Pigskin Predictions

O

K y’all. You know how this works. We’ve got a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of space to do it. So pitter-patter, let’s get at ‘er! Here are this year’s Super Bowl Predictions from around the area! I asked my BF Steve first, and since he’s not much of a football fan, he was hard-pressed to come up with a prediction. But he decided that the Pats are going to take it this year, but doesn’t see a big scoring game happening. He’s thinking the Rams are going to lose 21-7. As always I checked in with the News Team, and as always they had some interesting takes on the outcome. Per the norm, Jeff ’s just in it for pizza, beer, and commercials. I had to clean up the language a bit, but Dustin thinks the Pats are going to irritate everyone again and get the win 28-24. Jimmy wants to the see the Rams take it 34-31, but thinks Dustin is probably right. He then said something to the effect of, “Flippin’ Pats” — or something like that. Next up is Loyalsock’s Head Football Coach Justin VanFleet. He’s also taking the Pats for the win and predicts a fairly close game at 31-24. While we are talking coaches, from up on the hill, Williamsport Head Coach Chuck Crews is having a battle of heart vs. head. His heart says the Rams are going win 45-35, but his head says the Pats have it 34-17. From the gridiron to the infield, Mountie Baseball Head Coach Paul ‘Smokey’ Stover is calling it the same at Coach VanFleet. He’s got New England 31-24. I know it’s hard to believe, but Crosscutter’s lead man Gabe Sinicropi is actually a pretty funny guy. He sent me this when asked about the big game,

“Gladys Knight’s National Anthem will clock in at over 2 min. Maroon 5’s first song at halftime will be ‘One More Night.’ Commentators will mention Sean McVey’s age at least three times. Steph A touchdown will be Nordstrom overturned by replay, and Tony Romo will correctly predict five plays. Oh, the game? The Patriots have a chip on their shoulder. New England wins 34 to 27.” Thanks for the entertainment Gabe. Lou Hunsinger thinks the Pats are going to take it also. He’s predicting a 35-17 LA loss. He believes Brady is a “wily veteran that always rises to the occasion,” and that LA’s defense is somewhat suspect. Our County correspondent Larry Stout had this to say, “Patriots 24-Rams 14. The Rams have had a storied year, but have not been impressing anyone lately, whereas the Patriots are peaking at the right time. I don’t believe there will be any late-game heroics, because the Pats will take charge early and not let go. I am no fan of New England, but experience is invaluable in the Super Bowl, and this is far from their first rodeo. Would not be surprised if they even win big.” Scott Lowery seems to be suffering a bit of football ennui. He said, “Patriot fatigue is a growing malady. Enough already. There are 27 other teams I’d rather see in this game, so I have no rooting interest. The Rams can be fun to watch, but I’ll go with the boring but proven Belichick and Brady. Patriots 31-23.”

Pastor Tim is preaching for the underdogs. He believes the Rams are going win 24-21. Planet Mom says it should be the Saints over the Chiefs 28-7, and then there was some laughing. I never did get an actual prediction from her… County Commissioner Tony Mussare has a similar feeling to Mindy. He would have rather seen the Saints get the win over Kansas City, but when push comes to shove he’s taking the Pats over the Rams 27-24. Gary Chrisman is keeping his prediction short and close. He’s calling a Pats win 31-30. We don’t discriminate around here. We even got Chris ‘Doc’ Masse from the Sun-Gazette to chime in. While he believes there’s no better than Brady — past, present, or future — he believes the Rams are better overall. So he’s taking LA to win 28-20. Mike Rupert is also calling a close New England win. He thinks the Rams are going to lose 27-21. Fairfield Auto Group’s lead man, Rick Quigley, tossed his thoughts in too and is one of the few calling a Rams win. He’s thinking they are going to take it 31-27. Seems fair. Jimmy doesn’t think this game is going to be close at all. He’s predicting a 42-17 Patriots win, claiming that the Brady/Belichick Dynasty will continue with a statement win. Personally, I would like to see the Rams win, but honestly, I don’t know enough about football to really have an opinion. I’ll be working behind the bar at the Sons of Italy that night, so I’m just hoping someone will bring me snacks! So there you have it. A little bit of everything and everyone! Huge shout out to everyone who gave me a prediction! It’s always fun to see who will come out right! As always, if you are out celebrating the big game, please be safe. No drinking and driving! Call a cab, or grab an Uber or Lyft.

Insinger Picks Up 1,000th Career Coaching Wins as Players and Family Celebrate the Longtime Lancer Coach By Brett R. Crossley

Y

ears ago, Ron “CI” Insinger, a freshly graduated college student looking for a job, was offered two choic-

es. The Sullivan County graduate was offered the head coaching job at Canton, and a coaching position at Loyalsock. The decision might have been a difficult one at the time, but the final choice changed the course of history for one local program. Insinger obviously chose Loyalsock and quickly started to build something that would become an institution throughout District 4 and beyond. Insinger recently captured his 1,000th career win as Loyalsock defeated Hughesville over the weekend. It was a monumental achievement for the coach, whose first win came against the now-defunct Lock Haven High School.

“It’s crazy, but I was offered the Loyalsock job and the Canton job the same day within an hour of each other,” Insinger said. “I was flipping a coin and went with the best of three. It’s crazy. It’s like the snap of a finger. Every year just goes by faster and faster.” For Loyalsock fans, players, and family they were blessed the coin flips went the way of the Lancers. After that first win against Lock Haven, CI continued to be a coaching staple on the benches of Loyalsock’s basketball courts. The balloons and banners gave it away, but when Loyalsock defeated Hughesville, giving coach Ron “CI” Insinger his 1,000th career win, the celebration was thundering. “I just feel very fortunate,” Insinger said. “I just feel very fortunate I landed a position at a young age, and it just blossomed. I’m very goal oriented. Every week I set goals for myself.

Insinger has been a force since taking over the Loyalsock job years ago. He built a family atmosphere that has trickled down to the smallest contributions of every player to have worn the Lancers maroon and white uniforms. The benches for his team cleared, but so did the stands as people rushed to the coach to celebrate the win. “It just warms my heart,” Insinger said. “It fills my heart with joy that I can help someone or touched their life in some way or another. They were excited and wanted to play.” The game was almost not played Saturday afternoon as the year’s first major snowstorm barreled down on the area. Even as the fans made their way to the gym, small flurries started to fall. By the end of the game, many expected to see their cars buried in the parking lot, but that just didn’t happen. Everything appeared to be working for the Lancers and Insinger as they celebrated the accomplishment. “I was so afraid we were going to get a phone call,” Insinger said of the weather. “You can still see the grass outside, so I think we’re alright.”

