matter what happened, Mike never got rattled, and the expression on his face hardly ever changed. My Dad was visibly upset for Mike when Carl Everett of the Red Sox broke up his perfect game in the 9th at Fenway. I remember his exact words as the ball left the bat. “Oh sh*t,” as he slammed the flipper down and turned off the game. The flipper is what we called the TV remote. Mike was less emotional on the mound. A quick, “you gotta be kidding me” look, and that was it. It also didn’t hurt Mike’s popularity that he was just flat-out outstanding on the mound. From that first start in Baltimore, all the way to his last start for the New York Yankees that finished off his first 20 win season. Baseball fans followed the Orioles and Yankee schedule and pitching rotation like it was the weather forecast hoping to tune in on TV or go to the ballpark and watch Mike work. My Dad predicted, maybe five years into Mike’s career, that if he stayed healthy, he would have a shot at being our area’s first Hall of Fame baseball player. He was concerned about the number of wins Oriole closer Jose Mesa, and other O’s relief pitchers cost Mike. He would say, “Three or four blown saves a year equals 30 or 40 wins over a career.” Thank goodness this did not come back to haunt Mike. Dad was right on it, though. Those lost wins would have probably put him at the magical 300 total that guaranteed Cooperstown. Back to that special family bond creat-

It’s what you hope for the day your second son is born. The way that Mark has followed, supported, joked around with, and provided that special brotherly love could be a story in itself. It has been amazing to watch. When Mark takes the time to write an article about his brother, it is a must-read. Tip of my cap with no logo on it to brother Mark. We will have a Webb Weekly tribute to Mike and his induction into the Hall of Fame in our August 14th edition, just before the start of the Little League World Series. That just seemed like a perfect fit. Again a Webb Weekly tip of the cap to Mike Mussina and his family. I’ll have to see if he can get me one of those National Baseball Hall of Fame hats. Remember a billed cap is a man’s jewelry. God Bless America.

Let’s Cook!
W
e all know that I enjoy cooking, and while I consider myself to me a pretty decent cook, there is obviously always areas that I could improve. My knife skills are pretty atrocious for example. But there have been a few tips and tricks that I have picked up over the years that have improved my kitchen skills and made me more efficient in the kitchen, so I figured I would share them with you! Don’t overcrowd the pan. You might think you have enough room in your skillet for an extra piece of chicken, but if it’s questionable, don’t risk it. There’s a chance the heat won’t distribute properly to the rest of the food in the pan, thus affecting flavor or, worse, creating a health risk. As a preventative measure, leave a few inches between each item to ensure they cook thoroughly. Also, if you are cooking, say cubed beef for beef stew, over crowding the pan will often make the beef steam instead of brown and make it tough. Let red meat sit before cutting into it. Even a well-done steak should never taste dry. [side note: if you order your steak welldone in front of me, I will probably leave] To prevent a steak from losing its juicy interior, place it directly on top of aluminum foil after taking it off the stove or grill. Carefully wrap the steak in the foil and let it sit for approximately five minutes. This allows the juices to settle before you cut into the meat. The meat will continue to cook while it is in the foil so if you prefer medium steak, you
should take it off when it’s medium rare. Store spices in the right location. To prolong the life of your spices, keep them in a cool, dark place. Don’t store them on Steph top of the stove, as heat Nordstrom and humidity can alter their flavor. This is something that I keep reading about, but never do. I ALWAYS keep my spices in the cupboard above the stove. Honestly, pretty much everyone I know does this and I always kinda thought that was the point of those cupboards. Shut the stove off before eggs are done. The trick to great eggs is to not overcook them! Whether you scramble, fry, or poach, always turn off the stove a few minutes before the eggs look done — even when they seem a bit runny. The remainder of the heat will cook them to fluffy perfection. Chop herbs with salt. To prevent herbs from flying all over the place when chopping, sprinkle a bit of salt onto the board. This will keep them in place. Add salt to boiling pasta water. When you make pasta, salting boiling water will add flavor from the inside out. The rule is about 1-2 tablespoons for a large pot of water, stir it until it dissolves, and once boiling, add pasta. It sounds simple (and it is!), but it will elevate the taste of your dish. Use pasta water to create a pasta sauce.
If you thought your pasta tasted good before, wait until you try this trick. Before dumping used pasta water, add a cup of it to your saucepan. Then, add the pasta directly into the skillet. The salty water will add more flavor to your dish. Reserved pasta water also contains starch that can be used to adjust the consistency of sauce. Your taste buds will appreciate it — and the texture will be spot on. Trust me. Use a paper towel to preserve vegetables. It never feels good to throw away food you haven’t touched, especially produce. Prolong the life of vegetables by wrapping them loosely in a dry paper towel and placing them in a re-sealable plastic bag. Oxygen is not a friend of veggies, so get as much air out of containers and bags before sealing. Also, avoid washing until you are ready to eat produce. And make sure to leave ample room in your refrigerator and produce drawer. Overstocking can cause less air to flow through the refrigerator, which can cause uneven temps with food expiring faster. Keep the root of the onion intact to help with slicing. This is one of the best tips I have learned in cooking. Onions can be difficult to slice into without making a mess. To cut them evenly, do not remove the root. While keeping it intact, peel the onion and slice in a horizontal direction. Then, cut down vertically to create perfectly minced pieces. If you want to see this technique in action and learn a simple way to cut onions quickly and without waste, I suggest looking up Gordon Ramsey’s video on how to cut an onion. He is a great teacher and I’m fairly sure he doesn’t even swear in the video!

