Thirty-One Words to Live By

ongratulations and tip of my Webb Weekly cap to manager Cory Goodman and his South Side Major softballing East Regional Champions! (See Jamie Spencer’s column page 46.) The team is currently in Portland, Ore. competing in the Major Softball Little League World Series. This is the age equivalent to the Little League Baseball World Series held right here in South Williamsport. What a tremendous accomplishment by the team. We will be featuring the young ladies on the cover and within next week’s pages. Good luck and safe travels to the team and their fans heading West. Go get ‘em girls! Bring back the gold! Now back to your regularly scheduled program. If you are currently being discriminated against for any reason, I want to know about it. If you are being bullied for who you are, please reach out to me. If you feel your Constitutional rights are being infringed upon, in any way, shape or form, please contact me. My phone number is 570337-0755, and email jwebb@webbweekly. com are always available on page 4 of Webb Weekly. I believe in the Pledge of Allegiance to the United States of America that I was taught at Central Elementary School in South Williamsport. In grade school, I may not have understood the true meaning of these words, but I did know to stand straight, put my right hand on my heart, face the

American Flag and show respect. The older I get, the more understanding I have for that simple paragraph honoring our great Nation. “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.” If every American citizen or individual living within our borders honored, lived by and defended those 31 words, our Nation would be much more united. I hope in our schools today we are not only teaching the Pledge of Allegiance, but also the true meaning of the words being recited. As one journeys through life, the message should become clearer with each passing year. Do I think those words have applied to everyone during the history of our great Nation? Absolutely not. Do I think our Country is the greatest example of the evolution of democracy and correcting past mistakes? Absolutely. There has never been a nation on Earth that has been a work in progress for freedom that has attempted to make amends for any injustice of the past like the United States of America. What I am most concerned about is continuing the never-ending process of making our Nation the beacon of the words stated in our Pledge of Allegiance. If we all do this, we will pass a better America down to the generations to come. This is why I want to know if your pursuit of

life, liberty, and happiness is being stepped on in any manner. If so, I will stand with you in support. I do not want anyone’s vision of the American dream to be deterred — as long as it aligns with our Pledge of Allegiance and Constitution. I’m tired of seeing elected Jim officials in Washington Webb, Jr. reach into a deck of cards and pull out the race card, the hate card, the jealous of fellow Americans card, and especially the freedom of religion card, which seems to empower all except those who believe in the JudeoChristian values that our Country was founded upon. I could probably come up with a whole deck of political power play cards. These cards are used to create division amongst fellow Americans each and every day and gain political favor with potential voters. This deck is the foundation of the beyond liberal socialistic movement that is using the Democratic Party as a facade. I am a firm believer that most Democrats do not understand or believe in where this element is taking them. I believe that the media is doing our Country a complete injustice by not showing the far extreme left as the threat against democracy they really are. They give these individuals way too much airtime, but never dig into who they actually are and what they spew. The Democratic Party is intended to be a

proud party of the everyday hardworking people of America. Not a party looking for free, free, free or to educate millennials to ask not what they can do for their Country but what their Country can do for them. But what really scares me is where the media is going in supporting some of these people that have infiltrated our government. I forgot to mention the free, free, free card in that deck of 52. Or the frighten the elderly card. That’s the one played threatening senior Americans Social Security and health benefits. Who knows, I might be able to come up with a deck of more than 52. I could probably make it much easier on myself and just ask Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer or Bernie Sanders for them. Heck those three were there when this deck was first created; they’ve made a living at the trough of American taxpayers selling these cards. These are not the people I am worried about, however. It is this new generation of freshmen Congresspersons that CNN, MSNBC and all these liars of mainstream media want to be the face of the Democratic Party that should be feared. Oh, by the way, former VP Joe Biden is way out ahead of all the democratic candidates for president in every poll. You remember the debate; all raised their hand proclaiming every illegal alien should have better health insurance than our veterans. Where does this or the beliefs of those referred to as “The Gang” align with those precious “31 Words”? I’ll have much more on this next week. God Bless America.

International Beer Day

I

am a fan of craft beer. Craft beer and micro-breweries have taken the country and our area by storm in recent years. From IPAs to Gose to good old fashioned lagers, there is plenty to be found around town. The first Friday in August is ‘International Beer Day.’ International Beer Day is a day to celebrate and savor the world’s most popular alcoholic beverage. Raise a glass of beer to toast both breweries and bartenders. It is truly a global celebration, enjoyed by people over 50 countries around the world. People have enjoyed beer since about 6,000 B.C. Ancient civilizations even referred to it as a food staple. There are two categories of beer: Lager and Ale, and thankfully hundreds, if not thousands of varieties. Why there’s a beer variety for almost any and all discriminating drinkers. The exponential growth of small, local microbreweries, has resulted in a wide range of new and exciting varieties. The goals for International Beer Day are: • Enjoy beer! Gather with friends to enjoy the taste of beer. • Celebrate and recognize breweries and bartenders. • Celebrate all the beers of the world.

