Keep Your Eyes to the Skies

I

t is definitely the Most Wonderful Time of the Year. As in the Christmas classic sung by Andy Williams. I love when that song comes on the radio; it can’t help but to put some Christmas spirit in your step and a smile on your face. Give it a listen before you go shopping, to the grocery store or just plain out and about enjoying the winter wonderland we call home. That smile goes a long way in the world we live in. Please don’t be one of these Grinches that I run into way too often. They’re oblivious to their fellow man. The Grinches to the next level are the ones that always have their heads down. Their eyes and mind are buried in that electronic device that seems to control their every move. The only time they come up for air is to take a selfie to post on ‘hatebook’ or some form of social media. Then miraculously they go from Grinch to grin and look at me, I’m filled with holiday spirit. Immediately after hitting send, their head drops back down, and they return to Scrooge mode. Please put the cell phone in your back pocket and keep your eyes to the skies like Hall of Fame Coach John Zalonis taught me when making a tackle on the football field. See everything in this beautiful world that’s going on around you; greet everyone even if it’s just with a

simple smile. Coach Z’s teaching was intended so you kept your head up and could see what to hit and hit what you see. Then, hopefully, make a perfect form tackle. Most importantly, his teaching was and is still the safest and most effective way to play football. Never use your helmet as a tackling weapon. Not only can you injure the ball carrier, but you can also knock yourself dizzy with a concussion or much, much worse. From a football standpoint, if you drop that head, the ball carrier can make a move as your eyes are looking down. Then you end up tackling air as the ball carrier heads to the end zone. This is not only very embarrassing as a player but tends to get any coach a little upset. Thank you to Coach Zalonis, for not only teaching me proper tackling technique but also for the verbiage that can be applied to everyday life. In sticking with the gridiron theme — this year was a most successful season in local high school football. A tip of my Webb Weekly orange hunting cap to Coach Tom Gravish and his Jersey Shore Bulldogs who won the District IV 4A title and reached the Final Four in the State Tournament. An absolutely amazing season — the best in the history of the Orange and Black in Bulldogland.

The same tip of the cap to Muncy football Coach Sean Tetreault and his tribe of Indians. A district championship at the A level. The school’s first win in the PIAA State Tournament. A season to remember, and a Jim program in the midst Webb, Jr. of an Indian uprising. Last but definitely not least, a tip of my Loyalsock cap to Montoursville Head Coach JC Keefer and his Warriors. A District 3A Championship, a trip to the state quarterfinals and a 12-win season in the history books for the Blue and Gold. Now here’s the part everyone should take great pride in. As I meet, greet and interview the coaches and players each week for Touchdowns and Tailgates, I’m always impressed. Our area is blessed with outstanding head coaches, coordinators, and coaching staff. This does not just include the varsity; it follows suit down to the Middle School level. In many programs, the head coaches have things cooking all the way down to the junior/elementary football level. That is how outstanding programs are built for long-term success. Most importantly, I can tell you firsthand our area coaches are developing fine men, not just football players. It’s

LIONEL US STEAM LIONCHIEF® SET NEW! ®

not all about winning on Friday nights; it is about teaching, developing, and coaching up young folks to win and persevere at life. Football, by nature, is a game that provides the heat to mold not only bodies but also minds. It is the ultimate team sport that requires the efforts of everyone. Every week I’m so very impressed by the high school students I talk with. The best conversations I have are often off-camera, and not just with football players. It may be someone that supports the team by playing in the band, through cheer, or volunteers time to help out with the program. Folks, I can tell you this, our young people get it! They are intelligent, well spoken, and have their feet firmly rooted in God’s green earth. They do the extra work to be successful in the classroom and on the athletic field. Our young men and women are raising the bar with each passing year, not just here in the West Branch Valley but across Pennsylvania and the Nation. We are so truly blessed with our amazing young people. So as Coach Z taught me many moons ago, keep your eyes to the skies and stay focused on your target. This also includes parents, grandparents, teachers, clergy, coaches, and everyone working with our children. Keep it up, you are doing an outstanding job! God Bless America.

The Holidays Cometh…

W

ell, well, well — if it isn’t Christmas sneaking up on me once again. I swear, I am not a procrastinator by nature, and really, I’m further ahead in all things Christmas than I normally am, but it just takes me a little longer than some to find my holly jolly. I have actually started my Christmas shopping, I’ve completed one Christmas craft, and by the time you read this, I’ll have my Christmas tree. So, I guess all in all that’s not so bad for mid-December! Blaise Alexander Family Dealership’s Christmas Coloring Contest… Holy moly! We are getting a ton of entries for our Christmas Coloring Contest! Thank you so much to all the kids who entered! Cupcake, Merry, and Noel are still hard at work sorting and judging all the entries. Marshmallow, however, is a different story. She’s…well, the last I saw her she was wandering Candy Cane Lane looking for a snack and a place to nap. The others have given up and settled that she’s just not meant for the Coloring Contest life. She’s also been spotted at Brandon Park, but I heard she was caught trying to climb the Bandshell for a better view of the Holiday Market last weekend and was sent back to Santa’s house downtown for a stern talking to. In the meantime, Cupcake, Merry, and Noel have locked themselves in the conference room and are working hard. I think

