To the Greater Williamsport Community: Since 1947, the Little League® World Series has been the hallmark of our summers here in our iconic hometown. We’ve welcomed countless people to our community, whether as guests for two weeks in August or by watching on ESPN around the world, and have shown them the charm, hospitality, generosity, and everything that makes us all proud to call the greater Williamsport area our home. We are as heartbroken as you and those millions that we won’t be able to provide the memories and cherished lifetime experiences to 16 Little League Baseball® Regional Champions this year. We are saddened, as well, that the annual reunion of many friends, volunteers, and fans that occurs here each summer, will have to wait another year.

While we all feel the pain of this hideous pandemic and the severe outcomes it has caused, we also want to offer a firm commitment to our community and a sense of optimism for tomorrow. The Little League World Series isn’t going anywhere and will be ready to welcome the world next summer, stronger than ever.

Call 570-326-9322

After exhausting all possible options to host the World Series this August, including postponement, we came to the conclusion that because of the significant public health uncertainty that will certainly still exist several months from now, and with direction from our Governor and Secretary of Health, it would be impossible and irresponsible to try and bring hundreds of thousands of people from eight countries and throughout the United States to our valley. Additionally, the inability to play regional qualifying tournaments coupled with direction from federal officials regarding the complexity of international travel restrictions and immigration requirements has made it virtually impossible. For that, we are extremely disappointed; not just because our decision denies 16 teams of children this treasured experience, but also because of the significant economic consequences to many of our area businesses and organizations who’ve supported us so strongly in the past. Regrettably, we had no choice, but it doesn’t make it hurt any less.

To help us through this tumultuous time, we can imagine looking forward to the young, and the young at heart, sliding down the hill, big smiles, loud cheers ,and the new friendships that will be made when we can get together again and celebrate the best of youth sports next season. In the meantime, from all of us at Little League Headquarters in South Williamsport and the International Board of Directors, please stay safe; please accept our good wishes for your families and those around you; and please know that we share your deep disappointment.

a Mother’s Day focused on Mom’s love of books an ideal and unique way to spend the day. Kids can write Mom their own books, and Dad can help put them together. Dads can visit rare bookstores and look for original copies of Mom’s favorite books that she might not find elsewhere. The Nature Lover Fishing and other outdoor activities might have a reputation as predominantly male hobbies, but studies show that’s not really the case. A 2016 report from the Outdoor Foundation found that 46 percent of people who participated in outdoor activities were women. If Mom is a nature enthusiast, families can plan a Mother’s Day enjoying the great outdoors, even giving Mom a new fishing pole, hiking gear or other items that align with her favorite nature activity. The Relaxation Specialist Of course, some mothers may want to simply unwind with a relaxing morning at the spa on Mother’s Day. In fact, the 2018 U.S. Spa Industry Study found that the spa industry has enjoyed seven consecutive years of consistent growth, with more than 187 billion spa visits in 2017 alone. A relaxing morning at the spa can be the perfect way for moms to begin Mother’s Day before they enjoy a brunch of dinner out with their families. Mother’s Day celebrations can be as unique as the women being celebrated.

other’s Day is a celebration of women who devote so much of their effort and energy to their families. Celebrating Mom on Mother’s Day lets her know all of her efforts haven’t gone unnoticed. Mothers may perform similar tasks, but no two moms are the same. Finding ways to celebrate Mom’s uniqueness can make the day that much more meaningful and memorable. The Crafter Mothers who are avid crafters may enjoy a craft-themed Mother’s Day. A family crafting project can make for a fun afternoon and produce mementos that Mom will cherish for years to come. Dads and kids can plan the project in advance without Mom’s knowledge, arranging all of the materials ahead of time and setting up the crafting station the night before or while Mom is relaxing on Mother’s Day morning. Kids can even get a head start on the day by making their own craft for Mom and giving it to her as a Mother’s Day present. Dads can keep the craft theme going at dinner and get a laugh out of Mom by pouring her a craft beer when dinner is served. threatened lawsuits against companies involved in the exploitation of Mother’s Day. To Jarvis, Mother’s Day was to be about appreciation and honor, not greeting card and chocolate sales. At one point, Anna Jarvis was actually arrested for disturbing the peace during one of her protests. Ultimately, life ended very sadly for Anna Jarvis, as she died broke, in a sanatarium in 1948 and she was buried next to her beloved mother. So, this year, when you give your mom a call, or send her some flowers, take a minute to give thanks to the sacrifices of Anna Jarvis, who fought so very hard to have mothers everywhere officially recognized.

