efore I get started this week, let’s all stand to honor America with the playing of our National Anthem. If you have a problem with this, please don’t read any further. I don’t understand how this could have ever become controversial. The playing of our National Anthem is a celebration of freedom and a time to honor the sacrifice of all that have served our Country. Past, present, and those preparing for the future. Many made the ultimate sacrifice to secure and maintain our liberty. The United States Military has been, and always will be comprised of individuals representing different ancestries, races, religions, and genders. While we stand for the National Anthem, we pay our respect to the Flag of the United States of America. Which should always occur any time the Flag passes in front of you. American citizens should stand and put their right hand over their heart. Those that have served or are serving our Nation should stand at attention and salute. We pay tribute to the American Flag in honor of our great Nation and the freedom we are so very blessed with. We pay tribute to the American Flag again for the United States military, especially those that paid with their future. We pay tribute to the American Flag to celebrate “Unity.” We pay tribute to the American Flag because it represents justice, not injustice, and our great Nation’s ability

to always be moving forward toward Justice for All. We pay tribute to the American Flag to set an example for our children and future generations. Hopefully, we teach them the history that is represented by the Stars and Stripes. There is a star and always has been for every state that makes up our United States. A nation comprised from the very beginning of people from every possible walk of life on God’s green Earth. The playing of our National Anthem and the honoring of our American Flag is a time for the unification of all Americans. It is not a time for protest or putting one’s individual beliefs ahead of what every stitch in that Flag represents. It’s a time to give thanks, reflect, and think about the freedom we are all so very blessed with each and every day. This includes one’s constitutional rights. We have one National Anthem, the StarSpangled Banner, which represents all Americans. We have one Flag of the United States of America. It has changed as our Nation changed. Every American needs to know the history represented by the Flag. Whether it is right, wrong, or indifferent. Old Glory has seen every battle, whether it’s here at home over civil rights, after 9/11, or around the world representing the United States Armed Forces. Our Nation must always remember, learn from, understand, and celebrate American history that is in the name of good. We cannot allow the destruction of what made our Nation who we are today. By doing so,

you lose the perspective of how we got here, making our Country more vulnerable to repeat mistakes from the past. You cannot rewrite or delete history, although many are trying. One thing’s for sure; our educational structure is doing a very poor job of teaching American history to young Americans. Historical hindsight can always be viewed through 20-20 glasses by those who want to divide or criticize America. What was normal, good, bad, or even ugly 200 years ago must be understood, not only with the historical perspective of that time, but also with what was occurring around the world and led up to that time period. You cannot hold a statue, a flag, or the beliefs of our forefathers accountable for their actions today, any more than you can bring them back from the dead to be put on trial. You cannot hold American citizens of today accountable for the sins of the past. This idea that America should have been a completely utopian society from its founding and is possible at any time or reality is completely absurd. It is beyond hypocritical that Americans elected to uphold everyone’s constitutional rights are allowing domestic terrorism, rioting, looting, arson, murder, and rape in the name of any interpretation of history or racism. How will this change anything for the betterment of the United States of America today? How are these so-called leaders going to be remembered? How will history view this current attack on our Nation from within? You cannot legislate morality, ethics, or one’s conscience. There will always be racism. There are racists from every race, religion, and culture. The percentage from each is

probably the same. People are either working for good or evil. Most alarming to me, is the hypocrisy of taking away one’s freedom of speech through the accusation of racism. That if you’re silent and don’t advocate 100% for the beliefs of any cause, this makes you racist and part of the problem. As I stated in the past, I will stand with any person who feels their constitutional rights have been infringed upon, have been discriminated against or worse, for whatever reason. I do this in confidence and provide the right help if your situation is justified. The important thing at this most difficult time in American History is to stand together United and not divided by deception, the self-serving, and those jealous who wish our Nation ill will or worse. More Guns and Roses Thank you to Mr. Adam Kordes and his great staff of instructors at National Range and Armory. They have gone above and beyond to provide the best training available in our latest empowering women through the 2nd amendment effort. It has been great to hear all positive feedback from so many. I am amazed out of the 110 that have received training that 23 have been 65 years young or older! So, here you go. If you missed your shot the first go round, we’re teaming up to train another 100 ladies on the safe handling and use of a firearm. The same offer applies. I will cover half the cost of your class; if you’ve hit 65, it’s my dime and your time. Call National Range and Armory at 570601-4101 on or go to their Facebook page to get registered. God Bless America.

Revisiting Macarons

I

love macarons. Next to red velvet cake, they are probably my favorite dessert. I don’t have a huge sweet tooth, but I LOVE macarons. Now, if you haven’t attempted to make these, you should know, they are not easy. So much can go wrong so easily, and it can sometimes be hard to pinpoint what exactly didn’t go to plan. I usually bat around .500 when I attempt to make them. I usually attempt a few batches, get frustrated and give up for a while, before attempting them again. I’ve been feeling the itch again, so I’ve been searching for more recipes again. This is the newest recipe that I am going to try, so we’ll see how it goes. Here is my biggest insider tip though: WEIGH, don’t measure. Trust me; it makes a huge difference. Ingredients: – 65 grams – almond flour – 65 grams – powdered sugar – 45 grams – castor sugar (aka extra fine granulated sugar) – 50 grams – AGED egg whites (app. 2 medium egg whites)* – 1/8 teaspoon cream of tartar or 1 teaspoon of lemon juice – GEL Color of your choice (DO NOT use liquid color) What you will need: – electronic scale – 2 very clean and dry mixing bowls absolutely free of oil or water – preferably NOT plastic. I usually wipe my bowls down with a little white vinegar to make sure they are clean. – a hand or stand mixer

