Not So Democratic Party By Jim Webb Jr.
T
he Inquisition of President Trump is absolutely pathetic. I have never seen a less Democratic procedure take place in our Nation’s Capital. Democracy and the current Democratic Party couldn’t be any greater of a contradiction. The current House Judiciary hearing has absolutely nothing to do with what they claim are two impeachable offenses, and everything to do with the Democrats and their hatred and despise of President Trump. Can you imagine the infinite number of impeachable qualifying illegalities that have been committed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi during her infamous political career? I’ve written often that the everyday hardworking Democrats need to take their party back. That it has reached the point of beyond liberalism to socialism bordering on communism. This has been on full display during Mr. Adam Schiff ’s beyond kangaroo impeachment proceedings. Besides, we all know what the final result is going to be. The House Judiciary Committee will find President Trump completely intolerable. They then will move the impeachment process forward by turning it over to the House of Representatives for an impeachment vote. It then requires a simple majority — 51%, to impeach the President. Obviously, the Democratic heavy house will find the President impeachable. The impeachment process then travels to the Senate, where it requires a two-thirds — 67% supermajority vote.
There’s no way on God’s green earth the Republican-controlled Senate is going to allow this to happen, nor should they. So at the end of the day, it’s all a big charade about nothing, a great big political power play of poppycock at the expense of the American taxpayer. I came across an article written by long-time educator and football coach, Mr. Charles Ackerman. I have known the man almost my entire life and have the utmost respect for him. I don’t believe we’ve ever talked about politics until I asked him if I could share the column he penned. Mr. Ackerman and I always talk football when we see each other. Back when I was knee-high to a grasshopper going to Central Elementary School, Coach Ackerman was the head coach at Southside. He was the first head coach I knew by name and wanted to play for growing up. Even before Joe Pa at Penn State and Chuck Noll in Pittsburgh. I can’t thank him enough for sharing his football and life knowledge with me over the years. For my money, his editorial entitled Liberalism is the most accurate, straight to the point, well-written summation of what the current Democratic Party has become. Liberalism By Charles Ackerman Liberalism, progressivism, neo-Marxism, statism, neo-fascism — the core of today’s Democratic Party — one day will be seen as the ghastly abomination they’ve become, in my opinion. Their moral depravity, corruption, confusion, et al., introduced into America, will falter. Liberalism has metastasized to
every facet of American culture. It’s become a criminal enterprise comprised of the federal judiciary, the State Department, the FBI, and the Justice Department, the Hollywood and entertainment degenerates with the morality of alley cats, indoctrinators masquerading as college professors, socialist education leaders, thug union leaders in bed with neo-Stalinists, environmental extremists propagating snake oil theories, and a lot of junk science, racehustling civil rights opportunists, anarchists desiring to destroy America, a political class of demagogues lusting for power and authority over our lives, a shameful and shameless left-wing, media espousing the pro-big government propaganda as they advocate for the Democrats. The left has seen to it, I believe, that criminals have more rights than crime victims. They continually demean law enforcement, which strives to protect us. They’ve allowed junk lawsuits to clog our courts and created thought crimes, euphemistically called “hate crimes.” Anti-gun liberals want to confiscate law-abiding citizens’ guns as soon as they can. Most urban centers, Chicago, e.g., have become bastions of violence and murder. The left has created sanctuary cities where illegal aliens can avoid federal criminal prosecution. The left has denigrated our Constitution by using the courts to make law rather than abide by the legislative process or the amendment process as prescribed by our Constitution. Effete leftists on the Supreme Court would like to make our Constitution like, or on par with, or even subservient to some foreign constitutions, in my opinion. Free speech is virtually disappearing from many college campuses as leftist professors and administrators force politically correct
speech upon students, in my view. In most urban schools, students barely able to read are passed on to the next grade or allowed to graduate. Graduation rates are appalling, drop-out rates are disgracefully high, and U.S. schoolchildren are barely able to compete with comparably aged school kids worldwide in science and math. Now we’re witnessing a major scandal wherein students’ parents are paying huge sums of money to get their children (who don’t measure up) into some of our finest universities. However, our kids rank right at the top in self-esteem and are becoming quite proficient at putting prophylactics on bananas while blindfolded. So at least we feel good about ourselves and are learning some “valuable life lessons.” Soft- and hard-core pornography permeates nearly every home in America with TV or a computer. Our unborn are being slaughtered at the altars of pro-choice. Under liberals, foreign and military policies are muddled and confused. Obama stopped defensive missile systems for our Eastern European allies, made deep cuts in military budgets and blamed it on sequestration, stopped numerous new weapons systems, destroyed (unilaterally) large numbers of our nukes, cut our Naval forces to pre-World War II levels. The Iran Nuclear Deal, which Hillary, John Kerry, and Obama negotiated, was an absolutely atrocious agreement. Liberals allowed illegal, uneducated criminal, often diseased immigrants into the United States. They seem to prefer open borders so they can expand their voter base and change the demographic make-up of our nation, in my opinion. I think they believe we’re idiots. We’re not! God Bless America.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas
W
ith candy canes and silver lanes that glow… Around here that ‘silver lane’ most definitely is Candy Cane Lane! The perfect place — in my humble opinion — to take a walk in a Winter Wonderland! A local tradition for over 60 years, Candy Cane Lane is a yearly must-do for so many people in the area. It is definitely on my yearly Christmas bucket list. Actually, I generally go through several times before Christmas. I like to take the long way home from work and cut through Duboistown for a quick trip through before heading home for the evening. But there’s nothing quite like heading out after dinner and listening to Christmas music while making the slow climb up the hill — unless you drive a stick shift! It’s always entertaining to hear people talk about their favorite displays too! The workshop at the top of the hill? The ice skaters at the
bottom? No matter what, it’s always an amazing way to spend a little time Steph to help raise your Nordstrom Christmas spirit! If you really want to make an adventure of it, grab some hot chocolate and your walking shoes and walk up and down Summer Street. Driving is nice, but it’s really a perfect Christmas experience to walk Candy Cane Lane and see the lights and displays up close. And if you don’t believe me that walking Candy Cane Lane can be Christmas magic, just read Andrea McElroy’s story on page 24. She will for sure change your mind! If you have a last minute wish list to get to Santa, he will be visiting Candy Cane Lane this weekend! He’ll be out and about on Saturday, Sunday and on Christmas Eve from 6:15 p.m. until around 9:00 p.m. Be sure to catch him before he heads
back to the North Pole! Sleigh bells may be jingling, but I am ever the Christmas procrastinator, I’m hoping that by the time you read this, I will be ready for Christmas. Really, really hoping. Some day I’m going to get myself together and have everything done, wrapped and ready to go early — but today is not that day. Tomorrow ain’t lookin’ good either. To be honest I totally forgot about wrapping anything until I just wrote it. My Christmas to-do list is still fairly lengthy, but it happens every year and every year I manage to pull it together — I’m sure I’ll be fine. Totally fine. On a totally unrelated note, if you know anyone who specializes in finishing Christmas shopping, wrapping, cleaning, and grocery shopping for people, maaaaaybe send me their number? Asking for a friend! But seriously, I hope you are all enjoying this last week before Christmas. Enjoy the hustle and bustle and all things merry and bright! It’s a busy time of year, but always worth it!

