The Journey of Coach Cory and The Southside Softballers
I
t was great hearing from so many of you about last week’s article, Thirty-One Words to Live By. A special tip of my Webb Weekly cap to Mike Juran for sharing Red Skeleton’s wordby-word meaning of the Pledge of Allegiance. Please take a moment to view at webbweekly.com, or Google and watch on YouTube. It is a must-watch for every American. It or an equivalent remake should be required viewing in every school in our Nation. Maybe get a patriotic star of today to film a new version. I will soon be picking up where I left off last week, on the train wreck that is Washington. However, if Congress can take a six-week vacation, I’m going to take a break from the complete frustration of their absurdity. Besides, there’s too much good stuff going on to dwell on the negativity and division of both parties. What an amazing time of year in the West Branch Valley. When you can enjoy those most special days of summer while autumn in Penns Woods is just around the corner, I love the hot days, cooler nights, and enjoying the local harvest. There’s nothing better than that first homegrown tomato sandwich of the season. Other than maybe the next one. Just seeing the hustle and bustle at Tebb’s

as the ladies bag up all that is grown in God’s green earth, brings a smile to my face. We are so very blessed by the special folks that work the soil. That early morning fog and smell in the air tells you the boys and girls of summer will soon give way to Friday Night Lights and back to school time. The Little League World Series is a week away, and high school gridiron action begins on August 23rd. If you represent a local baseball or softball All-Star team and are still playing, it has been a season that will be remembered for a lifetime. As you’re reading this, the South Side Little League Girls of Summer are competing in Portland, Oregon. These young ladies are having one of those journeys of a lifetime. The memories, the bonds, the love for each other already forged by competition. The dream of returning home with a Little League Championship dancing in their heads. Think about that, Little Mountaineer Little League competing for a World Championship Crown. There were high expectations for these girls, competing as 9 and 10-year-old AllStars they won a state crown and made a name for themselves at the East Regional Tournament. These high expectations become a target on your back as you attempt to return to a Regional Final. Then hope-
fully punch your ticket to the World Series. Manager Cory Goodman and his coaches Chris Schuler and Josh Cox have done a fantastic job preparing the girls for this year’s journey. Coach Cory is truly one of the good guys. In Jim talking with him, he comWebb, Jr. pletely gets it. He understands the importance of “Team” and team building. He completely gets that past success is only a step toward achieving a future goal. Most importantly, he understands it’s about teaching not just a game but lessons for a lifetime. While keeping it about fun and that special time of Little League in a young person’s life. Coach shared the following with me, “As a member of a team, everybody has a role. It is their job to be prepared and execute their role whenever called upon. The girls have worked hard and been amazing all summer. They come to practice each and every day ready to work, and we practice every day. Every girl on the team has helped us get to the World Series.” Coach Cory is very proud of the fact that the girls receive compliments, not just about their great play on the field but also how they act off the field like young ladies. “I couldn’t have asked for a better group of girls, they just get it,” he stated. This all begins with the manager and coaches. Rule number one of any coach-
ing handbook is, always behave like a lady or gentleman. The team’s motto is “Focus every pitch, Win every inning, Keep the pedal down.” Then sounding off with, “What side?? Southside!!” You do these things — you are going to win a lot of ball games at any level. The key to reaching a World Series is having your team prepared to focus on every pitch, to understand how to win every inning, and then finish off your opponent. It takes years of dedication and hard work to teach and develop talent capable of reaching a World Series. This just isn’t taught in a few practices at All-Star time. This has been instilled in this “Team,” probably beginning when the girls first started playing at a young age. Coach Cory would like to thank everyone that has helped get the “Team” to the World Series. “There are way too many people that have helped out to thank everyone individually. The coaches, the team, as well as the parents, have really stepped up and helped out wherever needed. The local community has gotten behind the team in every way to support us. Thank you to everyone.” Tip of my Phillies MLB Little League Classic cap to you, Coach! I would share a dugout with you and your staff any day. Best of luck and safe travels to your “Team”! And yes, you need a little luck to reach a World Series. There are always a few times the ball just has to bounce your way during the journey. God Bless America.

Reckless Abandon

I
recently saw a post on Facebook that said, “Be kind with reckless abandon.” It was in reference to someone helping to pay for a strangers groceries and the cashier saying that they probably got scammed. The person who paid said something to the effect of it not mattering because even if they did their help came from a good place, and worst case they are out a few bucks and best case they helped a family have dinner tonight. I really appreciated the sentiment of being kind with reckless abandon. There are so many people spewing hate and vitriol in the world today that I think we could all do with a little more kindness in our domains. I’ve said it before; the anonymity of the internet in general makes it easy to forget that there are real people out there with real feelings, fighting real battles and struggling daily. There is no need to add to that by being callous and mean to those you somehow feel are lesser than you. You never really know for sure the impact your words and actions can have on people. You never know when that nerve you choose to needle may be the nerve that breaks someone down.
You also never know when your nice actions, that support someone and raise him or her up, may be the action that saves Steph their life. Nordstrom I’ve never been a fan of the ‘sticks and stones’ adage. As a matter of fact, I think that it’s pretty much bull-- well you know what… Words hurt. And I’m sorry that I’m about to quote Cher, but, “words are like weapons, they wound sometimes.” Words damage. And words leave a lasting impression. So maybe it’s time to start thinking of ways we can be kinder to those around us. Helping a stranger with groceries is fantastic, but we could certainly do with a lot more kindness on the most basic level. Maybe you choose to ignore a political opinion that is different than yours instead of trying to berate that person into thinking your way. [Side note: that really doesn’t work anyway.] Or maybe you choose to let someone in front of you at the store. Or, compliment the first three people
you talk to today. Or, send a positive text message to five different people right now. Or, instead of complaining about unreturned carts, just simply return them. Or, while you’re out, compliment a parent on how well-behaved their child is. Or, don’t write the angry internet comment you’re thinking of writing. Or, when everyone around you is gossiping about someone, be the one to butt in with something nice. Or, at the very least, tell them to stop talking trash about people. There are a lot of ways to just be nice to the people around you. And you’ll be surprised at how much better it makes you feel. If you feel better, it’s easier to be nicer and a super awesome cycle of niceness follows. And you know what? Maybe while you are out doing nice things, not everyone will appreciate it. Maybe someone will try and discourage you because there isn’t a payout. But do it anyway. Be Kind. With RECKLESS ABANDON. Because at the end of the day, what do you have to lose? And you know what else? I’m not that sorry about quoting Cher. ‘If I Could Turn Back Time’ is as fire now as it was in 1989 and you’ll never convince me otherwise.

