Socialism is a Declaration of War Against the United States of America
F
or all you far-to-the-left, beyondliberal socialites, I’m even going to provide you a disclaimer with this week’s column, please do not read beyond this point. The information is impossible for you to understand, let alone accept, and your head might explode. For you far-to-the-left, mainstreammedia makers and reporters of what is supposed to be the news, please do not read this. I’m appalled by how you have twisted the very freedom you’re provided by the Constitution of the United States of America into complete venom. How the intent to provide honesty, integrity and ethical journalism intended to educate America has been replaced by complete hogwash that only divides our nation. Besides, it will do nothing for your ratings. If you are a younger American that has been completely brainwashed by the current system of higher education, aka the liberal, socialistic institutions posing as colleges and universities to prepare young people for life, please do not read beyond this point. There is no way this article can change what these brainwashers of young minds have done to you. You may as well go back to sleep. If you love our great Country and believe in the mission statement set forth by our forefathers, please read on. If you believe in compromise being the foundation of
democracy, please continue. If your feet are firmly planted on middle ground between the far right-wing nuts and the far left socialistic beyond nuts, you are where I believe the overwhelming majority of Americans stand. We cannot allow our One Republic under God that American soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice to create and protect, to be turned into a nation of socialism. Please remember socialism and communism walk hand-inhand. Can you imagine during the recent 75th remembrance, honoring and celebration of D-Day, informing our World War II Heroes our government is now going to be one of socialism? Thanks to all that have served to create and protect our freedom and democracy. You’ve done a great job! However, we are changing what our American forefathers fought the Revolutionary War to create. Those who are enlightened through an extreme liberal socialist think tank have a far better plan of government. We are changing the reason why everyone is immigrating to America to what they are running away from. Socialism is a cancer to freedom and prosperity. It has never worked in the history of our world and never will work. It is the ultimate the rich get richer while the poor get poorer scheme. Venezuela is a modernday example of its failure. The former Soviet
Union/USSR and their communistic/socialistic allies that fell during the Cold War are other prime examples. The elected individuals within our government that are preaching socialism should be charged with treason. You are elected and sworn in Jim to uphold the Constitution Webb, Jr. of the United States of America. Article IV of The Constitution guarantees every state in the Union to be a Republican form of government. Therefore it’s impossible to mesh socialism with democracy. Socialism is inherently in conflict with both our Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of our great Nation. So to Bernie Sanders and his prodigy, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez peddle your poppycock in Venezuela not the United States of America. I’m sure the Venezuelan populous will deal out the punishment you deserve. Now to the solution provided by the institutions of higher crapola and socialistic wannabes. Free, Free, Free. You are a victim of the United States of America. So you should be entitled to a free college education, free health insurance, and of course free to low-cost housing. Heck who needs a job anyway just let the federal government take care of you. Forget hard work, commitment, daily effort, and self-sufficiency. Forget about
democracy and a free capitalistic society where you can be anything you would like to be. Just ask former President Barack Obama about the opportunity. Forget about the American way of life where you are rewarded for effort, determination, and eat what you slay. These ideals go completely against the socialistic thinking that everybody should be financially equal, no matter how little they work. Our system of higher learning powered by the extreme liberal’s socialistic element has created way too many young Americans with no money, no ambition, and no idea what our Country is about. Frankly put, they are soft, lazy, and want the American taxpayer to pay for their lifestyle. This is true socialism at work that can be witnessed every day across our great land. There is almost two trillion dollars of college debt on the books. A crisis that has been created by that liberal think-tank that manages our colleges and universities. The daily attacks by the mainstream media powered by this liberal socialistic effort go way beyond removing President Trump from office. They go way beyond fake news. It is truly a planned attack on the United States of America and our way of life. It is completely about power, money, and control, not only of the American government but the American people. It is about changing our One Nation Under God to a godless nation of less than mediocrity. More government and more giveaways are never the answer. They are only a curse against freedom. God Bless America.

Summer Hair Repair
B
elieve it or not, it is, in fact, summer. Mother Nature hasn’t seemed to have gotten the memo, but it is summer. Heat, sun, humidity, salt water, and chlorine can all wreak havoc on your hair. So what can you do to protect your hair or undo some of the damage? Glad you asked. Here are some tips to surviving summer with your ends less than split! Replace lost moisture. Dry hair is the number one issue we face in summer. If your hair feels dry and even crunchy, use an intense hydrating mask like Moroccan Oil Masque, weekly. After shampooing, apply the mask. Step out of the shower and blast hair with a blow dryer set on medium heat to help the hair expand, allowing the product to penetrate the hair shaft. Once your hair is warm, let the mask set for another 10 minutes then rinse. Add life to your color. Salt, sun and chlorine are what cause certain hair colors (mostly blondes and redheads) to turn brassy. In order to restore your hair color to its former glory, head to the salon for a gloss or glaze treatment. They are less costly than getting full color and will restore the tone of your original hue while adding shine. Once your color is repaired, use color protecting shampoos

and conditioners Minimize frizz. If your hair seems frizzier now than during the spring, swap your regular styling products for Steph straightening cream Nordstrom — even if you don’t straighten your hair. They are designed to fill in the hair’s cuticle so that it looks smoother (as in frizz free). Look for moisture infusing ingredients. Air conditioning and sun exposure can suck the moisture out of hair. In order to hydrate it again use Panthenol and Vitamin E. Products containing these ingredients will add moisture, protect hair from heat styling and make hair more elastic so it’s less prone to breakage. Detangle with care. Hair that’s been abused by summer’s elements may be difficult to comb out. If you harshly comb out tangles, you may cause your hair to break. Use a wide-tooth comb and start at your ends and work up to your roots. To make detangling even easier, I can’t speak highly enough for ‘It’s a 10’ leave in conditioner. It detangles, adds moisture and shine, and protects hair from heat styling. It’s the “magic bullet for detangling hair without making it

