America’s Civil War: An Ongoing Biblical Battle

A

bsolutely no man deserves to die like George Floyd did. An absolute despicable act perpetrated by a completely evil individual. The complete disregard for humanity, callousness, and arrogance as Officer Derek Chauvin executed this poor man as he knew the world around him was watching. A truly demonic act. This made more unthinkable by the facts he took an oath to protect and serve, and three fellow officers failed to step in and stop the murder of a handcuffed man. Before the rioting started, our Nation was United against this act of evil. I did not hear one person, whether they were law enforcement, elected to serve, or an American citizen want anything other than justice for George Floyd and the prosecution of those involved to the fullest extent of the law. It is hard for me to fathom what I have witnessed in the weeks since this happened. As you know, there’s not a bigger believer in our constitutional rights than I am. Black Lives Matter and groups that assembled in peaceful protest and remembrance of George Floyd should always be supported. This is truly the living, breathing Constitution of “We the People” at work. However, those that chose to cross that line from peaceful protest to criminal activity cannot be tolerated. The 1st Amendment has nothing to do with infringement on other Americans’ rights. Arson, burglary, murder, looting, and

crimes against your fellow man change nothing. They only create more hatred, violence, and take the focus away from the issues that truly need to be addressed. Nor do I believe these crimes are committed by anyone that cares about Mr. Floyd or his fellow man. Now, before I get into the difficult part of this conversation, I will remind you of my words written after Ferguson, Baltimore, and other emotionally charged times that occurred during the Obama administration. If you feel you have been discriminated against or treated unjustly, I will listen. If your situation is justified, I will stand with you and get you the help needed. I want every Americans’ life, livelihood, and wellbeing to be respected. There is currently a Civil War raging in our Country. We cannot allow political affiliation, the mainstream media, Facebook and the rest of social media, or the hatred from the far right- or left-wing fringe to divide us. This war being waged is one of good versus evil. You must use the weapons of common sense and the Golden Rule to not allow the above mentioned to create anger and hatred through deception. Simply ask yourself is what’s being reported or posted being done in the name of good or evil. Almost everything we are bombarded with every day is done to bring out the worst emotions in humanity. Mark Zuckerberg

and Facebook have created a direct line to hell. Like anything else working for evil, it’s camouflaged with good intentions. However, Mr. Zuckerberg wants to deceive, divide, and conquer for power and money. This can also be said for every so-called news network that tries to Jim divide and shape what they Webb, Jr. believe America should be. I’m going to try to stay away from addressing our current two-party system of division in this article. However, anybody that thinks the Democratic Party is what it was intended for and has not been taken over by the far-left wing fringe is sorely mistaken. I have already stated that Officer Derek Chauvin is pure evil, as is anyone that would use this time in American history to promote their racist, prejudiced, and/ or power-grabbing agendas. What has happened in Minneapolis, New York City, Seattle, and many of our major cities is pure evil. There is no way to justify violence and lawlessness in the name of anything. Again, common sense is what’s being done in the name of good or evil. It is not about the color of one’s skin; it’s about the person within. We cannot allow creators of hate to prey upon the white vs. black issue. What I have seen in all the footage I have watched is more white people committing criminal acts in the name of social justice, including those that, at gunpoint, took over that section of Seattle

and deemed it a political free zone. This is completely deplorable for so many reasons. Black America does not need your help; you are only hurting their cause. Then I’ve watched and listened as these young white people want to tell black people how to think. They believe they’re better educated and know more than the person walking in those shoes every day. This, to me, is racist. And the fact that you are committing crimes that Black Lives Matters and other peaceful groups are getting blamed for is pure evil. Again, common sense, who are you working for? This whole defunding of the police is complete lunacy. Again, common sense, is this for the good or for evil? Law and order versus lawlessness. Can you imagine where our Nation would be without law enforcement and those willing to put their life on the line each and every day? Any mayor, any governor, any elected official that believes in defunding the police and allowing lawlessness in the name of the 1st Amendment sure as heck ain’t working for the good. Can you imagine all the victims of crime we’re not hearing about because it doesn’t serve the mainstream media or farleft liberal agenda? Those that are purely victims of circumstance and just happen to live where they do. We must always stand in support of law enforcement to keep our communities safe. We must always stand united and hold all public servants accountable for their actions. There is no other option. The idea that you can only stand with one or the other is truly the devil’s deception. God Bless America.

