No Runs, No Hits, No Errors and Nobody Left on Base

N

ormally, this is the time of year I welcome the world to Williamsport for the playing and festivities of the Little League World Series. Hopefully, next year my column is just that. Can you imagine a year ago if one of those seers of the future would have told us where our Nation would be right now? I think we all would have been shaking our heads, believing that was no way possible. The prediction would have qualified for material for at least three scifi, drama, and apocalyptic movies and a Netflix series made for the binge-watcher. I never partake in this type of so-called entertainment. After what I’m currently witnessing, I now know why. The second half of summer has always been my favorite time of year, with the exception of that whole going back to school thing when I was younger. I still wake up with nightmares dreading that. The great weather and long days of daylight make the West Branch Valley special no matter your age. It’s just a great time of year to do anything outside. Then when the calendar flips to August, it signifies two of my favorite events are on the way — the Little League All-Star season winding down with every 12-year-old baseball players’ dream of that legendary trip to the Little League World Series hanging in the balance. And the kickoff beginning the tradition of

Pennsylvania high school football is just around the corner. Now that I think of it, it wasn’t just the whole back to school thing I dreaded; it was also that ending of summer abruptly with early mornings and long afternoons of two-a-day football practices. Like most that have played high school football — I hated summer practices. When my son Hunter told me that he loved summer football camp, I knew he had a true passion for the game — and maybe a screw loose. Although today’s two weeks of hell aren’t quite what they were back in the day. If you didn’t know, Hunter now plays linebacker for the University of Connecticut. Unfortunately, their season fell victim to COVID-19. As I finished penning this article, our local Friday Night Lights has been delayed for two weeks, so we are yet to see what that outcome will be for certain. That’s a story for another day, believe me, I’ll be coming back to it. To me, the Little League World Series is the greatest youth sporting event in the world. It’s about so much more than baseball. This can be said for the overall Little League Experience young folks from around the world share in their local community. It’s a special time in a child’s life, one that most remember and cherish for a lifetime. Very few Little Leaguers make it to the LLWS. The winding gauntlet to get there requires

talent, coaching, and a lot of luck. That being said, when practice starts in February, Williamsport is on every Little Leaguers mind. That last year of playing Little League is so very special. It is talked about by so many, from those who didn’t play baseball Jim after Little League to Webb, Jr. those that made it all the way to the Majors. That final year on the small diamond allows for more home runs, no-hitters, in-field singles, and diamond gems than any other time while playing baseball. All that are playing Little League are truly playing for the love of the game. It’s about having fun, being with your friends, and going for pizza or Dairy Queen after the game. It is important to every player to get a hit and play well. However, all is forgotten about a half-hour after the game ends. The saying of the Little League Pledge, the playing of the National Anthem, and having your name announced is a special time for all Little Leaguers. If you are fortunate enough to stand in respect of another nations’ National Anthem, that means you’ve had a really, really amazing season. Here is a thought — how about ALL professional athletes set an example for the Little Leaguers and stand for the National Anthem and respect our American Flag. If you want to really insist on using American sports time to protest, do it when your

name is announced prior to the game, take that knee or do whatever you would like to do at this time. Then all rise together for the playing of the National Anthem. That is powerful and would enhance the opportunity of support for whatever the cause. A tip of my Philadelphia Phillies MLB Little League Classic cap to LLB President and CEO Steve Keener. Usually, this is the time of the year he’s busy beyond belief, and I’m bugging him about something regarding the World Series or that special game at Historic Bowman Field. Steve does an amazing job overseeing Little League Baseball in every aspect. At this point, he would want me to give credit to his great team over on the hill, along with all the volunteers that make Little League Baseball possible. I would feel much better about MLB, the NBA, or NFL if Mr. Steve Keener was the commissioner. To me, he has a much tougher job. Steve has to keep the integrity and purity of the Little League Baseball intact while balancing it with today’s bigmoney sports industry. The other guys care only about one thing. Steve does an amazing job of keeping one eye on the future and the other on preparing future generations. The leaders and athletes of the three mostwatched professional leagues in America could learn a lot from Little League Baseball beginning with the LL Pledge. “I trust in God. I love my Country and will respect its laws. I will play fair and strive to win. But win or lose, I will always do my best.” God Bless America.

Protecting Innocence – Part I By Steph Nordstrom

**WARNING** hat I am about to talk about is ugly. It’s scary, and it’s graphic. victims can then be sexually assaulted in order to produce this material, and victimized every time these images are shared over the internet.” A staggering 85 percent have become handson abusers. Whether or not CSAM is stored on a computer or shared online, it still represents a violent criminal act of sexual abuse and is just as vicious as having manufactured it in the first place. The CRC states that as many as 1 in 5 girls and 1 in 20 boys will experience some form of sexual abuse before age 18. Although, if I’m being honest, I think that the number for boys is low. I think due to the nature of the world, boys are less likely to come forward about their abuse and that skews the numbers. 90% of children who suffered sexual abuse were violated by someone known to the family. And the supply and demand of materials has only grown in the last couple of months. Children who would normally be in school, a safe space from their abusers and predators have been forced to be at home. Pedophiles, who would normally be working, are also home, looking for more and more egregious material. On the whole, the prevalence of CSAM has exploded in the last decade. Gabriel Dance, deputy investigation editor of the New York Times, was recently featured on the Sam Harris podcast. According to Dance, in 2007 there were approximately 100,000 reports of CSAM on the internet. In 2019 that number was almost 17,000,000. But there are organizations and people who are trying to help. The Child Rescue Coalition is a nonprofit organization that rescues children