flat. I use this every day regardless of season and as someone with curly hair that is often straightened it’s a miracle product! Trim split ends. Despite what commercials will lead you to believe, you can’t repair split ends. That’s like trying to unpeel a banana. Taking care to prevent split ends and getting regular trims is the only solution. Split ends can be caused by a whole host of issues, including heat styling, which we all are doing more and more (especially when battling summer humidity). Unfortunately, the only way to get rid of split ends is to trim them off or they’ll continue to split. Rinse with cool water. Rinsing with cool water seals the cuticle. Do this after every cleansing to help make the cuticle lay a bit flatter so hair looks shiny and healthy (not frizzy). Plus, it will be a welcome relief if summer ever catches up and we see more summer-like temperatures! Finally, here’s my last tip and it’s not really hair related. Wear sunscreen. Let me repeat this. Wear Sunscreen. Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and melanoma give zero you-know-whats if you are black or Italian or Irish or anything else. Everyone needs sunscreen to protect their skin (and scalps!) from sun related skin cancer. Plus, sunburns suck. Take it from someone who can burn just by looking at the sun funny. So use plenty of sunscreen, reapply regularly, and use 30SPF!

lize Johnson continues to amaze. I’m pretty sure you already know his incredible story. You see, last spring Alize became the very first from our area to get drafted in the NBA. The second round pick of the Indiana Pacers had a solid rookie campaign. He spent most of his season recording ridiculous numbers with the Fort Wayne Mad Antz in the D League. Alize got the call to the bigs, and I spotted him on the Pacer’s bench on ESPN and TNT multiple times. Impressive indeed, but it’s what Alize Johnson is doing off of the court that has me turning my head. This youngster has gone above and beyond by routinely giving back to our community. He’s the man. I was in the crowd a few weeks back to see his latest accomplishment. Alize, through his foundation, totally revamped the basketball courts on Little League Boulevard. Johnson always had dreams of being an NBA player, and he grew up playing at Memorial, Flanigan, and at the Bethune Douglas Center. So he decided to open up an outdoor facility. Johnson’s “Where There’s a Will, There’s
a Way” logo is painted at midcourt and features six NBA-style hoops, bleachers, and a scoreboard. It turned out amazing. Johnson and his management team totally spearheaded the entire project. “I’ve always wanted to build a park,” Johnson explained. “I grew up on these courts, and I only hope that I can inspire someone to make it. This is how I want to give back. To the community I love, and that has supported me.” Alize Johnson signed autographs, posed for countless photos, and got reacquainted with old and new friends. The kickoff also featured several basketball games with some of the area’s best. It served as a reunion of sorts for us old heads. There were many others from surrounding high schools that included some of Johnson’s Neumann teammates. I got to catch up with Kevin Anderson from the University of Delaware and a few other legends. Chevy Troutman and Grady Walker were both in the house. San Antonio Spur and Reading native Lonnie Walker said what’s up. I gave Alize a chest bump, and he somehow remembered my son’s name. That absolutely made my year. I smiled, and Jensen immediately called all of his friends. “I just got a picture with Alize

gaining confidence. Alize started all 31 of his games with the Fort Wayne Mad Antz. He averaged 19.1 points and an incredible team-leading 13.7 rebounds. Alize was a double-double machine and was called up to the show on a few occasions. He played in 14 games for the Indiana Pacers, and Johnson only averaged 4.5 minutes per contest. He scored a few points and got to hang in the NBA for an entire season. Alize learned the ropes and now knows what it takes to make it. Expect big things from him in 2019. Johnson has a nose for the ball and is relentless on the boards. He has flown under the radar and been an underdog his entire life. This is only the beginning. Alize Johnson is rather quiet and softspoken. He’s one of those guys who leads by example. I am so proud of him and what he’s already accomplished. Alize is only 23 years old, and that is downright scary. Obviously, he is very talented on the basketball court, but Alize is just as brilliant when he is off. That is saying A LOT. Congratulations on your recent venture. Continued success and thanks for making an impact. Whether it’s purchasing shoes for nearby squads or providing meals. Building parks for the next generation or taking pictures with my son Jensen. Salute pal. The entire community should be thankful. Cheers.

Johnson. He’s in the NBA, and he knows my dad.” “It’s a wonderful feeling,” Johnson added. “I always had plans to do something like this, but I wasn’t financially able. We are just getting started with our foundation, and we will continue to do what we can. It took a lot of work and a lot of people from the area who contributed. I’m just blessed to be in this position to make these sort of things happen.” Alize has already given back, and the young rookie has put up a ton of his own money. Just months after being taken in the 2nd round, he actually purchased team shoes for Neumann, Williamsport, and Loyalsock. Alize didn’t have to do that. But he did. Johnson and his mother Chanelle also distributed 100 Thanksgiving baskets throughout the community over the holidays. Now he built us a new outdoor basketball park. Great stuff, my friend. “I’m not surprised,” a proud Chanelle Johnson once said. “That’s who he is. Alize is now in a position to help. He hasn’t really done anything for himself. He is constantly thinking of others and what can he do for this community.” Alize Johnson definitely held is own in 2018, and he continues to work hard on his game. The 6’9” former Neumann standout has a nonstop motor and is

