Double Fund the Police, Double Down on Education
I
f we really want to improve inner-city life for all that live there, two basic things must happen. It is only common sense when you think it through. What is going on nationally in our largest cities proves this. We cannot cater and kneel to criminals and lawlessness at the expense of the law-abiding. I have witnessed way too much recently; it is absolutely despicable what the leadership of these cities and states are allowing to go on. This is not about peaceful protest or change; this is about the destruction of businesses, property, and lives. Allowing anarchy in the name of racism to hold city blocks and our Nation hostage is beyond reasonable comprehension. From New York to Seattle, our major cities are proof that Democratic beyond liberal leadership fails. The 25 most dangerous cities in our Nation are led by beyond liberal ideas and have been for decades. The common factors in all have been crime, homelessness, unemployment, and children’s inability to get a good education. This is not about the vandals we see tearing down statues. This is about those that live in our Nation’s cities. And after the rioting, looting, and violence, they must still call these neighborhoods home. So, what are the two simple things that must happen in American cities to change
things for the better? First, we must double fund the police. Without safe neighborhoods, nobody can pursue life, liberty, or any happiness. The law-abiding are scared for their lives. Gangs, thuggery, and intimidation rule the city blocks. The police are simply outnumbered, and the innocent have lost their constitutional rights and are afraid to speak up. There is a definite need for more officers on constant patrol that represent the neighborhoods they’re patrolling. Those providing law enforcement within these communities must have better pay and incentives to encourage them to stay within these neighborhoods. There needs to be more community policing and involvement with the people to build trust. And it goes without saying better training, support, and mental health care options are needed for all police officers. The police need the unwavering support of the elected, whether it’s the mayor, city council, or the governor of the state. Americans’ safety has to become job one on the home front. This begins with local law enforcement. Then followed up by putting the bad guys in jail and keeping them there. We must provide safe neighborhoods for the law-abiding American citizen, whether it’s Urban or Rural America. The idea this can be done by defunding the police is complete lunacy. We must have a law

enforcement presence to provide safe school zones. This leads us to the second and equally as important change that must occur. There must be an opportunity for quality education in inner-city public schools. The education within our major cities is terrible. We need to proJim vide a realistic education Webb, Jr. to allow these children the opportunity to be successful in life. This is not happening. The educational system needs completely rebuilt. The beyond liberal way to just throw more money at education, as in the case of the state of California, doesn’t work. However, state and federal government needs to significantly increase funding to target reading, writing, arithmetic, and yes, American history, along with life skills, technology, and vocational skills. Again, this all begins with safe neighborhoods, safe schools, and then a commonsense curriculum. Education needs to cover what inner-city kids are facing and encounter every day. Classes are needed to encourage students to enter law enforcement, the military, and yes, education — to inspire them to make a difference within their own neighborhood, community, and country. This beyond liberal to fascist diatribe that is currently engulfing our Nation solves nothing. It will only continue to divide and reveal the problems created by decades of corruption with our major cities. The saddest part may be those elected to fix
the problems are the problem. Last Chance, Ladies There are still a few spots open for the ladies out there to learn the safe handling and use of a pistol. Adam Kordes, owner of National Range and Armory, and I have been empowering women all summer long with their 2nd Amendment rights. If you have an interest, please get registered immediately. This will be the last round of classes we do this year. By the time we’re done, over 200 ladies will have participated in the training. Thank you to my friends at National Range and Armory for taking care of the business end of the offer. I have heard nothing but great things about their efforts. A tip of my Webb Weekly cap with the American Flag on the side to Bill Briggman, rangemaster, and the team effort at National. Eric Densberger is the lead instructor. He is assisted by Ashley Brouse and Kait Thursby. The complete staff assists in the live fire portion of range training. Great job, gang! If you are on the fence about this offer, grab a friend and give it a try. It will be well worth your time. Just to warn and challenge all the men out there, the ladies make the best shooters. It doesn’t take them long, with the proper training, to fill the bull’s eye. For more information or to get registered, call National Range and Armory at 570601-4101 or go to their Facebook page. Let’s all be careful out there, love one another, and be grateful for all we are so very blessed within our Nation. God Bless America.

Family Fun Month
O
bviously, this hasn’t been a typical summer, but August is Family Fun Month and I think that we all deserve to celebrate! So, with everything going on in the world, what are some fun ways to celebrate the winding down of summer with family? I’ve got some ideas for you! Spend a Day in Nature Pack a picnic and a Frisbee and head to your local park for a day of fun in the sun. As your day winds down, have every family member pick up five pieces of trash to help keep the area clean and beautiful for the next pack of picnickers to enjoy. Plant a Late-Season Garden Inspire your kids’ budding green thumbs by planting a late-summer vegetable garden. Carrots, broccoli and cauliflower all do well when planted this month. Being able to watch the fruits of their labor flourish will inspire family members to eat more veggies and start conversations about food literacy. Collect Items for a Shelter Inspire your kids to start the new school year off with a clean slate by donating their gently used clothes and toys to a local shelter. Drop off the donations as a family to teach kids how their treasured wares can bring happiness to other children

