The Class of 2020 Kicks it Off

A

welcome back to school to all students, especially the Class of 2020. Growing up when I did, that almost sounds like a science fiction movie of the day. The title probably something like “Space Odyssey 2020” or maybe “Halloween 2020.” Jason’s grandson returns to terrorize high school graduates working a summer camp before they start college. They can’t call for help because there is no cell service. Back in my day, the 80s, Prince was singing his hit “1999,” which lyrics included “two thousand zero zero party over, oops, out of time.” The year 2000 was looked at as futuristic, and by naysayers as the possible end of the future. I’m sure many can remember all the hype, especially how everything involving a computer was going to crash. Good thing we all didn’t have cell phones back then, can you imagine the hysteria social media would have created? To millennials, the 2000s are just a normal timeline of their development. However, to me, those numbers still have some sort of mystical, awe of the future about them. It’s amazing how much of the technology of today was in SciFi TV shows way back when. Just think of “Star Trek” and their communicators and watches. Folks today couldn’t live without these high-tech devices, which were first seen on TV in the late 60s. I’m still waiting on the transporter room to make traveling so much easier.

I would be beamed up to Hartford, Connecticut, watch Hunter play football, then be beamed back. Total travel time, two minutes. I am definitely not cynical of millennials and the young people of today, as many are. I think it’s unbelievable what they do and how they understand all the technology around them. They truly have infinite information and opportunity at the tips of their fingers. Young folks today have more education, athletic and overall opportunities than I could have ever imagined in the mideighties. If you have the talent and put in the hard work, it doesn’t matter where you’re from; you’ll be found. The world has been made much smaller for recruiters by the technology of today. Travel opportunities not only in sports, but music, and competitions of the mind, give local kids a chance to be seen across the country. This is where our area’s young people are really cashing in. They’re putting in the extra hard work in the classroom and at whatever other interest is near and dear to them. Local kids are excelling at music, the arts, and so many things that used to be an afterthought after your high school years. Many now go to college not only to get an education but also to participate in another activity. Many receive scholarships, not only for sports but academics, music,

equestrian, bass fishing, and much more — the list goes on and on. With all the opportunity, there’s a most significant price to pay. Our young people work harder than ever running down their dreams, another 80s music reference to Tom Petty. It’s pretty much a seven-dayJim a-week proposition, with Webb, Jr. days off being far and few between. Did I mention most also work a part-time job to pay toward their future endeavors and to have some cash in their pocket? Tip of my 1980 Phillie Throwback cap to all the students of the West Branch Valley. It’s that time for my yearly public service message; school is open — drive safely. There have never been more distractions while driving. That isn’t even considering the fact of how many just flat-out bad drivers there are. Many of whom just choose to drive by their own rules. It is up to the person behind the wheel to pay special attention while driving in that school zone or traveling during bus hours. Expect the unexpected. You were young once; I’m sure you remember a time as a young pedestrian when you weren’t exactly focused on everything going on around you. However, lucky for you, the driver of the vehicle’s path you ended up in front of was. Let’s all be extra careful out there. The Pennsylvania tradition of High

School Football has already kicked off. Get out and take in the festivities — the glow of the lights, the smell of the concession stands, and perfectly lined fields. The sound of the band, the roar of the crowd, and the cracking of the pads — there’s nothing like being there in person. Please get to your local stadium and support your hometown team. If you can’t make it to the stadium or want to watch a replay we have you covered. WebbWeeklyLive.com is again the home of Friday Night Lights. Two great local Grid Iron match ups found at one site. I am honored to again be teaming up with Gary Chrisman and Cable Sports Productions. Gary and Color Analyst Babe Mayer are Hall of Fame broadcasters. They’re working towards their fourth decade of airing the best local sports has to offer. You can also view our Webb Weekly game of the week. Veteran play-by-play man, Paul Bo will be joined by former South Side Head Coach Rich Zalonis. Mark Mussina will also be joining the team when the Montoursville Warriors are taking the field. The three combine to make a great team. Don’t forget about Touchdowns and Tailgates every Wednesday at 7 p.m. Gary, Chris “Doc” Masse of the Sun-Gazette and I will be reviewing, previewing and interviewing the teams’ players and coaches. Remember all games and Touchdowns and Tailgates are archived and can be watched anytime for your viewing pleasure. God Bless America.

ell, apparently despite my best efforts to extend summer for as long as possible, summer is coming to an end and kiddos are back to school. Most kids are about half-way through the first week of school, and I hope that in addition to pencils, pens, and lunchboxes you also sent them back with the knowledge of where to get help if they need it. We live in a world where bullying runs rampant. Children these days don’t even seem to try and be discreet about it. So make sure your kids know where to go to find help if they find themselves being bullied, or see someone else being bullied. Let them know they can always come to you, or another trusted adult. Let them know that teachers, guidance counselors, and school administrators can always help too. Talking to friends can be helpful, but the adults in their lives need to be their goto for legitimate help. Most schools have developed a zerotolerance policy regarding bullying, but since we live in such a digital age, kids can be walking around with bullies in their ‘pocket.’ When a lot of us (showing my age here) were kids if we were being bullied, it

