From the Publisher…

Penns Woods, Positivity and Special People

A

tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side to everyone that calls our special section of Penns Woods home. You have all done an amazing job during this most difficult time in American history. By committing to and following all the guidelines that have been recommended by our state and federal government, you have shown your love of our great country and each other. You have proven that by following social distancing, we can have some normalcy in our lives and still be able to get out and about for the necessities, recreation, and exercise. This week’s publication features the great outdoors that we are all so very blessed within our area. A special thanks to Ken Hunter for allowing us to share some of this great artistic work on the front cover. What I love about his paintings is that I can walk right into any of them with real-life memories. They’re a great representation of our local hunting and fishing heritage, as well as the beautiful scenery that surrounds us. They are also a great tribute to all of God’s creatures we share the woods and waters with. The Spring gobbler season is my favorite hunting season of the year. It’s just a beautiful time to be out in the woods. What I enjoy most is that it’s interactive, and you just don’t sit and watch. There’s a wide variety of ways to talk turkey

Bill’s

“Service After the Sale”

to that trophy gobbler. If you have never experienced turkey hunting, reach out to someone you know and give it a try. If you’re able to encounter and call in a bird, it will be an amazing experience. The loud gobbling as the woods come to life in the morning, coupled with the back-andforth conversation between caller and bird, will get your heart racing. Heck, you might not even wanna pull the trigger and just take a picture when Tom the Turkey fans out in front of you. Movin’ right along to the fishing season. Our local trout community was thrown a curve when the season was moved up from its intended April 11th start. The season unceremoniously opened the Tuesday prior. This sent both fishermen and those that provide everything that is needed for the season scrambling. A tip of my Webb Weekly camo hat with the American Flag on the side to local businesses that responded with flying colors. My first mention goes to Scott Davenport and his family at East End Gun and Bait Shop. They are great folks who live the American dream and believe in small business. They were able to roll with the punches and provide local anglers just what they were looking for. They turned their walk-in store on Washington Boulevard into a full-service walk-up experience. What a great way to adapt and overcome while observing social distancing to keep everyone safe.

Next stop is the good people at Winner Hardware/Bass Pro Shop in the West End of town. Longtime manager Scott Menne and staff were able to roll with the tide as the store was overwhelmed on Tuesday morning. My son Jimmy and I made a stop there to get our fishing Jim licenses. We had already Webb, Jr. planned to go bass fishing this day. We couldn’t believe the flood of fishermen just waiting to get out in the water. Again, they managed to operate within proper social distancing procedures and get everybody hooked up and off safely. There are commonsense ways to provide social distancing and customer service within every business. We need to reopen our Pennsylvania economy. I hope by the time you’re reading this, we’re back to business with a social distancing twist. A well-deserved heartfelt thank you to all those working so hard within area grocery stores. They are truly on the front lines when it comes to dealing with the American public. Not only do they face exposure to every illness each and every day, but they also deal with customers that believe those working the registers and/or counters within the stores are the owners. Again, we are very blessed that most are on their best behavior, but some are not — shame on these people. One special lady I would like to mention that goes above and beyond every day is Tina Seitzer of Weis Markets. If you’ve shopped

the River Avenue store, you know Tina. She works the last register and is always quick with a kind greeting, great customer service, and to wish you a blessed day. You can tell she loves her job and loves working with people. She exemplifies hard work and commitment to her employer. Great job, Tina! Another lady I would like to give a shout out to his Tammy Faye, who works the service desk at Murray Motors Muncy. She is always kind and professional. She goes the extra mile to make sure the most important person to every business, the customer, is taken care of. At this most difficult time, she is making sure that proper social distancing and disinfecting practices are being observed. This includes wiping off the keys to your vehicle as she places them on the counter for you to pick up and making makes sure the pen you used goes into a container to be sterilized. I don’t think any of this was in her job description a couple of months ago. Tammy proves that business can and must go on. Again, you must practice social distancing to keep everyone safe, but there is no reason the door to any business should be closed. I’m going to stay positive, and hopefully, by the time you’re reading this, you’re able to take advantage of the 84 month no interest deals most area dealerships will be offering. As well as supporting all your favorite local business folks and restaurants. Please be safe, stay healthy, and take care of one another out there. Most importantly, stay positive and find the silver lining in every day. God Bless America.

