Socialism - An Evil Veiled Deceptor

S

o let me get this straight…Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, a 77-year-old self-proclaimed socialist, again wants to be the president of the United States of America. His last time out seeking the Democratic nomination I guess he just wasn’t experienced enough at age 73. He needed four more years of seasoning to grow his socialistic ideas, and how they would be great for America. Senator Sanders has struck a chord with younger Americans, who think socialism is some new vogue form of government. They want to get in on the ground floor of Sanders’ great giveaway concept. It’s not about working hard and paying your own way. It’s about asking what your Country can do for you. Free college, free medical insurance, government-provided affordable housing, even a job waiting at the end of the rainbow, it all sounds good. We shouldn’t be surprised. This liberal and socialistic brainwashing have been taught on almost every college campus for decades. It has just been brought to life by Uncle Bernie and his socialistic prodigies since the last presidential election. His star pupil, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, recently being elected to Congress. Who would have ever thought that so many Americans would buy into this poppycock? It has been empowered by the Democratic Party, which would do anything to regain control of the White House and Congress. I stated before the Democratic Party has been hijacked by far left extremist/socialist.

The everyday hard-working Democrats need to stand up and take their party back. Socialism has failed 100% of the time in the history of our world. As is often stated, just take a look at what is happening in Venezuela, a nation that not that long ago had one of the strongest economies in that part of the world. The country has imploded as millions migrate from its borders. Simple things like drinking water, electricity, and basic everyday necessities are unavailable to the masses because of the overwhelming costs created by inflation. This is truly socialism at work. I’ve watched it before during the fall of the Soviet Union, and much of Eastern Europe during the 20th century. Socialism is the twisting of equality into everybody being kept equal no matter of effort. It’s taking away the scoreboard and rewarding participation medals. It’s everybody passes, and those that work harder to get better grades being penalized and kept even with the rank-and-file. It is buying the votes for the support of a form of government based upon the idea everyone will be taken care of. It is the creation of the belief that you have the same rights to everything others have busted their ass for and earned. Socialism is a deadly disease that is sold by those seeking ultimate power with the premise of equality. The truth is, in every instance in history it results in a small percentage becoming very rich in every

way and over 90% of the population living in poverty or below. Socialism discourages competition and encourages incompetency. It destroys selfindependence by creating government dependency. It funnels wealth and power to those presiding Jim over it. It is an evil mirage Webb, Jr. of free and easy that is paid for with the soul of freedom. Just think about it, who is going to pay for all the promises the Bernie Sanders of the world and all the liberal socialistic extremist make? In a system that will just simply eat itself, there is not enough revenue to support socialism no matter how rich a nation is. The next problem is the hard-working carry the non-working, how do you think that’s going to fly in the United States of America once folks figure it out? California is the perfect example of liberalism/socialism gone wild. The state is going to require a federal bailout of unprecedented proportions in the near future. But the leaders of this debacle want to run our Country inside the Washington Beltway. Nancy Pelosi, Maxine Waters, Dianne Feinstein, and presidential candidate Kamala Harris are just a few that come to mind. They need our Country to switch over to a socialistic form of government to take care of the constituents in their home state.

I appeal to the everyday hardworking Democrats to take a look at your party and what is happening. Socialism is not what our forefathers, and those who walked before you, had in mind for our great Nation. Former President Bill Clinton does not fit the democratic ideal for today. He is way too conservative. Former Vice President Joe Biden is too moderate for the current Democratic leadership. Our Nation is the land of opportunity. Americans are hard-working, self-reliant, and generous. We look out for each other and not only help fellow Americans in a time of trouble but also help people around the globe. The world knows this, that’s why everybody is fighting to get in, and nobody is fighting to get out. We do not need the government to take care of us; we need the government to stay the hell out of the way and protect us from those that are a threat to our way of life. To allow our living, breathing, evolving democracy to continue to grow economically and support the world. To protect us from terrorism and nations that want to do us harm, that is our government’s job. The problem in today’s world is our greatest threat has now invaded our government. I have seen the enemy; the enemy is us. All those that believe in socialism should join Uncle Bernie’s Caravan to Venezuela. You can learn firsthand how successful socialism is. A year’s stay is a requirement. No worries, transportation, housing, food and water, education and entertainment will be provided. The first 300 seats will be reserved for members of Congress. God Bless America.

I

am a big proponent of the Red Cross. They have their issues, just like most large non-profits, but I honestly believe that at their core, they just want to help people. I am also a huge proponent of donating blood. It is a simple, easy way to help save lives of people in need. Every eight minutes the Red Cross helps someone in need. Whether it is someone in need of blood, or help after a fire or natural disaster, or a family needing to get in touch with a deployed soldier. The American Red Cross is part of the world’s largest volunteer network found in 187 countries. With the amount of work the Red Cross does globally it can often be mistaken for a government organization, however, that is not the case. They depend on volunteers and through your generosity are able to spend 91¢ out of every dollar donated on humanitarian services and programs. 10 million people learn emergency skills such as CPR through the Red Cross every year. According to redcross.org, “The history of the American Red Cross is inseparable from the history of America itself. Since 1881, American Red Cross members and

