I’m Tired of Watching The Elected Lifestyles of the Rich and Infamous By Jim Webb Jr.

I

’m not going to waste my words on the Mueller Report and Russia. It needs to be put in the rearview mirror. Nor on the despicable Jussie Smollett and the Cook County DA’s Office. That has the fingerprints of former President Barack Obama all over it. I want to try to stay positive and approach this week’s column from the position of the one thing that must change for the good of our Nation. It is a non-partisan issue. Both parties are guilty of creating the current system of government where all those inside the Washington Beltway are getting fat and happy eating at the trough of the American taxpayer. Meanwhile, common sense and Congressional productivity are at an all-time low. No matter what side of the aisle you are on gridlock is good for business. The more attention you can bring to an issue, the greater the lobbyist interaction becomes. This provides an endless stream of revenue flowing right into the Washington political coffers. The more division you can create between Americans, the easier you can sell your poppycock. The extreme liberal leaders of the Democratic Party are currently using a complete divide and conquer, scorchedearth policy on the American people to gain the elected seats. They do not care about our Country, only the power and money

associated with ruling our Nation. Their approach is like that ad running on TV — free, free, free, free, free. Tell the American people, and all those living inside our borders to elect us and everything will be paid for courtesy of the federal government. No questions asked. A vote for us is a vote for Easy Street. Explain to me how that’s not attempting to buy votes? Maybe because you have to be an idiot to believe it’s really going to happen and not an empty promise. As far as the Republican blame for what is going on in Washington. It’s gridlock created by old elected lifetime Republican politicians. This was evident when President Trump could not gain their support on the campaign trail or when first seated in the White House. His own party was fighting him at every turn. This gave life to a wounded Democratic Party and allowed them to regain a foothold with many American people. During my lifetime the Republican Party has done a terrible job of looking toward the future and grooming candidates. They have also never done a good job of getting their message out to younger voters. They need to put their arms around Americans from every walk of life. Our Country has changed greatly in the last decade alone. Old school Republican politics are a thing of the past, that’s why Mr. Trump was elected. Both parties have rigged the system. The Founding Fathers were very specific that being elected was about serving our Nation.

Not a lifetime job with more benefits and staff than they could have even imagined. It was intended to be an elected duty of an American citizen, to leave behind your family to serve America, then return to your home state and support yourself. Both parties have created a Washington Establishment where the salary, expense account, health insurance, and retirement plan is more in line with Royalty than service to Country. An example of this is ObamaCare. If it was the best insurance for the American people, everybody inside the Beltway should have had it as healthcare. Especially the sitting president at the time. Most elected officials leave Washington with a lifetime of health insurance and a guaranteed pension that no other American could have created in the private sector. Both guaranteed by the American people. This is a fleecing of America by those elected to serve the taxpayer. It’s been created over decade after decade of corruption and mismanagement by both parties. It has been written in a language that most Americans can’t even understand — legalese. Why are elected officials treated better than our military personnel after their years of service? If anyone should have the benefits an inside the Beltway elected official has, it should be somebody that put their life on the line for our freedom. Not somebody that put their signature on the line as a Democrat or a Republican to create a more powerful government, not for the People. There is no way our Country should have the national debt we continue to run up. The Washington Way for decades has been, spend it like you have it. This is both parties signing off on uncontrolled spending. How

many times have you heard President Trump talk about national debt? I have not heard it mentioned since his election. To control national debt would be to take money away from Washington. It’s never going to happen with the current system of government these shysters have created. Yes, this is staying positive. I wish I could write what I really think. Now here’s the good news, we can change Washington. The toughest part now is it would require the complete unity of the American people. Something that both parties have done their best to divide into fractured segments. So where do we start? Term limits, term limits, term limits! No more winning the election lottery and getting rich for a lifetime at the cost of the American taxpayer. This also needs to apply to every position of appointment, like Supreme Court Justices. There is no way a lifetime appointment is good for justice. It only divides and creates political power plays within the judicial system. Not to mention the judges just become too old to serve competently. We must all unite for the future of our great Nation. There is no way Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell or any of these fat cat politicians are going to give up the wealth and power they’ve created without a fight. We need to demand that candidates run for election on this platform, to take America back as a government “For the People” as it was intended. There is absolutely no way to drain that so-called swamp without term limits. It has become an ocean that eventually encompasses all elected or appointed inside the Washington Beltway. God Bless America.