when shared. Be sure to check with each individual shelter to see what items they’re most in need of. Set Up a Lemonade Stand Steph The tried-and-true Nordstrom summer staple is a great way to meet your neighbors and spend some time in the sunshine before winter’s chill creeps in. Pick a cause that’s important to your family and donate the proceeds of your sweet sales to charity! Remember to let your customers know where their money is going with a homemade sign! Plan a Camping Trip There’s no better way to get kids and adults to disconnect from technology and social media for family bonding than by taking them to the great outdoors for a good ole’ fashioned camping trip. Often times families can get so busy in their individual lives that the isolation of outdoor activities like camping can really bring a group together to bond in new ways. If you’re not able too venture to far from home, consider a simple backyard camp out. Weekly Movie or Game Nights Having a weekly activity planned for
the month assures that everyone is able to regularly gather to enjoy each other’s company. Whether you choose to play a board game or watch a family friendly movie, scheduled activities like these can develop into family traditions that your kids come to cherish as they get older. Other Easy Activities Order pizza and watch a movie in the backyard • Go out for ice cream • Enjoy a backyard campfire • Build a backyard fort • Family bike ride • Day trip to the zoo • Fishing • Hiking • Make a talent show • Cook meals together • Have a karaoke night No matter what you do to celebrate, take a moment to appreciate your family and the time you are able to spend with them! Kids grow up really fast and they may not always want to spend Family Fun Month with you, so enjoy it while you can! [Side Note] Speaking on Family Fun… The Kettle Creek Music Festival is this weekend and Webb Weekly’s own, Ken Hunter has an AMAZING NEW PAINTING up for auction! You can check out the details on page 38, but if you have and interest in owning a Ken Hunter original this is a great opportunity! Plus all the proceeds will benefit veterans!

or 30 years, the Williamsport Police Department/Lycoming County Special Response Team (SRT) has been aiding area law enforcement agencies, including themselves, in various unusual, challenging, dangerous, and serious incidents. They have been a vital part of area law enforcement’s flexibility to deal with these types of incidents and situations. According to Williamsport Police Officer Jeremy Brown, Team Leader of the Special Response Team, the team was organized in 1990 with a complement of seven officers. It has evolved into a unit that consists of personnel from throughout Lycoming County. Team members include representatives from the Lycoming County District Attorney’s Office, the Lycoming County Sheriff ’s Office, Tiadaghton Valley Regional Police Department., South Williamsport Police Department, Williamsport Bureau of Police, medical professionals from UPMC, and the Williamsport Fire Department. The team now consists of 12 operators and two snipers, and support from the Lycoming County Negotiations Team. SRT is part of the North Central Taskforce and is the response team for a terrorist incident within nine counties in Pennsylvania. SRT has responded and successfully re-
solved dozens of high-risk incidents within Lycoming County, including barricaded gunmen, high-risk warrant executions, dignitary protection — which includes Presidents George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and most recently, Donald Trump. They have also been involved in hostage rescue, special events, and asset protection. SRT has been called to assist other agencies not only in Lycoming County, but Clinton County, Columbia County, and Montour County. SRT regularly trains and works with Columbia/Montour SWAT and will assist each other in long, complex operations. “The core goal of any Specialized Response Team is to value and save human lives. That’s why we dedicate so much energy and effort into training for various high-risk incidents and heavily rely on our specialized equipment to save our lives,” Brown told Webb Weekly. “Having the training associated with SRT greatly assists in the demanding incidents in the field where life or death decisions have to made in split seconds. On a patrol level, SRT members have the skills to handle quickly developing incidents and solve those incidents successfully. Being on the team has allowed me to greatly improve several skills in law enforcement that have saved many lives, including my own life, and the team

rigorous application process that includes a physical fitness test, firearms standards, a team interview followed by the leadership interview. Once the candidate passes all phases, they are ranked and appointed as needed. The new member is then placed on a one-year probationary status and is appointed to the Quartermaster Program. The Quartermaster Program allows the candidate to gain experience and train with the team but limits the responsibility and involvement in actual operations. The candidate goes through several required certifications: less-lethal, firearms qualifications with a minimum score of 90 percent, basic SWAT school, chemical munitions deployment, flash bang deployment, chemical agent exposure, and special operation tactics. Once the probationary member completes the certifications and becomes proficient in operations, they are made full-fledged SRT Operators and given their SRT Unit Patches and Operator Pin. The team member is then sent to specialized training in whatever discipline is decided based on the team’s needs. SRT members consist of snipers, specialized breachers, entry operators, shield operators, and less-lethal/chemical munition operators. Over the years, SRT has saved many lives and maintains strict standards based on law, policy, ethics, and their mission statement. The team’s main funding for protective equipment and gear comes from the North Central Taskforce as well as donations from generous businesses and supporters.

