T

hank you to all that made our Webb Weekly Great American Cookout Giveaway the summer fun contest for a great cause it was intended to be. I couldn’t believe the number of folks that actually brought their entry forms into our Webb Weekly office. It was great to meet and greet some of our readers. I also appreciated the handwritten notes with the entry forms, phone calls, and texts about the contest. We are all so blessed to have each other as neighbors and call this special neck of Penns Woods home. Phyllis Maietta of Loyalsock was the winner of the summer prize pack. I guarantee you the sweet smell of the smoke billowing from the new grill made everyone’s mouth water in her neighborhood. Tip of my Webb Weekly Philadelphia Phillies Fourth of July cap to my partners in the giveaway with a cause. First up owner Gary Cupp and son Jeff, owners of Lycoming Lawn and Garden. What an amazing grill. Most of all, thank you for putting it together; I sure as heck didn’t want to be stuck with that task — special shoutout to Gary’s son-in-law Josh for delivering the grill. Thank you to the providers of the amazing grillables and sides for the perfect backyard BBQ. Carl DiParlo and his gang at Tony’s Deli and Mikey Rupert and his family at Rupert’s

Specialty Meats. They are truly protectors of the old-time butcher shop and market. You can’t go wrong with anything you purchase from their stores. I’m just glad they take all the calories out for me. Last but not least, tip of an ice cold Bud Light to Chet Ruth and son-in-law John Swart, the providers of refreshment courtesy of Frosty Beverage. Chet and his family have been providing food and beverage to the West Branch Valley for decades. He is one of the most customer-friendly folks I’ve ever met. There’s just something special about the family-owned businesses within our communities. Obviously, they provide great products and service, but it goes way beyond that. It’s their love of living the American dream, their friendly smiles, the knowing they really care about their neighbors, community, and Country. Most family owned and operated businesses are passed down from one hardworking generation to the next. It is my honor to promote all the businesses that can be found within the pages of the Webb Weekly. I can tell you first-hand owning and managing any business in the world of today requires more commitment than ever. Please make sure you buy local. Begin at the closest storefronts to your home and work your way out. This is truly small town Americana at its finest. Please remember these are the folks that support everything

from Little League, to a friend in need, to sometimes whole communities when something unforeseen happens. Say hello and shake hands with the person you’re purchasing from. Do not just click on order complete or drive to New York to purchase a vehicle. Neither one does anything to give back to the wonderful place you call home. Now, getting back to the most important part from our Great American Cookout giveaway. By simply taking the time to enter the contest, you have helped some of the most important people within every community. Those that have served to protect the very freedoms we are blessed with. I am told that 1,446 individuals entered the contest. Thank you to all for playing. And a tip of my Webb Weekly cap to my classified lady Jaimie Hoover for overseeing the Great American Cookout Contest. We will be donating a George Washington for every entrant to the local VFW Veterans Benefits Office. Which, by my math comes out to $1,500. I’m a big believer that rounding up helps keep the glass half-full. As you lend a helping hand through charitable donation, please remember our Veterans. There are several outstanding organizations that especially look after our local vets. Those that have served are very proud and often would never think of asking for help. However, a lot of times they will approach a Veterans organizations or those working at these facilities will know of a veteran that needs our support. I’ve had several folks, including some contest entrants, ask me for the information to make a donation to the local VFW

Please always be mindful when donating to any organization. If you don’t recognize the name of the nonprofit or they are requesting personal information that does not seem necessary, the red flag should go up. If you ever have any questions about a business or organization’s legitimacy, you’re more than welcome to reach out to me. I will assist you in any way I can. We all need to support and help our fellow man. In the same breath, no one wants to be scammed or taken advantage of. This is another obvious reason to do business and donate locally with people you know. They have to look their family, and fellow neighbors square in the eye. God Bless America.

