Some you might be available to take Happy Easter to you and your family. Make advantage of right now; some may have sure to share the special meaning of the day to wait. The list of who can and who can’t

No matter what is needed around your house, please buy and contract local and support those that make a living the oldfashioned way, with their hands and hard work. From flowers to furnaces, painting to pools, carpet to complete construction, our area is blessed with great folks that want to do a great job for you! One thing we are all learning through this crisis is the importance of having things to do right at home. As you’re thinking about your next home improvement project, maybe it’s time to think recreation and relaxation; we all could use a little of both right now. Maybe it’s a little paving or concrete for a basketball hoop or an area for the kiddos

to play. There’s always the option for a new pool, which can double as a great way to give the dogs a bath. How about clearing or reclaiming some of your land that may be overgrown? That’s a great way to have a place to play catch, plant a garden, or put in that pool. As for interior living space, maybe adding a sunroom will brighten your day. The conversion of unused space to a family game room is always a great idea. Next on my list is getting rid of the old tub with a walk-in shower. With all of us eating more meals at home, maybe it’s revealed the necessity for a kitchen makeover. This can definitely be a stress reliever, especially for the cook. And there’s always that idea about a workout room complete with bar and 95” HDTV. The choice is yours. When it comes to finding reliable people, I am a member and a big believer in the West Branch Susquehanna Builders Association. They do a great job and are committed to our local communities. The organization is dedicated to ensuring the highest standard of service and conduct amongst its members as possible. With the cancellation of this year’s annual Home Show, our area missed out on the meet and greet of all that is home improvement. Many of these businesses can be found within this week’s paper. I will be doing something in the near future when the coast is clear to help promote the WBSBA. Remember, your home improvement is only as good as the person you hire or buy from! Let’s do everything to be safe, be healthy, and help one another. God Bless America.

Happy Easter!

H

appy Easter everyone! I hope that you are keeping safe, healthy and home! I know this is going to be a different kind of Easter this year, but I’m hoping to help everyone out with some fun athome Easter activities that will keep kids entertained and feeling the Easter spirit. You can’t go out to an Easter Egg Hunt, but there is still plenty that can be done right in your own home and backyard. Also, I know a lot of you will be missing your Easter church services, but I encourage you to look online for services you and your family can watch, or just take the time to worship with your family in whatever way suits you! So, let’s get on with what kind of Easter fun could be on the agenda for your family this year! Egg and Spoon Race Try this good old-fashioned outdoor game! Egg and spoon races date back to the late 1800s. All you need are eggs (hardboiled are the least messy) and metal or wooden spoons for each participant. Race individually or relay-style. Jellybean Guessing Games Here’s an easy indoor game for all ages! Simply fill a jar with jellybeans and ask each family member to guess how many candies there are. Winner (the closest without going over) takes all! Another

jellybean-themed game involves asking players to guess the correct flavor of fancy jelly beans they taste. Plant Flowers Easter symbolizes Steph rebirth, so what better Nordstrom day to plant some tulips or daffodils with your budding gardener? Fall is technically the season to plant bulbs in most regions, but you can plant them indoors any time of year or buy flowers already in bloom and transplant them outdoors on Easter. Decorate an Easter Egg Tree Here’s the perfect activity for kids experiencing Christmas tree withdrawal! Decorate a tree (indoors or outside, depending on the weather) with plastic Easter eggs and any other spring decor (such as pastel ribbons or tissue paper flowers) for your holiday. Do a simple Easter Craft Here are the directions to make some bunny ears! Because what kid wouldn’t want to be the Easter bunny for a day? Materials: • Construction paper in white and pink • Scissors • Glue • Stapler

Directions: Use white and pink construction paper to cut out bunny-ear shapes: two white and two pink, the pink being slightly smaller. Glue the pink ears onto the white ears. Glue the ears onto a long strip of construction paper, measure to fit your child’s head, and staple the ends together to form a headband. Plant a Candy Garden Inside in a pot, or outside in the yard, let your child ‘plant’ jellybeans, then when they head to bed, replace the jellybeans with lollipops that ‘grew’ over night! I know this won’t be a traditional Easter, but it’s important to try to have some fun and enjoy the holiday! I also hope that you enjoy our nontraditional Home Improvement issue! With everything happening in the World, we decided to dedicate the whole issue to those businesses that keep our homes in working order. As soon as we are in the Corona-Clear, we will be doing our traditional Spring Home Improvement special section. In the meantime, look through this issue and utilize the businesses throughout! You may not be able to get some things done right now, but I’m sure that the advertisers in this issue will be happy to work with you in scheduling work in the (hopefully) near future! As always, please be safe out there! Wash your hands, stay home if you can, be safe, and stay healthy!

Remembering Easter 1943 By Lou Hunsinger, Jr.

P

resident Trump has likened the present Coronavirus pandemic crisis to being in a wartime situation and at times it feels like that. It might be good to look back and remember another Eastertide that took place in a real wartime situation. Easter 77 years ago was in many ways typical, but it was not in one important way. We were a nation locked in mortal combat with three ruthless foes, Nazi Germany, fascist Italy and Imperial Japan. It was a year in which Franklin Roosevelt was in his 10th year as President of the United States, a gallon of gas cost 15 cents. The average cost of a new house was $3,600. The average worker earned $2,000. The average cost of a new car was $900 and a bottle of Coca Cola cost five cents. Other notable happenings from that year included the completion of the massive Pentagon building, Economists declared the Great Depression over as a result of employment produced by meeting wartime defense needs. A side consequence was the ending of the Works Progress Administration, which provided thousands of jobs for the unemployed. Many consumer products were rationed due to wartime needs from sugar to rubber to gasoline. In wartime news, the Russian Red Army was starting to push back the Nazi armies

from their homeland. The American island-hopping strategy was in full strength and in North Africa, Allied armies were throwing back and defeating Rommel’s vaunted Africa Korps and the Eighth Air Force’s strategic bombing campaign against Germany was in full swing. Locally, the colorful Leo Williamson was re-elected Mayor of Williamsport and at that Easter season, The Williamsport Ministerial Association’s Good Friday Service held at Pine Street Methodist Church was attended by capacity crowds. Shoppers thronged downtown stores during the week leading to Easter buying their Easter finery and various Easter related items. Easter lilies were in short supply and were replaced by various other types of spring flowers. Because of sugar rationing, Easter candy was scarce that year in the words of Grit, “chocolate eggs were as scarce as museum pieces.” Jellybeans were also in short supply. Almost all candy stores were sold out of chocolate candy early in the week. Meat rationing made it difficult for companies and businesses that traditionally presented their employees with an Easter ham or a slab of bacon, found it difficult to do so. Various types of clothing items and shoes were also subject to rationing and regulations and some were in short supply. The planting of Victory Gardens was in full swing in the greater Williamsport area at Easter time 1943.

