Mike Is Who He Is All the Way to Cooperstown

T

ip of my Loyalsock Lancer cap to cross-creek rival Mike Mussina. His election into the Baseball Hall of Fame is a celebration of a good man doing great things the right way, and being rewarded with baseball immortality. Mike’s priorities have always been in the right order, although sometimes, big city people and sportswriters didn’t understand. He loves his family, his hometown, privacy, and athletic competition. So before we get to some of his Hall of Fame numbers here are some things that are a little less known about Mike. First up, he’s a tremendous athlete. Definitely not a PO-pitcher only in the baseball terminology of today. On the baseball diamond, if he had chosen to be a position player and step into the batter’s box, he would have been very good. However, it was obvious from an early age he had a future as a pitcher On the football field, he could compete with the best of them. He was an outstanding receiver. One thing that separated him from others was an unbelievable ability to kick the football. If it wasn’t for that baseball thing, he could have pursued this in college and possibly beyond. Mike’s favorite sport growing up was basketball. His athletic ability was suited for the game. He was a stellar offensive and defensive performer. I’m sure he would have loved to play college basketball; however, he was just a much better baseball player. I knew when Mike was hired as the head basketball coach for Montoursville he would turn the program around and return the Warriors to their glory days of the past.

Mike is flat-out one of the smartest people I have ever met. He could have been a doctor, rocket scientist or accountant — whatever he chose he would have excelled at. He graduated from Stanford with two degrees, one of which is in economics that he has definitely put to good use. Everything with Mike is thought out, calculated and then executed with 100% commitment. He is able to strategically accomplish his goal without allowing emotions to become part of the equation. You could never tell from his reaction whether the batter had struck out or hit a home run. This is what made him a cold-blooded assassin on the pitching mound. His enshrinement in Cooperstown was made possible by him harnessing that great mind, great arm, and understanding how they work together. He became a better pitcher the longer his career went on winning 20 games his final season. To this day, I don’t believe any of the Major League experts have figured out how many different pitches he threw. This was created by cerebral Mike’s ability to simply tweak how he held the ball or make a subtle change in velocity. He was able to create a finished product that had his mind and body in harmony. Then execute it in front of 50,000 screaming fans while the guy standing at the plate wanted to knock the ball back up the middle and spin his hat around. Mike has a good sense of humor. Yes, it may be a little dry, but it’s quick, witty and funny. He enjoys ribbing people in his own special way.

I’ve always respected how Mike approached the media during his professional baseball career. The big city folks didn’t always understand, but simply put, he wasn’t there to make friends, have fun or give you a sound bite. He was going to work to do his job. He was going Jim to give you his best effort, Webb, Jr. and expected to be judged and paid for his productivity. He wanted nothing to do with all the other glitz and glamour that surrounds the game. He didn’t want the big commercial endorsement deals; he didn’t want to be the face of anything. He wanted to work on being the best pitcher, pitch the best game possible, and just be who he is. At the end of his career he had honed his talents into his first 20-win season. Mike could have parlayed that into a big fat paycheck the following year with the Yankees and added a few more wins to his Hall of Fame resume. But there were more important things for him back at home. Family — young children that needed their dad for many reasons. It was time to go home to move onto bigger and better things. Mike did the unthinkable to so many professional athletes and members of the media and hung up the cleats. He dedicated himself to his family and giving back to the community. There was never a doubt or question about Mike doing things the right way during his baseball career, which just happened to coincide with the steroid era. A time when many players took performance-enhancing drugs and cheated the game of baseball. Mike pitched against these players, usually getting them out, and also played with

some of these players. Baseball fans know all their names so I will stop here. However, I do want to mention the Red Sox David Ortiz who tested positive for PEDs. He hated batting against Mike. He was 0-20 before he recorded his first hit off of him. Mike was by the book even when many in the game were not. That is a reason why his Hall of Fame induction should have come sooner. Reward the good guy – the gentlemen that did things the right way. His numbers were definitely deserving of the honor. OK, I know Mike would tell you I’ve written way too much. So I’ll finish up with some numbers. Mike on the Mound: 18 seasons – 270 wins – 153 losses for a winning percentage of .638. He was a five-time All-Star. He showed his athleticism by winning seven Golden Gloves. He holds the American League record for winning 11 games or more in 17 consecutive seasons. He recorded 2,813 strikeouts, ranking him 19th on the all-time list. For you modern-day number crunchers, he is 23rd all-time in wins above replacement by a pitcher, 82.9. Mike and Sandy Koufax are the only pitchers in the history of the game to retire after posting a 20-win season. He pitched 4 one-hit shutouts in his career. Twice the one hit was the only blemish from perfection. He is the only Stanford Cardinal to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Mike spent 10 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and 8 seasons with the New York Yankees. He has chosen to respectively represent both teams during his induction. On the Walls of Fame in Cooperstown, his plaque will appear with no logo on his hat, which is so true to who Mike is. I would like to see that Montoursville M on his hat, I think that would be just perfect. God Bless America.

Valentine’s Dinner Prep

I

was going to wait until next week to talk about Valentine’s Day, but I figured I would start this week so that you don’t have an excuse to wait until the last minute to plan something special for that someone special. With Valentine’s falling on a Thursday this year, restaurants are bound to be packed all weekend long. If you are looking for a romantic alternative, consider staying in and cooking a nice meal at home. Get you some flowers, candles, wine, and 90’s R&B and prepare to wow your sweetie with a beautiful home cooked meal. Now because I like y’all, I’ve put together a recipe for you that isn’t super complicated, but will make for a lovely night in. Steakhouse Sheet Pan Dinner for Two Ingredients: • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted, plus more for greasing the sheet pan • 4 tail-on jumbo shrimp, peeled and deveined • 2 teaspoons fresh thyme leaves • 3 small cloves garlic, minced • Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan • 2/3 cup heavy cream • 1 pound Yukon gold potatoes (about 6), sliced into 1/8-inch rounds • 2 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature

• One 10-ounce package frozen spinach, thawed and squeezed completely dry • 2/3 cup shredded Gruyere (about 5 ounces) Steph Nordstrom • Two 8-ounce New York strip steaks (1 to 1 1/2 inches thick) Directions: Special equipment: • two 4-ounce ramekins Position an oven rack in the top third of the oven and preheat to 450 degrees F. Lightly grease a third of an 18-by-13-inch sheet pan with butter. Toss the shrimp with the melted butter, 1 teaspoon thyme, a third of the minced garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of black pepper in a medium bowl until well coated; set aside. Mix the Parmesan, 1/3 cup heavy cream, remaining 1 teaspoon thyme, half the remaining garlic, 1/2 teaspoon salt and a few grinds of black pepper in a small bowl. Arrange half of the potato slices in a single, overlapping layer on the buttered part of the sheet pan and pour the heavy cream mixture over the top. Top with the remaining potato slices. Cover the potatoes with foil and bake until tender when pierced with a fork, 15 to 17 minutes.

