Facts, Fiction and You’re Fired, Governor Wolf and Dr. Levine

A

tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on it to Mr. Paul Butters who reached out to me and was very disappointed that there would be no traditional Memorial Day Mass and Remembrance at Saint Boniface Cemetery. For whatever reason, the guidelines the Catholic Church are following deems it nonessential per Governor Wolf. I’m going to leave that alone. What I’m not going to leave alone is the efforts of Mr. Butters in organizing a Memorial Day Remembrance in honor of our fallen, which he approached as his patriotic duty in honor of not just our fallen heroes but as a service to our living veterans that hold this event near and dear to their heart. The event will have already taken place as you’re reading this, but please always remember the fallen and honor our living servicemen and women every day. A simple “thank you for your service” goes a long way. And give a shoutout to Mr. Butters if you see him. I’m going to switch hats here just so this doesn’t get redundant. A tip of my Red, White, and Blue Damn Proud to be an American hat to Mr. Tim Miller. I attended a meeting for the local small business community he organized to educate and unite these special folks about the COVID-19 debacle. So many of our restaurant owners, barbers, and stylists, salon owners, self-employed, and chasers of the American Dream have been put between a rock and a hard spot by Governor Wolf ’s decision making. I am passionate in my stance with all these folks; their businesses should have never been closed down per their constitutional rights. Trust in We the People to make the proper

decision to patronize, worship, or close a business or church. For more information about Tim Miller’s effort and some great local folks that are working along his side, go to Facebook and join Lycoming County Non-Essential Businesses for Liberty. A double hat tip to Lycoming County DA Ryan Gardner. DA Gardener was at the meeting and stated his stance. He, “will not take action against businesses that reopen against state orders.” He stressed the uptick in narcotic activity and violent crime that requires his office to diverge from enforcing Governor Wolf ’s reopening restrictions. “To help ensure the continued safety and welfare of all county residents, the allocation of his office’s resources must be applied to the prosecution of criminals engaging in violent and drug-related activities. Business owners in this position are not criminals, and it’s unfair to hang over their heads the threat of prosecution for violations of the governor’s orders.” DA Gardener is exactly what America needs in its elected. This support of our local business community will not be forgotten. I probably should not write this, but it took a huge set to take this stance publicly! The newly elected DA is doing a great job for the citizens of Lycoming County. Onto some facts from Lycoming County Coroner Charles Kiessling. At press time, there were 152 COVID-19 cases recorded since February. We have had 17 deaths in Lycoming County. All the deaths have been nursing home residents who had severely compromised health conditions prior to contracting the virus.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Manor Care Jersey Shore residents, staff, and their families. Eightyfour individuals at this facility have tested positive for COIVD-19. This has resulted in 16 residents passing. My quick math — 114,000 residents of Lycoming Jim County, 17 deaths. A Webb, Jr. mortality rate of point .0001. Ninety-three of the reported 152 are in the Jersey Shore area or 61%. So, there are 59 cases spread across the other 1,000 or so square miles of Lycoming County. My official unofficial report of the numbers — because some may not reveal if they tested positive for the disease — 0-cases involving grocery store employees, restaurant workers, barbers-stylists-hairdressers. Do you know anybody that has tested positive? That is not elderly or of compromised health? 80% of the deaths nationwide are elderly within nursing care and rehabilitation facilities. The governor, the Department of Health, and all these scientists and experts predicting this data must be held accountable. Their batting average is .250, not to mention their cooking of the books of the actual numbers. We have put the state of Pennsylvania and our Nation into a crisis that has never been seen in American history over nonfactual information provided by these so-called experts and elected leaders. The truth must be told. Governor Wolf, Dr. Levine, you should be the first to be fired and then charged. It is my belief the Coronavirus moved through our area in January and February. Not that it can’t have a resurgence, not that there won’t be more positive tests and death, because there will be. I believe the high point of the virus in our area was during this time

period. I pray to God that we’ll all have built natural immunities by being exposed, that is the only proven way for a human being to be protected. The non-common sense way our government, many corporate businesses, and fellow Americans have gone about addressing this pandemic is beyond comprehension. With absolutely 0 scientific facts of support or knowledge through the collection of accurate data and the application of common sense being used for decision making. No one in our area was wearing masks when I believe the virus went through our area or up to the point Governor Wolf crossed our constitutional boundaries and demanded the closure of businesses based upon his determination of essential or nonessential and declaring all to wear a mask. So, I’m to believe that not one grocery store worker in Lycoming County, one barber or anybody, was infected prior to that period other than basically everyone that resides or works in the nursing home? We all need to wake up to the reality that there is going to be death caused by the virus, and certain Americans are more at risk. We can never again react this way. We must reopen America immediately, learn from our mistakes, and practice safe space and common sense — which should occur every day anyways. If we do this, our Great Nation can return to pre-COVID normality. Yes, I believe we can go back to being the United States of America before this event. There is absolutely no reason why we can’t other than fear — false evidence against reality — an overzealous government exceeding their intended powers, and the mainstream media, which is treasonous. It is entirely up to “We the People” to determine if we’ll be the Land of the Free or the home of the afraid. God Bless America.

