Back to Life, Back to Reality By Jim Webb Jr.

W

ow! How great is it to see the baseball and softball diamonds full of young ball players? Just seeing people out and about enjoying all the wonderful things our area has to offer in summertime. The ability to go out for a bite to eat and a cold drink. To actually be able to attend a church service in person. All these amazing things we are so blessed with in our great Nation should never be taken for granted. Tip of my Red, White and Blue cap with the American Flag on the front to all the ladies that took me up on my offer to learn how to safely handle and properly use a handgun. The work end of this being provided by Adam Kordes and the good people at National Rifle & Armory. A special shout out to Louise Knight for her kind words. Louise was the first lady 67 years young or older to take me up on my 2nd Amendment offer to have the full cost of the class paid for. The first 50 spots offered filled so fast that we’re going to extend it to 100. For complete details you can go to webbweekly.com and check out my story from last week, “The 2nd Amendment is Not Negotiable” or give the good folks at National Range & Armory a call at 570601-4101 or go to their Facebook page.

I have some catching up to do this week. Thank you to Josie Latini, the owner of It’s My Party Store. When this whole crazy COVID crisis first started, she provided masks for everyone in my office. Including my Real Tree camo mask, which I also used during spring gobbler season to protect me from the turkeys. And to Mrs. Cheryl Musheno, who provided me my Red, White, and Blue all-American flag mask, which I used on an everyday basis. Next up on my catch up is the great folks at Dunkin Donuts. I have been a big fan all the way back to the Mister Donut days when Mr. Jim Bower leased the property in Newberry from my grandfather — Pappy Maietta. A few years back, the Bower family sold the local Dunkins to Jeral Forger and Monica Enright. They have been able to keep that local hometown feel of yesteryear and mesh it with the corporate Dunkin franchise of today. Tip of my Webb Weekly cap to Dunkin managers Sue Weaver, Loyalsock store, Tina Caroway, Southside, and Beth Lukowsky, Newberry. They hold down the fort at some of my most frequent stops. They, along with their staff, do an unbelievable job and helped provide normality during the Wuhan Flu shutdown. On May 5th, as we were all struggling with the everyday Groundhog Day feel

of the pandemic, Monica sent me a most uplifting message and picture. Her daughter Mya brought a handsome little angel, Avery Michael Santos, into the world. Monica’s first Avery Michael Santos grandson. This little bundle of joy and miracle of life, bringing smiles to so many with his arrival. The best part of publishing the Webb Weekly are the special friendships you build with people. Through the process of everyday business, folks become like family. Thank you for sharing, Monica and God bless you and your family. Another special Webb Weekly tip of the hat with the American Flag on the side to our local restaurants and eateries for their service during the pandemic. The good folks at The Villa, Mulberry Street Cafe, and Filippo’s provided some of my sons’ favorites at our family table. A silver lining during the Corona crisis was making up for all those lost dinners at home during my sons’ sports playing days. I am so glad I got this do-over, I just wish it were because of a different reason. A message to all young parents out there with kids playing sports, do not let athletics take over your life. The lost time at home as a family, the vacations, and especially the Sundays at church can’t be

made up. Please take it from somebody that knows; the kids grow up way too fast. Now moving on to the business end of things, within this week’s Webb Weekly, you find what is usually our Spring Home Improvement, this year it’s titled 2020 Home Improvement. Again, that COVID-19 thing I hate to mention caused the rescheduling. No matter what the project is that you’re looking to accomplish, there is someone that can be found within our pages to help you. There has never been a more important time to buy and contract locally. This is what keeps our communities strong, especially at a time of crisis. We take great pride in the Webb Weekly Home Improvement guides we publish each year and our relationship with the West Branch Builders Association. There are over 100 businesses in our 2020 Home Improvement guide. Think of it as a way of attending the WBBA Home Show, which of course, was cancelled this past March by Coronavirus. To close things out, a tip of my Phillies 4th of July cap to Mr. Joe Tedesco, Mr. Don Noviello, and the Lycoming County Softball Association. They have done an amazing job of bringing the Elm Park Complex back to life. It was great to watch some live sports action this past weekend. The fields will be primarily used for youth through high school aged softball. The complex will be named to honor Father John Manno. We will have much more on this in an upcoming edition. God Bless America.

