Coming to America, No Trojan Horse Required

T

he first thing that comes to my mind when I think about immigration and our Country is the welcoming Lady of Freedom, the Statue of Liberty. I imagine my Italian ancestors as they approached Ellis Island, and that brightly glowing torch extending toward heaven that welcomed them. The relief and joy they must have felt after completing the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. The opportunity waiting just ahead of them in the United States of America. All those migrating to our shores at this time were required to meet immigration standards. The United States of America has been the most welcoming Nation on Earth since its colonization. Everyone that has called our Nation home has come from somewhere else. Including the American Indian. They were simply the first to migrate to the geographical area that would later become our Country. Our Nation is a work in progress and still relatively young compared to most countries around the world, including those that have faded into the history books. There has never been a greater success story than the United States of America. No country or empire has ever provided the freedom, opportunity, and quality of life we have been blessed with here at home. Sure mistakes have been made, and people have been treated in an un-American way, but our

Nation has always moved forward to try to correct the mistakes and create equality for all. No other nation has ever done this. Our Nation is an example of Freedom in progress and the constant commitment to improving Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness for everyone. Somehow this all gets lost by the mainstream media of today. The history and evolution of the United States of America also have not been taught accurately in our educational systems. There is a definite price for freedom that needs to be taught and is forgotten about. There is also a definite price for change, which needs to be taught in a historically accurate manner. Everyone who has come to our shores has paid a price for freedom and change. The idea portrayed by the national media that people immigrating to our Country are being kept out is a flat out lie. The Statue of Liberty has never been more welcoming. The 2016 census found there were 35 million people that were first generation residents of our Country. This includes the children that have been born to those that have immigrated. This represents the largest climb in immigration since 1910. It is estimated between the years 2027 and 2038 this migration to our great land will be the driving force behind population growth. The current process to gain entry into our Country begins with the very basic

information our ancestors provided. Of course, there are more questions and more information required including background checks. It is a much different world today post 9/11. However, a green card to reside in the U.S. is easily obtained. Nine out of ten that follow the law and Jim seek legal entrance into our Webb, Jr. Country are welcomed. The 10% that do not gain entry are deemed to be a threat against the United States based upon health, security, previous immigration violations, financial, or a criminal background basis. There is absolutely no problem with the immigration policy of our Country. The problem is with those that circumvent the process and illegally set foot on American soil, coupled with the liberal socialists within our government that believe these foreign nomads should be treated better than our Veterans. There is a reason they are circumventing the system. The true price of what this is costing our Nation cannot even be calculated. If let go, this will rip apart the very foundation our Country was built upon. That of law and order, which you must obey to first enter, then hopefully become a citizen by assimilating to the law and structure of the United States of America. I’ve never agreed with President Trump on the building of a wall from sea to shining sea. The pure mileage and terrain this wall would cover makes it impractical. But we need to secure our southern border

immediately. There are definitely places where we need a wall, but a combination of physical obstructions, observation towers, micro military bases, military air coverage — including drones and the latest in satellite and cyber technology is a much better approach. We need to apply the same type of thinking to our northern and coastal borders. The cost of protecting our freedom should never be an issue. Our way of life begins with our national security. There is nothing more ridiculous to me than the Democratic Party claiming to be looking out for the American taxpayers’ wallet by opposing anything that has to do with national security. This complete liberal/socialistic thinking that anyone should be allowed passage into our Country reaches the point of being treasonous. Their denial that there is a highway of heroin that runs through the U.S./Mexican border, that thousands of murderers, rapists, and violent criminals enter from the south, that terrorists from across the globe consider our southern border soft, is beyond delusional. The Greeks could have saved themselves the time and effort of the Trojan Horse if Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer had been guarding the gates of Troy. They, along with their liberal/socialistic think tank, would have just left them walk right on in and help themselves to whatever they wanted. They mean us no harm they all would have declared. Wait, what am I thinking? There would have been no gates at the border if they were in charge. God Bless America.

The TRIANGLE Italian tradition continues , along with great wet-aged steaks at family friendly prices

’all. For real though. It feels like it’s been the longest winter ever. It’s like Winterfell around here. And I don’t know about you, but I’m ready to get out of the house. Now, you know how much it bothers me when people say there isn’t anything to do around here. Just in case you’ve forgotten, I will always argue that if you are bored in the Williamsport area, you haven’t even tried to find something to do. But you know what? I like you. So I’ll just go ahead and drop a bunch of the things that are happening in the area in the next week or so right here for your convenience. Easy. Peasy. On February 20th, The Groove Orient is playing at the Bar on Market. The show starts at 10:00 p.m. You can check out the details on page 6, but in case you missed the cover the Uptown Music Collective has shows all weekend. This time they are focusing on the ladies with their “Women of Pop” show. The UMC never fails to impress, so if you have the chance to catch one of their shows, please do! On Thursday the 21st, the Sawhorse Café will be doing another ‘Dutch Hill Dinner Party.’ Beginning at 5:00 p.m., they will be serving up Indian cuisine via phone and walk-in orders and will serve until the food runs out. As always, the weekends are busy around

While you are out and about, you can work off some of those Growers Market calories by joining UPMC Susquehanna and the YMCA for their 8th annual Day of Dance. tarting on Thursday, February 21st and running through Saturday, February 23rd, the Uptown Music Collective will bring its new show, Women of Pop: 21st Century Divas, to the Community Theater League in Williamsport for their now yearly three-night /four performance stand. This exciting performance will feature the music of outstanding female artists, including Adele, Alicia Keyes, Beyoncé, Amy Winehouse, Rhianna, and more,

brought to life by the school’s talented performers in the intimate setting of the CTL. This show is sponsored in part by M&T Bank & The Hartman Group. Although the word today is often used in a negative way, a “diva” is traditionally a celebrated female singer and a woman of outstanding talent in the world of opera, film and popular music. “In the world of popular music, women took the mantle of leadership in the late ’90s and have reigned supreme in that world

Uptown Music Collective to Bring Women of Pop to the Community Theatre League

to the current day,” said Uptown Music Collective Executive Director, Dave Brumbaugh. “This concert will showcase our talented female vocalists delivering powerful performances on hit song after hit song by some of the most important female vocalists of the last eighteen years”. Women of Pop: 21st Century Divas is based around the music of three wildly popular artists. Alicia Keys was composing songs by age 12 and was signed at 15 years old by Columbia Records. Her first album, Songs in A Minor, was critically and commercially successful. That success was soon followed by The Diary of Alicia Keys in 2003 which won four Grammy Awards. Today she is considered a musical icon of the first order and was named by Billboard as the top R&B artist of the 2000s decade.

