You Can Kiss My Mask The Attempted Oppression of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness “Those who would give up liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety.” Benjamin Franklin

T

he United States of America was founded on this single principle — FREEDOM. Our founding fathers understood that limiting government power was the key to providing liberty. That is why they were so extremely careful in drafting our Constitution and then adding the Bill of Rights. They understood that the greatest threat against our Nation could come from within — by those using the power of the government for tyrannical purposes. This is why they believed it so important to keep the responsibility of governing our Nation in the hands of the people, for the people, by the people. They also understood that our freedom in the name of God would require eternal vigilance. That it would be a constant battle of good versus evil, to maintain our liberty. I love our Country, especially our little corner that we call home, but have always had a strong distrust of government. I understand the fragility of our freedom and how both power and money corrupt. My Father taught me, and I have always believed that less government is better government. There are many things about our Nation’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic that are troublesome. However, the two that are most alarming were not caused by the virus, they were revealed. It has now become obvious that over past decades those elected have not only grown the size of our federal and state government to alarming levels but have grown their power over the people to oppressive levels. Secondly, many who reside in our Country are way too quick to give up their freedoms provided by the Constitution without even questioning why, which is just unconscionable to me. It goes without saying that the pandemic the world is fighting is a terrible and very challenging obstacle. I have been very clear in my columns about the importance

of one’s health and following the CDC guidelines, which have been asked of every American citizen. I believe our area has done a great job within this framework, especially that of social distancing. However, we cannot sacrifice everything that makes us who we are out of fear of a disease or even death. Hopefully, you have a strong faith and understand there’s an opportunity for eternal life and peace. Our state cannot continue down the current path of economic and social suicide. This will destroy Pennsylvania, and it will never return to the place we know as home. At some point, the fear-mongering by Governor Wolf and the media must stop and give way to the facts. Yes, there are some hotspots within the state that must stay shut down to protect the people, and those living adjacent to them. But you cannot trample our constitutional rights and financial wellbeing in the name of fear. Here in Lycoming County at press time, we had 32 cases of the Coronavirus. Our county is 1,244 square miles, which is larger than the state of Rhode Island. The county’s population is about 114,000. As long as those 32 individuals follow the quarantine procedure and we continue to be vigilant, there’s no reason we shouldn’t be business as usual here in Lycoming County. This logic applies to most counties within our state. The actual facts just don’t support the reaction by our state government and their unwillingness to change their approach based on actual numbers. If things change and there is an outbreak of cases, you choose another course of direction. One thing that has been very disheartening since this all began is that everything must be final. The cancelation of events, the closing of businesses, and the ending of social outings indefinitely. How can you do that with not knowing what the outcome is going to be? You postpone for a reasonable amount of time and then revisit the situation. Obviously, at this point of the year, it makes no sense to reopen schools. The Governor has had the opportunity of our patience and ample time. There is no

possible way he can justify his decision making when it comes to essential and non-essential businesses or life-sustaining and non-life sustaining, whatever verbiage he chooses. First of all, it’s discriminatory to even come up with classifications deemed essential and non-essential. Jim Again, a trampling of the Webb, Jr. constitutional rights of the American business owner. This is very similar to the way he trampled freedom of religion by ordering all the churches to close. You gotta be kidding me. I do not have enough paper to go through how many times he’s tramped on one’s personal rights. It’s that communistic/socialistic elitist ideal that those that govern know more than the people, are smarter than the people, and will take care of the people. More to the point, they’re telling we the people, that we are stupid and can’t make our own commonsense decisions. We need to be told how to wash our hands, cover our mouths, and to avoid people when sick. Incidentally, these are the freedoms that our forefathers were most concerned about protecting, that of the decision making by the people. We must immediately reopen business in Pennsylvania. This can be done within the guidelines of the CDC. Nearly 1.5 million Pennsylvanians are out of work, which ranks 1st in the Country. We are the only state that closed restaurants, car dealerships, real estate offices, clothing stores, liquor stores, and more — all at once. New York, which has the highest number of COVID cases, is still operating the above-listed businesses. Depending on where you reside. As are all the states adjacent to us. There is more of a risk being created by folks driving to New York to buy a car, clothing, or liquor than getting it right at their neighborhood store. Not to mention that this is putting a bullet in the economy of the Keystone State. Governor Wolf ’s actions have also not proven successful. When comparing numbers per capita and timeframe facts, Pennsylvania’s numbers regarding COVID-19 are no better than and/or worse than many states. Back to that first list of essential, non-essential thing being discriminatory towards small businesses. How do you allow

big box stores the ability to sell the same products you deemed non-essential to the smaller family-owned business? It’s completely ridiculous. Not to mention, if you were realistic about cutting down on people running out to the big box stores, they would be selling only what is deemed essential. How do you allow online sales to continue not just of products, but of used vehicles through Carvana? You are sticking the knife into the back of Pennsylvania auto dealers. I hate the term social distancing. This is what technology and cell phones have done to the American people. I like the term “safe space.” There is a way to keep every business open and operational with “safe space.” This, coupled with limiting the number of customers allowed in a place of business at any one time. This concept could be applied to churches and pretty much everything that has been shut down. Back to the discriminatory practices, you cannot make our elderly population stay within their home because they’re old and more at risk. This is their decision to make. If they wanna go out and about God bless them — they clearly understand the risk at this point in time. The same can be said for every American. Everyday decisions are made based upon probability and risk versus reward. Sometimes you make the wrong decision, and there’s a price to pay. That’s life, at least as it’s intended to be lived here in the land of the free. There is no way on God’s green earth it’s constitutional for Governor Wolf to make you wear a mask or pressure stores into not allowing entrance to individuals not wearing a mask. It’s also in no way constitutional for Governor Wolf to force employers not only to make employees wear a mask but also to take their temperature upon reporting to work. If someone wants to wear a mask, this is the United States of America, by all means, please wear a mask, if someone chooses not to, that’s great. This approach can be applied to every decision the Governor has made for you. He needs to live and let live. Allow “We the People” to make our own decisions. That is the very principle our Nation was founded on. Maybe somebody needs to tell Governor Wolf COVID-19 originated in China, not that we are operating under the governing rules of Communist China. God Bless America.