7 • Webb Weekly January 30, 2019

That’s what keeps me going. It motivates me.” His players ran over to the bench, quickly got in line for handshakes, and even more quickly ran from the line to pick up their coach. Insinger’s family, friends, and former players celebrated the longtime coach, who smiled throughout multiple postgame interviews. He was trailed by his grandkids, who were decked out in white shirts featuring a single numeral that together would display the milestone number. The 1,000 wins will be the shining numbers attached to his coaching resume, but the reactions of players and family will be the lasting legacy. When Bam Brima, who played one of his best games of the year against Hughesville, came to Loyalsock, he didn’t know anybody in the area. As he walked into Insinger’s office prior to basketball, he found his first friend and has since been one of the best athletes and students Loyalsock has seen in recent memory. “CI was my first friend here,” Brima said. “To get this for him and be a part of this means a lot to me, because I know it means it a lot to him.”

ith Williamsport streets covered with a sheet of ice, the result of snowstorms and freezing officials, officials at the City Highway Department admitted last night there is little they can do except to spread cinders at the more dangerous intersections. John M. Shaible, department superintendent, said it would be unwise to place cinders on all parts of the ice-covered thoroughfares because sewers would become clogged when warmer weather arrives. Except for the digging of ditches along the curbs in the business district and running a scraper over the ridge in the middle of the streets, the city has done little to remove snow from the streets. Following most of the recent snowstorms there has been a short period of thawing weather followed by severe cold, causing the ice to form.

Councilman George W. German earlier this winter said it would not be feasible to use the brushes or the scrapers on the street during a storm, such as other cities and the state department use. He said there is too much traffic in the city and in addition the snow would pile up in the gutters, preventing water running in the sewers during a thaw. He said removal of the pile snow from the gutters would be too expensive. Mr. Shaible explained highway crews are continually working cindering the sections of the city considered dangerous. He said the use of any salt composition with the idea of existing ice was prohibited by the expense involved and that in addition, a health law prevents the use of salt. Drivers in the city last night were called upon to exert more care than usual when snow started falling again, producing a covering for the ice already on the streets, and added uncertainty as to where the ice existed.

CONFRONTING DEATH When suddenly confronted with the death of a loved one, it is necessary to go through the grieving process, which doesn’t follow a fixed pattern. As such, each person must grieve in his or her own way and in his or her own time. There is no special time on the calendar when we can point and say that grief is over. Grief is also work, in that people must “work through” their grief, which can be a painful process. Grief can hurt as much, or more, than a physical wound. Fortunately, wounds heal. In the end, we do not “get over” the death of a loved one. We learn to live with the fact of his or her death. Grieving is an intensely emotional time and is often characterized by confusion, forgetting the “little things” occurring at this time, and fear connected with facing life without the person lost. That is why it is important to be patient and understanding. Just being present for support can help. To learn more about our funeral services, please call Michael R. Lingg, Supervisor or any of our staff at KNIGHT-CONFER FUNERAL HOME at 323-7717. We are located at 1914 Memorial Avenue facility. The American Sports Car – the Corvette By Andy Kline

Corvette. The Corvette was the dream of Harley Earl and has been America’s first and longest lasting sports car since it’s introduction to the world in 1953. In 1963 another well-known name in Corvette history helped to create the 1963 corvette, Zora Duntov. As Corvette’s first Chief Engineer, Duntov was responsible for increasing Corvette performance and horsepower from the early 60s through the early 70s. For 66 years (actually, 65, as there were no retail sale 1983 Corvettes) Corvette has been raising the bar year after year. I know some of you car buffs

B

y now I am sure many of you can see my passion for cars, trucks, and motorcycles (while I’m on a roll- ‘30s-’50s wooden boats). Although I enjoy looking at them all, my roots have always been wrapped firmly around the General Motors brand. I know some won’t understand brand loyalty, but I firmly feel that Buy American First is far more than a bumper sticker. Within GM is the company’s high-performance line and my most loved automobile, the

will want to point out the mid-70s to late 80s Corvettes as lackluster in appearance and performance. While I personally still like the 74-82 body style, I fully agree that performance suffered due to federal emission standards, the gas crisis( oil embargo) and insurance companies wanting horsepower reductions. My personal favorites are the ‘63 split window (in Silver Blue or Riverside Red), ‘67 convertible (in Goodwood Green or Sunfire Yellow) and all ‘68-72 Corvettes (preferably in War Bonnet Yellow, Steel Cities Gray or Elkhart Green). 1972 was the last year for both front and rear chrome bumpers, 1973 had just a rear chrome bumper due to the new federal safety standards requiring five-mph impact resistant bumpers. By 1974 the famous Corvette chrome bumper, after a 21-year run, was gone forever. NCRS stands for the National Corvette Restoration Society, and it was formed for the purpose of preserving, restoring and enjoying early Corvettes. Today there are 45 Chapters of NCRS throughout the country. These Chapters take turns holding a National Convention each year that is attended by members from all over the country. During these events, there are small (drive your Corvette) site seeing trips planned as well as outings, car shows, and judging. For members wishing to have their Corvette

judged, NCRS is the world standard in Corvette judging, and at all their state and national events, they offer judging. There are many classes and categories as well as level of awards – the prestigious “Top Flight” award means your car has been restored to strict factory standards. There are also awards for original, nonrestored Corvettes. In 1974, in the state of Indiana, NCRS was formed. Around that same time, my Aunt and Uncle- Wilma and Mitch Geiger started the Yosemite Corvette Club in Merced Ca. A year later, in 1975 they helped form the Northern CA chapter of NCRS and Mitch became NCRS member # 62. Forty-four years and three states later he is still NCRS member #62. Mitch started buying, selling, trading, fixing and later restoring Corvettes since he was able to drive (probably before) in the mid to late 1950s. To this day he has personally owned over 100 Corvettes, mostly 1950s-early 1970s. To say that Corvettes are in his blood would be an understatement. After almost 50 years, Wilma probably knows more about corvettes and tri-five Chevys (55-57) than most. April 2014 I was on a two-week coastto-coast motorcycle trip with my good friends Dave and Springer- I mapped out the route with key stops. The first official stop was Bowling Green KY, the National

