am normally pretty active on social media. But I’ve got to tell y’all, I’m beginning to reach my limit. I’m not sure there are enough ‘unfollow’ buttons to keep up with social media these days. Wear a mask, don’t wear a mask, social distance, protest, facts, opinions, false equivalency, virtue signaling, the spreading of out and out false information…the din of it all has gotten to be a lot to handle. Left, right, young, old, black, white, straight, gay everyone has suddenly managed to become a political science expert while also maintaining their medical degrees. It would be impressive if it weren’t so dang obnoxious! I have always considered myself to be pretty tech savvy, and usually ahead of the game as far as tech/social media/the interwebz are concerned, but, dude, I need a break. We ALL need a break! I think this is at least part of the reason that I have been apt to trying to spend more time outside this summer. I spent last Sunday with my boyfriend and his family out at Bald Eagle State Park. We picnicked, we swam, we relaxed, and we hauled butt out just in time to beat the storm. When we got home, we had a pretty typical Italian Sunday dinner with homemade pasta and sauce and Steve even made meatballs since I am generally terrible at those. Then we chilled out for the evening and watched a movie and I’m fairly sure we were all out cold by 9:30 p.m. But for most of the day, we weren’t on our phones, we weren’t watching the volley of

arguments of keyboard warriors trying to prove who has the bigger, who is better, or more right about whatever Facebook has decided we should be arguing about this time. Steph I’m not saying that we Nordstrom shouldn’t do our best to stay informed, and to learn about science and politics and life in general, but there has to be a limit to the constant bombardment of ‘information’ that we are consistently exposing ourselves to. Maybe you could ask someone to have a [socially distanced] cup of coffee and sit down and have a real conversation with someone about what you think or believe and why. Maybe you’ll find that you don’t, in fact, have all the answers and you’ll actually learn something if you don’t have constant access to your personal confirmation bias open in the next tab. Or, maybe we all just need to put down our phones and go for a nice long walk and decompress and disconnect for a while. I promise, the keyboard warriors will wait. At the very least, if you’re passionate about a cause, or a subject, stop arguing with idiots on the internet about it. You know what George Carlin had to say about that anyway, “Never argue with an idiot. They will only bring you down to their level and beat you with experience.”

On to something important… I want to make y’all aware of an event that is coming up on July 29th. “ClearView Asset Protection will be holding an exposition on the integration of the latest technology to support existing security and law enforcement. ClearView Asset Protection, along with our partners, will be presenting the latest technology that enhances law-enforcement and security.” I know, you would like that in English please… ClearView Asset protection will be holding an Active Shoot Demonstration at Loyalsock Township High School. The program will begin at 9:30 a.m. with each program participant explaining their product or technology. At 11 a.m. the demonstration will show modern technology integrated with law enforcement. This will include mobile platforms with weapon detection threat systems, integrated with the Loyalsock School District weapons detection system, specialized mapping for the school, helmet cameras for real time observation and new non-lethal weapons used to replace the Tasers. The Active Shooter demonstration will show how all these technologies/systems integrated together will provide immediate threat notification allowing a much quicker response for threat mitigation. Time saves lives. New technology integrated properly with Law Enforcement will save money and lives. I wanted to pass this info along to y’all so if you see something happening near Loyalsock High School next week, you know not to worry! Now, go enjoy something that doesn’t need a battery, cord, or internet connection!

n his inaugural address, John F. Kennedy said, “God’s work must truly be our own.” One Montoursville woman and at least six volunteers that include her two daughters, take this directive seriously. Together for the past ten years, they have been bringing the concept of physical fitness, wellness, and increased self-esteem to individuals with diverse abilities and special needs in a program they call the “SuperStars.” Diana Logan is a Group Fitness Instructor for the East Lycoming “Y” of the River Valley Regional YMCA. She recounted the story of how the “SuperStars” program came about. “It was a little over ten years ago when the BLaST Intermediate Unit 17 invited me to come in and do a music and movement class for their extended school year for those in special education, Logan told Webb Weekly. “I had so much fun with those students! On the way home, I thought, why isn’t there something in our area for these individuals? I knew there was a need as my daughter Amber also had a diverse ability, and I knew the struggles of making friends and staying active. I came back to the Y and asked if I could start a class at our Eastern Lycoming YMCA, where I was an instructor, and they loved the idea. They also suggested that there would be no cost to

the parents as this would be a great outreach into the community.” She was asked why she started the program, and she said, “I guess first and foremost I saw the need for making friends and for a fitness program that would be geared towards those with diverse abilities. Also, I had a goal of trying to increase their confidence and improving their quality of life.” Logan said her role in the “SuperStars” program is to help them get excited about moving and engaging in Drums Alive, which is what is used to get them moving to music. “When I started the class, we had about six individuals each week. It wasn’t until I got certified in drums alive and started to incorporate that in the workout that the class exploded!” Logan said. “Each individual has a stability ball in a huge bucket and a pair of drumsticks. We put on their favorite songs and drum to the music. We are now 45 plus individuals on Saturday mornings at the ELYCA. Both of my daughters, Amber, who has a diverse ability, and Erica, a special education teacher, got certified and now help me co-teach. Both Amber and Erica were instrumental in supporting me ten years ago when we started. We now also have six volunteers that come each Saturday to help encourage and be extra hands when needed.” She continued, “We could not do this