– a sifter – a flexible spatula – a piping bag – a round piping tip – a good quality baking pan – template with macaron outline Steph – oven thermometer Nordstrom – parchment paper or Silpat mat – DO NOT use wax paper – dehumidifier or make in a dry environment with low humidity Directions: In a medium bowl, beat the egg whites until frothy. Keep beating and slowly add the sugar until stiff peaks form. Add the gel color just before you get to stiff peaks. Sift the powdered sugar and almond flour over the egg whites. Fold the dry mixture into the egg whites, giving the bowl a quarter turn every third fold. Mix until the batter reaches a lava-like consistency. Do not over mix! Working quickly, put the batter into a piping bag. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. (Tip: use a little batter to “glue” down the edges of the parchment paper so it stays put). In a circular motion, pipe 1½-inch dollops onto the baking sheet. Lift the baking sheet and gently tap on the counter to settle the batter. Let the cookies rest for 1 hour, until they are no longer wet to the touch and a skin forms on top. Preheat the oven to 285ºF.

When the cookies are dry to the touch, bake for 13-15 minutes, until they have risen. Let them cool for 10 minutes. To fill, pipe a circle of whatever filling you would like in the middle. Sandwich with another cookie. Macarons are best kept refrigerated until serving. * Aging egg whites for macarons is an important step. Separate the eggs, place the whites in a clean glass, cover with plastic wrap with a few holes poked in and let them hang out in the fridge for a few days before using. This will dehydrate them and make them perfect for macarons. This step isn’t a must do but a bunch of little things can add up to a big difference when making these cookies. Cream Cheese Filling: – 300 grams (~5 1/2 ounces) cream cheese room temperature – 150 grams (~5 tablespoons) unsalted butter room temperature – 250 grams (~2 cups) powdered sugar – 2 teaspoons vanilla extract – 1 tablespoon milk In a medium bowl, beat cream cheese on low speed until smooth. Dice the butter and add to the cream cheese. Increase speed to medium and continue to beat until smooth and creamy. Beat in the powdered sugar and vanilla extract. If too thick, slowly drizzle in milk until pipe-able. Transfer the cream cheese filling into a bag pipe onto cooled cookies. Again, I’m not going to lie; this isn’t an easy recipe, but totally worth the results. After you give this a shot, you’ll realize why these tasty little cookies tend to be on the more expensive end!

City Police K9 Program in Full Swing By Dave Bellomo

ue to generous donations, the largest of which was $43,000 made by Greg Ciocca on behalf of Ciocca Toyota dealerships, the first K9 unit in many years has been working the streets of Williamsport. The generous donation enabled the Williamsport Bureau of Police (WBP) to send Police Officer Tyson Minier and his fourlegged partner, Tacoma, to training school and get the program off the ground earlier this year. Tacoma, named after the Toyota brand truck, and his handler, Police Officer Tyson Minier, will be working primarily in the City of Williamsport. However, the team will also be assisting other police departments in the region. Tacoma is a dual-purpose, patrol, and drug dog. “This is the first of three K-9 teams that will eventually make-up our K9 Unit,” said WBP Chief Damon Hagan. The second K9 team, consisting of Sgt. Brian McGee and dual-purpose police dog, Niko, is expected to hit Williamsport’s streets later this year. Like Tacoma, Niko will work as a patrol and drug dog. “The presence

of trained K9 units has been proven to have a dramatic and positive effect on combating street crime and an immediate impact on public safety.” Chief Hagan went on to say that K9 units save lives, and simply the arrival of a K9 unit on a scene often prevents crime. K9 units are used to apprehend criminals during burglaries and on other police calls. In addition, many police dogs have specialized training that allows them to detect the presence of drugs such as fentanyl. This enables officers to get such drugs off of the street, thus saving lives. A third K9 team is expected to be in place in the near future and will be led by handler Officer Zachary Geary. This third team would also have a dualpurpose dog and, along with patrol skills, would be specially trained as an explosives dog. This skill set would include detecting explosive devices, gunshot residue, spent shells, and locating firearms, among other things. According to Chief Hagan, such a team would prove to be extremely useful in cases such as bomb threats at schools and government buildings, and events such as the Little League World Series. “Having these K9 units means that we do not have to wait

game-changer.” According to Chief Hagan, these initiatives would not have been possible without the efforts of a dedicated group of people. The idea of reviving the K9 program began when Constable Peter DiBartolomeo approached Councilwoman Bonnie Katz. Councilwoman Katz then approached Chief Hagan. Through ad hoc meetings and other discussions, plans were set in motion. Officials decided early on that funding for the program would be made through private donations. The Young Men’s Republican Club jumpstarted funding for the second K9 team with a donation of $15,000. “None of this would have been possible without the support of the City Council, the Mayor, Ciocca Dealerships, the Young Men’s Republican Club, and many others,” said Chief Hagan. The breakdown of approximate costs includes $34,042.00 for the first team, $29,233.12 for the second team, and approximately $30,355 for the third team. The K9 Academy for drug dog teams includes a cost of $14,500 for the procurement of a dog and