members I serve with. Every team member relies on one another to keep each other alive while selflessly serving the public and keeping our County safe.” Brown described how SRT’s work can end in success. “In 2012, we had a veteran with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder who barricaded himself in a structure and was suicidal. The individual quickly approached the team with two large kitchen knives in both hands. As the individual advanced on the team with the knives overhead, he was shot with a less-lethal direct impact sponge round, causing him to quickly fall to the ground where he was immobilized and safely taken into custody. Several years later the individual approached one of the team members and said he was in a bad place at the time of the incident and wanted to thank SRT for saving his life.” These types of successes are the result of a rigorous regimen of training by SRT members. According to Brown, at a minimum, SRT trains eight hours every other week, plus one full week a year, which consists of approximately 250 hours of training per year. SRT maintains specialized equipment to include less-lethal weapons, chemical munitions, ballistic armor, helmets, and shields, as well as breaching tools for gaining entry into barricaded structures. He said SRT responds to approximately 1-2 callouts a month and has a response time of less than an hour. SRT members can be called for an incident 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Members of SRT are chosen through a

n the past couple of months, there have been serious public disturbances resulting in riots and numerous acts of public violence throughout the United States. Williamsport had very peaceful demonstrations, but there was trouble brewing. On July 18th, Williamsport could easily have become yet another community to add to this disintegration of law and order in the country. A small group of members of the National Socialist Movement (Nazi for short) had been planning a rally at Brandon Park since the beginning of 2020, but their permit requests were not approved due to COVID concerns. Based in a small town in Potter County, the group was determined to have a summer rally in Williamsport. Denied permission to meet, they publicly announced that the venue for their rally would be moved to their headquarters in Potter County. But on a hot Saturday, July 18th, a little after 1:00 p.m., three vehicles pulled up to Brandon Park in Williamsport and out jumped about fifteen heavily tattooed, heavily armed people. With bullhorn blaring and swastika flag flying, they began walking around the park, proudly proclaiming their racist chants. They stopped at the Bandshell for a photo op while continually looking to goad the onlookers. This had all the makings of a crisis were it
not for the thin blue line that was standing by. Williamsport Police Chief Damon Hagan had not bought the group’s public statements about moving their venue back to Potter County. He had his officers on the ready and more in reserve. When I asked him why he was so prepared, he said simply, “I don’t trust Nazis.” It was an incredible team effort of federal, state, and local authorities coordinating their efforts this day. Since the group had originally expressed their intentions back in January, months of preparation had taken place. Williamsport had mobilized not just the police force, but the fire company and parks department also played a part. Besides the local law enforcement officers there at the park, the county deputy sheriffs were also on hand as well as a large unit of mounted Pennsylvania State troopers on standby at Penn College. All these agencies

COUNTY HALL were being coordinated at a Command Center at the Third Street Plaza, which moderated the contingency efforts of federal, state, and local authorities on this day. The law enforcement officers from the Williamsport Police Department and Lycoming County Sheriff ’s office were also well prepared, long before the rally had even been planned. Each of those who participated had been trained for disturbances such as this. It was not just in knowing what they were to do individually, but also how each of them had to work as a team and in coordination with other law enforcement agencies. So, while the yelling and chanting were taking place by these men carrying semiautomatic weapons, knives, and God knows what else, the thin blue line stood silently by respecting the rabble’s constitutional freedom to speech and to bear arms. However, when a group of bystanders decided to confront the neo-Nazi members, the officers quickly moved in and kept the groups apart. That moment could have gone south very quickly had the officers been less trained or less professional, but that was not the case. The officials knew what to do and were ready to do it. They kept their cool, and maneuvered the Potter County guests back to their cars, and followed them as they exited the park and eventually left the city. The whole episode took less than an hour. It was technically an incident-free day, but not without some drama.
Commissioner Scott Metzger was at the Command Center, and beyond the amazing cooperation between all these various agencies, he praised the amount of community support for this day. UPMC had ambulances on standby. Blockades had been placed at Williamsport’s two synagogues. Local stores such as Lowes and Walmart donated food and beverage to law enforcement officials who stood for hours in 90+ degree heat. One sheriff ’s deputy was to attend a wedding but decided his presence was needed more on the thin blue line. The line is thin because there are far more who wish to do harm than those who can stand against them. Attorney General Barr noted this in his testimony before the House Judiciary Committee on July 28th. He stated, “There is no harder job in America today than being a police officer. When officers respond to an emergency, whether a catastrophe like 9/11 or an everyday crime, they do not set out to protect white people or black people, they risk and sometimes give their lives to protect and serve all people, and all people owe them thanks.” It is worth keeping this in mind, that when most of us have a bad day, we might lose time, money, or perhaps some pride or prestige. When a law enforcement officer has a bad day, they could be dead. Even when doing their job correctly, they are under the highest scrutiny. Attorney General Barr said it best, “There is no harder job in America today than being a police officer.” He is right, and he is also right that we do owe them thanks.