was often left at school or on the playground. Now, thanks to social media, and the interwebz, kids are constantly connected and escaping a bully Steph Nordstrom can be virtually (no pun intended) impossible. Please make sure that you are ‘friends’ with your kids on Facebook and ‘following’ them on Instagram and Twitter. Make sure you have a firm understanding of what every app on your kids’ phone is and does. Popular apps change constantly, and you owe it to yourself and your kids to keep up with what’s on-trend at the moment if it helps keep them safe and out of trouble. It’s so much easier for kids to be bullied by faceless screen names. It is also important that you have the usernames and passwords to these accounts. It may seem like an invasion of privacy, but these are social media tools — not their diaries. Checking up on their online and text messaging activities is an easy way to cut potential bullying, and other less-thanappropriate activities, off at the pass. There are a lot of apps out there that make this

easy for parents. You can now monitor a lot of your child’s phone activity straight from your phone. You are paying for your child’s phone. And they are living under your roof. Therefore you are the keeper of the gate. It only takes one bad decision to cause a world of trouble for your child, so make sure that you are paying attention to what they are doing. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. If your kid is under age 17, I highly recommend just saying no to Snapchat. I just think there is a lot of potential for bad decisions to be made on that app. If you are unfamiliar, Snapchat is an app that allows the user to send pictures and videos to other users; however, the person receiving the message can only view the pic/video for 30 seconds before the message is automatically deleted — or at least that’s the idea. The problem comes in that kids think that the pictures are gone forever — but much like anything you post online — nothing is gone forever. Thanks to screen capturing those photos and videos could come back to haunt you for a Very. Long. Time. I think that generally speaking, tween and teens lack impulse control, which makes this a particularly dangerous app. I know that this makes me a bit lame, but when it comes to kids and their safety, or even their futures, I’ll take being lame any day.

Steve Wiser A Lycoming Warrior For 50 Football Seasons By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

hen Steve Wiser set foot on the campus of Lycoming College in 1970 Richard Nixon was President of the United States, Milton Shapp was about to elected Governor of Pennsylvania, Richard J. Carey was Mayor of Williamsport, gasoline cost 36 cents per gallon, the U.S. was trying to extricate itself from the unpopular war in Vietnam and Bud Whitehill was the football coach at Lycoming College. Wiser reviewed with “Webb Weekly” those 50 seasons at Lycoming that landed him a spot in the Lycoming College Sports Hall of Fame, as well as some of his background. “My dad was a football coach and a football referee. We grew up around Penn State football and went to all of the home games. My uncle worked the gates at the Penn State. I had an older brother, and we played and competed with each other. I grew up in Port Matilda, and all we did as kids was play football and baseball. I was blessed to grow up in an area where sports was a way of life. I played junior high and just loved

the game. I was fortunate to start as a sophomore, and we won our conference championship. I also started my junior and senior year. My sophomore year, our coach was Al Wilson, who was an outstanding coach. He went on to coach at the college level, and ironically, I coached against him when he was the head coach at Delaware Valley! He offered me a job, but my place to stay was at Lycoming! My senior year of high school, I was given some opportunities to play college football, and Lycoming was one of those opportunities. I originally decided on PSU for wrestling. I felt pressured to be a Lion and changed my mind in June of my graduating year. It was one of the best decisions I made when calling Coach Whitehall to accept the scholarship to play football and wrestle for Lycoming College. In those days, you got athletic money. I wanted to do both sports, and I wanted to be part of turning a program into a winning program. I was fortunate and blessed to start all four years in both sports. The turning point in my career was when Hall of Fame Coach Girardi became the head coach my junior year. He made football fun, and

“Coach Girardi had a major impact on my coaching. The way he treated players and the care he had for all of his players. As a player and coach, you never wanted to let him down. He brought the best out of you. I learned so many lessons from him not only football but life. Coach G over the years has become a second father and best friend. His wife and family have treated me like part of the family! I must also mention Robb Curry, who I learned a lot about recruiting and sales! My wrestling coach Joe Humphreys, brother, and family influenced my being very competitive. Now Coach Clark is helping to change with the time.” Coach Girardi returns the compliment as he praised Wiser. “After Steve’s graduation in 1974, I hired him as our linebacker coach. It did not take long to promote Steve to defensive coordinator and later to assistant head coach, Girardi said. “Steve has had a major impact on the many student-athletes he has coached over the years. He has not only taught football skills; he has taught values. More importantly, he lives by those values. In our years together at Lycoming, Steve was a major part of the success of our program.” Wiser looked back on the changes he has seen in coaching and some of the

you wanted to run through a wall for him. You knew it was only a matter of time before Lycoming would become a winning program. My success was due to many teammates, family, and coaches. Coach Girardi, I believe saw the love I had for the game and offered me a coaching job as linebacker coach. My degree was in social studies and education. My family wasn’t happy about going to Lycoming. Their dream was Penn State, my mom and uncles worked there, and my wrestling coach, the legendary fisherman Joe Humphreys and my dad went to PSU. Now I was turning down an offer to go home, teach, and coach. I wanted to complete my dream of helping turn Lycoming into a winning program as a Coach. The icing on my dream was when Coach Girardi helped me get my teaching job in the Williamsport School District. An interesting note is Coach Girardi coached against me in high school. He was the head coach at Jersey Shore. I will say we did beat the Bulldogs my sophomore year, but he did get us my junior year. My third year under Coach G, he entrusted me with becoming the defensive coordinator.” Wiser speaks fondly and with great reverence for the man he considers his mentor and greatest influence, Coach Frank Girardi.