ach week I keep hoping I’ll have something to discuss with you that isn’t COVID-related. I’m sorry to say this ain’t the week and next isn’t looking real good either. But, I keep trying to find the silver-lining in things. I think it’s vitally important to keep our heads up in this odd and trying time. This week we are focusing on the great outdoors. Which is great, considering it’s about the only thing left for us to do! So, what can we do to get outside, get some fresh air, and enjoy the (hopefully) warmer temperatures to break up the quaran-boredom? We are lucky enough to live in an area with lot of great outdoor opportunities. And they are spread out enough to keep us all within social distancing guidelines. If you are outdoorsy the way Ken Hunter and Jon Pries are outdoorsy, then you have probably already stopped by your favorite fishing spot and taken advantage of the spring trout season. Or, maybe you are out walking your hunting spots to see if the turkeys are gobbling. These are both great ways to get out of the house and enjoy some outside time.

If, like me, you aren’t a hunter or fisher, nor particularly outdoorsy, it takes a little more thought to find some ways to get outside. Steph Obviously, the Nordstrom Riverwalk/bike paths are a great choice. While you may find a good number of people on the Riverwalk, don’t forget how far those paths extend. From beyond Montoursville, to beyond the Heshbon area, you can certainly find a nice path to walk or — if you are weird — run, without running into a lot of people. These are great areas to take the kids and dogs for some fresh air and expend that no-more-gym-class-or-recess excess energy. If you are feeling more adventurous or looking for a more challenging walk, there are a lot of great trails in the area too. I’m not much for hiking, but even I would love to get out and explore Jacoby Falls, which I’ve heard is pretty amazing no matter what time of year. There are lots of other great options around including Smith’s Knob Trail in Tiadaghton State Forest, Loyalsock and

LIVING WELL put together a site where instructional videos can be uploaded to help these athletes train at home with limited, or no, equipment. Knowing that I love a good challenge and that I was a fan of working out with “found” objects, he asked if I would put together series of videos that would help these athletes keep up their powerlifting at home. Of course, I couldn’t possibly refuse. The point of this story is that even in the midst of a world-wide pandemic, life goes on, and there are still good works to be done. It is easy to get caught up in our own lives with our own problems, but it is how

we treat one another in times of crisis that defines us. It is important now, more than ever, that we show gratitude, help each other, and keep moving forward. I was grateful to get the phone call from my friend and mentor and was honored that he thought enough of me to ask a favor. I am also glad to help these Special Olympians in some small way, and I am excited to work on an interesting project. All of us have things for which to be joyful. Find them, stay positive, and stay safe. We will get through this together (but separately, you still need to stay home)! Note: Regarding my friend, the last time

we had spoken was about a year ago. My former coach and his wife were to be inducted into my high school’s Hall of Fame for a lifetime of community service. When I heard of the award, I felt so strongly that people should know how profoundly and positively my coach had affected my life that I wrote an email to my high school’s current athletic director. My letter that was read at the award ceremony: “I will not be able to attend but just wanted to drop a quick note to say how much of a positive impact these people have made in my life and the lives of many others. Mike took me under his wing when I wrestled for him in high school and became like a second big brother to me. I used to actually

get out of bed at 3:30 a.m. and my drive old Chevette to an unheated gym just so I could work out with Mike at 4 a.m. I didn’t realize I had the ability to sleep in at the time, though I doubt Mike would have given me the choice. He taught me discipline and self-esteem and the value of hard work. In addition, he gave me great life advice. Had he not done these things for me, I fear that my life may have taken a much darker path during some very formative teenage years. He probably never knew that he had this much of an impact. Still, I felt it was important to put my gratitude into words and am very glad that these two very deserving people are being honored for their many contributions to society. Please feel free to share my comments.”

