found working in every occupation — although many don’t work at all. They have one common thread, which I will get to later. You and I see zombies beginning with the morning commute to work. They’re operating a motor vehicle, but are not aware of other traffic. We see them at the restaurant as we grab a bite to eat. They appear as a mother and father but pay no attention to their kids. Their children could be burning down the place, and they would have no idea. In many situations, their children have become zombified. We see zombies walking the street, heads down oblivious to what’s going on around them, some even walk in front of traffic. Recently one actually walked off a subway platform. Most of the time, fortunately, they just trip over a curb or run into a mailbox or light pole. Zombies can be found at every sporting event. They pay no attention to the game; their head is down and focused on something immediately in front of them. Once in a while, they come up for enough air to snap a couple of photos or video and then return to head down position. In the workplace, zombie-ism has become a huge problem for the employer. I can’t even imagine the lost hours and productivity it consumes each and every day in our Country. What are the symptoms of being infected by the zombie cyber virus? First, it slowly turns people’s minds into mush from the standpoint they believe whatever is going on in their life is the most important thing in the world. Even though it might just
be cutting the grass or making a meatloaf. As the infliction worsens, they believe everything they read is true. No sources required. No investigative reporting — it’s simply the truth because it’s posted, shared with them or read online. Then it gets even worse. Jim They believe they can Webb, Jr. say anything to another human being or pass on gossip they have read as fact. A good everyday person inflicted with this becomes zombie-like and will say the most evil things about someone who is not in their presence. This virus seems to kill common sense and the filter between one’s brain and mouth. No matter how nasty something is, the person has the right to inflict this thought on another person. What has become most scary is that some modern-day zombies believe they can say whatever heartless, snide or just flat out inappropriate statement they want to another’s face. The Hollywood elite, the top athletes, the President, and the far-left liberal/socialist democrats use the communication tool of the zombie. They stretch the limits to see just how far they can go. This makes it more acceptable and credible to the everyday person. There is no Golden Rule in the world of the zombie, let alone if you don’t have something nice to say, don’t say anything at all thinking. So how can you test for a zombie? Simply take away their smartphone or electronic device and see their reaction. Most will become agitated, then flat-out angry,

and in some cases violent. That handheld electronic device has become the most important thing in their life. They will immediately suffer cyber withdraw. Social media, especially Facebook has created a world where it’s more important to let somebody know what you’re doing than to actually live and enjoy the moment. It creates overwhelming vanity and selfimportance. Cell phones have provided a direct line to Hell. It is the individual’s choice whether they choose to use the medium for this and to what degree. Social media and the use of electronic devices have put things in front of individuals that would never have crossed their path in the past. Including being so unkind and brutal to their fellow man. The individuals heading up Facebook, beginning with Mark Zuckerberg, prey upon turning humans into zombies. They come up with every way possible to draw you in so you can’t get out. They create a system where once you have shown a weakness, they will make sure it continues to show up at your fingertips. Most of all, Zuckerberg wants to divide — by whatever means possible. He wants to vilify Americans that are doing good things through lies and deceit. He wants to fuel his own political agenda, which is completely in line with socialism. He wants to create zombies that drink the hogwash. He wants to create a society of hate and envy while he laughs all the way to the bank. Please do not allow this to happen in your life. Live, love and enjoy each and every day. It is a gift from God. Do not make your life a focal point to be shared. Make others the focal point and help humanity. God is not following anyone on Facebook. God Bless America.

I
have never been a fan of zombies. I remember in the late 70s when “Dawn of the Dead” was the big movie. I had no interest in seeing it. When I go to the movies, I want to laugh and be entertained. I have never been into the blood, gore, and things that go bump in the night features. Shooting zombies in video games has been the fad for years. I’m not sure which came first the TV series “The Walking Dead” or young folks trying to kill brain-eating, nightwalkers in the video game of choice. For those of you that aren’t familiar with zombies, it’s my understanding a person becomes a zombie when they are infected with a virus. This virus changes the person into a walking dead, evil soulless killer. They only eat living flesh; therefore they will not devour their own. Zombies are killed by decapitation or shooting them in the head. Thus the video games and the show “The Walking Dead.” As I’m writing this, I understand why I’ve never had any interest in zombies. What a statement their current popularity is to our society and in regards to present day entertainment. However, that is not what my column is about. I am writing to tell you that a zombie cyber virus has infected our Nation. That zombies are a real life everyday problem in our country, which we come in contact with every day. The tough part is you cannot easily point them out like the zombies seen on TV and in video games. They remain human even though they become distant, uncaring, and caught up in their own world. They’re very prevalent and can be

