There was a youth soccer game going on the night I was there, the facility is also perfect for baseball and softball. I ran into my old friend Tommy Ott during the tour; he’s available to help the ballplayer in your life. The Ott and Webb boys played against each other during the school year, and then together for the travel ball season. Next up in the 110,000 square foot facility is the 66 trampolines of Flyworld where you can jump until your heart’s content, or just let the kids jump and tire themselves out, while you enjoy a drink. A new addition at this end of the building is Laser Quest — laser tag taken to a whole new level with 20 tagged phasers available. A great place for a little corporate team building — or getting even — I’ll let you decide. There were four workers from the gas industry having some fun during my visit. They represented Arkansas, Louisiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. In talking with Dan and his wife Monica, it is their goal to provide a fun, family-friendly destination that anyone can enjoy no matter of their age. A place completely unique to our area that represents how blessed we are to call this area of Penn Wood’s home. They would also like to decorate the sports bar area with local sports memorabilia and vintage sports equipment. This to honor area athletes, teams and the tradition of sports in the West Branch Valley. If there is anything you would like to put on display, please reach out to Blake Sampson, Liberty Arena GM at blake@thelibertyarena. com, or 570-505-1105. I’m sure like me, many of you have items just collecting dust in the attic; this would be a great way to have them seen. I love looking at old sports memorabilia, especially from our area. So get out and enjoy everything Williamsport has to offer during the Christmas season and add one new stop

to your list. We will have much more on the Liberty Arena after the New Year.

Welcome to the World!

It has always amazed me how when one person leaves our life, a fresh new bundle of joy comes right on in. God’s perfect timing and uplifting of the human spirit on full display. This was the case recently within my Webb Weekly family. As you know, Gerry Ayers left us for a much better place. His brother, Geoff ’s eulogy was perfect. Right on point with the stories and memories Gerry would want talked about. But it was also a moving tribute to a brother, son, and friend to so many. As this was going on, we were awaiting the arrival of Ron Mingle’s first granddaughter. If you remember, Ron has been a part of our Webb Weekly family since the start. His daughter Andi is married to Donny Sauers, John’s son from right up the street at Sauers Trading. All of them are great people, and I have known John longer than I have known the Mingles believe it or not. Many folks have asked me about this since I announced the couple was expecting in a previous article.

Well, Donny and Andi were blessed with a healthy and beautiful 8 lb. 6 oz. baby girl. Josie Lucille Sauers came into the world on November 29th. Congratulations to Andi and Donny, you will be great parents. Please don’t wait too long to have the next one. And their families, especially Pappy Mingle and Pop Pop Sauers. God Bless America.

All on a network that covers 99% of Americans. Unlimited plans starting at $25/month Monthly taxes included. No overage fees. No annual contracts. No credit checks.

This Christmas…

O

K, so as of this writing (which is Friday), I am still nowhere near ready for Christmas. I’m not a procrastinator by nature, but Christmas gets me just about every year. I think I need to go get a Christmas tree so that I can feel the whole Christmas Spirit more wholly. Maybe a walk downtown to check out the shops and cute lights, or a trip to Candy Cane Lane will do the trick. Or maybe I just need to blast Mariah until I don’t have a choice but to feel the Christmas vibes. Blaise Alexander Family Dealership’s Christmas Coloring Contest… Holy moly! We have gotten a ton of entries for our Christmas Coloring Contest! Thank you so much to all the kids who entered! Tiramisu, Marzipan, and Chestnut are still hard at work sorting and judging all the entries. I’m not sure how they manage to get anything accomplished considering every time I see them they are either eating sugar or napping in the conference

room. Everyone in the office has given up trying to clean up after them. We are just leaving everything be until Steph we ship them home. Nordstrom Until then, everything will just be covered in frosting and glitter. We will be announcing the winners to the contest in next week’s issue. There will also be a complete list of everyone who entered this year! There is still time to get your entries in, so go forth and color! I also want to send another thank you to all of those supplying our great prizes! This year we have prizes from Flyworld, English Model Railroad, Elery Nau, Hooplas, Treasure Castle Playland, Harder Sporting Goods, Digiplex, Dairy Queen, Gustonian Gifts and Faxon Bowling! Be sure to check out next week’s issue for all the winners! Also, as you are out and about this

Side Note: I want to take a quick sec to let you know that we have a couple of new writers joining us this week. Tom (page 28) and Sam (page 18) will be offering us their thoughts and musings. Tom was inspired by the work of Gerry Ayers and will be continuing in that same vein and Sam is a wonderful young lady I met recently that will be writing about music, both locally and beyond. Now, Sam and I have a connection, because when I first started writing for Webb Weekly, I also wrote a music column, so I couldn’t resist giving her the opportunity to do the same.