for the training of the handler and dog. This also includes additional equipment, food, and housing of the officer during training. Other program costs include an expected $5000/year for maintenance training (8 hours every two weeks), $1,400 to build a kennel at each K9 officer’s home, $700 per year for dog food for each dog, $1,700 for a bite suit, $632/ year for standard veterinary bills (not including injuries), $450.00 for proper bite sleeves for training, $250 for an E Collar, and varying costs for other additional miscellaneous equipment. People or companies that are interested in donating to the police K9 program should go to the Williamsport Bureau of Police Facebook page for ways to help. On the Facebook page, people will find information about the program and a K9 Unit donation form that should be filled out and sent in with a check (please follow instructions on the form). Donors are encouraged to donate to the WBP Canine (K9) Unit. Gazette and Bulletin July 30, 1937 Over One Thousand Attracted by Baby Parade

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

O

ver one thousand persons witnessed the annual Baby Parade conducted last night as the feature of the second evening’s program for the Lycoming Presbyterian Church festival in Newberry. Gathered along the course of the parade, from Diamond Square to Arch Street on West Fourth Street then south to the church, the group witnessed a parade in which between 125 and 150 children participated. Following the feature, most of the audience adjourned to the church grounds for a concert by the Sunday School Orchestra under the direction of Walker Smith. store, a fishpond, a novelty booth, candy, refreshment, and home baked goods stands. Tonight, the ancient costume parade will be held. Those participating will form in Diamond Square at 6:30 o’clock with the parade scheduled to move at 7:00 o’clock. The orchestra will furnish music. Outstanding in last night’s award was the one for the most ingeniously decorated carriage. The prize was won by Becky Wendle, one-yearold participant, who was riding in a buggy trimmed with mountain ferns. She was seated in a bed of garden flowers. Jerry Lee Miller won for the prettiest carriage; Betty Louise Guinard, six months, for the most original costume. Robert Wagner and Shirley Lousie Buser won portraying a bride and groom.

County Hall Corner: The Court is Now in Session aving lived in the former Soviet Union for sixteen years provides me with an appreciation for many of the institutions we have in our country. For example, voting in the USSR was mandatory (you would be fined if you did not vote), but voting was essentially meaningless and everyone knew it because all the candidates on the ballot were members of the Communist Party and would follow the party line. The same was true of the judicial system. If charged with the crime, it would mean the offender was a disrupter of the state and therefore, in essence, guilty until proven innocent. The judge who would try the case would not be guided as much by law as the “unwritten” expectations that the government would be emphasizing at that particular time. I needed to remind my dear wife of this when she received a jury summons in the mail. She lamented the time it would take away from her schedule, and having been called twice before and never impaneled into a jury, she wondered if it was not just a waste of time. Being the loving husband that I

am, I gently reviewed for her the great blessing we have of being born in the United States of America which is governed by the greatest document of government ever devised, the United States Constitution. In Article Three of that Constitution, as well as the Sixth and Seventh Amendment, it gives any person accused of a crime punishable by incarceration for more than six months the right to a speedy and public trial by an impartial jury. So, just as Americans vote to elect their governing officials, so we have the civic responsibility to participate in the judicial system to ensure that justice is served according to our Constitution. But along comes a virus that results in shutting down many institutions,

SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY INSURANCE

Declare your independence with an Independent Insurance Agency STILL AVAILABLE

COUNTY HALL including the courts holding jury trials, and the issue of “speedy and public” becomes very difficult to insure. This is what the Lycoming County Courts are now dealing with. With a number of restrictions, the courts have been able to deal with non-jury cases for the most part, but the last jury trial was March 10th, just three days before Governor Wolf ’s shutdown order. Since that time, those charged with crimes and who could not afford bail have been awaiting their trials in county prison. A “speedy trial” is considered one within 365 days for those on bail and 180 days for those without bail and who are subsequently incarcerated. It means that there may be those who are innocent but who are sitting in prison waiting for their day in court. Yes, they could plead out or take their chance before a judge, but these individuals have a constitutional right to a jury trial of their peers. It also is trying on the victims of crimes who must prolong their wait to see justice done. Given all these concerns, the Lycoming County Courts have endeavored to begin impaneling juries beginning in August for cases to be held in September, and then again in October for cases to be heard in December. Adrianne Stahl, District Court Administrator

for the Lycoming Courts, wishes to insure all those summoned that every consideration for their health and safety has been taken. Everyone summoned has a packet of complete information, but here is the condensed version. Jurors are to call the telephone number on their summons after 5:30 PM, the night before they are scheduled to come. If anyone has any symptoms at all, they should ask to be excused. Better to be safe than sorry. Reporting the next day, jurors are not to bring in phones or any electronic devices, but are asked to bring their own snacks and drinks, as these will not be provided due to health reasons. Also, it is encouraged to bring a book or magazine to pass the time as these also will not be provided. Upon entering, everyone will have their temperature scanned and will be provided with a mask and face shield. This is to provide an added layer of protection. Adrianne also emphasized that the jury room and numbers of jurors will allow for proper social distancing, and there will be continual disinfecting and sanitation at each step of the jury selection process. Yes, there is some inconvenience by much of this, but it is a small price to pay for the privilege of serving on a jury. This is one of America’s gifts to the world. Some two hundred years ago

