From the Editor…
Happy New Year!
I
n case you didn’t notice, I’m not Jimmy. No worries, he’ll be back next week, he’s just letting me borrow his space for the week so that I can tell you all about this very special week at Webb Weekly. This week’s issue is just one of the many ways Jimmy helps people and our community in the course of a year. I don’t think he gets enough ‘thank yous’ for it. So, before we get to what’s happening in this issue, I want to say thank you to Jimmy. For all that you do and all the people that you do it for, please know that your efforts are seen and appreciated. So, on to the details about this week’s issue: For the past couple of years, Jimmy has given each full-time employee a page of the paper to donate to the charity of their choice. We all get to pick something that is near and dear to us and donate ad space, editorial space or a combination of both. As you can see on the cover, we have a wide variety of organizations from across the area that we donated space to this week. I’m sure that you are familiar with most, and you can learn about what they do in more detail as you read

as you read through the ads/editorials about these charities, you will consider adding them to your 2020 donation lists if you are able. Happy New Year! Happy New Year to you and yours! Do you have your resolutions ready to go? I barely managed to get everything done in time for Christmas so I haven’t really thought a whole lot about resolutions for the New Year yet. The typical thoughts of eating better and moving more are always on the list, but let’s face it — I like Doritos and naps too much for that to really be a thing. Out and about, or in with friends or family, no matter how you plan to ring in the New Year, please be safe. Holidays like New Year’s have a way of bringing out the worst in people, so in addition to taking care of yourself, keep an eye on those around you. Not only for your safety, but also for theirs. It’s easy to think that it isn’t your responsibility to ‘babysit’ others, but wouldn’t it be worth it if it saves their life or someone else’s? If you are heading out for the evening, please — please — make sure you don’t drink and drive. Download the Uber or Lyft apps before you head out so you can get a safe ride home. Be safe y’all!

Community Solutions For Cats
The Beckoning Cat Project was conceived in 2013 by a small group of individuals and professionals who were concerned about the number of cats in the area that appeared to be without homes, without care, and without concern for their welfare. The problem seemed to be multiplying. Together, with the support and participation of other compassionate people, Beckoning Cat Project was formed.
Beckoning Cat Project promotes and supports the practice of TNR, Trap, Neuter, and Return, as a humane and effective method to control cat overpopulation. Homeless or feral cats are trapped in place, brought to the clinic to be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, given a full check up with a written vet’s report, and returned to the area from which they were trapped. This practice stops the reproduction cycle. The number of homeless cats is reduced.

Beckoning Cat Project
Since January 2014, Beckoning Cat Project has spayed and neutered over 23,000 cats in their low cost, high quality care clinic. BCP accepts only cats in their clinic. The goal is to reduce the population of cats without homes. All cats are welcome for low cost spay or neuter, regardless if they are pets or feral. There are no income or geographic limitations. The clinic also offers limited wellness services including annual vaccines. All cats receiving services must be spayed or neutered.
Looking for something to do indoors during this cold PA winter? Check out Cat Tales Cat Café next to Beckoning Cat Clinic at 1417 East Third Street. A cat café is a place where you can cuddle and play with cats without the every day responsibilities of owning one. You bring the snacks and drinks; the café provides the kitties. Admission is $5 and you have access to all the cats. Tuesdays are free admission day for all seniors, veterans and active military (with ID). The cafe also offers rental of the café, with cats, for birthday parties or other events. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram to see what events are on the calendar. We have cat yoga, bingo, holiday parties and other fun activities with the cats.
Cat Tales Cat Café is always in need of volunteers for the café. Please call 570-505-1473 for more info on visiting, volunteering, or adopting.

The Week’s LION Holiday with a Heart By Larry Stout
I
s there any other holiday that has so many traditions associated with it? Everything from Christmas caroling to baking cookies to candlelight services to Candy Cane Lane, the activities surrounding Christmas and New Years are almost endless. There are personal traditions, like Scott Metzger, the new Lycoming County Commissioner who for the past 39 years now has donned the white beard and red suit to become a very convincing Santa. Scott has played the part of Kris Kringle to schools, parades, and nursing homes. His greatest joy comes from visiting Loyalsock Valley and Lyter Elementary schools. At a recent visit, one adorable little girl was asked what she wanted for Christmas, looked up with her dark brown eyes and innocently said, “Santa, all I want is for all the little boys and girls who don’t have a home to have one.” If not a home, there are those who want to provide a hearty Christmas dinner for those who would not have one. In the late 1970s, Lois Temple
from Clarksville was selling advertising for a local newspaper and one of the clients asked if Lois knew of anyone who provided Christmas dinner for those who would not have one. She responded that she did not know of anyone that did that in the area, but got to thinking that there should be one. So for some 38 years running now, Lois has organized the Spirit of the Seasons Dinner at the Hughesville Fire Hall for anyone who wishes to attend. Donations come in from throughout the region, and even a live band provides entertainment. It has become a legendary event, with over 400 people served on Christmas day. Other organizations in our area host similar events. Christmas dinners are provided in Williamsport by the American Rescue Workers who provide a free Christmas dinner at the Castellano Center for Community Outreach and in Jersey Shore, there is Christmas Eve ham dinner provided by the Trinity United Methodist Church between their Christmas Eve services. The small community of Montgomery has a very long tradition of pro-
viding food and presents on Christmas Eve to needy families in their area. Back in the 1960s, there was a local community grocery store called Hess’s which started giving a free bag of foodstuffs for a special Christmas dinner for those customers who the staff knew were quite needy. When the store went out of business, the idea continued with a Christmas Committee chaired by Nancy Gruver. The program was expanded to provide a full Christmas dinner that would include a turkey and all the fixings along with individually wrapped presents for each child in the family. Nancy headed up the effort for nearly 50 years until her sad passing last year. But others have picked up the baton, and this year Christmas dinners were provided for 167 families and toys were given to 250 children. These wonderful traditions of service that are celebrated all over our region speak volumes of the best of our past. As we look forward to the coming of a new year, hopefully we can continue to keep our servant-minded heritage while pointing toward a better and brighter future. amp Victory is a beautiful 130-acre summer camp in Millville (just a few minutes over the eastern border of Lycoming County) built specifically for children with special needs and serious health issues. Camp Victory is adapted for all abilities – the tree house has a ramp, the zip line and rock-climbing wall have specialty harnesses, the paths are paved, and the list goes on. There’s a ‘Med Shed’ where campers can get the medical attention they need – even treatments like dialysis. “Instead of being the kid with unusual circumstance among their peers, at Camp they are surrounded by other kids in similar circumstances,” explained Kate Pacacha, resource development associate for Camp Victory. “Kids who wouldn’t typically get to enjoy summer camp can come to Camp Victory and enjoy just being kids.”