Listen and Listen So Teens Will Talk” also by Adele Faber. This book is meant to be read with your teen, with talking points for discussions. Think of it as a family book club! The Empty Nest Dad. I imagine there are many nuanced emotional shifts as your children age out of your home and set to go out to make their own way in life. And the books I’ve been browsing that address “empty nest syndrome” are mostly geared toward mothers. However, for Father’s Day, you can’t go wrong with a classic like “Chicken Soup for the Soul: Empty Nesters.” This edition contains 101 stories written by parents sharing their experiences of saying goodbye to their kids living at home and looking ahead to the next chapter in life. I also recommend “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhoof ” from the ultimate father himself, Fred Rogers. This special edition of the classic advice book previously published as “You are Special” includes the article by Tom Junod that inspired the recent film starring Tom Hanks as Mr. Rogers. Grandpa! For the Dads who have done the work and are now lapping in the glow of beloved grandchildren, just get them a biography of some historical general. You can go the obvious route like Ulysses Grant or Patton, but if you want to go on a deep dive, may I suggest “The Life of Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry” vol 1. Yes, there are two volumes, so save the second for Pappy’s birthday or next Christmas, whichever comes first. Happy Father’s Day!

suming that the ages of 5 through 10 are prime parenting years. Children in this age range can wipe their own butts and play out in the yard mostly on their own. You can share hobbies and more interesting activities with them, but they are still manageable. Again, I’m assuming, talk to me in a few years. But, from what I’ve seen with my friends who are Dads to school-age children, they seem to be having a lot of fun. So, for the father of kids who still believe in Santa Claus and can now appreciate “Star Wars,” check out Jim Gaffigan’s “Dad Is Fat.” This isn’t a manual so much as a good laugh from the comedian who legendarily riffs on Hot Pockets, manatees, and all of the joys and horrors of life with five young children. Dads can read this, chuckle, and think “better you than me, man.” Fathering Teens. Having two girls, I am not looking forward to the teenage years; my husband even less so. If you have a Dad of teen girls on your gift list this Father’s Day, I recommend “Untangled: Guiding Teenage Girls Through the Seven Transitions into Adulthood” by Dr. Lisa Damour. This book emphasizes laying down rules and explaining the context of the rules. Thinking back on my own teenage experience, there wasn’t a lot of discussion about expectations and rules, just that we had to follow them or else. So, this book sounds really appealing for those of us who are fans of talking through problems. Speaking of talking, whether you have boys or girls, I also recommend “How to Talk So Teens Will

pproximately $4,000 in city scrip is still outstanding, according to City Treasurer Ben C.

The scrip is being held at the city treasurer’s office and will be retired on the redemption date, June 1934. If, however, taxes fail to come in rapidly enough to meet current city expenses, an amount of the scrip

sufficient to cover the need will be reissued. A total of $50,000 worth of the scrip in $5.00, $1.00, and $.25 denominations was delivered to the city treasurer’s office, March 23, and the first was issued to cover the city payroll for April 5. In addition to issuing the scrip as payment for city employees, the city used some of it to pay local bills. City merchants also purchased $4,000 to $5,000 worth of the scrip to use in making change. The circulation of city scrip reached the high point, April 20, when $33,000 worth was

None of the scrip has been used by the city in meeting payrolls or paying bills during the last two months. With the exception of two pieces, which came back to the treasurer’s office torn in two, all of the $50,000 worth of scrip is in good condition and can be used again if there is an emergency before the redemption date.

he euphoria of finally transitioning to the “Green” phase of the social/economic restrictions mandated by Governor Tom Wolf has been somewhat tempered by the reality that “Green” does not exactly mean “Go.” At the Monday, June 8th county press conference, government officials and community leaders strained to put the best light on the continual constraints that all of us in Lycoming County must still muddle through. The chairman of the Lycoming County Board of Commissioners, Scott Metzger, led off the parade by emphasizing how hard the county has worked to attempt to make the best of an arduous situation. He emphasized that the County Commissioners are not sitting pat on the ‘Green’ as this is not sustainable for economic survival. He noted the letter that all three commissioners signed and sent to Gov Wolf on May 26th did produce positive movement in the right direction. Other counties have followed Lycoming’s lead. Judge Nancy Butts and Sheriff Mark

