Aiden, now a senior, has followed up an All-State caliber football season at linebacker, with an All-State basketball season. His 44-point effort against St. John Neumann was something special. He will be continuing his academic and athletic careers at West Chester University, where he will be playing football. Congrats, Aiden! Remember, just keep hitting anything that moves, and you’ll be just fine. Good luck, my man! God Bless America.

here are many ways to say, “I love you,” For Valentine’s Day celebrants, various sentiments may be expressed with candy — particularly candy hearts. Candy hearts, also called Conversation Hearts® and Sweethearts® (similarly Love Hearts in the UK), are sweet, chalky confections that have been around for more than 100 years. The conversation about candy hearts began back in 1847 when Oliver Chase, a Boston pharmacist, wanted to get in on the apothecary lozenge craze that was popular at the time. Lozenges were common remedies for sore throats and bad breath and were growing in popularity as a convenient medical treatment. Chase invented a machine that could roll out lozenge dough and press it into perfect discs, a time-saving improvement on the manual process used until then. Chase eventually abandoned making lozenges and the pharmacy business, ultimately realizing his machine could be used to make candies. He formed the New England Confectionery Company and began producing what would eventually be known as NECCO wafers. Wanting to get in on his brother’s candy empire, Daniel Chase saw an opportunity to build on the growing popularity of Valentine’s cards by printing words on candy with vegetable dye during the cutting process. In 1866, conversation candies began as round confections and were much bigger than today’s heart varieties. It wouldn’t be until 1902 that conversation candy hearts became available.

THE

Through the years, the candies became smaller and the sentiments expressed on the hearts have been updated to stay current with the times. Phrases like “LOL,” “BFF” and “Text me” have replaced some less modern sentiments. At the height of the candies’ popularity, NECCO estimated that it made nearly 100,000 pounds of the hearts each day throughout the year in preparation for Valentine’s Day. In 2019, NECCO filed for bankruptcy and did not produce the iconic candy hearts while it was being purchased by an investment company called Round Hill Investments, LLC. Round Hill decided to sell NECCO to another candy company. Fortune magazine reported Spangler Candy Co., which took over rights to NECCO’s iconic brands, would manufacture candy hearts in 2020. Similar conversation hearts also are available through Brach’s candy company. Candy hearts have long been a way to share sweet words of affection and a sugary treat with the ones you love.

hocolate is often described as “decadent,” and rightfully so. Few foods can make people feel as if they’re being indulgent as well as chocolate. Perhaps that’s what makes chocolate such a great fit for Valentine’s Day. When giving that special someone some chocolate on February 14, you’re not just giving them something delicious, but also a chance to indulge in a forbidden fruit. But chocolate desserts can be more than merely decadent. In fact, this recipe for “Pasticcio di Cioccolato con Lampone (Individual Chocolate Cakes With Fresh Raspberries)” from Michael White and Joanna Pruess’ “Fiamma: The Essence of Contemporary Italian Cooking” (Wiley) is both decadent and, thanks to the fresh raspberries, refreshing. The individual cake is an ideal Valentine’s Day gift, as it serves to emphasize how that special someone is the only one for you.

Bake in the center of the oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick or knife inserted in the center of one cupcake comes out clean. Remove and cool completely on a rack. While the cupcakes are cooling, combine the heavy cream with the confectioners’ sugar and the remaining 2 tablespoons of cocoa, beat into soft peaks, and set aside. Remove the cupcakes from the tin and place them on dessert plates. Spoon the whipped cream on top, divide the raspberries among the plates and serve.

Pasticcino di Cioccolato con Lampone (Individual Chocolate Cakes With Fresh Raspberries) Makes 8 servings Ingredients: • 11⁄3 cups cake flour, sifted • 1⁄3 cup plus 2 tablespoons cocoa powder, sifted • 1⁄4 teaspoon baking soda

6 tablespoons unsalted butter • 6 large eggs • 1 cup granulated sugar • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract • 1 cup heavy cream • 1⁄4 cup confectioners’ sugar, sifted • 1 pint fresh raspberries • Vegetable cooking spray • Pinch of sea salt Directions: Preheat the oven to 325 F. Spray a standard muffin tin with nonstick spray or fill 8 of the cups with paper or foil liners. Sift the flour, 1⁄3 cup of cocoa, salt, and baking soda into a bowl and set aside. Melt the butter in a small saucepan and set aside.

