From the Publisher…

They’re Leading Us Down a Primrose Path By Jim Webb Jr.

W

e seem to have a lot of new readers to the Webb Weekly. Some of the hard copy, many online, and the majority directed through social media. To all, I welcome you. My contact information is always on page 4, and you may reach out to me any way you would like. I try to answer everyone personally, although sometimes that’s not possible. If I miss you, hit me up again. Sometimes I am a little forgetful. Now, if I’m sounding a little redundant to my regular readers please just sit back, read and relax, there is more to come. It’s like turning on the TV and watching a movie or show that’s already started. There has been some groundwork already laid you must understand to appreciate what’s playing out. My weekly column is all about how I perceive things through my eyes. I apply common sense, and knowledge learned over my lifetime. I put myself out there and tackle tough issues. Although most of the time it’s about all the good going on right here at home in the West Branch Valley. It is never in an attempt to push a political agenda or anger anyone. It’s the exact opposite. It is our goal at Webb Weekly to present the best humanity has to offer. It is my personal goal each week to make you think about what’s going on in the world around us. Hopefully, make you smile, laugh, maybe even bring a tear to your eyes. It’s my objective to give you a different perspective than can be found anywhere else. I think this is of the utmost importance in today’s world of cookie-cutter

journalism. I don’t expect folks to always agree with me, nor do I want to change your mind. I just want to present the facts when it comes to tough issues and get the wheels of thought turning. I love our great Nation and believe in the power of the 1st amendment. The amazing freedom provided by the Constitution of the United States and the servicemen and women of our great Nation can never be taken for granted. We the people must always stand up in defense of our Nation and freedom. I was blessed to be educated and raised by a very conservative Republican Father. And at the same time, my Grandfather was a staunch, well-connected Democrat. Both men worked their way up from nothing. My Grandfather actually spent time in an orphanage. Again, if this sounds familiar, it should to some of you, I’ve written this before, but I feel we must take a step back to move forward. My Mom is a Democrat, my Stepmother Carol, who is like a second mother, is a Republican. My Stepfather, God rest his soul, was Democrat. I’m not going to go through my whole family but it’s the perfect blend of different views and ideas with one thing in common, we all love our great Nation. I must, however, mention my sister Morgan, who went to New York University, was a union organizer for the ACLU, worked for the President Obama campaign, and much more. You get the picture. I have seen and heard pretty much every political thought and angle over the years. I never set out to write about and discuss politics within our Nation; it just worked out that way. Funny how life prepared me for the

future with my eyes wide open. So, what follows has nothing to do with being a Republican or Democrat, or even Libertarian or Independent. It has everything to do with being an American citizen and preserving our Nation and one’s freedom for future generations. Our Country has not been more divided since the Civil War. This occurred long before the COVID-19 pandemic. This has been done by the national media, social media — where every American has an opinion, whether fact or fiction — and by those elected to serve us. This includes both Republicans and Democrats. Compromise has become a 4-letter word in our great Nation. Compromise and understanding are not just the principles that allow me to understand and get along with all of my family; they are the foundation needed within any government of a free society. Our elected government that is intended to work for the people has failed us. They have grown government to the point where it’s extinguishing the torch of Lady Liberty, has removed the blindfold of impartiality from the statue of Lady Justice and created generational monarchy in our Nation’s capital. This cannot be blamed on one party! It has taken both Republicans and Democrats decades to create this machine of power and wealth, as well as our National debt. We must begin immediately to change the current primrose path our Nation is on. It will be the greatest challenge our Country has ever faced and will require “We the People” to unite and work together to preserve the American dream. So, here is where you, the American citizen, comes in. I already know several things that must be changed immediately. I want to hear your thoughts and ideas. I want to publish a nonpartisan Letter of Government Reform requested by “We the People.” I want it read by every elected official in state and federal

government. I want to empower We the People to put our elected officials back to work as intended for We the People with a playbook for the future. This is also about preventing the current persecution of innocent American citizens that is going on from sea to shining sea. This is about not only preserving liberty for future generations but passing on an America that is financially healthy. Our Nation is at the point of the financial abyss, and all many elected officials want to do is print more monopoly money and make sure their pensions are funded. Again, our Nation was here prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Please tell me your thoughts and what needs to be changed to prevent our current path of self-destruction. Moving Right Along… Our Webb Weekly star of the class of 2020 is Alex Reed from Loyalsock Township. What an unbelievable high school career he has put together. He will be heading off to Duke University in the fall and hopefully serve our Nation in the Air Force upon graduation. See Steph’s story page 4. Our family business of the week is Robin and John Tebbs and the great folks at Tebbs Farms and Greenhouses, see page 10. The Tebbs family epitomizes all that is right on God’s green Earth not only in small business but most importantly in God, Country, and family. The business, which began With Dick and Maple’s roadside stand on Four Mile Drive, is now on its 3rd generation. Rachel, like Mother Robin, can be found with the ladies working the front end of the store. While Dan can be found like his Father working the fields and the back end of the business. A 4th generation is already in training. A tip of my Webb Weekly hat with the American Flag on the side to the Tebbs family and their staff. “They’ve been on the grow since 1948.” God Bless America.

