A River Runs Through It

I

t’s great to see the Hiawatha back on the water. Now for one of those things that you lose track of in life that is going to make a lot of you out there feel old. The majestic replica of an old-time river paddleboat has been cruising up and back down the Susquehanna for nearly four decades. Boy time sails by when you’re having fun! The Red, White, and Blue all-American ship has become a summertime postcard for our area. Any time you travel over the Arch Street Bridge this time of year, your eyes just look for the Hiawatha. The gentle wake behind the boat as it navigates its way up the waters of the West Branch, nestled against the endless appearing rolling green of the Appalachian Mountains, makes for an amazing picture. A true Norman Rockwell type image of America. It also seems like something Mark Twain would have written about when you witness the boat effortlessly glide across the water. A tip of my Seattle Mariners hat to veteran Hiawatha Captain Mike Strunk. For all you baseball fans out there, no I’m not a fan of the ball club. However, I was a huge Ken Griffey Jr. watcher back in the day. A throwback to that feeling old thing, I also watched his father play. A little MLB Trivia for you — Ken Griffey and

“Junior” actually took the field together for the Mariners in 1990. They became the first father-son duo to ever appear on the same lineup card and actually play together. Yes, I guess you could say I’m missing America’s summer pastime. Those Korean Baseball Organization — KBO — games just ain’t cutting it. If you haven’t seen them, it’s probably because they air at 5:00 in the morning. I apologize for getting off-topic, you know I get easily sidetracked. Back to Captain Mike at the helm of the Hiawatha. I’ve known Mike for years — talk about the right man for the job. He is the Susquehanna Valley’s equivalent of Captain Steubing from the “Love Boat.” For those younger people out there, you may have to Google it; it was a 1980’s hit TV sitcom. Mike has that Captain look, personality, and demeanor. I could see him greeting you at the Captain’s table of a Royal Caribbean Cruise or in a Captain Morgan commercial. All joking aside, Mike is truly one of the good guys in our area. He has worked alongside Gary Chrisman for years producing and airing local high school sporting events. He is employed by and uses his audio-visual talents at Williamsport High School and for his own company, Strunk Digital Video Productions. Mike definitely enhances

the Hiawatha experience. Please make sure you pull his leg a little bit and then thank the Captain at the end of a great voyage — provided he doesn’t run aground or hit an iceberg. A tip of my Pittsburgh Pirate cap to the good Jim people at River Valley Webb, Jr. Transit for keeping the Hiawatha ship shape. Skip Cochran and the gang do a great job promoting and making the grand old riverboat a tourist destination. If you’re looking for something to do, get out and enjoy a cruise right here at home on the Susquehanna. I guarantee you the view of the West Branch Valley from deck side is amazing. In talking about our river that runs through it, I would be remiss if I did not talk about a couple of the monsters that had been landed from its waters. Incidentally, “A River Runs Through It” is one of my all-time favorite movies. It’s a great family story starring Brad Pitt that was directed by Robert Redford. It’s a must-see for fathers, sons, and brothers. I remember the West Branch of the Susquehanna River when it was hard to find a fish in it. Now I am amazed by the quantity and size of fish being caught. It has become a fishing destination for many different species. Recently Liam Breasette was able to reel

to shore a 49” muskellunge. The battle between man and fish took over 1/2 an hour. Liam’s dad William joined the fight, and the father-son duo managed to land the trophy musky. Wow, that’s a big fish. My good friend Joe Worth last week told me about a morphed catfish he recently caught. It had features of both the bull and channel species. The whiskered, scaleless prehistoric-looking creature was 25 plus inches long and weighed in a nearly 6.5 pounds. Congrats, Joe. My son Jimmy on New Year’s Eve a few years back landed a walleye right near the Market Street Bridge. Like Joe, Jimmy is a catch-and-release, gets them back in the water as quickly as you can, fisherman. My Uncle Ron Maietta was still alive at the time and looked at a picture and commented, “that had to be darn near a state record.” Uncle Ron was a lifetime fisherman that spent much time in Canada fishing for walleye. Obviously, we will never truly know the tale of the tape. So, as you’re traveling up-and-down, the Susquehanna on the Hiawatha take a look over the side to see what may be lurking just beneath the water surface. If you’re a fisherman and happen to have a great catch of the day, please get the measurements, a good picture, and practice catch-and-release. I would love to tell your fish story within the pages of the Webb Weekly. God Bless America.

