Mask Hysteria and Coroner Kiessling on Point By Jim Webb Jr.
A
tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side to everyone that reached out to me about last week’s column. You Can Kiss My Mask - The Attempted Oppression of Our Life Liberty and Happiness. The response was overwhelmingly positive, and it was great to talk with so many red, white, and blue-blooded Americans that feel like I do. There is absolutely nothing more important than our freedom blessed by God and powered by the 1st Amendment. There were also some folks that did not agree with my column, and that’s what makes our Country the greatest example of individual freedom since the beginning of organized government. We have the liberty to openly discuss, disagree, and question our government’s actions without persecution. This is exactly what our forefathers intended to protect “We the People” from our government, evolving into what the Revolutionary War was fought for. I always try to reach out to everyone that contacts me, whether it’s good, bad, or indifferent. If I missed you, my apologies — my contact information can always be found on page 4. Just a couple of final thoughts to share regarding those that were not impressed by my writing. My column had nothing to do with political affiliation and everything to do with being an American citizen. If our governor were a Republican, my words would have been the same. It had absolutely
nothing to do with not wearing a mask to protect the people around you. My thought behind You Can Kiss My Mask was that obviously I was wearing one. I think I’ve been openly clear about the great job everybody locally has done to protect one another and the importance of this since the beginning. And lastly, for those of you that would like me to become a casualty of the Coronavirus, your thoughts too are protected by the 1st Amendment. I pray you and your loved ones have great health, happiness, and peace during this most difficult time. My advice to everyone, don’t be one of Governor Wolf ’s sheeple, or anyone’s for that matter. Please question everything presented by the mainstream media or viewed on social media. You can accept nothing at FACE value. If you are leery about something or have doubts, your first instinct is usually correct. When you have doubts, ask questions, reach out to an elected official, or you can contact me any time. If I don’t know the answer, I will do my best to find out. My Father and I have always considered page 2 a watchdog for anything that just ain’t right. Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling is always on point when it comes to education and communication. He proactively goes above and beyond his job description in an attempt to address the most difficult problems. Like the heroin epidemic, drug addiction, and now COVID-19. He serves as the President of the Pennsylvania Coroners Association and is well respected around the state. My editor Steph Nordstrom and I had the opportunity to get the facts
THE TIME HAS NEVER BEEN
about the COVID-19 pandemic from Coroner Kiessling this past week. You can view the interview at webbweekly.com. I will cover the key points of our conversation with the following disclaimer, the information regarding the pandemic changes very quickly. Please remember the following information was as of Friday, April 24th. Back to the importance of questioning information provided by the government and government agencies, that’s exactly what Coroner Kiessling has been doing. When two COVID-19 deaths were supposedly confirmed in regards to residents of Lycoming County, Coroner Kiessling was quick to question the who, what and where of this report. Obviously, he was not notified, which is required under Pennsylvania’s statute. Coroner Kiessling, as well as coroners around the state, have questioned the manipulation of the Coronavirus numbers as well as the change in Pennsylvania policy when it comes to reporting them. Any death caused by an infectious disease, or that poses a public safety hazard, must be reported to the county coroner. The Department of Health with Governor Wolf ’s knowledge has changed this policy, which now allows hospital administration and doctors to directly reported deaths to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. This is just completely unacceptable for many reasons. First and foremost, it is the coroner’s responsibility to notify EMS and all those that have come in contact with the deceased that they have been exposed. By circumventing the county coroner, you’re eliminating this most important and timely aspect of controlling an infectious disease. Secondly, you are not collecting proper data to address not only the current situation

but a future pandemic. This is most crucial in making the proper decisions to protect the citizens of Lycoming County and Pennsylvania based on fact. It also slows down the ability for families to show their respect for loved ones in the event of a death. The Department of Health in Harrisburg must confirm the death and notify the hospital for the release of a loved one. This is not what you want to be doing any time, but especially during a pandemic. Now, are you ready for the really unthinkable? The procedure the Department of Health implemented is if a county coroner is not aware of a death, they must request and file a seven-page document, pay $9 and then wait for notification. This is wrong and unacceptable on so many levels I’m not even going to take the space to explain it. I will just say this is in no way in the best interest of public health and safety. I trust and respect Coroner Charles Kiessling; he will do everything in his power to protect and serve the citizens of Lycoming County. This, to me, is a smoking gun example of the attempted manipulation of the numbers in regard to COVID-19, as well as an attempt to remove authority from a locally elected official. Thanks to the voice of Coroner Kiessling, for and standing up for what is best for We the People, the two deaths originally listed under Lycoming County have been removed, as have 228 deaths statewide. A closing fact — Lycoming County has more deaths (3) by suicide related to the stress of COVID-19 than the actual virus (0). These prompted by the Department of Heath’s closure of what they deemed elective medical procedures and offices. Please do everything to stay safe, be healthy, and look out for one another. God Bless America.