Bulgarelli. According to Director Bulgarelli, the band has broken all of the school records for competition scoring, including setting the highest competition score ever achieved in school history (94.05) and best placement at Atlantic Coast Championships (6th). The 2019 Lancer Marching Band also won the school’s second Cavalcade of Band Championship, building upon its first champion-

uring the 2019-2020 competition season, the current edition of the Loyalsock Lancers Marching Band has earned the right to be called “one of the best, if not the best in the history of Loyalsock Township High School,” that is the opinion of their hard-working director, Ryan

ship in 2017. “The Lancer Marching Band placed 6th in a 13-state region and competed against schools with populations three to four times our size at ACCs. That being said, we are incredibly proud of the time, effort, hard work, and dedication that our students have put into this year’s production,” Bulgarelli told Webb Weekly. “Our 2019 show, entitled “Heart of the Machine,” has proven to be an audience favorite, frequently leaving spectators on their feet cheering or with tears in their eyes. Our story of the Tin Man’s journey to find his heart has resonated with band and audience members alike, and we are incredibly proud to have the opportuni-

ty to share our artistic and inspirational story with audiences this year.” Outside of the marching band, he said they are incredibly proud to offer their students a robust and holistic music education experience. The Symphonic Band has grown to over 90 members that meet to make music every day at LTHS. The vocal music program has been recognized by the Community Theatre League, being nominated for and winning several Ray of Light Awards in the past few years. Their students represent Loyalsock at local, regional, and statewide events, and they are incredibly proud of the music that they make and

nother week of ‘Stay-at-Home’ orders down, and Lord only knows how many more to go. For those that are cooped up at home, I hope you are keeping safe and sane. I know that for some of you, official schoolwork at home started this week, and I hope you are navigating that OK. I know, it’s a lot, it’s sort of confusing, and trying to work ‘Study Island’ is making you wish for a tech-free beach vacation. But, once again, me being the forever optimist, it’s time to find a silver lining. Being stuck at home isn’t great, but it is a great opportunity to catch up on that reading you never have time to do. It’s also a great time to get the kids to read. I’ve got some suggestions for children’s books courtesy of our own Terri Schlichenmeyer (The Bookworm Sez) and some of my own. Books are great antidotes to being cooped up for weeks, and “Johnny’s Pheasant” by Cheryl Minnema, illustrated by Julie Flett is a good one to have. It’s the story of an injured bird, a grandma’s love, and a boy with dreams. Another goodie for little readers is “Bedtime for Sweet Creatures” by Nikki Grimes, pictures by Elizabeth Zunon. It’s a tale of goodnight, and it’s perfect for little sleepyheads. For the middle-grader who worries about the earth, “Bugs in Danger” by Mark Kurlansky, illustrated by Jia Liu is a great

find. This book looks at climate change, environmental issues, why the bug population has declined over the past few years, and what we can do to Steph stop it. Another book Nordstrom to find is “Wildlife Adventure” by Coyote Peterson. It’s a book with facts and activities and it might make the time go a little faster. Little biography lovers will be happy to sit home with Work It, Girl bios, like “Become a Leader Like Michelle Obama” or “Blast Off Into Space Like Mae Jemison,” both by Caroline Moss, illustrated by Sinem Erkas. These books offer a great story, plus learning, plus an update on the lives featured. For the 9-to-13-year-old, a bio couldn’t be better. The child who loves to people-watch will enjoy reading “Hmong in Wisconsin” by Mai Zong Vue, even when there aren’t a lot of people around. This is a story of immigration, bravery, war, and learning in two different cultures. The young adult with a growing interest in politics will enjoy “Becoming RBG: Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s Journey to Justice” by Debbie Levy, illustrated by Whitney Gardner. It’s a graphic-novel-style biography on Justice Ginsburg, from her

earliest years to her current battles. A lottery ticket and all that comes with sudden wealth are at the root of “Jackpot” by Nic Stone. When Rico Danger finds a winning ticket and shares with “Zan” Macklin, it seems like every problem either friend has ever had might be over — but money changes things, especially relationships. Another book to look for: the coming-of-age “If Anyone Asks, Say I Died from the Heartbreaking Blues” by Philip Cioffari. It’s the story of an 18-year-old, first love, and doing what’s right. I will always recommend the “Harry Potter” series as they are just fantastic. Also, Amazon is offering the series on Amazon Stories (stories.audible.com) for free right now, if you would rather listen than read. The books are also a part of Kindle Unlimited if you subscribe to that. I also will always recommend the “Hunger Games” series, because they are amazing also! For the slightly younger set, the “Captain Underpants”, “Hello Neighbor”, “Pete the Cat”, “Diary of a Wimpy Kid”, and “Dog Man” series are all amazing choices. If you are going to be stuck at home, books are a great escape. Not only is reading beneficial to your brain, but we all need to take a break from social media and the news and just get lost in a story for a while. As always — I’ll keep doing my best to offer up the bright side of things, if y’all keep trying to see them! Please stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home if you can! If you are out and about, don’t forget your mask!

