appropriately, I’ll have another tool in my disciplinary kit because she really just needs to sit her “butt on the chair” and eat her dinner. The elf is watching.

Santa wants her to be a good girl and listen to Mommy and Daddy, and that HIS friend Mr. Elf is letting him know how she’s doing. Do I want to promote this “big brother” type of surveillance? No. But do I want my daughter to eat her dinner and clean up after herself? Yes! And, it just so happens we were gifted an Elf on the Shelf last Christmas, so it’s already spying on us from its box. I also think this will be a way, along with an Advent Calendar, to get my girls excited about Christmas in all of its forms, both spiritual and secular. Plus, my 3-yearold is a big fan of make-believe, and this will just add to her ongoing narrative

County Hall Corner: Getting Engaged By Larry Stout

T

here are three reasons that the general public attends public municipal meetings — to engage, enrage, and enjoy. The Lycoming County Board of Commissioners meets twice weekly with occasional exceptions due to holidays or training events. The Tuesday meeting is a “work session,” meaning that the commissioners review the items that will be voted on during the “regular session,” which would be held on the following Thursday. The Tuesday meeting is, by far, the more interesting to attend from an informational standpoint. When county directors or their representatives present their funding requests, the commissioners will ask questions, often in a “what if?” scenario, challenging the county employees to imagine if their request were modified or turned down, what the consequences or alternatives could be. The exchanges are almost always civil,

and sometimes quite lively. But what makes this time so interesting is that in some cases, members of the general public offer their own points of the view on the subject. These are the Engaged who know something of the issue or at least have an interest and offer their opinion on the subject. Technically, these individuals should wait until “public comments” are offered at the end of the meeting, but the commissioners bend the protocol because they genuinely appreciate hearing from citizens who are impacted by their decisions. The Engaged are generally single individuals, but the Enraged often

along with his wife, Louise, raised three children, with four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He worked most of his career as an independent insurance agent, most recently as Regional Vice President of the Henry Dunn Agency. Yet as busy as he was with work and family, he found time to volunteer on the boards of many local organizations, such as the West Branch Builder’s Association, Horizon Federal Credit Union, the Williamsport Chamber of Commerce, and even on various committees and governing council of his church. I knew Dave in his role on the Clinton Township Planning Commission and his chairmanship of the West Branch Regional Sewer Authority. Dave Eakin was admired by all for his wisdom and his ability to deal with problems. He had an incredible ability to speak so objectively on issues; it was hard to tell which side of an issue he stood on. Many in this county will miss Dave Eakin greatly. We need more like him who would be willing to serve, not for glory or personal gain, but for the greater good.

come out in force. In the past, issues such as the $5.00 license fee and visitor bureau taxes brought dozens to a meeting at a time, and they did not come in a good mood. The Enraged prefer to come to the regular Thursday session, probably because it gets more attention. They speak with great passion, generally because these issues were quite personal to them. And since these are generally quite dramatic, they bring out others who just want to “enjoy.” (I must admit, I also take rather guilty pleasure out of these more impassioned meetings). Not surprisingly, members of the Engaged and the Enraged find themselves in public office. The Enraged often struggle as they find that it is much harder to solve problems than to point them out. The Engaged, on the other hand, make the best of public servants. One of the best examples of an Engaged man who took an active role in local political affairs was the recently deceased Dave Eakin. Mr. Eakin lived in Montgomery, where he spent the good portion of his life. He was married for nearly 54 years and

November is Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Month

T

he YWCA Northcentral PA recognizes the month of November as Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Month. As the only long-term shelter for homeless women and women with children, our goal is to make the community more informed about how homelessness plagues many individuals in Lycoming County. Liberty House is a permanent supportive housing program for women experiencing homelessness who have a history of addiction. Last year we served 120 clients through the program to help them

obtain employment, stay sober and find a place to live. For people facing homelessness, finding housing begins with a call to 2-1-1 to connect with a Coordinated Entry employee who finds them the right program in a 33-county radius. If they qualify for Liberty House and a bed is available, they will come to the YWCA, 815 W. Fourth St., to start turning their life around. On average almost 100 individuals per month in Lycoming County call 2-1-1 in need of temporary or permanent housing, according to Jackie Condor, Coor-

