From the Editor…

Happy New Year!

T

his is always one of my favorite weeks of the year at Webb Weekly. Not only because I get to stretch my legs (and word count) on page 2, but because of WHY. Though he wouldn’t want me to tell you, throughout the year Jimmy does a lot for our community. Be it through charities, sporting events, or other sneaky ways, Jimmy helps a lot of people in the course of a year. And I don’t think he gets enough ‘thank yous’ for it. So, before we get to what’s happening in this issue, I want to say thank you to Jimmy. For all that you do and all the people that you do it for, please know that your efforts are seen and appreciated. For the past couple of years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick something that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space or a combination of both. As you can see on the cover, we have a wide variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read through this issue, but here is a quick rundown:

The Central PA Food Bank – Committed to solving hunger in Central PA by 2025. The Ronald McDonald House in Danville – Ronald McDonald House of Danville, Inc. shall provide compassionate, temporary, convenient, subsidized housing and related programs for childhood cancer and other patients and families associated with treatment at area medical facilities. Lycoming Animal Protection Society (LAPS) – Provides care and adoption services for many homeless cats and kittens at its no-kill shelter. West End Christian Community Center – The West End Christian Community Center (WECCC) works in covenant with Christ to embrace and unify all communities with His love by responding to the spiritual, physical, emotional, and social needs of all those they serve. Multiple Sclerosis Society – Helping people affected by MS to live their best lives as they stop MS in its tracks, restore what has been lost and end MS forever. Family Promise of Lycoming County – Family Promise of Lycoming County empowers families to become and remain self sufficient by breaking the cycle of homelessness, provides com-

munity awareness and advocacy, and creates mission opportunities for individuals and faith based communities. YWCA – The YWCA is dedicated to empowering women, eliminating racism, and promoting peace, justice, freedom Steph Nordstrom and dignity for all. Each of these charities means something to the employee that sponsored them. They are all amazing local organizations that are doing what they can to help in our area. So thank you again, Jimmy. Doing things like this makes me so proud to be a Webb Weekly employee. I hope that as you read through the ads/editorials about these charities, you will consider adding them to your 2019 donation lists if you are able. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! Do you have your resolutions ready to go? Listen, at the time I’m writing this, I don’t even have my Christmas stuff finished, let alone starting on New Year’s resolutions. Maybe I’ll have something for you next week! Or April. Are mid-year resolutions a thing? Maybe something for 2020? I do have an update on last year’s

resolutions. Last year I mentioned wanting to, “Eat better, move more, stress less.” I did none of these. I generally like to eat terrible food and nap as much as possible, so these were pretty unattainable goals to begin with. However, I also noted that I wanted to get and keep a houseplant alive, and I actually have good news on that front. I got a Snake Plant last year, and I am happy to report that it is still happy, healthy and alive. As long as I remember to dump a glass of water in it every couple of weeks, it seems to be happy! So at least the resolution train wasn’t a total derailment! Out and about, or in with friends or family, no matter how you plan to ring in the New Year, please be safe. Holidays like New Year’s have a way of bringing out the worst in people, so in addition to taking care of yourself, keep an eye on those around you. Not only for your safety, but also for theirs. It’s easy to think that it isn’t your responsibility to ‘babysit’ others, but wouldn’t it be worth it if it saves their life or someone else’s? If you are heading out for the evening, please — please — make sure you don’t drink and drive. Download the Uber or Lyft apps before you head out so you can get a safe ride home. Remember even surge pricing is cheaper than fines or the risk of drinking and driving. Be safe y’all!

T

he turn of one year to another year always is a time of transition and change and very often some events of great importance, and that transition from 1958 to 1959 60 years ago was no exception. In the days leading up to the beginning of the New Year, the Williamsport City Council approved a 1959 city budget of $1,471,819 with the tax millage remaining the same for 1959 as it was for 1958 — 14.75 mills. Thomas Levering was mayor of Williamsport and was preparing for a re-election campaign in 1959, in which he was ultimately successful. In sports, shortly before the beginning of the New Year, what was regarded as the “greatest football game ever played” took place when the Baltimore Colts prevailed over the New York Giants, 23-17, in the first sudden-death overtime playoff game. It ended when the Colts’ Alan Ameche crashed in for the winning touchdown from about the five-yard line. Locally, the Williamsport Billies professional basketball team was in the middle of a bad season they would go 9-19, despite having such good players as Jack Molinas, Julius McCoy, and Jesse Arnelle.

The first three New Year’s babies were born to Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Waltz, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Dills and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Frahn Jr. In international and national news, Fidel Castro and his rebels triumphantly marched in Havana, as the previous dictator, Fulgencio Batista fled the country. Dwight Eisenhower was the reassuring, grandfatherly presence in the White House and David Lawrence was about to begin his term as Governor of Pennsylvania. The weather locally on that New Year’s was a mixture of snow, sleet, and freezing rain, with a high temperature of 39 degrees and a low of 23 degrees. The nasty weather was probably responsible for the 13 traffic accidents that happened locally; fortunately, none resulted in serious injury. The first fire of the New Year locally, happened at the Stewart Artificial Ice Plant at 739 First Street, but it was not a serious fire and resulted in little damage. City police reported that there were five traffic fatalities in the city during 1958, the most since 1953, which also had five deaths. This is just a little snapshot of what was going on 60 years ago during New Year’s 1959.

In college football bowl games played on New Year’s Day, the LSU Tigers clinched the national championship with a 7-0 win over a stubborn Clemson team in the Sugar Bowl. The Iowa Hawkeyes defeated California 38-12 in the Rose Bowl. Oklahoma defeated Syracuse, featuring Ernie Davis, 21-6 in the Cotton Bowl and the Air Force played TCU to a scoreless tie in what was regarded as an upset in the Orange Bowl. At the movies locally, at the Rialto was “Gigi,” starring Leslie Caron, Maurice Chevalier, and Louis Jourdan. “The Girl in the Bikini,” starring Brigit Bardot was featured at the Keystone, and the Capitol was Jerry Lewis starring in “The Geisha Boy.” The top five hits on the Hit Parade that New Years were at Number One, “The Chipmunk Song” with Alvin and the Chipmunks. 2. “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” by the Platters. 3. “Tom Dooley” by the Kingston Trio. 4. “To Know Him Is To Love Him” by the Teddy Bears and 5. “One Night” by Elvis Presley. This Year’s LION: The Wonder Wife - Debbie Stout By Larry Stout