pring is trying to spring. Though I don’t know that we’ve quite hit that ‘out like a lamb’ portion of the month yet. With April Showers being right around the corner, it seems like a good time to take advantage of the last of the ‘inside days.’ By now Spring Fever is hitting the kids hard and keeping them entertained can’t be easy, so here is a fun craft to bring a little brightness to the inside while we wait for parks, and bikes and enjoying the longer days. Paper Flower Craft What you need • circle paper punch – an extra large one is recommended if this craft will be done by a younger kid • yellow paper • paper in a variety of colors (you can use regular print paper) • paper cutter or scissors • stick glue • green paper drinking straws • clear tape (or patterned for some fun)

small children as it will be easier for them to handle. Cut strips of paper. There is some trial and error with the next step. Depending Steph Nordstrom on your circle size, different lengths (and widths) of paper strips will work. It’s recommend you first make one strip of paper and make a loop (as seen in the next step) and see if it works with your circle size. Once you are happy with the size of the loop in relation to your yellow circle, start cutting strips of paper in that size. I recommend you do the cutting if you are working with younger kids. If you will be making this a group project and want the kids to make the cutting by their own, we recommend you use the largest circle punch, as then cutting strips across the width of a letter sized paper works out nicely. Glue the ends of paper strips together, making a paper loop. You will need quite a few (the number depends on the size of the flower you are making). Glue the loops on one side of the paper circle. We started by sticking 4 at a 90°
angle, then another 4 in between and another 8 in between those. Once you are happy with how full your paper flower craft is looking, apply some glue onto the green paper straw and press it in the middle of the flower. Secure with clear tape. Your paper flower craft is complete.

orn during the Whitehill Duals while his father, Lyle, wrestled his senior year at Lycoming College in 1996, senior Garrett Wesneski (Canton, Pa./Canton Area) always seemed fated to wrestle at the school, even after spending three years at the University of Maryland before deciding to finish his career at Lycoming under the guidance of his dad’s former coach, Roger Crebs, in the summer of 2017. What may have not been fated was what happened on Saturday night, March 9, when Wesneski, seeded fifth in his field at 285 pounds, drove in on a single and completed the move to upset undefeated No. 2 seed Adarios Jones (26-1) of Augustana in the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship final, 9-7, in sudden victory. With the score tied at 7 in sudden victory, Wesneski was the first to take a solid shot, driving in on a single and plowing through to get the takedown before leaping to his feet and greeting Crebs, who has now coached five national champions. “I don’t have many words,” Wesneski said before proving that statement wrong. “It was a wild match. He was
really strong. He scored off a few, what I would call dumb mistakes. I gave up too many cheap points. But I’ve put in so much time. It’s been a long road with a lot of adversity. When it got to sudden victory, I said to myself ‘I am not tired, I am going to go, go, go.’ I went to my best move, the move that I finish all the time in the wrestling room at practice every day and I finished it easy. The rest, I just blacked out. It hasn’t really sunk in yet.” Wesneski finishes his senior year with a 28-1 record and his two-year career at Lycoming with a 66-5 overall record, his .930 winning percentage the best in program history. Along with Saturday night’s national championship, Wesneski was also a two-time Southeast Region champion and the 2018 Southeast Region Most Outstanding wrestler. “It’s been awesome,” Wesneski said. “Coach Crebs gives me a hard time for going to Maryland, but that led me here, getting hurt and not seeing a chance to make it there. Crebs believes in me and he is happy to have me at home. He made me put in extra work all year because he believes in me. I gave my dad a huge hug after and that is

region at the NCAA Championships, with Ferrum finishing 27th with 14.5 points, while the next closest finisher from the Middle Atlantic Conference was Wilkes in 43rd with 2.0 points. Jones earned the first takedown just 20 seconds into the first period, but Wesneski quickly escaped, then bulldozed through to take a 3-2 lead. He also earned a penalty point when Jones grabbed at the edge of the mat to get an out of bounds call. Jones escaped to make it 4-3 by the end of the period. Jones chose neutral to start the second and earned a takedown, but Wesneski tied it with an escape to make it 5-5 heading into the third. Wesneski chose bottom and Jones let him start in neutral to make it 6-5. The move appeared to payoff when Jones earned a takedown with 1:15 left, but Wesneski again earned an escape to tie the score at seven, where it headed into overtime. “We felt really good with the pace of the match, the hand fighting,” Crebs said. “We just kept yelling from the corner to change levels and push pace. The last shot, he created the angle by his movement, cut across and he was able to finish it.” With a first-period takedown and some solid heavy hands to ward off his opponent, Wesneski posted a