with florists, Jarvis was eventually able to persuade state governments to honor the day. This ultimately led Woodrow Wilson to sign legislation in 1914, declaring Mother’s Day a national holiday to be celebrated on the second Sunday in May. This story is not all happy, however. As the popularity of celebrating Mother’s Day grew, so did its commercialization. By the 1920s, companies such as Hallmark were selling greeting cards and candy companies were making a profit as well. Anna Jarvis believed that it was wrong for companies to be exploiting the holiday that she created in this way, as it was to be a day about honoring mothers, not turning a profit. Jarvis organized a series of boycotts and

pring is the season of renewal and growth. This year, it will also be the season we remember being stuck at home while we social distanced ourselves so we could stay healthy and virus free. We can use the extra time we have from not running between activities and commitments to improve ourselves: organize our lives, focus on neglected areas of our houses, and spring clean our health. Decluttering your life and prioritizing your health can make a huge impact on your mental health and personal daily habits that impact your physical health. This time at home

is your chance to re-evaluate your daily habits and learn to put your health higher on your priority list. You can even get your whole family in on the action — since you are all in this together. Seven Ways to Spring Clean Your Health Taking care of yourself is a great way to improve both your physical and mental health. Here are seven tips to help you put your health first: Get outside. – Even though you need to be mindful of social distancing, you can still get outside and get some fresh air. As the weather gets warmer, you should get outside for a walk, or sit on a bench with a view and enjoy nature. Studies have shown that exposure to greenspace and the outdoors can reduce your

risk of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and type II diabetes. Learn to cook healthy meals as a family. – Research shows people who eat homecooked meals regularly tend to be happier and healthier. Home-cooked meals also tend to contain less sugar and processed ingredients than takeout, which can result in higher energy levels and better mental health. By cooking and eating your meals together as a family, you can instill the habit of healthy eating in your children and have valuable family bonding time. Challenge yourself with a plant-based meal each week. Make exercise a habit. – Adding exercise to your daily or weekly routine can have benefits far beyond physical fitness. Exercise is known to improve mood and decrease feelings of anxiety and depression. Not only does it help you burn calories, but it can also be good for building muscles and strong bones. Lack of regular physical activity is a primary cause of chronic disease, so get up and get moving. Plant a vegetable garden. – Growing your own vegetables can seem overwhelming to some, however it’s much simpler than it sounds. Even if you don’t have a yard, consider starting a patio garden or even an indoor herb garden on a windowsill. Gardening is a natural stress reliever, and by eating the vegetables you grow, you consume essential nutrients that promote better health. This can even help you save money on groceries. Unplug your Wi-Fi for set hours every day. – In 2020, everyone has easy access to screentime. Whether it is social media, news sites, shows, or games, we are more connected than ever. Make it a habit to unplug the Wi-Fi for two-to-four hours every day. This habit can

give you more private or family time as well as improve sleep and mental health. Set regular bedtimes and wake times. – It is important for everyone to get seven-to-nine hours of sleep every day. Working from home and no school can seem like great reasons to stay up late, but it’s important to keep your body on a regular sleep cycle. Also, make sure that you put your phone away and turn off your TV or other devices during your scheduled sleep time to help you get the best sleep possible. Take vitamins regularly. – It is hard to get all the vitamins and nutrients we need through diet. Vitamins and supplements are not a shortcut to better health but combined with eating right and regular exercise you can ensure your body is getting the nutrients it needs. You don’t need to purchase the whole vitamin aisle; one multivitamin can contain a balance of the vitamins and nutrients you need. Use this added time at home to focus on yourself and your family. You don’t have to completely change your life – just consider making little improvements each week. If you need encouragement or have questions on how to live a healthier life, talk to your primary care provider. They can help connect you with the resources you need as well as offer suggestions based on your personal health and activity level. Remember that improving your physical health helps your mental health and can help get you through this challenging time. Dr. Elizabeth Klucka is a board-certified family practice provider with UPMC. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

E

ach and every day a new woman becomes a mother for the first time or all over again. Being a mother changes a person’s life in dramatic ways. Mother’s Day is a great time of year to honor mothers and attempt to give back just a portion of the tireless love and devotion moms offer their children. Some children provide large gestures, while others feel it’s the little things that can help a mom to feel appreciated. For those needing a little inspiration on treating their mothers in special ways, consider these ideas. • Make mom a breakfast in bed with her favorite morning treats. • Enjoy a movie at home with mom. Let her pick the flick and share her favorite film with you. • Agree to not bicker for the entire day, especially if you are prone to getting into arguments with siblings. • Put together a collage of photos from moments you have shared with mom or your family. • Cook a meal together and learn about everyone’s favorite recipes or the family history. • Give her a locket with your photo inside and have a duplicate you can wear containing her photo. • Customize a coffee mug, tote bag or a blanket with a meaningful sentiment or photo. • Treat mom to a day off from her chores. Tackle all of the jobs she normally does for the family.