How to Wear and Take Care of a Mask
I
t’s another week of the shutdown. How are y’all holding up? Doin’ OK? Keeping safe and happy? I know, it’s starting to get rough. People are frustrated and cranky and trying their best to keep everything together. Especially those that are spending far more time at home than they ever imagined. I’m still going to work every day, and even I am suffering from a bit of cabin fever. So, what’s the bright side this week? It’s the helpers like Flo on the cover. There are so many amazing people in the area that are supporting and helping others. From making masks to making signs to offer a boost to healthcare and other frontline workers. Restaurants are sending food to the hospitals for healthcare workers. People are sending snacks and coffee to law enforcement agencies to encourage them and remind them that they are appreciated. So, for this week, let’s appreciate the helpers. The ones that are looking at
what they have to offer and how that can help someone else, or make their Steph lives easier, or make Nordstrom them smile. I have actually known Florence and her daughter Nicole for a long time. Nicole and I were friends during elementary and some of junior high school before I moved out of the Jersey Shore School District. It makes my heart happy to see how they are working to help people just because they can. Nicole messaged me this week with a great article suggestion since we are focusing on masks on the cover this week. She suggested that we pass along information regarding proper mask safety. I thought this was a great idea, especially since I keep seeing people wearing masks inappropriately. So, off to the interwebz and CDC, I went to gather the facts. According to the CDC:
Cloth face coverings should: • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face • be secured with ties or ear loops • include multiple layers of fabric • allow for breathing without restriction • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape It should also be noted that the mask should cover your NOSE AND MOUTH. I know it’s not super comfortable and impedes breathing a bit, but the mask does zero good if it doesn’t cover both! The CDC recommends wearing cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies), especially in areas of significant community-based transmission. They also advise the use of simple cloth face coverings to slow the spread of the virus and help people who may have the virus and do not know it from transmitting it to others. Cloth face coverings fashioned from household items or made at home from common materials at low cost can be used as an

Should cloth face coverings be washed or otherwise cleaned regularly? How regularly? — Yes. They should be routinely washed, depending on the frequency of use. How does one safely sterilize/clean a cloth face covering? — A washing machine should suffice in properly washing a face covering. How does one safely remove a used cloth face covering? — Individuals should be careful not to touch their eyes, nose, and mouth when removing their face covering and wash hands immediately after removing. Remove masks by the ear loops or back ties without touching the front of the mask. I hope this helps y’all navigate some of the mask confusion. Next week, we are going to talk movie and TV suggestions, because if we are still stuck inside, we may as well get the most out of our streaming services. As always — I’ll keep doing my best to offer up the bright side of things if y’all keep trying to see them! Please stay safe, stay healthy, and stay home if you can! additional, voluntary public health measure. Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated, or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance. The cloth face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators. Those are critical supplies that must continue to be reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders, as recommended by current CDC guidance. The CDC’s website also has a couple of tutorials on how to make a mask at home. There are both sew, and no-sew options and use materials most can find around the house. I actually made one of the no-sew ones from an adorable shirt that I absolutely loved but accidentally shrunk, a couple of hair ties, and a few safety pins. (But shout-out to Josie at It’s My Party Store for the ones that she delivered to the Webb Weekly office!) They also offered up some guidance on some FAQ:

or local seamstresses, Florence Welshans, and her daughter, Nicole Warner, making masks to help the community is a family affair. For Welshans, owner of Flo’s Sewing, Alterations, and Embroidery located outside of Jersey Shore, it was seeing the lack of masks available to those that truly needed them that motivated her to take action. “When proms and weddings began to get canceled, I knew there would be a need for more masks.” Welshans has been in the business of sewing for over 35 years, but she has been sewing her whole life. Before starting her own business, she worked at several local bridal stores over the past 22 years doing alterations to wedding gowns, prom dresses, bridesmaids’ dresses, and other formal wear. She was already set up with materials and equipment, but making personal protective masks was not something that she had done in the past. So, she turned to the internet and taught herself how to make them by watching videos online. “It makes me feel good to help somebody. I’m not doing this to make money. I also want to mention that
lots of area seamstresses in the area are stepping up to help.” Welshans said her husband, as well as her good friend, Tanya Brewer, have also helped quite a lot with the project. Welshans does all of this while being allergic to dyes in fabric and ink but powers through making hundreds of masks even though she must wear a mask herself while working. Her masks have been sent all over, including Florida, Colorado, Washington State, and Illinois. Not to mention all over the region for workers at places such as Penn State University, Geisinger Jersey Shore Hospital, and nursing homes, and the Tiadaghton Police. She has also provided many masks to professional truck drivers that work for companies such as Fed Ex, Walmart, and UPS. “I send them to whoever needs them.” Her daughter, Nicole Warner, also wanted to get involved. Warner’s regular full-time job is as a librarian for Penn College, but she is also an avid seamstress herself and regularly attended craft fares. In addition, she belongs to many sewing groups on Facebook. When the pandemic began to escalate, she noticed that while many people were sewing masks for healthcare workers, there was