something that I will remember the rest of my life. All my friends at Lycoming, all the support from my hometown this weekend has been great. I think I am the first college All-American from Canton and to be a national champion to boot – I can’t put it into words.” Wesneski is Lycoming’s first national champion since Matt Miller won the national title at 197 pounds in 2008 and the 10th in program history. He is also the 40th in the Middle Atlantic Conference’s history. “It’s been a great trip, a great way to end his career,” Crebs said. “He thought he was down one at end of period, but to go into sudden victory and get that shot was great. It has been an emotional rollercoaster – we thought he was going to go to Lycoming five years ago and he went to Maryland. He didn’t experience the success he wanted and he came back home. Last year, he won some matches, but not quite in condition to make it through to where he is now.” Wesneski’s title helped the Warriors finish the tournament in 13th place with 23.5 points, the team’s fourth top 25 finish in the last five years and the team’s 14th top-25 finish in the 26-year tenure of Head Coach Crebs. After finishing second to Messiah at the NCAA Southeast Regional, the Warriors outpaced the rest of the

4-3 decision over Wartburg’s Bowen Wileman (25-10) in semifinals on Saturday afternoon. Wesneski warded off a deep single leg shot from Wileman in the first period, forcing a stalemate before he countered with his own single, spinning it into a takedown to take a 2-0 lead. A second period escape expanded the lead to 3-0. Wileman got a takedown with 47 seconds left and immediately cut Wesneski to make it 4-2. He got in on another single late in the period, but Wesneski used heavy hands to ward off the attack as the period expired, despite a second stalling call. On Friday, Wesneski pinned RIT’s Connor Calkins in the quarterfinals to become Lycoming’s 67th AllAmerican. He made quick work of Calkins, notching a takedown within 30 seconds of the start of the match, earning two near-fall points soon after before working for a turn that led to a pin with two seconds remaining in the period. He opened the tournament on Friday afternoon with a dominating 10-0 major decision over Jesse Webb of Castleton. Wesneski is Lycoming’s ninth heavyweight All-American and the

Both juniors 157-pounder Trevor Corl (Howard, Pa./Bellefonte Area) and Travis Ogden (Clearfield, Pa./ Clearfield Area) reached the AllAmerican round (round of 12) before they dropped out of the tournament Friday night. Junior 165-pounder Hadyn Swartwood (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore Area) (21-9) fell out of the bracket Friday afternoon. Lycoming finished 14-4 in dual meets under Crebs, who reached 400 career dual meet wins against King’s on Dec. 17. The team also finished tied for second at the NCAA Southeast Regional, the team’s best finish since the NCAA moved to the format in 2013, qualifying four wrestlers for the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2001. On March 13th, Wesneski was the first Warrior to earn the MAC’s Wrestler of the Year award, which has been given since 2014. Eleven Warriors earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler award that was given at the conclusion of the MAC Championships between 195706, with Grant Brindle last winning the award in 2005.

Just look at that happy smile! Tyson, a six-year-old Shepherd mix, loves to explore and go for walks. His favorite activities include squeaky toys and snuggling with volunteers in the reading room. He cracks us up by sleeping on his back, belly in the air. What a ham! Tyson also participates in the SPCA’s Freedom Runners program, where he goes for car rides and long walks with volunteers and other shelter dogs. He behaves very well! Tyson can’t wait to meet his new family. He is ready and waiting in Kennel 80.

“Will I find my safe spot again?” Lola is asking. The sweet six-year-old is seeking a cozy home environment where she can relax and be herself again. She gets along well with other cats in our Four Seasons Room and gets along well with humans, too, once she warms up to them. Her idea of a perfect day includes playing with string, soft toys, and sleeping on the couch (especially if a large, comfy blanket is involved). Could you be the one to take Lola home and change her life forever?

ity Councilman Derek Slaughter will be seeking the Democratic nomination for mayor of Williamsport in the May 21 primary election. Derek brings a broad background and experience to the table in spite of his somewhat young age. Born and raised in Williamsport, Derek graduated from Williamsport Area High School in 1999. His high school Spanish teacher, Mrs. Randall, had piqued his interest in the language, but he also had developed a love for computers, but not necessarily programming. This led to his degree in 2003 from Pennsylvania State University with a B.S. in Information Sciences and Technology along with a minor in Spanish. His freshman roommate was from Venezuela, and it sparked Derek’s international interest enough that he
did a semester in Spain in 2003. He stayed at a home that hosted students from around the world, which was a fantastic experience for the young man. He got to spend time with students from Japan, Italy, Germany, and other countries, which was a phenomenal experience. Derek felt that he was called to teach, so he, in 2005, he earned his Master of Education degree from the University of Maryland. He taught third grade in Maryland for a year and then taught elementary school for two years in the DC area. It was rewarding work, especially as he got to coach basketball all this time as well, but after some seven years away, he felt a call back home. A position popped up in Roosevelt Middle School, and it also gave him the possibility to coach basketball — an extra bonus! Derek also had a political itch he

