California – A Failed Example of Liberal and Socialistic Policy

M

y thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Newman, California Police Corporal Ronil Singh. The young officer lost his life during a routine traffic stop when an illegal alien with a criminal record opened fire. The K-9 handling Officer leaves behind a young wife, a five-year-old son, and a large supportive family. The sheriff investigating the shooting made it clear the incident could have been prevented, blaming California Sanctuary Law for the officer’s death. The law limits cooperation between local authorities and US immigration officials. It allows illegal aliens that are criminals to have rights they simply don’t deserve. “We can’t ignore the fact that this should have been preventable.” California Sheriff Adam Christensen told reporters. He then questioned, “Why is the state providing sanctuary for criminals and gang members?” Then concluding, “This is a conversation we need to have.” Corporal Singh’s family immigrated to our Nation lawfully in pursuit of their version of the American Dream. He’s a true American Hero; I can’t even imagine the pain his family is suffering. The state of California is clear evidence proving that far left liberalism just flat out doesn’t work. It is why hardworking, everyday Democrats need to take their party back from these liberal/socialist extremists that have hijacked the party.

Why on God’s green earth are representatives appointed from this state to chair and/or lead anything in Washington? The state of California has the largest debt of any state at over $1.3 trillion. In addition, it is estimated that they are facing a $477 billion deficit for 2019. They have the highest state income tax in the country and are ranked dead last in Quality of Life according to US News & World Report. The state possesses the 14th highest rate of unemployment. The Golden State’s Financial Stability has been tarnished as they rank 42nd nationally in this category. Homelessness is up 14%, and one-quarter of the nation’s homeless live in California, which equates to over a hundred and thirty-two thousand individuals living on the streets or in shelters. With all those tax dollars being collected, California infrastructure ranks 38th nationally, with the highest number of distressed bridges in the Nation. The state does rank 11th nationally in education, however, upon graduation they rank 46th in Post Graduate Opportunity. Just imagine, all dressed up and prepared with that hard left liberal education and nowhere to go to work. California is also among national leaders in various categories of crime. Their liberal democratic leadership has made it known they want to abolish Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Now there’s a great way to gain control of the crime rate and the illegal immigration problem.

California is on the brink of a financial disaster. Their great liberal ideals eventually will result in a federal bailout. So now let’s take a look at some of the leadership that has created this utopian society. Longtime Governor Jerry Brown left office this past November; I have yet to Jim figure out if it’s because he Webb, Jr. was too liberal, not liberal enough or just too old. His governing of the state was an absolute disaster. So what did the liberal voters of California do? Elect another Democrat hellbent on liberal extremism. The state’s long-term leaders in Washington want us to follow them to the abyss. First up, Senator Dianne Feinstein. The perfect example of why we need term limits. She’s a big believer in sanctuary cities and California being a sanctuary state. The former mayor of San Francisco has been accused of enabling the Chinese to spy on Silicon Valley. She has always had a soft spot for the Chinese culture and stated that she wanted to model the city of San Francisco after China back in her mayoral days. Recently she was the creator and one of the attempted destroyers of the Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s appointment to the Supreme Court. Next up, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi, she has eaten at the trough of the American taxpayer for 17 terms. She is simply a dreadful person. I believe she has passed Hillary as the most crooked woman in America. She is a regular on the Judicial Watch top 10 list of corrupt politicians. Her liberal ideas are as far

left as possible. She is hard to even listen to. That gets us to Representative Maxine Waters, Chair of the House Financial Services Committee. This would be the equivalent of putting the fox in charge of the hen house. She has served inside the Beltway since 1991. During the Judge Kavanaugh debacle, Maxine Waters clearly stated that someone accused of sexual misconduct is guilty. So much for the presumption of innocence. Interestingly enough Hollywood director Harvey Weinstein was a major contributor to the California Democratic Party. The aforementioned Washington regulars have been on watch as California has moved towards financial, moral and ethical bankruptcy. They honestly want us to believe that their liberal left policy and leadership is good for our Nation. All I can say, folks, is that they are an absolute threat to the America we know. We better all wake up people, or they’ll do for us what they’ve done for the state of California. California is also a perfect example of government-normalized chaos, which is the lifeblood of a liberal politician. The larger the homeless population, drug problem, illegal alien count, or rise in crime become, the more need for government to solve the problem. This is a true liberal philosophy, along with helping and providing aid to everyone, but never solving the problem. I think help is liberal code for making people dependent on government, so they continue to vote for you and government assistance. What might be most alarming is that Pennsylvania’s elected democratic contingency vote right along with these people. God Bless America.

It’s Cold-ish! Stay in and Eat!