• All 81 voting precincts in Lycoming County will be open on June 2 from 7:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. A list of Election Day polling places may be viewed and downloaded from the Voter Services website at www.lyco.org/Departments/Voter-Services. • Voters who applied to vote by absentee ballot or mail-in ballot may only vote in person on June 2 by PROVISIONAL BALLOT. Absentee voters and mail-in voters are advised to return their voted absentee and mail-in ballots to Voter Services before the close of polls at 8:00 p.m. on June 2 rather than attempt to vote by provisional ballot at the polling place. • The polling place for Loyalsock Township 2nd Precinct has been temporarily relocated to the Loyalsock Community Recreation Center, located at 1607 Four Mile Drive. Voters who normally vote at St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church need to report to the Recreation Center on June 2. • Polling places will accommodate fewer voters at a time in order to promote social distancing, so expect longer lines — especially during peak voting periods of 7:00 a.m.- 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. Lines may extend outside some polling places to keep voters separated. • Voters are strongly urged to wear a mask in order to protect themselves and our poll workers. • Hand sanitizer will be made available at all polling places. Voters are strongly urged to apply hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the polling place. • Although pens will be made available at the polling place, voters are strongly urged to bring their own pen. Black or blue ballpoint pens are preferred to ensure readable marks on the ballot. • Please respect and appreciate our poll workers, who are making our democracy work under challenging circumstances. The poll workers at your precinct are our family, friends, and neighbors. They are some of the county’s finest public servants. Questions may be directed to the Office of Voter Services at (570) 327-2267.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

www.webbweekly.com

Dear Graduates, You have lost a lot this year. The pandemic turned the world off – and it happened at just the wrong time for your moment of celebration. Over the past three months, all of the traditional rites of passage that accompany a senior year were taken from you. That’s a tough loss. But we’ve discovered something about you – you’re tough too. We haven’t heard you complain or whine. Instead, you’re adapting to this new reality and making the best of your circumstances. In case no one has told you yet, that’s exactly the kind of outlook you will need to make it in this world. Everyone who adapts learns how to thrive no matter the circumstances. The Bible refers to such people as overcomers. Life is full of curve balls and hurdles. And just about the time you have it figured out, someone switches it to fast balls and high jumps. Life is constantly changing – so adapting to overcome will be a life-long pursuit. Paul the Apostle understood. He faced one heartache and obstacle after another. Yet he declared that he had found the secret to being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, or living in plenty or want. His secret? I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength. See Philippians 4:11-13. Those who adapt to overcome often discover that obstacles can actually be launching pads. The class of 2020 will forever be unique. That’s right, one-of-a-kind. In other words, you are special. If you’re willing to adapt and overcome, the challenges you face will actually become your opportunities to soar. Remember, you can do it all through Christ who gives you strength. It has been our honor to watch you grow into adulthood. We remember when we held you in the nursery and taught your Sunday School lessons and hung out with you at youth group. You are now a treasure stored deeply in our hearts. God has a special purpose for each and everyone of you and we are eager to watch His plan unfold. We love you and are so very proud of you. Now go! Overcome! -Your Church Family at Faith Wesleyan

onducting an election in the shadow of a global pandemic is quite a challenge, but the folks at the Lycoming County Voter Services are meeting that challenge. They have outlined for Webb Weekly what procedures they and voters will follow when conducting and voting in this election held under very unique circumstances. “COVID-19 has required a weeks-long effort RESIDENTIAL to verify availability of polling & place facilities and change one COMMERCIAL SERVICES: facility; verify of poll workers and Fullavailability Service/Maintenance recruit replacements Spring Repair eight precincts; procure protective equipment and supPanel Replacement plies for all 81 precincts; and develop new guidance, policies, and procedures for poll workers and voters to follow on Election Day,” Forest Lehman, Lycoming County Director of Elections and Registration, told Webb Weekly. He added, “Voters have embraced mail-in voting, but counties across the state are struggling to handle the volume. We needed to contract with an outside company to manage our print/ mail service; we needed to purchase

new letter-opening equipment, and we needed to build a new, higher throughput ballot canvassing operation.” The general information about Primary Election Day, June 2 includes: Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. that day at all 81 election precincts in Lycoming County, The list of polling place sites is available at Voter Services website (https://www. lyco.org/Departments/Voter-Services). One polling place has been temporarily relocated for June 2. Loyalsock Township 2nd precinct will vote at the Loyalsock Community Recreation Center at 1607 Four Mile Drive, instead of at St. Ann’s Catholic Church. There will be various in-person safety precautions taken at the polling places. In-person voting will look different on June 2. We are implementing additional health and safety precautions to minimize risk to voters and poll workers who are voting in person. Polling places will have fewer voting areas set up and will accommodate fewer voters at a time to promote social distancing and limit overall occupancy. You can expect longer lines that extend outdoors during peak voting periods.

