God’s Greatest Gift
A
very Merry Christmas to everyone! Let’s all be careful out there while enjoying all that is a blessed Holiday season. Please remember to say thank you to all that prepare the perfectly delicious Christmas feast. Absolutely no political discussions until the New Year. And let’s keep the conversation around the table joyous. The most quoted and famous bible verse in the history of Christianity, “For God so loved the world he gave his one and only son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16. This should bring warmth to your heart, a smile to your face, and provide peace of mind. This is truly what the Christmas spirit is all about. At a time when the world has never been more complicated, and true evil can be seen and viewed every day, the answer can be found in the greatest father-son story ever told. The Bible and its teachings can often be difficult to interpret and even harder to follow without sin. Our God Jehovah understood this and provided us a back-up plan and a clear message in John 3:16. It couldn’t be spelled out any clearer. Believe and accept Jesus Christ
as your savior as he is the provider of forgiveness and all that is good in the world and ever after. The miracle of Christmas enhances this message along with one of the most important intangibles during our journey through life, that of hope. That when things get tough in our mortal world, and bad things happen by choice or chance, God has provided a plan that can be found in John 3:16. All you must do is simply believe in the baby Jesus. Christmas celebrates the birth of our Lord Savior’s arrival on Earth. Please make some time during the Christmas festivities to talk with your children and explain God’s plan. Get out and about and share your Christmas spirit with the older members of your family that may be homebound or in a nursing facility. Help to lift up the spirits for those that are missing a loved one at the family table. On Christmas Eve, don’t forget to leave Jolly Old Saint Nicholas those special cookies and milk. He is truly working in the name of God. And Santa’s story is a special time in childrens’ lives. Father John Manno taught me that both need to be embraced and explained. He would also want me to wish everyone a

very Merry Christmas. My story sharing his thoughts from last year “A Christmas Blessing and Story” can be found on page 38. Maybe I’ll make it a Christmas tradition to publish this column each year. Tip of my Santa cap to Jim Kent Bennett, Salvation Webb, Jr. Army Board President, all-around good guy and bringer of life to the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Kickoff breakfast. The third annual event was held in late November. The mission of the event is simple, to supplement the ringing of the bell at storefronts by raising as much money for the local Salvation Army as possible. In today’s world, this ringing of the bell just doesn’t have the same effect as in Christmases past. I have been committed to keeping the memory of David Sechler alive and continuing his lifetime of work for the Salvation Army. The Red Kettle Breakfast just seemed like a perfect fit, so I sponsor the annual get together. Dave had over four decades of service to the Salvation Army and their local efforts. Many may remember his kind and smiling face as he greeted you at the entrance to the Sal’s gym. Sech oversaw

and took care of the facility like it was his own. Each year at the breakfast, they honor an individual for their efforts on behalf of the Salvation Army. Last year it was my good friend Dave. This year they memorialized long-time volunteer Eva Archer. Eva served in the women’s auxiliary and was the Secretary of the board of directors for over 25 years. She was a great lady, committed volunteer, as well as a very talented artist in regards to her painting. In 2015, the board of advisors awarded her lifetime membership status to the board. She was only the second person to receive this honor. Eva passed in 2016. On Kent’s behalf, I would like to thank everybody that attended and all who contributed to the Red Kettle Kickoff. The event raised over $23,000, which will stay right here at home to help with the various programs they provide. Last year during the Christmas season, the Salvation Army provided 496 food baskets, 7,632 toys for children, and over 1,200 clothing items, which included many winter coats. This is just a small example of the great work they do all year long. Thank you to everyone for their generosity and continued support of the Salvation Army not only during the holiday season but all year long. God Bless America.