What to Take to a Picnic

T

he 4th of July may be behind us, but thanks to the Big Rona, summer picnic season is just getting started. But the question always is — what to

bring! I always feel a little bad if I don’t bring something and not everyone appreciates a cooler full of White Claws, so here are a couple of great recipes to bring along to you summer picnics this year. Chopped Chicken Salad with Pickleback Dressing This isn’t your average grilled chicken chopped salad — it’s so much better! With hearty toppings and a tangy pickle-spiked dressing, this potluck-friendly, make-ahead salad is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Whether or not you start with a shot of whiskey is totally up to you. Ingredients: • 2 boneless skinless chicken breasts (6 oz each) • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil • 1 tablespoon barbecue seasoning • 3 tablespoons spicy dill pickle juice (from 24oz jar) • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce • 1/2 teaspoon sugar • 1 cup mayonnaise • 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped • 3 hearts romaine, chopped (about 10 cups) • 1/2 cup chopped cooked bacon • 1/2 cup crumbled sharp Cheddar cheese (2 oz) • 1/3 cup chopped spicy dill pickles • 1 plum (Roma) tomato, seeded and diced • 2 green onions, thinly sliced Directions: Heat gas or charcoal grill. Coat chicken in oil and barbecue seasoning. Place chicken on grill

over medium heat. Cover grill; cook 5 minutes. Turn chicken; cook 4 to 7 minutes longer or until juice of chicken is clear when center of thickest part is cut (165°F). Transfer to cutting board; Steph cool 5 to 10 minutes or Nordstrom until cool enough to handle. Dice chicken. Meanwhile, to make dressing, in large bowl, mix pickle juice, Worcestershire sauce and sugar until sugar dissolves. Beat in mayonnaise and garlic with whisk. Arrange romaine on serving platter. Top with chicken, bacon, cheese, pickles, tomato and green onions. Serve salad with dressing. If you prefer to take something sweet consider this one! Strawberry Pretzel Yogurt Salad Cups Everyone’s favorite summertime salad is now an easy-to-eat, easy-to-share side dish. With a pretzel crust, creamy yogurt center and sweet strawberry topping, this one’s perfect for parties! Ingredients • 1 jar (10 oz) strawberry jam • 2 cups sliced strawberries • 2 cups crushed pretzels • 1 stick butter, melted • 1 cup sugar or honey, divided • 3 cups vanilla yogurt • 1 container (8 oz) whipped topping • 1 tablespoon vanilla bean paste • 8 mini pretzels

Directions: In a large microwave-safe jar, heat jam until melted, about 60-90 seconds. Stir in strawberries. Set aside. Place pretzels in a food processor, pulse until crushed. Add butter and half the sugar/honey. Spoon into the bottom of eight 9 oz. plastic party cups. In a large bowl or stand mixer, beat together yogurt, whipped topping, vanilla bean paste and sugar until smooth. Spoon on top of pretzel layer, reserving about 1/2 cup for the topping. Spoon prepared strawberry layer on top of each cup. Finish with a dollop of yogurt mixture. Garnish with a pretzel before serving. Serve chilled. Summer isn’t playing out exactly how we would like or expected, but there is still plenty of time and ways to enjoy it! Plan a picnic and make one of these great recipes!

Hiawatha River Cruises Back In Business By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

F

or almost 40 years, the Hiawatha Riverboat has been plying the local waters of the Susquehanna River from its home at Susquehanna State Park in the city’s west end. The pleasure cruises of this fine craft were in doubt for a while this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Still, Hiawatha officials from River Valley Transit are proud to report that the Hiawatha is back in business as of this last weekend. Their way of doing things, of course, has been changed because of the new realities of COVID. The changes customers will likely notice each of the Cruises will include: The passenger capacity has been reduced, and tables will be assigned for event cruises. Due to COVID-19, the Hiawatha will operate much like any restaurant in Pennsylvania where tables will be 6 feet apart, and no more than groups of 4 people may be seated together. Facial coverings must be worn by passengers when boarding and departing cruises and when moving about the enclosed lower deck. Food and beverage service will only be offered by the waitstaff, and social distancing guidelines will be enforced. Hand sanitizing stations will be available, and high touch areas will be cleaned frequently.

“Overall, there will not be much of a difference than any other site you visit this summer, and we are making sure everyone is safe; our primary focus is on our visitors.” said Todd Wright. Cruises on the Hiawatha Paddlewheel Riverboat resumed on Friday, July 3, 2020. The daytime cruises will operate twice daily Wednesday through Friday at 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m., and weekend cruises times will be 1 p.m., 2:30 p.m., and 4 p.m. Special Event Cruises include Wing Night, Dinner Cruise, Craft Beer, and Wine Cruises and Concert Cruises. There will also be a Floating Classroom series during July, August, and September. Upcoming Concert Cruises will feature Leo & Kg with Family Tradition on July 11th, Campfire Bacon on July 27th, and

summer, don’t discount black denim, especially if you find a pair on sale. A straight-fit or skinny dark jean will make a white tee pop. It’s also a great basic to pair with a brightly colored V-necks in shades like tomato red, magenta, or a citrusy yellow. A black-nwhite striped tee looks very sharp with black jeans and pairs well with sneakers, flats, and heels. Again, be sure to keep your accessories are sophisticated. Tips to Keep Your Children Safe this Summer By Abigail Vanaskie, CRNP Pediatrics, UPMC