hile I want this article to focus on victory in the long view, to do so, we need to understand the challenges we face when focusing too much on the short view. For us, right now, the short view is a mess. Well, frankly, it’s always a mess. Danger in the Short View If you’re someone who sincerely believes in God, then it is likely you invest quite a bit of time and effort in trying to gauge whether or not you are pleasing to Him. When trying to evaluate our relationship with God or the rightness or wrongness of decisions we’ve made, we tend to focus on the short view. In other words, what were the immediate results or consequences that followed? It’s not an unusual way to measure ourselves. Most of us were nurtured in a punishment/reward system, and we tend to pattern our activity based on the immediate feedback of success or failure. There is some level of familiarity and even inspiration in the “do A, get B” punishment/ reward formula. To a large extent, the Old Testament is based on that formula. If Israel obeyed, God blessed. If they disobeyed, God punished. However, that formula doesn’t always work, especially as we live in the era of New Testament grace and freedom. Sometimes
we do the right thing, but instead of getting the reward we were looking for, we end up with defeat or suffering or a mess. Every time our short view formula breaks down, we begin questioning our relationship with God. Did I fail Him? Is He punishing me? When there is a string of breakdowns, we begin wondering if God loves Tim us at all, or worse — does He even Hartzell exist. The short view can be brutal. And here’s another struggle. We tend to focus on the times we did the right thing, but the outcome didn’t go our way. We overlook the multiplied times we didn’t do the right thing, yet we still received a blessing. It’s called grace — and it is being poured out on us constantly. Is our selfishness causing us to miss it? Jesus is our High Priest and Mediator because He is familiar with our short view struggles (Hebrews 4:15). He truly understands. Psalm 42 reflects the short view struggle, “I say to God my Rock, ‘Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy? My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, ‘Where is your God?’” The same can be said of the story of Job, and of Joseph. For both, the short view was awful. But we don’t need to look back to ancient

times to find examples of believers suffering in the short view. Imagine the anxiety and fear and confusion persecuted Christians suffer today if they focus on the short view. And friends, we have all watched dear brothers and sisters in Christ as they have suffered life-ending or life-altering crises. We all have suffered. In every short view loss, the Tempter is always eager to defeat us by convincing us God doesn’t care, doesn’t notice, or doesn’t even exist. Shadrach, Meshack, and Abednego found victory in the long view (Daniel 3). When threatened with death in the fiery furnace for refusing to worship a golden idol, they
responded, “King Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you in this matter. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majesty’s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up.” They displayed victory in the long view. Conditions on the ground are always changing, and because we live in a broken world, the conditions are generally not good and getting worse. We know this about the world. Life is an uphill battle

FAITH
against disorder, erosion, decay, and death - and the moment we stop moving against those forces; they take over. Jesus clearly warned us that we would have trouble in this world. If we build our understanding on the shifting conditions of the short view, we will be like the foolish man who built his house on the sand (Matthew 7:24-27). Remember, the rain and floods also hit the man who built his house on the rock. In the short view, the floods hit both. But the man who built his house on the rock, on the long view, withstood the crisis and experienced victory. So how do we live in the long view? First, know Who you belong to and who
you are. You are a child of God (John 1:12) and dearly loved by Him (John 3:16) and bought with a price (I Corinthians 6:20). Your name is written in heaven (Luke 10:20). You are the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5 and Revelation 19) and a new creation (I Corinthians 5:17). You are chosen, a member of the royal priesthood, and a special possession belonging to God (1 Peter 2:9). You are God’s temple, and His Spirit lives in you (I Corinthians 3:16) and is fully gifting you (I Corinthians 12) to accomplish the divine purposes God has designed specifically for you (Ephesians 2:10). You belong to the most powerful Body on the face of the earth, the Church (Matthew
16:18), of whom Jesus Christ is the Head (Colossians 1:18). You have already received more blessings than you could earn in ten lifetimes! So, stop living under the “do A, get B” formula and start living in the “got B, do A” formula! God has already given us immeasurably more than we could ever ask for or even imagine (Ephesians 3:20). In response, we will joyfully serve Him with all of heart, soul, mind, and strength (Luke 10:27) regardless of short-term outcomes! When we live in the right formula, we experience victory in the long view! Second, live in the freedom of victory. Break the bondage of the short view by living in the full freedom of the long view — eternity! Adopt Paul’s perspective found in Philippians 3:12-14, “Brothers and sisters,
I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” God has already given us the end of the story. We know the outcome! Victory is ours! Read Revelation 21 and 22 again and again and keep your eyes on the prize. Third, know that this world is not your home. Don’t evaluate anything in the dayto-day. Instead, remember that our lives are very short when viewed through the lens of eternity. Jesus commanded us to invest in eternity. In Matthew 6:19-24, Jesus said, “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy,

are foreign concepts to those who have eternal life and walk in the light of God’s Word and Spirit. Instead of trying to make sense out of the mess experienced in the short view, overcome it by looking ahead to your eternal home. Jesus clearly warned us about the short view. In John 16, He describes in detail the troubles we will face in this world. But at the end of the chapter, He declares victoriously, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” My friends, we are living in troubled days. The short view is not good. But for the believer who remains focused on the long view, nothing has changed. We are victorious. Now, let’s live like it!