out. As of press time, she had made over 2,100 masks. Nicole Warner can be reached at 570971-6076 or on Facebook under Coolie’s Quirky Quilts & More. While the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) now recommend everyone wear a face mask in public to help slow the spread of COVID-19, they also make recommendations both for the construction of home-made masks as well as how to wear any mask. According to the CDC: Cloth face coverings should— • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face • be secured with ties or ear loops • include multiple layers of fabric • allow for breathing without restriction • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape In addition, the CDC warns not to place cloth face coverings on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, and people not capable of removing the mask themselves. Also, cloth face coverings should be washed regularly, and people should be careful not to touch their face or eyes when removing their face mask.

very little being done for people that were deemed “essential” workers that still had to go into their job on a daily basis and were put at risk for infection. “I saw a lot of conflicting information online regarding the effectiveness of creating home-made masks. So decided to look into it.” Warner said. After quite a lot of research, she moved forward to sew masks for those in need. “I put a post on Facebook that was shared quite a bit and began getting contacted for orders.” Warner makes masks for family, friends, and people in the community at no charge. Warner’s husband Phil, a web developer at Penn College, and her two children, Hunter, 11, and Booker, 6, also are very involved. “For my kids, it’s sort of a Home Ec. project; they help with things like ironing and cutting the elastic. My husband, Phil, makes mask extenders, which help to keep the elastic on the masks from rubbing your skin by 3D printing them.” said Warner. Florence also gets to spend time with Hunter and Booker as they Facetime her while she stitches away. While she does not charge a fee, Welshans and Warner will accept donations to help pay for more materials. She noted that ‘angels’ have been dropping off fabric, and elastic and that the Susquehanna Quilt Guild has been supplying supplies as well. She even had someone donate a roll of pennies to help

he reception for the Liberty Bell last evening was a complete success, unmarred by any occurrences that detracted from the pleasure of the occasion. The train arrived at the
Park Hotel station at 6:15 o’clock and remained just 15 minutes. In this time all present had ample opportunity of gazing upon one of the nation’s proudest possessions. A great deal of enthusiasm was created and the passage of the special was witnessed by a larger crowd than ever before
assembled in this city to greet a similar train. It is not placing the estimate too high to state that fully 15,000 people were gathered along the line of the Pennsylvania Railroad within the city limits. At 5:50 o’clock the line of march was taken up. The entire police force in all the glory of entire new uniforms, which they wore for the first time, headed the column, followed by the Fisk Military Band. At 6:15 o’clock the train pulled into the station amid ringing cheers and the boom of a light gun. The crowd
that greeted it was a dense one, the people good naturedly jostling each other in their efforts to get a nearer view. In the flat car containing the bell stood the escort, together with City Solicitor, N.M. Edwards, ex-District Attorney C.J. Riley, ex-Mayor F.H. Keller and F.E. Embick, The Williamsport committee that accompanied the special from Harrisburg, Almost immediately upon stoppage of the train, Mayor Elliot introduced Mayor Stuart of Philadelphia and the latter made a brief speech.

or those who suffer from seasonal allergies, you know that this time of year can be a challenge. Flowers, trees, and grasses are in bloom and growing which means pollen and other allergens are in the air. In the U.S., an estimated 18 million adults have hay fever or allergic rhinitis, caused by pollens, weeds, grasses, and molds. Other people may have environmental allergies to things like animals and dust mites. Did you know your allergies change and this year may be the first you experience symptoms? Is It Allergies? It can be challenging determining if the symptoms you’re experiencing are allergies or something else. Typical symptoms associated with allergies include: • cough from postnasal drip • itchy and watery eyes • nasal congestion • sneezing • stuffy or runny nose • scratchy or sore throat • throat clearing These symptoms are also often associated with the common cold and flu and may have you overly concerned this year because of the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19), especially if you have never had allergies before. While some symptoms of the coronavirus overlap with allergies, there are several differences. The nasal symptoms such
as a runny nose and sinus congestion aren’t prevalent symptoms of COVID-19, and allergies do not usually cause a fever, as is found with coronavirus or the flu. If you’re experiencing symptoms, it’s important to talk to your doctor who can help you determine the next steps for treatment. What Causes You to Develop Allergies? Allergies can develop at any point in a person’s life. Usually, allergies first appear early in life and become a lifelong issue. However, allergies can start unexpectedly as an adult. A family history of allergies puts you at a higher risk of developing allergies some time in your life. Allergies develop when your body thinks a substance such as animal hair, pollen, or mold is harmful. That substance awakens your immune system to release a chemical called histamine, which leads to your allergy symptoms. As you age, your immune system may start to weaken, so your response to an allergen also weakens. Repeated exposure can also cause your immune system to overreact. If you develop allergies as an adult, you may have had slight symptoms throughout your life, but an event such as a move or a new pet triggered your immune system to respond. Are these Symptoms Allergies? If you believe you have developed allergies, the first thing you can try is over-thecounter antihistamines to help control your symptoms. It is also a good idea to avoid the things you believe you are allergic to until you can be seen by an allergist. An allergist can perform allergy testing to
determine if you have allergies and exactly what is triggering your allergy symptoms. If testing confirms you have allergies, you can work with your doctor to develop a personalized treatment plan. How Are Allergies Treated? The first step is to avoid the things you are allergic to and try over-the-counter antihistamines. If that doesn’t work, your doctor may recommend one or more of the following options: Prescription antihistamines — Most antihistamines are now over the counter, but some are still only available by prescription. Nasal sprays — Medications that reduce the swelling in your nose, which cause a stuffy, runny, and itchy nose. Inhalers — Medications inhaled into the lungs that open your airways. Inhalers can