hen I graduated from high school in approximately 1872, South Williamsport High School was doing construction on the football field, so instead of graduating at Rodney K. Morgans Stadium, we graduated in right field at Lamade Stadium. I imagine that it took a lot of finagling for SWASD to get that done, and up until now, I figured it would be one of the odder situations that districts would have to figure out. Color me so very, very wrong. I feel bad for the senior classes of 2020. The missed their lasts of everything. Sports season, proms, graduations, all of it. But that doesn’t mean that we shouldn’t recognize the seniors of the classes of 2020. Here at Webb Weekly we are working to celebrate local seniors. Last week Jimmy started with his nephew Chance, and we will continue going forward. You can send information about your senior to me at webbnews@webbweekly.com. Please send a rundown of their accomplishments along with a headshot and ‘action’ shot please! This week’s senior is Alex Reed from Loyalsock High School. Alex is a great kid with an amazing list of accomplishments. Alex will be attending Duke University in the fall majoring in Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and minoring in Finance. His goal is to work for Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. on Wall Street. As a Blue Devil he will be a part of the Air Force ROTC Detachment 585. He also looks forward to participating in club soccer, the Duke

Investment Club as well as the Young Republicans of Duke and participating as part of the Cameron Crazies during basketball season. Steph While at Loyalsock Alex Nordstrom was very well-rounded participating in many sports, clubs and scholar programs.

Alex received his pilot’s license before his driver’s license. Scholar Programs: - Alex is in the top 1% of his highly competitive class. (Probably will end up salutatorian) - Alex is a private pilot. Interesting fact, he soloed on his 16th birthday - Loyalsock’s Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Student of the Year Award 2020 - National Honor Society - HOBY Leadership Alumni - PFEW Alumni and voted CEO of his company - Loyalsock Scholar-Athlete 2019 - Columbia University High School Program in

Globalization & Economics Summer 2019 - Air Force ROTC National Scholarship Recipient - Awarded the Carl E. Stotz Little League Scholarship as the top male recipient - Saxophone player 4th grade-11th grade concert and jazz band - Lycoming County Youth Development Taskforce Club Organization and Leadership Positions: - President for Class of 2020 - President-Key Club - Treasurer-Future Business Leaders of America - Treasurer-SADD - Model United Nations Treasurer and Outstanding Delegate - member of the ski club Sports: Soccer – His Senior year, Alex was 2019 captain of his soccer team. He is a 4-year varsity letterman in soccer. He earned PHAC 2nd team defense and a Sun Gazette honorable mention for his time as a Lancer defender. The past two years he helped the team to back to back PHAC Championships. Cross Country – Alex was captain 2018, 2019 for two years of his XC team and is a 4-year varsity letter winner as well as scoring member of the 1st place district team and 5th place state team. Track – Alex is a two-year captain 2019, 2020 (although did not get to compete in the season) of the boys’ track team and varsity letter winner since his freshman year. He ran the 2-mile where he qualified for district competition every year, 1600, and was a four-year member of the 4x800 relay team. He is also a 4x800 district medalist. Had Alex had a full spring season he would have been 12-time varsity letter winner. Congratulations to Alex! I know his parents, Mike and Nicole, are very proud and look forward to what he accomplishes in the future.

here are many wayward cats that wander the streets and byways of Lycoming County. For more than 40 years one organization has been trying to make life better for these wandering felines through sheltering them and finding good homes for them. That organization is the Lycoming Animal Protection Society, Inc., also known as LAPS — a no-kill feline shelter and adoption center which serves Lycoming County and surrounding counties. This non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization helps to provide housing, food and medical care for homeless and surrendered cats, as well as working toward finding them permanent loving homes through its adoption program. At any given time, LAPS has an average of about 85 resident cats. Most reside at the shelter, although kittens who are too young to be vaccinated and other cats who need extra medical care live in foster homes. LAPS has an amazing group of dedicated volunteers who do a variety of work within the organization.

Every day, there are teams who go in to provide love and attention, food and water, give medications as needed, scoop litter boxes, and clean. Volunteers take the cats for veterinary care, some spearhead their fundraisers, and a board of directors works behind the scenes to keep the business of the organization running. Since its inception in the early 1970s, LAPS has had several ‘homes.’ For the past 12 years, LAPS has rented a facility at 195 Phillips Park Drive in South Williamsport. Due to the building owner’s plans to demolish the facility, all of the tenants have been asked to relocate. LAPS must now find a new home. Over the past couple years, LAPS has been dreaming of owning its own facility. A Building Committee was appointed to try to locate a suitable location. After touring several available properties, one that fulfills most requirements was finally located in Williamsport. However, it needs to be converted into a cat shelter, a process that will take three to four months after the building is purchased. A condition that needs to be met before the

LAPS as a Girl Scout project, toddler beds, or other furniture for the cats to either view their world from or hide in or under, depending on the cat,” Cyndi Mussina, one of LAPS’s active and dedicated volunteers, told Webb Weekly. There is a gap in the time schedule between when the cats must be moved from their home in South Williamsport until the new facility will be ready. Therefore, LAPS is seeking caring and responsible people to foster the LAPS cats in their homes for a period of up to six months. These cats are up to date on their vaccines, have been tested for FIV and FeLV, and will be treated for fleas before going to a foster home. LAPS will provide food and litter for the fostered cats and will pay for veterinary care if needed. LAPS cats are exclusively indoor cats. “LAPS has cats with all different personalities: playful, loving, mischievous, shy, relaxed, you name it! It’s an adventure getting to know them. Each week, when I go in to work my shift, I learn new things about even our long-term residents. I joke that I fall in love with a different cat every week,” says Mussina, describing the cats needing temporary foster homes. If you are interested in helping LAPS during its relocation, please contact LAPS at LapsShelter@windstream.net to request an application to foster.

