Checking Out, Checking Facts, And the Check’s Not in the Mail

T

here is so much to talk about in the world we live in today where do I start? I like beginning here at home and working my way out. Many of the issues we face here in the West Branch Valley are the same across our Great Nation. First stop, the local grocery store. I cannot believe what a simple trip to the grocer of your choice costs. I can’t imagine having a young family to feed and take care of in present-day America. The prices of Similac and diapers are off the chart compared to when my sons were little. Now a message directed to the uppity ups at Giant and Weis Markets. Are you absolutely serious? You expect people to pay these ridiculous prices for a cart full of everyday items, and then check them out, pay for them, and bag them? Yes, I know, everybody’s going to self-checkout, it’s the modern world. I agree self-checkout is convenient for a couple of items. But it is insulting to me to expect the customer to do your work because you believe you’ve found a better mousetrap. It is not; it simply eliminates people from the workforce and drives up your profit margin. I like the people that work at our local Giant and Weis Markets. I enjoy talking to them as I check out, or when I grab some lunch meat at the deli counter. My grievance is not with them, but with upper

management and ownership. But wait, there’s more. Not only do they expect you to ring up, bag, and pay for your own groceries, if you do not choose this option they expect you to wait an unreasonable amount of time in line due to staffing cuts. I will never do this. I try to go to the register where a person is working, even if I have one item. I understand what the end game is, profits over people. Self-checkout doesn’t need health insurance. Please don’t give me that BS “it’s the world we live in today, or there’s not enough help, or this is what the people want.” I have yet to talk to one person who wants to wait in line and/or check themselves out during their weekly grocery shopping. It amazes me they have people managing over self-checkout. Thank you for the help, but if you’re going to have someone on shift why not take care of your customers? I don’t want to be educated on how to work for a corporate grocery store! It was not a mistake that Wegmans was not mentioned in the above rant. I believe they not only have the best quality and largest selection of food items, but most importantly, Wegmans has figured out the best formula for the shopper. They are well staffed by folks that are neighbors, friends, maybe even family, and provide the best customer service!

Moving right along from checking out to checking the facts. There is a website, www.politifact.com, dedicated to fact-checking our fat cat Washington politicians. All politicians stretch the truth — maybe twist the truth, or even flat out lie. This is truly a non-partisan isJim sue. It is very difficult for Webb, Jr. the American people to know what the truth really is, and what is just flat-out make-believe. This is without even factoring in the fake news of the national media. We need a fact checking system to check the facts of those that are supposed to be providing us the facts. Journalistic integrity has been replaced with media bias by the liars club. Politifact.com ranks those who serve inside the Beltway in the six categories of honesty by true, mostly true, half true, mostly false, false and my favorite — pants on fire. Or pantsuit on fire in the case of Hillary Clinton. So, of course, the first name I pulled up was the honorable Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. According to PolitiFact Mrs. Pelosi tells the truth 14% of the time. Without running through all the categories, 66% of the time she tells half-truths or worse. Surprise, surprise. Next up was Senate Minority Leader Mr. Chuck Schumer, whose nickname should be “Up Chuck” because that’s about what I’m ready for every time I watch him. He tells the actual truth 11% of

the time. He’s telling half-truths or below 67% of the time. Birds of a feather... Now onto a quick check in on our federal workers who are being used as poker chips in a high stakes game of winner-take-all politics. It is ridiculous this can even happen in our country. Government shutdown, as far as I’m concerned, has been going on for years. The only difference is now we’re not paying the people who are actually working. We 100% need to secure not just the Mexican border, but all of our borders. The above-mentioned accusing the President of making up the problem is just mind-boggling. And then trying to sell this poppycock on TV. The fact that the liberal Democrats do not realize the dire straits our country is in regarding this issue tells you all you need to know. Their lying about the strategic significance of the US/Mexican border that separates good from evil is a threat to national security. Disgraceful. Back to President Trump. He needs to get this solved without penalizing those waiting on a check. He does not understand that many Americans live paycheck-to-paycheck and the problems this creates. Let alone for people that are on his own team - the federal government. There is support out there for President Trump from people I have talked to that are affected by this. However, that will waiver with each passing day. This needs solved, and it needs solved now. The idea of the check will be in the mail — but we just don’t know when — is unacceptable. God Bless America.

