ne thing you can count on with the Super Bowl is that there will be a winner decided. In the event of a tie after four quarters, they will go to the NFL’s overtime format to declare a winner, and simply play until the game is decided. I think this system should be adopted by the legislative and executive branches of the federal government. There should be a score kept, a time limit, and a clear-cut winner that all of America can view. One thing is obvious in watching what’s going on in Washington; our government has become way too powerful! Something needs to change, so they go back to work for the American people instead of just eating at the trough of the American taxpayer while accomplishing nothing. Americans love watching sports — especially football. So when an issue can’t be decided by compromise in a reasonable amount of time — let’s just simply suit up the Republicans and the Democrats and let them have at it on the gridiron. Just imagine watching President Trump come off the edge on a blitz and knocking House Speaker Nancy Pelosi into the next week. The same opportunity would exist for all the Trump haters. Think of the damage a triple team of Senators Chuck Schumer, Dianne Feinstein, and Representative Maxine Waters could do to President Trump if given the opportunity. There would be flags all over the field for unnecessary roughness and, of course, piling on. The first thing that would need to be decided is who the head coaches will be for each team.

I think it has to be a past president. For the Democrats I think you have to go with former President Bill Clinton — a big Arkansas Razorback and Dallas Cowboy football fan. Although you know Barack Obama would also want the job. Of course, both would be challenged by Hillary Clinton claiming she should get the job because she was actually calling the shots during her husband’s two terms in office. On the Republican side, the choice would be clear if only the ‘Gipper,’ President Ronald Reagan hadn’t left us for the Great Gridiron in the sky. So that leaves us with former President George W. Bush. The only problem there is former VP Dick Cheney is going to claim he ran the White House for eight years during the younger Bush’s administration. Our game will be in gridlock before it’s even on the gridiron because neither team will be able to select a head coach. Moving on to the most important position on the field, the quarterback. I think Vice President Mike Pence can do a great job. He’s smart, athletic and he has proven his toughness by being able to take the pounding by the media brought on by their hatred of President Trump. As far as the quarterback for the Democrats there will be three players sharing time. Senator Minority Leader “Upchuck” Schumer will get the start. Presidential loser Hillary Clinton will also take a lot of snaps. Although one of the qualifications to play in the game is to be an active member of Congress, a deal was struck between Hillary and Head Coach

Court Justices. There is worry over 85-yearold Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s ability to actually ref the game. Speaker Pelosi responded by stating “She will be just as effective officiating as she is in the Supreme Court, besides there’s no way we’re going to allow President Trump to appoint another Supreme Court Justice, I mean referee.” Senator Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut will not be on the Democrats roster, however, he has already gone on record stating he played and fought hard during the game. Republican Senator Rand Paul’s cries for the game to be two-hand touch instead of tackle have been ignored. There is still question over Paul’s understanding of which team he will be playing on. There is no truth to the rumor that the Far Left Liberal Democrats will not participate in the game if the score is kept and everyone is not awarded a participation trophy after the game. Former VP Joe Biden will serve as a bipartisan waterboy. Members from both teams have expressed concerns over being inebriated by half time. Non-bias members of the media Sean Hannity and Don Lemon will operate the scoreboard, replacing election officials from Broward County, Florida who were deemed both too slow and bias for the job. Well, folks, it should be a good old-fashioned hard-hitting, rivalry game between two teams that really don’t like each other. The good news for the American people, especially those federal workers waiting on a paycheck, something will be decided. Just thought with everything going on in our Country a good laugh was in order. God Bless America.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi will be the third to play quarterback. Although she’s not the most talented, fellow party members believe she would Jim cheat, lie and steal to win. Webb, Jr. Not to mention just the sound of her voice calling the snap count will cause they Republican Defenders to become annoyed and lose concentration. Former President Barack Obama negotiated to be both offensive and defensive coordinator, in exchange for withdrawing his name for head coach. There were also many concerns over Head Coach Clinton being distracted by the Republican cheerleaders. This after a report leaked out from Senator Dianne Feinstein’s office that a woman who wanted to remain anonymous informed her Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh was recruiting anybody who looked like Monica Lewinsky to cheer during the game. Other game notes — President Trump will play every position on the field. When asked about it he said, “It’s because I can, and want to make America great again with a win.” Rookie Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan has been suspended for the game over concerns of her targeting President Trump. Officials feel she may lead with her helmet after making the statement, “Impale the m***** f*****.” or maybe it was impeach. Officials for the game will be the Supreme

Let’s Make Slime

S

o y’all know I love to share a good recipe with you. So this week I’m bringing you something special. While you can’t eat it, it certainly has all the ingredients for a fun time! I recently had the opportunity to make slime. It’s super simple, and isn’t particularly messy, and with winter weather officially in full effect, I thought I’d share the how-tos with you for an easy, fun, winter project. It’s not an expensive undertaking and like I said, it wasn’t really messy, so there is no major cleanup. We did the most basic of slime, but I’m going to give you a couple of variations to add some extra fun. But all the ‘recipes’ start the same. Basic Slime: Ingredients: • (1) 5oz. bottle of Elmer’s Glue – you pick the variety — colors, glow in the dark, glitter… • 1/2 Tbs. of baking soda. • 1 Tbs. (give or take) of contact lens solution. That’s it. If you want, you can also use basic white Elmer’s Glue and use any food coloring you prefer.

Winter often means being trapped inside with restless kiddos. This is an easy, and again, inexpensive project to kill some time this winter. After the kids are done playing with the slime, you can drop it in a ziplock to use again later. I’m not totally sure how long it will keep, but I would think it will be OK for a couple of days.

Fluffy Slime: All of the ingredients are the same for fluffy slime as the basic except you are going to add shaving cream to the mix until you get the right consistency. It’s important to note, you can’t use shaving gel, or anything that turns to shaving cream after you rub it in or anything. You need to use good old-fashioned shaving

Floam: Y’all remember Floam right? I always wanted Floam when I was a kid. It always looked like so much fun! But back then it involved a credit card and calling a random 800 number to order, so it wasn’t in the cards for me. However, in looking up the slime recipe, I found you can make Floam at home pretty simply and inexpensively. You are going to start by taking several Styrofoam cups and breaking them up and putting them in a blender. Add a little water to make grinding them up easier. Once they are ground down, drain the excess water and add the Styrofoam bits and knead them into the fluffy slime recipe. See? Super simple. If you want to get fancy, you can add glitter into the mix and make sparkly Floam, or slime. Just remember, glitter is forever. So once you mess with it, you’ll be finding it forever.

