hank you to everyone that has reached out to share a special story about Father John Manno. It’s amazing how many lives he affected and touched in a most positive way. There is no doubt in my mind he will continue to do the Lord’s work through all of us. A special thank you to Father Charles Cummings for reaching out to me. He shared Father John Manno’s funeral homily via email. Father Cummings and Father John were best friends their whole lives. They grew up together in Williamsport. Father Cummings also shared a picture of the “3rd Street Gang” from back in the day. If you would like to read Father Cummings’ homily honoring Father John it can be found with this week’s edition at webbweekly.com along with the picture. I apologize it was just a little too lengthy to print, and the picture will view much better online. A Webb Weekly salute to Loyalsock Township grad Alessia Antonacci. The young lady will continue her education and serve our Nation at West Point. It’s no easy feat for anyone, especially a young lady, to be accepted at West Point; they only take about 250 women a year. Not to mention you’re competing against the best of the best from around the Nation to attend
Happy 50th Anniversary to Smokey and Pam Stover.
Congrats to Alessia on her graduation and acceptance to West Point.
the military academy along the Hudson. Alessia met all qualifications with flying colors. Alessia could have attended Harvard or the college of her choice. But wanted to follow in her Father’s footsteps and serve in the military for our great Nation. It does my red, white, and blue heart good to share this story with you. Congratulations to Alessia on earning this great honor. West Point is getting a good one. Go get them, girl! What a great season the South Williamsport baseballing Mounties recently completed. A district championship, final four finish in the state tournament and memories of a season that’ll last a lifetime. See Scott Lowery’s story beginning on page 8. As you know, baseball has always been near and dear to the Webb family. My Father had an unbelievable baseball mind. Some of the best baseball times of my life
South’s Pete Sinibaldi turns two at Historic Bowman Field.
were when Coach Webb managed my friends and me during our Senior League days in Southside. One of my Dad’s top guns on the mound at the time was Petey Sinibaldi. Or Tweety Petey as Coach Webb referred to him. Everybody always had a nickname, but that’s a story for another day. Fast forward to 2019, and there’s another Pete Sinibaldi playing baseball for Southside. See, Tweety Petey went on to marry another good friend of mine Kathy Lynch. The Family can now be very proud of their son Peter’s baseball, athletic, and academic accomplishments. Peter will be continuing his education at Penn State University. Sorry, you know I often get off track a little bit. A tip of my 1981 Southside Senior Little League cap to Manager Smokey Stover and his public school state champion South Williamsport Mountaineers. This is also
a story for another day, but again a PIAA final four consisted of one of our small local high schools and three private, sports recruiting, non-community-based cheaters by the rules. Smokey Stover has won 680 games during his coaching career. By the numbers, it’s 448 Ws at Lock Haven University, 90 at Jersey Shore High School and 42 as Skipper of the Mounties. Thank you to my good friend Chris Massey for providing me the numbers. In his last three seasons, Smokey has been like a fine wine just getting a little better each season with age. Three District Championship appearances, two District Titles, capping it off with this year’s Webb Weekly public school AA State Championship. A much more important number recently when it comes to Smokey is 50. As in he and his wife Pam just celebrated their 50th anniversary. Happy Anniversary! That’s truly a lot of wins. And a pretty darn good second week of June this year. God Bless America.

Summer Pot Lucks
E
ven though we now have Andrea (pg. 24) providing amazing recipes for us, that doesn’t mean that I am going to leave you high and dry on the recipe front. We are coming into picnic season and that means finding something to take along for pot lucks! I found these two great recipes that sound amazing to contribute for your pot lucks this summer. One savory, one sweet, you are totally covered for the summer! Chipotle Creamed Corn on the Grill This gorgeous side dish couldn’t be easier to make, and it couldn’t be more delicious, either! Grilled corn is topped with Mexican table cream, chipotle peppers and queso fresco for a dish that can only be described as “total yum.” Ingredients: • 1 bag (16 oz) frozen sweet corn • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil • 1 cup Mexican table cream (or half-andhalf) • 2 chipotle peppers in adobo sauce, finely chopped • 1/2 cup queso fresco (Mexican fresh cheese) or feta, crumbled • 1/2 cup cilantro or parsley, finely chopped • Salt and pepper to taste Directions: Preheat grill to high. Toss frozen sweet corn into a large, foil