• Bake a delicious dessert that mom will absolutely devour. • Pamper mom with a gift card for her favorite nail salon or massage therapy location. • Prepare a jar of mom’s favorite candies wrapped in pieces of paper that have loving sentiments written on them. • Compile a playlist of songs and artists mom prefers and download them to her phone. • Begin a charm bracelet tradition by purchasing a charm bracelet and a new charm each year that represents a meaningful memory you both shared. • Write a new email each day with an inspirational quote or special words of love for mom. • Tackle a task that she may not want to do herself, such as washing the exterior of her car and vacuuming the interior. Mother’s Day gift ideas should come from the heart and can show mothers near and far how much they are appreciated and loved.

ntirely lacking in the fanfare and excitement which greeted Armistice Day in 1918, tempered by the realization that America will have a war with Japan to win, and made solemn by the knowledge that hostilities to this date have claimed hundreds of the city’s finest young men, Williamsport today, marked its observance of V-E Day. More solemn than spirited, the local observance began with a short parade at 11 o’clock. This was followed with prayers and religious devotions at the Pine Street Methodist Church where 2,000 people assembled. Despite the inclement weather, thousands of spectators, most of them workers leaving closed plants and stores, lined the streets of the business district streets as the short parade made its way from Market Street to Hepburn, Fourth Street and thence to the front of City Hall.

After 40 months of waiting for a victory left this city with pent-up emotions which the local populace had been waiting to express for more than a week. Factories, stores, business places, offices and taprooms closed shortly after President Truman addressed the nation by proclamation at 9 a.m. Uncertainty prevailed amid the rain whether or not to conduct the parade. Finally, at 11 o’clock led by the Howard W. Kahler Post 844 VFW colors, the parade moved. The only musical organization which marched was the Kahler Post drum and bugle corps. The Aviation Company band and the Williamsport High School band gathered at City Hall and filed into the Pine Street Methodist Church, where hundreds of the city’s citizens had gathered to worship. Schools of the city joined in the community’s celebration. Principals of the various buildings conducted which explained and emphasized the significance of V-E. Day.

of it since. Year two, my husband had just lost his job, and we were in a frantic savings mode, so we didn’t do anything. To be honest, this time period, in general, is a blur. I still hadn’t had two consecutive full nights of sleep in about 18 months, while working full time, and things were all around stressful. Mother’s Day 2018 was by far the worst, major catastrophe! I was nine months pregnant and exhausted, so my dear loving husband decided that for Mother’s Day, he would take our 2-year-old to his aunt’s house for a sleepover on that Saturday night. I’d have the TV to myself for the evening, the bed to myself to sleep the WHOLE night through, and then the morning to myself to sleep in, drink my

tea in peace, and then meet them at his aunt’s for a simple lunch. Well, I woke up at 7 a.m. out of habit and needing to pee when I heard running water. Thinking that maybe the 3rd-floor toilet was running or the shower was leaking, only to discover water pouring from the ceiling in our guest room! I stood in shock for a moment, and then somehow moved the mattress and box spring out of the room, got buckets from the basement (three flights up and down) called my husband and mother for help, all the while I still hadn’t gone to the bathroom! I laugh, looking back now, but it was horrible. We had roofers come later that day, the following week a remediation specialist for mold removal, and it took months to fix the damage and repair the ceiling. It took so long that it wasn’t until

after our second daughter’s baptism later that fall that everything was back in order. Last year can best be described as “bagel-gate.” It’s still not clear on whether someone forgot to buy bagels, or someone forgot to send an email about who was buying bagels, or if the bagel email was confusing in and of itself. I have no further comment… This year, Mother’s Day will unfold like most of our Sundays have here in quarantine: Rise and shine somewhere between 5 and 6:30, throw some microwave waffles at the girls as they watch a mini-marathon of “PJ Masks” or “Doc McStuffins,” or maybe even “Supermonsters.” I will then go back to sleep on the couch until around 7:30 or so. Then it’s a cup of tea and scarfing down leftover waffles. Happy Mother’s Day!