SLAUGHTER
plunge. In 2017 he ran and won a position for Williamsport City Council. Derek’s drive is to get the younger generation involved in the process of change. Though only 38 years old, he has already learned the hard lessons that nothing can be taken for granted. As one who has taught teamwork for years, he knows the importance of cooperation and that good results generally come as a result of hard work. Derek Slaughter views Williamsport as a strong city with huge potential, but it needs new energy and focus. He hopes to bring more transparency into city government, and also develop an environment that will attract and nurture businesses that will provide sustainable jobs. His information management background also drives him to look at modernizing and streamlining the functions of the local government. Is he ready for the mayor’s office? The better question might be, is anyone? But given Derek Slaughter’s broad experience at such a young age, he certainly is as qualified as anyone.
had to scratch. He was exposed to both sides of the spectrum when it came to politics as his mother was strongly conservative, growing up on a rural Pennsylvania farm, and his father grew up in a very heavily liberal section of Philadelphia. Derek learned at an early age to find value in both positions. Working as a schoolteacher and basketball coach, Derek found himself hearing about the concerns of the community. He was already active on the boards of both the Greater Lycoming Habitat for Humanity and the Lycoming County United Way, but he felt he could do more, and explored running for city office. Derek began by attending meetings and then met with various community leaders to hear their concerns about the direction of the city. Derek’s educational background drew him to learn more about what might be involved in being in office, and in 2014 he decided to attend a government training in Harrisburg. It was an eye-opening experience and convinced him that he could take the

LAWRENCE R. LEGGIERI, DDS
My name is Isabelle, but my parents call me Izzy for short. I was adopted from the Humane Society near Pittsburgh. I was found on the streets and was very sick. I was only at the shelter for two hours before I got adopted. I am four years old. I am a long hair tabby, calico, and Maine Coon. I love to snuggle, play, and take naps. I also like to ‘make biscuits’ on my mommy and daddy. I am very friendly and I have purred my way into my parents hearts. ~ Submitted by Nikki H. from Montoursville

County Hall Corner: Wills for Heroes By Larry Stout
T
here is an old adage that there are two things that are sure in life — death and taxes. Taxes can be avoided to a degree, but sooner or later, we all must face the Grim Reaper. It would seem that given the 100 percent certainty of this event, everyone would take the necessary preparations for it. This especially would be true of the disbursement of assets that an individual would possess. Unfortunately, the drawing up of a will to take care of this critically important matter can be expensive. For Lycoming County military veterans and first responders, there is a special program sponsored by the Lycoming Law Association, along with the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division, which can help. The Wills for Heroes program is a free and easy service that provides wills, living wills, health care and financial powers of attorney to military veterans and first responders and their spouses or partners. Volunteer lawyers will staff the event at the Old Lycoming Township Volunteer Fire Company, 1600 Dewey Avenue, Williamsport, beginning at
11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 23rd. Appointments for each person will last about one hour. Back to back appointments will automatically be scheduled for those bringing a spouse or significant other. Notarized legal documents will be provided to each person at the end of each appointment. Proof of affiliation or a DD214 is required at the event. For this year’s event, online registration is open to veterans at par.org/ wfh by using the password “Lycoming.” If all time slots are not filled, registration will be opened to Lycoming County first responders, including firefighters, police and emergency medical technicians. Anyone with questions regarding the program should contact Kristine Waltz at kwaltz@dingeswaltz. com.

How to Create a Smoky Cubano Sandwich
F
or flavor fans, there is nearly no better combo than the complementary tastes in a Cubano sandwich. Complete with layers of roast pork, ham, soft swiss cheese, mustard and topped with tangy pickles, all the flavors and textures play in concert. For an upgrade on the classic sandwich, try this version from Sammy Hagar, a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, who’s known for his riff on the iconic recipe. He takes his favorite sandwich to the next level by adding a smoky kick. “The Cubano has everything I love in a sandwich: gooey melted cheese and a crispy, crunchy crust on the bread,” Hagar said. “It’s great to be able to get all the flavors in each bite. It has pickles and mustard that cut through the rich cheese and pork. When you splash a little Tabasco on it, you get the last perfect ingredients - flavor and heat.” Find his signature sandwich at Sammy’s Beach Bar & Grill locations throughout the country, or try creating Sammy’s Cubano Sandwich at home with this recipe. Sammy’s Cubano Sandwich Cook time: 3 hours and 30 minutes Servings: 6 Mojo Marinade: • 3/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
• 1 cup cilantro, minced • 3/4 cup orange juice • 1/2 cup fresh squeezed lime juice • 3 tablespoons fresh garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon fresh oregano, minced • 2 teaspoons cumin, ground • kosher salt, to taste • coarse black pepper, to taste Sandwich: • 3 1/2 pounds pork shoulder or boneless pork butt • 2 teaspoons Tabasco Chipotle Sauce • 3 tablespoons mayonnaise • 6 pieces Cuban bread or baguette (6 inches each), cut lengthwise • 8 ounces deli ham, thinly sliced • 1/2 pound swiss cheese, thinly sliced • 24 dill pickle chips • 4 tablespoons yellow mustard • 1 cup unsalted butter • 4 tablespoons reserved Mojo Marinade To make Mojo Marinade: In bowl,