CORVETTE

Corvette Museum. The National Corvette Museum was first brought up and talked about around 1985 by members of NCRS as a place to keep historical data, technical manuals, Corvette items, donations, and even Corvettes. It was first opened as an annex in 1994, and then as money was raised, additions were made. The museum is far from just a few parked cars; the history and artifacts on display cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Our visit was almost exactly two months after the infamous sinkhole cave in that swallowed 8 Corvettes in the

early hours of 2-12-14. About half the cars had been pulled from the hole; they were still covered in mud but on display. My visit there reminded me of the trips to Corvettes at Carlisle with my daughter, pointing out specific models or year only options to my friends as I had often done with her years earlier. The only 1983 Corvette in existence is on display at the museum. My favorite Corvette at the museum was a 1967, Rally Red, convertible (white top), big block 427, 4spd, factory side pipe car owned by Roy Orbison. I grew up listening to my mom

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WAY YOUR LEGS LOOK, BUT HOW THEY FEEL

Do you have restless legs? Do your legs feel tired, achy and ‘heavy’ by the end of the day? Do you get swelling, itching or tingling of the legs as the day goes on? Do you have varicose or spider veins? All of these symptoms can be caused by venous insufficiency.

singing his songs and to this day he is still one of my favorites. Roy used this car to go back and forth to the studio in 1988 when he was recording the Traveling Wilburys album –Vol. 1. In 2015, I started my search for my first Corvette, and in doing so, I thought joining NCRS would be a great place to start. It was then I had an idea, and I thought I would call NCRS and see if they recycle membership numbers. It was my hope that I could get # 61 or 63, even 620 as I thought it would be cool to have a number related to Mitch’s #62. After calling and speaking to the gentleman I was crushed to learn they did not recycle numbers and that at this point in 2015 they were around 61,500 members. It was at that point that the man on the phone said, I can sign you up and wait to issue you your number when it hits 62,000! I was elated and couldn’t give my credit card information fast enough. By the end of 2015, 40 years after Mitch became NCRS #62, I became NCRS # 62,000. After that, I got a tattoo with Chevrolet bowtie with the Corvette emblem inside and our membership numbers to commemorate it. I also bought my first Corvette that year, but that story is one in itself and for another time. Today his license plate reads NCRS 62, mine reads NCRS 62K. The Texas Chapter hosted the NCRS

National Convention in 2017 in San Antonio, and I was in town on business. Since I was flying in and was unable to spend a full day there, I did not register since I would not be able to attend most of the functions. I did go over the very first day of set up and asked the NCRS volunteers who were watching all the parked Corvettes outside where I could see about paying to view the cars inside. They directed me inside, and after a long walk through the convention center, I found a woman who directed me to the judging arena. Upon entry- or almost entry, I was informed for insurance reasons only judges and owners could be inside while the cars were being parked. I was told to come back the next day and the walk-in fee to see the cars was only $10, well worth seeing a magnitude of fully restored, rare and special performance Corvettes. The next day I took an extended lunch break and was overwhelmed by the amount of “ tankers, fuelies, big blocks,” and other special order and high-performance models. It is hard to fathom how an NCRS meeting in northern California in 1975 could result in member #62, and over 40 years, 3,000 miles and 61,000 members later I am enjoying the same hobby as member # 62,000. I encourage all of you to “take a kid to a car show,” the hobby needs a future.

he year 2019 will be remembered in Lycoming County for decades for the ‘ballotopocalypse’ that will take place. For starters, there will be primary and general elections for positions such as the three Lycoming County commissioners, five county row offices, two court of common pleas judges, the mayor of Williamsport, and four Williamsport city council members. Then, to add a little more mess to the mix, US Congressman Tom Marino has announced his resignation, which means that there will be a special election sometime soon to fill his seat. Since there will be plenty of suitors to choose from for all these elections, this column will attempt in coming months to introduce to the voters as many as these individuals as possible. Scott Metzger is a very different kind of county commissioner candidate because he comes from the ranks of county management. Metzger, 56, of Montoursville, retired last year after 32 years at the county Adult Probation Office, including more than a decade as Deputy Adult Probation Officer. Born and raised in Lycoming County, Metzger graduated from West Chester University, and along with his

lovely wife Robin, returned to the area to raise his family of three children. He became active professionally in county work as well as co-owner of Metzger Executive Apartments. Somehow he still found time for involvement in an array of civic organizations. In the Adult Probation office, Metzger was exceptional in his field, which was recognized as he was one of eight officers in the commonwealth enlisted to develop reforms and improvements for parole officer training in Pennsylvania. He introduced “cognitive restructuring” counseling techniques to Lycoming County, an innovative approach to counseling offenders in ways to change behavior by changing outlook. The program was hailed as a success and introduced to the juvenile probation system as well.

LION

For those who have not committed a crime, Scott Metzger is best known in the community for his involvement with Little League Baseball. He has served as president of the Montoursville Little League Board for the past 16 years and is one of 32 Little League World Series “Team Hosts” who supervise and assist visiting players from around the world. Among Metzger’s accomplishments was the creation of a “Challenger Division” in Montoursville Little League to allow special needs children to play baseball throughout the summer. High school students volunteered to assist in the program, which included games at Lyter Field, adjacent to Mon-

toursville Elementary School. Metzger noted, “We had these children play under the lights. They loved that. They felt like superstars.” Besides Little League, Metzger also serves on the advisory board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the board of Wise Options for Women, a local domestic violence shelter. In 2002, the county presented him with the Lycoming County Humanitarian Award for his service overseeing a food drive for seven years. In 2006 he was presented with The Lycoming County Volunteer Award for his wide-ranging volunteer work in the community.