not recognize that someone needs help.” There is not a one-size-fits-all profile for what someone experiencing homelessness looks like. They are veterans, people struggling with addiction and mental illness, victims of abuse and even individuals with university degrees who once had high-paying jobs. “What I want everyone to know about homelessness is that nobody deserves to be homeless,” Harris said. In January the Department of Housing and Urban Development had its annual Point-In-Time Count where organizations count how many individuals are experiencing homelessness in their county on a designated night. Staff and volunteers count each person they see out in

the community without shelter as well as people living in permanent and emergency shelters. In Lycoming County during the count, there were 127 individuals either living unsheltered or staying in a local shelter like Liberty House. This was a 10 person increase from the 2017 count. For 15 years, Liberty House has provided an encouraging environment for women to take the steps to become independent. Each client is paired with a caring case manager who empowers them to make positive changes that will help them on their journey to meet their personal goals. One of the ways community members are helping spread awareness about

homelessness is by “Swiping Out Hunger and Homelessness.” Different restaurants downtown will have an electronic credit card reader that gives their customers an opportunity to support Liberty House. The credit card reader will be at the Moon and Raven Public House, 155 W. Fourth St., from Nov. 23 to Dec. 1 and the Old Corner Hotel, 328 Court St., from Dec. 2 to 10. More will be announced. Other ways people can make a difference in our clients’ lives is by donating gently-used clothing to The Boutique, all of the proceeds from the store directly benefit the YWCA’s life-saving programs. Store hours are Wednesdays 3-6 p.m., Thursdays and Fridays 11 a.m.-5 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m.-2 p.m. PA #121099

Homelessness in Lycoming County is an invisible issue. It is not like large cities where people sit in plain sight with cardboard signs asking for spare change. Here homeless individuals end up sleeping in their cars, camping in tents along the river and couch surfing, said Heather Harris, YWCA Direct Services Supervisor. “People experiencing homelessness work to hide that they’re struggling,” she said. “Often times it is masked and people do

O

n this past Monday, more than a million hunters hit Penn’s woods in pursuit of whitetail deer. Schools closed for the day throughout the Commonwealth since a great percentage of students, teachers and staff would, no doubt, have been absent for the day with some variation of “buck fever” or “one-day deer flu”! Being a participant in the Opening Day of Deer Season has been a tradition in our state for generations and gives hunters the opportunity to create

memories that will last a lifetime. Every year, during the weekend preceding the opening day, the excitement of the first day of deer season is evident by the steady flow of pickup trucks and SUVs northbound, each one laden with hunting gear, gun racks and several occupants dressed in fluorescent orange. These travelers all have one thing in common — to get to “camp” for opening day, and hopefully with a few days to relax before the opener. Most will go to a hunting cabin where they will be joined by a handful of hunting buddies, and some will go to a

the antler restriction was put into place. While only about one-third of hunters were successful in taking a deer last year, the numbers should go up for this hunting season. Less than two decades ago, the majority of bucks taken were shot on the first day of the season, with the greatest percentage being 1 ½-year-old deer. Last year, that percentage of young bucks dropped again, with 57% of bucks taken being 2 ½-year-old or older bucks with larger racks. For those hunters who are interested in taking a larger racked buck, the chances grow with each coming year. If you question this, take a trip to local taxidermists and the area butcher shops where you will see for yourself that bigger racked and larger bodied deer are taken

each year. Along with the high percentage of opening day success, the first Saturday of the season also yields a high degree of success. These two days are the ones when the greatest number of hunters are in the woods. As hunters move into the woods after breakfast and then back out as darkness descends at the end of the day (along with a possible roundtrip back to the cabin for lunch!), they will push deer by another hunter who is patiently waiting on his stand. For a hunter who can be patient enough, his best friends are all of those other hunters moving in and out, too impatient to stand still for very long! An interesting fact is that last year, for the very first time in Pennsylvania’s deer

management history, hunters took more deer on the first Saturday than on the opening day! Whether you are hunting by yourself, with a buddy or two, or in a gang of a larger number of hunters, the greater amount of time you spend in the woods, the greater your chances of success will be. If you can just discipline yourself to pack a lunch or some snacks and be in the woods from before daylight to the end of legal shooting hours just before dark, you will have the greatest chance of harvesting a nice buck — perhaps even that “buck of a lifetime” that we all daydream about! Remember to always wear the required amount of fluorescent orange and Always Positively Identify Your Target — and beyond!