anyway. To be honest the windows are totally covered in spray snow and glitter, so I don’t know for sure what is happening in there. I’m fairly sure they are subSteph siding on hot chocolate Nordstrom and gingerbread and I just hope that they aren’t buried under all the entries. We will be announcing the winners of the contest in the December 25th edition, so there is still time to get your entries in. If you need extra coloring pages stop in the office, or you can find printable copies on our website – webbweekly.com or on our Facebook page (it’s pinned to the top of the page). I also want to send another thank you to all of those supplying our great prizes! This year we have prizes from Flyworld, English Model Railroad, Elery Nau, Hooplas, Treasure Castle Playland, Harder Sporting Goods, AMC Theaters, Dairy Queen, Trout Pond Park and Faxon Bowling! You can drop them off in the office or mail them to: Blaise Alexander Chrismas Coloring Contest c/o Webb Weekly 280 Kane St., S. Williamsport, PA 17702

If you see Marshmallow, please send her our way. She’ll also answer to Cuddlecane, but really your best bet is to offer her gumdrops and cookies.

Also, as you are out and about this holiday season, please don’t forget about those less fortunate than yourselves. The Salvation

Army, American Rescue Workers, Toys for Tots, Family Promise, the Lycoming County United Way, the Central PA Food Bank and more can all use extra help during the holidays, so if you are able, please keep them in mind for Christmas donations. Tis the season of giving and there are a lot of people out there who could use an extra hand, not just at Christmas but throughout the year! While you are out shopping or having a holiday visit, and you happen to spot Marshmallow, can you please remind her that she has to be back in the office by the 23rd? Santa still needs her for last minute Christmas doings at the North Pole.

17th Annual Salvation Army Festival of Trees Friday, December 13 At Lycoming Mall By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

A

n opportunity to brighten the holiday landscape and at the same time, support the excellent work of the local Salvation Army takes place when the 17th Salvation Army Festival of Trees takes place this Friday, December 13, at 7 p.m. at the Lycoming Mall. This annual event is sponsored by the Lycoming Mall, Backyard Broadcasting, and Roan Real Estate (Mike Roan – auctioneer). Webb Weekly and the Williamsport Sun-Gazette are also key supporters. The folks at the Salvation Army thank all their sponsors and key supporters for all their support. Without their efforts, the annual Festival of Trees would not be successful. This year’s event has a total of 37 beautifully decorated trees with great incentives in which to bid. Trees can be seen at the Lycoming Mall — in the

storefront next to Victoria’s Secret. There are several new tree sponsors this year. There are also many that have supported the Festival of Trees for many years. A listing of all trees with incentives can be seen by going to The Salvation Army’s web page: www.salvationarmywilliamsport. org. Some of the new trees this year are Fink’s Paint Store, Legal InSites, Susquehanna Community Bank, Lycoming County Dairy Princess, and Raceway Self & Mobile Storage. Again this year, you can vote for your favorite tree online. Visit the Salvation Army web page (listed above), and you have an opportunity to vote for your favorite and help The Salvation Army raise needed dollars. Major(s) Donald and Paula Spencer would like to thank all those who support The Salvation Army’s Festival of Trees. “This fundraising event is especially important this year as our donations received thus far are down from previous years, but the need for help remains high,” Major Spencer

Over 180 families have received utility assistance to avoid shut-off, and 46 families received financial assistance for rent to avoid evictions. The Salvation Army provided 410 food baskets, 5,690 toys, and 1,375 clothing items during the 2017 Christmas season. Your dollars contributed to The Salvation Army are appreciated and valued. The Salvation Army ranks among the top 10 most trusted non-profit organizations in America. They use 83 cents for every dollar donated to provide direct services, and 90 percent of the donated dollars stay within our community.

7 • Webb Weekly December 11, 2019

told Webb Weekly. This is the third year that Kaufman’s Funeral Home has supported the Festival of Trees. Scott (Kaufman) states that ‘the auctions are fun and it is good to support such a worthwhile community organization. The Salvation Army is one of the leading community agencies that are able to meet individual and family needs. All funds raised remain local, and The Salvation Army values the dollars raised as they place value on each dollar received.” Janet Johns, the owner of Janet’s Floral, said, “The Salvation Army is our charity of choice, and we are happy to support the Festival of Trees each year’. Tony Perrotta, director of public relations and fund development for the local Salvation Army, said that Janet’s tree and incentives are beautiful each year and highly valued again this year. Janet’s Floral has been a supporter of The Salvation Army’s Festival of Trees for many years. From the diverse listing of those sponsoring a tree this year, the auction will have something for everyone; Penn State luggage to hand-painted ornaments to gift certificates from area businesses. The successful bidder not only receives the incentives but the trees and all the decorations.