ho knew that an idea generated at a simple neighborhood party in DuBoistown in 1957 would give rise to one of this area’s most special and enduring Christmastime institutions? That special institution is Candy Cane Lane, located on Summer Street and Spring Street in the borough of DuBoistown. There are 14 homes involved along Summer Street, as well as several in the area known as “the DuBoistown Heights.” “We never dreamed that this would still be going on for more than 60 years,” Martha Kropp, one of the group of neighbors on Summer Street that founded this Christmastime institution, told Webb Weekly. “It’s a lot of work, but it is worth it to see the smiling faces that come and see this every year.” Candy Cane Lane was born in a time in America where neighbors and neighborhoods were closer together and where everyone looked out for one an-

other and felt a real sense of community and where neighbors were cherished friends as well as neighbors. “Those of us who lived on Summer Street were a pretty tightly knit neighborhood that did a lot of things together, including having neighborhood picnics,” Martha said. “At one of these picnics, the 16 families living in the neighborhood thought that it would be a nice idea to really decorate our houses big during the upcoming holiday season of 1957. Erma Fullmer was the real sparkplug behind the idea. Each neighbor chipped in about $10 for the cost of buying lights, and we each would be responsible for the cost of the electricity. In addition to lights, we added things such as a Nativity scene, toy soldiers, snowmen, elves, Santas and reindeer, and of course, candy canes. We got a lot of our stuff at a good price when the old Tri-State went out of business in the early 70s. We never had any idea that it would grow to be such a big thing and become a Christmas institution in this area and help people to make DuBoistown well known as a major Christmas-

they didn’t. In a related matter, he said that during the last several years, Cable Services have used their bucket trucks to help put up the street lighting, which has been of great help to this magnificent light show. One of the more interesting aspects to Candy Cane Lane is the actual handing out of candy canes who children to come to view it. “The DuBoistown Volunteer Fire Company helps with the cost of the candy canes that are handed out,” Craig said. “We give out between 5,000 and 10,000 candy canes in five weeks. “Additionally, DuBoistown’s fire police, along with fire police from throughout the area, help out with traffic control.” Some of the original families that helped get Candy Cane Lane started include Edmund and Erma Fullmer, Paul Fullmer and his wife Miriam, Donald and Shirley Fullmer, Dale and Shirley Seese, Harold and Martha Kropp, Charlie and Vince Maneval, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Smith, Ralph Thornton and Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McNutt Sr., just to name a few. These and other later families have provided a loving and living legacy that helps to literally and figuratively light up the Christmas season for the thousands of people who visit the special magic place that is Candy Cane Lane.