the young men and women that they have become. “Collaboration is the key to our success in keeping things fresh. We love to have guests come in and work with our students, including our other band directors within the district,” said Bulgarelli. “Both our Middle School (Mr. David Tini) and Elementary School (Mrs. Emily Brumbaugh Tini) band directors are great to work with and love to collaborate as well. We are able to frequently find time to work with each other’s kids and get the students to make music together. This year, we had over 100 elementary students attend a Friday night football game to join the Lancer Marching Band on the field. It was an awesome sight to see the future of the Lancer Marching Band on the field with our current members. Our students love the opportunity to inspire the next generation of Loyalsock musicians! Our choral program also thrives when collaborating. Our HS/MS Choir Director, Amanda Coughenour, and Elementary Choir Director, Caroline Fish, had planned an “All-District Choral Concert” for April, which would have featured over 500 students singing together on one stage! Unfortunately, the event was canceled due to the COVID-19 outbreak.”

He said in addition to working as a team, the students also are recognized on an individual basis. Every year, students are able to audition for PMEA (Pennsylvania Music Educators’ Association) District, Regional, and State level honor ensembles. These students go “above and beyond” with their individual study and advanced musicianship. This year, they have had several students qualify for the 2020 PMEA District 8 Honors Festivals. They are Harrison Frear (alto saxophone), Evelyn Griffith (soprano voice), Ian Hornberger (tuba), Emily Huskin (euphonium), David Hutchinson (trumpet), Zackary Keller (tuba), Brendan Kriner (trumpet), Collin Porter (trombone), Alejandro Quintana (violin), Andres Quintana (cello), and Grace Shaible (violin). Of those students, several also advanced to PMEA Regional Festivals; they are Harrison Frear (alto saxophone), Evelyn Griffith (soprano voice), Emily Huskin (euphonium), David Hutchinson (trumpet), Zackary Keller (tuba), Brendan Kriner (trumpet), Collin Porter (trombone). They are still awaiting the results of our potential PMEA All-State musicians, as the COVID-19 outbreak has put a temporary halt to the audition process. Bulgarelli added, “Unfortunately, due to the outbreak of COVID-19, many of

LOYALSOCK BAND our Spring plans have been canceled or postponed. Our students, families, and community members are coping with the new reality that musical events like our Spring Musical Production of ‘Pippin,’ Spring Band Concerts, and Marching Band Trip to Disney all must be put on hold. While this news is heartbreaking for all of us, we have been able to find joy and comfort in the communication and music-making that we’ve been able to experience in a remote environment. “To make the most of our current times, students are still attending band lessons via the ZOOM platform. Students still get to interact with each other and make music to the best of our ability using iPad applications like SmartMusic. Additionally, we are in the planning stages of rescheduling our marching band trip to Disney for a later date in the Fall, including the members of the Class of 2020. “This time away has been especially difficult for the students and parents of the Class of 2020. This outstanding group of young men and women have redefined what it means to be a member of our Loyalsock Band family. Through their work, leadership, passion, and love, they have challenged all of us, myself included, to be better musicians and people. world a better place to live in, and I cannot wait to see what their future holds. The Class of 2020 has changed all of us for the better, and for that, I will always be grateful. “Moments like prom, graduation, and their last senior band concert cannot be replaced. I cannot emphasize it enough, there simply is no real replacement for the incredible experience that our students have through making music together. That being said, we have learned so much about the character of our students, families, and community through these challenging times. Our time away from each other has reminded us how lucky we are to be a part of something so special. It has confirmed our belief that being a member of the Loyalsock Band was never really about coming into the school or the band room. Rather, our experience together has always been built upon the relationships we develop through our common love of music. Our students’ experience in band and music is so much more than just a class; it is a family. Although we do not know when we will be able to meet again in person, we all are optimistically looking forward to the moment when we can unite again to make music together. The hope for that day keeps us moving forward and reminds us how special it is to be able to make music in the Township.”

I know that they will change lives through their teaching! They are Ryder Haines (percussion) and David Hutchinson (trumpet). that we stress the system, rest, then grow stronger. These words are also true of dealing with adversity. Tough times can knock us down and we might need to take a step back to collect ourselves. At that point, the decision is ours to either grow stronger or be crushed by our situation. Find a purpose. Sometimes the greatest thing we find when life throws a major curveball is a purpose. Adversity can bring us back to our faith. It can remind us that our family and friends are our more valuable assets. It can help us to establish goals and give us the passion to pursue them. Life has to have meaning if it is worth being lived. Difficult times help us to appreciate the good times while at the same time reminding what it is what we are actually living for.

chance to reconnect. Those still fortunate to be working may be trying to adapt to working from a home office, or dining room table in my case. While this poses challenges, it also means that I no longer have to commute to my office, pack or buy lunch, or spend money on gas. It also means that I can use the time I have saved driving to and from work for something else such as exercising or talking with my kids. There is always an upside if you look hard enough. Grow stronger. Strength comes in many forms; physical, mental, spiritual, etc... During tough times we find out what we are made of. In fact, sometimes we find out that we were capable of so much more than we imagined. When I work with my fitness clients, I often say

