2019…The Future is Now

H

appy New Year! I just can’t even fathom that it is the year 2019. Where have the 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s gone? Not to mention, we’re working our way towards 2020. If you are around my age or older, tell me that doesn’t sound like a science fiction movie? One thing is for sure; no truer words have ever been spoken than, as you get older the years go by faster. A “Star Trek” reference to warp speed seems to sum it all up. Now that the holidays are in the rearview mirror, it’s time to put everything away and return to a normal routine. There’s so much going on from our home here in Penn’s Woods to Pennsylvania Avenue, and beyond, I just can’t wait to get after it. And believe me, there’s a lot of people and topics that need getting after. So we’ll start right here in our own backyard and work our way out. It will be an election year for the office of Mayor in the City of Williamsport. A vote the residents of Williamsport voted to keep in their back pocket, rather than to listen to the noise that they would be better served to allow City Council to take care of this. Believe me; I will remind you who was behind this as we get closer to election time in November. They just happen to be up for reelection by the citizens of Williamsport. Tip of my Webb Weekly cap to the voters of the City of Williamsport. The office of Mayor is still a respected, important, and most sought-after position. This only makes

for a stronger City. There will be more candidates vying for the job than ever in the past. Mr. Eric Beiter was the first to announce his candidacy for office. His energy, enthusiasm, and love of the City are obvious. I’m glad to see a young local business leader taking his shot. Next up was City Councilman Don Noviello throwing his hat in the ring. Mr. Noviello made it clear he is a big believer in the strong-mayor system, and then proved it by being the first city council person to officially announce their intention. I can promise you, he will not be the last. Councilman Derek Slaughter is taking a good hard look at whether it’s his time to put his name on the ballot. Another outstanding young candidate, he must decide if his time is now or in the future. Mayor Gabriel Campana has not yet announced his intentions. But if he chooses to call it a day, he will be a tough act to follow. One thing is for sure — there will be a strong field running in November. This for an office certain people wanted you to believe is insignificant. Moving on up to county government, Commissioners Tony Mussare, Jack McKernan and Rick Mirabito have done a great job trying to juggle the budget and avoid a tax increase. Please remember they inherited the problem of White Deer Golf Course, which is a very sore subject when I talk to folks around the county. The budget

crisis is a problem at every level of government; they have been able to literally pull a rabbit out of their hat so far. As far as White Deer is concerned, it is definitely an asset to our community, but not an asset our community wants to pay for with tax dollars. I think the time Jim has come that White Webb, Jr. Deer must be owned and operated by someone from the private sector. Again, our current county commissioners got stuck with this problem, and it shouldn’t be their issue to deal with in the world we live in today. The less government involvement in anything the better, this is a perfect example. So that gets us to the office of governor. Every time I want to give the man the benefit of the doubt he just proves to me he’s Governor Tom Wolf in sheep’s clothing. Talking about using poppycock and camouflage in an attempt to cover up his far-left liberal agenda. He fits right in with the leadership of the State of California. His latest effort to again change the voting districts in the Keystone State should concern both Republicans and Democrats. It is just a complete power grab to take away our small-town-say in Harrisburg. That’s what Governor Wolf and his cronies want to do for you. That gets us to our federal government and what’s going on inside the Beltway. The hot topic of the day — government shutdown.

To build a wall or not build a wall — that is the question. President Donald Trump was elected by the American people to protect our homeland and secure our borders. He is not going to back down nor should he. We must all understand there are people out there that want to end our way of life. It may be through a terrorist attack, drug infusion, or simply changing America to what they want, instead of assimilating to our culture. No one is being turned away from immigrating to our great Nation when done legally. The illegal immigrants of today want no consequences, or they want our laws changed before they even enter our Country. The most ridiculous thing is this is supported by the far-left liberal fringe that call themselves fellow Americans. Folks, I don’t know if the wall is the final answer, but something must be done. As far as this government shutdown bullreaucracy, I can solve that in a New York minute. Don’t penalize the working class people within the federal government. The first people that don’t get paid should be those elected to Washington — and this includes every benefit they receive. Their staff gets paid but doesn’t go to work. This includes the Secret Service that protects them. No more car and driver, let them find their own transportation. To heck with an expense account, let them pay for their own meals. Not even anyone provided by tax dollars to say God bless you when they sneeze. We’d never have to hear this complete crapola about a government shutdown again. God Bless America.