“SuperStars” has already made a wider impact. In April 2018, they were invited by Rep. Garth Everett, who was very supportive of their efforts, to the Capitol in Harrisburg to drum in the Rotunda. More than 40 individuals went that day. Their goal was to create awareness, and they did just that. Officials from the River Valley Regional YMCA are very pleased about the SuperStars program. “The vision of the YMCA is to strengthen our community by addressing service area needs through our areas of impact, which are Youth Development, Healthy Living, and Social Responsibility. Our SuperStars Program meets all three of these needs,” Mandy Minella, Marketing Coordinator for the RVR YMCA, said. ”Many of the program participants are children who we are teaching to be active and healthy. This program is offered for free to help not only the participants but their families as well. It gives them a place to be and something to do together. Like everything else, COVID-19 had its impact on the SuperStars program. The group had to stop the classes in March. According to Logan, this was hard on the individuals, and they were missing class, so she and her daughter, Amber and started driving to their houses and doing dance parties in their yards and driveways. She said this was so much fun and also was an affirmation to her how much this class means to them and to her and Amber. They started a summer “SuperStars” session at the Williamsport Y on July 11th at 11:1011:45 a.m. For more information, call the EL YMCA 570-546-8822.

program without them. We are a team that works well together. The individuals love our volunteers and often want to give them a high five or a hug. They know that they truly care.” In 2017 Diana and her daughters flew to Rhode Island to see the creator of Drums Alive, Carrie Ekkins came in from Germany, and they were able to train with her for three days. That, too, was an amazing experience. It was there that both Amber and Erica got certified in Drums Alive. Logan said her goal for the program is to see it grow and expand. They have also offered Superstars at the Williamsport YMCA during the week and are seeing great things with those SuperStars too. “We are excited to see where this goes. How often do you hear about group fitness classes for these individuals? I tell them all the time that they are paving the way for others, and they should be excited about that,’ Logan said. “Another goal is to reach out to the parents. Each Saturday, many of the parents sit and catch up with each other and, of course, share stories as to what is going on in their lives. Who better to know than someone else that is going through the same journey. As I know in my own life, having a daughter with a diverse ability, the many challenges that we face day to day many others are facing too. It helps to talk about it.” She added, “I guess another aspect I like to express is that everyone just be themselves and have fun. That has surely been a blessing to watch as each individual in the class drums to the music and each in their own unique way come alive during this time together.”

We Understand That Losing A Loved One Is Difficult

T

he absorbing topic yesterday was the draft which was being made in Washington yesterday afternoon and which found its reflection in the city in the long list of numbers that were posted over the press wires and were posted on the bulletin board as they were received. It was a serious day and its seriousness was reflected in the faces on the men on the streets, particularly those with sons who were on the registry list, many of whom remembered the days of the Civil War and what war means. Gathered around the bulletin board of the Gazette and Bulletin office during most of the day was an anxious crowd who studied the

lists and remarked as this man and that man’s name appeared. Now and then a man would see his own name appear and would slip away with the knowledge that he had been drawn and just what number had drawn him. Inside the newspaper offices the scene was a busy one. As a long list of figures came from the telegraph wires it was passed to a force of clerks who translated the columns of figures into columns of names for the public to read. This was carried on all day long and up to the hour of going to press this morning. The entire list of numbers is drawn at one drawing in order that all may know the order which they stand and there was much speculation in the crowd as to where the dividing line between the first and second call would fall.

This Week’s LION SOLD OUT Caretakers of theWilliamsportCemetery EVERYWHERE!!!