Grit March 22, 1964 Cable Firms Move Closer to 9-Channel Completion

he area’s two television cable companies are moving closer toward completion of their planned channel expansion plan. Henry E. Lockard, manager of Williamsport Cable said, work on converting the present system to 9 channels plus 3 FM music stations should be completed within the next six weeks. William Heinbach, manager of Lycoming Television at South Williamsport, said his firm has completed about 80 percent of a similarly proposed change and hopes to have all 9 channels and more than 20 FM music stations for all customers by the first week of June. Williamsport Cable has completed the switch over in Montoursville and downtown Williamsport, it reported, and has begun work in the rest of the city. Completion is expected shortly
for Newberry, Garden View, South Williamsport and DuBoistown. Mr. Lockard said all main trunk lines are completed and secondary lines are now in the process of being changed for the remaining subscribers. He said cable rates will not be raised in the $750,000 project. Mr. Heinbach said the FaxonKenmar section is the most completed area in the work being done by Lycoming TV. The Montoursville and Williamsport areas are about finished, and work is now being done in Newberry. Both men said they hope to offer more than the proposed 9 channels in the future and to make additional music available to subscribers. Lycoming, spending $100,000 in the expansion program, also plans no rate increase, said Mr. Heinbach. Each firm indicated that the area would have one of the largest selections of television and music in the nation once their respective expansion projects are completed.

Women’s Month Feature Judge Joy Reynolds McCoy By Larry Stout
C
ontinuing with significant women who have influenced Lycoming County, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas Joy Reynolds McCoy certainly deserves recognition. Her ten years of service have brought some significant changes, particularly in the county’s Family Court Division. Born and raised in Old Lycoming Township, and graduating from Williamsport Area High School, she attended Elmira College and received her Bachelor of Science degree in 1989. From there she studied and
graduated from the Franklin Pierce Law School of the University of New Hampshire in 1993. The future judge kept her local connections, securing a summer internship with the law firm of McNerney, Page, Vandelin and Hall after her junior year in college, and clerked every summer after that. She obviously made an impression as they offered her a job even before she graduated law school. Joy Reynolds McCoy did a little bit of everything with McNerney, and eventually became a partner in 1998. She loved every part
of her practice, but particularly liked being in court, and was especially drawn to family law matters. It was challenging work and required her to practice in seven area counties besides Lycoming. It was also demanding as she had to keep up with local rules as well as the state statutes, but surprisingly, Joy Reynolds McCoy found the complexity and challenge exciting. It was this passion that eventually led her to seek election to the bench, which occurred in November of 2009 when she was elected to a ten-year term in the Court of Common Pleas of Lycoming County. To be honest, Family Court Division is generally considered the least glamorous, as it presides over the often contentious and sometimes volatile cases involving custody, support, divorce, domestic violence, delin-
quency and the Department of Children & Youth matters. Traditionally, the newest elected judge inherits this least desirous position. Judge Joy Reynolds McCoy, however, surprisingly campaigned to become the Family Court Judge. She knew that she was bringing fifteen years of experience in this field, and also had considerable pro bono work in domestic violence. It was this unique perspective — a sound understanding of the clients involved along with a solid foundation in the specifics of family law — that equipped this special woman to become a very special judge. One of her first innovations concerned juvenile delinquency cases. The Juvenile Probation Department utilizes some half dozen specialized facilities in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania for these troubled teens,

tic Violence Review, which reviews cases of homicide that occurred, and see what could prevent such events from happening in the future. Of course, her most innovative measure was in 2018 with the creation of the position of Lycoming County Canine — specifically Jedi II, Courthouse Facility Dog. This incredibly kind creature provides comfort to children involved in the judicial system. Frightened children who are brought into Judge Reynolds McCoy’s courtroom now cuddle up to the kindest animal in the county and their fears are greatly alleviated. Judge Joy Reynolds McCoy has embraced a job that others have sought to avoid. Not only that, she has initiated changes that have made the county a better place. This is a very special woman indeed.

