A Presidential Congratulations On Your Graduation

W

ith all that the Class of 2020 has endured during what was supposed to be that special senior year, they deserve a presidential quality commencement speech. What local high school graduations are going to look like this year is still swirling in the wind at press time. So, I looked to the Oval Office of our Great Nation to provide those special words of direction and encouragement as the class of 2020 steps into whatever the future will hold. Our 2nd President, John Adams, will give the opening remarks. “You will ever remember that all the end of study is to make you a good man and a useful citizen.” “To be good and to do good is all we have to do.” President Adams will now step down from the podium and will be followed by President George Washington, and then all presidents in attendance today are in historical order. “Associate yourself with men of good quality if you esteem your own reputation for better to be alone than to be in bad company.” ~George Washington “Nothing can stop the man with the right mental attitude from achieving his good. Nothing on Earth can help the

man with the wrong mental attitude.” ~Thomas Jefferson “Circulation of confidence is better than the circulation of money.” ~James Madison “We must support our rights, or lose our character, and along with it our liberty.” ~James Monroe “Always vote for principle, although you may vote alone.” Our 5th president ~John Quincy Adams. “Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes in, but it takes a slightly better man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error.” ~Andrew Jackson “Labor disgraces no man, unfortunately, you will occasionally find men who disgrace labor.” ~Ulysses S. Grant “There is nothing stable but Heaven and the Constitution.” ~James Buchanan “No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar.” “Most folks are as happy as they make their minds up to be.” ~Abraham Lincoln Moving ahead to the 32nd president of the United States, Harry S. Truman, “The reward of suffering is experience for the future.” “It’s amazing what you can accomplish if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

“I think we consider too much the good luck of the early bird and not enough the bad luck of the early worm.” ~FDR “Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because they want to do it.” ~Dwight Jim D. Eisenhower “Conformity is the Webb, Jr. jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” ~JFK “Yesterday is not ours to recover, but it is ours to win or lose.” ~Lyndon B. Johnson “Those that hate you don’t win unless you hate them, and then you destroy yourself.” ~Richard Nixon “A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.” ~Gerald Ford “We should live our lives as though Christ were coming this afternoon.” ~Jimmy Carter “Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction. We didn’t pass it on in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and be handed on for them to do the same.” ~Ronald Reagan “There is nothing more fulfilling than to serve your country and your fellow citizens and do it well.” 41st president. ~George H.W. Bush “We all do better when we work

together. Our differences do matter, but our common humanity matters more.” ~William Jefferson Clinton “We did not come to fear the future, we came to shape it.” ~Barack Obama “I try to learn from the past, but I plan for the future by focusing exclusively on the present. That’s where the fun is.” ~Donald Trump To wrap things up in our most historic commencement message to the class of 2020, again our 16th President Abraham Lincoln, “And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years.” Being the President of the United States of America is, and always has been, the most difficult job in the world. Much can be learned from these men. Their words of wisdom, advice, and preservation of freedom are timeless. Several did a great job as leader of our great Nation, some average, a few not so much. All have provided the winding road of liberty that you are blessed with as a graduate of the Class of 2020. Tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side to all in the Class of 2020. At this most unique time in American history, please go out and make a difference for the good. If possible, please reside and use your talents right here at home in the West Branch Valley. Help preserve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness in our little corner of the world. God Bless America.

H

igh school graduation has always been an anticipated and nostalgically regarded rite of passage for students and their families, but this year this has been turned on its head because of the restrictions produced by the COVID-19 health crisis. We at Webb Weekly have contacted the high schools in the area to find out how each is handling this. Muncy High School Principal Timothy Welliver said that Muncy is dealing with it this way. Graduation will be on an individual basis on the front lawn of Muncy High School in 15-minute intervals, except the top five graduates who will be on 30-minute intervals so they can complete their speeches. The order of graduation will be the top five and then in alphabetical order. Dates and times of commencement are June 5th from noon to 5 p.m., June 8th, from noon to 5 p.m., and June 9th from noon to 5 p.m. “Graduates will be limited to 15 guests, so we remain under the number of 25 total for the three days of ceremonies. No tickets will be required because there will only be 15 chairs set up for guests. June 10th will be a rain date if the weather forces us to cancel a day of commencement.

We chose to keep our graduation on the front lawn due to tradition knowing that the weather could force us to change, but we felt the Class of 2020 deserves to graduate on our front lawn after all they have been through. “We are still tentatively planning an in-person whole class graduation ceremony on August 7th at 6 p.m.,” Welliver told Webb Weekly. “We would need public gatherings allowed to be 250 people on August 7th and for Lycoming County to be in the green phase. Since we are not certain of the likelihood of when this may happen, we chose to do the individual/family style commencement to ensure we have the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of all our seniors.” According to Montgomery Area High School Principal, Joseph Stoudt, this will be Montgomery’s approach. “On Friday, June 5th, 2020, I am asking that all seniors report to the MACC by 5:45 p.m. in their cap and gown, where you will remain in your vehicles (only one vehicle will be permitted per family — who’s in the vehicle is up to you). Promptly at 6 p.m., we will be announcing graduates individually and allowing them to walk across the stage to receive their diploma cover. Diploma certificates will be mailed home to all seniors meeting

Students have been pre-recorded individually receiving their diplomas so families will be able to watch their child receive their diploma. Also included in the production will be a video created by seniors and our student council featuring student-designed graduation caps. The evening will also feature a few video surprises. The district has been working with a production company to produce the video. Students will be able to watch the presentation on a large LCD screen in a “drive-in” atmosphere, and anyone not in attendance will be able to watch online. The link to watch the production will be posted on the district webpage closer to June 4th. Entrance to the event is by ticket only. In order to ensure that all can see the screen, vehicles will be limited to the size of an SUV or smaller. Vehicles will be allowed to enter the fairgrounds beginning at 6:30 p.m. through the 3rd Street entrance. As of press time, Montoursville school officials have not determined how their graduation will proceed. This may be because they are still hoping that Lycoming County will be placed in the “Green Phase” of Governor Wolf ’s lockdown protocol. If this county is in the “Green” that opens up more possibilities for the graduation ceremonies.