COVID-19: Seeking Care and Preventing the Spread By Michael Gerst, DO Emergency Services, Susquehanna

UPMC

T

here are still many unknowns about COVID-19 and this is a time of uncertainty for everyone, including front line health care workers and public health experts. This is a complex epidemic, so we continue to see evolution in approaches to providing care with a focus on safety. No one has experienced this type of pandemic before; however, UPMC is prepared if you should need medical care. When to Seek Care for COVID-19 The symptoms of COVID-19 can range from mild to severe and are similar to other respiratory illnesses such as the flu and common cold. Symptoms of COVID-19 can appear anywhere from two days to two weeks after exposure to the virus. Symptoms include: • Fever • Cough • Shortness of breath If you suspect you have COVID-19

and aren’t having high fever or breathing problems, please call your primary care physician. Doing this from home is best for all and limits spread of any infection; if needed, your provider can guide you safely to the next care site. If you have breathing trouble, go to your emergency department – hospitals are ready to provide care. Do not go to the emergency department for a simple cough or mild fever. Testing is the only method to confirm whether a person has COVID-19. Due to limited testing resources, not everyone who wants a test can get one. Tests are being coordinated by primary care providers and infectious disease specialists so that patients exhibiting symptoms and who are at the highest risk due to exposure will be tested. Do Your Part The major concern with social interactions is that most germs are spread by hand contact; all of us touch our face hundreds of times a day without being aware of it; and viruses can persist on non-porous

MASKS ARE NOW REQUIRED FOR ALL . TRANSPORTATION CUSTOMERS AND DRIVERS. Acceptable Face Masks Homemade

Scarf, handkerchief, or other cotton material face covering. Exhalation and droplet ejection can be reduced.

Medical

Loose fitting medical masks, also refered to as surgical masks, provide barrier protection against droplets including large respiratory particles.

N95 Respirator

Tight fitting, reduces wearer’s exposure to particles including small particle aerosols and large droplets.

Before you can ride: 1. Do you have a fever higher than 100.0 degrees or new respiratory symptoms such as cough, shortness of breath, or sore throat? 2. Have you had contact with a person (live with or were within 6 ft. for a 10-30 minute period) diagnosed with COVID-19 in the past 14 days? 3. Have you been diagnosed with COVID-19 or told by a medical provider that you may or do have COVID-19?

What trips are being prioritized? Dialysis, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, IV therapeutic treatments that cannot be administered at home; high risk obstetrical care; nonemergent but urgent clinical visits; pharmacy trips; medication assisted treatment.

These measures are in accordance with PennDot recommendations and MATP requirements.

your provider, the Pennsylvania Department of Health, and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC). Wash your hands, especially before touching your eyes, nose, and mouth. Use soap and water, and wash for at least 20 seconds. Washing your hands is especially important before eating, after using the bathroom, and after blowing your nose, sneezing, or coughing. Use hand sanitizer if soap and water are unavailable. Cover your cough or sneeze or use a tissue and immediately throw it away. Remember to wash your hands. Clean and disinfect regularly used objects and surfaces. Because the virus is spread from person-to-person, it is important that you avoid close contact with others and abide by social distancing guidelines. The more you do today to stop the spread of the disease, the more lives you will save. Dr. Michael Gerst is the chairman of emergency services for UPMC in the Susquehanna region and the CELEBRATE THE SOUNDS OF LIFE medical director of the Emergency Artisan Hearing Technologies, LLC Department at UPMC Williamsport. For more information on COVID-19, visit UPMC.edu/COVID19.

surfaces (like elevator buttons and door handles) for many hours. We are fundamentally social, and it’s very difficult for us to maintain isolation. The best way to reduce spread and flatten the curve is to limit the number of people interacting and try to keep 6 feet from each other outside of our own homes. People can be infected, and the evidence suggests they can transmit the virus, a couple of days before they feel sick at all themselves. Children have milder symptoms, or even no symptoms, and yet can be infected and transmit. The best way to protect our most vulnerable fellow citizens and loved ones is to maintain the social distancing measures. We have evidence from prior pandemics going back to the 1918 influenza, and evidence from other countries now dealing with COVID-19. These measures work to reduce spread and flatten the curve. Additional ways you can lower your risk of being exposed to COVID-19: Avoid close contact with people who are sick. If you need to care for someone who is sick, take precautions such as hand hygiene and other preventative recommendations as guided by

hearing and hearing aids. What more can I say.

O

fficials of the Williamsport School District and the Board of Health ordered closing of the Henry Clay School this morning after another case of Scarlet Fever was discovered. The latest sufferer is Delores Finn, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Finn of 927 West Fourth Street, a fourth-grade pupil, Delores was in school Wednesday but was sent home, when signs of illness became apparent to her teacher. This brings to nine the number of Scarlet Fever cases at Clay School. However, other children living in the Clay district are suspected Scarlet Fever cases and it is reported that three youngsters attending St. Joseph’s

School but living in the Clay area have contracted the disease. The Finn girl’s illness would close four rooms in the building so after a conference of Dr. Paul Witmeyer, city superintendent of schools, Dr. Merl G. Colvin, city health officer and George R. Walters, Clay principal, on overall shut-down was decided until after Easter. Students will return to school, Tuesday, March 30, end of the Easter vacation. Meanwhile, parents in the Clay building are advised to keep their children from assembling in groups and to watch them for sore throat, nausea and elevation in temperature. Presence of these symptoms does not necessarily mean that the child has Scarlet Fever, but it suggests that family physicians be consulted when they are present.