’all. I’m starting to get bored. I know, I know, “starting?” One of the advantages of having an essential job during a global pandemic is that I have been getting out every day to go to work, see the customers I was able to, and felt good making my weekly grocery store trips. But now, summer is here in full force and I am starting to get a little bored. I want to go Knoebels! Or the beach! Or to the movies! But since none of those are viable options quite yet, I am looking to get outdoors. Don’t worry, I promise that no one has kidnapped me and is forcing me to write this. I know it sounds weird coming from the girl that considers being outsdoorsy drinking on a patio — but hear me out. Even though it’s generally not my bag, there is no denying the abundance of amazing outdoor activities available in our area. And since the typical indoor stuff isn’t totally available yet, it’s time to think outside the inside. I did go hiking at Rickett’s Glen a few weeks ago, but I have to say, it was kind

of miserable. It’s not really anyone’s fault, it was just that people had been locked down for so long, that EVERYONE Steph and their brother Nordstrom was in the park and it just made for a rough hike. One of the biggest things that I want to try this summer is kayaking. I’ve always loved the water, and this seems like a great way to have some fun, get some sun and maybe even a little exercise. The thing is, I know nothing about kayaking. I know that I shouldn’t just grab a kayak and hit the river, so at least there’s that. I figure my best bet is to start somewhere more contained like Rose Valley Lake. Plus, since I’m not familiar with where the best places to kayak on the local creeks are, this seems like the best starting point. I’ve done quite a bit of reading on the basics for beginners, so I think I’m set there. Hopefully this will be a fun new

adventure for me this summer! And if you have the inside track on the best places to kayak locally, please drop me an email! We have two vehicles that can carry the kayaks, so we can drop in one place and come out another, if you have suggestions for that! I know everyone is getting antsy even though we have gone ‘Green’. But the goal right now needs to be keeping everyone safe and healthy, and finding safe and healthy outlets for fun and recreation. So be like me! Not only because I am generally amazing, but look for something you haven’t done before and step outside that comfort zone and find a fun adventure you haven’t looked for before! You never know when you might find your new passion, or at least, new hobby!

or over 50 years, Williamsport’s Elm Park Complex has been synonymous with the best of amateur softball, both slow and fastpitch. After a few rough, down years, the complex is back — bigger than ever — under the auspices of the Lycoming Softball Association, headed by Joe Tedesco and vice president Don Noviello. Tedesco is the Muncy High School Softball Coach, and Noviello is a former Williamsport City Councilman. The complex bears a new moniker, the Father John K. Manno Elm Park Softball Complex. The new name came at the suggestion of Webb Weekly’s own Jim Webb Jr., who is a strong supporter and sponsor of the Lycoming Softball Association. “We can think of no one more beloved and deserving of such acknowledgment than Father Manno. Considering Father Manno’s work with our local youth, this memorial is particularly

fitting,” Donald Noviello told Webb Weekly. According to Noviello, “after nearly 50 years of existence, the complex experienced a period of minimal use and non-maintenance. After leasing the property from the city, the LCSA now has the opportunity to add to the history of the park. Through the generosity and selfless consideration of Jim Webb Jr., the LCSA is proud to announce the revitalization of the newly designated Father John K. Manno Memorial Complex at Elm Park.” The park will primarily serve a variety of girls’ softball teams ranging from NCAA collegiate teams to PIAA high school and junior high school teams as well as competitive travel teams and a number of league tournaments through the course of the playing season. With some effort, there will be attempts to accommodate some men’s slow pitch softball games when scheduling allows. Visions for the future of the complex include the desire to lay in a