Here are some ways to participate in International Beer Day: • Drink beer, any is fine. • Sit on your patio Steph Nordstrom or deck, and soak in summer, along with a refreshing beer of your choice. • Go on a beer tour. Visit a brewery or micro-brewery. • Give a six pack or a growler of beer to a friend. • Have a beer at your local bar or pub. Thank the bartenders (and tip them!). • To truly celebrate this special day, you should drink imported beer from another country, but we aren’t that picky. We have a lot of places locally to celebrate International Beer Day! There are several amazing breweries or bars with great selections of your favorite style of beer. Riepstein’s will always be my local favorite. Bart is always working on something amazing on the West End, and has something for every taste. Personally, I’m still holding out for another round of his cucumber saision. New Trail Brewery is just up the road

from Riepstein’s. They are always doing something fun with their offerings. The inclusion of fruit and lactose they did during the fall and winter was amazing and they are doing hazy IPAs like no one else. The Bullfrog is always a Williamsport staple. Admittedly, I haven’t stopped in recently, but looking at their draft list, the Magno Mango Sour and the Farmhouse Sour Cherry Wheat both look amazing. The Edgar IPA is always a great choice too. Boom City Brewing is another great place for locally brewed beer. The American Pale Ale, hopped with Mosaic and Citra hops is great and their B.C. Hefe is always a solid choice. The new kid on the block is Therapy Brewing in Muncy. Not only are they brewing amazing beer, but the atmosphere can’t be beat. It’s a beautiful drive out there and the views from their porch and hill are amazing. But the beer is where it is at. The Easy Come Easy Gose is fantastic and the Nightshift coffee stout is on point. So get out and celebrate International Beer Day this Friday! Just remember to celebrate responsibly. Never drink and drive. Always use a designated driver or Uber or Lyft. Also, don’t get carried away, or you’ll be celebrating the holiday that falls on August 3rd … International Hangover Day!

River Valley Transit Heir To A Fine Public Transportation Tradition That Continues Into the Future By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

hen River Valley Transit celebrates its 50th year of existence on August 8 and 9 it will be commemorating a Williamsport area public transportation tradition that extends more than 150 years. The most enduring and perhaps bestremembered form of mass transit in Williamsport was the trolleys. Their 70-year run is still commemorated today with the running of the Herdic, Weightman and Stotz trolleys. The era of intra-city transportation began with the trolleys or streetcars in the late 1850s and early 1860s. The “Lumber Boom” that started to take off during that time gave rise to the wealthy class of lumber millionaires and, as an expression of civic pride, they encouraged the development of a streetcar or trolley line. According to the River Valley Transit website, “the period from the 1890s through World War I was the heyday for the trolleys. Trolley parties were very popular during the summer months, and parents would often charter a trolley car for an evening for children’s outings.” The trolleys did a brisk business bringing recreation seekers to various spots along the trolley lines. These included such places as a

nine-hole golf course just west of Woodmont Avenue, as well as Vallamont Park along the Vallamont line. This line also served the area of Athletic Park where Williamsport Millionaires, this city’s great professional baseball team in the Tri-State League from 1904 to 1910 played, copping three championships. Trolleys also took people to such venues as Starr Island and Indian Park. One trolley line even went from Campbell Street to the gates of the Wildwood Cemetery. The trolley lines’ equipment was always being improved to meet the expansion of business. Around the time of World War I, the trolleys started to have to battle competition from the now-burgeoning world of the automobile as well as jitney buses. Regular buses started to make their appearance around 1925, and this further cut into the trolley’s business. The last great blow that ultimately did the trolley in was the onset of the Great Depression. By June 1933 the trolleys were on their way out. On June 11, 1933, at 1 a.m. the last trolley in Williamsport ground to halt ending a glorious 70-year era. Almost immediately after the demise of the trolleys, buses replaced them under the auspices of a company owned by Olean, N.Y. businessman, Alvin R. Bush, and his newly christened Williamsport Transportation