Baseball and Buffalo Wings

S

pring has officially arrived and with it, a new season of Major League Baseball. I caught the Braves opener (yesterday, as of this writing), and while the Phils got the better of them, I still have high hopes for another winning season. Ender Inciarte, Freddie Freeman and Ozzie Albies are all poised to put up another great season. We can’t forget about Rookie of the Year Ronald Acuna Jr., who had an unbelievable freshman season last year. I think he’s a player we are all going to be talking about for a long time to come. Sean Newcomb and Julio Teheran are both returning to the mound and looking to put up Ks. And let’s not forget we are welcoming Brian McCann back to the ATL. I’m excited about the upcoming season. #ChopOn The rules and regs of baseball don’t seem to change very much, but there is some interesting stuff on the horizon. Technology, strategy changes, and new rules could really change the face of the game. “I think the commissioner’s just trying to stay ahead of the curve, do what’s best for the game. There’s a lot of intelligent people who thought this stuff over, and there’s a lot of people involved,” said Jim Leyland, the longtime manager who is now a special assistant for the Detroit Tigers. “I’m a big believer that when you’ve had something in place for so, so long, any time there’s a change, there’s going to be a reaction. Some of it’s going to be pro, some of it’s going to be con.” According to the AP, “Major League Baseball and its players’ union agreed recently to a deal that included rule changes for 2020. When a pitcher enters the game, he’ll need to face at least three batters or stay in until the end of the halfinning.”

And while the commissioner’s office has agreed not to implement a pitch clock before the 2022 season, other changes are being looked at including, possible changes to the strike Steph zone, the height of the Nordstrom mound and even the distance from the mound to the plate. Plus, there is still the fact that only AL stadiums utilize a DH. It’s been this way since 1973. Considering Interleague play started in 1997, I think it’s time to take a look at getting a DH in every stadium. According to union head, Tony Clark, “We think the changes in the game, how the game is being played, some of the concerns that the other side continues to voice in relation to pace and activity during the course of the game warrant a discussion about a DH in both leagues.” One of the most interesting developments that I have read recently has been about the independent Atlantic League. Beginning in late April, computers will be used for ball/strike calls, and the distance from the mound to home plate will be extended by two feet for the second half of the season. I am extremely curious about the use of ‘roboumps’ and how that could affect the game. Also, I feel like it’s going to be far less fun to yell at an artificial blue. It should be an exciting couple of years for Major League Baseball, and I’m excited to see where it goes.

So y’all know I tried the hottest ramen. And if you caught my video on Facebook, you know I took some ghost pepper tortilla chips to task also. If you haven’t seen the video yet, it’s posted on the Webb Weekly Facebook page. Go check it out. Next up was supposed to be the scorpion pepper hot sauce, but that didn’t work out. Steve didn’t think that there would be enough of a difference between that and the chips, so I tried it out, and he was right. In trying to figure out what to do next, Steve mentioned that Buffalo Wild Wings has a hot wing challenge. Now, I don’t really care about eating any of this stuff is a specific amount of time, so I didn’t really care too much about the challenge itself. I was just in for the wings. The ‘Blazin’ wings, specifically. The wings that come with a warning and you have to ask your server about said warning before ordering. I wasn’t looking to get carried away, so I ordered the ‘snack size,’ which is five wings. BTW, who decided to make it five wings? Wings come in ½ dozens. But I digress… So I ate a couple of mozzarella sticks before the wings, and I did get ranch and celery to go along with. Then I dove in. The wings were…really hot. Probably the hottest thing I have ever eaten. I think it took a good three hours for my mouth and belly to finally cool off. There was for sure some sweat rolling. But overall, I think I handled it pretty well. I finished all five wings — and a beer — and was pretty much set. So next up will be the ChocoLoco challenge. I’ll be doing a video of that one for sure. I didn’t film the wings, because quite frankly, no one really wants to watch someone eat wings. The ChocoLoco looks to be about twice as hot as the Blazin wings, so this should be something to watch for sure. Wish me luck!

GROUP

T

he grounds of the Stevens Primary School, 1150 Louisa Street, Williamsport will be a buzz of activity on Saturday, April 13, when an event to kick-off fundraising efforts to construct a new playground under the auspices of the Kids United program takes place. The activities that day, beginning at 8 a.m. will include a Community Cleanup from 8 to 11 a.m., a 3 on 3 basketball tournament from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. and a Community Celebration from 12:30 to 6 p.m. According to Spencer Sweeting, a member of the group spearheading the Kids United Playground effort, The Kids United Community Playground is a collaborative project bringing together local community organizations to build a positive, healthy, fun environment inspiring our whole community to learn, imagine and play together. This partnership is led by the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport and the Rotary Club of Williamsport and is in collaboration with the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation. The estimated cost for this project is $400,000. Cost includes preparing the area, playground features, installation,