purchase of the building is obtaining a zoning permit, which will require a variance. A scheduled zoning hearing was postponed due to the closure of Williamsport municipal offices. LAPS officials hope that a permit will be obtained in the near future, and the LAPS building plans can be set into motion. Unfortunately, LAPS’s current landlord, Hutchinson Realty Development, Inc., has a timetable for its need for the Phillips Park Drive building in which LAPS is the last remaining tenant. According to LAPS officials, although the landlord has been very generous and helpful in its offers for other space, nothing that is available meets either LAPS’ space requirements or the zoning ordinances of the City of Williamsport. LAPS does not house its cats in individual cages except for health needs or unusual behavior characteristics. The cats live in rooms or compounds which are usually shared by four to eight cats. The proposed new facility will have at least 25 rooms, an isolation area, a meeting or “get acquainted” area, a treatment room, and a clean-up area with an over-sized sink, washer and dryer among other amenities. “One of the things that impresses me the most about LAPS is that the cats have rooms to live in, instead of pens or crates. In each room, there are cat trees that were built especially for

he Williamsport Pool Fund Drive to raise $200,000 for swimming facilities in the city will get underway June 1, according to Edward L Smead, chairman of the fund drive committee. In making the announcement, Mr. Smead said, “It is now up to the people of the city to determine if the city will have swimming pools.” Plans tentatively call for two pools, 85,000 square feet in size, to be constructed at Memorial Park and Youngs Wood. Cost of construction for the pools and accessories have been estimated at $150,000 each. Once in operation, the pools would be maintained from receipts charged for the use of the pools. Plans call for a modest fee to be charged.

One source of inspiration for the fund drive is a promise of $100,000 from the Williamsport Foundation if the public through its response to the fund drivethat it wants and will support the pools. The $100,000, plus the $200,000 to be sought by the pool committee will provide the necessary money needed to build the pools. James R. Maiolo, vice chairman of the fund committee, said the drive will last two weeks. He said the advanced gifts division headed by Paul W. Reeder, will begin soliciting funds the last week of May. Other division chairmen named are as follows: Lester F. Bower, professional division; Robert J. McKernan downtown merchants division; Paul W. Warnick, youth activities division; and Councilman Joseph Snowiss, service clubs division.

Tebbs Farms and Greenhouses On the Grow Since 1948

T

ebbs Farms and Greenhouses was started in 1948 by Dick and Mable Tebbs in a small tent on Four Mile Drive. They grew their own produce at their farm in Montoursville. With the success of farming, they swiftly moved to greenhouse growing with bedding plants and Easter Flowers — this kept their business open longer through the year and cementing their place in Loyalsock Township. Today, 70 years later, their son John Tebbs and daughter-in-law Robin Tebbs now own the business. They grew the business into a successful, seasonal based staple in Loyalsock. Tebbs starts planting their vast number of flowers, perennials, and bedding plants early in the spring, preparing for their seasonal opening with Easter week. Moving right from Easter into the spring planting season with gorgeous hanging baskets, bountiful trays of bedding plants, hardy perennials, and, of course, vegetable plants for your own garden. As the planting season dwindles, Tebbs Farms is in full bloom with the beginning of fresh fruit season, bringing strawberries, blueberries, and cherries. It isn’t long until their famous sweet corn is ready, usually around the 4th of July. Along with sweet corn, many other fresh vegetables become available including zucchini, bell peppers, tomatoes, carrots, potatoes, onions, cucumbers, etc. As the weather turns colder, Tebbs prepares for fall crops including pie pumpkins, carving pumpkins, apples, squash, etc.

Part of the the Tebbs Family: (R-L) Jessica Steinbacher (Daughter John and Robin), Dan Tebbs (son), Robin Tebbs (middle) and Rachel Tebbs-Livermore (daughter, far right). And it doesn’t stop there. They then open Black Friday with Christmas trees, poinsettias, wreaths, green arrangements, etc. And it all starts all over again in January. For the last 70 years, their business has employed family members and friends that feel more like family. Dick and Mable Tebbs have instilled the value of hard work and dedication into their family and employees. Because of this, their once big dream in that small tent on Four Mile Drive has allowed Tebbs Farms and Greenhouses to grow to a well-known family business that has become a go-to for locals for everything from healthy plants, decorating their homes to delicious homegrown produce to fill their bellies. So as spring turns to summer, be sure to get out and see all that Tebbs has to offer throughout the year.

Living Well…

Time – More Precious Than Money

T

hese are certainly strange times indeed. A worldwide pandemic, record unemployment, snow in May, protective facemasks everywhere we go, and, oh yes...murder hornets! Well, maybe murder hornets aren’t the most pressing item on the apocalypse menu, but this is definitely an unusual and interesting time to be alive. One thing has not changed, however, and that is time. It is a commodity that all of us have in a very finite supply. Under

the current circumstances some of us have more free time than others, while others are busier with work than ever. I am very fortunate to still be employed these days with many businesses closing due to COVID-19, but I am a bit jealous when I hear of people going on daily hikes and working on projects around the house. I would go so far as to say that I am busier than ever, and my days are a blur of spreadsheets and online meetings.