he year was 1939. FDR was President of the United States, Arthur James was Governor of Pennsylvania. It was perhaps the greatest year in film history with the release of such all-time classics as “Gone With the Wind,” “Mr. Smith Goes To Washington,” “The Wizard of Oz,” and “Gunga Din.” Sadly, it was also the year that World War II began with Hitler’s invasion of Poland. Locally, Charles Wolfe was Mayor of Williamsport. More enduringly, the James V. Brown Library’s Bookmobile made its debut on July 10, 1939. Miss Frances Kilburn began driving that first Bookmobile on rural Lycoming County roads to bring library service to the people. Since that time, a variety of vehicles have continued to travel throughout the county, bringing books, music, movies and more to the people in rural areas, schools, and care facilities. According to the Institute of Museum and National Library Services, in 2014 there were 23 Bookmobiles in Pennsylvania. The Brown Library operates two of those with the Bookmobile and Storymobile, the early childhood vehicle that visits local childcare facilities. Library officials state that Bookmobiles are a cost-effective means of providing
library services to large geographic areas. Bookmobiles, like libraries, continue to meet the needs of their communities by offering free access to the latest technology and materials to users of all ages. The Lycoming County Library System’s Bookmobile visits nearly 50 sites during its two-week rotation, including senior centers, low-income housing, personal care homes, private schools and more. “Last year we went 6,011 miles — that’s travel, year-round,” Kevin Renehan, outreach manager at the library, told Webb Weekly. “In a county of our size — the largest in the state — mobile libraries support Pennsylvania’s initiative to provide social and civic literacy to our underserved and rural communities.” Bookmobile driver, Vanessa Martin stated, “I think the Bookmobile has a wonderful impact on the community. It is utilized at every location. Not only do people look forward to the DVDs because not everyone has cable in our community, but the books are always taken out and returned. The Bookmobile is amazing because the service it does for the community, it provides the magic of stories and possibilities in different forms to people that appreciate it and look forward to it.” Some of the people that the Bookmobile serves weighed in with their thoughts. Brown Library is launching a community campaign for a new vision for outreach services. Our goal is to create a new expanded service model for outreach that specializes in reaching specific target populations of children, rural residents, the workforce, seniors and senior care facilities. Our mission is to take library services to where the people are, to established deep connections with the people we serve, to bring life-changing stories and knowledge of the outside world to individuals with mobility and transportation issues, to foster the love of reading, and to bring opportunities for lifelong learning to our rural citizens and the people that need us the most. Our vision is to replace our aging Bookmobile with three specialized vehicles that will revolutionize our outreach to the community. The first of the specialized vehicles will serve as a second Storymobile serving the high demand of child care facilities throughout the county, the second outreach vehicle will serve as a mobile lending library that serves the far reaches of our rural population with a specialized collection for public and corporate stops, the third outreach vehicle will engage with residents of senior care facilities bringing materials in a transit van and a programming librarian that can conduct library services and programming directly inside the care facility.” There are no late fees for Bookmobile items, and Bookmobile materials can be returned at any county library. faithful Bookmobile user. “Today, things are not so easy for me getting around, so when the Bookmobile comes to my home. I am so thankful as I can continue to read the books I like,” Kennedy said. “The elderly need the Bookmobile so that we can enhance our lives with books and videos.” Theresa Bessette, a resident of Williamsport Manor, looks forward to the Bookmobile because she can’t get to the library with her mobility issues. “I read a book every couple of days. “I can get ten DVDs at a time and 100 books if I wanted.” Renee Moore, LPN, a resident care manager at Presbyterian Home, said her residents also look forward to the Bookmobile. “Residents involved with Bookmobile enjoy the genre options and having access to this,” she said. “I’ve worked here for five years, and as long as I’ve been here, the Bookmobile has been coming. We appreciate Vanessa and all she does for our residents.” The Bookmobile is part of the library’s outreach services. Also included in that is the Storymobile. The Storymobile visits childcare facilities across Lycoming County, providing hundreds of children in these centers with carefully selected and age-appropriate books that enrich their early learning experiences. The Storymobile services primarily preschoolers with a set schedule, but it also appears in parades and community festivals. According to Barbara McGary, Executive Director, “Coming this fall, the James V.