and sentencing to one of these institutions is quite serious. A juvenile probation officer is required to visit each of these young people every thirty days they are in the institution, and Judge Reynolds McCoy made the decision to accompany the JPO until she had visited every single facility. She made the decision to not sentence a young person to any institution she had not personally checked out. Judge Reynolds McCoy is not just concerned about what goes on in her courtroom; she wants to prevent others from coming before her. She chairs the Domestic Violence Taskforce which meets quarterly to bring people together from all agencies involved in these matters to see if there are any gaps that need to be addressed. She also has created the Lycoming County Domes-

dandelion... get it?!) Dandelion coffee is actually an herbal tea used as a coffee substitute that is made from the root of the dandelion plant. Roasted dandelion root has a satisfying coffee-like taste and acts like a diuretic which helps to cleanse the liver, reduce bloating, and inflammation. Additionally, it provides an energy boost without the crash that can come from the dehydrating effects of coffee. I found two brands of dandelion coffee: Dandy Blend on Amazon and Teeccino on iHerb.com. Another healthy alternative to coffee that’s been trendy lately is celery juice. Yeah, I just threw up a little bit in my mouth, too. But, apparently, celery juice enthusiasts claim that a glass a day of this
concoction removes toxins from your liver, boosts the immune system, restores the central nervous system, and can break down fat. However, you can’t really buy plain celery juice, most over the counter jars of juice are a mix that includes celery. For pure, straight celery juice you’ll need a juicer, or food processor and roughly one large bunch of celery to make the recommended sixteen ounces of juice a day. My husband is a fan of celery, and we have a food processor, so while I may join him in a cup of dandelion root coffee or green matcha tea, he’s all on his own for this one: happy juicing there, sweetie. The last alternative for coffee I have found avoids the mess of drinking all
together. Rhodiola supplements, which is an adaptogen that can increase energy, help you adapt to stress and improve your memory. You can find this supplement on Amazon at a variety of price points. What I like about replacing coffee with a supplement is that it’s way easier to swallow a pill than brew a tea or juice a bunch of vegetables. My hope this Lent/spring is that both my husband and I find healthier ways to kickstart our mornings. Coffee isn’t necessarily the bad guy, but it’s nice to have alternatives when trying to avoid the caffeine crash when we’re in the mood for something less bitter, or if we wake up with a sensitive stomach.

maple syrup, or a hint of cinnamon. Next up, green tea. There are several different types of green tea. The most common are jasmine and mint. Though most bagged green teas are nothing to write home about, the “loose leaf ” versions tend to be more flavorful and aromatic. For this coffee-free Lent, we’re trying matcha green tea, which still boasts caffeine and purports to help fight cancer and heart disease. Pure Leaf has matcha ginger sachets, and the directions recommend using a whisk, instead of a spoon, to stir up this brew. If you’re looking to try something more far afield, consider dandelion coffee. (Did you catch my pun there? Afield and

The Roving Sportsman… Time to Check Your Turkey Vest By Jon Pries
M
arch 20th is finally upon us — the official first day of spring! In just over four short weeks, the Pennsylvania Youth Turkey Season will occur — Saturday, April 20 to be exact, and the following Saturday, April 27, will begin the monthlong Spring Gobbler Season! With that in mind, this would be a great time to do a pre-season check of your equipment. First, empty out all of the contents of your turkey vest, as well as the items in a fanny pack if you use that as well. This is the time to verify the integrity of your calls, gadgets, and gear that you count on when you are in the woods. Service any items that need so to make sure they will work as desired when called upon during the hunt. Chalk your box calls, scuff up the surface of your slate calls, lightly sand the tip of the strikers, and put a drop of oil on your pruning shears or folding hand saw. If you asked a dozen or so different turkey hunters what they feel is important to have in their vest, you would, no doubt, be surprised at the variety of answers. There are some things, however, that most would agree upon. A variety of turkey calls is important. Most hunters have their favorite go-to type of call, be it the box call, slate call or mouth call. When considering the box call,
there is the standard length call and one that is called the long box. Most hunters rely solely on the standard size call, but when you are hunting in more open areas where you need to project the sound as far as possible, the long box call will project further, especially in windy conditions. (I know of a man who would carry a dozen box calls into the woods wrapped in a small blanket. He would extract the first call, make a series of yelps and clucks with it, then listen for a response from a gobbler. If he heard nothing, he would return the call to the blanket and take out the second one, again running a series of turkey sounds with it. He would go down the line until one of the calls elicited a response and then continue using that call to lure the gobbler into range! Old gobblers can be pretty finicky, and this hunter’s technique often proved that a slight variation in pitch or tone from a particular box call would do the trick, while others may not.) My suggestion is that carrying two different box calls might be a wise idea! The same is true of slate calls, or pot calls. They tend to produce slightly different sounds, as does one that has a glass insert instead of slate. The glass call is a good choice for rainy weather or days with heavy humidity. They really don’t take up a lot of room in your vest, so have at least two with you. Similarly, with the strikers, multiple ones will help in producing