Lusk followed by highlighting that business in the courthouse is moving forward, albeit again, with caution. Masks are still required, and foot traffic is highly discouraged. Much can be done virtually or by telephone, and this is strongly recommended. [For updates on the Court House, check out lyco.org/lycoming-CountyCourts-and-COVID-19-information] Two non-county officials were represented and provided very interesting perspectives. Dr. Rutul Dalal, MD, Infectious Disease Specialist at UPMC in Williamsport, had very reassuring words that, for all intents and purposes, there is no great danger out there right now in our area. 41 UPMC hospitals across the state tested over 30,000 people who displayed symptoms, and less than four percent tested positive. The UPMC hospitals tested 8,000 who were simply routinely checked who showed no symptoms, and 21 tested positive. Dr. Dalal summarized this by noting you have a much higher chance of getting in a car accident than coming down with COVID-19. He also emphasized that the public can be assured that the hospital is thoroughly safe. The chairman of the Williamsport/ Lycoming County Chamber of Commerce, Jason Fink, noted how faithfully the county has followed all the guidelines passed down from federal and state health officials, and the extremely low rate of infection is a testimony to that fact. But now (!), he pleaded, “We need to live life now! We need to get beyond the green phase, get back to living. Businesses need our support now.” Which was the plea echoed by Commissioner Metzger in his closing comments. He noted that the virus is a reality we have to live with and adapt to, but at the same time he said, “We are not going to shut down, we are not going to have our rights violated, we are going to respond responsibly, and

move in the right direction.” But he added the difficulty in knowing how to move forward is the lack of clarity from the state. What has to happen for “Green” to go for good? This lack of clarity may be by design. Behind the scenes, it would appear that our state government wants to continue to maintain these mandates as long as possible. Expect the goalposts to keep moving back. (By way of tongue in cheek) I offer to our state officials a proposal that instead of picking another color, let us consider shades of green — think of this as COVID Crayola. Each new shade brings fewer restrictions. Right now, with work and social restrictions still in place, we are in Maximum Green. Soon there will be some slack due to political pressure, which will result in fewer restrictions, and we will transition to a Middle Green. Following this pattern, there be fewer positive tests recorded (Jungle Green), fewer still positives (Forest Green), more political pressure (Olive Green), light at the end of the tunnel (Spring Green), etc. I know the state officials may want to continue this indefinitely, but even the Crayola box does eventually run out of shades of green. Let’s pray we don’t go to Gray.

HOME COOKIN fries, and a drink. I held the drink in between my legs and popped that cheeseburger in and out of my helmet as best I could. Man, this was awesome. Making memories on the Yamaha 850 Special. That sucker had a high-backed seat. Comfy as ever. I would hand Dad some French fries as we were heading through Virginia. Still black behind us, but we were staying ahead of it. The Pringles and McDonald’s satisfied me enough until we got into PA. I loved the BLTs at the Ranch House right off Rt. 15. It was my and Dad’s spot when we traveled that way. That night we stopped in for dinner; we were far ahead enough from the storm that we could sit, eat, and stretch our bodies out. By this time, it was getting dark, but we knew the hard part of the travel was over. Harrisburg to Willpo? Piece of cake! We got back on the road, and riding along the river, we got hit with so many bugs it was unreal! Our helmets and jackets were just covered in bug splat. So much for a piece of cake. When we finally got home, we were beat, but we made it! The rain stayed away from Central PA that next day, and Dad and I hung around the pool and got to eat lunch without eating through a helmet. Mom called us; they were on their way home. I’ll never forget her saying, “Boy I wish we were home!” They had that long trip we just did on a motorcycle, in one day, beating that storm that dad and I will never forget. With Father’s Day coming up, I wanted to share this story with you. A memory I will forever cherish, riding up the

coast at 13 years old with dear old dad. I am so blessed to have a Father who gave me so many wonderful memories, and still does. He was always full of surprises and made things so special. I love that he gave me the love for motorcycles instead of beaches and river muck instead of sand. I am so glad he made that trip that summer of ‘98 — Happy Father’s Day to all you wonderful dads out there. Baked Steak Take a Round Steak and cut into fist size chunks. Season with salt and pepper on each side, generously. Heat oil in a frying pan, and dip your steak into flour. Fry just until the outside gets brown. Place steak into a casserole dish and top with onions. Bake at 350’ for 2 hours, or until wanted desire. (Cover with foil, and poke holes in for the steam to come out.)One hour before it’s done, you can also place some carrots in with it, makes for a great tasting veggie!