way of preparing people to be free. Juries teach men equity in practice. Each man, when judging his neighbor, thinks that he may be judged himself. Juries teach each individual not to shirk responsibility for his own acts, and without that manly characteristic no political virtue is possible.” Tocqueville gets to the heart of the matter. We are protecting each other as we answer the constitutional call to serve in judging our neighbor. If we were charged with a crime in which we were innocent, we certainly would want good people willing to objectively hear our case. So serve with pride, Lycoming County. It is good for everyone.

His observations resulted in a book entitled, Democracy in America, which many historians believe is the most insightful book on the United States ever written. Tocqueville was especially impressed with jury trials which were unknown in his native France or Europe for that matter. He remarks, “Juries, especially civil juries, instill some of the habits of the judicial mind into every citizen, and just those habits are the very best

SUMMER HAIR from Walmart. Or, go for the BOGO with a dry shampoo that is also a volumizer like Bumble and Bumble’s Pret-a-Powder dry shampoo from Sephora. Other styling products that can help provide volume while protecting your hair are mousses and foams. Walgreens has a Condition 3-in-1 Mousse with alcohol-free sunscreen to protect hair while providing moisture and volume. While Ulta Beauty has OUAI Air Dry Foam that works to enhance hair’s natural texture and is enriched with strengthening ingredients like carrot, lemon, and kale protein extracts. Whether you’re blow-drying or letting your hair air dry, apply a dollop of product at the roots, and work it through to your ends. As your hair dries, your locks will look and feel thicker. For curly hair, try spray-on/leave-in conditioners to detangle and restore natural curl. For my curly-headed 2-year-old, I’ve been using SoCozy Kids Curl Spray, and I’m not ashamed to admit I’ve used this on myself as well to condition and add some bounce to my wavy hair. Regardless of the products you use, to maintain your

hair this summer, it’s best to skip the flat iron. Pin straight hair is better suited for fall and winter to fight against frizz. Instead, use a curling iron from roots to tips and then work through with a round brush for a healthy full volume. During this season of sun, humidity, and swimming, your hair may be in need of a bit of repair, no matter the style. So, in addition to regular washing and conditioning, you should try a weekly mask to help bring it back to life. Look for a product that contains a higher concentration of moisturizing and hair-strengthening ingredients like Garnier Frutics’s smoothing 1-minute hair mask. Or check out Shea Moisture’s Manuka Honey & Yogurt treatment for extremely dry and brittle hair. Lastly, consider a daily vitamin and look at your diet. Your hair, like the rest of your body, is dependent on what you put into it as much as what you put on it. So, if you’re not already, start taking a daily vitamin or hairspecific vitamin like biotin. Also, getting enough iron, fiber, and protein into your system, whether through food or supplements, will help your hair, as well as your overall health.

How to Effectively Freeze Vegetables

T

o say that COVID-19 transformed daily life would be an understatement. Few, if any, aspects of life were untouched once the virus hit. One aspect of daily life that changed considerably is the way people shop for food. As recommendations to remain home and out of crowded places spread, many people felt that shopping in bulk, or at the very least, meal-planning and buying necessities for a few weeks at a time, would reduce the number of trips they needed to make to supermarkets or small food stores. In addition, due to shortages on popular foods, many

people have purchased items they did not necessarily need in anticipation that such foods may not be available in the coming weeks or months. Large packages of meat and poultry can be broken down and frozen easily. But what about the fresh produce that many people rely on for important nutrients? Fresh vegetables only last so long, so people need to learn how to safely freeze fresh vegetables to avoid throwing them out. To freeze vegetables properly so they retain their flavor and texture, it is important to freeze them within a few hours of picking them from a garden or taking them home. Certain vegetables can

be frozen in their raw state. The texture might change slightly upon thawing, but they will remain flavorful. Other vegetables may require blanching before freezing. Blanching requires scalding vegetables in boiling water or steam for a brief time. Blanching helps stop the enzymes that cause vegetables to decay, a process that can occur even in frozen storage. Items that do well with blanching include spinach, kale, winter squash, and broccoli, according to HGTV.com. Another way to freeze produce is to remove the air that can compromise the food. You can do so by filling containers or bags and pushing out the extra air. Vacuum sealers can work to remove the air and help preserve items in the freezer

longer; otherwise, use a tray pack method to freeze items. Place chilled and drained blanched vegetables in shallow trays or pans. Freeze them until the vegetables are firm and then quickly fill freezer bags or containers, says the National Center for Home Food Preservation. Remember to label and date containers so items can be used in the order in which they were packed. Most vegetables maintain high quality for eight to 12 months at 0 F or lower, according to the University of Georgia. Freezing fresh vegetables is an option when stocking up on essentials. Flavor and texture can be retained and items will not need to be discarded before they can be eaten.