WORLD’S

This was an era of cheap gas, and many more people had their own vehicles, causing ridership to take a dramatic turn downward. By 1967 Edwards sold out to the Transcontinental Bus System, but the purchase did not include the Williamsport Bus Company. It seemed that continued bus service for the citizens of Williamsport and the surrounding areas was endangered. Williamsport Mayor Richard J. Carey took the lead in trying to save the bus service by proposing that the City of Williamsport by the Williamsport Bus Company. It was announced in October 1968 that the city had purchased the bus company for $75,000. The city then aggressively pursued federal and state grants to help upgrade and expand that system, as well as the building of garage and maintenance facilities. On August 8, 1969, the City officially began operation of the buses under the newly created Bureau of Transportation. Tim Miller, Operations Manager for River Valley Transit, has been working for them for the 38 years. He said he even remembers when he was playing Little League during the late 1960s, there was a team in his league called “Williamsport Bus.” During his 38 years of service, he has seen RVT go through many changes and improvements. “I started at RVT (then City Bus) in January 1981, making me the 2nd longest employee here now after Bill Nichols. When I started, there were eight buses that City Bus received in the summer of 1980, which were the first buses we had that came equipped with a wheelchair lift, air conditioning, and power

Company. The bus fleet of the company began with 15 buses. Bush used the same schedules, stops, a nd routes as the old trolley system. World War II caused a number of changes to the operation of the bus system because of war caused fuel restrictions, many imposed by the federal Office of Defense Transportation. These changes included the reduction of a number of routes and the elimination of various bus stops. It was also difficult during these years to acquire new parts for the buses and get needed gasoline and lubricants, as well as new buses. As post-war normalcy returned, the bus system played a role in the growth of Williamsport and surrounding communities. Because of an increase in ridership and the growth in the number of buses running on Williamsport streets, particularly in the downtown area, Williamsport City Council passes ordinances making Fourth and Third Streets one-way thoroughfares in the environs of the downtown. As part of this alteration, the downtown stops were restricted to new stops on the south side of Third west of Court, the east side of Market south of Fourth, the north side of Fourth between Market and Court, and the west side of Market north of Fourth. The bus company began to run major deficits that could not be met without subsequent fare increases, something Bush was loath to do. Finally, Alvin R. Bush sold his bus company to the Edwards Motor Transit Company for a price of $33,000. The economic situation under the Edwards management got no better, and subsequent fare increases did not help the situation.

steering. We were still driving Twin Coach buses, which were purchased sometime in the ’70s and by the time I started were not in good shape. I will list some of the highlights I can think of below: • In 1983 we received 8 Neoplan buses so at that time we had 16 new buses including the 1980 RTSs. • Also, 1983 was the 50th anniversary of buses replacing Trolleys in Williamsport and a 50th anniversary took place on the Pine St. Mall • In 1988 we started service to Lycoming Mall and Muncy • In 1990 I became a supervisor after nine years as a driver • In the winters of ’93, ’94 and ’95 we dealt with some really bad snowstorms and the

flood in the winter of ’96 when we had buses helping to evacuate people from their homes along Lycoming Creek • In January 2000 we began using the new Transit Centre which meant all buses could meet in the same location making transferring from one bus to another easier for our passengers. Before this, we used bus bays on Market at 4th and on 4th St. in front of Franco’s and in front of Ramin’s Pharmacy. • In the Fall of 2005, we changed our name to River Valley Transit from City Bus. • In 2012 we received our first CNG bus. We now have 18 CNG buses • In 2013 we opened a Compressed Natural Gas fueling station, including a public area. • In 2016 we began using Trade and Transit

Centre II. The mission statement of River Valley Transit states its goal is: “To meet mobility needs, enhance the quality of life, and support economic development and environmental goals by providing high-quality public transit service, managing and coordinating a range of other related services, and promoting transit-friendly development in Williamsport and North - Central Pennsylvania.” RVT has also served as an engine for economic development for Williamsport and the surrounding area, acting as a partner on various economic development-related projects including, most recently the Gateway Project, near Lycoming College and location of a Kohl’s department store in downtown Williamsport. RVT also operates the Peter Herdic Transportation Museum to the rear of the Thomas Taber Museum. It helps to celebrate our transportation heritage. RVT also operated the Hiawatha Riverboat Paddlewheeler at Susquehanna State Park. Bill Nichols Jr. has been manager of River Valley Transit since 1978 and said he is very proud of what RVT has been able to accomplish through all those years and points with particular pride to how it has it has expanded regionally into such places as Jersey Shore, Lock Haven, and Muncy and how they have embraced the new technology in such ways as radio-equipped busses as well as busses fueled by compressed natural gas. He said that RVT presently has a fleet of 33 busses, 18 of which are fueled by CNG and there are three trolleys, which are used in a variety of ways, particularly in connection with tourism.