the graduation requirements along with scholarship/award checks on June 5th. I have arranged for GoPhoto to be there that evening, and the event will be live-streamed on the district website. Senior families will be provided with digital copies of the photographs at no charge. For health and safety reasons, I am asking that only the senior exit the vehicle when his/her name is announced. When all students have been announced, we will be processing from the MACC by way of the high school and ending at the Pike DriveIn Theatre. Once at the drive-in, at approximately 9:00 p.m., we will be showing the senior video (this will last approximately 1 hour). Restroom facilities will be open, and families are strongly encouraged to practice social distancing during the showing of the video. A program for the celebration will be available on the district website on the day of the event. The video will also be uploaded to our YouTube channel after the initial screening.” Hughesville High School will be honoring the graduates of the “Class of 2020” on June 3rd at the Hughesville Fair Grounds at 7 p.m. The evening will feature a video production that will include all of the traditional graduation speeches, such as Class Valedictorian, Salutatorian, and Class President. The traditional yearbook dedication will also be a part of the evening’s festivities.

GRADUATIONS In the Warrior Run School District, according to High School Principal Mark Walter, Warrior Run will be holding their graduation ceremony on Friday, June 5th, at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will be held outdoors with rain dates of June 6th at 6:30 p.m. and June 7th at 2 p.m. The ceremony will start in the back parking lot with students in their vehicles with family members. Speeches will be held in the back parking lot and broadcast through a designated Facebook Live page. From there, students and family members, in their vehicles, will drive down to the football stadium. Students will receive their diplomas through a “drive thru” graduation ceremony. Student names will be announced over the stadium’s public address. This portion of the ceremony will also be broadcast via Facebook Live. Milton High School Principal, Andrew Rantz described what Milton will be doing. “The June 4th ceremony will be a combination of a pre-recorded graduation ceremony that includes speeches and a slideshow of all graduating seniors. “We will then hold a Drive-Thru graduation titled “Ride Into Your Future”, where each senior will come to

the High School Football stadium, drive into the stadium and onto the track, and take a lap around while having their name/information announced over the loudspeaker. We will end the event with a fireworks display.” Jersey Shore Area School District - According to a letter sent to each graduate, in accordance with the statewide COVID-19 school shutdown, graduation ceremonies for the 2019-2020 school year must follow guidelines set forth by the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the Department of Health. “Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 school closures, we are not able to proceed with graduation ceremonies as they have occurred in the past. However, the 2019-20 Graduation Plan provides an opportunity for our students to realize prestige and recognition by walking across the stage in honor of their achievement as a high school student and graduate of Jersey Shore.” The Jersey Shore Area School District Senior High School graduation ceremony will take place on June 6th, beginning at 9 a.m. with social distancing rules in place. A drive-up ceremony with staggered times will take place with riders in vehicles being limited to graduates and immediate family mem-

Children and Grief

After the loss of a loved one acknowledging children’s grief is always important. When talking to children about death, one conversation often times is not enough for them to process the loss. Children are able to understand death when given information in clear, age appropriate language. Encourage kids to ask questions, include them as much as they are comfortable with and in service related activities. Talk with the funeral directors in advance so you are aware and then be sure to inform the kids about what to expect and what they will see. Losing a loved one is never easy, and it is especially difficult when young ones are involved. Whether it be a listening ear, some funeral advice or to answer questions, we are here when you or your children need us.

GRADUATIONS bers. Graduates must stay in their vehicles until the graduate enters the staging area, where the parent or guardian will stop at the designated area near the stage. The graduate will then approach the stage where their name will be announced and where there will be an opportunity to take pictures. The event will be both live-streamed and recorded. South Williamsport -South Williamsport will be holding a ‘Virtual Graduation’. Students will arrive at the school at staggered times on June 2nd and 3rd and be allowed 10 guests each. To maintain social distancing, they are inviting parents to hand their child their diploma on the stage. Administration will read the student’s name and have the diploma ready to receive. They are open to the possibility of a formal graduation later this summer if restrictions allow. Williamsport Area School District - Williamsport Area School District plans to graduate over 320 seniors this year by having a “drive-through” graduation ceremony on June 4th beginning at 6 p.m. Students will arrive at the time indicated on their colored cards. Only one vehicle will be allowed per graduating student. In addition, the student must be seated in the front passenger seat, dressed in their cap and gown.

LYCOMING COUNTY RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

Vehicles with graduates will enter the front hill to the high school where programs will be distributed. Families are encouraged to decorate their vehicles to honor their graduate. Upon entering the school bus loop, the graduate will exit the vehicle when directed and will proceed to a social distance marker to wait. When it is their turn, the graduate will hand their name card to an attendee and will proceed up the ramp to have their name announced and receive their diploma. The event will also be live streamed. Loyalsock Township Senior High School- According to Dr. Matt Reitz, Principal of Loyalsock Township High School, Loyalsock will hold a graduation ceremony that is part live and part pre-recorded. “We are using a hybrid of a live and pre-recorded ceremony using the assistance and technology of Rock the House Entertainment out of Cleveland, OH. They specialize in large outdoor and indoor gatherings, including large conferences, outdoor festivals, college and high school graduations.” Graduation will be held Friday, June 5 at 7:00 p.m. Cars can begin coming into the large parking lot adjacent to the Middle School where they will see an elevated stage as well as a 24 ft. video board.

We will award diplomas live, calling each student’s name to leave his/her vehicle and come to the front, onto the stage to receive the diploma. Each will then walk back to their vehicle. Graduation took place on May 28th at 7 p.m. at St. Boniface Church and was also live-streamed on Facebook. The graduating class was able to follow guidelines which stipulated no groups over 25 should gather.