A

year ago from writing this, it was 11 degrees, with the wind chill around -4. While the temps are still fairly mild for January in Pennsylvania, let’s not use that as an excuse to not stay in and eat. I thought about offering up a nice healthy recipe for those of you who haven’t given up on your New Year’s Resolutions yet, but where is the fun in that? It’s bound to get frigid eventually, so I thought I’d offer up some fairly simple comfort food to help get you through the winter. Let’s start with our main course. You can’t go wrong with an easy baked chicken. And, truth be told, this recipe isn’t entirely unhealthy if you are still on course to lose weight in the new year. You could easily skip the second coating on the chicken and cut the carbs making it a pretty decent chicken dish. Crunchy Baked Chicken: Ingredients: • 8 large chicken breasts, boneless and skinless • 4 cups corn flakes cereal • 2 teaspoons fresh rosemary, chopped fine (or other fresh herb, such as parsley or chives) • 2 teaspoons paprika • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt • 4 teaspoons butter, melted • 3 egg whites • 4 teaspoon milk Directions: Preheat oven to 425° F. Cover 10x15 shallow pan with foil, then spray with cooking oil. Place cereal in zippered plastic bag and crush with your hands until pieces are small. Add fresh herbs, paprika, garlic powder and seasoned salt to cereal, and toss mixture gently to dis-

Onto the side dish that I chose to go with this. Listen y’all. This is pretty much where the healthy options end. This recipe involves pasta. And cheese. And kielbasa. And bread. And beer. Ain’t no coming back from all that. But, everyone deserves a good mac and cheese every once in a while, and this one is really going to hit the spot on a cold night. Craft Beer Mac & Cheese: Ingredients: • 4 cups macaroni, cooked and drained • 1/2 small shallot, finely diced • 7 tablespoons butter • 1/4 cup Yoplait® Greek vanilla yogurt • 2 cups sharp cheddar, grated

tribute seasonings. Place in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, add melted butter, egg whites and milk. Whisk until thoroughly mixed. For each chicken breast, dip in butter mixture and Steph then roll in cereal mixture. Nordstrom Double dip in each for better coverage and extra crunch. (Remember, if you want to save calories and carb, just coat the chicken once.) Place on large shallow pan that is covered in foil and coated with cooking spray. Repeat until all 8 chicken breasts are done. Bake in a preheated oven at 350° F for 45 to 60 minutes. If coating starts getting too dark, cover with foil until final 5 minutes of baking. Remove from pan to a serving platter and serve immediately.

• 1 cup parmesan cheese, shredded • 1/3 cup light local craft beer — The SOB Hill IPA from New Trail or the Kimberwickey Kolsch from Riepstine’s would both be good options here. • 1 package (14 ounce) Kielbasa, sliced • 1 loaf Pillsbury™ refrigerated French loaf, baked and cubed • 1 clove garlic • Salt and pepper • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped Directions: Cook and drain macaroni. Set aside. In a large skillet over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons butter and add shallots. Cook for 1 minute. Whisk in the yogurt, 1 1/4 cups of cheddar, 2/3 cup of parmesan, and beer. Continue to whisk over medium heat until a creamy sauce forms. Stir sauce into cooked macaroni. Sprinkle remaining cheddar, and 1/4 cup of parmesan into the macaroni and stir that in, as well, for extra cheesiness. Wipe skillet clean, then return to hot stove. Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in the skillet over medium-high heat. Toss the sliced kielbasa into the butter and cook until browned. Transfer cooked kielbasa to the top of the mac and cheese, stir slightly to mix into the pasta and cheese sauce. Wipe skillet clean once more. Melt remaining two tablespoons of butter into the skillet. Add garlic and toss in breadcrumbs. Cook until breadcrumbs are toasted and golden on most sides. Sprinkle with pepper and a touch of salt. Spread breadcrumbs on top of mac and cheese. Sprinkle with remaining parmesan. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until cheese mixture is bubbling and breadcrumbs are firm and toasted. Serve and enjoy! Whether you wait for colder weather, or decide to stay in and cook just because it’s Wednesday, I hope you enjoy this! As always, feel free to send me your recipes to try! If they are good, you may just find them here!

set of bronze statues on all four corners of the main street downtown, sidewalk squares centered with plaques naming area sports standouts, and citizens filled with the passion of any big city considered a sports capital of this country. Williamsport is a gem tucked into the mountains of Pennsylvania, and its downtown area, displaying the city’s endless passion for sports, will be getting a newly revamped arena that will cater to those passions and then some. The Liberty Arena has been revamped to feature 12 bowling lanes, a trampoline park, a deckedout sports bar and restaurant named Scorz along with an outdoor patio,

an ice cream parlor called Screamz, an arcade with many game features, laser tag, and many other features to keep Williamsport’s fans and athletes happy, along with drawing in more people from around the state. “The Liberty Arena expanded its service offerings to cater to a broader spectrum of local patrons,” Chairman and CEO of The Liberty Group Daniel A. Klingerman said. “In addition to the already existing trampoline park and turf fields, the

venue or a field of play, the Arena is now a full-blown activity center and restaurant that literally has something for every member of the family.” The Arena could even start to expand its reach by hosting major sporting events in the area. The fact that it boasts parking, a fully functioning restaurant, and bar and enough activities to keep the family busy for hours will only help in hosting those types of functions. The new additions include, along with the Scorz Bar and Grill, 12 lanes of bowling, 50 games in the new arcade center, and the Laser Quest gameplay area. “The new attractions and expanded venue are the perfect place for families to visit,” Klingerman said. “The Liberty Area has all of these attractions under one roof, and it is full of activities to do for kids, teens, and adults.” Scorz Bar and Grill also features a full bar offering a variety of local and non-local craft beers and has a lot of daily, weekly and monthly features on tap. Liberty Arena’s expansion included Koas Fun Zone, Scorz Bar and Grill, and Laser Quest (laser tag).” Klingerman purchased the Arena in 2013 and has been building the new additions since the purchase. In 2017 he had the idea of expanding the Arena to include the restaurant and other features, and in February of this past year, construction started. The addition of all the new places will definitely expand the Liberty Arena’s offerings. It will also expand downtown Williamsport’s reach as a younger crowd will take advantage of Scorz, which features a full bar and American style cuisine. The goal will be to cater to both the hardcore sports fan as well as giving the casual fans a place to grab a solid meal. At one time the Arena featured a skating rink. It also featured the YMCA, but never really had something that would appeal to an entire family. Klingerman’s goal for the Liberty Arena will be to have something for everybody. “The Arena is now better equipped to be a gathering place for friends and family to stay and play,” Klingerman said. “Rather than just be an event