We’ve been witness to great tragedy, but more importantly we’ve seen Steph the triumph of the Nordstrom human spirit as people work together to help each other rebuild their lives and communities.” When the U.S. entered WWI, the Red Cross was still in development and finding its paths and programs. That did not deter them from joining the war effort. Shortly after the war began, the American Red Cross dispatched a ship to Europe loaded with medical personnel and supplies. Named the S.S. Red Cross, it was better known as ‘The Mercy Ship.’ It carried 170 surgeons and nurses who were being sent to Europe to provide medical relief to combat casualties on both sides of the war. By the time WWI ended, the Red Cross had established itself as a tour de force organization. It developed strong leadership, a vast membership number, universal recognition, and a broad and distinguished record of service. The American Red Cross entered WWII even before the U.S. In 1939 they began helping civilian victims with relief supplies. In February of 1941 the Red Cross responded to a request by the U.S. government to begin

The Strength of Family Bonds Help Leone Family Manage Through Difficult Situation By Brett R. Crossley

A

ubree Leone never looked at her brother Caleb differently after a debilitating injury during football left him in a coma for weeks. When Caleb awoke, the world was not the same. The injury damaged parts of his brain to the point he would never be the same person again. That didn’t stop his sister from joking with him in the hospital during Thanksgiving this past year. As Aubree smiled and poked her brother with humorous tales, a small smile crept across Caleb’s face. It was the first time since his injury he reacted to somebody around him by mouthing words. The little acknowledgment of his sister’s humor returned a family to normal for that moment, and it meant the world to everybody in the room.

“Thanksgiving break, when she came down, she was joking and was trying to get him to voice,” Danielle said. “She was trying to get him to show Caleb again. Not just the Caleb we were getting used to. Thanksgiving was one of the best times.” One look at either Caleb or Aubree and it is clear to see both of their parents, Jake and Danielle, have raised two very strong people. “I just live my life like nothing ever happened, because Caleb is just the same as always,” Aubree said. “I don’t like to look at it any different. He’s just the strongest person I know.” As the severity of the injury became clear the Leone family knew it was going to be a difficult time for every member of the family. Both Danielle and Jake spent days and nights at the hospital with Caleb, only leaving his side for a quick meal or 30-minute nap. Both parents dedicated them-

to balance the situation with grades and work. Her classmates have supported her, and a few of the football players checked in regularly to see how their teammate has been doing. Jersey Shore’s football team, which rallied around Caleb and his family after the injury, honored its teammate the night it defeated Selinsgrove for the District 4 Championship. As head coach Tom Gravish made his way down the line of players, giving each a gold medal as a display of their accomplishment, Aubree was given Caleb’s as the family looked on from her phone. “Right as everything was going down my daughter facetimed us,” Danielle said. “It was pretty emotional for everyone. The fact she could be there and have his jersey and honor him was the greatest part of the event. They all really wanted to make sure No. 20 was recognized.” Aubree felt the same way as she accepted the championship medal. “It was just awesome I could do that for him,” Aubree said. “It was really overwhelming.”

selves to being with Caleb as he tried to recover in the hospital. As they helped Caleb fight, Aubree, when not on the road visiting Caleb, stepped up to help at home. “It was a lot on her plate,” Danielle said. “She was holding down the fort when we weren’t home. To be 17 and have that much responsibility — it’s not easy. She remains on the honor roll and she’s kept her head on at times better than we’ve been able to.” Aubree has also been with Caleb on the weekends and holidays. When she walked into the room on Thanksgiving, she treated it like any other with her family. That simple act of trying to make the moment seem normal created a special one the family needed after months of being pulled apart. “She came on the weekends to see him when we got to Hershey,” Danielle said. “She really dealt with it well. The way she and Caleb interact is amazing and brings things out in him we don’t get to see. It brings out the whole side of Caleb that you miss. She’s amazing with him.” It’s easy to forget through it all that Aubree is still in high school trying

Danielle, Jake, and Caleb got to see the entire medal ceremony on a cell phone held by one of Aubree’s friends. The moment was emotional, but a few weeks later when PA Football News named Caleb the 2018 Player of the Year it was another level of emotion for everyone. “It was pretty awesome,” Danielle said. “It was the first time since Caleb’s accident that we all saw a genuine smile.” The generosity displayed by former teammates and coaches weren’t just limited to the football team either. Jersey Shore and its surrounding communities have rallied in support of Caleb and his family. On December 20th Caleb was cleared to come home, and once again people and organizations stepped up to help. Adam Alexander and the Andrew’s Special Kids Foundation donated a van for the family to help with transporting Caleb home. It also gave the family a way to get him to and from therapy. “That’s huge,” Danielle said of the van being donated. “They came to-

gether with a van for us so we could bring Caleb home. It’s also how we get him to and from therapy every single day.” The paperwork for the van wasn’t even finished by the time Caleb was ready to come home, but that didn’t matter as Alexander got it ready for the ride home. “Adam Alexander was in touch with my husband before he came home, but they made sure we actually had it to bring him home,” Danielle said. “They made sure it was there to bring him home.” Caleb will continue to be strong and improve, and the Jersey Shore area will continue to support his family. “We pretty much experienced every emotion there is,” Danielle said. “We definitely had to learn how to come together as a unit, because we have some really challenging days. We really have to pull from one another’s strengths. There are some days where one of us is a little stronger than the other, but we are strong as a family.”