Gazette and Bulletin June 30, 1919 Muncy Welcomed its Soldier Boys Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

eneath a canopy of cloudless skies, fanned by gentle cooling breezes and environed with stately arches and a wilderness of waving flags and elaborate decorations, Muncy observed its Welcome Home Day on Saturday in a manner which must have sent a thrill of appreciation and pride through every soldier in whose honor it was celebrated. The day was observed in characteristic Muncy fashion and it was a happy coincidence that it fell on the day in which the treaty of peace was signed at Versaille. Of over 175 men in the service from the district in which Muncy is included and 140 from the borough alone. 125 were present and took part in the festivities and other activities of the day. Every soldier turned out in the parade and these with the various fraternal and war work organizations made up a
body which filled Main Street from one end of town to the other. The parade which was the big event of the day, moved promptly on time at 2 o’clock and marched and countermarched the length of Main Street which was gaily decorated with flags and bunting. No effort had been spared to make this culminating feature of the day and the “golden court” in front of the post office was a beautiful work of art. Four large pillars were placed in position forming a large square and the space above was connected at the top with golden loops of chenille. It was gathered at the center with a large golden star in honor of the only man Muncy mourns as lost in action and whom her people hope may still yet be alive, Lieutenant Roland Ritter. Each of the four pillars composing the court were covered with electric bulbs and in the panels of the base were individual oval shields containing pictures of Washington, Lincoln, Pershing and President Wilson.

ast week I learned the sad news that Captain C.A.”Pete” Tzomes, U.S. Navy Ret. had died at his home in Moline, Illinois, from his good friend Lucille Evans. I had gotten to know Pete after writing an article about him for Webb Weekly back in June of 2014. I had maintained a fairly close contact with him via phone and email since then. I found him to be a man of class, dignity and he had a boundless love for the country that he served with pride and distinction. Much of the information of this article of tribute to Pete comes from that 2014 article. Chancellor Alonso “Pete Tzomes did not like to be told that he can’t or is incapable of doing something. It only makes him more determined and tenacious to do what he was told he can’t do. It is the grit and highly developed sense of purpose that would help him overcome various hurdles that would make him the first African-American to command a nuclear submarine in the United States Navy.
Tzomes ( p r o nounced Toms) was born in Williamsport in 1944, a son of James Chancellor Tzomes and Charlotte Eudora Hill Tzomes. The Williamsport that Pete Tzomes grew up in was a very different place for African-Americans than it is now. There was an underlying subtle and not-so-subtle racism that Williamsport’s African-Americans had to endure when Pete was growing up here in the late 40s, 1950s and early 1960s. “My mom was fond of saying that the ‘north conceals what the south reveals,” Pete told me in 2014. “In the south you knew right where you stood. Jim Crow was there for all to see. In the north they

tried to make it more hidden.” He recalled that there were just two neighborhoods that Williamsport’s blacks were concentrated in. Realtors and property owners would not sell to blacks outside of those two neighborhoods. “I remember very well when P.D. Mitchell only wanted to move two blocks from where he lived on Park Avenue up to High Street. It caused a great uproar,” Tzomes said. “Mr. Mitchell got death threats and rocks and bricks thrown through his windows.” Accommodations were segregated in Williamsport at the time. No hotel would take blacks in. As a result Pete’s mother and a woman across the street, Mrs. Mellix opened up tourist homes at their house for blacks who came to town to stay. When the famous jazz singing group the “Ink Spots” came to town the Lycoming Hotel, now the Genetti, would not allow them to stay there, so they stayed at the two tourist homes. “The schools were not segregated and you interacted and played with white kids,” Pete said. “But many times when the parents of some of these children heard they were playing with you and hanging out with you they told their
children that they did not want their kids playing with you anymore because you were black.” He loved baseball and recalled serving as a ballboy for the 1959 Williamsport. He then recalled that the next year he was not asked to come back as ballboy. Roy Clunk, longtime business manager for the team, told him, “If I had known you were black, I would not have asked you to be a ballboy.’ Tzomes was a lightskinned black. Interestingly, my last conversation with Pete dealt with those 1959 Grays. I had emailed him a copy of an article I had written about the team for this year’s Williamsport Crosscutters program. He told me he enjoyed it a lot and it brought back a lot of good memories. Early on Pete developed an interest in attending the U.S. Naval Academy. Pete’s desire to attend the U.S. Naval Academy was prompted by an appearance by an Annapolis Midshipman, while he was attending what was then Stevens Junior High School. “The Midshipmen brought this film about Annapolis to show called ‘Ring of Valor’ and I determined that I wanted to go to the Naval Academy and earn one