wo weeks ago, America lost one of its true civil rights giants when Rep. John Lewis of Georgia died after a battle with pancreatic cancer. It was my pleasure and thrill to have met Rep. Lewis, if only briefly, in August of 1999. I was attending a Negro League Historical Conference in Atlantic City, which was a gathering of Negro League historians from across the country, and Congressman Lewis was also there in the same hotel attending a related event that honored John “Pop” Lloyd, considered by many baseball historians as the greatest shortstop in the history of the Negro Leagues. Lloyd was an Atlantic City resident who died in 1964. While waiting for one of my conference sessions to begin, I saw a group of people gather as a distinguishedlooking black man, wearing a blue suit came in. I immediately recognized him as John Lewis. In addition to being involved in Negro League’s history, I am also a student of the Civil Rights

Movement. I could hardly believe my luck that I was now in the presence of this great man that I so admired. After a short time, he sat down near me, and I hesitantly started talking to him. He immediately saw my nervousness and immediately disarmed me with a broad smile. I told him what a thrill it was for me to meet a man of his historical stature. He said he appreciated my admiration but said there are many more people whose names we will never hear, who made a great contribution to the “Movement” as well and that all he was a “humble foot soldier for justice.” I told him why I was there. He complimented me and the others who were attending my conference and his function for helping to preserve and remember the important history of the Negro Leagues and how it helped to sustain black hopes during the time of segregation. The son of Alabama sharecroppers, Lewis began his activist career early, while a student at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee. He helped to lead lunch counter sit-ins in a bid to

JOHN LEWIS desegregate those counters. In 1961, he was beaten and severely injured by angry mobs while participating as a “Freedom Rider,” in an attempt to integrate interstate bus travel in Montgomery, Alabama. As a leader of the Student NonViolent Coordinating Committee from 1963 to 1966, he was one of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s leading organizers. He assisted greatly in the legendary “March on Washington” in August 1963.

He was one of the leaders of the Selma to Montgomery march in March 1965 that sought passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. One of the enduring images and moments of the Civil Rights Movement was that of Lewis and others being beaten by police clubs at the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, on a day known as “Bloody Sunday.” Interestingly, there is a drive to rename the bridge in honor of Lewis. From 1977 to 1981, under President

Jimmy Carter, he served as the head of ACTION, the federal volunteer agency. He began his elective career as an Atlanta city councilman in 1981 and in 1986 was elected to Congress, where he served until his death. In 2011, Lewis was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom by America’s first black President, Barack Obama, something that Lewis’ activism no doubt helped bring about. I can think of no better way to end this than by quoting the words of Lewis himself, “You are a light. You are the light. Never let anyone — any person or

any force — dampen, dim, or diminish your light. Study the path of others to make your way easier and more abundant. Lean toward the whispers of your own heart, discover the universal truth, and follow its dictates. Release the need to hate, to harbor division, and the enticement of revenge. Release all bitterness. Hold only love, only peace in your heart, knowing that the battle of good to overcome evil is already won. Choose confrontation wisely, but when it is your time don’t be afraid to stand up, speak up, and speak out against injustice.”

P

eople rely on the internet every day. In recent months, reliance on digital technology was pushed even further as social distancing measures had the world going online for school and work and to maintain relationships with friends and family. A 2018 report from Pew Research Center indicated that nearly 25 percent of young adults in America reported being online almost constantly. Common Sense Media says teens spend an average of nine hours a day online, compared to roughly six hours for those between the ages eight and 12 and 50 minutes for kids younger

than eight. Students must exercise caution when spending time online. Connectivity can be empowering, but it also puts students at risk from others and even their own, sometimes irresponsible behaviors. Staying safe online should remain a priority for students who must spend more time on the internet and using digital education tools. These are some tips for maintaining cyber safety. • Exercise caution when sharing information like your name, address, phone number, and other personal data online. Check with a trusted parent or

What is the Multiple Listing Service? Commonly referred to as the MLS, the Multiple Listing Service is one of the most effective and quickest ways to get the most exposure to your property.

Do I need the MLS to sell my home? You do not need the MLS to sell your home, but it is definitely recommended. Don’t you want as many people as possible seeing the details and photos of your home?

Q: A:

As a seller, why does it benefit me to list my property for sale in the MLS?

Q: A:

Will listing my home in the MLS net me more money from the sale? By having your home in the MLS, you will have more potential buyers which will potentially lead to netting more money from the sale. Typically, higher demand leads to a higher sale price. The average list-to-sell ratio in Lycoming County for the past 6 months is .97, which indicates that properties are selling very close to list price.

What kind of exposure will my home receive through the MLS?

PREMIER

In addition to exposing your property to the 300+ Realtors in our local marketing area, many REAL websites such as Realtor.com ESTATE AGENCY and Real Estate Brokerages pull information from the MLS to display on their sites. Your Premier Real Estate Agents

Q: A:

As a seller, you will benefit greatly from listing your property in the MLS. Realtors are constantly checking the MLS for listings that may fit the criteria of their buyer clients. In addition, listings, price changes, etc. can be sent immediately to buyers if their Realtor has added their clients’ wants and needs to an automatic search.

Six Tips for Sun Safety for Kids

Keeping You Comfortable for 27 Years

The Area’s Premier Heating & Cooling Specialist!