According to Nichols, in 2018, RVT buses traveled more than 850,000 miles and provided more than 100,000 trips. He expressed his pride as to RVT’s accomplishments stating, “I am pleased to tell you that 2018 was an outstanding year for River Valley Transit in all respects. Total ridership on our system totaled more than 1.3 million passenger trips, spurred in part by a 4.5 percent increase in senior citizen riders along with a 20 percent increase in trips made by passengers with disabilities requiring the deployment of wheelchair lifts or ramps. Thus, RVT continues to be a critical resource for meeting mobility needs in the City of Williamsport and surrounding areas.” He continued, “Furthermore, our passengers are happy with the services we provide. In November of 2018, we conducted an onboard self-administered sample survey of 408 riders. The summary results showed 71 percent indicating that they were very satisfied and 29 percent indicating that they were satisfied with the overall service they received from RVT; no respondents indicated that they were dissatisfied with the service in any respect. Within this very narrow band of responses, the highest ratings were given regarding safe and competent bus drivers, helpfulness of employees, and driver courtesy and helpfulness. These superlative ratings give testament to the great customer service that is provided to our riders by our drivers and support staff every day.” It appears that as RVT moves forward into the future, they have a bright future of service and innovation for their riders, which includes people like me.

“WHY DO WE HAVE FUNERAL SERVICES”

Honoring a loved one’s life through a thoughtfully planned funeral service provides a meaningful experience for family and friends. Special tributes, such as a time of sharing memories, and a table of memorabilia give an opportunity for others to reflect on the life being celebrated. Funeral services are beneficial to the loved ones left behind, as others are able to pay respects and offer support, two components instrumental for the grief journey and healing process. A funeral service helps death become a reality, but it is ultimately a testimony of a life well lived.

P

lans for the construction of a new independently owned super market at the southwest corner of Hepburn Street and Park Avenue have been announced by the owner for Curchoe’s Market, 610 Hepburn Street. The new site will be across the street from the present location. Demolition of properties presently occupying the present area will begin within the next 30 days. Associated in the venture are Ernest, Lawrence and Eugene Curchoe, brother who have been in the market for some years. Natives of Williamsport, the brothers began their first business in 1935 at 603 Hepburn Street. After occupying that location for several years, they built the story they now occupy. They said they are embarking on the new venture because they have confidence

in the future of Williamsport. Buildings now on the site where the market will be constructed are the Breyer Ice Cream Company, Standard Drug Company and Hurr’s Dairy Store. There also is a vacant storeroom and a two-family house on the Park Avenue side of the plot. The home will be the first building razed in the project. Plans for the new market call for a modern store in every respect, with a parking lot, which will accommodate 100 cars. The building itself will be 75 feet by 110 feet and will give five times as much selling space as the current market occupies. A complete line of food will be offered including meats, groceries and produce. Construction is expected to be completed early next year. The new market is being financed through the sale of stock certificates in the enterprise.

T

he year was 1790, and George Washington had barely been sworn in as president Congress authorized complying with Article 1, Section 2 of the U.S. Constitution, which required the federal government to conduct a census of the country, and continue to do so every ten years. On August 2, 1790, the country had its first Census Day, with the count coming in around 3.9 million people, not counting Na-

tive Americans and slaves counted as three-fifths of a person. (Check out Article 1, Section 2, Clause 3 of the original US Constitution for that piece of gerrymandering of the American populace). This will be the 24th time the United States will undertake to count its inhabitants, and the stakes have never been higher. The 2020 population numbers will shape how political power and federal tax dollars are shared in the U.S over the next 10 years. The number of congressional seats and

Electoral College votes each state gets are determined by census numbers. They also guide how an estimated $880 billion a year in federal funding is distributed for schools, roads and other public services in local communities. The demographic data is used for a host of purposes, for example developers use it to determine where to build new supermarkets and by emergency responders to locate injured people after natural disasters. Michael Burger, 20202 Census Partnership Specialist for several counties in our region, spoke at the County Commissioners Meeting on July 18th relating this information, and to begin to gather support for this upcoming event. It will begin in February of next year with an institutional count, held at Penn College and Lycoming College. This will then be followed by a postcard sent to all residents that the census is coming. The bulk mailing will be sometime around the second or third week in March. This will contain directions on how to respond to the census. For the first time, there will also be a telephone and internet option as well as mailing back the census that comes in the mail. April 1st (no kidding) is the official Census Day. Why should every person in Lycoming County be very, very concerned about this census? Consider

how much money is impacted by census numbers — $880 BILLION A YEAR! The importance of insuring an accurate count cannot be overemphasized. For every person that is missed, it would cost the county $2000 per person in missed federal revenue. The last census in Bradford County missed 4000 people and they had to carry that loss for ten years. In past censuses, Lycoming County has had a high rate of non-response on mailbacks, 23.9%, compared to neighboring counties that average about 14%. For all those non-responders, census-workers will have to go knock on the door and personally get the information. So help your county — answer the questions, get that form filled out, and send it in. A lot depends on it. [Note: Those interested in serving as a part-time census taker in 2020 should go to the Census website: www.2020census.gov.]