Central Mountain high School - Unlike many of the schools in the region, Central Mountain made the decision to hold a completely virtual graduation ceremony for its graduates. Graduation will be aired on June 2nd at 7pm. Some of the graduates, such as the valedictorian and salutatorian, will be brought into the school to be recorded prior to the live-stream. The school plans on airing graduation in a slide-show format with portraits of the students in their caps and gowns. Once the live-stream event is complete, it will stay on the internet and can viewed anytime if someone was unable to watch it live. A link will be posted on the school’s website.

Each family will receive a ticket for one car to enter and park. Families who are split (separated) will receive two parking pass tickets if they request it. Vehicles must fit into a parking space. Prior to the ceremony beginning, Rock the House will stream music through an FM radio station into each car, as the entire event will be streamed live on their website, the LTSD website, and a few social media platforms. Several videos which were created at the high school will also be streamed prior to the ceremony. These will include student life pictures and each senior’s future plans. Former Local Woman Who Works In Television and Film Industry Describes How COVID-19 Shutdown Is Affecting Her and Others By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

I

n March, Webb Weekly brought you the story of one former local woman, Trina Siopy, who works in the television and film industry and is currently the co-producer of the critically and popularly regarded cable series “Better Call Saul.” We thought it might be interesting to find out from Trina how the COVID-19 situation was affecting her and her colleagues. Trina sent us a dispatch about what things are like for her now, and what follows is her account of that. “I will just start at the beginning. “One day away from starting a new production that I was really excited about. I had a feeling it was coming, and it did. The call came from the show that we were shut-

ting down. They told us it would be for two weeks, and then they would reassess. Two weeks later, the call came that we were staying down and would keep reevaluating every two weeks. They stopped calling after that.” She continued, “Here we are three months later and no sign of starting up anytime soon. I am one of the lucky ones to be able to file for unemployment and have my husband, who can also claim. That makes us able to keep the bills paid. I know others are not so fortunate. Because I was not working yet, I was also already in the system, which also made it very easy. Some of my fellow film workers were working when they got shut down and had a really hard time filing with the thousands of others in New Mexico. “How long will this last? I’m not

It is unfortunate that this happened, but I’ll make the best of it. Time with my husband, who also works in film and usually on a different show, which means different schedules and rare times to even eat dinner together. sure. We work in a tricky business to practice social distancing. With the actors, crew, and background, we are sharing space everywhere and for many hours. I know the studios are in the works with what needs to happen for us to go back to shooting. I’m very interested to see how it pans out and if it will be different indefinitely. “Personally, how am I taking this? Of course, I want to get back to work, back to what I love to do. had a dream last night that... And there’s how many stories, advertisements, and speeches start. You dreamed you could fly, that you went back to school, that you were naked and nobody noticed. Some say that dreams have messages for us, interpretations to heed, or lessons to be learned. In the new book “The Sisters Grimm” by Menna van Praag, there’s less than a month to do so. There was nothing Goldie wouldn’t do for Teddy. She lied for her little brother, stole for him, and she worked a job as a hotel chambermaid for a boss with roaming hands, just so Teddy had everything. Still, her dreams were her own and they were taking her

of the fact that he was a soldier and her father was a demon. How could he tell Goldie that he was created to kill her? If you think it might take some getting used-to, to get into “The Sisters Grimm,” you’re right. It’s not a linear novel. It’s not even entirely set in one world, but the transition between isn’t hard, the story is both light and dark, and some of the characters are deliciously despicable. For a fantasy novel, that’s fun, and frightening made better as author Menna van Praag tells the tale from several viewpoints, including “you,” to put readers inside. Add a bit of the Shakespearean, some persistently bad-news tarot cards, a thundering dose of fable, and if you’ve ever shivered from a deep reading of Grimm’s Fairy Tales, well, just wait... With its tone of edgy evil, you’d be wrong in calling this a “nice” novel because it’s not. Still, for the reader who relishes fantasy-battle tales or otherworldly feminist epics, “The Sisters Grimm” is a dream book.

disdained. He didn’t matter; Mamá had made that clear, when she told soon-to-be-eighteen Bea about her past and her future in a world called Everwhere. For Liyana, next fall held such promise: art school; an apartment with her lover, Kumiko; and swimming, if she were lucky. And then Liyana’s auntie brought a storm to their household, and there was only one way to fix what Nyasha had done: almost-eighteenyear-old Liyana would have to marry a man she didn’t love. As they sometimes do, snips of memory entered seventeenyear-old Scarlet’s mind while she made cinnamon buns in her grandmother’s small cafe, and the images disturbed her. She had no sisters, so why did she dream of three girls she didn’t know? As if caring for an elder with Alzheimer’s and a business wasn’t enough, there were these thoughts. When Leo first saw Goldie, he was smitten, though it was forbidden. He fell in love, but it was not allowed. He could never lose sight

HOME COOKIN Target App, and there was a cute set for little girls. I ordered them, then the next day, it gave me an excuse to hop on the bike and ride down to Target to pick them up at the drive-up service. (Have you used that? It’s amazing! Sorry, I am getting off-topic here.) The next morning when we were putting them on, I kept thinking of my gram. When I was Kenzy’s age, my gram used to walk me down to the Family Dollar in Southside and let me pick out a press-on set of nails. When I slept over there, Gram would have me for the weekend, so from Friday to Sunday, I got to wear these fabulous fake nails and felt like I was king tut. I’d tap them on everything, and wave my hands so everyone could see them. My gram didn’t do it to be spiteful towards my mom, she just knew how happy it made me, and that’s what grams do! I took them off before going home. This is something I will never ever forget. Nails are just my thing. I’ll notice your nails before anything else. I love wild colors in the spring and summer and find it a way to express yourself. I know this had nothing to pertain to food, but I love telling you about my special memories I have. Plus, this recipe makes up for it. I can’t even describe these Skillet Pizza Roll-Ups. There are just no words. Skillet Pizza Roll Ups