T

he Leaders in Our Neighborhood articles have not been as frequent in 2018 as in previous years, largely because of increased responsibilities in other areas (see “County Hall Corner”), but I felt a year-end feature was called for. And in keeping with the end of year mood, it seemed appropriate to announce my choice for LION of the Year. This per-

son is the most extraordinary person I have ever known — my wife, Debbie Stout. Now, I am sure that there might be some who might suggest there is a hint of partiality in my selection, so please bear with me as I justify this honor that I wish to bestow upon her. Let us start with her profession of nursing. Debbie has worked as a registered nurse since the age of 20, after spending her teenage years as a candy striper and then a nurs-

es aide. She will retire next year after 45 years in the profession. In the course of those decades, Debbie has worked in every field of medicine — from ER, OB, surgery, pediatrics, med/surg, hospice, and now for the past twelve years as a Home Care Nurse for Geisinger Home Health. In all this time, she has resisted going into management because of her dedication to patient care. Even during our time on the mission field in the 1990s-2000s, she worked to found a children’s rehabilitation center for children with cerebral palsy that became a model for the former Soviet Union.

Debbie’s skills were sought after when the US Embassy opened in Riga, Latvia, and she earned her a Presidential Citation from President Bush for her work there. Debbie and I raised three extraordinary children, and when they were grown and departed while we were

she can to bless others. Her only complaint is that she wishes she could do more. But there is more — her concern for military veterans, for example. The US Marine guards at the US Embassy in Riga almost considered her a mother; she got so attached to them. Almost all were looking forward to serving in Iraq after their embassy duties were fulfilled, and Debbie would hug each one when they were leaving and make them promise they would not get injured. Since our return to the States, she has looked for ways of helping veterans. In the past few years, she and another woman from church, Lyn Echols, have worked tirelessly to help area combat vets who suffer from PTSD find the help they need. For all this and much, much more, Debbie deserves recognition. But perhaps she deserves the highest praise simply for putting up with me as a husband for the past 44 years. I sincerely doubt any other woman on the planet could have handled the wild ride that I have put her through for going on half a century. She is truly a Leader in Our Neighborhood — and the best friend and life companion any person could ever imagine.

living in Latvia, her eye lighted on an orphan 9-year-old Russian girl named Olya. I knew what she was thinking and tried to talk her out of it, but eventually, I yielded. Since that time, Olya has become so much a part of our family, that some twenty years on I now say that I have four children, one is adopted, but I can’t remember which one. Debbie would love to spend time with her nine grandchildren, but unfortunately, they are scattered all over the United States, so six years ago she created a special event just for them. It is called Stout Summer Camp, and she spends the entire year planning and designing a special event during the Fourth of July holiday for the grandkids with a spiritual theme for them to learn but also with games and activities designed exactly toward their interests. Debbie takes being a grandmother to a whole new level. She is also a tireless volunteer for activities with our home church, Citychurch in Williamsport. She teaches Sunday School, is a core member of the Prayer Team, teaches a ladies Bible study, counsels young women with problems as needed, bakes cookies for the weekly Sunday morning cafe, and in general, does just about anything

Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration TM

Restoration:

Gazette and Bulletin December 26, 1918 Many Saw the Lighted Tree

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

illiamsport’s community Christmas tree celebration Tuesday evening was a great success in spite of the inclement weather. The tree had been repaired and rebuilt; it is now one of the most symmetrical the city has had and the lighting is so perfectly placed that the illumination is splendidly balanced and the effect beautiful. In spite of the rain there was a goodly audience present when Mayor Hoagland, at the request of the Civic Club’s request, turned on the current and there was a blaze of light through the branches of the big tree that caused the people present to spontaneously break into applause. The exercise opened outside at the tree and moved inside to the big

courtroom. The program opened with a selection by the Repasz Band after which the tree was lit. Mayor Hoagland turned the switch. The invocation was followed by the singing of Christmas carols by the entire assemblage and led by Clyde Harer and the War Singers, in this first Christmas of peace after the war in Europe. Rev. Charles Leonard was the speaker for the evening and addressed an audience, which filled the big courtroom. His subject was “Victory” and attired in his uniform, which he wore a few days ago in France, where he was engaged in YMCA work, he gave such an insight into what the present victory meant that the audience regretted that he did not continue to speak longer. The program closed with the singing of “America” sung by the audience, with the Repasz Band leading.

veterans in our communities. Below is an excerpt of his remarks. “Our veterans are our link to our history. The vets from World War II and Korea – there has never been a generation like them since, and newscaster Tom Brokaw called them the Greatest Generation for a reason. They grew up in the Great Depression, yet possess an uncommon dedication and commitment. They raised the baby boomers, built the interstates, the cars, the houses and the factories. They created the prosperity we enjoy today and make the United States the world’s singular superpower. Those of us from Vietnam, the Cold War, Bosnia, Somalia, the Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan have our own stories – often not shared, and frequently misunderstood, but very much a part of the colorful, diverse tapestry we call America. As veterans, we still have a duty to this country that did not change with our discharge, separation or

assistance programs for veterans in our entire country. And while we are proud of our work, we know there are many more veterans in need.” “Receiving fresh produce and fruit from MilitaryShare at a local VFW has helped me and my family during tough times,” said William J. Birster, Jr., recipient and volunteer at a local MilitaryShare site. “After seeing the program in action, I decided as a veteran I needed to volunteer my own time out of my life to support other fellow veterans.” About the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to reduce hunger in 27 counties across Pennsylvania. By working with more than 1,000 local agencies and partner programs, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank serves nearly 140,000 people in need every month. early 26% of the households receiving food assistance in central Pennsylvania are veterans or active duty service members and their families. This startling statistic led the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank to develop a specific food distribution program, MilitaryShare, to meet their needs. This Mobile Distribution program is confidential and occurs onsite at VFWs, American Legions, armories and other local military organizations. Last year 20,000 families were served through MilitaryShare. In honor of Veteran’s Day 2018, we commemorated this program, one of the first of its kind in the nation, with a flag raising ceremony at our Williamsport Healthy Food Hub, located on Wahoo Drive. Retired Air Force Colonel Dave Hall was our honored guest and gave a stirring speech about the importance of

retirement. Those of us who served must not judge too harshly the generations that follow, and we must continue to recognize them for their own greatness. We must become mentors and teachers. We must explain our history; talk about our experiences; and share our hopes, our dreams and our fears, and we must recognize that they too are a national treasure. To do so will honor the men and women who served.” America’s service men and women do not often see themselves as heroes. It is the rest of America that bestows that deserved title, honoring them for the sacrifice and bravery with which they serve our country. After their service ends, and they return to civilian life, many face challenges, including low incomes. Sadly, many also struggle with hunger. Joe Arthur, Executive Director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, notes, “We started our Military Share program 4 years ago, and already it has grown into one of the largest privately-funded food