pan. Drizzle with vegetable oil and stir to coat. Place on hot grill and cook until corn is sizzling hot and a few pieces are slightly browned, about 10-15 Steph minutes. Nordstrom Pour Mexican table cream over the corn; stir to coat. Fold chipotle peppers into the mixture. Sprinkle with queso fresco and parsley or cilantro. Serve and enjoy! Tip: If you can’t find these Mexican ingredients at your store, substitute half and half for the table cream, and mild feta cheese for the queso fresco. Inside Out S’mores Bars The delicious taste of s’mores... inside out! These are easy to put together to enjoy any time of year. Ingredients: • Eggs, oil and water called for on brownie mix box • 1 box Betty Crocker™ Brownie Mix Fudge family-size (for 9x13-inch pan) • 7 sheets honey graham crackers • nonstick spray • 2 cups mini marshmallows Directions: Preheat oven to 350° F. Coat a 9 x 13 pan with nonstick cooking spray.
Prepare Fudge Brownie Mix according to package directions with eggs, oil, and water. Pour half of brownie mixture into pan. Top with sheets of graham crackers, breaking to fit as necessary. Sprinkle marshmallows on top of graham crackers, covering completely. Drizzle remaining half of brownie batter over marshmallows. Bake for 25-30 minutes, until edges are crisp and center is set. Note: The typical toothpick test will not work for these because of the marshmallow middle, but the top brownies should be solid to the touch, not gooey, when done. Bake for an extra 5 to 10 minutes, if needed for doneness (checking after 5 minutes). Remove from oven and let cool for 15 minutes to set completely. Slice into bars and serve.

Junior League of Williamsport Celebrates 90 Years
S
ince 1929 the Junior League of Williamsport has been a driving force behind initiatives that have significantly contributed to the health of our community. The members of the League reflect a wide range of backgrounds, interests, and professional pursuits that work together to identify unmet needs and create bridges to facilitate change. For 90 years, the League trains its members to become active civic leaders who make a lasting impact on the community. The Beginning In 1926 the Junior Charity Guild was organized in Williamsport through the efforts of Mrs. Edgar Munson and Mrs. Kathryn Mosser, with twelve charter members. By 1928, the Guild had established the Protective Home to house juveniles committed by court order. The Guild provided all financial aid except maintenance allowed by the court. In 1929, the Guild was accepted into the Association of Junior Leagues of America, Inc. — sponsored by the Pittsburgh League — becoming the Junior League of Williamsport. The League organized braille classes and raised funds for glasses for blind Lycoming County residents. The first prenatal clinic was started at Williamsport Hospital with the League providing complete financial support and volunteer aid. The League members who rolled bandages for the Visiting Nurses Association also started a sewing group for the Williamsport Hospital. League
members assisted the Crippled ’Children’s Society with the transportation of patients. Since 1929 the Junior League of Williamsport has partnered with dozens of organizations to address community needs and make a positive impact. Some of these partners include: American Red Cross, Williamsport Hospital, Visiting Nurses’ Association, Crippled Children’s Society, U.S.O., Civil Defense, Historical Society Museum, Pennsylvania Welfare Society, YMCA, Williamsport Hospital Auxiliary, Golden Age Club, Divine Providence Hospital, Family and Children’s Service Agency, James V. In addition to the countless volunteer hours, in 90 years, the Junior League of Williamsport has donated over $270,000 to support the efforts of local organizations. The most notable of those donations include $25,000 for Youth Home in 1968, $15,000 Millionaire’s Row Historic Homes in 1978, $10,000 to Wise Options for Women in 1980, $95,000 to the Children’s Discovery Workshop in 1985-1987, $50,000 Capitol Theatre renovation and $15,000 James V. Brown library children’s room renovation in 1990. Junior League of Williamsport President, Marisa Rau, shares, “We are an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving our community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. It is our vision that the Junior League of Williamsport is a regional resource and advocate committed to improving the quality of life for children and their families.” To aid in fulfilling that mission, she adds, “We are at an exciting time in our organizational history. The Junior League of Williamsport’s greatest strength has been to continuously reevaluate the needs of our community and adapt our efforts to meet those needs. With 46 active members and 110 sustaining and emeritus members heading into our 90th year, we are focusing our efforts on addressing the challenges of food security and mental health.” For more information on how you can partner with the Junior League of Williamsport to address these needs in Lycoming County, contact info@ jlwilliamsport.org or (570) 360-9884.