Summertime

I

t’s all but mid-July and the lazyhazy-crazy days of summer are upon us. It seemed like Mother Nature took her sweet time getting around to summer weather, but it appears to be here finally. So how are you spending your summer? Since I don’t have a pool or really know anyone who does, I’m looking at other ways to spend my summer days and evenings. I know you are probably tired of hearing me say it, but there is always something to do around the area, and there are more and more options all the time. The more recent, and intriguing, addition is the Hatchet House downtown. This is a cool new place where you can go to throw axes at targets! Seems like a fantastic way to get out the heat, relieve some stress, spend time with friends, and maybe even get a little exercise. You can check them out on Facebook, and you are able to book reservations online. Other great ways to beat the heat in the area include bingos, paint parties,

quizzos and more. There are plenty of opportunities around to grab a drink and a friend and have a little Steph indoor fun. Nordstrom If you like being outside, but not in a let’s-go-for-ahike kind of way, then downtown Williamsport is once again the place to be. There are plenty of bands playing outside in Pine Square a couple of days a week to keep you entertained. If you do like being outside in a let’sgo-for-a-hike kind of way, there is lots of that to do too. Jacoby Falls, Ricketts Glen, Rider Park and more. There is also plenty of fishing to be found in the river, creeks, ponds, and lakes nearby. Let’s not forget that the longer the kiddos are out of school, the more they want to be entertained. Reptiland, the Little League Museum, Kaos Fun Zone, Treasure Castle Playland and the Taber Museum are all great ways to get out of the heat and keep the kids entertained. Of course, the Lycoming County Fair

opens this week and Lou has all the details on page 6! Also, consider taking a ride on the Hiawatha! It’s a great way to get out of the house, and it’s always a little cooler on the river. And if the weather doesn’t cooperate and you just want to hang out inside, there is nothing better than staying with the classics: checkers, cards, and board games. Or ride out bad weather with a family movie. Now is a great time to re-visit the Toy Story franchise before checking out the newest movie. If you want a little culture, be sure to check out the Community Theater League or the Community Arts Center. The CTL is doing a production of “West Side Story” that opens next week and in August will be featuring “Mary Poppins Jr.” and Willy Wonka Jr.” At the CAC, look for the upcoming Summer Stock production of “Newsies.” This is an all-student production featuring kids from all over the area. Webb Weekly is a proud sponsor of this show, and we will have more coming up in the near future for sure! As you can see, there is plenty to do to fill your long summer days this year! Be sure to get out and enjoy all the area has to offer!

paniment of drums and guitar. Comprised of composer and violinist Ion Zanca, violinists Eleanor Dunbar and Melissa Priller, bassist Young Heo, guitarist Anthony Plant and percussionist/drummer Efren Guzman, DSQ takes you on a journey to the nexus of classical music and modern pop where artists like Beethoven and Bono collide. “This is not your Grandmother’s String Quartet” -Wall Street Journal Béla Fleck & The Flecktones March 24th at 7:30 p.m. Groundbreaking, Grammy-winning quartet Béla Fleck & The Flecktones will be celebrating its 30th anniversary with a North American tour. Banjoist Béla Fleck, harmonica and keyboardist Howard Levy, bassist Victor Wooten and percussionist/drumitarist Roy “Future Man” Wooten have been creating some of the most forward thinking music during their long, storied career. While all manners of genres come into play — from classical and jazz to bluegrass and African music to electric blues and Eastern European folk dances — the result is an impossible to pigeonhole sound all their own, a meeting of musical minds that remains, as ever, utterly indescribable. Simply put, it is The Flecktones: music made only when these four individuals come together. Steep Canyon Rangers April 30th at 7:30 p.m. With OUT IN THE OPEN, Steep Canyon Rangers affirm their place as one of the

most versatile and idiosyncratic bands in all of contemporary American music. The GRAMMY® Award-winning North Carolina-based sextet has spent nearly two decades bending and shaping the bluegrass aesthetic, wedding it to elements of pop, country, folk rock, and more to create something original and all their own. The band has worked with many artist and recently toured and released an album with Steve Martin. OUT IN THE OPEN is perhaps Steep Canyon Rangers’ bravest excursion thus far, transcending bluegrass while in many ways getting closest to the genre’s true form thanks to producer Joe Henry’s very traditional approach towards recording. GENTRI May 8th at 7:30 p.m. GENTRI: The Gentlemen Trio was established in June 2014 and is comprised of three highly trained tenors: Brad Robins, Casey Elliott and Bradley Quinn Lever. Pioneering a signature sound that can only be described as “Cinematic Pop,” the music of GENTRI is transfused with lush, epic orchestrations and rich, dynamic three-part harmonies all composed by the group’s producer Stephen Nelson. Critics have called GENTRI’s sound “strong, brave, and inspiring” as well as “anything but boring.” Theatre and Ticket Information Public on-sale July 15th. he study of history is not as appreciated as it once was, but there are some important lessons to be learned from the past. One of these is from the process of economic development in the rural areas of the United States that took place in the early to middle part of the 20th century. What kept these country homes and villages from developing was the lack of energy and convenient