O

ver the last few months our families have spent a lot time at home and indoors, and we are ready to spend quality time outside. Before we send our kids out to play and enjoy summer, we need to be careful to protect their skin from the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that 80% of lifetime sun exposure occurs during childhood. Whether in the pool, park, or just playing in the back yard, children need protection from the sun. Here are six of our top sun safety tips for kids: Don’t purposely tan. Wanting dark, bronzed skin often starts in the teen years, and the habit often continues into adulthood. It is important to teach your young children that there are dangers to tanning your skin. UV exposure adds up over time and

increases your risk for skin cancer and life-threatening melanoma. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Most sunscreen for children has SPF 50 but read the label carefully for broad-spectrum coverage. The cream form is typically better than lotion or spray. Apply sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside and reapply every two hours, especially after sweating, swimming, or toweling off. Don’t miss ears, hands, feet, shoulders, and behind the neck. A lip balm with SPF protection can prevent lips from getting sunburned as well. It is also a good idea to test a small amount of the sunscreen on your child’s skin before covering them completely to make sure they don’t have an allergic reaction, especially if they are under six months of age. Cover skin from the sun. Hats, long sleeves, and pants made of a lightweight, protective material are best to help reduce exposure to the damaging rays of the sun.

or block at least 99% of UV rays. Polarized doesn’t mean it protects you from the UV rays, it just describes how the light looks in the lens of sunglasses. Wrap-around or oversized sunglasses may offer added protection as well. Wear a wide-brimmed hat. Throw away the cute visor or the baseball cap when trying to protect your child from the sun. The hat should be wide-brimmed and shade the face, scalp, neck and ears. Most importantly, set a good example for your kids. Follow the tips above and let your child see that you are following the same sun-safety rules you ask them to follow. Don’t leave home without the essentials for sun protection and consider keeping spares ready to go—in your car, bag, or your child’s backpack – so that you’re never without. When your child is in shorts or not wearing a shirt, such as when they’re swimming, make sure they take shade break to give their body a break and cover their arms and legs with clothing or towels. Find shade. The sun is strongest and most harmful from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. which is also prime time for summer playtime. Plan indoor activities during those hours when possible and encourage your children to head outdoors after dinner to take advantage of the late sunsets. Remember, clouds do not block UV rays, they just filter it slightly, so treat cloudy days just like sunny days. When outdoors, encourage your children to play in the shade of trees and bring a shade umbrella or tent along for young children. Protect their eyes. The suns rays can be harmful to the eyes. Consider a hat that offers shade to the face and eyes as well as sunglasses. It can be tricky to find the proper sunglasses for children that aren’t just for decorative effect so look for UV labeling. The UV absorption should be 400 nanometers or higher

Every parent has experienced a win-lose on a road trip. You take an exit off the highway, and there are two kid-friendly restaurants — Burger King is a mile to the left, and McDonald’s is a mile to the right. Half the kids want BK, and the other half want McD’s. Before turning, the parent must make a decision knowing full well it will result in a number of disappointed campers. Leadership is always challenging, but never more so than in the lose-lose. The phrase “pick your poison” means that all options available to a leader are lousy. To fully understand the challenges encountered by leaders in the lose-lose, let’s consider the win-win and the winlose. The easiest decision for any organization is the choice between a good option and a bad option. It is referred to as a no-brainer. In a no-brainer decision, everyone ends up happy — a win-win. A more difficult decision is when an organization must choose between two good options. When two good options are on the table, people express their

FAITH

tantrum. I have occasionally found myself on the losing end of a win-lose, and I confess, my selfishness has sometimes resulted in the adult version of a tantrum. No one enjoys losing, especially when someone else got exactly what they wanted. What usually gets overlooked in a winlose is the personal loss to the leader. On road trips, I have sometimes turned the car away from the restaurant I prefer. Why? As a leader, my job is to serve those who are following me. Sometimes leaders go against their own preferences to meet the needs of their constituents. Doing so

is called selflessness — a hallmark of true leadership. In a win-lose, losers rarely offer grace to the leader. They’re too busy whining and complaining. Their selfish attitudes and harsh comments cause the selfless leader to suffer a double loss. It’s no wonder people avoid serving in leadership. Who wants that job? The most difficult decision for a leader is the choice between two bad options. This is the lose-lose, and is sometimes referred to as “pick your poison”. Loselose is awful for everyone, but for leaders, it’s the worst. Followers have an out

because they can blame the leader for their suffering, but leaders have nowhere to turn. Ultimately, a decision must be made — and the leader must make it. President Truman had a sign on his desk that stated, “The buck stops here.” It was a reminder that even in the loselose, a leader must decide. Remember, it was President Truman who made the final decision to drop the atomic bomb. He knew better than anyone the severe loneliness and personal second-guessing and self-loathing a leader suffers when making a lose-lose decision. But it is in such moments that true leadership is needed. Consider leaders like Queen Esther (See Esther chapters