Steph I did have to pull in Nordstrom some outside help in judging, just to make sure we picked the best of the best! With almost 400 entries to filter down to 30 winners, it was not an easy process. So many, were so good — it was hard to choose! Thank you to everyone who put in such incredible effort in their coloring. Paint, glitter, cotton balls — it’s always impressive to see the creativity put into the each entry.

ell y’all. I did it! I managed to finish all my shopping! Wrapping is in the works, groceries are on the schedule and I even had some time to make some eggnog for those near and dear! I’m so full of Holiday Cheer I can barely contain myself. New traditions are mixing with old and it’s so much fun celebrating with everyone! I am so excited to announce the winners of the Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships Christmas Coloring Contest! It was no easy task judging all the amazing entries that were submitted this year. Cupcake Fizzyfluff, Merry Gingertows, and Noel Twinklespice, were all great helps in getting all the entries sorted, filed and judged. I’m still searching for Marshmallow Cuddlecane. I think she’s hanging out on Candy Cane Lane. Last I heard she was handing

’m thankful for everything that helps me the tiniest bit. Are you? I’m thankful for family, God, food and water. I’m especially thankful for my family. My family helps me get through things. For example, once my hamster died they made me think about the good times. My family is loving and caring. They will give me the things that I need growing up. I also appreciate God. I appreciate God because He created me. He is responsible for

almost everything I love. Also, I am grateful for God because He created everything on Earth. My last reason is He created food and water to keep me alive. Finally, I am grateful for food and water. I’m grateful for them because I wouldn’t be alive without them. I eat good food for good health. Sometimes I eat junk food. I like food because different types of food taste good. I like water because water is healthy. As I enjoy the holiday season, I realized I have many reasons to be thankful for family, God, food and water. These things are most important in my life.

contested that the true author was Henry Livingston Jr., who penned the poem, which was supported by content analysis, though credit for the piece is still generally given to Moore. The image was further strengthened by cartoonist, Thomas Nast, with an 1881 illustration in Harper’s Weekly. This drawing became so popular that it is still reproduced today and has cemented our image of modern-day Santa Claus that is used in celebration and advertising around the world. ‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse. The stockings were hung by the chimney with care, in hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there... Regardless of where you are from, what you call him, or what you believe he looks like, Santa Claus has had a profound impact upon the season of Christmas throughout history. He is a character that brings joy to children and signals the anticipation of Christmas morning. For adults, he reminds us of a simpler, more innocent time. He is part of the magic that remains in this fastpaced, digital world and allows us to forget our troubles for a brief moment. Oh, by the way, he IS real!

on a real-life Saint Nicholas who is believed to have lived from 270-343 AD. He was born to wealthy parents in the village of Patara, which is now part of Turkey and was known to be generous and protective of children. A recurring story tells of a father that had three daughters but was too poor to offer a dowery so that they could be married. This was very significant in those days and meant that the girls would likely fall into a life of prostitution as their only means of survival. Hearing of this, he provided the three girls with dowries by throwing gold through an open window. It is said that the gold landed in shoes or stockings that had been placed by a fire to dry, thus beginning the tradition of placing stockings on the mantle by a fireplace. His generosity was boundless, and he is reported to have used his entire fortune to help the sick and the needy. Nicholas was known as such a devout Christian that he was made Bishop of Myra, an area that has changed hands many times but is now in present-day Turkey. He is said to have died on December 6th, 343, and because of his love of children, the tradition of giving gifts in honor of the death of St. Nicholas became custom. December 6th remains as a day of gift-giving in many European countries to this day. Like his name, the look of Santa Claus has changed many times. Still, the modern image of a portly older gentleman with a beard and spectacles was popularized in North America by the 1823 poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” better known as “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas,” which was published anonymously in 1823. The poem was later attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, who claimed authorship in 1837. It was later

s the area continued to dig out of the snowfall, which struck the region Thursday, the threat of a new storm looms as a possibility to hit here as early as Monday. When the overcast sky broke Sunday
afternoon to end the storm, which began at about 4 p.m. Christmas Day, the area lay under 17 inches of fresh snow. This brought the total for the season to 36.1 inches — up nearly two feet since last Sunday. The storm nearly halted all business and industrial activity in the Williamsport area. Three banks were among the few
emergency items. Emerson Yaw, maintenance supervisor of District 3-0 of the Pennsylvania Department of Highways, said major arteries were opened to traffic. For rural county roads, though, the battle against constantly blowing and drifting snow posed a critical problem. Highway maintenance crews in Lycoming County went into action late Christmas afternoon with 26 plows, 5 graders, and 35 trucks. Yesterday at noon 140 men were on the job, most of them working overtime, with 60 pieces of snow removal and allied equipment, according to Yaw.