House opened a Ronald McDonald Family Room. The Family Room allows families with critical needs to be within steps of their child’s beside. It extends beyond a waiting room- it’s a quiet space built specifically for families with critical children that need a quiet place to go to allowing them to gather their thoughts or meet with family members. The Family Room is a comforting haven for families and is filled with a fully stocked kitchen, living area, quiet room, nap room, two sleeping rooms and full bathroom with shower facilities. How can you help support these families and make a difference? With the increase in demand for our services the Ronald McDonald House could use your help! Volunteers are the heart of the Ronald McDonald House of Danville. There are many opportunities to get involved such as, assisting with the front desk, cooking a meal, cleaning, assisting with a variety of projects, etc. We have something for everyone- individuals, groups, businesses or families. Another great way to get involved is by supporting the House through event sponsorship or sponsoring a family. Nearly 44% of our families are unable to make a suggested $15 per night staythat only covers a portion of the actual cost of $100 per family per night. By sponsoring a family at $100 you are giving a family hope and the gift of togetherness, just like Jenna. magine if there were a place where people understood what you were going through and embraced you at a time when you needed it the most. Imagine if there were a place where it was safe to share your tears and your smiles. Imagine if there were a place that was comforting and felt like home even though you were miles away. Parents of ill children do not have to imagine because such a place does exist and it is called the Ronald McDonald House of Danville. Since 1981 over 390,589 guests have been comforted by this special place and its programs. One mother named Jenna truly understands and appreciates this special place she called home for weeks while her child was hospitalized. Jenna discovered early in her pregnancy that her baby was going to need special care. However, when she was rushed to the hospital at 36 weeks, it was the beginning of a complicated and endless medical journey she hadn’t imagined. Like a port in a storm, the Ronald McDonald House of Danville gave Jenna a safe haven and the assurance that everything was going to be ok. She initially thought the House would be just a warm place to sleep and eat, but it wasn’t long before she realized that it is so much more. No matter what time Jenna walked through the doors, she knew that someone was going to be there to help and to listen. “They made a horrible, scary situation bearable”. She learned that the House offers the support, hope, and caring, which families desperately need during difficult times. This is just one of the many stories that the Ronald McDonald House of Danville has from the thousands of families from all over the world who have stayed at the House. Every day the House assists families helping to eliminate the financial and emotional stress that families

very year there seems to be a must-have Christmas present that everyone is trying to buy. I did a little search and came across a list of the top Christmas gifts going all the way back to the 1920s! Along with the list, I have added a little commentary of my own. While still enjoying your newly opened presents, have some fun reminiscing over the fun gifts of Christmases past: 1929 – The Duncan Yo Yo 1936 – Monopoly Board Game

1943 – The Slinky (For fun it’s a wonderful toy — but I could never get mine to walk down the steps like the kid in the TV commercial.) 1952 – Mr. Potato Head 1959 – Barbie Doll (I’m not sure why my GI Joe never made the cut.) 1975 – Pet Rock (The success of this ridiculous marketing campaign was clearly the result of a nationwide hangover caused by whatever was being smoked in the 1960s.) 1977 – Slime (The 60’s hangover

continued.) 1978 – Hungry, Hungry Hippos 1980 – Rubik’s Cube (My high school buddy could solve it in under 10 seconds. I could solve one side.) 1983 – Cabbage Patch Kids (Go to YouTube and Tim Hartzell search “1983: Demand for Cabbage Patch Kids Causes Chaos”. This can’t be blamed on the 1960s. The 1980s must have been smoking something far worse.) 1989 – Game Boy Nintendo (I was a

youth pastor during this craze. And yes, our youth group bought one.) 1992 – Barney Stuffed Toy (Our first born came along in 1993, just in time for the Barney craze. Great.) 1995 – Beanie Babies (Now with two little boys, we quickly gathered a herd of these cute critters.) 1996 – Tickle Me Elmo (A great way to brighten your day. Don’t believe me? Youtube search “Tickle Me Elmo X TMX Elmo”. Even the dog in the video loves it.) 1997 – Tamagotchi Eggs (My kids actually took care of these irritating

– and especially at Christmastime! Having said that, our infatuation with new toys and gadgets never lasts. Sooner or later the toy wears out or breaks or a better gadget comes along – and then we begin hankering for the new thing. That’s the cycle that keeps the material side of Christmas humming along. No judgment intended in that statement, just recognizing that we humans are always thirsty for something new and better. Jesus understood that cycle. While talking to the woman at the well in John 4, He said, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” The woman at the well was thirsty. Yes, she was at the well for water, but Jesus saw a thirst in her that went much deeper than what water could satisfy. She was thirsty for love and affection. Or maybe she was thirsty for security or money or position. Whatever it was, her thirst had her working on her sixth marriage. Because God specifically created us for a relationship with Him, we naturally thirst for a deep and profound fulfillment that only a genuine connection with God can satisfy. Blaise Pascal, the notable 17th century mathematician, described

that deep longing in this way, “There is a God-shaped vacuum in the heart of each man which cannot be satisfied by any created thing but only by God the Creator, made known through Jesus Christ.” Like the woman at the well, we are often guilty of using material goods, relationships, experiences and substances to satisfy this deep-down thirst. It all falls short — and our parched spirits are constantly seeking something that will fill the void — a void that only God can fill. Are you thirsty? Are you discovering that the stuff of this world just leaves you thirsting for something more? Have you figured out yet that the latest gadget or toy only satisfies your thirst for a moment? My friend, there is a thirst deep inside of you that only a genuine relationship with God will satisfy forever. I’m guessing you received some Christmas presents this year that made you happy. Great! Enjoy them. But keep in mind that very soon your interest will wane and you’ll be looking for another gadget or two to make you happy. Is it possible that you are thirsting for something the stuff of this world will never satisfy? Just something to think about. “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” Jesus, John 10:10

