In almost every case of an accidental shooting, if this rule would have been followed, tragedy would have been prevented. Most accidents occur because the gun is loaded, and the person handling the gun is unaware of this. The worst thing that should ever happen is that a round accidentally fires into the ground or in a safe direction where no one is, and then someone needs a change of underwear. A gun should never be pointed at a person or persons unless being used for personal defense. The first thing a gun owner should do after shooting is empty their weapon and doublecheck the chamber while pointing the gun in a safe direction. The first thing a gun owner should do after removing a gun from a safe, locked place and removing the trigger lock is make sure that by some mistake, there isn’t a round in the chamber. The gun owner is responsible for the safe keeping, transport, and use of the firearm. Simply put, never point a firearm in the direction of anyone, including your fourlegged friends. There is a gentleman locally that knows all about our 2nd Amendment right and how to teach safety and the proper use of a handgun. Mr. Adam Kordes, the owner of National Range & Armory. He has the area’s only indoor shooting range, and it is just like you see on TV. There are eight state-ofthe-art shooting lanes; the target is clipped and sent out to the distance you would like to shoot. We are truly fortunate to have his facility right here in Williamsport.

NATIONAL RANGE & ARMORY

Powered by the 2nd Amendment & Webb Weekly

Adam and his staff offer classes for the beginner to the most advanced marksman. I am telling you about this because of my commitment and belief in the 2nd Amendment. I want everyone who wants to protect themselves, family, and property not to fear the handling of a gun by being educated and confident in the event it is needed. I believe so strongly in this for women 18 years old, and up, that I will pay half of the beginner firearm safety course. Simply call National Range & Armory at 570-6014101 or go to their Facebook page and get registered. They will be forming classes of 10, and they will fill quickly. We will start with the first 50 ladies to register and go from there. If you are 65 or over, you could probably twist my arm, and I would pay the entire $100.00 course fee. So, ladies, find a friend to go along, or even the whole book club or group you travel with. Make it an evening out with dinner and a drink afterward. I guarantee you will enjoy the day. Gentlemen, it’s up to you to watch the kids and hold down the fort. Let’s all be safe out there and look out for one another. God Bless America.

t’s been a long spring. Like, interminably long. The Coronavirus has changed everyone’s lives, and the local restaurant industry is no exception. While most places were either open or closed, restaurants had to learn to grapple with a new way of operating. Places that never offered takeout or delivery had to figure out how to make that work, in order to save their businesses, and most have made it through. But ‘Green Phase’ isn’t the end for them. They now have a whole new set of rules and regulations to learn and follow while keeping their businesses afloat. It goes way beyond customers wearing a mask and keeping six feet apart. As restaurants navigate their way through, many have come up with ‘creative solutions’ to keep business running and customers fed and happy. Along with takeout and delivery, a few offered good old-fashioned car-hop service, amongst other things. There has also been a surge of beverages to-go — slushie season is in full force! In the City of Williamsport, mayor Derek Slaughter is lifting the open container laws that allow people to get a drink and take a walk in the city. Before I get into the details of how these eateries are now expected to function, let’s start by emphasizing the need for patron patience. Things are not going to be the same as they were the last time you went out to eat. There will be fewer seats, more space, and more policies to follow. PLEASE be patient and courteous to your host(esses), waitstaff, managers, etc. They are just trying to do their jobs and navigate new territory and will be learning on the fly.

There will be waittimes and missteps. But if you are patient and understanding, it will make everyone a lot happier. And don’t forget, many of these people have been living without Steph their normal incomes Nordstrom for months, so don’t forget to tip! Also, being forced to operate at 50% capacity, means 50% less opportunity for tips. It also means that the owners themselves have a 50% less chance for income. Most restaurants need to run regularly at 80% capacity to stay in the black. Try to check out restaurants’ websites and Facebook pages before you head out for a meal so you can see their policies and how they are handling things, so you know what to expect before you show up. Brian Haller from the Southside Restaurant said they have added new outside dining to help accommodate extra seating. “We are introducing ‘The Rail’ at The South Side. Eighteen outdoor seats where the view is underwhelming but the food and drinks rock! Open beginning June 5 during normal business hours — weather permitting. Seating at The Rail will be on a firstcome-first-serve basis. Reservations cannot be taken due to the possibility of inclement weather and inside occupancy restrictions of the Governor.” Tara, from Trifecta Bar & Grill in Montoursville, said that their rooftop bar is ready and waiting! They have lots of outdoor seating available and