means of transportation. Pennsylvania was aggressive in providing paved roads to the outlying areas, and the interstate network that began under President Eisenhower linked the country together in a way it never was before. Suddenly, isolated areas got connected with the rest of the world. But as critical as transportation was for a country that sprawled from sea to shining sea, energy was also needed, especially electricity. Amazingly, electricity was in general usage in urban ar-

County Hall Corner: Broadening the Broadband

eas for decades and decades before it was commonplace in the rural areas. Until homes, farms, and small businesses in the country got electricity, these rural areas were literally locked in the dark ages. Lycoming County is in a somewhat similar situation today, but not in matters of energy or transportation, but information. Access to the internet, GPS, cellphone service, etc., which is generally described with the shorthand term, “broadband,” is widely available in the greater Williamsport area. However, heading off very far to the north, south, east, or west from that bubble, there is a noticeable drop-off in accessibility. Just as the lack of transportation and electricity limited the progress of rural areas of America in the past, there is a similar issue with access to broadband today in the “dead zone” areas. It’s for this reason that Lycoming County is holding a public meeting on this issue on Wednesday, July 10th at 2:00 p.m. at the First Floor Commissioners Room in the Lycoming County Executive Plaza, 330 Pine Street, in Williamsport. Everyone who believes that their internet service is inadequate should seriously consider attending this meeting. The program is hosted by SEDA-Council of Governments, which has contracted with Design Nine of Blacksburg, Virginia to provide a broadband study for Lycoming, Clinton, Northumberland, and Union counties. Design Nine has developed networks in New Hampshire,

Minnesota, Virginia, Texas, and even in Quebec. Their work in this initial phase is to survey businesses and residents regarding their current broadband connections. Surveys will be made available to the public at select locations throughout the four counties, as well as online via social media and the web. These surveys will provide detailed broadband usage and coverage data needed to complete the study. Broadband access was a major topic that was brought up during the recent election for County Commissioner, especially in rural areas. Help may be on the way! For business owners who cannot attend the public meeting on the 10th, paper surveys may be found at the http://projects.designnine.com/survey/seda-cog-business-broadband. For more information on this project in general, contact Austin Daily, Community and Economic Development Planner at 570-320-4671 or Tonya Anderson, Administrative Manager at 570-320-2123.

trips can be made each day, said Mr. Laird. No further action concerning the investigation being carried out along Lycoming Creek has been reported. Marlin E. Wilt, district engineer for the state Department of Health had announced that the water in the creek was contaminated by the dumping of sewage into the stream from residences or cabins in the area. Other state and county health officials are taking a survey to remedy the situation. The beach will not be opened again until state approval is given. It may be a month or more before the water can be purified to the extent that it is fit for swimming, said Mr. Wilt. While the investigation continues state health officials emphasized the importance of all outdoor and indoor pools alike to be state approved. This was necessary under state legislation that regulated public bathing places.

Further embrace the beachy vibe of this ensemble mashup with waterproof athletic sandals and don’t forget some aviator sunglasses. Lastly, for those nights around the fire-pit, or on the river, go with a laid-back chic outfit of chambray drawstring shorts, and a summer-weight long-sleeve sweater. Whether you go for a

pullover or cardigan, a longerlength open-weave knit is great for layering over your standard tanks, tees, or camisoles for when temps dip after sunset. Chambray in a pull-on silhouette is just as easy to wear as a gym short, but feels more put together and comes with pockets. Additionally, both a loose cardi and drawstring shorts can do double duty as bathing suit cover-ups (either together, or each on their own). A

simple slip-on sneaker completes this casual, yet stylish summer nighttime look. There are countless ways and occasions to style denim shorts beyond sporting your old cutoffs to mow the grass. They key to pulling off jean shorts in your 30s and 40s is to style them in ways that aren’t so run-of-the-mill and to keep things tidy. Leave the raw edges and sloppy tops to the younger ladies.

