An Evening with Coach Kelly and the Lady Bison By Jim Webb Jr.

C

ongratulations to Summer McNulty on scoring her 1,000th point for the Loyalsock Lady Lancers. Summer’s brother Chase and my son Hunter are good friends and graduated in the same class. They played a lot of baseball together, both for the school and travel teams. Summer was the little sister that had to tag along to all the events, most of the time bored out of her mind. Summer would often go out with a group of us shopping at the nearest mall, to grab a bite to eat, or just find things to do to kill time. She even helped me with my fashion style. It has been my pleasure to watch this little girl — who was knee-high to a grasshopper — grow into this amazing young lady and athlete. Did I mention

Summer is only a junior? You go get ’em, Summer. Keep shooting and swinging for the stars. It is also my pleasure to sit to the right of play by play man Paul Bo and provide the color commentary for local high school hoop action. The games can be viewed live at webbweekly.com and on Facebook. They are then archived to be watched at the viewer’s convenience. During my travels, while doing games, I’m often asked the question, who’s the best basketball player to have ever laced them up in the West Branch Valley? I quickly respond like a good crossover dribble by Hall-of-Famer Allen Iverson and always catch people leaning the wrong way. See they’re waiting for me to answer Alize Johnson, Chevy Troutman, or one of the great names from our rich history of boys’ basketball past.

MEET COACH KELLY @ SOJKU PAVILLION HOLY CROSS VS. BUCKNELL

My answer to the question is Kelly Mazzante. This, like Iverson’s crossover, takes things in a different direction. After a split second of thought and surprise, the person I’m speaking with then smiles or nods in agreement. The conversation then switches to Kelly’s great accomplishments. Of course, it goes full circle back to the men’s side of the ball, but that’s a conversation for another day. Kelly is Montoursville’s all-time leading scorer with 3,219 points. She was a PA State Player of the Year and a was a three-time All-State selection. She then continued her academic and basketball careers at Penn State University, where she scored 2,919 points. This not only made her the alltime Nittany Lion leading scorer but also the Big Ten Conference all-time scoring champ. After finishing her days in Happy Valley, Kelly was drafted by Charlotte in the WNBA. She played seven years in the WNBA and won two championships while playing for the Phoenix Mercury. Kelly has now moved her love of the game from player to coach, which is a perfect fit for the young lady who is even a better person and teacher than she is a basketball player. And that’s saying something! After a five-year stint at IUP as an assistant coach, during which the team reached two Division II Final Fours. Kelly is now on the sideline as an assistant for Bucknell. And this is where my article crosses over and really becomes a lot of fun. With an assist from Kelly and her family, Webb Weekly would love to take six middle school-aged young ladies to the February

19th Holy Cross at Bucknell woman’s basketball game. The game tips off at 6:00 p.m. Transportation, dinner, and some time with Coach Kelly will be provided. Of course, along with some great Division I basketball action. They will be leaving my office parking lot at 3:30. Long-time Williamsport educator, coach, and trainer of local athletes Marilouise Mazzante (FastMaz), will be chaperoning. She also just happens to be Kelly’s aunt. She is an amazing person that I have trusted with my sons over the years. She is the perfect person for the job. So, just how do you get to become one of the special young ladies selected to watch a ball game and spend some time with Coach Kelly and the Lady Bison? Simple, just fill out the entry form below and mail it in or drop it off at the Webb Weekly office. You can also go online at and register at webbweekly.com. If selected through a random drawing, there will be a consent form that needs signed off on by a parent or guardian. Webb Weekly will purchase the tickets, provide the trip and meal, and follow all NCAA rules and requirements. So, if you know a young lady that loves basketball, please share this opportunity with her. Tip of my Webb Weekly cap to Kelly for being the wonderful young person she is and always giving back to the community. For more information, you can go to Webbweekly.com or give me a call at 570337-0755. God Bless America.

he first Super Bowl I remember watching was Super Bowl XXIV in 1990. It was the 49ers versus the Denver Broncos at the Superdome in New Orleans. Admittedly, I’ve never been a huge football fan, but I remember watching this game because, for whatever reason, my mom has always been a Broncos’ fan and was looking forward to seeing her crush John Elway play in the Super Bowl. I’ve never seen the attraction. Personally, I think John Elway looks like a horse, so his playing for the Broncos only made sense. Being the contrary nine-year-old I could be, I decided to root for the 49ers. Joe Montana was way cuter than John Elway anyway. The 49ers ran all over the Broncos that night, picking up a 55-10 win over Denver. Joe Montana connected with Jerry Rice three times that night to solidify one of the most well-known QB/WR pairs in the NFL. Thirty years later, and if I have to pick an NFL team to stand behind, it’s still the San Francisco 49ers. As is Webb Weekly tradition, it’s time for the yearly Super Bowl Predictions from around the Valley. Obviously, I am taking the 49ers. I don’t think it’s going to

be the blow-out that it was 30 years ago, but I think the Niners are going to have a respectable lead and take it 34-21. BF Steve kicks this Steph off the only correct Nordstrom way. He thinks the Niners are going lock up a win, 21-14. This is why I keep him around Polling my writing staff had some interesting results. Bernadette thinks the Chiefs are due for a win but didn’t have anything else to add. Scott Lowery didn’t think his opinion was worth much (I disagree, but…), but he said, “It’s been said, ‘offense sells tickets, but defense wins championships.’ If that’s the case, I’m buying a ticket. Chiefs play offense like it is a video game. Their run defense also played solid in stopping ‘King’ Henry, the NFL’s leading rusher, in their win over the Titans. It’s been 50 years since the Chiefs last visited the Super Bowl. Party time in KC. Chiefs 3824.” Pastor Tim is praying for an overdue Chiefs win too. “The Steelers had a rough year, so I’m only mildly interested in this year’s big game. I’m going with