A

s the temperatures climb and the sun is shining, outdoor activities are excellent ways to get the physical activity and health benefits needed for a healthy life. Whether it’s swimming, hiking, biking, or just going to the playground, your children want to be on the move as the weather warms up. As they get more active outdoors, they are likely to fall,

slip, and stumble. There are important tips parents can follow to keep your children safe as they enjoy the outdoors. You don’t want an unexpected trip to the Emergency Department to ruin a beautiful sunny day. You Get Out What You Put In No matter what activity you do outside, it is important to consider hydration and nutrition for warm weather safety. Hydration: Remind your children to drink water throughout the day because heat-related illness can be very serious

and even life-threatening. Before, during, and after any physical activity, kids need to drink plenty of water, especially in hot weather. Try to avoid caffeinated beverages and sugary drinks. The goal is to drink a half cup to two cups of water every 15 to 20 minutes while exercising. Help them to understand why hydrating is important, especially when it’s warm out and they’re sweating, and that thirst is one of the first signs of dehydration – so don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Nutrition: Play is a healthy way for your child to burn off their energy and get moving, but that energy is limited by what your child eats and drinks. A healthy and balanced diet plays a role in

preventing dehydration as well as helps keep your child’s sugar levels in check. Avoid sugary foods and processed snacks in favor of fruits and vegetables which provide your child with healthy energy in the form of natural sugars such as glucose and fructose. Also, try to avoid too many salty snacks. While salt and electrolytes play a role in helping your child stay hydrated, high-salt diets not only increase thirst and can lead to dehydration, they also can increase blood pressure, even in children. Talk to your child’s pediatrician or primary care provider about any dietary concerns you may have. They can offer recommendations as well as refer you to a nutritionist or other expert if

A tick tornado or tick twister can also make for easy tick removal. When riding a bike, skateboard, rollerblades, or any other type of recreational vehicle, wear a helmet. Helmets are an important part of keeping your kids safe. For example, a properly fitted helmet can reduce the risk of head injury when riding a bicycle by 45%. Wear a lifejacket and learn to swim. Water safety is very important when you are around open bodies of water, whether it is the pool, beach, lake, a neighborhood pond, and even a baby pool. Drowning is the leading cause of injury-related death for children ages

necessary. Dress for Success Equally important as what goes into our children’s bodies is what we put on them. When heading outdoors: Make sure your kids are wearing lightcolored, lightweight clothing which allows for evaporation of sweat. Wear a proper repellent for ticks and other insects and make sure you do a thorough check of your child’s entire body when they come in from playing outdoors, especially their hair. If the tick is removed within 24 hours, the risk of Lyme disease is extremely low. Remove a tick with a sterilized pair of tweezers being sure to remove the entire tick.

one to four. Always supervise children in and around water, teach your child to swim, and instruct them on water safety measures such as how to properly wear a lifejacket and the dangers of diving in shallow water. Wear proper footwear. While sandals allow your child’s feet to breath, they can slip off the foot and cause a fall. Consider sandals with straps as well as toe and heel cover for protection. When heading to the water, try to avoid bare feet in streams, rivers, and natural bodies of water as sharp rocks and objects may be hidden beneath the surface. Sun Smart Just a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life. Adults and children need protection from ultraviolet (UV) rays whenever they’re outdoors. To avoid overexposure and other sun-related injuries: Seek shade when necessary. UV rays are strongest and most harmful during midday, so it’s best to plan indoor activities then. If this is not possible, plan shade breaks and seek shade under a tree, an umbrella, or a pop-up tent. When possible, cover up with longsleeved shirts and long pants and skirts to provide protection from UV rays. Be mindful of overheating and use lightweight clothing. Wear a hat that shades the face, scalp,

ears, and neck. If your child chooses a baseball cap, be sure to protect exposed areas with sunscreen. Wear sunglasses. Sunglasses protect a child’s eyes from UV rays, which can cause damage and may lead to cataracts later in life. Use a mineral sunscreen such as Blue Lizard or Ceravae with the main ingredient titanium dioxide or zinc oxide and at least SPF 15 every time your child goes outside, even on cloudy days. For the best protection, apply sunscreen generously thirty minutes before going outdoors and remember to reapply as recommended on the label. Don’t forget to protect ears, noses, lips, and the tops of feet. Planning and Prevention Go a Long Way It is important to get your children outside and moving during the warmer weather. A little planning, preparation, and caution will keep the spring and summer seasons not only enjoyable for your children, but for you as well. Williamsport Historically Important to Fitness Industry