from sexual abuse by building technology for law enforcement, free of charge, to track, arrest and prosecute child predators. According to their website, “Our Child Protection System (CPS) Technology provides the most comprehensive view of where child predators around the world are downloading and sharing explicit content online. “We work around the clock to collect and index 30 to 50 million reports of online users trading child sexual abuse material every day. This information allows us to expose hidden networks of abusers and report their activity. “We provide our data to local law enforcement agencies free of charge to help them protect children by tracking, arresting and prosecuting child predators worldwide — often without having to put children through the trauma of testifying in court.” More than 10,000 law enforcement officers in all 50 U.S. states and over 96 countries use the technology to target and apprehend predators who are most likely to sexually abuse children. Since inception, CRC has identified 71 million unique IP addresses worldwide sharing and downloading sexually explicit images and videos of children. Their technology has led to the arrests of more than 12,000 dangerous predators across the globe. To date, their technology has prevented the abuse of more than 600,000 children. They are doing amazing work to stop the spread and sharing of child sexual abuse and should be commended for their work. Organizations like the CRC are doing incredible work, but we also have to start at home in protecting our children. Next week, I will talk about how we as parents, guardians, aunts, uncles, friends and more can help protect the little lives around us.

Montoursville Little Leaguers Have Presidential Game of Catch By Lou Hunsinger Jr.

B

etween 2001 and 2008, 20 t-ball games involving youngsters from all over America, including several teams from military installations, and from the Challenger Division of Little League Baseball, were held on the South Lawn of the White House under the auspices of President George W. Bush and Little League Baseball International Inc. These games celebrated the spirit of our National Pastime in a historic setting. In a nod to the spirit of those games, youngsters and coaches from the Montoursville Little League were invited to have a game of catch with current White House occupant, President Donald J. Trump, and New York Hall of Fame relief pitcher, Mariano Rivera. This special event came together at a dizzying pace. According to Scott Metzger, President of Montoursville Little League and a Lycoming County Commissioner, he was in his office on Wednesday, July 21, when he received a phone call from Little League CEO and President Steve Keener. He had no

idea at first what Keener was calling him about. Keener advised him that the White House had reached out to Little League International, inquiring about having a group of Little Leaguers come down to the White House the next day. The kids would play catch on the White House’s south lawn and meet President Trump and Hall of Fame pitcher Mariano Rivera. It was the kickoff to the Major Little Baseball season with the first game in the Nation’s capital between the Yankees and Nationals. Metzger jumped at the chance and over the course of the next few hours exchanged phone calls and emails with the White House Staff making this dream become a reality. He contacted numerous coaches and was able to have the limit of 13 members and five coaches on the way to the White House the next morning. There was background information that the White House needed on the entourage that would be attending for clearances. “It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the players and coaches. We were blessed to have that opportunity, and we would like to thank Little

ear and said, “Tell Moose I said ‘hello,’” referring to Hall of Famer and former teammate, Montoursville native Mike Mussina. President Trump recalled his visit to the area last spring to give a rally. He noted how it was a beautiful area. The Little Leaguers and coaches all received special presidential masks and pins from the Secret Service. “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience to meet the President and a Hall of Famer. I am so happy for the kids,” Craig Weaver Jr., one of the coaches, said.

Bruce Jones, coach, shared, “Seeing the pure joy, excitement and nervous energy on the faces of our players from the moment we entered the White House Complex until the moment President Trump and Mariano walked out to meet the kids. As a father and coach, it doesn’t get any better than that.” Chase Jones said the best part was playing catch on the White House lawn while holding a conversation with President Trump and Mariano. “President Trump was really nice and knew a lot about baseball. Mariano showed us how to throw his cutter. How cool is that? It was the greatest day of my life.”

On the ride home, Metzger summed up how unique of a moment they experienced. “I told the kids to think about this. There are almost three million Little Leaguers in the world. You are one of 13 kids that got to play catch on the south lawn of the White House with the President and a Major League Hall of Famer. How awesome is that?” To think that our kids from our little town had this opportunity is very humbling. There are thousands of volunteers and coaches in the world that give their time and energy into this great program. We hope we did a good job representing them all. It was an honor.”