Whisk together the cream cheese, remaining 1/3 cup heavy cream and remaining garlic in a medium bowl until smooth. Fold in the spinach until well coated. Divide the mixture between two 4-inch ramekins and press the spinach down so that it is flat and the cream mixture is pooling a bit on top. Remove the pan from the oven, remove the foil and sprinkle the potatoes with the Gruyere. Put the steaks down the middle of the pan and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Put the ramekins on one end of the empty third of the pan so that they are side by side. Bake until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the middle of the steak registers 95 degrees F, 12 to 14 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and turn on the broiler. Create 2 hearts with the shrimp on the pan beside the ramekins by connecting the tails. Broil until the steaks start to turn brown in some spots, an instant-read thermometer inserted into the middle of the steak reaches 115 degrees F, the shrimp are cooked through and no longer opaque and the cheese on the potatoes turns golden and starts to crisp, 3 to 4 minutes. Let rest 5 to 10 minutes. Slice and serve the steak on plates alongside the shrimp, potatoes and creamed spinach. I was going to give you a dessert recipe too, but the dinner took up a lot of my space. But you know what? We have a lot of amazing places around town that you can grab dessert from. Or maybe, you can compromise on going out and head out after dinner for a Valentine’s cocktail or dessert.

Mike Mussina’s Overlooked Distinguished Collegiate Baseball Career By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

ike Mussina’s Hall of Fame Major League baseball career is rightly being celebrated and noted by avid observers of the game. However, one important aspect of his distinguished baseball journey is being mostly overlooked, and that is his collegiate baseball feats with the Stanford Cardinal baseball team from 1987 to 1990. He excelled there in one of the most storied baseball programs at the collegiate level. To prosper at such a program speaks volumes about his pitching prowess. Mussina is considered one of the most dominant pitchers in Stanford history. From 1987 to 1990 he was a stellar pitcher for the Cardinals. In 1987, he was part of one of the most potent one-two punch pitching combinations any collegiate club could claim when he, along with future Cy Young winner, Jack McDowell, anchored the Stanford pitching staff

that helped them win the College World Series. It seemed that McDowell would be the more celebrated and proficient as a major leaguer than Mussina when McDowell won the Cy Young Award in 1993 while pitching for the Chicago White Sox and winning 20 games two times. It seemed that he would be the one that would go on to the Hall of Fame rather than Mussina, but McDowell’s arm flamed out after eight seasons. It almost seems natural that Mussina would have attended an academic powerhouse such as Stanford. He has earned the reputation as a cerebral and intellectually curious pitcher and person. He would analyze batters, trying to gauge their weaknesses and strengths. He would use his guile sometimes rather than his speed to retire an opposing batter. It was this analytical approach rather than just trying to overpower an opponent that probably helped preserve his arm and enabled to pitch for 18 major league

In 2015 Mussina was honored with the NCAA’s “Silver Anniversary Award.” The award annually recognizes distinguished individuals on the 25th anniversary of the end of their collegiate athletic careers. Representatives of NCAA member schools and conferences, along with a panel of distinguished former student-athletes, select each year’s recipients. After his stellar career at Stanford, he was drafted Number One by the Baltimore Orioles in the 1990 Amateur Baseball Draft. He signed with the Orioles and was assigned to their Double-A Eastern League Club, the Hagerstown Suns. Interestingly, he made his professional baseball debut for the Suns here at Bowman Field — a field he knew very well — against the Williamsport Bills, on July 14, 1990. Disappointedly, the game was washed out after just two innings, and he would have to make his real professional debut away from here and his hometown fans. It was not long before he was on his way to “The Show” and baseball immortality, but Stanford was a good and useful proving ground to hone his pitching craft.

seasons. He majored in Economics at Stanford and for his senior thesis wrote a paper, according to Sports Illustrated titled, “The Economics of Signing out of High School as Opposed to College.” He wrote it in one night and received a B+. Some experts regard Mussina as one of the most dominant pitchers in the history of the Stanford baseball program. During his tenure at Stanford, he compiled a 25-12 mark in 40 games. In 1988, he earned All-American honors during Stanford’s national championship season, compiling a 9-4 record with a 4.44 Earned Run Average in 21 games. During his junior year in 1990, he had a 14-5 record to go along with a 3.50 E.R.A. His excellence as a collegian prompted him to be named to the Pacific 12 All-Century Team. In a quote from Stanford Magazine Tom Dunton, his pitching coach at the time said, “Working with him (Mussina) was like working on a Ferrari.” He took a regular spot in the rotation — a rarity for a freshman.

anpower shortages in the municipal fire department and of coordination to affect a 24-hour a day ambulance service for local residents were cited as factors for insufficient aid in getting fire and accident victims to the Williamsport Hospital immediately after a disaster, it was stated here yesterday. The statement was made by Phillip Shay, director of public safety, as sentiment mounted over delay in getting the Grand Street fire victims to the hospital early Sunday. Answering the charges on behalf of the city, which maintains the public service as an added responsibility of the fire department, Shay pointed out the ambulance is not operated on a 24hour basis because of the lack of men to operate it. He said emergency calls are answered as soon as they are received at fire headquarters. In the recent tragedy the department received the alarm and several compa-

nies answered it immediately. Shortly after their arrival, firemen gave artificial respiration to the victims and meanwhile sent a call for ambulance service. Newberry residents based protests on the fact that it took 50 minutes for the ambulance to reach the scene. Mr. Shay continued that since the local police discontinued the ambulance service that began with presentation of the $15,000 community ambulance by the Kiwanis Club, the fire department took it over and has maintained it along with regular protection duties. With a complement of 54 men, the department is still short five men needed to ensure full fire protection in a city of this size, Mr. Shay said. He emphasized that national underwriters association has urged Williamsport to increase its force to number more than 100. Asked whether a 24-hour a day service could be established here, Mr. Shay said provisions of the 1946 budget eliminated creation of any new division. Cost of such a bureau is estimated at $10,000 annually.