• 1 can of Pillsbury Pizza Dough • Pizza Sauce (I used homemade sauce) • 2 cups shredded mozzarella • Pepperoni Unroll the dough and place down on a cutting board. Cover with sauce lightly from corner to corner. Then top with cheese the same way. Place pepperoni on last and any other toppings you would like to add. Roll up as tight as you can get it, jelly roll style. Cut 1-inch pieces and place in a GREASED skillet. (If you don’t have a skillet just use a casserole dish.) Bake for 20 minutes at 400 degrees. Serve with a side of warm pizza sauce for dipping.

he forced quarantine in Pennsylvania was designed to save lives, but it has taken a very tough toll on two particular groups; school students and small business owners and their employees. Students are young and will undoubtedly rebound one way or another, but many predictions point toward many small business owners going belly up, causing unemployment and fewer services to the community. It is not hard to imagine why. The dream of being “your own boss” is infinitely more difficult than the average person could ever imagine. There is usually an enormous upfront cost in investment, and once operations begin, it is critical to offer a quality product or service at a reasonable cost. The next challenge is to build a customer base as soon as possible to turn a profit to pay back investors. An enterprise must have a great product and service, a strong customer base, and secure financial resources to draw upon to survive. This is why nationally, twenty percent of all small businesses fail in their

first year, and over half within five years. So, what happens when an emergency quarantine is thrown in the mix? To look at an example of the trials and tribulations that small businesses now face, I took a look at my favorite interview location, Backhouse Cafe Coffee and Tea, located at 901 W. Fourth Street in Williamsport, directly across the street from the Taber Museum. Ron and June Wright bought a beautiful 19th-century Victorian mansion in October of 2016, which became their home. Then they poured themselves into converting the downstairs into a gorgeous coffee shop and cafe, which they were able to open in August of 2018. With stylish private rooms, a quiet and relaxing atmosphere, excellent specialty teas and coffees, and delicious locally-baked pastries, they soon became a popular destination for locals and tourists. With a 20 percent growth rate, they were well on their way to establishing themselves as a successful business. But then came the COVID quarantine, and Ron and June were hit hard. When

Are You

Retirement Ready? Planning for retirement can be a full time job. I know, I do it daily for clients, examining all the options: tax and income planning, retirement and estate planning. I have 39 years experience working with Federal (FERS) & (CSRS) state (PSERS) & (SERS) and public employees to make the most of their retirement income.

LION

customers would sit in the cafe, they gave them real ceramic cups, but now they had to increase their paper product usage (which increased expenses) since they were only allowed take-out. With Penn College shutdown and the rest of the downtown like a ghost town, they lost their foot traffic. Also, they had been a popular spot for events such as bridal showers, but these also had to go by the wayside. All of this led to a severe decrease in business, which forced them to let go of their three part-time employees. And if all this was not bad enough, many of their regulars assumed they were not open, which also impacted their sales. Since the “Yellow” flag has gone up, Ron and June have seen a pickup in business, with a particularly good day coming on their recent wedding anniversary. It popped up on Facebook, and suddenly Backhouse Cafe had a four-fold increase in business that day! They are still recovering but have faith that they will successfully rebound. In fact, faith is what has kept them going since they first started their business. They had originally wanted to locate in the heart of downtown, but circumstances did not work out, which led to buying the mansion and using that to double as their cafe. They saw God’s hand in this as they realize now that if

they had to pay rent, they would not still be in business. Further, when the loan programs came out, June especially felt that they should not apply but rather trust the Lord to see them through. This small establishment has a good business model with excellent product and service and has streamlined to the bare bone to make ends meet. The future will depend on customers coming back, and in this sense, Backhouse Cafe has a great head start. June has noted that their customer support has been overwhelming, and she attributes much of this to the attitude they take toward those who walk through their doors, treating people more like guests than customers. Ron echoes this attitude with his favorite passage from the Bible, Philippians 2:3, “Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” When he is serving customers, he asks himself, “What can I do to make this person’s day better?” Many small businesses will probably not come out of the COVID Crisis at all; some will come out bruised and battered, but still alive. No one can predict with absolute certainty, but for my coffee, my money is on the future of places like Backhouse Cafe.

How to Reduce Your Risk for Another Heart Attack

A

Take your medications as prescribed. Certain medicines can lower your risk of another cardiac event. That’s why it’s important to understand your medications and take them correctly. Taking aspirin as recommended by a doctor is one way to help prevent another attack. No one should start, stop or modify an aspirin regimen without first speaking with their doctor. Aspirin is not appropriate for everyone, so be sure to talk to your doctor before you begin an aspirin regimen. Manage your risk factors. After a heart attack, it’s important to manage risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes by taking medications as prescribed, quitting smoking, eating healthier and getting active. Attend your follow-up appointments. Attending your follow-up appointments helps your doctors keep track of your condition and recovery. You can

fter a heart attack, as many as 1 in 4 survivors will have another one. Lifestyle changes and working closely with your doctor to manage your health can help minimize the risk of a repeat event. “A heart attack is a life-changing event,” said Nieca Goldberg, MD, American Heart Association volunteer and medical director of NYU Women’s Heart Program. “What many people don’t realize is the hidden risks that led to your first heart attack can be managed and, by doing this, you may reduce your risk of having another one.” Because up to 80% of heart attacks are preventable, it’s important to follow your doctor’s recommendations for reducing your risk. Talk to your doctor about a secondary prevention plan, and consider other steps like these from the American Heart Association’s secondary prevention program, nationally sponsored by Bayer:

make the most of your time with your doctor by preparing a list of questions and concerns along with a list of all medications, vitamins and supplements. Bringing a trusted friend or family member may help as well. Participate in a cardiac rehabilitation program. Cardiac rehabilitation is a medically supervised program designed to help you recover after a heart attack. You should have received a referral to cardiac rehab when you were discharged from the hospital; if you didn’t, ask your doctor if this program is right for you. Get support. It’s normal to feel scared, overwhelmed or confused after a heart attack. Getting support from loved ones or people who have also experienced a heart attack can help you cope. Connect with other heart attack survivors and caregivers through local support groups or the American Heart Association’s free online Support Network. Learn more about ways you can thrive after a heart attack at heart.org/ oneisenough. Take Charge of Your Heart Health Heart disease is the No. 1 cause of death in the United States, but your lifestyle can be your best defense. Stop smoking. If you smoke, quit. If someone in your household smokes, encourage him or her to quit. It may not be easy, but it’s even harder to live with chronic heart disease or recover from a

heart attack. Choose good nutrition. A healthy diet is one of the best weapons for fighting cardiovascular disease. Research shows eating 4-5 servings of fruits and vegetables each day may lower blood pressure over time. Lower cholesterol. Fat lodged in your arteries can trigger a heart attack or stroke. Reduce your intake of saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol, and get moving. If diet and physical activity alone don’t get those numbers down, then medication may be the key. Lower blood pressure. Shake that salt habit, take your medications as recommended by your doctor and get moving. An optimal blood pressure reading is less than 120/80 mmHg (millimeters of mercury). Be physically active. Research has shown that at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity can help lower blood pressure and cholesterol and keep your weight at a healthy level. Reduce stress. Some studies have noted a relationship between coronary heart disease risk and stress. This may affect the risk factors for heart disease and stroke. For example, people under stress may overeat, start smoking or smoke more than they otherwise would. (Family Features & the American Heart Association)

It’s a good time to pull in additional resources so you have extra help waiting if someone you’re counting on falls ill or can’t fill in as planned. A meal delivery service may be a good option if grocery shopping and meal preparation continue to be affected. Reduce exposure. Those who take care of loved ones in their homes or are regular care providers to family members and friends have concerns about exposing this vulnerable group to the virus. Many longterm care facilities have changed their visitation policies. You might be able to visit a loved one through a window, via a balcony or through video chat. It’s also important to minimize time spent out in the community where you could unknowingly contract the virus and pass it to a vulnerable loved one. Shop smart. Because supermarkets and stores with goods identified as “essential” are still bustling with people, it’s important to minimize extra trips and wear a mask when in public. If possible, drop groceries and essentials at the door or arrange for delivery. In addition, some major pharmacies, where AARP members get special benefits on health, wellness and beauty purchases, have introduced special

hether your role as a caregiver has you looking out for an elderly relative, children or both, chances are good that you’ve worried about how the COVID-19 pandemic may continue to affect your ability to provide necessary care. Following the most up to date guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is the first step for caregivers who are looking after loved ones. As caregivers continue to adjust during the pandemic, keep these considerations in mind: Contact health care providers to obtain extra necessary medications and stock up on over-the-counter drugs. Monitor needed medical supplies related to a loved one’s condition or treatments (oxygen, incontinence, dialysis, wound care, etc.) and common supplies such as tissues and cough syrup. Those with a loved one in a long-term care facility should inquire about any positive COVID-19 cases in the facility, testing procedures for the residents and staff members and be aware of the facility’s protocol if there is an outbreak or positive tests among residents and staff. These additional tips can help caregivers reduce the pandemic’s impact: Make backup plans. Most caregivers have plans in place for temporary assistance

Not only are doctor’s offices short on resources, a waiting room can be filled with germs that may cause illness. Try to arrange for telephone or video-based appointments when possible and cancel any appointments that aren’t urgently necessary. Keep germs away. Thorough handwashing with soap and water is critical. In addition to washing hands after eating and using the restroom, anyone entering and leaving the house should wash his or her hands.

depending on the cause, according to AAV. • Subcapsular cataract: A subcapsular cataract occurs at the back of the lens. People with diabetes or those who take high doses of steroid medications have a greater risk of developing this type of cataract. • Nuclear cataract: This cataract forms in the central zone of the lens and is often associated with aging. • Cortical cataract: This cataract is characterized by opacities that are white and wedge-like, which form on the periphery of the lens. Eventually they work to the center in a spoke-like fashion. Cortical cataracts can result from aging. Symptoms of cataracts often can be slow to form, so people may not even notice they have cataracts until they start to block light, while others may learn of their presence during vision exams. Cataracts may cause vision that is filmy, blurry or foggy, indicates WebMD. In older adults, nearsightedness may be attributed to cataracts. Glare, both during the day and at night, also may affect vision due to cataracts. Double vision or changes in the way one sees color can be symptoms of cataracts as well. Eye professionals can diagnose cataracts and make recommendations on the course of treatment. Cataract removal surgery is highly effective. More than 95 percent of people who have undergone the surgery experience improvements. Such surgeries are often performed on an outpatient basis.

hen a brand new car is driven off a dealership lot, its plastic headlight lenses are clear and pristine. Over time, due to contaminants in the environment and oxidation from ultraviolet rays, those same lenses can become cloudy, yellow and opaque. Cloudy headlights can decrease visibility and potentially put drivers at risk. Similar scenarios sometimes unfold involving the human eye. Starting around age 40, proteins in the eye may begin to break down and cause lenses to become cloudy. UV rays can be damaging to the eyes and contribute to this natural protein degradation. While pronounced vision problems may not occur immediately, the American Academy of Ophthalmology says vision can be impaired later in life. The organization All About Vision states cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over age 40 and also are the principal cause of blindness in the world. Unprotected exposure to the sun is just one contributor to cataracts. Certain medical problems, such as diabetes, also can cause cataracts. An eye injury, eye surgery or radiation treatments on the upper body also can cause cataracts, as can corticosteroids, advises the AAO. Congenital cataracts, which occur when infants are born with cataracts, may be caused by infection, injury or poor development in the womb; otherwise, they can form in childhood. he County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, May 26th, was what could be described as a typical exceptional meeting. Typical in that there were the usual rudimentary action items along with a few events that are the type that finds their way into the local news media outlets. There was one item that was not rudimentary and probably will not be featured in the local news, but it should be. That would be the retirement of the Lycoming County Director of Information Services (IS), Karl Demi. It is difficult to appreciate how critical information technology is to our local government. Commissioner Scott Metzger stated it is the Central Nervous System of the county. Information Services deals with networking, programming, cybersecurity, telecommunications, record management, printing and publication, audio-visual information, voter registration, and mail distribution. There is not a single aspect of the county operations,