have been working hard to comply with the Governor’s orders. Janet Jackson from Eat and Run Catering at Water Tower Square said they have their outside dining ready to go too! They also have a beautiful new dining room that will be available, but at the required 50% capacity. The Cellblock is also ready to re-open. They noted that that things will be different there, though. They will have the upper/lower patio, pub, pub landing, and the entire main bar and band room open. Tables will be six feet apart and have a max seating of ten people per table. The dance floors will be closed, and there is no standing or congregating in open areas around the bar. They will also have waitstaff for drink orders as no one not seated at the bar can walk up to the bar to order. Pier 87 Bar & Grill is fortunate to have plenty of outdoor space to help make up for the loss of capacity. “The takeout business has provided us with a steady flow of guests and enabled us to bring back some of our employees, leading up to green. This week we are arranging our tables to be 50% inside and adding tables to the patio for full service. We have been meeting all this week with the staff from each department to go over new restrictions and get them acclimated to the restaurant and our normal procedures once again. It is going to be a great challenge, but we feel that our staff is up for this challenge.” From everything that I have read, the basic rules for restaurants are this: Everyone must operate at 50% capacity. All tables must be six feet apart. No more than ten people with a common relationship can be seated together except at a bar, where there will be a four-person limit. You must wear a mask when entering and exiting, or moving around the premises, i.e.,

going to the restroom, and you can remove your mask while seated. As we all learn to navigate “Green Phase” please keep these tips from PA Licensed Beverage and Tavern Association: “Please remember that this is a new world with new rules for restaurants and taverns. You’re most likely going to a restaurant that recently put together an outdoor seating plan in hopes of generating enough money to hire back staff and keep their business alive. They are trying their best, but everything may not be perfect. “Some may even be setting up in the streets or in parking lots. It’s going to be fun, but it’s also going to be hard on the employees. You’ll

see them wearing masks no matter how hot it gets. And, possibly, you’ll see them walk a long distance to get more water. They are going to be hot and most likely overwhelmed because restaurants are not set up for this, and they’ll be navigating new guidance from the state. “Please help your servers in this journey by doing the following: “1. Don’t over-run your server. Try your best to ask for everything you need at once. Remember, it could be a long walk from the street into the building for more water or anything else. Help them out by asking all at once. “2. No mask jokes or your views on them. The server has to wear it. They have no choice.

he medical profession is the closest thing we have in America to an aristocracy. It is almost rude to refer to a medical doctor by anything but the title, doctor. They are the overseers of our most precious possession — our health — and since every person must utilize these experts more times than they would wish in their lifetime, almost all doctors are very, very busy. So, it is somewhat unusual to get a chance to look behind the scenes and see who they truly are on the inside. Dr. Joseph DeMay, a pediatrician in Loyalsock, has done just that, however. He has recently written a book, Musings of a Christian Physician on the Physical and Spiritual Healing of Man: A Treatise in Daily Devotional Form. Dr. DeMay has a life that is fascinating and would have made a great biography someday, but he

never sat down to write a book in the first place. Instead, in May of last year he found that he had been jotting down thoughts from his study of the Bible that he likened to the biblical prophet Jeremiah who said he had a “burning fire shut in my bones” that he could not hold in. The catalyst was a life-changing experience that happened in December of 2017. After a routine delivery of a perfectly healthy baby boy, Dr. DeMay was leaving the hospital and suddenly had a thought. He told the nurse to get a bilirubin level (testing for jaundice), and also a complete blood count on the newborn. There was no reason to do so, but the tests turned out to be providential. Had the baby gone home, although apparently clinically fine, the infant would have certainly died within twenty-four hours as his kidneys would have been overwhelmed. The baby was found to have the most fulminant and deadly form