Directions: Pour out the entire contents of glue into a bowl. Add baking soda and mix thoroughly. Add contact lens Steph Nordstrom solution. Mix until mixture gets harder to mix and slime begins to form. Take slime out, and begin to knead with both hands. If it’s too sticky, add 1/4 Tbs. of contact lens solution and knead. Keep adding contact lens solution until you reach desired consistency. Not gonna lie, after the initial tablespoon, I just eyeballed (no pun intended) the saline solution until we got it right.

Jedi: A Furry Friend For Children In Court By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I

magine being a child and having to appear in a court proceeding, whether it is for a custody matter, a protective matter, or even a criminal matter. It can be a daunting and scary thing for many of these children, but there is a furry friend who provides a friendly and reassuring presence. That furry friend is “Jedi,” a two-year-old Labrador golden cross dog. Jedi was acquired from Canine Companions for Independence. Canine Companions breeds, raises and trains service dogs, skilled companions, PTSD service dogs, hearing dogs, and facility dogs. Canine Companions gives these dogs at no cost to

the recipient/facilitator. “We applied for a facility dog in June 2016; I had a telephone interview in August 2016; I had a personal interview in Long Island in December 2016; and I was selected for team training in February 2018,” Jeri Rook, executive secretary to Lycoming County Judge Joy Reynolds McCoy and Jedi’s handler, told “Webb Weekly”. “I spent two weeks in Long Island in team training and graduated on February 16, 2018, with Jedi. We began working in Lycoming County on February 20, 2018.” Rook said Judge McCoy wanted to bring a dog into the Courts to reduce stress and anxiety for children that are involved directly and indirectly in the Court system.

She said the goals for why Jedi was acquired being met absolutely. Jedi has been working with children in the Dependency system (foster care), in the delinquency system (juvenile delinquency), in custody matters, and has worked with victims of criminal matters on two occasions at the request of Children and Youth. “Children are immediately calmed when Jedi walks into the room. He gives the children something to take their thoughts away from the real reason they are there,” Rook said. “He reduces their stress and anxiety. Sometimes he plays with them making being at the Courthouse a little more fun, and sometimes he just lays with them and lets them pet him. Children who have to come into Court on a regular basis now look forward to coming to see Jedi. Facility dogs mitigate the stress and anxiety of children and victims when they are involved in the Court system. Jedi’s impact on the children, staff, and visitors is calming and fun. “Everybody loves Jedi!!” According to Rook, the courthouse and courtroom staff love Jedi. He has become a distraction from the stresses and trauma we see on a daily basis. She was asked how were the funds raised to get Jedi and what was involved in Jedi’s maintenance? “As Jedi was given to us at no cost, we had minimal start-up costs. We had a budget set, and Judge McCoy had formed a committee to put together a program which included fundraising,” Rook stated. “Fortunately for us, Lycoming County Children and Youth Ser-

was chosen by Judge McCoy for my love of dogs. What I didn’t know at the time, is how much I would love being Jedi’s handler and interacting with the children and the public, in general. It is amazing to watch the effect he has on people, especially the children, and how he helps them cope. I enjoy seeing how he is loved and embraced by all: employees, visitors, children and crime victims. He has a gentleness about him that draws him to the most stressed. Walking through a crowded hallway when many proceedings are happening (for instance on PFA days when there are generally several hearings scheduled at one time or arraignments), and everyone looks stressed about being there, it’s amazing to see the transformation when Jedi walks through the hall. Everyone starts to smile and talk to him, some want to pet him, and we end up talking about Jedi, and they forget, even if just for a moment, why they are here. The same with the children. When Jedi enters the playroom and the children turn around and see him, they get huge smiles on their faces, and they are almost transformed before my eyes. One of the victims Jedi sat with during testimony said “is he for me?” and I think he had a small part in her being able to testify, where she was reluctant to do so before Jedi entered the picture. He is a calming presence for everyone. So, what does it mean to me to be Jedi’s handler? I am honored and am extremely lucky to have been chosen.”

areers in the United States Navy will begin soon for three former Williamsporters, all of whom are presently Midshipmen at the U.S. Naval Academy. They are Harold E. Spooner, son of Mr. and Mrs. G. Nathan Spooner, of 1314 Park Avenue, John F. Morgan, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rupert Morgan, of 1109 Packer Street and James H. Stewart, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Stewart of 1441 Faxon Parkway. On Friday, the three men took part in something they will remember for a long time. They marched in the inaugural parade of President John F. Kennedy at Washington. The young men joined thousands of midshipmen, West Point cadets (five from here), other military school and regular service personnel, who paraded in the jampacked capital. Midshipmen Spooner is probably the best known of the three because of his performance as starting quarterback on the Middies football team. It was his athletic and scholastic ability, which attracted the attention of Navy scouts

and led Spooner to Annapolis. The 21-year old Spooner, a first classman and platoon commander at Annapolis, will be graduating on June 7. Three days later he will return to Williamsport to wed Miss Ellen Grove of this city. Getting similar experience is Jim Stewart, 20, a third classman at the Naval Academy. Jim, a 1958 graduate of Williamsport High School, entered Annapolis in July 1959. Like Spooner, he is a member of the Naval Academy’s varsity football team. He saw limited action last season as a third starting halfback but stands a good chance of moving up to a starting role this year. Third Classman Stewart will join other classmates this summer in flight training at the Pensacola Naval Air Station. The other local Midshipman, John Morgan also aims to make the Navy a career. That dream came true for the future officer while attending Penn State University. He was a member of the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps when he was appointed to Annapolis in July 1959. Midshipman Morgan, 20, a 1958 Williamsport High School graduate, completed one year of electrical engineering studies at Penn State before switching to Annapolis.

crowd had been listening to speeches for hours under a hot August sun. Yet, despite their fatigue and the late hour, the crowd was being visibly moved, and as King’s speech was wrapping up, it was obvious they wanted to hear more. King writes in his autobiography that he “felt” something, and Mahalia Jackson, the singer who had been sitting behind him and had accompanied him on many of his rallies, piped up behind him, like in church, and said, “Tell ‘em about the dream, Martin.” It was just the push he needed. And just like that, Martin Luther King Jr. went off script. He began reciting a stump speech that he had used a number of times before, but now, in the context of everything he had said before; it had a ring that has never stopped ringing. Quoting the Bible, classic American songs, as well as old Negro spirituals, and repeating, again and again, the concept of a dream that would be fulfilled in the full meaning of freedom and equality, King spoke a truth that resonates as loudly today as it did when he spoke it. It is great that Martin Luther King Jr. has a day set aside to his remembrance, but if that is all it is, it is a terrible waste. Rather than remembrance, he deserves reflection — as his life, example, and powerful words provide valuable lessons of life for us personally and as a nation as a whole.