Gazette and Bulletin December 13, 1936 Seven Firemen Injured When Millville Trucker Interfered With Engine

Compiled By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I

n responding to a fire alarm at 609 Wyoming Street at 3:19 o’clock yesterday afternoon, fire pumper No. 2 and seven firemen out of eight riding on the apparatus suffered injuries, when the pumper rammed into the side of a heavy truck laden with several tons of coal, at the interception of Washington Boulevard and Henrietta Street. Benjamin H. Witzeman, a member of No. 2 Company, suffered cuts on body, arms and limbs, and also suffered from shock, another member, Samuel Kulp, suffered seven cuts on his right knee, and John D. Stroup, cuts on the hand. These three firemen were given medical treatment. Four other firemen suffered minor injuries and continued on duty. The No. 2 engine proceeded on Washington Boulevard with its siren continuously sounding and as it approached

Henrietta Street a heavy coal truck driven by Dewy Temple of Millville, turned abruptly without signaling, from the south side of Washington Boulevard across to enter Henrietta. The fire apparatus was very close to the truck and driver Fred Snyder applied the brakes of the pumper but was unable to stop and hit the truck midway and forced it and the pumper onto the sidewalk and against an electric light pole, which was demolished. Driver Snyder bravely hung to the wheel and by quickly applying the brakes, saved his fellow firemen from further serious injury Fire Chief Michael Clark was following closely No. 2 pumper and coming to the scene of the accident, stopped his car and ran to the aid of his men. Then he ran to a nearby house and telephoned fire headquarters to call out pumper No. 7 to answer the fire alarm in place of Co. 2. Company No. 4 also answered this alarm.

blind and lame and deaf and raising the dead back to life – were temporary. The people he healed sooner or later got sick again and the people He raised from the dead died again. But when we are used by God’s Spirit to bring someone to faith in Jesus and they receive eternal life, that miracle is forever! There is no greater work accomplished on this earth than when a lost soul is reconciled to God through faith in the redemptive work of Jesus Christ! This promise also confirms what our hearts already know—that we were made for a purpose. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Being restored to purpose removes any sense of meaninglessness and fills us with the confidence that we will hear Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness.” Matthew 25:21 Promises Kept Jesus has already fulfilled His promises. Eternal life and holy purpose can be yours today. There is no need to wait or hope—the reconciled eternal and purposeful life is for now. Today is the day of salvation! Today is the day of purpose! What are you waiting for? Whoever Believes has Confidence!

To receive eternal life and purpose, Jesus asks us to believe, but He wasn’t referring to a level of belief that is devoid of trust. Without trust, belief hopes that something is true while keeping both feet firmly planted in doubt. Hope is where belief is stirred, but James recognized that belief without trust is dead. See James 2. Belief with trust is different. Trust allows us to move beyond hoping something is true to knowing something is true. Trust allows itself to fully rely on what it claims to believe. Have you placed your full trust in Jesus Christ to be your Savior and Lord? If so, then hope has blossomed into confidence! “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him.” I John 5:14-15 Jesus is coming again and it could happen at any moment – even before you finish reading this article. Does that statement cause you to experience anxiety or fear? It doesn’t need to. In fact, it can fill you with great anticipation! In Revelation 22:20 MSG, John responds to Jesus’ statement, “I’m on my way! I’ll be there soon!” by saying, “Yes! Come, Master Jesus!” John had confidence because he had placed his full trust in Jesus Christ. What about you?

and black jeans. For an unexpected look, layer a knit midi-dress under your slimmer fit shirt jacket, don a denim vest, then complete your look with water-resistant boots for these first few snowfalls. There’s just something about pairing dresses with more rugged pieces that feels low-key chic. For party looks, try a teddy-style coat over a festive velvet blazer, cocktail dress, and some heeled loafers. If you’re not so much into Sherpa fleece, try a toggle-style coat worn with a utility jacket and a graphic wrap dress with metallic ankle boots. If you want to bring a bit more drama to your holiday gathering, consider a caplet over a motorcycle jacket and vibrant red pants. When it comes to layering jackets, it’s about finding the balance between oversized and fitted pieces with necklines and closures that don’t compete against each other. Once you have the right garments, you can mix and match to come up with new combinations for all of your festive activities as winter rolls in.

