Who Would’ve Ever Thunk It?

W

hat an amazing week it was in the West Branch Valley. Normally, each happening would result in a cover story; however, with so many great things going on, that just wasn’t possible. I will provide a quick overview of each and be following up with more specifics in the future. I’ll begin with the pending story at press time. Bucknell University’s assistant coach and Lycoming County’s first lady of basketball, Kelly Mazzante, was preparing her squad for Monday’s National Championship game versus UConn. What an unbelievable run by the Lady Bison in the NCAA Tournament. The best part of the story is the possibility Coach Kelly will be taking over the Penn State Lady Lion program next year. The PSU graduate, all-time leading scorer and proven winner seems like a perfect fit. The Nittany Lions are coming off of their worst season in recent program history. Staying with the hoops theme, a quick follow up on last week’s cover story that featured the Loyalsock Lancers and Pennsylvania’s all-time winning basketball coach “CI” – Ron Insinger winning their 1st PIAA State Championship. What an unbelievable final play of the game! Sock trailing Pittsburgh North Catholic 62-61 in Hershey. A full-court alley-oop pass from Aiden Gair to Reis Watkins for a walk-off dunk and celebratory dogpile. Here is what you didn’t know, Pedie

MacDonald, the Lancer’s number one fan, and assistant coach suggested the play to Gair during the team’s last time out. Aiden then told Reis as the two changed the play call, unbeknownst to anyone in the Hershey Park arena. Moving to the diamond. Montoursville senior Logan Ott threw a five-inning nohitter in a season-opening 11-0 win. That’s not surprising; Ott is an absolute beast. What makes Lefty Logan’s accomplishment beyond record worthy is the fact he faced 15 batters, striking them all out on just 45 pitches. Every pitch was a strike. Now that’s a perfect game! Next up, the big news from Mayor Derek Slaughter’s office last week was the approval of a helipad on the top of the Genetti Hotel. The project will allow business folks, government officials, and top entertainers convenient and quick travel access to downtown Williamsport. Energy Aviation near the Williamsport Regional Airport will design and manage the state-of-the-art facility. The company is owned by local business entrepreneur, Mr. Dan Klingerman, who is also the developer of The Liberty Arena complex. Upon speaking with Dan, I was amazed by the social and economic impact this new service will have on our area. This beginning with flight travel for the performers of this summer’s Liberty Arena Beach Party. It will enable performances by Hank Williams

Jr., George Strait, Carrie Underwood, Faith Hill, and Tim McGraw, Luke Bryan, and a special appearance from Toby Keith. This year’s event is a country music celebration of America. Back to the Williamsport Regional Airport. Our Lycoming County Jim C o m m i s s i o n e r s Webb, Jr. announced there will be airline service available to all the major hubs across the United States. This was made possible by American Airlines being replaced by Delta and United Airlines. There will also be a new restaurant and welcome center constructed featuring a Chick-fil-A, Joe’s Crab Shack, and Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse. The idea is to make the Airport Complex a place folks from the region want to visit, not avoid. The shocking news out of Harrisburg last week was the sudden resignation of Governor Tom Wolf to join Senator Bernie Sanders’s presidential scampaign. Candidate Sanders feels Wolf is the perfect person to promote his socialistic ideals and approach to American business and industry. Sounds like a perfect match. Wolf was replaced by former Governor Tom Ridge, who will serve out Wolf ’s current term. I will have a big announcement next week from a Lycoming County resident who will be throwing his hat into the ring to be our state’s next governor.