The WECCC’s Clothes Closet/Thrift Shop offers gently used clothing and other items at reasonable prices. When the Clothes Closet/Thrift Shop was first started, the decision was made to offer clothing and other items at a very low cost so that the people who needed them could afford the items without feeling that they were a charity case. Since the Clothes Closet/Thrift Shop is run by volunteers, after more than 10 years we still offer the same low prices. Vouchers are given to those in need, they can be used to get clothing, including coats and boots, needed to survive cold winter months at no cost to them. Hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, 9:00 am till 2:00 pm; Wednesday 9:00 am till 2:00 pm then reopens 4:30 pm till 7:00 pm; Thursday and Friday 9:00 am till 2:00 pm; Saturdays 8:30 am till Noon. Donations are gladly accepted during the hours listed. Proceeds from sales do help us to pay our bills.

his is my First Annual County Hall Corner Award presentation. In 2018, 52 articles covered many areas of county government, and as I reviewed them, I came up with four categories of awards. First is the MOST FUN AWARD for the article that was the most personally enjoyable for me to research and write. There were many candidates for this, but far and away the winner was “Dog Days” which covered the new courthouse dog, Jedi. Technically, his title is Lycoming County Courthouse Facility Dog, and he is assigned to the Common Pleas Court of Judge Joy Reynolds McCoy. This big adorable lab is cared for by Executive Secretary Jerri Rook who had to attend an intensive two-week training program to learn how to use Jedi’s commands and properly care for him. I was present on Tuesday, December 18th at the Judge McCoy’s chambers to help

celebrate Jedi’s third birthday. As the Family Court Judge, it is amazing how in such a short time this dog has become such an integral part of assisting children that are caught in matters of child custody, child support, and protection from abuse. Jerri Rook spoke with pride about Jedi’s help in putting children at ease, and she is not alone. Everyone that encounters this incredible canine has nothing but praise for him. The next award goes to the MOST MISSED AWARD for those who have left or departed, and that I will personally miss the most. I have tre-

She became my “Google” whenever I had a question about an issue, a reference, a person, or practically anything else. What spoiled me was that Marci never acted like I was a bother, although I am sure I was. My tribute to her in July entitled “We’ll Miss Marci” did not begin to do her justice. In the category MOST AMAZING AWARD, for those that impressed me the most, there are many possible candidates, but the Planning & Community Development Department earns my highest praise. In July of this year, this department completed a two-and-a-half year project updating the county’s comprehensive plan. It is impossible to summarize the mammoth amount of work that went into this critically important report. They did this project on-time, under budget, and every member of the department was involved, adding to their already heavy workload. Not a single new person was hired to assist in this work, and in fact, due to a cost-cutting initiative by the county commissioners, the department had

cut three and a half positions over this time period. Hats off to Director Kurt Hausammann Jr. and Deputy Director Kim Wheeler, for leading such an amazing team. I appropriately titled that article, “A Lesson in Leadership.” The last award is MOST FEEDBACK AWARD, which was far and away for the series on the Williamsport government ballot issue entitled, “Preparing for the Polls.” Total strangers were coming up to me and thanking me saying, “I had no idea what was going on until I began reading those articles.” Truth be told, the real credit should go to Jim Webb Jr. He approached me about writing on the ballot issue, and I was less than enthused about the prospect. Like others, it appeared to me like a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside of an enigma, and I doubted I would be able to make any sense of it all. Hats off to my publisher for having that kind of faith in me, and also for his courage in taking the lead in this crucial public concern. In conclusion, a huge thank you to all those who helped me through 2018 to write the County Hall Corner. I could not do it without you.

Create something to look forward to. Having a goal or reward keeps us motivated. You may want to create a list of goodies loved ones can bring you during recovery like a favorite book, flowers, cards, or snacks (if you aren’t on a restricted diet). This will keep your spirits high and give you something to look forward to after surgery. Surgery Can Improve Your Quality of Life Remember, anxiety is temporary. The surgery you have scheduled is to help you feel better. View your surgery as unlocking a positive future with a better quality of life. As surgeons, we want to get you back on your feet as quickly as possible and back to doing the things you love to do. Whenever appropriate, we offer treatment options that are less invasive. For certain conditions, we offer both minimally invasive surgery and advanced robotic surgery, which allows surgeons to perform complex procedures through very small incisions. When it comes to the surgery, your surgeon is an advocate for you and your health. They will help you understand your condition and guide you to making informed decisions in line with your goals and values. Dr. Scott Croll earned his medical degree from Hahnemann University Hospital – Drexel University, Pa., and completed his residency at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Pa. He offers a wide variety of surgical procedures, including appendectomy, colonoscopy, gall bladder removal, and hernia repair. UPMC Susquehanna offers general surgery services in Wellsboro, Sunbury, Coudersport, Lock Haven, and Williamsport.

these tips to help you successfully prepare for surgery day: Talk to your doctor about your worries prior to your procedure day. Your doctor can explain what to expect before, during, and after your surgery. Get and stay healthy for surgery. In the weeks before, make sure you are eating healthy foods, getting as much exercise as your doctor recommends, and getting enough sleep. Most importantly, if you smoke—QUIT. Smoking impairs and slows recovery, including bone growth, and increases complications such as infection and lung issues. Know what to expect and follow instructions. Providers offer detailed patient guides to walk you step by step through the entire process—from pre-admission testing to discharge. Keep yourself distracted on surgery day. The day of surgery you will spend some time waiting, so prepare to occupy as much of that time as possible. Bring reading material or music to the hospital. Several studies show listening to music before surgery can relieve anxiety. Talk to the hospital staff. By sharing your concerns with the hospital team on the day of surgery, they will know how you are feeling and will do whatever they can to address your fears and help you cope with any anxiety or stress you are feeling. Have a support group of family and friends to talk through your fears. It may also help to designate a partner or a coach that can help you stick to your recovery plan.