Daisy is a beautiful Australian Cattle Dog mix. She is ten years old and has recently lost her home of many years. She likes to ride in the car, is polite to children and cats, and walks well on a leash. In short, she is a fantastic catch! She longs to adore someone again, so please come visit Daisy in Kennel 46.
Looking to add a pint-sized bundle of fluff to your home? Peach Cobbler would love to be your girl! She is just one of the nineteen hamsters calling the SPCA their home-between-homes right now. She is an adult and enjoys burrowing, eating (of course), and cuddling with her friend, Gumdrop. The hamsters are available in our Lobby.

The Wartime Yuletide of 1944 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.
T
he Yuletide of 75 years ago, 1944, was a mixture of dread, joy, and anticipation. There was joy and anticipation because the Allies in both the European and Pacific Theaters were making great gains against the Nazis and the Japanese, and there seemed to be real hope that the war might soon be winding down to a conclusion. But then on December 16, the Nazis launched a major counteroffensive across an 80-mile front that involved more than 250,000 men in Belgium and Luxemburg in the Ardennes Forest area that threatened the Belgian port of Antwerp where Allied forces were receiving much of their supplies. This offensive and the battle arising from it became known as the Battle of Bulge, because of the bulge in American lines the offensive created. This offensive was the largest and bloodiest single battle fought by the United States in World War II and the third deadliest campaign in American history. The Battle of the Bulge was treated very seriously. At home, an ad in the Gazette and Bulletin from the Lycoming County Salvaged Committee stated on December 21, 1944, “THAT THE GERMAN COUNTEROFFENSIVE
MEANT THAT EVERY BIT OF PAPER, EVERY TIN CAN, AND EVERY DROP OF HOUSEHOLD FAT NEEDED TO BE SALVAGED AS NEVER BEFORE.” In other war news, the Red Army was closing in on Budapest, Hungary, and that it would soon be “liberated” from the Nazis. Other Russian troops were in Czechoslovakia along a 59-mile front. In the Pacific, Allied forces led by General Douglas MacArthur were advancing on Mindoro and Leyte Islands in the campaign to free the Philippines from the Japanese. Back in this country, Franklin Roosevelt was looking forward to his fourth term as President, which he was elected to in November, he would only live for four more months. Big Band fans were still reeling over the news that bandleader, Glenn Miller’s plane had been lost over the English Channel on December 15. In Pennsylvania, Edward Martin was Governor of Pennsylvania. In sports, Ohio State Quarterback, Les Horvath won the Heisman Trophy. The NFL Championship was won by the Green Bay Packers 14-7 over the New York Giants, as Ted Fritsch scored both touchdowns for the Packers. In local sports, in the last high school basketball games before the holiday, South Williamsport defeated

yielded five tons of scrap paper. 20 Scouts assisted by several adults made the drive. Other Scouts collected fifteen more tons of paper throughout the area. Holiday postal business in the Williamsport area amounted to $54 million, $6 million more than in 1943. It was announced that war plants in the city would close on Christmas Day. A shortage of Christmas trees was reported in this area. The shortage amounted to about 5,000 trees. In local stores and markets, Bulova watches sold for $42.50 and Longines for $57, were available at Regal and Blum Jewelers. Neyhart’s had dartboards for $2.95, a

Andrus Company was selling popular record albums by Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Bunny Berigan, Duke Ellington, and Fats Waller. In local movie houses, the Keystone Theater was featuring “Babes on Swing Street, with Ann Blyth, Peggy Ryan, Leon Errol, and Andy Devine. The Karlton had
Disney’s “Snow White,” The Rialto had “Three Is A Family,” and the Capitol had “Cassanova Brown” with Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright. More than 1,700 youngsters attended a Christmas Party at the Karlton Theater on Christmas Eve. The C.I.O sponsored the party. The film “Lost Angel” was shown, and prizes donated by area merchants were given out to lucky youngsters. Williamsport had a white Christmas but a wet one. It came on the heels of the season’s worst cold wave. The temperatures moderated, creating a downpour of rain that cast a pall over the city. This caused what snow there was on the ground to turn into slush.