Gazette and Bulletin July 22, 1929 Dedication of Airport is Success From Every Angle
Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.
W
illiamsport’s fine new airport was dedicated Saturday afternoon by Edward P. Warner, editor of “Aviation” air magazine, with a total of 79 planes registered in taking part. Yesterday’s activities were made up mostly of planes moving and passenger flights by commercial planes present. Five transatlantic flyers, a record seldom achieved by any airport, were present during the day for the celebration, which was attended by 35,000 people. Miss Amelia Earhart, the last of the five to arrive, did not come in until a majority of the crowd had started home. Other transatlantic fliers present were: Clarence D. Chamberlin, who in June 1927, flew from Roosevelt Field, New York to
Elsenborn, Germany. Bert Acosta, who accompanied Commander Byrd on the flight from Roosevelt Field to Ver-Sur-Mir in France in 1927, George Haldeman who flew from New York to France in October 1927, Edward F. Schlee, also in the fall of 1927. Planes of almost every type were present for the dedication from the smallest planes manufactured, on up through the service planes to the great Ford tri-motor planes. As a fitting close to the great dedication, 400 noted pilots, aeronautical experts, and men and women of the city and surrounding locations attended the aviation banquet held in the Park Hotel Saturday evening. J.A. Braunbeck, a former Newberry man, won first prize of $300 from the local service clubs in the “On to Williamsport” race by flying from Kansas City, Kansas, a distance of 990 miles.

laidback style for mid-length/layered bobs. For shorter-haired ladies, you can get some easy volume and texture with dry shampoo or a specific texturizing spray. In general, no matter your hair length, go with travel-sized versions of shampoo, conditioner, hairspray, and style gel. Speaking of travel-size, don’t forget to pack a bottle of top coat polish for quick nail fixes. Whether you’re making sandcastles at the shore, collecting sticks for the fire pit, or zip-lining along a ravine, keep your nails chip-free by packing a clear topcoat in your carry-on. Apply every other night while on vacation to protect your nails and extend the life of your mani-pedi. Vacation makeup is kind of an oxymoron. Unless you’re going on a highstyle/big-city dream vacation, chances are you won’t need a fully made-up face each and every day of your trip. And, to be honest, who wants to lug around all of those compacts, palettes, and brushes? You can eschew all the rigmarole of foundation, blush, eyeshadow, etc., while still appearing camera ready for those vacay pics with a well-shaped brow. Fuller eyebrows are on-trend, as they help frame your face, emphasize your eyes, and give you a semi-polished look sans makeup. Even if you forgo the full-on body wax, at least get your brows cleaned up and
pack along some soft-holding gel and an eyebrow brush to maintain your arches on vacation. Also, don’t forget to exfoliate. From the tip of your head, down to your toes, a good body polish scrub is not only great to gear up for vacation, but it’s also a nice way to pamper (and repair) yourself once you’re back home. Like SPF, there are different exfoliates for different parts of your body. Consider sun exposure, hair removal method, sunblock formula, and humidity levels when prepping your full body scrub. Your face is way more delicate than your knees, so you’ll want a different cleanser for your body and face. Dryer climates will most likely also dry out your skin, so best to work in a moisturizing element with your exfoliant, while humid weather may call for a more deep-cleaning scrub. Lastly, consider working a bit of beauty into your vacation. One of my favorite holiday treats is to book a massage or get my nails done. Even for short weekend trips, check out the local day spa and see if they have any specials for travelers. Stick to standard services, like foot massages and manicures. You don’t want to try new-to-you treatments, like chemical peels, or change up your look with a haircut or color. The important thing is to find a bit of time to relax and treat yourself this vacation season.