Lycoming Motors By John Shireman

T

hose of us living in the Williamsport area are well aware of the manufacturer Textron, and before that Avco, on Oliver Street in the city. Avco was a major employer in Lycoming County and employed over 1,000 people. But did you know that same company in 1927 employed over 2,500 people and was known as Lycoming Manufacturing Company and was owned by Auburn

Automobile Company? Its origins go back to 1910 as Lycoming Motors. Starting in 1910, Lycoming Motors began manufacturing internal combustion engines for automobiles. They contracted to build and assemble engines for Velie. Velie was a car company located in Moline, Illinois from 1909 to 1928. The engine they built for Velie was a fourcylinder L head with a 4.5-inch bore and a 5.5 bore. In 1915 the Dort Automobile Company of Flint, Michigan used a new engine

produced by Lycoming Motors, the Model L engine. This was a four-cylinder engine L head coming in two different variations: the first, a 166 cubic inch with a 5-inch bore and a 3.25-inch stroke. The second model was a 192 cubic inch with a 5-inch bore and a 3.5-inch stroke. Dort Automobile was in business from 1915 to 1924. As Lycoming Motors production expanded, the name changed to Lycoming Motor Corp., and in 1924 the name became Lycoming Manufacturing Company. That year two new engines came online. The first being a six-cylinder

engine, the Model 25. The second of the new engines was one of America’s first straight eight engines known as the Model H. Auburn first used this engine in their 1925 8-63 Model. Auburn saw the potential in Lycoming Manufacturing and purchased the company for $2 million. The payroll totaled $3 million and employed 2,500 people. This acquisition enabled Lycoming to have sales totaling $7 million. By 1929 Lycoming had manufactured 500,000 engines. They still had orders for engines to Gardner in St. Louis, Missouri and Elcar in Elkhart, Indiana but by 1931 Auburn was their

dual overhead camshafts, four valves per cylinder. The Model J engine has a 3.75-inch bore and a 4.75-inch stroke developing 265 horsepower. A modified J engine known as the SJ developed 320 horsepower at 4700 RPM came online in 1932. This was the most powerful automotive production engine built during the 1930s. Lycoming produced a total of 500 Duisenberg Model J & SJ engines. Unfortunately, in 1937, Auburn, Cord, and Duesenberg went out of business, thus ending Lycoming’s Manufacturing of engines for the automobile industry.

In the 1930s, even during the depression, Lycoming designed and manufactured a V-8 used in 1936 and 1937 front wheel drive Cord automobiles, Models 810 and 812. hat kid you knew in high school – the one so far out of your clique? You thought about him the other day, nothing important. A few of his friends were your friends but mostly, he was just some kid. Still, the memory

of him popped into your head and you wondered what ever happened to him. And in “Ohio” by Stephen Markley, that kid thinks about you, too. Bill Ashcroft had no plans to ever come back to New Canaan, Ohio. He didn’t have plans not to, either. Wherever the mood took him was okay – Thailand, New Orleans, as long as there was booze and drugs, he was good. He went wherever life was interesting and this trip would be that: a girl he slept with in high school asked him to bring a tightly-wrapped brick

of undefined something back to their hometown. He was once in love with her, and he could easily fall back there while he was in New Canaan. The visit would also allow him to see old buddies, and to find out if anybody’d heard from Lisa. Stacey Moore didn’t want to meet with Lisa’s mother. It had been a decade since Beverly had found Stacey and Lisa together in bed, which was just before graduation, when Lisa disappeared. Few had heard from her since then, except for occasional emails and postcards from Vietnam or

Bangkok or somewhere overseas. She said she wasn’t coming back. Stacey had put the pieces of her heart together since then (though she still loved Lisa) but Lisa’s mother still mourned Lisa’s loss and nursed her regrets. Dan Eaton was also home in New Canaan, because he wanted closure. After multiple tours of duty in Iraq and a Purple Heart, life had changed but he needed to know that the girl he’d spent his school years crushing on was, indeed, happy without him. Bill mentioned Lisa, but Dan hadn’t heard

hormones of teenagerhood, terrified that those really were the Best Days of Your Life. That’s a feeling of nostalgia, but maybe not a very comfortable one. It’s similar to experiencing the awkwardness you get when you visit your old high school today: it’s familiar but, more than anything, it reminds you sharply that high school was impossibly, cringingly hard. Yes, this book is a tad overwordy but it’ll drag you into the story faster than you can spell the title. From there, for sweeping novel lovers, “Ohio” just clicks.