Keystone Select and their staff should be commended for their efforts and for really truly changing the lives of these kids — oh, and by the way, they are doing it the next three weekends as well. If the rules can be lightened up a bit for fans and you can come and social distance respectfully, I guarantee you will feel so much better after seeing all the smiles and positive energy these kids will instill in your body and mind. Difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations, and the diamonds around the county last weekend were all beautiful.

miles are an excellent investment — the more you collect, the better you feel. Sunshine and Vitamin D seem to make a body kick into high gear. When you combine them both, you have an awesome day. Why do I sound like a doctor and scholar (and you know I’m far from that)? Because this past weekend all over the Green Counties, about 500 young ladies from ages 10-18 got to play the game of softball for the first time since C-19. The amount of positive energy in those parks was enough to take two Stay-Puff Marshmallow Giants — no Proton Packs required. Montgomery Head Coach Chris Glenn and his two partners at Keystone Select Softball worked their tails off to get I don’t know how many fields, schedules, and umpires together to make this happen SAFELY. They presented all teams and fans with rules like maintaining social distancing, cleaning and sanitizing of bleachers

and dugouts between games, only a few players in dugouts and the rest outside the fence, limited family members could attend, and others so that we could ensure a safe playing field for the girls and safe viewing area for fans. As I looked around the fields we were assigned to; it seemed as if the world had changed. People were extremely respectful of the rules, people respected each other’s space, and people loved watching their kids, grandkids, and siblings just playing the game that they all love. A mom from our team, whose daughter lost her senior season, literally closed her eyes during the pitcher warmups before game 1 to hear the POP of that catcher’s mitt. She had tears in her eyes when her daughter came to bat, saying, “I have waited so long for this.” That’s what sports mean to these kids and families. For a brief 48 hours, the world had stopped, there was no news to watch, no health updates, just girls cheering, girls laughing and parents clapping

and wondering why their daughter swung at that pitch, (haha). This past weekend was a major relief and a big mental boost to all those that played and attended. No Zooms or conference calls or ‘I need to check Moodle,’ for just that brief moment in time, life went back to normal for these girls. The new normal can be challenging, but to these kids, it was a true blessing, something they have been wishing and praying for the last three months. Sports can be done if thought out and planned properly. The guys at

This Week’s LION The Pike Drive-In By Larry Stout

I

n the not so very distant past, the local drive-in brought to mind the entertainment days of the AM Radio and 45 RPM records. It was 1933 when the first drive-in was created in Camden, New Jersey, initiated by an enterprising movie fan and sales manager named Richard Hollingshead, who noticed his mother found it difficult to sit comfortably in movie theater seats. His idea proved extremely popular, and within twenty-five years, there were over 4,000 drive-ins located throughout the United States. But from that peak in the late 1950s, the number of drive-ins began to decline, to the point where there are less than 400 in the entire United States today, with 27 located in Pennsylvania. And then out of nowhere, the COVID restrictions suddenly made the drive-in a viable alternative for a meeting place. Throughout the country, these blastfrom-the-past movie venues became the hottest ticket in town. This is what happened to Lycoming County’s last remaining drive-in, the Pike Drive-In on Route 15 near

Montgomery. The owner and director, Joe McDade, has noted that he has been swamped with requests for everything from church services to high school graduations in the past couple of months. For a number of different reasons, he had to turn away almost all requests but did consent to host the Montgomery Area High School graduation tribute held on Friday, June 5th. How the Pike Drive-In has survived when 90 percent have closed is itself a tribute to the ownership of this county icon. Opened on April 16, 1953, with a showing of the film “Son of Paleface” starring Bob Hope, the Pike became a very popular entertainment venue for several decades. But change was necessary, and change costs money, which is why many drive-ins began to die off. Management of the Pike, however, chose to make the investment. In 1991 it meant replacing the original concession stand with a new building and replacing the original wood screen with two new screens. In 1996 a third screen was added, and all three of these have been repainted in recent years. But despite continual improvements to the infrastructure, a drive-in needs

Q: A:

Q: A:

What type of Mortgage Loan is best for me? Working with an agent that is familiar with different loan products can really help you out. Certain loans offer no down payments, such as a VA loan for Veterans or a USDA loan for houses located in rural areas. Different banks also have programs where you put little to no money down on a house. There are also more traditional loans like a FHA or a conventional loan. All loan types have features to consider when choosing which one is right for you.