The First 100 Days By Mayor Derek Slaughter
T
he first 100 days have been a roller coaster. Our administration was off to a good start — accomplishing some of our initial goals of getting our team in place, getting the City management processes and financial records in order, and working with City Council to formulate a long-range strategic plan for City government. Those accomplishments would be important under normal circumstances, but are more crucial now as we work
our way through the new reality we face. This pandemic has changed plans for all of our citizens as well as for Williamsport. I wake up daily, concerned about the impact COVID-19 is having on every aspect of our community. The first priority now is to find ways that the city can mitigate the hardships everyday citizens are experiencing because of this historic worldwide health crisis. As a former member of Council, I know it is important to listen to City Council’s ideas and points of view. If

City Council and I do not always see eye-to-eye, that does not mean we are not looking in the same direction. There is never just one way of doing something. As a mayoral candidate, I emphasized working on our financial records, fundamental management, and working with realistic budgets. Every day, as I make decisions, I still have these as a primary focus. We have made positive strides in updating our daily administrative functions. Often, the work is behind the scenes, so the average citizen does not always know what has been updated or improved. It is not flashy work. Every day we work on creating a better government. This will always be my motivation I want every citizen and business of Williamsport to know that our city is resilient, and we will get through these tough times. Just like every citizen and business is now doing, the city is evaluating how to reduce expenses, conserve resources and continue its mission to serve the public. Where, in the past, the city may have contracted for outside services, we will look to do much of our work in-house using the professionals and experienced employees that we have. We will try to balance between the need to cut expenses and to not “cut corners” to do our work. In response to the needs of the greater community, I created the Mayor’s

board to work on strengthening our community and economy even before the pandemic hit us; this crisis has pushed that to the forefront. The public will be invited to participate in broad discussions about how to expand our mercantile, manufacturing and service industry base. Again, there is no one way to do something. What ultimately matters are being effective and building resilience. During this health crisis, we are in daily contact with local, county, and state health officials to ensure Williamsport is as prepared as we can
be. We monitor the confirmed cases both here in Lycoming County and throughout the Commonwealth. I speak with and monitor what other mayors and municipalities are doing. If we see something that works somewhere else, we will evaluate it to see if it is applicable for Williamsport. Because we implemented timely policies and procedures to keep our employees and residents safe and healthy, we are in a stronger position to have a more vigorous restart of our economy. We are following the guidance of trained and competent professionals
in public health and safety. Keeping our population healthy now will be the key to regaining our economic strength later. I firmly believe that this is how we emerge out of this crisis with the best outcome for our city. The response from our community has been incredible. I want to thank every person and organization who has stepped up during this time to offer their support and resources. These collective efforts have been nothing short of heroic and show the true resolve of Williamsport. Without a doubt, COVID has changed the initial work of our administration. Nevertheless, our commitment to the
taxpayers and citizens of Williamsport remains the same. I ask that everyone remain calm during these challenging times. Follow the guidelines outlined by the state and federal governments’ health and safety experts. Together, we will get through this. My administration is working diligently to ensure we are prepared both now and for the long-term. Contact my office with any questions or concerns. Sign up for our new texting alert system, TEXT WILLIAMSPORT, by texting “Hello” to 855.922.2818 in order to receive updates. Stay calm. Stay safe. Stay home. And most importantly, stay healthy.