Why do people carve their initials in a tree or place their hands in cement?

Gazette and Bulletin June 4, 1927 Lycoming Manufacturing Co. Main Plant is Shaken by Dynamite Explosion

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he lives of several hundred employees on the night force of the plant were endangered when an unknown man attempted to dynamite the Oliver Street plant of the Lycoming Manufacturing Co. last night about 10:30 o’clock. Haste or lack of knowledge in the handling of explosives saved both the building and the lives of the workmen and while extensive damage was done, the building was not materially affected by the explosion, which shook the neighborhood and was heard throughout the western part of the city. No one was injured. The explosives were placed in one

of two holes, each about a footand-a-half deep, which were dug along the west side of the shipping department and about 15 feet from the north wall of the assembly rooms. When the explosion came, several men rushed to a window and were in time to see a man whom they described as being of short, stocky build and wearing glasses, dash toward High Street. Several employees pursued him but were only in time to see him jump into a car that had the motor running. The car supposedly sped eastward on High Street before anyone could note its license plate or take up further pursuit. The damage by the explosion will probably reach $2,000.

Loyalsock Animal Hospital Serving the Area Since 1968

D

r. Lester Beck came to Williamsport in 1967, where he worked independently in mixed animal practice until he founded the Loyalsock Animal Hospital in 1968. Mr. Gary Schick, who is currently a certified veterinary technician and hospital manager at Loyalsock Animal Hospital, began working with Dr. Beck at this time. In 1970, Loyalsock Animal Hospital began serving small animals only. Dr. Beck added a new wing to the building in 1974, and the hospital has experienced steady growth ever since. In 2001, Dr. Knoebel and Dr. Graham purchased the practice from Dr. Beck and continued to build upon his foundation. The Feline Center opened in 2005, adding some much-needed space for feline friends. In 2014, the front of the hospital was completely renovated and expanded, allowing for a much larger reception area, an expanded pharmacy and an extra exam room. Veterinary Medicine for Your Pets Bring your companion pets to their fullservice hospital for a variety of services. They provide excellent preventative care, including vaccinations, yearly checkups, and senior wellness checks, as well as treatment for illnesses. Additionally, they offer advice on how to care for your pets properly. Veterinary Medicine Includes: Behavior Counseling, Laboratory Services, Preventative Care, Radiology, Internal

Medicine, Ultrasonography, Dentistry, Pet Surgery, and more. Dog Boarding Whether for a single day or an entire week, we offer comfortable boarding solutions for your dog so that you don’t have to worry about him or her while you’re away. Your dog receives plenty of exercise during the day, including indoor runs and four outdoor walks. A Valuable Part of the Community Loyalsock Animal Hospital has become a very important part of the community, hosting open houses where they welcome students from the middle and high schools to observe, and conducting tours for elementary classes and various local clubs. They contribute to local charities and help sponsor groups, from the Williamsport Symphony to the Loyalsock Boosters. Additionally, they support the Lycoming Animal Protection Society (LAPS), the Lycoming County SPCA an d the Loyalsock Township Dog Park. Over the years, they have sponsored over 30 therapy dogs through Canine Partners for Life. Here for You & Your Pets At Loyalsock Animal Hospital, they understand that taking care of your pet is really taking care of a member of your family. Through good times and bad, they look at their profession as a calling and wouldn’t have it any other way. Loyalsock Animal Hosptial is located at 1900 Northway Rd., Williamsport and you can reach them at 570-326-1709.

ue to COVID-19, the James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., has decided to postpone the Author Gala fundraiser featuring best-selling author David Baldacci to fall 2021. “In an effort to keep our staff and donors safe, the library decided it would be best to hold this event next fall, when it is safer to gather in large groups,” said Barbara S. McGary, executive director of the library. Those who would like to be updated about the rescheduled event for 2021 are encouraged to email Robin Glossner, the library’s development director, at rglossner@

jvbrown.edu to be added to a communication list. “We look forward to offering an additional virtual fundraising opportunity later this year,” Glossner said. While this is a devastating hit to the library’s fundraising efforts – this is the library’s only fundraising event each year — donations to support the library can be made anytime by visiting jvbrown.edu and clicking “donate” at the upper-right corner. The library is continuing to offer virtual programming for all ages and holds pick up service during this time.