What will my interest rate be? Your credit score plays a factor into what your interest rate will be. Interest rates can change daily. Current interest rates are around a 3.5% which is low. Depending on your credit score it may be lower or higher than this. There is no way to predict changes in interest rates. Once you put in an offer and it is accepted, you can lock in your rate to prevent it from changing.

Q: A:

What if the Mortgage Lender or Bank says I can’t buy right now?

Q: A:

Can I finance improvements to the property along with my Mortgage Loan?

Most banks and lenders will offer advice as how to build up your credit or what to pay off in order to meet the debt to income ratio. Having an agent who is familiar with loan options can really pay off, since every bank has different requirements and products. Once you know your credit score and debt to income ratio, we can always look for a lender that fits your criteria.

The Pike has adapted their venue to the family market, as the most loyal customers are those with children who enjoy being able to watch a kid flick together, and then when the little ones fall asleep, the adults can watch another film more their age. It is actually quite a bargain for family entertainment, especially with free admission for age five and under. Like many small businesses in these uncertain times, however, the future is in the balance. Besides the variability of weather (not just rain, but even tornado watches can cancel viewings), there is even the viability of the movie industry itself, especially with the world’s largest movie chain, AMC Theaters, announcing recently that they may have to file for bankruptcy. A film like “Wonder Woman 84” is a sure hit, and was scheduled to come out in June, but its release keeps getting pushed back. It isn’t easy to draw a crowd without something to draw them. But for all that, the Pike Drive-In has been a survivor and hopefully will hunker through these trying times. Lycoming County is fortunate to have such an iconic symbol of the past, and as we recently learned, sometimes the past is what we need to make it through the present. (For more info, check out their website: pikedi.com).

movies to show. In 2012, the movie industry realized that they could save millions of dollars on shipping costs by transitioning from celluloid to digital prints. Instead of a film that is the size of an automobile tire, they now are about the size of an external hard drive. (Which is actually, in fact, what they are). It required specialized projectors to utilize this new format, which was extremely expensive. According to the National Association of Theatre Owners, 75 percent of the drive-ins in this country are privately owned small businesses. For many of these low margin driveins, this was the final straw. The Pike Drive-In was as cash-strapped as others and tried running a fundraiser for the new projectors. Though it only brought in modest funds, it was a symbol of a vote of confidence that caused the management to take the plunge and make the financial investment to keep the Pike alive. Another secret of the Pike’s survival has been the commitment of the employees. Obviously, all are part-time workers, but the crew of eight that keep the Pike Drive-In running are amazingly loyal, most have worked there for many years. They know that the experience is more than just watching the films, so they work hard to keep the grounds clean, the grass cut, and made as safe as possible.

The Roving Sportsman… Trees for Habitat Improvement By Jon Pries

A

EXISTING TREES: s a starting point, you should do a survey that identifies the trees currently on your property that provide feed for wildlife, such as oaks, beech, black cherry, walnut, butternut, hickory, chestnut and old apple trees. Also note the existence and location of evergreens that provide cover for wildlife. Use this data to help plan where and what you can do to maximize their benefit for both game and non-game animals and birds. If you can, avoid cutting down any of the cover or food producing species and work future plantings or food plot developments around these existing trees. Keep in mind that white oak acorns are preferred by game – over acorns produced by any other of our native oaks. Consider daylighting (removing surrounding trees that are taking some of the moisture and nutrients from the target tree) some of these native trees to aid in their growth

and feed production. Daylighting is particularly beneficial to old existing apple trees. When laying out an area for a food plot, you might leave these trees standing along the edge of the food plot or remaining in an “island setting” in the middle of the plot. Thus, they will receive more sunlight and having less competition from nearby trees, allowing them to be more productive. Pruning out dead limbs and sucker growth on these apple trees is very beneficial for the long-term health of the tree. It would also be very beneficial to fertilize them twice per year with 10-10-10 fertilizer. PLANTING TREES FOR WILDLIFE: When looking into what trees to plant that will add to your inventory of trees that benefit wildlife, try to stick with native stock. Over the years, various state agencies and wellintended organizations have promoted different “new” trees and plants that were supposed to be the latest and greatest thing to plant for wildlife – only to, years later, label them as invasive plants that should be removed wherever possible.