of those rings,” Pete stated “Also, at the same time, there was a popular show on television, called ‘Men of Annapolis’, that I watched religiously and that further fired my interest in going to Annapolis.” It was at this point that a guidance counselor at Stevens tried to throw an obstacle in Pete’s quest. “I went to see this counselor about getting information about how to prepare and apply to go to the Naval Academy,” Pete remembered. “That counselor told me, ‘you shouldn’t try to go there they don’t have Negroes at the Naval Academy. That counselor was unaware that the first black graduated from there in 1947. Him telling me that I couldn’t go there just made me mad and more determined than ever to go there.” Pete started the application process when he was a junior in high school. He landed one of the alternate appointments but there were three other candidates ahead of him. Following graduation from Williamsport High School, he bided his time by attending the State University of New York at Oneonta. He made the Dean’s List and by doing so, showed even more strongly that he had the academic ability to excel at Annap-
olis. Also a couple of the other candidates ahead of him fell by the wayside and Tzomes was appointed to the Naval Academy in the spring of 1963, to begin his Plebe or freshman year in the fall. He did well at Annapolis and graduated from there in 1967. He applied for the Marine Corp fighter pilot program but could not meet the height requirements so he applied for and was accepted in the Navy’s Nuclear Power Program, which led to assignment to work on nuclear submarines. He served on several nuclear subs, including the U.S.S. Cavalla, where he served as executive officer under fellow Williamsporter, Captain Bill Rohm. “Pete was great to work with on the Cavalla. Neither of us knew we were from Williamsport until we started talking,” Rohm said. “He taught me a lot of things that I did not know about Williamsport. He told me the problems that blacks had in Williamsport. I had a pretty sheltered life and had no idea these things were going on. It blew my mind. I grew up only a few blocks from where Pete lived. Pete and I both liked good cigars a lot and I can remember our wardroom always being filled with blue haze of cigar

smoke…” Pete’s leadership abilities and his outstanding record on his previous assignments led the Navy to name him commanding officer of the nuclear submarine, the U.S.S. Houston in 1983, thus making him the first African-American to command a nuclear submarine in the United States Navy. “I had a great crew on the Houston and it was a privilege to serve as their commanding officer,” Pete said. His milestone yielded much attention, including a flattering feature story on him in the December 1985 issue of “Ebony” magazine. After ending his term of service on the Houston in 1986 he served in several high level assignments including Force Operations Officer on the staff of Commander Submarine Forces U.S. Pacific Fleet in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and oversaw the operations of all submarines in the Pacific theater. In 1988, Tzomes was appointed as the Director of the Equal Opportunity Division in the Bureau of Naval Personnel and as the advisor to the Chief of Naval Personnel on equal opportunity issues; and, in 1990, he became Commanding Officer of Recruit Training Command Great Lakes (boot
camp). Pete then served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations and Inspector General before he retired from the Navy in 1994. After retiring from the Navy he was employed as the utility manager of the Exelon Corporation, before retiring from there in 2012. It has been said that success can be the best revenge, but Pete Tzomes never sought revenge for some of the various indignities he had to endure, all he wanted was respect and he certainly earned that through his great abilities, his determination and his leadership skills. May you have eternal peace in your rest Pete. It might be appropriate to close with some words from the Burial at Sea. “Unto Almighty God we commend the soul of our brother departed (Pete), and we commit his body to the deep; in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection unto eternal life, through our Lord Jesus Christ; at whose coming in glorious majesty to judge the world, the sea shall give up her dead; and the corruptible bodies of those who sleep in him shall be changed, and made like unto his glorious body; according to the mighty working whereby he is able to subdue all things unto himself.”

an incredible son and has a heart of gold!! Chris then finally got to meet my parents on our first official date that didn’t consist of school. He was a bit scared of meeting my dad. The biker guy who looked tough, but was soft on the inside. He brought his dirt bike over to my house and we got to ride our bikes together. It was the perfect first date! I got to show off my dirt bike riding skills, and there is nothing like watching a man on a motorcycle. Later that night he was hungry, so my momma invited him in for our Sunday tradition of nachos and cheese, ice cream, and America’s Funniest Home Videos. We never ate in front of the tv, dinner was family time around the table, but Sunday nights were a different kind of special. This was something we did since I was little, and now we do the same tradition on Sunday night with our kids! Those nachos and cheese completely sealed the deal he said. Of course, I’ll include the one of a kind recipe for you! I could write column after column of stories about him and I, but the story of how we met is my favorite. I’m sure you will hear more in the months to come, but this man is my best friend. I don’t know what I’d ever do without him. He loves my cooking, and has so many favorites, but here the nachos sealed the deal and this chicken casserole he raves over. Picture don’t even do it justice. You will have to try it to believe me! And oh, remember,

This Week’s LION: American Rescue Workers Fresh Start Program By Larry Stout
T
here is an old, old saying that is better to give a hand up than a hand out. It is a simple saying, but it is a challenge to implement. A good example is the work of the American Rescue Workers (ARW) and their support to men and women who have just been released from prison. In
the past, it was well known that the ARW provided a 30-day emergency shelter for the homeless. Unfortunately, many of those who stayed at the shelter found that after the 30 days, they were back exactly where they started from. Cleveland Way, Shelter Director for ARW, knew that there had to be a better way to serve these individuals seeking to make a break from their past and get a
fresh start in their life. On April 1st of this year, Cleveland launched just such a program called Fresh Start. Instead of a 30day respite, this is a nine to twelve month curriculum with transitional phases, designed to move individuals and families out of poverty into self-sufficiency. Imagine a guy named Larry (just to grab a name out of the air) who has served a couple of years in state prison for drug related offenses, and now has been released but has no where to go. Larry meets with Director Cleveland Way or Housing Coordinator/Case Worker LeTricia Scutching who would discuss with him what resources he needs to become
independent (job, housing, etc.). They will identify needs and barriers, focusing on what Larry needs to become stable medically, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. If Larry agrees to participate in the program, he gets a bed at the Day to Day Emergency Shelter. For the first 30 days, he will be restricted to a one block radius unless he has appointments. If Larry has no income, he will be given $5 for the week, $10 for the next week, $15 for the third and finally a maximum of $20, which will continue each week as long as he is in the program without any outside

