want to be outside, take in a local high school sporting event. Have a hot dog, shake some hands, and have a conversation — this is so much better than just sitting at home in front of the TV or computer. For those of you that winter just isn’t your cup of tea, I’ve got good news. Pitchers and catchers report for Spring Training in 20 days. Local high school and college Spring sports teams have already started getting ready for the season. And most importantly, we now have 47 more minutes of daylight than we did the 1st day of 2020. Before you know it, it will be St. Patrick’s Day. Please make the most of every day here on God’s Green Earth, even when the cold winds blow. Without the change of the seasons, just think how boring things would be. God Bless America.

’all know how much I love to write about fun things going on in the area. I loathe when people try to tell me there is nothing to do in this town. And you know that my response to that is, “if you can’t find something to do in the area, you aren’t looking very hard.” I know, this time of year can be downright depressing. It gets dark early. It’s cold outside. If it has snowed recently, it’s probably dirty and gross and piled up in inconvenient places. If you ask me, that’s even more of a reason to get out of the house and find something to do. So, what’s happening in the area in the next few days? Well, I’m glad you asked. Here are just a few of the fun things to do, and events going on the area. There’s an 80s dance party at the Crippled Bear on Saturday night! Pull out your legwarmers and neon and go have some fun! he mission of the Community Arts Center is to contribute to our communities through Artistic experiences and creative Collaborations. One of our primary principals is to assure that “Our programming will be appropriate to the diverse interests and educational needs of our regional audience and positioned to assure accessibility to all”. Our Educational Series is an integral part of the Community Arts Center’s programming, and we are deeply committed to supporting performance opportunities that enrich the educational experience for local students. The Community Arts Center has been providing arts education programs to students since the 2007-2008 season. As our relationship with the area school districts developed, we formed the Educational Series program for coalition schools in nine different central Pennsylvania School districts (known as the Lycoming-Sullivan Standards Coalition) to increase interaction and communication. These relationships ensure that the CAC’s education programs are meaningful to students and support the curriculum. As a result of continued communication, four broad subjects have been identified for each grade level of the Educational Series, and we work hard to align our programming choices around them: – Grades K-3- we present a show based on Children’s Literature – Grades 4-6- we present a show based on American History for a segment taught called

“American Heroes.” – Grades 7-9- we present a show based on STEM education – Grades 10-12- we present a theater play that would appeal to Theater and English classes At the start of each new season, as we begin to develop specific opportunities for student engagement in our Educational Series, the Community Arts Center includes the superintendents and curriculum coordinators from each coalition school to participate as decision-makers. As true stakeholders, they are provided a comprehensive list of proposed touring arts performances and are asked to offer their input. We have greatly enhanced the relevance of our performance programming as a meaningful educational experience for their students. So far, for the 2019/2020 season, we have presented the wonderful children’s story, Pete the Cat, in live theater form in October. The overwhelming response required us to add another performance to accommodate and welcome thousands of students into our William J. Martin Theatre. The talented students of the Uptown Music Collective performed in November. Additional Educational Series performances will include Four Score and Seven Years Ago, a suspenseful musical which tells the story of Lemuel, an escaped slave in Georgia who unexpectedly befriends Jacob, a young Confederate soldier. The two men may be of different races and on different sides of the Civil War, but they have much to teach each other about bravery and loyalty. And in May,

In some cases, this is the first and possibly the only exposure for many of these students to professionally produced performance arts on a live professional concert stage. lans for a 4 million dollar nursing home center and multi-building apartment complex to be constructed on the north side of Four Mile Drive in the 1300 block in Loyalsock Township were revealed last week by former Governor George M. Leader during a visit to the city. The former governor made the announcement in his capacity as President of Commonwealth Industries Inc., a corporation that has four nursing homes in operation in Pennsylvania and three others in the planning stages. The land purchase and preliminary plans for the 150-bed facility, which will consist of 52,000 square feet of floor space, were consummated in the early fall, Mr. Leader said. Present plans call for Leader Nursing Home, an adjunct two-story office building of 11,000 square feet and

the surrounding apartments to be constructed of brick and masonry if details can be worked out, the project will be subcontracted to local firms, he said. The extended care facility was authorized by the start after need was justified, is being built in Williamsport as the result of a market analysis which revealed that there was a definite need for such services in the area. The local home will handle both Pennsycare and Medicare patients. An added impetus was given to the Williamsport area because the former governor said, there is an awareness on the part of local people of the importance of rehabilitative medicine, an area that is greatly emphasized in the Leader nursing homes. Judging from past experience, Mr. Leader predicted the nursing home would require 75 to 80 full-time employees, including 8 or 10 registered nurses in supervisory positions and 15 to 20 licensed practical nurses.