a shearling-lined jean jacket that will bring additional texture into your look while also keeping you warm. A beige trench coat is a wardrobe staple. It’s a true classic, intended to pair well with just about everything. As winter starts to unfold, try layering your standard trench over a hoodie for running errands, then swap out the sweatshirt for a plaid puffy vest or gilet for your evening holiday shindig. Of course, you can’t go wrong with a trench for your work-wear, as it will provide a protecting layer over blazers and chunky cardigans. The best trench coats for layering are Macintosh styles with point collars and clean button fronts, as opposed to the double-breasted notch collar variety. Leave your London Fog trench to wear solo for the fall and spring. When the days are just starting to be chilly, but you’re still able to get outside, a wool shirt jacket is the perfect outerwear for weekend hikes. Buffalo plaid jac shirts can also look great for that trip to the Christmas tree farm paired over a sleek black activewear zip-up with thumbholes

hen the Allenwood Federal Corrections Complex opened in 1993, there were some concerned citizens that lived nearby. One of these was a feisty mother of seven, named Liz Steward, who lived about a mile away from the new facility. She had spent years in the 1970s and 80s wrestling with Lycoming County over their efforts to put in a landfill practically in her backyard. Her efforts, along with others, led to the eventual construction of a state-of-art sanitary resource management facility, which Lycoming County has today. So when Liz Steward saw this mammoth new prison just down the road from her home being constructed, she met with the officials there and asked how they intended to interact with the local communities. To the

credit of those original leaders at the Allenwood FCC, they designed one of the most active community relations boards in the federal prison system with Liz Steward, one of the founding members. This wonderful lady has sadly passed away, but the CRB she helped initiate has continued to meet quarterly for the past two and a half decades. At a typical meeting, there are management officials from the two prisons and penitentiary which make up the complex, along with community representatives from area township governments, the Lycoming County Resource Management System, the Lycoming Planning Department, the United Way, Geisinger Hospital, Muncy Prison, the Pennsylvania State Police, the list goes on and on. Not every institution is there every meeting. Some attendees are more regular than others; some contribute more actively than others. It is an

ment agencies. When the federal government went into a budget freeze last year that caused employees at the prison to miss a few paydays, the local food banks stepped up and provided assistance to get them through the crisis. But the prison gives back to the community as well. For over twenty years, the FCC Allenwood has allowed the public to enter the prison grounds for open house events at the historic Stone Church. The prison works diligently to maintain the church

and grounds. The Montgomery Area Historical Society is hosting a Christmas Candlelight Service at the Stone Church on Saturday, December 14th at 2 p.m. The church will be open at 1 p.m. with memorabilia on display. Entrance is the White Deer Golf Course entrance off of Rt. 15, following the signs past the gate. Federal employment has many advantages, and the prison is currently looking for a number of different positions. Information about the Bureau of Prisons and applying for posts can

be found on the website: bop.gov. Or you could check it out personally by attending a Job Fair to be held at the Training Center of Allenwood FCC on December 11th between 12-5 p.m. They are particularly seeking correctional officers, psychologists, physician assistants, medical officers, dentists, cook supervisors, and chaplains. Questions can be directed to the Human Resources Staff at 570-547-1990. Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. He can be reached by email: lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

I still have my old traditions with my new, and I want my kids to look back someday and say they loved their Christmas morning breakfast, too! I have to admit; they are so nice to just pull out of the fridge Christmas morning and pop right into the oven before our kids dig into their stockings from Santa. I have shared this recipe in my column before, but if you need it again, you can find it on my website at www.andreascountryhomecookin.com and search for Sausage, Egg N Cheese Maple Risers. As for all the others, they are in my cookbook! And GUESS WHAT? I am happy to say my cookbooks are here! I ordered more because so many of you See COOKIN on Page 26

he Philadelphia Phillies recently announced that their charity arm, Phillies, Charities, Inc., has awarded a $15,000 grant to Favors Forward Foundation of Lycoming County. The mission of Favors Forward Foundation is to provide a network of volunteers uniting their time, talent, and treasures to serve children and adults in Lycoming County facing life-changing hardships. merican democracy has a rich heritage and one that we woefully take for granted. Marvel for a moment that since 1900, only six countries in the world have NOT changed their form of government. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the insights of our Founding Fathers in crafting such an amazing document as the Constitution of the United States. That being said, some ideas have outlived their shelf life. One of these is the lame-duck session. It is not termed that, of course, it is simply the time between an election and when those elected take office. Originally, the time was based on the difficulty of travel in the 18th century. The date of the national election was to be the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, with the electees being sworn into office on March 4th of the following year. This was changed to January 3rd for senators and representatives and January 20th for president and vice president by the 20th amendment to the US Constitution. This was

adopted in January of 1933, motivated by the Great Depression. Five months was far too long for a ‘lame duck’ president to be in office when the country was trying to deal with a major economic crisis. We generally accept the two-month wait between election and oath of office of our elected officials the same way we accept anachronisms like Day Light Saving Time and Prevailing Wage laws. We hate them, but we’ve learned to live with them because no one has the wherewithal to do anything about them. This electoral anomaly is in full view to anyone attending the County Commissioner meetings during November and now December. It is hard not to notice