He had a dinner date scheduled with Hailey, and Lisa might as well have been a million miles away… The first thing you’re going to notice when you pick up “Ohio” is its heft. It’s a big book, almost too big, and there are times when your mind may wander. And yet, its characters are magnificent, including two who never really show up. Author Stephen Markley gives them and others depth and brittleness as he writes with razor-precision about being an adult, looking back at the angst and

here is probably no other single word in the English language that will conjure up so much daydreaming and conversation among fellow hunters than the word “whitetails!” While there are certainly many avid turkey, bear, upland game and waterfowl hunters from coast to coast, the majority spend more time talking about whitetails than any other game they pursue. Whether you are at the local barber shop, sporting goods store, or standing on the church steps after an inspiring Sunday sermon – frequently the talk centers around deer and deer hunting, and whitetails in particular. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of pursuing whitetails in northern Pennsylvania, central and southern Texas and northern Illinois. And, no matter where I have been, when in deer camp or hunting with some buddies in a remote location, the talk centering on whitetails goes

on for hours, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning. The mysteries, the mystiques, the facts and the fiction surrounding this favorite animal seem endless. So, what are some of the things that hunters agree upon and what initiates back and forth discussions surrounding this popular big game animal? Back when antler restrictions were first put in place here in Pennsylvania, a lot of hunters condemned the Pennsylvania Game Commission for their decisions. At deer camp and among deer hunters, much heated discussion took place. At the time, hunters were shooting a high percentage of year and a half old bucks, and most of those on opening day and the first few days of the season. The bucks were simply not even close to reaching maturity. Oh, yes, there are those who say that antlers don’t matter, but in reality, if a large-racked mature buck was standing next to a scruffy, small-racked buck, there is a better chance most hunters would take the larger animal. But they were

minerals, including their residues cannot be used within a 30-day period of a hunting season. This restriction does not apply to hunting near areas where accepted farming or habitat management practices are taking place. With this in mind, and if you don’t have any food plots that you are currently managing, remember that farmers don’t particularly like it when too many deer are eating their corn or soybean crops before they can be harvested. And farmers really don’t like it when a bear or several bears begin knocking down and gorging themselves on their field corn! Ask your local game warden, or visit the nearby feed and farm supply store to find out if there might be an area farmer who is encountering a problem with too many deer or an overactive bear that is ruining some of their crops. Whether your hunting is strictly within the borders of Pennsylvania, or if you travel across the country to hunt big game, it is certain that talking about whitetails is almost as enjoyable as feasting on a fresh backstrap gently roasted over the orange-red embers of a mesquite fire!

scarce since most bucks were being taken at such a young age. Enter the antler restriction regulation. Over the first few years of the new policy, hunters began to see more larger-racked mature bucks, and over the several years of the policy’s existence, attitudes began to change. A visit to local butcher shops or taxidermist businesses would reveal numerous larger, more mature and better developed bucks were being taken. And, the trend continues. Each year, taxidermists are being brought larger bucks and butchers are processing larger animals as well. Today, it seems that most Pennsylvania whitetail hunters are understanding and embracing the restriction. After all, if taking great tasting, organic meat to feed the family is your only interest, there are plenty of opportunities to take antlerless deer, which are tenderer and often better tasting! Hunting deer in Pennsylvania over bait is illegal throughout most of the state. Baiting is allowed conditionally on private property in the Southeast Special Regulation Area. house. While snakes have relatively poor eyesight and limited hearing they do have an excellent sense of smell and obviously have no problem “smelling” their way back to a chicken coup or a wood pile that may have chipmunks, mice or other potential prey. Their nostrils are mostly for respiration and may detect some odors, but the tongue plays an even greater role in smelling. Unlike people, a snake doesn’t stick its tongue out at you because it doesn’t like you or to be rude, but rather it’s wet, forked tongue is gathering odor

molecules to see if you are foe or prey or nothing to be concerned about. The tongue doesn’t actually smell but instead transfers the gathered molecules into the mouth where they find their way through two small openings in the roof of the mouth into the Jacobson’s organ. The Jacobson’s organ transfers that information to the brain, and the brain tells the snake how to react-all in about one second. Interesting, isn’t it? Well, now that I’m finished writing this piece I’m headed over to the man porch to see if Spot wants to join me for a glass of iced tea.