and landscaping. Five percent of the cost includes consultant fees. Their team has already secured a Matching Funds Hero’s Grant, leaving a balance of $275,000. A mission statement about the project states in part: “In 2015, a core team of community-minded individuals came together on a common dream of building a community playground that would be inclusive for all kids of all abilities and backgrounds. While Lycoming County has over 20 parks for play, recreation or both, we are missing a truly inclusive environment. Our desire is to create a playground where disabilities disappear, and inclusive play is promoted for all children, enhancing the quality of life of children and families through fitness and socialization. “Kids United Community Playground will feature equipment that contributes to the 5 Elements of Inclusive Play. The structure will include poured rubber flooring, and accessible ramps for wheelchairs and other assistive devices, providing access to all levels. The playground will include traditional equipment as well as structures that encourage cognitive and imaginative play, fitness and instrumental activities, including: Sensory Panels, Whirl with Me, Oval Swing, Conga Drums, Reflection

Communication Playgrounds can support the development of receptive and expressive language, allowing children to demonstrate knowledge and expressions. Language development occurs through natural play behaviors and routines and is enhanced through developmentally appropriate play elements, loose parts, and outdoor programming. Kids United Community Playground is about community, and so they are inviting the community to help them make this dream come true by donating through the Williamsport Area School District Education Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. All donations, of all sizes, are tax-deductible and appreciated. “I think it’s exciting to see how the community has already rallied around the Kids United Playground project, and we’re just getting started,” Sweeting told Webb Weekly. “It’s a true community partnership. Kiwanis and Rotary — which have always enjoyed a playful rivalry — are collaborating to make this happen. The Williamsport Area School District has gotten behind this and provided real resources to make this a reality — ideally located property, long-term maintenance and care, and more. Individuals like Ron Diemer and organizations like the Genetti Hotel have seen the value of the project, and have organized great events to rally people to this great cause. The community partnership being formed around the project is really beautiful.”

Swing, Max Climb Summit, and the Rock ’n Wave.” The 5 Elements of Inclusive Play are: Social/Emotional: As children play together they learn to cooperate, take turns, and engage in meaningful dramatic and imaginative play experiences, which create lifelong memories. Providing a place for children to feel emotionally secure allows them to belong and to choose how and when to engage in play. Physical: All children need opportunities to be physically active through play; play environments that provide a variety of developmentally appropriate activities offer healthy risk, challenge children of all abilities, and create places where everyone wants to play. Sensory Play is most meaningful in sensory-rich environments that encourage discovery and exploration. Sensory play through tactile, visual, auditory and olfactory experiences helps children understand the world around them. Cognitive Children learn through play and interacting with people and the world around them. Supporting intuitive play behaviors that stimulate development can help keep children engaged in meaningful play for longer periods of time. Opportunities for children to problem solve, think abstractly, and develop cause and effect skills help provide unique hands on opportunities to bring learning outside.

illiamsport will have its Sunday baseball this summer if present plans being made are consummated, according to reports reaching the “Gazette and Bulletin” and the baseball diamond will vie with the motorcar and call of the state highways in attracting local workingmen Sunday afternoons. Sunday baseball has been discussed her for several years but has never been attempted. Last year with the organization of the Williamsport club of the professional NYP League the matter was given renewed attention. The management of the league club, however, dismissed the project after a brief consideration and will not attempt to revive it.

Now the Antlers Club of the Williamsport Lodge of the Elks Club has become interested in the matter and will probably carry it through. An amateur or semiprofessional team will be organized and games will be scheduled with other teams of a like nature through this section of the state. The club has a large membership and can easily assemble a strong team within itself. The Antlers Club grounds are located along the river, to west and outside of the city. About 40 acres of level ground is available for use as the playing space and motorcars. The latter will be, of course, essential, since the games are expected to attract baseball fans from all parts of the county and surrounding towns. A good grass diamond will also be characteristic of the venture.

Women’s Month Feature – Anne Reiner By Larry Stout

T

his series has featured two very special judges and a very talented editor. To complete the series, it seems appropriate to highlight another special woman who is a rather unusual editor. Her name is Anne Reiner, and she is the creator of the online magazine, On the Pulse (onthepulsenews.com). Its goal is to find people behind the policies and heart behind the issues in the greater Lycoming County area. It does not provide daily coverage or breaking news. Instead, it is feature-oriented, with an in-depth people focus. Anne took a long path to arrive where she is today. She was born in Ohio, but her family moved to Trout Run when she was just one year old. The youngest of three, with two older brothers, she was homeschooled and then cyber schooled through high school. She learned well, and went on to study at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, PA. During her studies, Anne was able to secure internships in