hen I started Andrea’s Country Home Cookin, I never dreamed it would take off like it has. It has went further than I ever thought possible, and it’s thanks to you, my fans. You have shared my facebook page, tried my recipes, purchased my cookbook, read my new column and stuck by me for over a decade. I can’t thank
you enough! I had a first a few weeks ago. I received some fan mail! Like not an email, or private message, it was an actual stamped letter. This was pretty special. It’s a nice feeling to know folks read my column and enjoy it! Rita, I will surely give you my meatloaf recipe! This recipe my momma has made since I was knee high. She got the recipe from a friend and it has been a meal we enjoy
around our table for years. As I made this Monday night to prep for my column, I kept trying to get a flattering picture. Meatloaf just doesn’t look attractive, but man does it taste Andrea good!! I swear I took McElroy 20 plus pictures of this meatloaf. As I’m getting these shots my husband is indulging in his meal going “MMMM.” Then, more “Mmmmms.”
I laughed and said “Here I sit trying to get a good photo of this meatloaf so it looks good enough for people to want to try it, and you are in the background just raving over it.” He is always so sweet about my cookin’. Plus, my family is used to me getting pictures of food at the table. It’s the life of a food blogger. But I sure hope you like this recipe, and I am sorry I have never made Chili Con Carne. I had to google it, but looks similar to just plain ol’ chili. I’ll be sure to share my chili recipe this fall!

I also want to take the time to thank another fan. This person has faithfully messaged me about my column every Tuesday after she reads it since I’ve started writing for the Webb back in May. She tells me how much she looks forward to getting it ,and enjoys reading it each week. Can’t tell you how much it means to me! Thank you Kathy Robbins! If you love pizza, she owns Pudgies Pizza in Williamsport. One of my favorite pizza places! Their party pizzas are hands down the best! Those little square pieces loaded with cheese. Mmmmm! CELEBRATE THE SOUNDS OF LIFE
Artisan Hearing Technologies, LLC
adding quality to life every day
These new hearing aids have settings which I can control myself with the touch of my finger. I had another set of expensive hearing aids and they were no comparison to these hearing aids. It’s like a whole new world for me out there for me to be able to hear everything around me. My whole family is happy for me as I was missing out on a lot of things and I didn’t know it. Now when my neighbor yells to me I don’t have to go over to see what she said. Jennifer Burget is very professional and wants her customers satisfied.

t a recent County C o m m i s s i o n e r ’s Meeting, there was quite a debate over televising the proceedings. Now, the problem with the idea is that even though they are televised in other area municipalities, it has revealed the dirty little secret that these meetings are — well, how can we say this but to just say it — boring! The ascetics are horrible to work with. I mean, you have a single camera pointed toward the front where the officials are seated, one microphone to pick up all the sound, which is bad enough, but what happens when others address the official? All we get is hearing their disembodied voice off somewhere, as we get to watch the officials nod their heads
or scratch them, as the case may be. Of course, the county could spend more money and get more than one camera and better acoustics, but this requires a technician to monitor it all, edit the material, load it up for viewing, etc., etc., and with that, it has turned into a real Magilla Gorilla. Let’s face it; this idea needs some serious adjustments if it is going to work. If the county is stuck with the one camera/one microphone situation, then these deficiencies should be turned into a marketing feature. Instead of advertising

COUNTY HALL “Commissioner Meeting,” make it “Cure for Insomnia.” Picture this television commercial — the three commissioners staring forward, quiet music in the background, and a voice-over softly remarks, “Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Can’t get your mind off your day’s troubles? Try watching, ‘Cure for Insomnia,’ a weekly program of the Lycoming County Commissioners. Watch your eyes droop listening to Commissioner Tony Mussare speak quietly because he never seems to get close enough to his microphone to be heard. Find yourself slowly slipping into Sleepy Time hearing the never-modulating voice of Chairman Jack McKernan or the ever-charming/beguiling voice of Commissioner Rick Mirabito. Take your commissioners with you to bed tonight, and you’ll never sleep better.” OK, maybe that might not be the best way to promote the Commissioner’s Program. Perhaps it just needs a twist, like naming it “Pet Your Program.” Each of the commissioners has their
own special program they like to promote, so when they mention it in the meeting, those watching can call in that they caught it. So, when Tony Mussare says, “Eagle Scouts,” or Rick Mirabito mentions, “early reading programs,” viewers get on the phone and get points for catching them petting their program. Rather than prizes (which the county cannot afford, of course), winners could get to come to the meeting and pet their own program. Still not impressed, huh? OK, maybe the format needs to be totally changed. How about a daytime drama, perhaps with the name “As the County Churns.” Or maybe a game show, something like “Do you know more than a County Commissioner?” See? The possibilities are endless! So, I am all in for televised commissioner meetings, and will freely volunteer my expertise in advising how to make them as exciting and interesting as possible. That’s what we do here at County Hall Corner!