from the courts to the prison, voting services, even resource management that are not networked into the information services department. It is widely recognized as an exemplary system for the size of our county, and much of the credit can be attributed to Karl Demi. Karl Demi does not look like a computer geek, but he has been one his entire life. Born in 1962, his favorite television program was Star Trek, and he wanted to be one of those guys who worked the computers. He joined the United States Navy right out of high school and became a data systems technician for them for the next six years. After the Navy, he worked as a computer technician

straighten out the mess. It was so bad that he seriously considered walking after two weeks. He never walked away from a challenge before, so he rolled up his sleeves and went to work — and what a job he did. In fact, he did his logistics job so well, when the position of director for the department came up in 2014, Karl was the obvious choice. At his retirement presentation on May 26th, the praises from his peers, colleagues, and bosses were so overwhelming, when he was asked to make some comments, Karl went to the podium and remarked, “Well, based on what I have been hearing

today, I am retiring to be able to give lessons on how to walk on water, with just four easy payments of $19.95.” That was so Karl. I watched many times when he came to the county commissioners’ meetings and had to explain extremely complex questions relating to information technology and somehow make it not just comprehensible but even interesting to listen to. Periodically he had the painful task of having to approach the commissioners to seek expenditures that ran into hundreds of thousands of dollars for upgrades in equipment and licensing fees. He would take the

beating that was not his fault (blame Microsoft!), but through it all, he kept his cool and his smile. The film director John Frankenheimer once said that talent is doing easily what others find difficult, and genius is doing easily what talent finds difficult. Karl Demi is another degree after genius. He found solutions to some of the most complex problems that the county faced and never whined about the difficulties or boasted when they were completed. He is one of a kind, and Lycoming County was very fortunate to have him. Happy retirement, Karl.

in various positions until he finally landed a position as Network Manager for the Lycoming County government in March of 2000. It is almost impossible to imagine how primitive information services were at that time. One person described it as an IT nightmare. The servers were in storage closets, and it was not unusual for the janitors to knock out a server when they were getting out their supplies. All the departments had their own systems, and there was no way they could share information from one department to another. Karl was hired as a network manager to try to

Living Well…

Three Keys to Fitness Progress

O

ne of the good things to come out of the recent crisis has been having a little more time to refocus on my personal fitness routine. Though I am blessed to have a well-outfitted home gym, I understand that many people need to make do with little or no fitness equipment. While this may seem like an insurmountable obstacle, blocking you from making progress, this is actually not true. Achieving your fitness goals depends

on several keys, and as long as you adhere to some simple advice, you will most certainly make great progress. Define your goals. Common sense tells us that when taking a trip, we need to know where we are going. When developing a fitness plan, think about what you want to achieve before you actually start. Be specific. Just saying you want to get into shape is not enough. Do you want to lose weight, lower your blood sugar levels,

develop stamina, get stronger — what exactly are you interested in achieving? Once you have thought about it and decided what your goals are, write them down. It helps to have something you can Dave look back on and, occaBellomo sionally, revise. Educate yourself. You need to know where you are going and how you plan on getting there to use the trip analogy again. Thus, you will need to educate yourself on how the

human body adapts to stress. And, yes, exercise is a stress. Your body adapts specifically to the stresses you impose upon it. In other words, you get what you train for. If you want to get stronger, lift things that are challenging. If you want to develop endurance, perform an exercise that gets you fatigued over a relatively long period of time. There is certainly more to this, but the bottom line is you need to challenge yourself by doing the things that you want to improve. If exercise is new to you altogether, you will want to ask a fitness professional what exercises are right for you and to

REPAIRING or REPLACING YOUR ROOF?

Q: A:

How do I know if it is a good time to sell? Selling your home can be a big decision and the factors that determine the answer are unique to each seller based on their own personal situations. Meeting with a Realtor can help you delve deeper into the factors that determine if it is a good time for YOU to sell your home.

What is the first step to take to get my home ready to sell? The one thing every seller can do right away that costs little more than elbow grease and makes a world of difference in the perception of your property is to declutter. De-cluttering can make a home feel larger, brighter, and the lack of clutter will help keep your home tidy for all of those showings you are about to get.

How do you decide on the listing price? Pricing a home is the process of gathering specific information about your home and its characteristics and then comparing that data to information about homes that have already sold in your market area.