Chica is a very social dog and loves to be around people and spend time with them. She thrives on human companionship. She did well with her handling test, and she was soon ready to run and play, and become the life of the party. When she plays she is very gentle with people and seems to understand how to play with only light jumping and chasing at this time. She loves toys of all kinds and likes to play keep away.

Elijah has a very laid-back personality, and he is normally snoozing away out in his kennel. When we go to get him out it takes him a moment to get his stretching out and to get up off his bed. Once out and we are walking through the kennel he tends to lag behind you, and he needs some encouragement to get his motor running. Even then he has his head to the floor and his nose glued to the ground.

arents and families today face an increasing and more complex variety of problems and meeting these challenges can be quite daunting. There is a program that can help meet these challenges that is called “Strengthening Families Program 10-14.” SFP is a parent, youth, and family skills-building curriculum designed to: * Strengthen parenting skills * Build family strengths * Prevent teen substance abuse and other behavior problems The program is fun and interactive. It includes activities such as role-plays, videos, games, and family projects. The program is for families who have children between the ages of 10-14. Childcare is provided on site for younger siblings. Dinner is served at each session and all families who participate receive a $100 gift card upon completion of the program. The program takes place at the Williamsport Area Middle School starting February 28 and will run every Thursday evening for seven sessions with graduation night, April 11. The families arrive at 5:30 p.m. and eat dinner together until 6. Then they separate and attend the parent or youth session for an hour and then the final hour is spent together for the family session, which concludes at 8 p.m. Danielle Hardy of the West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission helps to coordinate this interesting and innovative program. “We have a wonderful group of dedicated fa-

cilitators who really care about our families and helping them with their daily struggles as well as celebrating their accomplishments,” Hardy told “Webb Weekly.” “It is a pretty neat experience to watch how the families grow stronger during the seven-week program.” She said the activities taught in the program help with communication skills, setting rules and limits, and peer pressure refusal skills. All of these skills will help decrease the likelihood of a child using a substance. The families also participate in a family dinner each night at the middle school to start the sessions. This is another way a parent can increase the protection of a child from substance use. Families who eat dinner together can ask their child how their day was, who their friends are, how school was, etc. This helps form a bond with their child and a way of checking in on them. One area parent who had been involved in the program stated, “The Strengthening Families Program helps with strategies and ways to handle difficult situations. I enjoyed the ease of the environment; everyone was very helpful and friendly.” An area student familiar with the program said, “The Strengthening Families program is a lot of fun, and you can learn a lot. The Strengthening Families Program is helpful for making families stronger than they were before.” If you wish to participate in this program, you can contact Danielle Hardy at the West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission at 213 West Fourth Street, and her phone number is 570-323-8543, Extension 114. old weather comes with winters in Pennsylvania. It’s important to remember that a little preparation and allowing for extra time can go a long way to keep you safe when traveling this winter. Severe weather can be both frightening and dangerous for drivers. When it comes to safely traveling in any type of winter weather it’s important for travelers to consider a few things. Check the weather and prepare for the conditions. Taking this time to have a travel plan including weather can often help you avoid having to deal with unexpected weather conditions. If severe weather is in the forecast, consider the risk and need to travel. Avoid driving while you’re fatigued. Getting the proper amount of rest before taking on winter weather tasks reduces driving risks. It can be challenging enough to navigate safely in unpleasant weather, try not to add unnecessary risk. Prepare your vehicle. Make certain your

tires are properly inflated and when necessary have your vehicle equipped with special winter tires designed to help aid with traction in winter conditions. Keep your gas tank at least half full. Although you may have planned for gas stops along your route, weather conditions may cause you to alter your route, burn fuel faster than expected, or even cause extended delays. If the weather is severe enough, some gas stations may close. It’s safer to plan ahead while you can. Dress appropriately in case you need to get out of the vehicle. When you’re outdoors layering is your best protection from the cold weather. While it’s important to stay warm, you don’t want to dress too warmly. Too many layers can cause your body to sweat, as it thinks that it’s warmer than it is. When you begin to perspire in cold temperatures, the sweat can then begin to evaporate, causing your body to lose heat faster than it can produce it. Also, be sure to have proper footwear available in your vehicle. No matter how severe the conditions, here’s a few best practices to consider: Clear your car of all snow/ice prior to

of your vehicle to avoid freezing. Stay alert. Resist distractions like the radio, eating, or answering your phone while traveling. Most importantly, no matter the conditions, always wear your seat belt. Winter road trips – even short ones – are a great way to spend time with family and friends, and winter offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor recreation and fun. Just be sure to plan ahead to ensure a safe and happy time is had by all. Annalisa Negrea is a registered nurse and injury prevention coordinator with UPMC Susquehanna’s Trauma Program.

This Week’s LION The Private Public Servant - Tom Marino By Larry Stout

T

om Marino, U.S. Representative of the 12th Congressional District of Pennsylvania, officially resigned from Congress on January 23, 2019. His formal press release did not explain this action, although in a later statement he commented that he was taking a job in the public sector. Given the current political climate, I can say with full assurance that if the reason for his resignation was anything related to something illegal, unethical, or immor-

al — we would have heard of it from the scandal mongers by now. The absence of any substance and not just empty speculation along those lines would lead me to believe that his reason for resigning so soon after his recent election means that there was something very wrong that is very personal. The fact that Tom Marino does not wish to share this information fits his entire tenure in public office. Almost all politicians, especially those in public office at a state and national level, are generally gre-

garious, outgoing, people-persons. Tom is not like that. He is friendly and engaging, but in many ways, he comes across as a regular guy who just happens to hold a high public office. Like most of us, he is a private person. I got to know Tom Marino very early in his work career. I worked at the Stroehmann Brothers Bread Factory on Washington Blvd. in Williamsport during the summers of 1971 through 1974. Working the graveyard 11 p.m.-7 a.m. shift was grueling, but paid extremely well, which I needed badly for college tuition. Tom was one of the two supervisors who worked at the plant in those very early morning hours, and even though we were almost identical in age, barely past our teens, I

found myself looking up to him for his work ethic and problem-solving abilities. I got the job because I was dating the daughter of Bill Steward, who was the General Production Manager for Stroehmann Brothers at the time. (I guess he didn’t want his daughter dating a bum). I eventually married that wonderful daughter of his, and through the ensuing years had the privilege of hearing my fatherin-law tell many stories of his work with Stroehmann’s. One of them had to do with a special team of four young men that he mentored who went with him all over the Eastern United States when there was trouble-shooting needed at one of the Stroehmann plants. I was not surprised that one of those young men that Bill was