attending higher education as well as volunteering in the community while in the program. The goal of Liberty House is for women to not only have the skills to be independent but to empower them to believe that they are capable of making it happen. Women experiencing homelessness or interested in entering Liberty House should call Coordinated Entry at 2-1-1 where they will find the best program to fit anybody’s specific needs. A Liberty House Success Originally from Poughkeepsie, Anastasia took bold steps to escape an abusive relationship by going into a rehab program in Williamsport. After she completed her time in rehab, she came to Liberty House where she worked hard to accomplish each goal she set for herself. Anastasia said she aimed to stay sober, get a job and find her own place. Over the course of her two months at the YWCA, she achieved everything she had set out to do. She acquired employment which helped her to secure an apartment. Anastasia recently celebrated a birthday which also happened to fall on the day she got the keys for her new apartment and the anniversary of being five months sober. “It is the best birthday present ever,” she said. Liberty House gave her the essential tools to end this chapter in her life and open the next one as she continues to be self-sufficient.

program, she came back to Wise Options where the staff helped her figure out her next steps. She got a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) against her abuser to help her feel safer as she began her life of independence. After securing a job, she moved into her own apartment far away from her abuser. Wise Options gave her a safe place to stay when she was in her most vulnerable state. The staff was always there to listen when she wanted to vent and provided her with the resources she needed to continue down a path to independence. The Power of Donations Every dollar given to the YWCA has the power to save a life. The clients who walk through our door often come there with nothing, desperate for a way to turn their life around. Each year more than 1,200 women, men and children seek shelter and a fresh start by staying in Wise Options or Liberty House. The YWCA Boutique is one way clients of the YWCA find warmth, comfort and hope. The Boutique is a high-quality gently-used clothing store located in the YWCA that relies on donated items to serve those in need. The Boutique provides every single YWCA client whatever clothing they may need at no cost — whether it is pajamas, jeans or a suit for a job interview. To change the world and give safety and hope — or to learn more about the YWCA — visit our website today at www. ywcawilliamsport.org. If you’d like to donate to The Boutique, donations can be brought to the YWCA Monday-Friday, 8-5 or Saturdays from 10-2.

ince 1893, the YWCA Northcentral PA has adapted to the changing needs of women in Williamsport. Starting off as a social space, the mission quickly began to focus on helping women and girls working in factories. From there the organization has bloomed into a place where women, men and children can find safety, encouragement and the tools to build a bright future. With the support of donations, the YWCA provides two primary services to our community. Liberty House In 2003 Liberty House first opened its doors to women experiencing homelessness in Lycoming County. Since that time, more than 1,500 women and children have found safety in this housing program. When each woman enters Liberty House, she is greeted by a supportive case manager who helps her identify and achieve goals on the way to self-sufficiency. Case managers help women build their own bright futures, while supporting them emotionally and professionally. Liberty House is a permanent supportive housing program the gives residents ample time to turn their lives around and start again while guiding them through this transitional phase of their lives. Residents learn important life skills such as budgeting, parenting, healthy relationships and how to be a good rental tenant. Women must also be job searching, working or

Wise Options In the mid-1970s a group of women from the YWCA and the Williamsport branch of the National Organization of Women came together to address the unmet needs of local women. Out of that community-wide study, Wise Options was born as a place for survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes to seek help. Today the program has a secure emergency shelter, counseling, group therapy and legal advocacy program. All services are free and open to the public for all people. One of the most utilized Wise Options services is the 24/7 confidential crisis hotline that is always answered by a compassionate advocate there to listen. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call 1-800-326-8483. The goal for Wise Options is to provide a safe location where survivors can get the resources they need to live a life free from violence as well as spread awareness about our services to the community. A medical advocate and prevention educator teach all groups of people about domestic violence, sexual assault, relationships and body boundaries. A Wise Options Success Brandi was trapped in a cycle of abuse where she often sought shelter in Wise Options. After a near-death experience that involved multiple broken bones and knife wounds, she knew she had to leave him for good or risk losing her life. As a way to escape her abuser, Brandi went to rehab for her drug addiction — which she had fallen into as a means of coping with the violence in her life. Once she completed the

assaults on American women involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim or both. While alcohol and its relationship to traffic fatalities draw the bulk of the attention on New Year’s Eve, even people who don’t intend to drive should recognize the dangers of overindulging in alcohol and drink responsibly. • Arrange for transportation. If you need a car to get around on New Year’s Eve and plan to drink alcohol, arrange for someone else to do your driving for you. Groups of friends should choose someone to be their designated driver or pool their money and hire a taxi or bus service for the night so no one who’s been drinking gets behind the wheel. The NHTSA even offers a free app called SaferRide that is compatible with Apple and Android devices and enables users to call a taxi or a friend to be picked up. • Host responsibly. Even people who don’t intend to leave their homes can take steps to make New Year’s Eve safer for everyone. If you’re hosting a party at home, do so responsibly, making sure none of your guests overindulge and making the party less about drinking

ew Year’s Eve is a time to celebrate. But for hundreds of people each year, the week between Christmas and New Year’s Day proves fatal. According to fatality data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, over the last five years an average of 300 people died in drunk driving fatalities between Christmas and New Year’s Day. Holiday celebrations, and New Year’s Eve festivities in particular, tend to include alcohol, raising the stakes during this festive yet too often fatal time of year. The sobering statistics provided by the NHTSA don’t have to prevent people from toasting a new year. In fact, there are many ways to have fun this New Year’s Eve without putting yourself in harm’s way. • Don’t overindulge in alcohol. For many people, overindulging in alcohol is part and parcel during New Year’s Eve celebrations. Such behavior puts everyone at risk, even people who don’t drive. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, conservative estimates suggest that roughly one-half of sexual

and more about having fun. Shift the focus from toasting drinks to games and activities that don’t include alcohol. Make sure to have plenty of food and nonalcoholic beverages on hand and encourage people who are drinking to eat full meals and drink water throughout the night. People who fill up on food and water during the party may feel full, which may discourage them from having extra drinks. While many people will expect to drink alcohol on New Year’s Eve, don’t stock up on too much alcohol, the availability of which may encourage guests to overindulge. Hosts also should keep the phone

hen I was in school, all the boys took wood shop in 9th grade. Projects were small: bookends, birdhouses, footstools, towel racks and the like. In fifth grade, other students started asking me what my older brother was building in the wood shop. As he and I never spoke at home or school, I didn’t know and didn’t dare

amounts for only around ten months after having a calf and then go “dry” until calving again. But they continue to need good nutrition because they are “eating for two”!! My brother’s manger was a vast improvement over the previous ways we fed extra hay to the cows. Before, we either put the bales on the ground or on a wagon. These methods were not as efficient as some hay would get trampled under hoofs. As the manger had slats, the cows pulled out only mouthfuls.