atie Jones of South Williamsport made a statement earlier this year at the Big Ten Indoor Track and Field Championships by taking gold for PSU in women’s pole vaulting with a height of 4.25 meters (13’11-1/4”). Her nearest competitor was Jessica Bray from Perdue, who cleared a height of 4.15 meters. In addition to taking the Big Ten title, Jones set a personal record and

an all-time school record for Penn State. The previous winner for PSU in women’s pole vaulting was Sara Dougherty who won in 2004. Jones began her career in gymnastics. For many gymnasts that aren’t Olympic bound the options to continue in the sport are somewhat limited. Pole vaulting is one such option and Katie wanted to give it a try. Pole vaulting demands strength and body awareness; two things Jones has in abundance. “Vaulters often use gymnastic drills in

state titles with heights of 12’11” 1/2 and 13’4”. It was also around this time that colleges began to contact her. Division I schools such as Virginia, Virginia Tech, UNC, Duke, Villanova, PSU, and others all showed interest. When asked how she settled upon Penn State, Jones said that her choice of college was dependent upon having her program of interest, Kinesiology, and being within an 8-hour car ride from home. PSU fit both criteria. Her Senior year Jones said that she trusted her ability and set out to break the PA indoor and outdoor state records which she did with a height of 13’9” at indoor nationals and 13’7” at outdoor

nationals. “The transition to college was a big adjustment.”, Jones said. “I needed to get used to college life, new coaches, new training staff, and an entirely new atmosphere. It was much more intense training.” Though still adjusting to college-level athletics, she still managed to clear heights of 13’5” indoors and 13’6” outdoors which allowed her to place in the Big Ten. Unfortunately, due to injury, Jones needed to take off her sophomore year from competition. She was, however, able to come back strong this year competing as a red-shirt sophomore. “I

was in good shape and focused a lot on technique. Leading up to the Big Ten Championships, I was able to clear 13’8”, three weekends in a row. You want to be consistent at the big heights.”, Jones said. When asked if she had any advice for people facing adversity, Jones said, “To people who are injured or just in a slump, keep pushing. You’ll get to the other side and once you taste success, it will all be worth it.” For now, Jones said she just wants to focus on the current season and keep progressing. One of her goals this season is to consistently hit over 14’. Since she is a red-shirt sophomore, she is eligible for two more seasons.

their training and gymnastics is a great background for vaulting,” said Jones. In high school she was a year-round athlete, competing in soccer, basketball, and track. Her freshman year she won districts in pole vaulting and qualified for states. Her sophomore year she won districts again and took 4th at states with height of 11 feet. Showing potential, Jones decided to up her training her junior year by cutting back to indoor and outdoor track and soccer only. She spent her Winter season also training at Vaultworx in Harrisburg, where she received specialized pole-vaulting instruction 2-3 days per week. Her Winter training paid off with Jones winning both district and

How to Eat Right, Bite by Bite By Madeline Waters, registered dietitian nutritionist Nutrition Services, UPMC

M

arch is National Nutrition Month, a campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to bring awareness to nutrition by encouraging the public to develop healthy eating and physical activity habits. This year’s theme is “Eat Right, Bite by Bite.” Consider the following information to help you lead a healthy lifestyle, bite by bite. Small goals and sustainable changes can have a cumulative healthful effect, and every little bit — or bite — of nutrition, is a step in the

right direction. Variety Is the Spice of Life Aim for variety and balance in your diet. Achieve this by eating a variety of nutritious foods every day from all the food groups. Consider tools such as MyPlate, which provide a visual for how to properly balance your plate: Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. Choose fresh, frozen, dried, or canned fruits. Add fruit to a salad, serve with oatmeal, blend in a smoothie, or enjoy as a dessert. If choosing canned fruits, choose fruits canned in water or 100% fruit juice rather than syrup or added sugars. Add fresh, frozen, or canned vegetables to meals, or enjoy as a snack. Prepare nutrient-dense

vegetables with healthy cooking methods: steamed, sautéed, roasted, or raw. If choosing canned vegetables, choose lowsodium options, and choose options that are not packed with cream or cheese sauce, as these can add fat and sodium. Make a quarter of your plate grains. Focus on whole grains. Look for whole grains listed first on the ingredients list. Try oats, whole wheat bread, quinoa, brown rice, popcorn, and whole wheat pasta. Make a quarter of your plate proteins. Choose lean cuts of meat, skinless poultry, seafood, and eggs. Vary your proteins by including plant-based options such as beans and peas, unsalted nuts and seeds, nut and seed butters, and soy foods. Be mindful of sodium and fat and limit processed meats, fatty or marbled red meat, poultry with

skin, and fried meats, poultry, and fish. Try low-fat or fat-free dairy. Choose lowfat or fat-free milk, yogurt, and fortified soymilk. Aim for low-fat yogurt that is also low in added sugars. Try low-fat or fat-free cream, sour cream, and cheeses. Limit milk, cheeses, and creams made from whole milk due to saturated fat content. Limit excess sodium, unhealthy fats, and added sugars. Read the nutrition facts labels and ingredients list to better understand what is in your food. Limit items high in sodium, unhealthy fats (saturated and trans fats), and added sugars. Planning and Prepping Can Go a Long Way Stay on track with a healthy lifestyle by planning and prepping meals. The