E

very person that has ever seen the inside of a weight room, fitness center, or garage gym knows what an EZ curl bar is. They have been used since the 1940s as a way to alleviate wrist and elbow pain, yet still allowing for the kind of muscular arm development that makes Hercules envious. But did you know that it was invented right here in Williamsport? In 1948 an engineer by the name of Lewis George Dymeck applied for a patent for

the Dymeck Curling Bar. A Williamsport resident and engineer by trade, Lewis was an avid weight trainer but didn’t like the way straight bar curls bothered his wrists when training his biceps. So, like any good engineer, he began tinkering. His idea would later revolutionize the fitness industry and would become one of the most recognizable pieces of fitness equipment in the world. The idea was to take a short, one-inch bar and place several bends in it to ease joint

strain while exercising. A simple, but ingenious, idea. In the early days of his invention, Dymek would manufacture the bar himself and package it in his kitchen, selling his bar through Iron Man Magazine. The ad read: Dave “This new curling bar Bellomo will give you the biggest arms you have ever dreamed of - quicker than any other system in the world! The scientific construction of this new curling bar provides such a natural

z n i B n w o t l l Bi

manner of gripping that it entirely eliminates all curling difficulties...This new bar makes curling so effective that you can use 20 to 30 pounds more than with a straight bar...Because the exercise value with this bar is so greatly improved it will unquestionably result in faster development and will add more bulk to the upper arm.” Dymek later moved to Albuquerque, New Mexico to work with Andy Jackson, of the Jackson Barbell Company. Eventually, in 1964, Dymek sold his patent rights to famed barbell icon, Bob Hoffman, of York Barbell and from then on it was known as the EZ curl bar. See the original patent application

straight bar bell. “It has been found that by providing the bar of the bar bell with a pair of tortuous portions in proper spaced relation intermediate its ends so as to form hand grips, a bar bell is produced which overcomes the disadvantages of the conventional straight bar bell. “Accordingly, an object of this invention is to provide a bar bell for exercising purposes which will permit the exercises to be done correctly without body movement or strain. “Another object of the invention is to provide a bar bell which is simple in construction, rugged in design and highly efficient in action.”

In these exercises, the instructions are always the same and recite that the exercise must be done with strength of arms alone, while keeping the elbows close to the user’s sides, without swinging the body. “However, very few persons can do such exercises correctly, since it is not natural or comfortable to do such exercise with a

The Classics

I

t was a night last week where we had a little rain. It was gloomy, and one of those nights that just felt cozy. I was making Chicken Carbonara for dinner, and garlic bread was baking in the oven. I was relaxed, and in my happy place. My kitchen. My daughter, Kenzy, walked out and said, “Momma, can I help you?” She had her little “Frozen” apron on and ready to cook! She helped put the chicken in flour, then I put it on the stove. She was such a cute little

sous chef. Frank Sinatra was playing in the background and Kenz began to set the table. As she placed each plate on the table she was singing with Frank. It melted me how she knew the words. She turned and said, “Momma, it feels like Christmas Andrea tonight.” With Frank singing and McElroy it being gloomy, I can see how she felt that. She continued to sing, and I couldn’t help but think how her great grandfather, Dwain Perry, would be

so proud in this moment. Back when I was younger, Pap would drive us around in his beautiful white Lincoln Town Car because all six of us could fit in it when we went places together as a family. I loved 97.7, pop music back in them days. (NOT anymore.) I’d ask pap to turn it to 97.7 because his music drove me nuts! He loved it. He would whistle along with Frank and tap his thumb on that brown steering wheel to the beat. I remember this like it was yesterday. “Why would you want to listen to that garbage when you can listen to the classics like Sinatra?” Pap would say. Years later, I bought him the whole Frank Sinatra CD box set for Christmas. I was so excited; it was a perfect idea! Little did I know that my pap would pass away before I could even give it to him. He passed away on Christmas morning in 2008. I was pregnant with my first born and devastated. It all happened too fast. I was in no way taking Pap’s gift back. I unwrapped it and popped in our CD player. I instantly cried. I could hear Pap whistling and just smiling away as he listened to dear old Frank. As I listened to the CD over and over, I began to fall in love with Frank. His voice, the music, the gentleness of his songs. I now knew what Pap was talking about. When I hear Sinatra, I think of my pap. I would give anything to ride around in that old

white Lincoln, listen to Frank and whistle along with pap as we would drive into the sunset. To tell him how I don’t listen to that “pop garbage” anymore and how his granddaughter and great granddaughter love the sound of those classics. I can see him smiling now. His smile lit up any room. A Simple Classic of Banana Cream Pie. Nothing to it, and so delicious! • 1 pack of Keebler’s mini graham cracker pie shells (Makes 6) • 1 box if instant french vanilla pudding • 1 1/2 cups of milk • 1 banana • Whipped topping Place small slices of bananas on the bottom of prepackaged pie shells. Prep pudding with the milk, mix well, and place on top of banana. Place in the fridge to chill for an hour. When ready to serve, top with whipped topping.