January is Stalking Awareness Month

Founder James Webb Sr. 1944-2012

ormally if I receive a press release or article that I feel warrants sharing in my space, I will re-write or change or add to it before I publish it. However, in this case I felt that not only did the information warrant my space, but there wasn’t much I could do to improve upon the content. So this week, I am giving up most of my space to share the YWCA’s information on ‘Stalking Awareness Month’. This is a subject I firmly believe does not get enough attention. It is often overlooked, and can quickly become a dangerous situation for those on the receiving end. Please stick through to the end though. I’ve got something else to share with you!

Stalking affects countless individuals across Lycoming County every single day. The YWCA Northcentral PA aims to help those who are experiencing stalking and provide information to the community about what someone should do if they are being stalked. Stalking is repeated and unwanted attention, harassment or contact directed at a specific person that would cause a person to feel fear. This can take the form of following someone, repeatedly visiting their home or place of employment, frequent phone calls, sending unwanted gifts or constantly texting, messaging or emailing them. Wise Options has educated, helpful staff members who work with victims to figure

Thank you again to the YWCA for always providing the resources, help and protection women may not be able to find elsewhere. On the sharing note… As a new year starts, we try to freshen things up in the pages of Webb Weekly. We’ve added a couple of new writers and Jimmy and I have been working on some new features. This week, page 14 has one of the new additions. We are going to be featuring pets from various shelters that are looking for their ‘Furever Homes’. So please check that out and maybe you can find your next furbaby! We also want to see your views from around the area. Have you taken a picture of an amazing sunset? A beautiful bald eagle? Or maybe just your favorite pet doing something hilarious or adorable? Please send it to me and it may be featured in an upcoming edition of the paper! Keep an eye out for ‘Focus on the Valley’ coming soon! You can submit your pics, along with your name, hometown and a brief description to webbnews@webbweekly.com.

out the best steps to ensure their safety. If you or someone you know is experiencing stalking, please call our Steph 24/7 crisis hotline at Nordstrom 1-800-326-8483. It is most common for someone to be stalked by somebody they know, said Chad Hahn, Wise Options legal advocate. It can be a friend, former romantic partner or a total stranger. “If you think somebody might be stalking you, trust your instincts,” he said. “If you think something is going on, it probably is.” Threats should always be taken seriously and never be brushed off as empty words especially when lives are at stake. Hahn encourages victims to seek out their options whether that is contacting Wise Options or law enforcement to create a safety plan. Collecting evidence and documenting when the victim is contacted by the stalker is essential in proving that their actions are persistent, he said. Create a log with the date, time and location of the incident that can be kept on hand. “Keep notes, gifts, photos of damaged property, texts and voicemail messages as additional proof,” Hahn said. Working with him or another Wise Options staff member, they help their clients create

a safety plan, which can involve pressing charges, getting a Protection from Abuse Order (PFA) or relocation. Wise Options focuses on helping all victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and other violent crimes in Lycoming County. The free services available are an emergency shelter, crisis hotline, legal advocacy, counseling and prevention education. t may be cold and wintry right now, but the warmth and satisfaction of doing for others through the concept of community service will be satisfied when various activities of that nature are performed and celebrated as part the of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dream Week, January 19 to 24. Beloved Community Council in partnership with STEP, Inc., AmeriCorps, Lycoming College and Penn College, welcomes the whole community to participate in the 11th annual MLK Dream Week events. This year the theme is “Awakening To Social Change – #Get Woke.” This Dr. King quote inspired the title: “One of the great liabilities of history is that all too many people fail to remain awake through great pe-