time destination.” There was only one blip during the history of this fine Christmas tradition, and that came in 1973 during the Energy Crisis precipitated by the Arab oil embargo that year in which there was no Candy Cane Lane, but she said things returned to normal the following year. For Martha’s son, Craig, Candy Cane Lane has been a part of his entire life. “This truly is a multi-generational thing at all levels,” Craig said. “There have been multiple generations of the families involved in this who put it on, and there are multiple generations of families that have been coming out to see this for years and years.” He believes that Candy Cane Lane helps to spark a strong sense of nostalgia in people who long for a simpler time when things were friendlier, and a respect and love for the Christmas season was more apparent. He said it helps evoke a longing for those times and gives people, even for a brief time, a leap back into those more treasured and simpler times. According to Craig, the type of lighting has changed, though. Now a lot of lights are LED lights, which require less electricity, which of course helps with the electric bill. He said many people asked if PPL gives them a break on the cost of the electricity, and he said that

Too Sick to Go to School? By Olufunke Oladejo, MD, MPH Pediatrics, UPMC Susquehanna

f your child isn’t feeling his or her best, should you definitely keep him or her home from school? After an illness, when is it okay for your child to return to school? As a parent, you know your children best. You also likely have a sense about when your child just doesn’t feel well enough to actively participate in school. Trust your instincts. But, also consider that there are times when it’s not a clear cut decision. What are some basic guidelines? The American Academy of Pediatrics
recommends that you answer a few basic questions before you send a child who doesn’t feel well to school. Does your child have a fever? A fever is a temperature of 101ᵒ F and above, and indicates that the child should stay home. Does your child feel well enough to participate in classroom activities and instruction? If he or she seems too sick, too tired or has symptoms that would be distracting to either themselves or others in the class, her or she should stay home. Do you think your child could be contagious to other children? If he or she has symptoms of pink eye, flu, strep throat, vomiting, diarrhea or other illnesses as-

sociated with a fever, you should keep the child at home. Minor illnesses, such as a runny nose, occasional cough, mild sore throat, mild tummy aches or a slight headache, usually are not enough to keep your child home as long as you do not answer yes to any of the three questions above. Lice is another common problem that does not require that the child be kept home, provided that he or she is has received an appropriate treatment. If you do send your child to school with a minor illness, make sure the school has a contact number so that administrators can reach you if there are concerns about his or her condition. After you’ve kept a child home from school, your next decision is when to allow him or her to return. Generally, your child may go back to school after he or she is free of a fever for more than 24 hours as long as he or she is feeling well enough to participate in classroom activities. Also, ensure that he or she is free of the fever without the assistance of fever-reducing medicines, like ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Do not give aspirin to your child unless directed to do so by your health care provider. More specific criteria for returning to school include: If your child is taking an antibiotic for an infection, it is usually okay to return 24 hours after the first dose. This includes treatments for strep throat and pink eye. If your child had diarrhea, he can return when stools are starting to be formed, or your healthcare provider says it is okay. If your child has been vomiting, he or she
can return if the child is able to eat breakfast that morning and is without a fever or diarrhea. A child with an ear infection can return to school when he or she is without a fever for greater than 24 hours and not complaining of moderate-to-severe pain. Ear infections are generally not contagious. Always check with officials at your child’s school to see if the administrators have any specific criteria for returning to the classroom. Remind your child that the best way to prevent illness from spreading is with good hand washing habits after playing, before eating, after using the bathroom and after sneezing or coughing. Even with everyone’s best efforts of hand washing and keeping children at home who are contagious, most viral illnesses are spread before a child shows any symptoms. If you have any questions or concerns about when your child should return to school or may need treatment, call your healthcare provider for advice. Dr. Olufunke Oladejo sees patients at SH Pediatrics, UPMC Williamsport Regional Medical Center, 700 High St., 9th Floor, Williamsport. She earned her medical degree from University of Ibadan, Oyo, Nigeria, and her Master of Public Health from Harvard University School of Public Health, Boston, Mass. She completed residencies in pediatric medicine with University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria, and New York Medical College, New York. Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.
awrence Morgan Kelley, Williamsport’s proud contribution to the AllAmerican list, whose pigskin heroics provided the most glorious chapter in Yale’s gridiron lore, hauled down his house, as he accepted the John H. Heisman Trophy as the outstanding college football player of 1936. As 750 banqueteers, among them his mother and father honored him at the presentation ceremony, Kelley picked up the ball and scored the winning touchdown of the luncheon with his wit. “Fellow Rotarians…” he began as the audience rolled with laughter and kept on rolling. “I represent only the voice of the Yale team — as the press would have it.” “Football is a big business and the press made it so it seems there is nothing the press can’t do. Why they even put a halo on the Fordham line

Kelley’s spirit pervaded the presentation ceremony and luncheon. Coach Raymond “Ducky” Pond of Yale, said that in 1933 when Kelley was a freshman, Mal Stevens, then Eli coach, told him Kelley was sure to become one the greatest passers in football.” “I didn’t believe him then, but he was right,” said Coach Pond. “Kelley was more than an All-American football player, He was a fine leader, had gobs of color and was a great crowd pleaser with ability to rise to the heights when it meant the difference between defeat and victory.”

The benefits include a faster recovery time, less pain, and a quicker return to normal day-to-day activities. Many robotic assisted hernia repair patients go home the same day of their surgeries.”

Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen had announced in August of 2018 that by the 2020 election, all fifty states were to have ballots that could be audited. The Trump Administration has been seriously concerned about voter fraud since 2016, and though some see these concerns as a red herring, the evidence points to a continuing problem. Over a 20-year-period, Pennsylvania Department of Motor Vehicles officials have allowed thousands of noncitizens to register to vote, and many have actually voted. The Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) forced Allegheny County election officials to disclose hundreds of pages detailing how noncitizens were regularly offered voter registration by government employees and third-party drives, despite language barriers
and clear understandings as to what they were signing. At least 27 percent of noncitizens cast at least one ballot prior to removal and noncitizens re-

COUNTY HALL main registered for an average of six years before they were removed. A press release from PILF President and General Counsel J. Christian Adams stated, “Noncitizens have voted in Pennsylvania because Motor Voter registration is broken. For decades, unassuming immigrants were invited to break the law systematically while citizens suffered the consequences of vote dilution. Pennsylvania needs a comprehensive election integrity solution, and Allegheny County clearly demonstrates what is at stake if the problem isn’t fixed.” So, from Washington to Harrisburg back to Williamsport, Director of the Office of Voter Services Forrest Lehman presented a request at the work session of the County Commissioners on Tuesday, December 10th. Though Director Lehman was only requesting funding for additional scanners for the Clear Ballot system, it opened up the can of voter fraud worms. With great solemnity, Commissioner Tony Mussare stated that free elections in our country are a sacred right and that he was greatly concerned that there are threats against it. This began the discussion that suddenly
became extremely philosophical, with Commissioner Mirabito even reflecting back to the Founding Fathers and speculating about the inherent good and evil of people. The crux of the issue came down to finding the balance between ensuring that barriers to voting are removed to ensure fairness in the voting process, and at the same time protect the voting franchise. It was not settled during that work session on December 10th, nor should we have expected it to be. Our republic has labored over gerrymandering, disenfranchisement, intimidation, and vote-buying since its inception. The 12th, 14th, 15th, 17th, 19th, 23rd, 24th, and 26th amendments to the US Constitution are all related to elections and voting. And of course, do we need to be reminded that voter interference by Russia was the original impetus to the Democratic Party’s House of Representatives investigations into President Trump? Commissioner Mussare has every right to be greatly concerned. We all should be. Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. He can be reached by email: lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

ow do most folks in Lycoming County get information about their region? The local daily newspaper has been suffering a shrinking readership and subscriptions for some time now. Newspaper circulars in
restaurants and grocery stores have some local items, generally revolved around school activities, sporting events, or award presentations. Webb Weekly has a unique niche - a free newspaper available in print and online, featur-
New York City, but then wanted to spread her wings. She decided to head west to take a job with a lobbying firm in New Mexico. She loved the open spaces of the American West; after a year, she found that she missed journalism, so in 2015 she found herself back in Williamsport, taking a job with the Sun-Gazette. In the fall of 2018, Anne sat down with me and discussed an idea she had. She envisioned an in-depth local news and cutting-edge multi-media coverage type website, especially focused on young folks such as herself. I

loved the concept but honestly admitted to her that my skepticism was high. She had no financial backing, no staff outside of herself, and wanted to appeal to a demographic that had no money! Yet what Anne lacked in resources, she more than made up for in sweat equity. Despite all the difficulties, On the Pulse (onthepulsenews.com) was launched on January 19th of this year. This 28-year-old journalist, videographer, and editor has created an amazing online Lycoming County news outlet. Obviously aimed at a millennial audience, the quality has caused those of us on the senior side of life to find it a wonderful source of up-to-date information on Lycoming County. Reiner’s short but informative articles and riveting videos have covered everything from local elections to life flight crews, from homelessness to human trafficking, from business startups to Big Sisters. She pulled out of ex-Congressman Tom Marino, fascinating details about his relationship with Donald Trump, his battle with kidney cancer, and his future plans. It is astounding how much Anne can pack into a five-minute interview. She is a one-man band, conducting
the interviews, doing the filming and editing, then posting on the website. Still, one month from its first anniversary, On the PULSE has had 150,000 video views, 71,000 website views, and 1,400 Facebook likes. With the wind in her sails, Anne is setting her sights in the coming year to expand the video production, begin publishing a local news podcast and build a connection with local colleges in the Greater Northcentral region. There is a chance for the local populace to become an active part in this exciting, entrepreneurial effort. On the PULSE will be launching its 2020 Kickoff Fundraiser on January 10th from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Covation Center, 217 W. 4th Street in Williamsport. Four Friends Winery will provide each guest with free wine tasting, and there will be lots of good food. General admission tickets are $25/each, and business sponsorships range from $250 to $500. If interested in attending, contact info@onthepulse.com. And full disclosure here, yours truly has been privileged to be one of the speakers at this event. I wouldn’t miss it for the world! This was taken at Purcell’s Amusement Park in South Williamsport on Rt. 15 in August of 1953. On the right is a ride called the octopus. Behind me is the Ferris wheel and on the left is the merry-go-round. There were many small stands for souvenirs and food and also a picnic area. We could also go swimming at Mountain Beach which was directly behind the park. Submitted By ~ Martin Hula, Montoursville