he first of a new series of programs will be inaugurated on Monday morning on WRAK. Williamsport’s local radio station, when the “Early Bird Program” goes on the air at 7:30 o’clock a.m. This program is an innovation unlike anything ever offered in Williamsport, and is built around the idea of giving information which will help householders to start the day right, interspersed with a varied musical program. The “Early Bird Program” has been scheduled at this early hour in order to be of service to people who wish to definitely know what the day may have in store for them. Mothers who have to get children ready for school will hear the condition of the weather, the temperature, the current

time; business men and women will be interested to know the weather forecast so that they may have some idea as to what weight clothing will be most comfortable, those whose work takes them downtown will know the condition of the streets and sidewalks in case of snow or ice. Other entertaining features of the program include the horoscope for the day, impersonations, music for all types and tastes — in fact anything the public wishes to hear to make pleasant the beginning of each day. The staff of local station is instituting the “Early Bird Program” with the feeling that it will take care of a real need, following out the policy of the station to give the listening public, either in way of reaction to the program, or suggestions to be incorporated in future broadcasts, will be welcomed.

Interesting to Amazing Lights on the Truth! By Tom, son of Ann and Sam

T

he farmhouse I grew up in was built in the 1880s and started out with two rooms. Through the years a kitchen was added and then later, an indoor bathroom and enclosed back porch for firewood and other storage. Originally, of course, it had no electricity. Under the leadership

of President Roosevelt, the Rural Electrification Administration (REA) started helping the “common” farmers in 1935. Most of the house had just one outlet in each room and one ceiling lamp except for the kitchen, which had extra outlets for appliances. Our house was dark at night: no night-lights, appliances with lights, or any of the other items that now keep our modern homes

well lit inside and out. Our farm during my childhood was dark, too — no security lights on our property or any others that I could see in the distance. City lights to the north were few; we could see the aurora borealis some nights. Those scared me at first, but I knew I would be safe as long as Dad was there. As a child, I could “navigate” around in the dark house quite well. I knew where things were, such as doorknobs, the stairway, and my bed. My younger brother and I would sometimes go outside in the dark. At times we would lie on our backs on a tarp or wagon and marvel at the immenseness of space and the stars. Sometimes after staring at the endless stars, I would wonder why we didn’t just drift off into space like a speck of dust or a dandelion seed? In my summer before 7th grade, Dad and I rode the train from Fort Wayne, IN to Providence, RI to visit his parents. I remember going to sleep there at twilight but waking up with this intense light coming through the window although the clock showed only midnight! I actually thought it was the second coming of Christ! I

went to the window fully expecting to see the Heavenly Host but instead saw a large light on a pole outside the window! That was the first night I ever slept anywhere with outside lights. One summer, at our tractor mechanic’s shop, I saw a small solar powered windmill and was totally amazed! It was inside a clear glass bulb, and yet it spun by just the sun’s rays hitting it. I knew then I had to experiment with solar energy for my next “Science Fair” project. I spoke with Miss Brown, the “nice” science teacher, about this and she showed me some science magazines with solar kits in them. I bought a kit from Bell Labs to make my own solar energy cells. This was a bigger “ordeal” than expected. I had to cure various layers on top of postage stamp size silicon wafers, heating them for hours in my mom’s oven at the highest temperature it would go to. I needed distilled water for washing the wafers at various steps. I thought I would just make my own by boiling water in the teapot and letting

THE REAL GOD

January 13 - March 3 Sunday Worship - 10:17am

Most people believe in God but few know who God is. Most people today go through life praying a little, attending church on occasion, serving in their own strength. They are religious; but are not really living life God’s way because they do not understand who He is. On January 13, we will begin an 8-week journey at The Gap Fellowship discovering the CHARACTER OF GOD. Each week we will look at a different character of God. A church that understands the very character of God is a powerful force.

• Week 1: Seeking God

• Week 5: God’s Wisdom

• Week 2: God’s Goodness

• Week 6: God’s Justice

• Week 3: God’s Sovereignty

• Week 7: God’s Love

Corner of Maynard Street and Third Street.