Lastly, tip of my Columbia fishing hat sporting a rendition of the American Flag and saltwater fish to Jamie Spencer, Wesley LaPoint, and Todd Lomison. The normally bass fishing trio caught a world record 927-pound bull shark. That’s remarkable in its own right, the fact they hooked it where Loyalsock Creek flows into the Susquehanna River makes it beyond unbelievable. Prior to penning this, I did not have a chance to interview Spence, Wes and Todd. I will be assigning the story to Ken Hunter. This is the second time this has occurred in our area. If you remember back in 2004, Ken Hunter landed the first shark ever caught in Pennsylvania. The complete cover story can be found on our website. Bull sharks have become notorious for migrating from oceans into freshwater tributaries; they have the capability of surviving in both. Helmrich’s Seafood will be processing the world record catch. Bob Helmrich reached out to me and let me know the fresh shark filets will be on sale Friday and are perfect for the Lenten season. Helmrich’s has just recently added takeout service (see page 18). It’s available fried, wood-fired, Cajun, and lemon pepper. Jamie, Wes, and Todd will also be donating a portion of the shark meat to the Old Lycoming Township Fire Department for their annual fish fry fundraiser. They recently had the event postponed and could use some extra community support. Great job on sharing your catch of the day, boys! Let’s all be careful out there and take care of each other. he Thursday midnight order the banning sale of adult bicycles ended one of the best bicycle business periods in Williamsport in years in the opinion of one local dealer. One store reported that more bicycles were sold during the last 3 months than at any time in the history of the store. The “freezing” order left Williamsport’s stock of bicycles rather depleted, reports indicate, and sales will not be resumed until a defense worker rationing system is worked out. Heaviest buyers of wheels this year have been middle aged couples who are taking to the

two wheelers for both novelty and necessity while the family car goes into storage because of the rubber tire shortage. Bicycle sales are usually low during January, February and March and do not take an upward trend until near school graduation time. This year, the first quarter sales broke all records as the public turned from automobile to bicycle for transportation. The war production board order does not affect sale of smaller sizes for boys 8-11 years and younger, but if the adults think even the smaller bikes will be okay, they are going to be fooled. Manufacturers have stopped making those sizes and only a few of them are on the market.

COVID-19 Harkens Back to Spanish Flu Pandemic of 1918-19 By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

W

ith the Coronavirus-19, this nation and the world are currently in the throes of the most serious health emergency since the great Spanish Influenza Pandemic of 1918. It might be interesting to look back at that earlier pandemic. According to a Stanford University website, the flu epidemic of 1918 may have had its origins in China “in a rare genetic shift of the influenza virus, a virulent subtype of the N1H1 Swine Flu. The recombination of its surface proteins created a virus novel to

almost everyone and loss of herd immunity.” It got its name the Spanish Influenza because of an early outbreak in Spain that took a large number of lives. The flu epidemic in this country came in two waves, the first coming in the spring of 1918 in Kansas and in military camps throughout the US. Few noticed the epidemic in the midst of the Great War — World War I — 1914-1918. The next and deadliest wave began in September 1918. This was the wave that would victimize the people of this area. In the local newspapers of the time, there was no mention of the epidemic occurring

locally until September 30, 1918. The reports that did appear were wire reports of the epidemic occurring at Army camps and cities throughout the East coast. On that date, a small item noted that a train containing local draftees from Williamsport departing for Fort Thomas for processing might be delayed because of the influenza epidemic. On that same date was a story about a local man, Harry Cohn, who had died of pneumonia at Camp Lee. Pneumonia was basically the end stage of the flu and was what caused most of the deaths during the epidemic. It can be speculated that perhaps the early minimal reportage of the flu epidemic was seen as a war measure meant to not incite any panic that might impede the local war effort

By October 4, 1918, the flu epidemic in Pennsylvania, and locally, had become so serious that state health officials ordered the closure of various public facilities and gatherings. Education once schools opened, to have them inspect all pupils for any signs of flu, including sending students home that had colds until they were better. The Trinity Parish House of Trinity Episcopal Church was used to house children convalescing from the flu or those who had parents who had the flu themselves. The effort at Trinity was praised widely locally but strained the coffers of the church, and a fundraising bazaar was held on November 16 that raised about $1,500. The lifting of the gloom of the influenza epidemic was culminated by the celebration of the armistice ending World War I, on November 11. A great celebratory parade involving thousands of people was held downtown. The people with a sense of relief could well have also been celebrating the seeming passing of the flu peril. Flu cases continued to linger into early 1919 locally and across the east, but the worst was over. Locally, there are no certain statistics of those who had the flu during that awful epidemic, but it estimated that least 2,000 may have had the flu and that several hundred may have died from it. The final toll worldwide for the 1918-1919 flu epidemic is estimated to be at between 20 and 40 million people. An estimated 676,000 of these were Americans. Looking back to 1918 can perhaps give us a lesson to the prudence of taking proper precautions to protect ourselves against the current emergency. It appears that governments at all levels have taken many of the lessons of that previous pandemic to heart and may, in the long run, prevent us from a repeat of that awful time.