to help with food services as well as operating its own limited concession stand. Parking is also free, but there are smoking restrictions, and dogs are not allowed inside the fenced area. Within the coming month, the LCSA will announce a dedication ceremony to acknowledge all those who have assisted in the process and to fulfill the memorialization of the Father John K. Manno Memorial Complex. League officials are ever mindful of the precautions needed to protect players and spectators from the COVID-19 virus. “All participating leagues are subscribing to sanitation expectations. We will be adhering to the Department of Health and CDC guidelines,” Noviello said. “Presently, we are simply grateful that we have the chance to offer an addition to our quality of life. The greater good is that our young minds who participate here are under positive mentorship, and who are supported actively by the presence of their families at the games. LCSA recognizes this as an opportunity to present some good local athletes to the public and continue to foster the family values that produce such outstanding young individuals.”

handicapped/special needs field for public and organizational use. A fourth regulation field would also expand the park’s future use. LCSA would like to diversify the park’s use as much as possible with a number of potential offerings for the future. A proposed portable ice-skating rink has garnered much support. Other potentials could include small weekend carnivals, auto shows, flea markets, even Christmas tree sales. Whatever draws a crowd safely. However, for the present, the idea is to get teams on the fields. There have been two weekend tournaments so far that have been responsible for the booking of over 500 hotel/motel rooms, thus helping to boost the local economy as it recovers from the virus shutdown. Other local businesses have benefited from those who have attended the games. The expectation is that there will be more than 800 games played over the summer. The response from various leagues far and wide has been overwhelming. With the exception of some PIAA games, admission to the games is free to the public. LCSA has extended invitations to the food truck organization and other local businesses

County Hall Corner: Ed Robbins Juvenile Probation Champion By Larry Stout

O

n July 10th, Lycoming County Government will be losing yet another one its exceptional department heads. The county commissioners should be commended for their ability to find excellent replacements for these departing chiefs, but they will need to find someone with really big shoes to fill those of retiring Juvenile Probation Department Director Ed Robbins. Juvenile probation is an important part of the justice system. It is a form of juvenile sentencing which attempts to do two things at once; serve as a punitive measure yet at the same time seek to reduce the risk of the juvenile offending again in the future by rehabilitating them. Working with troubled youth is obviously not a pleasant task, as it requires discipline with compassion, wisdom with intuition, and practice with patience. It takes this to deal with teenagers that commit property offenses, public order offenses, drug law offenses, and worst of all, person offenses. In Lycoming County, Ed Robbins has managed eleven juvenile probation

officers (JPOs), three clerks, and a deputy chief since May of 1998. Ed was prepared to head the Juvenile Probation Department because he had spent the previous twelve years working his way up the ranks. Starting out as a shelter care worker that was used for at-risk youth and truant kids, he then went on to day treatment to teach life skills, and then a JPO, and ultimately department head. Ed has seen a lot in his 34 year career in juvenile probation. The overall juvenile population in the county is roughly 10,000 and through the years about four to five percent get into trouble. The rate of juvenile crime was relatively steady through the 80s, 90s, and early 2000s

COUNTY HALL until the recession of 2008. That crash caused serious financial restrictions which resulted in budget cuts. Where this was felt most severely was the lack of funds to utilize various detention centers around the state for the most serious youth offenders who needed specialized treatment. With state funding shrunk to half of what it had been, many detention centers throughout the commonwealth were forced to close, and this created something of a crisis. But sometimes crisis creates opportunity, and this is what happened here. After 2008, a new statewide

program was designed called the Juvenile Justice Enhancement Strategy. Far too complex to explain in any detail here, it is an amazing tool that reviews every aspect of the juvenile justice process, collects and analyzes the data necessary to measure the results of these efforts; and then with this knowledge, strives to continuously improve the quality of the decisions, services and programs that are utilized in Juvenile Probation. Directors like Ed Robbins now could make informed decisions based on evidencebased information, using this research to design and utilize programs that work.