• Week 4: God’s Holiness

• Week 8: God’s Faithfulness

INTERESTING it condense by hitting a metal pot lid I was holding. All I will say about this method is that to this day I marvel at the low price of a gallon of distilled water in a store! I’m sure commercial distilled water is not refined by the same technique I tried. When I had the cells done, I took them into the school’s science lab, and Miss Brown helped me test them. With the test meter on the most sensitive settings, we found output of a few millivolts and milliamps. I

was disappointed that the cells didn’t produce more, but I had a project. I then bought two small cells from a hobby shop so I could power a small electromagnet and make a compass wiggle. Science fair night started out fine. I had my poster board and colored pencil explanations at the back of my space. I was demonstrating my project and visiting others, an interesting night. But then, in center of the display area, the “mean” science teacher loudly accused me

of destroying the multimeter I had used to test the cells. He said that this meter had cost the school over $200 and I was careless, didn’t care, was a worthless student, etc. I didn’t have any response, and it wouldn’t have mattered if I did. I felt like a toad facing a bulldozer. The whole school soon heard I did something horrible and must be a criminal. I know now that I was wrongly and unfairly accused, how would a few milliamps from a tiny solar cell ever destroy a meter? Why did this accusation have to happen in public? Needless to say, that destroyed the rest of my evening and my inner “clockwork” for days. The only good that has ever come from this is that I never accuse someone of anything without first trying to get all the details. Even then I often hesitate and say nothing. Someday the truth about all things will be known, the entirety of our lives will be brought out into the light, Apostle Paul, “Therefore judge nothing before the proper time; wait until the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men’s hearts. At that time each will receive

his praise from God.” And from Wise King Solomon, “For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil.” I’m sure this “teacher” attacked me because he saw me alone, like a young lamb separated from the flock. I know if my dad, who was a radio specialist in WW2, had been with me he would have protected me. The same for when our life is reviewed. Those of us who know Jesus and accept His Sacrifice for us will have the universe’s best lawyer beside — actually in front of us — on that day. Decades later, I can still feel the pain of being unfairly accused and publicly humiliated when I think about that meter. I have forgiven the “mean teacher” because Jesus “first forgave us” and because it’s healthy for us to let go of past hurts. What is infinitely more important, deeper than the stars on a dark night, is to focus on the one who said: “I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.”

hen noted director and actress Penny Marshall died recently, one area woman was especially saddened. Sara Jane ‘Salty’ Sands Ferguson who lives near Orangeville, a community about 10 miles north of Bloomsburg, played for the Rockford Peaches of the All American Girls Professional Baseball League in 1953 and 1954. The team and the league were the theme of the film, “A League of Their Own” in 1992. ‘Salty’ was a part of the making of that film and grew to know and respect Marshall. “I was so saddened when I saw about Penny Marshall. Oh my, she really was a great person,” ‘Salty’ told Webb Weekly. “Before she came along with the movie no one ever knew about us. I remember telling people that I had played professional baseball but no one believed me. I even missed my high school graduation to play for the Peaches. Penny with that movie changed that and all of us who ever played in the league are grateful to

her for letting the public at large know about us.” The AAGPBL was in existence from 1943 to 1954, playing in Midwest cities such as Rockford, Illinois, Kenosha, Wisconsin, South Bend, Indiana, and Kalamazoo, Michigan just to name a few. It was almost unknown until the film came along. “It was a great experience being involved in that film,” ‘Salty’ said. “I got to rub elbows with people such as Penny of course, Rosie O’Donnell, Lori Petty, and Madonna. I didn’t think much of Madonna. I thought she was kind of vulgar and she didn’t really interact with the rest of us that much.” I have known ‘Salty’ for 25 years and I felt honored and lucky when she asked me to accompany her to the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown when a celebration commemorating the 10th anniversary of the film was held there in 2002. Penny came there with several of the actors who were in the film, including Lori Petty, who played “Kit,” Megan

Cavanaugh, who played “Marla Hooch” and Penny’s daughter, Traci Reiner. There were also roughly 25 or so women ballplayers who actually played in the AAGPL. All those former players looked on Penny with great respect and affection. Every one of them expressed to her their appreciation for making a film about their league and showing people what a special experience it was to play in it, as well as rescuing it from obscurity. “Penny was really nice and never put on any airs. You never knew that she was a famous Hollywood director,” ‘Salty’ said. “She dressed really casually and never worried about hair or make up. She said she never wanted to act in a film again because then she might have to brush her hair. She was a lovely person and I can’t say enough good things about her.” I once asked ‘Salty’ if she remembered Penny being on the 1970s show, “Laverne and Shirley” and she said, “I don’t remember ‘Laverne and Shirley’ very much. I was always out playing ball, umpiring or some other baseball related activity.” “Salty,” a former school bus driver,

feels very strongly about the role of women in sports and does everything she can to promote it. She has spoken to various girls’ athletic teams, service clubs and school groups about her AAGPBL experience and always emphasizes that “If you have a dream, follow it. Don’t let a small thing like your gender stop you.” ‘Salty’ may be one of the best ambassadors for the league and the cause of women’s athletics around. ‘Salty’ believes that an article that someone sent her about Penny Marshall tells very well how important Penny thought “A League of Their Own” was to her. “Someone asked her, ‘Penny, what do you feel is your greatest accomplishment to date,’” Salty” recalled. “And Penny said, ‘Making the movie about the girls who played professional baseball during the war.” ‘Salty’ added. “I thought that was pretty nice of her to say that.” Penny is gone now but the memory of the AAGPL lives on because of her efforts in making “A League of Their Own.” For that ‘Salty’ Ferguson and many others are grateful.

ach year, the number one and number two New Year’s resolutions for Americans are to get healthy and lose weight. But only eight percent of people felt they keep that resolution beyond a few months. It is important to start 2019 with the right types of resolutions — healthy resolutions that help you reach your goals. Resolutions can be a way to push the reset button and stop some of your bad habits.