s a student of leadership for the past three decades, I have searched high and low for good examples. Because much of my work was international, and much of the world believes that all Americans know about is America, I wanted to find leadership examples from as many different nationalities as possible. Yet, there was one American that I found resonated with people from six continents — Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His life story is well known, which does not need to be repeated here. What I appreciate is that as much as any leader who ever lived, Martin Luther King Jr. walked the talk. Two of his greatest literary works were in the midst of that challenging walk. The first was “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” which was an open letter he wrote on April 16, 1963. He was arrested because of coordinated marches and sit-ins against racism and racial segregation in Birmingham, Alabama. King’s action of protest was challenged by eight white Alabama clergymen in a newspaper editorial named, “A Call for Unity.” King’s supporters had to

smuggle out his response, “Letter from a Birmingham Jail,” on the margins of the paper from the editorial and loose scraps of paper. It was a masterpiece, and no summary does it justice, but here is a modest attempt. King defended his nonviolent resistance to racism as a proper moral response to breaking unjust laws. Responding to the charge that he was not from Birmingham, and thus, these issues were not his problem, he eloquently responded the often quoted, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Written in a filthy jail cell was a message of wisdom for the ages that has inspired millions around the world. Four months later, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered another message even more well known, his “I Have a Dream” speech. It was delivered on August 28, 1963, at the end of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom. Arguably one of the greatest speeches in American history, it is ironic that the part that is most quoted was not part of the original speech! Several competing civil rights groups had emerged in the 1950s, and though Martin Luther King Jr. was the biggest

name in the group, there were others who also wanted their moment in the sun, so to speak, at this great national gathering. King was relegated to the very end of the line of speakers, and asked to provide some ten minutes or so of “closing remarks.” The speech that King crafted showed true touches of genius. First, the setting — he knew he would be standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial, which has the Gettysburg Address engraved on his statue, so King’s first line of his speech makes reference to him. “Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadow we stand today signed the Emancipation Proclamation.” In an incredibly subtle way, King was referring to the Gettysburg Address, “Four score and seven years ago…” which dates back to 1776. So in one sentence, King was able to link the Declaration of Independence, which asserted, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal” to Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation, and to his address before that crowd in Washington, D.C. in August of 1963. From there, Martin Luther King Jr. gave as close to a perfect speech as could be given, from a background of the past to a description of the present, and then a hope for the future. When he delivered it, it was late afternoon, and the

gainst all logic and understanding, I tolerated the most hideous-looking carpet known to man for what seemed like an eternity. It stretched an expanse measuring more than 600 square feet from living room to dining room — a wall-to-wall Melinda nightmare that everyone knew Wentzel was pink. Not salmon. ers’ kids and pets) had stained said carpet and that it would never again return to its pristine state. Who am I kidding? Even its pristine state looked positively awful. Need I remind you it was pink? At any rate, for 21 years my husband wouldn’t budge on the issue. In his mind, it was impossible for a house to have too much carpeting — even terrible carpeting. He was even known to have loved the carpet that used to exist in our kitchen and master bathroom. Yes, KITCHEN and MASTER BATHROOM. I wish I were kidding. Not surprisingly, with regard to accidents, it brought new meaning to the word repulsive. Need I even mention the stench that lingered, even after dousing it with an arsenal of cleaning solutions? “For the love of God,” I thought, “who puts carpeting in a kitchen or a bathroom?! It’s wrong on so many levels I can’t even begin to understand what went into such flawed design decisions.” Thankfully, I only had to endure that tragic reality for about 16 years, having replaced it with some beautiful pseudo-tile flooring. It’s a joy to walk on with bare feet, and as an added bonus, I no longer freak out when I spill orange juice or drop an egg at my feet. OK, maybe I freak out a little, but it’s a far cry from what used to happen. As for our new living room/dining room reality, it is defined by warmth and wonderfulness in the form of seven-inch, oaklike planks that resist both stains and water. And to say that the dark walnut color is gorgeous is an understatement. It perfectly

ties our kitchen cabinetry and stone island together with the Brookline Beige paint in our living/dining rooms, and I’ve watched enough HGTV to say that it adds to the overall flow of the household. Yes, I used the word “flow” when I attempted to persuade my husband that we needed hardwood flooring because I’m fancy like that. Needless to say, I eventually succeeded in convincing him to ditch the aforementioned carpeting (at least on the first floor), but I’m sure it pains him greatly to admit that he actually likes the new hardwood floors. Of course, he refuses to use the word “flow,” but that’s OK. “So what do you think about the new flooring?” I asked after the job was complete. “It’s not so bad, and I like how the color ties into the wood furniture. Even the area rugs are nice,” he conceded one day not so long ago. I knew he’d see it my way. He just needed a chance to appreciate my vision. All right, it’s possible I had no vision. Perhaps I just loathed that carpet with every ounce of my being and sought to replace it with just about anything that was remotely viable. Even cobblestone had potential in my mind. At least it wouldn’t have been pink. Planet Mom: It’s where I live, enjoying my new hardwood flooring thanks to Ed Gair, the master craftsman who tolerated my neurotic little dog as well as an embarrassment of clutter. 13th Hot Stove League Banquet Was Field of Dreams For Area Baseball Fans By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I

t wasn’t heaven, and it wasn’t Iowa, it was just the Genetti Hotel, but it seemed like baseball heaven for area baseball fans when Williamsport Crosscutters’ 13th Annual Hot Stove League Banquet was held recently. On a cold, winter night there were visions of action on warm, summer baseball diamonds as an outstanding array of baseball speakers appeared at the occasion, including, former Phillie, Giant and Cub All-Star outfield standout, Gary “Sarge” Matthews, ESPN baseball commentator and columnist, Tim Kurkjian, and actor, Dwier Brown, who portrayed Kevin Costner’s father, “John Kinsella,” in the magical and moving 1988 baseball film, “Field of Dreams.” I had a chance to talk to “Sarge” Matthews before the banquet, and I asked him what it was like to be a rookie on a team that had two future Hall-of-Famers, Willie Mays and Willie McCovey. “It was a great experience being with them and having them help me learn the game,” Matthews told me. “They taught me how to carry myself as a major leaguer. I remember one time McCovey, who was my locker mate, saw me throw a bat in anger after I had struck out, and he came up to me an-