This Week’s LION: Uncle Sam Wants You! By Larry Stout

I

n the “Year of the Volunteer,” it is worth honoring those who choose to serve their country in the Armed Forces of the United States of America. Though these are not generally thought of as “volunteers” in the usual sense of the term, it is a choice that entails more than an occupation. This is a choice where a person cannot walk away from it if they do not like it.

This is a choice where a person is putting their life on the line for the sake of their country. The tradition of a volunteer militia goes back to the Minute Men of Bunker Hill fame. It was not until the Civil War that manpower needs outnumbered supply, and a military conscription, or as it is more commonly known as, the draft was inaugurated. However, it was quite unpopular and even resulted into deadly riots in New York City. After the Civil

War ended, so did the draft, but was brought back during World War II. This time the draft endured because of the rapid succession of US involvement in conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. But the anti-war movement that grew out of the Vietnam War eventually resulted in the United States moving to an all-volunteer military in 1973. I served as an Air Force recruiter from 1980-1984, and I can attest that it was a challenge. There was still a hangover from the Vietnam War and military service was seen for many young people as their last option. Sadly, among the hundreds of young people that entered my office over

MURRAY

those years, I only remember one (!) that said that his primary reason for wanting to enlist was to serve his country. (And sadly, he did not pass the physical and thus had to be rejected). But with Desert Storm in 1991 and especially after the 9/11 attacks in 2001, patriotism was back on the menu. In a survey of area recruiters (who preferred not to be quoted), it appears that the desire to serve for patriotism sake is very high for a number of recruits. Yes, many look forward to the experience and education that will be acquired, but the uniform and what it stands for is a high

priority. For those young men and women interested in serving their country, there are a number of steps that need to be followed. It begins with visiting a local recruiter, which in the Williamsport area is the TJ Maxx Plaza on the Golden Strip, 1774 E. 3rd Street, Williamsport. It is quite acceptable to bring a parent or close friend along. It is a good idea also for the applicant to bring along their social security card, driver’s license, and birth certificate. The recruiter will ask

questions about education, health, and any law violations. It is also standard practice to weigh the applicant, as there are minimum and maximum weight requirements. The recruiter will schedule an Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), which is the same enlistment test used for every branch of service. There are minimum test scores for each branch, but the scores also determine the particular fields the applicant would be eligible for. At the recruiting office, the

recruiter may conduct a short physical training (PT) test for potential recruits, but everyone will eventually go to a MEPS (Military Enlistment Processing Station) for a physical examination. Like the ASVAB, the MEPS physical is the same for all the branches of service. It will include height and weight measurements, urine and blood tests, drug and alcohol tests, etc. Once all these eligibility requirements are satisfied, the applicant meets with a service enlistment counselor to select a career field in their particular branch of service. Once this is determined and a contract is signed, the last step is the

Oath of Enlistment. “I, (name), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the president of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God.” And for all those who voluntarily take this path, a grateful nation thanks you! Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. He can be reached by email: lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

f you love baseball, the ballroom of the Genetti Hotel in downtown Williamsport was the place to be on Wednesday, January 15. Attendees were regaled with baseball talk from such luminaries as legendary Phillies slugger Greg ‘the Bull’ Luzinski, Phillies Assistant General Manager, Bryan Minniti, ESPN commentator, Tim Kurkjian and Cutters’ manager, Pat Borders, as well as remarks from the Crosscutters’ principal owner, Peter Freund. Speaking of Borders, the biggest news of the night was about him. It was learned that the Phils announced last week that he would not be returning to the Cutters for a sixth season, instead he was named skipper of the Phils’ Clearwater Threshers club. According to Crosscutters’ Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations, Gabe Sinicropi, the news was “bittersweet.” While it is good to see Borders continue to advance in the Phillies organization, it is sad for the Cutters’ staff and fans to see him go. In his five seasons here he became the winningest manager in Cutters’ history and leaves behind a legacy of goodwill