The Salvation Army, American Rescue Workers, Toys for Tots, Family Promise, the Lycoming County United Way, the Central PA Food Bank and more can all use extra help during the holidays, so if you are able, please keep them in mind for Christmas donations. 30th Annual Mifflinburg Christkindl Market Takes Place December 13 to 15 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

O

ne of this area’s most notable and interesting Christmas-related events takes place for the 30th time in Mifflinburg when the Christkindl Market takes place from December 13 to 15. The largest winter festival in the Susquehanna River Valley, the threeday Mifflinburg Christkindl Market, will open Thursday, Dec. 13. The outdoor, authentic, German Christmas Market attracts approximately 15,000 visitors each year. This year is the 30th anniversary for the Market. With over 100 vendors, visitors may savor a variety of Germanic-inspired foods. Eleven new vendors join the Market this year. Detailed information on vendors and other features mentioned below are provided on the Christkindl web site: http://www.OldChristkindl.com The theme this year is Vienna, the largest city in Austria and the second-largest German-speaking city in the world. Vienna was the boyhood

home of Rudi Skucek, the founder of our Christkindl Market. The Board selected Vienna as this year’s theme as a tribute to Rudi on this, the 30th Anniversary of the Christkindl Market. A presentation on Vienna, including photos and videos, will be presented each day of the Market. Check the Schedule of Events brochure and the Christindl website for times and location. The Opening Procession begins at 5 p.m. Thursday, December 13, led by the high school Renaissance Band and includes St. Nicholas. The woodcarver will return this year with an amazing array of large and small hand-carved trees of all sizes up to three feet tall. The ever-popular Hilby, the German Juggle-Boy, will be back all day on Friday and Saturday. Also returning: Singer-Guitarist K.J. Reimensnyder-Wagner, Vocalist Alyssa Ronco, Bryan Herber, pianist, and Magician Brent Kessler, as well as the numerous instrumental and choral ensembles from Mifflinburg schools. The Shippensburg Blaskapelle (German Band) returns for their twen-

Children will be assisted in making a gingerbread house or decorating soap in the shape of a Christmas tree provided by Pompeii Street Soap. lways give thanks for the things you have, because what you have might not be what someone else has. You might have a nice source of entertainment, but the other person might not have nice things and can’t get access to the Internet. Always give thanks for the food that you eat. You might eat three meals a day, but someone else might not even get to eat one meal a day. Always give thanks for the shelter you inhabit. Some people have families and don’t even have a place to live and can’t afford things like school or medicines for themselves and other people that they care for. Always give thanks for the clothes you wear, because you

wear coats, jackets, and shoes that keep you warm and comfortable. Meanwhile, people who can’t afford those things have to suffer the gruesome cold winters and other things, like rain and snow. But we should also give thanks to food banks and homeless shelters, because when we can’t afford to donate and help, they can. Therefore, we should always give thanks because you might have something, but another might not.

he reason why I like Christmas is because it’s God’s birthday, and because of the meaning of giving. Sometimes I don’t like the presents, but I take them to be nice. My favorite part about Christmas is spending time with

my family. My big brother is disabled, so I love him a lot. It’s like he is the best, but he’s not. I love everybody the same. I love, love, love the food. It’s the best. Thank you, God, for making my family. The best part about this Christmas is that my PopPop might be coming up to spend the holidays with us. We might not be able to get a lot of

things this Christmas because my mom was in a car accident and she can’t work right now. But as long as I’m with my family, that’s all that matters. Hopefully God looks down on people and helps them this Christmas. I had two cats , but one ran away. I hope he comes back because we loved him and he loved us. I love Christmas and I hope you do, too. Merry Christmas to all of you.

hen Meg Finn, director of the Lycoming Arts Council, and accomplished area musician and music producer, Walt Straiton, met several months ago to discuss the idea of producing a Christmas music album featuring area musicians, they had no idea that it would become such a work of love and great music that would benefit Lycoming Arts, nor would they know that Meg would not be around for its release. According to Straiton, the album represents a broad cross-section of the wide variety of musical artists in our region and features 17 songs. “This is a project that I always had in the back of my mind, a throwback to my days growing up as a kid in Harrisburg — I always looked forward to the Saturday after Thanksgiving when both the Goodyear and Firestone Tires Stores would release an annual LP (long playing album) that had a variety of artists offering their version of time-honored Christmas classics,” Straiton told “Webb Weekly”. “I approached Meg Finn to see if this was something that she would be interested in to benefit Lycoming Arts where she served as Executive Director.”

He said there was a twofold goal, first and foremost to highlight the depth and breadth of musical talent that resides in this region, and secondly to support Meg’s tireless efforts to both unify and strengthen the numerous arts organizations within Lycoming County via Lycoming Arts, and then to fuse those efforts together for comprehensive business development throughout the county. Straiton was asked how he recruited the various artists to perform on the album/ disc. “We can all be grateful for the unanimous positive response to my request to contribute a ‘track’ for this project, whether it be for individual artists, a small group, or a large, established musical organization, we laid out the project in late spring and the process of gathering the music started,” Straiton said. “With some groups, like the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra, we were able to draw upon previous recordings, with others like the WAHS Millionaire Strolling Strings and GQ, special recording sessions were hosted before the end of last school year. Lastly, there was a series of individual sessions hosted either at Lycoming College of Green Valley Recording Studios in Hughesville, as we approached the com-

“It’s certainly an unintended consequence. Several friends took the lead in dedicating the CD to Meg immediately following her unexpected and tragic death as we were traveling together in the Far East,” Straiton said. “For those who never had the opportunity and privilege of knowing Meg, you will be able to sense her elegant essence, vitality, and unique spirit by listening to the last track, her performance of Eartha Kitt’s original arrangement of ‘Santa Baby’ — recorded just 72 hours prior to her passing. Her own talent was simply extraordinary! She had a big role in it. After bringing the idea

pletion of the project. I’m most thankful for the ‘golden ears’ of both Tim Breon, along with Richard Rupert of Green Valley Recording Studios and the good folks at Robert M. Sides.” He said the objective was to sample a broad cross-section of musical styles, symphonic, jazz, rock-n-roll, country, Christian and span the entire spectrum of age groups and experience ranging from the youngest (the Williamsport Suzuki Violins) to the professional (Williamsport Symphony Orchestra) and many more. Straiton sees the project as an unintended tribute to Meg Finn.