3, 4, and 5), Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, and Martin Luther King Jr. Each were faced with enormous loselose decisions. Thankfully, their causes prevailed, and we remember their leadership to this day. But may we never forget that a leader must make a decision before the outcome is known. It’s easy to criticize a leader’s decision when the game is over. That’s what Monday morning quarterbacks do. Leaders don’t have that luxury. They must make a decision in the heat of the battle. If they prevail, they are hailed as heroes. If they fail, they are cursed as villains. Again, a double loss. Seriously, why would anyone ever choose to serve in leadership

eas or beans? Carrots or corn? You’ve been outside all day and it was fun but now there’s dirt beneath your fingernails, maybe enough to grow a garden! You can’t have lunch with dirty hands, of course. Imagine the mess if you went to bed like that, ugh. You know you absolutely have to get cleaned up sometime, but in the new book “I Don’t Want to Wash My Hands!” by Tony Ross, who wants to do it now? No matter what day it was or what time, Little Princess loved nothing more than to get really, really dirty. Being outside was one of her favorite things ever, especially if there was dirt and mud to play in. But one day, after she came inside and as she reached for a yummy slice of

A little while later, when Cook told Little Princess to wash her hands again because she’d been playing with her puppy, Little Princess did as she was told. She even dried “properly.” But when the King told Little Princess to wash her hands after the potty, Little Princess wasn’t happy at all. Not one bit. She’d washed her hands, not once but twice already that day. It was just ridiculous. It got worse when Maid told Little Princess to wash her hands after sneezing. Four times? She had to wash her hands four times? Yes, said Maid, because of “germs and nasties” that are everywhere: in the mud, on puppies, in the potty, in sneezes, on the table, and they’ll make you sick. They’re “Worse than crocodiles,” but smaller, so you can’t see them and the only way to keep germs and

The Roving Sportsman… Indian Pipes and Stinging Nettle By Jon Pries

A

hike through forests and fields this time of year can produce some interesting results. Not only does one have the opportunity to observe the antics and activities of young birds and mammals, but many other interesting sights and sounds abound. A frequent sight during the early light of a new day is the presence of a doe and her fawn, and sometimes a pair of fawns. Often, a fawn can be seen racing back and forth, doing “sprints” and stops and turns as it builds its stamina and agility for the time it may be pursued by a predator. Throughout the day, you just never know what you will come across if you are quiet and watchful as you hike along a mountain stream or old logging road. It is not just the birds and animals that can provide interesting sights, but the plant life as well. I challenge you to become more proficient in the proper identification of the hardwood and softwood trees that

grow in the areas that you travel as you scout and hunt in Northcentral Pennsylvania. By learning more about which trees provide food for wildlife, you will increase your chances of success when hunting for tasty wild game for the dinner table. Take along a tree identification book if need be to help with the challenge and perhaps mentor a youth as you do so. Shortly after a warm summer rain, mushrooms of all kinds can be spotted on trees or growing from the forest floor. There are many good books that will aid in identifying the various ones that grow in our area. Some are edible and quite tasty, but many are not, with some being downright deadly if eaten. A book or two to aid in identification is really important if you hope to pick some for the dinner table. One of the most identifiable plants that you might encounter this time of year as you travel in the woods are the Indian Pipes. The Indian pipe, Monotropa uniflora, is a perennial native plant that grows in clumps

some medicinal uses. For centuries, common nettle has been a staple for ancient cultures and continues to be an important food source throughout the world. It is arguably one of the most nutritional wild edible plants available, but it needs to be cooked or dried to neutralize its sting. Prepare nettle leaves as you would spinach leaves — sautéed, stir fried, lightly steamed or used in soups. Stinging nettle tea is perhaps the easiest way to yield the benefits of nettle. Cover a handful of leaves with boiling water, let steep for 10 minutes or so, strain and drink. For a stronger brew, loosely fill a canning jar with nettle leaves, cover with boiling water, place a lid on the jar and allow the tea to steep overnight. Fresh mint will enhance the otherwise earthy flavor. Stinging nettle has medicinal uses as an anti-inflammatory and to alleviate allergy symptoms. It is said that “Knowledge is Power!” The more you can learn and understand about the natural world around us, the better off you will be. There is much to learn about the benefits of our native plant world, and the above are just two such examples.

of 3 or 4 to half of a dozen or more rising up from 4 to 10 inches above the decaying leaves on the forest floor. Frequently found in mature, moist and shaded oak forests, it lacks in chlorophyll, producing a cloudy or translucent appearance, giving rise to its nickname of “ghost plant” and is actually classified as a wildflower. The plant is said to have some medicinal properties, used in treatment of bunions and warts, for aches and pains associated with colds and as a sedative. Another plant that is found this time of year, primarily in damp, fertile soil in a field setting is the Stinging Nettle, or Urtica dioica. The nettle has sharp hairs on its leaves, and if brushed against the skin can cause a slight rash and will produce a stinging sensation to the area it touches. Also known as common nettle, it grows 2 to 5 feet tall and has leaves that are coarsely toothed, pointed on the ends, and can be several inches long. It imparts the painful sting through tiny hairs on the underside of its leaves and on its stems. This is a plant that is good to identify so that you can avoid casual contact. It does, however, have

Pennsylvania’s original elk territory and seeing one was not all that likely since the herd probably numbered less than 60 animals at that time. We would see one now and then but the thought of actually hunting Ken them in our state never Hunter entered our minds. Today’s Pennsylvania’s elk herd numbers around 1,400 elk and we now have three different seasons in which to bag an elk. The general one-week season runs from Nov. 2 through 7; 26 bull and 78 antlerless tags have been allocated for that season. Sept. 12 through 26 is the archery season open only in certain Elk Hunt Zones and 10 bull and 16 antlerless tags have been allocated for that season. Finally, 34 antlerless tags have been set aside for the late antlerless-only season from Jan. 2 through 9.