Happy New Year! Yesterday, everybody smoked his last cigar, took his last drink and swore his last oath. Today, we are a pious and exemplary community. Thirty days from now, we shall have cast our reformation to the winds and gone to cutting our ancient shortcomings considerably shorter than ever. ~ Mark Twain

I

mentioned last week that I wasn’t even ready for Christmas as I was writing my article, let alone New Year’s. So now, here I sit, just a couple of days before the New Year contemplating what my goals and resolutions for 2019 should be. After much consideration, I have compiled my list. So without further ado, my goals for the upcoming year: – Keep my houseplant alive for another year. – Drink more water than coffee. – Drink more water than whiskey. – Drink more water than beer — I

think I’m getting off track here. – Take more naps. – Watch more cute and cuddly kitten videos on Steph Nordstrom YouTube. – Switch my username to “password” and my password to “username” to make each a lot harder for hackers to figure out. – Help kids stay safe by not texting on my cell phone while eating McDonald’s and speeding through crosswalks in school zones with a frost covered windshield. – Eat more fruit... snacks. – Visit the grocery store more often than restaurants, especially when free samples are being served. – Put more embarrassing items in random peoples carts while shopping at Wal-Mart. – Squeeze the tube of toothpaste from the end and not the middle.

– Pet more cats. – Be more assertive — if that’s okay with you guys? – Exercise (my right to eat) more (tacos). – Consider taking up a new hobby such as procrastination — ehhh maybe later. – Believe in something, like for instance, “I believe I’ll have another drink.” – Love myself the way Kanye loves Kanye. – Start following my list and stop letting Target decide what I need. – Be more optimistic by keeping my cup half-full — with either vodka, or whiskey. – Finally, to accomplish all the goals of 2018, which I should have done in 2017, because I promised them in 2016 and planned them in 2015. I hope you all enjoyed your New Year’s, and that you are making plans for an amazing 2019. I hope you all have a happy and healthy New Year! And may all your problems last as long as your New Year’s Resolutions!

he year 2018 was a big year for one youthful musician from Loyalsock Township, 14-year old Gabriel Severn, who might be regarded as somewhat of a prodigy on the electric bass. His musical journey is comparable to an artist at least twice his age. In the past year alone, Gabriel has won multiple awards, performed coast to coast, appeared at many notable music festivals, and recorded his award-winning original music with some of the world’s most prominent jazz artists — all before his 14th birthday. Gabriel’s musical aptitude resulted in him receiving two DownBeat Student Music Awards this year. These awards are considered the most prestigious in jazz education and the educational equivalent to the Grammys. He made his recording debut with his DownBeat Award-winning tune “Song for Fina” on November 16, 2018. Gabriel’s love of Brazilian bossa nova and samba inspired him to write “Song for Fina,” which he dedicated to a close family

friend for her birthday. On this project, Gabriel teamed up with multiple Emmy Award winner and multiple Grammy Award nominee Chieli Minucci, who produced and played guitar on the recording. Stellar world-class musicians and Special EFX members Joel Rosenblatt (drums) and Jay Rowe (keys) are also featured in the project. His maiden voyage into composing demonstrates his musical sophistication and depth and is a step into new artistic paths. “Right from the start, as I was growing up, I was surrounded by jazz music. Primarily because my dad is a professional trumpet player and jazz musician,” Gabriel told Webb Weekly. “So I grew up listening to jazz from a very young age.” He continued, “For some reason, I was always drawn to the sound of the bass. I have a feeling it was because of the low frequency. But when I went to my dad’s gigs, I would always point out the bass. I used to sit in my dad’s lap as a toddler and watch videos of Jaco Pastorius.” According to his parents, when he sat in his car seat as a baby, his ears were

2018 Boscov’s Berks Jazz Festival, the Dauphin County Wine & Jazz Festival, the Scranton Jazz Festival, and TEDx Harrisburg. As a soloist, Gabriel has performed at the 2018 NAMM Show, the 2018 Dallas International Guitar Festival, the Berkshires Jazz Festival, and has been a guest with many ensembles in the past six years. He has studied with and been mentored by, many prominent bassists, including Victor Wooten, Anthony Wellington, and Adam Nitti. He’s had the honor of receiving scholarships to Wooten’s Bass/Nature Camp, the Berklee College of Music’s first Groove School, and has attended Gerald Veasley’s Bass Bootcamp, the Central PA Jazz Camp, the Keystone Jazz Institute and the Uptown Music Collective. He was asked what it meant to have recorded with such world-class musicians. “It’s great! I would never have known from when I started playing that I would have all these opportunities to play and record with such amazing players.” Looking to the future, he said, “I would like to just study and play with as many great players as I can! I would like to do this professionally and write more music as well.” It certainly looks like Gabriel Severn has a bright musical future ahead for himself.