here is an axiom in journalism that says, “if it bleeds, it leads.” I complained about this to one of my English professors in college, and he rebutted that covering a plane crash is news, one that lands safely is not. But given the amount of turmoil over the past four to five months, I felt we all needed a break. As I was walking along Fourth Street in Williamsport on a beautiful Tuesday morning on the last day of June, preparing myself mentally for the

weekly Lycoming County Commissioners Public Meeting, I decided to only feature in my County Hall Corner article things that were positive. I could not help but smile and wonder if God had a sense of humor as I rounded the corner and approached the Executive Plaza. Standing outside the entrance were eight protestors from Roads to Freedom carrying banners, signs, and what appeared to be an American flag but with a very unusual star design (not sure what that was meant to represent). I knew why

they were there. Their request for funding had been denied at the meeting last week by a 2-1 vote, and now they obviously were going to make another appeal. As I entered the conference room, the group followed behind me and lined

up against the windows and positioned themselves to be able to be in the sight lines of the live stream camera. As I sat down at the long table in the back of the room, I saw Ed McCoy, Chief of the Adult Probation Office, sitting at the far end of the table. I was going to greet him after I had got my computer out, but as I was doing so I could not help but note that he was in a rather serious altercation with Commissioner Rick Mirabito. I could not help but overhear, and realized it was over the protestors. It appeared that McCoy had called for additional deputies for the meeting and Commissioner Mirabito took offense to that. I had missed the initial discussion, but however it started,

COUNTY HALL the volume and the temperature rose considerably very quickly. Commissioner Mirabito was still loudly arguing as he went to his seat at the front of the room, with McCoy likewise responding, but it subsided when Commissioners Scott Metzger and Tony Mussare entered to begin the meeting. However, as soon as the opening prayer and Pledge of Allegiance had been given, Commissioner Mirabito asked to make a comment before deliberations to bring to attention the dust up he had just had with Adult Probation Chief McCoy. When McCoy asked if he could make a rebuttal, he was denied by Chairman Metzger due to protocol. But Commissioner Mussare decided to make a comment, and noted that there is a heightened tension in our country and thus it is prudent to take precautions. Commissioner Metzger also decided to respond and added that this was not just theoretical as a Williamsport City Council meeting had recently been disrupted to the point where the Council had to declare a recess. Metzger warned that anyone seeking to disrupt their meeting was going to be ushered out. And all of this drama had happened in just ten minutes! I was deeply discouraged and was even wondering if I should just skip a week due to mental fatigue. But then, just when the meeting appeared to be

descending into a bad horror movie, a ray of sunshine broke through. The first order of business was a Proclamation to recognize June and July as Dairy Month and Ice Cream Month. Featured at this proclamation was Katelyn Taylor, the Lycoming County Dairy Maid Princess. Katelyn has been featured in my LION columns twice in the past year, and she richly deserves it. She came to the podium and noted that the dairy farmers need our support, and again reminded everyone to get their “three dairy products a day.” (A mantra that I have heard from her so often I cannot get it out of my brain, nor should I try). All three commissioners made very kind remarks to Katelyn noting her hard work in championing the cause of local dairy farms and then presented her with the proclamation. As much as I could have liked to focus on just the positive, that is not the world we live in. There is a lot of uncertainty right now, and it is not easy for those who are leading us through this quandary. However, this is where we are as a country and this is where we are in our county — we have trials and triumphs, challenges and celebrations, problems and possibilities. Remembering our recent Independence Day, we recognize that we have come a long way as a country, and yet also realize that we have a long way to go.

Put Your Best Home Facial Face Forward

F

acials can bring about the best in your skin and help treat various conditions. Few things beat the pampering of a professional facial spa treatment — a luxury that many men and women afford themselves when possible. However, lately people have had to look elsewhere for popular beauty services. Data from the Simmons National Consumer Survey for the cosmetic and personal care industry revealed roughly three million Americans received facials four times or more in 2019. Many aestheticians recommend facials every month. Canadian Living reports that facial

treatments across the country can range from $40 to more than $200. Though they’re wildly popular, facials have fallen victim to social distancing guidelines that shuttered many salons. While not a carbon copy of the in-depth treatments offered at spas, at-home facials can bridge the gap until spas reopen. Understand the facial process Professional facials typically feature a series of steps. These include cleansing, exfoliation, steaming, extraction, specialized spot treatment, toning, and moisturizing. Aestheticians use products they endorse or those required by the spa. But you can use any products on hand to

of skin. Chances are you already have a toner, cleanser and moisturizer in your bathroom cabinet that can be utilized. If you want to invest in any specialized tools, aestheticians like Kerry Benjamin from the Los Angeles-based StackedSkincare recommend micro-needling, which is achieved with a dermaroller. This device causes tiny injuries to the skin to increase collagen production and help thicken the skin. A dermaroller can help with issues like dark circles under the eyes and fill in lines. Spot-test all products and be gentle when handling skin. In addition, remember to follow up any facial treatment with good skincare at other times, which includes wearing sunscreen at all times to protect against UV rays.