Change Your Diet Eating healthier is an essential part of a healthy and happy new year. As you recommit to good health, follow these tips to update your food choices. Eat five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables a day. The recommended amount of fruits and vegetables seems like a lot, but by filling your menu with these choices, you stay full longer. It also helps you stop reaching for the junk food you may crave. Eat less salt. The American Heart Association recommends no more

Incorporate Exercise into Your Life Exercise can help you feel better, have more energy, and add years to your life. If you are looking to be a healthier, happier you in 2019, here are tips to make exercise a part of your life. Take the stairs. If you are able, avoid the elevator. Always choose the steps to add more movement to your day. Park in the back of the lot. When you go to the store, park in the spot farthest from the entrance. The extra steps to the store can add up over time. Schedule exercise. By adding a block of

time three times a week to your calendar you are more likely to commit that time to improve your health. Find an exercise buddy. Join a gym or walk with a friend a few times a week. It gives you time to catch up and makes the time go by faster. Log your exercise. Every time you exercise, write down your activity and keep a log to help celebrate milestones. Online apps on your phone can also help you keep track. Try Myfitnesspal or Runkeeper to record your fitness routines and help keep you motivated. As you get into your new routine for health in 2019, don’t forget you aren’t alone. Your primary care doctor is there to help you. If you haven’t seen a primary care doctor in more than two years, don’t let another year go by without scheduling an appointment. If you don’t have a primary care provider, find one in your community. You may feel fine today, but it’s important to maintain a relationship with your physician so you have a partner in health. If you need to schedule your annual well visit, talk to your primary care physician. If you need help finding a primary care physician, visit UPMCSusquehanna.org. Felicia Kelly is a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) at SH Family Medicine at Warren Ave, Williamsport. To schedule an appointment, call 570326-8500.

Commit to Good Health To get 2019 off to a good start and help you establish your annual health goals, you should schedule your annual well visit with your primary care physician. It makes sense to include your doctor in the discussion about your health and wellness goals. It can help you stay on track so you aren’t part of the 92 percent that abandons your resolutions. It also allows you to have a discussion with your doctor about changes in your health, preventive care, or screenings that may be appropriate.

As you commit to good health, some bad habits to need stop immediately. If you smoke — stop. Get help from your primary care physician or join a smoking cessation class to kick this addiction. Limit your alcohol consumption. You may have allowed yourself to indulge during the holidays, but alcohol is a contributing factor to heart disease, cancer, and a host of other illnesses. Get more sleep. Sleep is just as crucial to your health as diet and exercise. Make sure you try to get eight hours of sleep a night. Turn down the thermostat and close the curtains, it can help you get quality rest.

than 2300 mg of sodium a day. Cereals, breads, soups, and condiments contain a large amount of sodium. Adding up your daily intake will help you keep your heart healthy. You should throw out your salt shaker as the added sodium is not needed in most recipes. Avoid processed foods. Processed foods add sugar and sodium to your diet that you do not need. If you shop on the perimeter of a grocery store you are focusing on healthy whole foods. Avoid the interior aisles to steer clear of processed foods. Read nutrition labels. When you see items on a label and you can’t pronounce it, don’t eat it. You should not put something in your body that you cannot understand. Your primary care doctor or a dietitian can help you create a diet that is right for you and your health goals.

elcome, everyone, please come in. I see you remembered what I said about coming in the door from the parking lot located on the Court Street side. I know that is a little confusing with the sign above the entranceway door saying “Executive Plaza Building, 330 Pine Street.” Follow me as we are going to Room 103, the first room on the right. The regular Thursday session of the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting is about to start. You can hang up your coats here at the entranceway if you want, the room is generally warm enough so you shouldn’t need them. Okay, everyone in the room now? Good. As you can see, there is nice comfortable seating for about 50 people or so, and yes, there are times when every seat is taken, and there will even be those who have to stand on the sides and in the back. This might be because the commissioners are recognizing a county employee for an employment award or retirement and their colleagues are there to share in the moment, or it could be because a group of people are upset about something and just want to pack the house. The key thing to remember is that just like church, those who arrive first get the best seats…those in

the back of the room. Note the long front podium with the county seal in the middle, raised on a platform to make the five people sitting up there clearly visible. What’s that, you ask, why five settings for only three commissioners? Well, as you can see from the nameplates on the podium, the far left is for Mr. David Smith, the County Solicitor, who the commissioners will turn to when there is a legal question, and the far right is for Tonya Anderson the Administration Manager, who will be reading off the agenda items one by one during the meeting. Commissioner Jack McKernan is the chairman, so he will sit in the middle, Commissioner Tony Mussare sits to his right, and Commissioner Rick Mirabito will sit to his left. Now, you will notice at the back wall there is a long table here, and this is used on the

ing any decision the commissioners will make. This is known as the Sunshine Law, and it states that the public must be given an opportunity to comment on an issue before the commissioners would take a vote on that matter. This is why Commissioner McKernan will begin every meeting, right after the opening prayer and flag pledge, with a statement, “Are there any public comments on agenda items only?” You will see a small podium with a microphone in the middle of the room on the left, and this is where the people who wish to address the commissioners must come to speak. They are asked to give their name and address (to ensure they are county residents), and this and their comments will be included in the official minutes. I’m sorry, what was that you asked? Oh, you noticed on the agenda an item at the end labeled “Public Comment” and you want to know the difference, right? Well, the best way to describe it is that the first public comment can only be about what is on the agenda, whereas the comment time at the end is completely open. People step to the podium and complain (they never compliment) about something going on in the county and ask what is going to be done about it. This can get dicey, and if it does, more often than not it ends up in a lengthy debate. Oh, the commissioners are coming in now, so the meeting is about to start. Here we go. You never know what is going to happen here at the Lycoming County Commissioners Meetings, but it almost always is interesting!