EATING

thought of planning and prepping may be overwhelming, but the benefits often outweigh the time it takes to prepare. Meal planning can help balance your plate, schedule, and wallet. Below are some meal planning and prepping tips: Develop a menu. Plan a menu for the week including a variety of food groups. Shop with the sales at your local grocery store. Purchase produce that is seasonal as it’s often more affordable at your local grocery store or farmer’s market. Build a pantry. Make meal prep and planning easier by having a pantry or a designated area to keep mealtime staples: whole grains, spices, oils, canned fruits

and vegetables, beans, etc. Make it fun! View meal prep as an opportunity to try new foods and flavors. Discover what foods and recipes you enjoy eating. As you spend more time in the kitchen you will inevitably become more comfortable and confident in your cooking skills. Get the family involved for a bonding experience. Meal prep should help alleviate mealtime stress and make providing a nutritious meal for you and your family easier throughout the week. me. I’m really trying to make life feel as normal as possible for them. Easter still isn’t here yet, but by the time you are reading this it will be over. Saturday night I’ll be prepping our ham, making filling, baked corn, and stuffing my kids Easter baskets for the Easter Bunny to arrive. I planned an egg hunt and a scavenger hunt, too. Of course, there will be pie. Mylanta, my Aunt Sylv makes, I swear, ten different pies for Easter. She makes sure everyone has their favorites. (Isn’t she dear?) Another one of my favorite Easter traditions is her pies. I have a hard time choosing between her butterscotch, coconut cream and peanut butter! Little slices here and there throughout the day is how us Liddick family does it! So, Easter morning we will still get up, and dang it all, we are going to be wearing our church Easter clothes. My husband said “Seriously!? Who the heck is gonna see us?” My reply, “Me and Jesus!!” We will watch an Easter service, look for baskets RESIDENTIAL & have an Easter from the bunny, still COMMERCIAL SERVICES: meal, Full eggService/Maintenance hunt with scavenger hunt, and I’ll make sure this will be the Easter Spring Repair Panel Replacement of Coronavirus that my kids will never forget! order! Praise the Lord! Orange Slice Jello Jigglers Cut 6 oranges in half and hollow out. I squeezed all the juice out first and made homemade orange juice! I then filled each of the orange halves with water just to make sure they didn’t leak. I did use some electrical tape for some tiny holes. Boil as much water as you need. I used 4 different Jello flavors, so I boiled 4 cups of water. NOTE: One 3oz box of Jello to 1 cup of boiling hot water. Place all the orange halves on something flat like a large plate or cookies sheet. Then fill the oranges with all kinds of flavored Jello. Place in the refrigerator 4-6 hours, or until firm. Then cut in half and serve. I made these for Easter years ago and they were a big hit! Not only did the kids love them, but so did the adults!

pring is in the air, and for the turkey hunting enthusiast, that means it’s time to locate some potential gobbler hunting spots. The spring turkey season is set to start statewide on May 2 and run until May 30. A big part of spring gobbler hunting is actually locating good hunting spots sometime before the opening day, and sometimes that can be more challenging than the actual hunt. There are differing thoughts on how to locate spring gobblers; some hunters like to hike into potential locations looking for turkey signs and listening for gobbles while others prefer to watch and listen from a distance. I know of several successful spring gobbler hunters who hike into potential areas and even make use of several different calls to get a response. Admittedly most of those hunters will usually refrain from using a turkey call and will often rely on a barred owl call at the end of the day; a gobbler response at this time

also gives away the likely roosting spot. Knowing a gobbler roosting location can be valuable when it comes time to set up in the morning for the day’s hunt. Another call that can bring results is a crow call. A lot of spring gobbler hunters are a bit reluctant to traipse into their potential hunting locations before the season opens, hoping instead to avoid spooking or disturbing their prey. Staying out of the “heart of your hunting area” doesn’t necessarily mean you can’t do any beneficial scouting. Past experience or relying on areas where you have seen birds in the past is a good start, especially if good roosting sights and good food sources are available. Although gobblers are definitely more interested in finding a mate than finding food, they may still be around good roosting sights and areas where they had acorns and beechnuts throughout the winter. I personally tend to avoid roaming around too much in areas I plan to hunt, but I do try to observe and listen from