the Chiefs. It’s been 50 years since they defeated the Vikings in their last Super Bowl in 1969 — the same year my ‘Miracle Mets’ won the World Series. Maybe the Chiefs will enjoy their own miracle moment. Chiefs - 26, 49ers - 21.” Larry Stout is taking the Chiefs too. “There were no Cinderellas invited to this Super Bowl LIV (54) given that the two teams have a combined 25-7 record. Both teams have high-powered offenses and solid defenses. It promises to be an exciting game that very well might be decided by which team has the ball last. In games like this, it often comes down to the quarterback, and I like the Chief ’s Pat Mahomes over the 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo. I call it for KC, 28-27. New Webb Weekly writer Dave Bellomo added, “San Francisco has a very highly rated defense, while Kansas City has a potent offense. The 49ers defense will give pressure with just their front 4, leaving 7 for coverage, which provides a big advantage. This is not to discount Kansas City’s defense against the run, which is also respectable. The game will come down to which team offers the greatest “X factor”. The Chief ’s, Patrick Mahomes, is very talented, can scramble, avoids pressure, and is a big-play maker. The score will be close, KC 27, SF 24.” None of them are getting paid this month. Lou, as always, has my back. He says, “I

SUPER BOWL think San Francisco will win 27-10, even though I believe Kansas City has the better quarterback in Mahomes. Both teams have rugged defenses, but 49ers running game provides them balance, which in the end will tell.” He can get paid this month. My in-office co-workers have some thoughts on the game also. Curt seems to think that the KC is going to come out on top 31-17. Wes says, “Everyone loves an underdog. Toto will lead Kansas City to an upset, 23-20 — but what do I know about football?” Jaimie says the Chiefs are going to beat the Niners by at least 10 points. Alys is hoping for a Chief ’s win. She says it’s going to come down to the last few minutes, but that this is Andy Reid’s year. All four of them are fired. I really thought Jimmy would come through for me, but he seems to think we are going to see the highest-scoring Super Bowl ever, with the Chiefs coming out ahead. “Kansas City – 45, San Fran – 42. The Chiefs haven’t been to a Super Bowl in 50 years. Longtime head coach Andy Reid has never won a Super Bowl — the time is now!” Am I allowed to fire him? Kristy checked in with her son, who

THE

is calling the Niners win, 24-14. Charlie has my back, calling a 49’ers win, 21-10. I think they both need a raise! Ken DiRocco from Impact Advertising has a prediction that I can appreciate. “49ers look to be the better team, with an incredible running game that is setting playoff records. They also have a very dominating defense that stifled both Aaron Rodgers and Minnesota. In fact, they didn’t give up a point in four quarters from the second half of the Minnesota game until the second half of the Green Bay game. But by the end of the second half, the game was over 27-0! “The Chiefs defense has been their weakness all year. Some people feel that they have been playing better for the last few games, but giving up 31 and then 24 points in consecutive playoff games is not that great. It’s KC’s offense that has won these games. And they look unstoppable right now. “Last year the Rams were like the 49ers, they were overwhelmed in the Super Bowl as a first-time entry. Of course, that was against a veteran Patriots team who knew how to deal with the pressure of a Super Bowl. “Andy Reid has choked in every major game he’s ever coached. So, I have

Loyalsock coach Justin VanFleet is taking the Chiefs 42-28. His student-teacher and former Lyco lineman Cody Botts is also taking the Chiefs — same margin, different score — 31-17. On the other side of the bridge Montoursville head coach, JC Keefer is calling a close one but has the Chiefs squeaking it out 24-23. I hope they all fall into the creek… Williamsport football head coach Chuck Crews says that he’s gotta take the Chiefs on the strength of Andy Reid. “However, if the Niners can pressure/contain Mahomes with their front four, they could be in trouble.” He’s got KC 34-17. Speaking of Williamsport, new Mayor Derek Slaughter’s inaugural prediction is, “31-28 Chiefs. I’m not an analyst by any stretch of the imagination, but I know the 49ers have the D, and the Chiefs have the offensive power. I think it’ll be a fun, exciting game with the Chiefs ultimately being crowned the Super Bowl Champs.” I had such hope for some Port Support. Christian Diggs at Ciocca Hyundai is taking the Chiefs, 31-41. That digs at me. So, it looks like a good chunk of my poll is leaning very heavily to Kansas City. All I can say to that is that it’s OK to be wrong, and #GONINERS!

7 • Webb Weekly January 29, 2020

no faith in him. “If the 49ers can run the ball consistently and keep it out of Mohomes’s hands enough, they could win. But they have to stop a few KC drives and score whenever they get the ball. “Solid run game — great defense, says 49ers 35-31!” Finally, some sense! Murray Motors Owner, Brian, is calling a 38-35 San Fran win. He thinks Central Mountain and Penn State grad, Robbie Gould, will kick the winning field goal. That brings me peace. Have I mentioned recently how much I adore Crosscutters’ VP Gabe Sinicropi? He says, “I’ll actually be watching the “Big Game” (can we even SAY/ TYPE Super Bowl without paying the NFL?) in Las Vegas where I see the over/under for number of commercials with dogs in them is 3 1/2 and over/under for time of the anthem is 1 minute 59 seconds. I’m taking OVER on both. Oh, the game itself? 49ers prevail 34- 24.” Enjoy your trip, Gabe! The always fair Rick Quigley has the 49ers topping the Chiefs 36-31. You should go buy a car from him! Mike Rupert, from Rupert’s Meats, is predicting a 27-24 Chiefs win. The steaks are too high for a canner choice like that.