HOME COOKIN crockpot recipe with a pizza spin off. SEE! Cheese on a pepper!? Makes everything better. It’s like a Band-Aid for foods we hate. Thanks cheese.

Stuffed Pizza Turkey Peppers Pizza stuffed into a pepper that you don’t have to feel guilty about! Ingredients: • 4-5 Bell peppers (Colors are up to you!) • 1/2 cup diced onion • 1 tsp minced garlic • 1 1/2 ground turkey • 3 cups tomato sauce • 2 cups brown rice • 1 tsp Italian seasoning • 1/4 tsp Salt • 1 cup mozzarella cheese (save 1/4 cup for topping) • 3/4 cup chopped pepperoni (save a few pieces for topping) Directions: Spray the crockpot with a nonstick cooking spray and place a 1/4 inch of water on the bottom. Start cooking meat. Add the turkey, garlic and onion to a pot over medium heat and cook through. Once meat is cooked, add the tomato sauce. Let simmer for 20-30 minutes. The longer it simmers the better it tastes!

While your meat is simmering, cook your brown rice according to the box. After simmering, add rice, pepperoni, seasonings, and 3/4 cup mozz cheese to the meat mixture. Stir well. Scoop mixture into each pepper and place into a crockpot. Cook on low for 6 hours. Top with cheese, a few pepperoni pieces, dash of Italian seasoning and melt for a few minutes, then dig in! I found serving it in a deep small bowl was easiest to eat. *Note, if your peppers don’t take up your full crockpot, add a ball jar with water on the bottom to help your peppers not to fall over. *

in Nebraska, who were overwhelmed by the concern expressed by their fellow farmers back east. What is amazing about this story is that it was organized and accomplished in just two weeks, spearheaded by Bret Taylor, a farmer in Washington Township, whose farm served as the storage sight and then the departure point for the aid to Nebraska. Mr. Taylor’s right-hand woman and tireless assistant for this activity was his sixteen-yearold daughter, Katelyn Taylor, otherwise known as the Dairy Maid Princess of Lycoming County. Katelyn was featured in this column in 2019 for her stellar work in promoting dairy products. With fervent intensity,

Is this a good time to invest into Real Estate? Well, we certainly live in more uncertain times than before, but even in more stable times, no one knows for sure what the market is going to do. Trying to time the market perfectly usually doesn’t work out. The fact is that interest rates are at all time lows and real estate has always been a good long term investment, so while it might make sense to be a little more conservative in analyzing a property, it is still a good time to invest.

What makes a property a good investment? Simply put, there are many different factors that could make a property a good investment. The biggest factor for all types of investments is return on investment (ROI) or how much money it will make you. Being able to accurately calculate a property’s ROI, or its capitalization rate for multi-family or commercial real estate, is a big step in deciding if a property is a good investment. Your Realtor should be able to help you with calculating these equations and analyzing the results for the area of the investment.

How can I learn more about Real Estate Investing? There are many books and websites dedicated to real estate investing. Some of them are great, others are not. Biggerpockets.com is a favorite of mine for information on investing in all things real estate. But, the best way to learn is to find someone who is doing it successfully, buy them a beer, and ask questions...pay attention! Finding out habits and strategies of successful people and doing them is never a bad choice!

How long does it take to get a return on my investment? As with most things in real estate, it depends! For the more common types of investments, like buying and holding rental properties, it is almost always a great long term investment. As for fixing and flipping properties, they can be more of a short term investment that can REAL ESTATE AGENCY range anywhere from 2-6 months or more, depending on the nature of work being done, to see a return investment. n a recent LION featuring the under-appreciated, one of those cited were farmers. A major story concerning farmers that happened this time last year somehow flew under the radar. Severe storms in Nebraska caused a massive hardship to farmers in that state that became so desperate the state authorities set up a livestock shelter at the fairgrounds in Lincoln for their survival. But the animals needed food, and this is where the farmers from this area rose to the occasion. The Pennsylvania Farm Bureau sent out an SOS, and the Lycoming County/ Union County farmers accepted the challenge. Nine trailer loads of hay were contributed from farmers throughout the area, and volunteers offered to haul it to Nebraska. A local food manufacturer donated a 53-foot van filled with nutritional food. The event became such a big deal, a crowd assembled to send the caravan off, and a local pastor came to pray a blessing over the trip and the supplies. Others in the state joined in with this humanitarian mission, but the Lycoming County contribution was by far the largest in the state. This shipment was enthusiastically received

she did programs in daycare centers, senior citizens groups, public groups of all kinds, and even lobbied state representatives and senators in Harrisburg with milkshakes. But, when the COVID crisis kicked in, the Dairy Maid could not do her work in person, so she decided to go virtual like others. On the Lycoming County Dairy Promotion website on Facebook, Katelyn now offers regular weekly virtual events. Monday is Mouth Watering Mondays, which is a dairy dinner entree. Saturday Savory Sweets involves a dessert that involves three dairy products. And now,