STEVE WISER highlights and also made it a special point to single out his family and others who have made his successful coaching journey possible. “I have seen a lot of changes over 50 years. The game early in my career was run and run the ball. In the 80s, passing started to become part of the game — not many formations in those early days. The 90s the run and shoot offensive — spread formations and putting the ball in the air. Today there is the Run Pass Offense and empty sets. No huddle offense. Rules I believe have changed to put more points on the board — rules to protect the players. Technology has had a major impact on the game, as well as preparation and recruiting. I have seen the 16 millimeter, 8 millimeter, DVD, and now Hudl. We would scout teams and exchanges films; now it is easier with Hudl. Scouting reports and tendencies have changed with technology. Players are different today because of many reasons. You need to be so much more than a coach on the field to be successful. The equipment, weight rooms, fields, scoreboards, and locker rooms have different looks. Coverage of the game, and the impact on social media. I can probably go on. The game has changed with the rules, social media, year-round programs,

recruiting, impacting on enrollment at small colleges, facilities, and full-time coaches.” “I have great memories of the five decades: First Middle Atlantic Conference Championship, the win over Bloomsburg University, 1985 undefeated season, the win over Hofstra in 1990 and the trip to the national championship in Florida, the major upset of Rowan in 1997 that earned us a trip again to the National Championship in Salem, Virginia, the 2003 playoff run with a win over East Texas Baptist, the championships in 2008 and 2013, and the great ranked defenses that we had! The greatest memories were the relationships with the players and parents. Coach G’s induction into the National College Football Hall of Fame.” “God has blessed me with some talents over the years and the ability to change and adjust to changing times. I have been blessed with some great players, loyal assistants, very supportive local community, college administration, Coach Girardi, and now Coach Clark has really been supportive of my efforts. My love for the game and players keep me coaching. The players and their

“THE IMPORTANCE OF YOUR LIFE’S STORIES”

A key element in any funeral or memorialization is the telling of stories. These stories create word pictures from the unique perspective of those whose lives have been touched by a loved one. When woven together, these stories create a tapestry of a life well lived. Think of all the stories that you would like to have told, of work, play, interests and above all, the people who were part of them. Preplanning your

young people. I have fun at practice. I enjoy working and learning from young coaches. My players have helped In so many ways, including technology. Wow, texting, Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram, I believe. I enjoy being around all of the college students that interact with on campus. Lycoming College has really become an international campus over the years, and I have enjoyed the friendliness of the campus. I am year to year now. I want to coach as long as I can be effective on and off the field. When I can no longer be effective or relate to young people, it will be time. Thanks to Coach Whitehill for getting me here, G for giving me a chance, Coach Clark, for trusting me to be on his staff, and the college for allowing me to do what I love. I tell young people, pick a profession that makes you pop out of bed every day. God blessed me with 32 years of teaching and 50 years at Lycoming. Any success that I have had is credited to my family, friends, students, players, assistants, college, support staff, and belief in God. I also want to be part of bringing championships to Lycoming and go out a winner!” For his players past and present and all those he has ever been associated with, Steve Wiser will always be a winner.

success on and off the field motivate me to continue coaching. The big wins happen when the players graduate and get that job. When they have success on the field. The game is about the players. The game is about wins and losses. But the wins come in many ways on and off the field. The losses are more about learning than disappointment. Wiser shared some of his coaching philosophy. “I believe having great people surrounding you, wife and family, great players with character, values, talent, and willingness to learn and work hard, supportive administration, and support staff. I believe letting the players that I coach know I care about them as a person. Letting them know I will help them in any way I can. Making them feel that they are important and can be successful, it is important to believe in them and listen to them. I have learned so much from the players over the years. I am not afraid to listen and learn from them. I have, over the years, had them evaluate me as a coach and what we need to do to get better. They help with the recruiting process. I am not afraid to change and learn from anyone. Only one thing I believe is non-negotiable is how you treat players and people! I still love coaching and being around

Hartman, 526 Louisa Street, has been awarded the Air Medal for meritorious service achievement in aerial flight. The lieutenant, 22 years of age, had served as pilot of a P-51, a single engine fighter plane, and received a medal for action on February 5 of this year, when he flew on a mission to adjust naval gunfire upon enemy positions, near Anzio, Italy. The citation with his award pointed out that despite the intense anti-aircraft fire, Lieutenant Hartman remained in the danger zone to protect

his leader until direct hits from enemy fire severely damaged his aircraft forcing him to parachute over enemy territory. Taken prisoner by the Nazis the same day and has not been heard from since June 17 when his last letter arrived, until this last week. He said he has met two other Williamsport prisoners, Lt. William Kern and Lt. Glenn Nesbitt. He said he had opportunities to read, play baseball and cook. He said that there was an opportunity to grow flowers through seeds provided by the Red Cross. Lt. Hartman graduated from Williamsport High School and the Dickinson Junior College.

