Thanks and Giving for a “Wonderful World”
H
eartfelt Happy Thanksgiving wishes to you and everyone that makes your world a special place. What an absolutely amazing day. A day to give thanks to God for all that we are so very blessed with. A day to share the spirit of this blessing with family, friends, and loved ones. It’s a cornucopia of fun, food, and football. No presents required, just a smile on your face and a thankful heart. A tip of my Pilgrim hat with the American Flag on the side to the Moms and Grandmothers for all the prep work and early morning wake up to make sure Thanksgiving Dinner is just perfect. And for putting up with the football smorgasbord that runs right up till bedtime. For those of you wondering, no, I do not have a pilgrim hat, but if I did, I would put an American Flag on the side. A tip of my camo winter hunting hat, complete with that facemask for extra cold weather, to all that participate in an annual Thanksgiving Day Turkey Bowl. I can’t wait; I get to play all-time quarterback, even though my son Hunter sometimes gets upset with some of my
lame duck passes. Or maybe I should say terrible turkey tosses. The best Annual Turkey Bowl Award goes to the Person and Baggett families. Lycoming College’s David Person Field provides the perfect Thanksgiving Day setting. And boy do the feathers fly — a lot of great athletes on the field for this game. Of course, it’s all in good football family fun, and everybody enjoys an adult beverage afterward. There is no truth to the rumor that this may also occur before and during the game. Please remember the more seasoned members of your family that might not make it to your family table. Whether they are enjoying the day at home or maybe in a nursing facility, make the time to go say Happy Thanksgiving. Make sure you take along some leftovers complete with dessert. This also applies to a friend, neighbor, or somebody you know that would love to see a smiling face and enjoy some turkey with the trimmings. If you come across a complete stranger that might not have a family table to sit at or maybe a hat or gloves to keep warm, thank God for this opportunity. Extend a helping hand and share a little of what
you are so very blessed with. It will only take a minute to hopefully make someone’s day a little better. Thanksgiving is a great learning opportunity for children. Teach them about giving thanks to God and Jim Webb, Jr. helping others in the name of Jesus. When you say Thanksgiving Day Grace include the young folks, let them add in whatever they are thankful for. Now here is the really difficult part that many people miss. Minus the Macy’s Day Parade, turkey dinner, and football, Thanksgiving should be every day. We are all so truly blessed to live in our One Nation under God. Just imagine if we all approached every day with Thanksgiving Day gratitude and selflessness. We could create that “Wonderful World” Louis Armstrong brings to life with his unmistakable voice. It is one of my alltime favorites, give it a listen and share it with the children. The song provides a perfect Thanksgiving Day message. Speaking of the Macy’s Day Parade — this year will be the 93rd time the event marches through the streets of Manhattan. A tip of my New York Yankee cap to Williamsport’s very own
Dale Schenck. This year will mark the 35th time he has attended the event. Several of these years, Dale volunteered as a balloon handler for the Thanksgiving Day Classic. It takes over 2,500 volunteers to make sure your favorite Thanksgiving inflatable doesn’t end up in or above Bullwinkle, Maine. Dale’s favorite balloon that he has helped tether was the traditional Macy’s Tom Turkey, which is the oldest and most recurring balloon/float in the parade?. The oversized gobbler has changed his appearance several times over the years. Good luck and safe travels to Dale and all the balloon handlers; hopefully, it’s a calm day in the Big Apple. I believe it was Underdog that took off on a flight of his own not too many years ago. Happy Thanksgiving to all, and let’s all be careful out there. Whether you’re on the road traveling, enjoying some Black Friday shopping or hitting the woods for Saturday’s opening day of Pennsylvania’s rifle deer season. There will be a lot of hustle and bustle going on — please allow yourself some extra time. Good luck and always safety first to the hunters. Remember, if you’re fortunate enough to get your buck, register it in our Annual Uncle Ron’s Monster Buck Contest. Just by doing so you’re helping the fight against MS. (Details on page 51) God Bless America.

verwhelming gratitude,” that is the way that Vickie Biichle feels after winning the 2019 KISS FM Extreme Kitchen Makeover. When she sent her one and only entry into the contest, she never really expected to win. “I never thought I would win with all those thousands of other entries,” Vickie told Webb Weekly. “My husband, Howard Biichle Jr. and I were so surprised and so happy winning this.” Vickie strongly believes that some “good karma” came into play for them to have won a contest of this magnitude. “A couple of years ago my father, Paul Harris, a retired pressman at the Grit, was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy,” Vickie said. “His disability prevented him from living by himself anymore and he needed constant care, so my husband and moved from our fairly modern house in Loyalsock Township to my dad’s house on Sherman Street. It was like stepping back into the 1950s or 1960s and it lacked a lot of the conveniences that we had in our Loyalsock home.” She said that they made the move fairly cheerfully but it was still a tough adjustment that required a lot of sacrifice. Her father died last year. “I think that the sacrifices that we made were well worth it and I would not trade for anything the wonderful memories I was