He intends to take all his business, government, and volunteer experience and pour it into solutions for the county’s key issues, which he believes are public safety, taxes, and job creation. Metzger sees these issues interrelated, and should initially be addressed by improving the communication and coordination between the courts, law enforcement, and the commissioners. “The answer to revenue problems isn’t to raise the tax rates — it’s to expand the tax base by encouraging businesses and industries to locate or expand here in Lycoming County,” Metzger said. “I plan to grow our region, not the tax rates in the county.” Scott Metzger worked for thirty-two years at a job most people would not have been able to handle for a week. He had to deal

with those on probation and those who had to supervise them, where even one mistake could be very costly. Yet Metzger did not operate in a maintenance mode, but toward innovative solutions. He used his “outside the box” type of thinking to make a difference in the Adult Probation Department. “I still encounter people who say our office changed their lives and made them better,” Metzger says. “If you change the way you think, you change the way you act.” It is this change in thinking that Metzger hopes to achieve, through better cooperation at all levels. The voters of Lycoming County will make the judgment if this new mindset might go a long way toward addressing the challenges that county faces.

Bike Won At Christmas Spectacular Helps 8-Year Old With Rehabilitation By Lou Hunsinger, Jr.

L

ast year was a tough year for eight-year-old Isaiah Grossnickle of the Cogan Station area. He was gravely ill and spent a period of time in a coma and is just now starting to get back on his feet. That tough year ended on a high note on December 8 when he won a bicycle at the “Skip Hunsinger Children’s Christmas Spectacular” held at the Community Arts Center and put on by

the CAC volunteer corps. Isaiah’s mother, Paula Grossnickle, tells how things began for her son. “It started in August when he became sick. He wasn’t eating or drinking and really dehydrated. I took him to Williamsport Hospital not once but twice and they sent him home both times saying it was the flu even though he was puking all the way through their hallways and rooms but they still didn’t admit him, they didn’t even run any test on him when I requested it,” Pau-

la told Webb Weekly. “Isaiah was even begging for IVs and said, “please help me, I want your help to make me better”, and they still didn’t even want to do anything (I did everything I could for him, I felt bad). The next morning he was barely responding, so my uncle George Lowmiller stopped in to check on Isaiah, Isaiah was barely responding when we tried to wake him up so then we rushed him back out to his pediatrician Dr. Mahmood and Dr. Theresa Moff on the other side of the Williamsport Hospital and as soon as we got there they sent him right downstairs to the emergency room, they called Life Flight in and meanwhile they were hooking him up to tubes and IVs, he also had a stroke on top of all that. Once he got to Geisinger Danville, he was in a coma for three or four days and come to find out he had two big size bladder masses. He couldn’t walk or talk when he came out of the coma. I taught him how to re-walk and talk again. My uncle, George not only saved Isaiah but also saved me three years ago when I was in a coma myself when I became really sick. Isaiah still has a long road ahead of him, but he’s doing better little by little.” She said that Isaiah was able to overcome all he has been through with a lot of support from doctors and family. “It meant so much to him to win the

bicycle knowing what he has been through,” Paula said. “I was thrilled that he won the bike. We go to the Spectacular every year, and this is the first year that he won. I was so happy and proud.” She said the bike aids greatly in Isaiah’s rehabilitation. It will help strengthen his legs and get him needed exercise. “We love the Christmas Spectacular. We go every year. I just think it’s so great to have something like this every year for the children,” Paula said. No doubt my Uncle Skip and the others who came up with the idea for the Spectacular and those who continue to keep it going would be pleased to have it produce such a good impact for a youngster like Isaiah.

Through Missionary Ventures we distributed bicycles, motorcycles, horses, boats, 3 horse & buggies, 2 snowmobiles, and 1 camel. Through Open Doors, 2.6 million Bibles, and via the Jesus Film Project over 119 million people have viewed the life of Christ in their own heart language. The results are phenomenal! If you are a biker, and a Christian, join us at our meeting and get acquainted with us. Game Day Eats and Treats

Score major points with delicious dishes

I

f the crew is coming over to root for your favorite team, it may be time to spice up the menu. Whether you’re hosting the weekend get-together or watching the game after work, switch up your typical spread and serve something new to leave your guests cheering for more. When it comes to choosing an ingredient that can lend a winning assist to nearly any dish and score you some major points, look no further than California Ripe Olives. Variety is key when mapping out food for a crowd, regardless of the event. Plan on serving one main course and two sides, and consider no-fuss options like chips and dips. If there are kids in attendance, make sure there is something neutral for even the pickiest eaters to snack on. However, try your best to avoid anything that needs a knife and fork to eat - finger foods typically work best when the game is on and conversation is flowing. $ The mild and unique taste of California ANY TWO Ripe Olives lends itself well to many ANY TWO DINNER different flavor pairings, such as these LUNCH WITH THE PURCHASE OF TWO BEVERAGES ENTREES recipes for Pulled Pork Sandwiches with ENTREES 5pm-Close Peach-Olive Jam, Easy Olive Bread and 11am-5pm Sun-Dried Tomato and Olive Tapenade. 1840 E. 3rd St., Williamsport WITH THE PURCHASE OF570.320.8443 TWO BEVERAGES Whether your guests are fans of spicy, 1840 EAST THIRD STREET • WILLIAMSPORT, PA • 570.320.8443 ~DISCOUNT APPLIES TO ITEM OF EQUAL OR LESSER VALUE~ Must present coupon at time of ordering. County Hall Corner Help With Housing You Can Bank On By Larry Stout

T

here are three essential needs in life — food, clothing, and shelter. Those with limited financial resources often must seek others for help to supply these necessities. Lycoming County has several thrift stores in the area with quite a variety of clothing items, and the food banks in each of the local communities dispense vitally needed healthy food products. There are also emergency shelters, such as those provided by the American Rescue Workers/ Saving Grace Shelter, which are incredibly important, especially in these winter months. But these are only meant to be temporary. The bigger problem is finding permanent affordable housing for those who need it. This area is much more complex than putting food on the table and clothes on the back. It was for this reason that the Lycoming County Supportive Housing Program (SHP) was developed. The Supportive Housing Program is a guided program designed to help local residents to stay in their current housing or find new housing, along with teaching them financial, life, and career skills. This is a multi-faceted measure that relies on outside agencies, and a key player on the financial side is Jersey Shore State Bank (JSSB).