Republican during debate on the border funding bill Friday night.” Tom got his fifteen minutes of national fame for that finger-wagging rebuke from Nasty Nancy, but even then did not try to milk it for more than it was worth. Tom Marino always stood out to me by not standing out. At the dedication ceremony of the Bases Loaded Statues on Market and Third Streets in Williamsport in August of 2017, there was a ‘who’s who’ of elected officials all basking in the glow of this memorable event. I saw Tom standing far in the back of the crowd, dressed very casually. I went up to him and asked why he was with us hoi-polloi and not up front with the rest of the dignitaries. He smiled and said he was more comfortable where he was. It did not surprise me. Just a year and a half before, in February of 2016, Bill Steward died at the age of 91. He had been in ailing health for years, and Tom and his wife Edie had visited Bill several times at his home to see how he was doing. The presence of a U.S. Congressman at a funeral in little Montgomery would be a big deal, and Tom was concerned about that. At the church funeral service, he reluctantly came forward and almost apologized for being there because he did not want to draw attention away from Bill’s life, but deeply wanted to acknowledge his debt to this fine man. Afterward, very few besides family went to the gravesite service, but Tom went and stood afar off. He was paying his own silent tribute — a private one.

proud of was my old foreman, Tom Marino. One story he loved to tell was the time that Tom walked into his office to resign. Tom had somehow managed to work his way through college while rising through the bread baking ranks, and Bill even thought it possible that this young man could possibly take his place when he retired. But instead, Tom came in to tell his boss that he appreciated all Bill had done for him but he decided he wanted to become a lawyer. Bill rose up from his desk, walked over to him and shook his hand and told Tom that he wished him the best. Tom did go to law school and become a lawyer, and in 2002, at the age of 40, became District Attorney for Lycoming County. In November of 2010, he was elected to succeed Chris Carney as a member of the U.S. House of Representative in what was then the 10th Congressional District of Pennsylvania. Tom Marino’s most recent election in November of last year was his fifth election to Congress. In these past eight years, Tom Marino worked quietly on issues that were important to area residents but did not make great splashes of headlines, with one notable exception. On August 1, 2014, there was an event which ABC News described, “In an unusual breach of decorum, even for the divided Congress, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi chased Rep. Tom Marino across the House floor, taking offense at comments by the Pennsylvania

and is a great resource to help structure your day. Plus, it feels so satisfying when you cross a to-do off as done. I like to use a bold black pen and mark tasks with a big CHECK. It feels so good. From your physical list, set up notifications and/or alarms on your smartphone to keep you on task throughout the day. Reminders don’t have to be strictly work-related, they can be used for making doctor’s appointments, calling your mom for her birthday, picking up dog food on the way home, etc. Just set a reminder in whichever platform works best for you and then let those “pings” do the work of remembering everything on your to-do list. Also consider merging your work and personal calendars to avoid double booking

and have a better scope of the day, week, and month ahead. If your dentist appointment is on your work calendar, it’ll block off that time, so you know not to schedule any meetings at the same time. And if that Monday morning meeting pops up when you’re checking your weekend plans, you’ll know to wrap-up that Sunday Funday with enough time to get a good night’s rest. Speaking of calendars, paper planners can be very useful, but you have to find one that works well for you. Maybe you need each day to have its own page, or the week laid out across two pages. I like to have enough room to write my general to-do list for each day in my planner. I also like planners with a vintage field guide vibe, because organization can be quite stylish.

Lastly, make spreadsheets. I know excel can be a bit daunting for some, but it’s a very useful tool. Whether you’re tracking expenses, mailing lists, or workflow, spreadsheets can lay it all out for you and show your progress. I’m a huge fan of pivot tables as well. Don’t even get me started on formulas. The organization and reporting potential are limitless! Again, everyone has different organizational challenges, so some of these methods may not fit into your workplace. Certainly, you want to use these tools in moderation, not every email needs a star, or every reminder a ping. It all comes down to finding a system that works for you and using it to your advantage so that you can do the best job possible.

keep my markers as simple as possible, like green means go, as in reply back sooner rather than later, red means stop as in I need more info, and yellow is reply when you can. Another helpful email trick is marking emails as “unread” even after you’ve read them. This bumps those messages to the top of your inbox, keeping them in your sightline and reminding you that a response is still required. If your inbox is too out of hand, or you have a large number of unread emails, consider trying out an app like Boomerang, which lets you set reminders to respond to emails and schedule messages. In addition to labeling emails, I like to make physical to-do lists. Committing things to paper makes them feel more real,

forgot something of vital importance and talked to umpteen college students and staff members about why they chose XYZ University. And because there is never a dull moment in our lives, one afternoon a fire drill went off at one of the aforementioned universities and another time my husband got stuck in a bathroom stall, where he frantically texted me for help. Eventually he got out on his own, but not before I was able to tweet about it to the amusement of many. But mostly, the waiting involved hanging out in the libraries of each school. And by hanging out I mean we found a couple of comfy chairs and spent upwards of eight hours playing solitaire on our phones, surfing the Internet, snacking, watching students filter in and out, eavesdropping on their conversations, perusing daily newspapers and, of course, napping indiscriminately. Thank God we were smart enough to bring along a favorite book or two. I devoured several patently hilarious titles by David Sedaris and Jim Gaffigan while my husband read about politics and the Vietnam War. We wanted to at least appear productive and engaged. Quite frankly, I don’t know how I would have survived even one of the

Interesting to Amazing What did you say? By Tom, son of Ann and Sam

I

must preface this by saying I am far from perfect, and no better than anyone else. But, try as I might, I’ve “blown my stack” at times when I get overly frustrated with something. For many years now, I afterward apologize. What I want to address is the constant decline of what’s spoken in public and considered “OK.” When I was in grade school, I vividly recall my sister jamming a bar of Ivory soap into my mouth and clamping my jaws on it because we were fighting about something. She did this just because I told her that living with her was like living in hel_! It probably wasn’t a coincidence that Mom and Dad insisted that I stay with them and do my homework in the milk house while they milked the cows for months after that. To this day I avoid that brand of soap! In 7th grade, it was “good-bye”

to recesses. Now we had a rigidly structured and commanded Phys. Ed. by a large, muscular man, Mr. R. One day we were in lines at both ends of the gym waiting our turn to dribble a layup. All of a sudden Mr. R. bellowed for everyone but one, Dave, to sit on the bleachers. He made Dave sit on the floor. Mr. R. went to his office behind the bleachers and retrieved a large wooden paddle. Mr. R. lectured us about using bad language. Dave said something he should not have when he missed the basket. After the lecture, he told Dave to stand up and bend over. Dave was terrified, no doubt, and I’m pretty sure the rest of us were scared too, I sure was. Just when we thought Dave was going to be smacked into orbit, Mr. R. told Dave to go sit down. He then told us “I won’t paddle Dave today, but if I ever hear another bad word from any of you, Dave and you will both get paddled.” That