ask. We only interacted when necessary helping dad farm. One day in spring a classmate told me that my dad was out in the school parking lot with a tractor and large implement trailer. Since class was starting, I could only dash to the window for a peek, and sure enough there he was. At the next recess, I ran down but only to see my dad driving off in the distance with a large object on the trailer that looked like something made out of gigantic popsicle sticks. When I

got home that night, out in the barnyard was a large hay feeder, about the size of a camping trailer, for our dairy cattle. What my brother built exceeded the usual woodshop project size by a factor of a 100 or so, at least! This manger was a helpful addition to mom and dad’s dairy. “TV show” cows appear to give endless amounts of milk year around on an occasional handful of grass. “Real” cows, however, will eat 25 to 50 or more pounds daily of hay, depending on what else their diet consists of and if they are grazing or not. Cows give milk in gradually declining

The manger served well for many years but eventually succumbed to 1,200+ lb. animals pushing on it, being placed on soil that was at times muddy and four seasons of weather — especially since it was made from plain wood to avoid any toxins. The last time I traveled the 500 miles to visit the family farm I looked for it, but there was no trace. The Midwest woodlands have been slowly reclaiming the barnyard. I suppose I could find traces of this manger with a machete and shovel, “Indiana Jones” style, but I’ll

Now that’s amazing! Dad and I never fed the cows 12 bales of hay and then picked back up, after the cows had eaten their fill, 20 or more wagonloads!! Jesus said “For the bread of God is He who comes down from Heaven and gives life to the world” and, from the Book of Luke, “This (bread) is my body given for you, do this in remembrance of me.” Jesus wants bread to remind us of Him. This season may we remember His manger. It was humble, no doubt, to look at but it was the structure that held the “Bread of Life,” Jesus, the greatest king of all.

pass unless I learn that something like Baldur’s Ring or the Invincible Ruby is underneath! The once busy barnyard, with up to 30 dairy cows, is now quiet. The galvanized water trough, which used to be filled almost non-stop some days (a lactating cow will drink 30-50 gallons a day, depending on her weight, the weather, etc.) is rusted out and grown over. There is another manger many think about this time of year. It was placed in the “Little Town of Bethlehem” (approx.

pop. 400 then). Bethlehem — was that just a more or less random name, nothing of significance? Until recently (thanks to J. Cahn) “random” is what I thought. But “Beit” in Hebrew means “Place of ” and “house.” “Lechem” is Hebrew for “bread.” So together, Bethlehem means “House of Bread.” Does Jesus ever mention or do anything with bread — yes, He does!! Twice He fed large crowds of 4000 and 5000 heads of households along with their families; starting with five and seven loaves. After the people ate, the disciples gathered up 27 baskets of leftover bread and fish.

Simple Ways to Look and Feel Your Best

A

t the dawn of a new year, many people resolve to reach for new heights. On the path to personal growth or improvement, one may find that making a few adjustments can greatly increase confidence and satisfaction. The adage “don’t judge a book by its cover” can inspire people to look beyond the outer shell to what lies beneath. However, how a person presents himself or herself undeniably has an impact on how this person is perceived. Therefore, individuals can make small changes that improve how

they look and feel about themselves. This, in turn, may make people more self-assured. • Undergo a teeth-whitening treatment. A bright, welcoming smile portrays friendliness and confidence. People who hide their smiles because of yellowing teeth can find that investing in at-home whitening strips or gels, or working with a dentist for professional whitening services, can dramatically change their looks. • Skip the pockets. Rely on clothing that is pocket-less, especially if you’re prone to putting hands in pockets.

Body language experts say that people put their hands in their pockets when they are uncomfortable or unsure of themselves. Keeping one’s hands free can project more confidence in all they do. • Get a tailored wardrobe. Ill-fitting clothing may tell others you don’t care about your appearance, even if you do. Sometimes off-the-rack clothing just doesn’t fit as well as a person may hope, especially if that man or woman is between sizes. Working with a tailor or seamstress to make clothing fit better can help people feel more comfortable in everything they do. • Practice better posture. Standing

tall with shoulders back and head held high can do everything from project assertiveness to help clothes fit and fall better. • Properly groom your brows. Men and women both can benefit from well-tended brows. These eye-framing wonders are one area on the face people tend to notice first. It pays to keep them well-groomed and neat. • Start exercising. Exercise does wonders for not only maintaining a healthy, fit body, but it also can improve mood. These suggestions are relatively easy tweaks to help a person put forth his or her best self. Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

How to Dress Up if you Hate Dressing Up

U

nless you’re a total humbug of a Grinch, chances are you’re going to at least one holiday celebration where you’ll have to dress up. But what if you’re more of a t-shirt and jeans kind of gal? How do you dress up when you’re averse to sequins, heels, and form-fitting frocks? Here are a few tips to creating some holiday style even when you’d rather not. When in doubt, go with basic black.

The Little Black Dress is a classic go-to for a reason. It’s versatile and flattering. For the holidays, you want a LBD in a comfortable silhouette with coverage, i.e., long sleeves, midi-length, that you can punch up with bold accessories, like hoop earrings or a printed scarf. If your dress is in velvet, even better. Nothing says Christmas style like a rich velvet. If you’re totally opposed to wearing a dress, go with black trousers and

knitwear. Again, utilize accessories to give your all-black ensemble some festive flair. If you DO want a bit of sparkle in your holiday look, pick one focal point item and build an outfit around Bernadette it. A beaded bag or Ulsamer embellished heels will make any ensemble feel more formal and give the illusion you are more dressed up. Also, sweaters and T-shirts that have a bit of metallic sheen in their material are just as comfortable as regular tops, but give you a hint of shimmer, which is right in line with holiday dressing. Feel free to skip the pantyhose (and the shaving that goes along with them). Instead, opt for opaque tights, which can be just as dressy as hose, but will keep you warmer. Black tights are fine but consider unexpected colors, like pink, purple, or a patterned pair for an extra oomph. Leggings are also a comfortable alternative under dresses and skirts. Basic black again is fine, but if you are really feeling the season, try leggings with a fair-

isle print or bright stripes. Of course, you can also go with more novelty patterns, like reindeer or twinklylights, but Christmas-specific motifs can verge on tacky. If you must wear jeans, wear trouser-cut jeans. With their bootleg silhouettes, higher waists, and hook and bar closures, they have the comfort of denim but look dressy like suit pants. Paired with a crisp buttonup or chic blouse, you’ll have a partyready look with minimal effort. Don’t forget makeup. You don’t have to sport a full face of foundation this holiday season, but a bit of blush, mascara, and a bold lip can elevate a simple outfit for your holiday soiree. Also, consider a manicure and blowout, which goes with any and every outfit. Overall, the key to dressing up when you’re not a big fan of dressing up is to elevate the type of outfits you would normally wear. You want to stay in the silhouettes and styles you naturally gravitate towards instead of trying to go for high glamour that may not suit you. Happy outfitting and Happy Holidays!