Washington, D.C. and New York City, eventually graduating with a degree in journalism. Anne was able to get a job with a lobbying organization in D.C., but she desperately wanted to get a job in journalism. As much as these provided good experience, after a couple of years of this she was suffering from “big city stifle.” When the lobbying firm offered her a chance to work in New Mexico, Anne jumped at the chance. While there she freelanced for a small little newspaper and even picked up some extra money tending

bar (which she loved, by the way). But even more, she loved the open spaces of the American West. However, as much as she was enjoying the Land of Enchantment, she still wanted to get that start she so coveted in the world of journalism. After applying to every small town paper on both coasts, and receiving no responses, her father saw an advertisement in a newspaper she was very familiar with — the Williamsport Sun-Gazette. So, in 2015, Anne finally got her wish to be a real journalist. It caused her to see Williamsport in an entirely different way. Before it was just a place where she shopped or went to restaurants with her friends, but now peeling back the layers caused her to see beyond that and discover a community with real issues. Over time, Anne discovered that this discovery had created for her a connection with this community. Though Anne did well with the Sun-Gazette, enjoying the colleagues she worked with and even becoming

one of the paper’s editors, she had an itch she wanted to scratch. Anne wanted to create an avenue to tell local stories through a medium that build engagement in a younger audience. It bothered her that they had no news outlet outside of Facebook, which is hardly fact-based or guided in any way. So, after a lot of sweat equity, on January 19th of this year, “On the Pulse” went online with a soft launch. Each week it has been getting better and better. Currently, there is an event listing featuring special activities, a “best of ” series highlighting such things as the best places to walk a dog or find an internet connection, and a video feature. Right now there is one on a Penn College student performing sculpture welding. Anne Reiner is a journalistic entrepreneur, who will be celebrating her 28th birthday this week. It is people like Anne who help us remember that you’re never too old to start learning, and you’re never too young to aim high and achieve great things.

My hearing aids are great. I am so glad I got them when I did. It’s allowed me to hear things that I haven’t heard in a long time. The people here are very courteous, knowledgeable, and friendly. adies, have a great and fun night out and at the same time help a worthy cause, when the Sixth Annual Mom Prom is held on Saturday, April 13th at the Genetti Hotel and Convention Center, beginning at 6:30 p.m. This year’s featured charity will be “Helping Our Warriors.” “As one of the founders who brought a nationally known event to Williamsport in 2014. Williamsport Mom Prom has been on the Mom Prom map for six years now and will continue years from now,” Christina Staccone told Webb Weekly. “We could not do what we do without the commitment of the ladies who attend yearly, the committee- volunteers and our local businesses. This year our theme is “Western,” and we are raising funds for Lycoming HOW- Helping Our Warriors.” She said the support of manager Mark Schefsky and the staff from the Genetti Hotel, DJ Kevin Head helped to make this possible year after year. One thing that doesn’t change is that there is no need to be a mom. This is a ladies only event, and no you don’t need to be a mom, but you must be 21 years of age and older. Staccone explained how the concept for the “Mom Prom” came about. The Mom Prom was created in Canton, Michigan in 2006 at St. Thomas a’Becket

Catholic Church. It was a ladies night out for charity in which women wore their old prom gowns, bridesmaids dresses, or wedding gowns. It was a real prom with a DJ, tackiest dress contest, and a game to crown the new queen. This was a wonderful, hilarious night in which women could dance the night away, have fun with friends, and help a worthy cause. “I believe we as members of our community have a responsibility to help those that are less fortunate and contribute to the common good,” Staccone said. “I feel this so strongly that it’s been a longstanding practice of mine to donate, support and volunteer in local charitable organizations /events. Remembering every little bit truly helps when it comes to good works. This year we are raising funds for an area near and dear to my heart- serving our warriors male and female, past- present who have served & continue to serve our country and protected our freedoms. We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude.” In addition to Staccone, the Mom Prom Committee consists of Jodi Fox, Annette Krauser, Alicia Keller, Shantay HallStrachon, Karen Clabaugh, and Vanessa Rushoe. Tickets before the event are $25, at the door that evening $30. They are available at two sites- Robert M. Sides in Williamsport and at the Genetti Hotel.