And they did work. In the past ten years, the juvenile delinquency rate is measurably lower. Not only that, but the networks have strengthened, as the JPO office also networks closer with the schools, Children and Youth Department, and of course, the parents themselves which also has strengthened the effectiveness of the programs. Ed Robbins has overseen all this with a professional yet personal hand. He was not the type of director who sat in the office, but one who was actively involved. Ed noted that just recently he was able to congratulate a young man who had gone through their system and has recently graduated high school, yet this time last year he was on the verge

of dropping out of school. Ed notes that hardly two weeks go by that someone does not recognize him on the street and share their appreciation for what the JPO and/or he personally did to help change their life. Ed plans on taking some well-earned rest for a few coming months and then has accepted a teaching position at Lycoming College. He has been teaching there on a part-time basis since 2000, so he is certainly well prepared. It is refreshing to know that the wealth of knowledge and experience he has gained is going to be deposited to a future generation. Ed’s success is a guide to all of us — give your heart with your head to the work of your hands.

The Bookworm Sez By Terri Schlichenmeyer “Camp Girls: Fireside Lessons on Friendship, Courage, and Loyalty” by Iris Krasnow c.2020, Grand Central Publishing $27.00 / $34.00 Canada 256 pages

E

ven if you wanted to, you couldn’t count all the stars in the sky. It’s a perfectly clear night to try, though. The campfire’s lit, and its crackly sound competes with tree frogs; conversation is soft, refreshments are cold, and you’re almost dry from a dip

in the lake. This kind of evening is just what your tired, tired-of-it soul needs. As in the new book “Camp Girls” by Iris Krasnow, it’s what you’ve always loved. The first year she went to an all-girls’ sleepaway camp near Minocqua in northern Wisconsin, Iris Krasnow was six years old, and her mother cried. To put it into perspective, Krasnow says, her mother was a Holocaust survivor, and the word “camp” meant something entirely different. Krasnow said she cried, too, but just a little; her father’d been talking about all the things she could do in the woods of

Wisconsin, and she was excited more than scared. The possibilities seemed endless, but the reality was different: a quiet, somewhat reclusive child, Krasnow struggled to fit in those first days. She eventually found friends, though, and then made up for lost time. And so it remains: the girls-turnedwomen she met at Camp Agawak have supported, loved, and counseled Krasnow for six decades. Partly in homage to them, she returns to northern Wisconsin every summer to help new generations of girls explore nature and find lifelong memories. Camp, she says, gives girls confidence. It teaches them self-sufficiency, determination, self-reliance, and

empathy. They learn skills that follow them to adulthood and a career. There’s community in a campground, camaraderie, and more: former girls repeatedly told Krasnow misty-eyed tales of the bonds created at camp, and the sisterhood they found. The years since childhood always seemed to evaporate during the storytelling. “There is something about summer that intensifies those bonds,” Krasnow says. “... we coaxed each other through the tunnels of youth, going in as timid girls in the dark, and coming out as feisty and enlightened women.” Let’s start here: if the smell of campfire or the sticky taste of s’mores don’t speak to a certain place in your heart, this isn’t

on innocence. Men can surely read this book but it’s really more for former girls, especially those who pulled their bedraggled camp backpacks out and filled them early. For you, “Camp Girls” is four stars. *** If you long for nights under the stars and the warmth of sleeping bags, then you also need to find “From the Lookout: Memories of Peninsula State Park’s Summer Camp for Girls” by Kathleen Harris. From 1916 to 1948, this girls camp welcomed girls from all over the U.S. and Canada. Former campers may be delighted to see its full list of staff, campers, and hometowns over the camps’ 33-year history.