and excellent baseball. As a nod to Borders’ achievements here, it was announced that Borders’ uniform number 10 would be permanently retired and placed on what has become the “Wall of Fame” on Bowman Field’s outfield fence, joining, Geremi Gonzales’ “41”, Dave Williams’ “36,” Dave Bresnahan’s “59” and Jackie Robinson’s “42.” Before the banquet, at a gathering for the media, I was able to speak to ESPN reporter and commentator, Tim Kurkjian, and I asked him about the chances of the former Williamsport Gray, Dick Allen’s chances of being chosen for the Baseball Hall of Fame when the Veterans Committee meets this coming December to consider candidates from the Golden and Early Baseball Era. “I think Dick is a borderline candidate, but I would vote for him and believe he warrants induction into the Hall of Fame,” Kurkjian told me. “I think he was once the most feared sluggers of his time and I never saw anyone hit the ball as hard as he did.” He continued, “Dick excelled during a time when pitching was at a level in which it was some of the best that there ever was. Averages and production by hitters was greatly decreased and as

Tim Kurkjian was asked about the proposed reduction of minor league teams that could potentially eliminate the Crosscutters. “I think it is a bad idea,” Kurkjian said. “The minor leagues are one of the most important components to baseball. It is how to develop the talent to play in the major leagues. The commissioner said he wants baseball to grow and to encourage young people to embrace the sport, well something like this I think undermines this. Minor league baseball is very important to the life of the cities that have teams. It is part of the fabric of those places. Here in Williamsport is a good example of that. I hope that cooler heads will prevail. The idea for this came from Jeff Luhnow, the disgraced and fired former general manager of the Astros, maybe that will also help to kill the idea as well.” Additional highlights included the induction of Rob Thomas into the Bowman Field Hall of Fame and Navy quarterback Hal Spooner’s induction to the Williamsport Sports Walk. Thomas has been the public address announcer at Cutters home games for the past 20 seasons. Spooner, a Williamsport native helped lead the 1960 Navy Midshipmen to a 9-1 regular season record and a trip to the Orange Bowl. More than $6,700 was raised for the Hot Stove League Banquet’s designated charity, the West Christian Community Center.

result they even had to change the height of the mound following the 1968 season. I think with today’s sabermetrics and analytics it makes Allen have an even more compelling case for his induction.” Slugger, Greg Lewinski, who was Allen’s teammate with the Phillies in 1975 and 1976, echoes these sentiments. “I think Dick most certainly should be in the Baseball Hall of Fame. I think he has the numbers and the career that qualifies him,” Luzinski said. “Dick was a good teammate, but he was also a very awesome hitter that was a very dominant player, including being Rookie of the Year, Most Valuable Player and several All-Star appearances. Dick was a very intimidating hitter that scared many a pitcher.” Kurkjian and Luzinski were asked the same question during the banquet’s question and answer period and said basically the same thing about Allen. Turning to other matters, Luzinski was asked about former Williamsport Grays skipper and his manager for a short period of time with the Phillies, Frank Lucchesi. “Frank was a great guy. He was a player’s manager,” Luzinski said. “He would always go to the wall for you. Larry Bowa really liked him. Unfortunately, I did not get to play for him that long at Philadelphia. He was almost my manager at Eugene, Oregon, but we had just gotten Willie Montanez and I was then redirected to Reading, where I had a great season.”

warm in oven. Add the bacon chunks to the pan and fry until crispy. Drain off some excess fat, keeping about 1 teaspoon worth in the pan. You want to keep all that flavor in the pan! Add the onion and garlic and fry until onion is golden brown. (about 2 minutes). Reduce heat to low heat and add the heavy cream; slowly. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer; season with a little salt and pepper to your taste. Add in the parmesan cheese and allow the sauce to simmer until it has melted slightly. (If the sauce isn’t thick enough, make the roux and add to the cream sauce, it will thicken it up in no time!) Add the chicken back into the pan to serve. Serve with your favorite pasta, rice, or egg noodles.