Adele’s debut album “19” brought her a Grammy for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance in 2009. She then took the world by storm in 2012 with her enormously popular second album “21”, which sold over 31 million copies. Beyoncé first found success as a member of the vocal group Destiny’s Child in the 1990s. In the years since she has found success in both Film, and as a performer earning five Grammy awards for her first album “Dangerously in Love”, and continuing that success selling over 100 million records as a solo artist and being named the Top Radio Songs Artist of the Decade and Top Female Artist of the 2000s decade in 2009 by Billboard. Other artists to be featured in this epic performance will by Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Jessie J. and more.

The Collective has opened my ears to a ton of different music and I have loved every show we have done, but now that it’s the music I used to sing at the top of my lungs in the back of the car as a little girl, it holds a special place in my heart.” Additional sponsors for this performance include The Gaetano Family, Le Jeune Chef, Jeff & Crissy McGinness, The Lockard Agency, and FASTSIGNS. Media sponsors include Lamar Advertising, NorthCentralPa. com, The Graphic Hive, and Backyard Broadcasting. Tickets for the performance are $20.00 for adults and $15.00 for students. “This performance is a labor of love for our core group of female vocalists,” said Brumbaugh. “For many, it’s a dream come true to have the opportunity to bring this music to the stage, and the intimate environment of the Community Theater League is the perfect venue for this powerful, entertaining and highly emotional performance. Get your tickets early, even though there are four shows, it’s a small theater and the seats sell out fast.” Women of Pop: 21st Century Divas will feature Collective students who have been diligently preparing for this event for over two months. Along with the live music, there will be a professional grade light and sound show organized by the students themselves. As with all Uptown Music Collective performances, the students are not only the performers but also direct the show. There is also a group of younger students, called “Tech Monkeys” who will serve as stage technicians. The cast for the show is drawn from the Uptown Music Collective’s much heralded Special Performance Group 1. This show is produced by UMC Alum, Alexis Best and is directed by Uptown Music Collective Seniors, Alexis Carnevale (WAHS) & Shayne Williams (WAHS), along with a leadership committee that includes UMC students Leah Batman, Tate Berkey (Danville Area H.S.), Izzy Brumbaugh (WAHS), Molly Chapman (Montoursville Area

esterday and last Saturday were busy days for members of Alpha Gamma Epsilon Fraternity and Lycoming College. They were hard at work making a combination scout room and fallout shelter at the Bethune-Douglas Community Center. Assisting the collegians were a number of 12 and 13-yearold members of Troop 19, a Boy Scout group sponsored by the center. Yesterday they walled up three windows with cinder blocks, patched cracks in the wall, and cemented walls of the 38.5 x 23-foot room.

Last week they cleared the junk, which had been stored through the years, removed heavily deteriorated wallboard and patched the ceiling. Next, the boys will paint ceilings, walls, and the floor. Otto D. Souter, Jr., associated professor of Sociology at Lycoming College, has been working with the boys. He said the project was the first off-campus work project at the college this term. Arthur Strothers, a member of the board of directors at Bethune Douglas, is supervising the project. The community center has squeezed $150 from its budget for the project, and Lundy Paint Company has donated some of the materials.

County Hall Corner Bicycles: To Buy or Not To Buy? By Larry Stout

A

long debate over a grant request at a recent Lycoming County Commissioners meeting seemed to take on Shakespearian dimensions — “to be or not to be, that is the question.” Hamlet was talking about his mortality, but this debate appeared much less momentous. The subject was about bicycles for parolees. When a county agency applies for a state or federal grant, it must be approved by the County Commissioners. In 99 percent of these applications, there is little to no discussion, because to be honest, better than half of the county’s budget is met through these grants. So, it was surprising that in the regular work session on January 22nd, an item listed on the agenda asking for “approval for AOPC (Administrative Office of the PA Courts) Problem Solving Courts Discretionary Grant” would become so contentious. One very small part of this grant included a bicycle buying program for those on parole. Jennifer McConnell, Director of Court Services, was challenged by Commissioner Mussare on the need for the bikes. She gave several reasons and said they were especially important to those who had lost their driving privileges as a result of their offenses. A debate then ensued back and forth from Ms. McConnell to the commission-

ers themselves about the merit of supplying these bicycles. It was not long or drawn out, but it did get noted by the local newspaper journalist covering the meeting and was included in an article of the work session in the following day’s edition of the local newspaper. So it was that on the regular Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on Thursday, January 24th, that the president judge of the Court of Common Pleas, a highly respected former county planner, and three county commissioners debated the pros and cons of bikes for those who got busted. It started with Jerry Walls, who responded quickly when Commissioner Chairman Jack McKernan opened the meeting by asking if there was anyone who wished to comment on “agenda items only.” Jerry Walls spent nearly four decades on the Lycoming County Planning Commission and is today a driving force in the 22-county Susquehanna River Greenway Partnership. Almost a living legend, it is like those commercials used to say about E. F. Hutton — when he speaks, everyone listens. He read softly but eloquently from a prepared text on how bicycle usage should be encouraged in every respect. He noted it would help parolees get to work, purchase necessities, and would be especially beneficial to those who struggled with addiction as there were physical