T

here are cemeteries in our country that are genuinely moving to visit. Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia is the location of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier as well as the burial place of President John F. Kennedy. Gettysburg Cemetery has a spot where Abraham Lincoln delivered the greatest speech in American history, known as the Gettysburg Address. We also have a cemetery in our own backyard that is also quite historic in its own way, but unfortunately has been greatly neglected over the years. It is the Williamsport Cemetery located on the corner of East Fourth and Penn streets in Williamsport. For quite some time, the cemetery almost looked like it was abandoned. The grass had grown three to four feet high, the graves were unattended, and many of the headstones were so weathered that it was impossible to read them. Then, about eight years ago, a man by the name of Bill Welter, who was a member of the Ivy 106 Masonic Lodge in Williamsport, became so annoyed that the graves of fellow Masons were treated so shamefully, he decided to do something about it. He lived very close

by, so on his own, he began to go to the cemetery on Saturdays and attempted to see what he could to improve the grounds. It was a daunting task. The cemetery covers some eight acres, but Bill kept plugging away, month after month, year after year, and slowly improvements began to be noticed. After almost five years of playing Hans Solo (emphasis on Solo), another Lodge member, Dale Brendle, decided to step up and help Bill. Now, Dale would probably not appreciate being called Chewbacca (especially since he is shorter and a bit rounder than Bill), the truth is that the two were passionately committed to this project and worked quite well together as a team. The two men have willingly donated a couple of Saturdays and

Joseph Biles Anthony, who was born in Philadelphia in 1795 and grew up to study law at Princeton College. He was admitted to the bar in 1817 and opened up a law practice in Williamsport. Joseph Anthony would eventually serve in the Pennsylvania State Senate from 1830 to 1833 and followed this up with two terms as a United States Congressman from Pennsylvania’s 16th District. He died in 1851 and is buried at the Williamsport Cemetery. A man named William F. Packer studied law under Joseph Biles Anthony but decided that journalism was a better career field. In 1829 he purchased the Lycoming Gazette and took the role of editor. While there, he became a major supporter for constructing the West Branch of the Pennsylvania Canal. Packer realized he could have more influence by serving in government, so he subsequently got elected to the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1847, State Senate in 1851, and then he became the 18th Governor of Pennsylvania from 1858-1861. He also is buried at the Williamsport Cemetery. This is why the work of these caretakers should be saluted. Check out the pics and stories on the Williamsport Cemetery Facebook page. Send them a message if you have an interest in helping out. And take a walk through the cemetery, because it is a walk through history.

occasional Sundays every single month for the past four years to help preserve this historical landmark. And sure enough, their efforts began to get noticed by others. The Boy Scouts donated new emblems for the graves of veterans, and one young man working for his Eagle Scout has a project for a flagpole. The Girl Scouts, as well, endeavored a project of digitizing each of the headstones to assist those who wish to find specific individuals. Others have come and put flowers on graves and, in general, just showing more respect to this old cemetery. And it is certainly worthy of respect. Here lie the remains of some of the most important individuals in the history of this area. It all started with Michael Ross, the founder of Williamsport. Ross had immigrated from Scotland in 1772 and originally lived in Philadelphia. He progressed from being an indentured servant to eventually becoming a successful surveyor and farmer. Ross was able to use his profits to purchase 285 acres of land along the West Branch of the Susquehanna River in what is now Williamsport. It was here where he first allowed burials on the eastern corner of his farm, which is the present location of the Williamsport Cemetery. Ross himself is buried there. Over the years, a number of dignitaries were buried there. These included

combination of task force members who work both within the church and out in the community. Health ministers are often healthcare professionals such as health educators, wellness professionals, or social service professionals who receive training in dealing with health issues with a spiritual component. Faith community nurses have actively licensed registered nurses who also receive additional education on dealing with spiritual matters and can receive a certification through the American Nurse Association. Some of the responsibilities of a faith community nurse may be health counseling, health education, referrals, or working with a health ministry team that might also include a health minister or other wellness professional. A congregational health and wellness ministry includes a combination of health ministry task force members, and is likely the most formal type of health ministry. Often existing in larger cities, this type of group usually addresses not only the health needs of the congregation but also those of the community. Team members may work for social justice, religious education, and youth ministries, while also providing for the physical needs of those they serve by performing things such as regular blood pressure checks and offering formal health education classes. Health ministry teams such as this often

play significant roles in the community and may meet regularly with community leaders to discuss current wellness issues. Health is often defined as a physical condition, but if one is to live an abundant life, the definition needs to be expanded to include not only the physical aspect but also psychological, social, and spiritual aspects as well. These pillars of one’s health combine to form a complete person, and all must be addressed if a person is to become the best version of themselves. It has been shown that when a church community develops a health ministry that is considered essential, church members are often more likely to volunteer in hospitals, care facilities, or visit homebound people. In addition, communities with strong health ministries receive more health education and are better able to make informed health decisions. Those communities are also more likely to engage in behavior that is consistent with a healthy lifestyle such as regular exercise, good nutrition, and preventative screenings. Last, and possibly most important, health ministries can assist in the spiritual healing of those they serve by counseling those in crisis or just providing a shoulder to lean on when another is in pain. he James V. Brown Library is joining others libraries around the globe in encouraging patrons to read a historical fiction thriller e-book and audiobook during Big Library Read, the world’s largest digital book club. From August 3-17, readers can borrow and read Tim Mason’s “intellectually stimulating and viscerally exciting” The Darwin Affair from their public library. Brown Library readers can solve the mystery from home – with a valid library card and no waiting – by visiting https://ebranch2go.overdrive.com/ or downloading the Libby app. Readers