he American Cancer Society has kicked-off our annual Daffodil Days. This colorful first flower of spring represents a campaign to bring hope to cancer patients and those affected by the disease. Funds raised through the sales help support groundbreaking research, patient services, and other cancer society programs. E FRE tes tima

Daffodils can be purchased by the bunch for $10 or potted for $15. Tulips are a new addition this year and can be purchased by the bunch for $15. For $25, people can purchase Gifts of Hope – bunches of daffodils that the American Cancer Society will deliver to patients in hospitals, treatment centers, and other local facilities. “We are so very grateful to the individuals and companies who

support the American Cancer Society through their Daffodil Days donations each year,” commented Katie Ronald, American Cancer Society Senior Community Development Manager. “While some choose to give these beautiful flowers to their loved ones, other use them as a way to thank employees, friends, and colleagues.” Orders are being taken now through February 24. Flowers will arrive the week of March 23. For information on ordering flowers in your local community, please contact Katie Ronald at katie.ronald@cancer.org or

724-834-5116 ext 65287. The American Cancer Society is a global grassroots force of 1.5 million volunteers dedicated to saving lives, celebrating lives, and leading the fight for a world without cancer. From breakthrough research, to free lodging near treatment, a 24/7/365 live helpline, free rides to treatment, and convening powerful activists to create awareness and impact, the Society is the only organization attacking cancer from every angle. They are quite the leader of the quack in terms of fashionable yet functional footwear this winter with a waterproof rubber shell, Thermolite insulation, and a patterned shaft. These boots bring a bit of quirkiness to your standard sweater and jeans ensemble, as well as when you pair them with a shirtdress and fleece-lined leggings. Sales are going strong from all of these brands, so now is the time to invest in a quality, stylish boot to see you through the rest of winter.

Of course, not every stylish boot is rustic and clunky. Sam Edelman’s Jaclyn Chelsea Bootie tends more toward the chic end of the style spectrum in both black and dark taupe suede. This waterproof boot with exaggerated tread and easy to slip-on gore insets pairs perfectly with work-wear staples like blazers, cropped chinos, and wool culottes. And depending on the length of your pant hem, this cold-weather footwear can also work with formal business suits just as well as it does

in trading as a hobby has mushroomed in recent years, particularly here in Williamsport, the home of the Little League World Series, where the opportunity to obtain and trade pins of various types is greatly enhanced. A large event celebrating this hobby, called the “Williamsport Winter Classic” will take place January 24 to 26 at the Liberty Arena/KAOS Fun Zone in downtown Williamsport. The event is Friday, January 24 from 6 p.m. to Midnight, Saturday, January 25, noon to Midnight and Sunday, January 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. One of the notable aspects of this will be the Pin Trading 101 sessions that will be conducted by a panel of pin aspects. The event will also feature various pin vendors such as: Wilson Trophy, DPH Custom Pins, Infiniti Pins, GS-JJ Pins, and Keystone Advertising Specialties. “Infiniti Pins has hosted a winter pin trading event in Williamsport for several years and we are happy that they have allowed us the opportunity to grow their event into a full weekend of pin trading. The Lycoming County Visitors Bureau is very excited about the Williamsport Winter Classic,” Gina Edwards, Tourism Coordinator for the Lycoming County Visitors, told Webb Weekly. “Pin Trading is a very popular activity and we hope that people come to Williamsport for the weekend and take advantage of