According to Gary Chrisman, host of the “Chrisman Morning Show” on WKSB-KISS FM, this is the eleventh time that KISS-FM has had the Extreme Kitchen Makeover contest. He said it worked this way, there were thousands of people listening hourly for the key word and then entered on line to win the grand prize. It eventually boiled down to five finalists. A secret drawing was held among the five finalists off-air and

an electronic home security system, Service 1st Federal Credit Union donated a $1,000 Visa gift card to the Biichles, and Bill’s Appliance on Lycoming Creek Road, supplied brand new stainless steel Maytag appliances for the new kitchen. Williamsport Moving Company took care of moving and storing the Biichles’ furniture and other items while the 10-day makeover was taking place. The Biichles themselves were put up at the Genetti Hotel and Convention Center during this same period. Other businesses and sponsors involved in the Extreme Makeover included: Modern Heritage of Mifflinburg, Art of Living Design, Mifflinburg, Bob’s Disposal, Howe’s Painting and Dry Wall, Elery Nau Hardware in Montoursville, provided the paint for the project, the plumbing was done by R&J Ertel, Ralph Colone of Woodrich, Dave Stom of New Life Floors, as well as Chef Hosch and Ann Catering will provide a fully catered meal for eight for the Biichles, and Pudgies Pizza of Lycoming Creek Road provided lunch for the workers each day while working on the Makeover. For Chrisman a promotion like this is what makes working in radio fun and worthwhile for him. “This is what it is all about, to see the joy on the faces of our various winners is so much fun and is so satisfying to me,” Chrisman said. “Times like this are why I enjoy working in radio. This is one of the greatest radio promotions ever done in this radio market. It is a big time production. We have great sponsors and great listeners. It does not get any better than this.”

the Biichles found out they were the lucky winners on the morning of November 8, when a caravan of contractors and Chrisman and people from KISS FM pulled up to their house and delighted the surprised Biichles. The “big reveal” of the finished project came on November 18. “You can’t do something on the scale of this without the help of some very generous sponsors,” Chrisman said. “They went the extra mile for the grand prize winners. They received not only a brand new kitchen, but an entirely new state of the art living area.” He said for the second year in a row TurnKey Construction headed up by Maurice and Matt Bower, oversaw the work and. Mike Bower of TurnKey Electric, handled the electrical work. Chrisman said “Once again Maurice Bower and his team from TurnKey went above and beyond and hit it out the park to make this Makeover even bigger and better.” The kitchen design was provided by Paul Albert, Architect. There are a lot of other sponsor-contractors that helped make the happiness of the winners of the Extreme Kitchen Makeover. The cabinetry was provided by Lezzer Design Center of Lewisburg. Susquehanna Marble and Granite of Montoursville provided the granite countertops. Penn Hills Flooring of Muncy provided brand new flooring. aul Whiteman won Williamsport. Not only did the splendid concert he presented amply reward the devotees who waltzed until 12:10 o’clock this morning to hear him but his personality, apparent in every gesture and word, gave him a firm place in the estimation of the theater goers. Seldom, if ever, has a concert had a better house and the capacity audience was brought to its feet several times. Paul Whiteman is an exponent of the highest type of music. He has infused into jazz something of the wonders of the masters. He is a master, and the reaction of his orchestra to slightest of the twitch baton, showed under what coordination they played. Outstanding among the selections was, George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.” The first rhapsody written for
solo instruments and the American orchestra. It has been scored by Ferde Grofe, and last evening’s, or rather this morning’s soloist was Barry Perella. Mr. Perella’s rendition of the piano part was flawless, while the entire orchestra, entering wholly into the spirit of the composition, brought forth waves of sound which swelled and diminished according to their leader’s indication. The appearance of one of the purest and cleanest tenors ever to appear on the stage, was heralded by the opening strains of “Esmerelda,” the first Irish fantasy scored for a modern American orchestra. Morton Downey, in his place in the ensemble, stood in the spotlight and sang “An Irish Lullaby” with an unusual depth of feeling and interpretation. He was encored, giving two popular numbers. The orchestra reached Williamsport yesterday afternoon and was the guest at a dinner at the Elk’s Club.

The Final Battle By Scott N. Lowery (Note: This is the final segment of a four-part story of my July trip to Europe re-tracing the path my father, Ralph N. Lowery, took as a member of the Pennsylvania 28th Division during World War II. The segment reveals actions that took place in and around Hurtgen Forest and Bastogne, Belgium.)
A
s chronicled previously, Dad had kept a journal of his military experiences from the day he enlisted in January 1941until the summer of 1944 when his unit received orders to embark for Normandy. Following that time, my recollection of his wartime movements came via conversations we shared over the years. Some of those stories were vivid, others he at times was reluctant to discuss. After the Allies’ two-month push to drive the Germans out of France, one of Dad’s happier moments came on August 25, 1944, when he and thousands of other Allied troops marched through the Arc D’ Triumph as Paris was liberated. He recalled his unit marching through the Arc to the jubilation and appreciation of the French people. With the German army being pushed back to their own country’s borders, all seemed relatively quiet through the autumn of that year. Dad’s 28th Division left France and enjoyed some downtime in Luxembourg and Belgium. Many thought it was just a matter of time until the war would be over. Those notions were suddenly smashed as
A memorial to the soldiers of the Pennsylvania 28th Division located near Bastogne, Belgium. the Germans made one final push to retake ground they had lost, and on December 16, the bloody Battle of the Bulge commenced. In that 1944 winter, Dad’s unit was among a massive Allied force that invaded German soil. He was engaged in bitter fighting during the Battle of the Bulge until January 25, 1945, as the Allies drove into Germany seeking to destroy the Germans’ ability to supply themselves. The battle took a heavy toll as 80,000 Americans and more than 100,000 Germans were killed. To fulfill our mission to trace Dad’s WWII footsteps, Doug had been able to identify a Belgium guide willing to help us out. This was to be no ordinary, book-smart trained guide. His name was Henry Migion, a spry 84-year-old man who was a nine-yearold boy living in a farmhouse just outside Bastogne, Belgium, when the Battle of the Bulge broke out. He had lived the horror