F
or even the most skilled climbers, scaling a mountain is a laborious task. The ascent is slow and calculated, one step at a time, not looking back at where you’ve been but giving full concentration to the summit that lay ahead. But even for a Mountaineer, that zenith is often allusive. The South Williamsport High School baseball team experienced a fatal dose of climber’s bends when their quest for a state baseball championship was dashed on a Pine Grove, Pennsylvania hillside by Devon Prep 3-1 in a Class AA semi-final matchup last Tuesday. The gritty band of Mounties had dropped the first game of the 2019 season 1-0 to Hughesville and ended it with the hard-fought loss to the Tide. But in between they recorded 18 wins, a HAC-II league championship, a District IV title, recorded the first two state playoff victories in the program’s history and won the hearts of their community’s fans. Unlike there being no joy in Mudville when the mighty Casey had struck out, while there was momentary disappointment that the dream was not fulfilled, pride and
accomplishment filled the hearts of parents and fans and after the sting of defeat has dissipated it will be the same for the players and coaches whose efforts combined to make the 2019 high school baseball season a most memorable one on the south side of the river. While the team was led by pitcher Tripp Breen, whose transformation from an unsettled freshman to a senior leader, hard-throwing stud headed to Division 1 St. Bonaventure grew every time he took the mound and veteran coach Smokey Stover, who seemed to mellow from his vociferous conversion of his college days at Lock Haven University to a more melodious mentor condoning rock music at team practices and bus rides, the role players on this overachieving team were many. Senior Logan Burkett provided a near perfect pitching complement to Breen, served as the team’s cleanup hitter and was a defensive catalyst at first base. Shortstop Pete Sinibaldi stood taller than his 6’3 frame expanding his range in the field and providing key hits throughout the season. Second baseman Hunter Finn, the teams only four-year varsity starter had the biggest adjustment to make to a new

stealers, and his bat was a key in the Mountie attack that included a grand slam home run. Left-fielder Nate Persun’s confidence and performance grew as the season progressed, earning a key role in Stover’s everyday lineup. Right fielder Cole Brewer’s defensive process rounded out the all underclassman outfield. Freshman third baseman Landon Lorson, the projected starting quarterback for this fall’s South Williamsport football team, displayed a rifle arm and added some timely hitting in handling chores at the hot corner. Sophomore outfielder Ryan Rischoff ’s developing bat earned him increased playing time as the season progressed and classmate Trent Hampton saw action backing up Burkett at first base and Harding behind the plate. Freshman infielder Grant Bachman showed flashes of promise and also recorded limited innings on the mound. The statistical achievements of this South Williamsport squad have been well documented, but their grit and determination cannot be recorded on a stat sheet. They didn’t have gaudy offensive numbers but were masters at finding ways to win the close games.
Prior to the Devon Prep loss, they had won six consecutive one-run games and nine straight games decided by one or two runs. The South Williamsport baseball program is not a one-year wonder. This season marked the Mountaineers 32nd straight winning season and playoff appearance. While other school teams had advanced further in state competition, none could match their winning consistency. Yet their lone district title was achieved in 2002. Indeed, this year’s team was not the school’s most talented, but Coach Stover and his staff were able to challenge, convince and led a group of eager teenagers to baseball heights many did not think possible during those cold March days of indoor training at the cramped Rommelt Building batting facility. The hard-fought end came by the same similar fate previously felt by other District Four schools chasing state championship dreams, succumbing to private/charter school squads not encumbered by the PIAA restrictions placed upon their public school brethren. Of the final four Class AA teams trying to reach the