The Supportive Housing Program is implemented through STEP, and Jersey Shore State Bank is well represented as Aron Carter, Senior Vice President of Enterprise Risk Management, is on the Board of Directors at STEP and Jill Morrissey, Community Reinvestment Act Officer, served on the SHP Advisory Committee. President Karen Young noted that JSSB was extremely pleased to be able to “help our friends at STEP.” She noted that JSSB, “has always been dedicated to the communities it serves and has a strong interest in promoting their financial well-being.” To that end, the bank has donated $50,000, which allowed the program to help even more clients than initially planned. Not unlike Muncy Bank and Trust Company that was featured in this column back in September of last year, Jersey Shore State Bank believes in giving

ate-income households the opportunity to purchase a single family primary home and finance up to 100% of the purchase price. HOMEstead loans are part of an FHA program that provides need-based borrowers up to $10,000 in down payment and closing cost assistance in the form of a no-interest, second mortgage loan. HOMEstead funds are forgiven at 20% per year over five years. JSSB is also a top lender for PHFA’s Keystone Advantage Assistance Loan Program. With the Keystone program, qualified borrowers are provided with a second mortgage loan to help with down payment and closing costs on the property. Eligible applicants can receive up to 4 percent of the purchase price or market value, or $6,000 in assistance

(whichever is less). Another local housing need that the bank is addressing is with the local non-profit agency Roads to Freedom and their proposed 24-unit special needs housing development. This special needs housing development will be the only one of its kind in the area that specifically addresses the unique housing requirements of those with disabilities. Jill Morrissey serves on their Board of Directors, and the bank has donated to the organization and sponsored their grant applications. The bank has also helped the local American Rescue Workers / Saving Grace Shelter with an employee-led clothing drive as well as financial contributions. Another recent community project by the bank is

helping with the new food bank program, Harvest of Hope, at Faith United Methodist Church. And if this was not enough, the bank also has an outreach to veterans as well. Last year, members of the JSSB Mortgage Services Team not only volunteered their time at the VFW Leroy O. Buck in Duboistown by helping to bag 59,000 pounds of food but also made a $1,000 contribution to help the efforts of the VFW Military Share Program. Given all this, it is not a surprise that Jersey Shore State Bank recently received an “Outstanding” rating from the FDIC for its Community Reinvestment Act outreach. They would be considered outstanding by any standard.

back to the communities it serves and also strongly encourages community involvement from the employees at JSSB. President Karen Young knows that being actively engaged and involved in the local communities gives them the opportunity to understand better the needs of the communities in which they serve. Young leads by example, as she has been involved and continues to serve as a board and committee member of many local organizations. There are many aspects to buying a home and JSSB makes it a special goal to help first-time homebuyers. In fact, JSSB ranks in the top five in the state for USDA loans and number one for HOMEstead loans. The USDA Single Family Housing Guaranteed Loan Program provides moder-

elcome to a new year — may it be the best one yet for you! If you made New Year’s resolutions may they succeed. During this time of resolutions and “makeovers” here are a few interesting, I hope, thoughts I would like to contribute. I remember making lists of resolutions when I was a child but only recall two now. One was washing the dishes for my mom every day for the year. I think that lasted one week. The other was after mom taught me how to play a few beginning songs on the piano that I was going to become the world’s best pianist. How did that turn out? Well, today, I can play/ fumble through some children’s songs for Sunday School. When I get lost the children just keep on singing anyway, thank goodness! If only “heaps” of motivation and willpower were necessary to make something succeed keeping resolutions and goals would be a slam dunk! When I was in my early 20s, I resolved to run a marathon “sometime soon.” I started running a few days a week after work along river paths in Fort Wayne, Indiana, past Johnny Appleseed’s gravesite, and other historical places. I started thinking I was getting good, really good, sort of like a Rocky Balboa triumphantly bouncing up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. I was getting to where I could “run” (“plod along” in hindsight) about eight miles. When I saw a notice for a first time annual 10K run in downtown Fort Wayne, not only was I going

to run in it but I was going to be the first winner since “someday” I was going to be a marathon runner, and 10K was just a warmup!! I had enough determination and will power to run the 10K twice before anyone made it around once! Race day arrived. The course map looked something like a lollipop with the straight part, Main St. and the bridge over the St. Joseph River, being the start and finish. The loop went through the Lakewood district. There were several hundred runners, and we took off. I was somewhere in the middle. My strategy was brilliant and foolproof, run a little faster than everyone else and finish first. This would be easy! I was even rehearsing my victory speech and reminding myself to “keep it simple and humble.” As I was crossing the bridge into the Lakewood loop, I was stunned to see runners heading back to the finish line, having completed the loop already! I was amazed that anyone could run that far so fast! My attitude switched from trying to “beat everyone” to just “being in it together” and running at a gradually decreasing speed to the finish. Later that summer my knees had enough of my “marathon madness” — end of story. I think my failed resolutions come from being overly ambitious and overestimating my God-given skills and talents. I believe that every one of us is born with a purpose, no one is a mistake. We are created with different aptitudes for various tasks and activities. Contributing to the wellbeing of others is a vital part of life. It’s amazing that Jesus, the

moment turns out to be wrong. Mistakes teach many things, but unfortunately, they are always emotionally and sometimes physically painful and always have a cost, some permanent. So, again, I resolve to slow down and think things through and to consult others when possible before making a final decision. I admit, this resolution is a “toughie” to keep. When we meet our Creator face to face, the only fact that will matter is our relationship with Him. We won’t be asked whether we kept our resolutions, or if we checked off all the items on our “bucket list.” God does have plans for every one of us. Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” What an amazing verse!