first-hand, and the stories he would tell us commanded our constant attention. Not knowing exactly where Dad had been during the Battle of the Bulge, Henry agreed to take us along the known general path of the 28th Division’s movements. Similar to what we had experienced in Normandy, the small Belgium villages all had erected various size monuments thanking the American troops for what they had done to gain their freedom. Dad had talked a lot about the miserable conditions faced while fighting in the Hurtgen Forests stretched out along the Belgium/Germany border. He described them as being bitterly cold, dark and penetrating. As Henry led us into the forest of winding paths, I immediately sensed what Dad’s description had meant. The denseness of the trees blocked out the July sun. Heavy moss covered the forest floor, and as I stood there wearing a light windbreaker in the middle of the summer, I could still feel a penetrating chill. I can’t imagine what it would have been like at this same location in the dead of winter. Dad described his movements in the Hurtgen Forest as gaining small segments of ground, digging foxholes, surviving the artillery shelling, and doing the exact same things the next day. Move, dig, and take cover was his mode of survival for two horrendous months. During our forest visit, Henry showed us the remnants of foxholes; trenches dug to provide the GI’s with movement without exposing themselves and the remains of German entrenched bunkers.
Although I could never establish the exact location, I recall Dad’s somber tale regarding his brother, Warren. As the Battler of the Bulge raged on, Dad was summoned to a battle site several miles from his own location to the grim task of identifying the body of his younger brother who had been killed in action. Dad had said that he didn’t even know his brother was in Germany. Dad considered himself lucky and stressed over Warren’s passing, explaining that he had some very close calls. In one instance, he and some buddies decided to scope out a nearby farmhouse with chickens roaming the yard. They intended to get some fresh eggs and maybe a bird or two. As they approached, they saw German soldiers on the other side of the farm, apparently with the same objective in mind. Dad’s group laid low and exited the premises as quietly as they could. Within minutes, artillery rained down on the farmhouse. Looking back, they could see the German soldiers lying dead among the chickens. On another occasion, Dad had walked down a forest path and upon returning voices from soldiers in the bushes, ordered him to stop with hands up. He figured it was the Germans and that he would be killed. Instead, it was an American patrol. They told him not to move as the path was loaded with mines the Germans had placed there. He waited as the GI’s disarmed the mines. He had just walked down this same path and by

some miracle, had avoided stepping on any of the mines. With death all around him, he seemed to have had a guardian angel looking over him. As we continued on our two-day journey with Henry, his stories amazed us. He told us about going to school on December 16 with the teacher telling them to go home and come back tomorrow. They never did return to school until a year later. Upon returning home, he found the Germans occupying their farmhouse. They did not harm his family, but they were forced to live in the basement with the Germans using the rest of the house and his mother cooking meals for them. Henry described the Germans as polite and remembers them telling him if the S.S. troops ever showed up to run and hide as they were vicious. Even the regular German Army was leery of them. The Americans and the British retaliated with a massive two-day bombing campaign. Henry recalls seeing the sky filled day and night with hundreds of bombers, saying that he will never forget the sound. During an apparent cessation in the bombing, Henry’s father ventured out into his fields to see if any of the livestock were alive. While there, an Allied bomb exploded nearby with the resulting shrapnel striking him in the chest, killing him. As he told the story, I reluctantly asked about his feelings toward Americans. Somewhat surprisingly, his response was similar to what we had heard in Normandy. He said he was deeply saddened his father was killed, but even at that young age, he

knew the Americans had to prevail for them to be able to live their lives in freedom. He later took us to a tavern, still standing there today, at a key crossroads used by the advancing American troops. He then stood on the very spot he did 75 years ago and showed us where he waved to the passing Americans. He recalls the troops throwing them candy, cigarettes, and chewing gum. Not knowing what chewing gum was the young Belgium children at first tried to eat it. A special treat was American white bread. They had never seen that before, and it was soft and sweet, a stark contrast to the dark hard-crusted bread they had consumed all their lives. A final solemn moment occurred when Henry took us to a site described as the ‘Malmedy Massacre.’ It was at this location that members of that feared 1st German SS Panzer Division captured 84 American prisoners of war on December 17, 1944. The German captors assembled the Americans in a field and shot them to death with machine guns. That was 75 years ago, but as I stood there amidst a lush green, grassy field with cows grazing around us on that very site, my eyes filled with water, and I had to walk away. War has always been described as hell, but after our 12 days of history, tracing steps had shown us mankind is out of their collective minds to ever let this happen again. It was a trip of a lifetime that Doug and I will always remember. We not only shared it together, we brought Dad’s journal memories and his dog tags along for the ride.