“The disc is available throughout the area, including downtown Williamsport businesses. With canvassing facilitated by the Williamsport Lycoming Chamber of Commerce and the Williamsport Business Association — both of these organizations have been superb in assisting us with this effort,” Straiton said. In addition, several other specialty stores (Willards, The Stereo Shoppe, AVU Goldsmith’s, Smith’s Jewelers in Montoursville), along with the Community Arts Center have requested copies to be placed in their stores. We’ve already had several businesses approach us for multiple copies to give as gifts to their employees for the holiday season.”

to her in spring, we divided up the work, me on the creative musical side, and she on the creative art, sales, and marketing side. We’re both grateful for the incredible support by the graphics and print team at Labels by Pulizzi, the Chamber, and the downtown merchants.” This is the first time that Straiton has been involved in a project of this scope. He said it has been incredibly inspiring to work with so many old, and new, musical colleagues, some of which have been working together for almost 40 years! He said he is looking forward to seeing how they can further unify our wonderful musical community by hopefully reprising this project in 2019.

Music in a Minute…

Song of the Week…

S

.I.R. Mellowick

It’s funny how Williamsport was bare and deserted when I was a naivé child, and the arts had been hidden away in those old Victorian homes — afraid to come out and represent the talent that this small town holds within its heart. Today, the Port is well known for its music and a lady, who I call a goddess, is a big part of it: Kimberly Adair. Kim’s become more than just a teacher. She’s a superb friend, a second mom, a therapist, and a listener. When her album “I Surrender” came out, I immediately picked one up and listened to it. A masterpiece. I fell in love with the fifth song “Bleeding Hearts”. The rendition of this song is bewitching and soulful. I’m talking about a woman whose voice is nothing but pure soul. Pure soul. As she would say “like spreading butter on a pancake”; so smooth and meant to be mutual with the world. I find myself screaming, begging, and praying for Kim’s fame to approach her one day. The lyrics are fair to their meaning: “lately I’ve been wonderin’ what’s goin’ on all around me. People fussing, fighting, killing, cheating, speaking hate so casually. I shake my head when I see the frightening news on the TV screen. My heart cried out for pain goin’ on behind the scenes”. You

can hear every word and emotion portrayed, her emotion and thoughts about today’s violence and hatred are well dished out showing every aspect of her concern for this beat up world, and her voice wraps the entire song into a tight nutshell. Her teaching styles for both keyboards & vocals make me feel at home. Singing the hardest parts of a song over and over while my voice cracked like ice taught me how to breathe correctly when not only singing, but also when I have anxiety attacks, panic attacks, or simply stress. As an Uptown Music Collective student, my stress has reduced during long rehearsals just by breathing with my diaphragm. And here’s to sitting through those difficult Hiatus Kaiyote songs that I personally picked to cover on keys while we would listen and hunt for sheet music. If you want to hear the song “Bleeding Hearts”, or if you want to check out the rest of my Song of the Weeks, visit my blog site: www.mellowickdiaries.wordpress.com and share it around on all of your social media outlets. Also, follow/ like this wonderful goddess on Facebook (@kimberlyadairmusic), Twitter (@ kimadairmusic), and Instagram (kimberlyadairmusic). Have recommendations for the next Song of the Week? T

he Pine Street underpass which permits pedestrian traffic under the Pennsylvania Railroad, has been closed temporarily, City Councilman Chester D. Wolfe, director of public safety, said yesterday. Built in 1898, the tunnel is one of the city’s landmarks. Mr. Wolfe citing the poor and unhealthy condition of the underpass as the reason for closing the structure to public use, revealed that city council will meet soon to discuss the future of the underground walkway. At the present time the lighting system of the duct is completely disabled and will need extensive repairs before being put back into operation, Mr. Wolfe explained. The wire supplying power to the light fixtures within the underpass is broken on the outside of the underpass. To repair the system, concrete over the underground wire will have to be ripped up and later replaced, the public safety director said. In addition to the lighting system, other faults noted in the bypass include: 1. The tile, which is now bulging away from

the walls. 2. The poor conditions of the steps leading into the tunnel. 3. The leaks, which permit water to seep into the tunnel and 4. The offensive odor, which prevails throughout. Several persons have suffered minor injuries in falls within the tunnel in recent years, Mr. Wolfe said. He also noted with the lack of lights and the condition of the sidewalk more accidents of that type will occur. To continue its use without lighting would encourage the molesting of pedestrians during the night hours the councilman explained in listing reasons for the closing of the structure. A stagnant smell permeates the structure, the councilman said and that is a major reason why many citizens prefer to wait for trains to pass rather than use the underpass. Repairing the tunnel will be a major operation, not only from a standpoint of repairs, but also the cost, Mr. Wolfe commented. Recently, Mr. Wolfe issued a public warning that any person caught breaking the lights in the tunnel and doing any other damage to the structure will be prosecuted.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “Black Klansman: A Memoir” by Ron Stallworth c.2018, Flatiron Books $25.99 / $33.99 Canada 208 pages