Camp Victory opened in 1994 and has been growing steadily over the years, adding land and new activities as funds are available. “Camp Victory has been a blessing to my family,” said Megan of Williamsport. “They have given my son Mason, who is blind, a chance to experience adventures I never thought he would have the opportunity to do such as rock climbing, zip lining, paddle boating, archery, and fishing.” 8-year old Mason attends Camp Vision for blind and visually-impaired children, a program of North Central Sight Services.
“This experience has taught him (and me!) that there are no limits on what he can do. We have created priceless memories at Camp Victory as a family beyond my wildest dreams. Every special needs mother’s wish is to see their child happy, joyous, and free and I get that wish here!” Jamie Huntley, executive director of Camp Victory, has seen countless memorable moments in her 21 years there. “I’ve seen a six-year old cancer survivor with one leg amputated scale the rock wall and ring the bell at the top and children on ventilators get in a swimming pool for the very first time in their lives. When our campers are here, they are just kids, not kids defined by their health conditions.” In 2019, Camp Victory was happy to host 1,571 campers with the support of 1,055 volunteer counselors and medical support. Campers come from all over the US, but most are from Pennsylvania and most of those are from the region. Lycoming County typically ranks second in camper attendance population – 10% of campers live in Lycoming County. 13-year old Olivia of Duboistown first came to Camp Victory as a helper with a friend who was a photographer in 2017, certainly not expecting to soon be a camper herself. She was diagnosed with leukemia less than a month later. For the first year of treatment, knowing she could attend Camp Dost in the summer of 2018 was a bright spot for her to look forward to. Camp Dost is a program of the Ronald McDonald House of Danville for children with cancer. “The beauty of Camp Dost, and Camp Victory is that they can go be
kids for a week and do things they can’t normally do at home, swim being the big one for Liv,” said Olivia’s mom, Krista. “She’s so excited to attend every year, and she’s already planning for her graduation from camp in five years and then going right back to be a counselor when she is 18.” Camp Vision, Camp Dost, and several other camps allow siblings to attend with the camper because the serious health condition of one person has an effect on the whole family. Each camp (see sidebar) is independently run and sets its own parameters. Some camps, such as Camp Emerge for families touched by autism, invites the entire family to attend. “Camp Victory is happy to provide the location for all of these terrific individual camps. Continuous maintenance and improvements of our very special camp are quite expensive and we work hard to keep the cost to campers minimal,” said Kathryn Penfield of Williamsport, who volunteers on the board of directors for

County Hall Corner 2019: Not an “Off” Year By Larry Stout
I
n political parlance, an election year that does not have any gubernatorial or national offices on the ballot is considered an “off ” year. This means that the turnout will be expected to be low, as all the races are for the most local, and these generally do not arise much passion in the general electorate. 2019 was expected to be such a year, but turned out to quite the opposite. It started on January 17th when Congressman Tom Marino announced his resignation from office due to a life-threatening illness. This immediately threw open the door for every political wannabe in a fifteen-county area to throw their hat in the ring for a special election that Governor Wolf scheduled in conjunction with the regular primary, May 21st. The Democratic Party decided to choose Marc Friedenberg, a college professor from Penn State, who had previously ran against Marino in the most recent election. The Republican Party had a tougher time, as 24 individuals declared their active interest and another 12 were urged to run but chose not to. On March 2nd, representatives based on population from each of the fifteen counties met in Williamsport to choose
between all these potential congresspersons, and after a long day of speeches and ballots, Fred Keller from Union County was finally selected. He went on to easily defeat Marc Friendenberg in the May election. But not without a little help from a friend — President Donald Trump. The day before the election, President Trump landed Air Force One at the Williamsport Regional Airport and was enthusiastically met by thousands. Most give credit to Trump for one of the largest turnouts in a primary in this region. (And regretfully, not enough credit has gone out to all the agencies in Lycoming County that only received a one week heads-up on the presidential visit, and yet managed this Herculean event without a hiccup.) It is doubtful that Lycoming County will ever see another primary like the one held on May 21st. Besides the drama of the special election for Congress, there were also nine individuals running on the Republican ticket for the two County Commissioner slots. There were the two incumbents, Tony Mussare and Jack McKernan, Williamsport Mayor Gabe Campana, retired Deputy Director of the Adult Probation Office Scott Metzger, Loyalsock Township Su-

pervisor John Bower, Air Force veteran Steve Brady, and Chad Riley, Kathryn Schultz Nassberg, and Todd Lauer. The jostling for position among the candidates through the months leading up to the election were often testy, as the stakes were very high. When the votes were counted, Tony Mussare and Scott Metzger were chosen to represent the Republican Party on the November ballot. Although it did not exactly turn out that way. Three of the primary candidates, Jack McKernan, Steve Brady, and Chad Riley decided to run as write-ins, which caused more than a little consternation among the Republican Party as they were concerned it might open up a door for a second Democratic candidate to be elected. That did not happen, as incumbent Rick Mirabito easily won re-election and Elliott Weiss also running on the Democratic ticket finished a distant fourth between top vote-getter Scott Metzger and second-highest Tony Mussare. This “off ” year had another important political race for the office of Mayor of Williamsport. Two very sharp, aspiring young men; Republican Eric Beiter and Democrat Derek Slaughter, won their respective primaries and battled it out in a hotly contested race leading up to the November election. Both men were well-educated and articulate (not necessarily typical for those in elected office…), but neither had much political

experience under their belts. The debates between the two were intellectually engaging yet quite civil, which hopefully could continue to be a model for others in the future. When the votes were finally counted, Derek Slaughter was the clear choice for the Williamsport voters to serve as their new mayor. In an extremely tight City Council election, incumbent Bonnie Katz was reelected, along with new members Adam Yoder, Vincent Pulizzi, and Jon Mackey. With a new mayor and three new board members, Williamsport is going to have a fresh team on the field to tackle some serious challenges facing the city in 2020. Yes, 2020 awaits us all. The coming presidential election will be one for the history books. That is a story for another day. Happy New Year to all!

Preserving History on the Southside By Scott N. Lowery
I
n the years preceding her passing several years ago longtime South Williamsport resident and Webb Weekly columnist Rosemary Neidig was engaged in a literary project to write a book encompassing the history of the community she loved so well. While she was never able to complete that endeavor, the subject of her fervor remains alive thanks to the interest of others who share her passion of recording the history of the South Williamsport community for future generations to learn from and enjoy. In its relative infancy a fledgling group organized as The South Williamsport Area Historical Collection (SWAHC) has been formed to move forward dedicated to the mission of preserving and sharing the historical legacy and rich cultural heritage of the residents, events, organizations, landmarks and legends of the combined communities of South Williamsport Borough, DuBoistown, Nisbet and Armstrong Township. “Rosemary Cummings Neidig was raised, educated and lived in South Williamsport for many years, so the borough and its people were close to her heart, revealed Nancy Lundquist Baumgartner, one of SWAHC’s original organizers. During 2012, she was writing a memoir, titled “Every Two Minutes.” As friends of Rosemary’s, Margie Bower Potts and I
were helping to edit the book. Following the book’s publication in August, 2013, Rosemary mentioned to me that no history book of South Williamsport existed. I ask her, “Why don’t you write one?” “Rosemary was excited about that idea and immediately began researching the South Williamsport area. Sadly, Rosemary passed away in October of 2014 and her notebook full of stories and interviews were passed on to Margie. Because we did not want to see Rosemary’s work go to waste, we met with Robin Van Auken to discuss the possibility of publishing Rosemary’s material online. “Together, the three of us were joined by Georgie Stroup Ulrich and Chuck Luppert at some subsequent meetings. Those seeds Rosemary planted eventually blossomed into the current South Williamsport Area Historical Collection.” Van Auken, a local author and Hands-onHeritage member and a friend of Neidig, is assisting with the group’s organization as a project consultant. “With Rosemary’s passing, her friends – and the community – inherited the gift to discover and conserve their shared hometown’s history,” Van Auken explained. “Rather than place her notes into a small book to be read once and then shelved, I believed they should become a living, breathing movement, embracing generations through a storytelling project.