displaying. Two weeks ago, a couple of us guys were invited up to a friend’s cabin, and shortly after we arrived, we looked out the window, and 50 yards away were five gobblers taking turns strutting. While I try to avoid going into my hunting spots, I might, on occasion, make a quiet pass through an area looking for signs. Look for things like scratching and dusting sights, droppings (gobblers are J-shaped, and hens are a rounded pile), breast feathers (gobblers will have a black-tipped feather, hens do not) and tracks when possible. Hopefully, your pre-season scouting will pay off, whether done from a distance or up close and personal.

a bit of a distance. I’ll admit it; when I go down the road in my vehicle, I’m always checking the fields and even the open woods for any sightings of turkeys — that’s why I prefer to have my wife drive if we are both out and about. Just this past couple of weeks, I have spotted several groups of turkeys in open fields as we drove by and there were gobblers fanned out in each sighting. One of those sightings was in a field only 50 yards from where I called in a nice gobbler for my granddaughter last spring. As of this writing, I have not heard any gobbling yet, but I do often stop and listen from a “safe” distance. Even though I’ve yet to hear any gobbling, I’ve seen plenty of birds fanned out and

ecently, while my fishing friend Paul Blechner and I were checking the Big Pine Creek water basin for rising trout, we noticed a Pennsylvania black bear trying to get into a roadside garbage dumpster below Blackwell. That’s not unusual in Pennsylvania because, in reality, we have a lot of black bears in this neck of the woods. It was amusing, however, because the bear could get his head under the steel lid, and all we could see was the rear end and two hind legs. Our conservation quickly changed from scanning Big Pine Creek’s best pools for rising trout on the water to bear personalities, interesting problems with (grizzly bear with cubs) bears, and how we have learned to live with them. Our Pennsylvania bear belongs to a single species Ursus americanus. Their range is quite extensive in the North American continent, and it is not unusual to find large populations in the country of Mexico and well into Canada. For 36 long summers, I had the pleasure to live and work as a park ranger in great bear country. That country was the Teton Wilderness, the Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Teton National Park, and Montana’s Crow Indian Reservation, all with remote bear habitat. These areas have a wide range of environmental conditions that influence bear behavior. The wilderness regions are open to hunting, while the park’s policy advocates an existing natural population. That produces a bear with exceptional physical and emotional characteristics. The fact that I worked at the South Gate of Yellowstone Park, in these great

isolated regions, gave me the experience that I was actually living with bears. Yellowstone’s Ranger quarters and the John D. Rockefeller Parkway (JDR) ranger staff are housed just inside the southern boundary of Yellowstone National Park (YNP). We often refer to that area as the South Gate. Bears in those more isolated areas may look the same as a Pennsylvania bear, but generally, a bear of the same age as a Pennsylvania bears are much smaller and weigh much less because of the lack of food. And a nice size bear there may tip the scales at 300 pounds. It is all the availability of food. And that has always been the source of the bear management problems in YNP. For decades the population of black bears and grizzly bears would vary from 350 black bears to 200 grizzly bears. Their basic source of food was in three large landfill dump sites in the YNP. Black bears became roadside bums, and it was not uncommon for a summer visitor to see 50 black bears a day begging for a handout for as long as the granddaddy of all parks existed. To manage the problem, the (YNP) officials closed all three dumpsites at one time. This decision was contrary to those of the great biologists, John and Frank Craighead, Penn State graduates, who advocated shutting the dumpsites down gradually. The park won that battle of words. Black bear numbers on the roads exploded. To solve that problem, frequent roadside visiting black bears were shot by park rangers and hauled into the forests for predator consumption. For the visitor, particularly, backcountry hikers, the nasty grizzly bears, were always a

grizzly killed them both. A young camper from Germany was killed in her tent, and the only related evidence of food was two candy wrappers in her pockets. Also, fatalities were rare with black bears; we did have one suspect incident where a young girl lost her life. Even in this country, it is important that we keep food sources away from bears. Although young February born cubs may appear cute, it is important not to back mom into a corner. Always give them a chance to escape. In my time, I had more trouble with a mother moose and her young and a female elk with young. I have actually been chased by both while flyfishing the great rivers of the west. With the hiking and fly-fishing season soon to begin, these are primary precautions that we should adhere to when invading the homes of wild animals.

