2020 The Reality of a Futuristic Odyssey

H

appy New Year, everybody! I find it surreal that we’re in the year 2020. In my mind, that sounds like the perfect title for a science fiction movie. Maybe it takes place right here in the United States. Aliens begin to invade our Country, and I’m talking about from another galaxy, not from South of the border. Although I guess space aliens would also be considered illegal aliens. As the movie begins, our Nation is divided between those who believe in One Nation under God and its freedom as intended by our forefathers. And by those that believe these freedoms should be constricted for a larger form of government. A Nation where everything is free to everyone, no matter of your contribution to society. This battle has reached the point of impasse, where the President is under attack as are all those that believe in the American Dream as intended. As the movie continues, the two-party system and its supporters that make up our Country refuse to find middle ground. Things gradually worsen. They finally reach the point where our Country loses focus and forgets there are true enemies out there that want to destroy all that is Red, White, and Blue. All that our Nation represents and stands for. It seems somehow the words compromise and united have become four-letter words to

many that exist within our boundaries. At the very last minute, when it seems America will destroy itself and fall into the abyss, a blessing in disguise arrives. Alien spaceships, and no, they did not travel up from another country, they’re from another galaxy, invade and want to take every natural resource from sea to shining sea. They view us as simply the ignorant ingrates that don’t appreciate these blessings, or understand that together we’re strong, divided we fall, and that all is earned nothing is given. Besides, we are viewed as food to them on their planet. Of course, then the miraculous happens. The greatest threat against everybody’s personal liberty and actual existence brings America back together. United in a way that hasn’t been seen since 9/11, Democrats and Republicans work together to save themselves from the space invaders. As the movie ends President Trump embraces Nancy Pelosi, the American flag waving against the bright blue sky. Miss Pelosi saying, “I just didn’t understand Donald. I apologize for the breach in National Security I have caused.” President Trump embracing her saying, “Didn’t you read my Tweet? I told you this would happen.” And they all live happily ever after, still not understanding the plight of the everyday American. Yes, I know, there’s a better chance of little green men showing up in Washington

than house Speaker Pelosi and President Trump embracing. I was going to say hugging, but that made me feel too uncomfortable. I apologize to the creators of Independence Day and a couple of episodes of the Twilight Zone for using some of Jim their material. I left out Webb, Jr. a couple of interesting scenes, one as Miss Pelosi and her followers try to convince the President, “They come in peace, and we should negotiate with them.” And the other as President Trump jumps into a jet fighter and takes off to blow up the alien mothership. Before leaving, he gives Speaker Nancy the one finger up, all American salute. Anyway, as the calendar reads 2020, I just wanted to start everybody off with a little science fiction for thought and maybe a laugh. I thought it was most fitting the new decade was ushered in with that unmistakable music accompanied by the voice of Barbara Walters. This is 20/20. It just seemed like the perfect pairing. What did not was how many people on TV wanted to imitate her. This, to me, was the watering down of an iconic moment, especially when Whoopi Goldberg wouldn’t let it alone. The year 2020 is going to move by at warp speed. With so much happening across our Country and around the world, who

knows what the next day will bring. We are all so very blessed to be watching what is happening from our friendly confines of the West Branch Valley. There’s no place in the world I would rather be. As the world goes mad on the outside, we must stand together, work together, and allow nothing to divide us here at home. Political discussion and debate are as red, white, and blue as the American flag. We must all agree to disagree and love one another. Political disagreements may occur at the family table, where I recommend politics are not talked about. They always will take place within local government where those sworn to duty are intended to govern for “We the People”. Heck, it might just be two guys sitting at the end of the bar enjoying an ice-cold longneck. Just because they have differing political views doesn’t mean one should smash that bottle of Bud over the other guy’s head. Political poppycock will definitely take place on social media, to which I just shake my head and have no comment. We must always feel free to have open discussions and different views, that’s the American way. But most importantly, these must be checked at the door, in the name of country, family, friendship, and community. All must understand freedom is not free. This is what has made our little corner of Penns Woods such a special place. We have always been able to shake hands, share some laughs, and not allow political differences to divide. God Bless America.