grily and told me that major leaguers don’t do that and that I needed to act more professionally. When someone of that stature tells you something like that, you have to listen.” It must have done some good because that year he became the 1972 National League “Rookie of the Year,” while playing for the San Francisco Giants. I asked him about another of his Giant teammates, Bobby Bonds, also the father of Barry Bonds, who had a reputation for being a difficult player and a so-called “clubhouse cancer,” having played for more than a few major league clubs. “I don’t know who started that about him, but I did not find that to be true,” Matthews said. “Bobby was always hustling and seemed to give a good effort. I think he was a good teammate and I think Bobby warrants consideration for the Hall of Fame and so does his son.” I asked him about his trademark hats, of which he said he had 2,500 of them. He told me that he liked wearing them and that they were in part a tribute to the Negro Leagues. “I remember seeing films of those Negro League games and seeing everybody in the stands being dressed in their Sunday best and wearing all these sharp hats. I thought that was a good look and starting getting

my own hats to wear.” During his remarks at the banquet, he spoke very glowingly of the work ethic of his former Phillie teammate, Pete Rose. “I know about the gambling thing, and there is no place for that, but I know of no one who worked harder or hustled more than Pete,” Matthews said. “He was always at the batting cages, taking his cuts, hours before the rest of us. When Pete got out of prison after serving four months for tax evasion, the first thing he wanted to do was to go to a batting cage and start taking swings, and this was when he was 51 years old.” ESPN analyst, Tim Kurkjian, told numerous baseball anecdotes, some involving his own lack of height. He commented on Mike Mussina’s Hall of Fame chances. “I don’t think he will get in this year, but I think he most certainly will get in next year,” Kurkjian said. “I think it is one of the great injustices that he has not gotten in yet. I have voted for him each year and voted for him again this year.” The emotional highlight of the evening came with Dwier Brown’s remarks about his role in “Field of Dreams.” Like Kevin Costner’s character in the film, Brown had a rocky relationship with his father too. Brown’s father died during the filming of “Field of Dream,” and it made his role in the film all the more poignant. Brown said as he has traveled around the country it seems that whenever people realize who he is that he becomes a surrogate

father figure to those he encounters. People many times tearfully tell him how his role helped to heal a rift that they may have had with their own fathers. He said the cast of “Field of Dreams” had no idea that the film would have the impact that it did on people. In addition to the relationships between fathers and sons or fathers and daughters, the baseball aspect served as a good way to link generations, bonding them together and showing the continuity that it represents. He said it was a real privilege to have been part of the film. Additionally, at the banquet, 45-year city Streets and Parks employee, Jon Markley was inducted as the latest member of the Bowman Field Hall of Fame. He was saluted for the loving care and attention he gave Bowman Field during his 45-year tenure with the City of Williamsport The latest honoree of the Williamsport Sports Walk was announced. That was long-time Williamsport Sun-Gazette Sports Editor, Ray Keyes, who worked for the Sun-Gazette from the late 1930s until his death in 1988. He covered Little League Baseball from its inception in 1939. He was a tireless promoter of Williamsport minor league baseball teams through the years, and when Williamsport lost minor league baseball at various times, he worked hard to bring about its return through his own extensive contacts in major league baseball. The banquet raised more than $6,500 for the National Alliance for Mental Illness Northcentral Pennsylvania Chapter.

Their variety of colors keeps you from spending these colder months in basic black, and like printed turtlenecks above, gives you a chance to flash a pop of color from beneath your standard neutral cardigan. Their colorful tights and leggings give you a playful dash of color above winter boots. For warm activewear at a reasonable price, look no further than Old Navy. Their compression leggings feature flatlock seaming to prevent chafing and are made with moisture-wicking fabric. They come in standard black, but also tone-ontone color blocking, florals, and stripes. While technically meant for the gym, these workout leggings also make a great base layer and can be worn on their own come spring. And don’t forget that famous performance fleece, in both pullovers and jackets. Again, even though they are not technically a base layer, these toppers are breathable and light enough to layer for the winter. You can mix a workout jacket with its longer sleeves and thumb holes with standard office wear, like a blazer, to give your cold-weather work ensemble some sporty edge. Speaking of fleece, Amazon has you covered with all the lightweight matching sets you can dream of. You can purchase individual pieces, or matching tops and bottoms at every price point. If you find a set you love, order it in multiple colors for a variety of outfitting options. I also recommend Amazon for fleece-lined socks.

You can get both trousers socks and casual slipper socks, either as single pairs or in multipacks. Warm and durable socks are a must-have for the winter. Even if you’re not an avid winter hunter or skier, but you still want a guaranteed, highquality base layer, check out mid-range retailers like L.L. Bean and Lands’ End. Both brands have light-to-mid weight base layers for men and women. You’ll spend a bit more, but you’ll also get a better fit and a few more features, like odor resistant fabric. If you’re truly not playing when it comes to staying warm this winter, LL Bean has high-performance base layers for day, while Lands’ End thermaksin sleepwear has you literally covered at night. If you feel like your base and mid-layers are a bit boring, you can pump things up with your outerwear and winter weather accessories. Graphic coats, hats, and gloves in bright colors, and oversized scarves can elevate your basic layers to make a stylish wintertime statement. If you’re going with patterned outwear, keep the accessories neutral. On the flip side, if you need to jazz up your grey overcoat, go for prints and color in your hat, gloves, and scarf. I love the idea of a plaid scarf with a solid-colored coordinated glove-and-hat set to breathe some fresh air into your standard black puffer coat. No matter where you pick up your base layer and winter wear, be sure to cover your gaps when you head outside. Ankles, wrists, necks, and ears should all be protected to keep your body heat where it belongs, on your body.