One resolution we can keep is to be a bit more kind and helpful to others, even if it is just a brief smile, a “Hi there,” or holding a door open. Another resolution that is relatively easy to keep is to read something Biblical each day. Why? Because: “Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path,” Psalm 119:105. I just checked, and there are at least ten sites on my phone for a verse of the day. It won’t take more than several seconds daily, but even one verse will change your day for the better. I concluded 2018 by making a big blunder, despite many times in the past vowing, “I’ll never do anything like that again.” At times, what seems to be the right choice at the

whether or not something “brought joy” to one’s life. “What do you mean ‘Does this bring me joy?’” he demanded to know as he held a bucket with no bottom in his hands. “I happen to like this bucket.” “It has no bottom,” I reminded him. “I don’t care,” he defended. In hindsight, maybe I should have requested that a marriage counselor be included with the dumpster rental. Judging by our impassioned exchanges, I’m guessing a lot of couples would be interested in such a convenient arrangement. Better still, a copy of Marie Kondo’s Spark Joy could be presented to help the utterly hopeless. Although we still have a lot of stuff to purge after filling an entire dumpster to the brim and it took two people with master’s degrees to open it, on the bright side, we found a buyer for my husband’s vintage (old-as-dirt) Schwinn bicycle and classic toy trucks. What’s more, we unearthed some marbles while sorting through a hodgepodge of items. It’s good to know we still have some. There was a gas grill, an office chair, three sets of antiquated golf clubs and a bug collecting kit of undetermined origin. Of course, there were still bugs inside it—dead as ever. Even my dust-covered treadmill found its way there, despite the challenge of dragging it all the way through the house and garage. At least we got some exercise in the process. Even our neighbors got in on the fun when I gave them the go-ahead to deposit their gargantuan television set inside. I only wish I had witnessed its arrival. Instead I had to hear about several family members pushing and/ or “riding” their 72” TV down the street and up our driveway. I can only imagine what it must have been like to then lift the stupid thing into the dumpster. Hopefully, no one got a hernia. As one might expect, my hoard-happy husband and I had several heated debates while we attempted to clean out our garage—most of which involved dumpster diving (his) and emphatic arguments (mine) over the issue of

have been receiving more reports of sportsmen finding recently shed antlers. It seems that the bucks are dropping antlers a bit earlier than normal for some reason. While we seem to be in the throes of winter, there are the occasional warmer days that entice us to spend some time outdoors – doing something other than chipping ice or shoveling snow! We can get outside to enjoy some hiking and breathing fresh air again! Something you should consider on the nicer weather days is the popular activity of hunting for shed antlers. More is being written all the time about this “sport,” and shed antler hunting allows for some great exercise and the chance to learn more about the wildlife in your area. What better way to find out if that big buck you saw last fall actually made it through the hunting season and survived the harsh winter? Finding his sheds will allow you to begin focusing on pursuing him again this coming season. Many shed hunters enjoy simply piling up a stack of sheds, while other folks use them in a variety of ways in craft and art projects. Whatever

your reason, let’s look at some ways that may help you be more successful in your pursuit. Head South: That is to say, focus your attention on the south-facing hillsides. Throughout the winter months and into early spring, deer will frequently bed and travel for food on a hillside with a southern exposure so they can take advantage of the early morning warmth of the sunshine. Whatever food is available becomes more easily located on these benches and slopes that are warmed by the morning sun. Since the deer frequently concentrate their time here, there is a good chance more sheds will be found here than in areas that face north and may still have some degree of snow cover. Jump for Joy!: Walking along deer trails, rather than just zigzagging haphazardly through the woods will greatly increase the likelihood of locating dropped antlers. Be particularly alert near areas where a trail crosses a fence line, creek bank or steep ditch. As a buck jumps to navigate these spots, there is a greater chance for one or both of his antlers being jarred loose. Think Small: As you move along your

and scouring nearby hillsides. Take Your “Buddy” With You: Here, I am not talking about your two-legged hunting buddy, but instead, your fourlegged hunting companion! More and more shed hunters are training dogs to accompany them in their search. There is even a website, www.sheddogtrainer. com, which can help you with your task of training a dog. In the end, with a dog, you will greatly expand your coverage area, and you will both enjoy the exercise you and your pooch will be getting. Scouting for Coyotes: Hunters are always looking for any way to get a “leg up” on hunting for coyotes. Now, as you travel the trails and woods in pursuit of shed antlers, be watchful for any sign of coyote activity – scat or tracks in particular. Generally speaking, it is from mid-January to mid-March that these critters are traveling more than normal since it is their mating season. If you are lucky enough to spot signs of recent activity, returning to this area to call for coyotes could prove to be more productive than later in the spring. For whatever reason you decide to engage in the sport, it will provide a great opportunity to get out, get some exercise and add another element of the joy supplied by our Great Outdoors!

route, don’t be focused on sighting a large antler from a huge 12-pointer, but instead, be looking for a drop from a spike buck or a young 4-point deer. If you are seeking a large, heavy antler, you will overlook the smaller ones. If you think small, you will greatly increase your number of “finds.” Don’t always expect to see a whole shed antler lying completely out in the open, but instead, be watchful for a portion of the antler, or just a tip of a point that may be sticking up. Plan Out a Route: Develop a route that incorporates deer trails wherever possible and runs between bedding and feeding areas. Spend extra time in the bedding and feeding areas, as these locations will reveal more sheds. Have confidence in the route you have selected, and on the next outing, travel it in the opposite direction. Sometimes, you will spot an object merely because you are looking for it from a different angle. Seeing is Believing: You will multiply your chances greatly by using binoculars to help spot dropped antlers. It is pretty amazing how a dropped antler laying on the forest floor can be so easily spotted with the use of a good pair of binoculars. You end up widening your search area many-fold by just stopping periodically

s many of my readers probably already know I am also a wildlife artist and illustrator. As a wildlife artist, I have painted and sketched quite a variety of critters like our commonly seen deer, turkeys, bears, and songbirds. My wildlife art has taken me to some interesting, maybe even strange places like black bear dens and diving with manatees in Florida and even into the depths of Loch Ness in Scotland. More recently however I have been charged with producing a painting of a little brown bat for an upcoming cover of Game News Magazine-a first for me, and the first time a bat will ever grace the cover of Game News. Why a bat? Well, as many of you already know bats are in a serious

decline in our state. Yes, I’m aware that bats are not exactly cherished by many and detested by others. Remember however that while you may not enjoy bats swooping near your head while sitting around Ken Hunter the campfire, they do indeed consume large numbers of insects; that includes mosquitoes by the way. If you tried to enjoy camping along the river this past summer you know what I mean — the mosquitoes were having a hay day gorging on us human smorgasbords. While the lack of bats may have contributed to the “mosquito epidemic” it’s probably also true that frequent rains and flooding also contributed to the unusually high numbers of mosquitoes. Truth is, bats are a resource that needs and deserves our protection. There are three species of bats in

THREE ESSENTIAL DOCUMENTS TO RING IN THE NEW YEAR Every year we make resolutions and promise we’ll get things in order. This is also a good time to make sure your documents meet your needs. Your Will is the basic estate planning document in which you name an executor who will settle your estate and in which you set forth how your estate will be distributed. Your Will may contain one or more trusts for the benefit of spouse, children, grandchildren or others. A bypass clause is especially important to protect against your estate passing to an institutionalized spouse. Most Wills do not have a bypass clause and that can be a grievous and expensive omission. Your Power-of-Attorney names someone to do your business for you if you are unable to do so. A well-drafted durable POA is imperative if you become a resident of a nursing home. Your Living Will states your preference as to whether or not you want extraordinary life-prolonging measures. With these three essential documents professionally prepared by attorneys experienced and knowledgeable in the issues facing older generations you can feel reasonably assured that you have in place the tools you will need to face the new year. We will review your essential documents for free to determine if they meet your needs.