or a bibliophile, it is finding an unusual limited edition book. For a philatelist, it is finding a rare stamp. For a leadership guru, it is finding a young person who not only has the potential for leadership but is already a leader! Getting elected as a class officer in high school is not based on leadership but popularity. But for a high school student to be an influence and inspiration to everyone, from young to old — that is indeed a leader. And that is why I could barely believe my ears as I met and talked with 15-year old Katelyn Taylor, a Montgomery Area High School junior who represents the dairy industry in this area as the official Dairy Maid. The position of Dairy Maid does not sound very glamorous and brings to mind sitting on a parade float dressed in a period costume and waving to the crowd. And yes, Katelyn Taylor, being quite an attractive and charming young lady, fills that role very well when asked to do so. But her real job is being a spokesperson for the dairy industry. She is a one-girl show, answering any request to speak to a group, but she also has to be judicious with her time. She explained that there are three

groups of people when it comes to dairy products. There are the “just-sayno” non-consumers who have sworn not to use dairy (to be avoided, waste of time). There are the hard-liners who love dairy (don’t need to be encouraged). And then there are the “iffys” who are on the fence. This group is where Katelyn focuses her energy. Katelyn’s presentations take her ev-

LYCO DAIRY MAID erywhere — from daycare centers to old-folks homes. At the daycare, she reads a book called “Making Pancakes” that goes backward from the kitchen to the store to the farm where the products originally came from. Katelyn reads the book and plays a game, and as a result, the children are now excited about milk products. In the senior citizen centers, Katelyn opens up by asking trivia questions, generally revolved around health (not surprisingly, a very important subject among the older generation). She uses their responses to explain how doing “three-dairy a day” can improve eyesight, bone health, and provide a more balanced diet. Katelyn takes questions not just about dairy but also the importance of fruits and vegetables. Her poise in answering these inquiries are evidence that this young lady knows what she is talking about. Leaving no stone unturned, Katelyn even went to the State Capital in Harrisburg to speak with legislators about the importance of the dairy industry to Pennsylvania and even prepared milkshakes for the senators. This was appropriate, of course, because it could both soften them up and shake them at the same time! Let me remind the reader again that

we are talking about a young lady who has just finished her sophomore year in high school! Actually, Katelyn has been preparing for this role almost since she was born. At the age of three, she was already helping out at the family farm, and at age seven, she envisioned herself representing the county as Dairy Maid. The position had been vacant for eight years, and it was Katelyn’s lobbying efforts that finally got it reinstated. Katelyn learned and practiced public speaking with 4-H. She practiced her skills in animal husbandry through the Centre County PA Junior Holstein Association. And like her other endeavors, Katelyn has excelled. Her four-person team won the state title in 2018, which also placed 2nd in the nation. In the photo, Katelyn is proudly posing with her heifer Today, which she is entering in a 4-H regional completion along with her other heifer, Tomorrow. She is not a prima donna by any stretch, but an honest-to-goodness farm girl who is passionate about the benefits of dairy products. The nuclear scientist Robert Oppenheimer once remarked that the best way to communicate an idea is to wrap it up in a person. There is no better advocate for the dairy industry anywhere than Katelyn Taylor.

yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. If we walk in the light, we have fellowship with one another — that’s good stuff! Confrontation will sometimes reveal that we are also an offender. But again, the best answer is light — so confrontation is necessary — even if doing so reveals my mistakes. Face-toface confrontation isn’t easy, but it is essential. Step one is step one. To move on to step two before completing step, one is to shoot before ready and aim. Doing so amplifies the conflict through uninformed speculation and jumping to conclusions — and it goes against the direct command of Jesus. He put it in this order for a reason. Don’t go off half-cocked; it will only make things worse. Step Two Step one doesn’t always work, though, in my experience, it works 99% of the time. On the rare occasion that it doesn’t, Jesus gives us the next step: take one or two others along so that every matter can be established by testimony. Sometimes other people have first-hand awareness of the

can be accomplished in a face-toface talk. Take note: email and text do not fit the first-person standard. And while the telephone is a better option when needed, nothing replaces face-to-face communication and the opportunity for instant clarification and feedback. Email and text do not work for conflict resolution because they lack the essential components of clarification and feedback. Without these, confrontation turns into an unending diatribe of assumptions and accusations that are often baseless. We’ve all received those kinds of long and accusatory emails. It can get very ugly. And more often than not, such awful messiness can be avoided by simply having a face-to-face conversation. This is first-person living. It’s Not Easy Confrontation is difficult, and most of us are not wired for it. But Jesus is very concerned that we are living in peace, so even though it’s hard, He commands us to do it anyway. Don’t use fear as an excuse – Jesus wants us to live in peace. Avoiding confrontation allows stuff to grow in the dark— stuff that isn’t good. The best answer is to introduce light, and that was Jesus’ intent when He commanded us to go directly to our offender. In I John 1:5-7 we read, This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him, there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him and