County Hall Corner: Our World After COVID By Larry Stout

I

n my lifetime, I have seen our country go through race riots, campus riots, assassinations, foreign wars, presidential impeachments, inflation, recession, epidemics, bank failures, stock market crashes, technology explosions, terrorist attacks, etc., etc., etc. And amazingly, after these crises came, they also went, and life went on. It is helpful to keep this in mind as we are slowly slogging our way through the COVID Crisis. There will be a day when this also will be in our rearview mirror. County leaders are already beginning to pull out their telescopes to try to picture what this future will look like and how it will impact Lycoming County. Having taught a course on Future Studies (yes, this is an actual field of science), I pulled out my notes to look toward a new world. Here is a humble endeavor to look down the long road toward 2030 to see how Lycoming County could fare in various critical areas. First, transportation. Roads and bridges are not options, but essentials and the work that the county and local municipalities have endeavored to improve the infrastructure is highly commendable. The bridge bundling project initiated by former Lycoming County Transportation Planner Mark Muroski, which targeted 40

structurally deficient bridges in 19 different municipalities, is a tremendous example of this. It should not be overlooked that the county also has a very good public bus system that is continually improving its service. As those who live in big cities or the suburbs get fed up spending more and more of their time in gridlock, the freedom of movement in Lycoming County will look very inviting. Information, specifically internet access, will definitely become more and more essential in the future. The initiative initially began by former US Congressman Tom Marino, and followed up by Congressman Fred Keller, to expand broadband access could have an extremely big impact on the future development of our area. Lycoming County Commissioners recently approved a

COUNTY HALL $2.5 million grant for extending broadband networking through the region. As we are all now painfully aware, health and safety can impact everything else. The expansion of a new Geisinger medical facility in Lycoming County adds to a very strong medical support system for our area. The safety aspect that also cannot be over-exaggerated is the upgrading and improving the critically important overflow embankment on the 20-mile-long levee on the Susquehanna River. Floods have made a devastating impact upon this region in the past century, and the levee was very close to becoming decertified. If it were, like the Natomas Levee near Sacramento, California, the results would be economically devastating to homeowners and businesses. There are other strengths, such as the continued interest and growth of Little League, the relative stability of the higher educational institutions of Lycoming College and Pennsylvania College of Technology, the beautiful environment of our parks and public lands, and strong community pride, to name a few. Surveys have shown that big city residents are restless with the decline they see in their urban areas and longing for the type of lifestyle that is cultivated here. All this is very promising for the future of our region. Yet, for all the positives, but there are many concerns.

How can we better care for senior citizens, especially related to property taxes? How can we attract major businesses to locate here to provide more family-sustaining jobs? How can we improve, and even develop, more recreational facilities that are critical to a better quality of life? How can we encourage more volunteerism, especially in critical areas such as local fire and rescue companies, but also institutions such as Little League, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Scouting, etc.? How can we encourage more engaged, public-minded citizens to take part in the political process — specifically running for public office, but also serving on community boards? How can we better address the crime and illegal drug activity in our region? Caution, prudence, and humility are essential in predicting the future, as there are no certainties when projecting what lies ahead, even for experts. I heard worldrenowned business guru Jim Collins relate how he conducted a high-level forum with a group of experts and leaders in 1998 with the object of imagining the world in the next fifty years. What they never imagined was that in just three years, the location of their meeting would be gone because of a terrorist attack. The forum was held at the World Trade Center in New York City. Nils Bohl, Nobel laureate in Physics, summed it up best, “Prediction is very difficult, especially if it’s about the future.”

ummer is here, which means it’s a great time to increase our activity levels and truly enjoy all that the warm weather has to offer. Whether you are heading out for a walk, hike, or other activity, it’s important to consider a gradual approach when transitioning from the winter couch potato to the warmweather “weekend warrior” to avoid injury. The largest and strongest tendon in the body, the Achilles, anchors the calf muscles to the heel bone — which subjects it to very high forces. Achilles tendon problems are very common, especially among middle-aged weekend warriors who don’t exercise regularly. The human body has a tremendous capacity to adapt to physical stress. While we tend to think of “stress” negatively, physical stress, which is simply exercise and activity, is beneficial for our bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments, making them stronger and more functional by the repetitive breakdown and buildup of tissue. When you are active and moving, such as when running, the Achilles tendon can pull with a force equal to many times the body weight. The tendon can weaken and degrade over time, especially if you

THE

have a sedentary lifestyle, causing pain and inflammation and putting you at risk of injury such as a rupture. Types of Achilles Tendon Injuries Achilles tendon injuries may seem to happen suddenly, but they usually result from tiny tears that happen over time. These chronic, or long-term injuries, to the tendon microstructure, such as Achilles tendonitis or Achilles tendinosis, often result from overuse and sudden increase in amount of or intensity of physical activity, as well as from wearing high heeled shoes and in individuals with high arched or flat feet. Symptoms of these types of injuries include lingering pain or swelling and should not be ignored as the symptoms may be an early warning that you’re at risk of a more traumatic injury, such as Achilles tendon rupture. Achilles tendon rupture happens when tendon fibers tear and separate. Therefore, the tendon can no longer function normally. Risk for rupture increases when you put off treatment for tendonitis or tendinosis and continue activity. Most often the injury occurs during activity, such as a swift change of direction or a jump, which puts additional strain on the weakened tendon causing rupture, often with an audible “pop.” This rupture is often described as feeling like being shot