The following day the neighbor called me over to remove a large black rat snake from near her house-it was Spot ( Yes, I know a lot of you are glad I’m not your neighbor). This time I carried Spot several hundred yards back to the edge of the woods thinking, we would never see him again. The next afternoon when I pulled into my driveway, a large black rat snake was sunning itself in the gravel – it was Spot; I put him back into the field behind the

hen the 2019 version of the Williamsport Crosscutters emerged from the locker room donning their sparkling white home uniforms to meet the local media for the first time before the season began in midJune, the day was warm, the sky blue and no moisture was falling from the sky. It was almost a perfect day for their Bowman Field debut. As the players and coaches mingled with media members, undeterred, the stadium’s ground crew was busily working in the background, seemingly unaware of the bevy of folks milling around the dugout area. That is a baseball fact of life. No one comes out to

see them perform and they get their most scrutinized attention only when the rains are falling and they race to get the tarp in place. When the Crosscutters arrived in June head groundskeeper Cam Richardson and his crew had been caressing the stadium’s turf and dirt since Valentine’s Day, four months earlier. “Our job started about mid-February,” Richardson noted. “Those early tasks were to get things squared away from the winter and to get the field ready for Penn College and the high school games that are played here. So our season started months before the Crosscutters arrived in town.”

Richardson is employed by Brightview Landscapes, the firm contracted by Major League Baseball, to maintain the field. The grounds crew consists of field supervisor Isaiah Lienau (who spent much of June in London supervising ground crew operations for the two games played there Scott between the Red Sox and Lowery Yankees on June 29 & 30), Richardson and two interns. Since the advent of the MLB/Little League Classic three years ago MLB has played a leading role in keeping Bowman Field in immaculate condition. Since MLB’s involvement over $4-million of improvements

have been made. “Cam is employed by Brightview and Major League Baseball so we don’t have to go out and find a head groundskeeper,” explained Gabe Sinicropi, Crosscutters vicepresident of marketing & public relations. “The Crosscutters are responsible for paying for the assistant grounds crew members. We have daily contact with Cam. They know what they are doing. We just need to keep them clued in on the Crosscutters needs, what the team is doing day-to-day and what their field schedule may be. But as far as normal maintenance they take care of the field. It is really great to have experienced hands doing this very important job.” “I wasn’t able to see what Bowman Field was like previous to the improvements that have been made, but after the renovations

crazier you get the more time you have to spend on the mower.” “Our lawn movers are equipped with little rollers that push the grass in certain directions. So as we cut, light and dark colored stripes appear on the field. The light colors appear to be going toward the outfield wall and the dark colors are coming toward the infield. That affect is created by the reflection of light and how the grass is bent by the rollers as we mow in two different directions.” “We cut the outfield grass and foul territory at one inch and the infield at one and a quarter inches.” Richardson explained that often the infield grass is cut shorter than the outfield but as the Crosscutters do a lot of practicing on the infield the grass is kept a little longer to keep it stronger and healthier. Asked about why the infield seems to be constantly being watered even in instances where it may have just recently rained, Richardson explained it is all about the dirt. “The dirt on our infield has been specifically engineered and almost every major league team has the kind of dirt we have. The dirt comes out of Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania and it is a champion when it comes to water. It drains wonderfully and can take a lot of water. We may get an inch of water the day before and we could be watering a couple hours after the rain has stopped.” “We put in some very long days. On a typical game day we are here from 8:30 a.m. until after 11:00 p.m. Most people probably don’t realize that. But when the team is out of town it becomes more like a regular work day. We just come in, get our work in and go home.”