in May, she has added a daily dairy trivia question. She currently has 305 followers, and they all must be well fed as well as entertained! As Katelyn Taylor will be entering her senior year at Montgomery Area High School in the fall, her eyes are on the Pennsylvania State Dairy Maid contest to (hopefully) be held in Harrisburg in September. She will be competing against thirty other regional Dairy Maids like herself, and be asked to make a speech, a skit, a radio spot, and also display a scrapbook of her activities this past year, as well as a folding (tri-fold)

among farmers. Katelyn has lined up the food and a speaker who can share a message on this topic, but the one great variable is, of course, what events will be permitted at that time. Even if Katelyn Taylor is not permitted to host her banquet, which would be a terrible shame not just for her sake but also for many area farmers, she should have all our support for the future. It is hard to imagine a better representative for dairy promotion than this incredibly dedicated, energetic, creative, and personable young lady. Katelyn has one more venture she hopes she can accomplish to help her gain the Diamond Level 4-H Award, which is the highest rank (equivalent to an Eagle Scout). She must host an event of community service. What Katelyn has been planning for months is a banquet on June 27th at the First United Methodist Church in Muncy for those in the dairy industry. The topic she has chosen is Mental Health and Farmer Awareness, as suicide has become a serious concern

same as BB creams but focus heavily was a huge fan of tinted on color correction (which is what moisturizers when they burst the CC stands for). And the most on the beauty scene in the different, but still closely related face late 90s, but then BB & CC makeup, is foundation, which tends creams came along, and I got swept to have a wider range of colors, and up in that cosmetic craze. During can build up coverage thicker than pandemic times, I’ve rediscovered any of the others. So for days when the tinted moisturizer, which has there’s really no need for a full face always been a bit of an underdog of makeup (which is almost every in the makeup playoffs. Tinted day, nowadays), tinted moisturizer moisturizers can be used to even out skin tone, provide some sun Bernadette can work both as a skin treatment protection, and moisturize while Ulsamer and provide a bit of polish to your skin tone for those Zoom meetings illuminating your skin. The best tinted moisturizers are more than and FaceTimes. Laura Mercier makes two great tinted just glorified day creams, and there’s an option out there that works for every skin moisturizers. of finishing powder, and yes, I did look nice. Unlike previously mentioned products, Glossier does not come with built-in SPF, so as we roll slowly out of strict quarantine and into summer, I’ll be looking to switch things up for coverage and protection as we begin to head outdoors. Even if you regularly use BB & CC creams, as well as foundation, tinted moisturizer is worth having a place in your makeup bag, if only for the convenience of application. Tinted moisturizer is the ultimate BOGO: You nourish your skin while getting coverage, all with easy application. Most people are not feeling a full face of foundation during these days at home, but when you want to brighten or even out your complexion, having a tinted moisturizer at hand is a win-win for your face.

Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturize Broad Spectrum SPF 30. This tinted cream has a vitamin C derivative to combat patchy skin with mineral-rich seawater and kopara in the mix to hydrate and revive your complexion. Lastly, there’s my personal favorite Glossier’s Perfecting Skin Tint, which is not the usual lotion-based formula, but rather an oil-like substance that melds with your skin for sheer coverage and a dewy finish, if I do say so myself. I use this product almost daily, and it doesn’t look like I’m even wearing makeup, but more so that my skin looks smooth and awake. It’s even fooled my husband who recently said, and I quote, “Why do you have so much makeup, you don’t even need it, you look great.” Full disclosure: I was wearing tinted moisturizer, eyebrow pencil/gel, mascara, and lip balm, and I swiped on a bit

County Hall Corner: The Real Deal District Attorney By Larry Stout

T

he office of county district attorney has traditionally been a stepping stone to higher office. It comes from the nature of the position itself. Law enforcement officials arrest an offender, the courts will try them, but it is the DA’s office that prosecutes. The DA is the one who, in effect, determines how justice will be served. They will get the credit for a successful prosecution and take the blame when it is not. Unfortunately, if a particular DA is more interested in his or her future career than objectivity and fair-mindedness in dealing with crime, they can be selective in their actions (only prosecuting slam-dunk cases) which could result in a sky-high prosecution rate without a corresponding decline in the crime rate. This is why when Ryan Gardner was elected as Lycoming County District Attorney last November, there was a normal amount of skepticism that he could just be grooming himself for greater things. However, there was something electric about his passion that did not appear to be put on. The general attitude was that time would tell. Well, after five months in office, it is time to officially bury any doubts about

this man’s integrity of motives. Ryan Gardner is as real as they get — a Real Deal District Attorney. Back in February, I wrote a feature on DA Gardner, and noted how he had spent every day after his election to prepare for his new office. In fact, it was his fulltime job (without pay) for two months to interview every employee in the DA’s office, reviewing their job description and accessing their work ethic and values. He was deeply disturbed in a case log that was stuck in excess of 400, and he felt that it was not as much a rise in crime as much as disorganization and inefficiency in the office itself. Gardner devoted hundreds and hundreds of hours in studying these problems before he formally took office in January. At the first County Commissioner’s Meeting of the new year, Gardner