can then discuss online at https://discuss. biglibraryread.com/. “The Darwin Affair” takes place in London during June 1860. When an assassination attempt is made on Queen Victoria, and a petty thief is gruesomely murdered moments later, Detective Inspector Charles Field quickly surmises that these crimes are connected to an even more sinister plot. Soon, Field’s investigation exposes a shocking conspiracy in which the publication of Charles Darwin’s controversial On the Origin of Species sets off a string of murders, arson, kidnapping, and the pursuit of a

madman named the Chorister. As he edges closer to the Chorister, Field uncovers dark secrets that were meant to remain forever hidden. Tim Mason has created a rousing page-turner that both Charles Dickens and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle would relish and envy. The Brown Library is part of a national “Libraries Transform” effort to increase awareness of the changing role of libraries and the ways in which libraries are transforming to meet the information needs of their users. The James V. Brown Library is open for browsing and holds pick up from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday; and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. To place a hold, visit www. jvbrown.edu or call 570-326-0536 during the library’s operating hours. The library

also is open for public computer usage and for services such as printing, faxing, copying and scanning. Passport services are not available at this time. The James V. Brown Library, 19 E. Fourth St., Williamsport, Pa., is the place to go to learn, connect and grow. Founded in June 1907, the library champions the love of reading, opens new doors to lifelong learning, provides a haven to those who seek and ensures the preservation of public library services for future generations. The library has more than 225,000 visitors in a year and circulates a half-million items annually. A member of the Lycoming County Library System, the James V. Brown Library participates in PA Forward, a statewide initiative to promote literacies in our communities to power a better future for everyone.

Tiffany and Molly are a mother/daughter pair. They are very attached and are looking for a home together. Tiffany is ten years old and Molly is nine. They were abandoned by their owner in March outside of their apartment and were brought to the SPCA by the landlord. They have weathered the change as they have every other thing in life...together. Could you give these sweet girls the home they long for?

Andrea’s Home Cookin…

Gratitude

T

he love and support shown to my Andrea’s Country Home Cookin column mean so much to me. You have sent me fan mail, messaged me on Facebook, or have seen me in person and have told me how much you enjoy reading my column. Last week, especially, got amazing feedback. The one about my grandfather and Sinatra, you all seemed to really enjoy. I’ve

heard from many of you that you love that I talk about my family. My stories feel cozy and that you look forward to coming home and reading each week. Thank you for reaching out to me to tell me this. I got a lot of really sweet feedback last week, and the fact that you take the time to tell me makes me do what I love so much more! I try to write my column pertaining to food, and some weeks it may not

always be, but I have so much of my life to share with you. I try to be creative with each column I write. Andrea’s Country Home Cookin has opened so many doors Andrea for me, and I am so McElroy thankful to be able to reach so many of you with delicious recipes to enjoy with your family. My cookbook is still being sold at Rust And Shine in Williamsport on Cemetery Street. They have some of the cutest things in there! From antiques to primitives, homemade items, jewelry, and more. I am thankful to be able to sell my cookbook at such a neat place that offers so much. Thanks, Rust and Shine! For extras, you can also find me at Andrea’s Country Home Cookin on Pinterest, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, or my website, www. andreascountryhomecookin.com. Instagram really shows you extra goodies in my kitchen and pictures

of my cute sous chefs who help me. YouTube is my home cooking videos; however, we haven’t made a new one here in a while because of the time. (Where does that go anyway?) It’s a lot to keep everything up and running, but I try to post and share as much as I can while having a family. On the Pulse will be starting back up with my cooking show for August. The Rona put a stop on our filming for a while, so I am excited to get back it!

OK, and now I just have to throw this in here. My momma just called me, and she had no idea I was even writing my column and said, “Honey I have to tell you how many people have said to me this week how much they enjoy reading your column.” “Mom, I literally just got done writing my column, and that is exactly what it was about!” Hearing this gives me so much joy.