a book for you. On the other hand, if you spent your childhood Aprils eagerly anticipating your Julys and Augusts, then “Camp Girls” will make you wistful for years gone past. That’s what author Iris Krasnow offers here: nostalgia, mixed with the smells of smoke and lake, remembrance of first romance, and the words to familiar camp songs-cumlullabies wrapped up in stories of her career, her family, friends, and kids’ camps in general. Reading it will take you back to slapping mosquitoes and itchy sunburns, but you’ll also look forward as Krasnow writes of how camps operate today, and how they stay relevant in an age heavy on Instagram and light

HOME COOKIN amazing dinner. When the sun went down, there were these flickers out in our woods starting to show. “Ohhhh MOMMA!!! Lightning bugs!!!!!” My 6-year-old daughter couldn’t believe her eyes as it grew darker and all the lightning bugs started coming out. The joy she had out there catching them in her hand was priceless. When I told her that it was time for bed, she was bummed, but I said they will be around for a while. Another summer treat we get to enjoy. There

is just something about lightning bugs in the summer. Kenzy sat in her window after we tucked her in just watching the twinkles all over in the yard. Whether you hate or love summer, it is what you make it. There is joy in every season. To see the joy in your kids, just through a lightning bug, makes it that much better. And, those sausage sammiches. *BIG SMILE* Hot Sausage Get your favorite hot sausage or

mild sausage, then grill them babies on the grill. Cut up two peppers, one green and red. Fry them with about 1 tablespoon of olive oil. Once they start getting tender, add a half of chopped onion and cook as well. Cook to your liking. Top on sausage sandwich. NOTE: Another way to do this if you don’t grill, is add sausage in a crockpot instead. Top with one jar of a good brand tomato sauce (240z), then add peppers and onions. Cook on high for about 4 hours.

Hope in a Season of Rain, Part Two

E

arly on in the pandemic shutdown, a box arrived at our house. The writing on the box made it obvious it had been sent from oversees. Our older son Reid is currently living in Hong Kong. For five years before moving to the island, he had lived on mainland China, so it certainly crossed our minds that it could be from him. My wife opened the box and much to our surprise, it wasn’t. While our younger son Ryan was enrolled at Penn State, he became friends with a student from China whose English name is Shelly. For about a year before her graduation, we had the privilege of being Shelly’s American family.

She experienced her first Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter holidays with us. We also had the joy of developing a long-distance friendship with her mother and father who live in Shanghai. Their English names are Wilson and Helen. When Shelly graduated from PSU, we had the joy of hosting Shelly and Helen at our house. It was an experience we cherish to this day. After graduation, Shelly moved on to New York City to earn her Master’s degree and later got married. Over the years, our lives went in different directions and we basically fell out of touch. So you can imagine our surprise when we

discovered the box had been sent from Wilson and Helen in Shanghai. It was filled with face masks and rubber gloves. The only correspondence in the box was a handwritten note that said, “The mountains and rivers are different, the wind and the moon are the same. Walk hand in hand. Embrace Tim the future.” Hartzell Wilson and Helen live on the other side of the planet in the very country we blame for starting the global pandemic. They are aware that many of our citizens are holding China, and the Chinese people, in contempt. They hear the news stories of Chinese people in the US who

are being maligned and mistreated because of the pandemic. Those reports must be causing heavy rain in their hearts. But in a season of rain, they decided to pour out hope. Friends, Wilson and Helen are Buddhist, Chinese, communists — at least those are the meaningless labels we would stick on them. The labels seem important to us, and I think it’s because it gives us someone to blame for our problems. Blame shifting is a fundamental human flaw. It started with Adam when he blamed Eve for his problems, and continued when Eve blamed the serpent for hers. We just love to blame others for our misery. Doing so allows us to treat them as “less than”. And when one human treats another human as “less than”, the end result is ugly.

FAITH

Wilson and Helen could have felt wounded and rejected. Instead, they poured out hope. Friends, if Buddhist, Chinese communists can figure out how to pour out hope in a season of rain, then surely the followers of Jesus Christ can do the same. If we can’t, then we need to stop wearing His label. Without the demonstration of self-less love, His label can’t stick to us. “But God demonstrated his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” See Romans 5:8. In the midst of our rain, Jesus poured out hope — and to this day He is calling on His followers to do the same. If we can’t get that right, then His label doesn’t stick. Period.