hunting club where up to 30 or 40 would-be deer slayers will spend the upcoming week or two deer hunting. Many of the local folks will go to a nearby camp, with some merely walking out their back doors to hunt on their own or neighboring properties. But each and every one will toss and turn the night before the big day and wake up before the alarm has a chance to signal that it is time to roll out and start the day. Interestingly, the opportunities for success in hunting Pennsylvania whitetails seem to improve each year. In 2002, antler restrictions were put in place that requires a minimum number of points for a legally taken buck. Last year, 163,750 bucks were taken by hunters, and thus yielding the second-largest harvest of bucks since

Diseased bears lose energy, slow down, eat less and eventually stop moving and die. Mange in Pennsylvania bears seems to be increasing and in 2017 seventy bears were euthanized or found dead as a result of mange. There may be a treatment however since scientists are attempting to treat the disease with a drug used to prevent heartworm in dogs. Unfortunately several treatments are required for dogs over three to four weeks and that cannot be done in the case of bears.

what about the ugly? I think it’s a bit of a stretch to place bears in the “cute” category but they certainly are an exciting and maybe even an awesome sight especially when it’s unexpected but sorry to say they can be downright ugly; yes I’m referring to their appearance. What I’m actually talking about here is their physical appearance due to the ravages of mange. A bear with mange can lose all or part of its fur covering exposing bare skin resulting in a down-right ugly looking critter. Mites spread mange; some animals infested with mites develop mange and others do not. In some animals the immune system kicks in and they recover-oth-

THREE WAYS TO SAVE A LITTLE MONEY AND LOSE A LOT Crisis planning for long-term care costs is a task for an elder-law attorney and Certified Medicaid Planner™. The advice and expertise of these professionals is not free. We sometimes encounter folks who have decided to do their own planning. Here are three tools they use. After reading, you can decide if this is a good plan for you. 1. Get your advice online. Everyone knows the world-wide web is loaded with information. Good, bad, ugly, it’s all there, free for the taking. And because it’s on the web it must be accurate, right? 2. Ask your neighbors and friends what worked for them. Because someone has had one experience with a nursing home they obviously know the ins and outs of what’s best for every situation. We all have the same resources, history and goals, right? 3. Expect instant results and don’t listen to the professionals. The stress level of someone making arrangement for the care and financial management of a long-term care patient is extreme. We want the situation fixed and we want it resolved in our favor NOW. Medicaid qualification while preserving resources is really simple and anybody should be able to do it, right? The common thread in all of these misconceptions is the desire to save a few dollars. We understand that, and we work very hard to keep fees at a reasonable level. If you’re doing your own planning the possibility of saving a little money and losing a lot is almost guaranteed. Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are experienced and knowledgeable, and will work for you for a reasonable fee. Do you still want to do this on your own?

“Honestly, Dom really came to my mind and eyes when they were making a run in the high school playoffs,” Coen confessed. “A former player of mine is the head coach at St. Pius. I watched that game and St. Pius was throwing it, and Dom was getting the ball and running for touchdowns. My reaction was ‘holy cow’ every time he touched the ball it seemed like he was running 60 yards. “I think a lot of schools didn’t recruit him because of the level of school he came out of. But that St. Pius game piqued our interest. He came to campus for a visit and liked it, and it turned out to be a very good fit for him and a wonderful thing for our football team.” Looking back, Bragalone has no regrets about his experiences the past four years. He’s helped his team win two Patriot League titles, firmly entrenched himself in the Lehigh record books, gained All-American recognition, and obtained a quality education. As for beating archrival Lafayette; “It’s an awesome experience to play and beat Lafayette. The entire week leading up to the game is full of Lehigh spirit, and the game is exciting to play.” As for what’s next, he has another goal in mind. He wants a shot at playing professional football. It only takes one opportunity for that dream to become a reality and Bragalone’s Lehigh teammates have high praise for their hard-running, soft-spoken team captain. “I think he is the best running back in the country, and the best athlete I’ve ever seen,” said quarterback Brad Mayes. “If he doesn’t get drafted, I don’t think I will watch the NFL anymore.”