10 Reasons Why Fall Is A Great Time To Sell

10. Serious buyers are pressured to move before the holidays or bad weather hits the area. 09. Many sellers rush to close by September, so you’ll be competing in a much smaller market. 08. Employers who need to relocate their workers often wait for the summer market to cool. 07. There’s still plenty of time to finish off those home improvements before it gets cold outside. 06. The seasonal atmosphere makes your home feel warm and welcoming! 05. Not all buyers are looking to move before school starts. Lots of ‘empty nesters’ out there! 04. It’s still light enough outside to do evening showings and open houses are still popular. 03. Easy to add curb appeal with pumpkins, potted flowers and warm fall colors inside or out! 02. Inventory is lower since there’s a push to sell in summer… Bonus for you! Less competition. 01. Barbara Reed, Realtor at RE/MAX West Branch, will help you price your home right! RELATIONSHIPS matter and can help to bring validity to the confrontational process. Being an eyewitness is important because second-hand information is rarely useful. But when first-hand witnesses are available, having support can help to win the person over. Be cautioned: this is not about ganging up on someone. The purpose is to establish the matter by reliable testimony and to move the person toward confession, repentance, restitution, and peace. Step Three Tell it to the church? Or to the whole family? seems extreme —but if someone is unwilling to listen to the eye-witness testimony of two or three people, then something is wrong, and everyone needs to be aware so that proper boundaries can be established for protection. Healthy boundaries allow us to continue relating to a troubled person without opening ourselves to constant abuse. Is there a relationship in your life that is causing you pain? It’s probably time to get together and clear the air. Don’t skip that first step. Peace may be just a first-person conversation away.

he Williamsport Area School District has announced the launch of its new “Be Present” campaign, a school district-community call-to-action to promote the importance of being in school every day while also raising awareness against chronic absenteeism. Last fall, in the wake of an amendment to the Pennsylvania School Code on student attendance, the district joined up with the national nonprofit Attendance Works to motivate students and parents by championing

the academic and social benefits of attending school more regularly. This year, WASD is taking the local lead with its own campaign, designed according to the framework set forth by Attendance Works. The effort, with a tagline of “attend today, achieve tomorrow,” will more pervasively bring attention to the cause with a goal of mobilizing the community to promote the value of good attendance and reduce chronic absences. Nationally, an estimated 5 million to 7.5 million students are at risk academically each

school social workers, worked to develop the campaign and to secure its initial batch of partners from area businesses, nonprofits and youth agencies. The Williamsport Sun-Gazette, Webb Weekly and Lamar Advertising also have signed on as media sponsors to push out the message during national Attendance Awareness Month in September using promotional materials that display the faces of WASD students. “Too many absences not only can affect achievement but also the social and emotional growth of the student,” Poole said. “When families understand the negative effects of chronic absenteeism on realizing their hopes and dreams for their children, we can work on improving attendance in WASD.” To learn more, or for ways to get involved, go to “Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow” under “Parents & Students” at www.wasd.org.

year because they are chronically absent, defined as missing up to 10 percent or more of school days in excused and unexcused absences. During the 2018-2019 school year, about one in six WASD students missed nearly a month of school. “Every day a student is absent from school is a lost opportunity for learning,” said Dr. Richard Poole, WASD’s director of student services. “Too many parents and students do not realize that just missing two days each month can be a problem, and that often leads to falling behind in the classroom. Even fewer families realize that absenteeism is a problem as early as kindergarten, and building the habit of attendance in the early grades can influence their children’s chances of graduating from high school.” Over the summer, the district’s attendance committee, comprised of administrators and

It’s kinda been the joke since I was young. My cousin, Lindsay Clark, always told me someday I would be PTO President. I never thought I would be, though. I hate drama, and always thought it would never work out for me because, well, if you all have seen the movie “Bad Moms” you know what I’m talking about. That first year of Tyler in school went well. I really got to know all of the mommas there and went to the PTO meetings. By his second grade year, I was Vice President. The girls on the board were all pretty great. I knew the test of it would be me picking him up at school on the Harley for the first time. When he turned 7, he was allowed on longer rides and had been begging me to pick him up from school. I

President again. Now that is all fine and dandy until I remembered, I am supposed to make a speech this year at kindergarten orientation. Sweet mother of God! Last year was no big deal, but this year my youngest, Kenzy, starts kindergarten. The clinging has begun, and I don’t really know how this is going to go. Anyone who knows my daughter knows she is just like me. She has this big personality, makes friends super easy, and loves being with people. She isn’t shy in the slightest! I’m worried about her first starting, but think she will do great. Still not ready for this though. I’ve been blessed to be able to stay home with my kids for the past ten years. But, I was told I don’t even have to make a speech this year at the open house since I will be in the audience with my daughter. Phew. That was a close one! I can’t have the kindergarten parents seeing me all weak and sappy! Oh no. I have to get through this next week. Thinking happy thoughts that she is going to get there and love it. She knows the school and many of the teachers because she came with me many of times to print off papers, and do a bunch of things regarding the PTO. So that gives me an easy frame of mind. But either way here, school is back. Buses will run there routes and kids will wake up hungry and need a good breakfast to start off their morning! Remember me saying I have a lot of good easy breakfast recipes? Well here is another one.