ompany I, Twelfth Regiment, accompanied by the Repasz Band, arrived home from Washington, D.C. on a special train at 9:40 o’clock Friday night. The soldiers and musicians were glad to get home, the guardsmen went directly from the Market Street station to the armory and the band paraded down Pine Street to its headquarters in the Lycoming Opera House building, playing a lively march. The trip to Washington for the inauguration of President William Howard Taft was full of trouble and inconvenience from their arrival at the capital until they left Friday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock a heavy rain greeted them upon their arrival Wednesday afternoon and they marched a long distance during the downpour.

During the inaugural parade Thursday afternoon they marched through slush and water for several miles and every member of the local delegation received a thorough foot soaking as the slush was over their shoe tops. It required more than an hour for their special train to leave the Union Station at Washington after the time scheduled for their departure due to the congested traffic on the railroads. After their train got underway the trip was fairly good considering the conditions. Locally, the train service on the Pennsylvania Railroad was about normal Friday and the trains from Baltimore and Washington were beginning to get back somewhere near their normal time. As all the trouble was east of Harrisburg the local effect of the severe storm was not pronounced.

the body, spiritual health is open to interruption from person to person, but we can all use an examination of the soul from time to time. Maybe you’re not really interested in going on a spiritual journey between now and Easter, but be aware that the mind and spirit can overlap, especially when considering temperament and deeply-rooted personality traits. It can be a fine line between having an uncouth habit and the intricate fabric of your character. No matter how you suss it out — Lent can be a time to change your behavior for the better. What I like about Pray As You Go is that is also plays calming music, and the narrators have British accents, both of which I find soothing. In addition to being more prayerful each day during Lent, I’m also trying to learn better ways to deal with stress and anger. You may not be able to change how you instinctively react to outside stressors, but you can choose not to give in to negative thoughts. I find prayer very helpful in that struggle. Others could be helped by exercise or listening to music. The key is to focus on positive and healthy feelings. For the left-brain-side of the mind,

Lent can be a season for learning and organization. Six weeks gives you plenty of time to tackle a new project or learn a new skill. Think of it as a personal challenge, even for something small, like knitting a scarf, clearing out a file cabinet, or signing up for a class you’ve always wanted to take. Set yourself a goal and use Lent to make it happen. For me, I want to read more during Lent. I’m making up a book list and hope to get to the library near my office once a week. Both the walk and the written word will help me de-stress and feel more fulfilled. Having mind, body, and spirit focused intentions this Lent is a tall order. I’ve set up small goals that will help me accomplish the larger holistic Lenten objective, but I’m not going to beat myself up if I start slacking on one of these fronts. Basically, if I get a physical, get some extra prayers in on the weekdays, and read some new books, I’d call that a win. As we approach this transition from winter to spring, whether from a spiritual standpoint, from a health angle, or as a time to take on a new task, use the season of Lent to focus your intentions and strive toward success, however you define it.

“My new forever home is out there somewhere, I just know it!” Mackie, a sweet six-year-old female, is ready for her next adventure: landing a forever home. She is looking for a barn home or a home where she can be an indoor/outdoor cat. She came from a hoarding situation and used to squeeze herself into the back of her cubby to pretend that the world didn’t exist. Now she comes down to chat with us! You can meet her and her kitty friends in our Four Seasons Room.

Nero is a five-year-old male with a heart of gold is hiding behind Nero’s worn exterior. The five-yearold American Pit Bull Terrier-mix was found living in an abandoned building in the woods. It took him awhile to trust again, but his favorite volunteer now describes him as a “fun-loving, boisterous lug” of a pooch. He has been hard at work learning his manners and has a deep and abiding love for playing fetch with tennis balls. He can’t wait to be your squishy new best friend. Come check him out in Kennel 74!

My name is Lucy and I adopted my parents last year in May when they visited the SPCA. I was found on Lycoming Creek Road, lost and pregnant. Some nice person took me to the SPCA. I had my kittens and they were adopted. Then this nice couple came in and I turned on the charm and adopted them. I am an indoor kitty and have the run of the house. My favorite napping spot is on a cat bed next to the fireplace. ~ Submitted by Stan C. from Montoursville.

f there is one hard and fast rule in life, it is that without an education, it is extremely difficult to get a job and make a living. So, what happens to young people who run into obstacles in school and find themselves unable to finish high school? How do they come up with the resources to eventually get a General Equivalency Diploma (GED)? How can they afford job training? Quite frankly, without some help, the future for these young people is very, very bleak. Fortunately, there is help, and it is the YES program administered through the Lycoming-Clinton Counties Commission for Community Action (STEP), Inc. YES stands for Youth Enrichment for Success, and is a 12-to-18 month youth employment and education program. The design of the program is to work towards acquiring a GED, gain employment skills and career experience, and if necessary, receive support and assistance to resolve any barriers that may interfere with achieving these goals.