the may pin trading opportunities. We are happy to have several great pin companies participating in the event to not only share their expertise, but also trade and sell all sorts of pins.” She continued, “The Liberty Arena is the perfect location for the Williamsport Winter Classic with plenty of room for trading and numerous activities at Kaos Fun Zone for opportunities to take a break from trading and try some different activities, like bowling or laser tag. Our hope is that many local businesses that have pins for sale will get them out for the weekend to sell. We are encouraging all Williamsport Winter Classic visitors to go out in the community and find some new pins for sale.” Shannon Cotter who hosts a large pin group on Facebook, is very excited about the “Williamsport Winter Classic.” “It’s so wonderful to see our local community wanting to embrace and help grow this fantastic hobby!,” Cotter said. “As an active member of the pin trading community this event is a perfect time to get together after the LLWS.The hustle and bustle of the series can limit the amount of time we get to spend talking and catching up. What makes this event so great is it allows us to slow down and really connect with one another while also having the opportunity to trade some great pins!!! On behalf of myself and all the Pin Fam members, thank you so very much to EVERYONE involved in helping to make this happen!!! You all ROCK!!! #PinFam #WC2020.”

County Hall Corner: Something New is a Happenin’ Here By Larry Stout

T

here is a theory in psychology about first impressions that has been popularized by Malcolm Gladwell in his book, Blink: the Power of Thinking Without Thinking. It is a little bit misleading because this process does involve thinking, just not the way we generally think about thinking. This theory postulates that our initial impressions are often very good indicators of reality. So, for example, if I initially meet someone and have a ‘gut feeling’ that I should not trust them, there is a very good chance that this person is fundamentally untrustworthy. In general, men do not trust these impressions, given that they do not rest on logic, which is why the phenomenon has traditionally been called “women’s intuition.” All of this flashed across my brain as I attended the first regular public session of the new County Commissioners board on Thursday, January 9th. Two of the members were familiar; the incumbent commissioners Tony Mussare and Rick Mirabito. The chairman was the newly elected county commissioner, Scott Metzger. The men arrived at the front of the room and Commissioner Metzger immediately asked all to stand for the opening prayer. It was then and there that my intuition kicked in. This was not a formality that tradition had been forced upon these elected officials. Scott Metzger prayed a prayer that was directed at God and not the audience. His prayer had specific requests and took much longer than

the few moments that had previously been the norm. When he finished, Scott turned and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. There was something about these moments that seemed to set a tone. The room was the same, the format and agenda followed the same pattern of the past four years, but there was definitely ‘something’ different that I could not put my finger on. The meeting started at 10:00 and I looked with great apprehension at the six-page agenda. Given that a normal 2-3page agenda generally took an hour or more to get through in the past, I was already thinking about cancelling my noon appointment. But, with amazing efficiency, the agenda was addressed and covered in record time. They were not skipping over items, but rather referring to work that had already been conducted and was now being presented for approval. In little more than a half an hour, the agenda was completed, and Chairman Metzger announced it was time for “Commissioner Comments.”

notation that some had not been reviewed for two decades), working with the Chamber of Commerce, small businesses, developers, entrepreneurs and the County Planning Department to promote economic growth, and improving communication with the commissioners, the public, the courts, county employees, and all stakeholders. These items represented more than just a needs list, but a new agenda for the future. Whatever represented “business as usual” in the past was not to be the pattern for the Lycoming County Commissioners for the upcoming year. When I shared these impressions to one of the observers at the meeting, he looked at me skeptically with a “we’ll see” look. My instincts tell me that this board is going to be very, very different than the one that preceded it. I might be wrong, but something is telling me I am not.

He then pulled out a sheet of paper and announced that the commissioners had already been working hard and had hammered out some objectives to meet the challenges of the coming year. It was not clear if the eleven items Commissioner Metzger listed were in any particular order but beginning the list with the need to find a new Director of Public Safety to replace director John Yingling certainly seemed significant. Other items included the often-discussed golf course and sale of land surrounding the course, the need to expand broadband in the county, as well as the sale of Executive Plaza. But what was most intriguing was the number of items that represented new projects that the commissioners intended to tackle. These included reviewing all county leases, updating county policies and procedures (with the

ith increasing regularity over the past decade or more, landowners are rolling up their sleeves, digging out their wallets and putting sweat equity into their properties by performing habitat improvement that benefits all forms of game and nongame animals and birds that live there. Very quickly you can amass a rather large amount of dollars spent in these efforts, but there are also some things that don’t require a great outlay of cash and, with some physical labor on your part will go a long way toward attracting and holding wildlife. For the moment, let’s look at any old fruit and nut shrubs or trees that may already be on you land. While there may be a few old abandoned shrubs or nut trees, most likely what you will find as you survey the property are old, unkempt apple trees that have been there for years and are now getting crowded out by other vegetation and in desperate need of a good pruning. It was in the mid to late 1800s, that