Presbyterian Church, suggested on October 5, that all families should hold their own services and have prayers in their own homes. There were some violations in the closing order by several hotels and drinking establishments; several were cited by police for continuing to serve liquor from their premises, including the dispensing of beer and other intoxicants to people who would come in with pitchers and other vessels to be filled. There was also some controversy as to the reports of the number of cases of the flu occurring. At a meeting of the Williamsport Board of Health on October 7, all physicians were directed to report each day the number of new flu cases that came to them for treatment. By October 12, Dr. Clarence Shaw of the local Department of Health claimed that many physicians were underreporting their flu figures. Dr. Charles Youngman reported that there were at least 1,000 flu cases locally and that the number might be somewhat low. The local YWCA started making gauze masks for people to wear to help halt the spread of the flu. They were made in 24 inches by 18-inch settings with tape fastening the four corners of the mask. On October 17, the sale of ice cream and soda as dispensed at refreshment establishments in Williamsport was banned because of the epidemic. By the first week of November, the flu epidemic statewide and locally seemed to be abating. With that in mind, on November 6, the closing order of October 4 was lifted for all public places. Dr. Shaw advised the local Board of

Overcoming Fear There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. I John 4:18 I confess, if perfect love drives out fear, then I still have some growing up to do. s the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved, I have done my best to remain calm. As a husband, dad and pastor, I know that those I lead need to sense from me that everything will be okay. Last Saturday morning I got out of bed early and turned on the news. Out of nowhere, fear began creeping into my

heart. My stomach began to churn and I could feel my blood pressure going up as anxious thoughts began flying through my mind. I spent the next two hours seeking grace through prayer and God’s Word. In time, the fear began to subside as God’s peace settled back into my heart. I share that confession with you to let you know that fear is real and it can attack any one of us. Fear Has a Purpose Actually, fear has a holy design and purpose. Fear engages the Autonomic Nervous System and results in the fight or flight response. The stress hormones, adrenaline

spiritual and relational potential God has invested in us. Fear, left unchecked, is destructive. Fear, like any emotion, must be brought under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Fear can be overcome, and for the believer, it must be overcome. To live in fear is to live in sin, so call it what it is. Don’t justify it or make excuses for it. Today, we must choose to live in love, not in fear. That’s what I had to do last Saturday. To help me overcome my fear, God reminded me of two very important truths: First, You Are Loved. You are a loved child of God (see John 1:12-13). Do you understand the full weight of that statement? Are you living like you understand it? Do your thought processes

reflect it? Be honest with yourself. If you are living in fear, then clearly you don’t understand who you are, or you are just plain unwilling to accept it by faith. Either way, it’s time to receive it and begin living in it. God loves you. You are His child. King David, a man who encountered many fear-inducing situations, made this declaration in Psalm 27:1, “The LORD is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life — of whom shall I be afraid? He also declared in Psalm 118:6, “The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” We would be wise to fully accept God’s love and our full adoption into His family. I Peter 2:9 states, “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.” Are you ready to fully accept this truth and live in it? When you know who you belong to and who loves you, you have nothing to fear. Second, You Are Blessed. Unchecked fear tends to rise out of unmet expectations or entitlements. In other words, we’re afraid of losing something we think we own or deserve. Friends, we don’t own anything (see Luke 12:13-21 and James 4:13-17), not even life itself. And the only thing we deserve, the only thing we have truly earned, is death (see Romans 6:23). When that understanding sets our level of expectation, everything else becomes a bonus.