filled with jazz, fusion, and funk. He first learned to groove at age seven with the Uptown Music Collective’s Urban Souls, a Motown tribute band he joined just a few months after starting bass lessons with local teacher Tim Breon. The band gained significant recognition, performing at community events, benefits, music festivals, and on radio and TV. While learning the Motown classics, he would challenge himself by transcribing jazz and fusion bass solos. He received international recognition with a viral video at age 11, which set the wheels in motion for a professional career. Gabriel is the first Markbass Rising Star, is an Ernie Ball Music Man artist, and developed a custom line of bass strings made by Carlos Pavicich in France. Several other companies also endorse him. Although he played in a variety of bands after the Motown group, Gabriel wanted his own band, so at age 12 he gathered some of central Pennsylvania’s best and most promising young musicians and formed his jazz fusion band, “Teen Town.” The band has toured throughout Pennsylvania and taken audiences by storm, opening for many major artists, including the Victor Wooten Trio, the Tierney Sutton Band, and the Original Drifters. “Teen Town” has appeared at many notable festivals and events, including the

See the USA By Andy Kline

I

n 1979 my Aunt Wilma and Uncle Mitch Geiger drove cross-country from Merced, California to visit their hometown of Watsontown. Little did I know that visit would change my life forever. The promise of sun, no snow, warmer temperatures, new employment opportunities, and rust free cars was all it took for my Uncle to “stake his claim” in CA. It was during that visit in 1979 that Mitch

went to the trailer he was pulling and retrieved a 1979 GM Promotional sales model — a Red 1979 Corvette — and gave it to me in the backyard of my grandmothers home. For an eightyear-old boy growing up on Elm Street in Watsontown, this immediately became one of my most valuable possessions and started me down a path that led me to a love for automobiles, motorcycles and anything with an engine. Almost 40 years later, that very same mint condition 1979 Corvette mod-

el sits in the center of my desk in my home office and parked nearby are several classic cars of my own. For that model to have survived 40 years, college, the army, and four moves says a lot for my love of that 8’’ plastic car. It isn’t so much the car but what the car represented to me personally. That car gave me goals and allowed me a chance to “See the USA” and so much more. Even before I was really able to fully understand all of that, as an 8-year-old child, I knew that someday I was going out west to visit my aunt and uncle. I was going to see the place where it all

began, where the rust free cars lived, the sun always shined, and the car shows never end. In April of 2007, I finally took the time, and most of all had the financial means to start visiting them a few times a year. By 2007 they had already been living in Idaho for over 15 years, and the “high desert” of Idaho provides a climate with little rain, humidity, and snow. This is perfect for the preservation of vehicles left outside as well as the storage and upkeep of already restored cars. I got my first look at Mitch’s car collection, something I dreamed

FLORAL TRIBUTES One of the flowers most often associated with funeral services is the lily, which is thought to symbolize the restoration of innocence to the soul of the departed. White lilies, in particular, are prized in this regard for their majesty and purity. While white stargazer lilies represent sympathy, the white calla lilies that commonly appear at Easter services as symbols of resurrection and rebirth are well-known symbols of death. Aside from expressing the idea of life and fertility, white calla lilies also carry the meaning of innocence. On the other hand, yellow calla lilies express gratitude. The depiction of a broken calla lily on an old tombstone is symbolic of a life taken before its time. Sending a floral tribute is an appropriate way of expressing sympathy to the family of the deceased. Flowers express a feeling of life and beauty and offer much comfort to the family. A floral tribute can either be sent to the funeral home or the residence. To learn more about our funeral services, please call Michael R. Lingg, Supervisor or any of our staff at KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME at 570-323-7717. We are located at 1914 Memorial Avenue facility. QUOTE: “The earth laughs in flowers.” - Ralph Waldo Emerson