The annual Easter sunrise service that was normally held at the Grampian Hills Cross was moved to Brandon Park due to wartime conditions. That was also the case in 1942. The Williamsport Council on Christian Education issued an invitation for members of the military police unit stationed at the Penn Street Armory and the aviation cadets training at the Dickinson Junior College to attend the service. Interestingly, Easter was observed on April 25 that year, the latest date it was celebrated during the 20th century. It is scheduled to be observed that late again in 2038. The day after Easter the “Gazette and Bulletin” reported that city churches were filled for Easter services. The weather was overcast and chilly in the morning but the sun came out in the afternoon. It was warm enough for people displaying their Easter finery to discard their overcoats. Being a war year there were many uniforms present at Easter services and other gatherings. More than 700 persons attended the outdoor service at the Brandon Park. Bandshell. There were no benches there and those attending stood during the 35-minute services. The request for complete silence during the service and upon entrance to the park was cheerfully complied with. We at Webb Weekly hope you enjoyed this glimpse into an Eastertide past and that it shows that we as a nation have overcome great adversity and obstacles and can do so again.

Appeals were being made to have local citizens to do their patriotic duty by buying war bonds during the 2nd War Loan Drive. Recent heavy rain and melting snows raised the depth of the Susquehanna River to 19 feet, causing some low-level flooding in some areas. The 1943 baseball season opened Easter week with Brooklyn, Cincinnati and Chicago the early leaders in the National League and New York, Cleveland and St. Louis were the early leaders in the American League. For the first time since the founding of the New YorkPennsylvania League, later the Eastern League, Williamsport did not have an entry in the league due to wartime conditions. It left an aching void for the local baseball fans. At local movie houses, Walt Disney’s “Bambi” was at the Park Theater. The Karlton had a double feature consisting of “Invisible Agent” starring Jon Hall and Jack Benny in “Buck Benny Rides Again.” “Henry Aldrich Gets Glamour,” starring Jimmy Lydon was playing at the Keystone. At the Capitol Theater was “Reap the Wild Wind,” starring John Wayne, Paulette Goddard and Ray Milland and there would be a special midnight matinee Easter night, featuring “Hello Frisco Hello,” starring Alice Faye, John Payne and Jack Oakie. The Rialto had “Slightly Dangerous” starring Lana Turner and Robert Young. On Easter Eve, Saturday, April 24, the “Gazette and Bulletin” had an editorial titled, “Easter’s Prophetic Meaning: Victory!”

ll active cases on Lycoming County’s direct relief rolls are being re-investigated as part of a statewide effort to place more people in jobs; it was disclosed last night by Herbert H. Ertel, executive director. Started on a small scale about six weeks ago, the check to definitely re-establish eligibility for public assistance did not get fully underway until early this month. It will be completed in about a month, Mr. Ertel predicted. Although the caseload is regularly checked on average of every month, the current investigation is more thorough and is expected to eliminate many ineligibles. According to W.E. Solenberger,

state research statistician. “This is the season when employment generally picks up, and more jobs are available. The re-investigation is to see that every person who has a chance takes a job.” As each case is checked, Mr. Ertel revealed, 21 years of age and older who participate in the grant are required to sign the new $6,000 liability bond, which replaces the $500 bond required so the state could regain relief money illegally or by fraud. All new applicants for assistance also must sign the bond. A series of amendments changing the new bond by eliminating the controversial phases is now before the state legislature.

the sod to fit the bare area and place on the amended soil. • The Scotts company says to lightly water newly seeded or sodded areas daily for at least two weeks to keep the top inch of soil consistently moist but not soggy. Gradually water more as the seedlings develop and the grass begins to fill in. Deep water at least once or twice a week after the new grass reaches mowing height. • The grass should grow slightly longer than the rest of the lawn, and wait until the color of the patched area begins to blend in with the rest of the lawn before mowing. This could take a few weeks, and the area should be avoided until then. Eventually, and with treatment, bare spots can be remedied and become indistinguishable from other areas of the lawn.

aring for a lawn to keep it lush and green can require equal measures of patience and hard work. Various invaders can attack grass or contribute to its demise. One problem many homeowners face is bare spots. Bare spots can occur for various reasons. Heavy foot traffic, grubs or other pests, fungi, pet urine, or too much or too little water can contribute to bare spots. The howto resource The Spruce says that correcting the source of bare spots can prevent new issues, particularly if grubs or other pests are damaging the grass. Then homeowners can address existing bare areas. It is unlikely that bare spots will just fill back in on their own. Reseeding spots or using sod to fill in bare areas can help lawns look lush. • Begin by raking and removing any dead grass and other debris from the lawn. Check to make sure that grubs or insects are not attacking the lawn. If they are, use targeted treatment options for those pests. • Break up and aerate any soil that is compacted in the bare spot. • Amend the soil in the bare area with loamy soil or compost to improve on the nutritional makeup and texture so that it is amenable to grass-growing. If you notice that the entire lawn is looking a little sparse, top-dressing the rest of the lawn at this point also can help improve its vitality. • Sprinkle seeds in the bare spot (disperse seeds over the rest of the lawn if you want to over-seed and improve the thickness of the lawn). If you prefer sod, cut a portion of