riods of social change. Every society has its protectors of status quo and its fraternities of the indifferent who are notorious for sleeping through revolutions. Today, our very survival depends on our ability to stay awake, to adjust to new ideas, to remain vigilant and face the challenge of change.” Dream Week begins on Saturday, January 19, at 10 a.m. with the annual Peace Walk. The location is First United Methodist Church, 604 Market St. and people can gather at the fountain by Bennett St. to walk an approximate onemile loop. Refreshments and social time will follow the walk inside the church. Beginning at 10:45 a.m. in the church sanctuary, there will be a musical celebration, “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” in honor of the Beloved Community member, the late Richard C. James. The program will include a short video

Thursday, January 24, 7 p.m., at Lycoming College Clarke Chapel, 700 College Place will present, “An Evening With Damon Young.” The guest speaker has been described, “With work that vacillates from anthropological satire and absurdist racial insights to razor-sharp cultural critique and unflinching indictments of privilege and bias, Damon Young engages audiences in thoughtful contemplation of modern society.” The community is invited to attend any or all of these activities in solidarity with the timeless principles of Martin Luther King Jr. and participate in creating the mutually beneficial social changes he envisioned in the beloved community. Dr. King’s words of wisdom inspire all of us to our highest potential as he said, “We have before us the glorious opportunity to inject a new dimension of love into the veins of our civilization.” All events are free and open to the public.

Gazette and Bulletin January 14, 1949 City-to-New York Air Service to Start Next Month

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he Civil Aeronautics Board yesterday cleared the way for Williamsport’s dream for direct air service to New York City to come true. City Solicitor Charles F. Bidelspacher revealed that he was notified service will begin next month. An All-American official said that four flights a day will be instituted from Pittsburgh to Williamsport, and New York in February. The airline has already purchased nine planes with a seating capacity of 24 passengers in anticipation of the service, he said. The C.A.B. action was suspension of All-American Airways airmail pick up operation next July 1, and approval of passenger-air mail-cargo service by the company. Mr. Bidelspacher said although exact details of the service have not been completed, it is expected that Williamsporters will be able to reach New York

by air in one hour and 15 minutes. The fare will probably be about $15 one way. The new service that is expected to begin by Capital Airlines March 15 to Philadelphia will give the Williamsport Airport the finest air service of any city of its size in the country, Mr. Bidelspacher said. By April 1 it is expected that 14 flights will leave this city each day. The route as approved, calls for stops west of Williamsport at Indiana, Dubois, State College, and Bellefonte. At present the fastest time to New York by public transportation is six hours and 15 minutes. The air stops beyond Williamsport will be at Avoca (Scranton-Wilkes-Barre), and at East Stroudsburg, according to the Associated Press. Discontinuing of the airmail service after 10 years will probably hurt some airmail service out of some area points such as Lock Haven and Jersey Shore, it was reported, but the new service here will partly compensate for the change.

NEVER FORGET Families of eligible U.S. military veterans can request funeral honors through their funeral director, who will contact the appropriate military service to arrange for the honors detail. Free of charge, the rendering of military funeral honors for an eligible veteran is mandated by law. An honor guard detail for the burial of an eligible veteran consists of not less than two members of the Armed Forces. Eligibility is available to military members on active duty or in the selected reserve, former military members who served on active duty and departed under honorable conditions, and former military members who completed at least one term of enlistment or period of initial obligated service in the reserves and departed under honorable conditions. boxes, etc. from one floor to the next is just the start; you also have to put things away as you travel around your home. So, take only what you have time to put away and you know where it goes. Of course, there are exceptions. I’m not entirely sure how my husband organizes his closet, but when I see his necktie on the banister to go upstairs, I still take it with me when I’m headed up and leave it by his closet to put away as he sees fit. Same for my handbags or the kids’ toys. We may not know where those things go, but having them closer to their final destination gets on the path of a tidier space. Keep cleaning realistic. Sure, I’d love to scrub out every cupboard, iron every button-down shirt, and Shop-Vac all the cobwebs in the basement, but there are only so many hours in the day. Making a list to prioritize chores will focus you and ensure what NEEDS to be cleaned gets cleaned. My running to-do list consists of three categories. First are the daily tasks of washing dishes and picking up toys. Second are the weekly items like laundry and vacuuming. Third are those bigger/seasonal projects, such as washing windows and reorganizing storage spaces. All three are on the white board in the kitchen as a daily and weekly checklist. For those once-a-year type of projects, we make a big deal of wiping them off once accomplished. Let me tell you, it feels so great to erase “rake leaves” once we are done for the season. While Prioritizing lists will help you focus