The Word Became Flesh
D
uring this fourth week of Advent, we are focusing on John’s description of Jesus as “the Word became flesh.” You can find this passage in John’s gospel, chapter 1. It sometimes happens that word meanings become trivialized. To trivialize something is to make it seem less important, less significant or less complex than it really is. Words have meanings, but when those meanings are weakened or lost, communication suffers. The trivialization of words is a chronic
problem in our noisy culture. Not only can we not agree on ideas, we can’t even agree on the meanings of the words we’re using to debate those ideas. Frustrated and divided are the people whose words no longer mean anything. Right now, that seems to describe our country. It is painful to watch the news or listen to politicians. We do not hear each other — and we’re not listening. There is too much talk — and the volume is so loud that our ears are filled with distortion. C.S. Lewis recognized the importance of choosing words carefully. He once

said, “Don’t use the word ‘infinitely’ when you mean ‘very.’ Otherwise, you will have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite.” There seems to be very little effort given these days to finding the right words. Instead, we spew out far too many words or Tim inject unnecessary drama Hartzell to make a point. Talk, talk, talk — drama, drama, drama. Proverbs 10:19 reminds us that where words are many, sin is not far off. This is not a new problem. Jesus was also born into a community where words
had lost their meaning. Four hundred years of Divine silence had resulted in a religion deeply steeped in wordiness. Jesus confronted long prayers and endless lists of laws that resulted in love-less legalism and hypocrisy. To help them see just how far off the rails they had traveled, He summed up all of the teaching of the Laws and the Prophets into two brief statements containing just 34 words: “Love the Lord your God with all of your heart and with all of your soul and with all of your strength and with all of your mind — and love your neighbor as yourself.” He confronted their long vows and the dramatic ways they would swear oaths by telling them, “All you need to say is ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.” When

The phrase was first attributed to Tess Flanders, a newspaper editor. Both utilized the concept to highlight the effectiveness of using illustrations in news reporting and advertising. For example, a picture of a burning house can tell a story without a single word being written. While pictures are useful, word-becomeflesh is far more effective. Jesus didn’t need to say a lot because everything He did spoke volumes. Thomas Jefferson once said, “It is in our lives, and not in our words, that our religion must be read.” What would happen if Christians talked less and loved more? Here are some examples of words Jesus brought to life by becoming flesh: Do you want to understand what the
word grace means? Picture Jesus rescuing the woman caught in adultery from the posse that was ready to stone her to death. That’s grace. Do you want to understand what the word agony means? Then kneel down next to Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane as He begins to bear the weight of the sins of the world. That’s agony. Do you want to understand what the word passion means? If so, then walk along with Jesus as He carries His cross to Golgotha. That’s passion. Do you want to understand what the word mercy means? Listen to Jesus as He forgives His executioners while dying on the cross they nailed Him to. That’s mercy. Do you want to understand what the
word love means? Then kneel down with the shepherds and gaze upon Almighty God lying in a manger of straw . . . in a stable . . . in Bethlehem. That’s love. Jesus taught far more by what He did than by what He said. He did more than talk about truth; He embodied it. He brought it to life. Clearly, He is calling on us to do the same. God needs for us to be the wordbecome-flesh in a world filled with ampedup drama and meaningless word-noise. In the year 2020, let’s talk less and love more. May you and I be the word-becomeflesh in a world starving for authentic Christianity. As Saint Francis of Assisi said, “Preach the gospel at all times. When necessary, use words.” Amen and Merry Christmas. PA #121099

He taught the disciples how to pray, He warned them against praying like the pagans who babbled on and on. He then offered a model prayer that contained just 52 words. We call it The Lord’s Prayer. Martin Luther once said, “The fewer the words, the better the prayer.” In fact, the gospels record about 2,000 words spoken by Jesus. That’s it. For comparison, this article contains 914 words. How did a man who said so little effect the world so greatly? The answer is given by John as he introduces Jesus in his gospel: the Word (Jesus) became flesh and dwelt among us. In the 1920s, an advertising agent named Fred R. Barnard popularized the phrase, a picture is worth a thousand words.