etween spring cleaning and spending additional time outdoors (or both), the spring season can bring a lot of changes to your home. From insect prevention to rethinking home organization and adding style to your favorite spaces, it’s an opportunity to reimagine your living areas while planning ahead for potential problems. Combat Carpenter Bees with Early Prevention Don’t let carpenter bees get a foothold in your home where they can damage wood. One of the easiest ways to prevent carpenter bees from boring into your house is to capture them before they begin multiplying. Traps, like the TrapStik from Rescue!, lure in carpenter bees with appealing colors and patterns then trap them on a sticky surface. Just hang the weather-resistant, pesticidefree traps where carpenter bees are seen or holes can be found. Learn more at rescue. com/rescueyourhome. ardening is beneficial in various ways. The AARP states that some of the health perks associated with gardening include improved mood, increased vitamin D levels (which benefits bones and immune system) and reduced risk of dementia. In addition, if gardening efforts include growing herbs, fruits and vegetables, it can be a cost-effective way to eat healthy. For gardeners without sufficient space or for those with mobility issues, container gardening can be an ideal way to grow everything from flowers to vegetables. Better Homes & Gardens says most plants are not fussy about the containers in which they grow so long as some of their basic needs are met. This means watering correctly for the type of plant, and ensuring sufficient drainage. The following are some other ways container gardening efforts can prove successful. • Watch water. Planet Natural Research Center says plants with thin leaves typically need ample water, and plants with thick leaves need less. Use this as a guideline to gauge water needs. • Size correctly. Plants should be sized to the container. Consider dwarf varieties of certain plants if your containers are small. • Choose the right soil. Fill containers with a commercial potting soil rather than soil from the garden. Garden soil can dry into a solid mass, while commercial mixtures have amendments like peat moss, vermiculite, compost, and other ingredients to help with soil texture and moisture retention. • Mix it up. When planting containers of flowers and other greenery, Good Housekeeping says to include “a thriller, a spiller and a filler” as a good rule of thumb. The thriller is the focal point, the

spiller a trailing plant, and a filler has smaller leaves or flowers to add bulk and color. • Poke holes. Drainage holes are essential so that soil will not become waterlogged. Holes don’t need to be large, but there should be enough of them so that excess water can drain out readily. • Select the right container material. Container materials may be affected by gardeners’ budgets, personal taste and other factors. For those who live in hot climates, selecting a light-colored container can help prevent further soil heat absorption. Container gardening is a healthy and enjoyable activity that can pay dividends in various ways.

he Lycoming County Commissioners took a week off from their regular meetings, but have been in continual contact with key county leaders as well as state and federal officials. I personally realized how dedicated our county employees are during this crisis when I received an answer to an email from the commissioner’s administrative manager, Eileen Ebner, time stamped 1:30 p.m. on Sunday (!), March 29th. These folks are working harder than ever and going the second (and probably third and fourth) mile. The meeting held on Tuesday, March 30th was quite unusual in that there were only ten county representatives; Commissioners Metzger and Mussare (Rick Mirabito was on speaker), Eileen mentioned above, Matt McDermott, Director of Administration, Sheriff Lusk, one of his deputies, three department heads, and a tech handling the livestream. I was the one and only representative of the “public.” There were at least a dozen officials who used speakerphone to interact with the commissioners, and the technical challenges, as well as the lengthy agenda, made for a very, very

long meeting. However, in a strange way, it was reassuring in the sense that much of the business was routine. Even in the midst of this crisis, the county is still maintaining and improving its services in the voting process, housing for homeless, early learning for children, etc. Obviously, the most important aspect of the meeting was Jeffrey Hutchins, the new Director of Public Safety, who noted that emergency services were all responding well. And now it is the residents of Lycoming County to do their turn to respond. Every ten years, a census is conducted as mandated in the U.S. Constitution. In the past, the census was sent by mail and then followed up by census takers to visit those who did not respond to the mail census. Unfortunately, Lycoming County did not fare well in 2010, with almost 24 percent failing to respond by mail as compared to 14 percent of the neighboring counties. Every single person should be concerned about getting the count right because those numbers will shape how political power and federal tax dollars are shared in the United States over the next ten years. The number of congressional seats and Electoral College votes each state gets are determined by census numbers. They also guide how the billions of dollars in federal funding is distributed for

schools, roads, and other public services in local communities. The importance of ensuring an accurate count cannot be overemphasized. For every person that is missed, it would cost the county $2000 in missed federal revenue. The 2010 census in Bradford County missed 4000 people, a net $8 million loss per year, a cumulative $80 million over the decade till this new census when it can be corrected. The best news is how easy it is to complete the census. This one is vastly different than the last two that preceded it. The 2000 census was long and invasive, with over 100 questions and taking 90 minutes to complete. That was dialed back considerably in the 2010 census to a 25-question survey, but this year’s census has just nine questions. It takes less time to complete than it takes to boil water for cooking spaghetti. It is super simple, private, safe, and secure. Best of all, it is not at all invasive. There are no questions like how many toilets you have in your house, how much fire insurance you carry, or what transportation you use to get to work. For those who have received the census form in the mail, it includes a unique ID that is used for logging into the census website: my20202census.gov. This will then lead into the 9-question survey, and upon completion, a confirmation code number will be given. This ensures that the household will be eliminated from any future one-to-one contact in relation to the 2020 census. If you misplaced your

xterior renovations can enhance the appearance of a property and make it more enjoyable for homeowners. Certain renovations have the potential to add value to a home, while others may do the opposite. Learning which ones have the largest return on investment can help homeowners select features that will have the most positive impact. Curb appeal goes a long way toward attracting potential buyers. According to the National Association of Realtors, first impressions of a property have a strong influence on buyers. Landscaping and external features can do much to influence such impressions. • Lawn care program: Investing in a lawn care program that consists of fertilizer and weed control application and can be transferred over to a subsequent home owner is an attractive feature. NAR says such a care program can recover $1,000 in value of the $330 average cost, or a 303 percent ROI. • Low-maintenance lifestyle: When choosing materials for projects, those that offer low-maintenance benefits can be preferential. These include lowmaintenance patio materials, composite decking, vinyl fencing, and inorganic mulched beds. • Fire pit: A fire pit can be used for much of the year. In the spring and summer, the firepit is a great place to congregate to roast marshmallows or sip wine and