not himself. Like he had ants in his pants or something. We continued up to the top where Minnie, Mickey, Goofy, Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the Live Manger Scene were all there to greet us! “I didn’t know they would all be here tonight?! I thought they only did this Friday and Saturday nights?” Chris said. I was excited! This was the greatest even though he didn’t seem thrilled. Candy Cane Lane was double-sided traffic and not a bare spot to be seen on the road. Once we reached the top, we started heading back down, and we got right across from my favorite house. Second from the top on the right, all in white lights. He said, “Wait a minute.” I turned to him, and he asked me to hold his cup. All of the sudden, he got down on one knee and asked me to marry him. I couldn’t believe it! My hot stud muffin was asking me to marry him at my happy place! Of course, I said, “YES!” and all of the sudden, everyone cheered, including Minnie, Mickey, & Goofy! Cars were beeping, and people were yelling out of their car windows “Congratulations!!” I couldn’t believe it! I had to get to the car to see that bad boy! Christmas lights just didn’t give me enough light to see that ring! The dome light went on, and I gasped. What a gorgeous ring! What a magical night! I had to go over to show

you don’t have to tell me twice! Let’s do it!” He made a pit stop to the Dunkin Donuts drive-thru for hot chocolate because he thought it would be a nice touch to looking at the lights. Man, was he thinking of everything! We drove up and down almost every street until we ended up on Summer Street. Now, if y’all aren’t familiar with Summer Street, we need to have a little chat. It’s only the best street on the face of the earth at Christmas! My happy place. Candy Cane Lane! The road I could drive up and down 467 times a night and never want to stop. I LOVE it!! Now, let me just put this out there, it was a measly 7 degrees out. Like, I am talking bitterly cold. He pulls the car over at the bottom of Summer Street, looks at me and says, “Would you like to walk up Candy Cane Lane?” I think I just looked at him with this dumb look on my face. My mind saying, “Do you know how cold it is out there? Are you crazy?” “I mean, yeah, I guess! You never want to walk up when it’s 50 degrees. But yea, let’s do this on a bitterly cold night and freeze our faces off,” I said. I guess this is why he told me to dress nice and warm. Even though it was cold, it was still picture perfect! The hot chocolate kept our one hand warm, as our other hands were holding each other. We got about halfway up, and he started acting

my Grammy Perry, who lived right on Riverside Drive immediately. I was so excited I couldn’t contain myself. I don’t even remember it being 7 degrees anymore! The night was so perfect. I will never forget this night as long as I live. My parents knew. His parents knew. He did it on a Sunday so all the extra people wouldn’t be there, but little did he know they would all become part of our story. Every year after that, on December 19, we go out to eat at the Olive Garden, go to Dunkin Donuts to get hot chocolate and walk up Candy Cane Lane just as we did on that magical night. Now, we have a five-year-old little girl and a ten-year-old boy who look forward to this every single year. It’s a tradition we will never give up. This year will be 15 years we have done it. It’s still just as magical. I love that we get to relive that night every year. So this Thursday night, you know where we will be! I am so happy to be able to share this with you all. If you haven’t ever walked up Candy Cane Lane, you should. It’s amazing taking it all in. Thanks to all of you on Summer Street, who make December so magical and unique for many of us. And for giving us the perfect setting on a night, we will never forget.

BOOKWORM open presents when you know they’re full of clothes? If it was cold outside and you’d outgrown your things — as in “The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood” by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve, illustrated by Ellen Beier — you know which you’d choose. Eddie needed new boots. Virginia needed a new coat, too, but they knew the rules: as the children of the village’s Episcopal priest, they got last pick when the boxes came from the folks back east to the children on South Dakota’s Rosebud Indian Reservation. In this classic book, re-released for a new audience, it was time for a little Christmas magic... Chances are, you know what Christmas is — or do you? In “A Very Fiona Christmas” by Richard Cowdrey, the Cincinnati Zoo’s most famous hippo is celebrating her first Christmas season. Fiona’s ready to have fun in the snow with her friends; she absolutely loves seeing shiny, flashy, decorations; and she’s eager to learn about Christmas but she doesn’t quite understand it. What is Christmas, anyhow? Where can she learn the answer? If you love seeing Fiona online, this is a book you’re going to love, too.
Finally, if your family observes Advent, then make a new tradition with “How Winston Delivered Christmas” by Alex Smith. When Oliver puts his letter to Santa in the mailbox, he hopes that Santa will pay close attention to what’s in it. But the letter escapes, and it’s found by a small mouse named Winston, who knows that if it doesn’t get to Santa on time, one little boy will be disappointed on Christmas morning. That can’t happen, so Winston decides to go to the North Pole, where he can personally give Oliver’s letter to the Jolly Old Elf himself. This book makes a perfect count-down to Christmas, with stories for every day of Advent as well as activities your child can enjoy. Also included: end pages with more classic Christmas favorites, songs, poems, and reminders for next year. “Santa’s Secret” and “A Very Fiona Christmas” are both excellent new holiday books for preschoolers ages 2 to 6. “How Winston Delivered Christmas” is good for kids up to age 9, especially if they’re still believers. Children up to age 12 will enjoy “The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood.” And parents will love all these holiday books, so watch out for them.