on keeping your home tidy, you also have to find balance and accept that nothing will ever be 100% clean. We live on a world made of dirt, after all, and trying to keep every surface spotless and ever tchotchke perfectly placed will just suck up your time and energy. Speaking of balance and energy, remember you are not the only person qualified to clean your house. Get the entire family involved with a nightly 15-minute clean up routine. Put a timer on, stick with your top priorities, and make it a teaching time for your kids to learn how to clean and keep a space tidy. This can be before bed, or right after dinner, whatever works best for your family. The key is to share the responsibility of having a clean home. For larger-scale clean up, like reorganizing and overall decluttering, you need to commit the time and energy to see things through. We’ve all had grand plans of getting our homes in order and then have things fizzle out halfway through when the amount of stuff becomes overwhelming. Don’t go it alone, find a method to guide you, whether it’s from a book like Marie Kondo’s or by Googling “6 Week Decluttering Challenge” and have a goal. For my home, I really want to get all of the toys corralled into one area, get rid of all the paperwork, and finally get family photos framed and hung on the walls. That last bit is key, because it’s my reward, a way to show off my hard work and reminds me that a tidy home is a happy home, and don’t we all want that?

Faith Conversations…

Conformity, Maturity and Freedom By Tim Hartzell

I

n Matthew 28:16-20, Jesus directs His church to make disciples. This passage is often referred to as The Great Commission. Most churches claim that making disciples — leading people to spiritual maturity — is a key element in their mission statement. But many leaders, including me, recognize that we are falling short. Instead of striving for maturity, we are often settling for conformity. Let’s talk about it. While conformity mimics maturity, the

two have very little in common. The major difference is this: those who conform are governed from the outside; those who mature are governed from the inside. The goal of spiritual maturity is freedom, and the only people who can be truly free are those who are governed from within. Freedom always requires self-governance, a truth that James Madison, the father of the Constitution, righty identified. We church leaders often settle for conformity because it is easier to achieve. Conformity requires a list of rules backed by penalties and rewards. First, teach

people the list. Second, use penalties and rewards to motivate them to conform to the list. Gaining conformity is as simple as that — and it creates believers who look mature. Sadly, conformity is not maturity or freedom — it is bondage. Listen, it is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. See Galatians 5:1. And friends, it’s not just leaders that prefer conformity. Many believers settle for conformity because following a list of rules seems easier than the hard work and sacrifice required to gain maturity. Paul addressed this problem when he referred to the believers in Corinth as mere infants

who needed milk because they weren’t ready for solid food. See I Corinthians 3. It is important to mention that there is a place for conformity in Christian discipleship. We must teach children and new believers to conform until they have gained enough maturity to be governed from within. But we cannot settle for conformity. We must pursue discipleship that leads to maturity. Here’s an illustration: Responsible parents recognize that their teenagers are quickly growing toward independence. At this point, conformity alone is not going to prepare them for the freedom and responsibilities of adult-