This Week’s LION: Staying Positive being COVID Positive By Larry Stout

W

hat is it like to be COVID-positive? What is it like to live in the same house together with a family member who has this virus? My daughter, Elizabeth, is a healthcare worker in the greater Philadelphia area, and two weeks ago she called my wife and I with the solemn news that she had tested positive for COVID-19. Our hearts went out to her for her physical well-being, of course, but we also wondered how in the world she was going to keep distant from her husband, her five-year daughter, and their two teen foster-boys. To Elizabeth’s advantage, she is in excellent physical condition for a young lady in her mid-40s. Being a nurse, she knows all the proper protocols and is following them to the letter. For her entire life, Elizabeth has taken very good care of herself and is a health nut when it comes to food. All this considered, she is very low on the life-threatening spectrum of concern. As she likes to tell everyone who calls to cheer her up, “No, I am not dying!” That being said, this is still one nasty virus. It started for her in early April

when she had a sinus cold along with some aches and a low grad fever — typical flu symptoms. Because of her job, she went to get tested on Saturday, April 4th, and the results came back three days later — positive for COVID-19. It is impossible to tell exactly when a person actually contracts the virus, but the best guesstimate was April 1st (no fooling!) This turned out to be a good guess, because Elizabeth hit her roughest day eight days later on Thursday, April 9th, which was typical for the virus. After a few very rough days and nights of almost complete exhaustion and fatigue, she began to improve. As of April 16th, she is considered back to 70 percent of her normal energy level and with a normal temperature. She will see her doctor soon and expects to be given a thumbs up. Ironically, once she is no longer positive, Elizabeth will be able to go back to work, but the family must stay in quarantine for yet another two weeks, long enough to ensure they have not contracted the virus. The sickness has not been as hard on Elizabeth as much as keeping her distance from a very active, supercharged-atall-times five-year-old daughter. The little Princess does not understand why Mommy cannot play games with her,

everyone assumed it was cancelled, but she set up for a ZOOM meeting with her group and still led the study from her bed. She loved doing it and said it was an important part of her healing! The church is very well connected because Elizabeth’s husband was providentially hired by the church on March 1st of this year as Director of Engagement. His job was to get all the members connected with one another online. So, when Friday the 13th hit and everyone went into shutin mode, their church was all hooked up for ZOOM meetings and other networking community activities. And also, providentially, his wife Elizabeth has been the biggest beneficiary of these new technological tools. It has been a rough ride for Elizabeth and her family, to be sure, but Elizabeth is thankful for what she has learned through this time. She realizes how much she took for granted a simple hug. She has grown in her prayer life and in her trust in God. She has seen her church demonstrate what a Christian community truly looks like. It is possible to stay positive, even when you are COVID-positive. Note: for confidentiality reasons, a picture of Elizabeth is not being included, and names of family and locations have purposely been left out. Only Elizabeth’s first name has been used, which is her real name and she really is my daughter.

let her sit on her lap and read stories, and all the other fun stuff they always do together. My wife, Debbie, has been doing virtual story book reading and craft projects using Facetime, which the little one finds amusing, but it is still not the same as Mommy Time. Both foster boys are typical teens that love their electronic devices, but they are also active young men that find being confined to the home 24-7 has a tendency to make the walls shrink. As much as possible, they have been doing some outside yardwork and house maintenance type activities, which is better than nothing. Both boys are refugees from two different continents, and they have been receiving alarming news from their home countries, which has also added to the tension. The father of the house is doing his best, but in the past, he always had help. Elizabeth has a certain way to mediate and keep peace in the home. Her unavailability during these periodic meltdowns has been unfortunate. Yet, through these are challenges there have been many rays of light. The biggest help for the family has come from their home church, which has provided four meals a week, lots of encouraging cards, tons of texts, prayers, and phone calls giving mountains of emotional and spiritual support. One example was rather amusing. Elizabeth was scheduled to lead the monthly Ladies Bible Study, and

Thriving In the Resurrection

T

hese are tough days. Grief and fear have overtaken many who are hopeless. My friends, because of the resurrection, we who trust in Jesus Christ do not grieve like those who have no hope! Listen to what Paul wrote to the church in I Thessalonians 4: “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him. According to the Lord’s word, we tell you that we who are still alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will certainly not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.” Paul is calling on us to encourage one another with the power of the resurrection! Here are three things we can do to thrive, even in the midst of a pandemic: First, Focus on what you have, not on what you’ve lost. It’s OK to grieve what

you’ve lost, but if you spend too much time in grief, you’ll end up losing what you have — and that will be a double loss. You have much to be thankful for, so look for your blessings and rejoice in them! 1 Thessalonians 5:18 says, “Give thanks in all circumstances. For this is God’s will for Tim Hartzell you in Christ Jesus.” Thriving in the resurrection requires a thankful heart — and there is always something to be thankful for if you are willing to open your eyes and your heart to see it. What have you lost recently? When I asked our youth group this question, it was clear they had lost a lot: time with friends, band concerts, winter playoffs, spring sports, recitals, birthday celebrations, proms, graduations — it was a long list. Grief is natural and healthy — and all of us are mourning our losses. Have you taken the time to grieve? Doing so is healthy. Make a list of what you have lost and allow your heart to mourn. Do you remember what Jesus did when He found out that Lazarus was dead? John 11:35 says, “Jesus wept.” It’s good and holy and healthy to mourn. But as you grieve, be thankful. Alongside your list of losses, write your blessings. Doing so will take discipline, but remember, the Christian life is the disciplined life. It is why we are called disciples. God wants us to give thanks in all circumstances because doing so moves us toward overcoming —