Scott Metzger was at that December 3rd meeting, but he still has to sit on his hands for another four weeks. Should not the new board be the ones making the decisions on the budget that they will have to live within the coming year? Should not the new board be making personnel decisions, especially those that will have far-reaching ramifications to county operations? November and December are important months in preparing for the coming year. Still, in practice, if the critical decisions are not made before election day in November, it is very awkward to make these decisions with lame-duck officials. This is not in any way to disparage the work of Jack McKernan. He has worked extremely hard in his position for these past four years. But the voters chose someone else, and it seems that their voice will not be heard as timely as it should. And this does not just apply to county government, either. Why do we wait for a new city mayor? Why are not all officials that are elected take office in the most timely way possible? Why? Because that is the law. So the ducks keep quacking, and the lions keep sleeping. Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. He can be reached by email: lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

the quiet tension behind the scenes due to the outgoing status of Commissioner Jack McKernan and the coming incumbent Commissioner Scott Metzger. The commissioners appear reluctant to make any major decisions, given that one-third of their board has been voted out of office. Scott Metzger comes to every meeting, even the work sessions, just as he has been doing for the past year now, and his presence is like a silent sentinel reminding them that a new partner is coming to the triad and he will certainly stir the pot. The duck was missing on Tuesday, December 3rd, work session, which caused something that I have not seen in four years of covering these meetings. There was one commissioner present — Commissioner Rick Mirabito. Commissioner McKernan was absent, and Commissioner Mussare was in “attendance” via telephone. Mirabito had the privilege of moderating this one-member meeting. (Note: this is permitted under the Sunshine Law, provided that all can hear the elected official that is on the phone and he or she, in turn, can hear those speaking in the meeting room. These requirements were fulfilled at the meeting). Do lame ducks make for lame meetings? Really, why the two-month wait?

Music, Magic and Miracles with the Williamsport Flute Choir

W

illiamsport is fortunate to have such varied musical groups to help ring in the holidays. The Williamsport Flute Choir will present their holiday concert at 2 pm on December 14 in the sanctuary of First United Methodist Church at 604 Market Street, Williamsport. The concert will feature the flute choir and several musical guests, vocalists, and friends and is under the direction of Rick Coulter. The Williamsport Flute Choir has been making music for several years. The group performs challenging pieces adapted from other great works and others written specifically for flute choirs. The unique instrumentation of the group is surprising to many first-time theatre goers, who may have no idea that multiple types of flutes exist. Most people know of the standard C-Flute and piccolo, but Williamsport’s group also features several alto and bass flutes, giving the ensemble a full-bodied sound. The year’s Christmas concert will feature some talented guests including percussionists Kathie and Mike Mitchell, Beveryly Schmidt on piano, Karl Ivers on guitar, Conrad Mailleue on string bass, and Jack Schmidt narrating a full telling of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Shelia Hornberger, a founder of the group, returns with friend Alex Burnette playing bass and contrabass flutes. The contrabass flute is

rarely seen in the area, is played standing up, and is twice the size of a bassoon. Peggy Morehart has been with the group since its inception. She says they are constantly challenging themselves with their musical choices and have developed into a joyful project over the years. “Every holiday concert in unique and this one adds old favorites with current tunes for all ages to enjoy,” says Morehart. Michele Mach has been a member for 5 years. Having learned to play the flute in a public school band program, she continued playing as a church musician for many decades. “Participation in the Williamsport Flute Choir is pure joy!” she says. “I love being challenged by more experienced players and have improved my skills by hanging around with this fun an talented group of ladies,” says Mach. “I’m really looking forward to our rendition of ‘Christmastime is Here’ from ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas’ and ‘Mary Did You Know?’ and the fun ‘Mele Kalikimaka.’” The Flute Choir is excited to be performing in the sanctuary of beautiful First Church in Williamsport. First Church is located at the juncture of Packer and Market Streets in Williamsport. The concert is FREE and open to the public, although donations are always accepted and appreciated. Fill your Saturday with song with an afternoon of magical music from the Williamsport Flute Choir on December 14.

Finding Your Life’s Purpose Part 1

W

he asked me if I had lost someone close to me at a young age. I told him that my father had passed away from cancer when I was ten years old. He then said that circumstances like that make our mortality a very real thing. Upon reflection, I realized I had been continuously thinking about a time limit on my existence and that it was a very tough way to go through life. This is why most people, those of us that are able, choose not to think about it. When researching literature for this article, I came across an almost unlimited number of articles related to finding one’s life purpose. This makes me think that maybe I am not unique in this quest to find deeper meaning. There was an article written by Mark Manson titled “7 Strange Questions That Help You Find Your Life Purpose.” While I don’t agree entirely with Mr. Manson, one idea in particular resonated with me. He remarked that many people, like myself, ask a question that is so large and impossible to comprehend, let alone answer, that