and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” If your heart is in this world, then you are too heavily invested in the short view — and you are suffering because of it. When you begin investing in your eternal home, the fear found in the short view will evaporate. Fourth, know what is being prepared for you. Jesus is preparing a place for you (John 14:13). I hate mid-afternoon rolled around, the heat and welcome cooler our home smelled just like weather anytime. I can’t believe Thanksgiving. The filling was it’s August, and it hasn’t been looking glorious! I had to taste too terribly brutal. I am talking test it. It was so darn good. As we sat I have seen stores getting their fall stuff out, and it always gets around our table, I was watching me excited because, typically, I am just our deer out back feeding. REPAIRING or REPLACING YOUR ROOF?
METAL • RUBBER • FOAM • EPOM • SINGLE-PLY • PVC • SHINGLES Waylin has quite the story. A car accident caused Waylin to lose function in the lower half of his body and peeled off his bottom lip. The young cat pushed through and is now the happiest, goofiest guy! He is one year old and sweet as can be. He continues to need medication daily, which he takes very well. Can you give Waylin the home he is longing for?
Looking for a friend who is a great listener? Piper is your girl! She loves people and listens very well to commands and training. Her easy-to-please spirit is a great trait of hers. Piper also loves to run and run, and tear up plush toys. She may enjoy older children or another dog (if it is large and likes to play). Come meet this sweet girl in Kennel 84!

toward that loan for many years. And as in the new novel “One Year of Ugly” by Caroline Mackenzie, payback is no fun. Wasn’t it bad enough that Aunt Celia died? That, alone, was a shocker: her exhusband, Mauricio, found her on the floor of his house, as dead as his dream of ever getting back with her again. But then, the first weekend the Palacio family gathered without Celia, a greasy man showed up in Mauricio’s back yard with a gun, saying his name was “Ugly,” claiming that Celia had

in one sitting – a resistance that wasn’t hard because Ugly had decided that the Palacios would pay off Celia’s debt by temporarily sheltering other Venezuelans that he’d sneaked incountry. Yola’s parents home suddenly had a constantly revolving door, strangers in and strangers out, brought there by Román, Ugly’s henchman who made Yola drool. She couldn’t explain it, but yes, she’d fallen in love with her family’s captor and she trusted Román with their lives. Right in the middle of everything else, somehow, she knew that if Ugly didn’t kill someone Yola loved, the stress of his payback plan surely would.
Believe it or not, “One Year of Ugly” is a somewhat of a comedy. It’s also a ludicrous romp with a hairbrained plot that can get too outrageous. It’s also a romance. It’s also a dark look at the assumptions we incorrectly attribute to family members. Really, this novel is somewhat like the kind of stew you make when everyone in your friends’ circle is broke: everybody brings something and it’s all put in the same pot, boiled until one thing or other bubbles over, and then it’s ready to serve. It’s pretty tasty, too, come to think: author Caroline Mackenzie tells this tale enough, but not so much that the
mystery of key characters is destroyed. We know them – but we don’t, which adds to what is also a thriller-aspect of this novel. Beware that there is a high abundance of profanity in this book, and a couple of righteously silly scenes that fit. If you can get around that, “One Year of Ugly” is fun you can bank on.

And now that she was dead, Ugly said, Aunt Celia’s debt was Palacio debt. Twenty-four-year-old Yola could hardly believe it. She held her Aunt Celia in the highest regard. She wanted to be like Celia. How could her father’s sister, her beloved mentor, do such a thing? The clues were in Celia’s hand-written memories and, feeling as though the words kept her aunt alive a little longer, Yola resisted finishing the manuscript

Outfits, Not Just Clothes…
At Home Pedicure
T
here’s only one full month of summer left and, while time seems to be standing still, chances are your nails may be in need of some maintenance. Even with salons open, I’ve been doing my nails at home and have been trying to keep my pedicure as professionallooking as possible. The art of the DIY pedi is always a skill worth mastering, even in normal times. Once you get the basics down, it can be surprisingly
easy. Here are some tips and tricks I’ve learned to keep my toes looking fresh this summer. First, give yourself a good chunk of time so you can move slowly (which will give you the best results) and allow your nails to dry thoroughly. You can also use this as an opportunity to pamper your feet after months of flip-flops. Once you’ve scheduled your pedi, you’ll want to gather the right tools. The key to having professional-
looking nails (for both feet and hands) isn’t only about technique, but also equipment. While it may seem like a big investment up front, good quality tools will save you cash in the long run, especially if you’re Bernadette not likely to visit a Ulsamer salon for the foreseeable future. A basic at-home pedi kit includes a foot file, exfoliating scrub, foot cream, cuticle oil, nail clippers, nail file, polish
remover, nail buffing clock, base coat, nail polish, and a top coat. You can find all of these supplies online at Sally Beauty, Target, Ulta, or Amazon. Next, start in the shower, which acts like a makeshift steam room to help soften the layers of dead skin on your feet. Use the exfoliating scrub after washing your feet. For serious calluses, use a foot file or pumice stone in the shower. Whether or not you regularly paint your toenails, it’s a good idea to slough off dead skin from your feet once or twice a week as a general good health practice for both women and men.