he old cliché “everybody loves a parade” was never more evident than when the newly crowned Little League Softball Eastern Regional Champions received a community hero’s welcome as they triumphantly made their way through the streets of South Williamsport and Duboistown. Parades are nothing new to them as the annual South Williamsport Mummers’ parade traverses a similar route, and they have waved from the sidewalks as the Grand Slam parade signals the beginning of the Little League World Series every August. But this parade was different. It was being held for them. The smiling faces and arm-waving enthusiasm of team members and coaches were infectious as the team of twelve 11&12-year-olds basked in the aftermath of their accomplishment of winning the Little Mountaineer Little League’s first-ever regional
championship and a trip to the Little League Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon. The South LL softball contingent departed for Portland on Monday and will play the opening game of the Little League Softball World Series August 7 against the Asia-Pacific champions. Their opponents from Bacolod City, Philippines ran roughshod through their regional tournament compiling a 5-0 record and outscoring their opponents 82-5. Undeterred, the youthful South softballers carry an unblemished record in their march to the World Series after having successfully made their way through District, Section, State, and Regional Tournaments in undefeated fashion. The team is comprised of players Mikaiya Hills, Kendall Cardone, Lily Reidy, Gianna Goodman, Alizabeth Schuler, Chelsey Harrison, Sage Lorson, Abby Lorson, Lynna Clark, Lacey Kriebel, Lili Cox, and Emily Holtzapple. was one of those back to the future moments for the tournament’s director Corey Wright. Now serving as Little League Baseball’s Eastern Regional Director, Wright’s own Little League beginnings came in his hometown of South Williamsport playing for the Little Mountaineer Little League. “It was amazing to have a team from the same Little League I played in as a youngster come here to this tournament,” Wright chuckled. “With the many teams that play Little League Baseball and Softball, to get

team’s manager assisted by coaches Chris Schuler and Josh Cox. Goodman has been involved in coaching the majority of the girls for five years since they were eight years old. When asked when it began to sink in this team was capable of some really special accomplishments he reflected back to the state tournament. “I think when we were at the state tournament and experienced that level of competition and were able to come away with the championship, it started to sink in,” Goodman said. “Once we won and went to Bristol for the Eastern Regional tournament I figured that if we played well we would be able to compete with anyone we faced and so far that has been the case. Now the big prize awaits us in Oregon. “We’ve really preached teamwork since we brought the girls together for our first practice. Alizabeth Schuler has been lights out on the mound; there is no questions about that. But when we come ready to play and make the plays behind her, it is almost like we are unstoppable.” With a twist of irony the team’s participation in the Eastern Regional Tournament in Bristol, Connecticut

to a regional tournament is a huge accomplishment in itself. Then to win the Eastern Regional Tournament is even more astonishing. Then for a team from your own hometown to do it created a lot of personal pride for me. “The Little Mountaineer Little League was where I played, where my dad coached, and mom worked in the concession stand. That familiarity of it all that came here to Bristol brought it all home for me. That’s what I felt when I saw some of the many faces that I knew experiencing this wonderful moment for everyone involved from back home. “I always saw that as the Eastern Regional Director, I have two jobs. One is to keep everybody safe. The other is to provide everyone with the experience of a lifetime. Whether they are to go on to Portland or to return back home, I want them to look at Bristol and the Regional and say ‘boy that was the best summer and tournament that I’ve ever been a part of.’ “It is hard for parents and fans to
get here when the tournament is held during the week, but South brought a great crowd here. When I walked out on the field, I heard folks calling my name. Seeing those folks and the conversations we shared during the week made this tournament a bit different from all those other tournaments we’ve hosted. “The parents understood the pressure that is on the kids. Because of the Little League series in South Williamsport every summer, they know what awaits the winner at the end. But I think they really understood what it is all about. It is a game being played. Someone is going to win, and someone is going to lose, but it was truly a real pleasure having both South Williamsport and Connecticut playing in that championship game. “It was a bit surreal for me,” Wright concluded. With that hurdle cleared, Goodman and his team have spent the past week preparing for that one last obstacle that awaits them.