An individual must be between 16-21 years of age, reside in Lycoming County, and be motivated to work towards education and employment goals. If selected for the program, a family navigator will be assigned, and Phase 1 will begin. This involves a needs assessment, a development of goals, and connection with services that would help with the barriers and goals. Stacy Bower and Miranda Redka are the family navigators for the YES program, and they provide that necessary guidance and support that many of these young people need to get headed in the right direction. If the applicant successfully passes through Phase 1, they go on to Phase 2, where the focus is employment skills.

cies, Alexis was able to get resettled and went back towards working toward her high school diploma. She was able to graduate in July 2017 from Williamsport Area High School and decided to pursue a career in nursing. She received a paid training through Williamsport Home and obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) Certificate. The YES program provided her with a watch, scrubs, and non-slip shoes she needed for her job. Today, Alexis continues to maintain employment and stable housing, successfully completing each of the requirements for the YES program. YES provides a small financial stipend through the program and also assists in needed documents such as photo ID, birth certificate, driver’s education and permit, school supplies, special work clothing, etc. Since June of 2015, 93 youth have successfully participated in the YES program. For those interested in more information or possible participation, go to www.stepcorp.org, click on Community Collaboration Pathway, Youth Enrichment for Success (YES), complete the referral form and email to yesprogram@stepcorp.org. This is where the participant will continue to complete their high school diploma or GED if needed, as well as begin to participate in gaining employment skills and career experience. One example was Janet (not her real name) who was an extremely shy, reserved young lady. She was set up as a job shadow with an organization that worked with small animals. Janet liked working with the animals, and it helped her get out of her shell. She was able to develop people skills and now works at a retail establishment. Some will go into Phase 3, which is technical training. This is where the individual would participate in the technical training of their choice. It would also involve participation in transition-planning services. Alexis Kibler-Russitano (her real name) is a glowing example of dedication and hard work in the midst of adversity. Struggling through high school with a small child, she got involved in the YES program to work on completing high school while developing the parenting skills necessary to care for her newborn. With only a few months remaining of high school, a tragic fire destroyed the family’s house and belongings. With assistance from various community agen-

Additional monetary prizes and incentives sponsored by Larson Design Group, Subaru, Toyota Motor Corporation, and UPMC will be awarded to participating nonprofits throughout the entire event. Easy, On-Demand Dinners

N

early everyone wishes for an extra hour or two in the day. When juggling evenings filled with homework, practices, games and last-minute art projects, even just 60 extra minutes could make the difference in finding time to whip up a dinner you can be proud of. While there’s no changing the fact that there are 24 hours each day, there are some time-saving options for creating family dinners that feel like they’ve come together “on-demand.” Cube, spiralize or pound. No matter what shape you choose, decreasing the thickness of your ingredients is key to helping them cook through quickly. Think chicken breast cut into hunks for kabobs, thinly sliced Korean-style beef or zucchini turned into “zoodles.” With increased surface area and high heat, you may be surprised at just how quick you can have food on your plate. Homemade tasting, on-demand sides. Rounding out your menu with easy-tomake sides can be a huge time-saver, and you sacrifice nothing if you rely on choices that deliver the same taste as if you had prepared them from scratch. For example, Idahoan Mashed Potatoes are real potatoes, real easy, delivering homemade taste ondemand. Made from 100 percent real Idaho potatoes, they can be served in just minutes and offer high-quality taste and texture, just like homemade. The variety of flavors are perfectly blended with real cheese and authentic seasonings, and options include Buttery Homestyle, Roasted Garlic,

Cheddar & Sour Cream, Loaded Baked and more, so you can find a match for just about any meal. Marinate meat before freezing. A rich marinade can add delightful flavor to a wide range of proteins, but marinating a dish takes time. Speed up the clock by marinating meat ahead of time before freezing it. Then, on a busy weeknight, all you have to do is thaw and cook for a wellseasoned meal in minutes. Pre-cut veggies cut down prep. Prepping vegetables is sometimes half the battle. From washing produce to peeling and chopping, precious time sometimes passes before ingredients even begin cooking. Washed and pre-chopped veggies are ready to go right in the pan so you can enjoy fresh flavors almost instantly. Rethink leftovers. The remains from a delicious dinner shouldn’t go to waste, and they don’t have to if you repurpose them into another meal. For example, you could reimagine grilled or roasted chicken into soft tacos or a protein-rich salad. Or you can add protein and seasonings to leftover pasta for a whole new meal. If you find the fridge full of odds and ends, make it a reheat-and-eat, quick smorgasbord meal. After all, what often matters most is that everyone eats a nourishing meal together, whether the same exact foods are on their plate or not. It can be even better when this nourishing meal comes together in the blink of an eye. (Family Features & Idahoan)

The TRIANGLE Italian tradition continues , along with great wet-aged steaks at family friendly prices