White Elephant Gift Ideas
W
orkplace holiday celebrations come in every shape and size, from potluck lunches to catered cocktail hours. No matter the type of shindig you have, chances are high that there is an element of gift exchange, whether it’s a Secret Santa, group gift, or a white elephant. There are several approaches you can take when shopping for white elephant gifts, whether you go with a gag gift or something more thoughtful. Still, it’s hard to shop for colleagues, especially if you may be newer to the organization or
have little interaction with the group as a whole. Here are a few suggestions for office-appropriate, under $25 gifts, for your workplace white elephant gift grab. Go for the laugh. If you consider yourself the office clown, or just enjoy silly presents, gag gifts are an easy way to bring a bit more fun to the process. However, it would be best if you approached with caution. Humor is very subjective, and you definitely want to stay away from anything too explicit: Looking at you “Old Fart” graphic tees. A safe, yet still funny gift is, “101 So Bad, They’re Good Dad
Jokes” from Amazon. This extremely punny tome is full of some amusing and harmless one-liners. I’d also recommend “The World’s Greatest Book of Useless Information” from Amazon. This book is full of frivolous facts and silly statistics that no one really needs to know Bernadette but are cool to find out. Ulsamer If you’re more of a practical gift-giver, go for something useful. In any work setting, there are some essentials that everyone can use, and a white elephant exchange is a convenient way to fulfill those needs.
Gifts like desk organizers, BPA-free water bottles, or word-of-the-day calendars may not be the most talked-about gift at the party, but something functional is better than something weird, gross, or creepy— looking at you dog poo calendars. I also like the idea of mini care packs as a white elephant option. A gift bag with travel size toothpaste, a face mask, and lip balm are alternative work essentials that allow your co-workers to practice some self-care on the job. Speaking of self-care, you can never go wrong with socks and soap. Everyone needs to keep their feet warm, and we all need to bathe. This may seem kind of boring, but you can get quite creative with this combo, like a snowflake soap

frequents, like Walmart, Target, and the grocery store, won’t set the gift-giving world on fire but are much appreciated. I know I appreciated the Target gift card I got last year, it covered a crucial diaper run on New Year’s Eve. White elephant gift exchanges are all about the luck of the draw; you never know who will end up with the present you brought. And while it may be tempting to push the envelope with edgy gag gifts, chances are your racy deck of cards will wind up in the hands of a coworker that will take offense or, worse yet, your boss. So, for this year’s office party, consider going with a safe, yet still thoughtful gift for your workplace white elephant.

f you know Father John Manno, you can’t help but love him. He has been a true blessing to our community for decades. I thank him for sharing his Christmas card and message for this glorious season with all of us. It began with the simple cry of a baby ... And grew into a shout of good news that echoed Through the Ages ... Christ is born! Shout aloud and sing for joy, O royal Zion, for great in your midst is the Holy One of Israel. Isaiah 12:6 “Dear friends and family, traditional nativity scenes inspire us. This year’s card is contemporary since it uniquely communicates ‘realness!’ You see the basin and towel used by a father prior to presenting his adopted son into the first embrace of his mother’s arms. Without a doubt, the moment brought a challenge. The baby’s first cry was destined for evolution into the greatest ‘voice’ the world would ever hear.” Wishing you all the best things of Christmas, Father John Manno. Father Manno has worked for the good of God and spreading the message of Christ Our Savior for a lifetime. He has been a celebrant of Christmas Mass for over 50 years. Here at home, he has spent a combined 30 years between Annunciation in Williamsport and Our Lady of Lourdes in Montoursville. But during his journey, he also spent 16 years at St. John Bosco in Conyngham, Pennsylvania, two years at St. Peters Cathe-
dral in Scranton, two years at St. John the Evangelist in Pittston and his early years at the Seaman’s House YMCA in New York City. Father Manno estimated that he has been the celebrant of Christmas Mass over 200 times at the different parishes, which includes up to five during a single Christmas season. As I talked with Father Manno about Christmas, the twinkle in his eye just burned brighter and brighter. He seemed to get younger right before my eyes as he shared his thoughts about the birth of our Savior Jesus Christ and Christmastime. His message to all, “Experience Christmas, the contemplation of God to come amongst us. It is a most joyous time, to celebrate the importance of the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and how God sent his only son to the mortal world to provide us everlasting life. All beginning with the innocence and vulnerability of having a baby born in a manger.” Father Manno wants everybody to live Christmas. “To understand and experience the love of God and his only Son. How Mary and Joseph, who were two migrants, accepted our Lord and cared for him unconditionally. Joseph being his stepfather loved him like his own. I think this is a message for all families — no matter of their makeup. When God comes into our life, we realize the importance of each other, and how we are all truly one.” Father Manno has always been a champion for equality and diversity and wanted me to remind everyone that the coming of Jesus