Combine the eggs and sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a whisk attachment. Set the bowl over a pan partially filled with simmering water. The water should not touch the bowl. Using a whisk, beat the egg-sugar mixture until it feels very warm to the touch and all of the sugar has dissolved. Immediately remove the bowl from the heat and transfer it to the electic mixer. Whip the egg-sugar mixture on medium speed for 3 to 4 minutes until it triples in volume and is very thick and light colored. Add the vanilla and whip 2 to 3 seconds longer to blend. Remove the bowl from the mixer and gently fold in the flour-cocoa mixture. Place about 11⁄2 cups of the batter in a

he public schools of Williamsport very appropriately and very actively observed the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln, on Friday, and it was a day which live long in the memory of those who participated. Patriotism was displayed everywhere and by everyone in the fullest measure possible. The main celebration took place in Association Hall and was crowded with grammar school pupils, members of the Grand Army of the Republic, school directors, and teachers. The pupils assembled at the different school buildings and marched as a body to Association Hall. On the stage sat the grizzled veterans of the G.A.R., and the

scene was an inspiring one, the patriotic songs being rendered by the children being especially effective. The stage was beautifully decorated with the Stars and Stripes and a fine portrait of Lincoln being seen in the center. There was an elegant souvenir program that many took home and will no doubt try to preserve. Charles Lose, superintendent of schools presided over the event. It included the singing of a patriotic hymn and an invocation by Joseph McMinn, chaplain of the Reno Post of the G.A.R. Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address was recited by Carl Schaefer. At the high school there was an interesting Lincoln commemoration in the morning and in the afternoon a commemoration of the centenary of the birth of Charles Darwin.

I can’t believe my parents didn’t have insurance! Unfortunately, we’ve heard those exact words when making funeral arrangements with families. The death of a loved one is stressful enough, but to all of the sudden be financially responsible only compounds the situation. At a time when you should be celebrating someone’s life you are now faced with setting up a GoFundMe account. Although it may be a difficult conversation to broach, discussing a loved one’s final wishes as well as knowing they are financially prepared can alleviate a lot of anxiety. To discuss funeral pre-planning and the different ways to fund your wishes, please give us a call and one of our licensed funeral directors can meet with you and discuss your options.

his week marks the 211th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln. Still, most people do not realize that this beloved political icon has a significant tie to Williamsport. With that same connection, Williamsport is also linked to legendary pioneer woodsman, Daniel Boone. William Winters was a land speculator and landowner from the area near Reading in Berks County. At the age of 19, he married Ann Boone, sister of Daniel Boone, the legendary frontiersman, and pioneer. Their union produced 11 children, and among these children was Hannah Winters, who was their oldest daughter. She would end up moving to Rockingham County, Virginia, where she would meet and marry Abraham Lincoln, who was the namesake and would become grandfather to President Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln owned a farm in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and supposedly visited his father-in-law, William Winters, at what

is now Williamsport, around 1780. Lincoln had moved to Kentucky and, according to John Linn’s “History of Centre County,” passed through the Bellefonte area on his way back to Kentucky, accompanied by his brotherin-law, John Winters, after having left from William Winters’ farm here in the Williamsport area. Hannah and Abraham Lincoln’s son, Thomas was born, and later married Nancy Hanks, and they were to become the parents of the future President of United States, who would bear his grandfather’s name. Lincoln’s great-grandfather, William Winters, played a role in the events leading to the founding of Williamsport. According to a 1986 Grit article, citing John Meginness’ monumental “History of Lycoming County,” in 1778, Winters purchased a tract of land belonging to Amariah Sutton, that was located in the area which is now in the western part of the city of Williamsport, just east of Lycoming Creek. In 1791, Winters bought another 287

“As I turned 40, I never dreamed that a blockage could change my life in an instant. When I lost feeling in my arm, I knew I had to get help fast, before the pain moved to my chest. The team at UPMC quickly diagnosed the blockage and performed a cardiac catherization. After the procedure, the cardiac rehabilitation experts were able to get me back to living for the things that matter… my family.”