County Hall Corner War of the Words By Larry Stout

W

ords are powerful. In the world of politics, words are the instruments of positive engagement, building support for an action, position or initiative, but can also be the weapons of destruction, tearing apart an opponent to make way for a new course of direction. In this sense, public discourse can sometimes resemble a battlefield, where each side is firing volleys at each other, with ‘victory’ not always clear until some time later. This is why the “public comments” period of the Lycoming County Commissioners Meetings are often the most exciting part of the meeting. The Tuesday work session on January 8th was such a meeting when at the end, a Jersey Shore resident again brought up a hot potato issue from the previous month about a county commission appointment. In early December, Joseph Reighard was selected to fill an opening on the Lycoming County Planning Commission over Linda Sosniak by a 2-1 vote. Reighard was unquestionably qualified for the position, but there was some question over the procedural matters of his selection. The fact that Sosniak is a woman sparked outrage in a certain element of the community, as dozens came to the December meetings to voice their indignation over this alleged male hegemony in county affairs.

During December, the public comments section of the county commissioner meetings saw one person after other, almost all of which were women, complaining that the two who voted for Reighard (Commissioners McKernan and Mussare) were biased against women and that their decision was “arbitrary and capricious.” That word “capricious” stuck out to me because I would wager in a given month of conversation, I would rarely hear it more than once. Curiously, though, it seemed that at least a third of those standing at the podium to voice their ‘personal’ concerns sounded very much like they were an echo chamber. It was a War of the Words. As Commissioner McKernan remarked, “It seemed orchestrated.” But why? Is an appointment to the county Planning Commission that critical? Really? In the big picture, yes, because it does come back to politics and

COUNTY HALL “controlling the narrative.” Linda Sosniak is undoubtedly a very fine woman and has served in public office on the Picture Rocks Borough Council. But she is also a member of the Democratic Party, and several observers noted that it was more than coincidental that those many of the ones who packed the commissioners chambers to argue for her appointment to the Planning Commission were members of her recent failed state representative campaign. And it was not coincidental that the two votes in favor for Reighard were Republicans, and the one vote against (Commissioner Mirabito) was a Democrat. And so it was that during a somewhat

short and uneventful work session which was about to adjourn last Tuesday suddenly enlivened once again over the volley fired by this Jersey Shore resident. He made a lengthy complaint yet again about the appointment of Mr. Reighard and demanded that Commissioner Mussare defend a statement that he was alleged to have said that was quoted in the local daily newspaper about the appointment process. Mr. Mussare started to respond and barely got one sentence out before he was interrupted by the man who challenged what he had just said. At that point, Commissioner Mussare used one of the powerful weapons in the War

of the Words. He leaned back in his chair and said nothing. He refused to respond. He told the man that it was obvious that he was not actually interested in an answer but simply wanted to make a point, so Mr. Mussare rested his case. Sometimes one of the wisest actions is to not give bullets to the individual who has an empty gun aimed at you. There are many weapons in the War of the Words. One is to beat a drum over and over with a powerful word. Mark Twain said the difference between the right word and almost the right word is “the difference between lightning and lightning bug.” This is why “capricious” was so carefully chosen. It is a word that virtually no one uses because it is a loaded word. To say an action is “capricious” generally conveys the idea of arbi-

trary, fickle, or careless. However, these are synonyms. As an adjective, the word actually means a sudden or odd or unpredictable change. So, by calling an action ‘capricious’ is quite clever, because it is a double-edged sword implying not just poor judgment but even an element of mental instability. It is a polite way of calling someone an idiot. And this is politics, folks. As Roberta Flack sung so beautifully, it is “killing me softly.” The elephant in the room is the Republican Party which is the majority party among the three county commissioners, so the opposition must use an elephant gun to make their point. We see it played out at a state and national level as well, depending on which party holds the reins of power. It is a good lesson for all of us — words can inspire, and they can destroy, so choose them well.

An American Hero By Andy Kline

J

anuary 18, 2018, will forever remain the worst day of my life. I was just getting up and around in my hotel room near Phoenix, Ariz., preparing for three days of golf in the morning and the Barrett Jackson Auto Auction in the evenings. At around 6 a.m. — 8 a.m. PA time — I saw a news flash about a U.S Marshal shot in Harrisburg, PA. My heart stopped, and I immediately texted my best friend Chris, “You OK Brother?” A reply never came. About 15 minutes later my phone rang, and it was my life long friend Justin, he asked, “Are you sitting down?” My first response was, “Tell me it wasn’t Hilly.” He said, “It was.” It was at that moment I learned that my best friend of 40 years was shot and killed while serving a warrant. I would be lying to say that part of me didn’t die that morning in that hotel room in Scottsdale because it most certainly did. As quickly as I heard the dreaded news, I went into doing the only thing I knew how, I was trained to adapt and overcome at any cost but no matter what, never show weakness or emotion, so I set out doing just that. I started trying to contact my family, his family, and our friends — as I felt they should be the ones to hear it from me or I should be offering my condolences to them. I knew I had to call my mom, I knew my dad was tough and could handle anything if he saw it on the news but I knew this news would crush my mom, she had to hear it from me. She answered, expecting to hear how it was warm and sunny in Arizona on that January day but that all changed when I asked if she heard about the Marshal that was shot. She said she had not and I replied, “It was Hilly, and

he’s gone.” At that moment she began to cry, but immediately her instinct to protect her “child” kicked in and she began to say, “It’s not true, it’s not him, I will find out, it will be OK.” My only reply was that “it was true, it was him.” It was after this call that I felt a sickening feeling, I had Chris’s number, but I did not have his wife’s, the thought of not being able to tell her how sorry I was and that I would be there for her and the kids haunted me for days until she called me. Christopher David Hill or “Hilly” as his close friends called him was a true warrior and as said by many, probably one of the best, most highly trained special operators in the country. But for those of us that knew Hilly, he was much more than a true professional, instructor and a man that loved his country and man that knew the meaning of sacrifice. He was the most caring and loving husband, father, son, brother and friend anyone could ever ask for. Chris loved his family and friends and enjoyed playing tricks, pranks and telling jokes. Chris always wanted to know how you and your family were doing and never talked about himself. Chris and I met in 1977 at the now-closed Watsontown Elementary School; we were in the same kindergarten class. We became quick friends that first year and my mom even drove us to school at times. As we entered middle school at Warrior Run and then high school, we remained at each other’s side hunting, fishing and doing everything high school friends do. Hilly, myself, and Chris Frantz remained close friends since meeting in kindergarten, but our start in middle school brought four new life long friends into the group, Justin, Mike, Pete, and Buddy. The “7” of us continued to do things throughout our High school days and into our adulthood.