a car almost four decades old, 2,300 miles from our home — I had to figure out how to get it home and most of all how I was going to pay for it. Since there were very few lending institutions back, then that gave loans for “old” cars my first hurdle was avoided when Mitch offered to set up a payment schedule and allow me to make payments to them. For two years I was never so happy to write that check and send it off to Idaho in care of my Aunt Wilma. Next came the point when my wife arrived back from shopping with my Aunt the day I bought it, and I proudly exclaimed how I bought “our” first classic car. Needless to say, she wasn’t as excited as I was, but she at least was a good sport about it. After talking with Mitch, it was decided I would drive the car back to Pennsylvania, what better way to “See the USA,” he explained. At the time I had no clue this was an advertising slogan GM used in the 60s and 70s, but that sparked my second passion of mine — travel. I formed a plan to fly back out in June on a Friday, attend a car show and picnic Saturday and start back to Pennsylvania on Sunday. Once home I

of for 30 years and explained to him that I would like to purchase a classic car someday. I had been searching for other investments. Given the uncertainty of the stock market and low rates on savings accounts, it seemed like a stable investment. After mentioning my thoughts on buying a classic someday it did not take long until I was in their driveway peering into an enclosed trailer at a car he would be willing to sell. Inside that trailer was a 1970, Gobi Beige, vinyl top, Chevrolet Nova, two door with 59,000 original miles on the odometer. Further inspection proved it to be the original paint, glass, interior, wheels — everything number matching like it left the Chevy dealership but 37 years later! I could hardly think straight long enough to formulate a complete sentence when my Uncle gave me his asking price and I stated without hesitation or consulting my wife “I’ll take it”! He was more than happy to have not only planted the “car” seed 28 years earlier but to have also sold me my very first classic. At this point, the excitement, joy and numerous emotions suddenly came to a halt, and all the real work began. I not only had to tell my wife I bought

SEE THE USA secured the help of my friend Scott as a travel companion for the June Trip, someone to not only share the journey with but to keep me awake, help change tires, engines — who knows what — as I had never done anything like this, let alone in a 37-year-old car. To say I was a bit worried is an understatement — my AAA Plus plan was not going to fix any major issues on this trip. Little did I know, Mitch went over the car top to bottom in the months leading up to the trip, replaced the tires, battery, shocks, plugs, wires, and all the fluids and filters as well as checked all the brakes. When Scottie and I arrived in June, Wilma picked us up at the Boise Airport, and within an hour we were at their home. The next day started with Scottie and I taking the Nova to a car show in Emmett, parked next to my Nova was my Uncle’s Canso — a Canadian GM version of the Chevy 2. At that moment things seemed to have come full circle in a span of about 28 years, I got the Red Corvette model and now was the proud owner of my own classic. That afternoon, my Aunt Wilma put on a picnic at their home

for about 50 people from the show as well as other local friends, everyone came in classic cars, their driveway was filled with cars from the 30s to the 70s. It was at the “car show picnic” that I got the idea to hold my own “Hot Rod Party” — this year was the 9th annual. Sunday I got up, packed my bag and prepared to leave, Mitch already had the Nova gassed up and detailed — ready to go. We said our goodbyes and set off on the 2,300mile odyssey. Passing the Great Salt Lake I thought of someday setting a land speed record and what it would have been like to talk to some of the greats like Mickey Thompson or Burt Munro. Two days later, after one night in a motel and another day of driving for 24 hours straight, without a single mechanical issue, we were back in Pennsylvania, fully understanding the true meaning of “See the USA.” The places and people I have met on my 11-year journey to reconnect with my aunt and uncle could fill a book, war heroes, farmers, ranchers, business owners and more, all part of my personal life story and my love for my country and the automobile.

END OF THE YEAR BLOWOUT SALE! “I had a hearing problem, but I would not admit it. The family was always after me to get a hearing test. I heard about Artisan Hearing Technologies and I thought I would try it, I drove past the office a few times before I finally stopped in and had a hearing test. I had hearing loss. No pressure from Jennifer Burget, but I decided to take a hearing aid out on a 2 week trial. I was very surprised at what I was hearing, no more repeating myself, no more huh. The TV volume went down. I love the app for my smart phone, it’s great! If you want the best hearing aids and service I recommend Jennifer at Artisan Hearing Technologies.” ~ John McDermott

less from paying it. Still other problems need to be resolved is the administration of the tax and whether or not employees working out of the city in branch offices of city establishments should be included. Also, what payment should be expected from part-time workers and civil service employees, and what about the person who holds two or more jobs in the city? While city residents dislike taxes, as well as their out-of-town brethren, the latter seem to raise more of a fuss about the occupation tax proposals. Their gripe is that the tax is unfair in that it is “taxation without representation,” that they are being made to pay for the privilege of working in another community and they already are paying taxes where they live. In turn, city officials answer that they must provide of services and protections for non-residents as well as their own taxpayers.