GREAT DEALS FROM LOCAL EATERIES!
no bother. Say WHATTT!? You are kidding me, right? I was skeptical about how this would turn out, but had to try it! I placed the turkey in my oven as hot as it could go, at 500 degrees. Set a timer for exactly one hour and let the turkey bake. After an hour, right before bed, I turned my oven off and DO NOT open the door. You let your oven cool down, which will take 4-6 hours. (It slow cooks it!) That morning I woke up I had the most beautiful turkey I ever made in my life!! I couldn’t believe it! It was so juicy, moist, and hassle-free! I will include the

Adjust the oven racks so the covered roasting pan fit easily inside. Preheat the oven to 500 degrees F. Rub the butter on the outside and in the cavity of the turkey. Sprinkle the salt and pepper on the inside and the outside of the turkey. Put the celery, onion and carrot in the cavity. Place the turkey, breast-side up, in a large roasting pan. Pour the boiling water into the pan. Cover with a tightfitting lid and put the pan in the oven. Start a timer when the oven temperature returns to 500 degrees F. Bake for exactly 1 hour and turn off the oven. Do not open the oven door! Leave the turkey in the oven until the oven completely cools; this may take 4 to 6 hours. Reserve the pan juices and refrigerate the turkey if it will not be served soon after roasting.

IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WAY YOUR LEGS LOOK, BUT HOW THEY FEEL
Do you have restless legs? Do your legs feel tired, achy and ‘heavy’ by the end of the day? Do you get swelling, itching or tingling of the legs as the day goes on? Do you have varicose or spider veins? All of these symptoms can be caused by venous insufficiency.
E
ach year in September the Susquehanna Valley Corvette Club holds their annual Corvettes on Main Street Car Show in downtown Muncy, PA. This year was the Club’s 12th annual show. In conjunction with the car show, the Club’s Foundation held a raffle where the 1stprize winner had their choice of a 2019 Corvette, a 2019 Silverado Truck, or $35,000 cash. All net proceeds of the Car Show and the raffle benefit the Club’s scholarship fund at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The drawing for the raffle was held on Saturday, September 21st during the Car Show and the lucky 1st prize winner was Danielle Pisarcik from Homer City, PA. After a short deliberation, Danielle chose the 2019 Corvette as her prize. Danielle wrote the Club a heartfelt thank you note where she explained that she has always dreamed of being able to own a Corvette. A friend of hers purchased a 2019 Corvette and offered to let her drive the car, but she just couldn’t. She said that she wanted her first time driving a 2019 Corvette to be in HER Corvette. Shortly after that, Danielle saw an advertisement for the Susquehanna Valley Corvette Club Foundation’s 2019 Raffle. She decided to take a chance and she bought two tickets. She is so glad that she did, because now there is a beautiful 2019 Long Beach Red Corvette Stingray Coupe sitting in her garage. She said that she keeps going out to look at it and it still takes her by surprise each time. Danielle wrote that her mom

The members of the Club are very happy that the winner of the Corvette is someone, like Danielle, that will truly enjoy their car. They hope to see Danielle, and her Corvette, at the 2020 Corvettes on Main Street Car Show!! The Susquehanna Valley Corvette Club would like to thank everyone who supported the Club this year. T
his is one of the most popular verses found in the Bible. It is a statement of hopeful inspiration for anyone facing difficult or challenging circumstances. Athletes use it as motivation to overcome training obstacles and opponents. It is a prayer offered by students as they take a final exam, by Little Leaguers as they step up to the plate, and by accident victims who are facing months of painful rehabilitation. Cancer patients meditate on it to get through an especially painful chemo treatment. Grieving spouses and parents whisper it to themselves as they walk through the valley of the shadow of death. It is repeated over and over by soldiers seeking courage in the midst of battle. It is a lifeline for believers around the world who face persecution, torture and death. I too have quoted that verse to power through difficult seasons in my life. I am so grateful that the Holy Spirit inspired Paul to write that verse. Frankly, I can’t imagine life without it. A quick read of Philippians 4 reveals that Paul wrote that verse while declaring that he had learned the secret of being content in the midst of whatever circumstances he was facing. Those words, I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me, refer specifically to the ability to be content whatever the circumstances. The word content is defined as being in a state of peaceful happiness. So to put Paul’s words into context, he was saying that he had found the secret to enjoying
peaceful happiness in the midst of any circumstance, good or bad. That’s quite a statement. And Paul found himself in plenty of bad circumstances. Listen to how he describes his sufferings in II Corinthians 11, “I have . . . been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes Tim minus one. Three times I was beaten Hartzell with rods, once I was pelted with stones, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move. I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles; in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers. I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food; I have been cold and naked.” When Paul says he was pelted with stones, he is referring to an occasion when he was stoned to death and his body was drug outside the city to rot. Seriously, this guy faced a lot of trouble in life – a lot more than I have. We would be wise to listen to his advice. So how does a person experience a state of peaceful happiness even in the midst of the worst circumstances? What is the secret to which Paul was referring? It is simply this: The strength that comes through experiencing an intimate relationship with Jesus Christ. Paul understood a very basic and vital truth:

FAITH
In Jesus Christ, our lives serve a higher purpose. In Galatians 2:20 he writes, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” With that understanding, he was able to see every thorn, setback, injury and betrayal as something God had designed or allowed to serve a higher purpose. New Testament believers often saw suffering and hardship as a privileged opportunity to bring glory to God. Paul shared this perspective and it inspired him to write II Corinthians 12:7-10, “in order to keep me from becoming conceited, I was given a thorn in my flesh, a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me. But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” In Christ, life is bigger than us. God’s ways are higher than our ways. When we place our full trust in Him, our perspective changes and even the worst that life can throw our way becomes opportunities to serve God’s higher purposes as we allow His power to be put on full display. The Narcissistic self-worship perpetuated by those who preach and teach a prosperity based get-what-you-want gospel has stolen away the resolve of today’s believer to eagerly suffer for the cause of Christ. We have developed into powerless cry-babies who whine and complain about the very difficulties God has designed to bring about His higher purposes – both in and
through us. We have gutted the gospel and many “believers” are nothing more than empty shells of true Christianity. I can speak with authority on this topic because too often I have been one of those empty shells. Believer, are you suffering today? If so, be thankful, for God has chosen you to be a vessel through which He is displaying His mighty power. If you don’t see it that way, then it may be time to revisit your salvation and the glorious purposes for which God has called you heavenward in Christ Jesus. Paul wasn’t perfect, and at times he needed to do the same thing. Listen to his statement found in Philippians 3:12-14, “Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” May God put the guts back into us believers. Through Christ, may we gain the courage, strength and perseverance to display genuine contentment regardless of the circumstances. May we be the ambassadors of Jesus Christ in a world that is starving for hope, peace and purpose. In thanksgiving, I would like to mention the gut-filled believers who have demonstrated God’s power in the midst of their suffering and weakness, and in so doing, have rallied my spirit to also stand strong in the midst of bad circumstances. You “shine like stars in the sky as you hold firmly to the word of life.” I thank God for you. I want you to know that you have profoundly impacted my life. Thank you.

The New Love Center Feeds Those in Need
I
f your house is like mine during the holidays, it is filled with friends, family, and lots of food. I have been celebrating Thanksgiving, in particular, with my wife’s family for more than 20 years and it involves getting together a group that sometimes exceeds 120 people. There are tables of turkey with stuffing, potatoes, gravy, and all of the usual fixings. Other tables hold casseroles and salads and desserts get an entire section of the large fire hall where we hold our annual Thanksgiving celebration. A prayer is said promptly at noon every year and the feast takes place immediately after that. I am actually getting hungry just thinking about it.
Though a Thanksgiving celebration of this magnitude may be atypical for most people, it is likely that some sort of sit-down gathering with large amounts of food and socializing takes place. Unfortunately for some people, however, just getting by is a daily struggle. Over 50% of the children in the Jersey Shore Area School District receive free or reduced school breakfasts and lunches. In addition, some area seniors often have to choose between buying medication or buying food because they cannot afford to do both. This is where the New Love Center works to fill the gap. Recognizing a growing food insecurity, a dedicated group of people has
stepped up. The New Love Center was organized in 2014 when the original Love Center in Jersey Shore announced it was closing. The Jersey Shore area churches then worked together and the new organization was created. The New Love Center was incorporated in 2016 and Dave received their non-profit Bellomo status in 2017. Currently the organization is spread out over four physical locations that each performs specific functions: St. John Lutheran Church hosts the Food Pantry, Trinity United Methodist Church hosts the Cafe, First United Methodist Church partners for additional
freezer space and holiday distribution, and the Phelps Chapel hosts the Back Pack Program for children. The American Legion Post #36 hosts the MilitaryShares program, though it is funded separately. The numbers are impressive and show how much work is being put into this great program. In 2018, the New Love Center served 4,817 households, 11,437 people, and distributed 202,896 meals. In addition, 32,448 pounds of food was donated; not counting the donations the FBLA collected to make up their Christmas and Easter boxes. Among those served were 16 to 23 homeless. None of this would have been possible, however, without the huge number of dedicated volunteers, where 2,874 volunteers donated 9,844 hours. Current operations include: Food Bank and Pantry Food Distribution