damage from deer activity, and you may have to consider something much sturdier if bears might be a problem in your area. A spiral cover should be added at the base of seedlings to prevent girdling from mice or other rodents. Feed any new seedlings twice each year with a cupful or two of granular 10-10-10 fertilizer. As the seedling grows, the fertilizer should be placed in a circle at the outermost dripline of the branches. Pruning out any damaged limbs, sucker growth and shaping the tree by pruning will make for a healthier tree. A noteworthy source of chestnut trees is Tree Pro in Indiana, (www. treepro.com), particularly because they have hybrid varieties of chestnut trees that tend to produce nuts in the specific months of August, September, October or November. Most chestnut trees will produce nuts for a duration of a few weeks, but combining these four varieties when planting will yield months of production. Our area nurseries carry a selection of numerous varieties of habitat improvement trees in potted or bareroot seedlings, or you can order them for springtime of fall planting.

45 • Webb Weekly June 17, 2020

Most birds and animals prefer a variety of food in their diet, so look into what and when the trees you will plant will bear their fruit or nuts. Trees that you are adding can be either planted in an orchard setting, along existing edges of fields or forests or incorporated in the design of a food plot. Apple, crabapple, American plum, and pear and persimmon trees will produce desirable soft mast. Native flowering dogwoods yield berries that wildlife will eat and the trees add color to the landscape as their flowers bloom in the springtime. Chestnut, oaks, hickory, walnut, butternut and American hazelnut trees yield hard mast for deer, turkeys and other wildlife. With any of these trees that you may be adding to your habitat, it is best to plant more than one, in case cross-pollination requires more than one of the species. Any of these new trees will prefer open sunlight, thus will do well in an orchard setting or along field or forest edges or the transition zone between an open food plot and nearby forests. Keep in mind that any seedlings you plant will need protection from browsing by deer or damage by curious and mischievous black bears. A wire cage will protect the young tree from

The bottom line is my three day “research “ proved successful and all the species I “specialize in” were caught but I think more research is needed to determine what methods and techniques work best and under what conditions? lake. The lake offers a variety of warm water species including bass-a favorite for both of us. I don’t keep bass either but it’s important to remember that until later this month all bass must be quickly released. Trust me, there’s a big difference from pursuing trout in a moderate sized stream to chasing largemouth bass in a stump and weed invested lake. On this day we would be using heavier spinning gear and casting gear with 10 to 20-pound test line and leadhead jigs with an assortment of plastic worms and creature baits; the day before I was casting a tiny artificial black ant with one pound test tippet! As it turns out the bass and pickerel were still in the deeper water and our “wacky rigs” and Carolina-rigged plastic lizards worked on the bottom proved successful with each of us hooking into a number of good bass and pickerel. Day one was trout, day two was bass and pickerel and now day three would be devoted to pursuing a variety of panfish. My wife, Sheila, and I headed off to a different lake in hopes of hooking into a good number of panfish — particularly crappies and bluegills. After working around the lake for a time we eventually found the ticket to success; we fished our small leadhead jigs and plastic grubs

in college and while Dad and I had a great relationship, on Father’s Day it was longdistance. He relocated to Arizona and although many trips were taken his way, Father’s Days were always spent on the telephone. ‘Like father, like son’ is a familiar saying and even though I didn’t subscribe to that theory in my younger days, the older I’ve gotten the more true that statement has become. The same is beginning to be said about Doug, especially by his wife, Angie, ‘if I want to know what Doug will be like as he gets older, all I have to do is look at you.’ That’s one of the job descriptions of a Dad, pass along to your sons and daughters not only the traditions of your family but the inspiration for them to raise their families well and do the right things in life. My Dad raised me to love sports and the competition and friendship it brings. For the younger Lowery’s and Fosters, those ideals are being passed down the line. As for a Father’s Day sports gift, I doubt any of you can top Jim Bunning’s gift to his dad on Father’s Day, June 21, 1964 (56 years ago to the date of this year’s Father’s Day). On that day the Philadelphia Phillies pitcher tossed a nine-inning 6-0 perfect game victory against the New York Mets. Hopefully, you’ll be able to find just that right gift for Dad on his day. But whatever that gift may be it won’t top a big hug and a thank you of appreciation for all that he has done for you over the years.