Chris and I attended Waynesburg College together in 1991 and in 1993 Chris went to see an Army Recruiter and told him he would join if he could be a Ranger. The recruiter’s reply was, “You will have to pass the course,” and in typical Hilly Fashion he said, “You get me in, I will pass it.” Sure enough, he did, and he served four years in the 75th Ranger Reg, 3rd Battalion. It was not long after Hilly signed up that it inspired Chris Frantz, Mike and I to join the Army together, on the same day. Years later the “7” would gather every February/March in Eagles Mere, PA and spend a long weekend together at a house rental. This all started almost ten years ago during the weekend of our 20th class reunion. I had insisted that the “7” be present at my house for a gathering, it was there I explained that none of us were getting younger and we needed to at least meet yearly if not more — it was agreed by all to do so. We would go to Pete’s and attend Kid Rock concerts together, had Lake parties and much more. Little did I know, looking back now, this would become one of the best ideas in my life. From there forward we gathered together with our families, and we shared our old stories and listened to new ones but most of all, for at least that weekend, we were all back together. The “7” of us remained as close brothers right up to, and after Hilly’s passing, in fact, I credit getting through the last year on the friendship of the remaining “6”. As we approach a year since Chris’s passing, I also wanted to pass on some events that unfolded during the two days last January at his viewing and funeral. Several days after his death his wife contacted me and asked if I would be a pallbearer, all I could say was that I would be honored. I flew back into Williamsport from Arizona at 11 p.m. the Sunday before the funeral and was surprised to see two “members of the

6,” Justin and Pete, they were there to pick me up. We went back to my house, had a few beers, and I think around 3 a.m. we finally went to bed after I had ransacked my home office and garage for all the pictures of Hilly I could muster. That Tuesday Chris Frantz flew in from North Carolina, and I had already booked rooms in Hershey for the “6” — Frantz, Mike, Justin, Pete, Buddy and myself along with our wives would all be together to send off our brother to Valhalla. After we all attended the viewing around 9 p.m. we all arrived at our hotel in Hershey where after checking in I asked the front desk attendant if we could use the hotel lobby/breakfast dining area to gather and remember our fallen friend, she was so nice to comply. For over six hours and past 3 a.m. we told every story we could think of about Hilly over a few cases of beer, take out pizza, bologna and cheese and a mountain of Middleswarth BBQ Chips. We offered anyone and everyone who passed by to stop and listen for a minute and partake in our memorial feast and learn about our friend. We had some pictures of Chris (growing up in an age without cell phones/cameras there was not as many as would be today), and at times there was hardly a dry eye in the room. By 2 a.m. I had to retire in order to be at the Funeral home by 8 a.m. I arrived at 8 a.m. sharp as instructed and sat in the lobby of the funeral home for about 30 minutes. It was then I realized after noticing at the viewing the night before that the members of Chris’s Special Operations Group (SOG) had not left his casket. I later found out that they all stayed with him, 24/7 from the time he died until after the funeral, almost a week. As I sat on the bench wondering what the day would bring a female Marshal noticed me, her name was Sue. She sat down and asked what office I was from; I explained that I was not a Marshal

self and two other Marshals were escorted into the arena by the U.S. Marshal Pipe and Drum band. The stadium floor was packed with Deputy U.S. Marshals and law enforcement officers from every state. The Arena’s seats were filled on all the lower levels and from what I was told over 5,000 people were in attendance. Members of the 75th Ranger Regiment and the Florida Dept. of Corrections were also there. There was also a huge presence of members of the Warrior Run Class of 1990 as well as classes before and after. As I looked up, I could see the members of the “6” and their families as well. After an impressive ceremony, everyone moved outside for the “last call,” and the helicopter fly-over on that frigid day. That day Jason and I had exchanged some stories about Chris. Over the weeks and months that followed I sent photos, newspaper clippings, and stories about Chris, and he did the same. He shared how he and Chris met when they both started and went to Marshal school together, and they became close friends. It was during this time that I found out that Chris was the class leader and held everyone to a higher standard at the Marshal school — go figure! This year Jason came back to this area be a guest speaker at Chris’s #32 Warrior Run jersey retirement ceremony this past August. This past June I sent Jason a text asking if he knew of a town where one of the “6” lives in North Carolina. At first, he thought I was joking, and then replied he grew up there and lived close! So in July and November on our visits to North Carolina, three members of the “6” met with Jason and that was how the “6” came full circle and with the addition of Jason is now back to the “7”. No one will ever replace Chris, but I am positive that Hilly would be proud to have Jason holding down his “spot.” RIP Brother.

and that I was Chris’s friend since kindergarten. She hugged me and said she was sorry for my loss, I then showed her, and some others, pictures of Chris from kindergarten till recently I had stored on my phone. I told her I was a pallbearer and she said she would “put me” with a Marshal that will ensure I get everywhere I need to be that day. It was then that I met Jason, another pallbearer. Upon meeting Jason during and the 45-minute car ride on the funeral route, we exchanged how we each knew Chris and most importantly our phone numbers. I would have never imagined that our meeting that day would turn into a friendship and in several ways help each of us deal with the loss of our friend. Chris’s casket was loaded into the SOG team Bearcat and along with his Team members led the funeral behind a motorcade of motorcycles. We followed behind as did hundreds of Deputy U.S. Marshals, all the city streets and highways were blocked off, and citizens lined the route. As we passed an elementary school, all the children stood outside holding hand made signs thanking their “Hero” and honoring Chris Hill for his sacrifice. Fire trucks and police cars lined the route as police and firefighters stood at attention. I was in awe of the turnout as thousands lined the route. I began to think that Chris was probably thinking, “All this for me?” But in fact, Chris was an American Hero. His service to his country was lifelong as a Ranger, a Sergeant for the Florida Department of Corrections and a Deputy U.S. Marshal. Chris spent 25 years of dedicated service protecting those here and abroad. Upon arrival at the Giant Center, we drove into a rear loading area with access to the arena floor via a tunnel. After everything was in place, the eight pallbearers (his son, father, brother, Jason, my-

The Roving Sportsman… Off and Running! By Jon Pries

W

ith January past its midpoint and Old Man Winter tightening his grip as best he can, one begins to wonder just what to do to pass the time. Well, the clock is running, and there really isn’t anything you can do about the weather except wait it out in hopes that spring just might come early this year. One way to make better use of our time is to gather up information and begin the planning process for the upcoming seasons we hope to participate in. From now through the end of February is the season for Conventions and Shows throughout the country, where manufacturers, outfitters, retailers, and suppliers gather to show off their wares. New products will be introduced — from archery equipment to new firearms, ammunition and every imaginable new gadget and type of gear that, hopefully, will catch the eye of hunters, shooters, fishermen and sportsmen of all interests.