Regardless of your current situation, everyone has a limited amount of time and the enormous decision of how to spend it. There are 1440 minutes per day. That might seem like a lot but when you deduct Dave time for sleep, work (if Bellomo you still have it), and other daily necessities, it does not leave much to spend freely. So, my question to you is how are you spending your time these days? The one thing I will say about the current situation is that I am enjoying working from home, as I am surrounded by my family. My kids have been remarkably content under the circumstances and, though I am still working, I am glad I get to see them when we would normally be going in opposite directions. There are times, however, when they do need to be encouraged to go outside. My wife recently gave them the idea of converting part of our backyard into a miniature golf course, complete with obstacles and traps. The other thing I have personally enjoyed is working out with my kids. As a professional fitness trainer of almost 30 years, I enjoy watching people make

progress, but the truth is that I have always wanted to pass this knowledge on to my kids. My wife says that I have been waiting to train them since they were born. The problem is that we are always too busy. All of my kids have been year-round athletes and by the time they would get home from their sports practice it was time to eat dinner and do their homework, or they were off to another practice or game. If they were to lift weights at all it was usually with their friends at the high school facility. Though I still follow a normal work schedule, I have had the pleasure of scheduling their “phys-ed” class right after my workday ends. I also am fortunate that I no longer have a daily commute, nor do I have to waste time finding work clothes, as jeans and sweatpants are acceptable in my office/ dining room! So, back to my question, how are you spending your time? Sure, we are all a bit stressed and these are strange days, indeed, but there are things we can control and things we cannot. One of the biggest, and most important is how we spend our time. We can worry and wish away the day, or we can build miniature golf courses in the backyard. The choice is yours.

Textured fabric has some weight that will give you a more flattering drape, as opposed to knit jersey fabric, which can be thin and clingy. Having a matching top and bottom allows you to mix and match the set with other pieces. Asos has a variety of knit sets in various colors and price points. Or, check out Old Navy’s knit dresses, keeping in mind that summer will be here before you know it. Lastly, consider the casual jumpsuit instead of sweatpants. This Week’s LION: Appreciating the Under-Appreciated By Larry Stout

N

o one knows what we are going to call the PostPandemic Period, but the one thing we can predict is that it is going to be different than what we experienced just a few short months ago. We will be more cautious and careful in areas we took for granted before, but I believe we will also be more aware of those who we took for granted in the past. Here is my list, I welcome your contributions to add to it! Sanitation workers: I now make a practice to give a wave of thanks to the collectors who come to my house. When the trash and recycling stuff piled up, I began to imagine a world where we did not have these people, and it was not a pretty sight. Truck drivers: I used to hate truckers while traveling. They hogged up the road, they were a pain to get around, especially on two-lane highways, but they also are the ones who keep those stores stocked up that I depend on so much. Farmers: And who raises the food that gets put into those trucks? We are very blessed with the number of farms in our area, and the food supply network that they represent.

Computer programmers: Suddenly, a program named Zoom, that I never heard of before, is now the most indispensable communication tool since the phone went mobile. I am discovering all kinds of essential stuff for my phone and computer. I made fun of these geeks who designed these programs and those who championed them — but not anymore. Repair people: Roof leak? Refrigerator on the fritz? Or my worst nightmare, a computer meltdown? (Had one of those a month ago!) These folks have never been more valuable than they are during a shutdown but deserve a tip of the hat (and maybe even a tip for the pocket) in the best of times. Pastors: Some might be inactive right now, but I know a number of pastors who are working overtime to provide virtual worship services, virtual meetings with leaders, counseling the distressed, and all this with the mounting pressures of diminished funds due to the absence of church services where collections are routinely taken. Pray for your pastor; they are praying for you! Journalists: I know this one might be slightly patronizing my own profession, but I cannot remember a time in my own life (and I was born when Truman

mayors, borough and township officials, and all the departments they represent. All of these people have been in a boxing ring with one hand tied behind their back. These are the under-appreciated. The under-understood are the small business owners who supply the backbone of our local economy. Their struggle to survive will be an ongoing story throughout this year. These ‘underground’ heroes are all around us, and they deserve to be noticed. Most of these do not have fancy titles or advanced degrees, but this crisis has highlighted the value of ordinary people doing extraordinary work in extra-extraordinary times.

Yea, I could sling hale bales where is my head!? These days all run together anymore! So, my point Andrea with my pap, but I wasn’t gonna be is, I not only was late on my Easter McElroy scoopin’ up cow patties the rest of my life. Oh no! I was gonna be with some column but now I’m a week late on Mother’s Day! How could I forget Mother’s bada** biker or something. I had it all planned Day!? Such a special day. Women in our lives out. I knew everything. Oh my momma, she’s a honey! Those teenage who have raised us and taught us so much. I am a strong woman because a strong woman years with me, God bless her cotton pickin’ soul. raised me. She is tough as nails! Her faith in Whew, what a challenge I was. The trying years, God has shown in her since I was young. He to say the least, but she never stopped loving has gotten her through some tough years, and me. Wanted to whoop my butt more times than she still shines in positivity. I mean, she has I can count, but she never lost faith in me. As me for a daughter, so what else could she ask the years went on, I learned to appreciate her for!? *giggles* You all should know my sense of more and more until we became the best of friends. We literally talk on the phone every humor by now! *insert big cheesy smile here* My momma, Susan Metzger, was always and single day. We still remind each other of that still is a very loving, caring mother. No matter splendid day she stopped and pointed me out what she was there. You all know she cooked to that farmer boy. Oh, the memories. My mother-in-law, Marlene McElroy, has been all the time for us, having amazing dinners on the table after a long day of school, packed our a part of my life for over 21 years. Her son and I lunches with little notes, and her homemade have been together since I was 14 — the start of warm cookies after the bus ride home from my wonderful teenage years. Chris and I used school. But, did I ever tell you about the time to skip school, and because the teachers knew she purposely drove down a road because we were dating, and we were “sick” on the same she saw a boy I went to school with driving a day, they would call our parents. BUSTED. We tractor? I had to have been in middle school, and my mom grew up on a little farm. There See COOKIN on Page 26