income. This is not a 30-day program, but a day to day program. As long as Larry works on the steps that lead to the goals, he “earns” another day. If he stalls, he is given a 48-hour exit date. Larry is being guided forward for 90 days toward the practices and skills. that are needed for employment, but also for life itself. Beyond the obvious skill training, it also includes learning how to ask for help, how to respond in a positive manner, curbing cursing, treating women equally and not as objects — all are part of the holistic approach of Fresh Start. Working at the American Rescue Workers is an integral part of the program that helps get Larry and those like him get into a habit of working. There are nine area employers that have partnered to accept applications from those who have gone through this screening process. If Larry should get a job, he agrees to give back a percentage of his funds that will be used for paying fines, court costs, child support, etc., but also used to save up for rent and housing deposit. Ideally, Larry will continue for at least four to five months, working and saving while continuing to stay at ARW.
When Larry reaches a goal of $1500, he is ready to graduate from the program. Six landlords have agreed to partner with ARW, and as a graduation present, Larry will receive an additional $500 and furniture for his apartment. Further, several banks have agreed to allow Larry to open a bank account. Those who are only looking for a bed and not willing to commit to the program are usually gone after the first few days, but for those who stick with it there is a 89% success rate. If they go completely through the program for nine months, they will have a job, an apartment, money in the bank, and a support group that can count on. Cleveland Way and his staff at American Rescue Workers have created a program that goes beyond just helping, to changing behaviors that can lead to personal success. For those in the community that would like to help with employment or housing opportunities, or have other resources that they believe can be of assistance, please contact Kendra Park, Community Engagement Coordinator for American Rescue Workers at kendra@arswilliamsport.org or call her at 570-323-8401, Ext 119. Fresh Start is doing the work, but they could also use a hand as well.

Recalling Frank Lucchesi: One of Williamsport’s Most Memorable Baseball Managers

-- --
t was with sadness, mixed with nostalgia that baseball fans both locally and across the country learned of the death of Frank Lucchesi, former Williamsport Grays manager, and big league manager for the Phillies, Cubs, and Rangers, last week at the age 92. Frank — and it is hard to think of calling him anything else — left an indelible imprint on the local professional baseball landscape when he managed the Williamsport Grays at Bowman Field in 1959, 1960 and 1962, compiling an enviable 240-178 record, and leading the Grays to the Eastern League playoffs all three seasons, piloting them to a co-championship in the Eastern League in 1960, and the best regular season record in 1962, before falling to Elmira in the playoffs. In 1999, Frank was voted the manager on the Williamsport Baseball All-Century in a poll conducted by the Sun-Gazette and the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Crosscutters brought him back to Williamsport at the beginning of their 2000 season to recognize him for this honor. It was during this visit that I got to meet Frank and spend a most enjoyable afternoon with him. It was over lunch at Franco’s that he re-
galed me with a wide variety of interesting and funny stories. I wish I had a tape recorder with me while he was telling these stories. They were very entertaining and befitted the fine gentleman and baseball “lifer” that he was. An example of the stories was the tale he told concerning an ejection while he piloted the Triple-A Arkansas Travelers in 1963. He said he exited the stadium and scaled a light tower to watch. Spied by the umpire, he was ordered down. “When I looked down, all of a sudden I realized I was afraid of heights and I’m scared to move,” he recalled. This event made national news; he told me it prompted his mother to call from California advising, “Don’t climb any more light towers.” During his tenure here he was a fan favorite. On August 31, 1959, he was honored in a pregame “Frank Lucchesi Night” ceremony only to be ejected from the game by the third inning after he felt the men in blue had wronged his team. I asked Frank about the legendary, mercurial, and prodigious homer hitting Dick Allen, whom he managed both here and with the Arkansas Travelers, and he smiled and said he was a “great and talented ballplayer, but at times could be difficult to manage.” He said that he would not “give in” to Al-

he managed again in the minors at Oklahoma City and Nashville. He returned to the Big Leagues with the Texas Rangers from 1975 to part way through the 1977 season. His last managerial post was an interim manager of the Chicago Cubs at the end of the 1987 season. He retired from baseball at the end of the 1989 season after managing the Nashville Sounds of the American Association, completing a baseball career of almost 40 years. He could truly be termed a baseball “lifer.” Men like Frank Lucchesi don’t come around very often, and Williamsport baseball fans were blessed with his presence and leadership abilities for three very successful seasons. Baseball truly could use more men like him.

len whenever he might become difficult but was glad to have had the opportunity to have managed him. After toiling as minor league manager in the Phillies farm system for 16 years, he was finally rewarded with the job as Phillies manager, although at this time in Phillies history that may not have been much of a reward. They were in a terrible time, though they did have several good players such as Steve Carlton, Rick Wise, Larry Bowa, Denny Doyle, Tony Taylor, and Deron Johnson. He was fired by the Phils partly through the 1972 season. He was a very popular figure in Philadelphia, and his firing was met with great sadness from Mayor Frank Rizzo on down to rank and file fans. His managerial career was not over though;