“The day of the parade was a day off for us but last Saturday we got back to our practice routine and tried to keep things as normal as possible,” Goodman explained. “We’ve had requests from various news outlets that they wanted to come to practice and we did everything we could to accommodate those requests. We understand and are grateful for the interest being shown to our team, but we needed to adhere to our normal routine as much as possible so that we can hit the ground running when we get out to Oregon. “The community has been absolutely amazing. I said that to everyone who has asked me the same question. The amount of support from friends, family, parents, businesses, not only in South Williamsport but businesses from throughout the entire county have stepped up to help us out. The girls have done all the work to achieve what we have so far, but all the support we have received has been so much appreciated to make this entire journey go as smoothly as it possibly can.” Well aware his team will be playing
in the first game of the Softball World Series, Goodman sees that as a plus. “Playing first — I don’t think that will make much difference to us. At these tournaments, the more you sit around, the more your nerves build up, especially for 11 & 12-year-old girls. So I think just getting out there and getting after it will help us out.” As for what will it be like in Oregon, Goodman sees some similarity to his hometown. “Being from here, it will be softball paradise. It will be fun for the girls to experience out there what they see here in their hometown every third week of August when teams from all over the world come to South Williamsport for the Little League Baseball World Series. Now, we will be one of those teams coming from around the country and the globe to play for a World championship in someone else’s backyard. That will be truly special.” Indeed it will be. We will all be watching and rooting for the South Little League softball team to make Little League history in their own historic Little League community.

am very excited to announce that I will be bringing my love of writing (and my twisted sense of humor) to Webb Weekly in the form of my new column, ‘Living Well.’ This column will cover topics such as health, lifestyle, family, and whatever else I am in the mood to write about. Living Well will not necessarily be about getting runwaymodel thin or jacking your biceps for the cover of Muscle & Fitness — though if that is what you are into that is certainly OK. Our time here on earth is very brief, and therefore should be lived with zeal, energy, and immense joy. I want you to be the best version of yourself and to have an abundant life. Thus, I will do my best to bring you articles that will enlighten as well as entertain you. A little about myself: I hold a bachelor’s degree in Health Science, a master’s degree in Exercise Science, and two fitness certifications. I have been in the fitness and wellness fields for well over two decades, where I have managed or owned fitness facilities, and have been a personal trainer. I am currently working full-time in wellness for a regional health system, and personal training part-time, as I still love the individual interaction after all of this time. I also have a background in
competitive powerlifting, though I have been retired for quite some time. I have always loved writing and, much to my high school teachers’ exasperation, would write stories about characters I would create. This would be OK in English class — except I was in Physics. In addition to writing, I enjoy spending time with my wife and five children, lifting weights, craft beer, and eating really good hamburgers. So, expect articles on those topics as well. As you will see, I will often try — and sometimes fail — to interject humor into my articles. At least I think it’s humor. In addition to the many articles I have written over the years, I have written two books on strength training, Kettlebell Training for Athletes and Kettlebell Training for Strength and Power, that are both for sale on Amazon (shameless plug). I also have a passion for writing fiction and will keep you posted on anything I have coming out. Last, I welcome questions though I am not a doctor, so send medical inquiries to your family physician. If you do have a general fitness or wellness question, feel free to send me a message. I can be reached at dbfitnesslab@gmail.com. I look forward to writing for you, and I hope you have as much fun reading my articles as I have writing them. Yours in health.

“I have been to several other hearing aid places over the years. I highly recommended Artisan Hearing Technologies. Their customer service is the best and their hearing aids are exceptional. I am overwhelmed with my hearing with my new hearing aids. It has made a tremendous difference in my life. I have had many hearing aids in the past, I even paid $7,000 for hearing aids and they can not compare to my new hearing aids.” ~ Rick Frankhouser

n appearance by Hall of Fame pitching great, Randy Johnson highlights the Grand Slam Parade slated for August 14. The Lycoming County Visitors Bureau is encouraging the community to come out as we welcome the 16 Little League World Series teams and their families here for the 73rd Little League World Series to Williamsport with the 15th Annual Grand Slam Parade. Activities in the downtown involving the parade festivities will begin at 4:00 p.m. with the parade stepping off at 5:30 p.m. The parade will also be broadcast live on WBRE TV-28, the local NBC affiliate. WBRE will be set-up in various locations along the parade route. UPMC Susquehanna has continued its support of the parade as this year’s official health care sponsor for the Grand Slam Parade. They will be working with the parade planners in helping to address all health needs that may arrive to those participating in this year’s event. There will once again be a collectible parade pin. The pin will be of the 2019 parade logo with the parade pin spon-
sor’s logo incorporated onto it. Pepsi Bottling Company of Williamsport has come forward for the eighth straight year as pin sponsor. A limited number of pins will be available. As with last year, they will be available at various businesses the Thursday after the parade. They will also be available at local Weis Markets. Wegmans is stepping forward once again in their support of the parade with help to cover the costs for bringing the local high school bands to the parade. This year all eight high school bands from Lycoming County will be in it along with bands from Sullivan County and Central Mountain. The nine floats that will be carrying the 16 team participants and umpires will also be completely decorated. This year’s planning committee has once again contracted with Datman Entertainment of Williamsport to design and decorate the floats. The parade route begins at the intersection of Susquehanna and West Fourth Streets and proceeds east through the historic district and finishes in downtown Williamsport and the intersection of Market and West Fourth Streets.