benefits that could be gained from bicycle usage. Judge Nancy Butts presence was also a high profile individual that magnified the issue considerably, and she addressed the commissioners on how beneficial it was to have incentive tools such as the bicycle program. She related the importance of using these as an avenue to alleviating poverty and creating self-sufficiency. Though agreeing in principle, Commissioner Mussare, in particular, could not justify yet another expense item that fell on the back of the taxpayers. He noted that billions and billions of dollars have been expended on drug rehab nationally and that if an addict needs a bike, they should buy a bike. He felt that buying one for them would take their accountability away. Judge Butts countered that those in the program have “earned the privilege” due to their progress and accountability in the program. She stated emphatically it was not an entitlement. Commissioner Mussare countered that he is very concerned about seniors who are ‘crying’ because they can’t afford the taxes they must pay. His dilemma was approving bikes for addicts when senior citizens were losing their homes. Commissioner Mirabito tried to take a broad view reflecting on the need for the community to re-think these issues. He stated that just locking people up is not the answer, that innovative solutions needed to be found. And so it went, back and forth round and

LYCOMING COUNTY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

round, until finally a vote was taken. The grant request was approved. But now, here is the kicker to the story. All of this commotion and conversation was over a total amount of $300 (yes, that is not a misprint - three hundred dollars!) for the purchase of five bicycles. At $60/each, these are obviously very no-frills vehicles composed of two wheels held on a frame, propelled by pedals attached to a chain on the back wheel, and steered with handlebars attached to the front wheel. In other words, plain old, garden variety, bicycles. So, why was this so much ado about so very little? Like many things in county government, as in life, the bike issue was more than about the bikes. Since three Ben Franklin bills would buy these bikes, it is fitting to close with Franklin’s poetic parable, “For the want of a nail the shoe was lost, For the want of a shoe the horse was lost, For the want of a horse the rider was lost, For the want of a rider the battle was lost, For the want of a battle the kingdom was lost, And all for the want of a horseshoe nail.” Or a bicycle.

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…

Winter Foundation Tips

N

o matter what that groundhog said, it’s still winter with freezing temps, snow, slush, chapped lips, and flaky skin. And while everyone agrees that human hibernation is a great idea, it’s unlikely to take hold, so we still must get up each morning and face the day. The key word here is “face” and, more importantly, the best wintertime care for your face. Here are a few tips for winter weather foundation, hydration, and application. During the winter you want a foundation that is moisturizing and hydrating, but not full of oil. You’ll also want to take more time to prep your skin with products like a primer and a heavier day cream. I recommend starting to hydrate your face the night before with a moisturizing sheet mask, or overnight treatment. Also, avoid over-washing your face

during the winter. Hot water can lead to even drier skin; it’s best to go with lukewarm water. On really blistering days, I forgo washing my face with water all together in the morning and instead use a rose toner to clear off any overnight facemasks from the evening before. Some of my favorite daily moisturizers for winter are Mary Kay’s Intense Moisturizing Cream, Eucerin Sensitive Skin Experts AntiWrinkle Face Cream, and Simple Sensitive Skin Replenishing Rich Moisturizer. Out of these three, the Mary Kay product is the thickest and packs the most hydrating wallop! Wintertime foundations should be light-reflecting, not matte, as matte finishes can accentuate dry patches and cause even more flakes. Also, be mindful that your skin will likely be much paler than in warmer months. You may need a different shade of foundation

for the winter to better match your complexion. This won’t be a drastic color change, probably one shade or two lighter than your “summer skin” Bernadette depending on how Ulsamer deeply you tan. For a luminous formula, check out Laura Mercier Flawless Lumiere Radiance Foundation, which is a bit on the pricey side, but with skincare ingredients like Vitamin C and mushroom extract, you’re getting both coverage and care in one product. For a budget-friendly option, try Pacifica’s Alight Clean Foundation with a hit of hyaluronic acid inside to boost moisture. Even with the right shade and moisturizer, skin can still appear a bit dull in cold weather. For a bit of glow, try layering NARS Super Radiant Booster under your foundation. Or, add a highlighter in combination with your blush.

e.l.f.’s Baked Highlighter will create a radiant glow applied wet or dry to enhance your pigmentation. Of course, no matter which products you use, if you don’t apply them to withstand winter weather, they won’t be much use to you or your face. Start with thinner layers of foundation, then build up as you need it. If you’re flakey or dry, don’t rub or drag your makeup. Instead, stipple and press to avoid lifting the scaly skin. Give your foundation sponges a break and try duo fiber brushes. Many brands will have their own makeup, and you can get specific foundation, stippling, and concealer brushes to cover all of your application needs. True, spring is getting close, but we’re still in full-on winter. So, if you haven’t already, take stock of moisturizer, foundation, and brushes and stock up on those cosmetic winter must-haves! Oh, and just as a reminder, Daylight Savings is March 10th, less than a month away!

Stanley found us when he was struggling to survive. He was under 2 lbs., and a very sick kitten. We got Stanley healthy after many vet appointments and had hoped to find him a home as Dave is allergic to cats. Nine years later Stanley lives indoors only and runs the house, and Dave takes an allergy pill. ~ Submitted by Tammy & Dave B. from Hughesville.

Meet Bestselling Author Adam Makos at Otto Books on Sat., Feb. 23, from 3pm to 6pm

F

rom author and Montoursville native Adam Makos comes the true story of a tank gunner’s journey into the heart of the Third Reich. After seeing his buddies get cut down by enemy armor, 21-yearold tank gunner Clarence Smoyer

from Lehighton, Pennsylvania, is assigned to an experimental T26 Pershing tank, the tool he needs to keep his friends alive. But with this award comes a deadly new role: now his crew will spearhead the assault into Cologne. Battling through the city, Clarence

will engage a Panther in a duel immortalized on film. And he’ll square-off with Gustav Schaefer, a German tanker sent on a suicide mission to stop the Americans. As Clarence and Gustav trade fire, something happens that will haunt Clarence into modern day, drawing him back to Cologne to do the unthinkable: to face his enemy, one last time. Can’t wait to dig into “Spearhead?” Author-signed copies of “Spearhead” will be available at Otto Books starting February 19.