Another New Year

W

Founder James Webb Sr. 1944-2012

ow! I can’t believe that it is 2020. It’s hard to believe that we are entering a new decade. At least we entered this one without all of the Y2K drama of the last. Here at Webb Weekly we are entering our 18th year. I get a little choked up thinking that Webb Weekly is officially an adult! We’ve made a fair amount of changes here over the years, but at our core we are still abiding by the same philosophy that we started with. A family-oriented publication that strives to bring you all the good our community has to offer. Thank you for sticking with us for the better part of TWO DECADES. The unwavering support we get from the community never ceases to amaze me. As we roll into another year, I once again send out the call for your contributions! If you, or someone you know has a great story to tell, please let me know! If you, or someone you know has done something amazing in or for our community, please let me know! We want to help share your stories. I also want to thank all of our advertisers. Without you, we wouldn’t be here. The support that you given us over the years has been astounding. We all work so hard to put out the best publication possible

Publisher/Sales James A. Webb Jr. jwebb@webbweekly.com 570-337-0755 Editor Steph Nordstrom 570-337-0759 webbnews@webbweekly.com

each week so that you see more customers and so that our readers are happy. It’s amazing to see all the advertisers that have been with us from Steph the very beginning. Nordstrom The foundation that they helped us build is how we keep going every week. Another Visit From Don Every now and again I get a visit from my friend Don. Don comes to see me to request help to get the word out about an ongoing problem in the area. That problem is trash. See, Don lives on the outskirts and between where he lives and where he hunts, he spends more time cleaning up other people’s trash than he does enjoying the outdoors. So once again, I’m here to remind you to clean up after yourselves. I’m not sure what would make people think that the area near Rose Valley and beyond is the perfect place to dump trash, garbage and whatever else, but it has to stop. People, this is ridiculous! If you are driving into rural areas with the express purpose of dumping your trash, you should be absolutely ashamed and more

than a little embarrassed. Don, his wife, his kids, and grandkids are picking up trash BY THE TRUCKLOAD on a regular basis. Over the years Don has picked up over 600 tires, tons of trash, parts of cars and more recyclables than you can imagine. The recyclables are what really gets me. How many drop-offs did you pass on your way to dump your trash on someone else’s property? And a lot of this trash is being dumped on State Game Land, so that’s ALL OF OUR PROPERTY! I’ve said it before — recycling is FREE! In some cases, depending on the material, places like Staiman’s will PAY YOU!! And instead, there are people out there driving out of their way to drop trash on someone else! According to Don, dumping isn’t the only problem. A lot of the trash he’s picking up is coming from disrespectful people who are just chucking their garbage out car windows as they are driving around. Really y’all? Is it that much of a hardship to keep your trash in your car until you can find an appropriate place to get rid of it? Do you have any idea how many trash cans are around? USE THEM! We have one planet on which to live. We can all do better at taking care of it. So if you are out and see trash lying around, pick it up and dispose of it properly. Or, at the very least, don’t add to the problem. Dispose of your own trash and recyclables properly.

Uptown Music Collective Unites Student Music Teachers and Kids Through STOMP By Dave Bellomo

A

long with developing talented musicians, the Uptown music collective aims to help develop wellrounded citizens who value leadership and responsibility. One of their main initiatives toward this aim is their Student Teacher Outreach & Mentoring Program, better known as STOMP. STOMP will be once again offering free private music instruction for students 5 - 10 years of age and who might not otherwise be able to afford private lessons. These half-hour, peer to peer lessons, are taught by experienced and specially trained Uptown Music Collective student volunteers. For over 19 years, the Uptown Music Collective has grown from what many used to call “the best-kept secret in the Williamsport area,” to one of the area’s most highly respected, non-profit, educational organizations. While the school is dedicated to providing a wellrounded education to students of all

ages, it focuses many of its programs on students ages 10 – 18. The Uptown Music Collective is known for its positive peer group, inspiring teachers, and a diverse multitude of performance opportunities. “An important part of a music education should include a deep appreciation for your gift of music,” said Dave Brumbaugh, the nonprofit school’s founder and executive director. “A sense of both gratitude and understanding of the importance of giving back, by both sharing it with an audience and passing it on. This program gives our students, who have been given so much through the support of our community, another chance to give back.” STOMP has enjoyed a partnership with the Firetree Place after school program over the past several years. Where both Firetree’s participants and the Uptown Music Collective Student Teachers & Mentors have had a lot of fun sharing music together. “The Uptown Music Collective is

Space in the program is limited due to the UMC’s hectic schedule, so interested families should apply as soon as possible. “We truly hope that those interested take the opportunity to participate in this great community-based program,” said Breanne Eisenhardt, UMC S.T.O.M.P. extremely excited to offer this program to our community,” said Jared Mondell, Assistant Executive Director of the Uptown Music Collective. “It not only helps S.T.O.M.P. students connect with music, but it also allows us to continue to further our mission with our current students by giving them an opportunity to give back. To facilitate the needs of the Student Teachers, the program will once again take place in the Uptown Music Collective’s facility at 144 West Third Street in Downtown Williamsport. Looking Back On Some of My Most Interesting Stories From 2019 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