Last week, Heather and I were walking on the Lycoming Creek bike path. In the distance, we could see a man riding his bicycle as he headed in our direction. As he passed by, he gave us a big smile and said, “God bless you!” It was not an especially unusual occurrence because the people on the bike path tend to be very friendly. But this brief exchange happened in the midst of the racial unrest that has upended our country - and the man on the bicycle was black. In the midst of his rain, he decided to pour out hope on Heather and me. Beautiful. Hope in a season of rain is a grace-filled miracle, a blessing, a lifting of the heart and soul in the midst of darkness, sadness and fear.

Listen, the mountains and rivers may be different, but the wind and the moon are the same. So walk hand in hand and embrace the future together. A prayer offered to two American Christians by two Chinese Buddhists. No, a beautiful expression of hope in a season of rain poured out by two lovely human beings. What a treasure — and AMEN! Friends, it is raining. There is much darkness and fear and hatred in the world today. The pandemic and civil unrest have turned the rain into a deluge. But for those who live under the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the call to love has not changed. If anything, the call to love grows louder even as the storm clouds gather. Is there someone you can blame for the rain in your life? Of course there is. We humans can find someone to blame for everything.

Yet Jesus never played the blame game, instead He chose to love. He calls on you and I to do the same. There is no need for me to enter a debate about who is right and who is wrong. We already know that we are all wrong. As we read last week in Romans 3, we are all guilty. The only holy option we have is to demonstrate love to each other. When we argue and debate over who did what to whom, all we accomplish is blame shifting and the widening of the division. Someone must love — and someone must love first. That’s what Jesus did. While we were still powerless and sinful, at just the right time, Jesus died for us. In doing so, He demonstrated that love. Note: You can read part one by going to www. webbweekly.com.

Of course, that may not be realistic especially if you share a bathroom and/or are working with limited counter space for having them dry out (more on this in a bit). Taxes are based on the assessed value of the property and the millage rate that is specific to each municipality. Some municipalities have higher millage rates than others based on the needs of that specific area, as property taxes are an important source of revenue for the community. Millage rates can be found on the county website. Some municipalities may have higher taxes, but you may also be able to get a larger or more updated home for a lower price in those areas.

Calculating the value of a home is a complex process, and location is only one piece to consider in making that determination. Realtors must examine the condition of the property, lot size, upgrades, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, zoning, etc. A strong real estate market also greatly impacts property values. In my experience, there are buyers looking to live in both rural and urban/suburban areas, so value would be more specific to the features of that specific home.

Ask lots of questions! If you like to do research, check out some of the school rating sites like niche.com or greatschools.org. But my advice is don’t stop there! Talk to friends family and even teachers in those districts. And don’t forget to talk to the schools as well! If you reach out to the school your child would attend in thatESTATE district, most will happily REAL AGENCY set up a meeting to discuss their school’s strengths and benefits and any specific concerns you mayYour have Premier for your child. CURIOUS ABOUT THE BENEFITS OF SPRAY FOAM?

There are lots of great resources you can use to learn about neighborhoods. While Realtors aren’t permitted to give specific direction on this, there are other ways to check. Spend some time in each area, talk to neighbors or friends nearby, or even contact your local police departments. A quick Google search can also provide statistics that can give you an objective idea about the safety of each area.