Y

ou want no part of that. In fact, the farther away you are from whatever-it-is, the happier you’ll be. Nope, some things are not your friend. Some things are not good for you at all. And as you’ll

see in the new book “Black Klansman: A Memoir” by Ron Stallworth, some people can’t resist some things like that. He saw the ad during an idle scan of the local Colorado Springs newspapers: “Ku Klux Klan, For Information Contact….” As the department’s first black detective, Ron Stallworth thought it might be interesting to see what would come from answering that ad. Figuring on a few pamphlets, maybe a brochure or leaflet, he wrote a note to the P.O. Box, using his real name and asking for

promised information. To this day, he’s still not sure why he used his name, and not one of his undercover aliases. On November 1, 1978, he received a call on the department’s undercover line. The caller identified himself as a “local organizer” of the Ku Klux Klan who was trying to raise membership there in Colorado Springs. He asked Stallworth several questions, then invited him to meet in person; they agreed upon a time and, once they hung up, Stallworth swung into action. He asked for permission to proceed and for a colleague’s help, but was denied; sure that this could be a major matter, he went to higher authorities. He already had in mind a sharp colleague who was white and could “be” Stallworth when Stallworth needed to attend Klan events… because the real Ron Stallworth, remember, is a black man. For the next ten weeks or so, Stallworth and his co-detective, Chuck, worked their way into and through the Klan. They attended rallies and meetings, thwarted cross-burnings, and Stallworth spoke many times with Grand Wizard David Duke. There was certainly danger in what he’d done but mostly, because of the amateurishness

of the organization he’d infiltrated and the mistaken tenants its leaders held, it was a lesson in absurdity. “It was,” says Stallworth, “as if Dennis the Menace were running a hate group.” And that pretty much sums up what you’re going to find inside “Black Klansman”: a little danger, a lot of audacity, and plenty of intendedunintended laughs. Even so, this book isn’t a comedy. The seriousness of what author Ron Stallworth did becomes apparent as he writes about hate groups in 1978 Colorado which, presumably, could be any state: the tentacles of those organizations reached far and were verging on joining forces when his investigation was shut down. There were obviously different methods of word-spreading forty years ago, but in today’s world of internet and cell phone, readers can easily conclude chilling parallels. This is in the forefront of the story, but there’s no denying the humor here, too. It’s going to make for a great movie this August. Before you see the movie, be sure you’ve read “Black Klansman” first. You’ll want the back-story. You’ll want the nuances. You’ll want every part of this book.

his holiday season as parties, activities, and events start filling the calendar, you may have your festive outfits all planned, purchased, and pressed, but what about your makeup? Too often, a great look will fizzle or sizzle depending on the head-styling (i.e. hair and makeup). While you may have your day-to-day beauty routine down pat, the Christmas season is a great time to bust out some unexpected color and sparkle. If you haven’t thought about how to

Outfits, Not Just Clothes… “dress your face” for the holidays, consider these potential beauty looks. Glitter for grown-ups. Yes, such a thing exists, and can look quite chic when used with a deft hand, as opposed to just smearing it on in the car on the way to a middle school dance. By adding a dab of glitter primer before applying a bit of sparkle to the center of your eyelid and inner corner, you’ll have a subtle shine to enhance your holiday look. Or, if you want to throw subtlety out of the window and embrace all

things glitter, don’t just stop at your eyes. Think sparkle nail polish, glitter highlighter, or even glittery lip gloss. Glitter is a great way to incorporate texture into your holiday beauty look, but keep the colors dark yet vibrant for a Bernadette Ulsamer seasonally appropriate glitter bomb. Oh Holy Metallic Night. You can also step up your makeup game this season with metallic cosmetics, in shades like champagne, sliver, gunmetal, bronze, and beyond. Add a pop of gold in the center of your eyelid and inner corners, finish with a touch of brown shadow along the lash line, and sweep on a bit of bronzer for a warm glow that reflects your holiday spirit. If you are more into edgy glamour for your Christmas/New Year celebrations, try a silver accent, like a winged eye with a metallic pencil. Go over it with a liquid silver eyeliner for an unexpectedly festive face. And don’t feel that you have to stick to one shade of metallic. Mix up those metals, like a golden shadow with copper eyeliner, or inky liquid liner with a metallic finish and purple-metallic lid for a cocktail party ready look! Keep it classic. If you’re more of a

mascara and go girl, show your holiday spirit through your smile with your lipstick. Red is the obvious choice for this time of year. Of course, a bold red lip is a classic and will definitely add a pop of color and posh to whatever you wear. However, richer berry shades, like plum and raspberry, are popular this season and feel extra special for the holidays. For ladies on the pale side with cool undertones, like myself, go with a warmer shade of lipstick. On the flip side, women with darker skin and warm undertones, try a cooler tint. The idea is to find a shade that stands out for a perfect holiday punch. No matter which hue you choose, keep it matte for daytime gatherings and go shiny at nighttime soirees. Even if you don’t go for a full face of makeup this holiday season, you can still embrace vibrant color, sparkle, and bring a bit of playfulness into your beauty routine. A dab here and there can make all of the difference. For myself, as a working mother of two small girls, I’m leaning more into holiday beauty and going with a simplistic style outfitwise for the upcoming festivities. An all-black ensemble may seem dull, but a bit of sparkle, some winged eyeliner, and a pop of color lipstick can elevate my black sweater dress from humbug to Happy Holidays!