This way Rosemary’s story is everyone’s story. “As people join the History Collective, they bring with them an amazing variety of viewpoints that add to the overall knowledge of beloved, but forgotten places, people, groups, and events. Conserving these stories on an encyclopedia website means there is not only a repository for every story, but people can decide which story they want to hear. “Eventually, people will be able to ‘collect’ the stories and photos they love best – the ones that tell their unique history and celebrate their connection with the community – and publish their own book! “This is a new adventure in publishing and I’m excited to help develop it and introduce the concept to the world.” The SWAHC has established a Board of Directors led by president Dori Rankinen, treasurer Chuck Luppert and secretary Carol Waltz, and is composed of general members that include researchers and writers. Monthly meetings are held at the South Williamsport Borough offices the first Thursday of each month at 12 noon which are open to the public. Interested individuals are encouraged and welcomed to attend. “I was contacted by Robin after we had worked together on the South Williamsport WVIA television program that aired earlier this year. She suggested I get involved with the SWAHC group. I do love to organize. I do love a good fund raiser and I think it is so important for
the South Williamsport community area to maintain their heritage,” Rankinen explained. “Once this current generation that has knowledge of so many good stories about their community are gone I haven’t seen a lot from the younger generation looking to preserve the history of the area. It is important that we do so.” Individuals who have a desire of archiving information that has been passed down from generation to generation are encouraged to share those with the SWAHC by attending a monthly meeting, contacting Rankinen or Robin VanAuken or go to the group’s website southwilliamsportareahistoricalcollection. org “It is important to know that individuals do not have to be technologically savvy to get involved or provide information,” Rankinen added. “We can provide that assistance but we are in search of those great stories about the community and we encourage individuals to contact us and share that information.” SWAHC is selling copies of WVIATV’s Our Town program featuring South Williamsport that was premiered this past June. Copies are available for $15.00 or two for $20.00 and may be purchased at the South Williamsport Borough Hall office or by contacting Dori Rankinen, 570-7722423. SWAHC’s next monthly meeting will be held Thursday, January 9, Noon, at the South Williamsport Borough Hall. The meeting is open to the public.

Keystone Elk Country Alliance
The Keystone Elk Country Alliance is a non-profit 501(c)(3) wildlife conservation organization that focuses our resources on Pennsylvania’s Elk Country and the Elk Country Visitor Center located in Benezette. Our mission is “to conserve and enhance Pennsylvania’s elk country for future generations.” And we accomplish our mission through our three priorities, conservation education, habitat stewardship and permanent land protection; with conservation education being our number one priority. Our Conservation Education department’s distance learning program allows us to bring Elk Country to schools and civic groups that are unable to visit due to geographic or financial constraints. Our Conservation Education staff reaches out through online technologies like Skype or Zoom to complete our unique programs with the participants live. Our traveling elk trunk is shipped to the groups in advanced and packed full of antlers, an elk hide, bones and other informative items, for a true hands-on experience. We continue to grow and build our Conservation Education program and in 2019 alone, we have reached over 3,400 students through our Distance Learning Program and over 27,000 through our programs and impromptu sessions at the Elk Country Visitor Center. We also held four different Educator Workshops and our first ever Summer Elk Camp in 2019. Our efforts of wise land stewardship are spreading across Elk Country. We are working closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Pennsylvania Game Commission to enrich habitat for elk and other wildlife through mowing, planting and other projects. We also have expanded these efforts by working with private land owners on a number of projects. In 2019, we enhanced 425.5 acres of land in Elk Country, and that brought us to a total of 3532.5 acres over the past 10 years. The Elk Country Visitor Center is an exceptional venue that provides a consistent conservation education message for hundreds of thousands of visitors to our region. We strongly believe that the Elk Country Visitor Center is a world class experience that helps to build bridges of education and understanding between urban and suburban environments. In 2019, we welcomed over 510,000 visitors to the Elk Country Visitor Center, making it our busiest year since opening in 2010.We are committed to working with our many Conservation Partners as well as the local communities to make the Keystone Elk Country Alliance and the Elk Country Visitor Center a success. Over the past 10 years, the Keystone Elk Country Alliance has developed and surpassed expectations of what anyone could have imagined and without the support of our tireless volunteers, it would not have been possible. Our volunteers assist in a variety of ways, both at the ECVC, as well as other locations across the state. Our lead volunteer group has many years of experience raising private dollars to enhance elk country across the US. They continue to host successful Conservation Banquets every year and we thank them for their continued support as those who patronize our fundraising events.

There are usually 30 to 40 dogs, 60 more or cats, and a number of small animals awaiting homes at the Lycoming County SPCA. Pictures of all of the animals available for adoption can be viewed at www.lycomingspca.org. “Animal rescue is very rewarding”, states Victoria Stryker, Executive Director. “Each animal has a story; whether it is surrendered by its owner, lost, or removed from a neglectful or abusive situation. We encourage people to visit with the animals in person. Once you look into those big, brown eyes-you won’t be able to resist.”

Faith Conversations…
Fear Not!
“A
Charlie Brown Christmas” first aired in 1965, one year after I was born. Even back then Charles Shultz had to put up a fight to include the scene of Linus reciting Luke 2:8-14. Both his producer and his animator believed Shultz was crossing a line by having the Bible quoted to such an extent in a children’s cartoon. The executives at CBS were also reluctant. Shultz stood his ground saying, “We must tell this story. If we don’t, who will?”
54 years later, the scene of a little boy with a security blanket standing center stage is still cherished by people of all ages. A few weeks ago, my wife pointed out something I had never noticed before: While Linus is reciting the Scripture, he suddenly drops his blanket when he quotes the angel saying, “Fear not!” Every Peanuts fan knows that Linus and his blanket are inseparable. By having Linus drop his blanket at that precise moment, Charles Shultz was mak-
ing a powerful statement regarding the confidence we can have in the presence of Jesus Christ. Shultz took a big risk by fighting for that scene, and maybe the blanket drop was his way of expressing his own faith in Tim God. Sure, we know the Hartzell story has a happy ending, but at that moment, Shultz had no idea if it would be a hit or a flop. He took the risk anyway. One thing he knew for certain was that in the presence of Jesus Christ, he had nothing
to fear. My friends, the words “fear not” are only spoken when there is a threat, something to be feared. And whether those words are said by an angel, the Holy Spirit or a fellow believer, their intent is to bring calm into the midst of a very real storm. There is much in this world to be afraid of, but in the presence of Jesus Christ, we have nothing to fear. There is likely something threatening you right now. As the shepherd of a local body of Christ, I learned a long time ago that no one sails through this life un-

FAITH
scathed. Since the fall of Adam and Eve way back in the Garden of Eden, this world has proven to be anything but our safe haven. Life here is filled with thunderstorms that seem to pop up without warning. It is in the midst of these thunderstorms that we hear the calm and reassuring voice of the angel declare, “Fear not!” As David wrote the shepherd’s psalm, his mind wandered back to times when he encountered severe trials – and he had plenty of them. He penned the words, “Even though I walk through the
darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.” David had plenty to be afraid of, but in God’s presence, he knew he had nothing to fear. And fellow believer, neither do you. Listen, Jesus promised that He would never leave you or forsake you. In His presence you are safe and secure – even when it seems that all hell is breaking loose. God is on the throne. Never forget that. As His child, He is very aware of what is
taking place in your life. Do you feel that God has forgotten you or that He no longer cares? Is the thunder loud? Is it cancer? Disease? Addiction? A lost job? A straying child? A broken relationship? Listen closely. Echoing above and beyond the storm is the voice of the angel declaring, “Fear not!” Can you hear it? Are you willing to hear it? You are God’s child! Listen and take heart! Jesus has overcome the world! I must confess that this article was not easy to write. I know that what I have written is true, but living it is a whole other story. I’m sure we agree that the voice of the angel is not always easy to
MURRAY
hear. Together, we must agree to listen more closely. The truth of God’s Word must inform and embolden our faith, even as the thunder rolls. Listen. Listen closely. Can you hear it? The angel is declaring, “Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.” My New Year’s prayer for you is that the year 2020 will be a year of blessing and peace and calm. And if it is not, then I pray that the voice of the angel will fill your ears and your heart with hope and trust. Fear not!