lthough Williamsport has approved a 1964 budget, the proposed occupational privilege tax is still in the study stage. Receipts from the tax, estimated at $156,000, have been figured into the budget, making its passage virtually certain. But a mass of legal technicalities that go along with the tax indicate that several more weeks may be needed before an ordinance establishing the $10 can be enacted. The city solicitor is currently reviewing similar tax ordinances drawn up by other communities. The types of ordinances — and who will be included in the levy — appear to be as numerous as communities that have them. Some communities include everyone who works within the city limits as being responsible for paying the tax, others such as Reading, exclude everyone 21 years old or

Hidden Ways You Can Benefit From Having Hobbies

F

inding time for hobbies can be difficult. Commitments to work and family take up the bulk of many people’s free time, making it hard to squeeze in a favorite hobby. But hobbies can benefit people in some interesting ways. Understanding those hidden benefits may compel some people to make more time for their favorite downtime activities. • Hobbies can improve your efficiency. Penciling more activities into your day planner may not seem like something that will help you create more time for hobbies, but it just might. For example, if you know you have a softball game or choir practice at night, then you might waste less time surfing the internet or talking around the water cooler during the workday. In a 2017 study conducted for the staffing firm OfficeTeam, researchers found that the average office employee spends about five hours per week on his or her mobile phone doing things that have nothing to do with the job. That’s five hours you could be working, opening up more time for hobbies before or after work. • Hobbies can foster social connections. In his 2000 book, “Bowling Alone,” political scientist Robert Putnam described a reduction in in-person social intercourse that once enriched Americans’ social lives. By making more time for hobbies,

particularly those that promote interaction with other adults, men and women can foster social connections that otherwise might never blossom. • Hobbies can provide health benefits. The American Institute of Stress notes that some hobbies can help people reduce their stress. The AIS notes that some 56 million women in the United States now knit or crochet. That marks a 51 percent increase over the last decade. That revival is attributed to the stress-reducing properties of knitting and crocheting. Men and women coping with stress need not learn how to wield a sewing needle to alleviate their stress. Activities that promote slowing down and induce a relaxation response similar to knitting and crocheting can be equally beneficial. • Hobbies can increase quality time with your children. Parents with hobbies can double dip, using the time they would ordinarily spend with their children to teach them some of their favorite hobbies. Take kids along when you go fishing or teach them how to plant flowers and tend to a garden. This is a great way to increase quality time with your children while also affording you a chance to continue engaging in your favorite hobbies. Hobbies can benefit people in ways they never imagined, making them worthwhile pursuits no matter how much or how little time you may have.

County Hall Corner: A Bumpy Year Ahead? By Larry Stout

T

he beginning of a new year is generally a time to make resolutions, but it also should be a time to do a little strategic thinking. All of us would benefit by examining the challenges of the coming year that should be factored into our thinking or planning. This is certainly true for county government as well. One of the biggest issues will be the election of the three county commissioners. Through a very unusual quirk in the system, all three of the county commissioners — Jack McKernan, Tony Mussare, and Rick Mirabito, will all be up for reelection in 2019. The Pennsylvania primary election will be on May 21st, with the regular election on November 5th. The last day to register to be able to vote in the May primary will be April 22nd. Candidates will be collecting signatures for their petitions to be put on the ballot of the May primary beginning in March, so obviously a candidate will be announcing their intent to run rather soon to begin gaining some early mo-

mentum. The emerging commissioner-wannabes will have a host of issues to pick on, some of which are critical for the county and others motivated by personal preference. But this also means that the current commissioners (assuming they will run again), will obviously have an eye on the coming election as well, and may not be able to resist commentary on their tenure as part of the commissioner meeting deliberations. If the potential candidates choose to confront the commissioners, it might make for some more contentious-than-usual meetings in the coming months. While the drama of the election will certainly keep the public’s attention,