the lumber industry in Lycoming County and surrounding areas had grown so much that Williamsport was known as the “Lumber Capital of the World!” Throughout the hills and valleys, lumber camps would spring up and would be occupied for months as the lumbermen harvested the timber. These hearty men probably never ate an avocado, but they certainly did consume a lot of apples, which resulted in apple cores being thrown everywhere - particularly around these campsites. Today, you will come across these old trees, sometimes singularly and sometimes in groups of a dozen or more. If you have any of these old gems on your property, you are in luck. When you locate one of these old trees, there are three things you can do to improve its health and productivity. First – daylight the area around the tree. This requires cutting any other species of trees that are growing close enough to the apple tree to block needed sunlight for maximum viability of the tree. Secondly, while you have a sharp chainsaw and pruning tools available, prune the targeted apple

to properly determine the lime and fertilizer requirements for the clovers, grasses and seed mixes you want to use. The soil preparation, liming, fertilizing and seeding of the plot should easily be accomplished by using a small tractor or an ATV and a small drag harrow. The creation of a foodplot that has the extra draw of these old apple trees will go a long way toward drawing and holding turkeys, deer, grouse and even cottontails. It will be used by songbirds and nongame species of all kinds and will be the source of a real feeling of accomplishment in your efforts to improve your habitat.

Finally, fertilize with a mixture of 1010-10 granular fertilizer underneath the outer reaches of the remaining branches (this is referred to as the “dripline”). Depending on the lay of the land and what other food sources are available nearby, you might consider making these apple trees the centerpiece of an expanded food plot, ranging in size from ¼ to ½ acre or more. Generally speaking, most ice fishermen are comfortable going out on a minimum of four inches of hard, clear ice; with sevenplus inches of ice, we are comfortable fishing close together in small groups. Be aware, however, that ice is not always uniform over its entire surface. Most lake surfaces freeze at different rates in different locations, and for a variety of reasons-wind, current, springs, and even wildlife like ducks swimming in an area can keep a spot from freezing as quickly as other parts of a lake. By the way, don’t assume that because there are fishermen on the other side of the lake, you can take any route to get to the same spot. There may be serious, unknown hazards on

your chosen route, so you may want to follow known travel routes. For added safety, most of my ice fishing buddies and I also wear suits made up of bib overalls and coats that are for winter’s cold temperatures, but more importantly, they are made to keep a person afloat if they go through the ice. You get wet and cold, but you stay afloat and can be pulled to safety. If you don’t have such a suit, you may want to wear a life vest of some type. It’s also recommended that each ice fisherman carry a pair of ice picks. The picks can be worn around the neck and, if needed, can be pulled apart, exposing a spike that can quickly be thrust into the ice should you go through, making it

possible to pull yourself out. Another item I highly recommend is a pair of ice cleats. Surely there are times that the cleats will not be needed as when heavy snow covers the ice, but on slick, hard, clear ice, you definitely want cleats. I once saw a friend slip on the way to check a tip-up, and he came down hard on the back of his head; he forgot to put his ice cleats on. Aside from these tips, it’s also important that you dress warmly, but that’s another whole article. In the meantime, if we get ice, you will see me and my buddies out on the lake-we’re the little black dots staring at a hole in the ice and having a great time.

fishing lake. So much for highway safety, but what about ice safety? First, if you are new to the activity, I would highly recommend that you go with someone who is experienced and exercises good judgment. Be especially aware of the “good judgment” part since not all veteran ice fishermen always exercise good judgment. As an avid ice fisherman, I like to pay close attention to weather patterns, and I try to “watch” the ice forming on lakes. In other words, I’m always watching and checking to see my favorite lakes in the freezing process. If I can’t see a lake for myself, I try to check with ice-fishing buddies who are keeping an eye on lakes nearby.