T
he Williamsport Planning Mill, at Campbell and First Streets and six frame homes on First Street were destroyed by a raging, spectacular fire early yesterday morning. The loss has been placed at between $350,000 and $400,000 by Lawrence E. Krimm, plant manager. The fire claimed one life. Frank Fulkrod, 63, residing at 760 First Street, in the block east of the mill, died of a heart attack when sparks ignited his house. The blaze to the house was extinguished with slight damage. The temperature hovered at 8 above most of the early morning hours and a strong wind whipped the flames and blazing embers over a wide area. An ember dropped on the former Valley Iron Works building on West Street, several blocks east, but the fire was extinguished by residents in the vicinity before there was much damage. A few minutes before the blaze was
discovered at 6:15 in the planning mill, Companies 1, 2, 3, 6 and 7 and the ladder truck had been summoned to 600 Campbell Street, where flames had been found on the roof of the large apartment building, at one time used as the Home for the Friendless. Five minutes later the alarm was sounded for the lumber fire, several companies were rushed to the later outbreak and with the sounding of the general alarm firemen from South Williamsport, Montoursville and Loyalsock Township responded. At the request of Williamsport Fire Chief Michael E. Clark, firemen from Jersey Shore responded and were held in reserve. The origin of the planning mill fire is not known. The plant had been closed since last Wednesday, when inventory was being taken. An engineer who was acting as watchman, discovered the blaze on the second floor of the southeast corner of the building. He sent in an alarm on the Gamewell fire alarm system.

Packs are made of ballistic nylon, include straps for a bedroll, an integrated poncho to keep both the individual and their possessions dry and anti-theft webbing loops so the pack can be hooked onto an arm or leg when needed. This street-level survey is required by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), the largest funding source for services and programs for homeless individuals. The information gathered through this process influences the services HUD provides and is used in creating regional planning efforts to work toward the goal of ending homelessness During the PIT count, individuals are often found in tents, in uninhabitable structures, at campgrounds, under bridges and along the river. the way to self-sufficiency all while focusing on maintaining sobriety. Residents learn important life skills such as budgeting, parenting, healthy relationships and how to be a good rental tenant. The goal of Liberty House is for women to break free from the chains of substance abuse disorder and learn to be independent while empowering them to believe that they deserve happiness and success. Women experiencing homelessness or interested in entering Liberty House should call Coordinated Entry at 2-1-1. A Liberty House Success A Williamsport native, Amelia grew up in a loving family. She struggled with alcohol from a young age, and after job loss, an abusive partner introduced her to drugs with the promise of easing her stress. She quickly fell into a deep addiction, leading to destructive decisions. Amelia was incarcerated and lost custody of her 2 daughters. While Amelia’s mother gladly provided a home to the girls, the trauma of separation was hard on the whole family and when Amelia entered Liberty House after prison, her very first goal was staying clean so her daughters could live with her again. Amelia completed every step of her drug court program and worked hand-in-hand with her case manager to make the best decisions for her family. Because of the secure, monitored facility the YWCA offers, Amelia quickly began having visitation of her daughters in Liberty House and then over-night visits. When she was ready, her

Charles came to Wise Options – abused by a family member, who was charged with helping him around his home. Brave enough to seek help, Charles sought shelter at the YWCA where compassionate advocates walked him hand-in-hand through the court process, helping him get a Protection From Abuse order that gave him peace of mind and the safety of his home again. During his time at Wise Options, Charles rebuilt his confidence through counseling, life-skills and the 24/7 access to advocates. “I never expected people to be so kind, to do so much for me,” he said. “I have happiness now and I can sleep without fear.” The Power of Donations Every dollar given to the YWCA protects innocent lives, provides redemption and helps prevent future violence. The YWCA Boutique is a high-quality gently-used clothing store located in the YWCA that relies on donated items to serve those in need. The Boutique provides every single YWCA client whatever clothing they may need at no cost – whether it is pajamas, jeans or a suit for a job interview. To change the world and give safety and hope – or to learn more about the YWCA - visit our website today at www.ywcawilliamsport.org. If you’d like to donate to The Boutique, donations can be brought to the YWCA Monday-Friday, 8-5 or Saturdays from 10-2.

he YWCA Northcentral PA is the only safe shelter for adults to become strong, independent survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, violent crimes and addiction in our community . Within our walls, each individual in crisis finds dignity, selfworth and the future they feared was lost forever. For 126 years, the YWCA has utilized donations and best-practices to adapt to the most pressing needs of women in Williamsport. Starting off as a social space, the mission quickly began to focus on helping women and girls working in factories. From there the organization has bloomed into a place where women, men and children can find safety, encouragement and the tools to build a bright future. Today those needs are met through two cornerstone programs, Liberty House and Wise Options. Liberty House Liberty House is a sober-living community providing a clean slate and safe environment for homeless women and their children to regain confidence, life skills and rebuild their families. The dorm-style living is comfortable, homey and conducive to fostering healthy life-style choices. In the last year, 65 women and 17 children have found their self-worth and independence in Liberty House. While every client comes to our program with unique obstacles, the path is similar for each: A supportive case manager helps each woman identify and achieve goals on
daughters stayed with her regularly, while Amelia found permanent housing. Next week, Amelia will move into her own apartment – with custody of her daughters and the trio will focus on bonding and building an incredible future together. “I wouldn’t be able to have my girls. I couldn’t do any of this without the YW,” Amelia said recently, wiping the tears from her eyes. “This place is incredible. I made mistakes in my life, but the YWCA means I can move past them and we can move forward together.” Wise Options Wise Options protects the lives of innocent survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault and other crimes by giving adults and children emergency shelter, Protection from Abuse orders, and compassionate, wrap-around services meeting their needs to insure the safety of survivors. Wise Options provides secure emergency shelter, counseling, group therapy, a secure child-custody location and legal advocacy program. All services are free and open to the public for all people. One of the most utilized Wise Options services is the 24/7 confidential crisis hotline that is always answered by a compassionate advocate there to listen. If you or someone you know is in crisis, please call 1-800-326-8483. Wise Options is committed to prevention of future violence, thanks to our medical advocate and prevention educator who both provide free education to work places, schools, medical professionals and more. ‘Daniel Tiger’ and Friends are Coming to Williamsport
N
orthcentral Pennsylvania will be home to countless smiles and warm hearts to begin the new year, thanks to some new “neighbors.” “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: Neighbor Day,” based on the Emmy Award-winning and top-rated “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood” animated television series that airs daily on PBS Kids, will begin its national tour at Williamsport’s Community Arts Center on Thursday, Jan. 16, at 6:30 p.m. Daniel Tiger, along with family and friends such as O the Owl, Miss Elaina, Katerina Kittycat and Prince Wednesday, will take the audience on an interactive adventure to the Neighborhood of Make Believe. Along the way, they will share stories of friendship, exhibit kindness to others and celebrate fresh experiences. The live show features new songs and fan favorites from the TV series, including “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” made famous by children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers, the creator and host of the iconic “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” That series inspired the creation of “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.” Four-year-old Daniel Tiger is the son of Daniel Striped Tiger from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Since its inception in 2016, “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live” tour has generated more than $12.8 million in ticket sales throughout North America. Following the Williamsport performance, the latest tour will visit 50-plus cities through May. Schyler Rice, who portrays Katerina Kittycat,
discusses her background and what the Williamsport-area audience can expect on Jan. 16. After growing up in northern California, you earned your bachelor’s degree in musical theater from the University of Miami in 2015. What inspired you to seek a career in the performing arts? My whole life, I gravitated toward music. I’ve always loved singing. I played the little redhead in my kindergarten musical, and I think that’s what started the bug for me. As I got older, my mom commuted with me to Redding, the closest city to our town, and I started to do ballet. I got into opera, as well. It seemed like the natural thing to do, so I applied and auditioned for different musical theater programs. And Miami just worked out. I never expected to go to Florida to study musical theater, but it just sort of happened. Was the first tour of “Daniel Tiger Live” your first job after college? What led you to return for the latest tour? The first tour was my first gig after college. About two weeks after I moved to New York, I got Daniel Tiger. Once I got it, I realized that being part of a family show, something for kids, was up my alley. I loved it so much! I actually did the tour twice, so obviously I really enjoyed it. Then I moved back to New York. I did a gig as a theme park performer where I got to be a princess, and then I decided to move back home. I was booking a lot of children’s theater and realized how much I loved working with kids. A preschool position fell into place, and I ended up
teaching preschool for about a year and a half. I was planning to get into performing again in some sort of capacity, and I decided it was time to come back for another run. What makes “Daniel Tiger Live” so special for you? The fact that we get the opportunity to spread Fred Rogers’ message of love to kids. I love being able to play a 4-year-old kittycat who loves to dance. It’s a great character. She is sort of like a kid version of me. I’ve always loved ballet. I’ve always loved kitties. You have all these diverse characters loving each other and spreading that message of kindness. And getting to meet kids throughout the U.S. is awesome. One of my favorite parts about the show is the meet and greets when we get to interact with different kids. It’s just so gratifying because when you perform for adults, you can’t really tell what they’re thinking. When you’re performing for kids, it’s right there on their faces and in their eyes. How does the fact that many in the audience already know the characters impact your performance on stage? There are certain parts of Katerina that I try to make sure that I stay true to. But we also get to play around with the characters and make it a little different, so the audience has something that’s a little fresh. I definitely carry with me the fact that it’s Fred Rogers’ characters. Katerina’s mom is Henrietta Pussycat. The grandparents in the audience know that character from “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.” Now, the kids know Katerina from “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood.” So it’s something that all generations are somewhat familiar with in the audience. One of my favorite parts of the show is one of the last songs, “It’s You I Like.” You can hear the
audience – the grandparents, the parents and the kids – singing along, and it’s just the sweetest thing. You mentioned the show’s theme of love and kindness toward others. Do you think sharing those values on stage to a multigeneration audience can help combat the hateful political discourse prevalent in today’s society? I hope so. This particular tour is about Neighbor Day. It all starts with Daniel giving his teacher a sunflower, and the other little kids start wanting to do small acts of kindness. I would like to think that it would put things in perspective for the parents. And the kids being exposed to that message at a young age, I would hope it would grow with them. In the future, it could help people be more peaceful. How challenging is it to put on your cat costume, and how long does it take? It does take quite a while to put on all the makeup. That part is fun for me because I love doing stage makeup. The costume is a little bit challenging. The costume is very, very hot. During the second tour, Mom Tiger and I would go to this enormous fan during intermission. We ended up calling it the “gratitude fan” because we would lie next to it and be so thankful for cool air! I really enjoy my tail. It’s very fluffy. The feet are big. You have to keep it all together because the kids don’t think of it as a costume. They think of it as part of you. Altogether, to get the makeup on and the costume on, it takes about an hour. For ticket information on “Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood Live: Neighbor Day” at the Community Arts Center on Jan. 16, visit www.caclive.com or call the box office at 570326-2424.