This level of outfit matching is ideal for professional pictures, or any occasion when you want your brood to look their best. Is that company cookout at the boss’s house? Is your church a bit more formal? Going to a familyfriendly wedding? Obviously super formal events call for dressier fare, but for those casual, but not flip-flop casual occasions, this mid-level matching makes an impact without being too onthe-nose. If you are ready to go all thrusters blasting with full-length outfits for the entire family, check out sites like Pop Real and Pat Pat. These online retailers sell completely coordinated ensembles rendered in the same print and material for Mom, Dad, tweens, toddlers, and even Grandma. The offerings here aren’t so much stylish, but more so tongue-in-cheek, like flamingo printed bathing suits, or shirts labeling Dad as “king” Mom as “queen” etc. These are fun novelty items for silly photos, for vacations, and for holidays. Of course, don’t feel you have to buy what is presented as family collections. You can always build your own matching outfits from either yours or your children’s existing wardrobe. There are so many fun prints for kids’ clothes, from pineapples to dinosaurs, and luckily more and more adult pieces are available in this milieu. ModCloth has a ton of whimsical pieces, mostly for women, but some for men, that you

This Week’s LION Kaleb Daniels – Intern Extraordinaire By Larry Stout

T

Last week, I was pleasantly surprised to find the doors unlocked, the lights on, and all the chairs turned in the right direction. Kaleb was on the job. But unlike Asok, Kaleb knows he has ideas that should be heard. Evidence of this can be found in this week’s County Hall Corner, which featured Michael Burger, 20202 Census Partnership Specialist for Lycoming County. Kaleb heard Mr. Burger at a community meeting and arranged for him to make a presentation at the July 18th Commissioners Meeting. This is not an intern that sits around waiting to be told what to do — he finds what needs to be done, and makes it happen. Kaleb Daniels is a Williamsport native who just graduated two months ago from Loyalsock Area High School. He is going to Lycoming College to major in Political Science. He has a huge head start. Since 2016, he has been highly involved in political activity. His essay on the presidential race was published in the Williamsport Sun-Gazette and Lock Haven

he comic strip “Dilbert” mocks the contemporary business office. There is a character by the name of Asok, who is a brilliant young intern whose wisdom is not appreciated, and thus ends up doing the most menial of tasks. (Example: “Hey, my staple remover is broken. Somebody toss that intern to me.”) Scott Adams, the artist of this comic strip, makes a powerful statement about the corporate mindset, that despite Asok’s high IQ and exceptional ideas, he is not appreciated and even disparaged simply because he is an intern. Kaleb Daniels, the current intern for the Lycoming County Commissioners, shows many evidences as being as smart as the fictional Asok, yet does not mind doing the grunt work. To give one example, I like to arrive early for Commissioners meetings, and almost always must wait patiently along with other county officials for the conference room doors to open.

Ronald Reagan, “When you can’t make them see the light, make them feel the heat.” As a professor who has studied and written about leadership at depth, I believe this is definitely a young man to keep an eye on. Several county officials have noted that Kaleb Daniels is the best intern they have ever seen. Congressman Fred Keller is already talking to Kaleb about his future after college. Coming back to the Dilbert comic strip, its creator Scott Adams, predicted a Trump victory as early as 2015. So you read it here first — don’t be surprised if you see “Kaleb Daniels for President in 2036.”

Express. He is currently exploring running for an open position in the Loyalsock precinct for the Lycoming County Republican Party. He had to lobby very hard to get the county intern position, and keep in mind, this man right now is just 18 years old! Kaleb felt that 2016 was his turning point. Like many his age, he felt drawn to Bernie Sanders because he was promising free college to all, and for a young man preparing for higher education, this had immense appeal. But, he felt himself drawn, almost against his will, toward Donald Trump. He heard Trump called a “racist” (yes, even back in 2016), but when he examined the man’s record, he could not find any pattern of racism. At the same time, Kaleb was immersing himself in American democracy, studying the Constitution and the Federalist Papers. More and more it seemed to him that his friends and even teachers were substituting labeling for debating. Their logic of identity politics establishes that there can be no good-faith arguments. Rather than be cowered into silence, Kaleb Daniels decided to stand up and be counted. His favorite quote is from