leg. Surgery includes removing a bone spur that is hitting the Achilles tendon, repairing the tear, removing the damaged portion, and transferring the tendon to the heel bone to restore motion. Patients who undergo surgery can expect to be on crutches and in a cast for six to eight weeks, followed by months of therapy. It may take up to a year to reach maximum improvement. Although it takes time, the treatment of Achilles tendon problems usually works with most people returning to sports and other activities. Prevention Overuse injuries, such as Achilles tendonitis and tendinosis, can be prevented with proper training and heightened awareness while doing physical activities. Whether you’re a seasoned athlete or weekend warrior, you must learn to listen to your body. Always remember to warm up and cool down properly before and after activity. Incorporating strength training, increasing flexibility, and improving core stability will also help minimize risk of injury. Seek the advice of your primary care provider or an athletic trainer when beginning an exercise program or sport and take your time to let your body get used to the increased or new activity. Christine Nolan, DPM, is a foot and ankle specialist with UPMC Orthopaedics. She sees patients at Susquehanna Health Foot & Ankle Specialty Care, 1201 Grampian Blvd., Williamsport. or kicked in the back of the ankle and can make it hard, if not impossible, to stand or bear weight. Treatment Options Regardless of the injury, don’t push through the pain. Early treatment is key to staying active while treating Achilles tendon injuries. Consult a physician if you have pain that doesn’t improve with rest. The diagnosis can usually be made after a thorough history and physical examination. This is best done by a foot and ankle specialist with specific interest and knowledge of your activity. In some cases, x-rays are needed and occasionally additional tests like a bone scan or MRI are required as well. Minor Achilles tendon discomfort can be treated with rest, anti-inflammatory medication, stretching, and moist heat. While some pain and discomfort may be the result of age or being out of shape, you should seek care from a specialist when the discomfort lasts longer than a month, or if your discomfort starts to affect your lifestyle. Minimally invasive procedures and physical therapy can often help in treating minor Achilles tendon injuries such as tendonitis and tendinosis. These minor treatments may require you to slow down or decrease activity for a few weeks, however, they can prevent additional injury which can sideline you for months. Treatment for severe problems, such as a torn ruptured tendon, may include surgery, or a cast, splint, brace, walking boot or other devices that immobilize the lower

Gazette and Bulletin August 15, 1945 Japs Surrender! Most Exciting Demonstration Never Excelled in Williamsport

Compiled by Lou Hunsinger Jr.

T

housands stormed the business district of Williamsport last night as they joyously celebrated the surrender of the Japs. President Truman’s official announcement of peace given by radio at 6 p.m. Eastern War Time set off a demonstration never excelled in this city and probably only equaled by the jubilation which followed the signing of the Armistice in World War I on November 11, 1918. The excitement that prevailed here all yesterday, starting at 3:10 a.m. when railroad whistles touched off a premature celebration, was dwarfed to insignificance when compared to the spontaneous outburst that developed upon the issuance of the President’s proclamation. Immediately following the Presidential announcement from the White House, Mayor Leo Williamson appeared on the microphone at WRAK radio station and read to the waiting thousands his proclamation for Williamsport. As agreed in earlier plans, he called for

a community assembly in front of City Hall one hour after the proclamation. The parade was delayed however, by heavy and unmanageable traffic so that it did not begin before 8:45 p.m. For Williamsport and Lycoming County, the surrender of Japan meant the end of 44 months of warfare which started on the fateful day of Dec. 7, 1941, when the Jap planes descended on Pearl Harbor. It meant to the more than 9,000 men and women from this county who have been serving on every battle front of the global war may now anticipate ultimate release from the armed forces and return home. An estimated 2,000 persons paraded along a route lined by about 25,000 residents. Police estimated at 9:45 last night that another 10,000 had jammed their way within hearing distance of the hastily erected platform in the front of the municipal building. It was from that platform that Williamsport gave formal expression to its thanksgiving, and there too, it paused in respectful tribute to the 305 men and one woman from Lycoming County now known to have died in World War II.

ou just got done eating dinner. You’re full because you just had a full course meal, but you are craving that something sweet. There is always room for dessert. Like I say, ice cream and pudding just slide through all the cracks in your belly. I get days where I do want that something sweet after dinner. I’ve never been a huge dessert person, but the older I get the more I appreciate that delicious piece of pie with a hot cup of joe. OK, OK. So, it’s not joe. It’s hot tea. Listen, the older I get, the more I enjoy sweets, but my taste buds haven’t seemed to change

Nahh, instead I’ll dip my double stuffed Oreo in my hot tea like a badass. (I wish I could insert the laughing crying face emoji right here.) Most of you know, I love to cook, not bake. I CAN bake, but love cooking more. Give me a day in my kitchen and I want to prepare a bunch of food for my freezer or make a big dinner for my family. But every now and then I will bake so my family has something sweet to enjoy. I make sticky buns a lot, and make puddings too. I try

in the coffee department. Growing up, my Pap and Gram Liddick (Floyd and Lois) loved coffee. I loved mornings at their house because my parents never really brewed coffee in the mornings. So, smelling it was a special treat. Love the smell, not the taste. I wish I did. I’d feel so grown up, and cool drinking it. (Hahaha!) So, I guess I’ll just have to pretend, like when I was eight years old with my Little Tikes kitchen. Hey, hot tea is cool too. Don’t judge. There is nothing like a cold winter’s morn, and wrapping your hands around your favorite mug, sipping

on a hot liquid. Warms your soul. Then dip your favorite cookie in it. OH! OH!! You know another favorite!? Hot chocolate with fluffernutter on toast! Oh mannnn!! Now that right there is the best! (Andrea, come on now, you are getting off topic!) Back to desserts. Or was it Andrea coffee? McElroy Does it really matter? They both pair together. I still get to smell coffee every morning, since my husband is one of “the cool ones” that can drink it. Yea, that’s right. My man drinks coffee. I get it ready every day for