we are ringing in 2020 already. Where on earth does the time go? I don’t know why, but I have this feeling it’s going to be a big year. 2020, I mean just the sound of it makes me feel like it means business. The best part is I am going to be an Aunt again here in June! My brother and his wife are expecting their second child, and we are all so excited! Nothing like a new baby in the family! The new year will also bring me some new job opportunites I was offered, which I am very excited about! Being able to write for the Webb has given me a new path I never knew I could have. I mean, Andrea’s Country Home Cookin is out there for sure. All over the internet, in reaching almost 4,000 folks’ kitchens, with my cookbook all over the world, and 213,000+ fans on Facebook. Now followers on ACHC Instagram and YouTube! Yes, I said YouTube! You can now
watch me on YouTube and subscribe to my channel “Andrea’s Country Home Cookin.” We have posted about eight videos with a total of 1,500 views in a little over a month ago. I always say, we are best friends, she just don’t know it yet! Anyone out there got pull with the Food Network Channel or know her personally!? Remember me, hahaha!! I’ve always said, even having my own little show on WVIA would suffice for this small hometown girl. But hey, I’ll take making

HOME COOKIN homemade videos on YouTube that people are enjoying watching, and I am helping them bring homemade meals to their table. That’s what I am about guys, bringing family around the table with delicious food after busy days. Family time is so important! That time is special in these busy lives we lead. I want to thank Jim Webb for giving me this amazing opportunity, and for all of you who read, watch, and have bought my cookbook at the Rust in Shine in Willliamsport or over the past years. 2019 was a pretty awesome year, and I’m ready to see what the year 2020 has in store for me. Wishing you all a wonderful new year, too! I’m gonna start you all off with a delicious high in fat appetizer that is perfect for any New Years Party! I mean, you can’t go wrong with pig wrapped in more pig. Enjoy!! Brown Sugar Glazed Bacon Wrapped Sausages • 1 package (16 Oz. Size) Little Smokies Sausages • 1 pound Bacon Strips • 1 cup Brown Sugar, For Sprinkling
Preheat oven to 400ºF. Cut bacon slices in half and wrap each smokie with a half strip of bacon. Place all the wrapped smokies in a single layer in a baking dish, or rimmed sheet pan. Take some brown sugar and sprinkle evenly over the smokies. Bake for about 20–30 minutes or until bacon is nice and crisp (bake times will vary). These babies won’t last long, and don’t count on leftovers.

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…
Makeup Tips for Women in Their 40s
I
n 1513, explorers from Spain stumbled upon The Fountain of Youth, an iconic spring in what would later become Florida, that promised eternal juvenescence for anyone who dared to bathe in or sip from it. Five centuries later, those same promises now come in the form of beauty products, many of which swear they offer similar, if not dubious results. However, the 1500s have come and gone, and the beauty of the natural aging process is something that women are now embracing with open arms. Of course, natural aging doesn’t mean completely abandoning makeup; in fact, a key ingredient to maturing in style is flawless makeup. And, for women over 40, it isn’t as complicated as it may seem. In reality, it’s really just about simplification. The most noticeable changes that happen to skin as it matures are the development of lines, wrinkles, and sometimes an increase in pore size. Additionally, there’s an overall dulling of the skin, and while many women try to combat that by piling on the
cosmetics, the secret to keeping makeup looking fresh is a simple matter of getting back to the basics. As I approach my 40s, here are a few basic techniques that I’m starting to use. Before you even start applying makeup, prep your skin with a hydrating, as opposed to matte primer. With age, increased dulling of the skin calls for more hydration — and your primer can aide with that. A good primer will also help protect your skin from pollutants and smooths the texture. The Algenist Pore Corrector/Anti-Aging primer from Sephora is great for women in their 40s who may also be fighting the occasional breakout, as it helps to absorb excess oil while smoothing skin to prep for makeup. Or over on Amazon, there’s Jane Iredale Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener, which is great for duller skin, as it creates a bright layer for makeup to lay on top of. Once your face is prepped, only use foundation where it’s needed, if
at all. Too much of a base won’t necessarily make for a smooth finish. A full face of foundation can settle into lines and end up looking cakey and crepey. Instead, use a damp sponge or fluffy Bernadette brush to apply a sheer Ulsamer wash where needed. Or use a brush with a small amount of foundation for the entire face, with the makeup tapering off around the perimeter of the face. I’m a fan of the Sonia Kashuk brushes at Target for foundation, bronzer, and blush application. There’s also the famous egg-shaped Beauty Blender sponges available from Sephora. After you have the correct amount of coverage, add luminosity to your skin with a cream-based blush, especially here in the winter. Blush can help wake up a face, as well as provide definition to the cheek bones, and what woman (no matter her age) doesn’t want a more definitive cheek bone! Smile when applying blush to make sure it hits at the apple of the cheeks. Try mixing highlighter
with blush for even more of a glow. Glossier’s “cloud paint” in storm is a gel-cream blush in a warm rose shade, perfect for the colder months. I also like Milk Makeup’s lip + cheek perk, which works both as a lip and blush stick to hydrate skin with a sheer flush. Next up is eyes. And just like the rest of your face, you’ll need to prep before applying cosmetics. I’m a big fan of under-eye sheet masks. E.L.F. offers affordable hydrogel under-eye masks that will plump, moisturize, and soothe the area. Regularly hydrating your under-eye will help you avoid concealer, especially for daytime looks. I rarely use concealer under my eyes, as it tends to settle in to fine lines and weigh down my face. Of course, you don’t want to leave your eyes completely bare. However, eyelid skin tends to grow looser with age, hence we need to be more precise with eyeshadow application. Be sure to keep the shadow on your lids rather than reaching into the crease. Also try switching to softer tones, like Covergirl’s 3 kit shadow in shimmering sands, and keep the darkest shade closer to the lash line,