.S. Kresge Company is undertaking a vast modernization at its 5 and 10 cent store at 431 Pine Street. Workmen from the Jacob Gehron Company Inc. are removing counters, repairing floors and laying asbestos tile in the renovations that will include new display counters and fixtures and seven check-out counters similar to those at super markets. “The work is part of the company’s trend to modernize its downtown stores everywhere in order that they compare with newer stores at shopping center locations,” said Donald L. Dresibach, store manager. The nearest Kresge store with a similar operation is located in Camp Hill.

Some employees will be eliminated in the process, according to Mr. Dreisbach. “Some of our part-time help will no longer be needed and we should need less help during Easter and Christmas time,” he said. Six check-out counters will be set up in the front of the store, and one in the rear. Fourteen feet and 12 stools from the store’s lunch counter have been discarded to provide room for the changes, The soda fountain will be one of the few fixtures which will remain in the store and one of the few areas that will keep a cash register in operation. The renovations which began last week are expected to take six weeks to complete. The store will continue to do business during the repairs. Portable check out units are expected to be installed next week.

ou may associate the cold weather with being sick or catching a cold. The truth is, the weather is not directly responsible for making you sick, but it can affect your body. The Common Cold According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), millions of people in the U.S. develop the common cold each year. On average, most adults get two or three colds a year. Colds are typically caused by rhinovirus or one of 200 other viruses and strains of influenza. You are exposed to these viruses your whole life and year-round, but your body may respond in different ways during different times of the year. During the winter months, outdoor temperatures drop, and humidity is low making the air

dry. Add to this the increased time spent inside your heated house, exposing you to more dry air as well as environmental allergens, and you increase the chances of experiencing cold-like symptoms, allergies, or other respiratory issues. Additionally, the dry air, allergens, and cold temperatures can decrease blood flow to the nose and ears and may aggravate the symptoms of a cold. Symptoms of a cold vary, but may include: – Runny or stuffy nose – Sore throat – Cough – Congestion – Slight body aches or a mild headache – Sneezing – Low-grade fever If you do get a cold, the best treatment is to rest and drink plenty of fluids, especially water. Most colds go away on their own. Viral infections will typically clear

up within seven to 14 days. If your symptoms get worse or do not go away in 14 days, you should call your doctor. You should also follow these simple tips when you have a cold: – Wash your hands often and cover your mouth when coughing and sneezing to prevent sharing your cold with others. – Use humidifiers and vaporizers, especially at night, to help ease respiratory symptoms. – Use over the counter medications for symptom relief such as Tylenol, decongestants, and cough suppressants. Preventing a Cold There are ways you can protect yourself from common cold viruses and boost your immune system in the cold months to avoid getting sick, including: – Avoid touching faucet handles and doorknobs in public spaces. – Always practice good hygiene and handwashing – scrub with soap and water for 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, alcohol

sanitizers are acceptable. It’s the 20 seconds of abrasion between the hands that matters, not the solvent. – Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth. – Avoid close contact with people who are sick. – Get plenty of sleep. – Take a vitamin D supplement or eat foods that are high in immune system boosting nutrients, such as fatty fish, mushrooms, milk, and eggs. – Quit smoking as nicotine decreases the ability of the tiny hairs in our nose and elsewhere to filter air and clear infection causing colds. County Hall Corner Fairness Jazz By Larry Stout

J

azz is considered the one unique contribution that the United States has brought to the world of music. It combines chords into note clusters that are put together in note sequences and then matched in rhythms, which becomes the music’s beat produced in repeating patterns. In other words, jazz sounds random, but actually there is a pattern to it. During the work session of the County Commissioners Meeting held on Tuesday, January 21st, I sensed a jazz pattern in the various topics that arose.

The initial notes were sounded over what, at first, seemed like a fairly routine matter — approving the fee structure for the county’s SALDO (Sub-division and Land Development Ordinance) suggested by the Lycoming County Planning Commission. These are the fees that cover development occurring in municipalities without their own fee assessment plans. Every municipality must have such measures in place, however, 21 out of the 52 municipalities in Lycoming County utilize the county for this purpose. In the proposal, for example, a multi-lot

subdivision of 2-4 lots would be $175.00 plus $20.00 per new lot. While reviewing the fees, there arose very quickly an issue by Commissioner Mussare concerning fairness. Are these new fees appropriate to the service that is being offered? This question was tossed back and forth among the commissioners for some twenty minutes, to which it was finally decided to table the matter to allow more study. The jazz note cluster of fairness had been struck, and the next sequence would be in the matter of the proposed property reassessment proposal. This was not on the agenda, but like jazz, sometimes it just fits in the music. Assessments are the estimated property values that counties, school districts, and municipalities use to calculate tax bills. These need to be periodically updated to capture current market value, or the amount at which someone could sell a property. This has not been done in Lycoming County for well over a decade, so it is long overdue. It was a hot topic in 2019 but was not noted in the recent list of commissioner objectives. But like the elephant in the room, it cannot be neglected forever, and as the commissioners generally discussed this topic, it also found its way to the issue of fairness. By law, any reassessment cannot result in raising taxes, which means that dollar for dollar, every property that is devaluated must be matched by another one that is increased in value. How will this be done fairly? It is no wonder this is a very hot potato, as it would be easier finding a left-handed, blond-haired Navaho who speaks Japanese than finding a Lycoming County homeowner who thinks they should pay more property taxes than they are paying. But the jazz music of fairness was not