This Week’s LION: Scammer Stoppers By Larry Stout

S

heriff Mark Lusk announced at the Lycoming County Commissioners Meeting on Tuesday, August 4th, to bring attention to a recent rise in an ongoing racket that has plagued our area — phone scammers. These professional deceivers call individuals at home, at work, or on their personal cell phones, and introduce themselves, saying, “I am with the Lycoming County Sheriff ’s Office, and we have warrants for your arrest. You are required to pay $5,000 immediately or face incarceration.” The cause may be for failing to pay bail or failing to report to court, with failure to pay resulting in immediate arrest. If any protest is made, the caller will get indignant and begin to make threats. The caller directs the individual to a UPS store to send the money. At a minimum, the scammer is attempting to gain access to bank account information, PayPal type account numbers, or a personal credit card number. Sheriff Lusk emphasizes that before taking any action of any kind, especially when it involves giving money or

personal information, always call the agency that the individual purports to be representing to confirm. This would include the Office of Lycoming County Sheriff at 570-327-2280 or the Lycoming County Court Administration at 570-327-2330. Even if an individual receiving such a call knows it is a scam, it would be helpful to the authorities to call the sheriff ’s office to inform them about it so they can continue to track these offenders. Every area resident can help in safeguarding themselves and their family and friends from these scammers. Here are the guidelines to remember. First, under no circumstances should any personal information, credit card info, social security number, date of birth, bank information, etc. be given over the phone unless it is to someone that is personally known. Second, to better help track these creeps down, note the telephone number of the caller that is indicated (and never answer one that is ‘unknown’) and try to document the conversation as best as you can remember. No matter how convincing these individuals might sound on the

went into his spiel about a warrant. Lusk waited patiently to hear the imposter give his entire shtick, then calmly told the caller that he was talking to the Lycoming County Sheriff himself. The caller chuckled, and the phone quickly clicked off. Tell your friends, relatives, and neighbors about this ongoing scam. These individuals are not necessarily from our area; some are even from foreign countries (and their accents betray them as such). They would cease to exist if people would simply ignore their threats and then report the call to the authorities. Spread the word — stop the scammers!

Any residents who have already received calls similar to these described are requested to call the Office of Lycoming County Sheriff (570-327-2280) to report the calls. As you know, a rental property is far from a passive investment, and so I believe that all landlords should acquaint themselves with the options locally available. Whether you have one property or dozens of units, there are good management services who are always happy to discuss your particular situation. Landlords and property management people have a common bond, and we all love to compare notes and learn from one another.

Can your office help me find good tenants? Yes, indeed! Whether or not we manage your property, we can help. For owners who manage their own property, available units can be simply “Listed for Rent” with our office. We have the resources to market the unit, and the time and availability to show it. We have the expertise to process applications (a review of an applicant’s criminal, credit, and rental history; as well as employment and income verification). We’ll prepare a lease, meet the new tenant for review, signatures, required initial payments, and help get tenant utility accounts set up.

What exactly does property management entail? A lot. everything you’re doing for yourself, and likely a bit more. Vacancy filling, rent collection, follow up on delinquent rents, management of maintenance/repairs, management of utility accounts, enforcement of lease terms, periodic inspection of rental units, accounting for security deposits, rental income and expenses, addressing tenant concerns and disputes, working with insurance adjusters, the Housing Authority, Codes officers, etc. – not to mention handling any tenant eviction proceedings for you. Where does science come in? A 2009 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine suggested that cold water therapy might activate the body’s brown fat, which is important in metabolism and regulating body weight. The study found that a cold shower a day actually improved weight loss by up to 9 pounds per year. Not a “ton,” pun intended, but since no diet or exercise was involved, I’d take the win.

In more recent times, Dutchman, Wim Hof, also known as the Iceman, has been gaining notoriety. First inspired by religion and mysticism after the suicide of his wife, Hof searched out ways that he might help treat things such as depression. After decades of exploration, he stumbled upon what is now known as the Wim Hof Method, whereby the combination of breathing techniques and cold bathing have allowed Hof and countless others to withstand extreme cold for prolonged periods of time. Hof believes that, through his method, virtually anyone can reduce stress, improve concentration and energy, and build a stronger immune system. Such

if cold therapy is a good idea, as it may adversely affect people with certain health conditions such as heart disease and high blood pressure. There are many methods of cold training for those healthy enough to undertake such a regimen. The most basic method would be to start off your normal daily shower with hot water then gradually turn it to cold, starting with your feet and legs, then gradually cooling higher parts of your body until, over time, you are able to completely immerse yourself in cold water for extended periods of time. For more information on developing a fitness program or if you are interested in online personal training, feel free to email me at dave.bellomo@gmail.com.