County Hall Corner Some Simple Civility By Larry Stout

A

fter the past Lycoming County Commissioner Meetings in July, I was tempted to ask Jim Webb Jr. for hazardous duty pay. The temperature of the meeting room has certainly been steadily rising, and not just due to the weather. Since we now live in a time that forgets how to practice simple civility, I wish to offer this tutorial. Meeting opening — Commissioner Metzger opens the meeting by asking Divine Providence for help in dealing with county issues and problems. His prayers are sincere, and to be honest, this is often the best thing that happens in the meeting. The Pledge of Allegiance to the flag follows the prayer. It is a tradition that goes back to the 19th century that only contains 31 words and takes just twelve seconds to recite. Show at least a minimum of respect, especially since many Americans gave their life defending that flag. Opening Public comments — Under the Pennsylvania Sunshine Law, public comments must be permitted before any official business is conducted. The law does state, however, that this can be limited in time. The Lycoming County

Commissioners have determined that it should be limited to three minutes for each presenter. Besides these modest time restraints, please keep in mind also when making comments that raising the volume does not improve the music. Recognitions — These are not held every meeting, but when they do occur, they are extremely important to those who are being honored and to their fellow colleagues. These infrequent moments of recognition are vital to employee morale and have an atmosphere of celebration when they happen. It is not uncommon for all the chairs to be occupied by county employees who are there to enjoy and celebrate their colleague(s) being honored. The commissioners almost always adjust the agenda so that these ceremonies occur right after the public

impolite, ill-mannered, discourteous, and just plain rude. Spare these men the distractions and let them do their jobs. For those who like theatrics, please patronize the Community Arts Center or the Community Theater League. Closing public comments — The county commissioners have their own comments time and then close the meeting by allowing the public to address whatever issue they choose — two simple points of etiquette to remember. First, the commissioners should be addressed by their titles. The same is true with a judge, or a sheriff, or a state official. It is called respect for the office, even if you don’t respect the person holding

that office. Second, it does not score points to accuse anyone of deception, mismanagement, incompetence, etc. An argument should be sound enough to stand on its own merits, so simply state the problem from your perspective and leave the disparities and innuendos at home. It is easy to be critical sitting comfortably on the sidelines, but it is brutal slogging through the trenches. Ulysses S. Grant wrote arguably the best memoirs of any president, gaining astounding insights as he grew up through the ranks of the military and eventually becoming the 18th president of the United States. One example of this was while serving as a

young officer during the Mexican War. He was critical of a strategy devised by his superior General Zachary Taylor, who himself would later become the 12th president of the United States. He wrote, “My later experience has taught me two lessons: first, that things are seen plainer after the events have occurred; second, that the most confident critics are generally those who know the least about the matter criticized.” So, remember to add a little humility with your civility. And also, remember that the word “civility” means formal politeness and courtesy in behavior or speech. It characterizes “civilization.” The absence of civilization is anarchy. FYI.

comments. For those of us who do not know the one being recognized, please be patient for the few precious minutes that these events require. It might seem annoying to be standing in the back, but the seats will open up shortly as the employees go back to their jobs when the ceremony is over. Instead of mumbling complaints, listen to the accolades and realize that some very special folks work for Lycoming County. Meeting deliberations — The commissioners have to conduct official business, and much of it is rather tedious. They do not need an audience response of vocal guffaws and snide side comments. Not so long ago, this would be considered

Robert C. Grier Williamsport’s U.S. Supreme Court Justice By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

he 2019-2020 term of the United States Supreme Court has been one of the most controversial and memorable in the history of the Court. These developments shine the light of the public’s interest on the Supreme Court, but almost no one knows that there was once a Lycoming County resident on the nation’s highest tribunal — Robert C. Grier. Many distinguished attorneys have called Lycoming County home over the past 200 or so years, but perhaps none has been so distinguished as Grier, who served as a U. S. Supreme Court Justice from 1846 to 1870. He was born in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, on March 5, 1784. His father, Isaac, was a Presbyterian minister, and it was in that capacity that he brought his newly born son Robert to Lycoming County. Isaac, in addition to preaching to several Presbyterian congregations in the soon-to-be-formed Lycoming County, also taught school and also cultivated a farm. The farm stood in

the area of what is now the southwest corner of Memorial Avenue and Grier Street. Robert was carefully grounded in a classical education by his father, before entering, at the age of 17, Dickinson College in Carlisle. He graduated with high honors in 1812 and took a job as a tutor. After a year, he accepted a job at a newly established academy in Northumberland, started by his father. He assisted his father there, and when his father died in 1815, he succeeded him as principal of the school. Shortly thereafter, Grier took up his study of the law and, in 1817, was admitted to the bar, practicing in the Bloomsburg-Danville area, as well as some cases in Williamsport. While in Williamsport, he met his wife, the former Isabella Rose, her father, John Rose, was a wealthy landowner and a man of some influence. Later, both Isabella and Rose streets would be named for her and her father. After developing a thriving practice, the governor appointed him President Judge of Allegheny County. As an active member of the Democratic Party, he caught the eye of President

Grier voted on such other historic cases as Luther vs. Borden, Ex parte Milligan, and Cooley vs. Board of Wardens. When Chief Justice Taney died in 1864, it was said that Abraham Lincoln briefly considered Grier as Taney’s replacement. Still, Grier’s vote on the Dred Scott case made that politically untenable. During the late 1860s, Grier’s health and his mind started to fail. It was said that he stayed beyond his ability to function. A committee of court colleagues came to him in early 1870, urging him to step down. He finally did and died several months later on September 27, 1870, in Philadelphia.