example, when people want to make lifestyle changes they often begin a walking program first as movement begets the energy to become more active and make other changes such as a more nutritious diet. The Second bold statement I will make is that virtually everyone should enlist in some formal strength training. In our mechanized society, modern conveniences are intended to give us more time. Instead they have have allowed us to cram more things into our already hectic day. We drive everywhere and park as close as possible to our destination. Computers allow us to shop for everything online, in the convenience of our own homes. Jobs that once involved manual labor are now automated and we are replaced by robots. In light of these changes, good and bad, I feel that it is necessary to devote a small portion of one’s day to strength and conditioning. In part 2 of this article I will endeavor to boil the fundamentals of strength training down to a handful of simple keys that should get you well on your way to making it a regular part of your life. In my opinion strength is the foundation of health and one of the main keys in slowing down the decline in mobility associated with aging. I have said this before over the years and it is a statement that I still stand by. I know this is a bold statement but I have observed its truth time and time again. When I say strength I am using the most basic definition; the ability to move one’s self or manipulate their environment. This makes strength different to everyone and also relevant to everyone. For some, it might mean the ability to get out of a chair, to walk, to take a flight of stairs, or to lift a box. For others it may be to lift heavy weights, to wrestle, or to compete in some other athletic event. Ultimately strength gives us the command over ourselves and our environment that allows us to do the things that give us joy. This is in no way to discount the benefits of eating well, getting a good night’s sleep, or performing some other type of formal exercise. My statement is simply that if a person lacks the basic strength to move, activities of daily living become difficult and life is less enjoyable. In addition, a basic level of strength seems to be the catalyst for all of the other things we can control to keep ourselves healthy and living well. For

Ten New Year’s Resolutions For the Whole Family By Elizabeth Klucka, DO Primary Care, UPMC
N
ew Year’s resolutions can be helpful for developing healthy habits, and habits are easier to stick to if you’re not in it alone. Why not try resolutions the whole family can be involved with? They can be excellent motivators for parents trying to start their kids on some healthier habits. When you start to think about cre-
ating these resolutions, it is important to not push your goals on the whole family. Make choosing these resolutions a family affair — it will only work if every family member feels invested in the goal. Here are 10 ideas to help get you and your family started with creating new, healthier habits in 2020: Limit Screen Time Parents are usually just as guilty as their kids for walking around
IT’S NOT JUST ABOUT THE WAY YOUR LEGS LOOK, BUT HOW THEY FEEL
Do you have restless legs? Do your legs feel tired, achy and ‘heavy’ by the end of the day? Do you get swelling, itching or tingling of the legs as the day goes on? Do you have varicose or spider veins? All of these symptoms can be caused by venous insufficiency. Treatment can improve your leg health and many treatments are covered by insurance
Call for a FREE Screening Exam to find out if you have venous insufficiency
looking at their phones and other devices. Most cell phones now have a screen-time tracker, so you can track and limit the amount of time you spend on your screen. While the internet is a part of our life, there should be a limit on the amount of time you spend staring into your phone, laptop, desktop computer, and even television. Look at your current usage, and establish limits to reduce dependence on screens. Consider replacing screen time with fun family activities such as board games, art projects, or reading time. Don’t Sleep with Your Phone According to a 2019 survey, nearly 40% of kids and teens keep their mobile phones within reach of their bed. Kids are also twice as likely as their parents to have their phone in bed with them. We can all make excuses as to why we need our phone in the bedroom — it is our alarm clock, it is our only phone for emergencies — stop making excuses. The bedroom is for sleeping, and having your phone nearby can interrupt healthy sleep. If you must have it in your room, plug it in across the room, not with-
in arm’s reach, and consider your devices “do not disturb” function during certain hours of the day. Avoid Texting and Using Your Phone In the Car We all know it isn’t safe to text and drive, but just using the cell phone in the car can be a distraction for everyone. Use the time in the car to concentrate on the road or talk to your kids in the back seat. Drive time can also be a bonding time for the whole family. Exercise Together Exercising together gets everyone up and moving. According to the Center for Disease Control, 30.9% of adults in Pennsylvania are obese, and Pennsylvania ranks 9th in the nation for childhood obesity. Try a family exercise plan. Local gyms and studios offer a wide range of classes, and many activities are available on the internet so you can easily create an exercise class right in your living room. Try something new, and work up a sweat and potentially some laughs. Eat Dinner Together