less makeup than normal try to wash your sponges after every two to four uses. Obviously, this does not apply to disposal makeup wedges. How you clean your tools depends on the cleanser you pick. Liquid brush cleanser is fairly common and available at most drugstores. I prefer e.l.f.’s daily use cleanser that comes in an easy to use spray bottle. There are also shampoos for a deeper clean as well as solid brush soap. I’m

interested in checking out Anne’s Giverny solid cleaner that can be used for both brushes and sponges. Regardless if you go with liquid or solid be sure to read through the ingredient label on a product before you use it, especially if you have invested in high-quality brushes. use product is the Beauty Blender, which is an egg-shaped sponge you use to apply primer, foundation, and powder. Their website also offers specific cleanser to keep your blender free of build-up and bacteria. In addition to their cleanser they also feature a protective case to store your blender. And the cutouts on this shatterproof case, will let the sponge air dry while protecting if from grime and germs. If you find you just don’t have the time (or the motivation) for a weekly deep-clean of your sponges and brushes, you can at the very least spritz on a little rubbing alcohol before each use. This way you are starting with a cleaner brush, even if you aren’t able to thoroughly wash them after putting on your makeup. Of course, even in regular times summer is the season for minimal makeup. Maybe give your face and brushes a rest and go with an au natural look, just be sure to apply a good SPF. Even when giving makeup a break it doesn’t mean you can throw out skincare all together, times aren’t THAT crazy!

sulfates, and animal fats. When cleaning keep a towel handy to squeeze away excess water after rinsing out your tools. Then smooth the towel over the top of brushes to reshape. You can leave brushes to dry with the heads hanging over the side of a counter or sink. However, you may not have the undisturbed space, especially if you , like me you have little ones running around the house that have a hard time keeping their grubby little fingers off of things that don’t belong to them. Consider investing in brush and sponge drying racks. Much like a toothbrush holder, you can get a small rack or stand to allow your newly cleaned accessories to get full air circulation, and hopefully have a place to keep them out of reach. Racks and stands can be found at Walmart, Target, and if you’re looking for something fancy check out Etsy. If you normally use your fingers to apply makeup, consider putting that practice on hiatus since no one should be touching their face more than necessary. A great multi-

The Roving Sportsman… A Healthy Respect for Timber Rattlers By Jon Pries

H

aving grown up in Lycoming County and having spent most of the years of my life roaming its hills and streams, I have had the opportunity to witness many of the wonders that Mother Nature offers. From the blooming of trilliums and later Indian pipes in the springtime, to the birth of fawns and grouse and

turkey poults, the summer evenings fishing for native brook trout in small mountain streams, and culminating in the fall and winter hunting of wild game for the dinner table – our great outdoors has provided years of amazing experiences and wonderful memories. Yet, as I sit and reflect on these past interactions with nature, there is always one creature that continues to make my skin “crawl” just a bit, and that is the timber rattlesnake.

I am well aware of the interaction of all species and that each and every creature has a purpose in the balance of our natural world, but I can’t help but feel that the timber rattler has a function that can be fulfilled by other much more pleasant species. At least, this is my opinion, which you may or may not share. While all species of rattlesnakes prefer to be left alone and, if they sense your presence, would rather move out of your way and be left undisturbed, they can, on occasion, be somewhat aggressive. It is said that during the

MURRAY

period when they are shedding their skins and their eyes become glazed over in the process that they can be more aggressive. With their reduced visibility, they might tend to lash out, or strike at things that their limited vision does not allow them to identify properly. And there are the times when, if you come upon them suddenly and they are surprised by your presence, they may strike out of a sense of selfdefense. This is natural on their part, but it can have very unpleasant results for you or your pet. So, what can you do? The first step is

valid annual venomous snake permit to hunt, take, catch, kill or possess a timber rattlesnake (or copperhead, for that matter). With the proper license and permit, you can take one per year during the season of June 13 to July 31, 2020. It must be at least 42 inches in length and must possess 21 or more subcaudal scales (identifying it as a male). But there is more to the regulation, and if you are serious about the proper procedures, you need to refer to the current edition of the Pennsylvania Fishing Summary handbook. Reptile seasons, limits and current regulations are covered in the manual. In support of leaving rattlesnakes alone, I was told by an unnamed Fish and Boat Commission Law Enforcement Officer that “You should leave rattlesnakes alone since they are what keep the “Flatlanders” at home in the city!” Timber rattlesnakes really do have their place in the general scheme of the natural world, and it is important that we take the opportunity to educate ourselves about them. In the meantime, maintain a healthy respect for them and if you come across one in your travels, give them a wide birth!