Here is the background of this year’s Parade Grand Marshal, Randy Johnson. Johnson played 22 seasons in Major League Baseball, from 1988 to 2009, for six teams. He played primarily for the Seattle Mariners and Arizona Diamondbacks. His 303 career victories rank as the fifth-most by a left-hander in MLB history, while his 4,875 strikeouts place him second all-time behind Nolan Ryan and are the most by a lefthander. He holds five of the seven highest single-season strikeout totals by a left-hander in modern history. Johnson won the Cy Young Award five times, second only to Roger Clemens’ seven, and he is one of only two pitchers (the other being Greg Maddux) to win the award in four consecutive seasons (1999–2002). In 1999, he joined Pedro Martínez and Gaylord Perry in the rare feat of winning the award in both the American and National Leagues (a feat since accomplished by Clemens, Roy Halladay, and Max Scherzer). He is also one of five pitchers to pitch no-hitters in both leagues. On May 18, 2004, at the age of forty, Johnson became the oldest pitcher in major league history to throw a perfect game and is one of seven pitchers who have thrown both a perfect game and a no-hitter
in their careers. He is also one of eighteen pitchers in history to record a win against all 30 MLB franchises. On May 8, 2001, Johnson achieved the feat of striking out 20 batters in one game, doing so against the Reds. The Liberty Group is sponsoring his appearance in the parade. The sponsors who help underwrite in bringing this event to the community are Official Health Care Sponsor: UPMC Susquehanna; Randy Johnson Hall of Fame Sponsor: Liberty Group; Parade Pin Sponsor: Pepsi Bottling of Williamsport; High School Band Sponsor: Wegmans; Float Safety Sponsors: Energy Transfer Partners and PPL; Award Sponsors: Moff and Associates, Allison Crane and Rigging, Weis Markets, Williams Energy and Panda Patriot; Entertainment Sponsors: Genetti, Muncy Bank & Trust, Highmark, ESS/ Source4Teachers, Waste Management, Chief Oil & Gas, Fish Real Estate, Riverview Bank and Comcast; Float Sponsors: Giant Food Stores, Cabot Oil & Gas, Lycoming College, Stallion, Jersey Shore State Bank, Pennsylvania General Energy, Stroehmann’s, Sun Gazette, Ciocca Dealerships, Alta, HRI, Southwestern Energy, Keystone Advertising/ Harder’s Sporting Goods, Inflection,

Parade officials state they have a great line-up of music for this year’s parade. It includes two drum corps, the White Sabers and Saints Brigade each out of New York state, Aqua String Band and Polish American String Band both from
Philadelphia, along with local favorites including the Billtown Blues and Repasz Band. There will also be many dance performers and floats to round out the parade. Note that in accordance with safety procedures to serve the safety of all participants and those spectators enjoying the parade, bags or items of any kind are not permitted to be given to the players on any of the Little League Team Floats. Also, all spectators should refrain from going into the path of the parade as it processes along the street. Bicyclists, skateboarders, and others in
the street during the time of the parade will be removed as a safety precaution for themselves and others enjoying the parade. This is being done in connection with local and state authorities to ensure an enjoyable event for all. “This event is just the start of all of the wonderful activities that will take place during the 11 days of the 73rd Little League World Series. It is great to see the hard work of all of the volunteers who help in planning this parade to those that put the time and effort in building floats and providing entertainment for the event. It truly is Williamsport and Lycoming County coming together to help in providing a high ener-
gy welcome to all of the players, coaches, families and Little League fans as they get ready for the games which start the following day. Our organization is proud to be able to provide this event to the community in helping to welcome those that are coming here to enjoy the Little League World Series.” stated Jason Fink, President/CEO of the Williamsport/Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. This year’s planning committee for the Grand Slam Parade is Carole Smith, Dwain English, Michael Seitzer, Chip Plankenhorn, Jeanette Kirkpatrick, Lou Hunsinger Sr., Lou Hunsinger Jr., Heather Reuther, Dave Frey, Sergeant Jody Miller, and Lieutenant Dave Pletz.

County Hall Corner: Moving On By Larry Stout
S
tress is caused by an event that results in an upheaval from the norm. In stress inventories, death of a spouse always tops the list, followed by other troubles such as losing a job or coming down with a serious illness. But also high on the list is moving a living habitation, which obviously grows in intensity based on how much is involved in the move. So it is safe to say that the proposed sale of the Executive Plaza building at 330 Pine Street, where a large bulk of the county’s operations are conducted, with a corresponding move of these operations across the street to the Third Street Plaza at 33 W. Third Street, has produced a considerable amount of anxiety and apprehensiveness among county employees and those who use the county’s services. Besides the normal angst that anyone who has ever moved knows about, there is the added difficulty
that the government doesn’t have the luxury of just shutting down while the move is happening. The show must go on! Obviously, this will not happen overnight, but neither is it just something that is being talked about either. The County Commissioners released an initial timetable that gets up to the real estate appraisal phase, which is due by August 23rd. Two appraisal agencies, one from Lock Haven and another from Pittsburgh, are being used to determine the value of the Executive Plaza. The actual sale will be through a broker service, and legal advertise-

Preheat oven to 350°F. Heat large skillet over medium heat. Add sausage to skillet and cook until completely cooked through. You want the outside nice and brown! Meanwhile, using a serrated knife, cut rolls in half lengthwise (without breaking them apart). Place bottom half of rolls in 7×10-inch or 9×13-inch baking dish; set tops aside. No need to grease pan. Place well drained sausage patties on top of each roll. Now, you want to start scrambling those eggs. Just add a splash of milk and a little pepper. Mix well. You want a thin layer, and I found the easiest way was to use my griddle, then cut it into squares and place it on top of the sausage.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “Things My Son Needs to Know About the World” by Fredrik Backman c.2019, Atria $24.00 / higher in Canada 193 pages
T
here are so many things you want to leave your children. Heirlooms will someday be theirs, obviously, but your gifts won’t be objects. You want to leave them reminders of you, memories to make them laugh, advice to make them think, words they’ll take to heart. You want to leave good people as your legacy, and you might start with “Things My Son Needs to Know About the World” by Fredrik Backman. As the father of a son, Backman knows that there are things that every Dad wants to tell his son. The first is that when you have a boy-child, it’s inevitable that you’ll
embarrass him at some point, either by bringing up something he did once that was enormously cute or by something you’ll wear or say or do. To you, your son will “always be the tiny oneyear-old boy standing naked in the hallway…” and he needs to understand that. He also needs to know that you did your best. Because, well, you’ll do something wrong because