title, game South was the only public school team still left standing. Leave no doubt, Devon Prep was a talented well-coached team and based upon their 260 student enrollment size they are a Class AA team. But the all-boys prep school had more than 10% of their enrolled students dressed in baseball uniforms crowding the first base dugout to its limits. Somewhat ironically, on the same day the game was played state representative Aaron Bernstine was introducing a bill to the Pennsylvania State Legislature which would redefine PIAA state championship tournaments to create separate public and nonpublic tournament brackets with the winning schools then meeting for a final state championship. But that is a topic for another day. As South Williamsport’s large and faithful fan base gave their young heroes a final appreciative round of applause for what they had accomplished it was not about the future, it was about the past three months and the accompanying pride that had been nurtured. South Williamsport had inched its way up this playoff mountain by doing it one careful step at a time. It was the little things that had gotten
them there. Pinpoint pitching, timely hitting, improving defensive and a growing belief in what Coach Stover was instilling in them were all trademarks of the product displayed on the field. But on that final Tuesday, some of those little things betrayed them, beginning with a long bus ride that delayed their arrival in Pine Grove setting back the game’s scheduled starting time. A defensive lapse covering a base, Devon Prep’s ability to hit two-strike pitches, not being able to move base runners or deliver the much-needed base hit all contributed to the 3-1 loss. So that Tuesday semi-final game was not followed up with a hoped-for Friday visit to Penn State for the state championship game. But I somehow have a feeling that when Pete Sinibaldi and Hunter Finn arrive on the Penn State main campus to begin their collegiate studies this fall, they may walk by Lubrano Park and think about what might have been. If they do, they should do so with a smile on their faces and joy in their hearts about what they helped their teammates and the 2019 South Williamsport baseball team accomplish. Hundreds of others will remember what they did.

two-year old boy wearing a big smile and an “I don’t care” expression was picked up on West Fourth Street late yesterday afternoon by a “Gazette and Bulletin” reporter. The little fellow was unable to tell his name, address or anything else. All he did while questioned by the reporter was smile. Sensing he was lost, the reporter was on to City Hall, when the mother of the boy, Mrs. C.L. Campbell of 810 Third Street, accosted the reporter near the Lycoming Hotel and asked what he was doing with her son. “Taking him to City Hall,” was the answer, telling where he had picked up the lad. Just at that time, a motorcycle officer who with other officers were
searching for the boy, appeared on the scene. The mother when informed of the identity of the man with her son, was quite profuse with her thanks. While the mother was in a store shopping, the little fellow slipped out the door and made his way onto West Fourth Street to Elmira, crossing the street intersections safely. Here, John Brachbill, a mail carrier saw him, and was making his way for the police station to tell them of the whereabouts of the little boy when the reporter took the lad in tow. The mother reported the loss of her two-year old son to City Hall, feeling for sure that the little fellow had been kidnapped. An alarm was sent out and police were scouring the business section when the news reported sensing a story, beat the police to the pick up.

homemade biscuits. My cousin, Lindsay Clark, has been a big fan of strawberry jelly too since our momma’s are sisters and we all grew up on this stuff. I’ve given her a few each year of my jellies, but this year she wants me to show her how to make it, and we are gonna go pick together. Nothin like pickin, and an afternoon in the kitchen with your soul sister. My favorite pickin spot is Green Barn Berry Farm in Muncy, and Berried Treasure in Linden. Two great spots that are sure to have wonderful berries for you and your family. Enjoy and good pickin! Strawberry Shortcake Kabobs 1 container of strawberries, washed and

I just had a lady at church come up and say to me that she used my Shortcake recipe for a bunch of extra strawberries left that she didn’t know what to do with, and enjoy it so much. The ingredients are everything that should be handy right in your kitchen. I then put a spin on Strawberry Shortcake by adding a Kabob twist to it! Oh man do I love me some Kabobs!! The things you can put on a stick to eat. Then, last but not least, my favorite beyond any other strawberry recipe out there. Homemade Strawberry Jelly! Another delicious favorite I grew up on! Loving it on my PB and J, toast in the mornin’, and momma’s

My husband and I joke that our marriage is old enough to drive, because we still see it, and treat it, as the “third person” in our relationship thanks to Father John. Statistically, people who get married young (I was 22, my husband was 25), end up divorcing, and thankfully we’ve beaten those odd. Father John put our marriage and us on a solid path and gave us the tools to build it up in faith, trust, and love. There are people all over this valley with Father John stories and reminisces. This led to children, which was a major shift, and put a lot of pressure on our relationship. There have been a lot of prayers for patience and understanding. As parents, my husband and I have less time to devote to being husband and wife, as our Mommy and Daddy roles have taken precedent. But, we know that as the children get older, we’ll be able to reconnect to our marriage since we left it strong. We also continue to check-in on it and are looking forward to the