Children’s Workshop on Art and Architecture to be held at the Taber Museum

W

illiamsport: The Thomas T. Taber Museum of the Lycoming County Historical Society, 858 West Fourth Street, will be holding the third in a series of workshops for children on Sunday, March 10, 2019, from 1:00pm until 4:30pm. The workshop is free and open to the public, but pre-registration is strongly requested. The costs of the workshop are underwritten by a grant from the Free and Accepted Masons. Guests are reminded that Sunday is the first full day after turning our clocks ahead one hour the night before. The Children’s Workshop will be a study of architecture and art. A short lecture on the history of the diverse architecture that exists throughout the County will begin

the session. This will be followed by a photographic look at some of the great architecture within Millionaires’ Row. Rita Bower and Steve Bower will then lead an artistic endeavor. Utilizing cardboard, black paint and sketches, the child will construct a 3-D ‘line drawing’ of the building. A snack is offered during the afternoon. The Workshops will continue, approximately once a month, and will explore various aspects of history and culture as related to Lycoming County. The Workshops will be open to children of any age and are free of charge. An application is available at the Front Desk or online at the museum’s website www.tabermuseum.org. To register please call Kahlie DeHotman, Boutique manager, at 570322-4637 ext. 121. “Thanks to Cinderella’s Closet, young women in Lycoming County who otherwise could not afford to go or would have difficulty affording to go to prom now have that option,” said DeHotman. The cost to receive the royal treatment is between $10 and $15, which benefits

the YWCA’s two programs Wise Options and Liberty House. Wise Options offers free services to all people who are survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault or other violent crimes. Liberty House is a program for women and women with children who are experiencing homelessness. There will be racks filled with modern gowns of all sizes so every girl has the opportunity to find she can feel beautiful and confident. Every participant will be paired with a fairy godmother who is a volunteer who will walk them through the process. “Our fairy godmothers… want nothing more than to make each young lady feel

like the princess she is while finding her dream dress,” she said. “They will help our Cinderellas search the racks for gown options, set up the fitting rooms, offer kind feedback and encouragement, answer questions and assist with check out.” We are accepting donations of gowns, which can be brought to the YWCA during our business hours on MondaysFridays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. or Saturdays 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We are always in need of plus size and very small sized dresses. For regular updates on Cinderella’s Closet, please follow our Facebook event. To learn more about the YWCA please visit www.ywcawilliamsport.org.

WAHS Sophomore Selected to Perform with Carnegie Hall’s National Youth Orchestra of the US

A

t just 15 years old, Williamsport Area High School sophomore Michael Fisher is already a veteran to the music scene. For more than a decade, the teen violinist has risen to become a recognized musician. Now, this summer, he’ll unleash his talent across Europe alongside his peers as a member of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute’s National Youth Orchestra of

the United States (NYO-USA). From among a nation of talented high school musicians, Fisher is one of only about 100 to get selected into the prestigious youth orchestra. “I feel extremely honored,” he said, adding that this is the highest musical honor a high school student can earn. “I am so very excited to be able to have the experience of being surrounded by the kids my age who love music the way I do.”

Each summer, Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute brings together the brightest young players from across the country to form the NYO-USA, a free program for all participants. This year, the orchestra will travel across Europe with conductor Sir Antonio Pappano, performing works by Strauss, Prokofiev, and Berlioz and joined by mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in select cities. The tour kicks off with concerts at Tanglewood and Carnegie Hall, followed by stops in Great Britain, the Netherlands and Germany. Starting at just 4 years old, Fisher, the son of Don and Kristin Fisher, began training with Pat Thayer before moving on to Penn State’s James Lyon and WAHS orchestra instructor Matthew Radspinner. Under their guidance, Fisher has had the opportunity to perform at camps, for organizations, and in a number of Pennsylvania Music Educators Association (PMEA) festivals. Most recently, he finished first at the PMEA district and regional orchestra, during which he also was named concertmaster. “These three (instructors) ... are the ones who have trained me to get to where I am now, and for that I give them my everlasting gratitude.” Fisher said it was Radspinner who presented him with the NYO-USA opportunity and helped him record his NEW Lenovo V330 Notebook - Intel i5-7200u 2.50ghz CPU

He’s also a member of the cross country and track teams. In the community, he performs with his church choir and has been requested to play at weddings, funerals and parties, and plays with the Williamsport Symphony Orchestra on occasion. s you age, it is important to stay socially active as well as physically active. However, the older you get, the fewer opportunities you have for socialization and your desire to stay physically fit often decreases. Several studies have shown seniors who regularly engage in social activities have lower levels of loneliness, depression, and cognitive decline. Increased socialization can also have a significant effect on physical health—lowering blood pressure and risk for developing chronic disease while boosting your

immune system. While an active lifestyle is important for health and happiness, adding regular exercise can help you achieve a higher quality of life. Regular exercise is shown to lessen the pain associated with arthritis, improve strength and balance, improve sleep, and lower your risk for heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. If you exercise with friends or in group classes, you combine the best of both worlds. Remaining active both socially and physically, creates a sense of belonging and makes you feel more connected to the world.