him to be as effective in the medical field as he is. One of his favorite quotes is from the seventeenthcentury French mathematician and theologian Blaise Pascal who stated, “Faith indeed tells us what the senses do not; but not the contrary of what they see. Faith is above them, not against them. Apart from Jesus Christ, we do not know what is our life, nor our death, nor God, nor ourselves.” Dr. DeMay wrote his book for the average person, which he hopes will strengthen their faith that healing is in Christ’s atonement. At the same time he also hopes it will strengthen those in the medical field as well. A Christian doctor should make a better doctor. Available in hard cover and paperback, Musings of a Christian Physician on the Physical and Spiritual Healing of Man: A Treatise in Daily Devotional Form has just been released on Amazon by Weston Press, a subsidiary of the Thomas Nelson Publishing Company. It is a long read, some 360 pages, but it provides food for the soul on every page.

of congenital acute lymphoblastic leukemia with a mortality rate from 83 to 100 percent. As it was caught immediately, the child quickly received treatment and although it was touch and go for a time, the little guy did eventually fully recover. Dr. DeMay recognized the “still, small voice” within him that saved the baby’s life was the leading of the Holy Spirit. He has practiced his faith along with practicing his profession as long as he has been a doctor. So it was, when he found his reflections on the Scriptures were becoming more focused, he explored the idea of putting them together into a book. Through some inquiries, he found a Christian publisher that was intrigued and encouraged him to submit his manuscript. Any book that saturates every page with Scripture quotes as much as this one would appear to be coming from a theologian other than a physician who has practiced for the past three decades with some 5000 clients. But from DeMay’s point of view, it is exactly because of his Christian faith that enables

Faith Conversations…

Hope in a Season of Rain

W

ell, it happened again. The last time I took a couple of weeks off from writing, a global pandemic hit. This time I took a couple of weeks off and our country erupted into civil unrest. If those events weren’t so catastrophic, the coincidence could be considered humorous. It’s not. It’s incredibly sad. We are in a catastrophic season. Friends, since the moment Adam and Eve fell from grace, all of mankind has been suffering in a perpetual season of catastrophe. Jesus warned us that we would have trouble in this world — and He was right. The world has fallen far from the beautiful holiness and wholeness of God’s original design. The tragic consequences of that loss bear down heavy on the entire world — and that includes the obedient followers of Jesus Christ. There are a lot of scammers out there trying to convince you that following Jesus will grant you the perfect life you want on this planet. They are lying to get your money or your attention. The sooner you learn that lesson, the better off you will be. In His soaring Sermon on the Mount, Jesus gives us this heads-up, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his

sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Did you catch that? He told us it would rain on the just and the unjust. In other words, the effects of brokenness would be experienced by all of us — ALL OF US — and that includes believers. In the midst of the carnage-filled rain, He calls on His children to LOVE and to PRAY FOR and to GREET EVERYONE — even if they are the very people who are causing the rain! If we want to share in the DNA of our heavenly Father, then we must demonstrate love to everyone — regardless of their race, gender, creed, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status or political affiliation — Jesus wanted us to love even the people who are attacking us. He preached it, and then He demonstrated that love on the cross by pouring His extravagant grace on scoundrels like you and me. Wait, I’m not a scoundrel, and neither are you. Uh oh. That’s the problem. We think we are good. That would explain our arrogance and smugness. We need to read Romans 3 again. If there is any good in you and me, it is attributable only to

God’s redeeming grace. If we think otherwise, then we have elevated ourselves above others — even above God. The lofty perch upon which we sit stands as a repulsive idol before Almighty God. He knows exactly who we are. We’re not fooling Him. From our lofty perch, we Tim have been judging others. Hartzell Do you see the irony from God’s point of view? Here we are, scoundrels saved only by His grace, and yet we believe we have the right to sit in judgement on others — and even on Him! There is only one Judge, and He is not sharing that role with you or me. Instead of judging, God has called on us to love. But you say, “Hartzell! How will people know how wrong they are unless we tell them? Isn’t it our job to make sure they know they are sinful?” Nope. That’s God’s job. And He is the only one qualified to do so because He is the only one who can see inside the human heart. You and I don’t have that power. And since we cannot judge intent, God sets us free to do one incredible, gracefilled and world changing thing: LOVE EACH OTHER IN THE RAIN! The world is convinced that most Christians don’t like them. We are frustrated when we hear that, but there is a reason for it — and it has much to do with our judgmental perches. From our lofty positions, we tend to look down