Faith Conversations…
Live By Faith: The River
W
hen I was a boy, summertime would often find me swimming in the Lehigh river with my friends. On more than one occasion, we tried to build a dam to stop the river’s flow. Crazy, right? But when you’re ten years old and bored, you just find stuff to do. We did have some success as we piled rocks against the shallow shoreline. It was pretty impressive to watch as our efforts redirected the flow of the mighty river. But our sense of accomplishment only went so far. As we placed rocks further out into the river, the strong current would sweep them away. Sometimes our efforts would change the flow
of the river — and sometimes our efforts would be washed away by something bigger than us. There is an important faith lesson in there, but first let’s take a closer look at how and when faith made a difference in the Scriptures. The gospels record several occasions when Jesus healed people because of their faith. In other words, they placed their faith-rocks in the river of life and the current was redirected: • The woman with a blood disorder in Mark 5:34. • The ten people suffering from leprosy in Luke 10:17.
There are also examples of Jesus healing people because of someone else’s faith. Again, their faith-rocks made the difference: • The four men with a paralyzed friend in Luke 5:17-26 • The centurion with a paralyzed servant in Matthew 8:5-13 And sometimes Jesus didn’t do miracles because Tim Hartzell of a lack of faith, like in His home town of Nazareth in Matthew 13:53-58. They should have put their faith-rocks into the river. They didn’t, and they missed out on some awesome miracles. Without a doubt, faith plays a role in miracles, but not always in the way we expect. There are
two powerful examples of faith that did not result in the miracle being sought: In the Garden of Gethsemane, Jesus pleaded with God to let Him out of the brutality of the crucifixion. He agonized in prayer, fully believing that God could do it. He threw His faithrocks into the river and they were washed away in the deep current of God’s redemptive will. God said no. See Matthew 26:36-46. Paul the Apostle pleaded with God to remove the thorn in his flesh. Paul also agonized in prayer, fully believing that God could do it. His faith-rocks were also swept away. God said no. See II Corinthians 12:1-10. What Jesus and Paul both experienced was the deep and unchangeable current of God’s redemptive will. Faith always results in a miracle. Sometimes it’s the miracle we want — and sometimes it’s the miracle we become.

Faith always results in a miracle. Sometimes we throw our faith-rocks into the shallows and it changes the course of events and the miracle we are seeking is granted. At other times, we throw our faith-rocks into the depths and the current of God’s redemptive will washes them away — revealing an even greater redemptive miracle through us. Regardless, our faith always results in a miracle. God loves to say yes to His children. In fact, He does so a hundred times a day. But every now and then God will say no to you. When He does, be assured that He is accomplishing something far more powerful and redemptive then anything you can imagine - and your unwavering faith in the midst of suffering will allow you to become the miracle. There is so much more to say — so let’s continue the conversation in next week’s article.

After God said no, Jesus got up and went to meet His betrayer. In doing so, Jesus expressed His unwavering faith through obedience and allowed God’s power to be put on full display. He became the miracle. Imagine what would have happened if God had said yes to Jesus’ prayer. I am eternally grateful that God said no — because a greater redemptive miracle was accomplished through the crucifixion and the resurrection. And to that, I say hallelujah! After God said no, Paul’s unwavering faith allowed God’s power to be displayed through his weakness — and he went on to write nearly one-third of the New Testament. He became the miracle. I can’t even imagine the loss to the Holy Scriptures had God said yes to Paul’s prayer. I am eternally grateful that God said no — because a greater redemptive miracle was accomplished. And to that, I say Hallelujah!

Senior Judge Dudley Anderson admitted this openly at a ribbon cutting ceremony held at the Lycoming County Court House on Monday, June 17th. He noted that many new judges detest being assigned Family Court, and would do almost anything to
avoid it. This is what makes Judge Joy Reynolds

on this mantle for the county with such dedication, that now she has become a recognized expert in the Commonwealth in these matters. But what takes place in Court Rooms #6 & #7 are just one facet of the court’s business. With the relocation, new office spaces have been updated and created to better assist and serve the public who have business with the court’s offices, but also provides an efficient layout and effective office space use which improves employee productivity. Thus, more work can get done in less time. And the ‘waiting room’ for children who are part of the court process is now a large playroom, fully packed with games and activities to help
them in what must be difficult circumstances. Despite rumors to the contrary, Lycoming County government is very cost conscious. Commissioner Chairman Jack McKernan noted in his comments at the dedication that it was the County’s Maintenance Department, and not an outside contracted firm, that made all the renovations and modifications for the new offices. In addition, the move of the Lycoming County Domestic Relations Section was supported through funding earned from state and federal resources. Both the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Federal Government monitor the performance of the Domestic Rela-
tions Section. Each month, the Lycoming County office ranks first among all fifth class counties in Pennsylvania based on its performance. This performance is directly tied to incentive payments received by Lycoming County, which in turn helped support the move. Through Judge McCoy’s hard work as well as the rest of the support staff and departments associated with Family Court, a very necessary but thankless court process has become one of the best in the Commonwealth. Family Court is still not a happy place to go to, as it represents broken homes and broken lives. But at least at the Lycoming County Courthouse, it is the best it can be.