PPL Helps Distribute Food

P

PL employees from the Montoursville Service Center volunteered time to help distribute food to families at the Salvation Army in Williamsport. The Salvation Army serves families in need with their annual Christmas food box including nonperishables, fruit and a frozen turkey or chicken. The Salvation Army also distributes toys from the Marines’ Toys For Tots program in which PPL team members participate. “Because of donors and

volunteers like the team from PPL, hundreds of families have a special meal to share,” says Major Paula Spencer. PPL employees periodically take part in volunteer activities to give back to the communities in which it does business; in 2017, PPL employees volunteered 8000 hours. Pictured from left to right are PPL Electric Utilities’ Trevor Whaley, Jeremy Eckard, Don Murray, Major Paula Spencer, Major Don Spencer, of the Salvation Army and Scott Moyer.

New Year’s Traditions Around the World

E

ach December 31st, people anxiously await and count down to the arrival of the new year. January 1 often is a time for reflection and for making future plans. It also is a holiday full of tradition. Notable New Year’s traditions include toasting champagne beneath skies lit up by fireworks, kissing one’s sweetheart at midnight and making resolutions to better oneself in the year ahead.

New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day traditions vary across the globe. The following is a look at the unique ways people ring in the New Year throughout the world. • Filipinos embrace round fruits for the New Year. The custom includes gathering 12 different round fruits for each month of the year. The round shape symbolizes wealth and prosperity. • PA-046995

Around Stonehaven, Scotland, people wield large fireballs for the Hogmanay festival on New Year’s Eve. The idea is to ward off evil spirits by swinging balls of fires over the heads of trained professionals and then tossing them into the sea. The tradition has endured for more than 100 years. • In the Eastern Orthodox Greek Church, Christmas isn’t celebrated until January 7. Aghios Vassilis, the Greek Santa Claus, makes his rounds on New Year’s Day. • Chilean families celebrate the arrival of the New Year by commemorating deceased friends and family members. It is common for those in Chile to set up chairs next to graves in the cemetery. • Burmese people end the Thingyan water festival on New Year’s Day. Since April, they have celebrated the arrival of Thagyamin, a celestial Buddhist figure, with the firing of water cannons. The waterlogged revelry ends with the New Year. • Siberians celebrate the New Year’s with the planting of the “New Year’s Tree” underneath frozen lakes. This

“yolka” is said to symbolize the coming of Father Frost, but also represents starting over. • Grapes are a hallmark of Spanish New Year’s celebrations. Throughout Spain, revelers gobble a grape per second as they count down the last 12 seconds of the year. Each grape corresponds to good luck for the 12 months of the New Year. • In Denmark, residents break old dishes on the doorsteps of family and friends on New Year’s Day. The bigger the pile, the more friends and good will in the New Year. • In China, where the New Year is celebrated on February 5 this year according to the lunar calendar, celebrants paint their doors red or hang red curtains or cutouts on windows to symbolize good luck.

very year, right about this time, Mother Nature takes care of all of her creatures as they prepare to weather through the upcoming winter months. It is pretty amazing the way some of these birds, animals and insects prepare for and adjust their daily routines in order to make it through the freezing temperatures that are sometimes accompanied by snow and ice. Some “hole up” for the season by hibernating, some merely hunker down and brave the weather and yet others head to warmer climates until the spring thaws and the return of more temperate days. The first generalized group is those that remain in the area and maintain a lower level of activity through the winter months. This group includes our whitetail deer, numerous predators, turkeys and many songbirds. By now, the deer have accumulated whatever layer of fat they might need through the winter by foraging throughout the nights for field corn, soybeans, clovers and grasses as well as one of their preferred foods – the acorns. Bucks will lose some of their fat, if not a good portion of it, during the rut, as they abandon their interest in food and they pursue estrus does. After the rut, they will return to feeding as much as possible to replenish their fat layer. When you hike through the woods and fields throughout the winter months, particularly after a fresh layer of snow, you can’t help but observe fewer deer tracks than you encounter in warmer months. So, where do they go? Most will remain within their normal home range, and merely reduce their activity level as they attempt to conserve their energy and stretch the use of their fat reserves. Some will head deeper into the woods – into yard areas. These yards are more often used by deer in the northernmost states and the Canadian provinces, but this “yarding” activity can occur in our area as well. By moving to these areas, usually with thicker cover, deer can reduce their exposure to wind and by being in a larger group they can be more alert to predators. Many folks are under the misconception that our native Eastern bluebirds migrate south for the winter, but instead, they merely move deeper into the woods for the season. On warm, sunny days you may see a bluebird, but gen-

erally they remain in the forests until warm spring weather brings them back into the open in search for nesting locations and whatever food might be available. Black bears are typical of our hibernators. Yet, they are not true hibernators like bats and groundhogs. A bear’s body temperature and heart rate remain close to normal during the winter, and they spend these months in a state of deep sleep, rather than true hibernation. Bears don’t normally dig a den in the ground, but will take advantage of the cover of the root base of an overturned tree, or sometimes make their “den” under a porch or seldom-used structure and often merely lay on top of the ground, under overhanging evergreen limbs, which protect them somewhat from the snow. If you are hiking during the winter, you might come across bear tracks. More often than not, they are the result of a male bear, or boar, out in search of food. The males do not sleep as deeply as the females, particularly females that are either pregnant or have cubs with them. And then there are the migrators. We all can recall the sight and sound of Canada geese and snow geese as they move south for the winter and as they pass through again in the springtime. Most ducks will also head south for the winter, while some will stop in the Chesapeake Bay area for the wintertime. But the most amazing story of migration is that undertaken by the monarch butterflies. They are the only butterfly that makes a two-way migration like birds. Traveling 50-100 miles per day (the longest distance recorded was 265 miles in one day!), their journey of sometimes over 3,000 miles can take up to two months. They winter in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico at an altitude of 2-3,000 feet, and cluster for warmth in the oyamel fir trees. Sometimes, upward of tens of thousands will cluster in a single tree! While the journey southbound is made by a single generation of monarchs, the trip northbound will involve up to 3 or 4 generations until they finally reach their destination in the northern United States and Canada. These represent but a few of the varied ways that birds, animals and insects adapt their daily routine to survive and thrive through the winter months. Some of their stories can be told by observing tracks in the snow on your next winter hike.