on everyone else — and that downward glance is obvious to them. How it all must break the heart of God. We laugh at the Israelites because they kept falling into idolatry. Sometimes, we are no different. Our lofty perch is our idol and every time we look down on someone else, we offer worship to the idol of our own arrogance. What a mess — and it is a mess of our own making. But God has good news for all us! If we will climb down from our lofty perches and humbly fall on our faces before Almighty God, He will heal us. Our downward perspective will turn upward and the world will begin to see the change. Listen to His voice: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” My fellow believers, the blame game must stop. The biggest problem this world faces is hardened Christianity. We need to stop blaming everyone else and take responsibility for our own mistakes. Until we Christians soften up and own our arrogance and idolatry, the world has no hope — and neither do we. There is hope, and the seed is planted in our hardened hearts. God wants to break up that hard ground today — and it seems that He is using a season of rain to soften us. I don’t know about you, but I have a lot of praying to do.

he color green symbolizes growth, harmony, freshness, and fertility; all are apt descriptors of the hopes we have as we head into the green phase. And what a better time than summer to emerge from self-isolation, even if we are emerging 6 feet apart from each other. As we begin to return to work and the world, another color that comes to mind is white, which represents light, goodness, heaven, and safety among many other traits. Again, all good things we have hope for in the future. In my book, no summer can be complete without the Little White Dress, a.k.a. the LWD. Whether you continue to stay (mostly) at home or find yourself heading back out into your community, as the temperature starts to rise, get yourself in to the spirit of warm-weather and renewal with an easy and effortless white dress. Below are some options, both casual and whimsical for most budgets. Asos Design’s Curve Skater Dress, currently on sale, comes in plus sizes and features lace inserts and a mini silhouette that pairs breezily with

short sleeves, and tiered design make for a light and breezy frock perfect for a barefoot day at home. Or, pair with a sunhat and crocs for a walk in the park. If you’re in the market for a midilength LWD, check out H&M’s Cotton Poplin Dress with puffed sleeves and a square neckline. Gathered seams below the bust and on the skirt make for a voluminous silhouette, perfect for a lazy afternoon on the hammock with a cool drink and a good book. For a more practical, yet still eye-catching option, they also feature a Cotton Poplin Shirt Dress. This ankle-length dress with a collar, front pleats, and flared skirt brings with it a breath of fresh summer air if you are returning to the office. For a romantic evening on the patio, consider Mango’s Laser-Cut MiniDress. The wrap silhouette, ruffled hem, and eyelet material make for the perfect frock when holding hands with your special someone as you watch the sun set. Looking for something a bit more glamorous? Then consider their Metallic Thread Long Dress with a crossed V-neck, side tie, and

long sleeve. As the name suggests, this LWD has the bonus of silver worked into the fabric, giving off an ethereal 70’s style glam. Pair with snake-effect sandals, or at least plan to pair with some snake-effect strappy sandals when swanky nights on the town are more of a reality than a fantasy. For more sophisticated, but still casual options, look to Garnet Hill’s Linen Fringe-Hem A-Line and Essential Linen Tank Dress. Both of these LWDs also come in additional colors and patterns, but in white are quite stunning. The Tank Dress has a removable belt to cinch and adjust the fit and hits slightly below the knee. For cooler summer evenings, pair with an open-weave cardigan and closed-toed flats. The A-Line features pockets, hidden bra snaps, and a concealed back zip for a support, yet effortless fit. The jewel neckline is the perfect backdrop for your favorite summer pendant. Embrace the green phase with white by stepping out in a linen LWD or elevate your stay-at-home style with billowy poplin dress. Either way, you’ll be summer ready and stylish!