done, because at the conclusion of business a gentleman addressed the commissioners during the public comments session to promote the Fair Districts PA initiative. After the 2020 census, the political districts will again need to be redrawn, and this always brings about the debate of gerrymandering, the practice intended to establish an unfair political advantage for a particular party or group by manipulating district boundaries. Fair Districts PA proposes utilizing an independent citizens’ commission that would be impartial and transparent, with clear standards to equality, fairness, and integrity to guide the process. So, what is fair in relation to fee structures, property assessments, and political district boundaries? It is such a subjective matter; this music could easily turn into the Blues. But it need not be so. The inspirational author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. probably summed it up best when he stated, “live so that when your children think of fairness, caring, and integrity, they think of you.” Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. This Week’s LION: Jennifer Lake and DWELL By Larry Stout

T

here is a saying that there are some who make things happen, some who watch things happen, and the others who wonder what happened. It is the hope in this Year of the Volunteer; we can see more folks move into that first category. Jennifer Lake, executive direction and founder of Dwell Foster Care, is definitely one who makes things happen. Growing up through a great deal of trauma in a home full of domestic violence, Jennifer found mentors who came along at a very pivotal point in her life. They changed her life’s trajectory — and now she wants to do the same for others. After years of hard work and preparation, Dwell Orphan Care was formed on January 5, 2019.

Though “orphan” is in the name, it was founded as a non-profit organization, which exists to support foster and adoptive families in Lycoming County and beyond so that children would have a safe, loving, forever home in which to dwell. Jennifer Lake and her husband, Matt, are embodiments of those ideals. They are passionate champions of adoption and foster care through their own example of fostering and adoption as well as the work of Dwell. What is unique about this organization is that it addresses both sides of the adoption/foster process. Getting the child in a good home is the first part, but helping support that family afterward is an area that is sadly neglected. As Jennifer states, “Dwell was created to fill that gap.” The organization has a very ambi-

tious and creative way that volunteers can get involved. They have set up care groups for foster and adoptive moms with a group for dads being developed. They offer birthday boxes for the children and care packages that promote family togetherness and give a break to the parents from time to time. It cannot be emphasized enough how important this support is to adoptive/foster parents, because the sad reality is those in the “system” often come from disturbing and traumatizing situations. One of the reasons Jennifer Lake wanted to start Dwell was because of the high number of parents who ‘returned’ their child after 30-days. They felt inadequate to the challenges they had to face. This is why Dwell is such a valuable resource to our community. They sponsor community trauma-informed trainings and have goals of creating a Family Advoca-

cy Ministry for churches to better support foster and adoptive families. They also provide adoption scholarships. Jennifer beamed as she displayed a picture of a local family that adopted a Down Syndrome child from China. Dwell helped make that happen. The general public can help, as well. Like all non-profits that this column is emphasizing in this Year of the Volunteer, they need enterprising helpers, generous givers, and prayerful friends. Jennifer Lake’s passion is repeated often, “every child deserves a place to dwell.” And not just any place, but a dwelling place that is safe, secure, and loving. All of us can help make that dream come true. [For more information about Dwell, check out their website: dwellorphancare.org. Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. SMART Goals for 2020

T

he holidays are over, and many of us have chosen to create one or more New Year’s resolutions. Based on surveys such as the 2017 study conducted by the Static Brain Research Institute, 41% of American adults will make a resolution. This equates to approximately 100 million people. Unfortunately, however, the odds are against most of us succeeding in the accomplishment of our goals. The same study found that only 9.2% of people that made a resolution achieved their goals

and only 58.4% actually made it through the first month. There may be a better way, however. One possible solution to accomplishing your New Year’s resolutions in 2020 is to take a lesson from business management. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. The term first appeared in the November 1981 issue of Management Review, written by George T. Doran, and was developed as an employee management tool. The original

MURRAY

COLLISION

term used slightly different wording, but the essence of this mnemonic has remained over the years. Though there are many management devices like SMART, its advantage is that it is easy to understand and to know when goals have Dave Bellomo been completed. The SMART concept maintains that if goals are to be met, they should have the following attributes: Specific. Specific goals have a much greater success rate than vague,

nondescript goals. Specificity provides a clear destination. Instead of aiming to get fit, for example, you may be better off aiming to work toward completing a half marathon or losing 10 pounds. Measurable. The more easily a goal can be measured, the more likely that it will be accomplished. Measurable goals allow the goal setter to see incremental progress. If the goal is to run a half marathon, as in the previous example, the goal setter can measure progress by adding small amounts of distance to their workouts over time. If the goal is to lose weight, they can weigh themselves