This Week’s LION You – The Voter By Larry Stout

L

ycoming County is now just seven weeks away from the May 21st primary. Those with decades of political background in this area claim that this might be one of the most important primary elections in many years. Consider that all three county commissioners, the county row officers, the district attorney, Court of Common Pleas judges, Williamsport city mayor, four city council members, as well as our US congressional representative will all be on the ballot this year. Though these do not have the hot buzz of a presidential primary, these individuals will impact the county in a much more direct way. We will be voting on the future of Lycoming County. Seven weeks might seem like a long time, but for a voter who wants to make an informed decision, it is not much time at all. Consider the race for county commissioners for exam-

ple. There are nine candidates (which includes the two incumbents) running on the Republican ballot alone. There are even four Republican candidates running for the position of prothonotary. Now, if we are honest about it, probably less than one person out of ten (maybe even in a hundred) could explain what a prothonotary does. So, how would a voter choose between four individuals who are running for the office? Here are three suggestions for the Lycoming County voter to take in preparation for the May 21st primary. 1. LEARN Almost every candidate has some public information about them. It may be from their own website or promotional literature, and it may be from outside sources. These should serve as background and not gospel. Everyone has their own criteria to judge candidates — some look for experience, others value education and others like an outsider who

If a candidate is particularly appealing, jump in and help him or her! Put out lawn signs, pass out flyers, tell friends, etc. Getting involved on the ground floor of a campaign can be tremendously satisfying, especially for young people. Many of those who serve in office admit to getting their start this way. It also applies to senior citizens who are the other side of the spectrum. It is a way to make a difference. And that is the beauty of democracy — every single one of us can make our mark.

Milton Rotary Club To Host Casino Night April 6 To Benefit Ronald McDonald House By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he Ronald McDonald House in Danville is part of a program that is a home away from home for families who are dealing with the emotional, physical and financial challenges of having a child in the hospital or receiving outpatient care. It is indeed a very worthy cause, and the good folks at the Milton Rotary Club are helping to support it by holding their 17th “Casino Night” on April 6 at 7 p.m. Casino Night will be held at the Watson Inn in Watsontown and is open to the public. Try your hand, using crazy cash to play Black Jack, Poker, Roulette, Craps, Horse Racing, and Beat the Dealer. Ticket price is $15 in advance and $20 at the door, which includes free crazy cash and refreshments. A raffle will be held with a Traeger Tailgater 20, 19,500 BTU Pellet Grill donated by Cole’s Hardware as the Grand Prize. Use the crazy cash you win to get chances to win great prizes donated by local businesses. They have many gift certificates donated by local restaurants, rounds of golf, gift baskets, tickets to theater and sporting events and much more. “The Milton Rotary Club began this event 17 years ago when I was the president

of the Club,” Bonnie McDowell, former president of the Milton Rotary Club, told Webb Weekly. “We were looking for new fundraisers to help support the projects that we do in the community. I believe the local Chapter of the American Red Cross had held a similar event in prior years that I attended and it was fun, but they stopped holding it, so it was a good time for us to pick it up.” She continued, “This year we decided to partner with the Ronald McDonald House to try to build up the event. Nonprofits partnering together and pulling our resources can make a bigger more successful event, and that is what we are trying to do. By collaborating, we are working together to benefit both organizations.” According to McDowell, the event promises to be a great evening of fun. For the cost of admission you can play casino games all evening and by winning “Crazy Cash,” you have opportunities to win great prizes. Throughout the evening you can play games, buy raffles tickets, 50/50 tickets, and ‘rip-offs.’ Tickets are on sale now through Eventbrite, at the Watson Inn, the Milton YMCA and also will be available at the door. For further information or questions call Bonnie at 570286-5636.

he Department of Health wants all Pennsylvanians to take steps to protect themselves by getting immunized against several serious illnesses that can be life-threatening, such as measles, hepatitis and whooping cough (pertussis). “It is essential that not only children are up-to-date on immunizations, but that adults are up-to-date on their immunizations as well,” Health Secretary Dr. Rachel Levine said. “Vaccines are the best way to protect yourself from a number of serious diseases. Getting your vaccinations can help protect others, such as those with compromised immune systems, who cannot get vaccinated “ Vaccines are necessary to protect infants, children and teens from serious childhood diseases. Even if you or your child have not previously been vaccinated, you can get vaccinated now. Vaccine-preventable

diseases can be very dangerous, may require hospitalization and can even result in death. A discussion with your doctor or your child’s doctor can help determine which vaccines are needed. In 2017, the provisional period in which students could attend school without their vaccinations was reduced from eight months to five days. Staying up-to-date with immunizations provides the best protection against disease. Vaccines are recommended for adults to prevent serious diseases such as hepatitis, influenza (flu), pneumonia, shingles and whooping cough. Other vaccine recommendations vary based on age, lifestyle, medical conditions, occupation, past vaccinations and travel destinations. The Department of Health offers immunization clinics year-round across the state. Any child or adult