McCoy so incredibly unique, as she actually has a passion for Family Court. And it was her passion, and the commitment of the county commissioners, as well as an enormous amount of planning and preparation by many others that has led to the dedication of the fourth floor of the County Court House now serving as the home for all the offices of the Family Court Division. The reason why most judges dislike serving on Family Court is because it also could be nicknamed Messy Court. It must hear cases involving divorce, child custody, child support, domestic abuse, etc. In his opening remarks, Judge Anderson noted how Judge McCoy has taken

whopping 8 slots for one-pieces. First, you’ll need 2-3 work/church appropriate options. These garments should be flattering, yet functional, preferably cotton, and provide enough coverage for the job and your place of worship. For evenings and weekends, a black knitwear maxi or midi dress that’s easy to throw on, comfortable, breathable, and dark enough to hide any perspiration. Again, depending on your summertime schedule, you may need up to 2 party/ wedding attendee dresses. If you’re feeling adventurous, one of them can be a dressier jumpsuit. That leaves you with 2 additional spaces for one-pieces of your choice, whether is a patriotic sundress for the 4th, a jersey romper for an outdoor concert, or a seersucker A-line to pull double duty at a wedding and for work. Accessories, like jewelry, bags, and sunglasses are unlimited. However, try to avoid shopping for additional addons, as part of this experiment is to save money. You may find you have to do laundry more often, but instead of drying clothes in the dryer, hang them in the sun to protect their fabric integrity. For more delicate pieces, hand wash and spot clean. And be sure to pick pieces you both love and will wear on a weekly basis. If you have only functional options, and nothing that makes you feel fabulous, you’ll start seeking pieces outside of your collection. Also, vacation clothes have a free pass. Once you have your 35 or so pieces freshly laundered and ready to wear, go out and enjoy the summer.

non-gym sneakers, and either another pair of flats or heels, whichever is more appropriate for work. Seven to nine bottoms: A pair of cropped jeans and denim shorts both in dark washes, a pair of utility or khaki shorts, a lightweight circle skirt, a work-appropriate skirt, a breezy jogger type pant, a cropped trouser, and then two statement pieces, like anchor-print shorts, or a white denim skirt. Now let’s talk about tops, which will compromise the bulk of your capsule collection, with 12-14 pieces. Start with 3-4 neutral tees in white, gray, and black. As a huge fan of stripes, I’d recommend two striped tees, but if you’re more of a polka dot, or brights enthusiast, go with two of your favorite type of shirt. You’ll also need 2-3 tanks and camisoles. Depending on how many dressy vs. casual affairs you have on your calendar, go with 2 fairly durable tanks and 1 “cocktail” cami. For those chillier summer nights, have a hoodie or sweatshirt on hand, and you may want to include a 1-2 summer-weight sweater or cardigans to layer for indoor AC. Round out your tops with 2-3 button-ups, either short-sleeved or sleeveless. Lastly, have at least one, if not two, pieces of outerwear, like a jean jacket, lightweight rain jacket, a linen blazer/duster, or casual cotton blazer/bomber. From separates to one-pieces, the summer is a great time for dresses, rompers, and jumpsuits. For this 35-piece summer capsule wardrobe, you have a

The Roving Sportsman… Many Fall Hunting Opportunities in Pennsylvania By Jon Pries to the fawns that regenerate the population.

H
unting and Trapping Licenses for the upcoming seasons in Pennsylvania are now available for purchase. It would be advisable to get yours as soon as possible since there are numerous changes and additions to learn about. This year each license purchaser will receive a free copy of the Pennsylvania Hunting and Trapping Digest for the 2019-2020 seasons. Last year, they were only available for purchase, not as a free hand out with your license. There are numerous changes, and they are spelled out in the Digest. There really is a lot to read about and understand regarding new opportunities. Let’s take a look at a few so you will get an idea of what is in store for this fall. Antlerless Deer Licenses: Since this is usually of interest to area sportsmen, you should know that for the upcoming season the allocation is being reduced in WMU 2G by 4,000 licenses, making 26,000 available for the year. With fewer available for purchase, it will be even more important to make sure you submit your application on time – that means Monday, July 8 this year for residents and Monday, July 15 for nonresidents. There is often discussion by hunters at deer camp about whether or not to take antlerless deer. Yes, obviously, they give birth
But, scientifically speaking, it is important to have a properly balanced herd, with an appropriate ratio of bucks to does. Most observations in the surrounding counties would identify a larger number of does to bucks, thus it would appear that taking does would be advisable. In the end, the decision is yours to make. Firearms Deer Season: In a rather bold move, this year the firearms deer season will open on a Saturday rather than the traditional opener on Monday. There was much discussion leading up to this decision, and there has been much discussion – rather heated at times - since. With the opening day this year to be on a Saturday, it expands the season to 13 days, including 3 Saturdays. The desire was to give hunters an additional Saturday in hopes that more hunters would be able to be afield on a Saturday. Depending on feedback from the upcoming season, there is some discussion of returning to the traditional Monday opener. Time will tell. Bear Seasons: Over that past few years, the harvest numbers of black bear throughout the state have not kept up with their growing population. Inclement weather often occurs, thus reducing the numbers of hunters afield and the total number of animals taken. In order to better control the number of bruins throughout Pennsylvania, there has been the

elk licenses will be awarded via lottery and anyone wishing to be considered for any of the three seasons must file a separate application for each. Fifteen licenses (5 bulls, 10 cows), are available for the September archery elk season, 98 licenses (27 bulls, 71 cows) are available for the general season, and 29 cow licenses are available for the January antlerless elk season. In all, 142 elk licenses, 32 for bulls and 90 for cows will be awarded through the lottery system. All of these changes and additions should give sportsmen throughout the state a greater chance to take a deer, bear or elk this fall. Certainly more days afield will be the immediate benefit of these changes. I sure hope your schedules will allow you to take advantage of these additional opportunities this coming fall!