LIVING WELL on a daily or weekly basis to check their progress. Goals such as managing stress and becoming happier are much more subjective and, thus, more difficult to measure. To realize such goals, it would be beneficial to find a metric to measure such as a lower daily blood pressure or more time spent engaging in a fun hobby. Achievable. Goals that have a chance of succeeding should consist of a series of small changes. For example, eating healthier is a noble pursuit, but going from fast-food junkie to organic vegan may be a stretch. Start small by striving to eat two additional servings of vegetables per day, then gradually work toward major lifestyle changes over time. Realistic. The idea that we can be and do anything we want in life is a fantasy for the most part. That is not to say that dreams do not come true, but that they so rarely become reality is why they are called dreams in the first place. Goal setting is much the same. Deciding to go from sedentary to completing a half marathon over time with proper training is an achievable goal. Going from sedentary to Olympic gold medalist without any training is not particularly realistic. Aim high, but break your

ultimate goal into smaller, more easily accomplished ones. Once you achieve your first goal you can then re-evaluate and set new ones. Time-bound. Setting dates to meet goals works wonders. The dates should follow the other categories of the SMART acronym by being achievable and realistic. It will give you a timetable by which you will be able to plan the small steps along the way to achieving your goal. People that wish to lose weight might aim to lose two pounds per week by exercising to burn an extra 500 calories per day, while decreasing their caloric intake by eating 500 less calories per day. This type of plan allows sufficient time to succeed while providing a clear end-date. Conversely, deciding to lose 100 pounds with no clear plan and no timetable is a much more difficult objective to realize. Most people strive to better themselves and a New Year’s resolution seems to be the perfect way. Though this type of goal setting is well intentioned it rarely leads to success because the goals are vague, unachievable, unrealistic, and have no clear end-date. Instead, make 2020 the best year ever by Living Well and reaching all of your goals the SMART way.

HOME COOKIN amazing food that you didn’t have to spend hours on or go to the store to buy some fancy ingredients. You feel good about having a meal ready for your family, they are happy because it tastes good, and as a family you all connect that day even if only for that 30 minutes of around the table for dinner. No phones. Just you and family. Talk, reminisce, make memories. The recipe this week is so easy, seriously, it takes like 15 minutes to prepare. You can even come watch me make it step by step on my YouTube channel. Search “Andrea’s Country Home Cookin - Crock Pot.” It is so tasty, and your crock pot does all the work. Grab your ingredients, pick a night, and sit down to a family dinner with this delightful crock pot meal. After all, the most important time is family time! Crock-Pot Chicken and Dumplings Ingredients: • 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, cut in chunks and seasoned

• 2 TBSP butter • 1 can cream of chicken soup • 1 small onion, finely diced • 1 package refrigerated biscuit dough, torn into pieces * I cut up the chicken into chunks, seasoned with salt, pepper and chicken seasoning. Then placed in the fridge the night before to make sure the chicken has lots of flavor* Place the chicken, butter, soup, and onion in a slow cooker, and fill with enough water to cover. About a half a cup or so. After 3 hours, I added 2-4 Tbs. of flour to thicken up the broth and a little extra salt for more flavor. Cover, and cook for 5 to 6 hours on High. About 30 minutes before serving, place the torn biscuit dough in the slow cooker. Place lid back on and cook until the dough is no longer raw in the center. Then rub some butter on top of biscuits before serving. Optional: Any veggies! I put in baby carrots an hour before it was ready.

clothing and shoes from any brand for recycling. Many also offer coupons for future purchases. You can find drop-off locations on each company’s website. If your unworn items are in pretty good shape, consider having a swap-party instead of donating or selling. This is a great motivator to clear out closets, and a fun activity to get together with family and friends during the winter. Regardless of whether you end up reselling, donating, swapping, or recycling after a thorough closet cleanout, it’ll feel so good to shed excess and make space in preparation for the warmer days and activities of spring.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “Cemetery Road” by Greg Iles c.2019, Wm. Morrow $28.99 / $35.99 Canada 590 pages

ou can never leave wellenough alone. There you are, always digging, recreating, imagining, tweaking here or there. There’s no answer unattainable, no solution beyond your grip. Good or bad, a “need-to-know” basis is your default position but, as in the new book “Cemetery Road” by Greg Iles, it could get you killed. Marshall McEwan planned to never visit Bienville, Mississippi again. Leaving there had been his salvation years ago, and the key to his success. No, Bienville was a bad memory in Marshall’s rear-view mirror, and he’d planned to keep it that way. And then his father fell ill. Duncan McEwan, owner-publisher of Beinville’s only newspaper, was once a strong voice against injustice

and racism but alcoholism and liver failure were taking a toll on him now, as they had on his relationship with his son in the past. It was only by request from his mother that Marshall went home again. And there was Jet Matheson. They’d been childhood sweethearts once, and Marshall never stopped loving Jet, even though they’d gone their separate ways. Now in Bienville,

residents, although plans went far beyond that. Yes, lives would be destroyed, property damaged, historic lands plundered, but billion-dollar contracts would line the alreadycushioned pockets of wealthy men. It would happen, as long as the Poker Club — led by Jet Matheson’s father-in-law — could keep Marshall McEwen from learning secrets. And they’d do that any way they could… The best place to start with an almost-600-page book is at the

beginning: “Cemetery Road” is very good but not very easy to read. For sure, it’s one of the most realistic novels you’ll consume but emulating real-life means real-life complications: a lot of people to keep track of, a lot of side-issues to remember, and personal histories to learn. It’s like moving to a small town and being expected to intimately know everybody, on-the-spot. And yet, again like real-life, intricacies make things interesting. Here, you get your ubiquitous web of lies and intrigue; some truly

awful, greedy characters, each with a personal agenda; and a BettyVeronica-Archie-type love triangle that comfortably amuses as it blows up within the tale. Yes, author Greg Iles throws a lot at his readers, but he also gives them life rafts so they don’t drift too far off-course. Ultimately, this is an excellent novel if you’ve fallen in love with thrillers but, like many relationships these days, it’s complicated. Give yourself some time, let yourself be absorbed, and you’ll like “Cemetery Road” well enough.