I

was sorry to hear that Gerry Ayers passed away so soon after writing his last column. It reminds me of Charles Schultz and his last “Peanuts” column. Mr. Schultz, among other things, was a sports fan. He particularly liked iceskating and hockey, starting, later in life, an over-75 hockey league! All the more a feat because he lived in sunny California! No doubt Gerry and Charles are swapping tales right now. I’m sure he also has some favorite cars that he will discuss with Gerry. One of Gerry’s last requests to us was that we think. I will do what I can to honor Gerry’s wish. A bit about me and then we’ll move on… I grew up on a “micro” — by today’s standards – Midwest dairy farm. Dad was an east coast big city boy and Mom was a local farm girl who was her class valedictorian. They met at the Fort Wayne, Indiana, USO club after WW2 (Mom’s roommate and friend, Marge, wanted her to accompany her. Mom agreed to go just once!) She said Dad was polite

and nice, and they exchanged postal mail addresses. (No texting in those days!!) Dad didn’t want to go back to city living and decided to farm. From some of Mom’s stories (always told in love) at times it was a bit like the “Green Acres” TV show. Dad went to agriculture classes. Whatever he did, he gave it his all and became a successful farmer. A proud moment for Dad was when the local seed corn dealer asked if he could put a sign up showing it was his company who provided the seed for the crop. Our house had many books because two of my grandparents were teachers, another a principal and one a pastor of a large church with a weekly radio show. I spent many hours on small tractors (compared to today’s behemoths), such as a 9N Ford, helping Dad with planting, cultivating, and harvesting various crops including hay baling (can’t forget that!!). Life was straightforward. Whatever was planted came up as long as all went well with proper soil and moisture levels throughout the growing season.

Holiday Greetings!

Holidays and the end of the year are times for families and for giving thanks. Greevy and Shoemaker would like to thank all of our clients for the faith they have shown in us over the past year. It is also time to evaluate current circumstances and plan for the upcoming year. It is the time when families meet and sometimes realize Mom and Dad aren’t as self-sufficient as they once were. Maybe it’s time to consider options for their personal and financial well-being. And it’s also a good time for a review of the essential documents – will, powerof-attorney and living will that are needed when a patient is admitted to a nursing home. Please be assured the attorneys at Greevy and Shoemaker are both at your service to provide experienced and expert advice to and for our elderly clients. And as always, the first consultation is free.

INTERESTING Put corn down in the soil, and corn came up, the exact same hybrid that was purchased from the dealer. Although I never hesitated to help out, I must admit that rainy days were always a delight. I could read and read some more. Some days Dad and I would go to the public library and take out more books. In 11th grade, I was taught that all life was the result of random chances and coincidences and that we were on a pointless magic carpet ride of sorts

through life. Unfortunately, those lessons made me question what the meaning of life was if indeed there was any since it was all just happenstance. Years later Mom asked what happened to me in high school. She said that it seemed a “dark cloud” came over me. Until then I felt I could never tell her or Dad what it was. Those years are behind me, and life indeed goes on. I used to regret those “lost years,” but we must move on, help others. Life is not just “about me.”

On to the amazing… Water, I first came to appreciate it because of the rainy days. How I loved hearing the thunder claps in the distance!! I soon learned that too little or too much rain, however, was a problem. Too little and crops would yield poorly. Too much gave local flooding, drowned out areas in fields and muddy milk cows. But the right amount of water mixed in the right cow, the one with the XX chromosome, along with hay and grain gives milk – now that’s amazing!! Water is the only material that is in

all three states of solid, liquid and gas at temperatures naturally found on earth. Water expands and floats when it freezes. If it sunk when freezing, our earth would be an ice planet with, perhaps, a few inches of water on top of ice in the summer months. If water didn’t evaporate, there wouldn’t be rain. All the landmasses would be dry, totally. Pretty amazing for something so “simple.” By the way, it’s tragic it wasn’t possible to apply enough water at the right time to Charles Schultz’s house in California last year. It burned up in a forest fire.

Director of Little League Museum Describes His Encounter With George H.W. Bush By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

ance Van Auken, Director of the World of Little League Peter J. McGovern Museum has his own fond memories of the late 41st President of the United States, George H.W. Bush, who died on November 30 at the age of 94. Van Auken was tasked by Steve Keener, President and CEO of Little League International Inc., with coordinating with

the White House of President George W. Bush, son of President George H.W. Bush, the logistics of the holding of the T-Ball Games on the South Lawn of the White House from 2001 to 2008. It was during the setting up of one of these games that Van Auken had his encounter with “41,” as he was fondly known. He (Van Auken) said he has wonderful memories of this encounter and details it here in his own words. “In 2001, I was on the South Lawn of

the White House overseeing the setup of a Tee Ball field. I’d heard that President George H.W. Bush was visiting his son, the current President. We were told he might make his way down to the little area near a giant Bald Cypress where, in a few days, the first Tee Ball on the South Lawn game would be played. We gained permission from the White House Counsel to print the Little League logo, and the Presidential Seal, on some baseballs that were to be signed by President Bush before the game. There were about 48 of them ... quite unique in design. All of our guests (myself and my daughter, Sarah included), along with the players, were to receive one ball. I had brought the balls with me so that the current President could sign them before the game scheduled for the weekend. We’re not permitted to request autographs in public, and I don’t like to do it in most cases anyway. But when President Bush came around to the field, it was basically just him and me standing there. I asked if he would sign a ball for me, and one for my daughter. Of course, he did. But just as he was about to autograph the ball, he asked, “Is my son going to sign this, too?” “Yes sir, Mr. President,” I said. “Well, I better not sign the sweet spot. Forty-three will probably fine me.” We laughed. He signed both balls, one of which is in a photo. But the rest of the balls never made it to the weekend’s game. The reason all of