Proponents of cold therapy, particularly cold showers, believe that it improves circulation, can keep hair and skin healthy, strengthens the immune system, increases energy, and may even help alleviate depression and improve fertility. While there is some scientific evidence to support certain claims, don’t throw away your water heater just yet. ictoria’s Secret is out and its bye-bye Lycoming Mall. The boudoir style lingerie retailer recently announced that it is closing 235 stores across the country, including the Pennsdale location. Women banishing bras or passing on peignoirs is not the reason for the closures. The reason? Online shopping. Bath & Body Works will also be

shuttering their Lycoming Mall store because sales have gone down the drain for the same reason. Online shopping. Who would have guessed 25 years ago that shopping online (if they knew what that term meant) would revolutionize the retail landscape, forcing tens of thousands of storefronts to go dark? Locally, over the past few years, there’s been a mass exodus of stores that left the Lycoming Mall. The closings became more apparent when Macy’s left in March 2017. From then on its been a domino

over. It’s not surprising that Amazon has dominated retail sales; the 26-year-old company is the largest online retailer and second-largest retailer in the world. In 2019 Amazon’s sales were a staggering $280.5 billion. With department stores becoming an endangered species, it is hard to imagine a time not that long-ago Sears was the largest retailer in America. Sears was a staple in small towns, suburban shopping malls, and in busy cities. The store has become more of a memory to reminisce about than a shopping destination for folks that live

near one of the few remaining stores scattered across the country. For the past several years, Sears has been on life support, and its prognosis is looking dimmer each day. It’s a far cry from the company that boldly changed the way people shopped with the debut of the Sears Roebuck mail-order catalog in 1893. (Sears is often credited for founding the first mail-order catalog; however, that honor goes to Tiffany & Co. for their 1845 Tiffany’s Blue Book.) Sears improved the mail order experience by offering more merchandise and made the ordering and return process easier. The catalog

was an instant hit with its wide range of quality and affordably priced items that individuals could order from the comfort of their own home. No longer would shoppers feel pressured by aggressive salesclerks needing to make a sale. No longer were folks that lived in rural areas forced to drive into the nearest town for their shopping or be dependent on the limited selection and higher prices at the local general store. Sears made sure the variety was extensive including china, chairs,

clothing, curtains, housewares, jewelry, feather pillows and feather beds, toys, trowels, towels, tools, furniture, waffle irons, wallets, washing boards, kitchen stoves and stovepipe hats, gadgets, and gizmos. Mixed in with the mixing bowls and mustache wax, you could find items that were a little quirky, at least by today’s standards. Shoppers would find an old age eye test, saddles, gravestones, corsets, carriages (the horse-drawn variety), motor carriages (no horse required,) vegetable pills, and arsenic wafers (as a facial cleanser) and washable business suits. With a Sears catalog in hand, one could find everything they needed to set up housekeeping, including the actual house. From 1908 to 1940, Sears catalog offered house kits that would arrive via boxcar and included everything to build a home from nails and doors to precut wood, shingles, and even the kitchen sink. Sears offered more than 300 different designs that ranged from a three-room cottage with an outhouse to an efficient bungalow to a grand two-story home with servant quarters. According to Sears, a larger kit

contained more than 30,000 parts weighing 25 tons. The store claimed a man of “average” abilities could assemble the home in 90 days. Depending on when the kit was purchased, the homes were priced from about $600 to $6,000. Between 70,000 to 75,000 homes were sold. Sears kit homes were the American dream delivered in a boxcar. Sears was not the Amazon of its day; Sears was much more. The retailer was a part of the community and part of

American life. And it all started with a hefty mail order catalog. Comparing Sears 1893 mail order catalog to today’s highly advanced online shopping and they seem worlds apart. Guess what? What’s old is new again. With the 1893 mail order catalog, someone would look at thousands of images of merchandise, submit their order and payment and wait for the order to arrive at their door. If you haven’t and try to establish a work-from- already, now is the time to stock up on home routine. So, instead of dressing plain tanks and tees. Ribbed racerback up, we’ve been dressing down, which tanks are essential here in summer. I’d doesn’t have to be sloppy or even recommend having a couple in both unstylish. There’s nothing wrong with black and white, then a few pop-of-

a Birkenstock or an athletic sandal. True, a supportive sandal may make you think of orthopedic options, but orthopedic shoes have come a long way in recent years. There are some sleek and sporty styles out there. There’s no shame in being kind to your feet: Even if they are stuck at home, treat them right! Lastly, don’t count out knitwear just because it’s still summer. A ribbed dress or “soft” matching sets are cozy, slightly luxurious options for dressing down in late summer. On milder days here in August, consider throwing on an oversized loose-weave cardigan as an alternative to a coverup if you’re lucky enough to be lounging poolside. Or, if you’re stuck working from home, pair your soft pants and basic top with a cropped summer sweater, so you’re not frozen out by air conditioning at your desk. Also, crocheted pieces are an unexpected add-on to add texture to your casual outfit. Hopefully, you already have a few of these pieces in your wardrobe, so you can start mixing and matching up some low-key looks. If not, consider stocking up, because we’re in this for the long haul, and there’s no reason why you shouldn’t dress down in style.