LINCOLN

acres, which was known as the “Virginia Tract,” from his brother-in-law, Hawkins Boone, brother of the famous Daniel Boone. This is the same tract of land on which the city of Williamsport would be laid out when it was designated the county seat of Lycoming County in 1796. Shortly before Winters’ death in 1794, he sold this tract of land to Michael Ross, the founder of Williamsport. Some of the first court sessions of the new Lycoming County were held at

Winters’ former farmhouse in the area near what is today the intersection of Rose and West Fourth streets. These sessions were held in 1796 and 1797 in the house that was occupied by Winters’ second wife, Eleanor Campbell Winters. His first wife, Hannah, died in 1771. It is unknown where Hannah is buried. Winters died in 1794 and is buried locally. At first, he was buried in the small graveyard in the area of where West Fourth and Cemetery streets, where the former Calvary United

Methodist Church now sits. He was later disinterred and re-interred at the Wildwood Cemetery. Another Williamsport connection to Abraham Lincoln, the “Great Emancipator,” is James Pollock, who served as a former judge of the court of common pleas for Lycoming County, which was then part of the Eighth Judicial District. He also was elected as Governor of Pennsylvania in 1854. Pollock was born in Milton and later served with Abraham Lincoln in the U.S. House of Representatives. The two became good friends, having resided at

the same Washington boardinghouse. Later, after Lincoln became President, he named Pollock as director of the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. It was at Pollock’s behest that all U.S. coins and currency were inscribed with the words, “In God We Trust.” So, as you can see, Williamsport has quite a connection to our beloved 16th President and the 211th anniversary of his birth is a period of celebration but also one of reflection in which we pause to remember and consider his significant place in the history of this republic.

County Hall Corner The New District Attorney, Ryan Gardner By Larry Stout

R

yan Gardner has the physique that would make it easier to believe that he was a fitness trainer rather than a district attorney, but in some ways, he is trying to get someone into shape. Actually, not a ‘someone’ but a ‘something,’ and that something is the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office. His strong stature came from growing

up on the family farm in Upper Fairfield Township. But despite the fact that the farm had been in his family since the 1700s, he did not have farming in his blood. He was drawn to law and served for a time as an Assistant District Attorney for Lycoming County. Though he enjoyed the work, the salaries for ADAs at that time were very low, so Gardner decided to go into private practice. But as the years passed, he became more and more concerned

about crime in the county and felt that he could do something about it. Slowly but surely, it became apparent that he did not just believe that he could be the Lycoming County District Attorney, but that he should be. Gardner’s campaign through 2019 for the office was highly focused. He promised to be tough on crime and to cut through the office’s massive backlog of cases. Winning the primaries of both parties in May, he prepared for November, knowing that he was assured of winning the office. Somewhat freed up because of this, he intended to hit the ground running in January.

And hit it he did. Gardner interviewed everyone in the DA’s office to know what

COUNTY HALL they did and then compared it to the job description for that position. His farm background taught him the value of a strong work ethic, and he wanted those who worked with him to share those values. He did not just want to know what the historical expectations of each of these positions were as much as what they were capable of doing. The case backlog was the driving force in the office. When Gardner had been an ADA, there was a revolving trial list of around 250, which he deemed manageable. However, in recent years the case log was stuck in excess of 400, and he felt that it was not as much a rise in crime as much as disorganization and inefficiency. Gardner devoted hundreds and hundreds of hours in studying these problems before he formally took office in January. At the first County Commissioner’s Meeting of the new year, Gardner presented his massive reorganization plan, which involved eliminating clerical positions, shuffling workloads, and hiring two new detectives. The new Commissioner board had been thoroughly briefed on the plan and wholeheartedly approved it. Now, five weeks in, the District Attorney’s Office has already been able