full stop,” he responded forcefully. He noted that in the past, the Voter Services office counted ballots long into the night because of the absentee ballots. Rest assured, every ballot gets counted in every election. Now is the time to begin to act on this. The completed application must be received by the county office by 5:00 p.m. on May 26th. The voted ballot must be received by the county election office by 8:00 p.m. on June 2nd. A late application will NOT be accepted, even if it was postmarked before the deadline. So, don’t wait till the last minute. Put down your Webb Weekly, go to your computer or electronic device and log unto lyco.org and get started on receiving your mail-in ballot. he worst part of the The Great 2020 COVID-19 Shutdown is that we are living through a historic moment in real time. Decades from now, history books (or tablets, or whatever) will note how it slowly built through a concern to a genuine emergency to the point that schools and businesses began to shut down on Friday the 13th in March, and that it began to end on … Yes, see, that is the problem, we don’t yet see the end. We are living in the day-to-day uncertainty of “when are we going to be able to go back to work, go back to church, to restaurants, to the Y, to whatever?” Instead of focusing on what we cannot do, we should keep in mind our civic duties which we can do such as completing our census requirement and also fulfilling our obligation to vote. Hopefully, everyone is aware that the Pennsylvania Primary has been postponed to June 2nd. But, like everything else these days, things are not what they were in the not so very recent past. We need to think about June 2nd right now. First of all, Forrest Lehman, Lycoming County Director of Elections and Registration, strongly encourages everyone to consider voting by mail. Given that the vast majority of poll workers are in the highest risk age category, the fewer voters that physically go to the polls, the better.
Pennsylvania Act 77, which was passed last year, enables everyone to be able to submit a mail-in ballot. In the past, it was necessary to apply for an absentee ballot to vote by mail, and there were restrictions on who qualified for this option. In a logic that is only understood by Pennsylvania lawmakers, it is still possible to apply for an absentee ballot, and be denied, however, ANY registered voted in Pennsylvania can apply for a mail-in and be accepted. (Translation: forget about the absentee ballot, just apply for a mail-in one). It is incredibly easy. Simply go to the county website, lyco.org, and click on “Departments” and drop down to “Voter Services.” Scroll down to “Information for Voters” and the second item is “Apply for an Absentee Ballot or Mail-In Ballot Online.” Fill out the form, it is very simple and only takes a couple of minutes. From here, the Voter Services Office will process your application and if you are indeed a registered voter in Lycoming County, they will send you a mail-in ballot. It will come with a special envelope that you need to use when returning the ballot. This is very important! You MUST use this envelope. It has a unique barcode on the envelope which will be scanned when your ballot is received back by the Voter Services Office. If you do not use that envelope, your ballot will not be accepted. The reason for these controls is to ensure voter security. There has been a lot of
rhetoric nationally about voter fraud from both the Democrat and Republican Party, but rest assured area voters, this is not going to happen here! The voter is registered with the Voter Services, and the barcode is matched to that voter. This ensures that the person cannot go to the polls and try to vote again. It also ensures that the person cannot request another mail-in ballot. Further, the actual content of the vote is never identified with the voter. Another hangup folks have had in the past is the myth that absentee ballots are not counted. Director Leyman is a gentle and meek man, but when this subject comes up, so does his emotional level. In responding to a question at a recent County Commissioners meeting, Forrest Leyman was adamant. “Every single ballot is counted,

Volume Mascara. Combine voluminous lashes with a peach lipstick to boost the natural colors and contours of your face, especially if you are going sans foundation. In fact, regardless of whatever no-makeup makeup you use, a dash of lipstick will instantly add some color to your look and brighten your features. My laptop camera lighting is not the best, and, in some of my first online meetings, I appeared as a cross between a zombie and a ghost. Now I use Marc Jacobs’ Beauty New Nudes Sheer Gel Lipstick from Sephora. In non-traditional nude lip shades like “spiced ginger” and “terracotta pink,” I
only look half-dead instead of fully dead on screen. You can, of course, go with a more glamorous lip for online meetings, but for the au natural look, go with some sort of nude-tone color. Speaking of nude-tones, a swift swipe of eye shadow in a blush or beige shade will give you a quick no-makeup makeup look. A bit of barely-there color has enough boost and contour to your eyelids to look like you’ve gotten plenty of sleep. Bareminerals Gen Nude eyeshadow palette has six shadows to see you through self-isolation into summer. This palette can also be used on cheeks and lips. Just a few quick dabs, and you’re
all set for that 8 a.m. meeting, even if you kept waking up from anxiety nightmares every few hours the night before. As with any makeup, skin prep is key. While you may have rolled back your regular beauty routine during quarantine, you should still be moisturizing and treating your skin with care. So, SPF up for those nature walks, be sure to exfoliate, and hydrate. The smoother and healthier your skin, the less product you’ll need. The less product you use, the more likely you’ll be able to achieve the effect of a natural makeup, and your colleagues and friends will be none-the-wiser.