chairs. It was a sunny day, but also kind of chilly, and we carried on with bagels, cream cheese, and salmon. Things were going fairly well, but as I mentioned before we were sleep-deprived, and I was fading fast, and feeling frustrated that my husband wasn’t helping me more. Hosting six other adults while caring for a baby who would only sleep 3-4 hours straight did not set me up to react in a rational way when I saw my husband using my dedicated tea mug for coffee. From a place in my body I still can’t locate came a howlish, shrieking, banshee yell that then escalated into a tearful monologue about how I had so few pleasures in life and now my morning cup of herbal tea will forever be ruined with his coffee aftertaste. Thankfully, no one who witnessed this incident has made mention

Using slotted spoon, remove eggs and drain on paper towels. Spread butter on one side of bread slices. Place bread in skillet and cook until golden brown. Add ham to same skillet and cook until browned on both sides. To assemble, spread bread slices with orange marmalade. Top each with one slice cooked ham and one poached egg. A Personal Note From Catherine:

It is time for Governor Wolf to open up our State. As business owners, we have always had to follow regulations, that is nothing new. We have been responsible individuals who have provided jobs and revenue to the state, and are now capable of following virus recommendations regarding clients and customers. He is now including a proposed increase to Minimum Wage. This will further bankrupt small businesses across the state. have to confess that our methods were not transforming our people or our mission field. Most growth experienced by Christian churches in America is transfer growth a shuffling of Christians from one church to another. That’s not all bad, but we fool ourselves if we think that shuffling people around is success. It’s not, and the statistics prove it. If we’re willing to see the failure, then maybe we’ll be willing to change. New wine requires new wineskins, and Jesus made it clear that God won’t pour new wine into old skins. Are we willing to make the sacrifices necessary to become new skins? Are we willing to leave our conveniences and preferences and traditions behind? Doing so will require sacrifice because mission advancement always requires sacrifice. Ask yourself: Is new wine worthy of giving up our old skins? I urge you to redeem this pandemic shutdown by focusing on the future, not on the past. Don’t waste a lot of energy, time and resources trying to figure out how to go back to an old way that wasn’t working. The best days of the church are ahead of us if we’re willing to become new skins and take in the new wine. I’ve started that conversation with our church. It won’t be easy because sacrifice is always hard. But we must be convinced that the new wine is worthy of all we have to give. Church, this is our moment. God is calling. The mission is before us. New wine is flowing…

31 • Webb Weekly May 6, 2020

In Matthew 9:14-17, Jesus encountered some criticism because He was teaching in new ways and His followers were breaking with tradition. In response, He said: “No one sews a patch of unshrunk cloth on an old garment, for the patch will pull away from the garment, making the tear worse. Neither do men pour new wine into old wineskins. If they do, the skins will burst, the wine will run out and the wineskins will be ruined. No, they pour new wine into new wineskins and both are preserved.” The adaptability of the church during this pandemic is convincing me that God is pouring out new wine. And friends, the church needs new wine. Christianity has been losing ground in the United States for decades. The numbers of unchurched and de-churched people continue to climb. By most estimates, the United States is now considered a postChristian nation. Somewhere in the last 50 years our wine lost its kick and our wineskins got old and brittle. Sadly, we didn’t recognize the loss. We kept doing things the same way, year after year, and expected different outcomes. (Insanity, right?) I believe that God is giving us an opportunity to redeem this pandemic as a wake-up call. I very humbly offer you this caution: Don’t waste this moment trying to figure out how to get back to the way it was before the pandemic hit. Friends, it wasn’t working. Oh, it was comfortable and convenient and we were enjoying the routine and the tradition, but if we’re willing to be honest, then we

PreParing your home for sale with Lori Solomon, Realtor

Mobile: 570-337-2632 lsolomon@wheresthathome.com

Q: A:

How important is preparing your home for sale? Does it really impact value?

Q: A:

Are homes still selling during this Pandemic? Is now a good time to put my home on the market?

Q: A:

How will buyers see my home during social distancing? Do I need to focus on anything to make my home safer?

Q: A:

How much money should I invest when preparing my home for sale?