This Week’s LION Commissioner Candidate Gabe Campana By Larry Stout

T

he starting gate for the May Primary will have a crowded field for the office of County Commissioner. The count could be as high as eight to ten candidates, including the incumbents, but probably none are as well known as Gabe Campana. After three terms as Williamsport mayor, Campana felt that he had succeeded in all the goals he had set for himself when he first ran for office twelve years ago, and now desires to see if he could apply his knowledge and experience in the direction of county government. With twelve years on the Williamsport City Council and twelve years as Mayor of Williamsport, Campana brings a wealth of government experience to the table. It is an impressive resume. During his tenure, the city has seen some tremendous revitalization. There have been 250 businesses created and $600 million in new construction in the city. Step back to 2007, and Williamsport was a city without the Cinema Center, the Liberty Arena, Kohl’s, the new YMCA, the “Greens,” none of which came without lots of pulling and tugging with all the various stakeholders. He has never been one to rest on his laurels, as it seems as soon as one project is

finished, he already has at least one more already in progress. Currently, it is “Connect Williamsport,” a major renewal of the East Third Street/Old City area with traffic improvements, news signals, and crosswalks, highlighted by Lycoming College’s new Gateway Building. Once finished, this will not only link the city with the Susquehanna River Walk from Penn Tech to Lycoming College but will also encourage developers to invest in the Old City area, which is already happening as new shops are already starting to emerge. It is tricky to promote economic development without enlarged city budgets, but Mayor Campana somehow found a way to do it. In the twelve budgets he presented, only two contained tax increases. Williamsport is one of two Class C cities in Pennsylvania that have received an A+ Bond Rating from Standard and Poor’s. As much as Campana was committed to making the city a better place to live and work and a more vibrant place to visit with entertainment and dining options in the downtown, there has always been an elephant in the room that cannot be ignored — crime. This was a problem he had to face even before Day 1 as mayor. On the evening of Friday, January 4th, 2008, seven people were shot in downtown Williamsport, all in various locations, one of which

died. When Campana learned of the shootings as others did from the paper the following morning, he faced a tough choice. He was mayor-elect, two days away from his inauguration, holding no authority at that point. But he quickly learned that city residents feared leaving their homes, and the tourist and commercial community feared a reaction that would jeopardize their businesses. He called a meeting of Greg Foresman, his new chief of police, and Curly Jett, a former police chief and a valuable liaison to the African-American community. They agreed that a message of hope was needed immediately. Campana contacted all the media outlets in the area and informed them of a news conference on Sunday night at the City Hall Conference Room. Over 200 people crowded into that conference room designed to hold half that number. Though he had a prepared speech, he decided to simply speak from his gut, telling the frightened citizenry that he would take aggressive action against crime. It has been an ongoing action, and as we all know, crime in Williamsport has not disappeared. Yet at a time of the rising opioid epidemic and all the crime inherent to it, Williamsport has seen steady declines in the crime rate for the past twelve years, with 2018 actually marking a 15 percent decrease. As all candidates, Gabe Campana brings along some extra baggage with his candidacy. His ongoing struggles with the City

Council reached a point where they endorsed an initiative to change the city charter to eliminate the office of mayor! Campana was never afraid to try something new – like outdoor hockey on a baseball field in November. There was a sell-out crowd at Bowman Field in November of 2012 as the Williamsport Outlaws Hockey Team brought professional hockey to the city. However, they only played one season and then went bankrupt, and stuck the city with some bills that took some time to clear up. And there was a very messy, public divorce proceeding with his wife Sonia which involved numerous accusations made against him, not one of which was ever substantiated. He has joint custody of his five children. Gabe Campana has stated that he is running for the office of County Commissioner with a commitment to cutting taxes, lowering crime, promoting economic opportunity, and encouraging more regional cooperation. He knows that county government is large, but he brings to the table the experience of managing a cabinet of twelve department heads, which employed 218 employees over a three-term tenure. To some degree, it makes perfect sense that Gabe Campana would choose to run to county commissioner, for as Williamsport goes, so goes Lycoming County. When he visits various towns, he is often greeted, “Hey, Mayor!” It is almost as if the county sees him as their mayor. In May we will see if they see him as their county commissioner.

That Group By Scott N. Lowery

T

here has never been a time when so many instant communication options are available for public use. Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube are commonplace. Most everyone shares their personal stories on Facebook and uses the medium to troll for friends, often boasting about how many ‘friends’ they’ve connected with. But in reality, are those ‘friends’ really friends? Forget Wikipedia, the old-fashioned Webster’s Dictionary defines ‘friend’ as “a person whom one knows well and is fond of, an ally, supporter, or sympathizer.” True friends are not made by pressing a button and asking them to like you. The best of friendships withstand the test of time. For the past 45 years, a group of local women has shared a friendship bond that truly defines Webster’s rationale and far exceeds even their wildest expectations that sprung out of a 1973 tailoring class at the former Williamsport Area Community College. On a Thursday evening 45 years ago three South Williamsport women, Mandy Feinberg, Flicka Losch, and Jean Lowery began a life-long friendship that has since grown to include South Siders Ellie Peck and Carol Waltz, Williamsport’s Sharon Stout, Loyalsock’s Marcia Campbell, Montoursville’s Nancy Celline and Montgomery’s Patti Stover.