should watch for the day when he realizes that he’s got too much “stuff,” and that goes double with a baby in the house. Remind him that his dad will someday be like his granddad, and forgive him for it. Tell him to listen to his mother because she’s smart; always be a gentleman, which he can do when he’s also treating a woman as an equal; and know that “words matter. Be better.” Here’s what you need to understand before going further:
if you are a fan of author Fredrik Backman’s novels and that’s what you’re expecting here, this book is a big, fat “nope.” That’s because “Things My Son Needs to Know About the World” is not a novel. However… If you can forget about wanting a fictional tale, what you’ll find instead is a sometimes-sweet, sometimes-bumbling, sometimesfunny love letter from father to son and husband to wife. Now, keep in mind that Backman is amusing but
he’s no comedian: “poop” plays way too big a part in this book, and the humor can feel forced. And yet, you know you can’t resist a story that opens its heart like this one does, to tell a tale of love, and giving in to get more of it. For parents, this’ll be a sweetly welcome respite when you need something light on the subject of childraising. If that, then “Things My Son Needs to Know About the World” is your book. If you want a novel, though, alas — leave it.

you “didn’t know,” just like every parent for centuries “didn’t know” everything there was to know. Even though you have the internet, you’re going to mess up, but you have the best intentions and isn’t that the point? A good father gives advice on the big things, but he doesn’t ignore the insignificant: like, how to act at big stores, for instance, and how to furnish your first home. He should learn about sports so he can fit in, even if he never actually plays. He

To complete any summertime ensemble, ditch your leather tote and grab a straw bag. Wicker bags are right on trend this summer, but you can also find them in second hand and thrift shops. Let’s face it, a straw handbag has a limited lifespan in the style season and now is the time to carry it with pride before it’s back to backpacks and shoulder bags. As we near the end of summer, give those summer basics one more sashay around the sartorial block and have fun mixing the fashionable with the functional in these last golden days.

of your casual looks, even that little white dress, for an athleisure take on feminine style. However, if you’re tired of maintaining your pedicure come August, skip the sandals and opt for sneakers to see out the season. Like a sports sandal, you’ll want a more athletic shoe instead of a canvas, thin-soled lace-up because it’s been a long summer and your feet need support. Luckily, there are a ton of graphic and bold sneakers to make a style statement. Again, pair them with all of the basics highlighted above.

Williamsport Hosting 102nd Pennsylvania Kiwanis Convention By Lou Hunsinger, Jr.
T
he Kiwanis Club of Williamsport will celebrate its 100th anniversary in a big way this weekend, August 8 to the 11, when they host the 102nd Annual Pennsylvania Kiwanis Club Convention. In addition, they will be celebrating the installation of Williamsport club member, Michael Haven, as Governor of the Pennsylvania Kiwanis Club, which is an affiliate of Kiwanis International. “The purpose of the convention is to educate members on all aspects of Kiwanis community service and to recognize outstanding service efforts by clubs and members. Additionally, the convention will provide motivation and conduct organizational business, which includes the election of statewide officers. Finally, we will affirm our mission to serve children,” Kevin Thomas, the organization’s Executive Director, told Webb Weekly. Approximately 300 to 400 Kiwanians and their families from across the Commonwealth will be in attendance. The theme of the convention is “Children Win When Kiwanis Serves.” The Convention will “kick-off ” on Thursday, August 8 at the Little League Complex in South Williamsport with a picnic followed by fireworks. The convention will include workshops and forums, as well as community service projects in the
Williamsport area Friday, August 9 and Saturday, August 10. The convention will close on Sunday, August 11, with a farewell breakfast and keynote speaker. “I’m sure I echo the members of the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport in saying that I’m very excited for the Pennsylvania Kiwanis District Convention to be held in Williamsport,” said Michael Haven, Convention Chairperson and Governor-Elect for the Pennsylvania District. “The Kiwanis Club of Williamsport is celebrating our 100th anniversary this year, and I am thrilled that Kiwanians from across the state will be coming to Williamsport to help us celebrate. Williamsport is a great location to host a convention with plenty for the attendees and their families to do from shopping in the city’s stores to eating in the restaurants, visiting local attractions, and simply enjoying our wonderful city.” The Kiwanis Club of Williamsport is involved in a variety of projects that include fundraising, community service, and assisting children locally and worldwide. As part of its mission to improve the world one child and one community at a time, the Kiwanis Club of Williamsport organizes a number of service opportunities throughout the year, sponsors events that improve lives, donates money, time, and physical assistance to organizations that provide lifesaving and life-improving services, and gives scholarships to promising