FREEDOM

hood. Gradually, teenagers are given the freedom to make difficult decisions and to experience painful consequences while still being guided and guarded by parents. It is messy, risky, and difficult work. Ask any parent of a 16-yearold and they’ll verify the challenge. But parents do it because preparing their children for freedom is the most basic responsibility they have. Here’s one of my favorite sayings, “It kills you to see the kids grow up, but it will kill you faster if they don’t.” In parenting, helping children mature into independence and freedom is vital. The same is true in the church. When we perpetually disciple people into conformity, we create a host of problems — for them, for ourselves, for the church, and for the mission of God. As leaders, we must make the transition from demanding conformity to training for maturity. It’s important that we get this right. Spiritual maturity requires transformation, and transformation requires that we yield completely to the grace God has made available through (1) the Word, (2) prayer, (3) the infilling presence of the Holy Spirit, (4) the accountability and fellowship of the Body of Christ, and (5) the purpose and fulfillment found in His mission. Jesus described yielding to these graces as denying ourselves, taking up our cross

daily, and following Him. See Luke 9:23. If you think that gaining spiritual maturity and freedom is easy, think again. According to Jesus, it will cost you everything. That’s why so many of us settle for conformity — we’re simply not willing to pay the price freedom requires. Paul describes yielding to grace as offering our bodies as living sacrifices. See Romans 12:1-2. In fact, Paul urges us to no longer conform, but instead, to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. True spiritual maturity is not acting different — it is being different. Once mature, you won’t need a list from someone else. You will be able to test and approve what God’s will — His good, pleasing and perfect will. Fellow believer, are you following a list of rules? Does Christianity seem like a burden as you live under legalism and judgement? Do you feel obligated to serve and give? Is it drudgery to you? Are you tired of acting out a form of Christianity that has no vitality or passion? If you answered yes, then you are likely living in conformity. Jesus has something better for you. Jesus came to give us life to the full. See John 10:10. It is a life of love, freedom, purpose and passion — and it is available to all who are willing to mature by doing the hard work of yielding fully to God’s transformational grace.

When Chris and Jack dropped me off later that evening, about 11 p.m., as I jumped out of the truck, Jack yelled, “I love you, Paul!” As those words echoed through the still night of my neighborhood, at first, I was shocked at the intimacy of such a statement from someone I did not really know that well, but I quickly yelled back, “I love you too, Jack!” And I realized, having been brought together through “the game,” I had come to love that man, Jack, and will greatly miss our basketball conversations. Amazing. One simple game, and so many great relationships for which I am humbly grateful!

Thumbs up Rick, well done! Jack Grimes was a devoted fan of the St. John Neumann Knights, who I was privileged to get to know much better when I was done with Coaching — as I became one of the SJNRA traveling fan club. Chris Ward, Jack and I would ride together (the 3 Musketeers) to almost all games. here have been too many tragic stories in the news lately about children getting hit by vehicles when getting on or off a school bus, including a deadly incident in Pennsylvania in which a 7-year-old boy was struck by a hit and run driver. The child was a second-grade student in the Tyrone Area School District. These crashes can be completely avoidable if motorists obey the Pennsylvania School Bus Stopping Law which requires motorists to stop at least 10 feet

Pennsylvania State Police. The shoulder is part of the “highway” and is maintained from berm to berm and includes the paved “roadway”. Unless the bus is on the other side of a divided highway, police will issue citations for motorist failing to stop for a school bus on the shoulder. Motorists should not proceed until the bus turns off the flashing red lights and after all children have reached safety. For more information about the school bus safety and to view an interactive infographic on when to stop for a school bus, visit www.penndot.gov/safety.

away from school buses that have their red lights flashing and stop arm extended. Motorists must stop when they are behind the bus, meeting the bus or approaching an intersection where a bus is stopped. Motorists following or traveling alongside a school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety. One of the most frequent questions asked regarding the Pennsylvania

School Bus Stopping Law is whether a motorist must stop on a multi-lane highway. The answer is yes, a motorist must stop unless they are in the opposing lane of a highway divided by a physical barrier. Physical barriers include grassy medians, traditional or cable guide rails or concrete median barriers. If there is no physical barrier between lanes, all lanes of traffic must stop if a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. When in doubt, stop. Vehicles also must stop even if the bus is off the roadway on the shoulder according to Lt. Eric McKean with the

to propose at a more relaxed time. • Enlist help from others. It can be a challenge to keep your excitement hidden while collecting information about a future spouse’s likes and dislikes. Ask friends and close family members to be your accomplices so that information can be gathered without generating suspicion. This can be especially helpful when finding the perfect ring. • Keep it simple. The more complex a proposal, the more opportunities for things to go wrong. Simplicity, even if it means keeping the proposal to yourself until the question has been popped, can make for an extra special moment. Marriage proposals happen every day. With humor, confidence and a heart full of love, popping the question can be a success.