The Imperial By John F. Shireman
T
his article is about an automobile built in Williamsport called the Imperial. In October 1905 N. Barrow Bubb started a garage. In November 1905, his two sons Harry A. and Nathan B. convinced their father to rent them the garage. This garage became to be known as the
Williamsport Auto Exchange selling Reos, Whites, and Premier automobiles. In the fall of 1906, the brothers began building a prototype automobile that was designed by C.P. Van Ferls, manager for the Williamsport Auto Exchange. In early 1907, another firm was started to help secure funding to build the prototype. The firm was named the Williamsport
Engineering Company. The main investors being the Bubb brothers and their uncle Harry C. Bubb. The prototype was completed and tested in the spring of 1907. In August 1907 the Williamsport Engineering Company and the Williamsport Auto Exchange became the Imperial Motor Car Company. The Imperial was a four-seat roadster (convertible) with a 5.5 liter four cylinder water-

cooled engine built by Rutenber. The Imperial had a three speed manual transmission with shaft drive, and a 108-inch wheelbase. The Imperial weighed 2,400 lbs. and sold for $2,650. It must be noted from another reference source I have stated that Imperial came with a 35 HP four cylinder engine built by Milwaukee. It is believed that 50 Imperials at best were produced before the company went out of business in September 1908.
Honda Robotic Lawn Mower
Say hello to Miimo, the robotic lawn mower from Honda.
SPECIAL OFFER
500
$
INSTALLATION CREDIT Purchase any Miimo mower between 2-1-19 and 7-31-19 and receive up to $500 credit towards installation costs.*
Two Miimo Models Depending on your lawn size and complexity, choose between Miimo HRM310, covering up to .37 acres and Miimo HRM520, covering up to .75 acres. Both Miimo models can operate on lawns with slopes of up to 25°.
Miimo is designed to cut autonomously and automatically, resulting in a perfectly manicured lawn with minimal interaction and maximum convenience. Miimo is so intelligent, it even returns to its docking station when it senses the battery running low. Thanks, Miimo!
Three Cutting Patterns Miimo offers three main programmable cutting patterns: random for large, open areas, directional, for narrower obstaclefree areas, or mixed for large, complex yards. The result: an even and consistent cut with less stress on the lawn.
SPECIAL FINANCING
Special Blades Designed for durability, Miimo’s blades spin clockwise or counterclockwise, decreasing wear and increasing life span, and will swing back into the blade disc if a hard object is struck.
360° Sensors Miimo is equipped with advanced 360° awareness sensors. These detect any lifting or tilting, stopping the blades automatically. Area sensors keep Miimo within your lawn’s boundary wires and bump sensors detect obstacles upon contact.
Recharging System With its intelligent design, Miimo automatically returns to its docking station when the battery is running low. Miimo’s long life lithium-ion battery not only offers a quiet power source, but it is also very cost efficient to run.
Day & Night Modes Because of its quiet timer that reduces blade and wheel speed, Miimo can be programmed to work unnoticed through the night, meaning you wake up to a perfect lawn every day.

County Special Olympic athletes. A memorial service will be held for all deceased members, allowing us to remember all the good times, hard work and dedication they provided during their involvement in Special Olympics. In addition to the service, there will be a memorial table and wall set up allowing individuals to write the names of deceased Special Olympic members and place pictures, flowers and candles in their remembrance. Wristbands will be handed out and crosses will be available for the participants. According to Pat Turner, Leadership Team Mentor, Special Olympic members of the Athlete Leadership Team, Sean Brink, Chris Conklin, Steve Huyck, Cathy Keenan, Ryan Kenny and Roger Turner “have been working hard for months in putting this event together. Athlete Leadership member Huyck came up with the idea and all members have been involved by attending monthly meetings and offering suggestions in order to make this event a success”.

County Hall Corner: Good Job and Goodbye By Larry Stout
I
t is sometimes a tedious task to cover the Lycoming County Commissioner’s Meetings, but Thursday, June 13th was not one of those times. In fact, to be honest, I personally was never more proud of my county than I was through that meeting. It began with a presentation of Job Well Done pins awarded to 109 county employees and law enforcement officers that supported President Trump’s visit on May
20th. The Montoursville Police Chief Jeffrey Gyurina was notified of the presidential visit at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 14th, and less than an hour later it was on social media! Amazingly, some twenty different departments ranging from the Pennsylvania State Police, local police departments, sheriff ’s department, and county detectives all coordinated together seamlessly. River Valley Transit was called upon to provide transportation to avoid massive traffic jams. Coordination also took place with the Williamsport Regional Airport,
County 911, area fire chiefs, the Civil Air Patrol, and Penn College. The logistics and integration of so many moving parts are almost impossible to imagine, yet everyone agreed it went off seamlessly. Even the Secret Service was impressed by how well Lycoming County protected and provided for the President and his family and for the thousands who came out to see him. And the general public does deserve a pat on the back. Law enforcement noted that the crowd was incredibly well behaved. When the President boarded Air Force One, it would be natural that there would be a mad dash of people fighting to get on the buses. However, the State Police noted that the people simply lined up and patiently waited their turn. And even more