How long will it take for you to sell my home? Local statistics indicate that the average days on the market is 74 in our local area. The length of time it takes to sell a home varies but it really comes down to making sure that the home is priced correctlyREAL for its location, ESTATE amenities, AGENCY and condition.

son to adapt or become stronger. That being said, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Don’t kill yourself. Take baby steps and make little adjustments over time so your body actually has a chance to adapt. Thousands of years after Milo is said to have crossed a field with a bull on his shoulders, little has changed in the health and fitness industry. Sure, every other second, a chemically enhanced fitness ‘expert’ is touting their latest method for achieving a lean, rock-hard body. Just send them three payments of $39.95, and they will happily send you a bottle of whatever supposedly gave them the look of a comic book superhero. The truth, while not glamorous, is simple. Define your goals, understand what stress is necessary to elicit the change you want, then gradually push yourself to become better. Over time, you will most certainly achieve whatever goals you set your mind to, not with expensive equipment, but with simple training principles and a desire to Live Well. For more information on developing a fitness program or if you are interested in online training, feel free to message me on my Facebook page, Bellomo Online Training.

help get you started. Progressive Overload. The concept of progressive overload has been around for thousands of years. Legend has it that in the 6th Century B.C., Milo of Crotona, a city in what is now Southern Italy, came up with a simple yet ingenious method for achieving strength and physical development. Milo would pick up a calf and carry it on his shoulders across a field. As the calf grew in size, the demands of the already heavy load increased. Milo was able to adapt and grow stronger. This brings us back to stress. Just how hard should you push yourself? Progressive overload simply means doing something that your body is not used to and that challenges you. In order to get better, your body needs to perceive a threshold of stress. Then, as you rest and recover, your body’s natural response is to adapt by becoming stronger, adding muscle, or making some other physiological improvement that is in direct response to the specific stress/exercise you subjected your body to. You need to push yourself to a point where it is exposed to slightly more weight, more repetitions, shorter rest breaks, more exercises, etc., over time. If you don’t push yourself, your body has no rea-

Springtime Alert Do Not Disturb Young Wildlife

W

hether in their backyards or high on a mountain, it’s almost certain Pennsylvanians will encounter young wildlife this time of year. While some young animals might appear to be abandoned, usually they are not. It’s likely their mothers are watching over them from somewhere nearby. So when encountering young wildlife, be it deer, birds, raccoons or other animals, the best thing you can do is leave them alone. “Well-intentioned people might step in to help a young animal that appears to be alone, not realizing its mother is nearby and it’s not in need of help,” said Matthew Schnupp, the Game Commission’s wildlife management director. “That’s one reason why leaving young wildlife undisturbed in the wild typically is the best solution when encountering young wild animals.” Adult animals often leave their young while they forage for food, but they don’t go far and they do return. Wildlife also often relies on a natural defensive tactic called the “hider strategy,” where young animals will remain motionless and “hide” in surrounding cover while adults draw the attention of potential predators or other intruders away from their young.

Deer employ this strategy, and deer fawns sometimes are assumed to be abandoned when, in fact, their mothers are nearby. The Game Commission urges Pennsylvanians to resist the urge to interfere with young wildlife or remove any wild animal from its natural setting. Such contact can be harmful to both people and wildlife. Wild animals can lose their natural fear of humans, making it difficult, even impossible, for them to ever again live normally in the wild. And anytime wildlife is handled, there’s always a risk people could contract diseases or parasites such as fleas, ticks and lice. Wildlife that becomes habituated to humans also can pose a public-safety risk. Some years ago, a yearling, sixpoint buck attacked and severely injured two people. The investigation into the incident revealed that a neighboring family had illegally taken the deer into their home and fed it as a fawn, and they continued to feed the deer right up until the time of the attack. It is illegal to take or possess wildlife from the wild. Under state law, the penalty for such a violation is a fine of up to $1,500 per animal. Under no circumstances will anyone who illegally takes wildlife into captivity be allowed to keep that animal, and under a working agreement with state

health officials, any “high risk” rabies vector species confiscated after human contact must be euthanized and tested; it cannot be returned to the wild because the risk of spreading disease is too high. Animals infected with rabies might not show obvious symptoms, but still might be able to transmit the disease. Though any mammal might carry rabies, the rabies vector species identified in the agreement are: skunks, raccoons, foxes, bats, coyotes and groundhogs. People can get rabies from the saliva of a rabid animal if they are bitten or scratched, or if the saliva gets into the person’s eyes, mouth or a fresh wound. P

ennsylvania’s spring gobbler season wrapped up last Saturday, with mixed reports of success and frustration. Most hunters seemed to have encountered gobblers that did not want to sound off, but instead would come to the call silently, if at all. But spring gobbler hunters are a resilient bunch, and most are already making plans for next year’s hunt. In the meantime, since the winter weather has finally broken and the grass is growing and trees are leafing out, let’s turn our focus to what habitat improvement work we can accomplish to better the feed and cover for the wildlife we want to entice onto and hold on your property. Your Habitat Management Plan should include an inventory of current desirable and undesirable trees, shrubs and vines on your property. Additionally, include a listing of those new trees, shrubs and vines you would

A

like to add – including how and where you want to plant them. ERADICATE THE INVASIVE PLANTS: Over the years, government agencies and well-intended organizations have offered free seedlings of autumn olive, Tartarian honeysuckle, barberry and multiflora rose to be planted for wildlife habitat improvement. Since their introduction, each of these species has spread, sometimes taking over fallow fields and forest openings. Today, each one of these species is listed as a non-native invasive plant that should be eradicated wherever possible. Over the next few weeks, and before grasses and other vegetation push up, these invasive plants are easily spotted wherever they are popping up in fields or along field edges. As we get into the summer months the ground will harden, making it more difficult to mechanically remove some of the larger and more mature plants. Further, once these undesirable plants

The most effective way to clear out the large invasive plants is to cut them off at the base or trunk at ground level and apply a small amount of Roundup or Garlon 4 on the stump. It takes very little of the herbicide to stop any future growth and kill the plant. While I hesitate to recommend chemical treatments, use of these herbicides is effective in killing each of the invasive species we are trying to eliminate. While the majority of these invasive species will be found in field settings or along forest edges, they can also be found and should be eliminated in

woodland settings as well. Finally, there are two undesirable species of plants that we should turn our attention to in the woods that should be a target for elimination – the stripped maple and the New York or hayscented fern. Spraying the ferns with Roundup – particularly in July and August is very effective. For the stripped maple, make a nick in the outer bark of the tree with a hatchet or machete and apply two or three drops of Garlon 4 in the opening. It will kill the tree. Between the stripped maple and the New York or hayscented fern, the fern is the more

important to eliminate as it emits a toxin wherever it grows that restricts other plants from growing, and it has no real food or cover value for wildlife. Elimination of these invasive and encroaching plants is a critical first step in any habitat improvement plan. Once they are eliminated, you can develop food plots, create better field conditions for wildlife and establish valuable plantings of shrubs, trees and vines that will more properly benefit wildlife of all kinds. Next time, we’ll look at some of those improvements that should work for you.