there with the best of them. While his arrival at Lehigh was not the campus destination most fans — or he — originally anticipated, the Mountain Hawk nesting place provided Bragalone with both a good education (a psychology major) and the opportunity to be a four-year starter on the gridiron. In the South Williamsport community, the Bragalone legend began to grow during his sophomore year. Penn State’s then head coach, Bill O’Brien, saw something special in Bragalone and wanted to bring him to Happy Valley. The interest was so strong; the Nittany Lions sent observers to the Mountaineers weight room to see for themselves the lifting prowess the young Bragalone was exhibiting on a regular basis. Additionally, he was a regular invitee to PSU games and visits under O’Brien’s watch. When O’Brien left Penn State to take the head coaching job of the NFL Houston Texans, the interest in Bragalone waned under James Franklin’s watch. Seems they turned their attention to another pretty good running back recruit named Saquon Barkley. Bragalone had also drawn interest from Army but staying close to home so his family could watch him play was an important consideration. But the ultimate interest from Lehigh did not come until late in his senior season, and only after he had put on a spectacular six-touchdown performance in the state Class A PIAA quarterfinals. Following Bragalone’s freshman season at Lehigh, I had the opportunity to talk with the Mountain Hawks head coach Andy Coen about his young running back’s performance. Asked when he first had recruiting interest in Bragalone, Coen’s answer surprised me.

istrict 4 has continued to prove itself with top athletes makings statements at the highest levels. This fall season was no different as surprises and championships jumped out for highlights throughout the three-month-long season. There are plenty of standouts to look back on, but here are just a few as the fall season comes to a close. Tennis — South Williamsport’s Olivia Dorner was outstanding this year in tennis. She rarely dropped points and cruised through the District 4 Singles Championships to claim her first title. She also helped the South Williamsport team capture the top slot in the District as it defeated Montoursville in a memorable match at Muncy. It was the type of year any competitor would want, but for one like Dorner, it might just be the beginning. She’s a freshman who finished third at States after her run through Districts. She has shown an ability to get better, and she has shown the drive to want to get better. There were plenty of highlights throughout the fall season, but the one that really stands out might not have even taken place on the court. As she quickly finished off her top singles match during the Dis-

trict 4 team tennis championships Dorner turned into a supportive teammate, and it was easy to see just how much it meant to her. She wanted her teammates to have a good finish, and she wanted them to perform well. Dorner cheered them on, and the favor was returned as she competed in the semifinals of the State Singles Tournament. Dorner will be a name that will become common on the tennis scene if it hasn’t already. Dorner will be back next year for another run. She will also be there to support her teammates as South Williamsport’s tennis program continues to stand out. Golf — Wellsboro’s Benjamin Barnett was faced with a difficult situation moments after he walked off the Williamsport Country Club Course. He finished second at the District 4 Championships and missed winning by a single stroke to Central Columbia’s Grant Gronka. It was a challenging moment, to say the least, but Barnett wasn’t about to let it define his season. He rebounded with a big performance at the Regional Tournament, finishing his one-day marathon with a final score of 81 for a tenth place finish. It was a day marked by much tougher conditions than the final day of Districts and Barnett survived to qualify for the State Tournament.

of those goals as they defeated the Tigers 4-3. The game was close, but it also started to make fans and players on other teams take notice of what Lewis was doing on the pitch. With expectations now much higher, Lewis continued to impress as he added three more goals to his totals in a 4-1 win over Galeton. Lewis has the ability to use his speed to get behind the defense, but still has the body control to collect passes and put shots exactly where he needed to put them. Lewis will graduate at the end of the year, but he definitely put a stamp on the postseason. Football — When it came to big plays in the District Loyalsock’s Gerald Ross was one of a kind. He was a constant threat

to go deep and lead his team in receiving throughout the 2018 season. Ross finished with 1,024 yards and 11 receiving touchdowns to lead his team throughout the season. The Lancers eventually found their way to the playoffs but fell in a memorable game against Shamokin. Despite the early finish, it would be hard not to call Ross’s year highly successful as he continued to make his case as the best athlete in the area. Ross put on a memorable performance against Shikellamy early in the season. He pulled down ten receptions for 211 yards and scored three touchdowns as the Lancers downed Shikellamy 35-0. It was the first of many standout performances throughout the year for Ross.

MURRAY

Cross Country — Disappointment was all over the face of Loyalsock’s Isabell Sagar as she accepted her second place medal at the PIAA Track and Field Championships. It was a down moment for Sagar, but much like all the athletes mentioned she bounced back in a big way. The 2018 Cross Country Championships started like most championship meets as the cool fall conditions made for a tough day on a difficult course. Sagar jumped out with a fast pace time and continued to push to finish with a final time of 19:12, claiming the top spot in the entire state. It’s always nice to see young athletes bounce back and Sagar was no different. With one gold under her belt, this year’s track and field season should be a memorable one for her.