amazing, when the cleaning crew came by the next day — there was nothing to clean up! That is quite a compliment to the 2530,000 folks who came to see and hear the President. Another recognition was for the retirement of George Heiges, director of the Lycoming County Veteran Affairs Department. Since graduating from Montgomery Area High School in 1980, George has always been serving. From twenty-one years with the USAF, including action in Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield, to seven years with Louisiana law enforcement that included the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, he found his way back to Lycoming County where he has served for eight years.

very proud of the fact that there has never been a vet in Lycoming County who has died waiting to see a doctor. His office is a shrine to those who he has helped in one way or another. George bragged that he had the best job in the world — helping vets. It was with great reluctance; he is stepping down due to a serious back problem. He will be sorely missed. To 109 dedicated public servants who at the last minute went above and beyond to protect and serve at a presidential rally, to the thousands of attendees who acted respectively and responsibly, to an individual who has honored those who have served our military for the past decade in an exemplary way — it makes a person proud to be part of Lycoming County.

It is impossible to describe how transformational George Heiges has been to the county’s Veteran Affairs Office. In his administration, the support for veterans has more than doubled. In fact, Lycoming County has brought in more funds for veterans than any county in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania — each year for the last five years! And it is not because Lycoming County has more vets as, for example, Bucks County has four times the number of our county, yet their benefit reports are less than half of Lycoming County. George Heiges and his staff just work four times harder. But it goes beyond the money; it was also about honor. He worked on bringing back the Veterans Parade to the county. He is

race in Spain was incredible; my mom placed fifth in her age group, and I placed first in mine. It was such an incredible experience. I didn’t have a specific Aquathlon coach, but my high school swim coach, and my high school track coaches, along with my mom were in full support and pushed me every day for the race. All of my teammates on the track and in the pool along with my friends and family were so supportive, and I am so beyond thankful I had this opportunity and support system because without them I would not be where I am.” Her father, Shaun Smith, said, “I think one of the toughest obstacles for Lydia is always practicing for two sports. Lydia has participated in sprint Triathlons including the Lumberjack here in town but always had a hard time fitting in enough training for the bike. The Aquathlon afforded her the ability to concentrate on the two sports where she competes for the Williamsport High School and The Williamsport Area Swim Club.” Lydia is the youngest of five children and has been exposed to many different types of sports and races. Her Mom, Sue, is an assistant cross country and swim coach and has competed in triathlons for years. The Aquathlon gave them something to do together.

third- and fourth-place, respectively. The Aquathlon is one of the simplest and most accessible forms of multisport. It consists of two portions: a swimming and running portion. The official distances during Smith’s world championship were a 1000 meter swim (about 0.62 miles), followed by a 5K run (3 miles). Last November, Smith qualified for the world event after competing in Miami’s Aquathlon. This year, Smith was the District II/IV Class AAA Cross Country Individual Champion, plus won three gold medals in the District II/IV Class AAA swim meet, earning trips to the PIAA State Championship in both sports. She also is one of the top point-getters on the spring track and field team. “I got into aquathlons just last summer actually,” Lydia told Webb Weekly. “My family and I were doing Triathlon nationals in Cleveland, and my mom looked up triathlon races without the bike portion (because the bike is definitely our weakest part), and she found this race called Aquathlon. So we quickly signed up and found ourselves in Miami, Florida for ITU nationals. Which my mom placed second in her age group, and I placed first in mine. That is how we qualified for our race in Pontevedra, Spain. The