Just because a particular moisturizer worked on your sister who has dry skin doesn’t mean it would work the same way on your skin. Consider allergies as well. If you tend to break out when sipping orange juice, a citrus-based toner may not be your best bet. Gather your tools You likely have all you need at home to give yourself a good facial. Williamsport Sun July 9, 1934 Highway Crews Improve Parts of 29 Streets Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

P

ortions of 29 city streets, representing 10 miles of secondary roadway and located principally in East End or in Newberry, have been improved with crushed stone surfaces so far this

summer by the municipal highway department. Twenty of the streets are in the East End, the 15th and 16th Wards, where work in former years was restarted because of a lack of storm sewers. Five are in Newberry and four in the northcentral part of the city.

Councilman George W. German, director of highways, explained today that improved street services must follow sewers. It is not profitable or economical, he pointed out, to put down an improved surface on streets that must be subsequently torn up for the installation for storm or sanitary sewers. Highway crews have been marching steadily over Williamsport secondary road system with a trail of crushed stone that has already improved the most heavily traveled dirt streets. They have finished their work so

far this year on various sections of highways in the city. Some of the sections improved include Sheridan Street, from Penn to Grove, Grove Street from Sheridan to Meade, Florence Street, from Grampian to Lundy’s Drive, the back farm road from Grampian to the city line, East Seventh Street from Market to Franklin, Hollywood Circle from First to Fifth Avenue and Vernon Avenue to Campbell from Vallamont Drive. Aubrey Place, from Seventh Avenue to Rose Street, Trenton Avenue, from Poplar to the Keystone Glue Company.

The Roving Sportsman… “Chicken of the Sea” By Jon Pries

F

rom as early as I can remember, my Mom would often serve the family tuna salad, and frequently tuna noodle casserole. They were not expensive meals to prepare, nor were they too time consuming to make. Until recently, I have continued to enjoy both of these meals using tuna fish as the main ingredient – but, that all changed last week. Last week, a neighbor invited me to join him and his son on two ocean fishing trips – one just offshore for sea bass and flounder on Monday and the second trip on the following Friday would be way off shore for yellowfin tuna. I had fished for both sea bass and tuna on trips over the past few years and enjoyed them, so I eagerly accepted the invitation. Both trips would launch out of Margate City, New Jersey with the same Captain, Steve Bent on his boat named “Free Spirit.” We would leave before daybreak and return in late afternoon, thus avoiding the need to stop at a restaurant or store, and further avoiding any unnecessary contacts with other people in the midst of the covid-19 pandemic. For the sea bass trip, we departed the dock at 7:00 a.m. and motored out for two hours until we reached an artificial reef, were we bottom fished around the structure for 4 hours. We were joined by another father and son combination and each fisherman caught 15 to 20 sea bass. The possession limit per

fisherman was 20 sea bass, but the problem was that they had to be longer than 12 ½ inches to keep, and only 8 of all of the ones we caught exceeded the size limit. Only one of the fishermen caught any flounder and he caught 2, but only brought one into the boat and it was a dandy, measuring 19 ½ inches. All in all, it was a fun trip, we all caught fish, but it was a bit disappointing that we each only ended up with enough fish for one good meal. But, it was great weather, the salty old Captain was entertaining and did put us on the fish and it turned out to be a memorable day of swapping fishing and hunting stories as we reeled in sea bass. It was our chance to check out the boat and the Captain, as we would be with them again of Friday for our tuna fishing trip. Friday was an early departure, as we pulled away from the dock at 3:00 a.m. for a 4 hour run that would take us out almost 25 miles and just short of the Baltimore Canyon. Other fishing boats continued out another hour until reaching the canyon, but our Captain had located yellowfin tuna the day before at our destination. Upon reaching our fishing spot, the Captain throttled back the engines and let the boat drift as he and the first mate began to set out 10 rods with lures and bait that rode on the surface at various distances behind the boat. It was at 8:30 that the first fish hit, and immediately the rest of the lines were reeled in to clear the area for the fight that ensued – but not before a second tuna struck one more of the baits! It

to our boat. Sometimes a pair would leap simultaneously, and often 3 would show off together. The trip was also highlighted by observing more than a dozen fin whales as they breached the surface, at times only 100 yards away. Various seagulls and a number of small birds nicknamed “tuna chicks” circled overhead. The dolphins, the whales and the many birds were great indicators that we were in a very good spot for fishing. The very next day, I had the pleasure of making sushi from the freshly caught tuna, and an appetizer called Ahi Poke, and later, a pan-seared tuna steak with hot wasabi sauce. It was unbelievably delicious and made me want to discard the cans of processed tuna that had been lining my pantry shelf!