slightly different tones. A variety of mouth calls should be in your vest, for the same reasons. Most successful spring turkey hunters will take along one or two locator calls, for the times when you don’t want to imitate a turkey, but rather want to hear if there is a gobbler in the area. The sounds produced by a crow call, an owl call or a coyote call will often make a gobbler “shock-gobble” in response. Gadgets and gear that are available to turkey hunters seems endless, but most hunters agree on several items. A small set of binoculars can be very useful in spotting a gobbler before he sees you. A pair of clippers or a folding hand saw will enable you to clear limbs that interfere

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…
CWD – Not Going Away
W
riting about the great outdoors is something outdoor writers enjoy doing — myself included. Some subjects like chronic wasting disease or CWD, however, are very disheartening and garner a good bit of controversy as well. Like it or not CWD is here. It’s an integral part of our hunting heritage, and it’s probably not going away anytime soon. CWD is similar to “mad cow” disease in cattle; it causes a spongy degeneration in the brains of infected
animals. The disease results in abnormal behavior, loss of body functions and ultimately death. Most scientists believe the disease is caused by a prion or a protein that misfolds and accumulates in the brain thereby resulting in brain degeneration and death. The disease first showed up in 1967 in a captive herd of mule deer in Colorado. The disease is known to be spread through infected saliva and congregated deer greatly increase the potential for spreading the disease. Presently there is no antidote
and herein lies some of the controversy surrounding the issue. Much of the controversy had come about when a researcher, Dr. Frank Bastian, offered up a different theory concerning the cause Ken of CWD. Without Hunter going into great detail, Dr. Bastian feels that CWD is caused by bacteria rather than a prion thus offering up possible treatments and a solution to the disease threatening our deer and elk.
Most scientists are not on board with Bastian’s theory, and they do not feel the research is there to back it up. Even more controversy erupted when the Pennsylvania Game Commission met with a lot of skepticism and backlash from the public over its plans to use U.S. Department of Agriculture sharpshooters. The plan was to remove hundreds of deer in targeted areas in Blair and Bedford counties, but angry citizens and landowners brought an end to that plan at least for now. At present, the only seemingly effective tool for stopping or slowing the spread of CWD is removing large numbers of deer from areas where the

the elk herd, it could be devastating both to hunting possibilities and tourism. Presently it is not believed that CWD can be spread to humans, but even that has come under some scrutiny. It’s not recommended that you eat deer meat infected with CWD and I know I would not knowingly eat it myself. Where all this goes remains to be seen but like it or not deer numbers may have to be reduced in CWD infected areas to help slow the spread of the disease — and whether deer hunters or government sharpshooters do it may be a moot point.

disease is known to exist. Targeted removal of deer from infected areas does seem to be working. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources, through the use of culling, has held male CWD infected deer below two percent in CWD zones. There is more bad news to add to the already existing controversy. A CWD infected buck was discovered in a high-fence hunting preserve in Clearfield. That discovery is in Management Area 3, which covers a southern portion of our present elk range. Elk like deer have split hooves and can also be infected with CWD. Should the disease ever spread into

Now his life was hanging by a thread. Sports have always been a big deal in the Lowery family, and have forged many memories for us. My grandson, Tucker, is a teammate of JT’s and he, like the rest of us, just can’t seem to make sense out of what has happened. Over the years, I have heard many coaches, and I’ve said so myself, tell players “to go out and play the game as if it is the last one you’ll ever play.” Most often, they are words that just go into a player’s one ear and out the other. But, three weeks ago that wasn’t the case for Pete Sinibaldi and his South Williamsport teammates. They understood this was THEIR LAST GAME, and their emotions showed it. Kuhn never regained consciousness, and just four days after that dreadful discovery his parents had to make that horrible, unthinkable decision to let him go to that great beyond. Somehow his mother, Jenn, courageously posted to the many who had offered their thoughts and prayers, “God seems to feel as though JT is needed on Heaven’s basketball team.” Nobody told JT Kuhn this could be his last game as his Big Spring Bulldogs were eliminated from the playoffs. His talent was real, and his future was bright. To anyone reading this who is an athlete, regardless of the sport, enjoy what you are doing and give every game or match your very best effort. No one ever wants it to be their very last game. JT Kuhn certainly didn’t. Excuse me for being personal.