he was divorced but she was not; years ago, Marshall turned Jet away, so she’d married Paul, Marshall’s old friend and the man who’d saved Marshall’s life. If Paul somehow learned that Marshall was sleeping with his wife now, Paul would kill him — if the “Poker Club” didn’t get there first. We too often turn that’s the level of transformation we should be discipleship into a strictly academic pursuit. aiming at in discipleship. Read a book, take a class, pass at test — Second, it must be missional. See Ephesians presto, you’re a disciple. Don’t get me wrong, 4:14-16. principles. Sitting with the crowd at Hard Rock stadium would be exciting, but just imagine being invited to sit in Clark Hunt’s private family luxury suite. Hanging out with the owner of the Chiefs and his closest family and friends would give you a whole different understanding of what’s at stake in a Super Bowl. It would provide a much deeper experience. I doubt that you would ever look at the super bowl the same way again. That’s the power of group level grace. The Core Level Jesus entered into the core level with his three special friends — Peter, James and John. These men were taken into very intimate settings where Jesus fully revealed His nature. Jesus took His core group up into the mountains where He was gloriously transfigured before their eyes — revealing His deity. On another occasion, Jesus took this same group into the Garden of Gethsemane where He pleaded with God to relieve Him of the suffering and shame of the crucifixion - revealing Jesus’ humanity. Picture being invited to stand next to Kansas City head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes during the big game. Can you imagine the intensity of the conversations you would hear? Again, that depth of experience would give you a whole different understanding of the super bowl. That’s the power of core level grace. The question is this: Are you tapping into the transformational graces available at all three levels of relational depth? If not, you are missing out. God has more for you. Go deeper. And go Chiefs and 49ers! Enjoy the game.

discipleship that was deeply relational. Jesus utilized three different levels of relating. I refer to it as relational depth. Each level provides unique forms of transformational grace that are not available at the other levels. For that reason, we must include all three levels in our discipleship processes. Here’s a quick description of each: The Crowd Level Jesus used the crowd level during the sermon on the mount (see Matthew 5). The crowd setting can be powerfully inspiring — and it’s why many Christians attend worship services and concerts. For example, you can watch the Super Bowl in your living room, but nothing could ever compare with sitting in Hard Rock Stadium in Miami and watching it live with 65,000 other fans. The crowd level makes you realize that you are a part of something bigger than yourself — and that is transformational. The crowd setting is not hard to identify. Anytime you are participating in an event where everyone is facing a stage or platform, it’s likely a crowd setting. Most church worship services would fit into this description and it’s why pastors encourage believers to attend worship services. There is grace in the crowd setting, and we want you to tap into it regularly. The Group Level Jesus engaged the group level with His twelve disciples. In this setting, the disciples had access to Jesus that went far deeper than the crowd. Conversations were much more intimate. The disciples often used this time to ask clarifying questions — and Jesus used it to teach them significant Kingdom

s the grip of Mother Nature begins to tighten and the doldrums of winter weather start to make us wonder what we can do to get through the coming cold weather months, there is an outstanding plan that we can work on that will help take our minds off the freezing weather. And, it is something that we should all be working on and is an important key to the successful habitat management, hunting and wildlife sightings we will have over the coming years. I am referring to the critical first step in any management you do, and that is to develop a plan. Whether the acreage you have is large or small, forested or mostly fields, the plan will be your guideline for all future activities. First, it is up to you to decide just what you hope to accomplish on your property. Is your property solely for hunting? Are there any woodlots or forests that need to be managed for

timber growth or for timber stand improvements? Is there water on the property in the form of streams, spring seeps or ponds? What wildlife species do you hope to encourage and develop habitat for? Any thoughts of doing things that will benefit nongame as well as game species? You need to list the answers to these questions and add any factors that will define the goals you have. Then, the good news is that there is an abundance of free advice available to you through various conservation organizations and governmental agencies that will aid you in formalizing your plan. Before we get ahead of ourselves by contacting these agencies, there is another critical step that we should take. You need to do an inventory. Not just of your property, but the surrounding neighbors as well. You need to be aware of what food sources, cover and water are on your grounds and what is available to game nearby. What mast crops currently exist and where? This includes soft and hard

you have your thoughts on paper, it is time to enlist some help from the outside. Conservation organizations such as the National Wild Turkey Federation, Quality Deer Management Association, Ruffed Grouse Society and Trout Unlimited all have members and some staff that have a very substantial background in all types of habitat management and improvement. Even better – these folks are generally very eager to help landowners lay out a plan to enhance their property for all types of wildlife. Additionally, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, the Farm Service Agency and the Penn State Agricultural Extension offices can also provide guidance and possibly on-site visitation to provide advice in developing your land. The listing of your goals, a detailed inventory of your property and the neighboring lands and the enlisting of the help from the various organizations and agencies will provide the solid foundation of a well thought out Management Plan which you can use as a guideline for years to come.