s a mom of two kids and a wife, it’s nice to have easy quick nights on these summer days. I mean I love to be in my kitchen, but you know what I also love? Being outside. On these beautiful 70-degree days that we have been getting, I have been having a hard time Andrea coming inside! I’ve had quite a McElroy bit of people say to me the past few weeks about how tan I am. As soon as school was done with my kids

we would head right outside after being on computers for hours in he mornings. I always find something to get into. Even if it’s just swinging on our wooden swing outback watching my kids ride, but typically I don’t sit much. I look for something to do and get my tan on! We live out in the countryside with a little land in the holler, so there is always something to do out

here. It never ends this time of year does it? Weeds need pulled, grass needs mowed, sticks need picked up from the wind or storms, patio needs swept, windows need washed, and there is always something to power wash or a vehicle that needs a good washin’. It is NEVER ENDING. But when I’m outside, and it’s not hotter than a hot pocket microwaved for 6 minutes, I’m happy. And knowing dinner is ready, just sittin’ inside my fridge waiting to be popped in the oven!? Well, that makes me happier than a birdie with a french fry! Quiche is a tasty easy dinner to have ready on days like these. I make bagels with it and a side salad or fresh fruit, makes for a delicious dinner. Cinnamon raisin bagels are the best, you get that salty and sweet together. Mmmm. Mmm. Makes a heck of a pair! If you don’t like ham, you can use bacon or sausage too. They are all pretty great. You’ll thank me when you have extra time to pull those weeds. *Insert cheesy smile here* You know I love my cheesy smiles and a good delicious ready made meal. Ham and Cheese Quiche • 1 pie crust softened as directed on the box • 1 cup milk

• 4 eggs slightly beaten • 1/4 tsp salt • 1/4 tsp pepper • 1/2 lb. chipped baked ham • 1/2 cup Extra Sharp Cheese shredded • 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Using a shallow sided 9″ inch glass pie plate place the softened pie crust inside and crimp the edges.Add the chipped ham and cheeses to the bottom of the pie crust. In a medium bowl mix the milk, eggs, salt and pepper, then pour over the bacon and cheese. Bake for 45-50 minutes or until a knife, inserted in the center, comes out clean. Let set for 5-10 minutes before cutting. Has to sit in order to cut.

Q: A: Q: A:

Purchasing a home is exciting but, can also be stressful. Understand your purchasing power by talking with a mortgage lender who can educate you on which mortgage type is the best choice for you. This process will help you to understand your budget for purchasing a home. Additionally, the lender will help you realize monies needed for a down payment and closing costs. First things first, understand your buying power. The lender will provide a “pre-qualification” letter that must be submitted with the sales agreement when making an offer on a home.

How long does it take to buy a home? Many factors can determine how long it takes to buy a home. First, it’s all about supply and demand – are there more buyers than sellers or more sellers than buyers? Secondly, mortgage lenders may differ in the time it takes to process your loan. On an average it takes 45-60 days from the time the sales agreement is executed until you reach the closing table. There are some lenders who can close on a home in 30 days. Check with your lender to know what their average time is to close.

What is a seller’s market? Currently we are in a seller’s market; there are more buyers than homes on the market. In this type of market, multiple offers are typical. In a seller’s market, it can be typical for a home to sell quickly and at a higher price than expected. Buyers need to be ready to make a quick decision on submitting their best offer. Whether a buyer’s or seller’s market, a multiple offer situation leaves the buyer with little or no room for negotiating power with the seller.

What kind of credit score do I need? Mortgage lenders may differ on their qualification needs. Many factors may determine the credit-score lenders are requesting. For example, prior to the pandemic, some mortgage lenders accepted a credit-score lower than 640. Why? The economy was at an all time high and unemployment was at its lowest. When the pandemic stay-at-home orders were issued, unemployment rates became far worse than one could have ever imagined and the ESTATE AGENCY uncertainty of when life would return toREAL “near normal” encouraged lenders to re-evaluate the borrower’s financial stability. am an unashamed enthusiast for promoting Lycoming County and this general area. I have lived in large cities and enjoy the opportunities and activities they offer, but for overall quality of life — I would not trade this place for anywhere. This same attitude is shared by the Lycoming County Commissioners as well as virtually every one of the government and community leaders that I have had the opportunity to meet and know. For the most part, they are all sharp enough and talented enough that they could live and work anywhere, but they choose to live here. This leadership has been exhibited during the two recent crises that have impacted our country; COVID-19 and the George Lloyd demonstrations and riots. Both of these events have taken a very deep toll in our country. Through