given them throughout the season. Some tears flowed. Some quiet conversation followed while some remained silently seated seemingly unwilling to take that uniform off for the last time. For me, that moment was three weeks ago, and it still remains vivid in my mind. Following that game, my son, Doug, himself a junior high school basketball coach in Newville, called to find out how our team did. I told him details about the game and explained that the emotion of the night was something I hadn’t experienced in quite a while. Then he quietly said, “Do you remember JT Kuhn?” I certainly did, as he was a talented player on the Big Spring varsity basketball team which I had seen play on several occasions. A 6’4” sophomore, Kuhn was a key reason why Big Spring reached the playoffs for just the fourth time in the past 23 years and participated in the District 3 playoffs for the first time as a 5-A school. “Well, he is on life-support at the Hershey Medical Center,” came Doug’s haunting words. Kuhn had been experiencing some migraine headaches on occasion but was under doctor’s care. The previous night he watched a college basketball game at home on TV with his family, snacked on a bowl of ice cream and went to bed. The next morning as his mom tried to wake him for school, he was unresponsive. He had suffered cardiac arrest, and his brain had begun to swell. A week earlier he was playing in the basketball playoffs.

actually hires someone each year to keep an eye on our expensive grasses. I’m serious. They added many other improvements, but most of these upgrades were only brought in for a single game. The gorgeous Jumbotron that stood in deep center was one of those that was packed up when the major leaguers were done. The first two MLB Little League Classics were very successful, and all of the lucky kids who were in attendance had a blast. The third is scheduled for August 18th. This game will feature the Chicago Cubs and the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cool beans. The city has since scored an additional $600,000 to go to the structural upgrades at Bowman Field. My man Sen. money was “intended” to go to the visiting team’s clubhouse and the purchase of a new scoreboard. Solid. These final upgrades are very crucial in keeping the Williamsport Crosscutters around. No. They do not own Bowman. The minor league team only leases the facility. The City of Williamsport is responsible for all of the capital improvements as they handled the bids for construction and the $600,000 scoreboard. One of the companies who didn’t win the contract cried foul ball. They protested and accused us of insider trading on the BA5615-09. This unfortunate delay has opened some worms. Council recently asked the Mayor to outline his matching funds. Crickets. Initially, we were to receive monies from the Crosscutters, River Valley Transit, Lycoming
County Visitors Bureau and Natural Gas Impacts to equal the State’s investment. But something must have gone wrong. We are now completely out of money. The administration doesn’t want to borrow or take out a loan. Yes. It’s a mess, kids. Good luck in getting this new scoreboard by June 14 — the Crosscutters’ home opener. But forget who’s on first. What’s the score at Bowman? Another example of why sports and politics simply do not mix. Hopefully, the City can make these upgrades without using taxpayers’ dollars in a timely matter. And if they do — perhaps Bowman Field can even be used by the local high schools. A lot has changed with the protocols, and the jury is still out. By the time I am scribing this, none of the scholastic teams have heard if they will be able to use Bowman this spring. Cheers.

on a $3 million expansion. A large deck along the first base line was constructed. This additional space allowed fans to interact while enjoying food and refreshments. Bowman also made some changes to the stadium’s seating. It reduced the capacity to 2,366 according to Wikipedia. Major League Baseball got involved in 2017. They wanted to play a regular season game at historic Bowman. This was an unprecedented idea, and the contest was scheduled during the Little League World Series, which made it even better. But in order to host something this big, our little ballpark had to go through some major changes. MLB invested millions and Bowman, and her surroundings turned into Area 51. It was a huge secret, but the state of the art playing surface captured the most buzz. MLB

THE FOX AND THE HENHOUSE Nursing homes are typically very good at caring for the daily personal and medical needs of the people who live there. Compassionate, professional staff work to provide a safe environment. But that care is only part of the equation. When a patient resides in a nursing home the financial future of their family is at great risk. Nursing homes are typically for-profit corporations. Often, they offer to prepare PA Medicaid applications for their residents. That may sound good because the home is providing a service. Unfortunately, most people have one or more important issues that require special handling by a trained elder law attorney. There are rules in place to provide families with the ability to protect assets prior to Medicaid application. Without the expertise of an elder law attorney it is likely the applicant may be forced to spend more money in the nursing home prior to receiving benefits. And a faulty application could disqualify the patient from benefits for a significant amount of time. This is your family’s money and a short-sighted effort by the nursing home could benefit the home and cost you a great deal. Nursing home staff are not elder law attorneys and protecting your resources is not their focus. Careful planning by an experienced elder law attorney or Certified Medicaid PlannerTM , can preserve your assets. Think before you act. And call us. We will work for you at a reasonable rate.