to dispose of 70 cases, plus expecting a number of others to plead out in the next week or two. But what is also evident is a whole new attitude in the office. It is evident that the atmosphere has changed. People enjoy coming to work because they see fruit coming from their efforts. But Ryan Gardner intends to keep his pedal to the metal. He knows that pursuing justice is fluid, and it takes patient diligence to achieve the goals of protecting the community, reducing recidivism, and all the while being cost-conscious. Lycoming County has a District Attorney who is giving 110 percent and an office that appears to be totally committed to his leadership. The commissioners and the judges appear quite supportive as well. But the public can help as well. If a crime occurs, report everything that is seen to the police. It will help law enforcement and prosecutors who work to find the truth and seek justice. There is a lot of pessimism in the community concerning crime, but perhaps we can take hope that a change has come. Larry Stout welcomes your comments or input. He can be reached by email: lionwebbweekly@gmail.com.

aving studied leadership for going on three decades and getting to rub shoulders with a number of leaders from all parts of the globe, I have discovered that there is one attribute that many share, which is rarely noted — their ability to remember names. Bill Clinton, for

There was even one man who claimed that he met Clinton again after meeting him twenty years before, and Clinton not only remembered his name, he even remembered the names of his father and mother! The reason why this is so critical for anyone wanting to aspire to an office

money to support himself to make running for the office a full-time job for an entire year. In that year, he visited every borough and township in the county and every precinct in Williamsport. He estimated that he met and talked with over 5,000 people. And he lost. It was a solo run, and that is never enough. It starts with getting on the ballot in the primaries. A person who wishes to run for Pennsylvania State Assembly needs 300 registered voters to sign their petition to get on the ballot.

It is this connection that those that are running for office need because without volunteer helpers, a candidate is doomed. Money and time are often listed as essentials to running for office, but without help, they are doomed. For State Senate, it is 500, and as the position grows, so do the numbers; State Auditor General – 1,000 signatures, State Treasurer – 1,000, State Attorney General – 1,000, and to get on the ballot as a Presidential candidate – 2,000. As my wife and I were circulating petitions for various offices, it was astounding how few people understand this process. One individual was shocked that we had a petition for President Trump — not shocked we were supporting him — shocked that he was not “automatically” going to be the Republican candidate for President. I explained that though some see him as having dictatorial powers, even he has to go through the electoral process like everyone else. It is extremely hard for candidates to find these kinds of volunteers. Going door to door to get petitions signed is like being a door-to-door salesman — which everyone hates! Being willing to stand in a booth at a trade show or public event and discuss the pros and cons of various candidates is also not

easy. Those who oppose the candidate that is being advocated will use the volunteer as a punching bag, which is never pleasant. Even the simple task of putting out campaign signs is timeconsuming, as is the necessary task of picking them up after the election. These front-line volunteer troops who are giving their time and energy to support candidates they believe in deserve all the appreciation they can get because it is a thankless, grueling task. They also deserve recognition, because the campaign volunteer is the true patriot. They are willing to be an active participant in the political process. It is this volunteer contribution that truly sets the United States apart in the world’s democracies. family. Valentine’s Day just isn’t for couples. It’s a celebration of love for family, friends, and people who make you smile each day. This Valentine’s Day is on a Friday, and typically on Valentine’s Day, we spend it with our kids, then the weekend after we go with our friends to Happy Acres and enjoy their special Valentine’s dinner for two. For the past five years, we have celebrated Valentine’s Day as a couple, the weekend after, with our friends, and wouldn’t want it any other way. This year, we are going out on Valentine’s night with our friends to Happy Acres. We will take our kids to Hoopla’s one night next week and have our Valentine’s celebration with them first. They get super excited when our babysitter comes over anyways. We rarely get a babysitter, because our kids go with us wherever we go. Will I feel guilty on Friday night, Valentine’s, leaving them? Maybe a little, but I don’t think one Valentine’s night away will change anything. They know they are loved, and know mom and dad sometimes need a night out! So, if you are going out this Valentine’s, enjoy a meal at Happy Acres, or even Waltz Creamery! Stay in and get a pizza or cook for the ones you love. Some people think Valentine’s Day is cheesy, but it’s a day just to celebrate everyone you love. Most important, tell them you love them. Life is short, let’s celebrate every chance we can, no matter

But when you invest in finer-made pieces and repair items to extend their lifespan, you’ll reduce waste and keep your wardrobe looking flawless. Beyond a sewing kit, also pick up a travel steamer to refresh garments instead of washing them after every wear, a stain remover, and a fabric depiller. These handy tools will help you maintain your clothes and set you on the path towards a more sustainable wardrobe.