B

esides being the end of the decade, 2019 was an interesting year. During this year, I was fortunate enough to have written many stories that I hope the readers of Webb Weekly found enjoyable. I want to look back now on some of my favorite and most notable stories from the year just passed. Several stories I wish I did not have to write. They were my tributes to some

notable figures who passed from the scene in 2019. In February, I paid tribute to “Mr. Flag,” Tony DiSalvo. Tony carried his patriotism and his love of country around like the ever-present American flag that he loved and carried with so much pride during the annual Flag Day Parade that now bears his name. I was able to collect and print some tributes from some people who knew and loved Tony so much. Perhaps no one in this county has been more zealous and

diligent in promoting patriotism and love for his country’s flag and celebrating the goodness of America than Tony did. Another giant, who did so much to enrich our community, the “People’s Pastor,” Father John Manno, I wrote about him after his death in May. Father John was one of the most beloved people in this area who earned that love and respect naturally. Perhaps no one in the faith community in this area has contributed more to the spirit of ecumenism and sense of community in this area than Father John K. Manno. He was ordained as a priest more than 50 years ago and left a hard-to-measureimpact on others. He was a voice of

decency, tolerance, and compassion to the parishes, and communities that he has served. It is his very passion and understanding during a time in which these qualities in these polarizing times are in seeming short supply that helped make him such an exceptional figure. In June, I noted the passing of a racial pioneer from Williamsport, Captain Chancellor “Pete” Tzomes, the first African-American to command a U.S. Navy nuclear submarine. I had gotten to know Pete after writing an article about him for Webb Weekly back in June of 2014. I had maintained

LOOKING BACK fairly close contact with him via phone and email since then. I found him to be a man of class, dignity, and he had boundless love for the country that he served with pride and distinction. “Pete” Tzomes did not like to be told that he can’t or is incapable of doing something. It only makes him more determined and tenacious to do what he was told he couldn’t do. It is the grit and highly developed sense of purpose that would help him overcome various hurdles that would make him the first African-American to command a nuclear submarine in the United States Navy. It has been said that success can be the best revenge, but Pete Tzomes never sought revenge for some of the various indignities he had to endure, all he wanted was respect, and he certainly earned that through his great abilities, his determination and his leadership skills. In August, I noted the death of “Jack” Person, former President and Publisher of the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. He was part of a vanishing breed of community leaders and philanthropists that has helped make the Greater Williamsport area such a wonderful place to live. Jack built upon the doctrine he learned at the knee of his father John

Sr. It was the view that “those to whom much is given, much is expected.” He understood that he had an obligation to give back, and to serve his community and others, and to do so while not seeking praise or adulation. One of the enduring contributions he made to this area was his pivotal role in keeping Little League Baseball and its World Series here in the late 1950s when the organization was considering a move to New York City. Offices were offered to Little League in Brooklyn by Walter O’Malley, owner of the recently departed Brooklyn Dodgers. Jack worked hard to find a new location and to help line up the help from local businessmen, including the Lamade family, owners of Grit, to finance the acquisition and development of the property where the Little League complex now stands. I am very grateful for Webb Weekly for allowing me to write a tribute to my beloved wife, Mary, on the occasion of the fifth anniversary of her death. It was very healing and comforting for me. 2019 was the 50th anniversary of some notable happenings, and it is from this that I derived my greatest enjoyment from writing stories about the milestone year of 1969. The most fun I had was writing about

LOOKING BACK the 50th reunion of that magical 1969 Newberry team that represented the East in that year’s Little League World Series. I knew many of these great guys. We were the same age, and some had gone to school with me. It was great seeing them again. Rusty Sechler’s kitchen table was littered with photographs, newspaper clippings, and various other artifacts from the 1969 Newberry Little League’ All-Stars World Series team and its run to that Series. But at that same time, there was the laughter, stories, and memories of the players from that team that gathered at Rusty’s house on the eve of this past year’s Little League World Series. The joy these Newberry 69’ers felt was amply apparent to those who saw them atop their trailer in the Grand Slam Parade. It was interesting and fun to recount various local resident’s memories of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing. The moon landing was a moment of great awe and wonderment, and it was marvelous to contemplate that such a thing with all its daunting challenges could be accomplished. It was a time of magic, and it is time that I look back on with a great sense of nostalgia and pride in what America could do when it concentrated all of its efforts. I hope