This Week’s LION: Steve Brady and the Covation Center By Larry Stout
A
sk many people what their perfect job would be, and they would respond to own their own business. The idea of being one’s own boss is appealing, but the reality is that simply because a person has a valuable skill or talent, it doesn’t mean they have the knowledge necessary for running their own business. Where does the entrepreneur go when they have the passion but lack the wherewithal to fulfill their dream? Or even the small business owner who appears to have the right product or service for the right market, but just cannot seem to make it all work right? Steve Brady would like to provide an answer. As a 20-year veteran and retired Lt. Colonel from the U.S. Air Force serving in the Space Command Operations, and holding a Ph.D. in Business Administration from the Smeal College at Penn State University, Dr. Brady would be more than qualified to hold a high position with many organizations or businesses. But this man also has his roots in the soil, so to speak, with many active years in 4-H and FFA, and a sincere heart for rural Pennsylvania, and did not want to sit
on top of a company but instead help others fulfill their dreams to run their own. His answer is the Covation Center, located at 217 West 4th Street in downtown Williamsport. It is easy to find as it located in the three-wall cul-de-sac featuring “Inspiration Lycoming,” the giant mural with hundreds of area and national notables. As Executive Director of the Covation Center, Steve Brady seeks ways to provide the tools and supports that all businesses, and especially small businesses, need to survive and succeed. Though it is complimentary to the Pennsylvania Small Business Development Centers, located locally at Bucknell and Lock Haven Universities, the Covation Center is more hands-on. Walk in the door and immediately visible are co-working spaces, which provide an office-style environment that is outside the home and connects with other business owners. (And at $15/ day and free coffee, the price is tough to beat.) For those that need an occasional conference room, this is also provided at a reasonable cost. But beyond the practical amenities, it is the staff assistance offered alongside that is the real springboard need-

is not just entrepreneurs, but all sorts of small business owners that find help there. They have seen a real cross-section, from startups to companies such as Schindler’s Studio in Sunbury that is 110 years old. It is wonderful to see a man of humble means make it big, but it is even more wonderful and unexpected to see a man of many accomplishments and successes commit himself to helping others. Steve Brady is just such a person, an exceptional mind combined with a wonderful heart. pproximately 50 men will start working Monday morning on the Memorial Park cleanup workrelief project, which was sanctioned yesterday by City Council after its presentation by D.I. McNeil, county manager of the work relief program. The work will be staggered among the workers during the week and is expected to be completed in time for the state American Legion convention. Approval was also given a proposed work-relief project, which will provide work for nine men on a City Hall painting job. Work on this project will also begin Monday. The two projects will constitute the first application of the Pierson “no work, no dole” Act in this county. Assignments were mailed
yesterday to those selected from the Department of Public Assistance rolls to work on the projects. Refusal to accept the work will automatically cut employables from the relief lists. Herbert H. Ertel, county DPA supervisor, said yesterday that several other projects are under consideration. Letters were mailed to eligible agencies notifying them of the availability of the Pierson Act employables and a favorable response has been received. Harry E. Kempf, director of city parks and public properties under whose department the Memorial Park job will fall, declared that consideration is being given to other city projects that may be attempted under this new program. The dismissal of three temporary typists today who have have been employed in the DPA offices was announced by Mr. Ertel.

Remembering Jack Person: Part of A Vanishing Breed of Community Leader and Philanthropist By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
W
hen a man dies, mere weeks shy of his 101st birthday, it can be said that he probably had a life well spent. That certainly is the case of John E. “Jack” Person Jr., who “shuffled off this mortal coil” last week. Jack was a part of generation tempered by a global war against fascism and, when they returned after that war, they sought to better their communities and the lives of their neighbors and friends. Jack built upon the doctrine he learned at the knee of his father John Sr. It was the view that “those to whom much is given, much is expected.” He understood that he had an obligation to give back, and to serve his community and others, and to do so while not seeking praise or adulation. Jack took that view with him and practiced it zealously when he succeeded his father as the president of the Sun-Gazette Company. According to his son Johnny, Jack viewed the Sun-Gazette newspaper as a “public trust,” and that he was entrusted with informing and serving the community and its readers in the best possible and uplifting way.

Outside the newspaper and perhaps as the result of his involvement with the paper, he took an active but quiet role in many community organizations and causes from serving on the board of the Williamsport Hospital, to serving as president of the Williamsport Foundation, serving on the Williamsport School Board, to serving as president of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce, just to name a few. He also was involved in many philanthropic activities, from heading the Lycoming United Fund to contributing generously to fund drives for things such as the building of pools, or if the School of Hope or some other charitable entity needed equipment. Countless times he would do this personally. He also put the Sun-Gazette behind these efforts and would have the newspaper generously and quietly support these worthy causes. One of the enduring contributions he made to this area was his pivotal role in keeping Little League Baseball and its World Series here in the late 1950s when the organization was considering a move to New York City. Offices were offered to Little League in Brooklyn by Walter O’Malley, owner of the recently departed Brooklyn Dodgers.

ther who faithfully, along with his beloved wife, Honey, supported their family’s various activities, such as sporting events or recitals. Jack and Honey were very loyal to friends. When I lost my dear wife, Mary, five years ago, they were wheeled into the viewing by their son Tom and his wife, Marsha. It was probably the most poignant episode of that sad night for me. Even now, I get choked up when I think about it. I think that Jack always wanted to leave his community a better place than he found it, and in this, I think he succeeded profusely. Jack worked hard to find a new location and to help line up the help from local businessmen, including the Lamade family, owners of Grit, to finance the acquisition and development of the property where the Little League complex now stands. It makes me shudder to think that if Jack and others had not acted what might have happened to Little League if it had moved out. Williamsport, instead of being the center of sports attention in August every year, would have been relegated to being a sports backwater. But he was much more than the sum of these actions. that chronicles the life of Jim Zumbo, from his youthful days in New York, through his writing career and travel adventures and his return to acceptance as one of the greatest outdoor writers and communicators of our time. Several years ago, after the annual SHOT Show in Las Vegas, I had the pleasure of spending a few days with Jim and his wife, Madonna, at their lovely log home outside of Cody, Wyoming. We hunted and fished together – well, OK, it wasn’t for big game and Alaskan salmon - we hunted for cottontail rabbits and ice fished for trout. Nonetheless,