2019 SPOUSAL IMPOVERISHMENT STANDARDS AND WHAT THEY MEAN Annually the Department of Human Services issues financial guidelines for the Community Spouse of a patient residing in a nursing home. Applying for Medicaid long-term care benefits is a complex procedure and extensive assets may be protected but this requires a comprehensive plan designed to maximize the allowances, and utilize other methods to provide for the Community Spouse. Some of the important 2019 standards are: Minimum Monthly Maintenance Needs Allowance: - $2,057.50. The Community Spouse is permitted unlimited income. If she/he doesn’t earn the minimum it is possible to redirect some of the patient’s income to the Community Spouse. Monthly Housing Allowance: - $617.25. The Community Spouse may receive a housing allowance from the patient’s income. The housing allowance is separate from the monthly maintenance needs allowance and is designed to protect the Community Spouse from impoverishment. Minimum Resource Standard: - $25,284.00. DHS allows married couples to protect 50% of their total resources (plus some valuable exempt resources) or a minimum of $25,284.00. For couples with total resources greater than twice the minimum, 50% is protected up to the Maximum Resource Standard of $126,420.00. The attorneys at Greevy & Shoemaker and their Certified Medicaid Planner™ are dedicated to working for you and your family to preserve your resources for a reasonable fee. healthy as you age and live your best life, follow these seven tips: Take trips with friends. If you enjoy traveling find a local travel agent who plans group tours or travel with a friend. Plan regular coffee dates. Catching up with family and friends can be as easy as meeting at a local coffee shop once a month. Join a gym or attend an exercise class. When you can combine exercise and socialization, it is a winwin situation. Nurture your existing social networks. It is important to make sure you regularly engage with your current social networks, including family, friends, church, and senior centers. Join local clubs. You can check your local senior center for hobby clubs including a book club, garden club, and writing club. Volunteer in your community. Many organizations need volunteers, including hospitals, libraries, or your local historical society. Go back to work. Find a part-time

job doing something you love. Depending on your circumstances, you may find it difficult to socialize or stay active. Senior living may be an option for you. It allows you to live surrounded by people in a similar situation. Senior living facilities often have a busy calendar of social events to keep you engaged and energized, and a common dining room so you can eat with other residents and develop new friendships. It is a myth that growing older means you aren’t going to feel good anymore. Sure, you will go through physical changes, but if you care for your body and your mind you can enjoy life to the fullest. And, it’s never too late to start making friends. Anne E. Holladay is the vice president for operations, UPMC Senior Communities. Anne is a certified nursing home administrator and has regional responsibility for Senior Communities facilities in northcentral Pa. healthcare, the National Institute on Aging advises people to ask their physicians these questions when being prescribed a new medicine. • What is the name of the medicine, and why am I taking it? • Which medical condition does this medicine treat? • How many times a day should I take the medicine, and at what times should I take it? • If the prescription instructions say the medicine must be taken “four times a day,” does that mean four times in 24 hours or four times during the daytime? • How much medicine should I take? • Should I take the medicine on its own or with food? Should I avoid certain foods and beverages when taking this medicine? • How long will it take this medicine to work? • Will this medicine cause problems if I am taking other medicines? • Can I safely operate a motor vehicle while taking this medication?

hough few people may want to take medicine each day, prescription drugs prolong lives and help people manage conditions that might otherwise make it difficult to live life to the fullest. A 2017 survey from Consumer Reports found that 55 percent of people living in the United States take a prescription medicine. The survey also found that those who take prescription drugs use an average of four such medications. That figure might alarm some people, especially aging men and women whose bodies might be more susceptible to conditions that are often treated with medication. There’s no denying that prescription drugs can save lives. But men and women have a right to explore their options when doctors prescribe them medications, and asking the right questions when doctors suggest medication can help men and women decide if prescription medicine is their best option. What should I do if I have a problem? • Will I need a refill, and how do I arrange that? When discussing medications with a physician, it’s imperative that men and women be forthcoming about any other medicines they might be taking

under the guidance of other doctors. In addition, men and women should tell their physicians about any overthe-counter medicines or vitamins and supplements they are taking. Sharing such information can prevent potentially serious complications from arising. Medicine saves lives every day. Smart patients can help medicine do its job by learning about their medications and discussing them openly and honestly with their physicians.

eniors are often targeted by criminals. Though many criminals target seniors from afar via telephone or internet scams, criminals seek to enter seniors’ homes. The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers that, between 2003 and 2013, the ratio of property crime to violent crime was higher for the elderly and persons between the ages of 50 and 64 than it was for younger persons between the ages of 25 and 49.

Home security is important for people of all ages, but especially so for seniors and aging individuals living alone. By following certain safety tips and developing a home security plan, seniors can feel safer at home. • Lock windows and doors. It may seem like common sense, but failure to repeatedly lock windows and doors can, and often does, give burglars easy entry into the home. • Think about a smart doorbell.