Every year since the group, with a few changes in participating members, gather every other Thursday night at the rotating homes of its membership. While the women share a common interest in fabrics and sewing, it is the friendship and conversation that has strengthened the bond they share. While all but Lowery (a seamstress with Timeless Interiors and Furniture) and Waltz (an organist at Messiah Lutheran Church) are retired, the women’s professional backgrounds are varied. Stout and Losch were teachers, Peck, a nurse, Celline worked as a dental assistant and in retail, Campbell was involved in banking and financial aid at Penn College, Feinberg worked in the insurance industry and at AAA and Stover was a supervisor in the penal system. Between them, they have 22 children, 45 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild — giving plenty of fodder for conversation and picture-sharing. Reflecting upon that 1977 beginning none of the three ‘group founders’ gave much thought to what might follow in the years ahead. “When we first got together we always hoped our relationship would grow, but we didn’t think a lot about the future,” Losch reflected. “We were young and just beginning families, and that was all we really thought about. In those earlier days, we made clothes for our kids, and I

even made a few leisure suits for Joe (husband Joe Losch) to wear to work. I have pictures that are now pretty funny to look at.” “The three of us signed up for that course back in 1973 to learn something new. We all sewed, but we were eager to learn more about tailoring,” Lowery added. “For me, I took that class to get out of the house” Feinberg confessed. “It gave me a chance to get ‘That Group’ members are – seated: Pattie Stover and out of the house and Mandy Feinberg. Standing: Marcia Campbell, Nancy have Ed (husband Ed Celline, Flicka Losch, Ellie Peck, Carol Waltz, Sharon Feinberg) watch the kids. Stout and Jean Lowery. When that class was over, all the birthday and anniversary parties I thought what are we going to do now? So we decided to keep that we have shared over the years. We’ve getting together. Since we began going to also had grandmother showers when each the class on Thursday, that was the day we one of us became grandmothers.” For Peck, another sewing convert, the picked to meet, and now we’ve been doing that every other Thursday for the past 45 collective talents of the women have created so many memories. years.” “When I joined the group I learned a lot The following year the group began to about sewing because I didn’t do much of grow as Waltz joined their ranks. “I’m not a sewer, but they let me join that. But it has been the friendship. These anyway,” Waltz added. “Our kids were all women have all been like sisters to me. “We’ve done a lot of really neat things, pretty much the same age, and we had a lot in common through our children’s but one thing that is very special to me is activities. There have been a lot of great the quilts that we’ve made for each of our memories, but I really enjoyed the children when they got married. It was a progressive dinner parties that we used to labor of love for all of us, and it created do when we would go house-to-house and a very special keepsake for our children.” In 1976 Marcia Campbell came on board

“You can complain and nobody takes it personally. We can vent about our jobs, our husbands, our children. There has always been a camaraderie that allows us to share things in our lives. I think that has been very important to all of us. We’ve always been there for each other, and you can always count on each other for help.” Feinberg agreed stating, “What has been so special about this group over the years, aside from all the sewing, we’ve shared so many things together. As the years passed the sewing took a back seat because we are such a core group. The friendship is the bond, and we are all like a support group to one another.” Celline’s association with the group dates back to 1982 making her the ‘rookie’ member. “It’s just been terrific. All these years later, when you look back and see the pictures and think about how many years we’ve shared, the wonderful things that have happened and the sorrows that we’ve all experienced and made it thru with each other’s help. I’m so blessed to have been a part of this group. It is really difficult to explain how I feel and what it has meant to me.” Although ‘conversation’ has gradually out-lapped sewing Celline calls herself ‘one of the rare ones.’ “I still sew. I bring something to every Thursday meeting to work on. Over the years we have learned different things about sewing from one another and

and somewhat unwillingly became the group’s historian. “I became the group historian mainly because nobody else wanted to do it. I had all the photos we had taken so I just dug in and it took me a couple of years to create a history for all of us to enjoy. Forty-five years is a long time to be with the same group of friends. It is really impressive to have eight good friends because a lot of people don’t have that in their lives. There are a lot of things to remember, but it has been the laughter we share, especially when you look back at these old photos and see the way we dressed and the things we’ve done over the years.” Operating for many years without a name it was an oft-repeated comment that has since stuck as their calling card. “Often when meeting others in the community our group became a topic of discussion,” Feinberg explained. “Many of us heard the same thing as folks would refer to us as being a member of ‘That Group.’ The moniker stuck and that is how most folks now refer to us.” While they have a name, they don’t operate with many rules. Their gatherings allow for interruptions at any time they want. The subject can be changed at any time, and everybody follows right along. What has been a constant is a lifetime of fun together. For Lowery, who along with Stout operated a business together (Drape & Dress) for several years, friendship has been the most important thing.

THAT GROUP although some of the members don’t sew that much anymore those things we have created have produced lasting memories for all of us.” For Stout, the thoughtfulness of That Group after her husband (John) had taken a new job in Mechanicsburg, is something she has long remembered. “I was pregnant with our third daughter (Laura), and we had moved to Mechanicsburg area. The group got together, and they all drove down so that we could have one of our Thursday meetings at my house. It was the most wonderful thing that they would travel that far to see me and keep me as part of the group.” “With these very special women, there has been so much friendship and loyalty. John would like to move to Florida (where they spend the winter), but I can’t leave my friends. They are there for you through thick and thin, and I’ve shared things with them that I’ve never told anyone else. It’s a super friendship, and it is wonderful.” Unlike the other eight members of the group, Stover began her second association in 2005 after having been a member from 1974 to 1982 when work responsibilities make it difficult for her to stay involved. Despite the passage of time not much has changed in her mind. “I haven’t noticed much difference when I came back, except we’re all older,” said

Stover with laughter. “One thing I did notice is that this second time around there is a lot less sewing and a lot more conversation going on. Perhaps we could qualify for a production of ‘the housewives of Williamsport.’ It has just been a great opportunity to get together and share what is going on in our lives.” Even when they are not together, they’ve shared a ‘travel bond’ from various trips each of them has made. It all began when one of them brought back pencils from a vacation spot. Since then the tradition has grown to the point the women have pencil collections numbering in the hundreds marking the trips they have individually taken. “We are all blessed by what we’ve been able to share,” Losch stressed. “They are always there at any time. All you have to do is make a call or say something at a time of need, or if you just want to share some good news. We’ve celebrated children with showers, their graduations and weddings, milestone anniversaries, special occasion parties and just the opportunities to be together for no special reason at all. We can act silly and have fun.” For 45+ years their lives have been enriched by a friendship bond not experienced by many. There are numerous groups and associations but ‘That Group’ is truly something very special. It has withstood the test of time!