to educate yourself about our timber rattlers. In 2017, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission announced that they were taking the timber rattlesnake off the endangered list because their numbers had finally increased to a level where they no longer needed to be listed as endangered in Pennsylvania. For you, that means that there is an increased chance that you may encounter one when hiking, hunting or fishing. But, if you leave them alone, they will tend to leave you alone. From now until late September is the time period when more frequent sightings of rattlesnakes will occur throughout the state. Rattlesnakes have emerged from their dens and can travel up to five miles and beyond as they range for food and search for a mate. Their mating season is from July until September and the birthing period occurs the following summer in late August and early September. Both males and females of the species can reach an age of 30 years or more. Legally, there is a rather complex procedure in place if you want to take a rattlesnake and wish to comply with the laws. First, you will need a current fishing license and must obtain a

out of harm’s way with some simple prodding with a stick. Finally, on the “slimy” side of things I recently waded into a clear stream to do a little fishing and minutes later I looked down by my feet and spotted a large Eastern Hellbender. Hellbenders are one of the largest salamanders in North America; this one appeared to be about 20 plus inches in length. It’s been several years since I have seen one. They live in clear, healthy streams and today I believe they are a protected species. Keep your eyes open-who knows what you might see even in your own backyard.

backyards is the common Black Rat Snake. As the name implies these snakes are black but in some cases, there may be traces of a spotted pattern. While these snakes are harmless, they can be aggressive when being captured; they will bite and their small, sharp teeth will definitely draw blood. Usually after being handled for a bit they calm down, stop striking and simply try to crawl away. These snakes can grow to a pretty good size; I have captured some at least six feet in length. They are often found near houses and other buildings in search of rodents, but they are also excellent tree climbers and I have spotted them well up in trees seeking out birds’ nests for their next meal. This past week I answered the call to remove a large Black Rat Snake from my neighbor lady’s backyard-it wasn’t invited to their picnic. If you are not familiar with and comfortable with handling snakes, you probably shouldn’t attempt to handle them. I’ve been catching and handling snakes since I was just a kid so it’s no problem for me. I don’t see a need to kill these snakes and they can often be shooed

of things happen in the weight room, or in meetings, where we can talk to kids about things going on in their lives. Even though we haven’t missed playing any football games; these past three months have taken away those kinds of opportunities. “We are all learning as we go as to how to safely proceed. At South Williamsport all the head coaches met with the athletic director to go over the guidelines that have been set. We have a lot more protocols to follow. At South we can’t have more than 20 players in the weight room at one time; the cleaning of the materials we use must be done after each use; hard-washing will be stressed; attendance must be taken; the coaches must be checked for symptoms, if any are found they have to go home; and the players have to have waivers from their parents before they will be permitted to participate. This are all steps being taken for safety, but these are things we will gladly do to allow the games to be played. “We have been told - at this point- when we go back to play that there will not be any fans in the stands. That could change by the time the season begins. All we can do is support those things the athletic directors are asking us to do. It is all aimed at stopping the spread of the virus and we are all going to have to do things we may not want to do to help achieve the number one goal of keeping everyone healthy. It will be different, but at least the kids will be able to play.” Let’s all help follow the protocols so that those games can begin.

very difficult. “We are still classified as a AA school this year and all the projections going forward for the next ten years indicate that we will remain either AA or A, but we won’t be increasing in enrollment. The move to the NTL makes sense for us. It is a wellrun competitive conference comprised of schools more similar to us than those making up the HAC.” Like every other football coach gearing up to go as the green light flickers, the past three months and the new protocols awaiting his team have taken their toll. “The best word to describe it is ‘stressful’, emphasized Eiswerth. “I’ve talked to other coaches around the area and everyone feels pretty much the same.