Finding Life’s Purpose - Part 2
I
n Part 1 of this article I discussed my personal struggle with finding purpose and meaning in life and comprehending my mortality. Heavy stuff. Based on the number of articles I found in my research, however, I am not alone. If finding greater meaning is unnecessary for your happiness I am truly glad for you. If you are like me, however, and strive to understand more about the universe, yourself, and how the two fit together, by all means read on. As I mentioned in Part 1, I have found four elements that are key to finding
one’s purpose, and thus happiness. Let me be clear this is just my opinion and is an ever evolving hypothesis. These four elements are: 1.) What are you good at, 2.) What makes you happy, 3.) What helps others, and 4.) Do your best. Find something you are good at. All of us have unique talents and it generally feels good use these talents. We naturally gravitate toward the areas where we find success. In school I struggled with advanced math and science but I always found articulating

my thoughts through written word easy. I also found I was, and am, terrible in groups, though I was good at interpersonal communication. So, with my fitness education and experience, personal training and any kind Dave of sales position came Bellomo easily to me. Take a look at talents, jobs, or situations where you have had success in the past. These are often good places to start. Find something that makes you happy. People talk about “finding their happy
place”. Often this is not a place at all but an activity or an environment. A better term might be to discover that about which you are truly passionate. What makes you want to get out of bed every day? What puts a smile on your face? This is not to say that everything about what we enjoy doing is fun or easy. Sometimes doing what makes you happy and finding your path will have challenges and make you uncomfortable. That is OK. In fact, that is good. It shows you are willing to sacrifice to pursue your passion. It will make you work harder, make you stronger, and give you an appreciation for success when you find it. If you could

LIVING WELL spend your time doing anything at all what would it be? Serve God by serving others. I do not often write about my religious beliefs because I feel that people will know what you stand for by your actions and not by what you say. I do, however, feel that I would be remiss if I did not write something about the interconnectedness of faith, service, and happiness. I believe we are ultimately put on this Earth to serve God and we serve God by serving others. If we ignore this fundamental call to service we cannot be truly happy because we

are basing our happiness on things that are fleeting such as short-term pleasure and material gain. Regardless of my religious beliefs, I have found that purpose and joy come from giving to others. Where can your talents be put to the best use? Maybe you are interested in feeding the needy or helping the environment. Maybe you are simply really good at helping to brighten the moods of those around you. Service does not have to be something so big that you will be nominated for sainthood. Most of life is made up of small moments and we can use these

Season’s Greetings
use the skills and talents God has given you to contribute, in some small way, to make the world a better place. Usually these skills are going to be something that you are not only good at, but also find fun and enjoyable. Last, do your best but allow that you are fallible and will make mistakes regardless of how noble your intentions. Learn from those mistakes, try to do better in the future, and move on. Viewing life from this perspective will not solve all of your existential problems. You will still occasionally struggle to find meaning, lose your temper, get depressed, be sad, etc. It will, however, give you a beacon in a sea of meaninglessness and will be a credo upon which to base your life’s mission. Thank you for allowing me to help you buy or sell your home in 2019. It’s been my pleasure assisting you. Real estate is my passion and I have the experience to help make the process easier and less stressful. Contact me whenever you have a need for a Realtor. Wishing you all a very Happy Holiday season & a wonderful and prosperous New Year.

moments to perform many small acts of kindness that will have a huge impact on the lives of others. Do your best. You, by yourself, will not solve all of the world’s problems. So, stop worrying all of the time about things you cannot control. I will admit, this is a personal struggle. This doesn’t mean that you should not try to contribute. On the contrary, you should use your talents to improve whatever small part of this complex world you can. You will stumble and fall, but you can also make the decision to get back up and carry on. To find your purpose, instead of trying to save the world try instead to find what is important to you; your passion. Then

uietly, in the peace and solitude of Wildwood Cemetery, dozens of volunteers devoted their time last Saturday, December 14 to pay their respects to local veterans as part of the annual Wreaths Across America tribute to our fallen heroes. “Our observance was held in conjunction with hundreds of other such events going on in local and national
cemeteries in all 50 states to honor those who served our country,” explained Dori Rankinen a volunteer with the Blue Star Mothers Chapter 12 that organized the event. The wreath-laying movement began in 1992 when the Worchester, Massachusetts Wreath Company began a tradition of placing wreaths on the headstones of our Nation’s Fallen Heroes at Arlington National Cemetery. The annual tribute went on quietly for several years until 2005, when a photo

America movement a few years ago. This year they were able to place wreaths at the headstones of 538 veterans at Wildwood, which is an increase from the 303 placed last year. The non-profit organization still has a long way to go as there are 3,000 veterans buried at the cemetery. It is their goal to be able to increase awareness and funding so that wreaths can be placed at the grave of every veteran buried at the cemetery. Funding for the commemorative wreaths was provided by area businesses and individuals. Those interested in obtaining additional information regarding Wreaths Across America or making a contribution are encouraged to contact Dori Rankinen at 570-772-2423.