oung acting and musical talent will abound when the Student Summer Stock program presents “Newsies” at the Community Arts Center on July 26, 27 and 28. Join Jack, Davey, Katherine, and others as they take a stand against Joseph Pulitzer’s unfair labor practices. Based on the 1992 motion picture and inspired by a true story, the “Newsboys Strike of 1899,” NEWSIES features a Tony Award-winning score by Alan Menken (Little Shop of Horrors, Sister Act) and Jack Feldman, and a book by Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein (Kinky Boots). The 2019 Student Summer Stock will be directed by Dr. C. Austin Hill, a Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre at Lycoming College. Dr. Hill has directed over three-dozen productions and is excited to get to know the talented middle school and high school students in the greater Lycoming County area. “I’ve been a fan of NEWSIES for decades, and I adore this stage version,” Hill told Webb Weekly. “This is the perfect show for the Student Summer Stock — it’s about the power of children
to change their world —but only when they stick together and support one another. As a historian, the Newsboy’s Strike of 1899 (a bit of a misnomer, as newsgirls were major players too) has always been an inspiration to me.” The Student Summer Stock program’s mission is to offer an opportunity for students to create alongside working professional theater-makers so they can bring new passion and skills back to their community and educational programs. The community looks forward to this production every summer, and it has become a true testament to the quality and quantity of available talent in the Greater Williamsport area. The Student Summer Stock at the CAC presents a student-centric show with professional production values to a large and enthusiastic audience in the beautiful Community Arts Center. Students from six area schools are represented in the cast of “Newsies.” “We are excited to be presenting ‘Newsies’ with this talented group of local students. This program is a great opportunity for these kids to work together towards a common goal of creating a professional-quality production,” said CAC marketing

Manager Emmalee Williams. “These students come from many local area school districts. We hope that the skills they gain during our Student Summer Stock program are shared with their respective school drama and theater departments during the new school year. This program is more than just creating or performing in a summer production; it’s about raising up the next generation of theater goers and supporters of the performing arts.” Sharon Mack, the CAC’s Executive Director, echoed Williams’ remarks. “It is so important to be out in
the community and invite the community to participate by attending a performance. It is an emotional connection that is developed through these small pop-up performances. When people get to experience a live taste of what’s to come. And they get to see these incredible students up close and personal.” Show dates and times are July 26 and 27 at 7:30 p.m., July 28 at 2 p.m. Tickets on sale now! $18+ at https://www. caclive.com/event/student-summerstock-newsies/. Faith Conversations…
Live By Faith: Noah
T
he first nine chapters of the book of Genesis describe an ancient and mysterious era. Frankly, every time I read this section, I end up with more questions than I do answers. I’m a fan of head-scratchers — and the first part of Genesis is chock-full of them. However, the Bible was not intended to be a history book or a science book,
so most of my head-scratching questions go unanswered. First and foremost, the Bible is a love story — and the answers that are important to that love story are presented with stunning clarity. That being said, the Bible would seem untrustworthy if it made outlandish statements about history or science. It doesn’t — which is a rather amazing feat for a
work of antiquity. And regarding its intended purpose, it is fully reliable. There are four truths presented in the first nine chapters that are essential if we are going to follow the love Tim Hartzell story: God created. The how and when of creation should not be overly important to us — and it certainly isn’t worth fighting about. The soaring statements of
creation provide a grand overview of cataclysmic events that supersede our wildest imaginations. Rather than dissecting the narrative, we should stand in awe of it. God created us in His image for divine relationship. God designed us to be with us because He loves us. It is the primal truth that provides the context of the entire Biblical narrative. If you are looking to address the instinctive questions of life, you will find the answers in the Bible. Who am I? Why am I here? What is wrong with me? What is the cure? What

that anything that has the potential for extreme good, also has the potential for extreme evil. If you’re not familiar with that law, consider nuclear power. In medicine, nuclear power has the potential to be used for extreme good. But in warfare, nuclear power has the potential to create mass destruction and death — extreme evil. Mankind carries both extreme potentials, but in the run-up to the flood, it was the potential for extreme evil that was on full display. God’s love is relentless. The story