County Hall Corner The Criminal Justice Taskforce By Larry Stout

our times a year there is a very special meeting held on the 6th Floor of the Third Street Plaza Building in Williamsport. It has representatives from the Lycoming County’s district attorney’s office, adult and juvenile probation departments, the department of public safety, the prison, re-entry service, and Clinton-Lycoming Mental Health Joinder, among others. Chairing this impressive assembly is Court of Common Pleas Judge Nancy Butts. It is named the Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF), and it was established in September of 2002 designed to join county stakeholders in the courts, corrections, law enforcement, health and human service agencies, victim services agencies, and other community-based organizations to provide a forum for communicating critical issues

and concerns. This collaborative effort is designed to evaluate, analyze, plan, and recommend action to assist key decision makers that would facilitate the efficiency and effectiveness of the overall system. Of course, this might sound like just another feel-good, talk-talk kind of group gathering, but that is far from the truth. The work of the CJFT is seen in the shift from a retributive penal system to a rehabilitative one. Many counties in the commonwealth believe that criminals must first and foremost be punished for their offenses. Lycoming County has taken the ap-

County Landfill has offered opportunities for GEO participants to develop job skills, which allows them to become skill certified. In addition, the participants are placed in an employment readiness group in which they practice resume building, interviewing skills, and are given the opportunity to use the ACT Work Keys program to gather information on aptitude. The results? In 2018, the average rate of employment at the beginning of the program was 17%. The average rate of employment upon completion of the program rose to 76%! This has been so impressive that the county’s efforts were recently recognized at a national conference in Boston on criminal justice. Yet, GEO Reentry Services success is a county-wide success, as it involved the courts, district attorney’s office, the probation department, and the collaborative effort of the entire Criminal Justice Task Force. Lycoming County is making some positive strides against crime and doing it with groundwork done by hard work through teamwork.

proach that the best method is to address the causes of the offenses and thus prevent future crimes. Yes, to be sure, there are dangerous folks who need to be locked away, but the majority of law-breakers have behavioral patterns that need, or the pattern will lead to more law violations. No better illustration of this can be found than the GEO Lycoming County Reentry Services. This was featured in this column two months ago (“A Solution that Works”), but space limitations prevented noting the incredible accomplishments of this work. Since many of those who choose this option over incarceration have alcohol or drug issues, they are tested every time they show up. If they show up at the door for any reason, they are given a breathalyzer test. In 2018, over 15,000 tests were administered, 99.6% of these came back negative. For those with substance abuse, 3,490 drug screens were administered, 85.3% were negative. What is even more impressive is the employment rate increase. The

Look for skirts in a medium weight denim with pockets and a higher waist. I love the styles that have buttons running down the front. Avoid midlength chambray skirts with a gathered waist, as they tend to look too casual and frumpy. Again, style is totally subjective, but I think we can all agree that sophisticated trumps sloppy no matter the outfit and no matter the age of the woman wearing it.

Faith Conversations…

Living with Nothing to Prove

J

esus knew exactly who He was, so He had the freedom of living with nothing to prove. When tempted in the wilderness, the enemy’s first two attacks had to do with Jesus proving He was the Son of God. If Jesus had taken the bait, His sin would have disqualified Him from the work He was about to accomplish. He would not have been free to serve. When hanging on the cross, people passing by and the religious leaders mocked Him by saying, “Let him come down from the cross and we will believe in him.” Again, the temptation was to prove Himself. He could

have done it. But because He had nothing to prove, He was free to serve you and me. Philippians 2:6-8 reveals Jesus’ secret of living with nothing to prove: “Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death — even death on a cross!” Because He knew who He was, He didn’t have to prove who He was. And that knowledge set Him free to serve.

Do you know who you are? If you don’t, then it is likely you are living with something to prove. And the point of today’s Faith Conversation is this: if you are driven to prove yourself to other people, then you are living in bondage. And because that bondage is subtle and insidious, you Tim may not even realize it. Hartzell It’s not easy to prove our worth to other people. That’s mainly because we tend to compare ourselves upward rather than downward. Listen, no matter how much power, money or success you have been given, there will always be someone who has been given more.