James K. Polk, who appreciated Grier’s talent as a jurist, so much that he appointed him to the U.S. Supreme Court in 1846. It was the time of the highly charged issue of slavery, and while on the High Court, Grier participated in one of the most controversial court cases in American history, the Dred Scott case. Grier was the only northern Supreme Court Justice to vote to have Scott returned to his master. Grier was greatly influenced by the arguments of Chief Justice Roger Taney, who said that a ruling freeing Scott would help to precipitate civil war. In addition to the Dred Scott case,

mailbox to retrieve my copy of the Weekly. Usually, I’m pretty excited to read the articles — and especially my own. That may sound cocky, but let me assure you, it is an incredible privilege to be included in the Weekly and to enjoy faith conversations with people all across our beautiful valley. I am usually very humbled by the opportunity, but on this day, I was just plain miserable. Instead of going back in the house, I went to the front porch and sat down on a bench. I didn’t want to be around anyone when I read my mess. I paged through the Weekly and a miracle happened — my article wasn’t there!

I paged through it again just to make sure I hadn’t missed it. It still wasn’t there. I let out a howl of celebration that probably had my neighbors DJ and Jerel and Bob and Big Mike wondering what on earth was going on. I ran into the house and announced the great news to Miss Heather: Her husband wouldn’t be tarred and feathered and placed in the stocks at the corner of Market and Third! Sometimes, things just work out. The next day I submitted a corrected version of the article to Steph and thanked her for being part of a little miracle Hartzell needed. Her response, “There’s something to be said for

Divine Intervention.” Amen, sister! That revised article appeared last week in the July 15 edition. And now you know the rest of the story. When you read this article, Heather and I will be walking the beach in Ocean City, Maryland, the very same beach we walked together 35 years ago on our honeymoon. It has been the greatest privilege of my life to walk with her through these many years. I am a thankful man and blessed beyond measure. Editor Steph was right, there’s something to be said for Divine Intervention — and I know that better than anyone. Happy anniversary, Heather. Come, walk with me. PA #121099

gnawed on me all day long. I’m not a perfectionist, but I take the Word of God very seriously and I messed up. At one point, I was trying to cope with the failure and I said to my dear Miss Heather, “Well, out of 58,000 homes, it’s likely that only fifty people will actually read my article. And of those fifty, only ten will be focused enough to catch my mistake. And of those ten, only three will take the time to let me know about my mistake.” (You know who you are.) Seriously, at that point, I was thinking anything just to feel better about my blunder. But D-Day came. On Wednesday after work, I walked out to my

your face. After years of resisting my mother’s advice, I finally gave in and started using a cold cream to remove makeup. Pond’s fragrance-free cold cream effectively removes makeup, while also being gentle on your skin. After makeup removal, use an exfoliant to wash off the stresses of the day. I’m a big fan of showering at night, so I use St. Ives Fresh Skin Face Scrub in the shower with an exfoliating brush for a deep clean. Of course, if you are no longer in the practice of wearing a full face of makeup during the day, you may not need (or want) to power wash your face every night. Too much exfoliating may lead to irritation and dry skin. So, if you have sensitive skin, instead of a nightly

grainy scrub, consider a gentle face and body product like Drunk Elephant’s Kamili Cream Body Cleanser. You can use this from head to toe, well not so much head, more like face to foot, this is not for your hair. An all-in-one product is great for an evening shower. Regardless of when you shower, your nightly skincare regime should include a face wash and a body lotion. Washing your face and moisturizing your skin can add a calming effect to your bedtime routine. In addition to washing your face in the evening, you may also consider applying nighttime treatments. Whether you suffer from acne, want to brighten your skin, or fights signs of aging, there are overnight products like Olay’s Night

of Olay Firming Cream or Cetaphil’s Face Rich Hydrating Night Cream that are meant to take effect as you sleep. Since sleep is already an important part of skincare, why not double down with an overnight cream or mask? Society is going through some major changes, and a shift in beauty norms will probably be just one of many results. All of these disruptions of daily life may prompt women to turn toward a lower maintenance look even after things return to “normal.” Whether you are maintaining your pre-pandemic beauty routine or looking for ways to take better care of your skin as you’re stuck at home, keep in mind these three key points: Sleep, clean, and sunscreen.