obvious observation regarding the nonpunishment of players who may have been involved. “I couldn’t imagine being involved in a scheme like this,” Rose responded. “What’s going to happen to Beltran? Can he manage the Mets now? He was a ringleader, right? The whole thing is getting technical. I just can’t imagine how many people are really involved. I can’t imagine doing something like that. “Most players don’t give a damn what happens to an organization, as long as it doesn’t happen to them. If I’m a player and every time I bat, I’m getting signs from the dugout; I’m just as guilty as the guy who is giving me the signs.” Since the announcement, I’ve heard sports commentators’ decree that baseball should ban all technology from the game. How’s that for a 21st-century proclamation? It was just six years ago that the game was heralded for introducing instant replay to the game. It was that action leading to TV monitors in the dugout and manager’s challenges that hold up the game while umpires huddle with some office in New York City before rendering a call. Now baseball is on the verge of using this same technology to introduce ‘robot umpires’ for ball and strike calls. Some have mocked baseball as a slowmoving game. But the fast pace of modern technology has now brought the game to its ‘integrity knees.’ Could it be that it is OK to ‘steal’ as long as you don’t use a weapon? Just asking.

The day after the Astros fired Luhnow and Hinch the Red Sox quickly followed suit and parted ways with their manager, Alex Cora, who had been linked to both team’s improprieties. Cora served at the Astros bench coach in 2017 and was described in Manfred’s report as the dugout leader in the team’s sign stealing procedures. He then joined the Red Sox in 2018, the current subject of MLB’s signstealing suspicions. While Manfred came down hard on Luhnow and Hinch, none of the Astros players were singled out for any punishment, although Carlos Beltran, a player with Houston in 2017 and now the manager of the New York Mets, was described as being an active participant in the dugout scheme. Manfred wrote the following in his report: “Assessing discipline of players for this type of conduct is both difficult and impractical. It is difficult because virtually all of the Astros’ players had some involvement or knowledge of the scheme, and I am not in a position based on the investigative record to determine with any degree of certainty every player who should be held accountable, or their relative degree of culpability. It is impractical given the large number of players involved and the fact that many of those players now play for other clubs.” The Commissioner’s words may ring true, and no doubt his integrity holds more creditability than that of the previously banned Rose. Still, the former hit-king made a self-serving but

Sporting Matters with Spence…

Rivalry Restored

I

t has been more than a week, and I am still buzzing. Actually, the entire hoops community is. What transpired in the Catholic Community Center last Sunday might never be duplicated. It was an amazing atmosphere, both teams played well, and I had the best seat to witness. The Loyalsock Lancers prevailed as they defeated the St. John Neumann Golden Knights, but it was a win for everyone involved. Both teams were incredible in this 102-86 local showcase. There was never a dull moment, and the great crowds were treated to an unbelievable display. The Lancers moved to 12-0 and gained mad respect. Neumann fell to 9-2. What an environment sports fans. The doors opened at 12:30. There was already a line of folks outside waiting. The gym was completely packed by 1:15. SJNRA officials closed the doors shortly after. It’s a great thing my friends Paul Bo, Darrick Rizzo, and Jim Webb live streamed. There were several who were turned away. It was standing room only prior to the JV start. It was amazing. The boys and I took the floor in front of a boisterous crowd. We normally play our games in front of a few fans and our parents. The crowd usually files in just a few minutes before the Varsity. Today it was different. People were everywhere. We were so nervous.

“It was exhilarating,” SJNRA freshman Kane Wright said. Great word, kid. I actually called his bluff but looked up the definition and spelling. “It was an amazing atmosphere. Awesome crowd, and it was so loud. Awesome experience. This game was so much fun to be a part of.” My young Knights held their own. We played a great first half, and I was proud of my boys. Loyalsock’s JV team is also loaded. They are very talented and are out of our league. Jeff Everitt is a good dude. He knows and can coach the game too. The Lancers turned up their intensity in the second half, and we never responded. OK. We got throttled, but seeing my youngsters run up and down the court in front of a capacity crowd was awesome. One of my players made a great play, and I called a time out with 20 seconds remaining. The game was out of hand, but I wanted my guys to relish in the moment. I told them not to worry about the score. I simply instructed them to look around. The gym was packed, and this was one of those opportunities that you will never forget. “It was unreal,” SJNRA freshman Angelo Rodriguez relived. “I’ve never played in front of so many people. The student sections and fans from both sides were outstanding. There was so much energy