COOKIN

were sick. Sick in love, baby! (Told you I was a knucklehead in those years.) My mother-in-law pretty much stayed cool as a cucumber. Even on the worst day, I saw her, the day she and my father-in-law, John McElroy, came home to literally their whole house flooded, and we didn’t even know it because my brother-in-law, Darren McElroy, and Chris and I were upstairs. Well, somehow, the upstairs toilet overflowed, and it ran, and it ran, and it ran, and we never heard it. They literally had a waterfall running down their steps and water coming through the ceilings. The woman is a saint. How she didn’t kill us, I have no idea! She would then come home to a dozen import racer cars in her driveway of all our friends hanging out in their garage. They could never park in their own driveway on the weekends. Again, she never really lost her cool even though she had to carry in groceries twice the distance. She is the most thoughtful giving person and truly loves her sons, and well, ME. (hehehe) I also have a stepmother, Chrissie Perry, who I have grown to love over the years. Stepparents can be a tough one, and I am so lucky to have two stepparents who truly love me and care for me. Chrissie would do anything for my family and me. You can’t help but love her. She would do anything for anyone and treats me like a daughter. Texting me saying, “Honey do you need anything at Walmart? I’m going there today.” Just small gestures that go a long way. Mothers are so important, and it’s a day just to tell them you love them and go the extra mile to do something special for them. They carried us for nine months, birthed us, and they raised us to be the people we are today. Moms deserve

their own day, and then some. Some mommas may not have carried you physically, but I’m sure she carried you through your life, and she is still your momma no matter what! Happy Mother’s Day to all you beautiful women out there! Cheese Tortellini Bake Ingredients: • 1 (24oz.) container of refrigerated or frozen cheese tortellini • 2 lb. ground beef • 1 (24oz.) jar of tomato sauce • 1/2 cup chopped onions • 8 oz. cream cheese (cubed) • 1-2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese • 1/2 cup grated or shredded parmesan • Seasoning to taste Directions: Cook the tortellini according to the package directions; drain and set aside. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees and grease a 9×13 baking dish. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef with the seasoning. I use garlic salt, 1/2 cup chopped onion, pepper, and salt. Then add your sauce and let simmer for an hour. You don’t have to let it go that long, but do at least 20 minutes. It will really flavor your meat! Remove the excess grease from the browned beef and stir in cream cheese. Mix well. Gently mix your cooked tortellini in with the meat mixture and then pour it into your casserole dish; Generously top with shredded mozzarella and parmesan. Bake uncovered in the center rack of your oven for about 25-30 minutes until bubbly. Enjoy with my homemade cheesy bread and a fresh salad.

He will play and eat and hang out right near you, but he is still very unsure of being touched, as he is not used to it. He is looking for a kind and patient family to love on.

Bella would love to bring joy and zest into your household! She likes people and loves balls, and when the two go together, even better. She is three years old and is super smart. She is very attuned to her environment and will make you laugh with her perky smile. She is looking for a home with children over 12 and one where she can be the only dog, loved and adored.

County Hall Corner: Mellow Yellow By Larry Stout

G

overnor Wolf uses a traffic light metaphor to distinguish the phases of the state quarantine. Since mid-March, Lycoming County has been in a “Red” condition, which certainly translates into “Stop.” We have been mandated to stop almost every aspect of normal life, from education, entertainment, commerce, community life, etc. I think if the governor could find a way to require drones to drop food at our homes, I doubt if we would even be

allowed to shop for groceries. But some things are not allowed to “stop,” such as guarding prisoners at the County Prison. At the County Commissioners’ Meeting on Tuesday, May 5th, Warden Shoemaker remarked how difficult the restrictions have made his job, “No one has a playbook on this. We have to make it up as we go along. There has been lots of collaboration between state and county, sharing ideas. We have no ability to shut down, but we must deal with the situation as it is given.” This is just one example of the complexity

of life that county government is facing daily. And the tap dance will continue when the county transitions to the “Yellow” phase. Just like a traffic light, yellow signifies caution, which means to proceed with care to avoid mistakes or danger. So, just how do we go about doing that when we have NEVER been in this situation before? The Lycoming County Commissioners do not want to go into this phase by winging it. In a recent press release, they announced that the Lycoming County Government has established a County Planning and Coordination Cell to address the Re-opening of County Government Operations beyond the services it already continues to provide

while transitioning to the “Yellow Phase” as authorized by the Governor’s Office on May 8, 2020. What this will consist of will be representatives from the County Emergency Operations Center, Planning and Community Development Department, County Procurement Office, Information Services Department, Voter Services, Court Administration, Human Resources Department, Maintenance Department, Coroner’s Office, and the Prison. This Planning and Coordination Cell will analyze all CDC and State guidelines as they apply to the re-opening of County Government operations and the internal and external requirements to do so.

Mirabito are very, very deeply concerned about the immediate and long-term impact on every facet of our society. Being small businessmen themselves, they truly appreciate the struggle that rebooting our area’s economy will be. But during this ‘red’ period, they have also noted numerous examples from every demographic and livelihood that are suffering severely by the quarantine. To that end, county residents can be assured that the county government is going to do its very best to squeeze every opportunity for some degree of normalcy that can be found in the “yellow” phase. If they succeed, we may look back at this as our Mellow Yellow period. If not, it will be a Yelling Yellow one.