concern. In particular, attacks occurred when backpackers slept in their tents with food or in clothing that had food odors. The second most common reason for attacks occurred when a hiker somehow got between a sow bear and her cubs, and that spelled big trouble for a hiker. We have to remember that in some cases, a sow bear could get separated from her clubs, but be assured she is not far away and is keeping an open eye on her clubs. She will kill you quickly to protect her young. Another basic rule is always to remember that “a bear goes where his nose takes him.” In my time, there were five campers killed where campers and food odors were involved. In one related case, two campers stored their food in their tent in their backpacks, and a

n just over a week, the one-day Pennsylvania Youth Spring Gobbler Hunt will take place – Saturday, April 25th to be exact. On the following Saturday, May 2, our statewide Spring Gobbler Season gets underway. These are the days many of us have been daydreaming about for weeks, so let’s take a look at a few opening day tactics that may ensure success in the turkey woods. There are two things you still have a little time to do before opening morning, and both are extremely important. The first is to pattern your shotgun. It is amazing how often this critical step is overlooked, and it can be the one reason that will insure failure in making a clean kill on a turkey you may have worked very hard to get in range. Whether on a paper target with a turkey silhouette or on a flat patterning board, it only takes one or two shots to verify that your shotgun is shooting exactly where you want it to.

Secondly, have you located your setup spot for your predawn entry in the woods? Hopefully, while you have been scouting to locate a gobbler or two, you also determined exactly where you plan to sit once you have arrived on opening morning. If you have not, there is still time to locate a spot, but it would be best to do so in mid-afternoon, when any turkeys in the area have long since left their roosting locations and are out feeding. When the eastern sky is beginning to become light on opening morning is not the time to be walking around aimlessly looking for a spot to hunt from! During the opening day and throughout the early season, the turkeys in the area you plan to hunt should be relatively undisturbed. They will generally accept some tactics that later in the season they will have been educated to and, thus, will be less likely to respond to. I refer to decoys, calling and positioning. Many of the turkeys may never have seen a decoy before (in the previous

hunter in the area! Choosing an exact position from which to hunt, hopefully well before the season opens, can be a key factor in a successful hunt. Select a large tree near a roost area or in the area where the turkeys travel or feed, and make sure there are clear areas through which to shoot and that there is no brush to obstruct a clear view and clear shot. The ideal tree will be at least shoulder width in size. Ideally, there will be several sites in the area where you will be hunting that you can use as your setup location. It is easy for the turkeys to pattern you when they hear calling coming from the same exact location day after day. Remember to carry more calls than you think you need. You should have a box call or two, and one or two slate calls, and several mouth calls as well. You can never know ahead of time just which call will work best on a given day. By having multiple calls that offer a variety of tone and pitch, you will have a much better chance at interesting a passing gobbler. Good luck, and remember, it is critical to positively identify your target and the surroundings before you pull the trigger!

31 • Webb Weekly April 15, 2020

spring or fall season), thus it may be the best time to try using a decoy setup to help lure in a bird. In a wooded setting, where you may not want to carry multiple decoys, a single hen decoy placed along a logging road or an opening in the woods will help draw the interest of a gobbler. If setting up in a field edge or other large openings, it would be better to use multiple decoys. Two hen decoys and a jake decoy make an ideal setup to bring in a mature gobbler who is looking to defend his territory and his hens. When it comes to calling, simply don’t overcall. Too often, we “learn” our techniques by watching videos or TV shows, where aggressive and continual calling seems to be the norm. What they don’t depict on these shows and in the videos are the long periods of silence that occur in real life as they patiently wait for a response from a nearby bird. A period of 20 to 30 minutes between calls will be much more realistic in the woods, and then a single cluck or two, or a short series of yelps will sound much more like a live hen. Continual and aggressive calling will best serve to educate nearby turkeys that there is a