Q: A:
How should I prepare my home for photos and showings? When you list your home, if you want premium price, it needs to be in premium condition! It’s very important that buyers see your home in its best light so that they can picture themselves living there. Even though they are looking at how many bedrooms and bathrooms you have, their ability to imagine living there day to day is ultimately what causes them to make an offer. So, to get your home looking “HGTV ready,” here are the top 10 things to do:

and seal off your polish with a thin coat under the tip of your nail. When it comes to color, I’m a big fan of darker polishes for the feet. Jewel tones, deep shades of purple, navy, or even black. This summer neutral colors like taupe, bronze, peach, and coral seem to be on trend. If you really want to mix it up, have an accent toe in glitter or do a rainbow effect across both feet. To maintain your masterpiece, at bedtime apply cuticle oil all over your foot in addition to your foot cream, and then put on some socks. This will act as an overnight treatment so you can wake up with smoother and softer feet. Sound like a lot? Well, I did recommend giving yourself enough time, but that may not always be realistic. You may find it more feasible to skip the shower, but at least apply some cuticle oil and then let your nails dry before you shape them. And if you find yourself rushing through painting your nails, you can spot-fix mistakes with a cap full of nail polish remover and the end of a Q-tip. Summer, like a good pedicure, will only last so long. But, for now, as we continue to stay at home and social distance, hopefully your nails will look good from afar.
35 • Webb Weekly August 5, 2020
After the shower, follow up with a foot cream, then buff your moisturizing cuticle oil into your nail to prep for applying your polish. In general, I feel it’s best to leave your cuticles to the pros, but you can push them back with an orange stick while they’re still damp. I tend to skip this step and instead just clip away any hangnails before they dry. Once nails are dry you can start shaping them with a nail file. I’ve gone back and forth on shaping my nails with files and clippers but cutting toenails too short can lead to developing an ingrown nail. So, I try to take as little off as possible, being careful not to cut them right to the edge of the skin. When using a file, follow the natural shape of your toe and smooth out any jagged edges. Once you have your shape down, you’re ready for polish! But first, apply a base coat, this will help your polish go on smoothly and help it last longer. The right base coat can also deliver strength and nourishment to your nails. Then, when you’re ready, go slow and steady as you apply your polish. Use three strokes per nail (at most) and do only two thin layers. Wait two minutes in between so each coat has a chance to dry. Finish off with a top coat

The Roving Sportsman… During These Uncertain Times By Jon Pries
A
recent nationwide poll by the National Recreation and Park Association revealed that more than half of adults polled said that they plan to vacation close to home this summer. Most cited the COVID-19 pandemic as a reason, and noting the fact that the outdoors provide the ideal chance for social distancing and to enjoy a number of recreational activities. Couple that with the fact that their primary activities of walking, hiking,
biking, swimming, picnicking, fishing and gardening are all very affordable, especially when compared with long-distance travel for vacationing. The opportunities afforded by the onslaught of the pandemic actually give a great chance to connect with millennials. Further, sixty-four percent of millennials said they planned to stay close to home for their recreating. With these factors in mind, you really don’t have to look far to realize that we fortunate folks who live here in Northcentral Pennsylvania have a huge array of opportunities right in our own back yards.

portions of five counties which includes several established elk viewing areas along the way. The bull elk will be in velvet now and the cow elk will be accompanied by their calves. The Pennsylvania Grand Canyon is always a scenic destination. Located in the Tioga State Forest and southwest of Wellsboro, PA, it stretches over 45 miles and at some points reaches a depth of nearly 1,500 feet. There are two vistas, Colton Point State Park on the western rim and Leonard Harrison State Park on the eastern rim, both of which provide excellent viewing and photo opportunities. If walking, hiking or biking is your interest, then you just might want to head out to the Pine Creek Rail Trail. This picturesque 62 mile hiking and biking trail runs from Jersey
Shore to Wellsboro, traveling through both Lycoming and Tioga Counties and following the Pine Creek Gorge. The very gradual grade of the old railroad bed makes for a very pleasant walk or bike ride. Multiple entry points along the way allow for a shorter hike or bike trip of a few hours, or for the more adventuresome, you can travel a greater distance and then enjoy a well-deserved meal at one of the restaurants in Jersey Shore or Wellsboro. Particularly during the early morning or late evening hours, whitetail deer, wild turkeys, ruffed grouse and the occasional black bear can be seen. Make sure you take your binoculars and watch overhead since bald eagles frequent the skies and treetops along this route. Especially during these times of lockdowns,
social distancing, mask wearing and other restrictions placed upon our normal activities, it is important to both your physical as well as mental health to get “out and about.” But, during these times, it means out and about in the outdoors. With local parks and state forests, families and individuals don’t have to look far to find fun, safe and affordable summertime activities close to home, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pack a picnic lunch and a few bottles of your favorite refreshment; grab your binoculars and camera (or rather, your smart phone!) and get outside in the fresh summer air. It’s all out there – just waiting for you to give you a chance to relax, meditate and realize just how lucky you are!