Tuesday morning work session. Those five up front will sit back here, and the rows will be turned around to face them. Yes, I see all your hands up, you want to know why everything is backwards on Tuesdays, right? Well, the Tuesday meeting is more informal, there is much more question and answer feedback going on, and the commissioners like to be eyeball to eyeball during these discussions rather than sitting on Mount Olympus looking down like they do in their regular session meetings. Notice here on the table is a copy of today’s agenda. Yes, you all can have one, which is what they are there for. Looks long, doesn’t it? Ironically, there is no correlation between length of the agenda and the length of the meeting, because many of these items might be quite rudimentary and quickly reviewed, whereas one item on the agenda might result in an hour’s debate. How long are we going to be here, you ask? Well, that depends. I used to try to guess by looking at the agenda, but I stopped doing it because the staff began calling my predictions the “Stout Curse.” When I would review the agenda and comment, “looks like this will be a short meeting,” it almost guaranteed that it would turn out to be a marathon session. Meeting length often depends on how much the public gets involved. Yes, ma’am, you have a question? How does the public get involved, you ask? Well, by law, the public must be given the opportunity to make comments concern-

A

round 1980, I was walking down Main St. in Watsontown, my hometown, headed to the store with my mom. It was a summer day, as I still remember it like it was yesterday. The events of this day would be stamped in my 9-year-old mind like the serial numbers on an engine block. As we neared the borough building at 4th and Main, out of nowhere came a sound, unlike anything I had ever heard before. Loud and screaming with a deep rumble — if freedom had a sound, this was it for sure I thought. At the time I had no clue really what it was or who it was that roared past us, but I wanted it to be me in the worst way. Later, after asking some of my older friends in town, I found out what passed us on the street was Todd Williamson on his red 1979 Harley Davidson Sportster. At the time he went past us I can remember saying to my mom, “I’m gonna have one of those someday.” That was quickly followed by my

mother’s reply, “Your gram and I will both disown you if you ever get a motorcycle.” Flash forward to 1993. I had just come home from Basic Training at Ft. Jackson, and I asked my dad if he would go with me to pick up a motorcycle I wanted to buy. Years earlier I had asked him for a loan to buy a Harley Davidson and he refused (I am sure having everything to do with my mom, gram and of course my safety), but he agreed this time to ride along. After purchasing a black 1971 Harley Sportster, my first bike, we loaded it into my truck and brought it home, unloading it on a paved incline at the Watson Inn Parking lot. After unloading it my dad asked how I was getting it home, I explained I was going to ride it — I had never ridden a motorcycle in my life until that day. It was around 1995 that Todd Williamson and I began to plan a trip to Daytona Bike Week in 1996. Todd still had the red ‘79 Sportster, and it looked just as good as the day I remember seeing it over a decade earlier. We recruited two more of my

a morning ride into Daytona, Todd had an oil line rupture, and Dave went into town to get parts while we all reclined along the roadside, feet over the handlebars, soaking in the sun, waiting for Dave’s return. Sterling, Eleanor, and Todd are all gone now, but those memories, visits, and travels live on forever in my mind. I now proudly own Todd’s red 1979 Harley Davidson Sportster, the exact bike that fueled my passion for Harley Davidson back in 1980. Todd bought that bike brand new when he graduated in 1979 from Fisher’s HD in Northumberland. I became friends with Todd around 1991 and even though he was nine years older than I (nine years and three days exactly) we remained friends right up to his passing in July 2016. Months after his passing, I purchased it from his widow as a way to preserve his memory and lifelong love of that bike and the memories I had as a child — I can still see him and his mustache blowing in the wind, headed up Main St. I also look at it as a way to express that love to others, — by telling the story of our 40-year love for Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

friends, Tom and Dave and the four of us set out for Daytona in a 2wd GMC single cab pickup my dad owned with a borrowed six-foot cap on as eightfoot bed and a U-Haul trailer in tow. We all took turns driving the 1,200 miles, three of us in the cab and rotating one in the bed of the truck under the cap. Looking back on this I would never even consider doing this now, but back then, none of us even considered not doing it! Upon reaching the Sun and Fun of the Daytona area, we stayed with my “Aunt and Uncle” Eleanor and Sterling Kulp. Aunt Eleanor and Uncle “Unc” Sterling were not actually my Aunt and Uncle, but they always treated me like family, and I loved them dearly. On their yearly summertime visits to PA, they would always tell me to come visit them in FL. In 1996, I took them up on this offer. They had a detached garage in the rear of their Oak Hills, FL home that had a full bath as well as a table, chairs and plenty of floor space to set up air mattresses and a big yard for tents. We set up “camp” and enjoyed the early morning visits by “Unc” asking what we got into the night before in Daytona. One day on