Gotta Love That Crock-Pot

W

e all know we just had a week where the heat was unbearable. Days like that, the last thing you think about is cooking. This is why I love my Crock-Pots! I tend to associate them to the winter months, when it’s cold and I have a nice hot stew or soup ready to go for dinner. It makes the house extra cozy and smells so nice. But, in the summer when I do not feel like firing up my ovens, there is tons of summer friendly recipes to do in a Crock-Pot. Like right now, I

www.webbweekly.com

have homemade pork BBQ in mine for dinner! Let it do all the work and your house stays as cool as a cucumber! It’s perfect. Irving Nachumsohn, the man who invented slow cookers in the 1940s was a blessing to all. He deserved some kind of an award or somethin’. Wish I could give him a big ol’ smooch and thank him! What a God send CrockPots are to many of us! Busy days, hot days, or cozy fall nights, it’s always there when we need it. Now, I love crock pot recipes when there

isn’t much prep. Just chop up an onion, add a can a soup, or something small the recipe requests. Wham bam thank you mam’, dinner is served and it tastes good! I mean come one, I LOVE to cook, but we all have those days where you Andrea McElroy are just like “Dang, can’t dinner just make itself tonight!?” These kind of recipes are awesome to have, like Crock-Pot Cheesy Chicken Casserole! But my all time, top favorite Crock-Pot meal ever is lasagna.

LUNCH BUFFET

HELLER’S

Yes, I said lasagna! You don’t even have to cook the noodles! This recipe is nice because you can do some of the prep ahead of time! I’m all about easy prep and being organized. Cook the meat a day ahead if you want, let it sit and cook in your sauce for more flavor. Mix up the cheese mixture and place it in the refrigerator until ready to use , then all that is left is building your lasagna into your crock pot. And let me just tell you, folks that say to me that they arent big lasagna fans and try mine, they became lasagna fans! It’s just so darn good! Go ahead and try it for yourself and keep

CROCK POT your house cool as a cucumber, too!

Scatter chopped onion over top. Spoon cream soup over top of that. Cover and cook on low 7-8 hours or on high 3-4 hours. A few minutes before serving, add in cooked rice, corn, and cheese. Stir to combine. Serve hot. NOW OPEN YEAR ROUND!

• 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided • 1/2 cup grated parmesan cheese, divided • 1 egg • 2 tbsp. Italian seasoning(optional) • 1 teaspoon pepper • lasagna noodles, uncooked • pepperoni (also optional) • salt, to taste Brown ground beef and onion in a large skillet. (You’re going to be adding the sauce and water to it after the meat is cooked) Then add garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes. Drain excess grease from beef. And put back into skillet. Pour in spaghetti sauce and water. Stir well and taste to see if you need more seasoning. Let simmer to get all those flavors through the meat. In a separate bowl, mix together cottage cheese, 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, 2 tbsp. parmesan cheese, egg, pepper and chopped parsley. (Put your remaining cheeses back in the fridge, you’ll be using those after your lasagna is cooked.)

Spray Crock Pot with non-stick cooking spray. Scoop approximately 1 cup of meat sauce into bottom of slow cooker. Top with one layer of uncooked lasagna noodles. Just do your best to break them up to fit into your crock pot. Then place pepperonis on your noodles. Next top with a layer of cheese mixture. Keep adding layers, ending with meat sauce. (I put a few pepperonis on the top as well!) Put the lid on and cook on low for 4-6 hours. (It took exactly 4 hours in my Crock-Pot. DON’T OVER COOK!) You want most of the liquid to be absorbed and noodles should be soft. Put a knife through the noodles to see if they are soft. When it is finished cooking, add remaining cheeses. Put the lid back on for about 10 more minutes until cheese is melted. Slice and serve it up with a crisp salad and some garlic bread.

otorized farm machinery has been an aid for farmers for many years. The heritage of these machines will be celebrated again when the Loyalsock Valley Antique Farm Machinery Association holds its annual show this weekend, August 1, 2, 3 and 4. For one weekend every year, the valley goes back in time to share the knowledge of the past and how equipment has evolved from horses to tractors and from steam to gas. This is the 32nd year for the Annual Loyalsock Valley Antique Machinery Association tractor show that is always the first weekend in August. The featured Tractor this year is Caterpillar, and all track equipment, Sears garden tractors and attachments, and all Pennsylvania built engines. The event will again be held at the Consolidated Sportsman grounds on

Rt. 87 in Loyalsockville. This year, along with all the flea markets, food vendors, live entertainment, garden tractor pulls, big tractor pulls, parade of equipment and the always favorite lumberjack event where men and women compete in ax throwing, log rolling, hot chainsaws and more they also will be having a working drag saw, lumber mill, and shingle mill that makes logs into lumber then goes into a planer for the finished product. The drag saw cuts the logs to length to go in the shingle mill and cuts the shingles, then they burn their logo into the shingle and sell them to the public. Also this year they will be having an in-depth discussion by Kyle Fowler on “Abandoned Coal Mines of Pennsylvania.” It is a detailed discussion about the tools and techniques used to mine coal in Pennsylvania through the ages. Times for the discussion will be announced