must I do? I call these questions instinctive because we naturally ask them — and mankind has always asked them. These questions reveal the fingerprints of God on us. We ask because He created within us a desire to know — and to know Him. Mankind fell from grace. Adam and Eve broke the basic covenant that God had established, and then the love story got very messy. From the murder of Abel to the awful condition of the world before the flood of Noah, mankind fell hard. The Law of Extreme Potential states

of the flood is tough to read, but the sparing of Noah and his family reveals God’s unrelenting desire to love mankind. The story provides a reset — a new opportunity and a new covenant by which God and mankind could relate. To this day, a rainbow in the sky reminds us of God’s relentless love. The writer of Hebrews 11 selects Noah as the next hero of the faith in our series. Here’s what he writes about Noah: “By faith Noah, when
warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith, he condemned the world and became the heir of the righteousness that is in keeping with faith.” In our quest to learn more about what it means to live by faith, Noah provides a lesson in swimming against the cultural current. The description of humanity at the time of Noah was awful — it was all corruption and violence — so

the word of life.” Noah also teaches us what it means to have faith in things not yet seen. God had declared that there was going to be a flood. We’re not really sure if Noah even knew what that meant. The concept of a flood was likely foreign to Noah. But God called him to build a big boat and fill it with lots of animals, so he did. And it took a long time. I’m sure it wasn’t easy to keep building that boat, but faith kept him moving forward for many years. I can’t even imagine the amount of time, materials, energy, and money
he poured into that boat — and all based on faith. Jesus uses that very story to illustrate how you and I must be prepared for His return. While teaching about His second coming, Jesus said, “But about the day and hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew
nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all way. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken, and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken, and the other left. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.” Noah lived during a very difficult time as he waited on God’s promise. He was faithful to do everything God commanded. What will be said of us? Live by faith. PA #121099

much so that God decided to wipe all living things from the face of the earth. Against that backdrop, Noah stands out as someone righteous and blameless. As believers in Jesus Christ, we can do the same. According to Philippians 2:14 and 15, people of faith can stand out and make an eternal difference, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, ‘children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.’ Then you will shine among them like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to

The Roving Sportsman… Legislation By Jon Pries
A
s responsible sportsmen, we have a duty to be aware of past legislation that affects our sport and pay attention to those laws that are being proposed that could affect the future of our outdoor activities. Part of the pride that hunters, fishermen, and conservationists can feel is reflected in some of those acts or laws. The Pittman-Robertson Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration Act, which
was signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on September 2, 1937, and became effective the following year, is a prime example of how sportsmen are the greatest supporters of wildlife of all species. The Act took over a pre-existing 11% excise tax on firearms and ammunition that had been going into the U.S. Treasury, and kept the funds separate, giving it to the Secretary of the Interior to distribute to the States. It is given to states based on the area of the state and

its number of licensed hunters. States must submit a plan for the use of said monies, which can include research, surveys, management of wildlife, and/ or habitat and acquisition or lease of land. This one, very important, piece of legislation has provided states with funding for research and projects that would have otherwise been unaffordable. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, as of January of 2010, over two billion dollars had been generated through the program. Another source found that hunters spend between 2.8 and 5.2 billion dollars a year on taxable merchandise,
thus generating between 177 and 324 million dollars a year in PittmanRobertson money! These are facts that all hunters and firearms owners can be proud of. And then there is California! Yes, they are on the “left coast,” and yes, they seem to do some rather radical things at times. A perfect example is the passage of Proposition 63, which regulates the sale of ammunitions and became effective on July 1, 2019. Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom, a longtime advocate of gun control, championed the new law. It is long, involved, and quite complicated, but the following are a few of the highlights of their newest

Act, which would provide $1.4 billion in dedicated annual funding to state and tribal fish and wildlife agencies. Such funds would go toward the conservation and monitoring of at-risk species as identified by recent meetings of state and tribal wildlife agency professionals addressing conservation and management of wildlife populations within their boundaries. The National Wild Turkey Foundation, along with other conservation organizations, supports this proposed legislation, stating that the need for this legislation is urgent, as it will be a gamechanger for wildlife conservation on the scale that the Pittman-Robertson Act was back in 1937. The Pennsylvania Game Commission supports The Recovering America’s Wildlife Act and would stand to receive dedicated annual federal fish and wildlife conservation funding that could exceed $30 million to address the conservation actions for these species better. While past legislation has been extremely beneficial on behalf of wildlife conservation, and while the future looks even brighter through proposed legislation, we must all pay attention to legislative matters to ensure that they are truly in the best interest of conservation and the future of hunting, shooting, fishing and all of the outdoor activities we currently enjoy.