Q: A:

What rooms of my home should I focus most of my attention on when preparing my home for sale?

Having your home show-ready is very important. You never get a second chance to make a good first impression. Your home should be cleaned up, with things in their correct location. Remove personal items (like family pictures) and minimize clutter around the house to maximize space and allow potential buyers to imagine how their belongings would look in the home.

Yes, homes are still currently selling. There are many reasons that people need to move right now, we have clients who have accepted an offer on their current home, have relocated for a job, or their current lease has ended and they need to find housing quickly.

Some homes are being sold sight unseen and others are relying on virtual tours, however, we are hopeful to go back to showing homes in person this month. Sellers should leave all doors open and lights on, to minimize contact with doorknobs and switches. We will also supply gloves and shoe covers to our clients during showings.

This depends on the current condition of the home. If it hasn’t been updated in 20-30 years, your investment may be more than a property that has recent upgrades. It’s important to remember that not all home improvements will yield a large return.

ou’ve got a few things to say about that guy in the White House. If not now, well, you’ve said a few things about other guys in the White House over the years – much of it civil, but some of it was inappropriate for polite society. And in “Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels” by Edwin L. Battistella, you’re in good company. Was there ever a time when people didn’t verbally poke one another? Probably not. Says Battistella, in times past, insulting was a combat sport of lips and minds, like a Greek-and-Roman “Yo Mama” war of words. With that history of zingers and arrows in mind, it’s no surprise that American Presidents have heard their share.

Insults, says Battistella, take many forms but for all of them, disrespect and demeaning are key. In politics, especially, neutral words can take on a tone of deep insult, some names practically scream to be zinged, flaws (real or perceived) could be highlighted, and insulters should gets bonus points for alliteration. Old language can also resurface as a brand-new burn, when words just come back around

Harry Truman was infamously rankled by an insult to his daughter; JFK and Bill Clinton were both called “spoiled”; several post-World-War-II presidents have been verbally compared to Hitler; Margaret Thatcher had a uniquelyBritish opinion about Ronald Reagan, and what was said about Richard Nixon, well, let’s just say that it’s in this book... In this time of partisan politics and divisiveness, you’ve probably

said some things. You probably have some opinions. A few of them may be rather peppery, so what you need is a little sprinkle of “Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels.” And that’s about what you’ll get: a small but nicely-balanced, nonpartisan selection of 45-plus brief, quick-to-read entries and accompanying sidebars that are gently humorous, historical, and – most surprisingly – not entirely focused on politics. Nope, author Edwin L. Battistella writes just as much about the language we use when we create insults as he

does about the targets of those japes; here, you’ll learn about the different kinds of insults and how delivery is important. Battistella then goes on to include a glossary of common terms and a how-to for insults which (who knew?) actually have structure and meaning that an English teacher would be proud of. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself burning with a brand-new eighteenth-century vocabulary. Don’t be surprised if you laugh, either, because, as for “Dangerous Crooked Scoundrels,” there’s a lot of good to say about it.

to insult anew. “Dotard,” anyone? Sticks, stones, and snowflakes aside, then, does an insult matter? Yes, says Battistella: “How we insult presidents tells us about the presidents, but it also tells us about the American nation’s anxieties and aspirations.” And that White House guy gets it on the chin. Though he was really quite popular, for example, George Washington took his share of insults, and he took them to heart. Abraham Lincoln, beloved now, was called

addition, recipients will also receive the link to watch recordings the Victory Garden Reinvented webinar series. The “Victory Garden Reinvented!” webinar series is available on the Penn State Extension website https:// extension.psu.edu/victory-gardenreinvented-series. “In light of the coronavirus restrictions, people are stepping outdoors and gardening, many for the first time,” said Nancy Knauss, state Master Gardener coordinator. “Gardening benefits both the mind and body and the resulting high quality, fresh fruits and vegetables are an added bonus.”