that we can again have that great cando and sense that all things are possible philosophy. One of the most interesting stories I did this year was on Susan Durrwachter, a producer at CNN. She has been a witness to history, filming one of the planes that flew into the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, to rubbing elbows with generals, and celebrities such as Willie Nelson, Oprah Winfrey, Donald Trump, Aretha Franklin, the Jacksons, Rod Stewart, and Matt Damon. She said that hard work and preparation was the secret to her success. The most heartwarming story was that marking the 60th birthday of longtime and avid Loyalsock High School athletics fan, Pedie McDonald. Pedie is a beloved figure, not only in Loyalsock Township but throughout the Greater Williamsport area. This amply demonstrated at his birthday celebration at the Loyalsock Volunteer Fire Company in which more than 150 well-wishers gathered. His mother summed Pedie up, saying, “He is convinced that everyone is glad to see him, and he treats everyone with respect. That is how he approaches life.” What a wonderful lesson for us all. In these divisive and contentious times, the world could use more Pedie McDonalds.

exercise. The majority of the benefit comes from your first exposure to a perceived stress. There is benefit to performing multiple sets, but there is also a sharply diminishing return. Go slow. For the sake of technique and safety, each repetition should be performed slowly, with control, and should take 4-6 seconds each. Your goal is to get tired enough that you cannot perform another repetition with good form. Breath! Every repetition gets one breath. Keep your program simple. While strength training can be extremely complex, for the average person, it doesn’t have to be. The more streamlined your program, the less likely you will overtrain or become injured. Perform a handful of large muscle group exercises that are challenging and within the outlined parameters, 2-3 days per week, with rest between sessions. If something hurts (sharp injury pain), stop. You can always find another exercise that works for you. Virtually anyone has the ability to grow stronger with a little effort and some knowledge. While the methods we choose to gain strength may vary to some degree, I have outlined a handful of principles that have served me well over the years, and I am confident they will help you as much as they have helped me. One last note would be to have fun as you are much more likely to stick with an activity if it is enjoyable. Workout with a friend, listen to music or take an exercise class. Do whatever you need to do, make strength training a regular part of your life. Good luck and good lifting! Dave Bellomo welcomes your comments and can be reached at dave.bellomo@gmail.com.

perform strengthening exercises to take the place of gravity. You need to push yourself to a point where your body perceives a stress. This stress might be in the form of slightly more weight, more repetitions, shorter rest breaks, more exercises, new exercises, etc. over time. If you don’t push yourself, your body has no reason to adapt or become stronger. That being said, the stress should be only slightly more than that to which you are accustomed. Do not make big changes in weight or volume all at once. Small changes over time add up to big results! Rest. Your body needs rest to make improvements. The gains we make come after an exercise session, not during it, and are our body’s way of adapting to the stress we placed upon it during exercise. Exercise, rest, repeat. Start by strength training 2-3, non-consecutive days per week for intense workouts. Programs can get more complicated involving back-to-back workouts, but these are for more advanced exercisers. Curls won’t cut it. Pick 8-12 exercises, and be sure to work all of your major muscle groups. Exercises such as squats, deadlifts, presses, and rows are the foundation of any good program. Build muscle at any age. Most people should use a moderate weight. Perform 8-12 repetitions per exercise for general strength and muscle development. If you can achieve 12 repetitions of an exercise, with good form, increase the weight next time. If you cannot, increase the repetitions next time. * A repetition is one complete movement of a weight or machine. A set is a group of repetitions. Quality over quantity. Perform 1-3 sets per

ne of my favorite exercises at the end of the year is to review all my columns throughout the year. I began writing LION (Leaders In Our Neighborhood) features in April of 2014, and I am always surprised how each year seems to have a certain theme. In 2018, it was good people passing away. That certainly occurred this year

with the departure of Father Manno. There are few individuals that had an impact on an entire region as much as that man. But this year I found that there were more young LIONS than all the previous years combined. There was the freshman from Penn College named Noah Shuey, who was given a motorcycle when he went off to college. He heard about the 911 Ride and wanted to participate. He had a patriotic

He told me after it was over, “It was amazing, seeing all those people, mile after mile, I did not realize that there were so many people who still cared about America that way. very bright future. The crown jewel of the young LIONS is far and away, 12-year-old Loyalsock resident Jacob Stopper. Though he has cerebral palsy, which impacts his fine motor skills, especially on his right side, Jacob’s mind is razor-sharp. He has a more profound vocabulary than anyone his age that I have ever met, and his knowledge of American politics and history is encyclopedic. Scott Metzger, running for Lycoming County Commissioner, and Eric Beiter, running for Williamsport city mayor, both made Jacob their honorary campaign chairman. However, when I interviewed Jacob, it sure seemed that he did not take his position as honorary as he outlined his strategy in amazing detail. I can’t remember having more fun doing an interview than the one with Jacob. As my years creep rapidly upward, it is extremely satisfying to recognize so many young leaders emerging in our community, as they are the lifeblood of hope. s a tribute to George C. Lyter and in order to permit the faculty members to attend, Montoursville schools will dismiss at noon today. Mr. Lyter served as supervising principal of Montoursville schools from 1918 to 1950, when he retired and moved to Florida. He died in the Harrisburg Polyclinic Hospital Sunday. Thirty-six of the 50 teachers in the Montoursville Area School Joint Junior and High School and the elementary schools taught under Mr. Lyter. Practically all of the teachers plan to motor to the Barners Church, near Liverpool to attend the services at 3 p.m. The teachers’ group will be headed by Francis McCanna, present supervising