DA Gardner concluded his press conference by posing the question, “how to efficiently harness all relevant criminal information data on a countywide level and quickly process this material and then distribute same to law enforcement?” His answer was the creation of an Intelligence Office in the Detective Unit which would be served by the County Information Office or Intel Officer. He has selected as the first person to serve in this position, Loretta Clark, noting that she is an outstanding individual and the first female detective in this county in the past ten years. Information is one of the most important weapons in any battle, and this position will serve as another valuable tool in the war against crime. And as if this was not enough, DA Gardner also announced that he is reopening a very old Williamsport cold case involving a 23-year-old mother, Gale Matthews, who was murdered along with her five-year-old daughter Tamara Burkheiser on September 1, 1994. It is extremely exceptional that a district attorney would want to make public such a venture, but Gardner does not play by the rules of the status quo. In his public appearances, he always makes it clear, “No crime will be committed in this county that will not be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” A heads-up for all would-be criminals in Lycoming County — this guy is the real deal, and he really means it.

presented his massive reorganization plan which involved eliminating clerical positions, shuffling workloads and hiring two new detectives. The new Commissioner board had been thoroughly briefed on the plan and wholeheartedly approved it. Almost overnight, the case load rapidly declined as rapidly as efficiency went up. Best of all, it was evident that the atmosphere had changed. People in the DA’s office were now enjoying going to work because they could see fruit coming from their efforts. What is so impressive about Ryan Gardner is that he is not resting on his laurels. At a county press conference on Monday, May 18th, the district attorney made some amazing statements. He outlined the design of the department (which it seems he is always tweaking), and noted that he is beefing up investigation units at the expense of clerical staff. This has been made possible by upgrading software so Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs), who have a broad job description, can accomplish their duties more quickly and efficiently. Gardener also singled out the importance of the Narcotics Enforcement Unit, that had a particularly challenging job for he noted, “the criminal mind is this area is very much advanced.” All of this moving and shaking is like an army commander who is trying to move his troops around where they are most needed to fight the battle they are in.

hile trying to stay active during pregnancy, women face many challenges both physically and mentally. The good news is that now that the baby has arrived, you can focus on getting back to your pre-pregnancy activity level or work toward a new goal to help you feel your best. The Benefits of Being Active • Regular exercise after pregnancy has many physical and mental benefits, including: • Promotes weight loss, particularly when combined with reduced calorie intake • Improves your cardiovascular fitness • Strengthens and tone abdominal muscles • Boosts your energy level • Relieves stress • Promotes better sleep • Reduces symptoms of postpartum depression How to Start No matter what, it’s very important to listen to your body and ease back into an active lifestyle. Named after the credit union’s former CEO, the scholarship awards two area seniors with $1,000 each to help defer the cost of college expenses. “With the rising cost of college, we are fortunate to be able to play a small part in helping students manage their expenses” said Horizon Chief Banding Officer, Michael Patterson. “These students’ credentials were impressive. I’m sure their parents are proud of their accomplishments, and we wish them well in college and beyond.” The 2020 scholarship recipients are Amber Fry and Gabriel Manetta. need to wait a few weeks. It’s best to start slow and set incremental goals. Consider some of the following lowimpact exercises to get you started: Walking – Start out with a casual pace and go for time, 15 to 30 minutes, not distance. Work your way up to a quicker pace and longer distances. Use this as an opportunity to spend some time with baby by taking them along in a stroller which adds a light strength-training element to the walk. Floor bridges – Lie on your back with knees bent, feet flat on the floor, arms by your sides. Contract your core and squeeze butt to lift off the floor, pressing heels into the ground. This helps engage and tone your core. Kegel exercises – Sit with feet shoulderwidth apart, with your hands on your hips. Contract your pelvic muscles, as if you’re trying to stop from urinating, and stand. These exercises help strengthen the muscles that support the uterus, bladder, and bowels, and promote perineal healing, regain bladder control, and strengthen pelvic floor muscles. Knee pushups – Kneel with your hands on the floor in front of you, wider than your shoulders. Lower your torso to the floor and back up to starting position. Babies grow quickly and pushups help build the upper body strength you’ll appreciate for the countless hours you’ll spend carrying and picking up your baby. Yoga – If you did prenatal yoga, you probably learned a thing or two about