Andrea’s Home Cookin…
Quarantine Snackin’
O
K, so honest show of hands. Who is doing a lot of quarantine snackin’? Is it because you are bored? Stressed? Sad? Food makes people happy, and it gives us something to look forward to. Not much to look forward to nowadays, but, if you give yourself something to look forward to, then it can help change your attitude! I used to look forward to each
weekend. There was always something planned. We went out with our friend crew every weekend for dinner. It was a weekend tradition! Church was a weekend tradition. Sunday family night, when we gather in the living room as a family, watch “AFV,” eat nachos and cheese, and start the week out by relaxing Sunday night together, is tradition. Now, we still do this, and it’s something we all look forward to, especially now

because it’s one thing in our life that DIDN’T have to change. I’m thankful for that. It’s the little things like having a surprise picnic outside for your kids or Facetimeing with your friends and family. Andrea Parading to their house McElroy to say hello from afar. Planning a game night or a special meal. Get creative and plan something that makes you and your family happy. A lot of people on social media loved the two-week meal ideas, so if I can help in any way, I am giving you another two weeks of meals I planned for my family starting next week. This has been great for us with grocery shopping only every ten days. I put a game night in there. I have a recipe for homemade soft pretzels I’ve been dying to try with a cheese dip, then thought up fun game night dinner options we can play and eat at the same time. My kids are so excited for Wednesday night, and I am too! Something we, as a family, can look forward to. We have been loving our game nights! Trouble, Operation,
Memory and Jenga are a few new ones we just added to our collection. Phew! Does Trouble get heated or what! Oh my gosh we have a ball. My kids will remember quarantine when mom let us play games at dinner and ate yummy food while we played on a weeknight! Hey, I workout, a lot. So, bring on the chicken nachos, soft pretzels and who knows what else I’ll come up with. I mean, I’m serving a salad with it, so it’s all about balance, right? Plan your special night! Movie night with theater foods? Game night with appetizers? Indoor camp out where you tell stories, read books, and make indoor s’mores? Put a tent up if you have one! There are so many ideas you can come up with. This quarantine is what you make it, and I thank God every day for giving my little family the happiness of being home, every day. We enjoy fun little snacks like these “Skinny Frozen Bites” that are guilt free and something to put a little extra joy in your days ahead. 2 Week Meal Plan • Friday & Saturday Nights – Take out to support local businesses • Sunday – Omelets & Fresh Fruit

the language we use when we create insults as he does about the targets of those japes; here, you’ll learn about the different kinds of insults and how delivery is important. Battistella then goes on to include a glossary of common terms and a how-to for insults which (who knew?) actually have structure and meaning that an English teacher would be proud of. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself burning with a brand-new eighteenthcentury vocabulary. Don’t be surprised if you laugh, either, because, as for “Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels,” there’s a lot of good to say about it.

ou’ve got a few things to say about that guy in the White House. If not now, well, you’ve said a few things about other guys in the White House over the years – much of it civil, but some of it was inappropriate for polite society. And in “Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels” by Edwin L. Battistella, you’re in good company. Was there ever a time when people didn’t verbally poke one another? Probably not. Says Battistella, in times past, insulting was a combat sport of lips and minds, like a Greek-and-Roman “Yo Mama” war of words. With that history of zingers and arrows in mind, it’s no surprise that American Presidents have heard their share. Insults, says Battistella, take many forms but for all of them, disrespect and demeaning are key. In politics, especially,
neutral words can take on a tone of deep insult, some names practically scream to be zinged, flaws (real or perceived) could be highlighted, and insulters should gets bonus points for alliteration. Old language can also resurface as a brandnew burn, when words just come back around to insult anew. “Dotard,” anyone? Sticks, stones, and snowflakes aside, then, does an insult matter? Yes, says Battistella: “How we insult presidents tells us about the presidents, but it also tells us about the American nation’s anxieties and aspirations.” And that White House guy gets it on the chin. Though he was really quite popular, for example, George Washington took his share of insults, and he took them to heart. Abraham Lincoln, beloved now, was called an “imbecile” in his day. Alice Roosevelt Longworth had very little good to say about her cousin-in-law, Franklin. Harry Truman was infamously rankled by an insult to his daughter; JFK and Bill Clinton were both called “spoiled”; several post-World-War-II presidents have been verbally compared to Hitler; Margaret Thatcher had a uniquelyBritish opinion about Ronald Reagan,
and what was said about Richard Nixon, well, let’s just say that it’s in this book... In this time of partisan politics and divisiveness, you’ve probably said some things. You probably have some opinions. A few of them may be rather peppery, so what you need is a little sprinkle of “Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels.” And that’s about what you’ll get: a small but nicely-balanced, nonpartisan selection of 45-plus brief, quick-toread entries and accompanying sidebars that are gently humorous, historical, and – most surprisingly – not entirely focused on politics. Nope, author Edwin L. Battistella writes just as much about