ty! Look around, opportunities abound! In Luke 10:25-37, Jesus tells the story of the Good Samaritan — a man who took his eyes of himself and helped someone else. This may be a good time to read that story again. Then, think of people worse off than you. Make another list. If you can’t think of any, then you have been focusing too much on yourself. There is a hurting world out there — a world that needs your love and compassion and generosity. Thriving in the resurrection requires selflessness and courage. Jesus described it as “taking up your cross daily”. Paul said we must “offer our bodies as living sacrifices”. What are some ways that you can help the people on your list. These are opportunities! Begin serving others and you will thrive in the resurrection!

My friends, it won’t be easy. Without noise, you will be able to hear your thoughts. Like Peter, you may hear failure and guilt — we all have our own roosters. But as you continue to listen, you will also hear the still small voice of your Savior as He calls you toward forgiveness, restoration and purpose. It was in the silence that Peter was redeemed. Who knows, maybe God has ordained this quiet moment to do the same for you. Third, look for opportunities. Every crisis creates new opportunities, we just have to be willing to see them. Are you looking? Seeing opportunity in crisis requires selflessness and courage. In other words, stop worrying about yourself and look for people who are worse off than you. When you’re willing to see their struggle, you will see how you can make a difference — and that’s opportuni-

the LORD was not in the fire; and after the fire a still small voice. So it was, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle and went out and stood in the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a voice came to him, and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” It was in the silence that God had something to say. My friends, the world is strangely silent, but it is in the quiet that God’s still small voice can be heard. Are you willing to listen? In the silence following the death and resurrection of Jesus, Peter took some of the disciples fishing. When Jesus first found him, Peter was a professional fisherman. But when Jesus called Peter to be a “fisher of men”, Peter walked away from his boat and his nets. For the next three years Peter’s life was filled with noise: disciples, crowds, miracles, hosannas! Now, in the silence, Peter tries to create some noise with fishing. Why? Because the silence was killing him. All he could hear was his guilt — and the sound of that awful rooster? And then Jesus’ voice broke the silence. The story that follows in John 21 is beautiful and quiet and intimate — and redemptive and healing! But let’s be careful to not miss the fact that John 21 happens in the midst of silence. Today, our world is silent — at least if we will allow it. Maybe God is calling on us to listen. Take one hour and do nothing. Don’t talk to anyone. Don’t listen to anything. Turn off the noise and just sit quietly in an undistracted place and listen. Take a pen and a notepad and write down thoughts that come to your mind.

and as we overcome, the power of the resurrection is displayed in our lives. What do you still have? Make your list of things to be thankful for and you will discover something: what you have far outweighs what you have lost! If it doesn’t, then you are focusing too much on yourself and the things of this world. Lift your eyes and look around. Pray for a thankful heart. Ask God to open your eyes so that you can see your blessings! Make your list and you will begin to thrive in the resurrection. Second, Don’t waste or overlook this season of silence. We live in a noisy and busy world — if it’s quiet and still for a while, take it in. Silence helps us to hear our thoughts — and to hear from God. Jesus fasted alone for forty days in the wilderness just prior to launching His public ministry. Just before the crucifixion he spent time alone in the Garden of Gethsemane. By doing so, He demonstrated that there is value in quiet and stillness and aloneness. Read Matthew 4:111 and Matthew 26:36-36. This pandemic has created a very unusual time that may never come again. What does God want to accomplish in you? Embrace the silence. God may have something to say, or something to show you. Elijah discovered that God isn’t in the noise. In I Kings 19:11-13 we read, Then He said (to Elijah), “Go out, and stand on the mountain before the Lord.” And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore into the mountains and broke the rocks in pieces before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake; and after the earthquake a fire, but

front, side-seam pockets, and short raglan sleeves. If you’re looking for something a tad more sophisticated, check out Chico’s. They are currently featuring an easy-going Star Tie-Dye dress with front pockets and a universally flattering fit. I’d also recommend their Maxi Mini-Striped Tee dress rendered in soft cotton, again with pockets, and a V-neckline. Add a cardigan and sneakers for a laidback chic look, which your husband and kids won’t notice or appreciate, but you’ll know you look good. Most of the above brands skew a bit older, for women in their 40s and beyond. For those of you in your 20s and 30s, consider evolving the house dress idea here in the 2020s and opt for a comfy jumpsuit instead. Knit, pull-on style jumpsuits are everywhere, from mass retailers like Target and H&M to pricier fare from Madewell and independent Etsy sellers. The concept is still the same, have that one piece you pop on to be suddenly dressed for your day, whether you’re homeschooling kids, working from home, tackling home projects, or all of the above.