The Roving Sportsman… “Vicki the Vulture” By Jon Pries

P

erhaps Forrest Gump said it best when he stated that “Life is like a box of chocolates — you never know just what you’ll get!” At least, that is what came to mind when I first saw “Vicki.” Over the years, I have often seen turkey vultures coursing overhead a cabin on the hill behind my home, and have once or twice seen them perched in the trees near the cabin. But I never expected to see what greeted me just last week. I arrived at the cabin mid afternoon one sunny day and my eyes were immediately drawn to a puffy white ball the size of a soccer ball as it appeared several feet behind the cabin. Was it a soccer ball or a deflated balloon or perhaps a feral cat? It was too fuzzy and stark white to be a giant puffball mushroom. And then it moved! I moved slowly toward the object and suddenly realized that it was a fledgling baby vulture! It was weird and awkward looking as it held its wings out and held its head low to the ground and slowly walked under the back of the cabin. Its body was covered with bright white downy feathers, and its black eyes and beak, along with its black legs and feet presented an amazing sight. It hissed defiantly as it slowly disappeared under the cabin and returned to the safety of its lair. I have returned numerous days since that first encounter, partly to do some work on

the cabin and also to see how the little cabin mascot was doing. If I view the fledgling from a distance, it is content to stand in the sun a few yards away from the rear of the cabin, but if I close the distance, it slowly retreats to the protection of the space under the elevated cabin. At last sighting, as it holds it wings out to absorb the suns warming rays, small black pin feathers are beginning to appear along the back of its wings. But it still is awkward and gangly in appearance; while usually most of natures young are oh so cute looking! Now that I have unofficially adopted “Vicki the Vulture” as the cabin mascot — well, at least until she grows big enough to fly away on her own — I did a bit of research that yielded some interesting facts. The turkey vulture (Cathartes aura), also known as turkey buzzard or just plain buzzard, is found throughout Pennsylvania and is classified as a protected non-game bird within the state. Since their range is actually from southern Canada to the southernmost tip of South America, it is also protected federally via the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918. A group of vultures is called a committee, venue, or volt. In flight, a flock of vultures is a kettle, and when the birds are feeding together at a carcass, the group is called a wake. The turkey vulture is a scavenger and feeds almost exclusively on carrion. It finds its food using its keen eyesight and sense of smell, flying low enough to detect the gasses

had done so. Interestingly, the droppings produced by turkey vultures can harm or kill trees and other vegetation. If you are concerned about the presence of turkey vultures, the greatest deterrent is the strategic placement of hawk or owl decoys nearby, since they are the vulture’s greatest threat. “Vicki” appears to be about 2 months of age, since she has begun fledging her new feathers and losing her soft white coat of down. She remains safe in her surroundings as the unofficial cabin mascot in its remote location on a quiet hilltop. She represents one of those rare encounters that can only happen when you spend time in the woods. You simply never know what amazing sights await you when you venture into the wilderness!

produced by the beginning process of decay in dead animals. It nests in caves, hollow trees or thickets, which explains why “Vicki” was reared under the cabin. Each year, a buzzard will produce one or two chicks, which are fed by regurgitation. Both adults feed the chicks and care for them for the first 10 to 11 weeks. The chicks fledge at about 9 to 10 weeks. Fledgling and immature vultures can fall prey to great horned owls, red-tailed hawks and eagles, while the eggs and nestlings may be preyed upon by raccoons and opossums. Its primary defense is regurgitating semidigested meat, a rather foul-smelling mess, which deters most adversaries. Turkey vultures do not kill live animals, but when a group of the birds are feeding on a carcass, it may give the false impression that they

Another advantage to the casting rig is after you’ve learned to cast, you can actually place your lure more accurately right where you want it-say right next to a stump; this is accomplished by controlling the line with your thumb as it leaves the revolving spool. It’s also true that the stiffer action casting rods are better for working certain lures creating a more desirable action. I’m a great believer in versatility when it comes to fishing; the more equipment you know how to use the more likely you are to connect with your quarry, and casting gear offers some distinct advantages over spinning gear, but you can bet I’ll have some of both fishing outfits rigged and ready to go.

and more robust construction makes fishing weed cover and surface cover a more successful endeavor. For example, a casting reel spooled with 20-30 pound mono or braided line with a weedless soft plastic frog can be cast right on top of thick lily pads and easily jerked or pulled through the pads into an opening where a strike is likely; the heavy outfit makes it more likely to work the fish out of the pads for a successful landing. Even when working deeper weed structure, a Texas-rigged lure or a Carolina-rigged lure can be worked more effectively through the weeds, and more power can be exerted on the hook set, sinking the hooks deeper and hopefully preventing a lost fish.