at the show. The President of the club Bill MacInnis told Webb Weekly that this is a very educational show, especially for the younger generation. A lot of the members are getting older, and we need the younger generation to take an interest and volunteer some time or join the club to keep it going, or it will become a thing of the past. The first weekend in August is going to be bigger, better, and more exciting than last year. Please come out and share their history and help preserve the past. Admission price is $5 daily

for an elusive product is discovering that its manufacturer recently decided to change the packaging, making the mission to find said product almost impossible. The only way to circumvent choosing the wrong item is to physically bring all interested parties to the store, which is often met with audible groans of disapproval. At least they can then be responsible for picking out the wrong product themselves and refrain from blaming someone else. One way we’ve found to alleviate such incidents, however, is to turn to our dear cell phones, once again — this time employing the camera function to great benefit. Whenever someone in our family requests a grocery item with RIDICULOUS SPECIFICITY, he or she simply takes a picture of the packaging TO INCLUDE ALL NECESSARY DESCRIPTORS and then texts it to the individual planning to visit the grocery store next, which is usually my husband. For some unknown reason, he seems to draw the short straw when it comes to running errands. In that way (at least in theory), there can be no misinterpretation or confusion about what to buy. Thus far, this system has served us well, except when it doesn’t. Perhaps more frustrating than having to search the aisles

for Furev g n i k LooMEET PHYLLIS & RENEE! er

Gorgeous is one word to describe Phyllis. Catitude is another. Phyllis came in through an investigation. She is around four years old and has very cute brown smudges near her nose. She is looking for a quiet household where she can be the only cat (other cats stress her). This lovely gal would love to meet you in Pen 11 of our cat room.

We continue to have a lot of rabbits at the shelter. Here, we would like to introduce you to Renee. Renee loves pellets and comes hopping when the romaine bag is rattled. She is litterbox-trained. Her favorite hobby is sitting on a chair, facing an open window and letting the wind ruffle her fur.

also benefit most other species that already inhabit the area. Fund-raising banquets are held throughout the state and all across the US to raise needed dollars for conservation. Some of the monies are used at a national level for the various outreach programs, but dollars also come back to the local level for dedicated programs including habitat improvement. Equipment usage and material purchases, such as the required amounts of lime, fertilizer and seeds for food plots are funded by the monies raised through the banquet system. The hunters who are members of these various organizations also devote their time and energy as the dedicated volunteers who work to create the cover areas, plant the food plots and add a variety of seedlings and shrubs to enhance the existing habitat.

a hunting season to maintain the herd size at a sustainable level. The wild turkey and the elk are both great examples of how the efforts of hunters now provide the opportunity for everyone to enjoy seeing and studying these great creatures. The general public needs to be aware that for most hunters, it is just not the taking of game that is the most important consideration; it is doing the work that is necessary to protect and conserve all wildlife for future generations to enjoy that is critical. Just as we truly need to thank a veteran for all of the freedoms that we enjoy in this great and unique country of ours, we also need to thank a hunter for the rich abundance of wildlife that we enjoy! Responsible and ethical hunters should hold their heads high!

A great number of non-hunters really are just not aware of how much work hunters accomplish in the name of conservation. It is this work that ultimately benefits not just all wildlife, but also benefits all people who enjoy the wildlife. It has not been that long ago that the wild turkeys numbers throughout the United States were in serious decline. Through the establishment of the National Wild Turkey Federation and through their work with state agencies and volunteers (usually hunters), those dwindling numbers of turkeys are now at a level that supports a viable hunting season in each of the 48 continental states plus Hawaii. Through the continued management efforts of the Pennsylvania Game Commission and the help of volunteers, our state herd of elk has grown to a size that now allows

species that they may prefer to pursue. There are many species-specific organizations today that focus their attention on one type of animal or bird, such as the National Wild Turkey Federation or the Quality Deer Management Association. Each of these, as well as the other similar groups, has youth oriented programs, education and safetyrelated programs, and devote a great deal of time and money to conservation efforts. In their conservation interests, conventions, conferences and seminars are held, wherein how-to information is shared regarding developing food plots and managing both woods and fields to benefit wildlife by improving both cover areas and food sources. The greatest side benefit made by each conservation group is that whatever work is done on behalf of one species will

we were ice fishing. I believe the eagles are now equating all those fishermen on the ice to some good mid-winter meals. The PGC is now asking the public to report new nest sightings with an online tool developed for smartphones and laptops. Be aware however that eagles are a protected species even though they were delisted federally under the Endangered Species Act. It is illegal to kill or posses a Bald Eagle or a Golden Eagle. Be advised that you should not approach too close to an active eagle’s nest and in fact, federal regulations prohibit any intrusion within 660 (I have no idea how they came up with that number) feet of a nest. Keep your eyes open, the eagles are among us.