“Will they like me? Oh, I hope that they like me!” Montana’s eyes seem to be saying. The sweetheart was part of an investigation regarding abandonment and was brought to the shelter this past fall. She has syrupy-sweet eyes and walks very well on a leash. The smart girl knows “sit, shake,” and “stay.” She prefers the single life and will do best as the only dog in the household. She enjoys people and playing, especially tug of war and with a squeaky ball. She can’t wait to meet you in Kennel 56.

Sonny is a 7 month old ray of sunshine in our lobby. He was surrendered to the shelter with his two brothers when their owner felt that he had too many animals. With his soft little black nose and ears, he will make an adorable pet. He looks so cute when he sleeps, stretching way out and tucking in his little paws. At just seven months old, Sonny is full of zest and has high hopes of finding his perfect forever home for the rest of his life!

Living-Donor Liver Transplant: Frequently Asked Questions Swaytha Ganesh, MD Medical Director, UPMC Living Donor Program

W

ith close to 14,000 people on the liver transplant waiting list, the wait for a transplant may take years. Despite increased awareness of organ donation and the pressing need for donors, people with end-stage liver disease continue to die

while on the waiting list because an appropriate match wasn’t found in time. As a result, living donation has become a powerful, life-saving option for patients on the waiting list. During a living-donor liver transplant, a portion of a healthy living donor’s liver is removed and used to replace the recipient’s damaged liver. While recovery times varies for each patient, the liver will regenerate in both the donor and the recipient in about three months.

However, for patients on the waiting list and potential donors, living donation may seem overwhelming and many patients have questions about the process before getting started. For the Living-Donor Liver Transplant Recipient: How do I know if I am eligible to receive a liver transplant? Patients with end-stage liver disease, who no longer see results with medical therapy, may be eligible for a liver transplant. Candidates for a liver transplant will undergo an extensive pre-transplant evaluation to ensure that a liver transplant is the appropriate treatment for them. What are the benefits of a living donor transplant? Living-donor liver transplants offer

many life-saving advantages for patients with end-stage liver disease including: • Reduced time spent on the liver transplant waiting list • Improved outcomes compared to deceased-donor liver transplants • Quicker recovery time How do I find a living donor? Identifying a suitable living donor is often the most challenging part of the living donor transplant process. While living donors do not have to be related, the donor is often someone that the patient already knows. To find a living donor, people should start by simply sharing their story and raising awareness of their need for a transplant. Donors are often found through: • Social Media

• Be in good general health with no history of HIV, pulmonary hypertension, liver disease (including cirrhosis and hepatitis B or C), active cancers, or other significant diseases involving the lung, heart, or kidney How much of my liver is removed? The percentage of the liver that is removed from the donor depends on the age and size of the person receiving the transplant. Typically, with adult-toadult donation, about 50 to 60 percent of the liver is removed from the donor and transplanted into the recipient. If the recipient of the transplant is a child,

about 25 percent of the donor’s liver is removed. How long does it take for a donor to recover from a transplant? Once donors are discharged from the hospital, they typically return to their normal daily activities, including showering and getting dressed, within about one week. Most donors can return to work within six to 12 weeks; after three months, donors tend to be back to their pre-donation level of health. If you have been diagnosed with liver disease or are considering becoming a living donor, visit UPMC.com/Living-

DonorLiver to learn more about living donation. Dr. Ganesh is renowned for her clinical expertise in treating a wide range of patients with liver disease and is committed to raising awareness of living-donor liver transplantation. Her areas of research include evaluating patients with liver disease, assessing their eligibility for living donor surgery, managing patients on the waiting list, and developing disease management protocols in post-liver transplant patients with metabolic syndrome, hyperlipidemia, and systemic hypertension.

hether you are going to be hunting on public or private property this spring, and whether you are hunting at an old familiar haunt or trying out a new location, here are some tips to guide you through to a more successful spring season in the big woods of northcentral Pennsylvania. Pre-season Preparation: One of the greatest keys to being successful in putting a spring gobbler in your gamebag is the work you do before the season even opens. In particular, I am referring to preseason scouting. Even throughout the winter, knowing the location of turkeys is important. Yes, they will move and disburse from their wintering areas, but keeping tabs on their whereabouts from the post-fall season until just before the beginning of the spring season will help predict where your best set-up may be come opening day. Now, as the last grip of winter has given way to the warmer days of spring, you should be spending as much time as