From all of us at Greevy & Shoemaker, best wishes for a Healthy and Happy New Year!

commission and other agencies may have a say as to whether a project can go forward. The commission is again looking at moving towards greater protection for the declining bats but with some limitations. The Game Commission would like to focus on places where they know bats still occur such as bat roosts, hibernacula or capture locations; commercial activity would be limited within certain distances of such locations. Even if the new protection goes into action, it would likely be some time before we see an increase in the bat population. We’ll have to wait and see where all of this goes so in the meantime enjoy the campfire but don’t forget the mosquito repellent. Oh yea, if any of you guys are looking for a great Christmas gift for your wife next year how about a painting of a brown bat- she will love it and it would look great on the livingroom wall.

Pennsylvania that are in serious trouble and may be getting some new protection. Populations of these species have declined by nearly 99 percent since 2008 with the little brown bat suffering the most. The problem, of course, is a condition known as white-nose syndrome; a fungal disease that interrupts the bat’s hibernation causing them to wake-up and burn more fat reserves too fast and ultimately leads to their death. Because of the severity of the situation, the Game Commission is seeking to place the bats into the into the most protected status of endangered. OK, so what’s the big deal? When a species falls into a highly protected status, certain activities are limited where the bats occur. In 2012 such an effort died when the timber, oil, gas and coal industries pressured the commission not to take action. If it looks like an industry may impact a protected species adversely the

overtime game in 1974, the NFL has had 574 overtime games. During that time more than 25% of the teams that lost the coin toss never touched the ball. Since 1994, the team that won the overtime coin toss has won the game 34.4% of the time on the first possession. There’s got to be a better way. There is, and despite their many administrative flaws the NCAA’s overtime rule provides true competitive balance and is a lot more fun to watch. College football’s overtime rules give each team a possession at the defense’s 25-yard line. Play commences using normal game rules. Play continues with alternate possessions until a winner can be determined. Starting with a third extra period teams must go for a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. It’s a pretty simple, clear-cut and an extremely fair way to determine a winner. I don’t expect it to happen, but maybe the NFL should go to a class studying the college rule. Because of the proficiency of its placekickers perhaps the NFL could modify the college rule by beginning the alternate possessions at the 50-yard line, or even place the ball at the offensive teams own 25-yard line as they do now when kickoffs reach the end zone. With so much at stake in the professional game, it’s time for a change in the overtime rules. Reducing what are competitive games tied at the end of regulation play to a game of chance determined by a ‘coin flip’ is a pretty silly way to operate a multibillion dollar business.

the determining factor in New England’s exciting 37-31 overtime win over the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC title game. Love em’ or hate em’, you’ve got to give Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and company credit as they will be making their third trip in four years to the Super Bowl seeking their sixth title in the big game. They played the game under the established NFL rules and correctly called ‘heads’ as the teams prepared to head into overtime with the game tied at 31-31. They received the kickoff and marched right down the field for the winning touchdown, and all the Chiefs offense could do was watch from the sideline. After six months of sweat and toil, 16 regular season games and playoff victories the NFL is still reverting to ‘flipping a coin’ in the game leading to the Super Bowl. The Patriots are a very good football team. They are also adept at calling coin tosses. While they don’t always win the toss, they always call heads as they did leading to their victory over the Chiefs. But ‘flipping a coin’ may not be the fairest way to settle a dispute. About a decade ago statistician Persi Diaconis wondered if the outcome of a coin flip is really a matter of chance. He had Harvard University engineers build him a mechanical coin flipper. Using the device, his studies found that if a coin is launched exactly the same way, it lands exactly the same way. If a coin starts out heads, it ends up heads more often than not. Since adopting the coin toss in an

Five Steps for Game Day Party Success

W

hether you have been planning for months or you’re inviting guests the day of, hosting a huge crowd on game day requires a bit more than RSVPs and a welcoming setting. Whether a “huge crowd” to you means five guests or 50, starting out with a plan can help make the day more enjoyable for everyone. To help make your game day soirée a success, knowing which snacks are top picks for the event might make shopping a little easier. The experts at Frito-Lay North America conducted the inaugural U.S. Snack Index - a poll that surveyed Americans for insights on which snacks rose to the top for consumers this year - to share what guests want on game day. Get Organized From Guests to Groceries From sending invites to selecting

the snacks you’ll serve, start by organizing your thoughts and writing down the details. For starters, create a guest list so you’ll know exactly how much food and drink you’ll need to buy and map out your grocery list for a stressfree trip to the store. Game Day Setup A picture is worth a thousand words, and you can rest assured many game day viewers will plan to share images of their spreads on social media. To make sure your game day setup is ready for primetime, start by decluttering your space, arranging furniture for ample seating and laying out

Snacks for All While it may be first instinct to feel like you need to cook crafty dishes and artsy snacks, that may not necessarily be important to game day guests. In fact, according to the index, nearly all game day partygoers will enjoy snacks during the competition, and 80 percent

of viewers said they’ll eat either potato or tortilla chips. Chips aren’t the only thing to consider. Score big with your guests by picking the perfect pairings, like salsa for tortilla chips, which ranks as the most popular dip overall, or French onion dip, which is the most popular choice for dipping potato chips. Encourage Fun for Everyone Of course, the game is the reason for the party and the center of