It may be romantic to step back in time and followed the traditions of yesteryear. Show respect to future in-laws by speaking to them about intentions to propose and ask for their blessings. Get down on bended knee when asking for a sweetheart’s hand. Such gestures add up to meaningful expressions of love. • Consider timing. A person may be so excited to propose that he or she fails to consider how the other person in the relationship is feeling. Wedding Dress Fitting Guide

B

ecause fashion preferences were once ornate and dependent on precise fits, ready-to-wear clothing really did not become widely available until the early 20th century. Such attire is now available in just about any retail store. Because ready-to-wear clothing is so readily available, the average person may be unfamiliar with custommade or tailored items. In fact, a couples’ wedding may be the only

instance in their lives when they require the services of a seamstress or tailor. Fittings are a part of wedding planning, and here’s how brides-tobe can navigate the process of finding and being fitted for a dress. • Try on sample gowns. The first step is to make your rounds to various gown shops and try on the samples they have available. Most sample sizes will not be the size you wear every day, so expect them to

be ill-fitting. Do not be discouraged. Once a gown is chosen, the dress shop will take your measurements and order the gown according to the manufacturer’s sizing guide. Again, this can be shocking, since the size will likely be larger than what you wear in street clothes. Some shops will also order a little larger to allow for adequate tailoring. • Schedule the first fitting. The first fitting should be anywhere from eight to 12 weeks before the wedding date, according to experts at WeddingWire, an online wedding

the bride. • Check the details. The second fitting is designed to check that all issues from the first fitting have been addressed, the gown is comfortable and you can move freely. At the last fitting, ask the maid of honor to come along so that she understands how to bustle or help you handle complicated straps or closures. Open communication with a seamstress and bridal shop can ensure brides-to-be get a dress that fits like a glove.

wedding is a tough time to experience a bad hair day. Clothing styles, time of day and weather all can dictate a wedding hairstyle, but ultimately one of the most important factors in a wedding hairstyle is finding a stylist who understands you and can exercise your vision. A patient, understanding stylist who is open to viewing different photographs and drawing inspiration from various places, as well as running through a few trial styles, can help brides (and grooms) look their best. In fact, trials

are a must to ensure that a chosen style will work with your hair texture. If you plan to get your hair colored, professionals recommend doing so about three weeks in advance of the big day so it looks natural and any potential snafus can be remedied beforehand. Your stylist may suggest a light trim prior to the wedding so that the ends are fresh and healthy. And since you’re putting your faith in a qualified stylist, trust their expertise and vision. Keep an open mind to their suggestions. You may fall in love with one of the options you hadn’t considered.

rief breaks during the work day can dramatically improve one’s ability to focus on a task. A 2011 study published in the journal Cognition found that brief mental breaks can improve focus on a prolonged task. The study’s authors tested participants’ ability to focus on a repetitive computerized task for 50 minutes under various conditions. The control group performed the task without breaks or diversions. The switch group and non-switch group memorized four digits before performing the task and were directed to respond if they saw one of the digits on the screen while performing the task. The switch group was the only group to be presented with the digits twice during the experiment, and both groups were tested on

their memory of the digits at the end of the task. Most participants’ performance declined considerably over the course of the 50-minute task. However, the performance of those in the switch group did not decline at all, as the two brief breaks to respond to the digits allowed them to maintain their focus throughout the experiment. The researchers behind the study concluded that the switch group’s performance was steady because the brain is built to detect and respond to change, and its performance will actually suffer if it must maintain prolonged attention on a single task without taking a break. Professionals with a lot on their plates may see their performance improve by taking frequent mental breaks throughout the workday.