gaze into the fire. In the fall, the fire pit can make for a cozy retreat. A fire pit that has a gas burner is low-maintenance, and the National Association of Landscape Professionals says that most can recoup about $4,000 of their $6,000 average price tag. • Softscaping: Hardscaping refers to structures like outdoor kitchens or decks. Softscaping involves the living elements of the landscape. Hiring a landscape designer to install trees, shrubs, natural edging, and rock elements can do wonders toward improving the look and value of a home. • Pool or water feature: In certain markets, particularly hot climates, a pool or another water feature is a must-have. However, in other areas where outdoor time is limited, a pool or water feature can actually lower the value of a home. He is saying the same to us. It’s an Easter just like the first one. Thomas didn’t believe. He chose to be skeptical even though all of his friends were trying to convince him that Jesus was alive. Do you have doubts? My friend, you are not alone. Many of us started out as skeptics, just like Thomas. If you’re struggling with doubt, Jesus is declaring to you today, “Don’t be faithless any longer. Believe!” His Spirit and His grace are ready to meet you. He is with you right now and ready to restore you to eternal life. Don’t be faithless any longer. Trust Him and He will do it! It’s an Easter just like the first one. One last thought. Did you know that Jesus talked about you when He was talking with Thomas? Jesus said, “Blessed are those who believe without seeing me.” In that phrase, He is talking about you and me. We have believed without seeing the proof that Thomas was given. And for that bold faith, Jesus declares that we are blessed — and that blessing rests on us even in the midst of a pandemic. Receive it and walk boldly in that blessing. He will give you a peace that passes all understanding. It is a peace the world can’t give, and a peace it cannot take away. See Philippians 4:7 and John 14:27. Friends, we’re about to celebrate an Easter just like the first one. Be filled with joy! Don’t let this incredible opportunity escape your notice just because you can’t go to a church and do the usual things. Remember, you are the Church! Jesus is already with you! He has set you free! You are the royal priesthood! He is risen! He is risen, indeed! Let’s make this Easter the most amazing moment the world has ever experienced — just like the first one!

19 • Webb Weekly April 8, 2020

Day of Atonement. Two amazing changes are represented by the tearing of the curtain. First, the royal priesthood of all believers was established. See I Peter 2:9. Every believer, through Jesus Christ, would be able to enter into the holy presence of God and serve as the mediators of the New Covenant. And second, the presence of God would no longer be contained within the Holy of Holies. Instead, God would live in the house of His choosing — and you are that house! See I Corinthians 3:16. Can you picture God tearing that curtain from top to bottom so that His Spirit could rush out of the temple and commune with His people? What an extraordinary moment! Friends, we are going to celebrate Easter at home, but be assured, Jesus is going to meet with us! He doesn’t live in a church building and He’s not held captive in a sanctuary. No my friends, He is with us! And He will be in every home with every believer! Even locked doors will not keep Him from meeting with you. It’s going to be an Easter just like the first one. The disciples were afraid on the first Easter — and many of us are too. The threat we are facing may be different, but the fear is just the same. In the midst of the pandemic Jesus is saying, “Peace be with you!” The world has been turned upside down and the future seems terribly uncertain. Jesus knows that what we’re facing is real — and that is the very reason He is reassuring us with His peace. Can you hear Him? Do you trust Him? After visiting the empty grave, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary “hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy.” To them Jesus said, “Do not be afraid.”

This Week’s LION: Hope from Israel By Larry Stout

T

here is a saying that misery loves company, and if that statement is true, there must be a lot of love going around these days. It has been estimated that one-third of the world is in some form of isolation due to the COVID-19 virus. I was curious how some of these folks are coping as we are here in the United States. With friends in many parts of the world, I touched base to ask how they were doing. Not surprisingly, the majority are going through much the same as we are — staying at home, watching and waiting, uncertain as we are here in the States. But the one person whose response truly inspired me came from Israel. When most folks think of Israel, they either focus on the sites associated with the Holy Land, or the never-ceasing Arab-Israeli conflicts. But there is a side of Israel that very few know about, and that is its commercial success. Here is a country of seven million people that has been in an almost constant state of war since its founding in 1949, with no natural resources to speak of, yet has an advanced economy

with a well-skilled workforce, a highly developed infrastructure, and a hightechnology sector competitively on par with Silicon Valley. Their secret (which is no secret) is that they use their adversity as an impetus to ingenuity. For example, they cannot maintain a large standing army given their small size, so they integrated mandatory military conscription for both males and females that provides for defense, but also serves as a healthy deterrent to crime. (Not a great idea to break into a home with residents who are packing Uzis in their clothes closets). It is also not coincidental that in a country that has won multiple Nobel prizes in chemistry is also at the forefront of the research for tests and vaccines for COVID-19. Dr. Andreas Kelling is a colleague

pizza shop owners sit, wait and hope for customers that would come. On Friday, we were only allowed to leave after 5 p.m., and then were not to go farther than 300 feet from our home. The schools closed a week ago. For two days, the teachers provided distance education, then they called a vacation for a couple of days, and then all of a sudden online school started again.” At this point, this certainly sounds a lot like Lycoming County. Yet, here is where the spirit of Israel kicks in. After a crazy week of on-again, off-again schooling for the kids and the business shutdown,

Andreas and his wife Angelina took a walk — and suddenly had a different outlook: “Even though the news is not great, we are hopeful. On Sunday, when we were allowed to move around a bit again, Angelina and I discovered this tree in the picture. Look at how rotten and dead it is. It is the victim of a forest fire that went over Mount Carmel a few years ago. Yet, lo and behold, if you look closely, you will discover some fresh greens in the middle of the tree. Life, coming out of something that looks dead. This is how we look at the

situation. It might be depressing for the time being, but God is good. He will not let us down. We decided to look for the opportunities in this crisis and rejoice the Lord is in the midst of it.” Yes, the day will come when we are looking at the COVID-19 Crisis in our rearview mirror, but right now, we can be fortified with hope. We may wonder how our economy and society are going to rebound after all this inactivity and distress, but just as a tree that appears dead still has life, so we will find our way to bounce back. In the words of Alexander Pope, hope springs eternal.

of mine who emigrated to Israel some twenty years ago, where he lives in the city of Haifa with his wife and three children. He wrote to me, “Dear Larry, it is unreal. The country has come to a standstill. No loud voices on the streets, people are at home. Normally, you hear a joyful sound on the streets and parks, but now it is all silent. I went out for a walk on Thursday (March 26th). During that one hour, I met three or four people, where normally I would see hundreds. Restaurants closed last week; now, only pizza places are still open. But since there is no one on the street, the

HOME COOKIN courses. I make meat, starch, veggie and fruit. It’s called balance. :) * If you can’t or don’t want to do take-out, I bought stuff to make homemade pizzas. That is such a great idea for the weekends. You can also get fresh rolls from a local bakery, head over to Diamond Square in Newberry for some lunch meat and make your own hoagies. Make it easy on yourself. No one wants to be in the kitchen night after night, and this is coming from someone who loves to cook! On beautiful Saturdays, I want to be outside with my family, and know dinner is easy so I can be out longer and just enjoying the day. I hope these menus will help you out in your days to come. Be safe out there.