t’s true. Pennsylvania’s elk herd attracts plenty of attention however not just from those who travel to central Pennsylvania to see and photograph them but hunters from all over are also in pursuit of a Pennsylvania elk. While around 400,000 visitors travel to the Winslow Hill area each year to see the elk there were also 41,240 hunters purchasing elklicense applications in 2019. Those purchasing elk-license applications were from all 50 states including Alaska and last year one successful applicant was from Colorado and one from Florida. That being said however about 90 percent of those applicants being selected in the drawing were from Pennsylvania. I remember as a young man growing up in the 60s near

percent success rate-still pretty good. In 2009 when I got my bull tag, I chose not to use a guide service. Entering into that decision however was the fact that I had killed a nice 6X6 bull in Montana years before while hunting alone from my tent sight high up in the mountains. Another factor that made me go without a guide was the fact that I knew I could spend a fair amount of time scouting the area the several weeks prior to the actual hunt. The bottom line is if you are fortunate enough to get that tag and if you can’t do your own scouting and if you don’t have some elk hunting experience you might be wise to hire a guide. Trust me, if you are picked, you’ll get plenty of inquiries from guide services. In the meantime, even if you can’t go hunt them with a gun or bow you can still enjoy some great viewing and photography opportunities this fall especially when the bulls are still engaged in combat.

The drawing for tags is in midAugust and the cost is $11.90 per application for each of the three seasons. Each year you apply however is a bonus since your name stays in the drawing for each application so you can accumulate bonus points. Don’t count yourself out because the odds seem to be against you. The much smaller percentage of hunters without guides had an 82

Baseball fans will get a chance to hear what baseball is all about.” Creativity should be flourishing during this two-month season. The Boston Red Sox won’t have fans attending their home games, so they are getting into the spirit of things in their efforts to bring friendly faces into Fenway Park. For a $500 donation to the Red Sox Charitable Foundation, fans can have their likeness placed on plastic cutouts that will be placed in the Green Monster seats above left field. Fans can submit photos and have their faces put on 20x30inch cutouts. The fans will receive their cutouts at the end of the season and will win prizes if their cutout is hit by a Red Sox home run ball. Program participants will automatically receive a personalized scoreboard message on the right-field video board. Those whose cutouts are hit by a Red Sox home run will also receive the autographed ball, two Green Monster tickets for the 2021 season, a custom Red Sox home jersey with their name and a video replay of the home run that hit their cutout. Whether it be no fans in the stands or plastic cutouts, it won’t be the same, but at least baseball is back to provide us with some live sports entertainment. Let’s see how creative those baseball announcers can be. Through it all, let’s have some fun and enjoy it.

For the self-proclaimed “world leader in sports media entertainment,” they will definitely need to step up their game from what they gave viewers in Chicago. To be fair, this is a whole new ball game that harkens back to the days when all professional baseball games were recreated beginning August 5, 1921, when KDKA radio first aired a Pirates/ Phillies game. Broadcast by announcer Harold Arlin, who sat in a studio and recreated the accounts of the game fed to him from a telegraph line. Now, 99 years later, the modern broadcasters will be doing much the same, except they will be using television feeds for their information source. In accordance with MLB safety protocols produced to protect baseball personnel during the COVID-19 pandemic, broadcasters will be relying on video feeds and canned crowd noise to re-create away games while working from broadcast facilities in their home ballparks. Baseball historian Curt Smith feels broadcasters should look forward to this strange circumstance. “This is a great opportunity for baseball broadcasters to really tell stories, to let their descriptive powers blossom.

another high caliber player but an even better person. This youngster will turn some heads. Hanief can handle the ball and plays with such passion. Neef and I got together this week and had a great conversation. We talked about all of the uncertainties with this great Nation. Our topics included race and, of course, COVID. It was very refreshing and educational to get this 16-year-old kid’s perspective. Several folks at Perkins said hello to us that morning. We enjoyed our pancakes and used my coffee creamers to diagram plays. Several asked why I decided to get back into the game. I will admit that the entire culture has changed. High

school sports definitely have their flaws. Coaching is a tough gig, and you are sometimes walking on eggshells. Keeping everyone one the same page is quite a chore. Balancing between the administration expectations and parents is a major challenge. This is a totally new experience, and it will test my abilities as a coach. But as long as I have great kids who are willing to work hard, I am quite alright with all of the other drama. We will be just fine, and we will win our fair share. I am looking forward to this incredible opportunity to work with these boys. WEAR YOUR MASK so WE CAN MAYBE HAVE A SEASON. Cheers.

I told you the story of how he was ineligible for all of last year this past winter. That decision came directly from the PIAA. Don’t get me started. I learned a lot from this kid. He handled it with class and still came to every workout and game. Hanief was our leader without ever playing a single minute. He is well beyond his years and has experienced so many hardships. Again, I cannot stress how much love I have for him. Hanief will be a junior, and you can expect big things. He is