Woman Within, a plus-sized brand, has a whole department for indoor comfort clothing called “loungers.” Technically, these loose frocks are considered sleepwear, but there are several that would be great for a leisurely day staying indoors. Like the Ombre Zip-Front Lounger comfy-knit jersey that comes in blue, plum, or rosebud, just in time for spring. No matter the season, I’m mad for plaid, and can’t get enough of their Long Seersucker Longer, a snap-front casual dress with a shirred empire waist that comes in blue plaid, teal plaid, and magenta plaid. Another great brand for lounge dresses is Soft Surroundings. I’m currently having a very hard time not clicking “add to bag” on their Lazy Day Lounger dress. This maxi-knit comes in navy, heathered grey, and wine, and features a drawstring hoodie, roomy kangaroo pocket, dropped shoulders, and long sleeves with thumbholes, which practically screams “comfy cozy.” I also like their Penelope Dress, another hooded kneelength knit piece with a partial zip

the early part of our trout fishing season, there are chances to harvest wild morel and oyster mushrooms, find shed antlers, or dig up a few wild leeks. Truly, it is a magical time of year to be outdoors and partake of the bounties that we have. There have been multiple times while fishing a small mountain stream for trout that I have had a nearby gobbler sound off as he was searching for a hen. Much to my surprise, my outing to catch a few fish for the fry pan had turned into a scouting trip for spring gobblers. On more than one occasion, the following morning found me in pursuit of that lonely old Tom. As the season progresses and the temperatures continue to climb, the chances increase that you can locate wild

mushrooms. Yes, you need to be careful, but the morel mushroom (probably the tastiest of any mushroom and certainly the most sought after variety) and the oyster mushrooms are very easy to recognize and are a real treasure to add to a meal of freshly caught trout or a spring turkey. The wild leeks, also called “ramps,” have a mild flavor when they first appear in the spring woods and are excellent for making a pot of potato and leek soup. Their flavor does tend to get too strong as the season continues. Finding a shed antler or two is always “icing on the cake” to most spring gobbler hunters, especially when a large shed is found that confirms a big buck has made it through the hunting season and just might be around to hunt in the fall.

All of these things that you can enjoy over the next month or so, from spring gobbler hunting and mountain stream trout fishing to finding sheds or harvesting mushrooms or leeks are readily available in our surrounding counties. We are truly blessed here in Northcentral Pennsylvania to have all of these things at our disposal and large tracts of State Parks property and State Game Lands on which to pursue these interests. Particularly if you have been diligent about staying housebound recently, you will now have the opportunity to get outside, enjoy some exercise and fresh air as you take advantage of all that our surroundings have to offer. Be smart, be safe and make sure you stay healthy!

thus giving the anglers more opportunity to participate in the sport, while using wise precautions when in the outdoors, such as the acceptable habit of “social distancing.” After being “housebound” for weeks, it will be a welcome opportunity to get outside, breathe in some fresh spring air and test your hunting skills against a wily old Tom! We are fortunate, indeed, that Pennsylvania takes its hunting and fishing seriously! The Pennsylvania Youth Spring Gobbler Hunt and our statewide Gobbler Season offer multiple opportunities, and here in Northcentral Pennsylvania those opportunities are even more plentiful. I could find out and to be honest, some of the explanations and definitions got a little overwhelming, so here it is in a nutshell. Basically, the white we see in our wildlife is either the result of Piebaldism or Albinism. Piebaldism is a genetic condition, typically present at birth, and resulting in white patches or lack of color. It is a recessive genetic trait; therefore, both parents must carry the recessive gene for there to be a chance to produce piebald offspring. It is believed that likely less than one percent of the entire whitetail deer population will ever show up as piebalds. Interestingly enough, as I mentioned in

one of my past articles, this past hunting season, I know of a buck piebald and a doe piebald that were both taken within a short distance of my home. The amount of white showing can vary considerably from nearly all white to just some small patches of white. Many animals can exhibit Piebaldism, including humans and all mammals, songbirds, and even snakes. More often than not, a piebald will stand out more than normal, thus making the animal more of a target for predators, no doubt resulting in shorter life spans. Albinism is a bit different; it’s a congenital absence of any pigmentation or coloration resulting in white hair, feathers, scales,

and skin and also includes pink eyes due to a lack of pigment in the iris. The lack of pigment in the iris allows blood vessels of the retina to be visible, thus the pink eye. Albinism can occur in all animals, including humans. Again Albinism, like Piebaldism, can lead to some survival problems for the animals that have it. Alligators that have it lack the necessary protection from UV radiation, and they lack the necessary camouflage to avoid predators. Albinism is believed to be even rarer than Piebaldism. Hopefully, I’ve shed some light on the “white.” Keep your eyes open for one of those rare sightings.

animals do well maintaining their natural colors throughout the year. My own list of white or partially white animal sightings in the wild is pretty short. I once encountered a pure white, red squirrel while turkey hunting. On a couple of occasions while archery hunting, I spotted piebald or partially white deer; I even missed one with my recurve bow many years ago; over the years, since I’ve seen several more piebalds. So, when we spot one of those rare white or partially white critters, the question comes up, “What has happened that this animal is not it’s normal coloration?” I actually did a little research to see what

Ask any coach or player how Lilly Eiswerth, the forfeiture of her senior season they feel and the responses are pretty much was particularly devastating. “I still had hopes that a softball season would be universal. forward to the first game. “We’ve talked among ourselves since the season was cancelled, especially our seniors and there is a lot of sadness. For most of us we won’t be playing softball in college and looking back to last season and realizing that for many that would be their last softball game. That is really shocking and I don’t think that has set in yet. “For me it took a lot of mental strength. As a pitcher your preparation is different than the other position players. Softball is my only sport and I was really looking forward to playing this season with my teammates and coach O’Malley.” Looking ahead Sauers plans on working this summer and hopefully play some travel softball. In the fall she will be attending the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City to study to be a fashion designer. Waller’s outlook mirrors O’Malley’s regarding the tremendous disappointment experienced by the seniors.