T.I.M.E. plans to provide 1,200 free tomato plants during the event. Donations will be accepted to support the Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way. Joanne Troutman/President & CEO/Greater Susquehanna Valley United Way stated: We have always valued our partnership with TIME and been proud of their leadership in our region. This giveaway is not just a creative and sustainable food solution for families in need, but we are also humbled to be the beneficiary of this great work. TIME Board President Amanda Craig stated: These plants are a small gesture

of thanks to all of our hometown heroes: the essential workers, ConAgra employees and veterans. Right now, small things will make a big difference long term, and we are so excited to share part of Milton’s tomato history with community members. This project is supported through the generosity of the Conagra Brands Foundation. The goal of Chef ’s Place/ Boiardi Museum & Eatery Program is to teach people in the community skills on gardening, preparing healthy meals and snacks while building an understanding of nutrition and how to live a healthy lifestyle.

he Pennsylvania spring gobbler season is in full swing, and preseason scouting would indicate that this should be a really good year to bag one of nature’s greatest game birds. Before you head to the woods, there are a few things you should give some thought to. The majority of those who get up every morning well before daylight, trudge deep into the woods ahead of the sunrise and spend sometimes countless hours in pursuit of this magnificent bird would refer to a spring gobbler as the “King of the Game Birds.” It truly is a stunning sight when a mature gobbler is all fanned out and strutting for a nearby hen, while the early morning sunlight dances off the iridescent colored feathers that cover his body. Add to that the flashes of red and white that he displays on his head, neck and waddles and it is one of the most beautiful images in nature. To take a bird like that is truly to take a genuine trophy. If you are fortunate enough to take a mature gobbler, what will you do with it? Have you considered having a local taxidermist do some type of mount to commemorate the hunt and honor this bird? There are several choices that a good taxidermist can offer. There is a

full mount, usually done in a position of the bird strutting, which highlights all of his colors and the uniqueness of the display he puts on for his hens. A breast mount is a nice wall display and includes the head, breast and beard — with the tail all fanned out behind the breast and head. Another option is to mount just the fanned out tail along with the beard. It really comes down to your budget and how you want to show the mount, or where you might have room enough to properly showcase the mount. If there is even a remote chance that you might want to have a mount done, then special care must be taken in the field once the bird is down to insure a great looking mount. Carrying a turkey out of the woods - particularly a big gobbler can be awkward, and frequently if you have a long hike to your destination, numerous feathers can be lost, ruffled or broken, making the work difficult for even the best taxidermist. The answer to this dilemma is pantyhose. Yes, pantyhose! Merely slip the entire bird head first into one leg of the pantyhose. As the hose is pulled down over the entire bird, the feathers are laid back in place and remain in a stable undamaged condition until you get the bird to the taxidermist. If a mount of some type is not in the

The tail can be kept intact and dried in a fully fanned out position. It can then either be displayed or used as a real tail in a gobbler decoy that often is sold with a plastic or paper tail. The addition of your fanned-out tail instead of the artificial tail will add to a more realistic look on the decoy. These tail feathers can also be plucked individually and make a great “canvas” for painting wildlife scenes. The wonderful sights and experiences that a spring gobbler hunter encounters are worthy of remembering and honoring. By using some of the body parts as described above, you will be able to enjoy recalling the sights and sounds and the thrill of a successful spring gobbler hunt.

cards, there are several other things you can do that are unique to a gobbler. The three wing bones in each wing can be removed, cleaned and used to make a two-bone or a three-bone wing bone call. Once completed, you can inscribe the date and location of the kill on the call, or decorate it with a painting of some kind. It will add to the magic of some future hunt if you are able to master the use of this call and actually call in and take another turkey using the call that you made from the wing bones of a gobbler that you had taken. Spurs can be removed along with a section of the leg bone to which they are attached and then are often displayed on a necklace.

As water temperatures increase as we move into summer, crappies will move back to deeper areas of the lake and suspend at various depths in schools. While crappies can literally be caught yearround (they are a top target of ice-fishermen) spring is a good time to go after them but don’t think that once they have moved to deeper water, they are uncatchable. Changing techniques and especially depths can keep you catching crappies all year long. Check all regulations for keeping crappies on the lakes you fish since special regulations are in place on a number of lakes. While I like to keep some for the dinner table, I also like to limit my take to ensure that there will be plenty of crappies down the road.

series of five to ten vertical bands. On a white crappie, the distance from the eye to the front of the dorsal fin is greater than the length of the dorsal fin base; that distance is equal on a black crappie. Finally, the white crappie will usually have six spines on the dorsal fin while the black crappie will have seven or eight. As I mentioned earlier, knowing the difference between the two species probably won’t make a bit of difference when it comes to catching them; the same lures, baits, and techniques work for both. Any kind of topwater lure is a poor choice since crappies seldom feed on the surface. I have taken a few rare ones while fishing a surface popper for bluegills, but that is a definite exception. In spring, crappies begin to move from the deeper portion of a lake into shallower water

they are dedicated panfish enthusiasts, can tell the difference between the two species. I often catch both species on the same lake, in the same location, using the same techniques and at the same time. Don’t let the terms black and white fool you; there’s not that much difference in color between the two. The black crappie is usually a bit darker than the white crappie, but that can vary a great deal depending on a number of factors, including water clarity. There are some other identifying characteristics to look for to help you distinguish between the two. One thing to look for is the arrangement of the black markings on the sides of the fish; on the black crappie, the black markings are scattered randomly with no pattern along each side. On the white crappie, the black markings are a