t is that time of year to make our traditional New Year’s Resolutions — you know -that list of things we know we should follow, but rarely seem to accomplish! So really, the first step is to promise ourselves that this year we will make that list and be much more conscientious about following it. As sportsmen, we have some special considerations that we should consider as we plan out our year’s list. Here are a few suggestions you might want to add to your list: Get in Shape by Doing More Scouting: Everyone always seems to place weight loss or getting in shape at the top of their lists. Actually doing it, however, seems to be the most difficult to accomplish — after all, exercise can get so routine and boring! As hunters and outdoor folks, we are always seeking to better our odds against clever whitetails and wary gobblers. When winter snow cover blankets our landscape, we have the opportunity to hike our favorite trails and logging roads and learn more about the travel patterns and habits of the game we pursue. Soon, the bucks will be dropping their antlers and we can add shed antler hunting to our wintertime and springtime activities. Placing out and monitoring trail cameras now will help identify just what game made it through the hunting seasons and allow us to set a plan for the fall hunting season. One of the most important exercises we can

to go further and less strenuously as we hunt. All of the above activities will allow you to hike your favorite locations as you scout out the areas, look for shed antlers or maintain your string of trail cameras. Become Active in a Conservation Organization: Over the years, each and every one of us has benefited from the tireless efforts of other sportsmen and women through the time they spend volunteering with one conservation group or another. Everyone, whether they are sportsmen or not, can enjoy bird watching, wildlife observation and photography, hunting, fishing and the wonders of nature because others have spent their time and energy to help ensure that these wonders will be here for all to enjoy for decades to come. Isn’t it time you too get involved? There are plenty of clubs and organizations to get involved with. Along the way, you will make new friends who share your interests and goals, learn more about the outdoors and enjoy a well-deserved feeling of accomplishment by volunteering and doing things that benefit all wildlife. While many of these groups became organized with the thought of helping a specific species of wildlife, they have all expanded their mission statements to include other species, and goals such as habitat improvement, hunter education and recruitment, firearm safety and public education and relationship. Great examples of organizations that are active in our area are the National Rifle Association (NRA), National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF), Quality

becoming a mentor is one very effective and enjoyable way to do just that. Share the Harvest: Ever consider hosting a “Game Dinner”? No, it doesn’t have to be a large group, merely one or two couples who have never really tried properly prepared wild game. Over the years, I have heard all of the objections to game meats. Most of those objections can easily be overcome through proper field care and preparation in the kitchen for presentation at the table. Many times, when the food is prepared and presented properly, folks who previously did not enjoy wild game dishes are pleasantly surprised. We, as sportsmen, have an obligation to share our passions any way possible, and this is just one more way we can recruit the support of a person who might otherwise not appreciate what hunting is all about.

Jigs too have become much more sophisticated in recent years with all kinds of specialized head designs and shapes, but I still prefer to make most of my own jigs. I do buy some specialty jig heads on occasion, but I find the simple round head jig will suffice in most cases. There are a variety of molds available for making an assortment of jig heads. learly disdaining Horace Greeley’s 1865 advice of, “Go west young man,” Clemson University’s football team’s first appearance in a football game played in California in more than four decades proved to be a rousing success as the Tigers dismantled Alabama 44-16 in winning the NCAA National Championship last week. Much has been written and spoken about the Tigers dominance that handed Nick Saban his worst loss since becoming the Crimson Tide’s coach in 2007. While the final score wasn’t indicative, this fourth matchup in as many years in the college

football final four saw the nation’s two best teams come into the game with perfect 14-0 records. What was a bit atypical was the availability of tickets for college football’s showcase game. This year’s game was played in Levi Stadium, home of the San Francisco 49ers in Santa Clara, California. As beautiful as the 68,500-seat venue is, its location — coupled with the fact that two teams from across the country were playing in the game — found ticket prices at an all-time ‘low.’ On the day of the game, the average ticket price on StubHub was $448, making it the least-expensive college football champion-