Artisan Hearing Technologies, LLC Adding Quality of Life Everyday

“I had a hearing problem, but I would not admit it. The family was always after me to get a hearing test. I heard about Artisan Hearing Technologies and I thought I would try it, I drove past the office a few times before I finally stopped in and had a hearing test. I had hearing loss. No pressure from Jennifer Burget, but I decided to take a hearing aid out on a 2 week trial. I was very surprised at what I was hearing, no more repeating myself, no more huh. The TV volume went down. I love the app for my smart phone, it’s great! If you want the best hearing aids and service I recommend Jennifer at Artisan Hearing Technologies.” ~ John McDermott

Local Strongman Takes Teen Division in White Plains By Dave Bellomo

H

aving taken 2nd place in the Teen Division in PA’s Strongest Man last Fall, local strongman, Adam W. Grimes II, recently continued his success by taking 1st place in the in New York’s Strongest Man Teen Division. The contest was held on January 18th at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York. There were 159 competitors, making it one of the

largest amateur strongman events in the United States. 360-pound Grimes competed in five events, including the press medley, Jeep tire deadlift, sandbag carry, frame carry/drag, and the atlas stone. Press medley: Four implements of increasing weights were lifted. Lifters alternated, lifting a thick-handled axle bar, a 10inch log, an axle, then another log. The weights began at 150 pounds and went up to 200 pounds. In this event,

“The bar felt light, and I intentionally stopped with nine repetitions.” His nearest competitor only had six. Sandbag carry: A 220-pound sandbag carry for maximum distance with a 60-second time-limit. The athlete had to pick up and carry the sandbag against their torso along a 50-foot track turning at each end. This event was quite challenging; despite this, he made it 138 feet, which was the winning distance. Frame carry/drag: The athletes had to carry a 450-pound frame, barehanded, down a 60-foot

the goal was not only to press all of the implements overhead but to press them in the fastest time. Grimes said he is not a big fan of medley events but that he did have a lot of fun with it and was able to finish first. Jeep Tire Deadlift: A standard deadlift bar was loaded with a Jeep tire on each side and weights to bring it up to 405 pounds. Lifters had to stand on a small platform, so the bar was at a standard height of nine inches. With the deadlift being Grimes’ favorite event, he was very excited. Having put a lot of time into perfecting his deadlift technique, he easily won the event. Grimes said,

STRONGMAN track for time and distance with a 60-second time-limit. Once the frame crossed the mark, it had to be dropped and dragged backward by two ropes attached to the frame. Grimes quickly completed the event in a time of 30 seconds, which was the fastest time in his division. Atlas stone: In this event, competitors had to lift a 225-pound stone and load it over a 48-inch-high bar. When asked if he was looking forward to this event, in particular, Grimes replied, “Not really,” as it was one in which he

lacked experience. In spite of this, he managed to load the stone five times in 60 seconds, beating his nearest competitor by just a single repetition. Grimes said, “I had a pretty good time competing at New York’s Strongest. There were a lot of great competitors and fun events. Since I won first place, I also qualified to go to 2020 nationals, but I plan on holding off until 2021.” He attributes his success to his father for training him, to his wife and mother for their support, and to his faith in God. “I could not have done it without all of you,” Grimes commented.

that you just can’t seem to cut them off. I must confess that I gleaned this description of a needy person from a dating blog – it was the first site that came up when I typed define a needy person into my search bar. I have a feeling that most of us have needy people in our lives. We instinctively let out a long sigh if we see their name on caller ID, or we duck behind a rack of clothes if we see them at the mall. It’s not that we don’t care about them or love them, it’s just that we can’t afford the endless drama and the constant drain on our time, emotions and wallet.