“spruce up” a jig and make it even more enticing is to add a minnow or night crawler. There are some special rigs made just for walleye fishing and they are definitely worth having on hand. The weight-forward spinner rig and some special spinner rigs made for the purpose of attaching night crawlers are great for getting the offering down to the walleyes hang out. Walleyes are surprisingly soft biters so don’t necessarily expect arm jolting strikes. By the way, besides being fun and challenging to catch walleyes are probably one of the best tasting fish you could ever put on your plate.

retrieved can be very productive at times and so can vibrating or lipless lures which also run deeper. Even minnow type lures like Rapalas and Rebels either in a weighted version or with some type of weight added ahead of the lure can take walleyes. The key is to get down to the fish since walleyes are generally not found on or near the surface but rather on the bottom or suspended. Spoons and spinners will also take walleyes and can easily be fished in deeper water. Also the good old reliable lead head jig with a soft plastic grub or worm added and we certainly wouldn’t want to leave out a deer hair lead head jig. A good way to

SW Lions Club Football Game Kicks Off Friday
W
orld War II French Military Leader Jean de Lattre de Tassiguy was once quoted saying, “An optimist is a man who plants two acorns and buys a hammock.” I often pass by South Williamsport Lions Club member Max Dell’s house and have not yet spotted either oak trees or a hammock in his yard. Nevertheless, the small idea Dell presented to the South Williamsport Lions Club years ago has grown into a successful annual event that will be celebrated for the 29th time when the annual South Williamsport Lions Club District Four football game kicks off at Rodney K. Morgans Stadium this Friday night. The game pits graduated high school football players from throughout District Four divided into North and South squads. The North team, comprised of teams from our local area, is coached by North Penn-Mansfield’s Tom Dickerson. Central Columbia’s Scott Dennis leads the South team. “The process for player selection for each year’s Lions Club game begins in January at a meeting of the Coach’s Association,” explained Lions Club member Bob Coolidge. “Once a determination of which players will be invited, the Lions Club sends out a letter which describes what each player is asked to do. By the end of March, the early rosters are formulated. “This year, when the first rosters came out, we had 94 players pretty well equally
divided by the two teams. From that point, I am pretty much immersed in collecting the information from the players so that it can be assembled for our game program. Other Lions Club members, including Max Dell, the game coordinator, work with the coaches and perform the necessary behindthe-scenes details that make this game possible.” Participating players are asked to support the game by obtaining an ad in the game program. Each player receives their game jersey, is hosted at a banquet to be held this Thursday, and is eligible for several scholarship awards provided by the Lions Club. At press time the North squad had 38 players while the South had 41 commitments. Lycoming County athletes scheduled to play for the North team include: Tyler Shadle, Hunter Budman, Brayden Strouse, Rhyle Strausbaugh, Jacob Gearhart and Daniel Beckley (Montgomery); Dylan Wilt, Coleman Good and, Mike Kustanbauter (Muncy); Cameron Griffin, Koby Peacock, Kyle Tomb, Anthony Darby, David Tomb and Hunter O’Connor (Jersey Shore); Eli Holler, Matthew Hill, and Ian Wimer (Loyalsock); Connor Morse and Paden Fry (Montoursville); Samuel Hillman, Josh Bernocco, Blaze McClements and Tucker Kreisher (Williamsport). Hughesville’s Jase Wright will be playing for the South squad. “This game is an opportunity for us to give back to the community and allow our
seniors to have one more high school football game and collectively enjoy the evening,” Dickerson stated. “As coaches, we decided a couple of years ago to split the coaching duties between schools in the northern tier and schools in the Williamsport area. This year I’m serving as the head Scott coach, and next year Paul Lowery Bozella (Montgomery) will be the head coach. “Even with dividing District Four into two teams for this game, our schools are so spread out. We are a little bit geographically disadvantaged, so we split the practice sessions. We’ve had two practices at Wellsboro and two at Loyalsock and Thursday we’ll have a fifth practice at South Williamsport before the teams are hosted at the Lions Club dinner. “There are some kids that we could have had on the North team that are not playing. This is one last chance for the kids to play, and I don’t understand why some make the decision not to play. Just a few weeks ago, I was attending a graduation party and one of my former players, Joe Whitaker, told me how much he loved playing in this game. I don’t know if some schools these young men will be attending in the fall don’t want their players to play or what the reasons may be. If it is a fear of injury, then perhaps they shouldn’t be playing this fall. “This game is a great opportunity for kids to show what they can do and get after it one last time. Every year I go to the game whether we have kids playing in it or not and I’ve seen the enjoyment players have had and it does
irk me a bit that some of the Northern kids are not playing. But as coaches, we’ve tried to make this a great experience for the players we have. “Defensively both teams must play a 4-3 set with man-to-man in the secondary. We’ll run a spread offense with one man in the backfield most of the time. We have some talented athletes at the skill positions, and we’ll try to get them the ball as much as possible.” In the past attendance has usually been around 700. Proceeds from the game help build ramps for homebound people, provide awards of scholarship money to players each year in addition to $13,000 awarded for high school academic scholarships, Christmas baskets that are distributed each year, sponsorship of Little League teams, and support of services for the visually impaired. “This is a great event that we encourage the public to come out and show support,” Coolidge added. “They’ve seen the players play on their individual high school teams and now those once competing players are playing together, some of them playing football for the very last time. The results to our Lions Club have been very rewarding over the years. We are very much a serviceoriented club, and this annual game is a big part of what we do. “We are excited and look forward to a wonderful evening. We have a beautiful new program this year. The National Guard is bringing a gigantic flag which will be displayed during the National Anthem, which will involve the players and cheerleaders.” The gates to Rodney K. Morgans Stadium will open at 5:00 p.m. this Friday, June 28. Kickoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Tickets are available at the gate, adults $6.00 and students $4.00.