Satellite channels allow most anything. I will close with words from God’s book that I hope will guide and strengthen us. First, three verses from Wise King Solomon’s Book of Proverbs; 15: 1 “A gentle answer turns away wrath, but hard words stir up anger.” Proverbs 16:24 “Kind

words are like honey, sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.” Proverbs 12:18 “Careless words stab like a sword, but the words of wise people bring healing.” The Apostle Paul; Ephesians 4:29 ”Don’t use foul or abusive language. Let everything you say be good and helpful so that your words will be an encouragement to those who hear them.” The greatest Teacher and King Jesus teaches us in Matthew 5:10-11, that “it is not what goes into the mouth

that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person.” He also warns that “on the Day of Judgment, people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words, you will be condemned.” Finally, may you be blessed with these words from King David, Psalm 19:14 “May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, LORD, my Rock, and my Redeemer.”

was a good strategy. No one talked about the incident, much less what the word was because that’s how afraid we were of Mr. R. delivering on this promise. In all my years at the school, I never heard of Mr. R. actually paddling anyone. He definitely “spoke softly and carried a big stick.” I remember some people getting upset in the early 1970s with the “Bad, Bad Leroy Brown” song by Jim Croce. The offensive word was “dam_” in the line “Meanest man in

school bus must also stop until the red lights have stopped flashing, the stop arm is withdrawn, and all children have reached safety. One of the most frequent questions asked regarding the Pennsylvania School Bus Stopping Law is whether a motorist must stop on a multi-lane highway. The answer is yes, a motorist must stop unless they are in the opposing lane of a highway divided by a physical barrier. Physical barriers include grassy medians, traditional or cable guide rails or concrete median barriers. If there is no physical barrier between lanes, all lanes of traffic must stop if a school bus stops with its red lights flashing and stop arm extended. When in doubt, stop. Vehicles also must stop even if the bus is off the roadway on the shoulder according to Lt. Eric

McKean with the Pennsylvania State Police. The shoulder is part of the “highway” and is maintained from berm to berm and includes the paved “roadway”. Unless the bus is on the other side of a divided highway, police will issue citations for motorist failing to stop for a school bus on the shoulder. Motorists should not proceed until the bus turns off the flashing red lights and after all children have reached safety. For more information about the school bus safety and to view an interactive infographic on when to stop for a school bus, visit www. penndot.gov/safety.

SNYDER’S NURSERY

I

n 1982, I was first introduced to firearms, specifically a Fox Model B 16 gauge double barrel, with ventilated rib. This was given to me on my 11th birthday by my Grandmother Kline, along with a small wooden gun cabinet made by my grandfather and his old hunting knife. The year prior my “Pappy Kline” had passed away, and the next year my grandmother and father Gene (aka Butch) saw fit to pass the shotgun down to me. It was not long after that I shot it for the very first time at my dad’s cabin, “Bear Creek Farm,” located in Sullivan County. “Bear Creek” was passed down to my father from my grandfather. My dad hung an old/expired five pack of Ballantine Ale from a tree limb, had me stand about 10 yards away and I fired. The cans exploded, and I was proud of my accomplishment. Before this, I had only shot a BB gun or pellet gun. This was a huge step up for any boy. In 1983, after passing my Hunter Safety Course, I was ready to hunt. In the 1970s and early 1980s, my dad was a Deputy Pennsylvania Game Warden, PA Hunter Safety Instructor, and a science teacher. Most kids from

the early ‘70s to the early ‘90s that graduated from Warrior Run took the Hunter safety course in school with my dad; I was no different. It was always an adventure climbing into my dad’s 1979 International Scout II that he had painted “Game Commission Green” and heading off to “answer a call” -retrieving a road kill, injured animal or helping a farmer or landowner. As a child growing up in Watsontown, we always had an attraction — fawns, owls and more were “temporary” residents at our house until my dad found suitable homes for them. My father has always been a true outdoorsman, with a masters degree in biology and knowledge of all state plants, trees, and animals he was the best “guide” growing up. When I turned 12 and was ready for my first deer season, he quit the Game Commission in order spend time teaching me not only how to hunt safely but to learn more about the outdoors — tracking, identifying and locating game. From that point on we hunted almost every weekend and every season — deer, bear, turkey, pheasant, rabbit, squirrel, grouse, geese, ducks and coyotes. My dad had many friends and people he met while being a Deputy Warden, so he had no shortage of places to hunt —

Kline, wearing a shirt, tie and vest during the late 30s while standing with a hunting party from the Sonestown area — my dad learned from a true “gentleman” hunter. This past deer season was the 36th year that my dad and I hunted deer together, and for the last 20 years, we have been back where it all started, Sullivan County. I grew up in a family that had family reunions in the mountains and celebrated holidays at Bear Creek Farm along the Loyalsock. Most of all went hunting together, cut wood together, mowed fields, went fishing, swam in Bear Creek and enjoyed the outdoors together. In an age where there was no internet, video games or cell phones this was normal activity for many families in Pennsylvania — I wish everyone today could go back to those days, even if just for a day. I still own the Fox and will never part with it. There were a few times in my life that I could have really used the money but selling the Fox was never an option. While I no longer carry the Fox afield, I do take it out of my safe each year and wipe it down — during that time I think about the men that taught me everything I know about the outdoors, Pappy Kline and my dad. I never got to thank my pap, but I want to let my dad know that I couldn’t have had a better “teacher”!

something scarce today. That first deer season came with my dad, and I was leaving the cabin at Bear Creek in the dark and starting up a mountain on foot. After about 15 minutes, he placed me by a large rock and explained to load the Fox when it got light enough to shoot. He said he would be back to get me later and not to move, he gave me a bag that contained my lunch and some snacks. I would like to go on and on about how I sat there, still, quiet and eagerly waiting for the monster buck to come by — truth is I was cold, and this was the first time in my life I was alone in the woods in the pitch dark. I sat there dressed in my grandfather’s old patched tan canvass pants and jacket, thinking that my dad must be miles away in his secret spot. I spent my time trying to figure out my plan when I became lost for days in the woods or attacked by wolves! It wasn’t until I was well into my 30s that he revealed he was not even 50 yards behind me all day long, watching me and my actions. From his vantage point, I am sure he watched me eat my snacks before it got daylight and then eat my lunch probably by 9 a.m. Although I didn’t see a buck that year the memories of my first year hunting with my dad at Bear Creek will last forever. I still often look at the picture of my Grandfather

A Trophy Year By Jim Webb Jr.