The Roving Sportsman… The Season of Birth – The Season of Deathbeen seen out in fields by themselves as they By Jon Pries
F
or all of us who enjoy the out of doors and watching nature at its best, springtime is a wonderful season to observe some of the greatest moments in the world of wildlife. It is the time of year when all manners of birds and mammals give birth and nurture their young — replenishing and regenerating their species. It makes these weeks throughout the process even more rewarding to spend time outdoors, observing nature and their young. Already, throughout Lycoming County, I have witnessed and heard reports of newly born ducklings, turkey poults, and now numerous sightings of freshly born fawns. Probably the most often seen are the new fawns as they wobble and rock back and forth trying to establish their balance so they can walk to the does that gave birth to them and take nourishment from the nutrient-rich milk that she provides. Black bears have been out of their winter dens for some time and provide one of the more unique sights when a mother bear shows up with her cubs, usually numbering from one to four. It is quite a sight to see a Mama bear appear with four cubs trailing behind her. It is not unusual, when there are three or four cubs, to have one, in particular, that is noticeably the runt of the litter. For the last several weeks, hen turkeys have
feed throughout the day gaining nourishment with clover leaves, grasses and the occasional insect or two. And, now they are beginning to appear with a string of young poults in trail. A family of young poults can number from two or three to almost a dozen and are funny to watch as they scurry back and forth, always under the watchful eye of the mother hen. She is usually standing tall, head stretched up looking for any airborne or ground traveling predators. If approached by any bird or animal that is interested in snacking on her young, she can be very aggressive and quite lethal. To the watchful eye, both wood duck and mallard duck young have been visible over the last several weeks as well. The Mother Hen is always in close proximity as the busy little ducklings are swimming all around strengthening their legs and flapping across the surface of the water as they strengthen their wings. Within a matter of just a few weeks, young turkey poults will be able to fly up to lower branches of trees to avoid ground predators. Ducklings will also be able to fly to safety after an amazingly short amount of time strengthening their legs and wings. It is an amazing transition to watch a newly born fawn wobble and try to gain its “feet” until, in just a few days, he is quite adept at following behind his mother. For the first few weeks of his life, he has no scent. It is

environment for young of all shapes and sizes. If one of the young in a litter is a runt, these first few weeks will either allow him to become stronger and survive or wither away if it is unable to keep up with the rest of the gang. And then there is the predation that occurs among all of the young of the species. Hawks, owls, and eagles will be targeting young birds and mammals. Coyotes, bobcats, raccoons and even black bear are very active this time of year predating on young birds and animals. It is an interesting fact that black bear are recorded as taking more young fawns than any of our other predators. Yes, ‘tis the season of birth and of death, and it can provide some very entertaining observations, along with a few grim sightings as well.

part of his defense against ground predators. Additionally, his mother teaches him to hide, usually in tall grass, and all curled up in a ball while lying as motionless as possible to avoid predation. It is quite amazing to come across a fawn and look closely to watch only the slow movement of his nostrils, as all of his other body parts remain perfectly still. Yes, it is an amazing time of the year, as the new crop of young come into the world and romp and run about as they quickly grow in their first few months of existence and sooner than you can imagine become independent of their parents. But, along with this period of joy and pleasantness comes the reality of the other part of the equation — that death is also prevalent this time of year. An excessive amount of cold temperatures, combined with too much rain, can be a deadly

If you’re feeling hesitant getting hearing aids because of a stigma, you shouldn’t. I can hear things I could never hear before with my new hearing aids, like the turning signals on my car, and this is not my first set of hearing aids. I got my hearing aids at a discounted rate through a program my insurance offers called Tru Hearing. They referred me into Artisan Hearing Technologies and I could not be more pleased. The customer service here compared to the last place I was at is 100% better! I like going to a place where the people are kind and it’s not all about the money. I would recommend Artisan Hearing to anyone who has a hearing loss. ~Deeann Weaver

many showing up in and around towns and housing developments? Warden Cole quickly pointed out to me that, “artificial feeding such as bird feeders, compost piles, and even cat and dog food dishes all contribute to bears coming in search of food.” Consider this, the bear that was just captured in this incident according to Ray Kontz of the Muncy Police Dept. was most likely the same bear they had been getting complaints about this past week. According to Kontz, the bear had been eating at bird feeders on Broadway and Quarry Avenue in Muncy earlier this past week, and the day this whole scenario took place that same bear had been spotted at the Glade Run Apartments area. You may want to bring your bird feeders in for a while.