ome of the world’s finest drum and bugle corps will be competing at Williamsport Area High School’s STA Stadium Friday, August 30 through Sunday, September 1. Twentyfive of these drum corps will strutting their stuff at the Drum Corps Association World Championships. This event has been described as the “Super Bowl of Drum Corps Competition.” “We are extremely excited to be once again hosting the DCA World Championships here in Williamsport. This has been a true community effort in bringing them here including the Williamsport Area School District, City of Williamsport and numerous volunteers that have stepped forward to help coordinate this event over the last year. Williamsport and Lycoming County have a strong history in the performing arts, and this event adds to that legacy. Now when we finish up with the Little League World Series, people can now turn their attention to another world-class event here in our community with the DCA World Championships. Over 25 corps will be coming to Williamsport

for the various activities associated with the championship. The corps will be practicing at various sites in Lycoming County during their stay here over Labor Day weekend. Programming begins Friday, August 30 in downtown Williamsport with the Individual and Ensemble competition. This event begins at 6 p.m. and will take place in various locations in the central business district. It will culminate with the finals for the I&E competition taking place inside the Community Arts Center. 56-year-old, master lifter. Fred caught the 220-pound lifter under the arms as well as the 500-pound barbell and held all 720 pounds by himself until a group of people could swarm the lift platform to help lift the weight back into the safety rack. Fred did not miss a beat. Like it was no big deal, he dusted himself off and prepared to spot the next lifter. A feat of strength of that magnitude by such an unassuming man is a rare sight and one that I have not forgotten in all of this time. It serves as an inspiration that humans are capable of amazing things and that displays of excellence whether they be athletic, musical, academic, or anything else lifts us all up and make this world a better place — if only for a brief moment. Now 82 years old, and world champion more than 20 times over, Glass still inspires. So, before you decide that life’s aches and pains will keep you from doing the things you love to do and you impose limitations upon yourself, think of Fred Glass and the way he lifted us all up for one brief moment. Only in Fred’s case, it was literal as well as metaphorical.

those who recognized him, however, this was a very accomplished drug-free powerlifting champion. Well, my roommate eventually made it to the competition but not in time to register, so his job then became to coach my other roommate and myself. This involved tracking how other lifters in our weight classes were doing, making sure we were warmed up and that our lifting gear was working properly. We had a few minutes, so the three of us decided to see what the competition was like. A bit before I would begin warming up for my first attempt at the squat, (Powerlifting competitions are comprised of the total of the best of three attempts each in the squat, bench press, and deadlift), a 220-pound lifter had the bar loaded to 500 pounds in the squat. A respectable opening lift. I am not sure if he was distracted by the weather, was unprepared, or simply slipped, but he caught the two young spotters on the ends of the bar completely by surprise by falling backward. Weight and all. This type of fall could have easily been catastrophic for both spotters and lifter. The only person paying attention was the 146 pound,

jewel-toned wedged ankle boot with a midi-dress for date night or dinner with friends. You can also try a brown or gray flat Chelsea-style boot with your go-to summertime chambray shirtdress for a casual workplace or parent-teacher night. If you’re feeling adventurous, try out this season’s high-fashion trends like snake print, combat, or off-white boots for any night-on-the-town plans you may have coming up this fall. Of course, you can’t beat a good old-fashioned cowboy boot with your favorite summertime dress for a charming country style wherever your day takes you. Feel free to play around with various tights, socks,

or no-show socks with your boot choice. For warmer days, less coverage is preferable, but please do not go entirely sockless. Smelly, sweaty feet in boots with no ventilation is not a good look. Next, top off your dress, belt, and boot ensembles with one of fall’s musthave pieces — a blazer! I’m a huge fan of blazers for all seasons, especially in autumn when they add polish to your look, and also serve as a seasonally appropriate cover-up on those slightly cooler September mornings. For floral dresses in any length, a blazer in a color that picks up a shade in the pattern is a win-win. Or, get on the chambray train and pair up your gingham picnic

dress with an on-trend denim blazer. On the flip side, that chambray shift you paired with boots above will look fall time fresh under a tweedy or plaid blazer. Play with patterns by pairing a polka-dot dress with a striped blazer or vice versa. Just make sure the dots and stripes are in the same color, like a white dot on navy and blue stripes on white. For your final touches, swap out your delicate pendants with a heavier chain-link necklace and switch warm weather canvas totes for heftier leather handbags. And for your little white dress, bring it into fall with all black accessories: Black belt, boots, blazer, and bag!