mast producing trees such as apple, pear, and peach as well as various nut trees such as oak, beech, and hickory. Are there any field crops being raised in your area? Corn is usually the big one, but there may be fields of alfalfa, soybeans, oats or wheat that the game in your area will travel to. What cover is available in the area? Heavy forestation, thick stands of mountain laurel or perhaps dense growth of saplings resulting from a recent clearcut? Finally, what water sources are available on your property as well as on the neighbors? This in depth inventory will be critical to deciding how you can best manage what already exists on your property and what will be of greatest benefit to add to make your property more enticing than the neighbors. When the inventory is complete, take a look at your list of goals. Now, you must determine where you need to spend your time and energy. Will it be best to focus on cover first? Perhaps you already have a good stand of acorn producing oak trees and other food sources, or it might be that your best bet is to establish one or several food plots. Now that

Another recent change that garnered some attention was the fluorescent orange ruling. Archery hunters were no longer required to wear fluorescent orange while moving about when hunting deer, bear or elk, Ken and fall turkey hunters Hunter became exempt as well. I’ll admit, after all those years of complying with the fluorescent requirements, I had some difficulty not wearing it, and in fact, I found myself still using it for my own safety. Well, guess what, the changes are still coming, or at least proposed changes are in the works. Eighteen years ago, the Game Commission created the state’s first-ever two-week concurrent buck and doe season. Over the years, that has been altered to our present set-up, with the exception of a few wildlife management units around Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. Now biologists

guess it’s a sign that I’m getting older, or maybe I am old, and I’m just beginning to realize it, but it seems like change comes more frequently these days. Some changes may be good, some changes may not be so good, and some may be irrelevant. Of course, as an outdoor writer and an avid outdoorsman, I pay particular attention to what’s happening in the hunting and fishing world largely because I don’t want to break any game and fish laws inadvertently. One of the biggest and most controversial changes, of course, was the changing of the opening day of the firearms deer season from the traditional Monday to a Saturday. Some liked it, and some did not. Where all this will settle out remains to be seen, but one thing’s for certain-it got the attention of Pennsylvania hunters.

hunters may not even be aware of what is required at present; right now, if a hunter shoots a deer, it must be properly tagged before attempting to shoot a second deer assuming, of course, you have a tag for a second deer. Some units in the Philadelphia area are exempt from this ruling, but now there is consideration being given to make it uniform throughout the state. There are some pros and cons to the ruling. I don’t want to create a disturbance by climbing out of my archery tree stand to tag a deer, especially if I have a another tag and an opportunity for another deer, but I also see a downside to the scenario. The downside is how many deer may be hit but not followed up on properly while a second deer is pursued? Trust me, I haven’t covered all the potential changes being considered, but I’m out of room for now. I’ll try to stay informed, but I’ll admit it’s getting harder to keep up with the changes, or maybe it’s always been that way, and I’m just getting older.

are recommending a statewide concurrent buck and doe season for next year. You can bet that this, too, will set off its share of controversy. Commissioners will vote on that at their Jan. 24-25 meeting, so by the time you read this, we may have an answer. Another big issue that created its share of disagreement among outdoorsmen, and the farming community as well, was the move to open some hunting to Sundays. Act 147 passed House and Senate and was signed by Governor Wolf in November. One Sunday will be added to the archery season, and one will be added to the rifle deer season. It appears that the third Sunday will likely be added to the bear season, but that will be decided at the commission meeting. While I personally am not a fan of Sunday hunting, I’m not surprised that it is coming to Pennsylvania, at least on a limited basis. I’m sure there will be more changes to this in the future. Another interesting change being looked at regards the tagging of deer. I suspect a lot of

While they were crowned the best team in the AFL, they weren’t looked upon as the favorite team in Dallas, where the majority of football fans didn’t value them as being on the same level as the Dallas Cowboys that had gained a franchise in the NFL. A year later, team owner and one of the founders of the AFL, Lamar Hunt, moved the Texans to Kansas City, where they became the Chiefs. The AFL’s eight original teams remained intact until 1970 when the teams became part of the merger with the National Football League. Following the merger, the Oilers moved from Jeppesen Stadium to the Astrodome in 1970, where they remained until owner Bud Adams moved the team to Nashville, where they became the Titans in 1999. The Chiefs punched their Super Bowl LIV tickets by beating that relocated Houston franchise 35-24 two weeks ago. Did someone once say history has a way of repeating itself? Speaking of football, those following the career of South Williamsport High School and Lehigh University record-breaking running back Dominick Bragalone may be interested to know he has signed on to play with the Duke City Gladiators in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The Gladiators, who won back-to-back championships in the CIF (Champions Indoor Football), have moved to the larger-market Indoor Football League (IFL) for the upcoming 2020 season. Bragalone will report to the team for their pre-season training camp on February 28. The Gladiators will begin their 13-team IFL schedule on March 12 with the league schedule running through June 27.

in a photo frame are three prized tickets from my college days at the University of Houston. One is from the Houston Colt .45’s first MLB game (cost $2.50); one a 20-yard line seat for a UH/Texas A&M football game ($1.25); and the third for a Houston Oilers game against the Dallas Texans for which I shelled out $2.00. That’s a lot of sports entertainment for $5.75! In those early days of the old American Football League, the league was comprised of eight teams split into two divisions. The Oilers played in the East with the Boston Patriots, Buffalo Bills and New York Titans. The Oakland Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, Denver Broncos, and the Texans made-up the western division. The Oilers played their home games in Jeppesen Stadium, a converted high school stadium located across the street from my dorm room on the Houston campus. The Oilers were the dominant team in those early AFL years, winning the league’s first two championships. They were led by QB George Blanda, running back Billy Cannon and wide receivers Charley Hennigan and Bill Groman. They were a hot ticket and entertaining to watch. They were also public relations savvy and offered college students $2.00 end zone tickets for every game. The students provided added enthusiasm, and the Oilers hung championship banners. On December 23, 1962, the Oilers were seeking its third consecutive title against the rival Texans with 37,981 looking on in Houston. In what was one of the most memorable games played in the league’s existence, the Texans defeated the favored Oilers 20-17 in a doubleovertime thriller.