was a double and the fight was on! The tuna would run, taking up to several hundred yards of line, then the fisherman would regain some of the line, only to have the reel sing again as the tuna plunged deeper. The fights lasted about 20 minutes until the fish were finally brought into the boat. On this trip there were a total of 4 fishermen, and up until quitting time of 1:00 p.m., we boated 5 really nice yellowfins, weighing from 45 to 60 pounds apiece. Three fish were lost before getting to the boat, and the Captain later said they were probably mako sharks since the lines were bitten clear through. We had trolled slowly the entire time we fished and had the pleasure of being accompanied by literally hundreds upon hundreds of playful dolphins that would leap time and time again as they swam next

’m sure it comes as no surprise that I enjoy bass fishing. Like a lot of other dedicated bass fishermen, I too have my fair share of assorted rods, reels, and lures that I regularly employ on my bass outings. Many serious bass fishermen use different outfits and lures to address the many different situations and scenarios that they may face on any given outing.

Open-faced spinning outfits work well when “finesse” fishing with lighter and smaller soft plastics such as when fishing a “wacky-worm” or a small tube and jig, but there are times when something a bit heftier is more suitable — enter the casting outfit. BaitKen casting rigs, as they are often Hunter called, are usually rigged with heavier line and are better at handling certain lures, especially when

flyrod. Like a lot of other bass fishing lures, there’s generally a pretty good selection of surface type lures made just for the fly rod. Generally speaking, these lures are smaller and lighter than those being cast by heavier spinning and casting outfits. They are often made of cork or some other floating, lightweight material, including deer hair, which is hollow and floats fairly well. My fishing friend, Doug Zahner, builds his own poppers, and he has racked up some pretty good days on smallmouths on the river. On occasion, I too will pitch poppers in the river or other streams when in pursuit of

smallmouths, but I have no problem using the same technique when fishing from my boat on a lake or when standing on the bank of a friend’s pond. Surface poppers can imitate a number of critters that bass feed on including grasshoppers, large winged insects that have fallen into the water, frogs, mice, lizards, salamanders, and maybe even snakes. Probably the most commonly used surface popper is a frog imitation or a mouse imitation. Colors can vary from white, green, orange, brown, and a variety of other colors and a multitude of patterns. The good old green frog pattern is pretty reliable, but that being said, I have had some great action with

a white popper ribbed with black while fishing smallmouths in the river. Most of us usually think of fishing poppers in quiet water with little or no surface disturbance, and that works well. Still, you might be surprised how well a surface popper can perform even in some current in rivers and streams, especially later in the season when smallmouths have moved into these areas. I’m not about to give up my spinning and bait casting for bass, but I think it’s time to add the flyrod and poppers to my arsenal, especially now that the water has warmed, and surface activity should be increasing.

working weeds or openings in lily pads. That being said, there is another type of equipment that I also enjoy using from time to time when pursuing both smallmouths and largemouths, and that is a flyrod and surface poppers of some type. This type of fishing, sometimes referred to as bass bugging usually employs a heavier fly rod than used for trout with 7, 8, or 9 weight fly line and a leader heavy enough to engage some hefty bass that may even be in weedy cover. I’m sure I’ve said this before, but one of the greatest thrills of fishing is taking a fish on a surface lure of some type, and that’s especially true when working a surface popper with a

City League Celebrates 100th Year

M

ost everyone is familiar with the legacy of Carl Stotz and his dream. What began in 1939 as a place for his nephews to play organized baseball turned in to what is now Little League Baseball, the world’s largest youth program. But even in its 81st year, Little League is not the elder in the family of Lycoming County diamond sports. That honor belongs to the City Fast Pitch Softball League, which is quietly playing its 100th season this summer. Personally, the City League provided many years of good fun, fellowship and competition as during the 1970s and 80s. I

played first base for the McGrady’s Irish Inn managed by longtime softball enthusiast John Beauge. Beauge and the City League have been synonymous since 1967 when he became the league’s president following a merger with the Independent County League. He has continued in that capacity ever since. Over the years, interest and participation in fastpitch softball has greatly diminished. Following the merger in 1967, the league boasted 14 teams. As the league began its COVID-delayed 2020 season in mid-June, five teams are competing; Beverage Barn, Moon Ballers, Heshbon Ducks, Professional

MURRAY

Petroleum, and Bower’s Lab. While there once were many fastpitch teams operating in the area, only the City League and the Jersey Shore League are still in existence. This year’s season began on June 15 with games being played at Tate Field Monday thru Scott Friday, beginning at 6:30 Lowery p.m. Doubleheaders are played each night. There is no admission charge. The business landscape has greatly changed over the years, and it has become increasingly more difficult to find team

sponsors to help defray the cost of the league’s operation. During the earlier years of Beauge’s involvement, every team was in full uniform. That is not the case anymore. The cost alone of trying to find sponsors to fully uniform teams is over $1,000 a year. Reflecting back on his years of involvement, Beauge lamented a lack of volunteers to get involved to do the many things needed to keep an amateur sport operating. “I gave up managing a few years ago but am still involved doing a lot of the paperwork and organization with ASA. Taylor Tate deserves a tremendous amount of credit for the work he puts into the league. Everyone calls him ‘Squeak’ and he personally takes care of the field and makes sure things are in readiness for game nights. The league would