Department and others like them, it cannot help but have an impact on operations and services. The machine will still run, but not at the efficiency of the past, at least, not for a while. It would not be surprising to see some glitches pop up in the coming months through this transition of personnel. Another big discussion topic on the horizon is one that was described last March by Commissioner Mirabito as “one of the most exciting things we have worked on as a commissioner board.” It is the Early Intervention Program (EIP) of the Pennsylvania Department

of Community and Economic Development. It was originally set up to assist local municipalities experiencing financial difficulties but has since been used by some of the healthiest counties in the state to improve their management, operational, and financial practices. For the past six months, the researchers have conducted a comprehensive study, interviewing all the departments, row offices, as well as the courts. They have looked at personnel and data from these departments to see what the needs are and what they are not getting, what current technology is being used and

what the projected technology needs might be. The final report of the EIP study will be out very soon, and to act on or ignore the recommendations (such as selling Executive Plaza, for example), will be hotly debated. Not only will the three commissioners grapple with the options facing them, but this will also feed into the campaign, giving commissioner candidates more fuel for their fire. So buckle your seat belts, faithful readers of County Hall Corner, for 2019 promises to be quite a ride.

some other underlying issues might be even more significant. The county had a number of very competent managers that retired in 2018, and they take with them decades of experience. Yes, others will have to pick up the slack, but to use a football analogy, when Tom Brady retires, there will be another quarterback for the New England Patriots — but he won’t be Tom Brady. I only told others where I lived when necessary because our family farm was down a narrow gravel road between two small “towns” that didn’t have a traffic light or even a stop sign on the roads through. It’s interesting that although now I realize these things don’t matter and that country living even inspires magazines today, back then I felt ashamed about such things. Too bad the song recorded by country music artist Barbara Mandrell, “I

Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool,” wasn’t recorded yet!! I knew Mom and Dad did their best for me, and I certainly didn’t want to live anywhere else, heating with wood or not. Some of my good memories with my dad are when we would take a wagon pulled by “Mighty Mouse” — Dad’s name for the grey 9N Ford tractor — to the woods or local sawmill and collect firewood to saw up and stack. A big day for me was when Dad “turned me loose” with the chainsaw. This was especially notable because my older brother a few years earlier had cut into his knee with the same saw. AMAZING

me were when the feed silo and grain bins were built by the barn. The silo was how I gave directions to the farm — “Look for the ‘Silver Shield Silo.” In high school, our small high school was “consolidated” (swallowed up) by a bigger city district. Although we all got along well and made many new friends, the little towns around the farm felt even smaller and less significant to me. Conversations seemed to be about events at the school and in the larger towns. I never “talked up” the little towns and gravel roads around the farm. It’s amazing that so many of us (well, at least me) spend seasons of our life feeling bad about ourselves when, if you stop and look at “the details,” there is no reason to!! In fact, if you were to give the situation to others, some wouldn’t mind and might even write a song about it. During this Christmas season, I learned a few things about Nazareth, the hometown of Jesus. It was small, population 100 to maybe 400 tops. The name “Nazareth” means “‘branch.” From the prophetic Book of Isaiah, written 800 years earlier, “A shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse (the father of King David); from his roots, a Branch will bear fruit.” The expectations of the Israeli nation

then, were that the Messiah would be mighty in earthly power and grandeur — no doubt that he would be from a “big city,” commanding thousands. Quite the opposite happened, however. It is recorded in the Bible that Nathanael, who became one of the 12 disciples, when first hearing about Jesus from Philip said, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Many others in that region rejected Jesus, “His own received him not.” I am thankful that Jesus came into, lived and left this world in humility. He knows how we feel. He was born where there was no heat or running water at all. I had it good!! If I could go back in time, just once, to the 8:00 a.m. gathering (hang out time) before class in the high school foyer, after one of my “city” friends in a white shirt would finish saying “Yep, boys, I live at 846 Asphalt Avenue, Slick Town, USA, I drive a ‘68 gold Camaro with chrome rims, and we dine out every night”, I would reply “I live on Rural Route 1, USA, it’s down two miles of one lane gravel road with cows on it some days, I drive a tractor named “Mighty Mouse” and eat mustard and sardine sandwiches with my dad in the woods, and I wouldn’t trade that for anything in the world”.