For the Holiday season, the November food distribution will be held on the regularly scheduled days. Christmas distribution will be held on Dec 13th from 8am-3pm and the facility expects to serve up to 500 families at St. John Lutheran Church. Participating families will then proceed to the First United Methodist Church were they will be given a Christmas box and a turkey for their Christmas dinner. Among the many volunteers, are area students. Recently, as part of a community service project, the Jersey Shore High School Soccer Team helped to pack 500 boxes on Thursday November 7th. In addition, the FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), made up of Jersey Shore Area High School students, has taken up the collection of food and packing of Holiday boxes, and helps distribute the boxes at the First United Methodist Church in Jersey Shore. They are currently in the process of collecting items to pack 500 boxes. “Their program WE SHORE CARE has won them many awards and we are so blessed to have their help!” said Christine Barner, Logistics Coordinator for the New Love Center. “We know the numbers will be higher for 2019. We have been getting new clients each month as we went from packing 450 to 500 boxes each month! None of this would be possible without all our wonderful and faithful volunteers! Speaking for my husband Dave and myself, we feel the Lord has blessed us and are so happy to be able to be a helping hand! We’ve made so many new friends and Love helping others!” said Barner. For more information or if you would like to donate or volunteer please call the New Love Center at 570-772-3275 or 570-244-8838.

The Cafe is located at Trinity United Methodist Church, 1407 Alleghany St, Jersey Shore and is in operation Monday through Friday. Coffee is served after 8:30 am and lunch from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. MilitaryShares is run by the American Legion, George W. Pepperman Post #36, 320 Seminary St., Jersey Shore where they distribute a box of food on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. to veterans. Backpack Program, through Phelps Chapel, delivers backpacks of food to the Jersey Shore, Avis, and Salladasburg Elementary Schools, and the Jersey Shore Area Middle School every Friday. The program currently fills over 200 backpacks each week for distribution. With need and demand outgrowing the capabilities of the current space, the New Love Center purchased land where they plan to build a state of the art Food Hub facility where all aspects of the operation will be under one roof. In addition, the group plans to add new programs and services when the new facility is complete.

Branch Chorale Presents Three Christmas Concerts In Conjunction With Its 50th Anniversary By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
I
n conjunction with its upcoming 50th anniversary, the members of the West branch Chorale will celebrate in the way they know best — with three Christmas concerts to be presented on consecutive Sundays, December 1, 8, and 15. The West Branch was founded in 1970 when a group of five Muncy musicians decided to form a community singing group and placed an ad in The Muncy Luminary newspaper. The ad opened with: “Are you a singer on the concert stage or in the shower? From senior high to senior citizen, it doesn’t matter — we want you! The Muncy Valley Community Chorus invites you to sing for fun and pleasure. Sacred, secular, and popular music.” The first practice was held on September 14, 1970. About 30 interested singers attended the first practice at the First Methodist Church on Market Street in Muncy. Mr. Robert Ebner was the first director for this group, with Ms. Mary Mason taking over after him. Lucille Buck, a Hughesville musician, was the first
accompanist. The routine for this group became two concerts in the spring and two concerts during the Christmas season. This is still true today. After the spring concerts in 1977, director Mary Mason stepped down as director to pursue her educational goals. There were 17 members in the group at the time. The executive board elected Mrs. Jeanne Berninger as director, and she filled this position admirably until her retirement after the spring concerts in 2016. Mrs. Joy Barto became the accompanist in 1984 and continues today. The executive board went to work to find a replacement for Berninger. After names were submitted and an ad placed, it was time to interview and have live rehearsals with the prospects. Mrs. Shirley Smith was chosen, and their rehearsals and concerts continued. Shirley led them successfully until she tendered her resignation effective June 1, 2019. The executive board went back again to work to find a successor. Names were submitted, and contacts made. Once again, it was time for interviews and practice rehearsals with the Chorale members. The executive board chose

Branch Chorale. They have members coming from Muncy, Hughesville, Montoursville, Williamsport, Millville, Turbotville, and Sullivan County. The West Branch Chorale has been a dedicated group of people that love to sing. Many come from area church choirs, but others come from contact with friends or neighbors. The Chorale has sung at a host of different events. From Memorial Day ceremonies, the Muncy Valley Hospital Lawn Party, events for the Muncy Historical Society, at Indian Park in Montoursville, at Central Oak Heights in West Milton, and events in Eagles Mere just to name a few. They have also done shows at the Muncy High School
with the high school chorus, with pit band and costumes and dance numbers. The Chorale has also made trips abroad. In 1991 the group accepted an invitation by American Music Abroad to travel to Europe and perform in different churches and concert halls throughout Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and France. In June of 1995, the Chorale traveled to England, Scotland, and Wales. There was also another trip taken to California, north into Canada and back by rail. “A lot of friendships have been made while sitting at rehearsals. The Chorale typically sing two concerts each season. They have also sung at various events locally,” Neil Winder, a member of the
Chorale told Webb Weekly. Winder said that people who attend the Christmas Classics shows can expect a nice mixture of religious and secular music that is sure to put you in the Christmas mood. The West Branch Chorale’s upcoming concerts this Christmas season will be on December 1 at Pleasant View Wesleyan Church on Penn Street, Muncy, at 3 p.m. Then, on December 8, they will be a featured guest of the Williamsport Music Club’s Christmas Music by Candlelight. This concert will be held at the Pine Street United Methodist Church at 4 p.m. The final concert this season will be held at Faxon-Kenmar United Methodist Church in Williamsport on December 15 at 3 p.m.