Our church is currently in a season where we are reaffirming our mission, purpose and vision. We do this on occasion to make sure we haven’t experienced mission drift. Mission drift is very subtle, and that’s why every organization must take time to reaffirm their guiding principles. Our church purpose statement is this: We purpose to be a place where anyone can believe, belong and become in Jesus Christ. In this article, we’re going to consider one fundamental aspect of what it means to be a place where people can believe in Jesus – something every

Christian church values. Did you know that churches can be needy? Take a moment to reread the description of a needy person, but instead of picturing an individual, picture a church. Sadly, I have been in some churches where that description fits. I’m not passing judgement – I’m just recognizing that churches sometimes suffer long seasons of neediness. Instead of being ready to pour grace on others, they are constantly trying to get something from others—attendance, money, volunteerism, validation. That neediness is off-putting. Like needy people, needy churches are not attractive, nor are they easy to be around. Friends, if we are going to be a church where

of God’s grace that is available through the Word of God, Prayer, the Holy Spirit, the Body of Christ and the Mission of God. To be a place where people can believe in Jesus, each believer must seek to daily fill their lives with God’s grace. If our individual cups are overflowing, then we will have the ability to . . . Genuinely love and serve our brothers and sisters in Christ. As we love and serve each other (See Acts 2:42-47, 4:32-37 and Galatians 6:10), our Body of Christ will be a reservoir overflowing with grace. Our generosity and compassion must first flow to our brothers and sisters in

Christ. That’s what the early church did and it overflowed with so much grace that it turned the world upside down! When we genuinely love one another deeply from the heart, we will have the ability to . . . Genuinely love and receive those who are weary and heavy laden. See Matthew 11:28. Their cups aren’t overflowing. They are lost and broken. They are thirsty and long to be filled with grace. God will see our overflow and He will send them to us so their cups can be filled. When we overflow with grace, we are a place where people can believe in Jesus.

Jesus’ life overflowed with grace. His heart ached for the lost and broken. He wanted to be with them, to save and heal them. The religious rulers disapproved of Him, “Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners. He receives sinners and eats with them.” See Luke 7:34 and 15:2. Because of the overflow of grace in His life, Jesus was able to pour grace on others. If the religious leaders watched us church people today, would we be worthy of the same criticism they leveled on Jesus? Would they call us a friend to sinners? Are the lost and broken welcome at our churches? Not too long ago, a person criticized our church for gaining a reputation of being a place where sinners

are welcome to attend. I think they meant it as an insult – but it was actually one of the highest compliments our church has ever received. They simply affirmed that our church overflows with grace, and when the weary and heavy laden show up – we’re ready to pour grace on them. Thanks be to God! His grace is amazing! Friends, God is not asking for us to approve sinners. Nor is He asking us to judge them. He alone is the Judge and He alone has the authority to approve. All He asks is that we overflow with grace so that we can receive them and allow His love and grace to flow into them. When we do, our churches will be places where anyone can believe in Jesus Christ. Amen.

a sense that control in one’s life is extremely limited. Coupled with the beginnings of physical and cognitive decline, stress is at an all-time high. Possible reasons for high levels of well-being for the young and old, versus the dip in middleage, are the different levels of perceived stress and responsibility. The young have the perception of being seemingly invincible and have few responsibilities outside of themselves. In contrast, seniors generally have accepted things in the past and have come to enjoy simple things such as social interaction. All is not lost, however, for those of us in our 40s and 50s. For one thing, we can expect an upward turn in our level of happiness, as Blanchflower showed with his extensive research. In addition, things such as exercise, stress management, social support, and intellectual stimulation can help us regain a sense of control and make us more resilient to life’s challenges. The bad news is that if you are approaching 47, things are going to get rough. The good news, however, is that after 47, there is nowhere to go but up.