RESOLUTIONS Eating together means sitting at the same table together, not just eating at the same time. Eating dinner together is important for many reasons. Not only is this precious family time spent together, you also have the opportunity to promote healthy eating habits. Since you are planning a family meal, now is the time to add more fruits and vegetables to the menu. Try a plant-based meal one night a week to show your family that vegetables can be a tasty menu option.
Eliminate Soda A 12-ounce can of soda contains approximately 40 grams of sugar — equivalent to 10 teaspoons. Soda is loaded with sugar and provides no nutritional value. The more soda you have in your diet, you increase your risk for obesity, high blood sugar, and developing diabetes. Switch out your sugary drinks for water. Not into plain water? Consider adding fresh fruit to your water for natural flavoring – or try seltzer water which can give you the fun bubbles found
in soda. Switching regular soda to diet can actually make you hungrier, so it best to avoid any kind of soda. Limit Fast Food Sometimes your lifestyle demands a quick meal. As you run from basketball practice to band concerts, you just need to get food in your stomach. The key is to limit the amount of fast food your family consumes. Put a limit on how often you hit the drive-thru, and plan when possible to have healthy snacks or portable meals perfect for on-the-go. Start a Weekly Family Night Family time should be quality time — time that you spend building memories which your kids will carry with them throughout life. Whether you plan a movie night, game night, a simple craft you can all enjoy, or a quiet reading hour, it is important to have planned family time. Cherish the time you have together and make sure to incorporate some laughter. Volunteer as a Family Teaching your kids the importance of giving back should start at a young age. Most communities have families in need of support and
services. Check with local churches, community organizations, or at the local hospital — there may be an event you can make even more special by lending a hand. Start a Gratitude Jar It is easy to get caught up in complaining about what is wrong in life, but we all have something we can be grateful for every day. Start a gratitude jar. Grab a container from the cupboard and some small sheets of paper. Have every family member write something they are grateful for every week and read them back at the end of the month, year, or whenever your family may not be feeling so grateful. New Year’s resolutions are a great way not only to let your children participate in an annual tradition, but it can spark a conversation that gets the whole family on a path to having a healthier and happier new year. The Roving Sportsman… The Sunday Buck
Are you looking to remodel a room in your house?
he month was December. The year was 2017. Pennsylvania remains one of very few states that still prohibits Sunday hunting for deer. It is not often that a hunter has the chance of taking a “buck of a lifetime” which is why the term was coined. I had been hunting at one of my favorite “secret spots” on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and had seen several good bucks. But it was late Saturday afternoon when a giant 8-pointer passed through a small opening and made me realize that this was a buck I really wanted to target. The problem was that I couldn’t return to hunt the next day because it was Sunday, and in Pennsylvania there was no deer hunting on Sunday. It was truly a gut-wrenching dilemma. I obviously wanted to follow all the game laws, but this was truly a special buck, and I was sure he was hanging out in the area and very well might present a shot the next day — Sunday! The place I was hunting was remote,
and I was certain no wardens would ever venture there. I wrestled with my decision, but in the end I decided to hunt for the buck the next morning, regardless of Pennsylvania’s ban on Sunday hunting. I arrived at my hunting spot well before daylight. Only a slight sliver of moon hung low in the Eastern sky, and under the stars overhead I went straight to my work. I had decided to “double down.” Not only was I hunting on Sunday, but I had also planned to sweeten up the area by scattering some shelled corn, not so much to attract any deer, but to hold them for a steady standing shot if they came across the enticement. I returned to my blind and settled in for what might be an all day wait for “Mr. Big.” An hour passed until the skies began to brighten behind me to the east, revealing the landscape I would be watching in hopes of having some success today. I was in a brushy blind in the center of an old pasture, with visibility for several hundred yards in all direction. Throughout the pasture were old oak trees which had dropped
had thickened to an overcast layer that kept the temperature from rising to above freezing and the calm wind provided great conditions for the deer to be up and moving all day long. By 4:00 p.m., and with the sun soon to begin settling in the western sky, I had counted more than 25 does and yearlings, along with 7 bucks ranging from a broken-antlered spike to a pair of symmetrical 8-pointers. Then, in the last remaining light, the six deer which were still in the field — which included 2 mature bucks — all raised their heads simultaneously and
looked to the north. The two mature bucks quickly ran from the field and away from the incoming deer. Suddenly, there he stood — the huge wide and heavy racked 8 pointer I had been waiting patiently for all day, and for the first time, I observed a 9-inch drop tine extending down on his left antler! The four remaining deer in front of me were glued to watching him slowly enter the field as I shouldered by rifle and centered the crosshairs of the scope behind his front leg. Flame flew from the end of the barrel in the dwindling light as the buck took one leap and then
crumbled to the ground. I eagerly raced to where he lay — only to discover that he had landed dead center in the middle of a huge clump of cactus! Cactus? Yes, you read that correctly. You see, I was actually in San Saba county, Texas when this all happened! All throughout this hunt I had daydreamed about “what if ” I had been in Pennsylvania and wanted to hunt this big buck. But, fortunately for me, I was in the Texas hill country, in a state where baiting and Sunday hunting have been legal forever. Thank you Texas!

their annual crop of acorns that the deer had been feeding on, along with the lush grass. Beyond the pasture, there were more oak trees and tall brush that prevented seeing any approaching deer. It was right at daybreak that the first deer arrived. There was a pair of does, each with two fawns, and then a third doe appeared. Thirty minutes later, two more yearlings and a nice 6-point buck entered the pasture. They trotted out to join the other deer, which had already found the shelled corn and were busy enjoying this newly discovered food. Throughout the morning the clouds

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…
The Electronics of Ice Fishing
W
hat does electronics have to do with icefishing? Well, actually quite a bit these days; in fact batteries and electronics play a big role in almost everything we do these days. Just the other day I had to get a tiny battery replaced in my wife’s car so she could start it before she goes out on cold mornings and don’t forget to charge your phone each night either. Well guess what, even the “Frozen Chosen” have opted to make more use of electronics out on the ice. In the “old days”, I’m talking back in the 60s, ice fishermen poked a hole in the ice using a metal spud bar; it was hard work and very noisy as well as sloppy but it got the job done. Then along came hand ice augers;

these devices drilled a hole much quicker and cleaner and every serious ice angler had one. Eventually many of the more avid ice fishermen switched to the more efficient and also more Ken expensive gas powered Hunter ice augers. While they drilled a hole fairly quickly and with a bit more ease they too had their hang-ups. For one thing the gas powered augers were much heavier to lug out on the ice and of course you had to keep them fueled and ready to run-if it didn’t start you were out of luck. Bring on the battery operated ice auger. While these augers are similar to the gas powered augers in appearance they are smaller, lighter, quieter and probably faster. Along the same lines was the introduction of the hand held battery operated drill-

fished it some more. This process continued until we got some action and then we concentrated at that depth. To some degree we still practice a similar technique but now we can “see” the depth we are fishing in and we can even “see” the fish or at least the marks that represent the fish. Enter the portable, battery operated fish locater or depth finder. These are the same devices found on many fishermen’s boats except they are designed for the ice fisherman. I usually drill three holes fairly close to each other; the depth finder goes in the middle hole and I rig an ice-fishing rod for the holes on either side. The beauty of these electronics is that you can determine where the fish are in the water column much quicker than the old techniquesof course that doesn’t mean you are going to catch those fish. Throw in your phone with GPS and a pair of electric socks and you have entered the electronic age of ice-fishing.

that’s right, a carpenters drill with a 20 volt lithium battery and a simple adapter that fits on in place of the hand device atop the drill bit. These drills are very light and more compact and easy to transport and they drill very effectively; I can drill a hole as fast or even faster than the average gas powered ice auger. On a single battery I can drill enough holes to keep a half-dozen fishermen busy all day and still have power left at the end of the day. I also carry an extra battery just in case but I’ve yet to use it. Not only has electronics changed the way we get to the fish but it’s also changed the way we find or locate the fish we are after. In the “old days” we drilled a hole, hooked a lead weight on our rod or tip-up and dropped it down the hole to determine the depth. We would often start by fishing our jigs and bait a few inches off the bottom; if we got no hits we moved the lure up a bit in the water column and

How About a Resolution?
H
financial goal to either save more APPY NEW YEAR! money or spend less of it. Like when you do Statistics indicate 41% of the something for the first American population will make time, it seemed a bit a New Year’s resolution, By strange to write the date 2020 as January 7, 72% will have kept that I prepared for this first column of resolution. At six months, 44% will the new year. Most likely many of still be keeping same. However, by us will have a few ‘date stumbles’ the end of the year, only 8% will be when we write our first check or fill able to say they kept the resolution out information at the beginning of the entire year. In keeping with what is not only a new year but also Scott sports wagering parlance – bet the a new decade. Think about that, Lowery under. those new year’s babies of the Y2K Wouldn’t it be much more fun to hysteria will soon be 20 year olds! The often-used sports chant of ‘overrated’ make a resolution for someone else to keep? could just as easily be applied to the fuss While you are thinking that one over, I’ll go made over the clock striking midnight on ahead and start the game. I am making a New Year’s resolution for December 31st. It sure is good we all made it to another year and it’s nice to share Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob the occasion with family and friends, but Manfred hereby requesting that he resolve spare me the ‘ball-dropping frenzy’ that to revoke his stated plan to eliminate 42 culminates in New York City’s Times Square existing Minor League Baseball teams across where hundreds of thousands of people mill the country by 2021. In case you are not aware of the about like grazing cattle for hours in a huge roped-off pen void of restroom facilities Commissioner’s grand plan, MLB’s contract waiting for the descent of a huge lighted ball. with Minor League Baseball expires at the However, I would like to have the Depends conclusion of the 2020 playing season. His rationale involves around the following; MLB concession for that one. Regardless of how you may choose to is losing money based upon the working welcome in 2020 many will begin the year by agreements MLB teams have with their making some sort of New Year’s resolution. Minor League affiliates, a small percentage If you are making a list and checking it twice of those players playing in the low-level the most common made resolutions include Minor League ever make it to the Major exercising more, losing weight, getting League, facilities at some Minor League organized, learning a new skill or hobby, locals are below the standards desired and living life to the fullest and some sort of the travel distances between communities in