Today, Wreaths Across America is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that was founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at cemeteries and other locations across the country and beyond. In 2018, nearly 1.8 million veteran wreaths were placed on headstones at 1,640 participating cemeteries around the country in honor of the service and sacrifices made for our freedom, with each veterans name said out loud. Locally, the Blue Star Mothers began laying wreaths the second Saturday in December as part of the Wreaths Across

Note: This article was inspired by a sermon preached by Rev. Carey Richards. With her permission, I have edited it to be an article for the Webb Weekly. This week’s theme for Advent is preparation. Remember, Advent means coming – and part of the Advent celebration involves preparing for Jesus’ return. Preparing to be in the presence
of God is no trivial thing. When God was about to speak to the people of Israel at Mt. Sinai, He had Moses instruct them to prepare - to consecrate themselves by washing their clothes and refraining from sexual relations. When Isaiah was called by God, an angel Tim prepared him by touching his Hartzell lips with a hot coal to remove his guilt and atone for his sin.

are not followed. John the Baptist was a confrontive truth-telling prophet. He knew that One more powerful than he was coming and the people must get ready. His primary message was to repent, to turn away from things that kept them from completely trusting in God. He confronted the religious elite and their sense of entitlement. He confronted the tax collectors and soldiers and corrupt leaders. Frankly, he confronted everyone by calling on them to change behaviors that were not pleasing to

When God was about to walk among His people in the person of Jesus Christ, He sent John the Baptist to prepare the way by confronting sin and calling the people to repentance. We often think of prophets as people who foretold the future, which they sometimes did, but the prophets were primarily confrontive truth-tellers. They told Israel what God expected of them and that there would be consequences if they didn’t obey. Parents are kind of like prophets - they tell their children what is expected and then give the consequences if directions

CONFRONTATION God. Jesus was about to be with them, and they needed to get ready to be in the presence of the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world. Along with confrontation, John also brought comfort. After 400 years of silence, God was once again speaking to His people. How comforting it must have been to know that God had not forgotten them and that He was prepared to claim them as His own by keeping the promises He had made to their ancestors!
We all need people in our lives who are truth-telling prophets. The kind of people who are truly sincere when they give us a compliment – and have our best interests at heart when they confront us with our painful realities. It is very comforting to know that they see our flaws, but love and accept us anyway. God loves us just the way we are, but He loves us too much to let us stay that way. This bitter-sweet mixture of confrontation and comfort is what leads
us toward holiness and the fulfillment of our divine potential. Consider how the Lord’s Supper simultaneously confronts and comforts. Remembering the death of our Lord and Savior reminds us that He died because of our sinfulness. Jesus’ words, this is my body given for you and this cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you are reminiscent of the sin offerings that Israel would have observed under the Old Covenant. They echo the prophecy of the suffering servant in Isaiah who was pierced for our transgressions and crushed for our

iniquities. The Lord’s supper confronts us with the reality that we don’t always live up to God’s will for us, but it also comforts by reminding us of God’s love and grace and that by His wounds, we are healed. Friends, are you ready for the return of Jesus Christ? Have you repented of your sin and given Jesus Christ the full Lordship of your life? If not, then please consider Jesus’ prophecy about His return given in Luke 24, “But about that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. As it was in the days of

The truth is this: if you’re not ready when Jesus returns, then you will be left behind. Being confronted by that truth may be painful or even offensive, but if you don’t know, you cannot prepare. In love, Jesus wants you to know the truth so that you can be ready – and so His return will be something anticipated and filled with joy! My friend, He loves you and is ready to receive you into His family. What would keep you from knowing that comfort today? Because He is patient, He has given you time to prepare. But make no mistake, He is coming soon. Are you ready?

Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. For in the days before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; and they knew nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away. That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come.”

I am very happy to have the gift of my freedom, to be able to make choices. My Pappy and Poppy and Nina tell me stories of people that do not have choices or freedom to go to church or school. I watch the news and hear of bad things that happen to other people far away. It is sad that those people do not know what a thankful feeling it is to be an American. The people that are in the military sometimes have to

ith just a week remaining until the long-awaited thrill of Christmas morning arrives, filled with the aromas of hot chocolate, a fire in the fireplace, and bacon frying, time is slipping away. There is finding and trimming a tree, getting the house ready for all of the relatives and friends who will drop by and all the usual baking and food preparations to do. And then there is all that shopping yet to be done. Wait. Are you still shopping? Not sure what to get that hunter, fisherman, or outdoorsman on your list? Well, here are a few suggestions for that hard to buy for a person who seems to already have everything they need or want. When nighttime temperatures sink into the single digits, it is really important to think about dressing in layers and being both safe and smart when you step outside. It doesn’t mean that a sportsman has to limit his outside activities, just that he needs to be more aware of the chance of
frostbite and hypothermia. To that end, consider the latest product line from ThermaCell. (They are the company that brought us the ThermaCell Insect Repellent Device, now used worldwide by sportsmen to repel mosquitoes and other bothersome buzzing insects effectively). Now, their line of Heated Insoles is the perfect solution to ensure warm feet on these extremely cold days and nights. They are not cheap, ranging in price from $77.00 to models priced at $199.99, but they are an outstanding product that just may be the best protection available from frostbitten toes! ThermaCell also offers “Heat Packs,” a pocket warmer that is also battery powered and is actually operated by your smart device without removing it from your pocket or clothing. Now, you have warm hands as well! Want a great and very inexpensive alternative? HotHands makes a chemical pack that, when shaken up to activate the ingredients, will provide a reliable heat source that will last for hours. They are not just hand warmers but can be used as toe