life. One possible explanation is that people learn to accept their strengths and weaknesses and give up on unreasonable expectations. Another reason people see a mid-life dip in happiness is that they see changes in life and eventually come to be grateful for what they have. Blanchflower states, “I have seen school-friends die and come eventually to value my blessings during my remaining years.” Last, it could be that people that are generally happy live longer, thus showing the increasing levels of life satisfaction in their later years. The middle of a person’s lifespan is a time when they are faced with many responsibilities and challenges, including social, physical, and psychological changes. It is no wonder that middle-aged people are often called the “Sandwich Generation,” having to care for both their children as well as their parents. Though people in their middle years usually have a higher income than those that are young or those that are retired, they are strained with the financial demands of a mortgage, auto loans, and helping their children with college tuition. The Roving Sportsman… Prepping for Spring Gobbler Season By Jon Pries

I

n life there are procrastinators and there are those who like to stay well ahead of the game, so as to not get caught short at the last minute. Keeping in mind that the Youth Hunt for spring gobblers is on Saturday, April 25, 2020, and that the statewide spring gobbler season will begin on Saturday, May 2, 2020, why not take time during a few of these less than pleasant winter days to do a thorough inventory of our equipment while there is plenty of time to repair or replace as necessary. Begin by emptying out your turkey vest onto a workbench or tabletop. Check the mouth calls you have to make sure they are sounding as you like them to sound, and then secure them back into the vest. Slate and glass pot calls should be conditioned, worked to check their sound, then reconditioned once more and placed back in your vest. If you can find one, Tupperware makes a really solid container that most slate and class calls will fit into and it does a great job of protecting the calls from breakage. Chalk, check the sound and then rechalk your box call, and return it to a box call holster and back into your vest. Make sure you have a good sounding crow call and owl hooter, as they are two of the best locator calls for our nearby turkey woods. Place each of your locator calls in its own Ziploc bag to protect it from unwanted debris that always seems to creep into the

turkey vest pockets. Probably one of the most critical “gadgets” you can carry is a ThermaCell insect repellant unit. I have successfully used this item throughout the southeastern United States, and once along a swamp edge in the northeast. There is nothing as annoying and distracting as a swarm of mosquitoes that begins to arrive just after sunrise – especially if you have been negligent and have forgotten your ThermaCell! Yes, that happened to me several years ago in Florida. I smiled as dawn was breaking and two longbeards began to sound off in a tree a mere 80 yards from where I was sitting at the base of a palm tree. Shortly thereafter, I began to hear the buzzing of the mosquitoes that always seem to show up out of nowhere at sunrise. I had left my ThermaCell in camp, and now had to try to remain motionless as the two gobblers were peering down at their surroundings to locate a safe place to land. I gritted my teeth as the mosquitoes began boring into my neck and ears! Every hunter that I ever talked to about this magical insect repeller swears by it and is amazed at just how effective it is against buzzing insects of all kinds. Make sure you also have spare butane containers and spare insect repellant pads for the unit. You should be carrying a pair of pruning shears or clippers. The safest place to sit for hunting spring turkeys is with your back against a large tree. Often, there may be

have gotten away. Like much of the gear available to turkey hunters, specific ammunition for turkey hunting is continually evolving. One of the most recent entries into the market is the Federal Premium Heavyweight TSS Turkey Shotshell. Available in .410, 20 gauge and 12 gauge, it delivers a tight pattern of dense tungsten shot on target for maximum penetration at long range. Last spring, I know of an outfitter in Florida who insisted that his clients all use this very effective TSS loads. The results were 26 hunters taking 26 longbeards! Get ahead of the game by examining your equipment now, and, if need be, you will have plenty of time to repair, replace or add to your gear before the last minute rush just before the season opens.

The only other “feeding frenzy” I witnessed last week on the ice was a couple of my fishing buddies parked on their ice sleds feeding their faces, which is a good option if the fish aren’t feeding. Tim Herr and Steve Naylor munched on venison hotdogs and tater tots freshly cooked — they even shared with the rest of us. The bottom line is, you can sit in one spot and wait for feeding fish, or you can move about searching for feeding fish or option three — enjoy a good hot meal out on the ice.