Santa into his Christmas Mass. Father Manno would have Santa Claus enter through the back of the church during evening and midnight masses, walk right down the aisle to the crèche, take off his hat and kneel down in respect of the Christ child. Santa would adore and show his amazement for Earth’s newborn King. Then rise slowly, back into the darkness and exit to the side of the church. This became a Father Manno tradition known as Midnight Santa that he loves doing each and every year. Father mentioned to me, at Annunciation while doing a Christmas service in the 80s a loud banging was heard from the rooftop of the church just as Santa arrived at the altar. This was not scripted, and to this day Father Manno is still scratching his head in wonder. Father Manno’s favorite Christmas cookie is the janette. His favorite Christmas song is “What Child is This.” He always looks forward to a traditional Christmas Eve dinner of aioli and baccala. Aioli is a pasta dish with garlic, olive oil, anchovies, and capers. Baccala soup is cod with a tomato base, kale, grapes, walnuts and more. Father wants everyone to know his “health is good but his legs, not so much.” And you can find him on Facebook. Most importantly “Celebrate the realness of God’s gift of Emmanuel every day, not just on Christmas.” Father John is officially a Pastor Emeritus within the Catholic Church. Which basically means retired with honor. He will still be the celebrant of a couple of Christmas Masses this season. . Merry Christmas! And as always God Bless America.

is for everyone. “The wise men were Kings from three different cultures, Jesus was truly sent to unite the world in the name of God.” At this point, I asked Father Manno a few questions about his Christmas experiences over the years. His favorite Christmas was in New York City in 1974. He served people from all nationalities aboard maritime ships on the Brooklyn Waterfront in New York Harbor. It was his privilege to board these ships no matter of origin. There were Dutch, German, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, South African — you name it. He would go on the ships and minister in The name of the Lord. “It was beautiful at Christmastime; the ships were decorated in the traditions of the sailors’ Homeland.” His all-time favorite Christmas tree ornament is a gift from the Captain of a Japanese Maru or cargo ship. Although there was a language barrier, they both understood the joy of the season. “We are all alike; I learned this during my time in New York City. I met sailors from all walks of life that understood the realness of Jesus Christ.” One of the most moving Christmases for Father Manno took place at St. John Bosco. It was his first Midnight Mass celebration. As it ended, he looked out the doors of the church, and the world was at peace as snow began to fall on the full-size Nativity scene the parishioners of the church had recently set up. “It was surreal and moving, perfect timing.” Father Manno has always embraced Santa Claus. Saint Nicholas is the beloved Patron Saint of Children. He completely understood how Santa and St. Nicklaus represent a magic time of a child’s Christmas. So what did Father Manno do? He implemented

pounds taken in Monroe County. The largest bear ever taken in Pennsylvania was an 875 pounder taken in Pike County in 2010. There may be a few people wondering if we are taking too many bears, but I seriously doubt that’s the case. With an estimated 20,000 bears roaming the countryside in Pennsylvania, taking four or five thousand will not have a permanent effect since it is highly likely that there will be four or five thousand new cubs introduced to the population next spring. If anything, I can see the population continuing to
expand, especially as bears move into new areas. Actually, I have had more people telling me of bear sightings and nuisance bears than ever before. My own observations over the past two weeks have been a bit telling regarding bear numbers. As I was traveling west on Route 220 just before I passed Aldi’s on the strip in Williamsport, I saw a dead bear lying on the on-ramp; I estimated it to be around 200 pounds. When I reported the incident to my wife at her workplace, someone there told me they also saw a dead black bear on the highway coming south on
MURRAY
Route 15 that same morning. If that were not enough coming east on 220 less than a mile from the Lycoming Mall exit, I saw what looked like someone checking a dead black bear down over the sloping bank; someone else told me they saw it as well. All of these sightings were after the close of bear season. It’s a pretty safe bet the bear population is in good shape; in fact, I think I’m going to wait another couple of weeks to put feed in my bird feeders — I’m tired of finding my broken bird feeders back in the woods behind the house.