W

hat a year it was for our 11th Annual Webb Weekly - Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. If you remember, we renamed the contest in honor of my Uncle Ron Maietta who left us this past year for the big hunting ground in the sky, and Ron Mingle’s family who are fighting the same battle

against MS. Uncle Ron is definitely looking down and smiling at this year’s winners. First place was Haley Mumma. Her 18-point monster with an 18 ¾” spread scored 183 2/8. What an absolute tank of a buck! See Ken Hunter’s story, next page. As always, we use the Sahara Club International scoring system, which seems to be the fairest to cover all seasons. This is the second year in a row girl pow-

er has taken the top prize. Last year Miss Abby Healy was our winner. Second place went to our leader after the completion of the fall archery season, Beau Gair. His trophy checked in with 18 points and a 17-inch spread, scoring 166 7/8. Beau definitely knows bow hunting. I thought for sure it would stand as the winner after the season ended, but you just never know what’s going to come around the corner these days in Penns Woods. Third place went to Bruce Samp-

son. His big buck down sported a rack of 11 points and was 18 3/8” wide, scoring 156. It would have won most big buck contests, but not this one. Uncle Ron’s 4th place winner was George Schneider. His 13-point was high and just outside the ears, scoring 154 6/8 SCI. Just an absolutely beautiful whitetail sporting one of those high and tight racks many hunters dream about. Thank you again to Poust Taxidermy for providing first place prize

That gets us to our final winner. Anyone who enters the contest is eligible for the random drawing of a Remington rifle courtesy of Sauers Trading, right down the street here in Southside. The father-son team of Jon and Donny are a fixture here in the Borough. Of course, the rifle includes all the trimmings — scope, caps, sling, gun case, and ammo. Congratulations to Mr. James Frye on winning this great prize. His buck was also a trophy, even though it didn’t have to be, 10 points with

an 18 ½” spread. That’s a pretty darn good season, a big buck and a great gun! Thank you to all that entered, I can’t wait to see what’s brought in next year; it’s definitely my favorite contest of the year. A tip of my Webb Weekly hunting cap to Ron Mingle for overseeing the annual event. And last but not least, we will be making a donation toward the fight against MS for every buck entered in Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. I will touch base on this in a future article.

Webb Weekly’s ‘Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest’ Winner is Haley Mu mma of Jersey Shore By Ken Hunter

H

aley Mumma, a 14-year-old young lady from Jersey Shore, has succeeded in taking top honors for the highest scoring buck rack in the annual Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. Haley topped the list of over 60 entries in our big buck contest that’s been going on for about eight years now. Last year another teenage gal took top honors. The deer racks are scored by an official scorer using the Safari Club International (SCI) scoring guidelines. Hayley’s buck had 18 points with an 18 6/8spread, which resulted in a 183 2/8 SCI score. I recently spoke with Haley, a ninth grader attending Walnut Street Christian School in Jersey Shore and asked her how she got

interested in hunting. She told me that when she was only nine or ten, “I liked being in the woods, and it was cool to go with my dad.” She went on to tell me how exciting it was to be with her dad when he got a black bear. Her dad, Scott also related to me how exciting and satisfying it was for him while with Haley when she shot the awardwinning buck. Haley shot the big buck on opening day of the regular firearms deer season. The rainy, cold morning didn’t produce any action, so Haley and her dad decided to move to a location where they had spotted a nice ten-point the year before. After a time at the new spot, Haley and her dad considered leaving but decided to hang in there a little bit longer — five minutes later the buck showed up chasing two does. When the opportunity presented itself, Haley

She also told me she is interested in pursuing a career with the Pennsylvania State Game Commission as a game warden. Obviously being a mentor to your children or grandchildren can be very rewarding; Haley’s story proves that. It also shows that maybe just a little more patience and persistence while hunting might result in a “once in a lifetime hunt.” Congratulations to Haley and we wish you the best with your future plans.

Haley was confident of a good hit, however her dad was a bit skeptical until the buck dropped 30 yards farther and all doubt was removed. While this was Haley’s first buck, she took a doe as well this year, and she tagged a doe last year. With the great success of this year’s hunt and the strong support and mentoring of her dad Haley has further cemented her desire to enjoy the outdoors and hunting. While hunting ranks pretty high, Haley also enjoys a number of other activities including basketball and softball. She is also into nature photography and drawing of nature and wildlife. Clearly, Haley is a multifaceted young lady who is driven by her love of the outdoors, and that’s further reflected in her future plans. Haley told me she

The Roving Sportsman… Hunters Are Not Poachers By Jon Pries

O

n May 30, 2014, Satao, one of the world’s largest African elephants was killed by a poisoned arrow shot by a poacher. Satao was known as a tusker because his tusks, which weighed over 100 pounds, were so long that they almost touched the ground. Today, the killing of elephants, our largest land animal, continues with thousands being slaughtered annually - by poachers – for the black market selling of elephant ivory. In January of 2019, at the Safari Club International (SCI) Convention in Reno, Nevada, representatives from an anti-hunting group gained entry to expose what they called potentially illegal activity by Convention exhibitors. The anti-hunters publicized their findings, targeting SCI and several individual exhibitors. The accusers claimed that the exhibitors were selling items in violation of Nevada state law. As it turned out, the accusers had not properly researched the law, or intentionally mischaracterized it

before publicizing their accusations. Further, their accusations were quickly broadcast by hundreds of internet communications, which similarly chose to skip any investigation which would have revealed the weakness of the allegations. Many states today have adopted laws restricting or prohibiting the sale of various animal parts of numerous animals, particularly African species and endangered or threatened animals. As this instance turned out, no one had broken the Nevada laws. So, why should you even care about what is happening in Africa or at some Convention all the way across the country? Does it really mean anything to a squirrel hunter or turkey hunter in Pennsylvania? Yes, it does. The standard definition of a hunter is “a person or animal that hunts.” The standard definition of a poacher is “a person who hunts or catches game or fish illegally.” Take note: The hunter legally conducts himself, while the poacher goes forth and conducts his activities while disregarding the laws. In the example above of the illegal