contemplating the cosmic significance of your life while sitting on your couch all day eating Doritos.” Instead, you should be taking action to discover what you are passionate about and what is important to you. In her article for Huffpost.com, titled “3 Unexpected Ways to Find Your Life Purpose,” Shannon Kaiser said that one of the things you will need to find your purpose is to break up with the “one”. By this, she means the idea that there is a single purpose to give our lives meaning. There are often

hat is the meaning of life? Why am I here? What is my life’s purpose? I’ll admit, these are questions that have haunted me my entire life. Some people can go through life without thinking of these big questions and are blissfully happy. They are able to go to work, live each day without major worry, and basically enjoy life without having to think too deeply. Bless you, if you are one of those people. Unfortunately, for me, this is not the case. In fact, ever since I was a child, these questions have kept me up at night. It has affected my relationships with my friends and family. It has cost me great business opportunities and affected my career decisions. Pondering my life’s purpose has even influenced my timeline for getting married and having children. Thank goodness most of these things have worked out. I was once having a conversation with a personal training client, and it took a serious turn. At some point,

we should change the question. He states that when people ask, “What should I do with my life?” or “What is my life purpose?” what they should be asking is, “What can I do with my time that is Dave important?” Bellomo Looking at your purpose from this perspective is much more manageable and less likely to drive you mad. As he says, “There’s no reason for you to be

Living Well…

The need to seek our purpose comes from a lack of passion. When you don’t feel connected to your life, you lack purpose and passion. To fix this, emptiness simply add more passion. To boil it down, remember this simple equation: Passion + Daily Action = Purposeful Life.” Finding life’s purpose is going to be different for everyone. We hear about people that travel the world with no real job, eating amazing food, doing amazing things, and are blissfully

can tell you with absolute certainty that some money is necessary, but happiness does not revolve around material possessions. What I have observed is that finding one’s own purpose includes at least four basic elements: 1.) What are you good at 2.) What makes you happy, 3.) What helps others, and 4.) Do your best. In part 2 of this article, I will go into greater detail about these four basic elements of finding your purpose and give you my “two cents” about finding meaning and adding value to this world.

happy, though this is much rarer than social media would have us believe. Most of us have to work for a living, and often the jobs are menial and not much fun. That is certainly OK, and it is much more noble to fulfill your responsibilities than it is to not show up for work or not pay your mortgage. Living a life of purpose may have nothing to do with how you pay your bills. vibrantly colored. That signature vibrancy is why many people would like to preserve their poinsettias to last beyond the New Year, which is possible with the right care. The following are some tips, courtesy of Mother Nature’s Network, Habersham Gardens, Oregon Live, and Phoenix Flower Shops, to keep poinsettias thriving past the holiday season. • Start with healthy plants that have full leaves, bracts and deep colors. • Poinsettias do best when the temperature is between 65 and 75 F. Temperatures below that or drafts from cold windows can cause leaves to drop. • Position the plant in a room that gets indirect sunlight for at least six hours per day. If direct sunlight can’t be avoided, diffuse the light with a sheer curtain. • Poinsettias need well-drained soil. Overwatering or allowing roots to sit in wet soil can cause the leaves to fall off prematurely. Water thoroughly only when the pot looks dry. In households with temperatures around 70 F, the plant should be watered about once a week.

• Fertilize the plant after the blooming season with a balanced, all-purpose fertilizer. • Try placing poinsettias in or near a bathroom, as they prefer high humidity. It may be possible to get poinsettias to rebloom next season. Allow the poinsettias to dry out a little more in the spring. In May, cut about four inches from each stem to produce a lush, full plant during the winter. The plants can be moved outside in June and during the summer, but keep them away from direct sunlight. tree.” The familiar lyrics of this tune are sung as part of Christmas caroling and holiday celebrations, reaching a crescendo each time singers belt out “five golden rings.” The song is an English Christmas carol that was written in 1720. While it references plenty of gift-giving, it’s easy to assume the song is about giving Christmas gifts. However, the 12 days in the song actually refer to the birth of Jesus Christ. The 12 days of Christmas, also known as the Twelvetide, refers to the festive Christian season that celebrates the Nativity of Jesus. In fact, the start of these days occurs on December 25 and extends until the evening of January 5th, the day before the Epiphany, known as Twelfth Night. Each day corresponds to a remembrance of different religious events or people. Christmas celebrants can