51 • Webb Weekly June 3, 2020

are removed, you can plant new shrubs and trees that will provide much better wildlife cover and feed. If the plants are small enough, mowing them with a brush hog will keep them in check and, over time, begin to eliminate them altogether. If the plants are larger and have developed a larger woody stem, they may be removable with the use of a chain or cable and ATV or tractor to pull them out. If they are really large and otherwise unmanageable, you will probably have to resort to chemicals to eliminate them.

reading I’ve just done, apparently, the Indians placed fish remains in their plantings, so this is nothing new. The fact is fish scraps make a very good natural fertilizer for nitrogen and trace minerals. You may want to place the fish scraps in your compost pile or container for a time or simply bury the scraps below the root system of the plants. Be aware that some animals may want to visit your garden, so you may want to put up some type of fencing. I’ll admit that this is the first time for me too, so I’ll see how it goes, but I’ve read some reports that those who have tried it have had much better plant growth.

fillets (10 panfish) make a good meal for my wife and me. Over the years after filleting, I would put the fish scraps in my garbage can, but in the summer heat, I don’t have to tell you how that eventually smelled, but now my scraps are going into my garden. Recently some friends and I were talking, and one of the guys asked me for my fish scraps for his garden; I saved some for him but then decided to try them in my own garden. I’m just getting ready to do some planting, but I have deposited my fish scraps into a compost container next to my garden along with some manure and old rotting leaves. According to some

So overall, our recruiting process didn’t change that much.” WW: Has the MAC establishing any rules regarding re-opening? Clark: “The re-opening process will be mainly achieved by each individual school. The conference won’t be regulating everything. Institutionally, the challenge to each of us is being respectful of the others and we want the conference to play. But each school is facing different circumstances. In Pennsylvania some of the schools are in the various red, yellow and green stages. The MAC also has schools in New Jersey and Maryland so it is way too early for the conference to make any rules. That said we continue to have virtual meetings with the member schools and we will continue to formulate plans moving forward.”

WW: Around the country several Division One colleges have announced plans to eliminate some sports programs. Will all Lycoming College sports programs be retained? Clark: “Absolutely. I have zero reservations about that. Athletics are a huge part of what we are institutionally. Lycoming College sports are all safe. We have no intentions to eliminate any of our sports.” WW: Regarding football, what is your outlook for the 2020 season? Clark: “Looking back, the way we started last year was not good. Honestly, it was incredibly disappointing. After the first six games there were people who had written us off. We did some soul searching and were able to finish the season on a positive note. The off season was also going really good until the pandemic hit. For 2020 we return

a two-year starter at quarterback, four-fifths of the offensive line, the two leading rushers from the last two seasons and three tight ends that we feel good about on offense. One thing that we did well at the end of last season was run the ball better. Defensively we are also excited. We did lose two all-league defensive linemen in Amhad Curtis and Duane Boone, but we return a lot of guys up front and three guys with experience in the secondary. We did take a big hit at linebacker but Jase Wright, a local kid from Hughesville, we think is going to be a really good player, so we are optimistic and feel good about it. We think we are bringing in a lot of athleticism with this year’s recruiting class. We are excited for the upcoming year and look forward to getting things cranked back up later this summer.”

We did miss the spring practice phase of 2020, but we don’t look at that as a disadvantage because everyone else missed the same time.” WW: Has your recruiting process been affected? Clark: “Fortunately, our recruiting process wasn’t severely affected. We traveled postThanksgiving up until Christmas and then again in January and February. I was actually in high schools in the beginning of March, when our spring break began, when this whole thing started. The day when the NBA pulled the plug I was returning from a recruiting trip in the Philadelphia area. We had the majority of our prospects here on campus between the games last fall and then thru the January/February period.

We are constantly looking for new members. It is only $10 a year. $8 for kids. Right now I’d say we have 600 or so members. Our lowest total in twenty five years.” One of their biggest events and fundraisers was unfortunately cancelled. The annual Children’s Fishing Derby was scratched because of COVID-19. Hundreds of youngsters from all over participate. Jensen and I look forward to this every year. It is an all day fishing competition with tons of wonderful prizes for each youngster. The Anglers and the derby will be back next June. The entire nursery experienced some major flooding last Halloween. Four inches of rain in one hour caused some strife. The freakish storm played havoc with little Slacks Run. Sam and the boys had a serious problem. The farm was washed away and the Anglers lost to 2,000 fish. The organization has been in communication with DEP to make some necessary improvements and changes. Sam estimates it is going to cost the Club another $10,000 just to get the nursery back in shape. Jensen and I both helped load up the trucks early that morning. Each large oxidized container holds approximately 500 trout. We started with the yearlings

first. Then all of the fun began. Jensen and a few other kids were able to transport some bruins by net. He struggled in moving the massive trout. Both trucks headed south. Several cars followed behind. The first stop was Trout Run Park. We got out of the car and grabbed a bucket full of fish. Headed to the water and released 7 healthy fish. The caravan made another ten stops along Lycoming Creek. Jensen got a little bored after three, but it was an absolute ball. We even ventured all the way to Rock Run. I know I am heading back Saturday. Special thanks to Sam, Dale and the rest of the Lycoming Creek Anglers. I am extremely proud to be associated with this great organization. Volunteers are tough to find these days. Please consider on becoming a member or making a donation today. Your funds can definitely make an impact on our local trout fishing. Tight lines. Cheers.