possible walking through your favorite hunting areas, looking for signs and listening for the first gobbles of the season. Spring seeps and early runoff areas are great spots to located signs of recent activities by turkeys that may be traveling through your woods and stopping there in search of insects and soft, new shoots. After the sparse availability of food throughout the winter months, flocks will travel miles in search of food, and will often leave behind large plots of woods that are heavily scratched from their searching for and feeding on leftover acorns and maple seeds, as well as cherry and grape seeds. Concentrate your time in forested areas that are abundant in oaks, particularly white oaks, and on hillsides and bottoms where grapevines are located. As you travel along abandoned logging roads and visit openings along these roadways, be alert for droppings and for scrape marks in the dirt from the wingtips of old Toms as they strut for their harem of hens. once the season opens. Here’s a great example of why. Four years ago, while the spring gobbler season was still two weeks away, I accompanied a friend on a pre-season scouting trip. Not once, but three times as we would approach a new area, he would get out his trusty box call and roll out a series of yelps in hopes for some kind of response from a nearby Tom. And not once, but all three times, we got the same results. My friend would make the series of yelps, then pause five minutes, then play out a second series of yelps. If there was no return call from a gobbler, he would immediately move on. Now, here’s the kicker. Each of the three times, as we began to walk to a new location, within 100 yards, we would flush a gobbler! Yep, every time he called, the birds responded by coming to us, but they did so silently. Sure, we had located three different gobblers, but more importantly, we had educated all of them to be more wary next time when responding to a call. If you must use a call of some kind, use a locator call, such as a crow call or owl call. You may or may not locate a gobbler this way, but at least you won’t risk educating him to your presence and alerting him to the calls of a hunter.

The most important things to carry with you are a good pair of binoculars, and especially if you are in a location that is new to you, a hand-held GPS can be invaluable. As you slip through the woods looking for turkeys or any related signs of their activities, binoculars will help you spot turkeys before they spot you. After all, the last thing you want to do is alert them to your presence and begin to put pressure on them before the season even opens. By walking the ridges and glassing over the sides to the benches below, you will frequently see turkeys loafing along before they have the opportunity to catch your movement. The GPS can quickly and accurately pinpoint where you have seen turkeys, designate a location to begin your route for hunting, or mark a location of a superior vantage point where you can sit and glass for turkeys. This handheld device can also direct you via the shortest direction back to your vehicle if you get turned around or darkness begins to fall. Silence is Golden! Leave your turkey calls at home! Yes, you heard me right. While I am a big proponent of calling spring gobblers, you should really reserve the calling for

Backyard Birds

W

e usually wait until the bears have gone into their winter dens before we start putting any food out in our bird feeders simply because I’ve lost too many bird feeders to black bears. A few weeks ago my wife decided to fill all the backyard bird feeders and a couple of days later there were birds of all kinds in good numbers where there had been few in the days before. Now I’ll have to admit that I am by no means a dedicated bird watcher, but I do enjoy seeing and trying to identify the different birds and on occasion trying to snap some good photos. Of course, the usual regulars show up-black-capped chickadees, tufted titmouse, cardinals, whitebreasted nuthatches, blue jays, doves, goldfinches, house finch, juncos, and sparrows. Of all the birds out back, the ones that usually catch my attention quicker are the woodpeckers.

Woodpeckers are fairly easy to identify and separate from one another since species markings are so different; the exception to the rule might be the hairy woodpecker and the downy woodpecker. We have seven different species Ken of woodpeckers that are Hunter found in Pennsylvania. The largest woodpecker is the pileated, about the size of a crow with a long neck, black for the most part with a prominent red crest and white wing linings. This woodpecker likes the big woods and doesn’t hang out around birdfeeders, but I did spot one in the large maple tree where our feeders hang. Probably the two most common woodpeckers around feeders are the hairy and downy; as mentioned earlier they can be a little tough to distinguish. The downy is a bit smaller than the hairy, and the bill length is also shorter than the hairy woodpeckers. The downy is more

from our other woodpeckers; mostly brown backs and a red patch on the nape of the neck. They tend to feed on the ground a lot eating ants and other insects. They will eat some types of seeds, fruits, and berries but don’t expect to see them around your feeders in the winter since they usually winter in the southern half of the U.S. Don’t expect to see a red-headed woodpecker this winter either; they tend to winter over in their southern range, but a summer sighting is likely. They are easy to tell apart from the other woodpeckers; the whole head is red with a black back and white wing tips and black tail. And finally, one that I don’t think I’ve ever spotted is the black-backed three-toed woodpecker (I didn’t know there was such a thing). A small woodpecker with a black back and the male has a yellow patch on the crown. They do show up in December, but rarely — I’m still looking. Have fun watching your birdfeeders the rest of the winter; you may even catch sight of an evening grossbeak.

commonly seen and is a frequent visitor to the suet feeders. Both feed on seeds and fruits as well as insects; hence they are often seen at our feeders. A woodpecker that is seldom seen here in the winter is the yellow-bellied sapsucker. As the name implies they drill holes and wait for the sap to run then drink it up, but they will also feed on insects, bark, fruits, and seeds. They have a patch of red on the head, followed by black and white bars, a white belly with a tinge of yellow. They tend to move south in the winter, so a winter sighting is rarer. Another fairly rare visitor here in the winter time is the redbellied woodpecker, but last week I was surprised to see one at one of our feeders. The back of the head is red with a white face and belly with a slight red tinge. These woodpeckers also feed on insects, but they also eat a variety of fruits, nuts, and seeds. They are more common in the southern half of the state but on occasion make an appearance in our area. Flickers are easily distinguished

chances of making the playoffs. “Playoffs? Don’t talk to me about playoffs! You kidding me? Playoffs? I just hope we can win a game,” Mora lamented! As it turned out the Colts did win more games, capping off the season and playoffs by defeating the Chicago Bears 29-17 in the Super Bowl. Regardless of the level of play, having ‘been there and done that’ before provides preparation and experience factors that greatly enhances a team’s confidence. Understanding that a goal strived for all season long can be destroyed in a flash by the playoffs ‘lose and go home reality’ is a powerful motivational tool. In this year’s District Four basketball playoffs the qualification process has taken on a different criterion. Rather than team selection and seeding being based strictly upon win/loss records, strength of schedule has been figured in that takes into consideration what teams they have played rather simply their won/lost record. Congratulations to those teams and athletes that have achieved that November goal of making the playoffs. It is now up to you to see how far the journey will last. For basketball squads, it is all about team achievement. For the wrestlers, it is you against the world. Good luck to all in achieving your dream.