in our gym Sunday. Great environment.” There was no need for a shot clock in this Sunday afternoon matinée. Both teams traded punches early, and Neumann lead 2718 after one. Loyalsock then rallied and went on Jamie an impressive run. They Spencer scored an astounding 36 points in the second quarter and took control. The pace was incredible, and neither squad got tired. The two teams combined for 188 points in 32 minutes. That is unheard of. Aiden Gair scored a career-high 44 points for Sock, including 23 in that second quarter. I knew Aiden had skills, but he was outstanding. Gair hit everything. Inside and out. Many of his shots were contested. It simply didn’t matter. He was sensational. Aiden drilled two deep threes right in front of the Neumann bench. I even tried to defend one. It was one of the best performances I have ever seen in person. I’ve seen a lot of basketball games too. Loyalsock was well balanced, and they were as good as advertised. Saraj Ali added 18 and grabbed several boards. Rees Watkins is an exceptional athlete, and he scored 16. Idris Ali was in control and tallied 14. Legendary Coach CI Ron Insinger was so hyped for this game that he tried to steal the ball on the very first

possession. True story — and it caught the entire gym by surprise. CI actually deflected one of SJNRA’s player’s dribble in the opening seconds. He was assessed a technical foul and had to sit for the rest of the game. Everyone was laughing, and the has to be a first for this Hall of Fame Coach who has won over 1,000 games. St. John Neumann Regional was led by the brothers Hill. Freshman Davion had 29, and Junior David scored 27 points. Keon Burkholder added 10, and Josiah Reid contributed 9. It was a great test for the Golden Knights, and this game will only help them moving forward. “This was a great atmosphere, and both teams were great,” Head Coach Joe Clark explained. “Credit to CI and his Lancers. It was an honor to go head to head with him. Gair was outstanding. That young man can certainly play. Our guys did well in front of the ultimate stage. Of course, we wanted to win, but I am proud of the way we competed tonight. The cream rises to the top in these big games.” This local showcase has been nonexistent of late. The last time these two teams played was back in 2014. Thanks to CI and Frank Luppachino for re-establishing the rivalry. Kudos to them as they have already agreed to play in 2021. Many of these players are good friends. Several of Neumann’s kids play on the Loyalsock football team via a co-op. It’s a beautiful thing. Well done. Cheers.

STOLTZFUS WOODCRAFT HANDMADE ITEMS

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT NEW INVENTORY ARRIVING DAILY

FORMERLY OF THE LYCOMING MALL ST

OPEN HOUSE FEBRUARY 1

Stoltzfus Woodcraft was established by John and Katie Stoltzfus of Millersburg, PA. They were an Amish family who got their start by selling crafts and handmade items at shows across PA. They later moved to the Lycoming Mall where they flourished for 27 years at the mall. They decided in 2018 to partner with Jamey and Tracy Meyers (Owners of Meyers Masonry in Montoursville, PA). Meyers was responsible along with Steve Kriner (Owner of the Plaza) for assisting in the new construction of the new store location. Meyers crew moved Stoltzfus from the mall to the new store. Today, Stoltzfus Woodcraft has been sold to Jamey and Tracy Meyers after the Stoltzfus’ decided to retire. The many friends and loyal customers that they formed are still calling Stoltzfus one of the nicest stores and shopping experiences in the area Stoltzfus will go on living out its roots as being the area’s largest supplier of handmade Amish furniture and country décor in the area. We will also be bringing in many new items and a lot more sales and events, new loyalty program, 10% senior citizen and veteran discounts, delivery options, all with fair prices for the one of a kind inventory that only Stoltzfus has. We may be changing ownership, but we will never change the way that John & Katie Stoltzfus ran their business. We invite you on Saturday, February 1st to come to our “Open House” where we will be hosting a warm welcome to our expansion in inventory along with fantastic sales that you will love. If you liked Stoltzfus Woodcraft in the past, you’ll love what we’ve done with the place.