the past couple of months, the commissioners have worked extremely hard to walk that fine line of compliance with Governor Wolf ’s quarantine mandates and also pushing him hard to recognize that our circumstances were not what was being experienced in the heavily populated areas of Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, or Harrisburg. It has been a delicate tap dance for our local leaders as the state government controls a lot of tax money that flows our way, and as the saying goes, it is not smart to bite the hand that feeds. COUNTY HALL unity, the three commissioners have made a strong case for the physical and economic health of our area. The other crisis has been the explosive and destructive demonstrations in major cities throughout the country. When a George Floyd-type protest was announced for Williamsport for Sunday, May 31st, there were many who were quite concerned. Commissioner Tony Mussare attended the event and found

himself duly impressed by what transpired. “Each individual sign held and every chant, expressed their inner emotional feelings. As leaders, whether we agree or disagree with their messages, we must pay close attention to them. We must act to improve what needs to be changed and implement those changes in a reasonable time frame. This action will assure that their message

was heard and that democracy will prevail over anarchy. I only witnessed one unfortunate outburst that was quickly extinguished by young men who understood how important this protest was to their cause and they should be commended for taking positive action that assured a peaceful demonstration. I observed young men and women handing out water bottles for the crowd and cleaning up debris that was left behind so our city looked clean and presentable

once the protest was over. I witnessed Justin from Domino’s Pizza, deliver pizza at no charge to the crowd and heard recordings from Dr. Martin Luther King that inspired people to gather peacefully but let your message be heard.” Commissioner Mussare noted that such a peaceful protest on that Sunday afternoon was a testament to our community and a shining example to the nation on how we must act in times of turmoil. He couldn’t be more right.

ontoursville’s fire alarm system will change at midnight tonight and the permanent telephone number to report fire or tragedy in the future

will be “”8385.” Through arrangements made with Capt. Norman Annich by borough officials, the fire alarm for the community will be handled at the Pennsylvania State Police barracks. A private telephone line has been installed to handle only Montour

William Messner conferred with Capt. Annich Friday and discussed details of the new system. The firemen will be greatly aided in their work by this new plan as announcement has been made that the practice of curiosity seekers calling to find locations and then going to the scene will absolutely not be tolerated. This will probably increase efficiency, it is pointed out, as all catastrophes including plane crashes, floods and drowning in the area, “come in” over the fire alarm system, thus the State Police will get first reports. going on in the world today. Pandemics, racial injustice, riots, etc., — the list goes on. I’ll admit, things have been weighing heavy on my heart as of late. Then I thought all of the things people of my parents’ generation have been through including World War and the Great Depression. It occurred to me that tough times forge us and help to make us who we are and if we pay attention, can even help us to become better people. One such person who was forged in tough times, and whom I like to think of as one of the forefathers of modern wellness, was Joseph Greenstein. If there is a single person reading this article that knows who this is I’ll be completely shocked but you might know of his work. Mr. Greenstein was the last great performing strongman, turned health promoter, of the Coney Island performers. When you think of

a man in a leopard skin flexing next to a show girl, or if you’re younger, a cartoon character of a circus performer lifting a heavy weight, the image was likely based on Joe Greenstein. He was born on July 15th, 1893 in the poorest section of Suvalk, Poland, near the German border to Jewish parents. He was a very sickly infant and wasn’t expected to live. In fact, the doctors present at the delivery offered to pay the parents money should the baby not live so that they might use the body for their medical studies. In what I like to think of as his first act of defiance, the baby lived and was named Yosselle. He was asthmatic, with slow physical development and at that time there was no effective treatment for either condition. Albeit slowly, Yosselle still grew, though it was likely that he would suffer the same

fate as his father who died at age 39 from a respiratory illness. One day, while he was still a young boy and unable to pay the fifteen-cent admission fee, Yosselle snuck into a circus tent to see the main attraction, Champion Volanko, a strongman that traveled with the circus. As he attempted to make his way to a better vantage point, he was seized by the neck by one of the circus employees. “Dirty little Jew, I’ll kill you” the man spat, and he proceeded to beat and kick the boy. As the story goes, the man actually intended to kill young Yosselle. Eventually the man tired and, as the boy was no longer resisting the blows and appeared dead, the man left. Peering out of half-closed eyes and barely able to move,