Annually the Department of Human Services issues financial guidelines for the Community Spouse of a patient residing in a nursing home. Applying for Medicaid long-term care benefits is a complex procedure and extensive assets may be protected but this requires a comprehensive plan designed to maximize the allowances, and utilize other methods to provide for the Community Spouse. Some of the important 2019 standards are: Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance: - $2,057.50. The Community Spouse is permitted unlimited income. If she/he doesn’t earn the minimum it is possible to redirect some of the patient’s income to the Community Spouse. Monthly Housing Allowance: - $617.25. The Community Spouse may receive a housing allowance from the patient’s income. The housing allowance is separate from the monthly maintenance needs allowance and is designed to protect the Community Spouse from impoverishment. Minimum Resource Standard: - $25,284.00. DHS allows married couples to protect 50% of their total resources (plus some valuable exempt resources) or a minimum of $25,284.00. For couples with total resources greater than twice the minimum, 50% is protected up to the Maximum Resource Standard of $126,420.00. The attorneys at Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your resources for a reasonable fee. As always, the first consultation is free.

Those who are adamant in their quest to stop all forms of hunting, legal or illegal, have long term goals and will not cease their objectives. We, as hunters – not poachers – must constantly remind ourselves that the line between hunters and poachers is becoming more blurred with the passage of time and as the news media jumps to conclusions and erroneously refers to an illegal activity as having been conducted by a “hunter” rather than correctly calling the individual a “poacher.” The huge and ever-growing presence and influence of social media can have a very damaging effect when information is passed on without proper research or verification of its accuracy. Yes, while there are anti-hunting individuals and organizations, they constitute only a small percentage of our population but are increasingly vocal and active. The majority of the population either supports hunting or is neutral on the subject and we, as lawabiding and responsible hunters, have an obligation and a duty to speak of the positive benefits of hunting to those who do not participate and to make clear the distinction between a hunter and a poacher.

poaching of African elephants for their ivory, you should know that the ivories are hacked out of the skull of the dead animal and the entire carcass that remains is left to rot or to be consumed by hyenas and vultures. You should also know that while poaching is rampant, there is also some hunting of elephants that is legal, but extremely limited and monitored by the government. Generally speaking, a legal hunt is conducted when a rogue animal becomes aggressive and a threat to a village or community. The hunt is restricted to that one animal only, and the hunter is accompanied by a Professional Hunter (PH) and government personnel. Once the animal is dispatched, all of the useable meat is given to nearby villagers for human consumption. The cost of the hunt is extremely high. Generally, the greatest percent of the price goes to the government to help fund the cost of stopping the illegal poaching trade. Money is used to obtain equipment and hire personnel to track and intercept the poachers and bring them to justice. The second example of the antihunters targeting the SCI Convention is something that is occurring and will occur increasingly as time goes on.

I tip the jig with some kind of bait; more often than not that will be a wax worm but maggots, mealworms, and even red worms will also produce. This past week myself, my wife, brother, son and ice-fishing friend Ed Ott all hit a local lake resulting in a good opening day. Any jig with bright green in it seemed to garner strikes. If you are new to the ice jigging technique you might want to add a tiny bobber once you determine the depth you want to fish; even the slightest movement of the bobber can signal a strike so don’t just wait for it to

pop under. Many of us will often fish without a bobber as well, and with this technique, you must “feel” any light taps and set the hook. Something else I often do to increase the action is to add another jig about a foot and a half above my terminal jig, this way I’m actually fishing at two different depths at the same time. Last week I set the hook on a strike and pulled two fish up through the ice-one on each jig; that happens several times each year. Come on out and join the rest of the hard water walkers-you might be surprised how much fun it can be.

a two-foot long piece of a broken spinning rod inserted; the reel was a three dollar plastic reel-I’m still using it today. There are a number of different types of rods and reels available to today’s ice-fishermen, and most are relatively inexpensive, and they all get the job done. Probably more important is how the rod is used. I keep things on the ultralight side when I’m going after panfish like crappies, bluegills, and perch. Two to four-pound test fluorocarbon is my usual rig with a tiny ice-fishing jig at the business end.

signing baseballs for United Way supporters. In the aftermath of 9/11, the World Series was pushed back causing him to have to cancel an agreed-upon local October United Way appearance. But true to his word he rescheduled his time to attend an event a few months later. A few years later, during a Christmas shopping outing at the mall, a young man bumped into me at a crowded store. “I’m sorry Scott,” I heard a voice say. Looking up it was Mussina trying to corral his excited sons. As I exited the store, I passed a kiosk selling sports memorabilia merchandise. A young man was pleading with his mother to purchase an autographed Mike Mussina

photo on display. As the scene unfolded Mike and his family walked by unaware of what was going on at the stand they had just passed. Mussina has been passing on his sports expertise to baseball and basketball teams at Montoursville where he is now the Warriors head basketball coach. Just after his retirement from baseball, he spent a few years coaching basketball at the junior high school level. As my own South Williamsport junior high team was warming up prior to a game at Montoursville a few of my players broke from our layup line and excitedly said to me, “Mike Mussina is their coach!” Indeed, it is a little tough to have the full attention of young teenagers when

one of their baseball heroes is sitting on your opponent’s bench. I thought it was most fitting that when the Hall of Fame phone call came Mussina’s way he was dressed in sweats just finishing practice with his Montoursville team. While the next several months will have the national sports spotlight focused on him it will not change who he is despite the lasting fame he will now endure. Millions know who Mike Mussina is, but only a precious few really know what makes him tick. Cooperstown will have his bronzed likeness and will hear his induction speech but Montoursville, Pennsylvania will always be his nesting place.