gun law. You must be a resident of California to purchase ammunition, and it requires a background check each and every time you make a purchase. You must make purchases in a face-to-face scenario, meaning that you cannot purchase ammunition directly via the internet or mail order. It must be delivered to a licensed dealer where you can then finalize the purchase. A background check for each purchase will cost $1.00 and should take 1 to 3 minutes. If required, you may be subjected to a more in-depth check, which costs $19.00 and can take up to ten days (or longer, no doubt!). An individual may not transport any ammunition across the state line. Non-residents of California cannot transport any ammunition into the state of California and are restricted from purchasing ammunition within the state. All ammunition sales must be recorded by a licensed vendor, which means there will be permanent records kept of each and every ammunition purchase made. An interesting note is that 63% of the voters said “yes” to California’s Proposition 63! Part of their desire is that it will set an example for other states to follow. On the horizon is the reintroduction into the House of Representatives of The Recovering America’s Wildlife

After dark can be the absolute best bass fishing in a mere three hours? After time to work a surface plug. You should also have a couple of all, I’ve been talking about bass fishing for years in these columns, and I haven’t even subsurface type lures such as the lipped minnow lures that dive and wobble when come close to covering the subject. a good choice; plastic tubes, soft plastic grubs, plastic crayfish, or other creature baits are good choices. It’s also a good idea to have some of the jigs that are weedless or at least weed resistant. While we are in the soft plastics in wouldn’t hurt to have a small assortment of different sizes of plastic worms. These worms can be rigged a number of ways to make them weedless and trust me; they can be very effective. Don’t forget to add a couple of wacky rig worms as well. This should be enough to get you well on your way but trust me if you are smitten with the bass fishing bug you are going to end up with a half-dozen tackle boxes full of lures like me and a lot of other bass fishing nuts.

otorists headed south on Route 15 may be unaware of the change as they begin their ascent up the Bald Eagle Mountain. While a new sign adorns the entrance, the familiar building looks the same as it always has, but inside its doors, a whole new vibe is underway. Previously known as the West Branch Tennis Club, the facility has been under new management since February 1 and has taken on a new identity as the Central PA Tennis Center under the leadership of owner Karen Hooker. “I began playing tennis about nine years
ago. In that time, I gradually found that everything I was doing was somehow related to tennis,” Hooker explained. “Whether it was playing the game, my social life, or coaching at Williamsport High School, I was spending a lot of time here. My husband and I saw a natural fit. We knew the facility was for sale, so we followed through with the purchase and became the owners on February 1.” “We decided to change the name to the Central PA Tennis Center for a couple of reasons. It was important for us to represent our entire region. We are the only indoor facility for at least 75 miles around

here. It used to be a club, and some people still refer to us as a tennis club. But we wanted this to be open to everyone, so we took the word ‘club’ out and replaced it with ‘center.’ The previous owners, Steve and Laurie Wilson, were very organized and trained us when we made Scott the purchase. This has Lowery made for a very smooth transition. We are truly a tennis center, and everyone is welcome.” In making the change, the existing staff remains intact, Hooker added. “They know the members. They know tennis, and they know the community, but we did make one valuable addition, bringing in Maria Weisser as our operations manager.” Weisser is no stranger to the local sports scene. In her playing days, the former Maria Pioli was a standout athlete at Montoursville High School. She went on to a successful basketball career at Elizabethtown College where she played center on the school’s 1989 national championship team. “I am a huge tennis fan. I have gone to the U.S. Open many times and have always had a love for the sport. I am not a big player but greatly enjoy tennis in general”, Weisser said. “I’m responsible for the day-to-day operations: checking guests in, signing up new members, promoting the facility, organizing the various events we have
here, and working with the staff to make sure everything is running smooth. This facility is open to the public, and we want to make sure that everyone is aware of what we have to offer. We want to build upon what was already in place and to make it bigger and better and encourage more people to get involved with tennis, especially the younger generation.” Figures provided by the Tennis Industry Association reveals 5.3 million Americans are frequent tennis players (defined as playing 21 or more times a year). Twentyeight million more play less frequently each year on what is estimated to be 220,000 courts across the country. “I think interest in tennis locally is on the rise. With our women’s summer tennis league, the numbers are growing. Brandon Park has redone their tennis courts this spring, and South Williamsport put in brand new courts last year,” added Weisser. “I’ve had three children that have gone through playing sports at the high school and college level. I think playing multiple sports is a good idea. By narrowing your sports involvement at a young age, you never know if that is truly what you wanted or what you could excel at. I see that more and more. The great thing about tennis is it is a sport you can play until you’re well into late in life. We have several members into their 80s that come here to play and enjoying the sport. That says a lot and emphasizes that tennis can be a lifetime sport and social outlet.” The recent success of rising youth tennis standouts gives credence to the sports