here are many subplots to this Coronavirus Crisis. One is the continual emergence of the Law of Unintended Consequences. An example of this was Governor Wolf ’s mandate that PennDOT temporarily close its 30 rest areas statewide on March 17 due to coronavirus mitigation efforts. However, this was quickly lifted because those Harrisburg bureaucrats who determined how important this measure was had obviously never been a long-distance hauler. The trucker making the

Would you miss a Sophie Trudeau talk on gender equality and women’s rights as much as you would miss a good plumber when your toilet backs up? For some time now, there is a tradition of recognizing a military veteran by some apparel they are wearing and thanking them for their service. I no longer say that. I prefer to tell a veteran, “Thank you defending our freedom.” I reserve the phrase of thanking for service for the policeman, the EMT, the nursing home worker, and others like them. Yes, the professors at our local colleges serve a valuable purpose, but with all those degrees, they are not as valuable in the present situation as much as electricians,

truck drivers, farmers, garbage collectors, and the folks that stock the shelves and work the cash registers in the local supermarket, convenience or drug stores. We need to thank those who are on the front lines of the disease; the pharmacists, nurses, doctors, and med techs. We need to be willing to help those who are caring for elderly, minors, dependents, persons with disabilities, or other vulnerable persons. I personally know pastors who are working harder than ever right now, contacting their parishioners and coordinating efforts to insure that those who are lonely have someone to talk to, those who are overwhelmed have someone willing to lend a hand, those who are afraid have someone willing to pray for them. And speaking of prayer, remember people like Mayor Derek Slaughter, who has barely

been able to get his administration off the ground then he has had to face the enormous challenge of keeping the city of Williamsport running safe and sound as possible. Remember also Williamsport Police Chief Damon Hagan who was appointed the city’s Director of Public Safety almost as soon as this crisis hit high gear. The same is true for the new Lycoming County Director of Public Safety, Jeffrey Hutchins, who replaced the 30-year veteran John Yingling. Hagan and Hutchins have been thrown into a crisis that is like getting promoted to be a lead officer in charge of landing troops at Normandy on D-Day. Keep that in mind before criticizing or second guessing their decisions and actions. Here is to all the truly essential people. They are our heroes of hope.

The Salvation Army Williamsport Responds to the COVID-19 Pandemic

O

rganization adapts service as situation progresses in order to support our community’s most vulnerable Williamsport, PA (3/26/20) — The Salvation Army of Williamsport continues to feed and assist those in need in the community despite many new challenges due to the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) global pandemic. With shelter-in-place mandates from the Governor of Pennsylvania, the Salvation Army has transitioned its assistance services in order to limit personto-person contact. In complying with local

and state government recommendations and mandates, we are now using our Corps at the Door approach at all of our feeding facilities. The Williamsport Headquarters at 457 Market Street is mitigating the spread of the virus by providing food items in boxes or bags that clients either: a) pick up outside of our facilities, or b) have our workers place into their car trunks while wearing gloves and practicing social distancing. Ensuring the safety of those who depend on The Salvation Army’s programs and services, along with the safety of staff and

volunteers, remains our utmost priority. Our non-critical services are on hold, including: Senior programs, Children’s Activity Programs, men’s and women’s ministries and friendly visitation. Several important fundraisers have been canceled or postponed. “Wide-ranging restrictions to slow the spread of COVID-19 have dwindled our volunteer manpower that we usually rely on to help us during crises, forcing The Salvation Army to make tough decisions regarding our services, as well as how to administer services,” explained Major Donald Spencer of the Williamsport Salvation Army. “We don’t want to put any of our volunteers’ lives in jeopardy. Using our own staff, we will continue providing

the critical necessities of food and other assistance. There is no quarantine for hunger. And there is no quarantine from the love and care of Almighty God. The Salvation Army will stand in the gap, as we’ve done in Williamsport for over 125 years, helping the marginalized no matter how many curve balls the virus throws.” We are an Army of caring individuals who will do all that we can. Fourth, don’t spread negativity, especially a lot of the misinformation floating around on the internet. We need to stay positive and determined to overcome. Use your social circles to support each other and to share uplifting and inspirational stories. We are going to get through this. Fifth, pour out love and compassion, not fear and discrimination. We’re all in this together, so let’s pull together. Stay in touch with your neighbors, especially the elderly and vulnerable. United we stand, divided we fall. And finally, wash your hands – again and again and again. It’s tedious and time consuming, but absolutely essential. Education is essential to staying healthy. Let’s all do our part. Sacrificing together, we can beat this. And yes, we all need to sacrifice. Pulling together is the key, so pull hard.