aving been fortunate enough to not only catch, but also bring back from a recent trip to northern Quebec, several dozen brook trout, I was anxious to see just how good they would taste. The trip itself was very special, requiring 24 hours on the road and then a flight into the lake via floatplane. Add to that, these were native fish ranging up to 2 pounds and ten ounces that were very strong fighters and revealed a firm and salmon colored flesh. They certainly had the makings of some great table fare. I wanted to do something special with them. In years past, the usual method of cooking freshly caught trout was to brown butter in a cast iron skillet, add the trout and a pinch of salt and pepper to taste. Occasionally, they would be prepared by placing them in heavy duty aluminum foil, placing some pats of butter inside the body cavity, and a few on the top of the fish, then adding a few slices of lemon. The edges of the foil would be folded up, making a boat-like container to hold all the good juices to keep the fish moist as it cooked on the grill. But again, these were no ordinary

trout. They were firm fleshed native trout that held all the promise of a meal fit for a king! I contemplated what to do, even consulting several fish and game cook books. I even researched how to prepare them by referring to French, Italian, Spanish and Thai cookbooks. But none of them revealed quite what I was looking for. And then, I thought of my friend, Master Grill Chef, Bill Bean, who for the last several years has been cooking meats, vegetables, appetizers, and desserts over a wood fire — and everything he put his hand to turned out to be extremely flavorful! He too was intrigued to try these wild caught native brook trout from a pristine lake in northern Quebec, and invited me to bring a few for him to work his magic on. I arrived the next evening at his home with three beautiful 14” trout, and the preparation began. We wanted to keep it simple, thus we used the tried and true method of placing then in an aluminum foil “boat” and adding just dabs of butter and thin slices of lemon, then a pinch of salt and pepper. The key ingredient in the process, which we hoped would make the difference that we were looking for, is that they would be cooked slowly over a wood fire. For this, Bill used some pieces of oak to start the fire, and once

disappointed! In fact, we were amazed! The flesh of the fish was firm and had turned a slightly darker salmon color — very similar to that of a true salmon. The flavor was mild and salmon-like, with the very mild smoke flavor that put it over the edge! Each of us uttered a “Wow” in amazement at the awesome flavor. The side dish of risotto was the perfect accompaniment for the trout, and a glass of Pinot Grigio topped off this wonderful meal. If you are ever fortunate enough to catch or be given some native brook trout, treat them with respect! They deserve to be prepared in such a way that maximizes their wonderful flavor, as is described above. Bon appétit!

they were burned down to coals, began to add cherry wood and placed the fish in the foil packs on the rack 18 inches above the fire. Smoke would billow up as the cherry wood was added and then Bill would cover the fish in their foil packs with a lid from an old oven roaster. The lid would capture the smoke and hold the heat as the fish slowly cooked under his watchful eye. Meanwhile, Bill’s wife, Karen, was busy in the kitchen preparing a dish of risotto with asparagus and wild mushrooms to accompany the trout. Both the fish and the risotto were ready in about 30 minutes and we sat at the picnic table on the deck — anxious to discover what the meal would be like. We were not

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

The Heron Family

“T

he Heron Family” sounds like the title of a new TV comedy

show. I’m actually talking about a group of long-legged birds that are often found wading the edges of various bodies of water. Probably the most commonly spotted species of the group is the great blue heron; it is also one of the largest of the heron family. The blue-gray bird stands about three feet tall on stilt-like legs. The black “eyebrow” is another identifying characteristic. The great blue heron seems to be a more frequent sighting in Pennsylvania in recent years. Although a large bird, the heron can often be missed. Its blue-gray coloration is inconspicuous, especially when it stands so stationary amidst the brush and weedy growth on the edge of a lake or stream. My son and daughter both have small ponds in their backyards, and both tell me they see great blues feeding on their fish and frogs. Even a tiny pool of water can attract the attention of a heron. This past week we were headed out Route 80 when a severe thunderstorm hit-high winds and low visibility; we pulled over to wait out the storm. After the wind subsided there in

an open grassy area near the edge of the road stood a great blue heron no doubt waiting out the storm as well. Herons are often found near water because they often feed on fish, frogs, crayfish, and other critters found in shallow water. However, they will also eat snakes, insects, invertebrates, and small rodents. Recently Ken someone told me they saw Hunter a heron eating a snake. My guess is it was a water snake that ventured too close to the patiently waiting bird. When not wading herons can often be found perched in trees overhanging the water. While most great blue herons leave Pennsylvania in the winter months, some do linger all winter if food sources don’t all freeze up. I have actually seen great blues in the dead of winter, feeding in the warm water discharge at the Washingtonville power plant. Of course, the great blue isn’t the only heron species to be seen in Pennsylvania. The great egret is also occasionally seen standing about two feet high on long legs with black feet brandishing pure white plumage and a yellow beak. Their feeding habits are very similar to the great blue’s, and they too can be seen wading the brushy lake borders, swamp

lizards, and salamanders. An even rarer sighting is the American bittern, nearly a foot and a half long with a brown and black plumage that blends almost perfectly with the browngreens of the weedy shoreline. It’s a very elusive bird that prefers the cattails and bulrushes of lakes and ponds. I have only ever spotted a couple of these birds. Several years ago, while wading the shoreline of a local lake, I spotted an American bittern with its head and beak pointed upward-a typical pose while standing in the bulrushes. Keep your eyes open and see how many of the heron family you can pick out over the next few weeks — you might be surprised.