principal. Mr. McCanna came to Montoursville in September 1950. McCanna came here to succeed Ralph C. Smith as elementary principal. A large delegation of members of the Montoursville Rotary Club, the Bethany Lutheran Church and other residents motored to Port Royal for the viewing. School records show that in 1919 the first graduating class of Montoursville High School under Mr. Lyter, there were eight boys and two girls. The total high school enrollment was between 90 and 100. Mr. Lyter was also instrumental in the planning of the present stone high school which was completed in 1931. He was interested in athletics and it was largely through him that basketball and football was inaugurated at Montoursville schools. Mr. Lyter also taught part-time in addition to his administrative duties.

God bless I went to Weis on Lycoming her, she was running around like a Creek Road about lunch time to get crazy person trying to keep up. I felt some Christmas candy on sale and so bad for her. She got emotional, and just went to the self-checkout. Some I asked her if I could help clear tables lady, one self check out down from for her. She appreciated the offer and me scanning her items was all pissy giggled as she wiped tears from her and talking to herself saying, “This is eyes, saying that her and her husband bullcrap and blah blah blah.” (And that’s were supposed to go out and finish me putting it nicely!) No clue what her shopping, but because a worker who issue was. She then got madder and was never showed up for their shift, she looking for help. A girl who worked couldn’t go. So, her hubby was helping there walked around the corner and her bus tables for a while before we got this lady says, “HEY YOU! Come over there. (How sweet was he to do that?) here. I need help.” Like are you kidding But how rude and irresponsible of this me lady!? Were you raised in a barn!? person to not show up for their job. No, that’s insulting to animals because The day before Christmas Eve no less. they would never treat a human like Like this lady had nothing better to do this woman did with this poor young but to cover her shift. What are we coming to? If someone holds a door for you, say thank you. If someone lets you out in your vehicle in busy traffic, a hand wave of thanks means a lot. If you need help from a worker, ask politely. Remember, they are just like me and you. We all have feelings. And if you have a job, and they count on you, show up. I mean, it’s that easy. If you have an attitude, and you are going to be nasty, then just stay home. We need more positive, kind people who are going to make a difference in someone’s day. Even just a smile to a stranger can change somebody’s day. Let’s be a little kinder and make the world a better place. The Roving Sportsman… It’s Not Too Early By Jon Pries

W

hether you are going to be hunting on public or private property this spring, and whether you are hunting at an old familiar haunt or trying out a new location, here are some tips to guide you through to a more successful spring season in the big woods of northcentral Pennsylvania. Pre-season Preparation: One of the greatest keys to being successful in putting a spring gobbler in your gamebag is the work you do before the season even opens. In particular, I am referring to preseason

scouting. Even throughout the winter, knowing the location of turkeys is important. Yes, they will move and disburse from their wintering areas, but keeping tabs on their whereabouts from the post-fall season until just before the beginning of the spring season will help predict where your best set-up may be come opening day. From time to time, as Mother Nature paints the landscape with newly fallen snow, you should be spending as much time as possible walking through your favorite hunting areas, looking for signs and listening for the first gobbles of the season. Spring seeps and early runoff areas are great spots to located signs of recent activities

by turkeys that may be traveling through your woods and stopping there in search of insects and soft, new shoots. After the sparse availability of food throughout the winter months, flocks will travel miles in search of food, and will often leave behind large plots of woods that are heavily scratched from their searching for and feeding on left-over acorns and maple seeds, as well as cherry and grape seeds. Concentrate your time in forested areas that are abundant in oaks, particularly white oaks, and on hillsides and bottoms where grapevines are located. As you travel along abandoned logging roads and visit openings along these roadways, be alert for droppings and for scrape marks in the dirt from the wingtips of old Toms as they strut for their harem of hens. Tools of the Trade:

The most important things to carry with you are a good pair of binoculars, and especially if you are in a location that is new to you, a handheld GPS can be invaluable. As you slip through the woods looking for turkeys or any related signs of their activities, binoculars will help you spot turkeys before they spot you. After all, the last thing you want to do is alert them to your presence and begin to put pressure on them before the season even opens. By walking the ridges and glassing over the sides to the benches below, you will frequently see turkeys loafing along before they have the opportunity to catch your movement. The GPS can quickly and accurately pinpoint where you have seen turkeys, designate a location to begin your route for hunting, or mark a location of a superior vantage point where you can sit and glass for turkeys. This hand-held device can

In Memory of Lee Smith Lee Smith as we knew him

S

mith moved to the farm 30 years ago. It was his idea that we start a shelter for unwanted and abused animals. In 1994 the Meow House came into existance. Smith was one of the most devoted volunteers. For 25 years Smith would run animals to the vet, pick up meds, haul food and help with their care. He has 2 rescued horses here and his beloved dog Foxey Long Legs who has seizures. When 911 called to say they found his daughter Debbie had died in her trailer, it was Smith and I that went over and rescued her cat and kittens. When Smith got sick, his wish was to stay here (he called it his safe place) and not go to a nursing home. Bob, Nick and Judy promised that would not happen, he would stay here. With the Lee Smith (12/7/19) help of Hospice, the most wonderful organization in the world, we were able to grant his wish. They were there for us 24-7. In spite of all we had for him: hospital bed, wheelchairs, etc, he passed away peacefully on my recliner. We will miss Smith sitting on the Porch every day of his life, no matter what season, or how nice or bad the weather was, smoking his cigarette and watching the wildlife. That was his favorite thing in the world to do, and then telling all the neighbors about all the bucks or fawns he would see. Over the years, he saw several fawns being born in the field above that porch. We will miss him hopping in his little white truck, driving to the bottom of our mountain as he would say “just to check things out.” One day when I went out to the porch when Smith was so sick, he cried and said I am going to miss you guys. I said “Oh Smith I don’t think people in heaven miss us on the other side.” That same does not go for us, it hurts, we are devastated and I miss him beyond comparison. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you Hospice, Bob and Nick for helping me make his last wish come true. So Smith GoodBye for now, enjoy your new life in heaven, until we all meet again on the other side.

We Love You - Judy, Nick and Bob.

If there was no return call from a gobbler, he would immediately move on. Now, here’s the kicker. Each of the three times, as we began to walk to a new location, within 100 yards, we would flush a gobbler! Yep, every time he called, the birds responded by coming to us, but they did so silently. Sure, we had located three different gobblers, but more importantly, we had educated all of them to be more wary next time when responding to a call. If you must use a call of some kind, use a locator call, such as a crow call or owl call. You may or may not locate a gobbler this way, but at least you won’t risk educating him to your presence and alerting him to the calls of a hunter. The hiking and scouting that you do now will also get you in shape for opening day, when the last thing you want to do is huff and puff your way in pursuit of an Old Tom!

also direct you via the shortest direction back to your vehicle if you get turned around or darkness begins to fall. Silence is Golden! Leave your turkey calls at home! Yes, you heard me right. While I am a big proponent of calling spring gobblers, you should really reserve the calling for once the season opens. Here’s a great example of why. Four years ago, while the spring gobbler season was still two weeks away, I accompanied a friend on a preseason scouting trip. Not once, but three times as we would approach a new area, he would get out his trusty box call and roll out a series of yelps in hopes for some kind of response from a nearby Tom. And not once, but all three times, we got the same results. My friend would make the series of yelps, then pause five minutes, then play out a second series of yelps.

ood news, Eagle Cam lovers: There’s a new nest to watch. The Pennsylvania Game Commission, HDOnTap and Comcast Business have teamed up once again to offer a new bald-eagle nest livestream for the 2019-20 nesting season. The PA Farm Country Eagle Nest livestream is set to launch Dec. 18, offering viewers worldwide 24-7 access to live video and audio captured at a bald-eagle nest in rural Pennsylvania. This livestream is in addition to the Hanover, Pa. bald-eagle livestream that HDOnTap, Comcast Business and the Game Commission launched several years ago. The Farm Country eagle nest livestream, which will be available to view through the Game Commission’s website, www.pgc.pa.gov, features two cameras, one that can be controlled remotely to capture different angles. Eagles have nested in the vicinity of this site for at least 15 years, and in most years, have successfully fledged three young. Bald eagles typically lay eggs in mid-February and, if the eggs are viable, they’ll hatch in mid- to late March, with young fledging in June, but