The purpose of all this is that the cell will identify, synchronize, and coordinate all current and future operational requirements with a deliberate review of all resource requirements to ensure the safest and most effective means of service delivery to the public. It will be a two-part process, as the cell will pay particular attention to the areas of current but also future policy development and integration, public affairs requirements, and lessons learned that ultimately identify long-term changes to Lycoming County Government operations. Those following the commissioners’ meetings on the county website (lyco. org), will note that Commissioners Scott Metzger, Tony Mussare, and Rick

works for us. It’s like the one unchanging thing in a world that is constantly changing. Frankly, that’s what us old skins don’t like about this pandemic — it has taken our old skin away — and we just want it back. Do you know what is in an old wineskin? It’s not a trick question: old wine. And as everybody knows, old wine is better wine. Luke quotes Jesus saying this: “And no one after drinking old wine wants the new, for they say, ‘The old is better.’” And that’s the problem. Us old skins like the old stuff. It was new wine when it flowed into our new skins, but over time, it aged, and so did our skins. We like old wine and it’s full-bodied character, rich bouquet and pronounced finish. New wine is for the uninitiated. It’s like

Q: A:

What precautions are you taking as an agent and company to reduce the spread of Covid-19 to buyers and sellers?

Q: A:

As a seller living in my home, what recommendations do you have to help protect against the spread of Covid-19?

Q: A:

How will this Pandemic affect how future open houses are conducted?

Q: A:

As a seller, can I limit the number of people previewing my home?

Q: A:

How long do you think these safety precautions will be in effect?

A seller can reduce the risk of spreading of Covid-19 by disinfecting all frequently touched surfaces before and after all showings. Sellers could also offer gloves and foot covers to all who enter their homes.

Currently there are no upcoming Open Houses, instead I see us moving toward more Virtual Open Houses. Premier utilizes 3D Scan technology to create a full 360 degree walkthrough of your home, complimentary to any seller. Combining this technology with our marketing strategy we will be able to host Virtual Open Houses that will attract more buyers to your home.

minister who has racked up 34 years in fulltime vocational ministry, church has been a BIG part of my life. With that little bit of background, you can understand why I would see myself as on old wineskin. I’m kind of set in my ways and very fond of church as I have always known it. Church for me has always been centered around the weekly Sunday morning worship experience. And for my entire life, that has meant going to church, finding a place to sit, singing some good songs, giving my offering, hearing an inspirational message and then heading out to eat. Sure, there’s other pieces to the puzzle, but when most of us old skins talk about going to church, that’s what we mean. And for those of us who grew up that way, that old skin is downright comfortable. It

drinking grape juice - too sweet and no body. New wine hasn’t fermented. It’s just not ready for the discriminating pallet of the refined spiritual connoisseur. And besides, as new wine ferments, it expands, and us old skins can’t risk a blowout. Nope, we prefer the conveniences and traditions we have grown to love. Old wine in old skins — a perfect fit. Back in the day, us old skins were actually new and soft and pliable. And when God poured the new wine of the Spirit into us, we stretched and grew as it matured and fermented within. Have we forgotten that we were new skins back when we were drinking in the new wine of the Spirit?

God is pouring out new wine and He is offering us new wineskins to receive it. Listen friends, when it comes to the Kingdom of God we have two choices: we can store ourselves away in a wine cave and pine for the good old days, or we can trade in our old skins for new ones and receive new wine. The choice is ours. The pandemic has created a quiet moment in history for the church in America to reflect, to evaluate, to think. Is what we’re doing working? Oh, it’s working for us old skins, but that’s not what I’m asking. What I’m asking is this: Are we able to receive new wine? Jesus warned us that God won’t pour new wine into old

spend the rest of your days struggling in the midst of these perishing multitudes, whatever it may cost you. “You must do it. With the light that is now broken in upon your mind and the call that is now sounding in your ears, and the beckoning hands that are now before your eyes, you have no alternative. To go down among the perishing crowds is your duty. Your happiness from now on will consist in sharing their misery, your ease in sharing their pain, your crown in helping them to bear their cross, and your heaven in going into the very jaws of hell to rescue them. What will you do?” I’ve made my choice. I’m trading in my old skin for a new one. I am convinced that the church is entering a season of new wine — and I don’t want to miss a drop of it. In it he includes a passionate call to leave our old skins behind to pursue the lost masses of humanity that are drowning in the sea of life: “You cannot hold back. You have enjoyed yourself in Christianity long enough. You have had pleasant feelings, pleasant songs, pleasant meetings, pleasant prospects. There has been much of human happiness, much clapping of hands and shouting of praises — very much of heaven on earth. “Now then, go to God and tell Him you are prepared as much as necessary to turn your back upon it all, and that you are willing to

What to Expect When You Return for Care By Don Owrey Chief Operating Officer, UPMC Susquehanna