The Roving Sportsman… Summertime Readingthe world. This is a well written presentation By Jon Pries
Performance measured in fluid oz.
Harrisburg hanging out near the Outdoor Channel booth. Take a minute to meet him and shake his big old hand. In the meanwhile, get to know him better through Zumbo – a great summer read. With Winning in Mind, by Lanny Bassham, is a must read for anyone who is involved in competitive sports of any kind. Lanny was an Olympic athlete who attended his first Olympic competition in Munich, Germany in 1972. He went there with high hopes of winning the gold, but brought back the silver medal instead. Unsatisfied with the results, he spent the next several years developing his “Mental Management System,” which he has refined and shared with thousands of athletes around the world ever since. He started by interviewing all of the gold medal winning Olympic athletes and asking them what it was
that they thought put them over the edge to become a gold medal winner. Over the last several years, as I have enjoyed the competitive shooting of trap, skeet and sporting clays, I have noticed a common thread among shooters – both when they tend to miss targets as well as when they are successful in breaking them. It is the mental aspect, which is common in all sports somewhat like “if you think positive thoughts, positive things will result.” Often, I have witnessed someone miss a target and then let it get to them and continue to miss targets because they remained focused on that first missed target. Or, all too often, in sporting clays, someone might over-analyze a target presentation and miss the clay bird because they did not let their subconscious mind take over and shoot more naturally. They “over-
thought” the target. Frequently, shooters will try to improve their results by purchasing a new gun, more elaborate equipment or additional accessories or by taking lessons – and often totally ignoring the important aspect of the mental side of their sport. Lanny Bassham has a wonderful way, through the book With Winning in Mind, as well as several DVD series, sometimes specific to skeet, trap or sporting clays and other sports, to explain the many aspects of mental management and guide the reader through the steps to develop a better mental approach to their chosen sport. His book, With Winning in Mind, is an easy-to-read introduction into Mental Management, and a great way to while away a few hours by the streamside this summer.

it was a wonderful few days of getting to know Jim and recognizing firsthand what a great outdoorsman he is. He has written numerous books on big game hunting, thousands of articles published in national magazines, particularly during his tenure as hunting editor for Outdoor Life magazine. These days, Jim continues his outdoor adventures and spends a good deal of his time with returning military veterans and wounded warriors, helping them to recognize they are appreciated and to aid them in returning to civilian life. Jim Zumbo, for all of his notoriety and recognition throughout the outdoor community, remains a humble individual. He returns to his east coast roots from time to time and you just might spot him at the annual Great American Outdoor Show in

can entice with my offerings. I’m not talking stocked trout water, but rather the lower stretches of a decent-sized stream that may offer a number of different species of fish. We have a good number of such destinations that fit the bill nicely — streams like Loyalsock Creek, Lycoming Creek, Muncy Creek, Fishing Creek, Pine Creek, Penn’s Creek, and many more. While the lower reaches of these creeks may not be stocked with trout, that doesn’t mean you can’t pick up a nice trout in these stretches once in a while. In addition, you have the option of hooking into some nice smallmouth
bass, rock bass, bluegills, catfish, and who knows, maybe even a nice walleye. I guess some of the fun of this type of fishing is that element of surprise — not knowing what’s at the business end when you finally get a strike. For this type of fishing, I like to keep my equipment in the medium to light range — an ultralight open-face spinning rod and reel with about 4-6 pound test monofilament line. I keep my lure selection a bit on the smaller size as well. Floating minnow type lures generally cover most situations well, and maybe even some inline spinners to cover some of the deeper holes. I
would never venture into this situation without a small assortment of lead head jigs and a variety of soft plastic grubs — white, brown, and black. Some crayfish imitations would also be good to take along since crayfish are usually abundant in these stretches of water. A small soft swimbait or two, and you are good to go. For this kind of fishing, I like to wet wade — old sneakers and an old pair of pants, and you’re good to go. With the hot, sultry weather we’ve been experiencing, it might be a nice way to catch fish as well as relax and cool off a bit.

I’ll have to admit, however, that every now and then I like to just back off a little, and revert back to some of my old fishing days. OK, so I don’t go back to the closed-faced reel and the worm and bobber, but I do like to simplify things and take a more general approach. What I’m talking about is maybe just heading out to a local mid-sized stream with one rod and a handful of lures, and targeting whatever I

grow.” As the undefeated South Little League girls softball team continues to harvest victories on their historic march to the Softball World Series in Portland, Oregon it’s a pretty good bet that no one associated with the team has any idea of those ‘small acorns’ planted 42 years ago that provided the very foundation that today stands as a most sturdy softball program. Those seeds of softball interest in the South Williamsport community were planted a bit from self-interest as a group of mothers having young daughters interested in playing the game. Softball was first chartered nationally by Little League Baseball, Inc. in 1974 following a lawsuit brought against the organization that up until that point had restricted participation only to boys. The following year, LLB had banned foreign teams from participating in the annual World Series. That 1975 tournament consisted of the four regional United States champions in both baseball and softball. The seeds of interest had been planted, and interest