A salute to all Mothers be they grand or brand new May’s second Sunday is all about you No matter what else may be going on this day Love from your children should be coming your way!

T

hankfully, one of the celebrations enjoyed by Americans that has not been postponed or canceled by the ongoing pandemic — Mother’s Day — will be celebrated this Sunday. While the observance commemorating the one individual, all of us have in common, may be a bit different than in recent years, it nevertheless will take place. History reveals that celebrations of mothers and motherhood can be traced back to the ancient Greeks and Romans. Early Christianity marked the occasion by establishing Mothering Sunday observances. In the United States, Mother’s Day was created by Anna Jarvis in 1908 as a means of honoring her mother, who died in 1905. President Woodrow Wilson officially established the day in 1914. Today, Mother’s Day has become a commercial boom. There are more telephone calls made on this day (112 million) than on any other day of the year. Additionally, there are 152 million cards

sent, and it is the busiest day of the year for restaurants. The advent of commercialism taking over the day so angered Jarvis that she spent the later years of her life engaged in efforts to remove the day from the calendar. There will always be unique ways to remember and thank Mothers. Although, sports have nothing to do with the observance of Scott the day; perhaps one of the very Lowery special ways to salute Mom was orchestrated by Montoursville native Tom O’Malley when he was called up to the Major Leagues by the San Francisco Giants on Mother’s Day weekend in May of 1982. O’Malley’s debut came at Shea Stadium against the Mets, and with his parents, Tom and Lois, in attendance, he hit his first MLB home run on Mother’s Day. Many moms are sports lovers also, but on this day, husbands and children won’t be rushing the observance to dash to the TV to see how their favorite teams are making out. In a flashback from my years of managing teams in South Williamsport’s Little Mountaineer Little League, I can vividly recall that Mother’s Day was the one day of the season where no Little League games could be played. It was OK to play on Memorial Day, Father’s Day, and July 4th but not on that day set aside to honor Mom. Those Little League days bring up the memories shared with so many but perhaps

experienced a few falls, I bought her a pair of sneakers and proudly gifted them to her on Mother’s Day, explaining that she would be more comfortable and safe wearing them. After Mom’s passing a few years later while cleaning out her home, I found those same sneakers in a box in her closet — never worn. The mother of our own children (Denise and Doug) has been a wonderful sports wife for 56 years. I’m not quite sure she knew the level of sports involvement she was getting into, but Jean has been a supportive life companion. She has actively been involved with the many sporting ventures the kids and I have undertaken. Since 1987, when I began coaching basketball at South Williamsport, she has been at the scorer’s table pencil in hand. She has been by my side as I completed an early ‘bucket list’ of attending MLB games at each of the 30 stadiums around the country. She has patiently (most of the time) scheduled meals and outings around some type of sporting event that held my interest. She was my sidekick and co-founder of a fledgling business hobby (Sports Score Service) we ran for several years. And in 1976, she was among a handful of women who organized the first Little League Softball program in South Williamsport. As each of you takes the time to thank your Mom on this special day, may the many memories you’ve shared together be always with you. One more thing — forget the social distancing — give Mom a great big hug. Happy Mother’s Day!

no more than with a handful of ladies that were of tremendous help to me who labored under the loving volunteer title of ‘Team Mom.’ These ladies were godsends as they scheduled and took care of all those off-the-field activities that are a big part of the Little League experience. Fundraising, concession stand workers, picture day, uniform distribution, etc. were among the diversified necessities taken care of by these wonderful women. Sometimes the turnover rate of team moms can be high, but in my 22-year managerial career, I was fortunate to have had a ‘fab five’ to whom I send out a very special greeting this Mother’s Day. Included are Carol Kagenski (4 years), Joan Helmrich (6 years), Pam Miller (5 years), Tammy Cimini (2 years), and Deb Shellman (5 years). Those years with you and your children were most memorable, and the tireless efforts you gave to our teams have not been forgotten. Although my late mother, Annmary, was not personally athletic, she was an enthusiastic baseball fan and enjoyed golf. I recall her stories of visiting Arnold Palmer’s golf heaven in Latrobe. We enjoyed many baseball outings together at Bowman Field and occasional trips to MLB games. She would always tune in to watch the Masters Golf Tournament, and when things got exciting, she would call me to see if I was watching. Professionally, Mom was an interior decorator who seldom went anywhere, not nattily attired. I never once saw her in tennis shoes. In her later years after she