only hard work and commitment that will provide future opportunities to ‘get back to the dance.’ Most likely, somewhere in their preseason talks with their teams, coaches have reminded their senior athletes that this is their last high school goround. They’ve given that talk about how fast the season will go by and to give it their best effort every time they step on the court or mat. While back in November the athlete may have heard the words but not completely grasped the coach’s message, the playoffs have hit, and it is truly now or never. High school graduation is not that far away, and you won’t be receiving that diploma in your high school basketball uniform or singlet. Every sport at every level has playoffs with the overriding purpose of defining an ultimate champion. From high school to the pros that drive and intensity to reach the top rung on the ladder brings with it a type of pressure which some can handle more than others. Back in November 2006, then Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Mora had a meltdown at the microphone during a regular season post-game press conference. A month remained until the playoffs, and his Colts had just lost a game in which his offense had turned the ball over five times. A reporter asked Mora about his team’s

2019 SPOUSAL IMPOVERISHMENT STANDARDS AND WHAT THEY MEAN Annually the Department of Human Services issues financial guidelines for the Community Spouse of a patient residing in a nursing home. Applying for Medicaid long-term care benefits is a complex procedure and extensive assets may be protected but this requires a comprehensive plan designed to maximize the allowances, and utilize other methods to provide for the Community Spouse. Some of the important 2019 standards are: Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance: - $2,057.50. The Community Spouse is permitted unlimited income. If she/he doesn’t earn the minimum it is possible to redirect some of the patient’s income to the Community Spouse. Monthly Housing Allowance: - $617.25. The Community Spouse may receive a housing allowance from the patient’s income. The housing allowance is separate from the monthly maintenance needs allowance and is designed to protect the Community Spouse from impoverishment. Minimum Resource Standard: - $25,284.00. DHS allows married couples to protect 50% of their total resources (plus some valuable exempt resources) or a minimum of $25,284.00. For couples with total resources greater than twice the minimum, 50% is protected up to the Maximum Resource Standard of $126,420.00. The attorneys at Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your resources for a reasonable fee. They are getting all types of advice from all directions. It’s madness. Don’t get me wrong folks. I know that most parents and fans have great intentions, but when we are constantly yelling from the sidelines, this only makes the overall experience less enjoyable. Watch the game, and encourage all of the players and coaches. Encouraging does not mean barking out advice or squawking at the referees. As soon as you stand out from the crowd, you’re doing something wrong. Vent over. Cheers.

you played division 1 ball. I get it, pal. You watch every Duke game on ESPN that doesn’t give you the right to question calls. We need to remember that most of these kids are still in elementary school, and very few will ever play beyond. Keep it fun. Each team usually has one head coach and maybe a few assistants. But when I am in the gym, I hear can 30 or so different people giving instructions. SHOOT TOMMY. PASS TO LAURA. REBOUND SAM. I feel so sorry for these youngsters.

Seniors are Sent Off by Caring Parents As the Regular Season Comes to a Close

A

ny early trip to a pool or gym over the winter season will result in seeing just how much work goes into getting those places ready for games. As teams embark on the final part of the season, it’s easy to look past some of the activities that highlight the final regular season games prior to staring the postseason. One of the best moments all year is when seniors are honored. Every school, every team celebrates the seniors with an annual “Senior Night.” In most cases, the event takes place prior to the game or near the midway point of the meet. It’s a chance to give seniors their moment. In some cases, it’s honoring seniors who have worked their entire career to get to that point. In other cases, it’s merely one final

celebration of a talented athlete as he or she walks into the gym or jumps into the pool one last time. In the case of Lewisburg swimming its Senior Night came almost in the middle of the season due to its lack of a home pool. The seniors were toasted for their accomplishments, but, as is customary in most Senior Nights, the Dragons honored the seniors of Jersey Shore, as well. It was a special moment as seniors from both teams exchanged handshakes and hugs as they were paraded around the pool with parents. The parents for Lewisburg even made up little gift bags for each senior. That included the ones on Jersey Shore’s roster. Moments like that aren’t uncommon as teams progress through the winter season. Gyms and natatoriums are decorated to the

fullest in support of the team and seniors. And it’s not simply limited to just Senior Night. When Ron “CI” Insinger won his 1,000th career game, Brett it was easy to see how Crossley much the school, students, and parents on the team supported him. Walking into the gym early gave every indication something tremendous and meaningful was going to happen. Signs were hanging throughout the hallway and on the walls in the gym. The walls behind the bleachers were filled with balloons and more signs to support the coach and team. That was a special day, but what about those days when something significant happens at the opposition’s gym. That was the case when Sullivan County’s Mykenzie Malacusky was going for her 1,000th career point.

As she inched closer to the accomplishment it was apparent, she was going to cross the number on a court away from home. That didn’t stop Sullivan County fans from filling Montgomery’s gym and celebrating their athlete as she earned a spot in the school’s history books. Nights like Senior Night and accomplishments like Malacusky’s or Insinger’s are ones that should be celebrated, regardless of location. It’s always nicer to have those moments on your home court, but teams have made them work. The team’s closeness is displayed throughout each event as they honor athletes and coaches. Most swimming Senior Nights end with their coach being pushed into the pool. For all the seniors and committed parents who walked that path throughout high school here’s to you. Thanks for all the memorable moments and making home court or pool mean something.

DEMOLITION

“For years my family kept telling me that I needed hearing aids. I am so glad I did. I can now hear my family, the birds, crickets, and tree frogs, which I have not been able to do for years. I chose Artisan Hearing Technologies LLC because their ad appealed to me. My intuition was correct. I immediately felt like Jennifer and I had been friends for years. She and her staff are friendly yet very professional. I was pleased with the price of my hearing aids, and the services that were included. My quality of life has greatly improved! I wish I had gotten them sooner.” - Donna L. Engel