recall one coach asked him who had taught him to pitch. To which Mussina replied, “My Dad.” From that day forward his local legend began to grow. From Montoursville High School to Stanford University to the Major Leagues Mussina’s private life has never been compromised by his athletic greatness. He has shunned the spotlight, supported his family, community and those causes to which he was drawn. “After several years of avoiding the dentist, the time had come to fix my smile. Due to the unpleasant condition of my upper teeth, I felt as though my professional and personal life was suffering. Fixing my smile would increase my confidence and get my life back on track. Knowing I would need several different procedures; extractions, fillings, crowns, and eventually a top denture. I wanted a dentist that could provide all these services under the same roof. Apple Dental was a perfect fit. Time is very valuable, and I did not want to waste it running between two different offices! Right from the start, I knew Apple Dental was the correct choice. Dr. Leggieri and Andrea Haines took excellent care of me. Every procedure needed to fix my smile was properly explained, and executed to perfection. The entire staff was professional and friendly. Above all, I felt very comfortable, and at ease. May 18th is a day I will forever remember, I found my smile again! Dr. Leggieri and Andrea Haines created the perfect top denture. The fit is so precise, and comfortable, no adhesive is necessary! I highly recommend Apple Dental for all of your dental care needs. You will not be disappointed!”

calmly told his youngest to jump in the car and they exited stage left. The name Mussina was now trending on all of the major networks. I don’t see much of Mike unless it’s in a local gymnasium. I know him enough to say hello but that’s about it. I tried reaching out to say congrats, but Moose is a very private person, and prefers to stay off the beaten path. I am no Peter Gammons or Buster Olney. His brother Mark and I are pals, and I reached out for some help. I sent him a few questions to assist with this article and Mark got back to me after talking with his HOF brother. Thanks. Moose is overwhelmed by all of the praise. He stays away from social media and tends to hide from the spotlight. The Hall of Fame ceremony is months away and Mike is more focused on the basketball season and getting geared for playoffs. Love it. Congratulations Moose on this well deserved honor. I understand you are going into the Hall without a logo. Both the Oriole and Yankee organization played huge roles in his tremendous career. Tough to pick for sure. How about a Montoursville M on that bronzed cap instead? Well done Mike. Cheers.

Mike came back to Montoursville to spend more time with the family. “I’m just thankful to that first year where 20 percent of the writers felt I deserved a vote,” he continued. “There are a lot of very, very good players who don’t make it past the first ballot. I appreciate people staying with me and doing their research. It is going to be tremendously challenging for someone to get to 300 wins again. I don’t know if this changes how the writers feel about pitchers, but I am glad they felt that way about me.” I personally watched the entire press conference on my mobile device. Mike shared the spotlight with former Yankee teammate Mariano Rivera, Seattle’s Edgar Martinez, and the late Roy Holliday. Moose was quite candid and appeared to be a tad nervous. These Hall of Famers entertained several questions about their careers and the future of the game. I loved every minute, and enjoyed the healthy banter amongst the players. It was a rather refreshing conversation. Mike got the call while he was finishing up varsity hoops practice in Montoursville, and he wasn’t allowed to say anything until the official announcement was made. Moose

Competitive Cheerleading Continues to Grow at Williamsport as Team Excels

W

hen head coach Stephanie Corter started to put the Williamsport C o m p e t i t i v e Cheerleading team together three years ago, something happened for the first time since she started coaching. She looked down at her list of participants and saw the name Nick Stevens on her roster. It was the first time she had ever encountered a male student wanting to join the team, but didn’t shy away from the challenge of incorporating him into the routine. “Working with a male cheerleader for the first time was challenging,” Corter said. “I didn’t know a whole lot about coed stunting and really didn’t think I needed to know too much. I learned a lot over the last three years coaching Nick. He has taught me a lot and has grown into a huge asset for the team.” Stevens and the rest of the squad recently earned a gold medal at the District IV Competitive Cheer Championships coed division, advancing into the State Championship competition in Hershey. They competed in the first day of states and reached higher ranks than any other cheer team in Williamsport’s history. Williamsport defeated Canton’s varsity

team at the district competition. The team then spent the next week focusing on their routine and fine tuning all the jumps and moves they would be incorporating into it for States. “Qualifying for States is a lot of preparation and stress but Districts is just as demanding because without winning Districts we wouldn’t go to States,” Corter said. “We have been practicing this routine and perfecting every move we could for months. We also prepare this routine not only for District and States but other competitions as well.” Cheerleading practice isn’t simply working on a cheer and coordinating a small dance anymore. It’s hours of learning how to tumble, spot other cheerleaders, and being in top physical shape to pull off multiple moves throughout the course of a routine. Most competitive cheerleaders and routines resemble gymnastics more than a traditional cheerleading squad. “We practice two sometimes three days a week for two or three hours plus go to tumbling lessons on top of practices and schoolwork,” Corter said. “The rest of the Districts performance was just about spot on and winning Districts

was a huge achievement for this team.” Stevens was part of the performance and played an important role with one of the many stunts the team executed throughout the tournament at Districts. As rare as it is to have a Brett male cheerleader on the Crossley high school team, the support for him wasn’t rare at all as the entire gym cheered when Stevens helped with the routine. “I’m glad I got the opportunity to coach Nick and learn what I’ve learned so far to hopefully have more male cheerleaders in the future,” Corter said. “He plays a very important role on the team. Nick had no problem fitting in with the team and now everywhere we go to compete he makes more friends.” The cheerleading season doesn’t end with States either. The team’s second competition of the season was the Jingle Bell Battle. It was the first time in Corter’s three seasons coaching the team she entered them in this particular tournament. The team did not disappoint. They executed a nearly flawless routine on the way to being named the Grand Champion of the event. The group will head to the North American Spirit Tournament in Atlantic City, NJ in May

thanks to the win. “We performed one of our best routines and when the team came off the floor, they knew they did an amazing job just by the big smile I had on my face,” Corter said. “When they announced our name, the team and I couldn’t have been louder and prouder. We had not won a Grand Champion award in a few years. The team deserved to win with the routine they performed and all the hard work they put into the routine. It was definitely a great day to be a Millionaire.” The Millionaire Competitive Cheerleading squad is starting to make a name for itself as the sport continues to grow in this area. Corter has put her stamp on the program in three years of coaching and the future looks bright as she continues to push the team to new heights. “Winning Grand Champion at The Jingle Bell Battle in Harrisburg and our Districts win is the most memorable moment yet this season and I’m sure we’ll be able to add to that before this season is over,” Corter said. “For the team their moments are hitting their stunts and pyramids. That is most important to them. Having our male cheerleader has been an experience that I will never forget as he is the first male ever that Williamsport Area High School Competitive Cheer Team has had cheer and he has made this year’s routine fun and enjoyable.”