multiple parts of the body. Routine cardiovascular exercise has been linked to reduced risk for heart disease and other ailments. In addition, a 2009 study from researchers in South Korea found that hip hop dancing can boost mood and lower stress. 2. Schedule daily exercise time. Parents and their children are as busy as ever, so it makes sense to schedule family exercise time just like you schedule family meals or outings to the museum. Kids who compete in sports may already get enough physical activity each day. The CDC recommends children participate in at least 60 minutes of physical activity each day, so kids who aren’t playing sports can spend an hour each day sweating alongside mom and dad. 3. Walk after dinner. Families who routinely dine together can delay doing the dishes to walk off their meals. A walk around the neighborhood after dinner provides solid family time, but it’s also a great way to stay healthy. A 2017 study from researchers at the University of Warwick that was published in the International Journal of Obesity found that people who took 15,000 or more steps each day tended to have healthy body mass indexes, or BMIs. That’s an important benefit, as an unhealthy BMI is often a characteristic of obesity. Getting fit as a family can be fun and pay long-term dividends for parents and children alike.

he buddy system is widely used to help men and women get in shape. Friends can encourage their workout partners to get off the couch on days when their motivation might be waning, and partners can return that favor when the roles are reversed. And the benefits of the buddy system are not exclusive to adults, as families can rely on it to make sure moms, dads and kids each get the exercise they need. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ongoing exercise can help people of all ages control their weight, improve their mental health and mood and reduce their risk for various diseases, including heart disease and type 2 diabetes. And the benefits may go beyond those normally associated with exercise, particularly for young people. A 2009 analysis of the fitness records of 1.2 million Swedish men born between 1950 and 1976 found that the more exercise they had during adolescence, the more likely they were to be professionally successful as adults. Getting fit as a family can be easy. The following are just a few ways parents and their children can get in shape together. 1. Start dancing. Dancing isn’t just a fun activity, it’s also a very healthy one. While dancing might often be categorized as a recreational activity, such a categorization overlooks the many health benefits of cutting a rug. Dancing is a great cardiovascular exercise that works

A COMPANY YOU CAN FEEL COMFORTABLE WITH!

W

ith the beginning of winter weather settling in and spending time by the fireplace a much more enjoyable pastime now, you might want to take time to focus your attention on some springtime activities, in order to get your mind off of Mother Nature’s winter stranglehold. So let’s start to plan out what we can do this coming spring to better the habitat for deer, turkeys, grouse, and other wildlife. Consider creating two maps, if your property is large enough to warrant this approach. One map should be of your own property, showing fields, forested areas, and logging roads. The second map should encompass the neighboring properties, with your property centered on the map. This will help identify what woodlots, crop-producing fields and abandoned fields surrounding your own property. Knowing what kind of habitat already surrounds your own acreage will help determine what can

best be done to improve the cover and food sources you currently have available. All wildlife tends to prefer a varied habitat and a variety of foods. Once you have determined what already exists, you can more easily decide how to manage your own property. In forested areas, you might consider doing a total clearcut or two, where the acreage could be as small as a ¼ acre, or as large as five acres. Wildlife prefers edges, so rather than a simple square-shaped opening — consider making it a long rectangle or perhaps an “S” or “C” shape. Along the edges of the new opening, some logs can be stacked in a crisscross pattern, and some treetops left or brush piles created to house or protect nesting birds or cottontail rabbits. Once the sunlight is now able to hit the forest floor, seeds that have been dormant for years will begin to sprout, producing new nesting and bedding areas. Initially, you can expect to see blackberries, raspberries, seedlings of fire cherry, and some evergreens filling in the opening.

of the open fields untouched, but developing a few food plots, varying in size from ¼ acre to one or two acres will really draw and hold game. Field corn or soybeans are a top choice, but if they are already an established crop on a neighboring property, you might consider a mix of clovers or some of the food plot mixes that have been developed for deer, turkeys, and other wildlife. The greatest key to a successful food plot is to take adequate soil samples and adhere to their recommendations. Fruit-bearing and mast-bearing

trees and shrubs are a very beneficial addition to any habitat improvement site. Generally speaking, they are best planted along edges — either just outside food plots or along woodland borders. Standard apple trees, mulberry, and wild pear trees bear well in our area. Butternut trees, a wide variety of oak trees and recently developed strains of blight-resistant chestnut trees are good producers also. A variety of shrubs that can either be interspersed with the tree seedlings or planted in clumps by themselves will benefit wildlife. Consider elder-

berries, American hazelnut, Mountain ash or Serviceberries as additions to your habitat improvement efforts. Caution: All of these tree and shrub seedlings are vulnerable to browsing by deer and rodents. You will need to provide some degree of protection and maintenance for them for several years until they are well established. Planning now for these springtime activities will help chase away the winter doldrums, and by the time you lay out your game plan and order your materials, it will be time to get outside and start planting!