It’s interesting to note that our own Lycoming County led the list of the top ten bear harvests with a total of 283; Lycoming is frequently at the top or near the top in bear harvests. Clinton County was second with 267, and Tioga County was third with 263. It’s also been a good year for big bears. A couple of weeks ago, I wrote about Reuben Kennel’s 620 pounder taken in Union County, but there were at least another dozen in the 600 plus category including one of 747 pounds taken in Luzerne County and one of 813

o matter your beliefs, or non-belief, or how you choose to observe the holiday, this time of the year is like no other. It’s a season of celebration, reflection, consideration, and unification. Memories are made, traditions are continued, and in many cases, new ones are formed. Families and friends gather, and for an all too brief period of time, the trials and tribulations of the everyday world are cast aside for a few magical moments. It is a time when the oft-repeated phrase ‘tis better to give than to receive’ rings true in the hearts and actions of many. In keeping with that spirit, many sporting gifts will be found under the trees with hopes the recipients will find joy in their usage long after the wrapping paper has been discarded and the decorations are taken down. Indeed it is a bit of utopia, but wouldn’t we all find this a better place if some of that ‘Christmas game plan’ be drawn up on the ‘whiteboards’ of our everyday lives? Despite many comments from individuals who indicate they have read something I have written in this space
over the years, I really have no knowledge of the demographics of the readership. My guess is that it entails more over-40s than the younger set and if that is the case and if you are a parent or grandparent of a young athlete, and if you may be in agreement with what follows next, take a moment and share Scott some of its content with that Lowery special individual whose sports you enjoy following. Sports can’t be collectively wrapped in a box, tied with a bow or hung from the boughs of the living room Christmas tree. But there can’t be any question that sports give much more to those who participate than it ever gets back. The gifts it provides include: Inspiration and the opportunity to be involved in something bigger than yourself. It can replace “I can’t” with “I can” and ultimately “I did” when goals you once thought unachievable become a reality. It can boost self-confidence and build an inner-drive that will carry you on to greater life’s victories well beyond the playing field. Perspiration, that sweaty moisture secreted by the sweat glands, is good for you. It replaces the all too often used phrase ‘don’t sweat it.’ It helps keep you in shape, pushes you towards the desired

provide a true gift that can always be treasured. Several days before St. Nick was scheduled to arrive, a tight-knit group of sports officials provided one of their own with a most significant gift that lifted the spirits of the recipient. For fourteen years, Jon Hall was an active member of the Lycoming Chapter of basketball officials. Hall was dedicated to the avocation and kept himself in shape as an active long-distance runner. In October 2018, Hall’s sporting endeavors came to a cruel halt when he was sidelined with a stroke. For the past year, he has progressed through the painstaking rehabilitative process on the long road to get back into the game of life. While on the sidelines, Hall’s officiating comrades lifted his spirits with the presentation of a basketball official’s jersey, individually signed by the members of the local chapter. “Their thoughtfulness in giving me that gift was very heartwarming for me,” Hall admitted. “Officiating is something I really miss. I now have a lot of time on my hands and spend some long hours recalling memories. For them to think of me in that way is very special, and that jersey brings back the good memories I was able to share with so many of them.” Indeed, IT IS better to give than to receive. May we all find it in our hearts to brighten the lives of those around us, not just at Christmas, but all through the year. It would be a winning game plan for all!