finally got the call from the bullpen kids. Heading back to work tomorrow morning. I really enjoyed my time away. Taught school, played some hoops and fished every single day. 41 straight. My little sidekick took the news rather hard. Jensen has been my best buddy throughout it all. I am going to miss being a stay at home dad. Breaking News. The 2020 Little League World Series has been cancelled. Steve Keener with Little League International informed us on Thursday. Tough but sound decision boys and girls. The COVID-19 crisis has made it literally impossible for all the teams to convene. This will be the first cancellation in this program’s incredible history. “This is a heartbreaking decision for everyone at Little League International, but more so for those millions of Little Leaguers who have dreamt of one day playing in one of our seven World Series events,” Little League president and CEO Steve Keener said on Facebook. Eighty-two regional qualifying tournaments and seven World Series events, including the Little League Softball World Series, were docked. The 2020 MLB Little League Classic, which was going to feature the Red Sox vs. the Orioles on August 23 in Williamsport, is also cancelled. Unfortunate indeed.

The organization made the decision after consulting with Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf, along with local and federal health officials. Social distancing and International travel concerns also played major roles. “Many of the travel restrictions that are in place will have significant impact on our ability to have teams from other countries participate in qualifying tournaments and ultimately to come to the United States for a World Series tournament based on the complexities that will be in place this summer,” Keener later said. “We’re as disappointed as anyone. We’ve never had to do this before.” Several area golf courses are set to reopen this week. Special thanks to a local politician who traveled all the way to Harrisburg to voice his opinion. I heard from the folks at Belles Springs, Corey Creek, Clinton and Whitey Deere. All were excited to get back on the links once again. It has been a very touchy and highly debated subject. I just hope everyone reads and obeys the fine print before they tee off. Courses throughout the Commonwealth will now follow some rather interesting CDC guidelines. I don’t know if every place is the same but according to White Deer’s website- this is insane. Good

luck enforcing. Bring back the rangers. Hey. That’s my picture. Here are a few highlights from their presser. The safety of our staff and guests will not be compromised. In order to help us keep everyone safe Jamie and limit interaction with Spencer the staff all tee times must be booked and paid for in advance allowing you to check-in with the starter and tee off while continuously maintaining the CDC recommended 6-foot distance from our staff and other guests. You may not see the correct rate after you’ve logged into the booking engine. If so, please call the golf shop directly to book your play and pay via phone with a credit card. Additionally, our rates have been simplified so we apologize, but additional discounts, gift cards, and rain checks will not be accepted for payment towards online tee times at this time. No access is permitted to some club facilities, including but not limited to; the clubhouse, golf shop, bar, restaurant & driving range. Restrooms will be available at the clubhouse with limited access, and mask will be required upon entry. Tee times will be limited, and intervals will be 14 minutes apart. All players MUST HAVE A TEE TIME.

No walk-up play will be allowed on the course. Tee times MUST be booked through our online booking engine or our App. All Tee Times must be Pre-paid in advance. Cash will not be accepted until further notice. Cart use will be single rider or you may walk. Cart use may be limited at times. Although our staff will be sanitizing carts each day, we please ask that you follow extra sanitation needs. No groups larger than 4 players Please show up no earlier than 10-15 minutes before your tee time to avoid interaction with other groups. Unannounced entry to any part of the golf course will be not be allowed. All golfers MUST maintain proper social distancing at all times, this is mandatory, no exceptions. For guest safety, the following will be removed from the golf course: rakes for bunkers, ball washers, water coolers, sand bottles & restrooms. Please use your foot to smooth out the bunkers to the best of your ability. No scorecards or pencils will be provided. Until further notice putts are not to be holed traditionally. There will be flagsticks, and the cups will prevent the ball from entering the hole. The flagstick is to remain in the hole and should not be touched for any reason. No loitering in the parking lot before or after play. Unprecedented. Cheers.