was winning Feigner was not at all pleased. Then came the portion of the game where ‘the comedy routine’ took over. The City League team ‘cooperated,’ and the game became a different story. Feigner was a fabulous pitcher who could throw up to 100 mph. He also featured pitches from behind his back, through his legs, from second base and blindfolded. He amassed over 10,000 victories, which included 1,000 no-hitters. I stepped in the batter’s box one time against him and, like so many others, struck out. That dubious feat put me in some very select company. Feigner did the same to such baseball greats as Willie Mays, Willie McCovey, Brooks Robinson, Harmen Killebrew, and Roberto Clemente. It used to be that a lot of players coming out of high school baseball would play fastpitch. Then the interest shifted to slow pitch, which featured more home runs and fewer strikeouts. But today even the number of slow pitch teams is decreasing. Now the emphasis of softball locally is more on girls. That shift in emphasis has been emphatically evident locally during the past several weekends. As many as 92 fastpitch girls’ teams have been competing in tournaments at fields throughout the county, paying entry fees of $550 a team each week to do so. Meanwhile, without much fanfare, the City League’s five teams are playing the game in celebration of its 100th year. We wish them well, including the one team that will be their representative in this summer’s ASA state tournament to be held in Lancaster.

be lost without him.” When asked about the game’s differences during his many years of involvement, Beauge quickly identified the pitching. “In fastpitch softball, the quality of pitching has decreased tremendously. We now have throwers rather than pitchers. Pitchers like Woody Scott, Dan Brink, George Hessert, and others just aren’t around anymore. They knew how to pitch. They could throw drops, curves, rise balls in addition to having speed. It used to be most of the games were low scoring, today that is not the case.” In addition to serving as the league’s president, Beauge managed teams for many years. He remembers fondly the weekend tournament his teams played in across the state and especially enjoyed those played in Danville. “The competition was good, but you got to meet so many people who shared a love of softball, and that made it a whole lot of fun.” One of the memorable highlights City League players will recall was a game played against the famed Eddie Feigner and his King and His Court barnstorming team. The team consisted of four players, a pitcher, catcher, shortstop and first baseman. They traveled the country playing games against local teams, and similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, they were rarely beaten. A team of City League All-Stars playing at Bowman Field accomplished that rare feat one summer evening. The exhibition game featured two segments. Several innings were played as ‘a regular softball game’ during which time the City League

from our kayaks and fishing throughout. The weather was ideal, and I slept all three nights in my tent. Some of my personal highlights were a 6-mile float with Teach and landing a 25” walleye just in front. The girls enjoyed themselves too. They took this opportunity to rest and do what families do. Chelle and Diane read books and watched their boys from the deck. They played SKIP-BO and told stories from the fire. It was an awesome getaway, and we are already making plans. There is no need to travel when everything you need is only a half-hour drive. No. I didn’t fish for trout as the water was rather warm. The purists actually ask us anglers to refrain. Bugs were everywhere, but whenever temperatures get to 80 degrees, there is an alarming concern. I get it. Most folks don’t. Please lend a hand and target other species during this time. My old friend Tom from Slate Run Tackle says hello. We caught up one evening, and he gave me lots of info. “We’re asking anglers to voluntarily refrain from targeting trout, especially at the mouths of the cold-water tributaries. We’re also advising against fishing the runs as water temperatures in both Slate and Cedar have reached lethal levels there as well. Anglers can enjoy some top-quality smallmouth bass fishing in The Stretch and almost anywhere on Pine Creek. Clouser patterns, woolly buggers, and top-water terrestrials are all good choices that we have in the Shop. Give us a call 570.753.8551.” The Spencers did lots of kayaking, and the water was just right. There are several access points along Pine. Do some research before you head up. Take a good look at the weather and view those gauges. The upper

stretch from ANSONIA to BLACKWELL is better in the spring. But the lower portions like WATERVILLE to BONNELL FLATS are ideal. We didn’t do any biking, but I can’t tell you how impressed I am with the PINE CREEK RAIL. This 62-mile gravel roadway that travels the entire Pine Creek Gorge is amazing. It is gently graded and is totally perfect for all generations. From 1883 to 1988, this was the same route we used to transport coal and timber. Now this trail leads you on a mountainous adventure from outside of WELLSBORO to JERSEY SHORE. I often take things for granted. I am OK with eating crow. I would also like to apologize to my lovely bride and her parents. Our Pine Creek vacation was exactly what I needed. Some of you might question the reasoning. I only slept in my tent as I wanted to get the full experience. Stay safe, kids. Happy Trails. Don’t forget about Pine Creek. Cheers.