Mr. Brian Scott as their new director. They have been practicing and have their concert schedule for the Christmas season. The number of singers has fluctuated over the years. They have had as few as 17 to as many as 84. There are approximately 40 singers in the Chorale at this time. Their practices are held at the Baptist Church on Penn Street in Muncy, Monday nights from 7:30-9:30 p.m. Members don’t just hail from the Muncy area. For the first 14 years, the name of the group was the Muncy Valley Community Chorus because most of the members came from Muncy and Hughesville. So in 1984, the name was changed to the West

your tight high-heels on Thanksgiving, instead, slip into a walkable shoe with room to wiggle. Again, this will be an all-day event in a warm house with folks eating, drinking, and laughing all in the same space, so it’ll be hot, and maybe a bit cramped and everyone’s feet will swell a bit. Plus, comfortable shoes will come in handy for the post-meal walk everyone will say they want to go on, but only a handful will actually make it out the door. I love the idea of a moccasin-style loafer that’s durable enough for a light walk but feels like a slipper inside. No matter what you end up wearing or not wearing, hopefully, this Thanksgiving will find you and your family happy, healthy, and heart warmed.

Do yourself a favor and dress in layers. Wear something presentable under your cute holiday sweater so you can take it off while still being appropriate. A simple white t-shirt will do the trick. Or, go with a sleeveless blouse and cardigan combo. If you’re sporting a button-down, try an embellished tank top underneath. I would advise against camisoles, as they come across more like lingerie than a layer. No matter how stifling it is, you don’t want it to look like you were in your underwear in the group picture at the dinner table. Lastly, footwear. This may seem like a no-brainer, but we’re all guilty of wearing shoes that look great but pinch our feet when they inevitably swell. Skip over

ery few people can make it to the Executive Plaza in downtown Williamsport on a Tuesday or Thursday morning to attend a County Commissioners Meeting. Not many more have the extra time and energy to go to a public location to review a proposed county budget. But good news is here! The county is as close as your smartphone or computer. Those who follow this column know that the debate on live streaming the commissioners’ meetings has been debated for the better part of a year now. I received some negative feedback for disparaging this with a satirical article, primarily because I have attended hundreds of these meetings in the past four years and can attest that they consist of about 95 percent routine procedural matters, and maybe five percent of significant topics or interesting debate. From a cost/benefit analysis standpoint, it did not seem worth it. But the commissioners came up with
a very satisfying compromise. They now film the meetings with one camera and microphone and then post it on YouTube. This is as low cost as it can be, and it allows county residents access to the meeting proceedings at their own convenience. The listing on YouTube is “Lycoming County Government,” and the first listing is “Nov 14, 2019, Public Meeting.” Be aware. This is not a Hollywood production. The camera is fixed on the three county commissioners who are flanked by the county solicitor J. David Smith and the county’s administration manager, and it does not move through the entire program. Quite a few people are addressing the

Reading budgets can be a cure for insomnia, but even to a cynic such as myself, OpenGov makes it rather exciting. There are pie charts that clearly and simply outline where the funds are going. It is possible to choose between line graphs, pie charts, column bar graphs, and more. Care to compare last year’s budget to this year’s? How about the last five years? It is amazingly simple to use, and even a little fun. One thing is for sure; there will undoubtedly be more people looking at the county budget than there ever were before. And that is what all this is about. More folks will be able to see a County Commissioner meeting or review a county budget at their own convenience. Do not forget, also, that past columns of County Hall Corner are available on this paper’s website, webbweekly.com. It is important to be informed and engaged, because as Thomas Jefferson reminded us, “We do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. He can be reached by email: lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

commissioners through this meeting, and all you hear is their voice. It is one hour and twenty-three minutes long, so you will need a big bucket of popcorn to get through it all. But it works, and that’s what counts. If you are a regular reader of County Hall Corner and wonder what actually goes on for real, here is the chance to check it out. The other new feature in county government has to do with reviewing fiscal documents such as the county budget. In the past, it was necessary to go to locations such as various area fire companies to attend a public review of the budget or go to the James V. Brown Library or county commissioners office itself to get a copy to examine. But now it is possible to review the budget from the comfort of your own electronic device. Opening the county’s website, lyco.org, highlights a bold heading, “Budget Public Outreach Meetings.” There is a sentence in the first paragraph that states, “The 2020 proposed budget is available on Lycoming County’s new fiscal transparency portal, OpenGov.” The “OpenGov” is a link, and clicking on it takes the reader directly to the budget.

hanksgiving is a time to enjoy your family, friends, and of course—food. However, if you have diabetes, it can pose a problem since many Thanksgiving feasts are full of calories and carbohydrates. From mashed potatoes full of butter to candied yams, the Thanksgiving table can be hard to navigate with diabetes. Consider the following tips to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner and not feel deprived: Have a Plan for the Day The most important thing to do before the big day is to plan ahead. Write down your goals for the day and what is most important to you. It is likely the things that will be most important won’t be pumpkin pie, it will be making memories with the ones you love, but if food does make the list, add it to your plan.