goal, and those liquid drops rolling from your forehead are the ultimate reminder that it is hard work, not wishing for it, that will achieve the desired goal. Preparation, as so stated by Alexander Graham Bell, “before anything else, preparation is the key to success. Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open.” In whatever your goal, follow a Plan A, but develop a Plan B to fall back on. Communication, in the old sense of the word — not the Facebook texting & tweeting variety. Teamwork in sports is achieved best via communication of the personal kind, both verbal and nonverbal. Learning how to get along and understand the abilities and background of teammates and coaches. I once heard a coach during a timeout with his players express his displeasure over his team’s lack of communication on the court. Exasperated, the coach said, “For God’s sake, pretend you are texting, but you’ve got to communicate with one another.” For those who choose to give these gifts to sports, a very special one can be received in response. Satisfaction will be achieved when the long hours dedicated to the above four mentioned gifts are unwrapped. Whether athletic competition comes in the form of an individual or team sport, knowing that one did all they could to dedicate themselves to establishing and accomplishing the desired goal will

erry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all of the fine readers of Webb Weekly. Special thanks to those who are fans of this page. I am truly humbled by all of your feedback and praise. Before I begin this week’s recollection, I want to give some love to some friends. Thanks to the boss man Jim and my lovely editor Steph for allowing me to scribe. I am simply a part time writer for Webb and these two folks allow me to improvise. Jim is the big brother I never had. I only hear from him when I do something great or something bad. He has been a great mentor over the years and I appreciate his friendship, encouragement and trust.
Although I only see her a few times a year, Steph and I correspond quite often. She routinely keeps me in the loop and she is the brains of our operation. I have been with the Webb since her beginning. Jim pitched an idea while I was working at WDGC. I provided the copy and designed our weekly advertisements back then. I would update the folks on some of our tournaments and throw in a few stories about some of our charismatic members. I did this every week over ten great seasons. My pages were called “Notes From the Greenside Bunker” and “Coaches Corner.” My proud mother actually made a scrapbook of all of these entries. I often

look back and smile. This was the backdrop to our relationship. Jim and Steph will occasionally ask me to write a cover story. These are always very special assignments on local sporting celebrities. Sometimes it’s a feature on a team or a youngster who Jamie claimed recent PIAA gold. Spencer There’s a lot more pressure with these projects. I always do the best I can. One of my favorite pieces was on the legendary Coach Frank Girardi’s enshrinement to the College Football Hall of Fame. That little write up won me an award. It’s now in a frame. My friends give me the freedom to write on whatever. My weekly assignments vary and sometimes I turn some heads. I have covered just about everything with sports. Professional to amateur. I have wrote many articles on local football and basketball. I also chimed in on high school wrestling and baseball. I even told a few tales on some throwers and pickleball too. I thoroughly enjoy getting to know many of the young athletes and coaches in the area. It keeps me in the loop. Last week’s article on my Brazilian foreign exchange student Ricardo is now trending. Our international views are up 1450%. I do get to scribe about fishing and my love for the great outdoors. Hiking with my son Jensen has been a very popular topic. We are so blessed to live in such a beautiful area. I convince my chums to take me on great
adventures after I promise to mention their names. Britt introduced me to ice fishing and Ian and I trolled for walleyes. Austin took me bassing and Kennedy saved the day. Never a dull moment. How many others watched the very first MLB Little League Classic from a kayak? My three-week rant called “Setting the Record Straight” got me in deep trouble and I no longer push the envelope. Several folks applauded my perspective on the County decision to take over the golf course, but two guys got really mad. How is that making out? My boy Alize Johnson has the most tallies. I believe there were six articles on this extraordinary lad. I wrote about him while he was in high school and when he was with the Missouri State Bears. Alize became the first from our area to be drafted by the NBA. He routinely gives back to the community and his new basketball courts earned a full page spread. Alize continues to amaze. He has an annual Thanksgiving benefit to help the less fortunate and provides the players with shoes on three local hoops teams. Scratch that. Two programs. The other is now getting coal. My favorite subject is my family. Jensen is now ten and he is acting more like his dad. Poor kid. My articles are about his youth sports leagues. Teach doesn’t like the spotlight so I refrain from using her name. I love sharing our stories. Whether it’s X-Box or Fortnite. Elf on the Shelf or Santa. Our trips to Yellowstone or just hanging out in the 17728. They make some interesting copy and my friend Jerry Bragalone approves. Thanks again folks. Merry Christmas. Happy New Year. Cheers.