T
he corona virus pandemic, along with all of its resultant restrictions and behavioral guidelines, doesn’t seem to be going away any time soon. As the Federal, State and local governmental agencies scramble to come up with a vaccine and control the current spread of the virus, we, as individuals, can do little outside of our own small world regarding the worldwide, countrywide or statewide spread. We can only do what is best for us an individual or what is best for our “at home” family unit. Beyond that, we can only hope that the government will do “the right things” – somewhat of a scary thought! So, let’s focus today on what we can do to improve things within our own household to better our lives and help insure our own and our family’s safety and health. Beyond the “social distancing” and stay-at-home guidelines, there are a lot of things we can do to use this unprecedented time at home in a wise fashion. Make or update an inventory of your more important or costly sporting equipment. Gun theft is an all too common occurrence these days. Whether it occurs at your residence, while traveling on a hunting trip or when attending a sporting event, having the stolen item in your detailed inventory will go a long way toward recovering it. Firearm listing should include serial number, make and model, barrel length, caliber or gauge, and any custom or distinguishing features. Date, place and price of purchase can also be helpful. Any other costly sporting gear, such as pricier fishing,

camping or photography items can also be included in the inventory, along with their detailed description in case of an insurance claim or attempt to recover from having been stolen. Photographs can be essential to include, along with a photograph of any receipt or bill of sale. The inventory can be kept as a printed document or as a digital file and kept at your home in a place away from where your firearms are kept. A second copy of the inventory should be kept in a safe deposit box or with a trusted friend or relative. We have certainly all heard the saying that “practice makes perfect.” With this in mind, there are numerous activities we can engage in during this stay at home time to better our performances in the things we enjoy doing. “Dry practice” with firearm handling will go a long way to being smoother and more proficient, as well as improve your accuracy. For shotgunners, mounting your shotgun from the ready position to the shooting position over and over will create muscle memory and a much smoother final mount, which will result in greater accuracy. A friend of mine once asked Vincent Hancock, a world-famous Olympic shotgun shooter, if he practices dry mounting his shotgun at home and, if so, how many times. His response was that he “does it every single day and does so 100 times per day.” That is what makes him the champion that he is. For handgunners who are interested in maintaining proficiency at the range in presenting and aiming your handgun at targets, dry practice is essential and can be safely practiced at home. After properly clearing the
from brushing up on your calling techniques! Box calls and slate calls seem to be the easiest for most hunters to use, with the mouth calls being the more difficult. But, practicing with each of these calls will help your rhythm, volume control and ability to duplicate the varied sounds that live turkeys make. You may be banished to the basement by your out-ofpatience spouse, or asked to take a hike to the nearest park or woodlot, but dedicating time to work on your calling technique with various calls will result in greater success when actually hunting. Hopefully, in the not-too-distant future, the stay at home restrictions will be lifted and we will find ourselves back at work with little time to do the things that have been suggested, but, in the meantime, use your time wisely, and in the interim, be safe, be smart and stay healthy!

Rainbow actually came from a single fish, a female rainbow trout, with a genetic mutation that resulted in a mixed golden and normal rainbow coloration. That mutation took place in a West Virginia trout hatchery in 1954 and over the years through selective breeding an all Golden Rainbow Trout was developed. In the 60s Pennsylvania and some other states hybridized the pure strain of the West Virginia Golden Trout with normal rainbows and produced the “Palomino Trout”. The Palomino was produced and stocked for a time in Pennsylvania; it was a paler color and not the same as today’s Golden Rainbow Trout. Over the years the palomino was selectively bred back to what

we now call the Golden Rainbow trout with an obvious golden, yellow coloration and pink in the fins and a reddish stripe down the side. In an attempt to encourage more participation in trout fishing the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission has begun raising more and stocking more Golden Rainbows. In 2019 nearly 10,000 were stocked but in 2020 about 13,000 will be stocked; that’s an increase of about 40 percent. The commission is stocking “trophy sized” trout-fish of 14-20 inches for the most part. By the way the Pennsylvania state record for a Golden Rainbow is one of 13 pounds. There is no doubt the Golden Rainbow
will get more attention; trust me, you won’t have any trouble seeing one that has been stocked-they stand out like a sore thumb. That they stand out so much is part of the problem. Fishermen tend to target them once spotted and that means they are getting bombarded with everything you can throw at them so it’s no wonder they can become very wary. In addition, they also become the target of predators like Great Blue Herons, Ospreys, Eagles or any other critter or human looking for a big, golden trout. What’s interesting is the Golden Rainbow has been known to mutate and produce a “blue” trout. Instead of “Going for the gold” we may be “Singing the blues” some day.