in. In addition, it was still somewhat rare to be a fitness/wellness professional with a strong formal education in health and exercise science so finding work was still fairly easy. The downside was that none of it paid well and since I was married and desired to start a family, I was conflicted regarding whether to stay in the fitness and wellness fields or enter into a more “adult” profession. I still wonder about my career choices but since I am fortunate enough to be able to pay my bills and my wife and I have raised five exceptional children, I have probably made the correct one. This somewhat convoluted introduction leads us into the theme of this article. What is your calling? As I was thinking about what I wanted to write about for this week’s column, I first thought about all of the crazy things

the Community Service hours that members continue to donate to various organizations throughout the school year. FBLA members are challenged to provide community service that impacts their community providing necessary volunteers for a variety of events. In addition, the entire Jersey Shore FBLA Chapter placed 5th in the William Selden Outstanding Chapter Criteria, which is an honor that demonstrates tremendous planning, hard work, and commitment to the ideals of FBLA. This is especially impressive when you consider there are almost 300 local PA FBLA chapters with approximately 13,000 members across the state. This award recognizes the Top 10 chapters at the State Leadership Conference based on the chapter’s efforts in the following categories: 1) Membership; 2) Public Relations; 3) Chapter

Club Awards recognize the preparation, effort, performance and commitment essential to real estate success. Though the awards are based on gross commission earnings, their true measure goes far beyond dollar amounts. As Sales Associates reach higher and higher milestones, their impact grows alongside their income.

The Roving Sportsman… Create a Memory for Father’s Day By Jon Pries

Y

ou can go to your local outdoor store and come up with numerous gift ideas for Dad on His Day. You can go online and find hundreds of great gift ideas to make His Day a little brighter. And, you can browse through the many catalogs you or he receives in the mail to come up with some great ideas. But, frankly, any such gift pales in comparison with what I am about to suggest. Store bought items or those things you can obtain online or through catalogs are OK, and they may even be something that Dad really needs or wants. And, I am sure they would be appreciated by Pop. After all, Dads are great people and you want to treat him right – you only ever get one Dad! But, what is the one thing that is valuable above all other things? Time. Yes, your time. And here is what I mean. You give him a regular gift, he opens it up, he likes it, he admires it, and he appreciates it. And, from time to time, as he uses that gift he remembers that you gave it to him and he is thankful for your thoughtfulness. But, what if you could spend a day or two with Dad doing something he loves to do and you create a memory that will last a lifetime

and strengthen the great bond you already have? If your Dad is into knitting or sewing, or his passion is music or the arts, I’ll let you figure out what to do. But, if he is an outdoorsman and loves outdoor sports, here are some suggestions: Is he a fisherman? If so, put together a trip for just the two of you to New York State to enjoy some of their salmon, brown trout or steelhead fishing either on a charter boat or on one of the numerous streams that provide outstanding fishing when the fish are headed upstream to spawn. Locally, there are fishing guides available to ensure that you and Dad have a successful day on one or two of our numerous trout streams or on a drift fishing trip on the mighty Susquehanna. If your goal is to have a day or two with just the two of you, then consider spending time on one of our many picturesque mountain trout streams in pursuit of native brook trout. You could plan to stay overnight and camp out to extend the time together. Ah, can’t you just smell the wonderful aroma of freshly caught trout frying in a cast iron skillet with butter, and then adding a dash of salt and pepper for taste? (You might want to take along a few hot dogs just in case!)

Sportsmen’s property will allow you to spend the day shooting handguns, rifles or shotguns. If you want to shoot a round or two of sporting clays, then Thunder Ridge, above Wellsboro is your closest opportunity. You might even consider signing up the two of you for some handgun training at the National Range and Armory at 531 Washington Boulevard in Williamsport. If you recall the song “Cat’s in the cradle,” sung by Harry Chapin, you will remember how time seems to slip away from a well-intentioned father and son, who, in the end, wish they had spent more time together. Take the opportunity this coming Father’s Day to make sure you do just that!