Breastfeeding alone can burn an extra 400-500 calories a day, on top of exercise. Make up the calories with healthy snacks throughout the day. Most importantly, stay hydrated. Busy moms often forget to drink water throughout the day. If you are dehydrated your energy can dip and you may not be

The Roving Sportsman… It’s Crunch Time! By Jon Pries

hether you are seeking to fill your second spring gobbler tag, or you are still looking to connect with the first bird, there is still time to use some late season tactics to get the job done. You have until close of season on Saturday, May 30 to seal the deal and all-day hunting is now in effect, which means that the legal shooting hours are from one-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset. The longer you can stay afield, the greater the possibility of success. If you must limit your time, concentrate on the early and late parts of the day and employ some of these late season tactics. Roosting a gobbler: Late afternoon is a great time to locate a gobbler in one of his favorite feeding areas, be it an area heavy with oak trees or grape vines, an old picked corn field where some residual corn may still be on the ground, or an abandoned field that may have a fresh crop of insects in it. If you are watching from afar, note the exact location where the old bird leaves the field and enters the woods to head to his roost. This is a perfect

spot to set up near in the pre-dawn darkness, as a bird will often return to a field or forest opening via the exact spot where he exited it the night before. If you happen to be closer to the bird and in a position to do so, you might consider setting up to intercept him as he leaves the field headed to his overnight roost spot. Calling should be soft and very limited, and consider merely scratching in the leaves to imitate a feeding turkey and don’t do any calling at all. If the gobbler is interested, he may very well divert his path to his roost to check out your scratching. Finally, if he roosts near your location, you should be able to hear his wing beats as he flaps his way up to the roost. If not, try to avoid making any turkey sounds at all, but instead, use a locator call such as an owl or crow call to make him shock gobble and give away his location. Wait until well after total darkness to slip away, otherwise there is a good chance he will spot any movement you make. Limit your calling: By this time in the season, most gobblers have heard it all, and have heard it many times from one hunter or another. No matter what calls you

Fact:

Air Conditioning & Heating is responsible for approximately 44% of the energy bill.

Remember, if there is any hunting pressure at all in the area you hunt, the gobblers will be very cautious in their approach to check out any calling, and more than likely will come in silently. With warmer temperatures finally upon us, the turkeys will be more apt to be active throughout the day. If temperatures become too warm, they may loaf a bit and will hang out in shaded areas until the temperatures cool down. Focus your time on the early or late hours of the hunting period, but stay with it if possible throughout the day — you just never know when an old Tom will become interested and respond to your calls.

make, chances are good that someone has already tried to lure him in with whatever you may throw at him. It is time now to limit your calling and to tone it down a bit. Soft calls of shorter duration are in order, and scratching in the leaves with or without additional calling may be your best bet. Using a stick, make three strokes through the leaves in a sequence of scratch, scratch (short pause) scratch. If you add any turkey calls at all, make them soft and of short duration, either a soft purr, soft cluck or two or a soft yelp. Then repeat the scratching of the leaves. Be prepared to sit still for nearly an hour after the scratching and calling.

While the Baltimore Oriole is still quite common, there may have been some decline, probably partly due to the loss of our elms trees, which were a favorite nesting site for orioles. Baltimore Orioles prefer open woods over deeply wooded areas and can often be found in orchards and parks in towns. Baltimore Orioles are found throughout northeastern and central United States and even into Canada. The orioles’ winter in the tropics often starting their fall migration as early as July or August. Their nests are quite unique; it’s a bagshaped hanging nest made of woven plant fibers, grapevine, grass, and even yarn or string and lined with plant down and hair if available. The nests hang from the end

of a tree branch, usually higher up in a tree. This is probably no secret to bird watchers, but if you want to attract some of these colorful birds to your backyard, put some sliced oranges out back and keep your eyes open. Actually, Baltimore Orioles like fruit, and they have been known to go to hummingbird feeders as well. Orange seems to be a color that attracts themprobably because people put sweet tasting oranges out for them. These orioles also feed on insects like beetles, wasps, spiders, grasshoppers, and especially caterpillars. They will also eat various kinds of berries. Now you may want to go buy a bag of oranges and get your own neighborhood I captured this photo just before competition going. writing the article.

showing up regularly. All of this attention to the Baltimore Orioles lately has caused me to delve more into the subject, so here is a bit of what I have found. The male oriole will display a bright orange to a yellow-orange breast and neck with black showing up elsewhere; also, there will be white bars through the wings. The female will display an orange-yellow breast and a yellowishbrown on the upper parts with somewhat darker wings. Be careful not to confuse the Rufous-sided Towhee with the oriole; the Towhee is a duller orange-brown on the breast, and it lacks light bars through the wings. Also, the Towhee will be more often seen scratching in the leaves on the ground.