the balls were destroyed is too long a story to tell here, but they were...all except the couple of baseballs President George H.W. Bush signed that day. Sarah did get her baseball signed later in the week by “Forty-Three” ... and it is the only one like it on the planet. It carries the autographs of two Presidents (the son did sign on the sweet spot), the Little League logo, and the Presidential Seal. The few minutes I got to spend alone with President George H.W. Bush on the South Lawn of the White House were almost surreal. He was not just genial, but genuinely friendly, as we talked about baseball, and the field that was being built. In just a few moments, he made me feel less nervous than I should have been. He was also taller than he seemed on television. In the coming years, I would get a chance to meet and speak with his lovely wife Barbara, two of his sons, and his daughter-in-law Laura. All of them were just as friendly as the Patriarch. They also surrounded themselves with dedicated, hard-working people who loved their country, and loved working at the White House — all the ones I met anyway. But I’ll never forget the sweet man who chatted about baseball with me that day - a man who was a genuine hero to me and my family in many ways. I hope he is having a joyous reunion with Mrs. Bush and their daughter Robin in Paradise.”

County Hall Corner: A Meeting Minus One By Larry Stout

W

hen I attend the County Commissioners Meetings, I see people from time to time that know me, and they ask, “Larry, why are you here?” My standard reply is, “I cover the county for Webb Weekly and write a column called, ‘County Hall Corner.’” Often people apologize that they read the column but miss the byline. I tell them that there is no need to apologize; the important thing is that they read it. Yet now that they have a face to the column, they sometimes ask how I choose the subjects

that I write on. This is why I answer the first question so carefully, and state that I “cover” the county for Webb Weekly. In one sense I am a reporter, but in another sense, I am not. When I studied journalism in college, I was taught that a good reporter should try to put the who, what, where, and when of the subject in the very first sentence of an article. But as a columnist, I am more interested in the hidden questions — what is behind the who, what, where, and when. To give an example, at the work session of the County Commissioners on Tuesday, November 27th, Commissioners Tony Mussare PA-046995

SINCE 1946

A COMPANY YOU CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH!

and Rick Mirabito were in attendance. From a reporter perspective, I would be focused on the issues that would be discussed and any resolutions that might be reached. But from a columnist standpoint, I was much more intrigued on what dynamics would play out in the absence of Commissioner McKernan. After attending some 200 county meetings of this board, I have observed that Tony Mussare and Rick Mirabito agree on probably at least 90 percent on the issues, but the 10 percent they disagree on, they disagree quite strongly and have no qualms about stating so. Jack McKernan in his role of chairman often plays the part of referee when the action starts heating up. For much of the meeting, the two commissioners discussed and reviewed a myriad of issues ranging from contracts necessary for the operation of the County Landfill, approval of increases to the employee pension plan, upgrading hardware necessary for information storage, and matters relating to the office of public defender. They even had to deal with difficult questions during the “public comments” segment on budget cuts to the Lycoming County Historical Society. Any neutral observer would probably have noted that through all these agenda items and Q/A, the two men were both keen to understand all the pros and cons, balancing a strong conscious need to cut costs against the necessity of maintaining needed programs and services. The two commissioners know their stuff and work hard to show they are looking for the best solutions to these difficult problems. But my instincts told me that trouble was brewing, it was just a matter of time. Two

particular issues almost guarantee the sparks to start flying between these two commissioners, and those are the issues of the hotel tax funds and White Deer Golf Course. Sure enough, the meeting was almost over, and these two matters came up. The hotel tax somehow weaved in from the question about the budget cuts, and the golf course arose when an employee was present and asked if any decisions had been made about it. What started as each commissioner stating their positions descended into a less than friendly tete-a-tete between them. At this point, Referee Jack would normally step in, but in his absence, the two were free to duke it out. However, the hour was late, and it was obvious there were other engagements that both men had to attend, so an uneasy truce was declared and the meeting was adjourned. Yes, pension plans, the county landfill, and the public defender’s office are all worthy of attention and a good columnist tries to touch on such issues from time to time, but give me a good old scuffle once in a while to keep things interesting. We missed you, Jack, but not too much.

Drive-Thru. No Thanks.

T

here are great multitudes of things my husband refuses to do based on what I assume are a warped set of principles. To name a few: He won’t put up a Christmas tree on or before Thanksgiving, he won’t arrange the bills in his wallet in any semblance of order, and he won’t pull up to a drive-thru window to save himself. I can identify somewhat with

the first refusal, since it doesn’t make much sense to celebrate more than one holiday at a time. Although, judging by the profusion of Yuletide merchandise jammed on store shelves shortly after Labor Day, it would seem as though a good portion of society thinks that’s perfectly fine. Not me, however. I just can’t bring myself to haul a wreath or anything Christmas-y out of the attic

before I’ve even boxed up the Halloween bats. As for my husband’s second refusal, by contrast, I cannot condone such egregious behavior. Money should be organized according to denomination — and Melinda in a perfect world, right Wentzel side up and all facing the same direction. There are times while we stand together in a checkout line and I roll my eyes as I watch him sift through crumpled wads of

cash, dropping some on the floor in the process. Naturally, I have to ask myself who he is and why he acts that way. I can’t even begin to understand what sort of logic goes into decision-making like that. Just knowing that his pockets are filled with completely disordered clumps of money makes my head hurt. With respect to my husband’s third refusal, I find the man to be a freak of nature — a spectacle that one might be inclined to look upon with both awe and fascination. It doesn’t seem to matter if it’s a fast food restaurant, convenience store or bank. His reaction is always the