continuing to stop back at the nest. Game Commission Executive Director Bryan Burhans said there’s plenty of reason to get excited about the new Eagle Cam. “The Eagle Cam allows viewers to watch nature as it unfolds, in great detail and from a perspective that otherwise wouldn’t be possible,” Burhans said. “That closeness Eagle Cam viewers experience, and the unpredictability of what will happen next, are two of the reasons these livestreams are so popular. Of course, the Eagle Cam wouldn’t be possible without the support of landowners and many partners. Comcast Business and its technicians worked with the Game Commission and partner HDOnTap to provide a static IP address and provide 100 Mbps broadband service near the nesting site. “Comcast Business is proud of our continued partnership with the Game Commission and HDOnTap to provide fast, reliable and secure connectivity to the site of the farm-country nest,” said Aaron Mimran, Regional Vice President of Comcast Business. “Highperformance Ethernet connectivity allows bird lovers around the world to watch nesting season unfold in real

mong the baseball dignitaries to be gathered at the January 15 Williamsport Crosscutters annual Hot Stove Banquet will be a face many may not recognize, but as soon as he opens his mouth the recognition will most likely be there. Following the past 20 years of distinguished service as the team’s Public Address announcer the Crosscutters will be inducting Montoursville’s Rob Thomas into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. It marks the third member of the Montoursville community to be enshrined with Hall of Fame laurels in recent months with Mike Mussina entering Cooperstown and brother Mark honored by the West Branch Valley Chapter

Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame. When reminded of the trio, the appreciative Thomas responded, “Thank you very much, but I don’t consider myself anywhere near the sports accomplishments of the others!” “I never gave it a thought. When I was notified about it you could have knocked me over with a feather. It was a big surprise as much as anything. I had no idea that anything like this would ever happen to me. I just go to the ballpark every game to have my fun and do my job. I am really honored to think that I will now be included in a group with Bill Pickelner, Thomas Richardson, Frank Lucchesi and a host of others who have done so much for professional baseball at Bowman Field.”

nine-inning baseball game. But I can’t say that there is any one thing that I enjoy more than any other part. “About 95% of the announcements made during a game are scripted as the Crosscutters are like any enterprise that has sponsors. Throughout the game there are occasions where the various sponsors are recognized. “When I arrive at the ballpark the job routine is pretty standard. The first thing is to make sure I have the lineups for the game setup and have the music for the game in order. We have what is called a ‘game day script’ that I review to make sure I am up to date on any changes that may have been made from the previous game. We begin playing music at 5:30 p.m. before the gates are even opened. Once the gates open at 6:00 p.m. until the start of the game at 7:05 p.m. we have the scripted announcements to make in

Thomas Named to Bowman Field HOF

Thomas’ Crosscutters relationship began when his late wife, Kathy, saw a notice posted on the bulletin board at her Clear Channel workplace that the team was looking for a public address announcer. She made the suggestion that Rob should apply for the position. That was twenty years ago and the Scott rest, as they say, is history. Lowery “It has been great and there are many things I really enjoy,” Thomas said. “The people I work with, the people that I get to see almost every night and the fans that come to the games. It really is a disc jockey type job. I play music, read commercials and keep things moving during a

a big American flag out on the field that was being held by several people. When it came time to play the anthem I hit the button and nothing happened. After a brief pause I made an announcement to the crowd that due to technical difficulties the anthem wasn’t working and suggested we would sing it together and I started singing the anthem. Luckily, the crowd joined in and we sang the anthem. “Over the years the Crosscutters have meant an awful lot to me, there is no question about that. For the people that are Crosscutters fans and loyalists it is something they can do for an evening. They get to know the players because they are here all summer. For even the casual fan it is a nice evening out. It is what I used to call a cheap date. You can get box seats tickets for $8.00 and even if you are not a big baseball fan it is an entertaining evening. To me that is the

beauty of minor league baseball. Sometimes we kid that a Crosscutters game is nine innings of entertainment interrupted by a baseball game.” For a quarter of a century Thomas has been the public address announcer for a variety of Montoursville High School sports, is now in his third year as the event announcer for Penn College sports and serves as one of the PA announcers each August for the Little League World Series. His talents have also been heard at the Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Maryland where for the past several years he has been the PA voice of the Maryland State Baseball championships. For Thomas, helping the Crosscutters extends beyond the press box. For the past three years he has opened his home to host several Crosscutters players each summer. In keeping with his new HOF profile his house guests have included

the Phillies 2018 Number 1 draft pick third baseman Alex Bohm and Spencer Howard, a 2017 second-rounder now considered as one of the Phillies top rated pitching prospects. Its’ been said ‘tis better to be seen than heard.’ For those attending the Hot Stove Banquet, Rob Thomas will be staring in both capacities.