“Bucknell was looking for a home court. They do not have one on their campus. They do have outside courts but were looking for a tennis facility that could be used as their home court. So we reached an agreement with Bucknell for this to be their home court and practice facility. It has been a wonderful relationship. We are open to all high schools and colleges, and many of them do use our facility during the winter months,” Hooker added. The Tennis Center is open Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Saturday & Sunday 9:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Monthly membership for adults over 21 is $21.00 a month. For youth up to 21 or a college student with ID is $8.25 a month. Additional information can be obtained by contacting the Center at www. centralpatenniscenter.com or by phone 570-326-2828. “I view this as more than just a place to play tennis. It is a gathering place for people who want to spend time together on the court, to watch & talk about tennis or just enjoy the social experience. We are also exploring other opportunities like Pickleball. There is a growing number of people in the community who want to learn the game. We are going to offer that here. Tennis is a social game that encourages fitness, integrity, and strategy, and it is a lifetime sport,” Hooker said. “Regardless of their tennis knowledge or age, the Tennis Center provides yearround programs that can be tailored to fit throughout the year. We encourage folks to stop by and learn what we are all about.”

increasing local popularity. “We have phenomenal athletes in our area that we can celebrate that calls attention to tennis,” Hooker points out. Olivia Dorner was third in the state last year as a freshman at South Williamsport and is currently ranked 55th in the nation for college recruits among rising sophomores. She is the number two ranked player in PA for USTA. When folks learn about someone from our area who is accomplishing good things, it says a lot about what we are doing here. It puts us on the national radar screen. And Olivia is not the only one. David Lindsay from the Lock Haven and Kase Schinnerer from Lewisburg are competing successfully with USTA. Katie Savage, of Loyalsock, placed 4th in the state last season as a freshman. They all play and practice at our facility.” “We are open to everyone and provide a great opportunity for people of all ages to come in and learn the game. Our head tennis Pro, John Dorner, provides instruction and lessons. We also run clinics for all ages beginning at five years old. If someone is interested in tennis but doesn’t have someone to play with that shouldn’t impede anyone from coming here. There are a lot of opportunities to join in with the clinics and camps we provide. We also will match individuals with other players if they don’t have someone to play with. And, of course, we have tennis leagues that are open to anyone to join.” The Tennis Center now also serves as Bucknell University’s home court.

backwoods setting and natural rhythms were so peaceful. It was another great day out. I am not an outdoor expert by any means, but you should always dress accordingly and wear the proper footwear while on the trails. I always recommend that you use extreme caution too. There are many slippery slopes and difficult terrains. Give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Pack out what you pack in. Get the next generation of kin involved with the great outdoors and keep things fun and interesting when you do. Our friends at Worlds End State Park cordially invite you to a full-day
Vista Trail is a challenging 4-mile loop that dissects the eastern portion of the park. You eventually climb to 1750 feet at Canyon Vista. Jensen and I headed up to Worlds End on a warm afternoon in June. The Park Office was our very first stop, and we agreed to try a new hike that was suggested. The LT Link Trail started right at the station. It took us along the banks of Loyalsock Creek. The water that day was crystal clear and flowing heavy. We came to the Double Run trailhead after a quick mile. The reward of this 1.2-mile swing was an up-close encounter with Cottonwood Falls. The

Worlds End Day 2019 will feature several presentations by many local organizations and state agencies. Come see Bald and Golden Eagles and learn all about these fascinating PA raptors. The Lycoming College Clean Water Institute will present an educational and entertaining “Science on the Sock” program. Environmental educator Jane Swift will coordinate fun activities for the kids. It is guaranteed to be a festive day. Hopefully, you can make it. Worlds End State Park is another treasure in the backyard. Cheers.