The Archery Trade Association just ended its annual show on Saturday, January 12 at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, Kentucky with a record number of vendors and attendees. The Safari Club also completed its 47th annual convention, held in Reno, Nevada, declaring it “a rousing success!” More than 15,000 hunters from around the world, along with over 1,000 vendors with various goods and services prompted the SCI President, Paul Babaz, to declare, “the enthusiasm of members and exhibitors was incredible — the best I’ve ever seen.” The annual Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade Show (SHOT Show) will run from January 22 to 25 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This mega-gathering of manufacturers, retailers, media members, and outdoor representatives will take over the Sands Hotel and Convention Center, with aisles and aisles of vendors that will take up miles of aisle ways and truly take days to cover. This is where most manufacturers will introduce all of their new lines for the year and

Weather permitting; you might also consider gathering several of your turkey hunting buddies and head to Nashville, Tennessee for the 43rd annual National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) Convention and Sports Show. It will be held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort from February 13-17 and is the premier destination for anyone who really enjoys turkey hunting. There will be calling contests, call making contests, auctions, raffles, hundreds of vendors with all of the turkey hunting gear imaginable and seminars and demonstrations throughout the convention. To help plan your trip, contact the NWTF at 1-800-8436983, or gather information at their website, www.nwtf.org. Whether you drive down to Harrisburg to the Great American Outdoor Show or travel on down to the NWTF Convention and Sports Show, make sure to plan enough time to take in everything. Either event will take hours, and preferably days to really see everything that is offered. Afterward, you can sit back in your easy chair by the fireplace as snow gently falls outside your window and daydream about the new gun, bow or hunting trip that is in your future!

retailers from all over the globe will come to place their annual orders. For weeks to come, news releases, test and evaluation articles and videos covering these new products will be released for public consumption. But what about those of us who are snowbound here in Pennsylvania and can’t get to all of these far-away destinations? Well, there is good news. The Great American Outdoor Show, held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg will be running from February 2-10 this year. Many of these new products will be on display, giving everyone a chance to handle the equipment and ask questions of the manufacturer’s representatives. There will be nine halls full of guns and accessories, archery equipment, outfitters and boat captains, RVs and boats — virtually everything imaginable for the sportsman. Celebrity appearances, seminars, and hands-on activities will occur every day, along with auctions, raffles and the opportunity to obtain autographs from and photos with some of your favorite outdoor characters. How Many Bears?

N

eedless to say, black bears have been the topic of a lot of conversations around these parts in recent weeks — especially in light of the attack that took place a few weeks back. I’m sure everybody in the area is aware that a bear viciously attacked and badly injured a woman just south of Muncy. Apparently, it was a female and cubs may have been involved and deer parts were also in the area. The surprised bear attacked the woman when she stepped outside in the dark and dragged her nearly a hundred yards; it also attacked the woman’s small dog. This attack was a bit unusual in that the bear dragged the victim such a great distance and inflicted so much damage. Bear attacks in Pennsylvania, however, are fairly rare and generally don’t result in so much injury. Even when we are not hunting them many of us, me included, have had

encounters with bears and the bear usually heads off in the opposite directionthankfully. Situations like the recent attack do raise some questions like why were the female and cubs not denned up by this time? Ken Well, consider the mild Hunter weather we were having and the fact that plenty of deer remains were available throughout the countryside and that may help explain why some bears were late to den. Another factor that we may have to look at is how many bears are out there; keep in mind the more bears roaming the countryside the more likely there will be bear/human conflicts. It wasn’t that many years ago that we were speculating that there were at least 10,000 bears throughout much of Pennsylvania and even though we don’t see them on a regular basis that’s still a lot of bears. These days the number of bears in Pennsylvania has

be thinking we may want to take a closer look at the bear numbers. As numbers continue to grow along with expanding territory the question arises, where do we try to halt the expansion? I won’t get into all the details right now, but game commission biologists and commissioners are looking at some coming changes to bear seasons. One of those changes would be to extend some seasons; for example, a change under consideration is to allow bear hunting the entire first week

of firearms deer season in all units. Another change might involve archery season; last year you could hunt bears for six days in the next to the last week of archery deer season, but next year they may allow a two week season in midOctober and concurrent with the statewide muzzleloader season. I’m sure there will be pros and cons to whatever changes are made-we’ll keep an eye on it. While we are on the subject of bears I have just completed one of my largest paintings-a black

bear standing up looking at a rather surprised raccoon. I’ve been putting updates of the painting on Facebook; go to Ken Hunter Art. I hope to have the painting at the Early Bird Sports Expo at the Bloomsburg Fairgrounds later this week. The show days and hours are Thursday 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday 10 a.m.-9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. If by chance you don’t ice-fish and you are looking for something to do stop by and say hello and enjoy an excellent outdoor show. doubled to around 20,000-that’s a lot of bears. Not only have bear numbers continued to increase it’s also true that bears are moving into areas that they did not formally inhabit. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not suggesting that we have too many, but we do have to be more aware that encounters are more likely to happen especially as our homes and their home territory increasingly overlap. Apparently, the Pennsylvania Game Commission or at least some members of the commission may

hardwood and filling the building with rousing toe-tapping sounds. Size and conference affiliations noted, Bucknell basketball these days is more entertaining. It might have had something to do with the exciting 55-54 Bison win over American University as opposed to 6th ranked Michigan State’s romp over the Nittany Lions, leaving them winless in Big Ten play. During coach Nathan Davis’s tenure, the Bison entered this season with a 6833 mark during the past four seasons. Over the years they have won 17 regular season league titles and appeared in eight NCAA Tournaments. Most notable are their two wins over #3 ranked Kansas in 2005 followed by a win over #9 Arkansas in 2006. Entering this season Nittany Lion head man Pat Chambers had compiled a 113122 mark since arriving in Happy Valley in 2011. In their long history, PSU has made 9 NCAA Tournament appearances. They have captured two National Invitation Tournament championships, winning the NIT last year and in 2009. The two schools have met a few times during the regular season with PSU holding the upper hand. The Nittany Lions had their own Sojka experience when they visited Lewisburg a few years ago. So if you enjoy college basketball, or just want to take in a game at the two arenas, have at it and enjoy the experiences. Just make sure you wear the appropriate attire. That Sojka orange would certainly clash at the BJC.