edges, and ponds. I have often spotted great egrets while driving south along the Susquehanna River, but I do see them from time to time on our local waterways. There are a couple of others in the heron family that can be spotted, but they are smaller in stature, and they blend in very well due to their natural coloration. The green-backed heron is one that is hard to pick out-its color blends in very well, and its movements are slow and deliberate. The greenback heron is only about 14 inches high with a reddish-brown head and neck and a black crown. You will often find these small herons standing in branches overhanging ponds; here they search for fish, frogs, insects, worms,

first year of the Original League, and his father played in the third year of the league. George played for Lundy Lumber in 19681970. He played as a 13-15-year-old in the Mid City League and in the county Babe Ruth League as a 16-18-year-old. He later was a catcher on the Mansfield University teams. When he left the field and passed through the third-base dugout of the New England champions, Barrington, Rhode Island, the accolades continued. “It was like I had just hit a home run. All the players and coaches started chanting my name, giving me high fives and fist bumps. It was awesome.” Indeed, George Schreppel had delivered a strike and Little League Baseball had hit a home run in their support of ALS.

hopefully find a cure. Now we don’t know what the future might be, but I thank Little League for stepping up to help out. “When I walked out onto the field, I wasn’t nervous. Baseball is my element. Last summer I was asked to speak to the Philadelphia Phillies. I was invited into their locker room to speak to the players about the Phillies ALS efforts. At that time, the president of the Philadelphia ALS chapter asked me if I was nervous. I told her no, it was like talking to my teammates. I loved that experience. “The media was asked to leave the locker room, so it was just the Phillies players and me. They were super, super nice to me.” Schreppel explained that during the past 32 years, the Phillies organization has raised more than 35-million dollars for the Philadelphia ALS chapter. His daughter, Brittany, also helps with an annual candle sale and the family has their own bicycle team that has raised more than $5,000 participating in ALS sponsored rides. “I love the Phillies. I was rooting for them even in the years when they weren’t very good. Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa, Greg Luzinski, Gary Maddox and all of those guys were my favorites.” Schreppel’s opening pitch was a strike into the mitt of 12-year old Noah Culpepper, a catcher for the team from Loudoun South Little League of South Riding, Virginia. “When he gave me the ball, he said, ‘here you go.’ “I leaned into him and told him that when I played Little League, I was a catcher. He got a big smile on his face, and he patted me on the back. He was a really nice kid.” Baseball has always been a big part of Schreppel’s life. George’s uncle played in the

ongratulations to my friends at Little League International. The 2019 World Series was off the charts. I just wanted to say thanks for another great experience. The Spencers made it over to Lamade and Volunteer on a few occasions. My son is obsessed with Little League baseball, and he witnessed most if not all of the action. I had to work, but special shout to big Mike Coledo for taking his grandson to all of the games. Hats off to the talented youngsters who captured the hearts of millions of viewers. These 10, 11 and 12-year-old

ballers continue to amaze. The play and entertainment were outstanding. The game itself might change, but the love for baseball and the memories from last week remain. There were so many special moments with this 2019 World Series. Rather difficult to describe them all. I love where youth baseball is headed. New bats and balls and they got rid of the 200lb 13-year-olds. Well done boys and GIRL and safe travels home. I would also like to applaud the folks who flew to IPT for the BIG game at Historic Bowman. This was the third installment

of the MLB Little League Classic, and this unique showcase continues to exceed all expectations. The interaction with the pros and young players is amazing. From arriving at the airport to the bus. Lamade Stadium and the Sunday Night Baseball Jamie Game itself. OK. I Spencer had to laugh when the Pittsburgh Pirates had a police escort, and they were stuck on the Market Street Bridge. ESPN poked fun of the situation while they waited for five minutes just to turn left. I had my doubts back in 2017. There was definitely a buzz, and our field underwent a major facelift. The City of Williamsport kicked in some cash, and MLB donated a large amount to help with the tab. Rumors quickly spread and it was bedlam. Memorial Park turned into Area 51. How will they ever pull this off? I watched the first Little League Classic from my kayak. It’s true. I have pictures and a retweet from ESPN’s Tim Kirkjan to prove it. The Pirates beat the Cardinals 6 to 3, and those in attendance said the game with the big league players was an inside the park home run. I wouldn’t know I was stranded on Lycoming Creek with no ride home. Jensen and I scored two tickets at very last minute, and we were very fortunate to be in the stands for the 2018 MLB

Classic. A fan of this page must have read my column on MLB from a kayak and hooked us up. I still owe him. We were just three rows behind the New York Mets’ dugout with the Asian Pacific team. I didn’t understand a darn word they said, but we had a ball with our new Korean friends. The game itself was a lot of fun, and the Mets took down the Phillies 8-2. I still have many pictures from that very special night. It was grand. I didn’t get the call for the 2019 MLB Classic. No worries. Been there done that. My media credentials were denied once again, and I struck out in the Disgruntled Residents of Lycoming County. The same people from the area always seem to win. Jensen and his friends from Hepburn Little League got the nod and were seated behind home plate. MLB always invites some local teams to take in the game. In fact, the youngsters from the 17728 were one row from Alex Rodriguez and Jennifer Lopez who came in late. She’s really pretty, Dad. Incredible. Jensen and his mates were everywhere, and I got to see my son getting autographs on ESPN. My phone buzzed whenever there was a sighting on the big screen. My boy is a magnet for TV. He had a great time, and I am very thankful that he had this opportunity. I am proud to say that I am from Williamsport, PA. Congratulations again to my many friends at Little League International. Cheers.