Technology now enables doorbells to provide a video feed to a person’s smartphone or tablet over Wi-Fi. This allows residents to see who is at the door and speak to this person without having to open the door. Some products like Ring® will even register motion activity and record short videos from outside of the house. • Don’t share or leave keys. Avoid leaving keys under a mat or in a flowerpot. Others may be watching your actions and gain access to your home while you are away. • Ask for ID. When service people or other individuals come to the door, verify their credentials by asking to see some identification. • Get a home security system. The best protection against burglars is a home security alarm, states HomeSecurityResource.org. Such an alarm often deters burglars from breaking in. • Install a lockable mailbox. Locked mailboxes restrict access to sensitive information, such as bank account numbers, sent in the mail. Make sure

retirement checks or other payments are deposited directly into bank accounts instead of having them sent by check. • Use home automation. Home automation, or a “smart home,” can be utilized to turn on lights, set the thermostat, lock doors, and much more. • Adopt a dog. Dogs can be an asset to seniors. Dogs provide companionship and can bark or alert seniors if someone is around or inside of the home. Home security is serious business for seniors who are vulnerable to criminals.

very year an untold number of Pennsylvania hunters cross our borders to spend time and money pursuing their passion for hunting outside our state. Some of these individuals travel to western states to hunt for elk, mule deer, mountain lions or other game that is simply not available here. Often, several hunters will travel with their buddies as they work with a licensed outfitter, ride on horses to remote destinations and set up tent camps where they will remain for a week or more pursuing big game. Annual vacation time will be scheduled for such a trip, and while costs will be high, none in the group would give up going on such an adventure where memories of a lifetime will be created. But, not every hunter has the time or finances to take one of these western trips. Most, instead, are dedicated and passionate hunters who love to stay right here and enjoy pursuing whitetail deer, black bear, turkeys, and various small game. Most, also, are family men and women who often in today’s world struggle to make ends meet, hold down

multiple jobs and thus have limited time to spend raising their children and enjoying the wonderful hunting opportunities our own state offers. There is another category of hunters here in Pennsylvania. It consists of those who eagerly travel to adjoining states to pursue deer, bear, turkeys and the various species of small game. They are the ones who cross our borders to hunt because they simply are denied the chance to hunt right here in their own state — on Sundays. Time is a limiting factor for most of us. If it is not the parents working multiple jobs, it is the kids being active in numerous after-school activities, some of which occur on Saturdays as well. Thus, for an increasing number of folks who would love to spend time in the hunting woods, the inability to do so on any given Sunday is an unacceptable restriction. The time is overdue to right this wrong! On the evening of Sunday, February 24, dozens of hunting advocates met at the Nippenose Tavern to discuss the ongoing issue of finally permitting Sunday hunting in Pennsylvania. At this meeting, there was excitement in the air as the discussion turned to a recently introduced bill, Senate Bill 147, which will pave the way to finally allowing Sunday hunting in our state. Senate Bill 147 was introduced in session on February 4, 2019, by State Senators Laughlin, Brewster, Street and Yaw. Yes, our local Senator Gene Yaw was one of those who introduced the bill. The Pennsylvania legislature has begun the process, and it is now up to

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

Rabbits and Squirrels Anyone?

T

he rabbit bolted out of the brush a good 50 yards in front of me and out across the icy snow to a tree line; it never stopped until it reached the heavy brush at the far end. The rabbit was so far out in front, I never even bothered to raise my 20-gauge pump. The rest of the day my hunting buddy George and I experienced that same scenario over and over again — too far away on a dead run for a decent shot. Even the beagles had a tough time picking up a scent, and we ended the day with the rabbits: six and the hunters: zero. In years past, we have had some productive days afield, but this was

not one of them. We both agreed though that it was still good to get out to enjoy some good old-fashioned small game hunting even though we had nothing to add to the freezer. Hunting rabbits and squirrels was my introduction to hunting. I remember well my first successful hunt as a young man; it wasn’t much, but that first squirrel is probably what led to my lifelong pursuit of an assortment of wild game over the years that followed. In those early years, I didn’t have a dog, but that didn’t keep me from chasing rabbits either. I would often walk a friend’s fields and fencerows

and kick brush piles, and it wasn’t unusual to be rewarded with a limit of four rabbits. I suspect that chasing after rabbits and squirrels is something a lot of hunters my age did when they were younger. Granted, they are not as glamorous or alluring as Ken wild turkeys and deer, but Hunter they were still great fun to hunt, and I still enjoy an occasional outing for these small game animals even now. The fact is, however, less and less people are interested in pursuing small game animals

— especially squirrels and rabbits. The numbers showing the decline in small game hunting is quite surprising. According to Pennsylvania Game Commission surveys, the number of rabbit hunters has fallen by 81 percent since 1995. The number of squirrel hunters has dropped by 69 percent, and 57 percent of the hunters have stopped hunting pheasants. Now I realize that the drop in pheasant hunters has a lot to do with the disappearance of our once abundant wild pheasant population and fewer rabbits in some areas may also contribute to lower hunter numbers as well. The decline in those hunting squirrels, however, is not likely a consequence of lower squirrel numbers. So why are less young people

Certainly, predation is high on the list, and we do have a growing population of predators like coyotes, bobcats, feral cats, hawks and even eagles. I suppose the topic of less interest in small game hunting would not be complete without also mentioning a change in young people’s thinking and orientation today. Certainly, there is far greater involvement in social media and all the technical paraphernalia that comes with it. It’s also true that young people today have far more opportunities to hunt the more glamorous game like deer and turkeys than we did in the past. After all, if your first hunt was a deer hunt and you killed a dandy buck why bother with a little gray squirrel?