any of us who live in Lycoming County and the surrounding counties are fortunate to have acquired multiple places to hunt, fish and spend quality time in the outdoors. Whether we pursue small game or big game and whether we prefer to fish for trout or bass, the majority of outdoorsmen who have resided in our area for many years have long since secured places to enjoy our sports. On occasion, however, commercial, residential or infrastructure development can cause us to lose our “happy hunting grounds” or our favorite fishing hole. It happens all too often as more and more residential developments target our rural hillsides and wooded areas. As farmland is being sold off to new landowners on whose land you previously had permission to hunt, trap or fish or a property owner passes away; our options are sometimes dwindling. Consider also, a person who is new to

the area and has not located a place to go. How then do we gain access to new locations? It is often said that “Timing is everything,” and with that in mind, the timing is right over the next few months to line up some new destinations throughout our multiplecounty forests and farms. We can all probably agree that one of the more disrespectful things we can do regarding a relationship with a landowner is to show up in our hunting outfit the opening day of a hunting season and ask permission to hunt on his land. It isn’t much better if you show up several days before the season. Our spring gobbler season begins in a few months, so now is the time to meet new landowners and seek permission to hunt. Better yet, knock on a few farmers’ doors this time of year and ask if you can help them out by reducing the number of coyotes that no doubt live on or travel through their land. Establishing a good relationship with a landowner during the predator hunting season is a great way to show them that you are a responsible hunter

PGC does get calls from time to time from individuals that complain of an overabundance of predators or too many black bears or an excessive amount of crows. Again, any of these situations might allow you to get an invitation to hunt a new property, and, if you conduct yourself respectfully and responsibly, you might have lucked into a new hunting destination. Who doesn’t like kids? If you are looking for a place to take a young hunter, or someone to mentor, make sure that you have them accompany you when you are meeting up with a landowner for the first time. It is much harder for a landowner to say no to a well-behaved youth who is accompanied by his parent or grandparent. It also teaches the young person the value of courtesy and being respectful to the landowner. Common sense and courtesy both go a long way to opening doors to new opportunities and this is even truer when seeking permission to trespass on someone else’s land. As responsible hunters and outdoorsmen, we each have an obligation to present ourselves in the best manner possible to landowners — in doing so; we create the best possibility of gaining access.

and just might lead to an invitation to return to pursue spring gobblers. Who doesn’t like a homemade apple pie? You may not think it would be appreciated, but I’ll bet that if you show up on a farmer’s porch with a freshly baked apple pie in return for his letting you hunt on his ground, you will probably cement a longterm relationship. Yes, a gesture like this is a bit out of the ordinary but will be remembered for a long time by a landowner friend. You may even secure sole hunting rights by offering such a genuine gift. And while most farmers are justifiably proud of what they do for a living, there is also nothing wrong with asking if there are some chores you can help with or if there are any tasks that he could use a hand completing. Common courtesy and a few nice gestures will go a long way in developing or maintaining a friendship and showing that you are a responsible outdoorsman. Still looking for a place to go? Check with the regional office of the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Ask the dispatcher or one of the WCOs if they know of any farmers or landowners who are troubled with coyotes or other predators. More often than not your winter catches will be more moderate, but there is a great satisfaction to catching trout under winter conditions. Because of the time of year, it’s also very likely you will have the stream to yourself — a great plus in and of itself. Also, this year has the added benefit of higher water levels due to the exceptional amount of rain; usually this time of year streams are low and clear, and trout are exceptionally spooky. While it may be more challenging, a winter stream trout fishing venture might be on my agenda; there is still even time to add a deer to that equation but I’m not counting on it.

greatest success has been with some kind of nymph pattern like a beadhead, gold-ribbed hares ear, beadhead pheasant tail or some other small pattern nymph. That’s not to say that a larger pattern like a wooly-bugger or a streamer wouldn’t produce; if the nymphs aren’t working the larger pattern may be the ticket. I have also had some success with an egg imitation in a pink or yellow color. I like working with the bead-head patterns because of the added flash. Trout do feed — even during the winter — months, and on occasion, some great catches can be had, but that’s most likely to take place during a warm period.

State’s quarterback Trace McSorley and Ohio State’s coach Urban Meyer had seen this January 1 day coming with the realization it could be the last day they spend doing something they truly love to do. While he no-doubt dislikes the reference, McSorley became the ultimate overachiever who lifted the spirits of the entire University and its’ fan base from the depths of the NCAA related sanctions to the heights of New Year’s Day bowl games and a Big Ten Conference championship. The 27-24 loss to Kentucky was not the way he envisioned going out, but no one could have questioned his desire or love of what he had achieved while wearing the Nittany Lion colors. His Citrus Bowl start marked his 100th game as a high-performing quarterback. He

was 55-5 as a starter at Briar Woods High School in northern Virginia, where he won three state titles. At PSU he finished up 31-9, tying Tony Sacca for the most starts in the school’s history. Along the way, McSorley owns Nittany Lion career records for completions, passing yards, passing touchdowns, total offense, rushing TDs by a quarterback, TDs responsible for, 300-yard passing games and 200-yard passing games. Perhaps coach James Franklin’s great accomplishment was to change McSorley from a Vanderbilt recruit to a collegiate career in State College. As for Meyer, love him or hate him, the man won football games. Coaching for 33 years, 17 years as a head coach where he posted a 187-32 record — his teams won

three national championships. While at both Florida and Ohio State questions arose about how he handled things and those problems and reported health issues led him to retire from coaching after what he described as ‘a bucket list’ win in the Rose Bowl. Some speculation exists as to whether Myer will ever coach again. Following the Rose Bowl victory, the 54-year-old Meyer told reporters, “I don’t believe that’s going to happen. I’m going to enjoy tonight. I don’t believe I’m going to coach again.” So at the dawning of 2019, if you are enjoying what you are doing savor every day of the experience. Most would like to see their passion conclude like McSorley and Meyer — not like the six NFL coaches on ‘Black Monday.’