MURRAY

attention, but the fact is it’s possible not every person in attendance is a sports fan. By bringing out board games or cards and setting up tables in adjacent rooms, you can encourage a fun environment for everyone at the party. Plus, by creating a secondary station away from the TV, you’ll allow for non-sports conversation without upsetting the diehards. Keep it Simple Generally, game day watch parties

are of the more laid-back variety. This no-fuss attitude carries over into party snack prep, as more than half of viewers surveyed in the U.S. Snack Index prefer to prepare simple recipes whether they’re hosting or attending. On top of laid-back snacks, more than one-third of consumers polled plan to simply put snacks in the closest bowl rather than planning out a social media-worthy snack table. More Than 90 Hall of Famers Have Appeared In Williamsport As Either Active Players Or Visitors By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he recent election of Montoursville’s Mike Mussina to the National Baseball Hall of Fame has lifted him to the stratosphere of baseball immortality. The Williamsport area is no stranger to playing host to baseball immortals, over the past 140 years Williamsport has hosted 92 members of the Baseball Hall of Fame as either active players on their way up through the minor leagues, as active major leaguers participating in exhibition or barnstorming games here, or as visitors to events such as baseball banquets, the Grand Slam Parade or Williamsport Welcomes the World. John Montgomery Ward, a 1964 inductee, played his professional baseball here in the late 1870s. Rube Waddell, flamboyant Philadelphia A’s pitcher of the early 1900s, played in exhibition games here in the period 1904 to 1906. Negro League founder and pitching standout “Rube” Foster, Pete Hill and, great infielder and also early black baseball historian, Sol White, all played here with the Philadelphia Giants in games between 1903 and 1907. Stan Covaleski, from nearby Shamokin, played against Williamsport as a member of the Lancaster team of the Tri-State League in 1909 and 1910. When the Pittsburgh Pirates played the Williamsport Grays in exhibition games against

the Williamsport Grays in 1923 and 1924, Pie Traynor, Paul, and Lloyd Waner played for the Buccos. Hall of Fame Pirate owner Barney Dreyfuss was in attendance as well. Several Cooperstown bound Philadelphia A’s players for Connie Mack’s dynasty of 1929-1931 saw action at Bowman Field in exhibition games at Bowman Field, such as Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, Mickey Cochrane, and Eddie Collins, and the team was managed of course by baseball’s “grand old man” himself, Connie Mack. Earl Averill of the Cleveland Indians saw action here in an exhibition game in 1932, and Chick Hafey played in an exhibition game with the Cincinnati Reds in 1934. Players playing against the Williamsport Grays during the 1930s and 1940s include Johnny Mize, Billy Southworth, Enos Slaughter and Rabbit Maranville for Elmira, Lefty Gomez for Binghamton, Ralph Kiner, who played for Albany in 1941. Also in 1941 was Bob Lemon of the Wilkes-Barre Barons and Early Wynn of Springfield. Warren Spahn saw action with Hartford in 1942, Richie Ashburn for Utica in 1945 and 1947, Whitey Ford for Binghamton in 1949. In later years, Juan Marichal saw action here with the Springfield Giants in 1959, Andre Dawson with the Three Rivers team in 1976, John Smoltz, the London Tigers in 1987, Ken Griffey, Jr. with Vermont in 1988, Jeff Bag-

well with the New Britain Red Sox and Jim Thome with the Canton-Akron Indians in 1991. Two Hall of Fame umpires called balls and strikes at Bowman Field during the late 30s and early 40s, Al Barlick and Jocko Conlan. Some fine Negro League Hall of Famers saw action at the uptown ballpark including, Josh Gibson, Satchel Paige, Buck Leonard, Leon Day, Mule Suttles, Monte Irvin, Ray Dandridge, Jud Wilson, Larry Doby, and Oscar Charleston. George Kell appeared with the Detroit Tigers in an exhibition game at Bowman Field in 1946. Several Williamsport players went on to the Hall of Fame including pitcher Jim Bunning, who pitched for the Williamsport Tigers in 1952, Bill Mazeroski, who played for the Grays in 1954 and 1955, Nolan Ryan pitched for two weeks for the 1966 Williamsport Mets and Jim Rice for the Williamsport Red Sox in 1971. Ferguson Jenkins was on the opening day roster for the 1962 Williamsport Grays and was slated to pitch here, but at the last minute, he was shifted to Miami. He would eventually come to Williamsport in 2001 to participate in the Little League Golf Tournament, also participating in that year’s tournament was Minnesota Twins Hall of Famer, Harmon Killebrew. Robin Roberts pitched in 1967 for the Reading Phillies against the Williamsport Mets at Bowman Field and lost a tough 1-0 decision. He was attempting a comeback. Bob Feller made a public relations appearance at Bowman Field for the Cleveland Indians in 1976 when the Williamsport Tomahawks were an Indian farm club. During the early 1980s, Brooks Robinson

and Willie Stargell made public relations appearances at some area sporting goods stores. Several Hall of Famers spoke at winter baseball banquets here in the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. They were Baseball Commissioner Albert “Happy” Chandler, A’s great pitcher, “Chief ” Bender, the legendary Branch Rickey, the colorful Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, Warren Spahn, Mets General Manager, George Weiss and when the Phillies Caravan came here, Mike Schmidt made an appearance, along with the controversial Pete Rose. Pat Gillick, former General Manager of the Mariners, Blue Jays, and Phillies, made appearances at the Crosscutters Hot Stove League Banquet in 2007 and 2016. A number of baseball immortals have appeared in conjunction with the Little League World Series, including Cy Young, Jackie Robinson, Joe DiMaggio, Ted Williams, Mickey Mantle, Jim Palmer, Earl Weaver, Bowie Kuhn, Gary Carter, Tony Gwynn, Dave Winfield, Joe Torre, Joe Morgan, Tom Seaver and two of the newest inductees, Mariano Rivera and of course, Mike Mussina. The Grand Slam Parade and Williamsport Welcomes the World has brought Lou Brock, Carlton Fisk, Steve Carlton, Ivan Rodriguez, Gaylord Perry, Paul Molitor, Robin Yount, Reggie Jackson, Vladimir Guerrero, Frank Thomas, Rollie Fingers, Johnny Bench, Andre Dawson, Jim Rice, Rod Carew, Dennis Eckersley, Eddie Murray, Ozzie Smith, Goose Gossage and Wade Boggs. This, to the best of my knowledge, is the list of the Hall of Famers who have been here over the years; it is possible that I might have missed one or two.