Fortunately, you don’t have to be a property owner to take advantage of what is available to all of us. State Forests, World class hiking trails, parks and scenic drives are all around us. Loyalsock creek, Lycoming creek and Pine creek each provide truly world class fishing and small mountain streams and nearby farm ponds are also wonderful sources of fishing. It is a scenic drive to the home range of Pennsylvania’s elk herd. Best observed at daybreak and during the hours approaching sunset, the herd consisting of around 1,000 animals is the largest wild elk herd in the northeastern United States. Start your trip at the Elk Country Visitor Center at the Sinnemahoning State Park in Austin, PA and then travel the 127 mile loop through

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…
Kettle Creek Music Festival Editor’s Note: I am somewhat filling in for Ken this week as he wants to share this information about a great event and the opportunity to help disabled veterans.
A
year ago, d e a r friend of the Kettle Creek Music Festival and Wildlife Artist Ken Hunter, began this oil painting in memory of fallen heroes. After a visit to his gallery where the Kettle Creek Festival C ommittee provided their thoughts and visions, he produced this wonderful, one of a kind oil painting - “Final Farewell.” Ken has outlined the progress of this painting on his Facebook page, Ken Hunter Art. The oil painting is presently on display at the Hill Country Gallery, 4186 Muncy Exchange Rd, Muncy, 570-437-2928. The painting will be part of the Kettle Creek Festival Fundraiser for their 20th anniversary event, August 6th, 7th &
8th. That fundraiser supports veterans’ organizations, fire companies, EMS, schools, youth programs, etc. The Kettle Creek Music Festival is a 501c3 non-profit organization that is a platform for other non-profits to raise funds for their cause. Two of the main organizations they support are military organizations, Hunts for Healing of the Luzerne Foundation, & LEEK Hunting & Mountain Preserve. The proceeds from this auction will directly benefit those two main organizations, along with the Kettle Creek Festival. The auction will be online up until and during the Music Festival. Final bids will be taken during the online/live auction August 8th, starting at approximately 6:00 p.m. The winner of the painting will be responsible for arrangements of shipping or pick up of the oil painting. Payment for the painting will need to be in the form of Cash, a Cashier’s Check or Bank Check with a non-
Campground Ln, Cross Fork, PA. There will be lots of amazing bands playing all weekend long, including the Jeff Fetterman Band on Thursday night. Friday music begins at 11:00 a.m. and will include: Banned Together, Diana & The Crew, The Heartstrings, Quarterstick, and The Left Edge Band. Saturday picks back up with Swamp Root, Country Traction, Buckskin Whiskey, FR Country Band, and Blackwater. So, take a drive and stop out to see all the great bands and vendors and, of course, to place your bid on Ken’s AMAZING painting! Ken also noted that he will have prints available of this painting after the auction and will be offering a discount on them for veterans!

Making the Right Call
T
hose of you familiar with Little League Baseball, particularly those who may be umpires or have some understanding of baseball rules, may be aware of the organization’s publication ‘Making the Right Call.’ The booklet provides case studies; presenting various baseball situations and invites the reader to make what they think may be the right call. It then provides the correct call that should have been made and explains the rationale. As the sports world struggles to get back to playing the games, it certainly would be helpful if such a publication existed
that would guide the decision makers in making the right call has to how to proceed in the current COVID-19 world. Almost without exception, those tasked with such decision-making calls are choosing to error on the side of caution in finding the delicate balance of playing the games and keeping the participants as safe as possible. In last week’s column local high school athletic directors Sean McCann, Curt Chilson and Ken Tallman provided readers with some insights to what was taking place with their respective athletic programs. Those thoughts they were kind

Currently, heat acclimation practices for high school football are scheduled to begin next Monday (August 10) with the remainder Scott of the fall sports teams to Lowery begin organized practices August 17. The PIAA has sometimes been a whipping boy for some of the past decisions they have rendered but this time around they appear to be the poster child for some
optimism giving high school athletes hope that their fall sports will not fall victim to the cancellations that plagued the spring season. Realistically, there doesn’t appear to logically be a definition that would allow football to be played given the social distancing and related health precautions daily being directed to the populous. Those of us that love the game continue to hold out hope that ‘the right call’ will be forthcoming to permit the games to be played. By taking their current course the PIAA can continue to extend hope to its membership as they really are in a no-lose situation. The ultimate decision as to whether we will have high school sports this fall rests with Governor Wolf, and the Pennsylvania

being implemented, such restrictions are a lot less stringent than those put in place by MLB or being talked about by the other professional sports hoping for a return to play. Many of these softball games are taking place at the newly renovated Elm Park complex, which organizers made a call to re-name in honor of the late, respected Father John Manno. With no negative reflection to Father Manno some have suggested that the complex’s early volunteers were worthy of mention at the Fourth Street facility. Appropriately, visitors to the complex will see that a tribute has been placed on the outside wall of the field two’s third base dugout in the form of a large softball design. That recognition honors Sam Scoppa, saluted as the complex’s founder and architect. We salute Elm Park for honoring the decades of meaningful contributions Scoppa’s labor of love provided. From this little corner of the world we’d like to send out a similar ‘atta-boy and job welldone’ to Donnie Phillips, who for many years worked alongside Scoppa doing the necessary legwork and scheduling the multitude of tournaments that made Elm Park one of the best softball facilities on the east coast. As what has proved to be a hot summer continues its march toward the fall we hope all those entrusted with ‘making the right calls’ will do so to allow the games to be played in a safe environment for all concerned.