For fall, consider basic V-neck and crew-neck t-shirts, and, come winter, look for long-sleeved Henley style shirts in burgundy, grey, and navy. One thing about basic shirts is that they can be worn dressed down, then also paired with jeans and other pants for when you leave the house. For even more ease and comfort, you can’t go wrong with a flowy dress. I explored house dress options at the beginning of the stay-at-home order and found that causal dresses were on-trend even before the pandemic. From tiered smock dresses to slinky slipdresses, and everything in between, there are a ton of frock options. I’m a fan of anything with pockets, in a breathable fabric, that can be thrown on — no zippers necessary. For summer, a shirred bodice is a classic, yet comfy style. As we look to the fall, I’m looking at oversized sweater dresses. For your feet, you can’t go wrong with slides. I like the ease of slides as opposed to lace up house shoes during the warmer months. You can always go with flip-flops; however, I personally prefer a more supportive footbed like

The Roving Sportsman… Three Things Worth Knowing About By Jon Pries

August is National Shooting Sports Month: SSF, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, is the driving force behind many of the activities and programs that are highlighted throughout the month of August as we promote and celebrate gun ownership and the dozens of target shooting sports. More than 2.5 million people have joined the firearm-owning community so far in 2020 and many have done so through introduction to ownership and target shooting by a mentor. NSSF’s +ONE Movement is their program which encourages experienced shooters to be a mentor and help even more newcomers discover how to safely handle firearms and have fun breaking clay targets or knocking down steel target plates. The hashtag, #LetsGoShooting, is the theme of National Shooting Sports Month with which you can share your

N

experiences on your favorite social media networks and remind others to head out to the range for an enjoyable day of fun shooting and socializing (as well as social distancing, of course!). With the onslaught of the Corona virus, getting involved in the shooting sports is a great way to get outside, in the fresh air, and not be bombarded all day with the latest statistics of COVID-19. In a recent press release from the White House celebrating National Shooting Sports Month, President Donald J. Trump stated “As we encourage our fellow Americans to take part in learning more about firearms this month, including safety and proper instruction, we also pledge to continue doing our part to ensure that our rights are never infringed upon. I ask those Americans who currently participate in shooting sports to share this cherished tradition with others. Together, we can proudly ensure that the next generation knows how to safely and responsibly enjoy their Second Amendment freedoms.”

own backyard. The Great American Outdoor Act: The Great American Outdoor Act is a bill passed by the United States Congress, and signed into law by President Donald J. Trump on August 4, 2020. It has two major components: to fully fund and permanently fund the Land and Water Conservation Fund at $900 million dollars per year, and provide $9.5 billion over the next five years to address maintenance backlog at our American national parks. None of the funding will come from taxpayer dollars. Instead, programs would be funded by royalties from energy developments on federal lands and waters. The new act will create an additional 100,000 direct and indirect jobs, and also drive tourism to aid local communities surrounding national parks. This is certainly the most significant conservation legislation enacted in the past 50 years. Virtually all of our national conservation organizations have voiced their support for this monumental legislation that will be of benefit to everyone who enjoys the outdoors, regardless of the activities they pursue. It would seem that Congress actually can get good things done on occasion!

National Hunting and Fishing Day is September 26, 2020: National Hunting and Fishing Day is an event that is celebrated in all 50 states on the fourth Saturday in September. It was created in 1972 when Congress passed two bills establishing a specific day to celebrate the conservation contributions of the nation’s hunters and anglers. Most state fish and game departments plan public events to help celebrate this day, but it now appears that the COVID-19 outbreak is about to put a damper on all of that. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries just announced the cancellation of their planned events across the state because of the virus. I would suggest that if an event that you might plan to attend ends up being cancelled, that it would be a great opportunity to take the bull by the horns and celebrate the day on your own, or preferable with a few close friends or family members. Spend the day along a stream or pond, or take time to go to your nearby shooting range. Take along a friend, relative or neighbor and be thankful for the outstanding hunting and fishing opportunities we have right in our

Outdoors with Ken Hunter…

the past few days alone, my wife and I have spotted a good number of turkeys with some close to or even crossing the road. The day before I sat down to write this piece, we had to stop the vehicle to allow four hens and eight youngsters to walk across in front of us. The same thing happened with the same bunch 20 minutes later when we came back up the hill, and they were on their way back to a roosting site, I suspect. The following day, a few miles down the road I spotted four more good sized hens only 30 yards from the road; these kinds of sightings have been off and on all spring and summer.

While you are in the business of looking out for turkeys, you may also be interested in knowing that the Pennsylvania Game Commission is looking to Pennsylvanians to help measure annual turkey reproduction through its Wild Turkey Sighting Survey. The survey runs from July 1 to Aug. 31. The reports you turn in will help the agency better understand the influence of weather and other factors that might limit turkeys. If you want to help out, you can report your summer sightings by going to the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s mobile app or go to the agency’s website, www.pgc.pa.gov. The public

MURRAY

COLLISION

is encouraged to report the number of turkeys spotted along with the general location, date, and contact information in case biologists have any questions. This data will help determine total productivity and allow the commission to compare long term reproductive success. I’m sure I don’t have to mention to folks in these parts how important it is to keep an eye out for deer when traveling, but the same may be true for turkeys. By the way, you may want to add bears to that list; my granddaughter and her husband had a 200-pounder run across the road hardly a mile from the intersection at the Muncy Dunkin.