in Little League softball began to grow. In the fall of 1976 a group of South Williamsport women spearheaded by Joan Eastlake, Donna Stutz, Cathy Finnerty, and Jean Lowery began discussions to form a softball league in the Borough. Initial conversations with Little Mountaineer Little League Scott Lowery leadership proved unsuccessful as the league’s only field, Lions Field, was heavily used leaving no time for softball play. Determined to proceed, the group contacted officials at Little League Baseball Headquarters seeking permission to use fields on the Little League complex. That request was granted, and the league opened its inaugural season playing games on what was known at the time as fields 5 & 6 bordering East Mountain Avenue at the bottom of Little League’s complex. With a place to play uniforms, equipment and sponsors had to be obtained in a relatively short time span. Once again, LLB Headquarters provided additional support. The uniforms for that first Softball World Series in 1975 were no longer being used, and an agreement was reached to outfit the newborn league in those colorful former World Series

talked-about history in the Lowery household as Roto-Rooter’s team manager Jean was selected to coach the league’s first All-Star team. Their opponent in what then was a singleelimination District tournament was the Old Lycoming League, clearly the area’s most dominant softball program. No ‘mercy rule’ existed then with the scoreboard posting a final score of Old Lycoming 26, Little Mountaineer 0. It was an unmerciful defeat, but the new league had completed its very first season. The lopsided loss did nothing to deter the league growth that would soon follow. Just as today’s softball program knows nothing of what transpired in 1977, those early softball pioneers, now grandparents and beyond, had no vision of young girls playing for a World Championship. But some of them were there cheering on these newly crowned victors as they triumphantly rode thru the streets of the community after winning the Eastern Regional championship. For many of today’s young people, history is not their favorite school subject. Knowing what took place in 1977 won’t make them better players, but an understanding of how the softball they now enjoy sprouted from those humble beginnings may plant some seeds as to how they might help future softball-playing youngsters who may someday look back on this 2019 team as ‘ancient history.’

uniforms. Sponsorship came relatively quickly, and the first four teams were formed. The teams and their managers included; Bicycle Center, Carol Stackhouse & Sandy Walters (Blue); Clements Photography, Joey Rake & Cheryl Stiber; (Orange), Flook’s Meat Market, Donna Stutz & Cathy Finnerty; (Red) and RotoRooter, Jean Lowery & Marcia Campbell (Green) became the founding sponsors for the new league. Mary Ann Churba served as the league’s first softball vicepresident. Volunteers came forward. Tasks were assigned and completed. The league’s ‘concession stand’ consisted of folding tables pulled from the trunks of cars on game nights. ‘Menus’ consisted of whatever baked goods or store-bought items mothers could provide. There was no electricity, scoreboard or public address system, but it didn’t matter — the South Side girls now had a league of their own. Softball interested youngsters were quick to respond, and the league’s first player draft resulted in a most interesting dynamic. Following the end of the first half of league play, all four teams were tied for first place with identical .500 percentages won/lost records. As the second half unfolded, Roto-Rooter pulled away from the pack and was crowned the first softball champions in Little Mountaineer Little League history. That development created some long-

of Fame Inductees The following individuals comprise the New York‐Penn League’s 2019 Hall of Fame Class: Gene Baker- A man of firsts, Baker played a significant role in the history of the New YorkPenn League and baseball in general when he broke the managerial color barrier by becoming the first African-American manager in organized baseball, when the Pittsburgh Pirates named him skipper of the Batavia club in 1961. In 1963, he became the second black coach in the major leagues following Buck O’Neill by a half -season. He can also be credited with being the first black manager in Major League Baseball when he took over for ejected Pirates manager Danny Murtaugh on September 21, 1963. First, they are all very professional, not one person made me feel upset at how my teeth were or how long it had been since I was at a dentist. This is truly a no judgement office trust me with the way I looked I would have completely understood a butt chewing from the Doctor, but he didn’t. The procedure itself was just fine I honestly don’t remember it much, but I was never in pain. Dr. Leggieri has just changed my life. No more worries about breaking teeth. Way better quality of life.

throughout organized baseball. In addition, Rogers has been an important contributor to the Staten Island community and the New YorkPenn League as a whole. Josiah Viera‐ Viera captured the hearts of baseball fans around the country during his life, but it was in the New York-Penn League, with the State College Spikes, that his impact was most directly felt. Josiah was born with Hutchinson-Guilford progeria, a rapid aging condition. His joyous spirit and enthusiasm was a source of inspiration for players, coaches, staff and fans. During his time as the Spikes’ honorary bench coach, Josiah helped propel the club to three Pinckney Division titles and New York-Penn League championships in 2014 and 2016. His presence created an unforgettable moment at the 2018 NYPL All-Star Game, held at his home field, in State College. As he made the final pitching change of the game, he left the field to a standing ovation from both teams and every fan in attendance. Late in 2018, Josiah passed away at the age of 14. While he is greatly missed by every member of the Spikes and the New York-Penn League family, Josiah’s spirit remains as a shining example of determination and perseverance in the game of baseball and the game of life. Bernie Williams‐ Williams hit .344 as a member of the 1987 Oneonta Yankees playing in 25 games before a promotion to Ft. Lauderdale. He made his Major League debut with the N.Y. Yankees on July 7, 1991 and would go on to play his entire 16 year MLB career in pinstripes. In his 16 seasons he collected 2,336 hits, 449 doubles, 287 HR and 1,257 RBI to go along with a lifetime batting average of .297. He is a four-time World Series champion and the all-time leader in postseason RBI with 80. He