Don’t Let Diabetes Stop You From Enjoying Thanksgiving At the beginning of the celebration, look at all the food, including the appetizers and desserts and decide what you will and won’t be eating that day. Remember, you don’t need to eat a sampling of every side dish or dessert, just your favorite and healthiest choices. Moderation is also a key to success on the big day. Make sure if highcarbohydrate foods make your game plan, that you only eat small amounts. Bring Diabetic-Friendly Dish to Pass If you aren’t in control of the menu for the day, make sure you bring a diabetes-friendly dish-to-pass as a healthier option. There are plenty of ways to make simple substitutions and online sources can help you transform your Thanksgiving into a healthier eating experience. You may also want to bring a tray of fresh vegetables with an appropriate dressing so that you have something

The great thing about Thanksgiving is turkey can be a good food choice — unless it is fried. It is still important to watch your portions and count your calories and carbohydrates. Learn to Say No When your family and friends push food your way, just say no. Food has always been a way that people show their love, but don’t fall into that trap. Just a simple, “No, thank you” will usually work.

hanksgiving weekend is recognized as the most heavily traveled weekend of the year. It is a fact, as thousands upon thousands of people all across our state and across the nation will fly or drive to meet up with friends and relatives to share some quality time together. There will be football, lots of food and plenty of conversation as we catch up on what has been happening in our lives over the past year. Some folks will do some hunting or take a traditional hike through the woods to help our stomachs settle after a belly full of turkey and all the wonderful side dishes! Thanksgiving is also a perfect time of the year to take a few minutes and reflect – on what has happened throughout your past and where things are headed in your future. It is a time to reflect on the struggles of the past and the hopes of the future, remembering that if you focus too much on the past, you lose the vision into the future. It is a great opportunity to inventory all the good in your life and thus realize all of the bounties that you currently enjoy.
These days, so many folks seem to be mired down in the daily routine of their jobs that they simply don’t realize how great things are. When you do take a few minutes to inventory all the good in your life, what are you thankful for? As I reflect back on my three quarters of a century on this planet, there are so many simple things in my life that have shaped who I am and what my life has been. I believe that I am truly fortunate to have grown up in the rural setting of Northcentral Pennsylvania, to have spent my formative years of education in the Montoursville school district and at Lycoming College, and to have served in the Air Force, which enabled me to have a greater understanding and appreciation for this unique and magnificent country of ours. To have enjoyed a family life of almost 25 years, and to this day to continue to share time with two wonderful sons that I am extremely proud of is truly a blessing that continues to bring great joy. To have had struggles and challenges in the past to work through and learn from has helped me to realize how to manage the present and the future. I reflect on the past only to recall the lessons

and all the trimmings, where you are surrounded by friends and family, adjourn to your favorite easy chair by the fire in the fireplace. Or wander off in a solo trek along a nearby logging road that brings back great memories of times with family and friends. Then, while you are settled back in the easy chair, or pausing on the hike and sitting on an old oak stump – reflect. Reflect briefly on the past, inventory all the good in your life and daydream about the things on your bucket list and the satisfaction that completing your wishes will bring you — Happy Thanksgiving!

There is little doubt that, if you are honest with yourself, doing an inventory of what you have to be thankful for will quickly make you realize just how fortunate you are. Considering your age and stage in life, just what does your personal inventory tell you? I’ll bet that the realization of all of the good things you have going on in your life will help you put behind you the negative things that we all let drag us down at times. 19 deer hunting seasons was 367,159 deer; 226,940 were antlerless deer, and 147,750 were bucks. Last year the buck kill was about 10 percent lower than the 2017-18 buck harvest, which produced 45 percent of the season’s antlered buck kill, but with cooperating weather, I wouldn’t be a bit surprised to see the new Saturday opener surpass that figure. Probably the second-best deer harvest will be the following Saturday when antlerless deer become legal targets. Speaking of deer harvests, I recently wrote a piece about piebald deer

Well, another local youngster has scored on the nice piebald buck pictured in this piece. Ten-year-old Lila Styer, daughter of Richard and Michele Styer, dropped the piebald buck pictured here. She got the deer at 7:30 in the morning with a crossbow while hunting with her dad from their treestand. Last year Lila bagged a nine-point buck. They plan to get a half-body mount. Congratulations to Lila.

I do my fair share of hunting on public lands where I already encounter too many other hunters, so it will be interesting to how things shape up on this Saturday opener. Also, with the increased harvest, how will that affect future regulations and changes? Will so many bucks be taken under the new regulations that hunting days will have to be dropped from other seasons to prevent overharvest? The overall deer take for the 2018-

season awards. Jackson earned a spot on the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Division II All-America Second Team last season. Jalen broke through as he was one of the premier tight ends in all of Division II football in 2018. The physical yet nimble Jackson hauled in 44 catches and 537 yards last season. Jackson became the first LHU football player to ever earn a spot on the AFCA All-America Team. Bravo Jalen. Props to these three Millionaires who are doing great things at their respective institutions. It is always great to see fine young lads excel at a high level. Congrats and the best of luck to our former All Staters. Continue to make us proud boys. Happy Thanksgiving. Cheers.