go. “When we began the tournament we were using the funds to support youth football, but then expanded into other sports,” explained Reaser. “The money we distribute is directed at youth sports in the Warrior Run area from eighth grade on down. We have a standing committee that reviews the various funding requests we receive, and we try to help as many groups as we can. Although the proceeds may differ from year to year we generally are able to distribute between $7,000 and $10,000 every year back into the community for youth sports.” Football has been Fisher’s life since the day he departed Warrior Run, but his roots are still firmly planted there.
“Since the day I left the area in 1981, I’ve said I will always give back to where I came from. I wouldn’t be here and have had the opportunities I’ve been given in football if it wouldn’t have been for a bunch of young youth sports coaches who helped me along the way. My Dad farmed, and he couldn’t take me to every game because of the work he had to do. But I had a lot of people invest in me and help me. To me, that’s what it is all about — give back, help out in any way you can. Whatever you can do to help us, we are going to make it right within the community.” Fisher and Reaser would welcome your support of this year’s Rick Foresman tournament!

Ricky was very much involved in youth sports and was a youth football coach. Since we both grew up and played at Warrior Run, we wanted to help give back to the kids playing sports there today. We have folks who support our tournament from outside the Warrior Run School district, and although the majority of golfers that play are from that area, we have several who come in from all over to help us out. At the end of the day, regardless of where you are from, we are all supporting the cause of our youth.”

T
he area’s finest minor leaguers aged 7-10 have gathered at our magnificent cornfield off of State Route 973. Massive crowds travel some fifty miles just to Cogan Station each year to witness many outstanding plays and spectacular performances. A few fans pitch a tent, and folks spend a great deal of time at our little complex. Several even came back for our world famous funnel cake fries after their teams were eliminated. Deep fried pickles anyone? LADIES & GENTLEMAN. ON BEHALF OF HEPBURN LYCOMING LITTLE LEAGUE. I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO COGAN STATION, PENNSYLVANIA AND THE FIRST GAME OF THE 2019 STEVE KREAMER MEMORIAL MINOR TOURNAMENT. Coach Steve Kreamer was a great dude who sure loved his baseball. The longtime stalwart of Hepburn Lycoming was a staple and then some.
He started our two-week minor league showcase back in the early 90s. And when he unexpectedly passed a few years back- it was a no brainer to honor Uncle Steve by renaming the tournament to the Steve Kreamer Memorial. Steve’s son in law, Marc Hess is the man in charge. He does a great job in organizing this minor league showcase. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes. Many folks are there to lend a hand to make sure every youngster has an enjoyable 17728 experience. I do my very best my to attend most of the games. I only skip a few nights for choir or to go fishing. I wanted to take a back seat this year and chose not to hang in the luxurious press box each night. I had my reasons. There were a few minor issues behind the mic last year, and I am actually quite sensitive. Special thanks to my man Curt Wolfhope for filling the void. He pronounces 90% of the names correctly and is proud

to be the official Public Address Announcer of the 2019 tournament. AND NOW LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. WE ASK THAT YOU PLEASE RISE. REMOVE YOUR Jamie CAPS AND TURN Spencer TO DEEP CENTER FOR THE SINGING OF THE NATIONAL ANTHEM. Yes. I have been known to sing a few verses from the press box. Curt and I both struggle, and we sometimes get accused of being strange. We do have access to several sound effects and old school music on our faulty laptop. Our intentions are good, and we have learned a lot over the years. It’s all about timing, and you have to know your audience. It isn’t a good idea to play the “NA NA NA HEY HEY HEY GOODBYE” after a called strike three. The same goes with a Homer Simpson DOH after a player gets hit in the head. Little League International might have caught wind of our antics and actually released a statement.
LADIES AND GENTLEMEN. HOW ABOUT ANOTHER ROUND OF APPLAUSE FOR THESE TWO TEAMS. WE CONGRATULATE THE COACHES AND ALL OF THE PLAYERS ON A JOB WELL DONE. SEE YOU TOMORROW. It takes several helping hands to pull off something like this, and thankfully, many other residents pitch in. This is a great fundraiser, and we don’t have to tell you how we’re going to spend it either. #impactfees. Special thanks to Coach Marc, Curt and all of my friends for picking up the slack. Because of them this year’s Steve Kreamer Memorial Minor A Tournament is another home run. I hope all of the parents and players enjoyed it. Cheers.