Along the same line are the Rapalas, Rebels, and similar plastic minnow-type artificials. Some buddies of mine whom I consider real experts with spinners prefer to cast upstream and work the spinner downstream with the current — keep it just off the bottom and keep the blade spinning. Whatever method you choose, I would suggest not trying to remove a limit of trout each time out — practice some catch and release, especially this early in the season, and there will be more trout available later in the season. Be careful how you handle the trout if you plan to release them. Enjoy the early opener and give everybody around you some space.

regular garden worms, and even some of the newer Berkley scented artificial baits. Obviously, another popular choice of the early season trout angler is the live minnow rig. While there are a number of different ways to rig a minnow, most anglers like to thread the line through the mouth and out the anal and then slide a double hook over the loop on the end. Pitch the rig up and across and bring it back with a variety of retrievesadd weight as needed. By the way, there are several good old reliable artificial lures that still take plenty of trout under the right conditions. The good old CP Swing and a number of other in-line spinners are very effective on all trout species.

the “others” fish along the bridges or easy access points. I prefer to isolate even without a virus. I did run into one of my chums. We talked about these strange times and stayed six feet apart. Much love, Spoon. I saw several others, but I personally did not see any crowds. Most of the folks on Lycoming were adhering to the guidelines. I posted a secluded landscape and told my online audience that I snuck out for a few casts on opening day. I didn’t think much of it since I do the same thing just about every day. Fishing is my passion. I am possessed. My post started a healthy conversation. The comments came fast. One of my good friends asked the simple question. If it’s okay to fish — then why can’t we golf? Hmm. These are scary times. Continue to pray for our nation and pray for our state. Pray for Lycoming County and those who keep us safe. Pray for our community leaders and school districts. They all need our love. Wash your hands. Maintain your distance. Stay home if you can. Please stay safe. Stay calm, and remember if you must — fish alone and away from crowds. Cheers.

The brains were hoping to minimize intrastate and interstate travel across the Commonwealth too. “Outdoor recreational activities, including fishing, lift our spirits and help relieve stress, but they need to be done with attention to social distancing guidelines to help protect ourselves and others, and slow the spread of COVID-19,” DCNR Secretary Cindy Adams Dunn said. “That means practicing physical distancing of six feet, avoiding crowds and staying close to home, and being prepared with a mask and hand sanitizer.” I decided to fish on opening day and saw many people who were doing the same. My lovely bride accused me of using this last-minute decision by the state as an opportunity to get away. OPENING DAY? YOU’VE GONE FISHING THE PAST 16 DAYS. She was correct. I went solo to a few of my favorite spots on Lycoming Creek. I am no longer fishing in the hood. I had some success and took a few photos. It was pretty quiet. Most of

His educational successes coupled with a positive interview with the Pirates at a Duquesne job fair landed him the job with the Pirates. “Having a job with an MLB team has been a very rewarding experience. I was a rugby player growing up and had played in New Zealand and thought I would have a career in rugby, however due to an injury I had to find an alternative to that career. When the opportunity arose to be a part of the Pirates, I jumped on it and it’s been a thrilling experience. Like every job it has its perks, and it has its drawbacks, but we really try to be as close to a real family as we can in the office. The work environment has been nice, and I feel like it is my second home.

“Pirates baseball will always remind me of my grandfather. When I would visit him, he would always have the Pirates games on the TV and loved to talk baseball. I keep a photo of my grandfather on my desk. My passion for engaging and helping Pirates fans stems from our relationship. I hope through helping our fans I am helping others enjoy time with their family members like I had with him. Even though he is no longer with us, I see him in every one of our fans and that is very special to me.” No doubt across our region there are folks who at one time or another had visions or hopes of a profession in some type of professional sports. While most of these dreams were never fulfilled those sports, themselves are still an important part of our

daily lives – at least they were until recent times. As the weeks move on discussions continue as to when, or if, those sports we love will return anytime soon. I asked Macios if he had any advice to give young people interested in pursuing a job in baseball. His response was quite simple; “They should think about what your ‘why’ is. Besides identifying that ‘why’, they should make connections with anyone in the industry. We all got help to get where we are, and we would be happy to reciprocate that.” As we wait, we’re all anxious for the strains of ‘Take Me Out to the Ballgame’ to be ringing in our ears. In the meantime, here’s hoping my ‘six-pack’ doesn’t go flat sitting on the Pittsburgh Pirates shelf!

Those events remain very special to me and it all started simultaneously with returning to the United States.