Most experts agree physical activity is an essential aspect of youth development that teaches teamwork, builds confidence and fuels academic potential. In fact, a lack of funding accounts for 47% of cuts

said. “This is one of the many reasons why I joined the Mission Tiger team - we’re not just giving kids the opportunity to play sports, we’re giving kids the opportunity to develop beneficial skills that can positively impact the future of today’s youth.” Consider these benefits of youth sports: * Teamwork: Sports teach kids the advantages of working together toward a common goal. The ability to collaborate with peers, including those outside a child’s immediate circle of friends, is a skill that provides benefits through adulthood. * Character: Learning how to accept wins and losses gracefully isn’t just good sportsmanship, it’s a life lesson. A playing field puts these lessons to use so kids

can practice empathy and other social interactions in a comfortable setting. * Fitness: Sports are a fun way to get kids moving, and this increased physical activity helps build healthy bodies and reduces the risk of diseases. From cultivating a healthy heart and lungs to helping prevent high blood pressure and, ultimately, heart disease, regular physical activity provides numerous health benefits. * Discipline: While free play has its place, kids also need structure and boundaries. Sports come with rules, and kids naturally learn through positive reinforcement (scoring points or winning a game) and consequences (getting a penalty or losing). * Academics: Studies reveal that physically

active children score higher on tests and are more likely to go to college, according to research published by The Aspen Institute. Sports help reinforce learning concepts and habits like repetition and problem-solving. Those skills, along with the sense of accomplishment that comes with learning, are transferrable to the classroom setting. Visit MissionTiger.com for more details about how you can help give kids a chance to play. For every box of Frosted Flakes you purchase, you can spark a $1 donation to DonorsChoose.org by uploading your receipt to Kellogg’s Family Rewards within 30 days of purchase. The initiative started with a $1 million commitment to DonorsChoose.org to fund projects big and small at schools in need. Professional athletes passionate about youth sports, including Olympian Julie Ertz, are teaming up with the program to help underfunded programs. The pro-soccer midfielder teamed up with Mission Tiger to help a school inspire its students’ dreams both on and off the field by donating new equipment, including soccer balls, cleats, shin guards and more. “Growing up, I learned numerous skills from sports, skills that applied not only to athletics but to my everyday life,” Ertz

n December 21, we will experience the “shortest day of the year,” which signals the first day of winter and provides an increasing amount of daylight each day until June 21, the “longest day of the year” and the beginning of summer. As Mother Nature keeps us in the grip of colder winter weather for the next several months, it just might be good timing to work on your culinary skills! Here, then, are a few recipes to hone your cooking of tasty game meat. Osso Bucco is a delicious supper dish served in numerous Italian restaurants and Beef Nahari is a very tasty breakfast dish served at “The Pelican,” a great Pakistani restaurant in Florida. In each case, the meat used is the beef shank cut crosswise into ½ inch or so slices. You can do the same thing using the lower leg section of a deer. With venison, you

can cut the legs into slices or keep them in 10” pieces. Deer Shank: 1 – Coat the shanks with flour and your favorite rub or seasoning, which can simply be salt and pepper, if you prefer. Use a bit more seasoning than normal since much of it will fall off during the browning process. 2 – Heat a thin layer of olive oil in a medium-hot cast iron skillet and add the shanks, browning evenly on all sides which adds a richer color and makes it taste better. 3 – Place the shanks in a slow cooker (medium heat) or a Dutch oven (low heat). Add your favorite chopped vegetables, a pack of Lipton onion soup mix, and beef stock and red wine – enough to barely cover the shanks and vegetables. Cover and let cook for about 6-8 hours, checking for doneness at about 6 hours. When done, the meat will fall off the bone. Serve with white rice, wild rice or baked potato.

– seeded and diced, 1 Tbs. dried oregano leaves, 2 Tbs. chili powder, 1 Tbs. ground cumin, 1 tsp. cayenne pepper, 4 cups fresh tomatillos – skin removed, quartered, 1 cup fresh cilantro leaves – chopped and salt and pepper to taste. 1 – Heat oil in a large stockpot over medium-high heat, add meat and brown evenly. Drain off any fat or liquid rendered during browning. 2 – Add 1 ½ quarts chicken broth and any additional broth or water to cover meat and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, for 2 hours or until meat is tender and breaks apart, but doesn’t fall apart with moderate finger pressure. Drain the liquid from the stockpot. 3 – Add remaining quart of chicken stock and all other ingredients except cilantro. Simmer until peppers are very tender, about 45-60 minutes. Stir in cilantro and season with salt and pepper to taste. This recipe will yield 8-10 servings and will easily convince those who “just don’t care for game meat” that, when cared for properly in the field and properly prepared in the kitchen, game meat can be extremely tasty!