were the top teams in the league in 2019 attendance figures. While it may, or may not have any bearing, the Houston Astros are believed to be one of the MLB teams most supportive of Manfred’s plan. Since 1990 there have been 77 franchise relocations among Minor League Baseball teams. Exact information has not been released regarding what the Minor League landscape would look like in 2021 if the plan is adopted, but the best roadmap might be to follow the money. In the past when a franchise was moved it resulted in better facilities and a much greener money stream. This is not yet a done deal and off the field baseball issues including anti-trust laws and minimum wage standards will surely become a part of the equation. By the way, did you know that players in the NYPenn League (exempting those with bonus contracts) are paid $1,100 a month? Think about that, professional baseball players playing a 76-game season receive less than $3,300 for their efforts. Yet MLB is crying about losing money. Gerrit Cole’s recently signed $324-million deal will be paying him more than $1-million each time he starts a game for the New York Yankees. “Say it ain’t so, Joe” was the famous quote involving Shoeless Joe Jackson’s participation in fixing the 1919 World Series a century ago as a member of the Chicago White Sox. Now, 100 years later the games very own Commissioner has hatched a plan to ‘fix’ Minor League Baseball. I can only ask – Rob, don’t rob baseball fans in 42 American communities of their love of the game. Make your own resolution not to do so!

some leagues is excessive. Arguments can be made in support of all of the above. HOWEVER such attrition would fly in the face of MLB’s stated goal to grow interest in the game, especially with younger people across the land. Local fans should be more well-aware of same than most. The popular MLB/Little League Classic played at Bowman Field for the past three years is a direct result of trying to heighten baseball interest among our nation’s youth. It is even more ironic that our very own Williamsport Crosscutters that play in the host stadium for the MLB Classic are one of the 42 teams proposed to be eliminated. Speaking of fuzzy math, how does MLB generate growing interest in baseball among our youth by eliminating 42 baseball hosting communities? My own life-long interest in baseball was first nurtured at a very young age when my Dad first took me to see a Williamsport Grays game at Bowman Field. For the record, in 2019 41-million fans paid their way thru the turnstiles at Minor League Baseball parks. That attendance is more than the National Football League (33.8 million), the National Hockey League (22 million) or the NBA (21.9 million) drew for the same period. The NY-Penn League’s season attendance was 1,316,800 including 64,148 fans at Crosscutters games. Commissioner Manfred’s reduction plan would be a death sentence for the NY-Penn League as 9 of the league’s 14 teams are on the chopping block. Only Brooklyn (NY Mets), Hudson Valley (Tampa Bay), Tri City (Houston Astros), Aberdeen (Baltimore Orioles) and West Virginia (Pittsburgh Pirates) are the favored few. The first three

Grouse Priority Area Siting Tool Launches
Destined to be a game-changer in grouse restoration
P
ennsylvania’s state bird, the ruffed grouse, has suffered dramatic population losses due to the statewide scarcity of young forests and large-scale West Nile virus die-offs. To offset those losses, the Pennsylvania Game Commission has created a tool to identify prime grouse recovery areas. “The Game Commission recognizes that all conservation partners must work smarter, not just harder, to restore the King of Thunder,” said Lisa Williams, the agency grouse biologist who identified West Nile’s role in Pennsylvania’s grouse-population collapse. “It’s not enough to simply create grouse habitat. For best success, habitat must be created in areas buffered from disease-carrying mosquitoes and close to existing grouse populations so birds can quickly colonize new sites.” The Grouse Priority Area Siting Tool (G-PAST) identifies areas with landscape features that stave off mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus. When combined with information on local grouse populations, G-PAST identifies priority sites where disease risk is low and probability of grouse benefit is high. G-PAST has the potential to be a
game-changer in grouse restoration, because it focuses the attention of all conservation partners on areas where grouse can best recover. “We know high-quality grouse habitat is the best way to offset losses from West Nile virus,” said Matthew Schnupp, Game Commission Bureau of Wildlife Management director. “But if we create better grouse habitat in places with high disease risk, we may be setting grouse up to fail. “This tool combines cutting-edge geographic-information-system (GIS) analysis with our wildlife research and habitat-management information to identify where we can best help grouse. It’s an approach that puts us in the best position possible to help our state bird.” G-PAST can be used by habitat partners to focus habitat restoration, develop grant proposals, initiate collaborations at priority sites, enlist high-priority private landowners, and guide their own local clubs and chapters on where to undertake habitat projects. “G-PAST is a great example of how leveraging geospatial technology in decision-making can advance objectives and goals throughout the agency and among our partners,” said Bob Blystone, the GIS technician who created the tool.

“Agency foresters and land managers have been rapidly increasing efforts to restore the whole community of species that rely on young forests,” explained Pete Sussenbach, Game Commission Bureau of Wildlife Habitat Management director. “Creating healthy forests through management provides unique opportunities to meet many different wildlife-management objectives. The agency strives to improve forest health and resilience, and wildlife health and abundance, all at once. G-PAST is the key. It provides a level of guidance unknown in grouse conservation before now.” Williams said she’s now more optimistic about the potential for meaningful grouse management than she’s been in years. “Our research on West Nile virus since 2015 has always had one focused goal: Find a way to mitigate West Nile virus impacts so we can recover populations,” Williams explained. “There are many issues facing grouse, but G-PAST is making solid progress on mitigating the two primary drivers of decline: habitat loss and disease exposure.” Now, anyone in Pennsylvania can look at the G-PAST map and identify the best areas to invest in grouse habitat work, Williams noted. “Whether you’re a landowner with 20 acres or a land manager with 20,000 acres, G-PAST shows where you can best benefit grouse,” Williams said. “Although the tool was developed with grouse in mind, we’re excited to incorpo-
rate G-PAST in our management efforts for other declining species, such as the Canada Warbler,” said Dan Brauning, Game Commission Wildlife Diversity Division chief. G-PAST provides important siting information for species that occur in high elevations, species that rely on young forests, and the many other wild birds that are susceptible to West Nile virus, Brauning said. G-PAST supports at least a half-dozen habitat objectives in the agency’s Pennsylvania Ruffed Grouse Plan. The Game Commission has several large-scale habitat restoration projects planned or already being implemented in high-priority landscapes identified by G-PAST. The identification of landscape-scale restoration priorities can serve as a model for other Eastern states to proactively restore grouse where it makes the most sense. To check out G-PAST, go to http://bit.ly/ PGCG-Past. Once there, zoom into your area of interest. G-PAST uses a color-coded format of Good (orange), Better (blue) and Best (purple), so it’s easy to find important restoration sites in an area. There also are links to view a quick how-to tutorial, to contact the Game Commission grouse biologist and to view agency webinars on grouse management. More-advanced users can upload their own GIS data layers to see if their projects fall into grouse priority areas. All users can contact the agency grouse biologist to find out if local grouse populations occur in an area where they plan to create habitat.