I’ll claim the record until someone proves otherwise. I certainly had never done that before. Traveling the countryside, I never once saw anything resembling a baseball field. The only stadium I saw was the Stade de France in Paris. It seats 80,698, the eighth-largest stadium in Europe. It is used by the France national football team and the French rugby union team for international competitions. Despite the stadium’s size, there are no adjacent

parking lots that are commonplace here in the States. The favorite sport of the Europeans is undeniably soccer, with over 4 billion people following the game. Although during my visit I saw fewer than a half dozen outdoor basketball hoops, basketball is their second favorite with over 1 billion followers. Rugby is growing in popularity among team sports. Tennis courts are abundant, and bicycles were everywhere! I was surprised to learn that European schools do not have associated school sports teams. In France the school day is long, and children spend much time

MURRAY

sitting behind a desk reading, writing and listening. Time for sports and other extra-curricular activities during a typical school day is scarce. Imagine how that would go over in this country. The school structure is similar to ours with primary, middle, and high school distinctions – but no sports! Club teams provide sports for those interested participants. There are approximately 6,500 club teams associated with FIFA (Federation International Football Association). In 1959 Chuck Berry released a hit song ‘Back in the USA.’ For me, it is good to be back. Now, take me out to the ballgame ASAP!

of my experience. Those stories will be included in yet to be determined future editions.) As we crossed the pond and arrived in Paris (my first travels to Europe) I soon realized that the Home Run Hitting Contest and the subsequent MLB AllStar game were of little consequence. These were events I never missed on TV and on a few occasions in person. But in France, they received no mention. I couldn’t even find an English speaking channel on the TV. There was interest in the World Cup, Wimbledon, and the Tour de France, but baseball — it wasn’t even an afterthought! As my 12-day sojourn continued

ongratulations to the South Williamsport Lady Mounties as they recently punched their tickets to the Little League Softball World Series. These ladies have captured the hearts of the entire region with their outstanding play. The gals were crowned the Eastern Regional champs and are now en route to Portland, OR to compete against the world’s very best. Kudos to them, their coaches, parents, and fans. Well done kids. I’ve known their manager Cory Goodman for many years. He was a

few grades behind me in school, and we were in the same circle of friends. Cory was a standout baseballer for the Williamsport Millionaires. He then moved on to play at Mansfield U. Cory always worked hard, with a great personality and a low key demeanor. I believe these qualities helped with his transition to softball. My man also has some lovely natural hair. I reached out to Cory the night before the Eastern Regional Championship. I sent him a short note wishing him the best and asked for just a few minutes. Cory got back to me right away, and

he told me he’d touch base when he was free. Beautiful. I only needed a few quotes, and I really didn’t want to bother him. Cory and the girls were awfully busy. The past three games were on the ESPN family of networks. The gals Jamie were staying on-site in Spencer Bristol, CT, completely isolated from their parents. The setup is very similar to the Grove at Little League International. I’m not comparing it to Fort Knox, but there was limited interaction with the players and their families and fans. I totally understood that they were in high demand. Again. They were super busy, and I didn’t want to be a distraction. Then Coach’s phone rang. Six straight times. I don’t know where he was at that moment. Maybe Cory was at practice or giving another interview. I could only imagine his look when he had half a dozen missed calls. Excessive and out control pocket dials. I didn’t realize my mishap until an hour or so later and sent the following plea. “Totally my bad Coach. I didn’t mean to call you several times. My phone was in my pocket, and I was mowing the lawn. I’m so sorry — dumb user. Please give me a call when you can. Like to give you and your gals some love in the Webb Weekly.”

Cory returned my calls later that evening. We had a terrific conversation. I haven’t seen or talked to him in some while. Occasionally, we’d cross paths in town or at the Liberty Arena. So I spent the first few minutes apologizing. These awkward situations only tend to happen to a part-time freelancing scribe. “We are playing some great ball right now,” Coach explained. “We are also winning in a variety of ways. Alizabeth (Shuler) is pitching well, and the gals are playing great defense behind her. We were a tad nervous that first night, but the girls found some confidence behind the plate. We try to keep it simple and put the pressure on the other team. The girls have really bought into this concept, and they are doing an unbelievable job of putting the ball in play.” South Williamsport finished the Regional Tournament with a 4-0 record. They defeated New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Connecticut twice. South Side believes that everyone has a role, and Coach Goodman and his staff make sure that everything is focused on the common goal. Every player on the roster is just as important as the other. “The girls have been amazing all summer,” Cory continued. “They come to practice ready to work. The amount of compliments that I have received about our behavior and performances throughout the State and Regional Tournament has been overwhelming. I couldn’t ask for a better group. It’s been