Chicken Cordon Bleu Ingredients: • 4 boneless skinless chicken breast • 4 thicker slice of baked ham • 4 slices of swiss cheese • Oil, flour, and seasoning to fry Directions: Take your chicken and place on a larger cutting board. Take one piece and cover with plastic wrap. This will help not to make a mess when flattening your meat. Take a meat beater and get your chicken so it’s about ¼ inch thick. (The thinner the chicken, the more flavor.) *Generously!* sprinkle with salt and chicken seasoning , then roll in flour. Let sit on a plate for about an hour. (The longer the flour sits,

the better. The flour will stick even better when frying.) Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Heat up your oil, and lightly fry your chicken until golden brown. Convert chicken into a large casserole dish. Bake for 30-45 minutes, depending on how thick your chicken is, till chicken is cooked. While your chicken is baking, throw your ham into your chicken grease and fry your ham slices. When chicken is fully cooked, top with the ham and a slice of swiss cheese. Place back into the oven until the cheese is melted. Top with sauce and garnish with oregano. SAUCE: • 2 tablespoons salted butter • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour • 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon granules • 1-1/2 cups milk • 4 slices of Swiss cheese • 4 oz of EXTRA sharp cheddar cheese in chunks • Salt and pepper (This is your preference, I probably added 1 to 1 ½ tsp of salt, just keep taste testing till you get the flavor you want.) • Minced fresh parsley For sauce, in a small saucepan, melt butter. Stir in flour and bouillon until blended. Gradually whisk in milk. Bring to a boil; cook and stir for 1-2 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Remove from the heat. Stir in cheeses until melted. Pour over your chicken.

hristians commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday, which is the Friday before Easter Sunday. Christians believe that Jesus Christ was flogged and abused in other ways en route to his crucifixion, which ultimately ended with his death. So why would such a day ever be commemorated with the word “good”? There are different theories as to how the word “good” came to be used in connection with the day that commemorates the crucifixion of Christ. In a 2014 article for the BBC, a senior editor with the Oxford English Dictionary, Fiona MacPherson, noted that the adjective “good” has traditionally been used to designate day or season in which religious

observance is held. So in that context, “good” is not used in the way many people use it today. According to Christianity.com, the word “good” might be the result of an older name once used to commemorate Good Friday, which Christians believe is one of the holiest days of the year. Christianity.com notes that Good Friday was once referred to as “God’s Friday.” That name, the theory suggests, gradually evolved into “Good Friday.” Many practicing Christians do not question the name Good Friday, feeling that the day, while one of solemn commemoration, also marks the beginning of the celebration of the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, a celebration that culminates two days later on Easter Sunday.

Meanings Behind the Easter Lily

E

aster symbols and traditions help make the holiday familiar and special. Eggs, hot cross buns and frilly church dresses help paint the picture, and so does a delicate and beautiful white flower. The Easter lily plant is native to both Taiwan and the Ryukyu Islands of Japan. The plant’s flowering season begins in April and ends in June. The plant produces pure white flowers on top of long stems. Easter lilies often adorn homes and church altars during this time of year. Tradition states that the Easter lily

originated in the Garden of Eden from the teardrops of Eve that spread when she and Adam were cast out of the garden. These were believed to be tears of repentance. Historians and biblical scholars say that the lily has always been highly regarded in the Christian Church. Jesus even references the flower in Luke 12:27, stating “Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.” Legend has it that, after Jesus’ death and resurrection, lilies were found

In Easter celebrations, the lily represents Christ’s Resurrection, and thusly new birth and new life. The delicate, white blooms can be viewed as pure, innocent and untainted by the world. The flower itself is used in various ways to tell the resurrection story. The bulb is buried in the ground as a representation of Christ’s tomb. Five Tips for Better Home Safety This Spring

A

s people become more active during the warmer months, keeping home safety top of mind can sometimes go by the wayside. However, when it comes to fire and carbon monoxide safety, you can never be too prepared. Whether you are just beginning to take a stronger safety-first approach or looking to upgrade existing home safety equipment, keep these tips in mind as you spruce up your home for the season. Don’t Just Check Batteries, Check the Alarm

It’s a good idea to review your safety equipment and ensure everything is in good working order at least a couple times each year. For example, every type of smoke alarm must be completely replaced every 10 years whether it’s hardwired into your home or operates on a battery. New smoke alarms commonly come with builtin 10-year batteries, meaning no battery changes, but it’s a good idea to test the units regularly. In fact, most manufacturers recommend weekly. You can also use this time to double-check the gauge on

your fire extinguishers, replace batteries in flashlights, test security systems and replenish first-aid kits. Inspect and Repair Outdoor Areas Set aside time to evaluate any damage or potential hazards as the weather warms. For example, fallen tree branches and leaves can become trapped in gutters and pose a fire hazard. Shutters and fences can also weaken over time. To make sure they’re in good working condition, check that they are securely fastened. Take Advantage of Smart Technology According to the National Fire Protection Association, 40 years ago people had an average of 17 minutes to escape a home fire, but today the average has decreased to about 3 minutes due to synthetic materials

used in modern-day home furnishings. To get the earliest warning of a home fire, install wire-free interconnected batterypowered combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms. When one alarm senses a hazard, all alarms throughout the home sound in unison. Features like colorcoded status rings and built-in 10-year