ast week, I reached out to people I know who are working and serving faithfully in the midst of the pandemic. My desire was to gain a local perspective of how Covid-19 is affecting people in our valley so I could share their stories. The national news outlets have an important role to play, but nothing can replace local voices. These are people we know, people in our community. My prayer is that by hearing their voices, we can gain a better understanding of the difficulties they are facing every day — and what we can do to make a difference. I spoke with a local Physician Assistant. I asked her to summarize her initial thoughts. The first thing she said was this, “There’s a lot of love out there — but there’s also a lot of fear.” On the love side, she described a patient who made six masks for her to wear at work. She said a friend from her church made her two masks and then mailed them to her home. That’s good stuff. But on the fear side, she described some painful discrimination that is happening. Some people don’t want to associate with medical professionals or their families. Some don’t even want to shop in the same grocery stores. It is a level of rejection that is hard to swallow at a time when medical professionals are making so many sacrifices. I also spoke with a Nurse Anesthetist. Being a specialist who works specifically with people’s airways, he is preparing to serve in the danger zone of the pandemic. He described tensions being pretty high at work, “If you sat in on our meetings, you would realize that this is a big

deal.” Staff are trying to anticipate worst-case scenarios, and as they do, anxiety builds and tempers flare. There is an extra layer of tension that has everyone edgy. Managing fear and anxiety has become a new daily discipline – and he is avoiding negative conversations. I asked both of them to describe how they are protecting their families as they face the possibility of Covid-19 exposure at work. Their answers were very similar. Here’s a summary of the decontamination routine they follow every day: First, remove shoes. Work shoes do not go in the house. Second, go to an isolated area and change clothes. Third, the clothes go immediately into the wash machine. Fourth, all non-washable items like cellphones, watches, rings, and hair clips are sanitized. Finally, it’s into the shower and then fresh clothes. It’s a meticulous and time-consuming process designed to protect their loved ones from exposure. Even with all that effort, some medical professionals are social distancing from their spouses and children. It is one of the hard realities that comes with serving on the front lines. It’s a tough way to live, but they are committed to serving in their essential roles, regardless of the sacrifices they must make and the discrimination they must endure. Both of my friends recognized that there are a lot of other people serving in essential roles: truck drivers, grocery workers, prison guards, police officers, first responders, sanitation workers — frankly, the list is long. These incredible people are also making sacrifices and taking risks to keep us safe and strong. We need to remember them too — and express our deep appreciation for the work they are doing. I couldn’t agree more.

I asked both of them to share with our readers what we can do to make a difference. Here’s a summary of their responses: First, pray that God would give health care professionals and all essential workers sanity, safety and endurance. The pressures at work and home have increased exponentially — and that new reality is going to last for quite some time. Please pray. Second, stay home. It’s the sacrifice we can all make as we try to flatten the curve. Everyone must do all they can to stay healthy. This will allow the healthcare system to operate without being overwhelmed. Third, protect your immune system. Eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water, get enough sleep, exercise regularly, break destructive habits, avoid stress. Your best defense is a strong immune system, so do all you can to strengthen it.

he Lycoming County Commissioners did not meet the week of March 22nd, but this does not mean that county government has come to a standstill. Normally, I receive a press release from the county perhaps once or twice a month but in March they have been coming in at two or three a week. Some of this may be a bit dated by publication time, but unless any different information has been forthcoming, these same restrictions will undoubtedly stay in force. It is hard to summarize all this, but I will do my best:

health reviews, emergency equity civil matters, any pleading or motion relating to public health concerns and involving immediate and irreparable harm, and (the wiggle room clause) any other function deemed by a President Judge to be essential consistent with constitutional requirements. Per those directives, Lycoming County President Judge Butts has directed that preliminary hearings, arraignments, guilty pleas, and sentencing for incarcerated defendants will be held via video conference. Questions relating to all these matters as well as specifics relating to magisterial district courts can be found on the county government website: lyco.org Recycling — the Lycoming County Resource Management Services is suspending its recycling program until April 1st, and possibly longer depending on how the situation develops.