If you are fortunate enough to have logging roads running through your woods, these roadbeds and roadsides are prime locations to plant grasses, clovers and other legumes, which not only provide a food source for wildlife but also help prevent soil erosion. Off to the sides of these logging roads is another excellent spot to build log piles or brush piles for nesting and escape locations for small game and birds. Great rewards will come by upgrading abandoned fields if they exist on your property. It is good to leave some

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

The Striped Skunk

T

his week’s article stinks! Whether you are an outdoors person or not we have all had the opportunity to whiff the little black and white critters greatest defense mechanism — scent. It’s not at all unusual to be driving down the road and encounter a fresh road killed skunk and depending on which way the wind is blowing you may get the added treat of the skunk’s repulsive musk permeating the vehicle and your nostrils. The roadkill is about as close as most people will get to the repulsive odor, but on occasion, an encounter can be a lot more intimate. I remember well a close encounter of the worst kind years ago when my goose-hunting buddy and I walked through a freshly plowed field well before daylight to reach our desired hunting location. It

was so dark we could barely see each other as we plodded along kicking soft chunks of sod and dirt out of the way. As I kicked one particularly soft but heavy chunk of sod out of the way, it suddenly donned on Ken me that it wasn’t a chunk Hunter of sod. What brought me to that realization was the sudden shower of liquid that hit me square in the face and all over the front of my camouflaged rain gear. The hunt came to an abrupt end followed by a lengthy discussion as to how I would make the three-mile trek home. We finally came to a compromise, and I was able to ride in the bed of his truck to get back home. Getting into the house or anywhere near it was yet another challenge. My wife threw out a change of clothes, some plastic garbage bags and an assortment of

nozzle-like ducts, which protrude through the anus. A skunk can shoot musk about twelve feet but the truth is the spray is usually a last resort, but more often a skunk prefers to bluff an enemy instead by snarling and raising its tail. Obviously kicking one up alongside the head in the dead of night merits a much more significant action and not just a bluff. A skunk’s musk is highly repellent to all mammals; it can even make a predator sick. If the liquid

substance gets into an animal’s eyes, it can even cause temporary blindness. In spite of their potent musk predators like foxes, bobcats, coyotes and even domestic dogs — hopefully occasionally take them not your dog. Great horned owls, which lack a well-developed sense of smell apparently, are not bothered by the skunk’s musk. While skunks can live in a variety of habitats, they tend to prefer mixed woods and brushland, fencerows and rolling weedy fields.

Putting you first is our policy.

LET’S TALK TODAY.

We keep your best interests in mind.

Cornfields and freshly plowed fields are feeding areas (yeah, I know) where they find grasshoppers, grubs, beetles and other insects. They will also eat frogs, toads, spiders, snakes, lizards and mice, and even fruits and other plants. Skunks feed at night and may range up to a half-mile from their home burrow. By the way, skunks are also fond of residential areas — my advice is if walking in the dark, don’t kick any big sods!

THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs.

cus on fishing, hiking or golf. My soon to be 10-year-old son is my pride and joy. He stars on these pages quite often. Jensen is a great looking kid who plays Xbox and participates in several sports. He too loves the outdoors and is halfway through the fourth grade. Jensen is so dang spoiled and has thousands of toys. He is at a fun age, and you can’t make up what he sometimes says or does. Jensen provides some great material for this column. I enjoy sharing his experiences with little Biddy Basketball and Little League. My lovely bride is also great, and we make one heck of a team. But she doesn’t like the spotlight, so I often refrain from using her name. Many have even encouraged us to start a blog. Maybe someday. I would like to wish all of the area the very best. 2018 was a blast, and there were so many interesting stories. I have no major plans in 2019, but I am excited to sign on for another year with Sporting Matters. Cheers.

My favorite place to scribe is on a park bench alongside the Susquehanna River. I usually go there an hour before my deadline, and thankfully you can enjoy the view without being a member. I admit. I sometimes struggle with certain deadlines. Several of my former teachers and my spunky editor would agree. Some say its procrastination. I prefer to call it a minor delay in motivation. I always have great intentions, but life seems to get in the way. We all have our New Year’s resolutions. While some want to get fit or watch their spending — I am just hoping to hit my deadline. My topics vary, but they usually have something to do with sports. If I am not writing about an outstanding individual, I tend to fo-