Keep Outdoor Activities in Mind Cooking on grills is a popular pastime, but thousands of people are injured every year while using them. In fact, according to the National Fire Protection Association, nearly 9,000 home fires are started by grills each year. Now is a good time to get your home’s grilling area in tip-top shape. Keep a 3-foot safety zone around hot grills for children and pets and have a multipurpose home fire extinguisher nearby as fires can occur unexpectedly. Propane and charcoal grills both put off carbon monoxide as a byproduct, so be sure to keep your grill at least 10 feet from the home and ensure it is positioned away from windows, doors, vents and ductwork. sealed batteries make Kidde’s Wire-Free Interconnected Alarms a smart solution for optimal protection. They offer simple setup and operate without the hassle of hardwiring or a Wi-Fi connection. Check Appliances While going through your spring home safety checklist, take time to check your appliances or schedule an annual maintenance check for your stove, oven, heating system and more. According to the American Red Cross, dryers are responsible for approximately 9 of every 10 appliances fires. These common household appliances can collect dust, lint and other particles, which are potential fire hazards and can cause carbon monoxide leaks.

“You’re odd.” “It makes me tired just watching you.” These are just a few of the morning greetings that await me at breakfast. “Jeffrey, pancakes aren’t your thing. You’re more of a cold cereal person.” Flapjacks, griddlecakes, golden circles of joy or hotcakes, no matter the moniker, I love pancakes. The problem is they can be so confusing and complicated. I’m not talking about whipping up a batch of golden-brown, melt in your mouth griddlecakes or trying to decide between a tasty stack of banana, blueberry or buttermilk

flapjacks. My pancake predicament occurs when the naked pancake gets together with maple syrup and butter. To be more specific, what’s the correct way to eat the humble hotcake? It sure isn’t my method. When I go out with friends for breakfast there’s one strict rule: I can’t order pancakes. The reason? How I prepare a stack of cakes for consumption. Here’s the blueprint. 1. Make a circle of maple syrup the size of a pancake in the center of a round plate. 2. Place one pancake on top of the circle. 3. Add a thin layer of butter on top of the first cake. 4. Place pancake number two on top of the

flavors per bite. I searched hither and yon for answers, checked the Internet, consulted friends and studied etiquette books. No luck, still clueless about cakes. What to do? Is it better to top a stack of pancakes with a slab of butter and maple syrup until it slowly cascades down the sides and pools onto the plate? Is it proper to forgo a knife and use a fork to cut the pancakes into pieces? Is butter placed on the cake first and syrup comes second? Or is it the other way around? Does one cut an entire pancake into bite-size pieces and dunk each piece into syrup? Having cakes and eggs, is it acceptable to place the eggs on top of the cakes?

How many pancakes should be in a stack? 3 or 5? Are silver dollar pancakes meant for children or may adults partake in them too? Is it even legal in Pennsylvania to add jelly and peanut butter to pancakes? (I have this horrible dream I’m eating a stack of butter, jelly, peanut butter and maple syrup pancakes. Martha Stewart appears and tells me I’m not eating pancakes correctly. She slaps me in the face before grabbing my pancakes and replacing them with a bowl of plain Cream of Wheat and a linen napkin folded into the shape of a swan.) I was merely adding some drama to the ho-hum hotcake. In a way I was like a modern-day Picasso or Renoir by using the naked pancake as a canvas for my culinary expressions. I was turning my back on the ordinary and going for extraordinary! No longer would I be pancake shamed since I was creating something beautiful and tasty. Did my friends ever change their outlook when I told them about my artistic work with batter and syrup? Sure did. “Jeff, I was wrong when I said you were odd,”

hether you’re a first-time homeowner or looking for an upgrade, deciding what lawn mower to purchase deserves careful consideration. Similar to day-to-day life, new technology over the last five years, specifically in the gas mower industry, is making it easier to maintain your lawn. If you’re in the market for a new mower, consider these tips to find the perfect tool to match your needs. Yard Size Looking at the size of your yard is the first step in determining the best mower for your needs. Walk-behind mowers work well for yards that are 1/2 acre or less, but for yards 1-3-acres or larger, a zero-turn rider (ZTR) or riding mower may be appropriate. Terrain A small, flat yard may only require a walk-behind mower. If your yard is sloped or hilly, you may prefer a selfpropelled mower rather than one you have to push. A walk-behind mower with big back wheels is easier to maneuver across rough terrain. Riding mowers and ZTRs can handle varied terrain, although some handle better on slopes than others. Engine Engines are one of the most important factors affecting a mower’s performance, so purchasing one with a quality engine is essential. For example, Briggs & Stratton engines can be found on several

brands of lawn mowers, including eight of the top 10 walk-behind brands. As a global leader in gasoline engines for outdoor power equipment, these engines power mowers ranging from small walk-behinds to large ZTRs and riding mowers. Special Features While certain features may add to the cost of lawn mowers, many provide functions worth considering. One popular option is a mulching blade, which returns finely cut grass pieces to the lawn as a natural fertilizer. Another common choice is a bagging attachment, which is a grass-catching bag that can be affixed to the side or back of the mower to collect grass clippings. Technology to Get the Job Done Explore high-tech features that make mowing more manageable with these insights from professional home improvement contractor Jason Cameron, host of DIY Network’s “Desperate Landscapes.” Avoid disturbing the neighbors. If finding time to mow means you might be inconveniencing your neighbors, a mower designed to operate quietly may be what you need. To take advantage of weekend mornings without bothering others, look into modern models, some of which even feature technology to make the mower quieter than the average gas mower. Skip oil changes. Seasonal maintenance

can help keep your mower in top condition, and new innovations allow you to skip the messiest part: oil changes. Why is My House So Dusty And What Can I Do?