Sporting Matters with Spence…

Let the Kid Play

I

genuinely believe there are two sides to every story. Rumors and speculations are everywhere, and I usually refrain from commenting online. There are several buzzes within our local community. I have no comment with regards to Myrtle. What a mess. But I would like to chime in on a situation that I am close to. Hanief Clay is only 15 years old, and this talented young man has already been through more than most. He has a full head of hair and a terrific smile. Hanief ’s father got into some trouble, and his mother tragically lost her battle. He now lives with his Gram on the east end of town. Their house is within walking distance of St. John. Hanief transferred to SJNRA over the summer. It was totally his family’s choice, and he is doing quite well. Our small little school is a good fit for him both academically and socially. EVERYBODY loves Hanief. Trust me. He is a tremendous kid, very polite, and rather well-spoken. I am extremely proud of him and his resolve. He is a rock, and there is absolutely nothing that can phase him. Hanief is a key member of Golden Knight’s hoops team. He is our squad’s leader both on and off the court. I have never coached anyone with his motor or drive. Hanief is a total team player and he is constantly looking for ways to get better. He is a super quick guard with incredible vision. This crafty young lefty can certainly play. But he can only practice. Hanief isn’t allowed to

participate in any of our games. Confused? Let me explain. Hanief Clay was declared ineligible by the PIAA District 4 Committee on November 14th. His previous school decided to protest his transfer and questioned his motives. They also accused local NBA Superstar Alize Johnson of insider trading. Hanief was there in person when six total strangers voted unanimously. They told this 15-year-old kid that he wasn’t allowed to play for the entire 2019-20 season. It was rather disturbing. I bit my tongue and stayed silent as Hanief could appeal with the overall PIAA Board of Directors. We were very hopeful. The meeting took place this past Wednesday in Harrisburg. Another panel denied Hanief Clay the opportunity to play basketball by a 4-3 vote. I have yet to see the latest ruling in writing, but I did get a copy from District 4 explaining their reasoning. I will not attempt to paraphrase. Here is page 2 word for word. I have a screenshot. Please disregard all of the mishaps and poor grammar. You would think that someone would actually proofread. “During June 2019, Hanief attended an extended trip with a family friend, NBA player, and former St. John Neumann basketball standout Alize Johnson, along with Alize’s two brothers who are players on the St. John Neumann Regional Academy team. “Based on the information provided

CATHERINE BURNS INSURANCE SERVICES

and the circumstances involved, the Hearing Panel concluded that it did not benefit him educationally, economically, socially or emotionally for Hanief to transfer to St. John Neumann Regional Academy other than to play for a less successful, smaller enrollment classification, Jamie and/or lower profile team Spencer in order to be ranked higher among the students on the team. It was also determined that Hanief sought out Athletic Personnel and/ or student/athletes at the school to which he transferred and/or individuals affiliated with the school to which he transferred engaged in recruiting the student for the purposes of participating in athletics. “On the basis of the foregoing, the District 4 Hearing Panel, by a unanimous (6-0) vote, determined that Hanief ’s basketball eligibility is denied for one year from the date of his enrollment at St. John Neumann Regional Academy. This decision is made for the reason that Hanief ’s transfer was materially motivated by an athletic purpose with regard to basketball and within the meaning of ARTICLE VI of the PIAA ByLaws. Hanief is permitted to practice with the St. John Neumann Regional basketball, and is otherwise eligible to participate in all other sports.” This document was signed by James Zack, who is the PIAA District IV Chairman. My head hurts. Try using a few commas,

Jim. OK. Here it goes. Hanief and his grandmother made the decision to transfer. Period. Alize Johnson is not an agent for SJNRA. For any adult to accuse him of such is just disingenuous. Alize has done so much for the entire community. He built four new basketball courts and provides many turkeys. Alize also provides shoes to several area hoops teams. Well. Minus one. You penalize a 15-year-old kid for going on a trip with a long-time family friend? Especially after he was already enrolled. Insane. Hanief is allowed to play any other sport at SJNRA. He just can’t participate in any of our basketball games. I am very disappointed with some of my so-called friends. Here they constantly insist that they are all about the kids. Maybe we will someday get their side of the story. Perhaps they will release a very vague statement two years from now. Hanief will be just fine. He is a warrior and will continue to shine. This youngster continues to battle. He views this as a blessing. The PIAA is a disaster. There is so much ambiguity and corruption. Mr. Zack and the boys have total control. I find it funny that they haven’t released any financial information for the past three years. Seriously. Where does all the money go? I am still upset over the recent verdict. This entire situation smells. Eligibility? Agents? Come on man. I personally know four other kids in our area. They are currently playing basketball for public schools and they do not live in their districts. I won’t mention any names, because I am totally fine with it. Enjoy your season. Let the kid play. Cheers.