If hunting is his passion, then line up a day or two of hunting this coming fall. Whether it is for small game, deer, bear or turkeys, spending a couple of days with Dad will allow you to create some wonderful memories that both of you can relive over the years to come. Camping out overnight could be a pleasant addition to the trip, and what tastes better than a venison backstrap cooked over a wood fire? While you could arrange a trip together out west for elk or mule deer, your trip doesn’t have to be that extensive or expensive. The point is to spend time together – just the two of you. the lake. My brother and I were sitting in my boat casting our lures towards the shoreline edge in hopes of picking up some panfish or pickerel-a very common practice that fishermen have been utilizing for years. To our disbelief a man in a kayak was paddling the shoreline and he passed right through the area we were trying to fish-big no, no! Several times this spring while fishing from my boat we have had groups of kayakers paddle right through the area we were trying to fish but it’s not just kayakers we have had some other people run their boats up close and begin fishing the same spot where we were casting our lures. No doubt all this social distancing talk

and the push to get people involved in some kind of outdoor activity has resulted in more people hitting the lakes and streams and likely many of them are not familiar with acceptable “social distancing” practices. Even the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission is caught up in the “sixfoot rule” as is apparent in their full page ad in their last magazine issue. In that ad they advocate a distance of six feet apart as a minimum distance while fishing. I don’t agree and that is why I and a lot of other serious trout fishermen will not take part in the first day of trout season on many of our small and medium sized trout streams. When people are fishing it’s much more appropriate to allow at least a fair amount

MURRAY

of casting distance between fishermen to avoid line tangles and casting interference; that could be at least 20 or so feet. It’s also not appropriate to plow through a piece of water that is being fished by others nor is it ok to pull up next to someone you don’t know and begin casting into the spot they were casting. I’m glad to see more interest in the outdoors but I think it’s equally important that we all understand appropriate behavior while on lakes and streams. By the way, I wouldn’t recommend heading out in turkey season or deer season and walking up to within six feet of someone’s treestand that you don’t know and taking up your own stand-not good!

fishing a local stream a couple of weeks ago, I began fishing in a spot where no others were in sight. Shortly after I arrived, I saw a young man and his little son coming down to the stream to fish as well; I thought that was great that dad was going to help the little tyke maybe catch a trout. There was plenty of stream up above me but for some reason this guy chose to get up close to me and began casting over top of my line. Clearly this is not what you should be teaching the youngster; my admiration quickly departed and so did I. Every time I, and some of my fishing companions, have been out on a lake this spring, we have experienced other disturbing behavior by others utilizing

complete with the latest communications provisions. A sparkling new weight room is another jewel in Indians land. Thanks to gifts from the First Community Foundation Partnership of Pennsylvania ($58,500.17) and Muncy Bank & Trust Company ($40,000.00) Muncy’s athletes will now have available brand new equipment and state-of-the-art facilities. Those weight room facilities will also be made available to Muncy residents Monday – Thursday from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. at a $25.00 cost for a year-long membership. Chilson beams with pride and optimism when contemplating the new facility’s benefits for the Muncy athletic program. “This will be huge for us. It will enable our coaches to have more flexibility and for the kids to improve drastically. It has been

difficult putting together the game schedules and the practice times for all the teams with only one gym. It’s like putting together a huge jigsaw puzzle just trying to have some practice time each day. It’s especially tough on nights of home wrestling matches when the weigh-ins begin at 5:00 p.m. That means girls basketball, varsity boys and junior high basketball have to all squeeze in practices between 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. The teams may be getting only 45 minutes to practice. It should be a big difference maker for us moving forward.” The school district will be conducting a grand opening at a yet to be determined date.

“We are hoping that can be done by our Blue/ White event, which is a few weeks before our first football game,” Chilson added. “When it is ready, we’ll have a big day to invite the public in and unveil the project.”

The first floor lobby is spacious complete with a concession stand and public restrooms. The 84-foot basketball court sports a clean look uncluttered by a multitude of lines often seen in gymnasiums.