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted many aspects of our lives, including the way we receive health care. People in communities across the nation are forgoing medically necessary care leading to unnecessary suffering and worsening health conditions. It’s normal to feel anxious about returning to a medical office or hospital or leaving your home. However, it should not prevent you from receiving the essential health care you need. During this pandemic, doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists, paramedics, pharmacists, environmental service workers, and everyone in the health care industry has been doing everything in their power to help you stay safe and get well, as well as ensure their own safety. As providers look forward to restarting in-person care, it’s important to know what you can expect when you return to the hospital or physician office. What to Expect UPMC is taking extraordinary precautions to maintain the safety of our patients, providers, and staff during this challenging time. Hospitals and medical office providers and staff continue to take the necessary steps to reduce the risk of infection and to make sure the facilities are safe for you and your loved ones. All patients, providers, and staff

are screened upon entry; patients, providers, and staff are required to wear masks, our facilities are sanitized throughout the day, and we continue to limit visitors to our facilities. Before your next scheduled visit, your provider’s office will call to confirm your appointment. During this phone call, you will be asked some screening questions regarding your potential exposure to COVID-19 as well as receive information to help you navigate your visit with minimal inconvenience, including updated visitor restrictions, instructions on how to checkin from your vehicle, parking information including the location of entrances where valet parking is available, and what screening you can expect upon entering the facility. What You Can Do In addition to understanding and following the instructions provided to you from your provider’s office, UPMC asks that you also observe the following guidelines: If you are experiencing a fever, shortness of breath, or cough, call your provider for guidance before leaving your house. These are common symptoms of COVID-19. Arrive on-time and call to check in before entering the facility. This allows our office staff to ask screening questions to determine your COVID-19 exposure risk, prepare for your visit, and provide you with any lastminute instructions or updates. If you’re going to a hospital for your office visit, you will be asked screening questions

The Roving Sportsman… That’s No Chickadee…! By Jon Pries

I

don’t know about you, but I am really, really ready for spring to arrive. Daytime temperatures seem to be running 10-12 degrees below normal almost every day, and yes, there were those couple of days that hit temperatures in the 70s, but generally it sure doesn’t seem like spring is upon us. There are, however, some usual harbingers of spring like the robins, numerous varieties of waterfowl that stop over briefly on their way north, and the emergence of the bright and flashy goldfinches. While I have lived in my current home on a secluded hilltop for over 20 years, I rarely have ever seen a cardinal outside my window. No more than two or three times over these last two decades have I caught a fleeting glance of a male cardinal as it stopped briefly on its way to a further destination. This year, for the first time, a mating pair of cardinals seemed to be settling in to nest nearby. I had seen both the male and female several times and often would be greeted by their unique song at daybreak. With

the cardinals in mind, I decided to break tradition. It was the afternoon of Thursday, April 16, that I — for the first time ever — decided to hang a bird feeder. I did so with the hopes of keeping the cardinals nearby and looked forward to seeing whatever other songbirds might appear. I filled it to the top with black oil sunflower seeds since they are a favorite of the cardinal, and I hung it on a limb of a large maple tree that was just outside the back door. It was a great spot since it was plainly visible from the kitchen sink, through the glass of the back door and from the southern facing windows of the family room. It was on the third day that the feeder was first noticed by a nuthatch, which was quickly joined by several white crowned sparrows. Every day thereafter, a new species of songbirds would show up. There were the blue jays, slate colored juncos, tufted titmouse, and then the goldfinches began to gather. At times there were 25-30 goldfinches on the ground, on the feeder and perched in the tree. What a sight! Over the next couple of weeks, the feeder was visited

the air from a 9mm handgun, he turned, slid down the tree and ran off! Needless to say, I immediately took the feeder down! I had contemplated hanging it during the daytime, when I am home or nearby, but unfortunately, it would be foolhardy to provoke another visit by a bear. Yes, the Pennsylvania Game Commission warns well-meaning folks every spring against using bird feeders in order to watch the visiting songbirds. And they are totally correct in warning against such activity. Black bears have an extremely keen sense of smell, and will come from long distances to investigate such an attraction. Once they come to the smell of the black oil sunflower seeds, they may just get into other mischief as well. It was a lesson learned the hard way. I hope you will learn from my mistake.

by a male rose breasted grosbeak, a rufous-sided towhee, chickadees, and, much to my enjoyment, both the male and female cardinals frequented the feeder as well. But all of that was about to change. On Monday, May 4, the feeder had been providing entertainment for 18 days. It was interesting to note the variety of birds using it and, at times, the large numbers of goldfinches that swarmed around it. And then it happened. It was 8:20 p.m. and the sun had settled in the western sky. I had just sat down to watch a little television and enjoy a hot-out-of-the-oven slice of pizza when a very bazaar picture appeared before me. I was stunned! I was speechless! There, framed in the glass panes of the back door was a 150-pound black bear, standing and perfectly balanced on the limb of the maple tree from which the feeder was hanging! It was just 12 feet beyond the back door! I slipped to the glass door of the family room for a closer look, only to see him take a bite out of the limb in hopes that he could bite through it and make the feeder fall to the ground. I slowly opened the door without drawing his attention, and then yelled and waved my arms. He raised his head and looked at me — not impressed at all! After firing 4 rounds in

My fly-tying friend Doug Zehner, who is one of the best fly-tiers I know, is great at making changes or creating completely new patterns and trust me they catch fish sometimes better than the old standbys. Finally, another good reason to tie your own flies is to give you an enjoyable and very satisfying activity to take part in while dealing with all this “stay-at-home” stuff. Even when this COVID-19 thing has finally passed other factors like bad weather can force you to be at home. It’s also a great winter activity unless of course you are out ice-fishing.