ship game since the fourteam playoff debuted in 2014. The cheapest ticket on the site sold for $40. The prior low was when Alabama and Clemson met three years ago in Glendale, Arizona, where the average StubHub ticket sold for $593. In any sports championScott ship playoff, no one can Lowery predict years in advance what teams could be participating. Most likely the decision to host the championship game away from the college football-heavy south was about expanding the footprint of the sport. But in

this case, Santa Clara is not a college town, and its location limited the ability of Clemson and Alabama fans to take time off from work and pay the $1,500 nonstop air far from Atlanta to the west coast. This game is a marquee game, and since its inception, it has been teams from the South or Midwest (the University of Washington an exception) that have made it to the dance. In the past two decades, Southern California is the only school to have been crowned National Champions, and that was via an Associated Press poll, long before the current playoff format was established. The decision makers at the NCAA have plenty of folks to appease, especially those that control the myriad of college bowl

Stadium – 101,561 3. Ohio State University Ohio Stadium – 101,947 2. Penn State University’s Beaver Stadium – 105,485 1. University of Michigan’s ‘The Big House’ – 110,736 Not one of these edifices is located anywhere near the west coast! But even these impressive attendance numbers come with some ‘regrets.’ Alabama’s least attended home game was the opener against Arkansas State (100,495). A few weeks later Saban commented on the student section’s lack of enthusiasm after a win over Louisiana-Lafayette. “I can honestly say I was a little disappointed there weren’t more students at the game. Me personally, I think it ought to be first-come-first-served. If they don’t want to come to the game, they don’t have to come. But I’m sure there are enough people around here that would like to go to the games, and we’d like for them too —because they support the players.” James Franklin this season asked his fans for the ‘most challenging environment in college football.” A record Beaver Stadium crowd of 110,889 showed up to see the Nittany Lions 1 point loss to Ohio State. But the fans did come out; three times topping the 106,000 mark at home games. For the record, the 2020 college football championship game will be played at the Superdome in New Orleans, which should make things a lot easier for fans to attend — that is unless west coast teams should somehow be involved!

games that take place each season. But one could reason that it may be prudent for the NCAA to evaluate the potential of expanding its footprint versus serving your existing market. A stadium on the west coast seating 68,500 is a lot of folks, but it pales in comparison to existing venues more conveniently located to the hotbed of the college game. Why not establish a rotating schedule between the likes of Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium (71,000); Indianapolis’s Lucas Oil Stadium (67,000); the New Orleans Superdome (76,468) and Dallas’s AT&T Stadium (76,468)? All are indoor stadiums with great experience at hosting big-time events. College football is not professional by name only. In fact, the top ten stadiums in the college game all exceed the seating capacity of any of the stadiums named above. While it would not be prudent to have the college championship game potentially giving any one team a home-field advantage, listed below are the ‘big time’ stadiums operating on college campuses 2018 average attendance figures. 10. University of Nebraska’s Memorial Stadium – 89,034 9. University of Georgia’s Sanford Stadium – 92,746 8. University of Tennessee’s Neyland Stadium – 93,022 7. University of Texas’s Darrell K. Royal Memorial Stadium – 97,712 6. Texas A&M’s Kyle Field – 99,844 5. LSU’s Tiger Stadium – 100,819 4. University of Alabama’s Bryant-Denny

nice, but then it can get out of hand. Less technology and Fortnite. We need more woods. When we are outside on a hike — Jensen shines. The same goes if he is fishing with me from a canoe. I am hoping to get him outdoors for some balance and perspective quite soon. We are blessed with several local spots just minutes away. He prefers Jacoby Falls or Ryder Park. We have been all over North Central PA, and we are planning a trip out west this summer. I am doing my best to restrict his hours online. I am sure that I will keep you posted on how this goes. Cheers.

THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs.

From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!