community, to keep them safe. Chilson: If we have fall sports, I expect them to start on time. In my opinion, I think it will be an all or nothing decision that is made by the governor, the PIAA, or individual school districts. Recently, we have seen a few college sports conferences shut downfall sports in this manner. WW: How are you preparing for the potential of no fans in the stands? McCann: Unfortunately, that is a possibility at this point, having our sports played this fall without spectators in the stands. I think most people would accept that, knowing that the students will be able to have their games and events. We are hoping for at least limited spectators, with stands at 50% capacity. Our facilities at Williamsport would allow that to happen and allow parents and family to see the

games and events if we can do that. We have already had discussions with our Instructional Technology (IT) department about livestreaming our events. We have done that at our football stadium, gym and pool already this past year, so the system is already in place if we need to go in that direction, to provide that service to our parents and school community. Chilson: We will live stream events where fans are excluded from watching in person. I am hopeful that our competitors would do the same. Tallman: With the current and constant changes going on daily with COVID-19, we are staying focused on the day-to-day plans we have in place. We will follow whatever plans are set forth when we reach that stage of play here in August. Meanwhile, UPMC has developed some

guidelines to help sports organizations return to play. “We started as a team developing a plan,” explained Jeanne Doperak, a primary care physician at UPMC Sports Medicine. “We were able to come up with what we feel like are some inclusive guidelines to help the community take the next step to get back to sports. “The youth playbook is meant for youth sports, travel teams, community rec leagues, and even has sections on tournaments, competition and practice, which obviously at the youth level looks a lot different than high school. So, we’ve written a specific set of guidelines for high school and collegiate athletes, which each step of the way looks a little different.” For more information on the Return to Sports Playbook, visit UPMC.com(https://www.upmc. com/services/sports-medicine)

McCann: As of the moment, we are planning on the scheduled starting dates for the sports, August 10th, for football and August 17th for the other fall sports. The PIAA has stated they plan to start the fall sports season as scheduled, so that is what we are preparing for at this time. hen fighting cancer, physical therapy may not be the first health care service that comes to mind. Successful cancer treatment involves a health care team approach, including oncologists, radiologists, nurses, surgeons, social workers, and as you transition to survivorship, physical and occupational therapists. More people are surviving cancer than ever before, thanks to early detection and advancements in cancer treatment. While this is great news, cancer treatment can be hard on the body. Rehabilitation is key to improving a survivor’s quality of life, promoting optimal function, and diminishing the side effects of cancer treatment. Effects of Cancer Treatment Cancer treatment is a grueling course, leaving many people exhausted, weak, and with a compromised immune system. Despite advances in medical treatments, individuals that receive cancer treatments typically experience extensive physical limitations during and after treatments. Treatment side effects can include pain, fatigue, damage to the heart and lungs, nerve damage, weight gain or

loss, cognitive changes, mood changes including anxiety and depression, bone loss, muscle loss, scarring, and lymph congestion. Sadly, rehabilitation is often overlooked as part of cancer treatment. In one 2013 study in ACS Journals, 90% of patients with cancer were identified as requiring rehabilitation services yet only 5-20% had been referred. When integrated in a patient’s treatment plan, physical, occupational, speech, and mental health therapists all play a role in preventing cancer treatment side effects, managing changes throughout treatment, and restoring a person to maximum functional levels when treatment is complete. Physical Activity in Cancer Treatment Returning to physical activity following cancer treatment can be challenging, however, it is a powerful tool in a survivor’s treatment. Affecting nearly all body systems, physical activity helps build bone and muscle, reduce fatigue, manage weight, and reduce depression and anxiety. Exercise also can assist with pain management, improve mobility of scars, and improve lymph flow. A report of the 2018 American College of Sports Medicine International Multidisciplinary Roundtable on Physical Activity and Cancer Prevention and Control concluded that exercise training and testing are generally safe for cancer

It Starts with a Conversation When undergoing treatment, physical activity is probably one of the last things on your mind, but because of the benefits it’s important to have a conversation concerning your activity level with your provider. Your provider, along with a physical therapist, can help you develop an activity plan designed to your needs and abilities. They can prescribe the best type, intensity, and frequency of activity to help your return to an active lifestyle as a survivor. Shari Berthold, DPT, is a physical therapist with Pain Management and Rehabilitation Services at UPMC Williamsport. For more information, visit UPMCSusquehanna.org/ Rehab.

survivors and that every survivor should maintain some level of physical activity. The roundtable also found strong evidence that moderate-intensity aerobic training and/or resistance exercise during and after cancer treatment can reduce anxiety, depressive symptoms, and fatigue and improve health-related quality of life and physical function and some evidence that exercise is beneficial for bone health and sleep quality. Studies show that only 30% of cancer survivors meet the national exercise guidelines of 150 minutes per week of moderate cardiovascular exercise. This lack of exercise is attributed to other health risks including heart disease, obesity, diabetes, and osteoporosis.