help you get set up and started in the right direction. Another good reason to get into tying your own flies is the satisfaction that comes with catching a trout or some other fish on something you personally created. Don’t get me wrong, there is always great excitement and satisfaction anytime you catch fish on an artificial lure but somehow, it’s even more exhilarating when you know your artificial creation fooled that wily trout or bass. There are plenty of basic patterns to follow but when creating your own you can always add, take away or change something to make it

1947, there will be a void in August this year for sure. I hope that everyone puts the Series on their bucket list for 2021.” Tom Speicher – “The decision to cancel the Little League World Series felt inevitable since early April, but reading the announcement still proved to be painful. There was part of me thinking a miracle could occur and that the 2020 Series could be played, signaling a return to some degree of normalcy. But obviously, Little League made the responsible and correct decision. “This would have been my 23rd year working the Series as the ‘Man in the Crowd.’ It’s hard to imagine late August without climbing the hills and stands of Lamade Stadium digging for stories and conducting interviews. I’ll miss connecting with old friends and making new ones, laughing with my broadcast colleagues, sliding down the hill live on the radio, and seeing countless smiles for a week and a half. So, on a personal level, I feel bad. “But I feel much worse for others. This would have been Ken Sawyer’s 50th year covering the Series. Hopefully, he’ll be able to mark that milestone in 2021 and receive the recognition he richly deserved this year. I wish that local business owners who rely on the economic boost provided by the Series can withstand the cancellation of the event and be on sound financial footing for the future. Most of all, I pray that all Little Leaguers whose hopes of playing in Williamsport were permanently dashed don’t lose their love for the game and the courage to dream.” Indeed, the mic’s been dropped on the 2020 Little League World Series but definitely not the way we had planned. Our broadcast crew looks forward to picking up that same mic again next year!

the years. The amazing thing about the Series is that it happens in my hometown. That gives me more pride than anything. When I came back to Williamsport after my days at the University of Miami, I didn’t know if it would be a planned brief stop, but the love of my hometown made it hard to ever leave. “So here we are 46 years later. I’ve been a lucky guy all these years, especially broadcasting, nationally, the Little League World Series. From the first game, my grandfather took me to as we sat way up on the hill in 1959 through the hundreds of games that I’ve had the opportunity to call, the World Series has been something special. This summer, there will be something missing for all of us. I know one thing. It will make me appreciate the Little League World Series in my hometown that much more when we put the headsets on once again in 2021.” Mike Fogarty – “This is a difficult situation for everyone. I hope it doesn’t derail LLB’s momentum. The Little League World Series has become one of the top sporting events of the summer. With this decision made, I’m sure the Headquarters staff has started to gear already, looking ahead to celebrate the Series’ 75th anniversary.” Tom O’Malley – “The Little League World Series is one of the best sporting events all year! It is something I look forward to each and every year. It is disappointing that it was cancelled but understandable due to health concerns. It is heartbreaking for the Little League players that won’t get an opportunity to play in Williamsport. Little League is one of the best memories of your lifetime. I look forward to a bigger and better World Series in 2021. Being the first time the World Series has been cancelled since its inception in

them discouraged and they quit. A decent understanding of the basic stroke will ensure your experiences in a kayak go rather smoothly. It’s important to know that the best paddlers use the least amount of energy. Sit up straight and face forward. Keep those hands and wrists in line with your arms. Lightly grip the paddle. Don’t strangle it. It may seem natural to use just your arms, but the core is much stronger and will help you last a lot longer. Rotate your torso from left to right instead, making sure your back is pressed against the seat at all times. Sitting forward will not only shift your center, but it will also cause you to use more energy. To make a stroke, rotate your body to the right while reaching forward with the left

side of the paddle. Simply dip the blade into the water and pull back firmly while rotating your torso. Remember not to lean forward. When the left blade exits- the right should enter the water on the opposite side of the kayak. Pull back firmly and repeat the process. It’s working E.T. It’s working! It’s best to get started on a quiet lake or lazy river. I highly recommend Rose Valley in the 17728. Most streams and creeks can overwhelm those new to kayaking. Battling the current and avoiding snags shouldn’t be done the first time out. Once you think you are ready — plan a group outing down the Susquehanna River or Big Pine. Make sure you get permission from Dr. Levine. Coordinating with friends makes the put in and take out rather easy. Be sure to pack plenty of water, snacks,

sunscreen, and extra layers of clothing. A waterproof drybag is highly recommended. It comes in handy if you plan to take your cell phone or camera. Have dry clothes available — especially in the early spring. I always keep a change of clothes inside the car just in case. The most important piece of equipment on any kayaking trip is your Personal Flotation Device. There are several different types of PFDs, but a Type III is the only way to go. You should look for a vest that is comfortable, fits well but not too tightly and helps you stay afloat. It is required that every kayaker has a PFD in their boat. Give a hoot. Don’t pollute. Enjoy the outdoors and leave no trace. Hopefully this little write up will get you on the water soon. Stay safe. Cheers.

her on and off the car. It’s my personal Edmond Fitzgerald. Gordon Lightfoot. Kayaking is very beneficial to both the mind and body. It provides a great exercise and another way to enjoy the spectacular scenery of our splendid waterways. From a distance, kayaking seems rather simple. True, but I will say that it is a tad more technical than handling a canoe. There is no need to buy a kayak before you actually try it. Paddling isn’t for everyone and I highly recommend that you borrow a buddy’s boat first. Call me. You can use Teach’s. While your friends will be able to get you out on the water, there’s no guarantee they’ll actually teach you the proper technique. Many rookies develop bad habits that strain their neck and back, and tire their arms. This eventually leaves