one in the position of not knowing when it is that they will stop doing something they love to do. While attending a recent festive party centered on the NCAA’s semi-final football playoffs, a conversation ensued with a guest who the day prior had spent her last working day before retirement. She talked about the memories she had, the workplace friendships she had made, the retirement party and how she enjoyed her daily duties. She knew when her last day was and was looking forward to the next adventures in her life. That thought was on my mind as I ‘couchpotatoed’ my way through the New Year’s Day televised football games. Unlike the aforementioned NFL coaches, both Penn

THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs.

From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!

ing, and the tide was turning. James Franklin didn’t think twice and opted to kick the field goal. I was speechless, and so were the ABC commentators. Perhaps it was the right call but we obviously now know how it turned out. The kick was good, and Kentucky got two first downs and essentially ran out the clock. Our defense looked deflated after Coach’s decision. I was too. Trace McSorley should be considered as one the very best. He is the all-time Penn State leader in wins, completions, passing yards, throwing TDs, rushing yards by a QB and that is just a few. He was the total team player who led by example and had an amazing heart. Trace was the complete quarterback. A true winner and laid everything out on the field. He defied logic with his arms or legs time and time again. He was a joy to watch over the past few seasons. Penn State now has a huge void. It’s easy to sit back and question when it is all said and done. But McSorley deserved better. You are 14 yards shy of the end zone. Momentum is on your side. One of the greatest quarterbacks in the program’s history is rolling, and you decided to kick a field goal. Cheers.

Mr. Franklin and his boys trailed, and the outlook looked dim. They had absolutely no momentum. Quarterback Trace McSorley sustained a leg injury and was poked in the eye in the second quarter. Penn State officials said that the talented senior broke a bone in his foot and he wasn’t expected to return. Third-stringer Sean Clifford ran one ineffective offensive series. McSorely looked deflated but then somehow convinced James Franklin to get back into the game. He threw an interception and got completely decked on that play. Kentucky returned it all the way for a touchdown and the Blue & White Nation become awfully silent. I thought he was done — no way. But then Trace defied the odds. He limped around and found his swagger. Penn State’s mighty 20 point deficit gave way to a 27-21 score in minutes. Trace was on fire. Making throws and runs with that broken foot. Could Trace McSorely bring his Nittany Lions all the way back? Everything had shifted, and the Lions were deep in Kentucky territory. They were on the 14 and were faced with a fourth-and-7 with 4:00 left in the game. Penn State had three timeouts remain-

Leadership Continues to Keep Good Programs at the Top as Younger Competitors Learn the Right Lessons

L

eadership is one of the most important traits an aging athlete can take on throughout their career. “Aging,” in this case, being used to fit into the athletic endeavor, meaning that a senior in high school fits into this category since they have been a member of the team for four years or have grown with the program. In team sports, it’s easy to spot the leaders on the team. Often they are designated the captain or play one of the premier positions. In individual sports, the line between leader and participant can at times become blurred. At times an individual sport is exactly that — as the competitor doesn’t have time to help younger athletes along. That isn’t the case for Jersey Shore’s swimming program that features a host of seniors willing to help lead

the younger crop of competitors. “A lot of the younger swimmers aren’t as confident in themselves,” Jersey Shore swimmer Jordan O’Connor said. “They are a little scared to be with some of the ‘A’ swimmers or the better swimmers. You have to really encourage them so they know they can do it. They just have to prove themselves, so they know they can swim with us.” O’Connor’s leadership skills were on full display recently as the Bulldogs mixed events up in an effort to reverse an early season stumble that resulted in two consecutive losses. Relays were mixed up, swimmers were moved to unfamiliar events, and the results were exactly what the team needed. O’Connor is normally a backstroke swimmer but proved she can do any stroke in the pool as she topped the

field in the 100 fly. She was also thrown into the mix with relay teams she hadn’t swum with all season. “It’s really interesting,” O’Connor said. “You get to try something Brett new, and there’s not a Crossley lot of pressure on you to do well, because you’re just trying something out for the first time. You never know. You might like it and get put in something that you don’t get put into often.” O’Connor is a team leader who fully embraces her role on the team, but what about the younger members of the teams and how they deal with leadership? For Montoursville’s Jacob Fillinger that leadership was important as he joined the team late. “It was a lot to come out for the team,” Fillinger said. “There’s going to be a lot of seats to fill when the seniors leave. A lot of the seniors have been here since they were freshmen.”

Jersey Shore’s Jordan O’Connor competes in the 100 back during a dual meet against Danville. O’Connor has provided leadership for her team throughout the season. (Photo by Brett R. Crossley.)

Fillinger is in the middle of his second year with the team, and the leadership given to him by swimmers like Sam Jordan has been invaluable. “It’s good to look up to them because they know what they are doing,” Fillinger said. “There’s always room for improvement.” Whether it’s a team sport or individual, leadership will always be one of the keys to a successful program. Both Jersey Shore and Montoursville swimmers have benefited from good leaders both in and outside the pool.