MURRAY

“When the school first closed and the practices cancelled I met with the team and told them how proud I was of the effort they had been showing and figured we would be back on the field at some point and that I would be in touch with them. But as the weeks went by it became more doubtful that we would play. We have six seniors on the team (Luke Winner, Nate Persun, Cole Brewer, Ian Bolay, Dom Harding and, Mike Kemmerer) and my heart goes out to them. In most cases they have been working out since last November in anticipation of their senior year and now that opportunity is lost. “I’ve been trying to communicate with the guys to tell them that it is ok to experience emotions. It has been a roller coaster. I’ve been sad some days, angry, frustrated and I know they are experiencing those same emotions. I’ve been trying to have them focus on the positive. It is going to get better each day, but this is going to hurt a lot of the guys for a long time. There are

strong young men and their parents have raised some good young boys and I am proud to have the opportunity to coach them. “I’ve coached at Loyalsock and Hughesville and coming to South as a new coach the players embraced me right away. The community has been great to me in my short tenure here. I can’t thank them enough. I am looking forward to next year, but I am hoping that we can get together and play a Blue/White game at some point. After what we have been going through it is important for us to get together as a team to experience some kind of culmination to a baseball season we didn’t get the chance to experience.” Informally, some of the area coaches have discussed the potential of organizing some type of a summer league to allow their players to experience a level of competition. Whether that is a possibility remains to be seen but that ‘closed for the season’ sign now has a whole new meaning for our high school athletes.

I go for walks and just try and keep myself busy. “Looking ahead, I plan to attend Penn State University for liberal arts and media design and hopefully may try and play softball, but we will wait and see what happens.” For Eiswerth’s teammate, senior pitcher Mookie Sauers, the season’s cancellation was very upsetting. “I was really upset because we had worked so hard during the pre-season and then to learn that we wouldn’t be getting the opportunity to show how much we had improved was really sad,” Sauers related. “As a team we thought we would do well in districts and get into the state tournament and things looked good for us. Delayed Harvest

J

ensen and I have been working on a project. We have until Friday, and it is part of his new online learning. He was asked to write a short story on a recent adventure. Well done, WASD. Here’s a preview. “The water was calm but cold. Thankfully, I was wearing my new waders to keep me warm. My father and I are out for Opening Day. I use a gold and black Rooster Tail. It gives off a flash and resembles a wounded minnow. I cast upstream and retrieve and repeat. “I was reeling in, and all of a sudden, I felt a massive tug. BANG! I set the hook, and

the battle was on. My heart was racing. After five minutes, I could barely feel my arms. This monster Brown Trout wasn’t tiring. She got in the current and took me downstream. I was just about out of line and knew I had to do something. The fish was winning.” My son now has fishing on the brain, and I can’t begin to describe how great this is. The kid has asked to tag along on several recent outings. Little League Baseball is postponed, and the local authorities removed our favorite basketball court. I am extremely thankful for these opportunities to commune.

CATHERINE BURNS INSURANCE SERVICES

We are very loyal to Lycoming Creek. It is where we do 90% of our fishing. Some of our favorite spots are just a short drive or walk from the homestead. We live in the 17728, and Lycoming runs through it. There is no need to travel far when you can routinely catch Jamie fish at home. Spencer Lycoming Creek is a very unique and healthy waterway. I lost count, but I have been very fortunate to catch all types of species: Rainbow, Golden Rainbow, Brook, Brown, and even a Tiger. Most are stocked but you would be surprised of the number of wild trout. I’ve successfully landed several a small panfish, both Large and Smallmouth Bass, even a few Walleye and a small Muskie. I consider myself quite lucky. So does Jensen. Kudos to the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The PFBC is taking some unwarranted flack for opening the trout season early. Many people are quick to point fingers. Everyone is an expert. The Commission has ramped up their stocking efforts without any volunteers and limited resources. This organization should be applauded. Period. The PFBC has made some great improvements locally. They have recently doubled the area of the Delayed Harvest stretch near Powy’s. The new boundary now extends all the way to Daugherty’s

Run. This includes all of the water off of McIntyre Way. I have fished this section of Lycoming Creek my entire adult life. It’s a great stretch. Special thanks to homeowners who live in that area. Continue to respect the no trespassing signs and wave to those who open their yards. Fishermen are asked to stay in the water at all times. Please remember to pick up any trash. Do your part. There are many restrictions with any Delayed Harvest project. Anglers need to understand the rules and regulations fully. These types of waters are open to fishing year-round but must be done with artificial lures only. The use, or be in possession of, any natural bait, baitfish, fishbait, paste, and similar substances, fish eggs, or any other edible substance is STRICTLY prohibited. It is encouraged to practice catch and release, but you may keep three fish in the summer from June 15th to Labor Day. The Delayed Harvest stretch on Lycoming is also listed as a Keystone Select Stocked Trout Water. This program provides anglers the opportunity to fish for larger trout. 9,500 Browns, Rainbows, and Golden Rainbows that measure between 14 to 20 inches are distributed throughout the Commonwealth each year. The size and quality of fish around Powy’s this early season have been insane. Wash your hands, kids. Maintain your distance. Stay home if you can. Please stay safe. Stay calm and remember if you must — fish alone and away from crowds. Cheers.