conjunction with what Gabe Sinicropi may be doing on the field prior to the game. “One of the things now being done is most of the players have their own ‘walk-up music.’ To the players that is one of the most important things. They will submit what they would like to have as their walk-up music to Gabe and he reviews their requests to make sure it is family friendly music. Those choices are then put into the computer. It becomes my job to make sure I am playing the correct cut when each player comes up to bat. Sometimes a player might have several songs that he wants played for each time he comes to bat. But it is all in fun and it all runs thru Gabe.” When asked about any microphone bloopers he might have been a part of Thomas smiled fondly in remembrance. “One night we had a big crowd and we had

Sporting Matters With Spence…

An Ode to Curtis

I

t is hard to fathom that I made it to another decade. This is my sixth sports fans. I don’t know about you, but I personally struggle with bringing in the new year. My resolutions usually get tossed by January 11th. I have every intention of eating healthy or getting buff. I also try to spend more quality time with family and fewer minutes on technology. I promise to try much harder after I finish up season 1 of the Mandolarian on Disney. It’s only the fourth time watching it. So I’m not allowed to handle the checkbook. My lovely bride might tell you different, but I truly believe it’s all because I never know what damn year it is. True story. UNFORTUNATELY, WE CANNOT ACCEPT THIS. Insufficient funds? Dang, you

guys are good. NO. IT’S NOW 2020 SIR. The high school hoops season is in full swing. The Saint John Neumann Regional Academy Golden Knights are keeping me busy. Five games over the next eight nights. Yes. We even play on Sundays. There is always something going on, but I am thoroughly enjoying my time on the sidelines. We have a great group of boys. Old age? Grey hairs? Tight pants? Who knows. But I have been very nostalgic this winter. Every time we are on the road- I often think back to a previous adventure — many familiar places. The team and I were on the bus en route to a game in the Northern Tier, and I had one of those surreal flashbacks. A

deja vu experience that I’ve been in this situation before. Everything was confirmed when I stepped foot in the gym. Yes. Now I totally remembered. Turn back the clock 12 years, and I was the hoops coach at Montoursville High. The Warriors were off to a great start, and this was the Jamie most talented squad I’ve ever Spencer had. Vince Molesky was our scorer. Travis Heap steered the ship. David Krezmer was the X factor. Matt Ayers kept things entertaining. Big J Marshalek grabbed rebounds. Dale Upright was homeschooled. Eric Flood fouled kids. Cody Haupt was our athlete, and Curtis Jacobson was our leader. We were very solid and had a tremendous year. We beat Sock, SJNRA, and even upset the Port that season. City champs boys and girls. We made T-shirts. I keep in touch with several players who were on that team. One of my favorites stayed local and is now a teacher at Loyalsock High School. My man also coaches the varsity girls’ basketball team. Curtis Jacobson wasn’t our most talented player, but he was brilliant. He understood the game and played great defense. Jacobson was a natural, and he led by example. He was a total team player and did whatever was needed to increase our chances. Curtis was another coach on the floor. Jacobson has been very successful at the helm. He has only been at it for four years, but he already has one impressive resume. Curtis was recently named as the area’s best girl’s coach for the decade. Wait. What? Jacobson has guided a Loyalsock program to a D4 AAA and an HAC

3 crown. His teams have reached the state tournament and have advanced to the second round. The Lady Lancer’s lost four starters from last year’s 24-4 team, but they are currently 7-0 and improving each game. “It was a surprise,” Jacobson exclaimed. “It’s not about the individual accolades, but it sure was nice. There are so many deserving coaches in our area, and to be named as one of the best is quite an honor. We’ve had a great group of girls who have really brought it. They continue to work hard and are a true pleasure to coach. I owe a lot to my family. Especially my wife, who serves as my assistant coach.” Curtis and his lovely bride Keri (Datres), are expecting their first child at any moment. It’s true. She is on the staff for the girls. Kudos to them for an interesting dynamic. Some folks take part in date nights, but the Jacobsons would rather hang in the gymnasium. “We make a great team,” Curtis added. “We are very similar in our coaching styles and basketball philosophies. Keri was a great player in her day, and we both preferred to pass. Obviously, we are excited about the new addition, and we are both looking forward to parenthood.” I am awfully proud of my young friend and his career choice. His recent accomplishments and individual successes are well deserved. I already knew Curtis was well on his way, but seeing him on the sidelines is an absolute joy. Coaching goes well beyond the Xs and Os. It has nothing to do with the wins and losses, either. I truly believe that a good coach develops a lasting impact and relationship with each player. Curtis Jacobson was one of my all-time favorites. I am glad to see my old starting two-guard is doing well — much love. Congrats to you and Keri on the little one. Cheers.