S

pring is a season of rebirth and renewal. As trees and flowers bloom anew, many people get renewed vigor to tackle projects in and around the house. Spring cleaning projects can take on many forms, from garage overhauls to washing the interiors and exteriors of windows. According to the 2019 American Cleaning Institute National Cleaning Survey conducted by Wakefield Research, 77 percent of households surveyed commit to spring clean projects every year. Dust is a formidable foe during spring cleaning projects. Dust is unsightly and dust mites can trigger allergic reactions. But many homeowners lament that, once they dust, dust returns in a flash. Dust may seem like a never-ending nuisance, but there are some ways to mitigate dust for more than just a few hours. Invest in a better vacuum cleaner Vacuuming carpets can release and resuspend dust and allergens that were trapped in carpeting and throw rugs, advises the Queensland University of Technology. Traditional vacuums may

toss that dust into the air rather than remove it. However, vacuums with HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters can catch particles at .3 microns in size or larger at an efficiency rating of 99.97 percent. Another solution is to switch to hard-surface flooring, which is less likely to trap dust. Change the AC unit filter According to Kadi Dulude, owner of the New York-based Wizard of Homes cleaning service, HVAC filters are supposed to trap particles that flow through the air and the heating and cooling system. Inadequate or dirty filters cannot do that job as thoroughly as new filters. Check the filters in both window and whole-house AC or heating units and replace according to the recommended schedule. Consider filters with a higher MERV rating, which can catch smaller particles, suggests Ragsdale Heating, Air & Plumbing company. Use less cloth and linen The cleaning service Maid to Shine Cleaners suggests that textiles trap more dust, particularly synthetic fabrics. Replacing items around

According to the landscaping tool company Troy-Bilt, soil fertility is the foundation of healthy lawns. In fact, the quality of the soil is essential whether one is growing acres of grass, potted plants or vegetable garden beds. No matter which type of soil a homeowner is working with, there are various ways to make it better. Remove thatch Thatch is a tightly knotted layer of leaves,

grass roots, stems, and other debris that accumulates between the grass blades and the soil. Too much thatch can hinder the movement of water, air and nutrients into the soil. According to organic fertilizer company Organo-Lawn, thatch often occurs if the production of dead organic material in the lawn exceeds the ability of the microorganisms in the soil to break down that organic matter. A half-inch of thatch is normal. If thatch gets too thick, it will need to be removed. The home improvement resource DIY Network says dethatching can take place in the summer, fall and winter using a thatching rake. Aerate

Clay particles are small and bind together tightly, but clay is naturally nutrient-rich. The home improvement site BobVila.com says loamy soil should have equal parts sand and silt and half as much clay. If the lawn is not yet established, loamy soil can be created and then the grass seeds planted. For established soil, after removing thatch and aerating, topdressing the lawn can help. This involves adding a thin layer of soil over the lawn. It can improve the soil without killing the existing turf. Ideally, it should be done in early fall or spring, as this gives the grass time to grow through three to four more mowings before severe heat or cold sets in. Healthy soil is vital to a lush lawn. It takes a little work, but improving soil can create vibrant, healthy, green grass.

A lawn aerator will create holes in the soil. This can improve drainage and encourage worms and helpful microorganisms that require oxygen to thrive in the soil. The Briggs & Stratton Company says the best time to aerate a lawn is during the growing season when the grass can heal and fill in any holes, such as spring and fall. Aeration can help develop deeper grass roots for a healthier lawn. Test and amend soil A great lawn has loamy soil, which has a key ratio of clay, silt and sand. Silt is a granular material of a size between sand and clay that originates from quartz and feldspar. It is the most fertile of the three types of soil components. Sand does not retain water, but it helps to create spaces in the soil that permit air to circulate.

ere in Pennsylvania, the statewide youth spring gobbler hunt is scheduled for Saturday, April 25. The statewide spring gobbler season is slated to open on Saturday, May 2. That’s the good news — at least for the moment. Meanwhile, Nebraska recently announced that they will no longer issue non-resident permits for their spring gobbler hunting. Their desire is to reduce travel into Nebraska from other states because of the current coronavirus pandemic. Additionally, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has cancelled their two day youth turkey season that was to be held on April 4 and 5. Further, their game management units that were scheduled to open April 1 for spring bear hunting have been closed, citing that most of the spring bear hunters travel from out of the area to where the bear hunting occurs. On Monday, April 6, the Washington Department of Fish and Game will meet to reassess reopening the spring bear season and reassess the opening of their upcoming spring turkey season, which is currently to open on April 15. But, for the moment at least, the Pennsylvania seasons are still on, as we

No Job Too Big or Too Small!

all hope they will be. We can still look forward to the youth spring gobbler day and the opening of the statewide season on May 2. We can still plan and daydream about chasing spring gobblers! And, for the next few weeks until the season opens, we can do some scouting to find out just where the birds are and what their current travel routes are. If you hunt on your own property or on property nearby, you are truly fortunate. You can walk out your door, get some great exercise in the fresh, clean air and scout the areas you plan to hunt. If you don’t have to travel too far to where you normally hunt — how about this idea? Since we are now on lockdown and supposed to stay in our homes, except for very limited travel, such as going to the grocery store for food and necessities, why not tie a trip to the grocery store in with a scouting trip. Meaning, that if you are going to the store, stop by your hunting area and do some scouting first! As long as you are not traveling too much further than the grocery store trip, and you are by yourself and not making any additional stops or contacts with other people along the way, why not? You will be getting some well needed exercise and fresh air. I am not asking you to bend the rules — after all we are allowed out

eyes open for shed antlers as you scout for spring gobblers. Finding sheds is a good indication of what bucks made it through the hunting season and any harsh winter weather. Deer trails that run perpendicular to a fence are great locations to find sheds. As the deer jump the fence and land on the other side, sometimes a loose antler will drop where they land. None of us can begin to imagine not having our traditional spring gobbler season, and in reality, I am confident that it will happen. Let’s stay optimistic and think positively as we count down the days until our spring gobbler season opens. Meanwhile, be safe, be smart and stay healthy!

to exercise and you won’t be near others as you hike and scout your favorite hunting spots. Make sure you have a good pair of binoculars with you as you scout for turkeys or look for recent signs of their activities. If they are working through your area, they will be scratching for leftover seeds and acorns. Just like deer and people, they often like to travel old logging roads, so be particularly alert on the sides of these pathways for tracks, dropped feathers or scratching. Just yesterday, among 13 deer that I was watching, one was a buck that still had his left antler attached. Two others were bucks that had shed both of their antlers. It was a reminder to keep your