45 • Webb Weekly March 6, 2019

interested in hunting small game these days? I suppose there are a number of reasons for the decline, including the loss of suitable habitat due to development, posted land that can no longer be hunted, schedules that are too busy to allow time for hunting, young people’s overabundant sports schedules and a number of other reasons. Certainly having less game to hunt also adds to the decline in interest, such as our pheasant situation. Even grouse seem to be in somewhat of a population crisis. The decline in the population of certain game species is always an interesting topic. A number of factors probably contribute to lower populations of any given species besides those already mentioned.

In attendance at the umpire’s meeting was Bryce Brewer, the subject of my December 12 column in this publication. Brewer recently returned from participation in the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School in Daytona, Florida, calling his time at the school “an awesome experience, one of the best times of my life.” Brewer will continue his quest to become a Major League umpire by umpiring this year in the Northwest League in Minnesota. The league is a Division 1 college summer league played May through July. Before he leaves for Minnesota Brewer will be umpiring local high school games. A reminder for those purchasing new baseball equipment for the coming season – MAKE SURE the purchases

you make comply with the various requirements and specifications of the PIAA, Little League and other youth leagues. Equipment is not cheap, so precaution is urged when making those purchases. When attending high school baseball games fans should be aware of the pitching restrictions now being used. Those pitch limits include: 0-25 pitches – no rest required; 26-50 pitches – 1-day rest; 51-75 pitches – 2 days rest; 76100 pitches – 3 days rest. In addition, a pitcher cannot pitch on more than two consecutive days. The PIAA baseball pitching rule restriction has been amended “to permit a pitcher reaching the maximum pitch

count for any level of rest during an atbat, to continue to pitch to that batter, or any substitute for that batter, until such batter is put out or reaches first base, or until a third out has been made prior to the end of that at-bat. The pitcher will be credited with the maximum number of pitches for that level.” “Each team will designate a pitch counter, with the home team being the official counter. The pitch counters are to confer with each other frequently. If there is a discrepancy, the home book is to be used.” Note: There is no pitch restriction placed upon softball pitchers. teams has resurfaced as an assistant coach with the Spartans this season. At the aforementioned baseball umpires meeting the 25 chapter members were advised of a PIAA directive aimed at curbing instances of disruptive fan behavior at sporting events. Prior to each PIAA contest, officials remind coaches of the sportsmanship code pertaining to player, coach and umpire deportment. After a quick climb, I found myself in a familiar surrounding. I’ve probably been to Jacoby a dozen or so times. SPN’s 30 for 30 recently aired “The Last Days of [Bobby] Knight,” about the brilliant, successful, but now muchmaligned former basketball coach of Indiana University, for verbally and physically abusing some of his players. While no doubt historically accurate, the film I believe, over-accentuated the negative at the expense of the many positive things Bobby Knight brought to the University and to the game itself. As a former player and Coach, in no way do I condone such abuse, but I have to wonder if today, we have not let the pendulum swing too far the other way. When teams come out for warm-ups or during a game disheveled, unorganized and undisciplined, I can’t help but wonder if this is a result of an understandable concern

that someone might construe even “appropriate constructive discipline” as over the line. So there is often little, or none. A Coach once told me you don’t understand; kids today are different. Are they? I really don’t think so. I believe that most kids, while they initially bristle at being scolded or corrected (didn’t you), accept it, hopefully, learn from it and move on. Life lessons, right? Maybe not till years after their playing days will they get the life lesson part, and come to understand that their Coach did really care about them and wanted them to excel in the sport yes, but more importantly in life, after sports. Coaches have a difficult and, if not winning, oftentimes a thankless job. “Coaching should be much more than about the Xs and Os, and more about the Jimmys and the Joes,” a fellow long-time coach once imparted to me as I began

Title, to make a million dollars in the NBA. I’m sure many of the other names on that list left for similar reasons. The old adage is still true; sports are a microcosm and training ground for life. As long as not taken to the extreme getting yelled at and paying some consequences (like getting benched or not starting) for mistakes made or lack of hustle, can be a great incentive to work to get better, to stop slacking and to develop a sense of values — a hard days work for a good days pay — or hopefully a win! As a coach, I definitely did get frustrated, but a well-timed glare, a seat on the bench, a game suspension, or in the extreme — getting booted from the team — seemed to send the appropriate message and more often than not got the desired results. I would have loved to play for Bobby Knight! Wait I did — for a similar style coach — who we feared, respected, loved, and won a State Championship with!

my coaching career. Because of the understandable but often overreaction to the crimes of the few the majority, unfortunately, suffer, and I fear we are severely curtailing a coach’s ability to, yes — use “appropriate discipline” — to guide the player to success both on and off the court. Toward the end of his career Bobby Knight did definitely cross the line, but he, by virtue of his forceful character and style, also molded and positively influenced countless players to become successful men. Most of his players, from various accounts, despite his demeanor, loved playing for him. ESPN’s quick scroll down an intentionally blurred list of names of players who left the University while he was coaching — auspiciously because of his style — was disingenuous at best. One of the first names that jumped out at me was Isaiah Thomas. Well yes, he did leave after his sophomore year, after winning a National