of yelling into a black box that may or may not result in a screw up of the order/ transaction and subsequently pulling ahead to pay for said order where there is always the potential for dropping money beneath the car seat or onto the ground before it gets into the right hands. He has a point, I suppose; however, I’m inclined to believe none of that will happen. I honestly don’t know why it bothers him so. It would seem that he could just reach into his pocket and hand the attendant a fistful of bills. Protocol be damned. (See paragraph two related to his monetary habits). Apparently, he

prefers to go inside the establishment and engage with people face to face, which isn’t a bad thing per se. I just don’t understand why he is so adamant about it. Nor can I relate to the anxiety he ostensibly feels whenever he must produce the appropriate amount of cash within a short window of time. All of the attendants I’ve ever encountered have been ridiculously patient and eager to help — even if the money in question is embarrassingly disordered. So imagine my surprise when, in perhaps a weak moment, my husband obliged my hackneyed request to use

the drive-thru at Starbucks. Naturally, I was beyond shocked and felt compelled to whip out my iPhone to capture the momentous event on camera. “Why are you taking a picture?! That’s absurd,” he chided. “I want to preserve the moment for posterity.” I’m no dummy. I knew my kids wouldn’t believe me and that I would need proof. The Roving Sportsman… Prime Time for Coyotes By Jon Pries

W

hile the late archery deer season and flintlock deer season (December 26 to January 12, 2019) are still ahead for the hearty hunters who have not yet filled their tags and will brave the winter chill, for most of us, the deer season is over. Fear not, as there is still an exciting opportunity to spend time afield over the winter months in pursuit of one of our most prolific furbearers — the wily coyote. Here are some factors to keep in mind as you consider hunting coyotes in our state: Throughout Pennsylvania, coyotes can be hunted with either a hunting or furtaker license. There is no limit, and there is no closed season, with some exceptions during big game seasons. Outside of the big game seasons, coyotes may be taken without wearing any orange and can be hunted any hour — day or night. Coyotes are one of the species that can be hunted by a youth under the Mentored Youth Hunting Program. Any natural or manmade nonliving bait can be used to attract coyotes for hunting or trapping. It is unlawful to bait a trap with meat, animal products or their facsimiles if the bait is visible from the air. When hunting coyotes, however, one may hunt over bait visible from the air. Coyotes can be hunted seven

days per week — yes, even on Sundays! Semiautomatic and manually operated rifles, manually operated handguns of any caliber, manual or semiautomatic shotguns and bows and crossbows can be used. If using a shotgun, it is not permissible to use shot larger than number 4 buckshot. It is permissible to used gun-mounted lights that do not project a laser-light beam. Dogs are permitted for hunting coyotes. Yes, there are a lot of things to keep in mind when making sure you are complying with the regulations, but fortunately, most of it is common sense and easy to understand and follow. While black bears are the most prolific predator of whitetail fawns, coyotes certainly take their fair share of fawns as well. They can also be responsible for the occasional destroying of a clutch of turkey or grouse eggs. They are scavengers that will feed on road-killed game, remains from field dressing a deer, or even a deer carcass that they may come across. While their main diet is rodents and rabbits, they will eat almost anything, including insects and fruit, and, yes, even pet food when they can find it! They may even be attracted to bird feeders since mice and squirrels will hang out around the feeders. Taking the feeders down for a couple of weeks will encourage a coyote to move on. With their natural food sources being in

during the winter can be very productive. Whether you are hunting coyotes over bait such as a road-killed deer — particularly during the nighttime hours — or calling them, which can be very effective any time of the day, these next few months should produce the most opportunities for success. Coyote hunting can provide some great hunting opportunities, and, as always, would allow a great chance to introduce a new hunter to the outdoors. While the action can be fast and furious, there will be lots of time just to share time together discussing what makes our love of hunting so important and passing on this tradition so critical to its future.

shorter supply during the winter weather, coyotes will be on the move — traveling greater distances and moving more throughout the nighttime and daylight hours in search of food. During the winter months, young coyotes begin to break away from the family unit, leaving their parents in search of a spot where they can establish their own homes and hunting territory. Additionally, January is the start of the breeding season, and mature coyotes will be more mobile as they search for a mate. All of these conditions mean that the coyotes will be much more active and more visible as they increase their traveling activity over the coming months. With all of this in mind, hunting coyotes

It’s not uncommon to follow the behavior and patterns of any given deer with many being given names like “old drop-tine” or “high-rack.” Often hunters will zero in on that big ole buck they’ve been watching in their game camera for the past couple of months letting other smaller bucks go. Obviously, these changes do not necessarily apply to all deer hunters, or maybe only some of the changes apply depending on whether you hunt private or public land. One thing that hasn’t changed though is that moment when you pull the trigger on a nice buck and before you know it you’re grabbing your RD to take photos to show all your friends. Oh yeah, I forgot — you don’t have to wait for the film to be developed and everybody can see your success immediately.

Everyone who checks their buck into the Webb Weekly Big Buck Contest can register to win a Remington 783 .270 with 3-9x 40mm scope, complete with gun case, scope caps, sling and box of ammo!