Covid-19. Since the first grandchild was old enough to walk we have all gathered at Knoebel’s Grove to socialize, eat and enjoy the various trappings offered by the park. It has always been a fun day highlighted by roller coasters, haunted houses and bumper cars. This year we will all be gathering, but the surroundings will be a bit tamer. It will be a backyard picnic with bean bag toss, croquet and basketball the activities of choice. It will be fun and we won’t have to buy tickets. The fathers among us, son Doug, son-in-law Ric and me probably won’t have to do much but tell stories and enjoy each other’s company, which in itself will be a wonderful Father’s Day gift. That tells the tale as to why there isn’t a quick word-association with the meaning of Father’ Day. Most Dads are just as happy spending the day with loved ones, playing a game of backyard catch, throwing a fishing line in the water or hitting the links for a round of golf. If your Dad is still among us, plan to pay him a personal visit, or if that isn’t possible pick up the phone and call him (skip the text messages). If he has passed and his resting place is near-by visit that location to express your own private thank you and remembrances of times spent together. Both my mother and father were fortunate to live long lives and Mother’s Day celebrations were shared in person. Father’s Day was not the same. My parents divorced when I was a freshman

Living Well…

Hydration is Essential for Staying Active this Summer By Dave Bellomo

T

he Summer season takes place in June, July and August which are typically the three hottest months of the year. In addition to high temperatures, these months can also be some of the most humid. Adding this hot humid weather to long periods of outdoor activity can spell disaster. Dehydration, hyperthermia, hyponatremia, heat exhaustion, and

heat stroke are just some of the negative health states that can be brought on by such conditions. Concerning dehydration, the loss of body mass of greater than 2-3% is the cut-off of most sport scientists for general safety. A loss of fluid and electrolytes beyond 3% has been shown to decrease motor performance. Fatigue has been shown to set in earlier under such conditions as well as decreased motor function. More importantly, however, is the

increased the risk of heat related injury. Heat is not the only factor in hydration with hot, humid conditions. The body’s natural cooling mechanism is for heat to rise from the core, through the bloodstream, Dave and eventually to the Bellomo surface of the skin through sweating. The evaporation of this perspiration leads to the actual cooling of the body. High humidity does not allow effective evaporation as the air is already high in

water content. So, the body continues to perspire in a vain attempt to cool the body. This leads to increased electrolyte depletion. Sodium and potassium are removed from the body via sweat at advanced rates. Under such conditions, over a prolonged period of time, drinking excessive water may lead to a condition known as hyponatremia. This potentially lethal condition is marked by a dangerously low level of sodium in the blood. Hyponatremia most often occurs during prolonged activities such hard outdoor work, such as bailing hay, or long sporting events such as marathons where people sweat profusely in hot, humid conditions and

indication of hydration state. After your activity, any fluid lost through perspiration should be replaced. Two cups per pound of body mass loss is a good rule to follow. In addition to monitoring your body mass, behavior and motor coordination should all be taken into consideration for general health status. Last, when in doubt, always consult a physician or qualified health professional. To make your Summer activity as safe as possible make sure that hydration and environmental conditions are considered. Everyone needs to understand the basic principles of hydration and body cooling both in normal and extreme weather conditions. Make sure that you consume not only adequate fluid, but also adequate amounts of electrolytes before, during, and after an activity. Last, to ensure the health and safety you and your loved ones, pay careful attention to behavior to see if everyone is acting appropriately or if closer examination for a heat related illness is warranted. With these few simple steps, you will be well on your way to having a fun and active Summer season. hydrate excessively with inadequate sodium replacement such as drinking too much water. This condition may deplete sodium to such an extent that there is a significant drop in blood pressure and an increased rate of respiration. If this condition persists, death may eventually result. What can be done to prevent hyponatremia and other heat related conditions? The first step in understanding adverse environmental conditions and hydration is knowledge. This includes knowledge of basic hydration practices and personal knowledge of yourself. When conditions are especially hot and humid it pays to monitor your body mass. Excessive loss of body mass through perspiration should be prevented by ingesting an adequate amount of fluid before, during, and after prolonged activity. The best and easiest place to store fluid is in the body, so several hours before an activity in hot, humid weather include fluid and electrolytes. A sports drink or salt added to a meal should do the trick. Also, immediately before an activity in this kind of weather an additional cup or two of fluid should also be consumed, though not so much that you become overfull. During the activity, continue with fluid consumption as indicated by perspiration and body mass loss, not thirst, as thirst is an unreliable