Recycling boxes are locked or removed and leaving any material at the site is considered illegal dumping. In addition, Director Jason Yorks emphasizes that all garbage should be discarded in bags and not place loosely. Gov. Wolf ’s Business Closings — On Saturday, March 21st, Governor Tom Wolf issued an order for all “non-life-sustaining businesses” in the Commonwealth to close their physical locations. What is considered ‘essential’ deserves an entire feature by itself, which can be found in my LION (Leaders in our Neighborhood) article in this issue. For the most part, these are common sense. For example, farming related to crop and animal production are okay but any kind of forestry is not. Food manufacturing is good, but any kind of textile or apparel manufacturings is not. Paper manufacturing is necessary, (have to keep that toilet paper rolling), but

apparently wood product manufacturing is not. Construction of buildings is on hold, but not manufacturing related on heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning equipment. On hold are also construction on buildings, highways, and bridges. Curiously, electrical component and semiconductor manufacturing is considered life-sustaining, but the actual construction of the products these would be used in is not. (With the one exception being medical equipment and supplies manufacturing, thank goodness!) It would seem that the coronavirus is an Equal Opportunity Destroyer, creating an environment where nothing is untouched. As awful as all these disruptions are, suffering through a horrible disease and possibly death is obviously much worse. So, buckle up for a rocky ride, but be assured, we will get to the end of this sooner or later.

and play together. Hey, at least I’m good at teaching home economics. Plus, we have been doing game nights! The game of LIFE is a great game to teach money, and the game of WAR taught our daughter which number is higher with cards. You can do so much learning at home even without the schoolwork. Tyler is amazing with Legos. His brain is wired mechanically and engineering. I’m not talking about little Legos. At six years old this kid was building a Technic Lego Crane of 2,606 pieces meant for 11-16-year-olds to build it. He has collected and built so many over the years that we had shelves made all around his room he could display them on. Last year he wanted the Technic Lego Bugatti. This thing was over $400! We told him he needed to save up for it. He saved most of it and we helped pay for the rest, but he finally got it last month. This thing has almost 4,000 pieces and was meant for the ages 16 and up. He had it all put together with no help in less than 12 hours at 10 years old. His mother couldn’t do five pages in a day! These two very thick instruction books would stress me out. Needless to say this car is so big that it won’t fit on his shelves, but we were just so proud of him. Lego’s can keep any kid busy designing something for hours! So, yeah, kids are all home and we can’t go anywhere, but there is still plenty to keep them busy and enjoy making memories during this time. They loved making

playdough and the cookie recipe from last week’s column. Fifteen years from now we want our kids to remember this time we all went through, and some of the good that came out of it. Time together. Homemade Play Dough • 1 cup flour • 1 cup water • 1/3 cup salt • 1 tbsp oil • 2 tsp cream of tartar (if you don’t have this, it’s ok!) • Gel Food Coloring (I used neon colors) Put everything into a saucepan till a ball forms on low heat. When ball forms, add coloring with gel food coloring. You will have to use your hands to really mix but the coloring came off our hands the same day. Mix until colored through. Keep in an airtight container.