If you’re determined to prove that you are as successful and sophisticated as them, then you are in bondage to the rat race of keeping up with the Joneses. The reason we call it the rat race is because no one ever wins. Why do we do it? Well, nobody ever says this out loud, but we do it so we can prove our worth to others—and to ourselves. That desire causes us to live beyond the means of our money, time and energy. It imprisons us in debt, stress and anxiety. And no matter what we do, the Joneses always stay out front. Let me clarify something: there isn’t anything inherently wrong with wanting to succeed. Ambition can be very valuable. In fact, holy ambition is required of the followers of Jesus Christ. God wants us to do our best and to reach our full and holy potential. In I Corinthians 3:23-24 we read,

Zebras are BLACK & WHITE TAXES aren’t. Come to...

rat race! Here are some things you can do to be set free: First, give thanks in everything. I Thessalonians 5:18. Stop fretting over what you don’t have. Instead, be abundantly grateful for what you do have. Make a list—a long list. Look for blessings to be thankful for in every situation. If you can’t think of blessings to be thankful for, then you have been blinded by greed, jealousy and covetousness. Your journey toward freedom will need to begin with confession and repentance. Second, genuinely rejoice with others. Read I Corinthians 12:12-30. Does it irritate you when someone gets a big promotion and builds a new house and buys a new car? If so, then you are jealous — and that reveals the sin of selfishness. Selfishness and servanthood are incompatible because it’s hard to serve others when you’re stuck on yourself. Write the phrase, “it’s not about me” on post-it notes and stick them everywhere. Remember, you have nothing to prove — so you are free to rejoice with others when they are blessed! Third, choose the lowly task and the humble place. Read Luke 14:7-11 and John 13:1-17. Be grateful when you are given a chance to serve in a way that seems to be beneath your position in life. Accomplish the task with excellence and gusto as you do it as unto the Lord. Then God will exalt you! Fourth, Serve quietly. See how much servanthood you can get away with! Remember, your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you openly! Matthew 6:1-6. Again, He is the Exalter — so you can live with nothing to prove!

35 • Webb Weekly April 3, 2019

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” God wants us to give it all we’ve got, not so we can impress the Joneses, but so that we can be free to serve Him — and each other. So this conversation isn’t against ambition and hard work and success. Quite to the contrary, this conversation is about knowing enough about yourself to be set free from the rat race. Back to Philippians chapter two. Verse 8 reveals that God is the exalter, “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name...” The reason we are free to serve is because God is the exalter. My friend, you do not need to exalt yourself. There is only one exalter — and when He does the exalting, it is beautiful and powerful! If you are always running behind the Joneses in the rat race, then I have good news for you: You don’t have to prove your worth to anyone, not even yourself. God has already defined your worth! He has chosen you for eternity, and right now Jesus is preparing a place for you! God has fully adopted you into His family—an adoption so complete that He calls you “a co-heir with Jesus Christ” and invites you to call Him, “Abba, Father”! Read Romans 8:15-17. He has filled you with His Holy Spirit! He has ordained you to be a member of the royal priesthood and has granted you gifts and power to accomplish the holy kingdom work He has specifically prepared for you to do. That’s who you are! And when you know who you are, you are free to serve! No more

The Roving Sportsman… Calling All Gobblers! By Jon Pries

I

n just a few short weeks, the Youth Spring Gobbler Season will be held on April 20th, and a week later the month-long regular season will begin on April 27th. We still have time to work on fine-tuning our calling techniques to lure a spring gobbler into range. Most folks, especially as school students, probably were subjected to learning a musical instrument of some sort, be it a piano, clarinet, violin or were perhaps part of a school band. Hours upon hours went into practicing the instrument of choice, and more time spent in these practice sessions yielded a greater proficiency. Well, the very same is true of the various turkey calls that are at your disposal. Whether it is a box call, a slate or pot call, or

the numerous variations of mouth calls produced today, the more time you take now to practice the various sounds you need to make, the better your chances of fooling an old Tom. From yelps to purrs, putts and clucks, you need to become proficient and comfortable with all sounds, including the gobbling of a mature bird and the kee-kee-run of young gobblers, or jakes. The good news is that you really don’t have to be perfect. If you have spent much time in the woods, particularly during the fall turkey hunting season, you no doubt have come across some pretty awkward sounds made by turkeys. Several times I have heard a “turkey” call in the woods that was so out of the ordinary that I was sure it was another hunter in the area. Then, shortly thereafter, a real live hen turkey would walk

greater distance, but most of your calls should be soft and relaxed to sound more natural. Quit while you are ahead, meaning that when the gobbler is coming your way in response to your calls, take a break. He already knows exactly where you are and you are much better off letting him become curious and remain interested in just where you are. Don’t spook him off by over calling. Put down your call and focus on getting your gun ready! Finally, resist the temptation to go to your favorite hunting location before opening day to make a few calls to find out if there are any receptive gobblers there. All too often all you end up doing is educating the birds in the area to your presence, reducing your chance of success once the season opens. Yes, you need to practice and fine-tune your calls, but do so at home — not anywhere that you or anyone else intends to hunt!