Scott on Sports

Once Upon a Time

O

nce upon a time in the West Branch Valley of the Susquehanna River region, there existed a somewhat utopian atmosphere among the populous. While the village inhabitants of each individual area were fervently pleased and protective of their own, they shared a competitive bond with an overriding uniqueness that made their athletic encounters something they looked forward to and cherished. The commonality was real, and the distance required to travel from village to village was minimal. Indeed, it seemed like the connection they shared would endure the sands of time permitting generation after generation to replicate the experiences of their forefathers as tales of accomplishments were passed down from father to son. But alas, frustrations from the inside, coupled with outside enticements, brought too much pressure to bear and the beloved entity known in its day as the West Branch Conference broke into pieces that not even Humpty Dumpty could put back together again. For today’s high school athletes, and even their parents, the West Branch Conference is nothing more than a fairy tale that existed ‘back in the day.’ But it was both real and beloved. In the middle of the 20th-century, football, Friday nights, and

wintertime gymnasium drama existed among its membership. Comprised of Muncy, Montgomery, Montoursville, Jersey Shore, Bald-Eagle Nittany, South Williamsport, Hughesville High Schools — and in its waning years Loyalsock — the league gave its fans plenty to cheer about and look forward to. But like a decaying floodwall, erosion began to wash away its base and its participants scattered for ‘greener pastures.’ First, it was Muncy and Montgomery that tired of the numbers imbalance between them and the competition. As the years passed, the PIAA playoffs placed a greater divide between ‘the haves and the have nots.’ New athletic alliances sprung up, such as the Mid-Penn and the Central Susquehanna Conference. The old West Branch schools scrambled to find a comfort level. Perhaps adhering to the marketing strategy of some products declaring ‘one size fits all’ the Pennsylvania Heartland Athletic Conference was born in 2008. At its birth, with the nickname PHAC, the coalition was formed among central Pennsylvania high schools that at one time participated in the Schuykill Valley League, the Tri-Valley League, the Susquehanna Valley League, the MidPenn and the West Branch Conference. Similar to the infatuation experienced with a new lover, the PHAC enjoyed an

early ‘honeymoon’ with its 26 dating partners. But as the relationship aged, some members found attractiveness existed outside of its current union, and the temptations proved too attractive to resist. Internal arguments sprung up, seeds of envy Scott were planted, and the Lowery sizing of its product was no longer one that fit all. Some of the smaller schools embarked upon a course to keep the Mid-Penn Conference alive no matter what the size. At one point, a Mid-Penn Conference school official was believed to have told a departing school official, ‘we are going to keep this conference alive, and you’ll be back.’ Bingo! That unnamed official surely qualifies as a 21st century Nostradamus as indeed, the Mid-Penn Conference is back and growing. At this writing, the PHAC will be down to 18 member schools for the 20202021 season with announced plans to operate with two nine-team divisions. Conversely, the smaller school-sized MidPenn is growing and will be comprised of 10 members with South Williamsport, and Northwest added as new teams. The league will be grouped into two fiveteam divisions for both boys’ and girls’ basketball teams. As constituted, the Mid-Penn

West Division will include Bucktail, Montgomery, Muncy. St. John Neumann and South Williamsport. Included in the Mid-Penn East will be Benton, Millville, CMVT, Northwest, and Sullivan County. In basketball, the teams will play each team in their division twice and will face teams in the other division once. A total of 13 league games will be played, permitting each school to schedule nine games of their choice to fill out their 22-game schedule. In wrestling, the Mid-Penn Conference makeup will include Benton, CMVT, Montgomery, Muncy, South Williamsport, Sugar Valley, and Sullivan County. For South Williamsport, the smallest enrollment school in this year’s PHAC, the move is aimed at providing competitive flexibility for its entire athletic program. The school’s football team will compete in the Northern Tier Small School Division, allowing continuing rivalries with neighboring Muncy and Montgomery. With its baseball (Casey Waller) and softball (Tom O’Malley) teams now guided by new coaches, the Mountaineer squads will be embarking upon the upcoming season playing independent schedules. Once upon a time, all fairytales featured a happy ending. Only time will tell if the newly constructed Mid-Penn Conference will enjoy the fan-acceptance and competitiveness of the old West Branch Conference. No doubt, some of the newfound attractiveness could fade with age, but, like the 1950s’ women discovered when struggling with their girdles, ‘one size doesn’t fit all.’