Our 1st priority is the health of our citizens. The sooner that everyone takes the measures and precautions recommended by the health officials the sooner we can recover from the havoc that the virus has left in its path. Remember our forefathers have overcome many similar and even worse challenges. We can do the same but remaining unified. Take care of each other, check on our neighbor or an elderly friend. At the County press conference held on March 18, 2020 I quoted Scripture from the Holy Bible. Joshua 1:9-“Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” There are many things in life that are much bigger than us. This is one of them. he Corona virus has left its devastation and DNA on the world and society. The invisible terrorist named COVID-19 has grasped the world and turned it upside down. The normal lives we had are on hold. It resembles watching a Twilight Zone episode and waiting for Rod Sterling to say, “You have entered a fifth dimension.” We are navigating through unchartered waters together. We currently have one case in Lycoming County but as testing becomes more available that number may very well climb. There is a great deal we do not know about this virus. That is ok because what we do know is that we live in a community where love is witnessed every day. Restaurants are feeding kids who are not in school. Doctors, nurses, EMS, Grocery store associates and many professionals on the frontline working in potentially dangerous conditions. There are so many examples to be shared. We do know that our employment is our livelihood, but our faith, family and friends are our life. During this time please take a moment and spend this precious time we call life with your loved ones. Many of our businesses due to no fault of their own were directed to close their doors. We pray and love each of them. Once this crisis is over, I would encourage each of you to visit and conduct your business with them. Let them know we need them and how thankful we are they are in our communities. Billy Donovan, the current coach of the NBA Oklahoma City Thunder, spent 19 years at the University of Florida where he led the Gators to back-to-back NCAA championships in 2006 & 2007 and is the University’s all-time winning basketball coach. Following the team’s 2006 NCAA title Donovan gave the University of Florida basketball players and fans a moment they will likely never forget. Returning to the Florida campus the team was hosted at a giant rally. Coach Donovan held the trophy as high as he could as fans and students wildly cheered. Suddenly, everything goes wrong as the trophy falls from Donovan’s hands and is shattered on the ground. Everyone is stunned until Donovan announces it was just a prank. He then gestured everyone to look at a screen behind him which showed the actual trophy safe and enclosed in a glass case. For most of us sports have provided many good time opportunities over the years and they will again once a winning game plan can be developed over our current quandary. Hopefully, some of you will be able to enjoy some humor on this most different kind of an April Fool’s Day.

Mets Fans Hopes Dashed As Spring Training was ending and the season approaching the hopes of New York Mets fans were heightened by a Sports Illustrated story about pitching prospect Hayden ‘Sidd’ Finch. Finch was reported to be a pitcher in the Mets minor league system. The story detailed the boy’s life, how he learned to pitch and his decision to pursue a career in baseball or music. It was reported he boasted a 168 MPH fastball but had a bit of an unorthodox style to his game. But all the Mets fans cared about was that he had huge potential. Unfortunately for Mets fans, Finch

Fishing During the COVID-19 Outbreak

T

he Commonwealth of PA is now on a temporary lockdown. Well that’s unless you are out buying beer, gathering ammo or playing the daily lottery. There is much debate on how this was actually determined. Governor Tom is faced with a very difficult situation. But what’s considered essential or life sustaining? The Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission have made some updates to their schedules. The Mentor Youth Trout Day is now on April 11, and the statewide Opening Day of Trout season will take place on April 18.These changes are in response to the CDC and the Pennsylvania Department of Health hoping reduce the number of anglers traveling from the areas already heavily affected by COVID-19. To ensure public safety, volunteers will NOT be permitted to assist with any stocking activities. Many PFBC staff are being reassigned to assist with stocking fish into lakes and streams. In some cases, pre-season and in-season allocations of trout will be combined into single events to increase the ef-

ficiency of stocking trips. Obviously, these new schedules will be updated and reassessed on a week to week basis. Kudos to the PFBC for doing the right thing. Thousands of anglers from all over the Commonwealth will flock to our region once Jamie Spencer again. They are looking for an opportunity to catch the millions of stocked fish. Yes. It’s a scary time of year and I am still on the fence about sneaking out. I don’t do well fishing in front of large crowds. Practice your social distancing folks. I’ve mentioned to you before that I am one of North Central PAs biggest fans. Seriously. What’s not to love about the 570? This place is just splendid, and this beautiful area is the perfect backdrop for an outdoor enthusiast like me. Lycoming County provides hundreds of exceptional fishing opportunities. We are so blessed with several different types of water to target all kinds of species. I am still waiting on a call from the Visitors Bureau. Seriously guys. I believe I can help.