likes to perfect his hand at his culinary skills. Whether he is roasting, grilling, smoking, or frying, there are dozens of mixes available to take any dish and “kick it up a notch!” Clothes that actually fit! Now, we are getting a bit personal. But, really, how many times have you given a gift of clothing — especially those items worn by hunters, shooters, fishermen, or other outdoor enthusiasts — that actually fit! The suggestion here is to go for a gift certificate and let the intended wearer actually pick out an item or two. Most sportsmen today are very
picky when it comes to the exact styles and patterns that they really want to wear, and fishermen maybe even more choosey than the average hunter. Best to let them have the final say in outdoor wear; thus, the good old-fashioned gift certificate should work well. Lastly, for a present that keeps on giving — well, for at least a year — think about gifting your favorite sportsman an annual membership in one of their favorite conservation organizations, such as Trout Unlimited, Ducks Unlimited, the National Wild Turkey Federation or the Quality Deer
Management Association. Certainly, any gun owner would be happy to receive a membership in the National Rifle Association, if they are not already a member. All of these organizations send out monthly or bi-monthly publications that will provide hours of wintertime or rainy day reading and a reminder of your thoughtful gift idea. There is still time to pick out any number of things that will put a smile on the face of your favorite sportsman. If you are still in doubt, a quick trip to any of our area sporting goods retailers will help you check off your list.

And what if it’s not “purple” enough; does that negate the meaning of the sign? What happens if the stripes are an inch and a half wide? Also, as the tree grows, what happens if the three-foot level requirement is exceeded? I’ll probably lay awake at night contemplating the outcome of these questions, but in the meantime, I may also get more sleep knowing I don’t have to buy my regulation books from the commissions.

They would also have to be three to five feet above the ground and on trees no more than 100 feet apart. Apparently, paint manufacturers have formulated paint specifically to be marketed as the “no trespassing paint.” The bill has passed the House and Senate and is now waiting for Gov. Wolf ’s signature. It may be a more permanent solution, but I do have a couple of questions. As a professional artist, I am very cognizant (for my friends at

I’ve heard a few grumbles from Penn State fans who were hoping for a Rose Bowl game. Under the bowl selection systems, that ‘hope’ disappeared with the loss to Minnesota. Wisconsin beat those same Gophers and advanced to the Big Ten title game. But the Cotton Bowl is not a bad consolation prize. They are favored against Memphis State, and fans traveling to Texas will be treated to a special place in AT&T Stadium. If you are making the trip, make sure to book a VIP Tour of the stadium. The two-hour tour is worth the cost. Among the bowl participants, Arizona State University will be taking on Florida State December 31 at the Sun Bowl in El Paso. Despite finishing 7-5 including two late-season wins against PAC-12 champion Oregon and rival Arizona, coach Herm Edwards fired the bulk of his offensive staff that included Warrior Run graduate and long-time college coach Charlie Fisher. Fisher, the Sun Devils’ wide receiver coach and former assistant at Penn State under Bill O’Brien, joined Edwards’ staff at the beginning of the 2018 season. In a recent communication, Fisher told me, “I’m good. This is a crazy business. I’ve been blessed beyond measure. It has been a great ride.” He also revealed he had purchased a home in the Lewisburg area and will be coming back in January, excited for the next chapter in his life. Enjoying the upcoming bowl season, wherever you’re rooting interest may lie.
59 • Webb Weekly December 18, 2019
so many bowl games, there have been instances where there have not been enough teams with .500 records to fill the needed slots. During the past three seasons, there were 81 bowl-eligible teams in 2018, 76 in 2017, and 79 is 2016, all providing more teams then were needed. In 2012 and again in 2015, the bowl system could not fill their games with .500 teams. The NCAA ‘addressed’ the problem by allowing 5-7 teams to go bowling. That was the only solution as legally, the NCAA couldn’t cap the number of bowls. In 2016 the NCAA placed a moratorium on the creation of any new bowl games. That moratorium ends in 2020 when three more bowl games will bring the total to 42 with the addition of Myrtle Beach, Boston (at Fenway Park), and Los Angeles at the new SoFi Stadium. That will require 84 teams to fill the slots. By the way — hats off to the PAC-12 Conference for their common sense in invoking a ruling that their teams reach the six wins or .500 level to take part in a bowl game. Indeed, the regular season should count for something. Statistics reveal that bowl attendance is down in recent years, but that doesn’t make much difference to TV rightsholders. ESPN televises the vast majority of the bowl games, and the TV ratings are consistent and certainly better than what other programming otherwise would be available in December. While there may be too many bowls, which ones should be eliminated? Every bowl is serving some purpose.