“One reason is people don’t want to take the level of abuse that sometimes comes with officiating. You have to have thick skin to do this. This is the one job you are expected to be perfect from day one and get better from there. This is the human element and officials are going to miss plays. That happens. But I don’t think there are many parents, fans, coaches and players who realize how hard the job really is unless you go out there and do it. There aren’t many people who can take that kind of abuse. It happens in the heat of the moment, and I realize that. Often after a game is over people will come up and apologize and many others won’t. “Another thing, especially at the high school level, is the travel that is involved, the time that it takes and many people working regular jobs can’t get that time off.” As for what he would say to young people considering umpiring? “Do it. Absolutely do it. It is a little nerveracking at first, but once you get your wits behind you and get to understand the basic mechanics, your muscle memory will kick into effect, and it will be just like riding a bike. You will always learn something new every game that you do because baseball and softball will always have that one play that you have never seen before.” As Bryce Brewer counts down the days until beginning his educational career path, it will be the baseball rulebook, not algebra or chemistry that he will be studying. “There are not a lot of people that want to grow up and be an official, but it is something I love to do. Every year from April through September I spend most of my time on ball fields umpiring. I am really looking forward to getting down to Florida.”

make it through the fifth week are placed into MLB’s minor league system. Overall about 70% of the students get placed in the professional league or the NCAA Academy leading to opportunities in Division I, II or III college baseball. There have been many umpires who have worked their way into professional baseball via that avenue. “I’ve read a lot about the school, and all the alumni that have gone there and everyone talks about how great the experience was,” Brewer said. “Even if you don’t make it into the professional leagues, you are taught well, and you learn everything you’ve ever dreamed of about becoming an umpire. I look at it this way, if I make it to the professional level that would be awesome. That would be a dream come true. But, if I don’t, I will be able to hone my skills and get my game to a higher level to do high school and college games and work myself up through the ranks.” While admitting he hasn’t been overly influenced by any one individual, Brewer has closely followed the careers of two MLB arbiters. “There hasn’t been any one person that I’ve tried to be like, but there are umpires in Major League Baseball that I’ve watched closely. One is John Tumpane, one of MLB’s newest umpires known for his rescue of a woman trying to jump off the Roberto Clemente Bridge in Pittsburgh in 2017. Another is Greg Gibson, who was the home plate umpire in 2008 for the first game using instant replay. I’ve watched their charisma on the field, their character and the way they conduct themselves and it gives me inspiration to be like them someday.” With area umpiring chapters facing declining memberships, Brewer was asked his thoughts as to the reasons why.

he fall leaves and cool temperatures are giving way to empty trees and temperatures that force most people to rethink trips outside. The winter season is officially upon us, which means the long drives, crafty moves on the soccer pitch, and shifty shots on the tennis court will be moved to the back until next year. Now, we move to the hardwood and the water of the indoor pools as the season kicks off with Invitationals and Tip-off tournaments.

Last year was a special season for Loyalsock on both the girls’ and boys’ sides of the basketball program. The season started out strong as the Lancers defeated North Penn-Mansfield and Wellsboro to claim the school’s Tipoff tournament. The Lancers would go on to win the next six games before finally dropping one at State College against Germantown Academy. It was an outstanding start to a season that would feature a 1,000-point scorer and Ron “CI” Insinger becoming the winningest coach in the State’s history.

in Bucknell. Coleman was outstanding throughout the year and lives for the moments like the State meet. He’s polished and calm in the water, but vocal and supportive for fellow competitors. He cheered his teammates on throughout the meet, but he was also there to help out fellow District 4 swimmers during the two-day event. He was there to give advice on the pool and water. He jumped up and down as fellow District 4 swimmers made their best efforts at the season’s biggest meet. One moment that stuck out for Coleman was during the 500 free when he helped out Shamokin’s Abby Doss with her laps in the event. The last thing a swimmer competing in the 500 free wants is to be forced to keep track of laps. The 500 is a grueling race and Coleman was there to support Doss as she eventually captured her second consecutive medal. That selfless act was the biggest takeaway from the meet. Coleman left with two medals, but he supported his fellow swimmers and showed exactly what type of guy he is. These are just a few things to keep an eye on as we progress throughout the winter season. Every player, every team, and every coach has a story, but it’s the ones most don’t see that have the biggest impacts. Keep an eye out for these little moments that make big impacts.

As good as those two moments were, especially since they happened on the same day, it might not even have been the highest moment of the season. In a game that many in the area thought would be the end of the road Brett for Loyalsock, it endCrossley ed up being one of the highlights of the program. Insinger showed his coaching abilities, and the kids performed well as Loyalsock defeated District 1 powerhouse Valley Forge Military Academy 54-50. There will be plenty more to play for this year as the Lancers open up the season with another Tip-off tournament. Gerald Ross notched his 1,000th career point last year and will be hoping to add to those totals. Connor Watkins, after dealing with a devastating injury in football, will be back along with a group of solid players who have spent a year in the program. Loyalsock will surely have another outstanding season. As for the winter season’s other sports, there will be plenty to follow. One athlete in particular that will be fun to follow will be Lewisburg’s Christian Coleman, who placed in both the 200 IM and the 100 free during the state meet

Pappy’s Christmas Trees TAG-CUT

I am so excited with my new hearing aids! I would say they are 100 percent better than my old ones. They are comfortable and they don’t fall out. My old hearing aids were always falling out. My neighbors are very pleased with the television volume. I think a lot of Artisan Hearing Technologies and Jennifer. She is not pushy and she explains everything so I can understand it. I wear my hearing aids everywhere! - Jerry Ohnmeiss