my wife and I were doing some Christmas shopping; I was trying to buy something for her but she wanted to try things on first. She came out of the dressing room in “petite” and told me to return to Alfred Dunner and change one size for another. I made my way out of “petite” and around “misses” and eventually into Alfred Dunner, exchanged the blouse and headed back to “petite”. While working my way through “misses,” in my haste I accidently knocked over a dummy-no, not a manikin but some guy standing there with a glazed look on his face while trying to shop for his wife. From now on I’m taking my compass when I go shopping.

I wasn’t raddled the first hour or so in the store but after a while I thought it best to call her. “Sheila, I’m in “beans”, how do I get to milk?” After a brief pause she instructed me to continue down the aisle until I hit frozen foods — keep frozen foods on your left all the way to the corner and there you will find milk. Thankfully when I finally got to milk my daughter-in-law spotted me and could tell from the glazed look in my eyes I needed help. With a little help from several of the ladies up front I was able to find the “Less than fifteen items” check out and I was on my way. Not knowing where you are in a strange place can be scary. n the day after Christmas all through the land Folks were as busy as a one-man band Jolly Santa had been there the night before But now things were being brought back to the store

But wait, alas that might not be true A new way of shopping did ensue Instead of the stores where one can say hello It’s off to the post office or UPS we go Shopping online is all that does matter Avoiding long lines and that constant chatter But returning that stuff that wasn’t quite right Had Santa upset and shuttering all through the night What would become of his workforce of toy makers and elves? If Amazon and Google had all the gifts on their shelves Not to mention the reindeer that pulled

As the sporting world takes a bit of a respite from its usual routine, I want to pass along my belated wishes for a Merry Christmas and upcoming Happy Scott Lowery New Year. In the spirit of full disclosure, I had every intention of doing that very thing in last week’s Webb Weekly, but that well-intended plan hit a bit of a snag. I could avoid what I know will be some deserved ribbing from those aware of my ‘computer savvy skills’ but it won’t be the first time so here goes. Fully intending to pen a Christmasthemed column complete with sporting references of the local scene, I set aside some quiet time to compile my thoughts. Sometimes when you write something, it may not turn out the way you intended it to be, but this was different. Who knows what you readers may have thought, but I was quite pleased with what I would be sending to print. After proof-reading for errors, I was about to send the completed

had been in business for thirty years and had some very good years and wonderful memories. She added ‘times were changing,’ and they would be closing in January but hoped to return next fall for the Christmas season. As our conversation continued I told her of my preference for store shopping where I could see, feel and try on the merchandise rather than waiting for its arrival and what I considered ‘the hassle’ of mailing back those things that did turn out just right. She smiled and confessed, “I shop online a lot. I just don’t have the time.” Yes indeed, those times are a changing!

Instead of hitting the ‘save’ key my overzealous fingers plunked themselves on ‘delete’ and into the cloud my column did go. It wasn’t a friendly cloud either as attempts to retrieve same where to no avail. Kind-hearted Steph offered to give me more time but trying to recreate what I had written left nothing but frustration, which would not have been the Christmas message I had intended to deliver. So go ahead, take your shots, but I can assure you my intentions were merry & bright. To return this column to somewhat of its usual sporting-theme our family Christmas did indeed include many sports-related packages under the tree. All were much appreciated by their recipients including one gift I had purchased during my pre-Christmas shopping ventures in a store in the fastdisappearing Lycoming Mall. Approaching the checkout the clerk appeared a bit taken back when I handed over real green American folding currency to pay the tab. She smiled and said ‘that doesn’t happen much anymore.’ For some reason that struck up a conversation and I asked her how business had been. She answered that sales were not as good as in previous years then went on to say they

his bests, and I remember them well. Creb’s grapplers went 22-0 that year and won the MAC and Eastern Regionals. They were the top dogs at the Budd Whitehill National Duals and finished seventh at the NCAA Division III National Championships. Three Warriors earned All American honors that season. What a run. Roger Crebs is more than just a successful coach. He is a true ambassador of Lycoming. Don’t let that rough exterior fool you — Coach Crebs cares deeply about all of his wrestlers and the college. He has put his heart and soul into this program. I have yet to find anyone who wants everyone to succeed like Roger. He has an unbelievable connection with his wrestlers. Current or former — Coach Crebs has tabs or some information on them all. It’s a bond that you cannot describe. He cares. “The 400 dual meet victories is the real milestone,” Former NCAA Division III National Champion Royce Eyer explained. “This feat exemplifies Coach Crebs’ consistency. It is a true testament of how he gets the very best out of his wrestlers year after year. Congratulations Coach.” Coach was named the 1994 National Wrestling Coaches Association’s Rookie

Holidays and the end of the year are times for families and for giving thanks. Greevy and Shoemaker would like to thank all of our clients for the faith they have shown in us over the past year. It is also time to evaluate current circumstances and plan for the upcoming year. It is the time when families meet and sometimes realize Mom and Dad aren’t as self-sufficient as they once were. Maybe it’s time to consider options for their personal and financial well-being. And it’s also a good time for a review of the essential documents – will, powerof-attorney and living will that are needed when a patient is admitted to a nursing home. Please be assured the attorneys at Greevy and Shoemaker are both at your service to provide experienced and expert advice to and for our elderly clients. And as always, the first consultation is free.

see the bigger picture. “Division I football players are born they aren’t made,” Crews said. “You can’t make an athlete that special. Sunday football players are born. What we had a hand in doing was making him a better person. A better teammate. Football is just a small part of what we do here at Williamsport.” Jerome and Georgia Potts, head football coach Chuck Crews, his assistant coach Kevin Brown, and a countless number of teammates and friends will be there to continue to support Potts when he departs for Minnesota. The only thing for him will be the hard work it takes to be a successful athlete at the highest level outside of the professional ranks. If history is any type of teacher, Potts has a big future in front of him.