everything is immaculate,” Richardson added. “There are certain rules that need to be adhered to and we are doing our best to carry those out. This operation is a change from what goes on with a normal minor league team.” Just like the Crosscutter’s players Richardson’s crew has responsibilities they must follow. “First is the mowing,” Richardson detailed. “If it is a game day we are mowing every day. Second is the moisture. This is especially true with the infield dirt. You don’t want the dirt to be too hard or two soft. You have to find that happy medium. That is what the players like and we have to maintain that texture. The weather is the villain when you consider the heat and the rain. Lastly, is the constant checking of the weather forecast. We need to see what the radar is showing and be ready for tarp pulls if they become necessary.” “Just like the players have batting and fielding practice, we do have tarp pull practice. All the people who are new to the Cutters this year we run them thru some practice just so they are familiar with what needs to be done when that time comes.” Asked what is considered a good time for getting the tarp to cover the field, Richardson replied, “As quick as possible!” Baseball fans are familiar with the intriguing patterns cut on the outfield grass surfaces of Major League stadiums. Referencing patterned grass cutting at Bowman Field Richardson’s crew doesn’t get too fancy. “For the most part here we just try to keep things pretty straight laced. At the beginning of the season we used a checkerboard pattern and we like to keep things traditional. I try not to get too crazy with it because the

Our Rose Valley Walleye

I

reached out to a friend of mine and asked if he’s been doing any fishing. No. I’m way too busy man but let’s give it a try sometime. Anything going on Friday? SCORE. We made plans to meet up at the East boat launch before the sunrise. Rose Valley Lake is the largest body of water in Lycoming County. The man-made reservoir covers 389 acres, and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission manages it. I told you last week that Rose Valley is an extremely popular destination for local paddlers, but its primary use is for recreational fishing. Located just a few miles north of Williamsport, Rose Valley can be fished year round. She yields an assortment of different warm water species. We catch a ton of largemouth bass and pickerel during the spring and summer. Ice fishermen routinely harvest a healthy population of yellow perch and monster panfish. There are a few muskies and some walleye in Rose Valley, but finding these larger fish can be quite difficult. #foreshadowing.

Ian Scott and I have only known each other for a few years. He’s a great dude, and we both love the outdoors. Ian grew up on Rose Valley Lake and is a master of catching the big ones. I was ecstatic when he invited me to go trolling from his boat again. I am more of a stream fisherman, and I am actually getting bored with catching trout. Besides, I wanted to land a 20inch walleye. It’s on my bucket list. Rose Valley Lake was constructed in the mid-60s, and the idea of this recreational facility was tossed around for quite some time. It took eight years for the Fish and Boat Commission to build her. They blocked and redirected Mill Creek by creating a dam that measured 25 feet high and 410 feet long. The water eventually poured into the basin to form the existing 389 acres. Rose Valley was officially dedicated on June 24, 1973. Funding for the project came from the state as well as a grant from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. The project also included three boat launches and parking. The same goes for Lake Road and

the new bridge. The Commission eventually reimbursed four property owners. The existing parcels included some farmland but mostly swamp and wetlands. I touched base with Jamie Ian the night before. Spencer One. I didn’t want him to feel obligated. Maybe he was out celebrating. #fourth. Second. My ten-year-old son wanted to tag along. What? His baseball season is now over, and he said he wanted to start fishing again. Are you feeling OK, J? Ian confirmed, and his boat was already in the water when we pulled in. Jensen was out of bed and ready by 5:00 a.m. It’s a miracle. What happened to my son? There wasn’t any traffic as we were the only crazies on the lake. Who goes fishing at dawn the day after a late night of fireworks? Ian provided the tackle, and we started trolling the weed beds and structures with our lindy rigs. It’s a totally different kind of fishing, but Ian is a great teacher. Jensen did great as he was paying close attention to

his line. We each caught a few bass by 6:30 a.m. and all of the sudden my rod tipped. I immediately set the hook and felt something big. Jensen. Here take this. Nice and easy. Walleye are very strange fish. Once they are hooked, they almost feel like a snag. When they get closer to the surface or boat, the real fun begins. Jensen did his best. This fish didn’t want to give in. Ian finally grabbed her with the net. High fives. Our first walleye over 20 inches — a total team effort. Special thanks to Ian for the assist on a great father-son memory. Rose Valley Lake. A great asset to Lycoming County. Cheers.