Other favorites are the chugger type lures; these hard-bodied floating plugs have a flat or concave face that makes a chugging or popping sound when twitched. Not a good choice in weed-choked water but good in open water. Try varying the retrieve to see what entices more strikes. Stickbaits, sometimes referred to as pencil plugs, differ from the chugger in that they are more torpedo-shaped at both ends but mastering the twitching retrieve that makes the lure zigzag across the surface can be very effective. This “walk the dog” action as it is known can sometimes produce when no other topwater lure does. Propbaits are also good to have on hand; a spinning prop at one end or both ends can sometimes produce an action or

disturbance that will bring vicious strikes. Don’t be afraid to experiment; a slow, steady retrieve is a good start, but try some stop and go as well. Another way to create a steady surface disturbance is with a buzzbait. This lure usually involves a skirted jig or spoon attached to a straight metal shaft with a bladed spinner riding above it. After casting, you begin an immediate retrieve that causes the blade to churn the surface; this can be a good choice for muddy, calm surface water. Another surface lure that you don’t want to be without is the hollow, soft plastic, weedless frog type poppers. I’ve actually cast these lures right on top of a bed of lily pads and slowly jerked and stopped the lure when it came to an opening in the

pads-be ready for an explosive strike. Most avid bass fishermen don’t pursue bass with a flyrod, but if you want some great surface action and you know how to use a flyrod, don’t hesitate to tie on a surface popper and work it with varying retrieves. A buddy of mine picked up over a dozen nice smallmouths one afternoon on a stretch of the river. By the way, a spinnerbait, a floating minnow type lure, and even a weedless metal spoon, although not known as surface lures, can all be worked on the surface with great success. Try a floating Rapala wiggled gently on the surface sometime but be ready for some arm jolting strikes. Good bass fishing this summer.

owned, and began casting to the nearest stump sticking out of the water. The jitterbug was one of the very few surface lures at the time, and its big concave lip and enticing wobble made it a top choice for topwater bass fishermen. After a couple of tries, I dropped the lure close to the stump, let it settle, and then began the slow wobbling retrieve. The water erupted under the lure, and one of my biggest bass ever was hooked — so was I. Needless to say, I began adding more jitterbugs and other crawler baits like the Crazy Crawler to my tackle box, and anytime another topwater made an appearance, I grabbed it up. I still use the jitterbug, but there are a lot of other topwater producers you should consider.

Cabin Fever

A

dding to the grimness of what we all have been dealing with, the weather outside was dreary and raining as the dawning of another day of homebound isolation dawned upon us. Jean, entering the bedroom as I was pulling myself out from under the covers, glanced up at the bookcase over our bed and asked, “Have you read all those books?” Assuring her that I had, she shrugged and replied, “Well, I was just trying to find something else for you to do to occupy your time.” Truth be told, I am not an avid reader. To no surprise, those books on that shelve

www.webbweekly.com

above me were all sports books. Most all are non-fiction as I prefer reading accounts of real-life achievements and adventures of those individuals and teams that I have followed over the years. But regardless of how good those books may have been, I much prefer playing, watching or coaching sports over the sedentary activity of turning pages while sitting in a chair. ‘Cabin fever’ is defined by Webster as “a condition of increased anxiety caused by being confined or isolated.” Without question, all of us would rather be stricken with this malady than be faced

with the consequences of Coronavirus, but no doubt the walls of our collective homes seem to be a bit closer than they were several weeks ago. During the last few days of a troubled March, there were occasions when the sky was blue and the days sunny and mild. Scott Throughout Lycoming Lowery County, most of our communities are blessed to have parks and green spaces that provide fun, exercise, and the chance to enjoy the great outdoors. On one of those days on a visit to the South Williamsport Community

Park, it was obvious many folks were taking the chance to find a ‘cabin fever’ remedy. As I enjoyed a walk around the park’s perimeter, individuals could be seen enjoying a variety of sporting activities, while at the same time adhering to our societal new ‘social distancing’ regimentation. In addition to walkers and joggers, there were youngsters kicking soccer balls, riding skateboards and bicycles, fathers pitching baseballs to their kids, Frisbees tossed back and forth from considerable distances and a few golfers taking practice hacks at the vast green grass ahead of them. Following our walk Jean and I decided to enjoy the beautiful day by taking a drive over the mountain on Route 554 from

26 at South Williamsport’s Rodney K. Morgans Stadium is canceled. The current uncertainty makes it impossible for the many three-month preparations leading up to the game to be successfully completed. Proceeds from the annual game are used by the Lions Club to help build ramps for the handicapped, provide Christmas baskets to the needy, donate to the eye bank, North Central Sight Services, Camp Victory, Beacon Lodge and provide scholarships to deserving youth. Also on hold are the 2020 futures of youth baseball, softball, soccer, and tennis leagues, as well as golf tournaments and a variety of sports summer camps held across our region. With MLB on a standstill, the Williamsport Crosscutters are continuing with their preparations for the NYPEN League schedule, however tenuous that may be. Little League International has advised its member leagues to push back their operations until at least May 1. As with all of us, Little League officials are swimming in unchartered waters as they deal with contingency plans pertaining to their various tournaments that include how the Little League Baseball World Series could be affected. Sports in our society have long been a welcomed diversion that has been an important part of the lives of so many. Right now, when those sports are not actively there, it is equally vital that we keep ourselves active, healthy, and safe.

South Williamsport to Elimsport. Driving along the scenic route, we encountered mountain bikers pedaling along. As we crested the mountain and began our downhill trek, we came across a handful of teen-agers stopped alongside the road, also enjoying the spectacular view stretching out before them. It was here I encountered a sporting activity that certainly was a first to these eyes. The boys had a baseball bat, and they were taking turns seeing how far they could hit a ball into the vast power line stretching down the mountain before them. We waved, and they smiled and continued on with their own version of mountain top home run derby. Whatever our own sports diversion may be, we all must find ways to stay active both physically and mentally until this most formable opponent can be overcome. At this writing, with the statewide ban on school re-openings extended indefinitely, it seems more and more unlikely that spring sporting activities will be resumed. For our young people who are participants in high school spring sports, these continue to be distressing times, especially for the seniors who would not get to enjoy the competition they so long have been training for. We have recently learned that one longstanding sporting event that has served as both a football showcase and an important non-profit fundraising activity has been canceled. The South Williamsport Lions Club decided that what would have been the 30th annual North/South District IV game scheduled to have been played June