and the use of saunas, steam rooms, pools and cryotherapy chambers. Hitting in indoor cages is discouraged and the use of batting gloves encouraged. ‘Batting practice pitchers are to wear masks, dugout telephones disinfected after each use. Players may not touch their face to give signs, and they’re not allowed to lick their fingers. Fielders are encouraged to retreat several steps away from the baserunner between pitches. First and third base coaches are not to approach baserunners or umpires and should not socialize with opponents. Players must wear masks while in restricted areas, except while on the field or engaging in other strenuous activities, and lockers must have at least 6 feet between them.’ And get this — ‘Managers and coaches must wear masks while in the dugouts. The next day’s starting pitcher can’t sit in the dugout. The entire traveling party — including players — must wear personal protective equipment while on buses and flights. Restaurants are off limits on the road, including the ones in hotels, as are hotel fitness centers.’ Folks, I am not making this up and it is not part of some sarcastic backlash. These, along with many other items, are what it may take to get MLB baseball back on the field in 2020. I will miss the Crosscutters and I will miss MLB, but if this is what it is coming too, I’m not sure it is worth it. Despite all these issues, be safe out there.

Most often she would just reply, “I know, but there is nothing I can do about that.” As the sports world struggles with what can be done to restore some semblance of play my hopes were lifted when MLB submitted a proposal to the Players Union that, if agreed upon, could see some sort of a baseball season resuming after the Fourth of July. Three months of baseball is better than no baseball at all, I reasoned. After details of that proposal were made public I’m not sure, even as big of a baseball fan as I am, that I would want to see the game I love played in such a watered down fashion. No question — whatever is done must be accomplished in as safe a manner as possible for all concerned. ‘No fans in the stands’ is understood and that indeed will be strange. But some of the other protocols devised by MLB’s four-man committee are hard to fathom. Space does not permit an entire rendering of MLB’s 67-page document under consideration but here are but a few. ‘Showers at ballparks would be discontinued with players possibly arriving in uniforms, (like they did when they played high school baseball). Team personnel will be banned from eating at restaurants on road trips. Team mascots (Phillie Phantic, etc.) will be banned from the field. The traditional exchange of lineup cards would be eliminated, along with high-fives, fist bumps and bat boys and girls. Spitting would be prohibited, along with water jugs

M

y apologies for missing last week’s edition. Thanks to everyone who reminded me. I am finally back to work after a six-week hiatus. We are totally slammed, and I guess it’s a good problem to have. Personally. I liked it better when I was a stay at home dad. My wallet was flush and had lots of time to scribe. Getting back to normal folks. Several have commented on my recent article. The “I Finally Learned How to Fly Fish” column has since gone viral. Many of you reached out and gave me

some love. They shared their stories, and I have even made a few new friends. I continue to throw bugs every single chance I get. The spinning rods are now in the shed. I am still a novice but learn something new each time out. Some nights are definitely better than others, but my new challenge has been very rewarding. I am experiencing some successes and slowly crossing off each species. Hoping to land some Susquehanna Smallies on giant articulated streamers this weekend.

Michelle and Jensen are wrapping up the school year. Yes. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused some major educational snags. Online learning just isn’t for them. I pray that our teachers and kids will head back in Jamie the fall. If not. Perhaps Spencer our local administrators can come up with some better plans. I haven’t had the urge to golf. I take that back. I have a few rounds in at MARYDALE MANOR. You should check out our page on FACEBOOK. Our friendly neighbor has five holes set up in Cogan Station. They range in yardage. This facility is professionally managed by Jensen Spencer Golf. My neighbor mows the grass, and I pay for everything. My son sits back and collects the money. We were a little disappointed with our opening day numbers, but Jensen scored $25 worth of VBUCKS. His contract is up for review this autumn. The Sporting World remains at a complete standstill. The only highlight was the ten-part documentary on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls. “The Last Dance” was just splendid. I thoroughly enjoyed reliving my youth

and learning more about the greatest team of all time. In the fall of 97, Michael Jordan allowed a film crew to follow him around. They were hoping to win their sixth NBA title in eight seasons. It resulted in a stunning portrait of the world’s most dynamic personalities. “The Last Dance” follows the Bull’s iconic season from start to finish. The 10-part exclusive docuseries follows some of Jordan’s final chapters of his outstanding career. The series takes its name from a phrase coined by then Bull’s Coach Phil Jackson. Everyone knew that it would likely be the last ride for the core members of the 1990’s Bulls Dynasty. Jensen and I watched every episode. I already knew, but he quickly figures out that Michael Jordan was the GOAT. Stay safe. Cheers.