Departments of Health and Education. They are the ones with the whistles in their mouths. Should they make the decision to close or delay the opening of the state’s schools, the PIAA’s decision shall be made for them. No school, no sports. The PIAA can truthfully tell all that they tried. With the current non-decision status of Penn State and the Big Ten Conference, high school football stands as the only hope for local fans to cheer for their favorite team. The recent call made by the Middle Atlantic Conference shut down Lycoming College’s football season. Conference calls previously had delivered the same sad news to Bucknell, Lock Haven and Susquehanna. Even in its peculiar state baseball fans were happy to see the late July return of Major League Baseball. The on-field competition was good and the broadcasters did a good job of making the game feel like it was ‘normal’ for the viewers and listeners. But even that happy sight was marred by several players testing positive for COVID-19, including nine Miami Marlins players after the team’s opening series in Philadelphia. The outbreak delayed the team’s return to Miami causing the Marlins July 27 home game against Baltimore to be cancelled. Such future outbreaks of the virus may threaten the ability of MLB to continue its plans for the 2020 season. Since our area was placed under the ‘green’ status in June local sandlot baseball and softball games have given area youngsters a chance to enjoy the games they love to play. Although safety precautions are

cholastic sports in Pennsylvania will continue as planned. But there will be no spectators or fans in the stands. NO PARENTS. The Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) voted 29-3 during Wednesday afternoon’s Board of Directors meeting to pass the Sports Medicine Advisory Committee (SMAC) minutes. Heat acclimatization for football will start on August 10th, and the first day of official practices are slated for August 17th. PIAA director
Dr. Robert Lombardi emphasized the PIAA’s motto for 2020 — Protect yourself, protect others, protect the season. DISCLAIMER. I did not personally talk to Dr. Robert Lombardi, and these quotes were stolen from another AP article. I respect Doctor Bob, but he never returns his calls. We’ve had our differences over the years, and I believe that he means well. I don’t have many nice things to say about his organization, but Lombardi and many others are in
a tough spot. The 26page RETURN TO THE PLAYING FIELD is posted on the PIAA website. Interesting read. I can’t get past the second paragraph without nodding my head. “We developed these plans with the Jamie Spencer Department of Health and the Governor’s office, and this is what we came up with,” Lombardi said. He is a brilliant man. So, it’s a full go for the PIAA, but they do have some contingencies in place
for areas that have been harder hit by the pandemic. School districts have an option to start on time, use what was called an alternate date with a September 18th start date for football or a hybrid approach with a first football game no later than October 5th. All of the decisions will come solely from the individual school districts. Not the PIAA. They will plead the fifth and make someone else take the blame. “Many of our school districts said they were getting pressured to come up with something if they couldn’t start on time,” Lombardi continued. The PIAA also came up with an alternate

been to several Little League baseball games this summer. Perhaps the biggest issue is that only 25 people are allowed together inside. Though most fall sports are outdoors, both girls’ volleyball and water polo are contested indoors. How is this even possible? “It’s pretty hard to do volleyball with less than 25 people,” Lombardi said. “We’ve been trying to see if we could get some leeway on volleyball and water polo. A lot of players rotate in-and-out on a volleyball team, and I don’t think we can ask a kid to swim for an hour straight.” I totally get it. But I am going back and forth on this issue. If this virus is a hoax, then why did all of the small colleges and universities decide to cancel all of their sports? Would each school district be responsible for testing each participant before each practice? What happens if someone gets affected? Seriously no fans? Good luck enforcing that. I am not trying to be a downer, kids, but I do have several questions about the recent PIAA announcement. Take some ownership of your decision, PIAA. Don’t pass the blame if someone calls you out. Protect yourself, protect others, protect the season. Is this our best option? Cheers.

state playoff schedule they could implement if needed, which would limit the state playoffs to just district champions, and lessen the amount of qualifiers for tennis and cross-country. The PIAA will decide what to do about the state playoffs at its next meeting on August 26th after getting a read on the first ten days of practice. “We totally understand we may have to make adjustments to everything,” Lombardi said. “We wanted a plan to be done by Thanksgiving. Some of our school districts are worried about what happens when flu season hits.” The PIAA is allowing plenty of leeway with postponing and playing of games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lombardi also said that if a school district decides not to offer fall sports that the PIAA transfer rules would still apply. A player wouldn’t be eligible at another school if they transferred for athletic reasons. That’s nice — way to go, Bob. Again, as I stated previously, there will be no spectators or fans — sorry parents. You are currently not allowed — even you, Dorin. The PIAA has protocols, but they are quick to pass the blame. Some have mentioned that the Department of Health doesn’t currently allow fans at any sporting events. Say what? I have