into range, making that same sound — it was her all the time! It is a big mistake to use a calling sequence similar to what you see on various outdoor TV shows. What I mean is that the show is edited down to 20 minutes of show time from hours of actual time in the field videoing the hunt. During the 20 minutes that airs, it appears that to be successful, you must call continually. But, in reality, there is a lot of time spent in between calls if it is to sound authentic. It simply does not sound realistic when you call continually. Instead, make a series of calls, and then pause for 15-20 minutes before making more calls. Vary the calls and series of sounds rather than be redundant in your presentation. Real live turkeys in the woods do not just yelp all the time, nor do they purr or cluck continually. Mix up the sounds and vary the volume. It is OK to make a louder call on occasion in an attempt to reach a

Forest openings with heavy brush and young saplings are good brood habitat while dense saplings are used for drumming and courtship. Mature forests provide winter cover as well as food like nuts, buds, and fruit. Unfortunately for grouse — and a number of other animal and bird species — Pennsylvania has had a huge loss of young forests. Much of Pennsylvania’s forests average about 100 years old with only about eight percent of our forests being considered young

forests. If habitat loss was not enough we must also now contend with disease; more specifically West Nile virus. It showed up in this country in 1999 and is now in Pennsylvania. Humans and animals including the ruffed grouse are susceptible. West Nile virus, of course, is carried by mosquitoes; the scientific name — Culex restuans is the mosquito that prefers to target birds. Other birds like crows and jays have also suffered high mortality rates from West Nile virus. To further compound the problem, we have had heavy rains and frequent flooding or high water leading to a big

MURRAY

increase in potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. Those of us who have campers down along the Susquehanna River were keenly aware of the increased mosquito problem; it was so bad many of us pulled our campers out early. To make matters worse, our greatly depleted bat population due to white-nose syndrome has allowed for a greater infestation of mosquitoes. Wow, talk about the “perfect storm.” In the meantime, the commission will continue to focus on habitat improvement to help offset the added strain from West Nile virus. I’ll try to keep you posted as new information becomes available.

unfortunately, even those unexpected flushes seem to be occurring less and less in recent years. The decrease in grouse sightings has not gone unnoticed, and the Pennsylvania Game Commission has been taking a much closer look at what’s happening to the grouse population here in Pennsylvania. From the information that I have been able to gather from recent research and a number of written articles, there seem to be two major causes for our grouse decline — loss of required habitat and disease. So what do grouse require when it comes to habitat? Actually grouse

Sporting Matters with Spence…

Pick-Up Games

S

pring has finally sprung, and the outdoorsmen are gearing up. Winter sports are over as basketball and wrestling are being replaced by others. Youngsters from the area are getting ready for their baseball and softball runs. Change is in the air, and this is a beautiful time of year. The NCAA Basketball Tournament is my absolute favorite. My bracket has officially busted, but I am still enjoying all of the games. I don’t particularly have any team that I am rooting for. I simply love watching good basketball in March. Congrats to the gal who is first place in our poll. She picked her winners based on mascots and team colors. Then there’s that guy who fills out 20 brackets. All of them are different, but he still takes credit for an upset. Soon it will be the Masters, and the first major tournament will officially kick off the golf season. I am totally glued to the television

those four days and lock myself in the basement. I can’t get to my phone right now. Please leave a message. I personally do not Jamie know how much Spencer I will play this year. My desire and excitement for the game comes and goes. It’s an expensive sport, and it requires a great deal of time. I do believe that golf will be a very hot topic with our upcoming local election. A lot has changed the past 30 years. It is less common today to see a group of children outside participating in what we call “pickup” games. The norm has become for adolescents to play in organized sports driven by parents. I chimed in before on how technology and digital devices like iPhones, iPads, and gaming systems have

also contributed to the problem. My column on Fortnite is still trending. Different era. Yes. It’s very frustrating. I had a great childhood, and I played quite a bit with my neighborhood friends. We competed in a variety of sports and games. I vividly remember the intense whiffle ball battles or the three on three showdowns on my buddy’s court. We spent a great deal of time outdoors without any influence. My mates and I would play until the sun would set and pick things up the following morning. Do you have a similar experience? The demise of these “pick-up” games is a shame. Unfortunately, today’s organized sports are very political and sometimes put way to much pressure on our kids. They are also very expensive. So we should all encourage our children to play more of these neighborhood games. They allow a more natural development of fitness and fun. “Pick-up” games also promote solid teamwork and communication.

Kids need to have a positive experience when it comes to sports. The more opportunities to participate with friends will only promote these expereinces. Our children need to take part in these neighborhood “pick-up” games, away from their parents, coaches, and travel teams. Let them grow up and get a taste. Sending your eight-year-old son or daughter to specialized training sessions three or four days a week might actually cause them harm. Kids get burned out. I’ve seen it happen hundreds of times. Cheers.