cozy and inviting. There is not a bad seat in the house, you always run into folks you know, and the product on the court is top-notch and competitive. The sight of thousands of orange-clad spectators resembling a traffic cone convention gives testament to the fact that fashion statements are not always in vogue, but their enthusiasm is genuine. Entering the BJC is a bit more corporate. The employees are friendly, but it seems more like a job than a happening campus experience. On the day I was there a ‘white out’ was in session with white t-shirts placed on most of the arena’s seat locations. It was an impressive blue & white look, quite different than Sojka’s blazing orange. With a capacity of 15,000+, most of the arena’s second deck of empty seats is hidden behind large blue curtains, no doubt to give the feel of a more intimate gathering. Both events included ‘side trappings’ fitting to their locations. During timeouts and stoppages of play, the Sojka faithful are entertained by active cheerleaders and an orange-wigged student leader supervising t-shirt tosses and pizza giveaways. The student section usually features a boisterous bunch doing their very best to distract and harass opposing players. The BJC has all of the above to a much bigger scale. Yes, they do give away t-shirts but also television sets and $250 cash prizes for making free-throws. On this Sunday occasion, the half-time show featured the Penn State Blue Band that marched onto the court engulfing the

Every year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs.

improved playground for children. All three areas can coexist in a fun and safe recreational setting.” Complete silence. Mr. Campana went against Council’s wishes and began pouring concrete right away. They have since laid the foundations without ever meeting with the City’s Recreation Commission. So what? Council questioned Gabe and expressed many other concerns. Who is on this Memorial Park Coalition, and do they have their clearances? What is their role and will they have police reporting powers? What a mess.

Several members of the Memorial Park Coalition had no knowledge they were even on this new committee. It was absolute bedlam. Nobody knows what the heck is going on. Others questioned how this project was being funded. The city already adopted their 2019 budget on December 13th with an increase in taxes. We cut several positions and eliminated a great deal, but now we have monies to bring back basketball? Another believed the faster-paced basketball might not be a good fit with those playing pickleball. I

totally understand this councilman’s concern. Can you picture an older man retrieving a loose pickle during a heated pickup game? I am all in favor of bringing basketball back to Memorial Park. I will also admit that I was very disappointed in Mr. Campana when he removed them five years ago as part of his drug and gang reduction policy. But kudos to him and his staff for realizing they made a mistake. The hoops will be back sometime very soon. I am just hoping that basketball and pickleball can coexist. To be continued. Cheers.

Central Mountain Standout Justin Neff Wins Scout Team Defensive Player of the Year Honors at Penn State

T

race McSorley breaks to his left runs away from a defender and throws a perfect ball downfield to a receiver as nearly 110,000 fans cheer in celebration. As the crowd becomes more and more raucous with each successful play and drive, a small group of players stand together on the sideline and exchange looks. If people in the stands or even coaches on the sidelines wouldn’t look over, it might not even be noticed. The scout team plays an important role in the professional and college ranks. It gets the first teams ready for the weekend. Justin Neff, a former Central Mountain player and preferred walk-on, was awarded Defensive Scout Team Player of the Year honors at Penn State University recently. Neff grew up a Penn State fan, and when it came time to select a college, Penn State came calling, and all other options were thrown out the window. Neff was in eighth grade when another Central Mountain player joined Penn State as a preferred walk-on. Von Walker joined the team as a walk-on but worked his way to becoming a team captain. He

eventually was awarded a scholarship and became a well-known athlete in both State College and Lock Haven. “Whenever Penn State offered the preferred walk-on, wanting to stay close to home, and with what Von was able to do, I just knew I wanted to be here,” Neff said. “Coming out of high school the biggest adjustment you’re going to make is speed and strength. I worked out hard at the end of my senior year and then I came here. The speed and strength were still far above what I expected.” Neff appears to be on the same track as Walker as his hard work and commitment to the team are starting to get noticed. “When I was in eighth grade, Von Walker was graduating, and he was like the big thing,” Neff said. “Everybody used to watch him on Friday nights. Then him going to Penn State and seeing how he did there, I knew that’s where I wanted to go. I wanted to do the same thing and make my own way here if I could.” Neff ’s weeks aren’t filled with the type of glamour most people would associate with being a football player on the campus of Penn State University.

“A big thing we do for the guys who don’t play in the games on Saturday is have a scrimmage on Sundays,” Neff said. “I’d say about halfway through the season of my first year is when it started to settle down and began to feel like high school again.” Neff settled in and eventually found his role as the top defensive player on the scout team. He works constantly on perfecting other teams’ defenses. It shows how unselfish he is as each week he faces a new challenge to learn a new playbook. Nearly 110,000 fans celebrating a big play by the offense, but just a small group of players on the sideline smiling and putting a mental notch by the scout team defense for a job well done. “There are certain plays we go through in practice during the year we may or may not pull out during a game,” Neff said. “If we pull it out and it works, we all high five on the sideline and say ‘scout team touchdown,’ because we knew we put into that play.” At the football team’s annual banquet Neff was awarded his plaque for scout team Defensive Player of the Year. The entire team was there to thank him and congratulate him. “On my way up people were yelling ‘well deserved’ and giving me high fives and shaking my hand,” Neff said. “They gave me support on my way back and said I deserved it. It meant a lot.”

He works a full load of classes while keeping up with the same schedule for football as every other player on the team. He learns the playbook, he lifts weights, runs, and stays at the top of his game throughout the year. Brett “The biggest thing for Crossley me is to just go out with a positive attitude,” Neff said. “You can go out there, and you can just go halfway through it because you’re not starting. I try to do the best I can and get the offense ready for the game they have that weekend.” Neff was quick to make the adjustments to the strength and speed of the team as he prepared for his initial season. “I knew the best thing I could do to help myself was get into the weight room and study the playbook,” Neff said. “That way I could be ahead mentally and I would know where to be on a certain play. I wouldn’t have to rely on speed alone to get there.” During a typical week, Neff, a criminology major, will balance a workload of classes and practice with the team. Unlike more of the well-known players, Neff is tasked with learning the opposition’s defensive plays as well as keeping up with what Penn State is doing, as well.