Brook trout are native to Pennsylvania but unless you are fishing one of our smaller native trout streams most of the brookies that are being caught are hatchery raised and stocked. Brown trout were brought here from Germany and are raised in our hatcheries and stocked every year. Some Browns do hold over and even reproduce in some of our better streams. Rainbows are a western state species that we raise and stock now more than ever before. Rainbows seldom hold over or reproduce in our streams. The Golden Rainbow, while not as abundant, has certainly been getting its share of attention lately but let’s first take a closer look at its history. The Golden

Answers Your Real Estate Questions THIS WEEK:
REAL ESTATE VALUES DURING COVID-19 with Diane Shultz, Realtor
Mobile: 570-772-4470 dshultz@wheresthathome.com
Q: A:
How do you think home values will be affected by the Covid-19 Pandemic?
Q: A:
Do you think homes will be harder to sell or stay on the market longer?
Q: A:
Will buyers still be able to get loans for a home and what kind of a credit score will I need to buy a home?
If this Pandemic holds true to previous Pandemics, although sales and listings have come to all but a complete stop, there should hopefully, be minimal (if any) decrease in the values of properties once things open back up. However, times are anything but normal and there is a definite amount of uncertainty.
I am optimistic when Real Estate fully resumes, initially there will be a surge in sales from the back log of clients that have been patiently waiting to find that perfect home, which in turn, could potentially be the perfect time for sellers to get those homes on the market.
After speaking with both smaller and larger lenders, it seems for the time being, the criteria and credit scores needed to purchase a home are more stringent than before the Covid-19 Pandemic hit. However, the general consensus is that this criteria should relax once the market gets up and running again. Lenders have expressed they have different products that could be structured around a buyer’s circumstances on a case by case basis, which I would be happy to assist buyers with. The type of financing a buyer would apply for depends on the credit score needed. For instance, one particular program is a Conventional Loan, which would require a credit score of 620 or higher. If you’re interested in a Government backed loan such as FHA, VA or USDA, the minimum credit score is between 640 and 660.

Series may even be possible. MLB’s attempt to play a season has included several suggested circumstances, with most including play at neutral site locations in Florida and Arizona, without fans in attendance. Recent Associated Press reports have indicated that Commissioner Rob Manfred and MLB are pushing forward their plan to eliminate 42 Minor League teams at the conclusion of the 2020 season — if there even is one. The Williamsport Crosscutters and most of their NYPEN League brethren are left wondering what the future may hold in store. The NFL conducted their annual player draft last week under most unusual surroundings, but at least it was real. College sports are between a rock and a hard place. Financially, football is the ‘cash cow’ upon which most collegiate sports depend. They all need football, but will fans be willing to pay their money and turn out in large numbers to watch the games? We are fortunate to live in an area that provides numerous outdoor recreational opportunities. There are streams, mountains, hiking trails, and community parks that are real and not ‘virtual’ for us to enjoy. Indeed, we all want to get back to normal as soon as possible, but when lining up in those potential May 8 starting blocks, it may best to be like the tortuous and not the hare. Our beloved sports will return, and when they do, they will have an even greater meaning and importance in or lives.

Sadly, some who shouldn’t have entered the race in the first place, will succumb to the riggers and be left in the dust. In ‘reality,’ I don’t own rose-colored glasses, a crystal ball, or an Ouija board. I do have in my possession a glass that is literally half-full. It was a gift from some co-workers a few years back intended as a joke (I think) in deference of my sometimes looking at things from the half-empty viewpoint. Although folks don’t like the circumstances, we are in most have been able to retain a degree of optimism. There have been some wonderful, heartwarming stories that have uplifted the spirit of human kindness. There have been ‘virtual’ birthday parties, celebrations, meetings, and sporting events that lack the camaraderie we all seek but ‘have been better than nothing.’ But referencing Webster’s ‘virtual’ definition, what will the immediate sporting world look like once things begin to get back to a near-normal? The professional sporting world is on hold with the likelihood of additional cancellations waiting. The high school spring sports season is ancient history. The South Williamsport Lions Club has canceled its annual District IV football showcase. Little League International has been holding to a May 11 ‘wait and see’ scenario with local leagues left in limbo regarding any kind of 2020 season; not to speculate if a 2020 Little League World

I took half of Trump’s money and purchased a brand new setup. I was determined to finally catch a damn fish on a stupid fly rod. Long story short — I am up to 22 — mass hysteria. Dogs and cats are most definitely living together. My friends have been great with this new challenge. I reached out to several, and they have been very supportive. Many of the purists have congratulated me on my successes. Beginners luck? Perhaps. It has been a great run. But the spin rod is still in the car. Eric Reeder gave me a quick crash course on beaded nymphing along Lycoming.