The breakfast “Beef Nahari” dish is served with a bit of rice and next to two eggs, cooked as you like them. The meat is cooked slowly with a blend of spices including cayenne pepper to “kick it up a notch!” It is delicious and the extra sauce is wonderful over the eggs. Hunting for feral hogs can be fun, and can quickly turn to exciting and dangerous in short order. When the hunt is over, there are numerous options as to how to best prepare the meat for the dinner table. Keep in mind that the meat of an 80 – 100+ pound sow will be much tastier than that of an old 300 pound boar with big tusks! Here’s a recipe for a flavorful Southwestern stew that can be topped with shredded cheese or chopped spring onions, and served with warm hearty sourdough bread. Wild Hog Chili Verde: The ingredients are: 3 pounds (about 6 cups) of wild hog shoulder and/or hindquarter cut into 1-inch pieces, 3 Tbs. olive oil, 2 ½ quarts chicken broth, 2 cups yellow onion – diced, 8 garlic cloves – minced, 2 green bell peppers – diced, 4 Anaheim peppers – diced, 3 jalapeno peppers

I suppose there are those posted. The plan was to jump still some hunting camps that utilize deer and push them into the waiting deer drives, and there are still some hunters where they would hopefully who trek through the woods and get some shooting. I’m sure drives stand for a spell before moving to a resulted in some success, but all too new location, but treestands have often you found yourself shooting become the new norm. Treestands at deer that were badly spooked and come in a variety of forms; the portable stand that you carry out like often in a dead run. I didn’t say, “go to a tree. Of course, there is also the up into a treestand,” I said to take up third category of stands; this stand a stand or in other words, stand next looks like a miniature cabin erected to a tree. Back then, treestands were on four high posts. This stand often pretty much non-existent, or maybe has heaters, seats or chairs, shelves,

or where someone grants permission to hunt their private property. In this situation, I often find myself reverting back to my old walk and stand for a while approach — these days often referred to as “still hunting.” In still hunting, you actually do move but very slowly and deliberately-you don’t want to rustle leaves and snap twigs. Obviously, extremely dry leaves make for tough still hunting. Make sure you move in a direction that does not allow your scent to spook deer ahead of you. You also stop frequently and scan the entire area. I look for

any slight movement, not necessarily a whole deer. During the Special Firearms Antlerless Only season, my wife and I utilized still hunting techniques. Hardly an hour after we entered the woods, I caught sight of deer legs moving and then the whole deer. My wife dropped her deer at about 40 yards, and a short time later, I dropped mine. While I certainly make use of treestands and being sedentary when possible, I still find the good old still hunting technique can still be effective.

Still hunting continues to remain a successful way to hunt.

and windows that open and close. For the most part, today’s hunters have become much more sedentary, and hunter movement in the woods seems to be far less. This too could be a factor when we hear hunters complaining of seeing less deer than they used to-no doubt since there are far less hunters moving about to keep deer moving. I too choose to be much more sedentary in my approach especially during the archery season but not so during the rifle deer seasons. Not being blessed with private hunting property I often hunt on public land

50-yard line. Only the television both has that prime location. The Cowboys magnificent home was completed in May, 2009 at a cost of 1.3 billion dollars and although it is often referred to as ‘Jerry’s house’ it is actually owned by the City of Arlington. The City paid $325 million, while Jones pays the rest including $2.25 million a year to ‘rent’ the stadium with a lease of 30 years. In case you’re interested the deal also includes: • Jones sold the stadium naming rights to AT&T for 1.2 billion for which he has to pay the City 5% per year (capped at $500,000). • The Cowboys are required to play all their home games at the stadium for the 30-year lease period. • Jones pays for all operating costs and receives all revenue, presumably for all events held at the stadium. • He is required to pay $500,000 a year for 33 years for youth sports charity. • After the lease ends, the Cowboys have the option to purchase the complex from the City for $100 million and they would receive credit for rent paid. All told it was a great trip. We toured the Texas Book Depository, where JFK was killed, many fun and interesting shops and took a day-trip to Waco to visit the Magnolia Market and Baylor University. Indeed it was a fun family time together. If only I would have had the foresight to buy a new bucket while I was there. Thanks to those Cowboys I definitely need a new one!

wonderful memories but on this occasion mine surely had a hole in it. I know that there have been several local folks who have made that same trip to Dallas to see a game. If anyone out there is contemplating a similar trip make sure your plans included taking a VIP Tour of AT&T Stadium. Nestled between Dallas and Fort Worth in Arlington, Texas the stadium tour is well worth your time and dollars. The cost is $32.00 with a Senior and child rate of $27.00. The tour itself took almost two hours and included many behind-the-scenes places you wouldn’t otherwise have the opportunity to see. Included were the locker rooms of the Cowboys and the Dallas Cheerleaders, the press box, owner Jerry Jones’ office area, luxury suites, the Cotton Bowl archives area, a variety of meeting rooms, remarkable architectural features and the opportunity to set foot on the playing field surface. During about fifteen minutes on the field folks were permitted to take all kinds of pictures, including one adventurous fan who captured the moment on the goal post. I personally found the press box tour quite interesting and informative. Unlike most every other stadium I have visited Jerry Jones chose to locate the press box in the end zone corner of the field. It was explained that his reasoning was that the media covering the game was being paid to do their job and Jones was providing them with free food and beverage while doing same. The press box is still posh and accommodating, it’s just not on the