Several years ago, I spotted a good flock of birds just off a backwoods dirt road, and I saw those birds in the same general area several more times. I got permission from the landowner and took a nice bird on the opening day of the fall season. There’s no question that as the fall season moves closer, I get more serious about scouting and combine my turkey scouting with my fall archery hunting endeavors. However, it still pays to keep a good eye out while driving down the road, and if my wife is driving, I can better scan those nooks and crannies that can easily be overlooked, but sometimes you don’t have to look all that hard. are pillars for successful programs, social distancing is tough. “As an eternal optimist, I believe we will have a full season; however, I do not believe we will have a traditional state playoff system this season.” As the eastern end of the county, Hughesville’s Adam Gehr and his players are anxious to get things underway. “We have 37 players, and the kids have accepted the challenges of the offseason and the upcoming season changes. The kids just want to play. They have been patient with all the health screenings and social distancing as much as possible at this point. Practice preparation has been a challenge. It really comes down to the kids, coaches, and parents willing to make sacrifices to make it work. So far, so good, with all involved. “We look to have a number of returning starters back on both sides of the ball. Our biggest concern is finding a quarterback, and that battle is wide open. We are looking to our seniors to lead the way. I personally worry about things we can control. I told the kids all of this is out of our control as to whether we will play a full season or not. We will prepare as we always do and adjust accordingly.” That’s about all Keefer, Gravish, Crews, Gehr, and the rest of the high school coaches can do, prepare, and wait for those Friday Night lights to shine brightly. Those are the moments they and their players can control. Let’s hope they have that chance.

We can only worry about things we can control, and whether we play football or not is not something Montoursville football coaches, players, or community members can control.” At Jersey Shore, the Bulldogs are coming off an 11-4 record as defending District AAAA champions and a final four PIAA appearance. Their kennel is not bare — with 26 lettermen, including seven starters on both sides of the ball returning for coach Tom Gravish. “We expect about 55 players to report for our heat acclimation drills,” Gravish said. “We are excited to get started and have accomplished a lot through our summer strength, speed, and conditioning program. We are trying to be as safe as possible under our school district’s guidelines. We are trying to have as much fun as possible and play it one day at a time.” Expressing “the strength of the wolf is the pack” mentality Williamsport’s Chuck Crews was expecting roughly 75 players to report this week. “We expect to be better than last year. We just need COVID to chill out and allow us to find out. The biggest challenge is the uncertainty surrounding everything. Football coaches are notoriously creatures of habit. Our strength is rooted in consistency. With no clear cut COVID policies and procedures, it is difficult to plan accurately for practices. Also, because camaraderie and team bonding

Applications to Open for Wild Pheasant Youth Hunt

Game Commission and Pheasants Forever invite junior hunters to pursue wild birds in Pennsylvania.

or the fourth year in a row, some lucky junior hunters will have the opportunity to experience the thrill of seeing a cackling pheasant rooster pounding skyward while having a special opportunity to harvest the wild game bird this Fall. The Pennsylvania Game Commission today announced the application process for the fourth annual Central Susquehanna Wild Pheasant Recovery Area (WPRA) youth hunt. This hunt marks another year of pursuing wild pheasants within the WPRA following this important restoration initiative. Last year’s hunt saw close to 200 birds flush ahead of the young hunters over the two mornings and this year should be another fantastic season. The pheasant hunting tradition in

Pennsylvania started in the early 20th century with the introduction of ringnecks from Asia into the state for hunting purposes. Their rapid expansion throughout agricultural areas resulted in hunters embracing the new hunting opportunity. Wild pheasant populations took hold and continued to grow through the 1960s and peaked in the early 1970s. However, changing agricultural practices, land development, and reforestation led to the decline of wild pheasants throughout the state and, by the end of the 20th century, it was unknown if viable wild populations still existed. The Game Commission continued to raise and release game-farm pheasants, but hunters still longed for the glory days of hunting wild birds, and the agency was tasked

A limited number of permits will be issued to licensed junior hunters between the ages of 12 and 16. The application period begins on Saturday, Aug. 8. Applications are due by Sunday, Sept. 20, 2020. Successful applicants will be notified following the random drawing held on Sept. 22 and further coordination concerning the hunt will take place. Youth hunters will be assigned one hunt date occurring on the morning of Nov. 7 or Nov. 14. Each hunter will be assigned a “hunt mentor” to ensure safety and guide the permittee. The Game Commission encourages each permittee to be accompanied by an adult parent or guardian so that the experience can be shared. Following the hunt, permittees and their guests are invited to attend a free luncheon provided by Pheasants Forever. Youth hunters may apply through the Commissions online application process found at: https://pgcdatacollection.pa.gov/ PheasantYouthHuntApplication.

with investigating whether a wild breeding population could be restored. The WPRA program was a key objective within the 20082017 Ring-necked Pheasant Management Plan for Pennsylvania and looked to identify four habitat areas of at least 10,000 acres where wild pheasants from western states could be stocked. The primary goal of the program was to restore self-sustaining and huntable ringnecked pheasant populations in suitable habitat. This effort was initiated by the formation of a partnership between the Game Commission, Pheasants Forever and dedicated landowners within proposed management and release sites. Of the three remaining Pennsylvania WPRAs, the Central Susquehanna WPRA, located in Northumberland, Montour and Columbia counties, experienced the most significant wild pheasant population increase since the initial release of 992 wild-trapped birds from South Dakota and Montana.
